Goes deep again Friday
Torkelson went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in Friday's loss to the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson went deep for the second straight game and seventh time this month, bringing his season total to 31 home runs. The 24-year-old has established himself as a good source of power in his second MLB campaign, and he's managed to increase his batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage from his 2022 rookie season. Torkelson should continue to trend upward in 2024.
Sep 28, 2023
Reaches 30 home runs
Torkelson went 2-for-7 with a walk, a three-run home run and two runs scored across both games of Thursday's doubleheader against the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson popped his 30th home run of the season in the nightcap, giving him six long balls this month. That's on top of nine home runs in August as the youngster has upped his power output down the stretch. Torkelson could still stand to improve his batting average moving forward, but he's a legitimate slugger who has plenty of fantasy upside.
Sep 24, 2023
Provides offense in win
Torkelson went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Sunday's 2-0 win over the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson delivered his 33rd double of the season in this one, though it was his third-inning single that drove in the only two runs. The 24-year-old has had a nice sophomore campaign, as he's now up to 88 RBI across 153 games. He's collected 19 of those RBI in 21 games this month.
Sep 20, 2023
Blasts homer in loss
Torkelson went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson had gone 0-for-9 over his last two games before receiving rest for Monday's series opener. He homered in the first inning to snap the mini-slump, and he's now batting .277 (18-for-65) over 16 contests in September. While he still has a poor .233 batting average, he's posted a .763 OPS, 29 homers, 84 RBI, 83 runs scored and three stolen bases across 148 games this season.
Sep 18, 2023
Receives rare day off
Torkelson is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson has started every game since the All-Star break and has not had a day off since June 28, but both streaks will come to an end Monday. Tyler Nevin will get the start at first base in Torkelson's place.
Sep 16, 2023
Extends hitting streak
Torkelson went 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored and two RBI in Friday's win over the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson extended his hitting streak to six games, a span in which he's gone 9-for-27 with a home run and seven RBI. Overall this month, the youngster is batting a robust .397 with four home runs and 14 RBI across 13 contests. Torkelson is trending up as he nears the end of his second MLB campaign.
Sep 13, 2023
Launches 28th home run
Torkelson went 2-for-4 with a walk and a two-run home run in Wednesday's loss to the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson got the Tigers on the board in the third inning with his 28th home run of the season. The young slugger has four of those long balls in 11 games this month, and with Detroit still set to play 17 more contests, Torkelson has a strong chance to reach the 30-homer plateau for the first time in his career.
Sep 10, 2023
Doubles, drives in two Sunday
Torkelson went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and two RBI in Sunday's 3-2 win over the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson has done much of his damage this year with the long ball, but he managed to make an impact Sunday without going deep. The youngster is off to a good start this month, batting .333 in September with six extra-base hits and nine RBI in just nine games. Torkelson seems primed to finish his second MLB campaign on a high note over the next few weeks.
Sep 7, 2023
Homers twice in rout
Torkelson went 2-for-4 with a walk, two home runs and four total RBI in Thursday's 10-3 win over the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson went deep in the first inning with a runner on, then repeated the trick in the fourth inning. The young infielder now has 27 long balls this season after hitting just eight of them as a rookie last year. Torkelson's power has been particularly impactful since the beginning of August, as he now has 11 home runs across his last 34 games. The 24-year-old seems likely to reach 30 long balls as he builds momentum heading into 2024.
Sep 4, 2023
Hits key home run Sunday
Torkelson went 1-for-4 with a walk and a solo home run in Sunday's 3-2 win over the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
It was a 2-2 game until the top of the seventh inning, when Torkelson blasted his 25th home run of the season. It's a big step forward for the youngster, who hit just eight home runs as a rookie last year. Torkelson has been better across the board in his sophomore campaign with a .230/.317/.441 slash line compared to .203/.285/.319 in 2022.
Sep 3, 2023
Goes 3-for-4 in rout
Torkelson went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's 10-0 victory over the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old got the best of Mike Clevinger, lacing a single and a pair of run-scoring doubles off the White Sox starter. Across Torkelson's previous 10 games, the second-year first baseman hit just .086 (3-for-35) with 15 strikeouts. However, Saturday's impressive performance improved his season-long slash line to .230/.316/.437, and he now has 24 home runs, 71 RBI, and 74 runs in 574 plate appearances.
Aug 30, 2023
Goes deep again Wednesday
Torkelson went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's loss to the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson went deep in the sixth inning against New York starter Gerrit Cole, giving him 24 home runs this season and nine in August alone. The youngster struck out in his other three at-bats, and he's striking out just under 25 percent of the time on the year. That will be an area for Torkelson to improve upon if he wants to take another step forward in 2024, though he's definitely shown signs of progress in his second MLB campaign,
Aug 21, 2023
Continues power surge Monday
Torkelson went 4-for-5 with a double, a solo home run and two additional runs scored in Monday's loss against the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson got the Tigers on the board with a solo homer off Javier Assad in the sixth inning. The 23-year-old Torkelson is up to 23 homers on the year, with eight in his last 12 games -- he's gone 17-for-43 (.395) over that span. With his recent hot streak, Torkelson's slash line is up to .239/.319/.452 with 69 RBI and 67 runs scored across 526 plate appearances in his sophomore campaign.
Aug 20, 2023
Blasts 22nd home run
Torkelson went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's win over the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Following a walk by Matt Vierling to begin the top of the first, Torkleson sent an 0-1 pitch over the wall in right for an opposite field homer. The two-run blast was his fifth in eight games and seventh this month, though his previous six August home runs were all solo shots. The batting average is still a sub-par .233 but Torkleson's power surge is beginning to provide the Tigers with the type of production they expected when they made him the first overall selection in the 2020 draft.
Aug 16, 2023
Homers two more times Wednesday
Torkelson went 2-for-5 with two solo home runs in Wednesday's 8-7 win over the Twins.
ANALYSIS
After going deep Tuesday night, Torkelson hit two more bombs during Wednesday afternoon's contest, bringing him to 21 home runs for the season. The 23-year-old slugger now has four multi-homer games this year, including two of them in the last week against Minnesota.
