Swipes two bags Tuesday
Benson went 0-for-3 with two stolen bases in Tuesday's 11-7 win over the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
While his activity on the basepaths didn't lead to any runs for the Reds, Benson still managed to contribute some fantasy value. The 25-year-old outfielder is stumbling to the finish line on the regular season, batting .160 (4-for-25) over 11 games since his last multi-hit performance, but he's still had something of a breakout in 2023 with 11 homers, 17 steals and an .847 OPS in 316 plate appearances, primarily in a strong-side platoon role.

Sep 13, 2023
Sitting out against southpaw
Benson is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers.
ANALYSIS

Sep 12, 2023
On bench versus lefty
Benson is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
Benson went 3-for-4 with a homer and a double in Sunday's series finale against the Cardinals, but he'll ride the pine in Tuesday's series opener at Detroit with left-hander Joey Wentz on the bump. Benson, 25, has batted just .152/.222/.212 in 36 plate appearances versus lefties this year.

The 25-year-old has put together a nice season during his first year in Cincinnati, slashing .273/.369/.502 with 10 homers, 27 RBI, 45 runs and a 37:89 BB:K in 287 plate appearances.

Sep 1, 2023
Sitting out first game
Benson is not in the lineup for the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Southpaw Jordan Wicks is on the hill for the Cubs, so Benson will take a seat. Newcomer Hunter Renfroe is in right field for the Reds.
Aug 28, 2023
Will not start Monday
Benson is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Giants.

Blasts grand slam in loss
Benson went 1-for-3 with a grand slam and a walk in Friday's 10-8 loss to the Diamondbacks.

During the 22-game power drought, he hit .250 with just one RBI, six extra-base hits and four stolen bases. The outfielder is up to eight long balls, 24 RBI, 39 runs scored, 14 thefts and a .278/.379/.502 slash line over 243 plate appearances this season.

The outfielder is at a .281/.381/.498 slash line with 14 thefts, seven home runs, 20 RBI and 38 runs scored across 76 contests this season. Benson has a clear path to playing time in right field with Jake Fraley (toe) and Stuart Fairchild (concussion) out, though Fraley could be back in early September, at which point Benson would likely move to left field.
Aug 20, 2023
Idle versus lefty
Benson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
The lefty-hitting Benson will take a seat for the series finale while Toronto brings southpaw Hyun Jin Ryu to the hill. With Benson on the bench, Spencer Steer will pick up a start in left while TJ Friedl and Stuart Fairchild round out the Cincinnati outfield.
Aug 15, 2023
Gets day off versus lefty
Benson is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Benson will join fellow lefty hitter Joey Votto on the bench Tuesday while the Guardians bring southpaw Logan Allen to the hill. Though he's coming off a productive weekend in Pittsburgh in which he went 5-for-9 with two walks, four runs and a stolen base, Benson will cede his spot in the outfield to TJ Hopkins in the series opener with Cleveland.
Aug 14, 2023

Aug 11, 2023
Returns to lineup
Benson (back) is starting in right field and batting eight Friday against the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Back stiffness kept Benson out of the Reds' last game against the Marlins, but he will return to the lineup after getting an extra day to recover Thursday. The 25-year-old outfielder is currently 2-for-14 with nine strikeouts and a run scored since the beginning of August.
Aug 9, 2023
Nursing back stiffness
Benson is not in the Reds' lineup Wednesday due to back stiffness, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
It explains why he's not playing for a second straight day and this time against a right-hander. Benson is expected to be fine, so there would seem to be a good chance he's ready to roll for the weekend series in Pittsburgh following Thursday's off day.
Aug 9, 2023
Absent from lineup
Benson is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Benson didn't start Tuesday against a lefty and is now on the bench for this one versus right-hander Johnny Cueto. Spencer Steer and Stuart Fairchild will handle the corner outfield spots for the Reds on Wednesday.
Aug 8, 2023
On bench versus lefty
Benson is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS

