Short outing Sunday
Nelson allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three over 3.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Cubs on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Nelson needed 75 pitches (40 strikes) to get his 10 outs. He was at least able to keep the runs against down after allowing at least six runs in three of his previous four outings. The right-hander is now at a 5.53 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 91:44 K:BB through 138.1 innings over 27 starts. His previous high in innings across all levels was 154.1 last year, a mark he's passed at 160 this season, so his recent struggles may come down to workload. For now, he's tentatively lined up for a road start versus the Yankees next weekend.

Hit hard in Tuesday's loss
Nelson (7-8) took the loss Tuesday, coughing up six runs on seven hits and two walks over 4.1 innings as the Diamondbacks were downed 7-4 by the Mets. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Four of the seven hits off the right-hander went for extra bases, including Ronny Mauricio's first career home run and Pete Alonso's 44th blast of the season. Nelson has been tagged for six runs in three of his four big-league starts since the beginning of August, staggering to a 10.69 ERA, 1.81 WHIP and 13:5 K:BB through 16 innings over that stretch, and with Arizona fighting to hang onto a wild-card spot, manager Torey Lovullo may have to consider other options for the fifth spot in his rotation.
Sep 11, 2023
Staying in rotation
Nelson is listed as the Diamondbacks' scheduled starter for Tuesday's game against the Mets at Citi Field.
ANALYSIS
Nelson was called up from Triple-A Reno last week and made his first start with the big club in nearly a month this past Thursday, covering 5.2 innings while giving up one run on two hits and two walks en route to picking up a win against the Cubs. Arizona has been struggling to reliable starting pitching beyond Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly throughout the season, so the decision to keep Nelson in the rotation on the heels of his strong showing his last time out comes as little surprise. Nelson tentatively lines up for a two-start week, with his second turn set to come this weekend at home versus the Cubs.

Nabs win in return
Nelson (7-7) earned the win over the Cubs on Thursday, allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out three batters over 5.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Nelson spent nearly a month in the minors before he was called up to start Thursday. The time away seemed to serve the right-hander well, as he didn't allow a hit until there was one out in the fifth frame and held Chicago to just two knocks overall. As usual, Nelson wasn't overpowering -- he induced just three swinging strikes -- but this was a very positive performance considering his struggles prior to being demoted. Over his previous two starts before being sent to the minors, Nelson had allowed 12 runs on 15 hits over six innings.
Sep 7, 2023
Recalled for start Thursday
Nelson was recalled from Triple-A Reno ahead of his scheduled start Thursday versus the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Nelson has struggled to a 5.47 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 82:37 K:BB in 125 innings (24 starts) this season at the major league level. The 25-year-old right-hander makes for an unappealing fantasy streaming option as he matches up against a hard-charging Cubs team.
Sep 6, 2023
Starting Thursday
Nelson will come up from Triple-A Reno to start Thursday's game against the Cubs, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Nelson has allowed 12 runs over six innings across his last two major-league starts, but he will be called upon to round out Arizona's rotation nonetheless. With a 5.47 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 82 strikeouts over 125 innings, Nelson has very little fantasy upside.
Sep 6, 2023
Refining slider in minors
Nelson has worked to improve his slider during his time in the minors, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Nelson's slider has shown progress over his last few starts at Triple-A Reno. "From the reports that I've gotten, it is (a little sharper)," Arizona pitching coach Brent Strom said. "It's a little bit harder. He's locating it more. Hasn't made as many mistakes with it." Nelson's made four starts for the Aces since his demotion in mid-August, pitching to a respectable 3.74 ERA (2.65 over the last three). The right-hander was part of the Diamondbacks' rotation for the first four-and-a-half months, posting a 5.74 ERA in 24 starts. Despite a mid-90s fastball, Nelson struggled to miss bats, and the organization is hoping an improved slider would help. If the club reaches down to the minors for a starter Thursday, Nelson, whose last outing was Sept. 2, is the most likely candidate. Arizona needs a starter after it demoted Slade Cecconi on Sunday.
Aug 13, 2023
Optioned to Triple-A
Nelson was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Nelson had notable struggles in his last two starts. In both his start Aug. 5 and Aug. 11, he allowed six earned runs in 3.0 innings. The 25-year-old has had season long struggles as well with an ERA above five. The starter will head back to Triple-A Reno for the first time since last season. In a corresponding move, the Diamondbacks selected Bryce Jarvis from Reno.