Aug 15, 2023
Cranks 19th home run
Torkelson went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson is showing some progress in his second MLB campaign, as he's now up to 19 home runs, including four this month in 13 games. He's still batting only .228, so there's some room for growth to become a more consistent hitter who isn't as boom or bust. Torkelson should remain a lineup staple the rest of this season for the rebuilding Tigers, and 2024 could be his true breakout year if he continues to develop.
Aug 13, 2023
Goes deep in four-hit game
Torkelson went 4-for-4 with a double and a solo home run in Saturday's 6-2 win over the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson turned in his first four-hit game of the season and third home run over the last four games. For the year, the 23-year-old is now up to 18 long balls, though he's batting just .229. The skills are there, however, for Torkelson to push that average upward the rest of the way.
Aug 9, 2023
Goes deep twice in win
Torkelson went 2-for-4 with a walk, two solo home runs and three runs scored in Wednesday's win over the Twins.
ANALYSIS
It was a three true outcomes night for Torkelson, as he struck out in his other two at-bats. The youngster was in a 2-for-23 slump before Wednesday, and that's kind of been par for the course this year. Torkelson has displayed good pop with 17 home runs, but he's also not making consistent contact with just a .225 batting average.
Aug 6, 2023
On base three times Sunday
Torkelson went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs scored in Sunday's loss to the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson ended on 0-for-13 skid at the plate with a double to lead off the fourth inning. The 23-year-old has cooled off considerably since returning from the All-Star break and is hitting .204/.306/.315 with one home run, seven RBI, five runs and an 8:15 BB:K in his last 15 games. Despite hitting only one home run since July 23, Torkelson still leads the team with 15.
Jul 23, 2023
Homers Sunday
Torkelson went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's victory over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
After going 0-for-10 in his previous three games, Torkelson opened the scoring in the first inning Sunday with a solo homer off Joe Musgrove, his 15th long ball of the year. The 23-year-old Torkelson has been productive of late, even with his recent cold spell -- he's gone 18-for-70 (.257) with an .835 OPS in 18 games since the start of July. Overall, the first baseman is slashing .230/.307/.414 with 53 RBI and 49 runs scored through 417 plate appearances in his sophomore campaign.
Jul 18, 2023
Goes deep twice Tuesday
Torkelson went 3-for-5 with a double, two home runs and five RBI in Tuesday's 11-10 loss to the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson powered the Tigers in the slug fest, hitting his 13th and 14th home runs of the season. It was his second time in the last 15 games that he's gone deep twice in the same contest, and he's batting an even .300 during that span. The 23-year-old seems to be getting more comfortable at the MLB level and could have a big finish to the year in store.
Jul 2, 2023
Pops 12th homer
Torkelson went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, a double, two walks and two additional runs scored in Sunday's 14-9 win over the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson's seventh-inning blast was his 12th homer of the year and his fourth in his last five games. Over that span, he's gone 7-for-18 (.389) with eight RBI and five walks. It's still a small stretch of success, but it appears the first baseman is getting more comfortable midway through his second big-league season. He's up to a .228/.312/.404 slash line with 42 RBI, 40 runs scored, 18 doubles and two stolen bases through 81 contests.
Jun 29, 2023
Goes deep twice Thursday
Torkelson went 2-for-3 with two walks, two home runs and four RBI in Thursday's 8-5 win over the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson enjoyed a career day at the plate Thursday, recording his first multi-home run game in his second MLB season. The four RBI were also a career best. Torkelson now leads the team with 11 long balls and 39 RBI this season. Despite a middling .696 OPS overall, the 23-year-old is showing signs of living up to his potential as the former No. 1 overall pick.
Jun 28, 2023
Out Wednesday vs. Rangers
Torkelson is not in the starting lineup versus the Rangers on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson gets a day off after hitting his ninth homer of the season in the loss to Texas on Tuesday. Tyler Nevin is hitting seventh and playing first base with Torkelson beginning Wednesday's bout on the bench.
Jun 27, 2023
Pops ninth home run
Torkelson went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 8-3 loss to the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson had the only extra-base hit for the Tigers, delivering his ninth long ball of the season in the eighth inning. The 23-year-old has now surpassed his home run total from his 2022 rookie campaign in 33 fewer games, which is a promising sign for his power development. He's still struggling to make consistent contact, however, with a .218 batting average.
Jun 19, 2023
Hits eighth home run
Torkelson went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson played in all four games of the weekend series against Minnesota, finishing 4-for-17 (.235) with his eighth home run of the year and four RBI. The youngster is also now batting .235 for the season, so this past weekend was a good representation of his production all year. Fantasy managers are still waiting for the former No. 1 overall pick to have a true breakout in his second MLB campaign.
Jun 15, 2023
Continues good stretch
Torkelson went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored in Thursday's win over the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson extended his hitting streak to five games and he's batting .381 during the stretch. The former No. 1 overall pick has yet to truly break out at the MLB level, but the talent is there for him to string together more games like this one. Torkelson has pushed his OPS to .711, which is a significant improvement from the .604 mark he posted last year as a rookie.
Jun 14, 2023
Goes deep in doubleheader
Torkelson went 2-for-6 with three walks, a solo home run and two runs scored across both games of Wednesday's doubleheader against Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson did most of his damage during the first game of the day, reaching base three times and hitting his seventh home run of the season. The 23-year-old has yet to really take off with a .235 batting average and .706 OPS, but the rebuilding Tigers should continue to give him ample playing time.
Jun 12, 2023
Drives in three runs
Torkelson went 3-for-6 with a home run and three RBI in Monday's win over Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson belted a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth inning before providing the walk-off hit in the 10th. He collected three hits for the third time this season and the first since May 9. Torkelson is now slashing .232/.315/.371 with six homers and 29 RBI through 270 plate appearances on the year. He has four extra-base hits over the last eight games despite going 7-for-32 (.219) in the process.
Jun 11, 2023
Moves up in order Sunday
Torkelson is starting at first base and batting second in Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson has yet to bat higher than third this season, and he's primarily slotted in as Detroit's No. 4 or 5 hitter. The move up in the order is probably more about the struggling Tigers shaking things up than the 23-year-old surging at the plate. Torkelson is batting just .225 overall this season and only .194 over his past 10 games.