Aug 4, 2023
Sits down Friday
Benson isn't in the Reds' lineup Friday against the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
After going 4-for-11 with an RBI and a run scored during Cincinnati's last series against the Cubs, Benson will catch a breather to begin the weekend series. Spencer Steer, Stuart Fairchild and Nick Senzel will man the Reds' outfield from left to right Friday.
Jul 29, 2023
Out of Saturday's lineup
Benson is not in Saturday's lineup against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
He will get a rare day off against a righty (Emmet Sheehan), which allows Spencer Steer to move to left field and for Joey Votto and Christian Encarnacion-Strand to handle the first base and designated hitter duties, respectively. Benson is hitting .241 with three home runs, two steals and 16 strikeouts (47.1 K%) in his last 10 games.
Jul 26, 2023
Cracks third homer since break
Benson went 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run home run in Tuesday's 4-3 win over Milwaukee.
ANALYSIS
Benson's home run in the top of the ninth inning gave the Reds two insurance runs, which team needed, as the bullpen gave up three runs in the bottom half of the frame. The home run on the seventh for Benson with three of those long balls coming in the last seven games.
Jul 25, 2023
Reaches double-digit steals
Benson went 1-for-3 with a stolen base in Monday's 3-2 loss to the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Benson returned to the lineup after getting a day off and stole his 10th base of the season. The outfielder has swiped three in the last nine games. Benson regularly reached double-digit thefts in the minors and has a combined 21 steals between Cincinnati and Triple-A Louisville in 2023.
Jul 23, 2023
Gets Sunday off
Benson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Benson will take a seat for the first time since July 9, breaking a streak of nine consecutive starts. Even with the recent arrival of power-hitting prospect Christian Encarnacion-Strand in the big leagues, Benson doesn't look as though he'll lose out on his everyday role in the outfield. Since June 1, Benson owns a 179 wRC+, placing him sixth among all hitters in the majors with at least 100 plate appearances during that time.
Jul 21, 2023
Involved in win
Benson went 2-for-3 with a walk, two doubles, an RBI and a stolen base in Thursday's 5-1 win over San Francisco.
ANALYSIS
Benson walked ahead of Luke Maile's two-run home run in the third then doubled in a run and scored an inning later. His sixth-inning stolen base did not impact the game, but it was the outfielder's ninth of the season and fifth in the last 17 games. Benson has been prominent in the last contests for the Reds, going 4-for-10 with two doubles, two home runs and six RBI.
Jul 20, 2023
Powers Reds to victory
Benson went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run Wednesday in a 3-2 win against San Francisco.
ANALYSIS
Batting out of the ninth spot in the order, Benson provided all three runs for the Reds in the contest with his 409-foot shot to left-center field in the third inning. It was the second straight game with a long ball for the outfielder, who went deep just four times over his first 48 contests. Benson has grown into a larger role for the Reds since the start of June, and he's earned it by slashing .323/.437/.606 with six homers, 15 RBI, 19 runs, eight steals and a 20:27 BB:K over 36 games during that span.
Jul 16, 2023
Records steal in loss
Benson went 0-for-1 with two walks and a stolen base in Saturday's 3-0 loss to the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
With one out in the bottom of the third inning, Benson walked and stole second base but remained in place as Luke Maile and TJ Friedl went down on strikes. The theft was the eighth of the season for Benson, who has routinely been a double-digit stealer in the minors. He was one of just two Reds to reach scoring position, as the Cincinnati offense has gone frigid. The Reds have been shutout in three straight games -- all against division foe Milwaukee -- with just seven hits (two doubles) while going 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position during the three-game run.
Jul 9, 2023
Heads to bench Sunday
Benson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Benson will take a seat Sunday with lefty Wade Miley pitching for Milwaukee. Spencer Steer will move out to left field while Joey Votto starts at first base.
Jul 9, 2023
Makes franchise history
Benson went 2-for-4 with a triple and a solo home run in Saturday's 8-5 win over Milwaukee.
ANALYSIS
