Not starting Saturday
Neto isn't in the Angels' lineup Saturday against Minnesota, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto is slashing just .122/.217/.220 across his last 10 games, so he'll get a day off to regroup after striking out three times Friday. David Fletcher will take over at shortstop and bat ninth.
Sep 20, 2023
Homers in homecoming
Neto went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 6-2 loss against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Neto, a Miami native, launched a game-tying solo shot in the eighth inning of his return to the Sunshine State. However, the excitement was short-lived, as Tampa Bay answered with a four-run eighth inning to put the game out of reach. After missing more than five weeks with a back injury, the 22-year-old shortstop has gone just 2-for-27 (.074) with eight strikeouts and four walks in seven contests. Neto owns a season-long slash line of .223/.301/.386 with nine home runs, 31 RBI, 33 runs and five steals across 74 games in his rookie campaign.
Sep 17, 2023
Late addition to lineup
Neto is starting at shortstop and batting ninth Sunday against the Tigers, Sarah Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The 22-year-old was scheduled to sit Sunday but will end up starting after Kyren Paris (undisclosed) was scratched from the lineup. Neto is 1-for-20 with three walks, a run and eight strikeouts in five games since he returned from the injured list.
Sep 17, 2023
Not starting Sunday
Neto is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto is 1-for-20 with three walks, a run and eight strikeouts since being activated from the injured list last weekend, so he'll take a seat for Sunday's series finale. David Fletcher will work at shortstop and bat second.
Sep 10, 2023
Reinstated, not starting Sunday
Neto (back) was activated from the 10-day injured list but is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
The 22-year-old has been sidelined since Aug. 3 due to a back injury, but he'll rejoin the active roster after a four-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Salt Lake. Neto should work as the Halos' primary shortstop down the stretch, though it's Kyren Paris starting Sunday's series finale versus Cleveland.
Sep 7, 2023
Eyeing return next week
Angels manager Phil Nevin said Wednesday that Neto (back) will remain on his rehab assignment at Triple-A Salt Lake through Saturday before being re-evaluated, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto could be activated from the 10-day injured list ahead of Sunday's series finale versus the Guardians if the Angels' training staff is satisfied with his health upon re-evaluating him, but it's more likely that the shortstop returns to the Anaheim lineup early next week. The 22-year-old has gone 2-for-5 with a solo home run and a walk through the first two games of his rehab assignment and will have off Thursday before returning to the Salt Lake lineup Friday and Saturday. Once activated, Neto should take back the reins as the Halos' everyday shortstop while rookie Kyren Paris fades into more a utility role or gets optioned back to Triple-A.
Sep 4, 2023
Rehab assignment Tuesday
Neto (back) will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Salt Lake, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto will need a brief rehab assignment, as he has been out since Aug. 3 with the back injury, but it's possible he will be back later this week. Once activated, he should assume the everyday shortstop duties, at which point Kyren Paris may head back to the minor leagues.
Sep 2, 2023
Approaching rehab assignment
Angels manager Phil Nevin said Friday that Neto (back) hasn't experienced any setbacks since going on the injured list and is expected to begin a rehab stint during the week of Sept. 5, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto has been on the shelf since Aug. 4 after dealing with back trouble for several weeks. He's progressed to participating in all on-field activities except hitting during warmups, though he's been taking swings in an indoor batting cage. Nevin indicated that Neto is pain-free, and as long as his upcoming rehab assignment goes off without a hitch, the rookie shortstop should be able to return to the major-league club in time to log several more weeks of action before the end of the regular season.
Aug 27, 2023
Doing on-field work
Neto (back) resumed baseball activities in New York on Aug. 25, per MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
Neto is reportedly pain-free after going on the injured list in early August due to lower-back discomfort. The rookie shortstop was originally slated to start up baseball activities during the Angels' last homestand but had that plan pushed back a few days for unspecified reasons. Neto will likely need a minor-league rehab stint before being activated, so he's probably still a couple weeks away from a return.
Aug 17, 2023
Likely to resume activity soon
Neto (back) is reportedly pain-free and is expected to return to baseball activities as soon as Friday, per MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
Neto landed on the injured list with a back injury Aug. 4 and hasn't taken part in baseball activities since. He was diagnosed with inflammation but has subsequently make progress toward a recovery. Neto is expected back before the end of the campaign, though he may still be several weeks away from a return.
