Knocks in two
Abreu started in center field and went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Tuesday's 9-7 loss to the Rays.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox made what looked like a blowout early into a fun affair. Abreu's two-run double in the fifth inning followed Enmanuel Valdez's three-run home run in the fourth, cutting the Rays' early seven-run lead to 7-5. Both Abreu and Valdez, who were acquired from the Astros last season in exchange for Christian Vazquez, have gotten their first tastes of the majors in 2023. Abreu made a second consecutive start after missing a handful of games last week dur to a hand injury. He's been a bright spot since being called up in late August, posting a .371/.435/.565 line in 23 games.

Sitting again Tuesday
Abreu (hand) is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rangers.
ANALYSIS

Day-to-day with hand injury
Abreu is day-to-day with a left hand injury but is expected to avoid the 10-day injured list, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Abreu injured his left hand when he crashed into the outfield wall while trying to catch Matt Chapman's walk-off triple on Sunday in Toronto. The hand was heavily bandaged after the game, but those bandages have since been removed and the hope is he'll be available as soon as Tuesday. "He's day to day," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Monday. "He's not starting today and we'll try to stay away from him today, and hopefully he'll be back tomorrow. He's gonna see the doctor soon and then we'll go from there."
Sep 18, 2023
On bench against lefty
Abreu is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
The lefty-hitting Abreu will hit the bench for the second game in a row while the Red Sox oppose another southpaw (Jordan Montgomery) in the series opener in Arlington. The righty-hitting Ceddanne Rafaela will enter the starting nine in his stead, and he and Abreu seem likely to form a platoon in center field and at the leadoff spot for the duration of the season.
Sep 17, 2023
Sitting against lefty
Abreu is absent from the lineup Sunday at Toronto.
ANALYSIS
Ceddanne Rafaela will start in center field and bat leadoff as the Red Sox take on Blue Jays left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu. Abreu, a left-handed hitter, has gone 1-for-6 with three strikeouts in limited major-league action versus southpaws.
Sep 16, 2023
Late addition to lineup
Abreu will lead off and play center field Saturday against Toronto after Triston Casas (shoulder) was scratched, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Abreu had been set for an off day, but Casas' continued injury troubles led to a change in plans. He'll push Adam Duvall to left field, which moves Masataka Yoshida to designated hitter and Justin Turner from DH to Casas' spot at first base.
Sep 16, 2023
Heads to bench
Abreu will be on the bench for Saturday's game against the Blue Jays, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Abreu sits after starting nine of the previous 11 games, a stretch in which he hit .382/.432/.471 with a pair of steals. Adam Duvall starts in center field Saturday.

Tallies four hits in twin bill
Abreu went 4-for-6 with a run, two RBI, a stolen base and a walk across both games of a doubleheader split with the Yankees on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Abreu collected three hits in the matinee, including a first-inning single that plated the first run of the game. He added a single and a walk in the nightcap before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the eighth frame. Abreu went through a 1-for-17 stretch between Aug. 25 and Sept. 8, but since then he's swung a hot bat, going 11-for-20 with three runs, five RBI and two steals over his past six games.
Sep 10, 2023
Goes 5-for-5, swipes bag
Abreu went 5-for-5 with a walk, a double, three RBI, two runs scored and a steal in Saturday's 13-12 loss against the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Abreu stuffed the stat sheet Saturday, reaching base in all six plate appearances and stealing his first big-league base. The 24-year-old rookie has looked impressive through his first 12 career games, posting a .353 batting average with a home run, four doubles, eight RBI and six runs in 34 at-bats.
Sep 4, 2023
Batting leadoff Monday
Abreu is starting in center field and batting leadoff Monday versus the Rays, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Alex Verdugo is sitting out with a tight hamstring, so Adam Duvall will shift over to right field while Abreu handles center. Abreu has reached base nine times in his first seven major-league games but has found playing time hard to come by.

Returns from paternity leave
The Red Sox activated Abreu from the paternity list Thursday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Abreu has been away from the team since Monday spending time with his growing family. He's gotten off to a hot start in his major-league career, going 6-for-17 with a homer and five RBI across his first five games. David Hamilton was optioned to Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move.
Aug 30, 2023
Expected back Friday
Abreu is expected to return from the paternity leave list Friday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Abreu was excused from the Red Sox on Monday as he welcomed a new addition to his growing family. The 24-year-old outfielder has gone 6-for-17 (.353) with one homer, two doubles and five RBI through his first five major-league games and should see fairly regular playing time down the stretch for Boston.
Aug 28, 2023