Jun 4, 2023
Provides offense in loss
Torkelson went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 6-2 loss to the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson's blast off Michael Kopech in the fourth inning opened the scoring, but it was all the Tigers could muster in the contest. This was Torkelson's first homer in 14 games, a span in which he's gone just 11-for-50 (.220) with three doubles and four RBI. The first baseman is up to five homers, 26 RBI, 23 runs scored, two stolen bases and a .234/.315/.368 slash line over 56 contests overall. Despite the lackluster numbers, the Tigers seem content with letting the 23-year-old learn on the job in another rebuilding year.
Jun 2, 2023
Records second steal
Torkelson went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Friday's 3-0 loss to the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson accounted for two of the Tigers' nine baserunners. Since May 16, the first baseman has gone 15-for-58 (.259) with a 13:18 BB:K. It's a slight improvement on his .239/.322/.363 slash line and 10 percent walk rate for the season. He's added four home runs, two steals, 24 RBI and 22 runs scored through 54 contests in a near-everyday role.
May 25, 2023
Good game in win
Torkelson went 2-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored in Thursday's win over the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson and Riley Greene had identical stat lines from the third and fourth spots in the lineup. While Greene seems to be breaking out in his sophomore campaign, Torkelson hasn't seen the same level of success, as he's only batting .242 with a .681 OPS. Both figures are up from last year, however, and the 23-year-old has the talent to keep trending upward through the summer months.
May 21, 2023
Carries offense in loss
Torkelson went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 5-2 loss to the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
He mashed a Patrick Corbin fastball over the wall in left-center field in the first inning, but it was all the offense the Tigers could muster. Torkelson has found a groove in May, and through 16 games the 23-year-old is slashing .290/.333/.484 with six doubles, two homers and nine RBI.
May 17, 2023
Doubles twice in win
Torkelson went 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's 4-0 victory over Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
Torkleson extended Detroit's lead to 2-0 with his RBI double in the first inning. He'd lead off the third with his second double, eventually scoring on an errant pickoff attempt. The 23-year-old Torkelson is now 15-for-46 in his last 12 games, with six doubles and a home run in that span. Following a slow start to the season, he's now slashing .238/.290/.367 with three homers, 14 runs scored and 18 RBI through 162 plate appearances.
May 10, 2023
Adds three hits Tuesday
Torkelson went 3-for-4 with a double in Tuesday's loss against the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson has now hit safely in five straight games, going 9-for-22 with three doubles and a homer in that span. After a disappointing rookie campaign and a slow start to the 2023 season, Torkelson is starting to hint at the potential that made him the first-overall pick in the 2020 draft. He's boosted his slash line to .240/.294/.372 with three home runs, 12 runs scored and 16 RBI through 143 plate appearances this year.
May 8, 2023
Goes yard in defeat
Torkelson went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored in Sunday's 12-6 loss to the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson took Steven Matz deep to center in the fourth to get the Tigers on the board. It was his first home run since April 19 and just his third of the year. The 23-year-old does have three multi-hit efforts over his last five games, but is still slashing just .223/.276/.347 with 16 RBI, 12 runs and an 8:28 BB:K over 134 plate appearances.
May 7, 2023
Plates two runs Saturday
Torkelson went 2-for-5 with two RBI in Saturday's 6-5 win over the Cardinals in 10 innings.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson's second base hit of the day drove in Riley Greene in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game before Akil Baddoo's RBI double in the top of the 10th sealed the win for Detroit. The second-year first baseman will be back in the lineup for Sunday's series finale in St. Louis, batting in the cleanup spot.
Apr 19, 2023
Goes deep Wednesday
Torkelson went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double and a solo home run in Wednesday's loss to the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
The Tigers sputtered on offense in the 3-2 defeat, but Torkelson was still able to contribute. The second year player now has two home runs and a .651 OPS across 17 games. Those aren't great numbers, but they seem to be a small step forward after Torkelson hit eight home runs and posted a .604 OPS across 110 games last season. He should continue to see regular playing time and has the talent to trend upward.
Apr 16, 2023
Sitting Sunday vs. Giants
Torkelson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson will get a day of rest Sunday for the series finale against San Francisco. Tyler Nevin will handle first base duties in his absence and hit seventh.
Apr 4, 2023
Goes deep in three-hit game
Torkelson went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBI in Tuesday's win over the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson doubled home a run in the top of the first inning, then blasted a two-run shot in the eighth for his first home run of the season. The 23-year-old had a tough rookie campaign last year, though there's plenty of talent here, so fantasy managers should stick with him, especially following Tuesday's strong performance.
Mar 19, 2023
Starting to heat up
Torkelson went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson got off to a 3-for-18 start at the plate in spring training. Since then, however, he's gone 7-for-19 with two doubles, and Saturday's home run was his first in Grapefruit League action. Torkelson struggled as a rookie in 2022, but the talent is there for him to take a big step forward in his second MLB season, and he seems to be building some momentum as the team approaches Opening Day.
Mar 8, 2023
Struggling this spring
Torkelson has just three hits in 18 Grapefruit League at-bats so far with six strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson is off to a slow start, which is discouraging after he struggled to a .203/.285/.319 slash line as a rookie in 2022. The team has hinted that the 23-year-old will serve as the everyday first baseman, and he should be given plenty of opportunities to succeed as the former No. 1 overall pick. Fantasy managers should stay patient, as Torkelson has the talent and pedigree to get rolling at any point.
Jan 19, 2023
In line to be primary first baseman
Torkelson is likely to serve as the Tigers' everyday first baseman in 2023, manager A.J. Hinch intimated Thursday.
ANALYSIS
When you examined the Tigers' likely roster construction, it's difficult to envision anyone else but Torkelson at first, especially since Miguel Cabrera is viewed as a designated hitter now. Still, it's nice to hear Hinch hint that Torkelson will be given plenty of leash. The former No. 1 overall pick really struggled in 2022, posting a lowly .604 OPS with eight home runs over 110 games. He wasn't great after a demotion to Triple-A Toledo, either, with a .738 OPS. Still, Torkelson is just 23 and has plenty of pedigree, offering hope that he could figure things out in 2023.
