Shut down for season
Darvish (elbow) was officially shut down for the rest of the season Tuesday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish has been on the injured list since late August due to a bone spur in his right elbow. Progress in his recovery has been slower than expected, so he will rest for the next few weeks and remain out for the remainder of 2023. The 37-year-old righty will finish the season with a 4.56 ERA and 1.30 WHIP alongside a 141:43 K:BB through 136.1 innings.
Aug 31, 2023
Shut down with bone spur
Darvish was diagnosed Thursday with a bone spur in his right elbow and will be shut down temporarily, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish has not yet been ruled out for the remainder of the year, but that could certainly happen eventually given that the Padres are currently 7.5 games back of the third NL Wild Card spot. The veteran right-hander was placed on the 15-day injured list this past Monday with an initial diagnosis of elbow inflammation.
Aug 28, 2023
Moved to IL with elbow inflammation
The Padres placed Darvish on the 15-day injured list Monday with right elbow inflammation.
ANALYSIS
San Diego had been listing Darvish as its confirmed starting pitcher for Wednesday's series finale in St. Louis, but the right-hander will end up being deactivated after he picked up the elbow injury in his most recent outing Friday in Milwaukee or during his between-starts bullpen session. The Padres had moved the struggling Rich Hill to the bullpen this past weekend, but he'll presumably step back into the rotation to fill the spot vacated by Darvish, who won't be eligible to return until Sept. 10.
Aug 25, 2023
Tagged with five runs
Darvish (8-10) allowed five runs on six hits and a walk over four innings Friday, striking out three and taking a loss against Milwaukee.
ANALYSIS
Darvish's night was ruined by an ugly third inning in which the Brewers plated five runs. After posting a 2.55 ERA in his first six starts after the All-Star break, he's coughed up 13 runs over 16 frames (7.31 ERA) over his last three outings. On the year, he's sporting a 4.56 ERA with a 141:43 K:BB through 136.1 frames. Darvish is currently expected to face the Giants at home next week.
Aug 20, 2023
Fans seven in Saturday's loss
Darvish (8-9) took the loss in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Diamondbacks, giving up four runs on nine hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander didn't pitch poorly, but San Diego's hitters couldn't get anything going in an eventual 8-1 loss as Arizona used a bullpen day. Darvish remains winless in August, but his 3.60 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 21:4 K:BB through 25 innings on the month have been solid. He'll look for a better result in his next outing, likely to come next weekend in Milwaukee.
Aug 15, 2023
Makes history but takes loss
Darvish fell to 8-8 with a loss against Baltimore on Monday, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out six batters over seven innings.
ANALYSIS
Darvish moved past Hideo Nomo for most strikeouts by a Japanese-born pitcher in MLB history when he fanned Ramon Urias in the sixth inning. That impressive feat aside, it was another frustrating performance for the right-hander, as he pitched pretty well overall but got little run support and took the loss. Darvish has posted a 2.70 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB across 20 frames over three August starts but doesn't have a win to show for it. He's at a 2.98 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 42:13 K:BB over 42.1 innings in seven starts since the All-Star break.
Aug 10, 2023
Lacks run support again
Darvish allowed an unearned run on six hits and two walks while striking out four over six innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Darvish has allowed just three runs (two earned) over his last 19 innings across three starts, but he has just one win to show for it in that span. The veteran right-hander was able to trim his ERA to 4.19 with the strong outing, though he still has a shaky 1.25 WHIP and 125:40 K:BB through 120.1 innings over 21 starts. Darvish is projected for a tough matchup in his next start at home versus the Orioles next week.
Aug 5, 2023
Quality start goes to waste
Darvish allowed two runs on five hits and struck out four without walking a batter over seven innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Darvish put the Padres in a position to win, but the bullpen melted down over the final two frames to squander his quality start. He's posted four quality starts in five outings since the All-Star break, with the lone exception a seven-run disaster versus the Pirates on July 24. Darvish is now at a 4.41 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 121:38 K:BB through 114.1 innings over 20 starts this season. He's projected for a road start in Seattle next week.
Jul 30, 2023
Tosses six shutout innings
Darvish (8-7) allowed three hits and two walks while striking out nine over six shutout innings to earn the win over the Rangers on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Darvish has turned in three quality starts over four outings since the All-Star break. This was a good bounce-back for him after the Pirates tagged him for seven runs in 4.1 innings in his last start. Darvish continues to battle inconsistency this season with a 4.53 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 117:38 K:BB through 107.1 innings over 19 starts. The 36-year-old is lined up for a home start against the Dodgers next week.
Jul 25, 2023
Hit hard Monday
Darvish (7-7) allowed seven runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out three over 4.1 innings to take the loss Monday versus the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was tagged for a season-high four homers Monday, which saw him fail to complete five frames for just the second time all season. He'd allowed just one run over 12 innings across his first two starts of the second half. The right-hander's poor start inflated his ERA to 4.80 with a 1.31 WHIP and 108:36 K:BB through 101.1 innings over 18 starts this season. Darvish is lined up for a tough home start versus the Rangers this weekend.
Jul 20, 2023
Blanks Jays for seventh win
Darvish (7-6) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing four hits and three walks over six scoreless innings in a 2-0 victory over Toronto. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander was brilliant, generating 31 called or swinging strikes among his 100 pitches as he delivered his second straight quality start and seventh of the season. Darvish has had trouble maintaining any success in 2023 -- the quality start streak of two is the longest he's managed -- and since the beginning of June he sports a 4.02 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 46:16 K:BB through 40.1 innings. He'll try to keep rolling in his next outing, likely to come at home early next week against the Pirates.
Jul 14, 2023
Evens record at 6-6
Darvish (6-6) earned the win Friday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over six innings against the Phillies. He struck out nine.
ANALYSIS
The 36-year-old turned in a vintage performance in his first start of the second half, inducing 13 swinging strikes on 94 pitches. Darvish limped into the All-Star break with a 6.97 ERA over his last six starts, so this was a big step in the right direction. The peripherals are significantly better than the surface stats to this point, and with that, we should expect more positive regression for Darvish in the weeks and months ahead.
Jul 8, 2023
Yields three runs in return
Darvish (illness) gave up three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four over five innings in a no-decision versus the Mets on Friday.
ANALYSIS
An non-COVID-19 illness cost Darvish two starts, though he didn't go on the injured list. The right-hander was a little off in terms of quality in his return to action, but he saw a full workload with 100 pitches (58 strikes) in the outing. Darvish closes a disappointing first half with a 4.87 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 89:28 K:BB through 85 innings over 15 starts. He'll get another extended rest with the All-Star break before lining up for a road start in Philadelphia to begin the second half.
Jul 5, 2023
On track for Friday
Darvish (illness) is lined up to start Friday against the Mets, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish has missed his last couple of turns in the Padres' rotation because of a non-COVID viral illness, but he's managed to avoid the IL and is feeling well enough to return to action just before the All-Star break. The 36-year-old right-hander currently stands 5-6 with a 4.84 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 85:25 K:BB through 80 innings (14 starts) this season.
Jul 4, 2023
Aims for weekend return
Darvish (illness) said Tuesday that he's aiming to return to the Padres' rotation this weekend against the Mets, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish hasn't pitched since June 21 due to a viral illness that caused him to lose about seven pounds, but he is beginning to regain his strength and should be able to fit in one more outing before the All-Star break. When healthy this season, the veteran right-hander has gone 5-6 with a 4.84 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 85:25 K:BB in 14 starts covering 80 innings.
Jul 2, 2023
Won't start Sunday
Darvish (illness) won't be available to start Sunday's game against the Reds, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was moved off a scheduled start this past Tuesday in Pittsburgh while he battled an illness, but the Padres held out hope that he would show enough improvement to slot back into the rotation for the weekend series in Cincinnati. The right-hander evidently hasn't fully moved past the ailment, however, so he'll get at least one more day off to recover before the Padres revisit when he might return during the final week before the All-Star break. Adrian Morejon will draw the start Sunday, but he may be serving as more of an opener since he hasn't recorded more than seven outs in any of his appearances in the majors or minors this season.
Jun 29, 2023
Questionable for weekend
Darvish (illness) is questionable for the Padres' three-game weekend series against the Reds, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Seth Lugo is expected to start Friday's series opener in Cincinnati, but the Padres are still in wait-and-see mode on both Darvish and Michael Wacha (shoulder) as they hold off on setting the remainder of the weekend assignments. Darvish was scratched from his previous turn Tuesday versus the Pirates due to an illness and has yet to throw his typical between-starts bullpen session. Probably the best-case scenario is that he returns for Sunday's series finale at Great American Ball Park, with Wacha handling Saturday's game.
Jun 28, 2023
Still battling illness
Darvish (illness) might be pushed back again in the Padres' rotation, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish fell ill -- and was scratched -- ahead of his scheduled start Tuesday against the Pirates and he was still feeling unwell as of Wednesday evening. It's unclear at this point when he might be able to slot back in for San Diego. Blake Snell is taking the mound Wednesday night in Pittsburgh and Joe Musgrove will handle Thursday's series finale. There should be a fresh update on Darvish's status around the end of the week.
Jun 27, 2023
Not starting Tuesday
Darvish will miss his scheduled start Tuesday against the Pirates due to illness, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish's illness will sit him down for Tuesday's start, though it's certainly possible he returns before his next turn in the rotation -- currently scheduled for July 2 against Cincinnati. Reiss Knehr will come out of the Padres' bullpen to start in Darvish's place.
Jun 22, 2023
Surrenders four runs in loss
Darvish (5-6) allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six over six innings, taking the loss Wednesday versus the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was done in by a rough fifth inning, which saw the Giants rally for all four runs on five hits, a walk and a sacrifice fly. It's the second start in a row where the right-hander has dropped off in the fifth -- while it's too soon to call it a pattern, it's at least something to monitor over the remainder of the first half. He's given up 14 runs across 16.1 innings in his last three starts, raising his ERA for the year to 4.84 with a 1.23 WHIP and 85:25 K:BB through 80 innings. Darvish is lined up for a road start in Pittsburgh next week.
Jun 17, 2023
Tagged with six runs
Darvish (5-5) yielded six runs on eight hits and a walk over five innings Friday, striking out five and taking a loss against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Darvish coughed up two runs through four innings before the Rays broke the game open in the fifth, led by Randy Arozarena's three-run shot. Over his last two starts, Darvish has allowed 10 runs in 10.1 innings, shooting his ERA back up to 4.74 through 13 starts in 2023. He's given up at least four runs in six of those outings, including four of his last six. He'll look to move back over .500 in his next start, which is lined up to be in San Francisco next week.
Jun 14, 2023
Pushed back to Friday
Darvish will make his next scheduled start Friday against the Rays, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was on turn to pitch Thursday versus the Guardians, but he and Ryan Weathers will flip-flop spots. It's a big downgrade in matchup for Darvish, but you can understand it from the Padres' perspective in not wanting to throw Weathers against Tampa Bay.
Jun 4, 2023