Aug 12, 2023
Tagged with six runs
Nelson (6-7) yielded six runs on seven hits and a walk over three innings Friday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Padres.
ANALYSIS
After serving up a two-run homer to Xander Bogaerts in the second inning, Nelson has tagged with four more runs in the third. Nelson has allowed at least five runs in four of his last seven appearances, posting a 7.60 ERA during that span. His recent rough stretch has raised his season ERA to 5.47 with an 84:38 K:BB across 128 innings. Nelson is currently lined up to start in Colorado next week.
Aug 6, 2023
Hit hard by Twins
Nelson (6-6) took the loss against Minnesota on Saturday, allowing six runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out five batters over three innings.
ANALYSIS
After posting a scoreless first frame, Nelson struggled to keep the Twins off the basepaths. He gave up three runs on three hits -- including a triple and a homer -- in the second inning, then surrendered three more runs on four hits in the third, which proved to be his final frame. Nelson matched his shortest outing of the campaign, quelling what had been a relatively effective four-game stretch following the All-Star break during which he had recorded two quality starts and posted a 3.55 ERA. While Nelson has been good enough this season to hold down a spot in Arizona's rotation, his 5.16 ERA and 5.9 K/9 aren't of much use in most fantasy formats.
Aug 1, 2023
Turns in quality start
Nelson allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out one over 6.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Aside from the lack of strikeouts, it was a strong showing for Nelson following his five-run mess against the Cardinals a week ago. The right-hander had quality starts in three of his six outings in July, though he continues to mix in fairly equal shares of good and bad performances. For the season, he's at a 4.84 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 75:36 K:BB through 119 innings over 22 starts. Nelson is projected for a road start in Minnesota this weekend.
Jul 25, 2023
Surrenders five runs
Nelson allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out one over six innings in a no-decision versus the Cardinals on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Nelson has had three good starts and two poor ones in July, with Monday's outing falling in the latter category. The right-hander was at least efficient, needing just 87 pitches (56 strikes) to get through six frames. He's now at a mediocre 4.97 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 74:33 K:BB through 112.1 innings over 21 starts this season, though he's shown little consistency from one outing to the next. He's projected for a home start versus the Mariners over the weekend.
Jul 20, 2023
Stifles Atlanta in victory
Nelson (6-5) earned the win over Atlanta on Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out five batters over seven innings.
ANALYSIS
Nelson didn't overpower the intimidating Atlanta offense, as he tallied just seven whiffs and five punchouts. However, the right-hander was efficient and effective during his seven frames, throwing 52 of 84 pitches for a strike and issuing just one walk. Two of the three hits against him left the park, but each was a solo shot, allowing Nelson to minimize the damage. He's gone seven or more innings in three of his past five outings, notching a quality start and a win in each of the three lengthy appearances. Nelson's 4.82 ERA on the campaign is far from spectacular, but it's partly the result of a handful of blow-ups, and he's given up two or fewer earned runs in nine of his 20 outings overall.
Jul 15, 2023
Gets little help Friday
Nelson didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 7-2 loss to the Blue Jays, giving up two runs (one earned) on nine hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out three without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander fell one out short of his sixth quality start of the season, getting lifted after 97 pitches (62 strikes), but despite the stingy outing Nelson was on the hook for his sixth loss of the year before Arizona managed to tie things up in the top of the seventh inning. Toronto then erupted for five runs in the bottom of the frame to put the game out of reach. Nelson has a mediocre 4.46 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 31:11 K:BB through 42.1 innings since the beginning of June, and his rotation spot could be in jeopardy if the Diamondbacks get aggressive at the trade deadline.
Jul 7, 2023
Struggles versus Mets
Nelson (5-5) allowed seven runs on nine hits and struck out just one over three innings to take the loss Thursday against the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Nelson gave up two-run home runs to Pete Alonso and Francisco Alvarez in the short start. Prior to Thursday, Nelson had allowed a combined 10 runs over his last four starts, spanning 23.1 innings. The poor outing vaulted his ERA to 5.19 with a 1.43 WHIP and 65:29 K:BB through 93.2 innings to close out the first half. The Diamondbacks will be on the road for their first two series out of the All-Star break, so Nelson's next start is likely to be either in Toronto or Atlanta.