Oct 5, 2022
Ends hitless stretch
Torkelson went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and an additional run during a 9-6 loss in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson delivered his sixth three-hit game of the season with singles in the third and fifth innings and a solo home run in the sixth. The trio of hits snapped a 23 at-bat hitless stretch over the 23-year-old's previous seven contests as the top prospect has endured a rough ending to what has been a disappointing rookie season. Torkelson is slashing .204/.285/.607 with eight home runs, 37 runs and 28 RBI in 109 games.
Oct 3, 2022
Takes seat Monday
Torkelson isn't starting Monday against the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson started the last three games but went 0-for-10 with five strikeouts. He'll get a breather while Harold Castro takes over at first base and bats fifth.
Sep 29, 2022
Resting for day game
Torkelson is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Harold Castro will take over at first base while the rookie rests for the series finale. Torkelson started in both of the first two matchups with Kansas City, going 0-for-7 with a walk and two strikeouts.
Sep 25, 2022
Sitting Sunday
Torkelson is not in Sunday's lineup against the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson is hitting .179 with zero home runs over his last 10 games, but on the bright side, he is only striking out at a 16.7 percent clip over that stretch. Harold Castro will start at first base and hit third.
Sep 19, 2022
Three hits in romp
Torkelson went 3-for-4 with a walk, two doubles and three runs scored in Monday's 11-0 win over the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson played a big role in an easy Detroit win, and it was the rookie's second three-hit effort this month. It's been a tough debut season overall, though the 23-year-old is batting a solid .280 in September. Torkelson certainly has the pedigree, and he could be in line for a nice 2023 campaign if he carries over any momentum into the offseason.
Sep 14, 2022
Out of Wednesday's lineup
Torkelson is not in Wednesday's lineup against the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson is hitting .265/.375/.471 with one home run, six strikeouts and four walks in 10 games since returning from Triple-A. Harold Castro will start at first base and hit third.
Sep 12, 2022
Regains hold of everyday role
Torkelson will start at first base and bat fifth in Monday's game against the Astros.
ANALYSIS
After a rough start to begin his MLB career followed by an underwhelming six-week run at Triple-A Toledo, Torkelson is finally beginning to resemble the top-flight prospect he was billed as heading into the season since he rejoined the Tigers as a September call-up. Over his first eight games on the month, Torkelson is slashing .333/.438/.593 with a 15.6 percent strikeout rate. The September sample is a small one, but it's been enough for Torkelson to re-emerge as the team's everyday first baseman. He'll be picking up his seventh consecutive start Monday.
Sep 7, 2022
Blasts sixth home run
Torkelson went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson hit his sixth home run of the season and first since getting recalled from Triple-A Toledo earlier this month. His rookie season hasn't lived up to expectations, as the 23-year-old is batting just .197 with a .594 OPS, though the talent is there for him to bounce back in 2023 and deliver on the promise that made him the top pick of the 2020 draft.
Sep 4, 2022
Back on bench Sunday
Torkelson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson had started at first base in both of the Tigers' last two games, once against a lefty (Daniel Lynch) and once against a righty (Jonathan Heasley). He went 0-for-5 between those contests, though he managed to reach base twice on hit-by-pitches and once via a walk. Torkelson remains a key foundational piece for the rebuilding Tigers, but he won't be assured an everyday role in September in light of his struggles at the big-league level this season along with his middling production at Triple-A Toledo prior to his promotion Thursday. Harold Castro will start at first base and bat cleanup Sunday and still looks to be the Tigers' preferred option, at least for now.
Sep 1, 2022
Receives call-up
The Tigers recalled Torkelson from Triple-A Toledo on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson and infield prospect Ryan Kreidler received promotions from Toledo with the Tigers' 26-man roster expanding to 28 on Thursday. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 First-Year Player Draft got off to a rough start to his big-league career earlier this season, turning in a .197/.282/.295 slash line over 298 plate appearances before being demoted to Toledo on July 17. His .737 OPS over 35 games at Triple-A didn't mark a major improvement for the 23-year-old considering the level of competition, so the Tigers may not be eager to reinstall him as their everyday first baseman in September. Harold Castro will remain in the lineup at first base in Thursday's series finale with the Mariners, while Torkelson hits the bench.

Call-up coming Thursday
The Tigers plan to recall Torkelson from Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
After being optioned to Toledo on July 17, Torkelson was a league-average performer (100 wRC+) in the minors, as he slashed an unremarkable .228/.347/.394 with a 25.5 percent strikeout rate over 150 plate appearances. Though he didn't show the major offensive turnaround at Triple-A that the Tigers had hoped, Torkelson looks like he'll receive the call back to Detroit nonetheless. However, due to his poor showing with Detroit over the first three months of the season along with his lackluster production at Triple-A, Torkelson won't be a lock to reclaim the everyday role at first base and may have to share the position with Harold Castro.

Optioned to Triple-A
Torkelson was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After initially not being included in Sunday's lineup, Torkelson was demoted to Triple-A. The rookie has spent the entire season to this point in the majors, but since June 20, he's batted .194 with one homer, five RBI and eight runs over 72 at-bats in 22 games. Overall, the first baseman is batting .197 with five homers, 21 RBI and 25 runs over 264 at-bats in 83 contests this year. The demotion may just be temporary until he finds his groove again. Considering that the Tigers are completely out of playoff contention, it doesn't really make sense for Torkelson to be with Toledo for long.
Jul 17, 2022
Breather Sunday
Torkelson is not starting Sunday's contest versus the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson will get a day off after he went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in Saturday's loss. Harold Castro will take over at first base and bat fifth in Sunday's matchup.
Jul 15, 2022
Not in Friday's lineup
Torkelson isn't starting Friday against the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson drew starts in the last eight games and hit .222 with two doubles, three runs and an RBI. Harold Castro is starting at first base and batting fifth Friday.
Jul 12, 2022
Tallies three hits in win
Torkelson went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's win over the Royals.
ANALYSIS
The three-hit effort pushed Torkelson's average to .201, which is a small step forward for the rookie, who's been below the .200 mark most of the season. The 22-year-old has shown flashes of potential amid his struggles, and he should continue to see plenty of playing time, which would make him an interesting fantasy option if he got hot at the plate.