Dazzles in win
Darvish (4-4) earned the win Saturday over the Cubs, allowed two hits and a walk while striking out nine over seven shutout innings.
ANALYSIS
Darvish had his worst start of the year versus the Yankees on Sunday, but he responded in a big way. This was the second time he's completed seven innings in 2023, and the three baserunners he allowed were a season low. The 36-year-old's performance has tailed off a bit -- he'd allowed at least four runs in three of his previous six starts before Saturday's dominant showing. Darvish is at a 4.10 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 68:18 K:BB through 63.2 innings through 11 outings this season. He'll look to build off this one, though he's projected for a challenging road start in Colorado his next time out.
May 28, 2023
Rough outing in New York
Darvish (3-4) took the loss Sunday, allowing seven runs on seven hits over 2.2 innings against the Yankees. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Darvish allowed five consecutive hits without recording an out in the third inning, eventually surrendering six runs in the frame. It's been an up-and-down year for Darvish -- he's ERA is up to 5.74 through five starts in May after posting a 3.60 mark in April. Overall, the 36-year-old Darvish sports a 4.61 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP and 59:17 K:BB through 10 starts (56.2 innings) this season. He'll look to right the ship in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week against the Cubs.
May 23, 2023
Solid in third win
Darvish (3-3) picked up the win Tuesday, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk over six innings in a 7-4 victory over the Nationals. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander delivered his fourth quality start of the season, with three of them coming in his last four outings. Darvish tossed 67 of 90 pitches for strikes and blanked Washington for four innings before CJ Abrams and Lane Thomas homered back-to-back in the fifth. Darvish will take a 3.67 ERA and 59:17 K:BB through 54 innings into his next start, which is likely to come on the road this weekend in Yankee Stadium.
May 17, 2023
Knocked around
Darvish (2-3) took the loss Wednesday, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against the Royals. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was in control through five innings, having allowed just one run, Darvish started the sixth by walking Bobby Witt then gave up three extra-base hits before being pulled. The sixth inning pushed Darvish's ERA up to 3.56 and his WHIP to 1.13. The righty is tentatively scheduled to face the Nationals in his next start.
May 11, 2023
Fans seven in no-decision
Darvish allowed two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out seven batters in a no-decision against Minnesota on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was efficient in the outing, needing a modest 80 pitches (52 of which were strikes) to get through six frames. He departed with a one-run lead, but the Padres bullpen couldn't hold it, saddling Darvish with a no-decision. The right-hander nonetheless picked up his third quality start of the campaign and lowered his ERA to 3.16. Darvish also sports a 1.08 WHIP and 47:14 K:BB across 42.2 innings.
May 6, 2023
Rebounds nicely Friday
Darvish (2-2) earned the win Friday over the Dodgers, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out six over 6.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Darvish gave up one run in each of the first and seventh innings, and he was tough to hit in between those hiccups. The right-hander rebounded from giving up three homers in last appearance, though that one came at altitude in Mexico City last Sunday. This was Darvish's second quality start in six outings this season, and he has a 3.19 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 40:13 K:BB through 36.2 innings. He's on track for a road start in Minnesota next week.
Apr 30, 2023
Gives up three homers
Darvish did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing four runs on nine hits over six innings against the Giants. He struck out nine.
ANALYSIS
Darvish fell victim to the high altitude of Mexico City, allowing a trio of solo home runs to LaMonte Wade, J.D. Davis and Mitch Haniger in separate innings. However, he was able to salvage the outing by allowing just one other run while also striking out nine. Darvish's swing-and-miss arsenal has been inconsistent this season, with 21 of his 34 punchouts coming from two appearances. He is tentatively scheduled to make his next start Saturday against the hard-hitting Dodgers.
Apr 27, 2023
Cleared to start Sunday
Darvish (hamstring) is listed as the Padres' probable starting pitcher for Sunday's game against the Giants in Mexico City.
ANALYSIS
Darvish experienced right hamstring cramping in his most recent start April 23 in Arizona, but with the Padres having two days off this week, the right-hander was afforded some extra recovery time and appears to have recovered nicely. He takes a 1-2 record, 3.00 ERA and 1.13 WHIP into his fifth start of the season this weekend.
Apr 26, 2023
On track to start Sunday
Darvish (hamstring) is on track to start Sunday for the Padres against the Giants in Mexico City, Joey Pollizze of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish left Sunday's start against the Diamondbacks with a right hamstring crap, but the right-hander's absence was described as precautionary. If there are any signs of setback it's possible the Padres could push Darvish back, but it does appear that the 36-year-old won't end up missing any time with the hamstring trouble.
Apr 23, 2023
Expected to make next start
Darvish was diagnosed with a right hamstring cramp after exiting Sunday's start against the Diamondbacks, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish exited with a trainer in the bottom of the sixth inning Sunday, but his injury isn't believed to be particularly serious. Manager Bob Melvin said after the game that he expects Darvish to make his next start, which lines up for next weekend against the Giants. Following Sunday's start in which he earned his first win of the season, Darvish now has a 3.00 ERA, 25:12 K:BB and 1.13 WHIP in 24 innings over his first four outings in 2023.
Apr 23, 2023
Exits Sunday's start
Darvish was removed from Sunday's start against Arizona in the bottom of the sixth inning due to an apparent lower-body injury, Bob Scanlan of Bally Sports San Diego reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish's start was pushed from Saturday to Sunday, and he allowed a run on two hits and five walks while striking out five in 5.2 innings prior to exiting with a trainer in the sixth frame. The exact nature and severity of his injury are unclear, and whether he'll be able to make his next scheduled start remains to be seen.
Apr 18, 2023
Start pushed back to Sunday
Darvish is now scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was originally scheduled to get the ball Saturday against Arizona, but Joe Musgrove is now going to make his season debut in that contest, so the ace of the Padres will be moved to Sunday.
Apr 17, 2023
Tough-luck loss Sunday
Darvish (0-2) allowed one run on four hits and two walks over seven innings Sunday, striking out 12 while taking the loss against the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was locked into a pitcher's duel with Wade Miley and unfortunately came out on the wrong side despite a dazzling performance. The 36-year-old had solid command of all his pitches, finishing with 10+ strikeouts for the 50th time in his career. Darvish was defeated via small ball after Garrett Mitchell reached via a bunt single in the second inning. He got to second on a balk and then stole third before crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly by Brian Anderson. It was a nice bounce back outing from Darvish, who lowered his ERA to 3.44 to go with a 1.09 WHIP over 18.1 innings. He'll be in search of his first win of the year when he takes the mound next weekend against the Diamondbacks.
Apr 10, 2023
Tagged with five runs
Darvish (0-1) allowed five runs on six hits and a walk Monday, striking out five and taking a loss against the Mets.
ANALYSIS
The veteran righty coughed up a two-run double to Jeff McNeil in the third inning. That was the only damage against Darvish until the Mets plated three runs in the seventh. It's been a rocky start for him in 2023; he's given up six runs with an 8:5 K:BB through 11.1 frames. Darvish is projected for another tough matchup next week with a home outing against Atlanta.
Apr 4, 2023
Walks four in season debut
Darvish did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and four walks over five innings in an 8-6 loss to Arizona. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Due to limited usage in the World Baseball Classic, Darvish's season debut was pushed back as he needed a bit more time to build up his arm. While this wasn't his most dominant outing in terms of whiffs, and his command was spotty at times, Darvish completed five frames on 91 pitches and left with the lead. He will look to build on this performance his next time out in what projects as a road matchup against the Mets.
Mar 23, 2023
Likely to start fifth or sixth game
Darvish likely won't make his 2023 debut until the fifth or sixth game of the regular season, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish probably would have been the Opening Day starter for the Padres, but he got limited use while representing Team Japan in the World Baseball Classic and still has some buildup to do here in late March. He's aiming to throw four innings in one of the team's final remaining Cactus League games and could then jump into the San Diego rotation on April 3 or 4 against the Diamondbacks. Blake Snell looks to be lined up for the Opening Day nod.
Mar 22, 2023
May not start Opening Day
Darvish is unlikely to start Opening Day for the Padres, Bob Scanlan of Bally Sports San Diego reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish pitched just an inning for Team Japan on Tuesday during the World Baseball Classic, and may need some time to get ramped up. Scanlan notes that Darvish will report to camp Thursday, and that the right-hander ended the offseason throwing 80-pitch bullpens so it shouldn't take much time to get him lengthened. Darvish may not get the Opening Day assignment, but he should still get a regular load for San Diego and has a chance to be an excellent fantasy option for the 2023 campaign.
Mar 21, 2023
Won't start WBC final against USA
Darvish will not start Tuesday for Team Japan in the World Baseball Classic final against Team USA, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
It will instead be Shota Imanaga on the mound to begin the contest. Davish was the presumed starter for the contest, and it's likely both he and Shohei Ohtani will be available out of the bullpen for the championship contest with Darvish likely available for multiple innings. Padres manager Bob Melvin has expressed concern about the lack of innings Darvish has received in the tournament, so it'll be interesting to see how much -- if at all -- the 36-year-old pitches against USA on Tuesday.
Mar 16, 2023
Concern about WBC usage
Padres manager Bob Melvin expressed concern Thursday about Darvish's lack of usage in the World Baseball Classic, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was brought on in relief for Team Japan in Wednesday's win over Team Italy, and he has logged only five total innings so far in the WBC. Opening Day is just two weeks away, and the Padres are worried that the ace right-hander won't be fully built up out of the gate. Maybe he can be pushed a little longer in the next round(s) of the tournament to mitigate some of the frustration coming out of Padres camp. Japan is set to play a semifinal game on Monday.
Mar 14, 2023
May not pitch in Cactus League
San Diego manager Bob Melvin said Monday that Darvish, who is currently pitching for Japan in the World Baseball Classic, may not pitch in any Cactus League contests upon his return to the Padres, Sammy Levitt of 97.3 The Fan reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish made his spring pitching debut for Japan in the WBC on March 10, allowing three runs (two earned) over three innings. It's unclear how Japan's rotation lines up moving forward, but if Darvish doesn't throw in Thursday's quarterfinal contest against Italy early Thursday, he could potentially pitch in the semifinal or championship game, if Japan advances it that far. In such a scenario, the Padres could opt to rest him for the remainder of the spring slate, especially if they plan to put him on the mound for the team's Opening Day matchup versus Colorado on March 30. The WBC provides a much more competitive atmosphere than Cactus League exhibition contests, so Darvish's participation in the tournament could provide enough of a ramp-up to prepare him for the regular season.
Mar 11, 2023
Makes spring debut in WBC
Darvish pitched three innings for Team Japan against Team Korea in the World Baseball Classic on Friday, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and no walks while striking out one batter.
ANALYSIS
After inking a six-year extension with San Diego in early February, Darvish took a measured approach to the start of the spring training, as he didn't pitch in any Cactus League contests before joining Japan for the WBC. The veteran right-hander started smoothly in Friday's game against Korea, retiring the first six batters he faced. However, he gave up three runs in the third inning, including two on a home run by Euji Yang. The rough frame shouldn't deter fantasy managers from pursuing Darvish in drafts, where he's generally been going among the top-25 starting pitchers.