Jul 2, 2023
Twirls gem Saturday
Nelson (5-4) allowed a run on three hits and a walk while striking out six over 7.1 innings to earn the win Saturday over the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Nelson gave up a solo home run to Anthony Rendon, but the Diamondbacks were able to take the lead in the sixth inning. After plenty of ups and downs early on, Nelson has turned in a pair of impressive starts in his last two outings, limiting the Angels and Giants to a combined two runs, six hits and three walks over 14.1 innings. The 25-year-old trimmed his ERA to 4.67 with a 1.38 WHIP and 64:29 K:BB through 90.2 innings over 17 starts. It remains to be seen if he can sustain his recent success, which he'll attempt to do in a projected home start versus the Mets next week.
Jun 25, 2023
Earns fourth win
Nelson (4-4) allowed one run on three hits and two walks over seven innings Sunday, striking out six and earning a win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Nelson worked through five scoreless frames before the Giants finally broke through in the sixth inning. He completed more than six innings for the first time this year while forcing a season-best 13 whiffs. Nelson has allowed fewer than two runs in four of his last eight starts, posting a 3.80 ERA during that span. For the season, he lowered his ERA to 4.97 with a 58:28 K:BB through 83.1 frames. Nelson's next outing is projected to be a road matchup against the Angels.
Jun 21, 2023
No-decision in Milwaukee
Nelson didn't factor in the decision Tuesday against the Brewers after he allowed three runs on six hits and no walks across five innings. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old was in line for the victory when he exited after the fifth inning, but the bullpen fell apart in Milwaukee's four-run seventh. Nelson tied his season high with six strikeouts and didn't issue a walk for the fourth time in 15 starts this year. He has a 5.31 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 52:26 K:BB over 76.1 innings and tentatively lines up to make his next start this weekend in San Francisco.
Jun 15, 2023
May be bumped from rotation
Manager Torey Lovullo did not commit to Nelson making his next scheduled start, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Nelson allowed 10 hits and five earned runs across four innings and took the loss in Thursday's game against the Phillies. He has had inconsistent results this season and has particularly struggled with walks of late, giving up 15 free passes across his last 31.2 innings while striking out only 20. It's unclear who the team would tab to take his place, though Drey Jameson has pitched in long relief -- he threw 2.1 scoreless innings Thursday -- and Brandon Pfaadt could get a second chance in the big-league rotation.
Jun 10, 2023
Blanks Tigers in win
Nelson (3-3) earned the win Saturday, allowing four hits and two walks over 5.2 scoreless innings against the Tigers. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
It was mostly smooth sailing for Nelson through the first five innings as Arizona's offense provided him with solid run support early. However, he was relieved by Austin Adams in the sixth after issuing back-to-back walks to load the bases, though the latter was able to get out of the jam unscathed. Nelson, who threw a season-high 98 pitches Saturday, has now won two of his last three starts, while it was the second time this season in which he didn't allow a run.
Jun 4, 2023
Struggles against Atlanta
Nelson (2-3) took the loss Saturday versus Atlanta, allowing three runs on six hits and four walks with no strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Nelson's four walks matched his season high, and he needed 98 pitches (64 strikes) to get 14 outs. This was always going to be a tough matchup, and the silver lining is that he didn't get shelled. The 25-year-old is now at a 5.40 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 37:22 K:BB through 61.2 innings through 12 starts this season. Nelson is lined up for a more favorable road start in Detroit his next time out.
May 30, 2023
Picks up second win
Nelson (2-2) earned the win over Colorado on Monday, allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out one batter over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Nelson was far from impressive Monday, as he struck out only one batter and notched just three whiffs. To his credit, he managed to hang around for five frames after giving up four runs over the first two innings, and an Arizona offensive surge put him in line for his first win in his last nine outings. Nelson had allowed just one run and four hits over his past 11.1 frames coming into the contest, but his overall 5.37 ERA on the campaign makes him a risky start in fantasy.
May 23, 2023
Quality start in Tuesday's win
Nelson didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Phillies, allowing one run on three hits over six innings. He struck out four without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander was sharp once again, firing 56 of 82 pitches for strikes as he delivered his third quality start in 10 outings. Nelson's given up two earned runs or less in three of his four trips to the mound in May, posting a 3.00 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB through 21 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next start, likely to come at home early next week against the Rockies.