Jul 7, 2022
Day off Thursday
Torkelson isn't in the lineup Thursday against the White Sox, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson started in the last three matchups and went 2-for-11 with two runs, an RBI, a walk and five strikeouts. Kody Clemens is taking over at first base and batting eighth Thursday.
Jul 4, 2022
Not starting in matinee
Torkelson isn't starting the first game of Monday's doubleheader against the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Sunday's loss to Kansas City, but he'll be out of the lineup for the second time in the last three games. Kody Clemens is taking over at first base and batting seventh.
Jul 3, 2022
Homers in return to lineup
Torkelson went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Sunday's 7-4 loss to the Royals.
ANALYSIS
The Tigers were unable to keep up with the Royals offensively Sunday, but Torkelson put Detroit on the board with his fifth homer of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning. The 22-year-old's bat has been quiet recently, as he's hit just .167 with a homer, a double, three runs and two RBI over his last nine games. However, it's been encouraging to see him play in the last two matchups after being hit in the head by a pitch during Friday's series opener.
Jul 3, 2022
Back in action for series finale
Torkelson (head) will start at first base and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Royals.
ANALYSIS
The prized rookie was hit in the head by a pitch in Friday's series opener and sat out Saturday's 4-3 win as a result, but he apparently passed all concussion tests in advance of Sunday's contest and will reclaim his spot in the lineup. Torkelson closed June with a .167/.224/.205 slash line and hasn't demonstrated the improvement the Tigers were counting on after what had been an already rough start to his big-league career.
Jul 2, 2022
Not in Saturday's lineup
Torkelson (head) isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson was removed from Friday's game against Kansas City after he was hit in the head by a pitch, and he'll be out of the lineup for at least one additional matchup. It's not clear whether he'll be available off the bench, but Kody Clemens will start at first base and bat eighth.
Jul 1, 2022
Exits after pitch hits head
Torkelson left Friday's game against the Royals after getting hit in the head by a pitch, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The pitch appeared to catch the ear flap on Torkelson's helmet, Woodbery reports, preventing further damage. The rookie first baseman has avoided a concussion but is expected to head to the bench Saturday.
Jun 25, 2022
Day off Saturday
Torkelson isn't starting Saturday against Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson went 1-for-11 with a walk and a strikeout over the last three games and will get a breather Saturday. Harold Castro is starting at first base and batting fifth.
Jun 20, 2022
Two more hits Monday
Torkelson went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in Monday's loss to the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
That's three straight multi-hit efforts for Torkelson, which has pushed his season batting average from .178 up to .198. It's still a rough number overall for the rookie, but fantasy managers are at least seeing signs that the 2020 No. 1 overall pick is starting to figure things out at the plate. Torkelson's fantasy stock should continue to climb as he gains confidence at the MLB level.
Jun 20, 2022
Drives in two Sunday
Torkelson went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI in Sunday's win over the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
That's consecutive two-hit games for Torkelson, who may finally be starting to break out. The rookie is still batting just .190 with a 26.5 percent strikeout rate, so it will take a little while for his overall stat line to look a little better. With the Tigers sitting at 26-40, Torkelson along with fellow top rookie Riley Greene should see plenty of playing time in a rebuilding campaign. Both players have the talent to post nice fantasy numbers the rest of the way, though growing pains are likely.
Jun 19, 2022
Scores twice in win
Torkelson went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in Saturday's win over the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Both of Torkelson's runs came on Willi Castro hits, one in the fourth and one in the fifth. His two hits in Saturday's game give him just six in 15 June games. This has been a rough rookie year for Torkelson who is batting .184 on the season and is slashing just .122/.173/.163 in June.
Jun 13, 2022
Sitting Tuesday
Torkelson will not be in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the White Sox, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson is in the midst of a 3-for-38 slump at the plate over his last 12 games, so he'll get Tuesday off to hit the reset button. "It's easy to pile on a guy when he has a bad night and I don't want to do that," said skipper A.J. Hinch. "But we're aware he's not performing quite to the level he's going to or that he has."
Jun 5, 2022
Hitting second Sunday
Torkelson is batting second Sunday against the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
He hasn't hit higher than fifth in the lineup over the past month, so this would be a nice development if it sticks. Torkelson is hitting .226/.314/.290 over his last 10 games, so he hasn't necessarily earned a bump up the lineup. Unless his production picks up, he will likely be back hitting in the middle or bottom third of the lineup once Austin Meadows and Robbie Grossman return from injuries.
Jun 4, 2022
Not starting Saturday
Torkelson isn't in the lineup Saturday against the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson will get a breather after he went just 1-for-13 with a walk and four strikeouts over the last four games. Harold Castro is starting at first base and batting third.
May 30, 2022
Tallies three hits Monday
Torkelson went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in Monday's win over the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson had been hitless across his past three games, but he snapped out of the funk in a big way Monday. The three-hit effort was the first of the 22-year-old's MLB career, and it was just his seventh multi-hit game of the season through 42 games. It's mostly been a struggle for Torkelson, who's batting just .194 overall, but the talent is there for a breakout to come at any point.
May 28, 2022
Not in Saturday's lineup
Torkelson isn't starting Saturday's game against the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson was initially slated to get a day off Friday before the game was postponed, and he'll ultimately be out of the lineup Saturday. Harold Castro will take over at first base and bat fifth.
May 27, 2022
On bench Friday
Torkelson will sit Friday against the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
It's been a disappointing rookie season thus far for Torkelson, who's hitting .179/.292/.309 with four homers and a 28.5 percent strikeout rate through four games. He'll head to the bench after going hitless in his last two games, with Harold Castro taking over at first base.
May 21, 2022
Drives in lone run Friday
Torkelson went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI in Friday's 6-1 loss to the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
For the second straight game, the Tigers scored just one run, and in both of those contests, Torkelson provided the offense. On Wednesday, he blasted a solo home run, while on Friday it was a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. Despite Detroit's struggles overall, the rookie is starting to show some signs of life. Over his past six games, Torkelson is slashing .353/.368/.647 with a home run and three RBI. That looks a lot better than his .179/.290/.321 line overall.