Signs 6-yr, $108M extension
Darvish and the Padres have agreed to a six-year, $108 million contract extension, according to MLB.com's AJ Cassavell and Mark Feinsand.
ANALYSIS
This deal could keep Darvish in San Diego through 2028, pushing into his early-40s. Prior to the new agreement, the 36-year-old right-hander was due $18 million in 2023 with free agency looming next winter. Darvish delivered a stellar 3.10 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 197:37 K:BB across 194.2 regular-season innings (30 starts) last season for the Friars. He also registered a 2.88 ERA and 23:6 K:BB over 25 innings (four starts) in the 2022 playoffs.
Oct 24, 2022
Doesn't factor in Game 5 decision
Darvish did not factor in the decision during Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Phillies in Game 5 of the NLCS, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five over six innings.
ANALYSIS
Darvish recorded his second quality start the NLCS, but the San Diego bullpen was unable to hold on for the victory, eliminating the Padres from the postseason. With two outs in the third inning, a walk followed by a two-run homer from Rhys Hoskins accounted for Darvish's two earned runs, but the 36-year-old righty was still in line for the win until Bryce Harper's go-ahead homer off Robert Suarez. Nonetheless, Darvish had a solid postseason run on the mound, earning a 2.88 ERA with 23 strikeouts over 25 innings, the most he has thrown in a postseason.
Oct 19, 2022
Takes the loss in Game 1
Darvish (0-1) took the loss Tuesday night, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out seven in the 2-0 defeat to the Phillies in Game 1 of the NLCS.
ANALYSIS
Despite being charged with the loss, Darvish pitched a solid game Tuesday night, but he was out-dueled by Zack Wheeler in Game 1. The Phillies were just 3-for-24 against Darvish, but two of his hits allowed were solo homers by Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber. The Padres' ace is struggling to limit home runs in the postseason-he has allowed six earned runs across three starts, and all six runs have come from solo homers. Nonetheless, Darvish has a 2.84 ERA in the postseason while striking out 18 batters across 19 innings.
Oct 16, 2022
Starting Game 1 of NLCS
Darvish will start Game 1 of the NLCS against the Phillies on Tuesday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish has been relatively effective over his first two postseason starts, posting a 3.00 ERA, 11:2 K:BB and 1.25 WHIP in 12 innings. He would've started Game 5 of the NLDS on short rest if needed, but he'll have a few additional days to rest before the NLCS begins Tuesday.