May 17, 2023
Shines with six strikeouts
Nelson did not factor into the decision Wednesday, as he did not surrender a run while allowing one hit and four walks over 5.1 innings in a 5-3 victory over the Athletics. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Nelson delivered his best outing of the season Wednesday. He didn't allow a run for the first time this year, and he posted a season-high six strikeouts. He did run into some control problems in the sixth inning, as he walked the bases loaded. Luis Frias came on in relief and recorded two outs to strand the bases loaded and preserve Nelson's ERA, which sits at 5.48 this season.
May 13, 2023
Turns in shaky outing
Nelson did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk over 4.2 innings against San Francisco. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Nelson was lucky to get run support in this one, as his performance let a lot to be desired. The right-hander has now allowed multiple runs in seven of eight outing this year. What's more, the 25-year-old has a 6.20 ERA to start off the year, so he should not be viewed as a legitimate at this current moment.
May 7, 2023
Decent in no-decision
Nelson allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out three over five innings versus the Nationals on Sunday. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Nelson faded in the fifth inning, allowing a pair of runs, but Arizona regained the lead in their half of the frame. He would be denied the win when Miguel Castro blew the save in the ninth. This was the first time Nelson had allowed fewer than four runs in his last four starts. He has a rough 6.00 ERA and 1.53 WHIP with a 22:10 K:BB through 36 innings over seven starts this season. The 25-year-old is projected for a home start versus the Giants during next weekend's four-game set.
May 1, 2023
Roughed up by Rockies
Nelson (1-2) took the loss Sunday, allowing six runs on nine hits and one walk over four innings against Colorado. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Nelson struggled with the conditions at Coors Field, giving up three extra-base hits in four innings of action including a three-run shot by C.J. Cron in the third inning. Considering Nelson has failed to eclipse four strikeouts in a start this season while also giving up five home runs in six starts, he remains an unsavory fantasy option. However, Nelson should have a better chance for success in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to come against the Nationals.
Apr 26, 2023
Hit hard in loss
Nelson (1-1) was handed his first loss of the season Tuesday against the Royals, allowing four runs on 11 hits while striking out three over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Nelson gave up a season-high 11 hits but was able to keep the ball in the yard after allowing at least one home run in three of his past four starts. The Royals got on the board in the first, fourth and fifth innings with RBI singles and scored their fourth run against Nelson on a sacrifice fly. A positive for the 25-year-old is that he didn't issue a walk after he exhibited command issues his last time on the mound. Nelson has yet to show great consistency in the early going and will carry a 5.33 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and a 17:8 K:BB over 27 innings into his next start.
Apr 21, 2023
Has worst start of season
Nelson did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing five runs on three hits and three walks over five innings against the Padres. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Nelson's five runs allowed were the most he's given up across his four starts this year. The right-hander is tentatively slated to face the Royals at home in his next appearance.
Apr 16, 2023
Records best start of young career
Nelson did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing one run on five hits and zero walks over six innings against the Marlins. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Nelson pitched a gem, showing why Arizona picked him in the second round of the 2019 draft. The 25-year-old showed the command of a seasoned veteran, as this was the first start of his career in which he did not allow a walk. The Nevada native's next assignment will be a major test, as he'll be facing the star-studded Padres lineup at home in a few days.
Apr 10, 2023
Picks up win with quality start
Nelson (1-0) earned the win Sunday against the Dodgers after he allowed three runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks across six innings.
ANALYSIS
Nelson generated just seven swinging strikes but did enough to limit Los Angeles and secure his first win of the season. The 25-year-old has faced the Dodgers and Padres in his first two starts of 2023, and he fared well enough with three runs given up in each outing. The right-hander tentatively lines up for a more favorable matchup versus the Marlins next weekend.
Apr 4, 2023
Allows three runs in loss
Nelson did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks over five innings in a 5-4 loss against San Diego. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Nelson gave up a two-run homer to Juan Soto in the first and an RBI single to Manny Machado in the second, but he settled down after that and finished with three scoreless frames. The 2019 second-round pick made his MLB debut late last year, posting a 1.47 ERA and 0.82 WHIP with a 16:6 K:BB across three starts (18.1 innings), but he figures to face a little adversity in his first full campaign. Given the opponent, Nelson's 2023 debut was solid, but it doesn't get much easier for the rookie, who's scheduled to pitch next against the Dodgers on Sunday.