Aug 25, 2023
Not in lineup Friday
Abreu is not in the lineup Friday against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Abreu has gone 6-for-12 with two doubles, a homer and five RBI through his first three major-league games, but he'll grab some rest Friday as the Red Sox open a three-game series versus the visiting Dodgers. Masataka Yoshida, Adam Duvall and Alex Verdugo are starting across the outfield in Boston.
Aug 24, 2023
Four hits, first homer in win
Abreu went 4-for-5 with a double, a home run and four RBI in Thursday's 17-1 victory over the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Abreu extended the Red Sox lead to 3-0 in the second inning with his first big-league homer, a 431-foot blast off J.P. France. The 24-year-old outfielder is now 6-for-12 over his first three games with Boston after batting .274 with 22 homers and a .929 OPS in 86 Triple-A contests. Abreu's power potential makes him an intriguing option in deeper leagues, as he could see more playing time while Jarren Duran (toe) is sidelined.
Aug 24, 2023
Makes first MLB start
Abreu started in left field and went 0-for-4 with a walk and an RBI in Wednesday's extra-inning 7-5 win over Houston.
ANALYSIS
Abreu made his first MLB start and knocked in his first RBI with a fifth-inning groundout. He was later caught stealing in the 10th inning. The 24-year-old outfielder could fit into the mix in the coming days, as Jarren Duran (toe) is on the injured list and Adam Duvall fouled a ball off his foot during Wednesday's game.
Aug 23, 2023
Enters for ejected Verdugo
Abreu went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Tuesday's 7-3 loss to Houston.
ANALYSIS
Abreu made his MLB debut when he entered to play right field after Alex Verdugo was ejected. Abreu was called up to Boston after Jarren Duran (toe) was added to the injured list. He was also one of the hottest hitters in the minors during August, slashing .424/.528/.949 with nine homers, four doubles, 25 RBIs, 18 runs, 12 walks, 10 strikeouts and three steals in 17 games for Triple-A Worcester.

Gets first call against former team
Abreu was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, although he is not in the lineup against the Astros, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Abreu was traded from Houston to Boston a little over a year ago as part of the package that netted the Astros Christian Vazquez, and he could see his first big-league action against the team that originally signed him out of Venezuela in 2017. The lefty-hitting outfielder was already on the 40-man roster, and his ability to play all three outfield spots could come in handy for Boston with Jarren Duran (toe) on the shelf. Abreu hit .274 with 22 home runs and eight steals in 86 games at Triple-A. Adam Duvall figures to be the primary center fielder while Duran is out.
Aug 22, 2023
Joining big-league club
Abreu will be recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Abreu is poised to make his major-league debut after slashing .274/.391/.538 with 22 home runs, 65 RBI, eight stolen bases and 67 runs scored over 66 contests at Triple-A. The team has yet to announce a corresponding move, but he could be taking the place of Jarren Duran (toe), who may require a trip to the 10-day injured list. If Duran is forced to miss time, Abreu should see opportunities in center field along with Adam Duvall.

Suffers hamstring strain
Abreu was placed on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Worcester on Saturday, retroactive to June 2, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
It's not believed to be a serious injury, but Abreu will still miss at least a week of action. The 23-year-old has looked comfortable in his first taste of the Triple-A level this season and has an .846 OPS with eight home runs and a 28:40 BB:K in 40 games.

Debuts at Triple-A on Tuesday
Abreu (hamstring) returned from Triple-A Worcester's 7-day injured list and went 1-for-7 with a pair of walks and a run while starting Tuesday and Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Acquired from the Astros last summer in the deal that sent Christian Vazquez to Houston, Abreu got off to a delayed start to the 2023 campaign after suffering a left hamstring strain in a March 5 Grapefruit League game. Now healthy again, the 23-year-old looks like he'll handle a near-everyday role for Worcester. Though Abreu lacks any exciting fantasy tools, he boasts a discerning eye at the plate; he was one of five minor-league players to record at least 100 walks in 2022.
Mar 5, 2023
Left with hamstring strain
Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters after Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins that Abreu exited with a left hamstring strain, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
"[Abreu] will be out for a while," Alex Cora said. Abreu strained the hamstring while running out a base hit against the Marlins. The outfielder is coming off a strong 2020 season where he homered 19 times and stole 31 bases with an .831 OPS at the Double-A level, and was acquired from the Astros in the deal for Christian Vazquez. Abreu has a chance to make his MLB debut in 2023, but it sounds like he'll begin the season on the minor-league injured list.

Leaves spring game with injury
Abreu left Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins with an apparent lower body injury, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Abreu appeared to hurt himself while running down the first base line, and left the contest. The 23-year-old will likely be examined further by trainers, and there should be an update on his status going forward in the coming days.