Stung by tough-luck loss
Darvish (10-7) took the loss against Washington on Thursday, pitching 8.1 innings and allowing three runs on five hits and no walks while striking out six batters.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was fantastic through eight frames, yielding only one run (on a third-inning Ildemaro Vargas homer). Darvish kept his pitch count low enough to remain in the contest for the ninth inning, but he was pulled after allowing a single to two of the first three batters he faced. Josh Hader entered from the bullpen and issued a hit-by-pitch, a walk and a sacrifice fly, allowing both inherited runners to score. Darvish thus picked up his third straight loss, though he has pitched relatively well during that stretch with a 3.98 ERA and 20:1 K:BB over 20.1 innings.

Despite the disappointing outcome, it was Darvish's 15th straight start in which he has completed at least six innings. ANALYSIS

The right-hander has turned in six straight quality starts, with Sunday's outing being his first loss in that span. He has a 3.28 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 132:26 K:BB through 134.1 innings across 21 starts this season. Darvish is lined up for an enticing road start against the Nationals next weekend.

ANALYSIS
The game wasn't as much of a laugher for Darvish as the final score suggested, as Colorado grabbed a 3-0 lead before the San Diego offense finally got rolling in the bottom of the fourth. The right-hander threw 71 of 107 pitches for strikes as he delivered his fifth straight quality start and 16th in 20 trips to the mound this season, and he'll take a 3.30 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 127:26 K:BB through 128.1 innings into his next outing.

ANALYSIS
The right-hander took a shutout into the seventh inning before New York finally squeezed across a run. Darvish fired 68 of 99 pitches for strikes before exiting and his splitter was particularly effective, generating a 50 percent swinging strike rate on the night. The quality start was his third in a row and 14th in 18 trips to the mound this season, and Darvish will take a 3.28 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 109:23 K:BB through 115.1 innings into his next outing.

