Lands on open market
Hill (finger) was non-tendered by the Padres on Friday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Hill required surgery in late September to repair ligaments and clean up scar tissue in his left ring finger, though he is expected to be ready for the start of spring training in 2024. The 33-year-old lefty reliever should be able to find a new home in free agency.

Moved to 60-day IL
Hill (finger) was transferred Friday from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.
ANALYSIS
Hill underwent season-ending surgery Wednesday to repair ligaments and clean up scar tissue in his left ring finger. This is a procedural move to clear out a 40-man roster spot for Jose Espada, who is joining the Padres' bullpen Friday.

Undergoes finger surgery
Hill underwent surgery Wednesday to repair ligaments and clean up scar tissue in his left ring finger, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Hill's season is officially over, but the left-hander will begin a throwing program in 6-to-8 weeks and is expected to be ready to roll for spring training. The reliever's performance took a step back in 2023, as he held a 5.48 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 26:14 K:BB over 44.1 innings. It's possible the finger issue might have been at least partly to blame for his struggles.

Shelved with sprained finger
The Padres placed Hill on the 15-day injured list Monday with a sprained left ring finger.
ANALYSIS
San Diego placed Hill on the IL with the same injury on Aug. 2 prior to activating him when the roster expanded from 26 to 28 on Sept. 1, but the veteran southpaw made just three appearances out of the bullpen before suffering an apparent setback. The Padres selected the contract of right-hander Nick Hernandez from Triple-A El Paso to fill Hill's spot in the bullpen.

Reinstated from IL
The Padres reinstated Hill (finger) from the 15-day injured list Friday.
ANALYSIS
A sprained left ring finger sent Hill to the injured list in early August. Hill looked shaky during his first rehab appearance with five earned runs in two-thirds of an inning at Single-A, but managed to regroup and throw a scoreless frame in Triple-A on Wednesday. He'll return to the Padres' bullpen as a depth piece for the final month of the season.

Kicks off rehab assignment
Hill (finger) started a minor-league rehab assignment with Single-A Lake Elsinore on Friday, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and no walks while striking out one batter over two-thirds of an inning.
ANALYSIS
Hill has been on the injured list since Aug. 2 due to a sprained left ring finger. The southpaw looked very rusty in getting lit up in his first rehab outing Friday, and he'll likely need at least another appearance before he's ready to return to the Padres, though his stay in the minors isn't expected to be an extended one, per MLB.com. Hill had been going through a rough patch with San Diego prior to getting hurt, posting a 7.30 ERA, 2.27 WHIP and 5:6 K:BB over 12.1 innings across his previous 14 outings.
Aug 22, 2023
Throwing simulated game
Hill (finger) will throwing a simulated game Tuesday, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Assuming he gets out of the session with no complications, Hill should be cleared to resume a rehab assignment. The left-handed reliever won't require too many rehab appearances before being activated, so a late-August return is on the table.
Aug 2, 2023
Shut down with sprained finger
The Padres placed Hill on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a sprained left ring finger.
ANALYSIS
Hill presumably picked up the injury during his relief appearance in Tuesday, when he retired one batter while giving up one run on one hit and one walk in a win over the Rockies. The Padres called up Ray Kerr from Triple-A El Paso to give the team another left-handed option in the bullpen while Hill is on the mend.
Mar 29, 2023
Effective this spring
Hill tossed 8.2 innings in Cactus League play, allowing three runs on six hits while posting an 11:3 K:BB.
ANALYSIS
Despite his results this spring, Hill has never been much of a strikeout pitcher, and he posted a career-worst 4.7 K/9 last season. The southpaw is locked into a role in the Padres' bullpen, however, and he'll open the campaign as the team's lone lefty reliever not named Josh Hader since Drew Pomeranz (elbow) and Jose Castillo (shoulder) are expected to begin the season on the injured list.

Receives $1.85 million from Padres
Hill signed a one-year, $1.85 million contract with the Padres on Friday to avoid arbitration, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Hill posted a 3.56 ERA in 2022 but managed just 25 strikeouts over 48 innings and missed some time with a shoulder problem. It's possible the heavy usage over the years just caught up to him, but the Padres will hope he can return to form in 2023.

Notches win Tuesday
Hill (3-0) earned the win over San Francisco on Tuesday by striking out the only batter he faced.
ANALYSIS
The Padres summoned newly acquired closer Josh Hader in the ninth inning to protect a three-run lead, but he melted down and allowed three runs to score. Hill entered with the go-ahead run at second base and struck out Joc Pederson to keep the game tied, and the reliever picked up the victory when Manny Machado launched a walkoff homer in the bottom of the frame. Hill hasn't allowed an earned run in 14 straight starts, though he's notched only six strikeouts over 12.2 innings during that stretch.