Aug 8, 2023
Likely out several weeks
Angels manager Phil Nevin said Tuesday that Neto (back) will be out for several weeks, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto was placed on the 10-day injured list last Friday due to lower-back discomfort and further testing has revealed a bad case of inflammation. Luis Rengifo will continue to serve as the Angels' primary shortstop in his absence, which is now expected to extend through at least mid-September.
Aug 4, 2023
Placed on IL with back issue
Neto was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with lower-back discomfort, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto has been bothered by back trouble for the last two weeks and is finally going to be shut down for an extended period. There is currently no timetable for his return. Luis Rengifo is starting at shortstop and batting leadoff for the Angels on Friday night against the Mariners.
Jul 31, 2023
Hitting eighth Monday
Neto (back) is starting at shortstop and batting eighth Monday in Atlanta, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports.
ANALYSIS
This recent back issue has bothered Neto dating back to July 22 when he was first scratched, and he has appeared in four games since then without going on the injured list. Neto is hitting .216 with two home runs and 13 strikeouts in 11 games this month.
Jul 30, 2023
Still out Sunday
Neto (back) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Blue Jays, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto will be relegated to the bench for the seventh time in eight games while he continues to manage a stiff back. Luis Rengifo will once again serve as the Angels' leadoff man in the rookie's stead, while Andrew Velazquez fills in for Neto at shortstop.
Jul 29, 2023
Remains out Saturday
Neto (back) isn't in the Angels' lineup Saturday against Toronto, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto was scratched from Friday's lineup due to back stiffness, and the issue will keep him out for at least one more game Saturday. Luis Rengifo will fill in at shortstop, allowing Michael Stefanic to start at second base and bat ninth.
Jul 28, 2023
Scratched with stiff back
Neto was scratched from the lineup Friday versus the Blue Jays due to renewed back stiffness, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Andrew Velazquez will play shortstop and bat ninth for the Angels as Neto continues to struggle through a back issue that first popped up last weekend. He is again being considered day-to-day.
Jul 27, 2023
Returns to lineup
Neto (back) is starting at shortstop and batting leadoff in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader versus the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
Neto sat out the first contest of the double dip, which was his third straight game missed with a back problem. The rookie shortstop is doing much better, though, and will serve as a table setter as the Angels go for a doubleheader sweep.
Jul 27, 2023
Expected back for second game
Neto (back) remains out of the lineup for the first game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
It will be the third straight game Neto has missed due to a back issue, but Angels manager Phil Nevin expects the rookie to be ready to go for the second game, per MLB.com. Andrew Velazquez is getting the start at shortstop for the first game.
Jul 25, 2023
Scratched from lineup
Neto (back) was scratched from the Angels' lineup Tuesday, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
He had been slated to return to action following a two-game absence with a back issue, but manager Phil Nevin decided to give the rookie one more day. Neto is expected back Wednesday Andrew Velazquez will enter the lineup at shortstop and Luis Rengifo will move up to the leadoff spot.
Jul 25, 2023
Back in action Tuesday
Neto (back) is playing shortstop and batting leadoff in his return to the lineup Tuesday in Detroit, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto missed Saturday's and Sunday's games versus the Pirates due to lower-back tightness but is ready to go following Monday's off day. The rookie shortstop has slugged two home runs in seven games since the All-Star break.
Jul 23, 2023
Likely out until Tuesday
Neto (back) isn't expected to return to the Angels' lineup until Tuesday, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto was scratched from Saturday's game against the Pirates due to lower-back tightness and will also be held out of Sunday's series finale, but the young shortstop should be ready to rock following Monday's scheduled team off day. Andrew Velasquez got the start at short in Saturday's loss to Pittsburgh and went 0-for-2 with a strikeout.
Jul 22, 2023
Scratched with tight back
Neto was scratched from the lineup Saturday against the Pirates due to lower-back tightness, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
It sounds like a day-to-day type of issue for Neto, who slugged a solo homer in the Angels' defeat of Pittsburgh on Friday. The 22-year-old shortstop is batting .252/.328/.432 with eight home runs and five stolen bases through his first 62 major-league games.