After allowing six homers through his first 14 starts this year, Darvish has given up five long balls in his last three outings. The right-hander still turned in his 13th quality start of the campaign, and he has a 3.41 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 100:22 K:BB through 108.1 innings overall.
Jul 10, 2022
Little help in no-decision
Darvish allowed a run on three hits, two walks and a hit batter while striking out six over seven innings, taking a no-decision in Saturday's loss to the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Darvish allowed three home runs to the Dodgers in his last start, but he kept the ball in the yard this time around. He limited the Giants to a second-inning sacrifice fly from Brandon Crawford, but the Padres mustered only one run of support. Darvish has now gone a season-high three starts without a win. He owns a 3.38 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 91:20 K:BB across 101.1 innings in 16 starts overall. The right-hander is still sporting a 7-4 record heading into next weekend's projected home start versus the Diamondbacks.
Jul 3, 2022
Has trouble with long ball
Darvish (7-4) took the loss Saturday against the Dodgers, allowing five runs on eight hits and no walks with 10 strikeouts in six innings.
ANALYSIS
Darvish had a tough first inning, surrendering solo shots to Freddie Freeman, Will Smith and Justin Turner. The Dodgers got to Darvish for runs in the second and third frames as well before the right-hander finished off his start strong by retiring nine of the last 10 batters he faced. While the 10 strikeouts were a season high, Darvish's quality start streak ended at four with the unsteady effort. He had a 3.53 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 85:18 K:BB through 94.1 innings in 15 starts overall, and he's lined up for a home start against the Giants next weekend.
Jun 26, 2022
Strikes out nine in quality start
Darvish allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in six innings versus the Phillies on Sunday. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Darvish allowed multiple runs for the first time in four starts, with the Phillies picking up two in the second inning and one more in the fifth. Despite the downturn from his recent dominance, this was still a fourth straight quality start for the right-hander. He owns a 3.26 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 75:18 K:BB across 88.1 innings in 14 starts overall. Darvish is projected for a tough road start versus the Dodgers next weekend.
Jun 21, 2022
Yields one run in win
Darvish (7-3) allowed a run on four hits, two walks and two hit batters with five strikeouts in seven innings, earning the win Monday over the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Darvish has been locked in lately, winning three straight starts while allowing only two runs over his last 22 innings in that span. Strangely, he's plunked six batters in those games after only hitting two batters in his first 10 outings. The only run against him Monday was on a Christian Walker sacrifice fly in the first inning. Darvish now has a 3.17 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 66:17 K:BB across 82.1 innings overall. He'll look to remain dominant in his next start, tentatively set for this weekend at home versus the Phillies.
Jun 14, 2022
Fires eight innings in win
Darvish (6-3) allowed one run on five hits over eight innings Monday, striking out seven and earning a win over the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Aside from Yan Gomes' solo shot in the second inning, it was smooth sailing for Darvish as he picked up his second straight win. He's yielded just one run on seven hits over his last 15 frames, lowering his season ERA to 3.35 through 75.1 innings. The veteran righty has allowed two or fewer runs in eight of his 12 starts this year. Darvish is lined up to start in Colorado this weekend.
Jun 8, 2022
Throws seven shutout innings in win
Darvish (5-3) hit three batters and allowed two hits while striking out six over seven scoreless innings to earn the win over the Mets on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
All three hit batters came in the first two innings, and Darvish carried a no-hitter into the sixth before allowing a single to Mark Canha. This was the fourth time in his last six starts Darvish has gone at least seven innings, though this was arguably his best outing of the season despite the early lack of control. The right-hander now owns a 3.61 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 54:15 K:BB in 67.1 innings across 11 starts this season. He'll look to keep going strong in Chicago versus the Cubs next week.
Jun 1, 2022
Nearly goes distance Wednesday
Darvish (4-3) took the loss Wednesday versus the Cardinals. He allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 7.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was efficient, throwing 68 of 95 pitches for strikes, but he faltered a bit towards the end of the start. Nolan Arenado accounted for most of the damage against the right-hander, tagging him for a two-run home run and an RBI single. Darvish has lost consecutive starts for the first time this year, but Wednesday was his longest appearance of the year. He now has a 4.03 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 48:15 K:BB across 60.1 innings in 10 starts. He'll look to get back in the win column next week at home versus the Mets.
May 26, 2022
Tough loss against Brewers
Darvish (4-2) took the loss Wednesday as the Padres fell 2-1 to the Brewers, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over 6.2 innings. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander took a shutout into the seventh inning before stumbling, but the Padres' own troubles scoring runs left Darvish on the hook for the loss. He tossed 108 pitches (68 strikes) en route to his second straight quality start and seventh of the season in nine trips to the mound, and Darvish will take a 3.76 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 44:13 K:BB through 52.2 innings into his next outing.
May 19, 2022
Earns win after seven shutout
Darvish (4-1) earned the win after allowing zero runs on six hits across seven innings during Thursday's 2-0 win over the Phillies. He struck out five and didn't record a walk.
ANALYSIS
Darvish bounced back from a rough outing in his last start to register his third appearance of the season with at least six shutout innings. The right-hander allowed back-to-back singles with one out in the sixth, but that was the most danger he faced all game. His next start is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday's contest in Milwaukee.
May 14, 2022
Escapes with no-decision Friday
Darvish didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 11-6 win over Atlanta, giving up five runs on nine hits and a walk over 5.2 innings while striking out four.
ANALYSIS
The right-handed exited the game after 99 pitches (67 strikes) on the hook for his second loss of the year, but a rally by the Padres in the top of the seventh erased Darvish as the pitcher of record. The outing snapped a streak of four straight quality starts for the 35-year-old, and Darvish will carry a 4.62 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 32:11 K:BB through 39 innings into his next outing.
May 7, 2022
Seven strong frames
Darvish (3-1) recorded the win during Friday's 3-2 victory over Miami, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts in seven innings.
ANALYSIS
Though Darvish didn't have his most dominant stuff, San Diego jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and a Jesus Aguilar home run was the only offense Miami could manage. Aside from a blow-up outing against San Francisco on April 12, the 35-year-old has registered five quality starts totaling 31.2 innings while permitting only six runs. San Diego is currently going with a six-man rotation so Darvish tentatively lines up to face Atlanta on Friday.
Apr 29, 2022
Picks up second win
Darvish (2-1) gave up three runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out five in six innings Friday against the Pirates. He picked up the win.
ANALYSIS
This was a baseline quality start, although Darvish scattered a season-high eight hits. He has now gone six-plus innings in three straight starts and four of five total on the season. Darvish lines up for a home start in the middle of the week against the Marlins.
Apr 24, 2022
Six one-hit innings
Darvish (1-1) registered a no-decision during Saturday's 3-2 victory over the Dodgers, allowing one hit and three walks with seven strikeouts in six scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
Darvish shut down a potent Dodgers offense through six innings, but Los Angeles eventually rallied to tie the game and erase Darvish from the decision. The 35-year-old has now permitted just one run through 18.2 innings aside from surrendering nine runs in 1.2 innings against San Francisco on April 12. He'll look to keep things rolling against the Pirates on Friday.
Apr 17, 2022
Whiffs eight in win
Darvish (1-1) notched the win during Sunday's 2-1 victory over Atlanta, allowing one run on four hits with eight strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Making his first appearance following a blow up against San Francisco on Tuesday, Darvish limited a potent Atlanta offense to four baserunners through nearly seven innings. Manager Bob Melvin opted to keep the righty in the game despite serving up a Marcel Ozuna home run to lead off the seventh inning, but he was later pulled after surrendering a two-out double. The 35-year-old has now submitted two excellent starts through three turns and is set to face the Dodgers on Saturday for his next start.
Apr 13, 2022
Toppled by Giants
Darvish (0-1) took the loss during Tuesday's 13-2 defeat at the hands of the Giants, allowing nine runs on eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Darvish permitted San Francisco to bat around and score six runs in the first inning before loading the bases and surrendering three more runs in the second. It took 57 pitches to record just five outs though the outing can be chalked up to a blip after Darvish was lights out in his opening start against Arizona. Darvish is slated to pitch next on Sunday Night Baseball against Atlanta.
Apr 8, 2022
No-decision Thursday
Darvish didn't factor into the decision Thursday against Arizona after tossing six scoreless innings, walking four and striking out three.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was dominant on the mound in this one, throwing 51 of his 92 pitches for strikes and allowing the Diamondbacks to reach base just four times. This was clearly a step in the right direction for the Japanese hurler, who posted a 4.22 ERA last season.
Mar 31, 2022
Named Opening Day starter
Darvish has been named the Padres' Opening Day starter.
ANALYSIS
Darvish and Joe Musgrove were in the mix to take the mound during the Padres' matchup against Arizona, but Darvish will ultimately get the nod after allowing a run on five hits and no walks while striking out 10 in seven innings across his first two spring starts. After a career year with the Cubs in 2020, the right-hander struggled during his first season with the Padres, finishing the 2021 campaign with a 4.22 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 166.1 innings across 30 starts.
Mar 24, 2022
In contention to start Opening Day
Padres manager Bob Melvin said Tuesday that either Darvish or Joe Musgrove will start Opening Day against the Braves, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish and Musgrove were San Diego's top starters last season, though back and hip issues contributed to a rough second half for Darvish. The veteran right-hander finished the campaign with a 4.22 ERA, yet his 1.09 WHIP was his best mark in a non-shortened season since 2013. Darvish is 35 years old, but he still has excellent strikeout stuff and could rebound from his post-July numbers last season if he can stay healthy.
Mar 16, 2022
Working with adjusted mechanics
Darvish said Tuesday that he worked on his mechanics during the offseason and that his hip has healed "nicely," Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish had a fantastic start to his debut campaign with the Padres in 2021, posting a 2.44 ERA and 115:23 K:BB though his first 96 innings. Things fell apart after that, however, as he registered a 6.65 ERA from July 3 onward. His struggles were at least partly due to back and hip issues that affected him throughout the second half of the campaign, so it makes sense that his offseason mechanical alterations were intended to help place less stress on the lower back and hip area. Darvish was outstanding in 2020 and for the first half of 2021, so there's certainly the possibility of a bounce-back performance this season. However, fantasy managers should keep in mind that the veteran is 36 years old and that back and hip injuries tend to be tough to entirely shake.
Sep 30, 2021
Season officially over
Darvish (hip) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Darvish pitched Tuesday against the Dodgers and allowed two runs on five hits and four walks across four innings. Manager Jayce Tingler announced that outing was Darvish's final start of the season, though that is now official as Darvish hits the injured list. He concludes his season with a 4.22 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 199:44 K:BB across 166.1 innings.
Sep 29, 2021
Labors in final appearance
Darvish (8-11) took the loss during Thursday's 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Dodgers, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks with six strikeouts in four innings.
ANALYSIS
Before the game, manager Jayce Tingler announced Tuesday's start would be Darvish's final of 2021 and it ended up being a dud. Despite a reasonable two runs surrendered, the 35-year-old dealt with heavy traffic on the bases in each of the first three innings and escaped bases-loaded jams in the second and third with minimal damage. Darvish concludes his first campaign in San Diego with an 8-11 record in 30 starts, 166.1 innings, a 4.22 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP and a 199:44 K:BB in a largely disappointing season.
Sep 28, 2021
Likely making final 2021 start
Manager Jayce Tingler said Darvish's start against the Dodgers on Tuesday is likely to be his final outing of the season, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish lines up to start the final game of the season on regular rest Sunday at San Francisco, but it appears the Padres will give him some extra rest to finish the season since they're already eliminated from the playoffs. Darvish has a 6.48 ERA across 25 frames in September, and he'll close out 2021 with a touch matchup against the Dodgers.
Sep 23, 2021
Takes no-decision against Giants
Darvish allowed four runs on three hits and three hits over 5.1 innings Thursday against San Francisco. He had seven strikeouts and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was staked to a 4-0 lead in the first inning but couldn't make it stick. He gave up a two-run homer to Mike Yastrzemski in the second inning and was charged with two more runs when Tim Hill served up a three-run homer to Austin Slater in the sixth immediately after relieving Darvish. Darvish has alternated two good starts with three poor ones during his five September appearances, putting up a 6.48 ERA across 25 innings in that stretch.
Sep 19, 2021
Fires seven shutout innings
Darvish fired seven scoreless innings on three hits and one walk while striking out nine in the loss to the Cardinals on Saturday. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Despite Darvish firing seven shutout innings, the Padres couldn't come up with the win. He surrendered just one extra-base hit, which was a Matt Carpenter double. It was a great bounce-back performance off of his last start, where he gave up eight runs over four innings. The 34-year-old has a 4.13 ERA and 1.06 WHIP with a 10.7 K/9 over 157 innings this season.
Sep 14, 2021
Crushed for eight runs
Darvish (8-10) allowed eight runs on six hits and three walks over four innings Monday, striking out three and taking a loss against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Nearly all of the damage against Darvish came via the long ball as he coughed up four homers in the ugly outing. Five of the runs came in the first inning, including a three-run shot by Evan Longoria. The veteran righty then yielded a pair of home runs in the fourth. It was the first time he's given up multiple homers in a start since July 31 and he's allowed at least four runs in six of his last eight appearances. Darvish's ERA is up to 4.32 with a 177:36 K:BB through 150 innings. He's lined up to take the mound in St. Louis this weekend.
Sep 9, 2021
Dominant in win
Darvish (8-9) earned the win over the Angels on Wednesday, pitching six innings and allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out seven.
ANALYSIS
Darvish entered the contest with a 7.57 ERA over his past nine starts, but he was able to push those struggles aside and hold Los Angeles to a single run over six frames. That helped him earn his first win since June 21 and snap a string of 10 straight starts without a victory. The right-hander will look to carry the momentum into his next start, which is likely to come at San Francisco early next week.
Sep 2, 2021
Hit hard again in loss
Darvish (7-9) lasted just 2.2 innings in a loss to the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and a walk while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
Darvish pitched two clean innings before the wheels completely came off in the third. He was able to record the first out of the frame before surrendering four runs on four consecutive hits, which was capped off by a two-run homer from Josh VanMeter. The suffering wasn't done just yet, as he was charged with another earned run before being pulled with two men on and two outs in the inning. Darvish has posted an ugly 7.57 ERA in nine starts since July 3. His ERA has jumped from a 2.44 to a 4.05 over that span, however, his K/BB has not faltered much over that span. It's unclear if he's still affected by his back injury or if the crackdown on grip enhancers is causing him to struggle, but he certainly has not looked like the pitcher everyone is used to seeing. The 34-year-old will certainly need to turn things around over the final month if the Padres stand any chance of earning that second Wild Card spot. His next chance to take the mound is tentatively scheduled for next week against the Angels.
Aug 27, 2021
Dropped by Dodgers in return
Darvish (7-8) took the loss Thursday in his return from a back injury, allowing four runs on five hits and a walk over six innings against the Dodgers. He had six strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Darvish run into trouble in the third inning, when he gave up a two-run homer to Austin Barnes and a run-scoring double to Corey Seager. Darvish allowed just one run outside of that frame and managed to run up a pitch count of 102 (67 strikes) in his first game off the IL, but he's now winless in his last nine starts, going 0-6 during that stretch with a 6.27 ERA and 12 home runs allowed in 47.1 innings.
Aug 26, 2021
Officially activated
Darvish (back) was officially activated from the injured list before his start Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was expected to be activated from the injured list prior to his start and that move is now official. He struggled for a six-start stretch prior to hitting the injured list, posting a 7.36 ERA and 1.30 WHIP across 29.1 innings. Presumably healthier after a stint on the injured list, Darvish will now look to return to his strong form.