Benson's third-inning home run marked the 22nd consecutive game the Reds hit at least one home run, which broke a 67-year-old franchise record. The team is 17-5 during the streak, which began when Cincinnati also started a 12-game winning streak that turned the season around. Benson's been part of that exciting turnaround, going 24-for-64 (.375) with four doubles, three triples, three home runs, eight RBI, 16 runs and as many walks (13) as strikeouts.
Jul 6, 2023
Double, stolen base in win
Benson went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's victory over the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Benson's been productive of late, going 10-for-26 (.385) with a .946 OPS over his last seven games. He's also added three stolen bases in that span, improving to 7-for-8 on attempts this season. The 25-year-old outfielder is now slashing a solid .287/.379/.454 with three homers, 18 runs scored and nine RBI through 124 plate appearances on the campaign.
Jun 29, 2023
Has productive day at the plate
Benson went 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, one RBI and three runs scored in Wednesday's win over the Orioles. He also stole a base.
ANALYSIS
Benson continued Cincinnati's offensive charge in the second inning, leading off with a double to open the frame before coming around to score on an infield single from TJ Friedl in the next at-bat. The left fielder collected three hits on the day, including an RBI triple in the top of the 10th to give the Reds an 8-7 lead, while also swiping a bag. With the three-hit performance Benson is now hitting .351 in June with three homers, seven RBI, 13 runs scored and five stolen bases.
Jun 26, 2023
Out against lefty
Benson isn't in the Reds' lineup Monday against the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Left-hander Cole Irvin will start on the bump for Baltimore, meaning Benson will remain in the dugout to begin Monday's game. Benson's last three starts came in left field, which will instead be covered by Spencer Steer.
Jun 24, 2023
Sitting out against lefty
Benson isn't in the Reds' lineup Saturday against Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Southpaw Jared Shuster will start on the mound Saturday for Atlanta, meaning the left-handed bat of Benson will remain in the dugout. Benson -- along with many other Reds players -- is swinging a hot bat currently, so it's still possible he comes off the bench for a pinch hit opportunity once Atlanta turns to its bullpen.
Jun 23, 2023
Day off Friday
Benson isn't in the Reds' lineup Friday against Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Benson has been extremely hot lately, slashing .333/.492/.533 with two homers and five RBI since the start of June. He'll get a breather Friday as Jake Fraley fills in as Cincy's right fielder, moving Tyler Stephenson into the DH role and Luke Maile in behind the plate while batting ninth.
Jun 21, 2023
Homers, scores twice in win
Benson went 1-for-2 with a solo homer, a walk and two runs scored in Tuesday's win over the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Benson provided the Reds with some insurance after sending a solo blast to center to make it an 8-2 ballgame in the sixth. The 25-year-old continues to improve at the plate. In his first stint with the Reds this year, he hit .040 with a .117 OPS and a 1:14 BB:K in 10 games. Since returning to the majors May 26, Benson is slashing .373/.492/.588 with two homers, five RBI, 12 runs, four steals and an eye-popping 12:7 BB:K in 63 plate appearances. He's been a massive part of the Reds' recent surge but has essentially been restricted to hitting against righties only, as he has just five plate appearances against lefties all year.
Jun 19, 2023
On bench against southpaw
Benson is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Though he's slashing a magnificent .341/.481/.488 with three extra-base hits and four stolen bases through his first 14 games of June, the lefty-hitting Benson will head to the bench for the series opener while southpaw Austin Gomber takes the bump for Colorado. Despite his recent success, Benson could soon see his opportunities to play versus right-handers take a hit too, given that the Reds have nearly all of their key position players healthy again with Joey Votto (shoulder/biceps) returning from the 60-day injured list Monday.
Jun 17, 2023
Reaches safely five times in win
Benson went 3-for-3 with two walks, one triple, two RBI and one run scored in Saturday's 10-3 win over the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Benson notched his third three-hit effort and second multi-walk game of the season. He's slashing .264/.354/.375 with one home run and four RBI across 27 games, and the athletic prospect continues to see regular playing time with Wil Myers (shoulder) and Jake Fraley (wrist) on the injured list and Stuart Fairchild battling neck stiffness. However, Fraley and Myers could be returning soon, so despite his prolific outing Saturday, Benson may be headed back to Triple-A as a result.