Jul 22, 2023
Hits eighth homer
Neto went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 8-5 win over the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Neto extended his hitting streak to six games with his fifth-inning blast. In that span, he's gone 7-for-27 (.259) with two homers and four RBI. The shortstop has hit leadoff in every game since the All-Star break, and the results are solid so far. He's at a .252/.328/.432 slash line with eight long balls, 27 RBI, 30 runs scored and five stolen bases through 62 contests this season.
Jul 16, 2023
Pops homer in win
Neto went 1-for-6 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 13-12 extra-inning win over the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Neto sparked one of the Angels' comebacks, going deep in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to four runs. The shortstop went 0-for-5 on Friday in his return from a month-long absence with an oblique injury. He should resume a starting role at shortstop at the expense of Luis Rengifo and Andrew Velazquez's playing time. Neto is slashing .249/.325/.427 with seven homers, 25 RBI, 25 runs scored and five stolen bases through 57 contests. Most interestingly, he's hit leadoff in the last two games and could stick atop the lineup for a while if his bat heats up.
Jul 15, 2023
Hitless in return
Neto went 0-for-5 with an RBI in a loss to the Astros on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Neto returned from a one-month stay on the injured list and batted leadoff for Los Angeles. He wasn't able to reach base but did drive in a run on a second-inning groundout. Neto had been hitting at the bottom of the order prior to getting hurt, so it remains to be seen if he'll stick in the leadoff spot moving forward.
Jul 14, 2023
Activated, leading off Friday
Neto (oblique) is starting at shortstop and leading off Friday against the Astros, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto ends up missing exactly a month with the oblique strain. He hit .355 with three home runs and two steals in 12 June games, and the fact he is back atop the lineup is a good sign for his role going forward.
Jul 7, 2023
Set for live batting practice
Neto (oblique) is scheduled to take live batting practice Saturday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto was shut down for a couple of weeks after he landed on the inured list June 15 due to a left oblique strain, but he has responded well to a recent uptick in baseball activities and could return to the Angels' active roster immediately after the All-Star break.
Jul 3, 2023
Continuing to ramp up activities
Neto played catch and is expected to hit off a tee Monday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto is continuing to ramp up his baseball activities, and Bollinger adds that the shortstop could be activated soon after the break if all goes according to plan. He's been on the 10-day injured list since June 15 due to a left oblique strain and will likely head out on a rehab assignment shortly.
Jul 1, 2023
Doing fielding work
Neto (oblique) took grounders on the field prior to Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks, Sarah Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto has been sidelined since June 15, and his activity Saturday is his most strenuous since he was sidelined. There is still no timetable for his return, making it very likely that his activation from the injured list will come after the All-Star break.
Jul 1, 2023
Still not doing baseball activities
Neto (oblique) did not resume baseball activities Friday as previously expected, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto indicated early in the week that he is no longer experiencing pain or discomfort and said that he was planning to resume baseball activities Friday. However, that plan did not come to pass, and the Angels now hope that the rookie shortstop can instead get back to such activities Sunday or Monday. Manager Phil Nevin suggested that Neto's ramp-up should not take long, so there's still a chance he can return to action by the end of next week.
Jun 26, 2023
Nearing baseball activities
Neto (oblique) said he's planning to resume baseball activities Friday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto will be limited to light throwing at first before he then begins to incorporate a range of other drills. The young shortstop has been brought along slowly in his recovery from a left oblique strain, which sent him to the injured list June 15. There is no exact timetable yet for his return to the Angels' active major-league roster.
Jun 20, 2023
No baseball activities yet
Neto (oblique) said Tuesday that he has yet to resume baseball activities, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto was placed on the 10-day injured list last Thursday with a left oblique strain and his absence from the Angels' active roster could very well extend into July. The light-hitting Andrew Velazquez continues to fill in at shortstop.
Jun 15, 2023
Lands on IL
The Angels placed Neto on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a left oblique strain.
ANALYSIS
Neto felt something in his side after making a warm-up throw in the first inning of Wednesday's game and had to be removed. The 22-year-old shortstop will now be shelved for at least 10 days, and Andrew Velazquez will be recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake to take Neto's place on the roster.
Jun 14, 2023
Battling side cramps
Neto was removed from Wednesday's game due to cramping in his left side.