Rejoining rotation Thursday
Darvish (back) will be activated from the 10-day injured list to start Thursday's series finale against the Dodgers, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish has thrown three bullpen sessions within the past week with no issues, clearing the way for his return to the rotation. The 35-year-old will have spent little more than the 10-day minimum on the shelf with lower-back tightness, and manager Jayce Tingler said the right-hander "shouldn't" have any workload limitations in his return.
Aug 25, 2021
Tosses another bullpen
Darvish (back) threw a bullpen session and took part in fielding practice Tuesday, per MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander has now thrown three bullpens since Friday and appears to be on the verge of a return. Padres manager Jayce Tingler suggested as much Tuesday, saying of Darvish's status, "We're getting close." He could rejoin the rotation in time to face the Dodgers during San Diego's current series.
Aug 22, 2021
Expected back for Dodgers series
The Padres are expected to reinstate Darvish (back) from the 10-day injured list this week and have him make a start during the team's three-game series with the Dodgers that begins Tuesday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
After throwing a pair of bullpen sessions over the weekend without incident, Darvish looks like he'll be ready to return from the IL without having to make a minor-league rehab start beforehand. The Padres are presumably penciling Darvish to start the first game of the series Tuesday, and he should have few limitations, if any, with his pitch count in his return to action. Darvish's impending return is a huge boon for a San Diego pitching staff that has been hit hard by the injury bug in recent weeks.
Aug 20, 2021
Tosses bullpen Friday
Darvish (back) threw a bullpen session Friday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish played catch Tuesday and was able to resume mound work Friday. The right-hander has been on the injured list since Aug. 15 due to lower-back tightness, but he's eligible to return during the team's upcoming series against the Dodgers, which begins Aug. 24. Darvish is certainly progressing well in his recovery, but his return timetable depends on how he feels following Friday's throwing session.
Aug 17, 2021
Plays catch Tuesday
Manager Jayce Tingler said Tuesday that Darvish (back) is playing catch, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish landed on the shelf with lower-back tightness over the weekend, so the fact he was never shut down from throwing bodes well for his recovery. The veteran right-hander will be eligible to be activated during the upcoming series against the Dodgers, which begins Aug. 24, though it's uncertain if he'll be ready to pitch by that point.
Aug 15, 2021
Move to IL official
The Padres placed Darvish (back) on the 10-day injured list Sunday, Bob Scanlan of Bally Sports San Diego reports.
ANALYSIS
As anticipated, Darvish will be forced to miss at least one more turn through the rotation after a bout with lower-back tightness cut his most recent outing Thursday against the Diamondbacks short. The banged-up San Diego pitching staff has few reinforcements on hand to replace Darvish, but Reiss Knehr -- who was recalled from Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move -- could be one candidate to pick up a spot start while the reigning National League Cy Young Award runner-up is sidelined.
Aug 15, 2021
Move to IL likely
The Padres are expected to place Darvish (back) on the 10-day injured list, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
After being removed from his 2.2-inning start Thursday against the Diamondbacks with lower-back tightness, Darvish hasn't made enough progress in his recovery to create much optimism that he'll be ready to make his next turn through the rotation. As a result, Darvish will likely be deactivated in the next day or two, becoming the latest in a long list of Padres pitchers to head to the IL. According to Acee, the Padres are exploring bringing in the recently released Jake Arrieta to bolster their dwindling rotation depth, but the club could look internally to fill in for Darvish when his next turn comes up this week.
Aug 14, 2021
Next start in doubt
Darvish (back) may not make his next scheduled start as he deals with back tightness, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Jayce Tingler said Darvish didn't recover from Thursday's short start as quickly as they hoped. The righty hasn't been placed on the injured list, but that remains a possibility if he doesn't improve in the coming days. More information about Darvish's back and when he might pitch next should become clear in the coming days.
Aug 12, 2021
Dealing with back tightness
Darvish was removed from Thursday's start against the Diamondbacks with lower back tightness.
ANALYSIS
Darvish exited his outing with the team's head training after struggling through 2.2 innings. It could be viewed as a positive that his removal wasn't related to the left hip inflammation that sidelined him in July, though it's unclear how serious this injury may be.
Aug 12, 2021
Exits with trainer
Darvish exited Thursday's game against the Diamondbacks with a team trainer, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish struggled prior to exiting, has he allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits and one walk across 2.2 innings. Acee noted that Darvish looked uncomfortable throughout his start, which the results certainly reflect. It's unclear if there is an injury or what the issue may be, though it is worth noting that Darvish was sidelined by left hip inflammation in July.
Aug 8, 2021
Whiffs 12 in no-decision
Darvish didn't factor into the decision during Saturday's 6-2 victory over Arizona, allowing two runs on four hits with 12 strikeouts in seven innings.
ANALYSIS
Darvish limited the damage to a Christian Walker second-inning two-run home run and scattered only two more hits across the other six innings in an excellent rebound outing. Though he didn't earn the win, this was Darvish's first quality start since June and the 12 strikeouts tie his season high. The veteran righty will look to build on the solid performance as he lines up to face the Snakes again next weekend.
Aug 1, 2021
Concludes disappointing July
Darvish (7-6) lost Saturday's 5-3 contest with Colorado, allowing five runs on five hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in six innings.
ANALYSIS
Like much of July, Darvish struggled in this one, surrendering three home runs and five total runs for his fourth time allowing at least four runs in five starts this month. It was the All-Star's fourth loss of July and Darvish's ERA has climbed more than a full run from 2.44 to 3.48 in the stretch. He'll look to get back on track next weekend against the lowly Diamondbacks.
Jul 21, 2021
Gets little help in loss
Darvish (7-4) took the loss Tuesday as the Padres were downed 2-1 by Atlanta, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
The 34-year-old was locked in a surprising pitchers' duel with Touki Toussaint, and when Freddie Freeman broke a 1-1 tie with an opposite-field solo shot in the sixth inning, it tagged Darvish with his second loss in three July starts. He has a 7.36 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 2.5 HR/9 over 14.2 innings on the month, but he'll get a chance to turn things in his next scheduled outing, a road tilt in Miami this weekend.
Jul 19, 2021
Start postponed by weather
Darvish won't make his scheduled start Monday against the Braves, as the game has been postponed due to inclement weather, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It's unclear if Darvish will have his start moved to Tuesday, or if he'll take the bump sometime Wednesday during the team's doubleheader. The team has yet to confirm a starter for Tuesday's matchup.
Jul 19, 2021
Activated for Monday's start
Darvish (hip) was activated from the 10-day injured list and will start Monday in Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander last pitched July 8 and exited that start early with back and hip tightness, but he's ready to pitch after a brief stint on the injured list. Darvish in effect only ended up pushed back a few days in the rotation thanks to his absence coinciding with the All-Star break. He has a 3.09 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 125:24 K:BB across 105 innings this season.
Jul 18, 2021
Tosses encouraging bullpen
Darvish (hip) completed a bullpen session Saturday and remains on track to start Monday against the Braves, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish described the bullpen session as "strong" and indicated that he's "100 percent" and "ready to go Monday." The right-hander also explained that he was dealing with an illness prior to his last start, explaining, "I felt it in my head. The next two days I was feeling good. But the day of my start, right before the game I went to the bullpen, I started to feel a little like achy in my body." The illness may have been a factor in his poor outing and the Padres' subsequent decision to place him on the injured list, though left hip inflammation was the official diagnosis. Now that the hip is better and Darvish is past the illness, he should have no restrictions when he starts at Atlanta on Monday.
Jul 16, 2021
Expected to start Monday
The Padres are planning to activate Darvish (hip) from the 10-day injured list to start Monday's game against Atlanta, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish landed on the IL with left hip inflammation July 11, but if he's indeed reinstated Monday, he will have spent just the minimum 10 days off the active roster. Darvish was roughed up by the Nationals in his last outing before the break, allowing six runs on eight hits across just three innings.
Jul 11, 2021
Shifts to IL
The Padres placed Darvish on the 10-day injured list Sunday with left hip inflammation.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was previously removed from his most recent start Thursday against the Nationals due to back and hip tightness, but follow-up tests revealed that the latter injury was the main concern. The right-hander's move to the IL will leave him unavailable for Wednesday's All-Star Game, and the timing of the transaction also means that Darvish won't be eligible to pitch for the Padres until their fourth game of the second half July 19 in Atlanta. The Padres will wait and see how Darvish's inflamed hip responds to rest over the next few days before the club determines whether he'll need to be replaced in the rotation coming out of the All-Star break.
Jul 9, 2021
Unlikely to pitch in All-Star game
Manager Jayce Tingler said Friday that Darvish is "unlikely" to pitch in Tuesday's All-Star Game after the right-hander exited Thursday's start with back and hip tightness, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports .
ANALYSIS
Tingler's update comes as little surprise given the relative insignificance of Tuesday's exhibition. Darvish still figures to have a strong chance of pitching soon after the club returns from the break July 16, though his availability likely won't be finalized until the latter part of next week.
Jul 9, 2021
Battling back, hip tightness
Darvish was pulled from Thursday's start against the Nationals with back and hip tightness, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander delivered his worst outing of the season Thursday with six runs allowed across three frames. Darvish first dealt with the back issue last month, but the injury resurfaced versus Washington, along with some hip tightness. The injuries don't sound overly severe, though it could still affect the veteran's availability for Tuesday's All-Star Game in Colorado.
Jul 9, 2021
Hit hard in no-decision
Darvish allowed six runs on eight hits with two strikeouts in three innings during Thursday's 9-8 win against Washington. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Darvish allowed three runs in the first and three more in the third before exiting with 64 pitches and a 6-0 deficit. Washington tacked on two more runs prior to San Diego responding with nine unanswered and a walk-off win to bail their starter out big time. The game was easily Darvish's worst as the three innings pitched and six runs allowed represent season lows and his ERA jumped from 2.65 to 3.09.
Jul 4, 2021
Falls to Phillies
Darvish (7-3) allowed four runs on six hits and a walk over six innings in a loss to Philadelphia on Saturday. He fanned eight.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was hurt by the long ball in the second inning, giving up solo homers to Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins to open the scoring. Those same two got to Darvish again in the sixth, with Harper breaking a 2-2 tie on a sac fly and Hoskins following up with a run-scoring double. Darvish has allowed four earned runs in four of his last seven starts, but he still owns a sparkling 2.65 ERA and 0.95 WHIP in 17 outings overall. He'll take a National League-leading 123 strikeouts into his next scheduled start next week versus the Nationals.
Jun 27, 2021
Solid in no-decision
Durvish allowed one earned run on six hits and a walk while striking out seven across six innings in the win over the Diamondbacks on Sunday. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Darvish's only run allowed came in the fourth inning when Pavin Smith scored on a wild pitch. The 34-year-old made easy work of the Diamondbacks despite not getting the win. He has allowed just one run in each of his last two starts. On the season, Darvish has a 2.44 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP with a 10.8 K/9 in 96 innings.
Jun 22, 2021
Stymies Dodgers
Darvish (7-2) beat the Dodgers 6-2 Monday, allowing one run on two hits and a walk with 11 strikeouts across six innings.
ANALYSIS
Facing his former team, Darvish dazzled by recording nearly four times as many strikeouts as baserunners allowed. His lone mistake was a first-pitch sinker in the third that Mookie Betts launched over the center field fence. The 34-year-old righty now has eight starts of at least six innings pitched and one or zero runs allowed in 15 turns and possess an excellent 2.50 ERA and 0.92 WHIP.
Jun 16, 2021
Gives up four runs
Darvish didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against the Rockies after allowing four runs on six hits and two walks while fanning five across five innings.
ANALYSIS
Pitching at Coors Field is always tough and Darvish's numbers in this outing reflected that, as he delivered one of his most inefficient outings of the season. The left-hander looked in complete control during the first three innings, but he couldn't hold on and was lifted in the sixth inning before even recording an out. The Japanese hurler saw his ERA increase to 2.57, but he continues to be one of the most reliable pitchers in the National League and should remain a strong play across all formats. He's slated to pitch again during the weekend series against the Reds at home.
Jun 9, 2021
Takes loss despite quality start
Darvish (6-2) was tagged with the loss Wednesday against the Cubs despite giving up two runs on three hits and two walks while fanning eight across seven innings.
ANALYSIS
Darvish looked excellent on the mound and notched his eighth quality start of the campaign, but that wasn't enough to extend his undefeated streak to nine appearances due to the lack of run support. Darvish has been one of the most dominant pitchers in the National League this season, however, and he improved his ERA to a blistering 2.28 over 79 innings across 13 starts. His next start should be a tough one, however, as he lines up to face the Rockies on the road next week.
Jun 4, 2021
Picks up another win