Jun 16, 2023
Enters lineup Friday
Benson will start in right field and bat sixth Friday versus Houston, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Benson was initially set to sit Friday, but he will enter the lineup and replace Stuart Fairchild (neck) in the outfield. Benson has produced at least one hit in seven out of his last 10 games, batting .333 with a homer, a double, two RBI and three runs scored over that stretch.
Jun 14, 2023
Breather Wednesday
Benson is not in the starting lineup Wednesday versus the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Benson will head to the bench after he went 1-for-5 with a double, a walk and a run scored over the first two games of the series with Kansas City. T.J. Hopkins will replace him in right field and bat eighth in the series finale Wednesday.
Jun 11, 2023
Tallies three hits
Benson went 3-for-4 in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Benson has been productive with more playing time in June, going 9-for-28 (.321) over nine contests this month. All three of his hits were singles Sunday, and he wasn't able to provide a run-scoring play -- he has just two RBI and two runs scored in June. The outfielder is at a .230/.288/.311 slash line with a home run, three steals, two RBI and six runs scored over 66 plate appearances. He should continue to see at least a strong-side platoon role in the outfield while Wil Myers (shoulder), Jake Fraley (wrist) and Nick Senzel (knee) are all sidelined.
Jun 8, 2023
Hits walk-off homer
Benson went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 8-6 win against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Benson came to the plate in the ninth inning with no homers over 105 big-league at-bats, but he got on the board in a big way with a two-run walk-off shot. The outfielder has displayed good power in the minors, but he's had trouble making contact as a big-leaguer, striking out in nearly one-third of his plate appearances. A glut of injuries in Cincinnati's outfield has provided Benson with an expanded opportunity to play lately, and he's gone 8-for-24 (.333 average) with three steals over his past eight contests.
Jun 7, 2023
Jumps to leadoff spot
Benson is up in the leadoff spot Wednesday against the Dodgers, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Benson was originally penciled into the seventh spot in the Reds' batting order, but he'll jump to the very top after Jake Fraley (wrist) got scratched. Benson, 24, has seen an uptick in playing time in recent weeks but holds a rough .174/.240/.217 overall slash line through 59 plate appearances with Cincinnati.
Jun 5, 2023
Gets fourth consecutive start
Benson will start in left field and bat eighth in Monday's game against the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Benson will pick up a fourth consecutive start and appears to have moved ahead of Stuart Fairchild in the pecking order in the Cincinnati outfield behind Jake Fraley and Nick Senzel. The Reds currently have three outfielders residing on the injured list (TJ Friedl, Wil Myers and Henry Ramos), so Benson could end up losing out on steady playing time as soon as one of those three players are activated. Benson provided a lift for fantasy managers during the first three games of the series with Milwaukee, as he went 2-for-9 with three walks and three steals during those contests.
May 26, 2023
Returns from Triple-A
Benson was recalled from Triple-A Louisville by the Reds on Friday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Benson has gone just 1-for-25 with 14 strikeouts at the big-league level this season. He could see a little playing time against right-handed pitching.
May 23, 2023
Optioned back to Triple-A
Cincinnati optioned Benson to Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
TJ Friedl (oblique) is back from the injured list in a corresponding move. Benson, 24, has gone just 1-for-25 (.040) with 14 strikeouts and one walk in 10 major-league games this year with the Reds.
May 20, 2023
Back in big leagues
Benson was recalled by the Reds on Saturday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Benson made the Reds' Opening Day roster but was sent down in mid-April after going 1-for-20 with 12 strikeouts. He struggled initially upon his demotion to Triple-A Louisville, but he's hit .259/.468/.556 since the calendar flipped to May, striking out just 16.5 percent of the time. He could get some opportunities over the next few weeks with Henry Ramos (hip) landing on the injured list.