May 18, 2022
Provides offense Wednesday
Torkelson went 2-for-3 with a double and a solo home run in Wednesday's 6-1 loss to the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson was the only Detroit player with multiple hits and the only one to cross the plate. The rookie is still batting just .173, but at least he's continuing to see regular playing time, as the 13-25 Tigers look to be in a rebuilding campaign. As long as Torkelson stays in the lineup most days, fantasy managers should keep an eye on him, as the talent is there for a breakout at any point.
May 16, 2022
Heads to bench
Torkelson will sit Monday against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson has struggled significantly at the plate in recent weeks, going hitless in 11 of his last 13 games. He'll get the day off to clear his head Monday, with Harold Castro starting at first base.
May 14, 2022
Collects two hits, RBI in win
Torkelson went 2-for-3 with an RBI in Friday's win over the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
It's been a tough rookie campaign for Torkelson, as he came into Friday's contest hitless in his previous five games, and he's only batting .163 overall. Strikeouts have been an issue, as he's whiffing 32 percent of the time. Torkelson has plenty of talent, so if he can start to cut down on the strikeouts, his production could start to trend upward.
May 10, 2022
On bench for Game 1 of twin bill
Torkelson is out of the lineup for the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Harold Castro will pick up a start at first base while Torkelson takes a seat in the midst of his 2-for-32 slump at the dish over his past 10 games. Expect Torkelson to re-enter the starting nine for the second half of the twin bill.
May 8, 2022
Struggles continue Sunday
Torkelson, who went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts in Sunday's loss to the Astros, has just three hits in his last 10 games.
ANALYSIS
In this cold stretch, Torkelson has gone just 3-for-32 with 14 strikeouts, and his season batting average has dipped to .167. The Tigers fell to 8-19 with Sunday's loss, so they'll likely keep playing the talented rookie regularly in what appears to be a rebuilding season. Fantasy managers may occasionally get some big games from Torkelson, but he's hard to trust at this point due to his inability to make consistent contact at the plate.
May 6, 2022
Resting Friday
Torkelson is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson sits for just the third time this season. He's in a bit of a slump, going 1-for-23 at the plate across his last seven games. Harold Castro will be the first baseman Friday.
May 1, 2022
Gets Sunday off
Torkelson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Harold Castro will draw the start at first base while Torkelson exits the lineup for the first time since April 11. The rookie's move to the bench comes after a rough four-game stretch in which he went 1-for-14 with a walk and seven strikeouts.
Apr 23, 2022
Homers in big win Saturday
Torkelson went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run and two runs scored in Saturday's win over the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson connected for his third home run of the season in the first inning with two runners on, helping lead the Tigers to an easy 13-0 win. The rookie got off to a slow start but is starting to get going, and his OPS is up to .849 for the season. He should continue to post solid numbers as he gets more comfortable with MLB pitching.
Apr 15, 2022
Game-winning home run
Torkelson went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in a 2-1 win Friday in Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson had two of the three Tiger hits off Brad Keller including a two-out, two-run blast in the seventh inning. It was the second round-tripper in the last three games for the top prospect. After going hitless in his first four major-league games, the 22-year-old is 5-for-13 with three extra-base hits in his last four contests. So far, he's hit seventh or eighth in every game of the season for Detroit.
Apr 13, 2022
Blasts first MLB home run
Torkelson went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's loss to the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
A day after collecting his first MLB hit, Torkelson recorded his first MLB home run and first two RBI. The .176 batting average still doesn't look great for the 22-year-old, but it seems like he's settling in after a sluggish start, so a hot streak could be on tap.
Apr 12, 2022
Collects first MLB hit
Torkelson went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Tuesday's loss to the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson can now take a deep breath, as he came into Tuesday's contest 0-for-10 with three walks and seven strikeouts to begin his MLB career. With the first hit now behind him, perhaps the 22-year-old can get going at the plate. The Tigers will likely keep giving Torkelson regular chances in an effort to further his development, and fantasy managers should remain patient because the talent is there.
Apr 11, 2022
Day off Monday
Torkelson will sit Monday against the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson has gone 0-for-8 with six strikeouts through his first three MLB games. He'll get a day to clear his head Monday, though it will take far more than three games for there to be reason to seriously worry about his playing time. Harold Castro will take over at first base.
Apr 8, 2022
Batting eighth in MLB debut
Torkelson is starting at first base and batting eighth in Friday's Opening Day matchup with the White Sox, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Detroit officially selected Torkelson's contract earlier this week, and he'll make his big-league debut near the bottom of the team's revamped lineup. The 22-year-old was promoted to Triple-A Toledo last season and didn't miss a beat, hitting .238/.350/.531 with 11 home runs and 27 RBI in 40 games, and he'll work as the Tigers' primary first baseman in his rookie campaign.
Apr 6, 2022
Contract officially selected
Torkelson's contract was selected by the Tigers on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The Tigers announced last weekend that Torkelson had made the Opening Day roster, and the move was made official Wednesday. The No. 1 overall pick from 2020 slashed .258/.385/.484 with a homer, four doubles, four runs, four RBI and a steal this spring, and he'll begin the year as Detroit's primary first baseman.
Apr 2, 2022
Makes Opening Day roster
Torkelson has made the Tigers' Opening Day roster, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Tigers seemed open to the idea of breaking camp with the 2020 first-overall pick on their roster, and that's now been officially confirmed by GM Al Avila. Torkelson cruised through the minors last season, hitting .267/.383/.552 with 30 homers in 121 games. He's continued to swing a hot bat this spring, posting an .846 OPS in 12 games while striking out just four times.
Mar 29, 2022
Seems to have GM's support
Detroit general manager Al Avila said he wants Torkelson to make the team out of spring training and help the Tigers push toward the playoffs, Jon Paul Morosi of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
"We want them to make the team," Avila said of Torkelson and fellow top prospect Riley Greene. "That would mean they've been successful and are in a position to help us make the playoffs this year." Avila added that service-time concerns won't factor into the decision, so if Torkelson looks ready, he figures to make the Opening Day roster. The 22-year-old is batting .286 through nine Grapefruit League games with an .851 OPS, so the performance has been there so far.