Darvish (6-1) earned the win Thursday against the Mets after giving up two runs on four hits and a walk while fanning five across 5.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Darvish might have ended two outs away from posting a quality start, but that was because his pitch count had already reached 90 deliveries. The star hurler delivered another impressive outing but also contributed at the plate, as he went 2-for-2 with a double. Darvish, who improved his ERA to 2.25 on the year, lines up to face his former team, the Cubs, at home next week.
May 30, 2021
Unsteady against Houston
Darvish hurled five innings against the Astros on Saturday, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out five. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander kept Houston off the scoreboard for three innings, but he was tagged for two runs on a Carlos Correa homer in the fourth. Darvish then allowed three more runs in the fifth, though the final tally was unearned. The five total runs allowed were a season high for Darvish, who came into the contest having yielded no more than two runs in each of his past nine starts. In spite of the poor outing, he still owns fantastic numbers on the season, including a 2.16 ERA and 79:16 K:BB across 66.2 innings. Darvish lines up to face the Mets at home next weekend.
May 23, 2021
Stymies Seattle over seven innings
Darvish (5-1) beat Seattle Sunday, allowing one run on seven hits with five strikeouts in seven innings in a 9-2 win.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was engaged in a pitcher's duel with opposing starter Justin Dunn, who actually accounted for the one run Darvish surrendered, until San Diego broke the game open with four runs apiece in the sixth and seventh innings. He's been supremely dominant since opening day, allowing no more than two runs in each of the ensuing eight starts to the tune of a sparkling 1.75 ERA.
May 18, 2021
Dominant against Rockies
Darvish (4-1) earned the win Monday against the Rockies after tossing seven scoreless innings, giving up four hits and fanning 10.
ANALYSIS
Darvish has looked absolutely dominant this season and he's now tossed two straight scoreless outings. In fact, he's allowed one or fewer runs in all but two of his starts in 2021 and owns a sterling 1.81 ERA across 54.2 innings this season. His next start is scheduled for the upcoming weekend series against the Mariners at home.
May 12, 2021
Labors through four innings
Darvish allowed an unearned run on two hits and a walk with one strikeout in a no-decision versus Colorado on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Darvish needed 76 pitches (48 strikes) to get through four innings before Emilio Pagan relieved him to start the fifth. It was the shortest of Darvish's eight starts this season. The 34-year-old has allowed two or fewer runs in his last seven outings, pitching to a 2.08 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 59:13 K:BB across 47.2 innings overall. He lines up for a rematch with Colorado next week.
May 10, 2021
Starting Wednesday
Darvish will start Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Rockies, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was initially expected to start Tuesday's contest, but he'll now start the first game of a twin bill after Monday's series opener was postponed. Dinelson Lamet will take the mound for Tuesday's matchup against Colorado.
May 6, 2021
Fans eight in no-decision
Darvish allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while fanning eight across 5.2 innings Wednesday against the Pirates. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Darvish ended just one out away from posting what would've been his sixth straight quality start, and the right-hander continues to pitch at a stellar level in 2021 -- he has given up just 11 runs across 43.2 innings while posting a 57:12 K:BB thus far. Darvish will try to extend this sizzling run next week, as he's slated to take the ball next week against Colorado on the road.
May 1, 2021
Masterful in 12-strikeout outing
Darvish (3-1) earned the win over San Francisco on Friday, pitching 6.1 innings and allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out 12.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander was on his game against a surprising Giants squad, giving up only one run on a first-inning homer. Darvish set a season high with 12 strikeouts in the victory and induced 16 swings-and-misses. Since a rough outing in the season opener against Arizona, Darvish has hurled five straight quality starts, posting a 1.35 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 43:10 K:BB over 33.1 innings during that stretch. He is projected to next take the mound Wednesday at home against Pittsburgh.
Apr 24, 2021
Picks up win No. 2
Darvish (2-1) allowed one run on four hits and three walks while striking out nine batters over seven innings as he picked up the win against the Dodgers on Friday.
ANALYSIS
The Dodgers got to Darvish early, as Mookie Betts led off the bottom half of the first with a double before eventually coming around to score on a RBI single to right center by Max Muncy. The 34-year-old settled in thereafter and kept the Dodgers off the scoreboard but did appear to have some control issues, as he issued five free passes (three walks and two hit batters). Regardless, Darvish allowed exactly one earned run for the fourth consecutive outing and has found a nice groove after getting roughed up by the Diamondbacks in the season-opener. He'll take a 2.27 ERA and 37:8 K:BB into his next scheduled start against the Giants on Friday.
Apr 18, 2021
Records quality start in loss
Darvish (1-1) allowed one earned run on one hit and walked two while striking out nine over seven innings of work in a loss to the Dodgers on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
The righty was phenomenal as he threw 68 of his 98 pitches for strikes and his sole mistake came on walking opposing pitcher Clayton Kershaw in the fifth inning. Darvish hasn't skipped a beat since being traded to San Diego, holding a 2.55 ERA on the year and his next chance to take the rubber will be on Friday against the Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw again.
Apr 12, 2021
Fans six in win
Darvish (1-0) allowed one run on three hits and a walk over seven innings Monday, striking out six and picking up a won over the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Darvish earned his first win as a Padre by taking care of the Pirates with relative ease Monday. He tossed 63-of-95 pitches for strikes and retiring 13 of the final 14 batters he faced. The lone run he yielded came from a Phillip Evans double in the third innings. The 34-year-old will face his toughest test of the season at home against the Dodgers on Saturday.
Apr 7, 2021
Bounces back with solid performance
Darvish allowed one run on three hits and a walk while striking out seven across six innings Tuesday against the Giants. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Darvish bounced back from a rough opening day outing by firing six strong innings. His only blemish on the evening was surrendering a solo home run to Brandon Crawford in the third as he otherwise held the Giants to a couple of singles. The Padres unfortunately weren't able to give him much run support so he was unable to qualify for the win, however, he should have a good chance for another dominant performance in the series opener against the Pirates on Monday.
Apr 1, 2021
Burned by long ball
Darvish allowed four earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out six across 4.2 innings Thursday against the Diamondbacks. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Darvish allowed three singles and an earned run in the first inning, but then held the Diamondbacks scoreless for the next four frames. However, his outing was derailed in his final inning of work when he allowed one solo and one two-run home run. Darvish also induced only nine swinging strikes on 93 total pitches. While he likely just experienced an Opening Day hiccup, Darvish will look to bounce back in his second start of the campaign Tuesday against the Giants.
Mar 25, 2021
Named Opening Day starter
Darvish has been named the Opening Day starter for the Padres, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish finished second in NL Cy Young voting with the Cubs in 2020 and had a strong spring showing. He tossed five scoreless innings while striking out seven in two Cactus League starts and will take the mound for the Padres against Arizona on April 1 as a result.
Mar 15, 2021
Dominant in second spring outing
Darvish hurled three scoreless and hitless innings Sunday in a Cactus League contest versus Cincinnati. He struck out three batters.
ANALYSIS
The only baserunner Darvish allowed in the sharp appearance came on a hit batsman in the third inning. The veteran right-hander is making a strong case for Opening Day pitching honors -- he has held opponents scoreless while striking out seven across five innings through two spring starts.
Mar 8, 2021
Sharp in first spring start
Darvish tossed two scoreless innings against Kansas City in a Cactus League contest Sunday, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out four.
ANALYSIS
Darvish made quite a first impression in his first outing as a Padre, working around a single to strike out the side in the first inning. He then retired the first two batters he faced in the second before finishing his appearance with another strikeout. San Diego has yet to name its Opening Day starter, but Darvish figures to be the early favorite for the honor given his dominant campaign in 2020.
Mar 4, 2021
Spring debut coming Sunday
Darvish is slated to make his Padres debut in Sunday's Cactus League game against the Royals, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
The Padres deliberately kept Darvish off their pitching schedule early in the Cactus League slate, with the reigning National League Cy Young runner-up instead having been limited to facing hitters in live batting practice and simulated games. Darvish still remains on track to handle a normal starter's workload by the start of the regular season, though manager Jayce Tingler has yet to say whether the 34-year-old would receiving the April 1 Opening Day nod versus the Diamondbacks. Coming off an abbreviated 2020 campaign with the Cubs in which he posted a 2.01 ERA and 0.96 WHIP to go with 93 strikeouts in 76 innings, Darvish looks like a safe top-10 selection among pitchers in fantasy drafts.
Dec 28, 2020
Officially traded to Padres
Darvish has been traded to the Padres along with Victor Caratini in exchange for Zach Davies and prospects, Reginald Preciado, Owen Caissie, Yeison Santana and Ismael Mena, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish is coming off a very strong season in which he went 8-3 while posting a 2.01 ERA and 0.96 WHIP across 76 innings for the Cubs. He now heads west to join a Padres team that continues to focus on bolstering their starting pitching staff. The right-hander will settle in alongside Blake Snell, who was acquired from the Rays on Sunday, atop the Padres rotation.
Oct 3, 2020
Gives up two runs Friday
Darvish allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six over 6.2 innings as he was charged with the loss Friday in Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Darvish began Friday's contest with six scoreless innings, but he was unable to get any run support from the Cubs' offense. As a result, the two runs that Darvish allowed in the seventh inning proved to be the difference as the Marlins completed the sweep to advance to the NLDS. The right-hander made a strong case for the NL Cy Young Award during the abbreviated regular season as he posted a career-best 2.01 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 93:14 K:BB over 76 innings across 12 starts.
Sep 26, 2020
Cruises to eighth victory
Darvish (8-3) tossed seven scoreless innings to pick up the win Friday against the White Sox. He allowed just three hits and a walk, while striking out five.
ANALYSIS
Making his final start of the 2020 regular season, Darvish left a good taste in the mouths of Cy Young voters. The 34-year-old righty finishes the year with a 2.01 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 93 strikeouts across 76 innings. While it was an abbreviated campaign, it was the best he's looked since coming to Chicago in 2018. Darvish will now turn his attention to the playoffs, and he'll start one of the first two games of the first round, with Kyle Hendricks getting another rotation spot and then possibly Jon Lester in a potential Game 3.
Sep 20, 2020
Allows four runs in loss
Darvish (7-3) allowed four earned runs on nine hits across six innings to take the loss Sunday against the Twins. He struck out nine and walked one.
ANALYSIS
Darvish had only allowed two runs when he came out for the seventh inning, but he quickly gave up a double followed by a two-run home run by Max Kepler to get chased from the game. The righty hasn't been as sharp lately, as he's now allowed nine hits in each of his last two outings. Darvish is still squarely in the Cy Young race, though his recent performance could be hurting his chances in a crowded field. He'll take a 2.22 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 88:13 K:BB across 69 innings into his final start of the regular season, which is scheduled for Friday against the White Sox.
Sep 16, 2020
Throws seven innings
Darvish allowed three earned runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out seven across seven innings Tuesday against Cleveland. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Darvish surrendered a season-worst nine hits but still managed to last seven frames and turn in a quality start. He also maintained his control -- 77 of his 100 total pitches went for strikes -- so it appears he was just missing some feel for his pitches. For the season, Darvish still has a stellar 2.00 ERA with a 0.94 WHIP while maintaining a 79:12 K:BB across 63 innings. He currently lines up to take his next turn through the rotation Sunday against Minnesota.
Sep 9, 2020
Pitches well but takes loss
Darvish (7-2) allowed three earned runs across six innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Reds. He gave up two hits and three walks, while striking out nine.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was good but starting pitcher counterpart Trevor Bauer was better, as the latter combined with two relievers to shut out the Cubs. This was the first time in his last eight starts that Darvish has allowed more than a single earned run, and the Japanese righty still has a sparkling 1.77 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 72:11 K:BB through 56 innings this season. Those numbers put Darvish squarely in the National League Cy Young race, and he'll look to keep up the strong work in his next outing, which is scheduled for Tuesday against Cleveland.
Sep 4, 2020
Spins gem versus Cardinals
Darvish (7-1) allowed one run on one hit and struck out 11 over seven innings in a win over the Cardinals on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was once again absolutely dominant, with the only mistake being Matt Carpenter's solo home run in the sixth inning. Over his last seven starts -- all wins -- Darvish hasn't allowed more than a run in each outing. He's also recorded double-digit strikeouts three times in that span. He's got a 1.44 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 63:8 K:BB through 50 innings this season. The right-hander's next start is expected to be at home Wednesday versus the Reds.
Aug 30, 2020
Dominates Reds for sixth win
Darvish (6-1) gave up seven hits and two walks over six scoreless innings Saturday to pick up the win in the first game of a doubleheader against the Reds. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
The Cubs defense turned two double plays behind him, but Darvish didn't need much help in carving up the Cincy lineup. The right-hander now boasts a 1.47 ERA to go along with his NL-leading six wins, and he stands a good chance of adding to that total in his next outing Thursday, on the road against the woeful Pirates.