ANALYSIS
The team described Neto's injury as a precaution, so it's likely he'll be able to return to the Angels' lineup without missing much time, if any. The 22-year-old shortstop is enjoying a nice four-game hit streak while slashing .467/.467/1.200 in that span.
Jun 14, 2023
Removed early Wednesday
Neto was removed from Wednesday's game against Texas for undisclosed reasons, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
Jared Walsh entered the game to pinch-hit for Neto in the second inning, and the Angels have yet to announce a reason for Neto's removal. The team should provide an update relatively soon, and Neto should be considered day-to-day until more is known.
Jun 14, 2023
Homers again Tuesday
Neto went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and two RBI in Tuesday's 7-3 win over the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Neto's 396-foot blast came in the ninth inning, giving him his second home run in three days and sixth on the season. The rookie has held his own so far, striking out at just a 21 percent clip while posting a respectable .259 average working as the near everyday shortstop for the Angels.
Jun 11, 2023
Belts two home runs
Neto went 2-for-4 with two solo homers and three runs scored in Sunday's win over Seattle.
ANALYSIS
Neto ripped a solo homer in the second and eighth innings, snapping a 14-game homerless drought. After ending May in a 1-for-19 skid, the rookie shortstop has gone 8-for-23 (.348) with a 4:5 BB:K and seven runs scored in June. He boosted his season slash line to .253/.337/.404 with 15 extra-base hits, five steals and 20 RBI through 190 plate appearances.
Jun 10, 2023
Walks twice, steals base
Neto went 0-for-1 with two walks and a stolen base in Friday's 5-4 win over the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Neto logged a steal for the second consecutive game, and he's drawn four walks over his last three contests. For the season, he's posted a modest 6.0 percent walk rate along with a 19.7 percent strikeout rate. The shortstop is still finding his way at the major-league level with a .239/.328/.358 slash line while adding three home runs, five steals, 18 RBI and 18 runs scored through his first 50 games.
Jun 9, 2023
Swipes fourth bag
Neto went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run and a stolen base in a 3-1 win against the Cubs on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Neto sat out Saturday's contest with a bruised foot, but he returned Sunday and started for the second straight game Thursday. The rookie reached base twice in the victory and also nabbed a theft in the sixth inning. Neto is slashing just .147/.286/.176 over his past 12 contests, but he continues to see near-everyday work as the Angels' primary shortstop.
Jun 6, 2023
Not starting Tuesday
Neto isn't starting Tuesday against the Cubs, Sarah Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto is slashing just .118/.167/.118 over the past week, so he'll sit out for the second time in three games. Luis Rengifo will take Neto's place at shortstop and bat ninth Tuesday.
Jun 5, 2023
Hitless in return
Neto (foot) went 0-for-3 with a run scored in his return to the lineup Sunday against the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Neto did not play Saturday due to a bruised left foot after he was hit by a pitch. The 22-year-old was back in the lineup Sunday and slotted in as the team's ninth hitter. He reached via a fielder's choice in the eighth and wound up scoring the winning run after Shohei Ohtani doubled to bring him home. Neto has shown flashes of potential at the plate as a youngster, but has cooled off lately, slashing just .111/.242/.148 with one RBI and a run scored over his last nine games.
Jun 4, 2023
Returns to lineup Sunday
Neto (foot) is playing shortstop and hitting ninth versus Houston on Sunday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto sat out Saturday's game against Houston after being removed from Friday's contest with a bruise on his left foot, but the rookie shortstop is good to go Sunday for the series finale against the Astros.
Jun 3, 2023
Out with bruised foot
Neto (foot) is not in the starting lineup Saturday versus the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Neto was removed from Friday night's game in Houston after taking a pitch off his left foot. X-rays came back negative and he is considered day-to-day. Livan Soto will play shortstop and bat ninth for the Angels on Saturday.
Jun 2, 2023
X-rays return negative
X-rays returned negative on Neto's left foot after he exited Friday's game against the Astros, and he's considered day-to-day, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto was hit in the foot during Saturday's contest, and while he was initially able to continue, the rookie infielder eventually was replaced by Luis Rengifo. Blum believes it's possible that Neto may sit out Saturday's contest against Houston, but the positive news is that he appears to have avoided a serious injury.
