Edman, who led off in Sunday's Grapefruit League opener against the Nationals, has the skill set to potentially handle the role on a regular basis during the season, Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports.

The versatile Edman is a switch hitter who possesses excellent speed and had 19- and 27-stolen-base tallies during two stops in his minor-league career. Edman also regularly posted contact rates above 80.0 percent before making his big-league debut in 2019, and he's generated figures of 81.3 percent and 76.5 percent in his first two seasons in the majors. Working out of the top of the order Sunday, Edman singled and scored on a wild pitch in the first inning and is likely to get consistent opportunities in the leadoff role during Grapefruit League games.

Edman is still projected to serve as the Cardinals' primary second baseman this coming season but is prepared to put in time at other positions as well if necessary, Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Edman has been a true jack of all trades for the Cardinals over his first two seasons, logging 37 appearances at second base, 86 at third base, 13 at shortstop and 34 in the outfield, the majority in right field. Edman's diligent work comes in anticipation of a robust role during a 2020 campaign that should see him log time at multiple positions for a second straight season.

The versatile 24-year-old is set for plenty of playing time at various positions whenever the 2020 season does kick off, and he received plenty of opportunities to tune up before play was paused. Edman proved to be a legitimate multi-category fantasy asset during his first taste of the big leagues in 2019 by displaying above-average pop (35 extra-base hits) and speed (15 stolen bases in 16 attempts) while also boasting a modest strikeout rate (17.5 percent). Edman could see time at up to five different positions again in the coming campaign, with his role potentially set to be further fleshed out in any ramp-up period to the regular season.

Edman's likelihood of receiving ample playing time in both the infield and outfield increased with the release of Yairo Munoz on March 7, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Coming into spring training, Edman was already set to see plenty of action in 2020 after having logged time at second base, third base, shortstop and center field last season. The 24-year-old was highly productive at the plate as well with a .304/.350/.500 line across 92 games, and he was hitting .237 (9-for-38) with a double, a home run, six RBI, two walks, one stolen base and eight runs across 12 Grapefruit League games before spring training was paused.

Edman is expected to see action at as many as six different positions in spring training, as the Cardinals envision him filling a super-utility role in 2020, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

St. Louis is eager to open up everyday playing time for Edman after he posted a team-best .850 OPS last season following his promotion from Triple-A Memphis in early June. After playing 55 games at third base and 29 games at second base as a rookie, Edman should already carry dual-position eligibility in most fantasy leagues entering 2020, and the Cardinals could work him into the mix at all three outfield spots as necessary. Any additional eligibility he gains as the season rolls along will only provide another boost to the ascending value of Edman, who could make a run at a 20-20 season if he gets 600-plus plate appearances.