Earns fifth win
Darvish (5-1) allowed one earned run on six hits and one walk while striking out 10 across seven innings to earn the win Sunday against the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Darvish tamed a hot White Sox lineup, allowing only a solo home run to Jose Abreu in the second inning. He otherwise dominated, generating 26 swinging strikes on 103 total pitches while surrendering no other extra-base hits. Darvish is in the midst of a dominant campaign, as he has allowed no more than one earned run in five of his six starts. Overall, he's maintained a 1.70 ERA with a 44:6 K:BB ratio across 37 innings. He lines up for his next outing Saturday at Cincinnati.

Picks up fourth win
Darvish earned the win over St. Louis on Tuesday, pitching six innings and allowing one run on eight hits and one walk while striking out seven.
ANALYSIS
Darvish allowed at least one hit in all but one of his innings, but he was able to limit the Cardinals to one run by inducing two double plays and yielding only one extra-base knock. The quality start was the fourth in a row for Darvish, each of which has resulted in a win. He has allowed only three runs in 26 innings during that span, lowering his season ERA to a pristine 1.80. The right-hander is next projected to start at home against the White Sox on Sunday.

Dominates Milwaukee Thursday
Darvish (3-1) earned the win Thursday over the Brewers with seven innings of one-run ball. He allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out 11.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was in cruise control and had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning. Justin Smoak ruined Darvish's no-hit and shutout bids with a solo home run, but it was still a dominating effort for the righty, who has now earned the win in his last three outings. Darvish will take a 1.88 ERA and 27:4 K:BB across 24 innings into his next start, which is scheduled for Tuesday against St. Louis, though the Cardinals haven't played since July 29 due to a coronavirus outbreak within the organization. If Darvish gets pushed back, he'll likely pitch against the White Sox sometime next weekend.

Improves to 2-1
Darvish (2-1) allowed one run on five hits and one walk while striking out four over seven innings in a win over the Royals on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Darvish made his layup in Kansas City, as he did last week at home against Pittsburgh. He does not have a big strikeout game yet this season, but Darvish has issued only two walks in 17 innings which is a very encouraging sign. The right-hander tightened up his control down the stretch last year and was one of the best pitchers in the game after an ugly first half of 2019. Darvish lines up for a road start in Cleveland in the first of two starts next week.

Earns first win of season
Darvish (1-1) earned the win in Friday's contest against the Pirates. He tossed six scoreless innings, giving up two hits and one walk while fanning seven.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was coming off a less-than-stellar debut against the Brewers, but he bounced back admirably in this one -- he limited the Pirates to just three baserunners across six frames. Darvish will attempt to build off this performance ahead of his next start, scheduled for Aug. 5 at Kansas City.

Start pushed to Friday
Darvish will start Friday's game against the Pirates after his scheduled start against the Reds was postponed due to rain Thursday, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was set to face-off against Luis Castillo on Thursday evening, but with rain impeding, the right-hander will instead pitch in Chicago against the Pirates on Friday. Darvish will look to bounce back from a a less than stellar season debut in which he allowed three runs in just four innings of work against Milwaukee.

Takes loss in season debut
Darvish (0-1) took the loss Saturday against the Brewers, allowing three earned runs on six hits across four innings. He struck out five and did not issue any walks.
ANALYSIS
Darvish only threw 73 pitches in the outing, but manager David Ross elected to take it easy on the righty in his first start of the season. It was an uneven performance for Darvish, who started off slow in 2019 before posting a 3.58 ERA and 0.92 WHIP over his final 24 starts. He should be able to increase his pitch count and hopefully go deeper into the game his next time out, which is slated for Thursday on the road against the Reds.

Starting second game
Darvish will start Chicago's second game of the season against the Brewers, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish will follow Kyle Hendricks in the rotation. The right-hander posted a 3.58 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 192:29 K:BB over his final 24 starts (146 innings) in 2019 and will look to carry that form into the abbreviated 2020 season.

Allows two runs in scrimmage
Darvish allowed two runs across 3.2 innings in Tuesday's intrasquad game, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. He gave up two hits and two walks, to go along with three strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Probably the most important thing here is that Darvish threw 60 pitches, so he seems to be ramping up well toward the start of the regular season. There are 10 days until Opening Day for the Cubs, so throwing Tuesday puts Darvish in line for that assignment, though Kyle Hendricks also pitched in Tuesday's scrimmage and could get the nod for the opener. Manager David Ross has yet to make a formal announcement on that front, but it's expected that Darvish and Hendricks will lead the rotation in some order with Jon Lester slotted in third.

Pitches in intrasquad game
Darvish tossed two scoreless innings during an intrasquad game Saturday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish matched up with Kyle Hendricks, who is competing with the Japanese righty to start Opening Day. Darvish is more likely to get that nod, and it was good to see him pitch multiple innings in a scrimmage with no issue. He'll continue to participate in summer camp at Wrigley Field until the abbreviated 2020 season starts later this month.

Likely Opening Day starter
Darvish is the likely Opening Day starter, but Chicago manager David Ross is also considering Jon Lester and Kyle Hendricks, Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reports.
ANALYSIS
Realistically, the competition is between Darvish and Hendricks, with Lester's name in the mix out of respect to the veteran's track record. Darvish started to look like an ace down the stretch last year, and with the amount the Cubs are paying the Japanese righty, they have every incentive to make him their No. 1 starter for the abbreviated 2020 season.

Competing to start Opening Day
Darvish is competing with Kyle Hendricks to start Chicago's regular season opener against the Brewers, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chicago manager David Ross is not ready to commit to an Opening Day starter this early in spring training. Darvish will be making his first Cactus League start Wednesday against the Padres after battling an illness early in camp. The 33-year-old posted a 3.98 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and accumulated 229 strikeouts across 178.2 innings (31 starts) for the Cubs in 2019.

Set to start Wednesday
Darvish (illness) will start Wednesday against the Padres, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish has made just one appearance this spring, as his scheduled start Thursday against the Rangers was canceled due to the flu. He pitched in a simulated game the next day, however, and is set for Cactus League action Wednesday, so he should still be fine for the start of the regular season.
Mar 5, 2020
Scheduled for three innings Friday
Darvish (illness) is expected to pitch three innings Friday, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was scratched from his scheduled start Thursday against the Rangers due to flu-like symptoms, though he's apparently already feeling better. It's not yet clear whether Darvish will pitch in a Cactus League game or throw a simulated game.

Comes down with flu
Darvish was scratched ahead of his scheduled start Thursday against the Rangers due to flu-like symptoms, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
The Cubs also scratched second baseman Jason Kipnis due to a case of the flu, so a bug may be passing around the clubhouse. Though Darvish will miss out on a spring start against one of his former teams, the illness isn't expected to keep him out of camp for more than a few days.

Could start Opening Day
Darvish, who is slated to make his spring training debut, is a likely candidate to start Opening Day, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
After Darvish pitches in a Cactus League game Saturday, he'll line up well for the March 26 opener in Milwaukee. The Japanese righty struggled early in 2019 but finished the season with a flourish, and he could be ready to truly serve as the ace the Cubs thought they were getting when they doled out $126 million a few years ago, assuming he stays healthy.
Feb 16, 2020
Feels healthy to begin spring
Darvish said he feels healthier this spring compared to last year, when he was dealing with a triceps issue, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish's 2019 stats support his claim that he wasn't fully healthy to begin the year, as he had an ERA above 5.00 in each of the first two months of the season. The Japanese righty looked a little bit better in June but really took off in July with a 2.93 ERA across 30.2 innings. Darvish finished the year with a 3.98 ERA overall and 229 strikeouts across 178.2 innings, and if he's healthier to start 2020, he could get off to a stronger start.

Confirmed for Saturday's start
The Cubs are listing Darvish (forearm) as their starting pitcher for Saturday's game in Milwaukee.
ANALYSIS
Darvish was a late scratch ahead of his previously scheduled home start versus the Brewers over the weekend after experiencing forearm tightness, but manager Joe Maddon indicated that the injury wasn't anything serious. Per Jordan Bastian of MLB.com, Maddon offered similar sentiments regarding Darvish's injury earlier this week, so the right-hander will be on track to re-enter the rotation when a fifth starter is required again Saturday. Before missing his last turn, Darvish had been the Cubs' most productive rotation member since the All-Star break, posting a 2.93 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 11.7 K/9 in nine outings.

Scratched with forearm tightness
Darvish was scratched from Sunday's start versus the Brewers with right forearm tightness, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Darvish is only expected to miss the one start as the team plans for him to take the mound Saturday at Milwaukee. According to Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com, the 33-year-old has been battling the issue over the last month. Tyler Chatwood will start Sunday in his place.