Mar 26, 2022
Closing in on roster spot?
Torkelson is batting eighth and playing first base in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies, and manager A.J. Hinch said it could be a preview of his Opening Day lineup, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Hinch said more needs to be decided in spring training, but Torkelson seems to be positioned to serve as Detroit's regular first baseman as soon as the season begins. This is obviously good news for fantasy managers, as the 22-year-old is an exciting prospect and should be able to post solid numbers in his debut campaign, though some growing pains are always likely for a rookie.
Mar 21, 2022
Looking good at first
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said he's been impressed with Torkelson's defense at first base, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
It appears that Torkelson won't be playing third base anymore and will focus entirely on first. So far, the results have been promising. "First base defense has always been overlooked until you see a good one, and then you see how that can impact an entire infield," Hinch said. While fantasy managers may prefer that Torkelson pick up additional eligibility, they won't complain if his strong play at first helps him make his MLB debut sooner rather than later. The 22-year-old has a decent chance to make the Opening Day roster, but even if he doesn't, he should still see plenty of action in the majors this season.
Mar 18, 2022
Doubles in spring debut
Torkelson went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson started at first base, which is where he's worked extensively so far in camp. The 22-year-old top prospect has a very real chance to make the Tigers' Opening Day roster. If that happens, Torkelson will likely be the primary first baseman, with Miguel Cabrera serving as the DH and Jonathan Schoop handling the keystone.
Mar 13, 2022
Working as primary 1B
Torkelson was the only infielder taking groundballs at first base for the Tigers on Sunday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
When asked how often he could play first base this season, Miguel Cabrera said, "I don't know, because we want Torkelson in the lineup. ... I'll take the DH." It's still uncertain whether Torkelson will be on the Opening Day roster, but it doesn't seem to be up for debate who the Tigers plan on getting the bulk of the work at first base this season. Jonathan Schoop would slide over to second base while also getting some starts at designated hitter.
Mar 12, 2022
Joins major
Torkelson was invited to major-league camp by the Tigers on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
The invitation is an expected one, as the 2020 first-overall pick is thought to have a chance to push for an Opening Day roster spot. He doesn't have much left to prove in the minors after hitting .267/.383/.552 with 30 homers in 121 games across the three highest levels of the minors last year, including 40 games with Triple-A Toledo. Even if he's held down to start the year in an effort to manipulate his service time, he's likely to join the big-league squad fairly early in the season.
Mar 11, 2022
Ready to push for MLB role
Torkelson said he's been seeing the ball well during spring drills, and the top prospect could push for an Opening Day roster spot, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 first-year player draft, made it all the way up to Triple-A in 2021, and he posted a solid .881 OPS across 40 games with Toledo. The Tigers will most likely get Torkelson a little more seasoning in the minors to begin the 2022 season, though the 22-year-old could force the issue if he gets off to a hot start.
Feb 8, 2022
Moves past ankle injury
Torkelson said Saturday in an interview with Evan Petzold of The Detroit Free Press that he's nearly recovered from the sprained ankle he sustained during the Arizona Fall League.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson's ankle injury resulted in an early end to his stint in the AFL, but he's since remained in the desert to rehab the ankle and take part in offseason workouts at his alma mater, Arizona State. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 first-year player draft looks like he still has a couple minor hurdles to clear in his recovery from the injury, but he's on pace to be a full participant in workouts when the Tigers begin spring training. Expect the slugging corner infielder to open the 2022 campaign at Triple-A Toledo, where he posted an .881 OPS and 13.5 percent walk rate over 177 plate appearances last season following his mid-August promotion from Double-A Erie.
Oct 22, 2021
Won't return to fall ball
Torkelson's sprained ankle will rule him out for the remainder of the Arizona Fall League, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2020 first-overall pick was one of the top players to watch in the Fall League after he hit .267/.383/.552 across the three highest levels of the minors in his first professional season, but his fall season was cut short after 29 plate appearances due to an ankle injury. Previous reports suggested he could be back before the end of the fall schedule, but he'll instead rest and prepare for spring training.
Aug 15, 2021
Promoted to Triple-A
Torkelson was promoted to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson went through a mild slump at Double-A Erie in late July and early August, but he bounced back across the last ween and hit .423 with four home runs, two doubles, nine RBI and eight runs across his last six games. He slashed .263/.373/.560 with 14 homers, 36 RBI, 33 runs and a stolen base in 50 games with the Double-A club and will now be one step away from the majors.
Aug 6, 2021
Struggling to string hits together
Torkelson's last 23 games in Double-A have seen him go 16-for-75 (.213) with four homers, 13 RBI, 13 runs and a 17:24 BB:K.
ANALYSIS
Even in the midst of this slump, which has driven his batting average for Erie down to .241, Torkelson's pop and plate discipline have been readily apparent, which is why he still has a .369 OBP and .511 slugging percentage. It's likely that the 2020 draft's No. 1 pick has just been getting unlucky, as he owns a .250 BABIP in Double-A play. He remains one of the game's top prospects, but that subpar batting average may offer an intriguing buy-low opportunity in dynasty formats.
Jul 9, 2021
Unfazed by Double-A
Torkelson is hitting .273/.380/.591 with six homers, 13 RBI and an 11:15 BB:K across 19 games since his promotion to Double-A Erie.
ANALYSIS
After putting up a 1.009 OPS in High-A to open the campaign, the 2020 No. 1 overall pick got pushed up to Double-A, and if the higher level of competition has bothered him, it's tough to notice. In fact, he's already hit more homers in these 19 games with Erie than he did in 31 games with High-A West Michigan. The 21-year-old has played both first and third base at both stops, and while Torkelson isn't known for his defense, the Tigers project to have openings at both positions next year. With his combination of high-end power and an excellent batting eye, Torkelson projects to be an All-Star bat at the major-league level, and it wouldn't be surprising if he makes a major impact as soon as he's called up next year.
Jun 13, 2021
Promoted to Double-A
Torkelson was promoted to Double-A Erie on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson moved past a hamstring issue at the beginning of June, and he's recorded multi-hit performances in six of his last seven games. In 30 appearances with High-A West Michigan, the 21-year-old slashed .311/.445/.566 with five home runs, 27 RBI and three stolen bases.