Picks up sixth hold Saturday
Hill earned a hold against Arizona on Saturday, allowing two hits and no walks in one scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
Hill was called upon in the eighth inning as the bridge to closer Taylor Rogers with San Diego nursing a one-run lead. He made things interesting by giving up consecutive one-out singles, but the southpaw was able to get out of danger by inducing an inning-ending double play. Hill picked up five holds across his first 10 outings of the season, but this was his first since May 23 -- a span of 19 games. His strikeout rate has been cut exactly in half to 11.0 percent after he posted a 22.0 percent rate in 2021, and he's posted a 4.15 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over 26 innings overall this season.

Notches second win
Hill (2-0) earned the win over Arizona on Tuesday by retiring one batter.
ANALYSIS
The game went into extra innings, and Hill was brought in with two outs and two runners on base in the top of the 11th. He began his outing by hitting Josh Rojas with a pitch but got out of the bases-loaded situation by inducing a fielder's-choice groundout. Hill was then credited with the win when San Diego walked off with a victory in the bottom of the frame. The lefty reliever has pitched four straight scoreless outings and has collected five holds along with his pair of wins on the season.

Earns win Sunday
Hill (1-0) was credited with the win against Milwaukee on Sunday as a result of pitching 1.1 scoreless innings. He allowed one hit and struck out one batter.
ANALYSIS
The game was tied 3-3 when Hill entered in the eighth inning, but Milwaukee had had the bases loaded with two outs. Hill retired Jace Peterson to end the threat, then remained in the game for the ninth frame and set down three straight batters following a leadoff single. Hill earned his first win of the campaign when San Diego pulled ahead in the 10th. The left-hander has notched five holds this season while compiling a 5.40 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 5:3 K:BB across 11.2 innings.

Reinstated from injured list
Hill (shoulder) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Friday.
ANALYSIS
Hill had been sidelined since early May due to shoulder inflammation, but he's been cleared to rejoin the major-league bullpen without a rehab assignment. Over his five appearances prior to his absence, the southpaw allowed seven runs while striking out one in three innings.
May 7, 2022
Out with shoulder inflammation
Hill landed on the 10-day injured list Saturday due to shoulder inflammation, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hill has struggled to start the season, striking out just one batter in 5.2 innings while giving up seven runs on 11 hits. He'll now miss potentially an extended period, though the team hasn't specified exactly when he's expected back. Ray Kerr was recalled to give the Padres another lefty in the bullpen in Hill's absence.
May 2, 2022
Collects third hold
Hill earned a hold against Pittsburgh on Sunday with a perfect eighth inning.
ANALYSIS
The Padres held a 3-1 lead when Hill came on in the eighth, but the Pirates had loaded the bases with no outs against Robert Suarez. Hill yielded a sacrifice fly to the first batter he faced but kept the damage to a minimum by subsequently inducing a double play. The lefty reliever has posted an unappealing 7.20 ERA on the season due to a pair of rough outings, but he has held opponents scoreless in six of his eight appearances overall.

Yields only Arizona hits Friday
Hill tossed two-thirds of an inning against the Diamondbacks on Friday, allowing two hits but no runs.
ANALYSIS
For the second straight game, Hill was brought into the contest after a Padres starter held Arizona scoreless. In both instances, the southpaw coughed up the combined no-hitter by yielding a single to the first batter he faced. Further, Hill ended both outings having surrendered a pair of hits but has yet to be charged with any runs. As one of only two left-handers currently in San Diego's bullpen (closer Taylor Rogers is the other), Hill figures to see plenty of action again this season after getting into a career-high 78 contests in 2021.
Nov 30, 2021
Returning to Padres
Hill signed a one-year, $1.325 million contract with the Padres on Tuesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 31-year-old will return to the Padres for a third consecutive season after pitching in 78 games with the squad in 2021. He tossed 59.2 innings while compiling a 3.62 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and striking out 56 batters. Hill's 17 holds were the second-highest on the team and he will remain a set-up option for the Padres next season.
Aug 4, 2021
Stuck with extra-inning loss
Hill (5-6) allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits without recording an out while taking the loss Wednesday versus Oakland.
ANALYSIS
San Diego was able to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the 10th inning, but Hill gave it away on a walkoff two-run double by Matt Olson. The 31-year-old southpaw has taken a pair of losses and blown saves each in his last five outings. He's still been fairly reliable with a 2.85 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 47:16 K:BB across 41 innings this season while collecting 13 holds and one save in 53 appearances.
Jul 25, 2021
Tagged with relief loss
Hill (5-5) was tagged with the loss Saturday against the Marlins after allowing two runs on three hits and a walk while fanning one across two-thirds of an inning.
ANALYSIS
Hill pitched the seventh inning but couldn't complete the entire frame, as he gave up two runs that would be decisive for the outcome of the contest following a two-run single from Jesus Aguilar. This outing ended Hill's run of six straight scoreless appearances, though he only covered 3.1 innings over that span.
Jul 23, 2021
Notches 13th hold
Hill earned a hold Thursday versus Miami by retiring the only batter he faced.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw was brought in to face lefty Magneuris Sierra with two outs in the eighth inning and made quick work of the pinch hitter, getting Sierra to ground out on the first pitch. The outing was Hill's sixth straight without allowing a run or a hit, though he has covered only 3.1 innings over that span. On the season, he has posted a 2.37 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, one save and 13 holds.
Jul 6, 2021
Stuck with loss Monday
Hill (5-4) took the loss Monday against the Nationals after allowing mone run on one hit while striking out a batter over an inning.
ANALYSIS
Hil entered to begin the seventh trying to hold a 5-5 tie and was unable to do so. Josh Bell took him yard on the first pitch he saw to put the Nationals back out in front 6-5 and they never looked back. The long ball was the first Hill's given up since May 31. He now sits at a 2.65 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 37:12 K:BB over 34 innings.
Jun 30, 2021
Gets untraditional save
Hill allowed one hit in a scoreless fifth inning was credited with a save Wednesday against the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Hill pitched the fifth inning with a two-run lead after Joe Musgrove was pulled. He was the last pitcher to throw for the Padres, which allowed him to earn an untraditional save when the game was eventually called due to rain. Hill has been a steady option out of the team's bullpen this season -- he's maintained a 2.48 ERA and racked up 36 strikeouts across 32.2 innings -- but Mark Melancon should remain in line to see save opportunities in normal circumstances going forward.
Jun 27, 2021
Credited with win
Hill (5-3) allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits and one walk across one inning to earn the win over Arizona on Sunday.
ANALYSIS