Jun 2, 2023
Exits with foot soreness
Neto exited Friday's game against the Astros with left foot soreness, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. He went 0-for-1 while reaching via hit by pitch before leaving.
ANALYSIS
Neto was plunked in the left foot, and while he was initially able to continue in the contest, the rookie shortstop gave way not long after. Luis Rengifo has taken over at shortstop, and Neto should be considered day-to-day at this stage.
May 28, 2023
Hits bench Sunday
Neto is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
After going hitless with a walk and a stolen base in Saturday's 8-5 loss, Neto will hit the bench in the series finale. Livan Soto will step in at shortstop for the rookie, who slashed .271/.323/.508 with eight extra-base hits over a stretch of 18 consecutive starts dating back to May 8.
May 28, 2023
Steals base in extra-inning loss
Neto went 0-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Saturday's 8-5 extra-inning loss to the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Neto went hitless for a second straight game, marking just the fourth time he's done that in the majors. He's yet to have a slump last more than two games, and he was able to salvage some fantasy value Saturday with his third steal of the campaign. The top prospect is slashing .252/.327/.389 with three home runs, 17 RBI and 15 runs scored through 39 contests while seeing a near-everyday role at shortstop thanks to a fairly consistent bat.
May 25, 2023
Clubs third homer
Neto went 3-for-3 with a double, a homer, three RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday's win over the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Neto crushed a first-pitch fastball 417 feet to plate three runs in the second inning on his way to the first three-hit game of his career. The rookie shortstop has popped three homers in May after failing to connect on a big fly in April. Neto slashed .322/.408/.529 in 201 plate appearances in his brief minor league career. After his best game of the season he is up to .266/.333/.411 in the majors.
May 14, 2023
Belts second homer
Neto went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Saturday's loss to Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Neto's two-run smash in the top of the eighth inning gave Los Angeles what looked to be a secure 6-2 lead, but the Guardians rallied with six runs in the bottom of the frame to steal a victory. The long ball was the second of the campaign for Neto, though both have come in his past four contests. The rookie is holding his own as the Angels' primary shortstop, slashing .247/.323/.371 with a solid 16.2 percent strikeout rate, though he's drawn just three walks over 99 plate appearances.
May 10, 2023
Cranks first-career homer
Neto went 1-for-3 with a homer in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Neto drilled a sinker from Framber Valdez over the right-field wall for his first big fly in the majors. The rookie produced the only offense of the night for Angels, as they couldn't give Shohei Ohtani significant run support in a pitcher's duel. Neto has a .663 OPS in his first 78 at bats.
May 8, 2023
Returns to lineup
Neto is hitting ninth and playing shortstop in Monday's contest against the Astros, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto took Sunday off and dealt with a bruised finger in the middle of last week. The rookie shortstop will bat at the bottom of the lineup with Taylor Ward grabbing the top spot while playing left field.
May 7, 2023
Gets breather Sunday
Neto is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rangers, Sarah Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Times reports.
ANALYSIS
After exiting Wednesday's 6-4 win over the Cardinals with a bruised finger on his right hand, Neto proceeded to start at shortstop in each of the next three games while going 1-for-12 with two walks, two RBI and a run scored. Though Neto will take a seat for the series finale, Angels manager Phil Nevin is labeling the rookie's absence as more of a rest day rather than a setback, per Valenzuela. The day off should allow Neto's bruised finger to heal a little more before he likely returns to action Monday against the Astros.
May 7, 2023
Potential day off Sunday
Neto (finger) is expected to get a day off Sunday versus the Rangers, Sarah Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and a walk in Saturday's loss to the Rangers, starting a third straight game with a bruised finger. Manager Phil Nevin said after the game that he wants to give Neto a day off Sunday, leaving Gio Urshela and Luis Rengifo as options that could see a start at shortstop in the series finale with Texas.
May 4, 2023
In lineup Thursday
Neto (finger) is in the Angels' lineup for Thursday's game versus the Cardinals, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto had to leave Wednesday's game when a finger got hit during a bunt attempt, but he's ready to roll a day later. He will bat leadoff and play shortstop against Jack Flaherty.
May 4, 2023
Reports improvement
Neto (finger) said in an interview on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM on Thursday that he "woke up this morning feeling like a brand new person."