Jun 3, 2021
Moves past hamstring issue
Torkelson has appeared in four games for High-A West Michigan since suffering a hamstring injury May 23, going 5-for-16 with two home runs, two doubles, three walks, seven RBI and five runs.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson has returned with a bang from the sore left hamstring, which kept him out of the lineup for just under a week. The 22-year-old was touted for his plus power and plus hit tool coming out of Arizona State in 2020, but he had difficulty making consistent contact in the Grapefruit League this spring before he was assigned to High-A. Torkelson has assuaged some of those concerns so far during the regular season, as he's striking out at a manageable 22.9 percent clip through 96 plate appearances.
May 23, 2021
Managing hamstring tightness
Torkelson was removed from Sunday's game against High-A Wisconsin due to left hamstring tightness, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson went hitless in his lone at-bat Sunday, and he was replaced by a pinch hitter in the top of the third inning as a precautionary measure. Torkelson has hit .220 with a home run, 11 RBI and three stolen bases to begin the minor-league season.
May 3, 2021
Will play third in minors
Torkelson is set to play "a lot of third base" according to his manager at High-A West Michigan, Patrick Nothaft of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson primarily played first base during his college career at Arizona State, but the Tigers got him some time at third during spring training, and now it looks like that's the plan for him in the minors. The 2020 No. 1 overall pick will largely be judged by his bat during his professional career, but he'll of course need to hold his own defensively as well. If Torkelson shows some ability at both corner infield spots, it could ultimately help him advance to the majors sooner, though he's still probably a year or two away at this point.
Mar 30, 2021
Likely to open at High-A
Tigers general manager Al Avila said Tuesday that Torkelson will likely open the season at High-A West Michigan, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 first-year player draft still has yet to make his professional regular-season debut, but he was able to get some work in at the Tigers' big-league camp this spring. The early returns weren't impressive -- he went 1-for-26 with 16 strikeouts in Grapefruit League play -- but dynasty managers shouldn't fret too much about the 21-year-old's long-term outlook. Torkelson is still viewed as an impact power hitter who should provide a high batting average to go along with his slugging production.
Mar 20, 2021
Headed to minor-league camp
Torkelson was reassigned to minor-league camp Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson saw plenty of playing time this spring while working with the major-league coaching staff but went just 1-for-20 with one run, three walks and 12 strikeouts during Grapefruit League games. The Tigers' top prospect will now join the team's minor-league camp before he likely begins the season at High-A West Michigan.

Will keep playing regularly
Detroit manager A.J. Hinch said Torkelson will continue to play regularly in Grapefruit League games despite his struggles at the plate, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson, the No. 1 pick of the 2020 draft, is 0-for-15 this spring with nine strikeouts. "We're gonna keep rolling him out there and getting him some experience," Hinch said. "He wants to make a big impression, and it feels like it's piling up on him, but we still think he's a pretty good player." Torkelson could begin the season at High-A West Michigan, and he has the talent and pedigree to turn things around in a hurry and start piling up hits.

Hitless this spring
Torkelson went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Through seven games this spring, Torkelson is 0-for-13 with eight strikeouts. There will be better days ahead for the uber-talented 21-year-old, but he clearly needs a little seasoning in the minors. Torkelson could begin the season at High-A West Michigan and potentially move up the ladder fairly quickly if he performs well.

Cleared for game action
Tigers manager AJ Hinch said Torkelson (finger) has been cleared for game action, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Torkelson didn't make the trip with the Tigers to Tampa for Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees, but he'll be included on the travel roster in Bradenton for Tuesday's five-inning game versus the Pirates. Even if he doesn't start in that contest, the touted prospect should have a good chance at getting an at-bat or two off the bench.

Doing drills at first
Torkelson (finger) has been taking groundballs at first base the past few days at camp, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager A.J. Hinch previously said Torkelson will focus exclusively on third base during spring training, but the 21-year-old isn't throwing right now due to his finger injury, so it appears the work at first is more by necessity. Torkelson won't play in Sunday's Grapefruit League opener against the Phillies, though the team has described his injury as "very mild," so he should see game action soon.

Sidelined with finger injury
Tigers manager AJ Hinch said that Torkelson won't play in Sunday's Grapefruit League opener versus the Phillies and will be limited in workouts for the next few days after slicing his right index finger at his rental home in Lakeland, Fla. on Wednesday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 first-year player draft required stitches to seal the wound, which Hinch described as "very mild." The injury doesn't appear to be anything that will jeopardize Torkelson's availability for the start of the minor-league season, but those hoping to get a glimpse of the power-hitting corner infielder in his first professional game action may have to wait until late next week.

Being developed as third baseman
Tigers manager AJ Hinch said Monday that Torkelson will work exclusively at third base during spring training, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Though significant questions remain as to whether Torkelson has enough range to stick at the hot corner long term, the Tigers will at least give the 2020 No. 1 overall pick the chance to prove he can play the position as he begins his professional career. Torkelson is already close to big-league ready at the plate, and he'll retain plenty of appeal in dynasty formats even if he's ultimately forced to move to first base.

Gets camp invite
Torkelson was invited to Detroit's major-league spring training camp Saturday.
ANALYSIS
The 2020 first-overall pick is both very talented and very advanced, though he probably won't be given serious consideration for an Opening Day roster spot, as the canceled minor-league season last year robbed him of the chance to make his professional debut. While his defensive home remains uncertain, his bat is strong enough that he could debut as soon as this summer despite his inexperience.

Won't debut in 2020
General manager Al Avila implied that Torkelson will not make his big-league debut in 2020, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
This isn't all too surprising, as the Tigers have no reason to rush their 2020 No. 1 overall pick to the majors. In the meantime, he'll continue his development at the team's alternate camp site.

Reassigned to Toledo
Torkelson was reassigned to the Tigers' alternate training site Monday.
ANALYSIS
No big surprise here, as the Tigers weren't going to rush their 2020 No. 1 overall pick to the majors, even if his bat might be ready. Torkelson will now get to continue his development with other prospects and settle in as a professional.