Mar 29, 2023
Makes final spring start
Nelson allowed one run on four hits while striking out five over 5.2 innings in Tuesday's spring start against Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Nelson made steady improvement over the course of the spring, which eventually earned him the No. 5 starter job over Drey Jameson, Tommy Henry and Brandon Pfaadt. The right-hander is ticketed to make his first regular-season start Monday, April 3, on the road against the Padres.
Mar 26, 2023
Earns rotation spot
Nelson was named the Diamondbacks' No. 5 starter Sunday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old surrendered 12 runs with a 13:8 K:BB across 14.1 innings during spring training but still won the rotation spot over Drey Jameson. Nelson was impressive in his first taste of the big leagues last season with a 1.47 ERA, 0.82 WHIP in 18.1 frames and clearly has upside, but he could be a risky bet for fantasy managers requiring immediate production.
Mar 24, 2023
Throws into fifth inning
Nelson allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three over 4.2 innings in Thursday's split-squad start against the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Nelson set down the side in three of his four full innings before the Cubs knocked him around in the fifth inning, prompting his departure. It was an interesting day for those monitoring the competition for the No. 5 starter job in the Diamondbacks' rotation. Nelson's competitor, Drey Jameson, was hurling the other split-squad game, and he posted similar numbers. It looks like one more outing for each before manager Torey Lovullo makes a decision.
Mar 18, 2023
Best outing yet
Nelson allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out six over 4.1 innings in Friday's spring start against Colorado.
ANALYSIS
The battle for the final rotation spot is heating up late in camp. Prospect Brandon Pfaadt has been the most consistent throughout, but he would have to be added to the 40-man roster which could sway the decision toward Nelson. His spring got off to a rocky start, but the right-hander cobbled together a couple of strong outings the past week. The competition has evolved since the start of camp with Drey Jameson and Tommy Henry each topping the group on the projected roster iterations of MLB.com's Steve Gilbert, but it's now looking more like Nelson or Pfaadt.
Mar 13, 2023
Pitches multiple relief innings
Nelson allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out two over 2.2. relief innings in Sunday's spring game against Colorado.
ANALYSIS
It was a day for the two leading candidates for the No. 5 starter job. Drew Jameson started for the Diamondbacks, giving up five runs over three-plus innings, while Nelson threw multiple relief innings. Statistically, Jameson has produced better Cactus League results, but Nelson is trending upward, including a promising stint in "B" game that doesn't count toward his spring-training statistics. Others in the hunt for the same role are Tommy Henry and Brandon Pfaadt.
Mar 9, 2023
Throws B game
Nelson allowed four runs on three hits and one walk while striking out six over 2.2 innings in a "B" game against the Rangers on Tuesday, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
The outing was Nelson's third Cactus League start, and he's allowed multiple runs in all three, although this third outing was the best of the lot. He had issues throwing quality strikes in the first two, but the right-hander was able to land his off-speed stuff in the zone. Nelson is competing primarily with Drey Jameson for the final rotation spot with Tommy Henry and Brandon Pfaadt in the mix to a lesser extent.
Mar 3, 2023
Has second rocky start
Nelson allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking one over 1.2 innings in Thursday's spring game against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Nelson, who is in the mix for the final spot in the rotation, had a second consecutive rocky outing to being the Cactus League, raising his spring ERA to 23.63 through 2.2 innings. It's wise for fantasy managers to recognize that pitchers are working on things during spring training, so results aren't primary. That's a point the right-hander told Michael Reynolds of MLB.com, when discussing the two-run, first-inning home run Freddie Freeman hit on a changeup, a pitch Nelson wouldn't normally throw to a hitter like Freeman. "Sometimes my plan doesn't line up with how to attack these hitters [in spring training]," Nelson said. "I probably shouldn't have thrown that changeup in the zone, but I'm just trying to fill up the zone with all my pitches right now." Arizona manager Torey Lovullo is confident Nelson will settle in with more reps and innings.
Feb 26, 2023
Chased in second inning
Nelson allowed four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out one over one-plus innings in Saturday's spring game against Colorado. "I think the fastball felt good, fastball command felt good," Nelson told Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. "I threw some offspeed pitches I really liked, (but) I think there's still consistency with that that can better."
ANALYSIS
Nelson game up a pair of run-scoring doubles in the first inning then was removed after allowed the first two batters to reach base in the second. Those runners eventually came around to score while Eric Yardley was on the mound. Nelson is one of two lead candidates, along with Drey Jameson, to fill the fifth-starter job. Jameson allowed a hit and a walk over two scoreless innings in a split-squad game against the Athletics.