Apr 13, 2023
Optioned to Louisville
Benson was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
After starting the season with just a .145 OPS through eight games, Benson will return to the minors as Nick Senzel (toe) returns from the 10-day IL. The 24-year-old outfielder slashed .275/.424/.516 in Triple-A last season and could return to the big leagues if he puts up similar numbers.
Apr 8, 2023
Out of Saturday's lineup
Benson is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Benson is 1-for-13 with a walk and nine strikeouts through four games this year and will head to the bench Saturday with southpaw Bailey Falter pitching for Philadelphia. TJ Friedl will shift to left field while Jose Barrero starts in center.
Apr 5, 2023
Sits amid 0-for-12 start
Benson is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Benson opened the season in a strong-side platoon role in the outfield, but his hold on a near-everyday gig could be slipping. He'll be taking a seat Wednesday versus Cubs right-hander Marcus Stroman after going hitless with nine strikeouts in 12 at-bats through his first three starts of the campaign.
Apr 3, 2023
Resting versus lefty
Benson is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Cincinnati will go with a righty-heavy lineup to counter Cubs southpaw Drew Smyly, so Benson will take a seat along with fellow lefty-hitting regulars Jason Vosler, TJ Friedl and Jake Fraley. Stuart Fairchild will spell Benson in the corner outfield.
Apr 1, 2023
Sitting Saturday
Benson will sit Saturday against the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Benson started in left field in the season opener but went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts. Stuart Fairchild will take over in left with veteran southpaw Rich Hill on the mound for Pittsburgh.
Mar 29, 2023
Makes Opening Day roster
Benson has made the Reds' Opening Day roster, Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
After being traded from the Guardians to the Reds in early February, Benson entered spring training on the roster bubble. However, his spot on the Opening Day roster isn't particularly surprising due to his strong showing in Cactus League play. The 24-year-old hit .327 with a homer, five runs, three RBI and six stolen bases over 17 spring games and has displayed power potential in the minors over the past two seasons. While he has just 28 major-league games under his belt, Benson will be in the mix to serve as the Reds' primary center fielder to begin the year and offers decent power and speed upside.
Feb 28, 2023
Positive early impression
Benson has three stolen bases and has played good defense in center field early on in spring training, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Benson is hardly guaranteed an Opening Day roster spot, let alone regular playing time, but has some things working in his favor. Nick Senzel doesn't appear likely to be ready for the start of the season, and it's possible Joey Votto could also begin the year on the IL, pushing Wil Myers to first base. Moreover, the Reds don't have many left-handed hitting options in the outfield. Benson has a decent power/speed upside that would make him a decent home park streaming play, similar to teammate Jake Fraley.
Feb 8, 2023
Traded to Reds
Benson was traded from the Guardians to the Reds on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
It was a swap of outfielders, with Justin Boyd heading to the Guardians in return. Cleveland will also get a player to be named later or cash considerations. Benson, the 14th overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft, went just 10-for-55 (.182) over his first 28 major-league games with during the 2022 regular season. But he possesses decent power and speed and has put up a shiny .873 OPS in 116 career games at the Triple-A level. The 24-year-old should have a clearer path to regular playing time in Cincinnati.
Sep 1, 2022
Yet to make impact in majors
Benson is slashing .143/.211/.143 with one RBI and seven runs scored through his first 38 major-league plate appearances.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old rookie hasn't record a multi-hit effort or an extra-base hit in 17 games. Benson has started the last two games in center field as the Guardians try to address their offensive void at that position with Myles Straw slumping. Benson could provide some speed if he got on base more consistently, as he had 16 steals in 20 attempts in 89 games for Triple-A Columbus prior to his call-up at the start of August.