ANALYSIS
It doesn't necessarily mean Neto will be ready to return to the lineup Thursday in St. Louis, but certainly it's a good sign that he should be back soon. Neto suffered a right finger contusion on a bunt attempt Wednesday.
May 3, 2023
Day-to-day with finger contusion
Neto suffered a right finger contusion Wednesday against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Neto was pulled from Wednesday's game after taking a pitch to the finger on a bunt attempt. Luckily, he seems to have avoided a serious injury and will likely return to the Angels' lineup within a few days.
May 3, 2023
Pulled with apparent injury
Neto was pulled from Wednesday's game against St. Louis after suffering an apparent injury, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
Neto appeared to take a pitch to his right hand on a bunt attempt during the fifth inning. He remained in the game to finish his at-bat, but was pulled before the bottom of the frame. He should be considered day-to-day until more information is available.
May 3, 2023
Two hits in leadoff spot
Neto wet 2-for-5 with an RBI in Tuesday's 5-1 win over the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Neto singled home a run in the sixth to pad the Angels' lead to 5-1. The 22-year-old is beginning to settle in as the leadoff man for the Halos after starting his third consecutive game in the one spot. He has two hits in three of his last four games and is now slashing .263/.354/.333 with five RBI, four runs and a 1:10 BB:K over 65 plate appearances.
May 1, 2023
Notches first MLB steal
Neto went 0-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in a 3-0 win against the Brewers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Neto started at shortstop and batted out of the leadoff spot for the second straight game. He failed to get a hit after going 4-for-7 over his previous two contests, but he was able to reach on a walk and swipe a bag in the first inning. Neto has shown good acumen on the basepaths in the minors, swiping eight bags on 10 attempts over 44 contests since joining the organization out of college.
Apr 29, 2023
Leading off against Burnes
Neto is leading off Saturday against Corbin Burnes and the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Taylor Ward, who has led off almost all season, is dropped down to seventh against the tough righty, while Neto ascends to the top of the lineup. The rookie shortstop has hit first in a couple games but has usually hit eighth or ninth. Neto is hitting .244/.333/.333 with zero home runs, zero steals, zero walks and a 17.6 percent strikeout rate in 14 games.
Apr 27, 2023
Gets first day off
Neto is not in the Angels' lineup Thursday against the Athletics, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
It's the first day off the rookie has received since his promotion. Neto hasn't gained much traction at the plate yet, although he does have six hits in his last 19 at-bats. Gio Urshela will handle shortstop Thursday.
Apr 20, 2023
Slaps two doubles Wednesday
Neto went 2-for-3 with two doubles in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Yankees in 10 innings. He also reached base when he was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning.
ANALYSIS
The pair of doubles were the first extra-base knocks of Neto's career, as the rookie shortstop had gone 1-for-16 with a base hit through his first four games. Neto's slow start at the dish has resulted in him quickly being dropped from the leadoff spot and moved to the bottom of the order, but the 22-year-old still remains a promising fantasy commodity. Though he doesn't project to hit for much power or offer much of an impact as a base stealer, Neto boasts an advanced hit tool and should see his .158 batting average climb dramatically from here on out.
Apr 16, 2023
Hitting leadoff against Red Sox
Neto is leading off and playing shortstop against the Red Sox on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Neto will hit at the top of the lineup in just his second career MLB game after being called up by the Angels on Saturday. The 22-year-old went hitless in his debut, but the 2022 first-round pick tore up Double-A pitching and has a skillset that suggests the potential for immediate fantasy contributions even if there are ups and downs in the early part of his career.
Apr 15, 2023
Called up for MLB debut
Neto had his contract selected by the Angels on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Neto will replace David Fletcher, who has been optioned out to Triple-A after a brutal start to the 2023 season. Neto entered the year as a consensus top-100 prospect and was slashing .444/.559/.815 with three home runs and three stolen bases through seven games at Double-A Rocket City. He will start at shortstop and bat eighth in his MLB debut Saturday afternoon against the Red Sox. It appears that the 22-year-old is going to get regular playing time in the Angels' infield as he makes the jump all the way to the majors. He was the 13th overall pick in the 2022 first-year player draft and is the first player from that class to reach the big leagues.