Feb 23, 2023
To make Cactus debut Saturday
Nelson (shoulder) will start the Diamondbacks' Cactus League home opener Saturday against the Rockies, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Drey Jameson will get the split-squad nod over at the Athletics' minor league complex. Those two are the lead candidates to claim the No. 5 spot in the Diamondbacks' rotation out of camp this spring, though word is that top prospect Brandon Pfaadt might be somewhere in that mix as well. Nelson suffered a right scapula injury toward the end of the 2022 season but is now fully healthy here in February of 2023.
Feb 16, 2023
In mix for final rotation spot
Nelson (shoulder) is in the mix for the No. 5 starter job, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Nelson was shut down at the end of the 2022 with a right scapula injury, but at the time, the Diamondbacks did not expect the injury to impact him going forward. The right-hander had a nice three-start run in September before the injury ended his season, posting a 1.47 ERA and 0.82 WHIP over 18.1 innings. His primary competition figures to come from Drey Jameson and Tommy Henry with top pitching prospect Brandon Pfaadt having an outside shot.
Sep 21, 2022
Lands on injured list
Nelson was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with right scapula inflammation.
ANALYSIS
Nelson had X-rays come back negative after he was struck by a comebacker in the right forearm during Sunday's start against the Padres, but he's now headed to the IL with a inflammation around his shoulder. The 24-year-old will be eligible to return for the last couple days of the regular season, though it's unclear if he's expected to be ready to pitch by that point.
Sep 20, 2022
Avoids serious damage
X-rays taken on Nelson's forearm following Sunday's game came back negative, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports. "It's just a bruise, we dodged a bullet," Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said.
ANALYSIS
Nelson took a comebacker off the forearm of his pitching arm and was removed after taking a warmup pitch. He said it felt good and wanted to stay in the game, but Lovullo exercised caution and removed the young hurler. Nelson lines up to pitch Friday, although those plans could change,
Sep 18, 2022
Exits with apparent injury
Nelson was removed from Sunday's game against the Padres in the top of the sixth inning after being hit by a comebacker on his upper right arm, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Nelson allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits and four walks while striking out three in 5.1 innings to begin Sunday's matchup, but his start was cut short due to his injury. He threw a few warmup pitches and seemed to want to stay in Sunday's matchup, but he was ultimately removed. If he's cleared to make his next turn through the rotation, he tentatively lines up to start at home against the Giants on Friday.
Sep 13, 2022
Stymies Dodgers in no-decision
Nelson didn't factor in the decision against the Dodgers on Monday despite pitching six scoreless innings, during which he allowed two hits and two walks while striking out six batters.
ANALYSIS
Nelson impressed in his first big-league start last week, tossing seven shutout frames against San Diego. He was arguably as dominant against the league's top-scoring club Monday, yielding only two hits -- a single and a triple -- and keeping Los Angeles off the scoreboard through six frames. The rookie right-hander racked up 13 swinging strikes and fanned six batters, nearly matching the mark of seven strikeouts he registered in his debut. Nelson has thrown 13 straight scoreless innings to begin his career and will almost certainly remain in the rotation, with a rematch against the Padres this weekend looking like his next trip to the mound.
Sep 11, 2022
Awarded another start
Nelson is slated to start Monday's game against the Dodgers at Chase Field, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Nelson will unsurprisingly receive another turn through the rotation after he dazzled in his MLB debut Sept. 5 against the Padres, striking out seven over seven scoreless frames in a winning effort. The Dodgers present a stiff test for the 24-year-old righty, who will tentatively line up for a two-start week. His second turn comes next weekend at home in a rematch with the Padres.

Dominant in big-league debut
Nelson (1-0) earned the win over San Diego on Monday, pitching seven scoreless innings during which he gave up four hits and struck out seven batters without issuing a walk.
ANALYSIS
Nelson wasn't overly impressive in the minors this season, posting a 5.43 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 128:47 K:BB over 136 innings across 26 Triple-A starts. He looked every part a major-leaguer in his big-league debut, however, holding the Padres to four hits and no runs. The rookie right-hander threw 61 of 87 pitches for strikes in an efficient seven frames. Given his impressive performance Monday, Nelson is likely to get another turn in what currently shapes up as a six-man rotation.