Hill has hung a goose egg in 11 of his past 12 outings and has registered a 2.35 ERA and 1.17 WHIP overall this season. He hasn't picked up any saves or holds but does have four wins in relief while racking up a 36:11 K:BB across 30.2 frames.

Takes loss in relief
Hill (3-3) was tagged with the loss in relief Tuesday against the Rockies after allowing two runs on three hits across one-third of an inning. He didn't record a strikeout and didn't issue a walk.
ANALYSIS
Hill entered this game in a run of six straight scoreless outings, but he didn't look comfortable in this one and was deservedly tagged with the loss. The left-hander saw his ERA rise from 2.03 to 2.67 as a result of this outing, but he still owns a strong 33:10 K:BB across 27 innings.
May 4, 2021

Hill (2-2) won Monday's 2-0 victory over Pittsburgh, striking out one in a clean seventh.
ANALYSIS

May 1, 2021
Notches fifth hold
Hill was credited with a hold in Friday's win over San Francisco as a result of striking out both batters he faced in the seventh inning.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw certainly earned the hold after inheriting a one-out, bases-loaded situation and proceeding to strike out both Darin Ruf and Mike Tauchman. Hill has allowed only two earned runs over 12.2 frames this season while registering an impressive 17:4 K:BB.
Apr 26, 2021

Hill (1-2) pitched a scoreless 10th inning, allowing two walks while striking out two to earn the win Sunday over the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Hill was called upon in the 10th inning to keep the game tied. Both of his walks were intentional to load the bases with the pitching spot due up, where he struck out pinch hitter Clayton Kershaw for the second out. He then struck out DJ Peters for the final out of the inning. The 31-year-old has made 13 appearances out of the bullpen and has only allowed runs in one of them, allowing three runs to the Dodgers on April 16.
Apr 17, 2021
Suffers loss Friday
Hill (0-2) took the loss against the Dodgers on Friday, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits while striking out one across 1.1 innings.

The left-hander has given up three home runs across 7.2 innings on the season, though he has posted a strong 10:1 K:BB.
Mar 8, 2021
Impressing in spring play
Hill has pitched two innings thus far this spring, allowing no runs on two hits and one walk while striking out six.
ANALYSIS
Hill has improved his K/9 during each of his three big-league campaigns, starting at 8.3 in 2018 and building to 10.0 last season. The southpaw doesn't throw hard -- his fastball velocity averages just over 90 mph -- but he gets enough strikeouts and induces enough groundballs to be viewed as a valuable bullpen piece for the upstart Padres.
Sep 13, 2020
Collects win in relief
Hill (3-0) pitched two-thirds of an inning and didn't allow a baserunner to earn the win in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader versus the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Hill relieved starter Garrett Richards and got the last two outs of the fifth inning to keep the game tied at one. The Padres' scored twice in the bottom half of the inning, and that made Hill the pitcher of record. Through 12.1 innings this season, the southpaw has a 3.65 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 14 strikeouts across 17 appearances. He's collected three holds but isn't likely to challenge Trevor Rosenthal for save chances.
Jul 16, 2020
Dealt to Padres
Hill was traded to the Padres for Franchy Cordero and Ronald Cordero on Thursday, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hill will provide immediate bullpen depth to a Padres team that finished with a combined 4.59 ERA from their relief pitchers in 2019. The 30-year-old southpaw was excellent against left-handed hitters last season, allowing a .186 batting average without surrendering a single home run. Hill's dominance against left-handed hitters sets up nicely against a Dodgers lineup that feasts on right-handed pitching.
