Intends to enter transfer portal
Shapen intends to enter the transfer portal, Pete Thamel of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With at least one season of immediate eligibility available, Shapen will look to make the most of it by transferring away from Baylor and enrolling at a school whose football program offers a lot more promise. Despite being limited to eight games in 2023, Shapen still completed 184 passes for 2,188 passing yards and a 13:3 TD:INT ratio, which does not even include his four touchdowns as a rusher.

Confirmed out vs. West Virginia
Head coach Dave Aranda indicated Wednesday that Shapen (head) will not play in Saturday's game against West Virginia, Zach Smith of Waco Tribune-Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Previous reports had set the expectation that Shapen will miss the final game of the season, as he tends to a head injury. The senior quarterback ends the season with a completion rate of 60.5 percent with 2,171 yards, 13 touchdowns and three interceptions. In his absence, Sawyer Robertson and RJ Martinez have been taking reps in practice but the starter has not been announced.

Dealing with head injury
Coach Dave Aranda indicated Monday that Shapen is dealing with a head injury and is "not looking great" for Saturday's game against West Virginia, Shahji Adam of ABC 25 reports.
ANALYSIS
Shapen finished last week's game against TCU after logging 67 snaps. The 6-foot quarterback seems on track to miss the season finale against West Virginia. The Bears' signal-caller has completed 60.5 percent of his passes for 2,171 yards, 13 touchdowns and three interceptions this season. Should he be ruled out, Sawyer Robertson or RJ Martinez would get the start under center.
Nov 19, 2023
Notches fourth rushing score
Shapen was 20-for-30 passing for 197 yards and one touchdown during Saturday's 42-17 defeat versus TCU. He also had nine rushes for 42 yards with one touchdown.
ANALYSIS
Shapen notched his fourth rushing score of the season as the Bears fell to 2-8 on the season. It's been a disappointing season for Baylor and Shapen has had a hard time getting the offense going on a consistent basis. Since returning from an injury in Week 5, he has 11 touchdowns versus three interceptions. The Bears will finish the season at home against West Virginia.
Nov 12, 2023
Throws season-high four TDs
Shapen completed 22 of 45 passes for 253 yards, four touchdowns and one interception during Saturday's 59-25 defeat versus Kansas State. He also had seven rushes for negative six yards.
ANALYSIS
Shapen was able to throw for a season-high four touchdown passes, but it wasn't nearly enough as Kansas State ran away with the game. Shapen's interception and lost fumble were brutal blows as they both led to points for the Wildcats. It's been a disappointing season for the Bears and they will try to salvage any kind of good feeling when they play at TCU next week.
Nov 5, 2023
Pair of TDs in loss to Houston
Shapen completed 29 of 37 passes for 263 yards, two touchdowns and one interception during Saturday's 25-24 overtime loss against Houston. He also had 11 rushes for 29 yards.
ANALYSIS
Shapen threw a pair of touchdown passes for the first time since Week 1 against Texas State. Baylor has struggled on both sides of the ball this season and will need to continue to chuck the ball around for the rest of the year. Shapen will likely be throwing with high volume against a good Kansas State squad next week.
Oct 29, 2023
Tough game against Iowa State
Shapen completed 24 of 41 passes for 239 yards, one touchdown and one interception during Saturday's 30-18 loss against Iowa State. He also had seven rushes for negative two yards.
ANALYSIS
Shapen had been on a roll but was slowed down by the Cyclones. Iowa State does have one of the best defenses in the conference, so it could just be a blip on the schedule. The team will go up against Houston next week who has one of the worst defenses in the conference, so Shapen should be strongly considered.
Oct 22, 2023
Back-to-back 300-yard games
Shapen completed 25 of 42 passes for 316 yards and one touchdown during Saturday's 32-29 victory against Cincinnati. He also had nine rushes for 12 yards with one touchdown.
ANALYSIS
Shapen has been a sneaky good fantasy play in 2023 with at least one rushing touchdown in three of four games when healthy. He was also just seven yards shy in Week 5 at UCF of having at least 300 yards passing in every game this year. With Baylor's defense struggling this season, Shapen is set up for a big performance each and every week. His next chance for a big game will be against Iowa State who has one of the conference's better defenses.
Oct 8, 2023
Throws for 324 yards in loss
Shapen was 22-for-38 passing for 324 yards and one touchdown during Saturday's 39-14 defeat against Texas Tech. He also had 11 rushes for -20 yards.
ANALYSIS
Shapen was able to post his second 300-yard passing game of the year, but he was scrambling for his life as he also lost one of three fumbles on the day. Baylor has some issues on their offensive line which is going to limit what Shapen can do against most opponents. Baylor will be on a bye next week before playing at Cincinnati on Week 8.
Oct 1, 2023
Leads largest comeback for Bears
Shapen completed 21 of 34 passes for 293 yards and one touchdown during Saturday's 36-35 victory versus UCF. He also had nine rushes for -24 yards with one touchdown.
ANALYSIS
Shapen led the largest comeback in Baylor history as the Bears were down 35-7 in the 3rd quarter. It must feel nice for Baylor to have their starting quarterback returning as he gives them a chance to win games. Shapen connected with Monaray Baldwin seven times for 150 yards and a touchdown. Shapen should be considered for fantasy line-ups when the team plays Texas Tech next week.
Sep 30, 2023
Will start Saturday
Shapen (knee) will start Saturday's contest against UCF under center, Brett McMurphy of WatchStadium.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Shapen hasn't played since the opener against Texas State, but his return to action will be a major upgrade under center for the Bears. In his lone action of 2023, Shapen completed 21 of 31 passes for 303 yards and a pair of touchdown passes, also adding one on the ground.
Sep 30, 2023
Warming up Saturday
Shapen (knee) is in uniform and warming up ahead of Saturday's game at UCF, Darby Brown of KWTX reports.
ANALYSIS
Shapen led his team out of the tunnel and is warming up in uniform ahead of Saturday's game. It seems as if he will be ready to make his first appearance on the field since Week 1 versus Texas State. If for some reason he is unable to play, Sawyer Robertson will likely play in his place.
Sep 29, 2023
Expected to play Saturday
Shapen (knee) is expected to play in Saturday's game at Central Florida, Matt Zenitz of On3.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Shapen, who has not played since Week 1, is expected to make his return to the field Saturday. He was in uniform and warmed up last Saturday, but did not take the field. In his one game this season he completed 21 of 31 passes for 303 yards and two touchdowns.
Sep 24, 2023
Hopes to return soon
Shapen (knee) is considered day-to-day and hopeful to return soon, per Craig Smoak of SicEm365.com.
ANALYSIS
Shapen was unavailable Saturday, but he was able to go through warmups before Baylor's matchup with Texas. The junior quarterback departed the season opener with an MCL injury, but it appears he'll have a good chance to return next week against UCF.
Sep 23, 2023
Going through warmups, won't play
Shapen (knee) is in uniform and going through warmups ahead of Saturday's game against Texas, Eric Henry of 247Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Shapen was previously ruled out by head coach Dave Aranda earlier in the week, and won't appear in Saturday's contest, but his participation bodes well for his chances to return next week against UCF. He was seen moving well with a brace on his knee and his participation in practice will be a key indicator of whether he can return in Week 5 or not.
Sep 18, 2023
Ruled out against Texas
Coach Dave Aranda has ruled out Shapen (knee) for Saturday's game against Texas, Michael Haag of Lariat Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Shapen suffered an MCL injury in Week 1 and will miss his third straight game with injury. The initial timetable for Shapen was two-to-three weeks, so hopefully he can get back out there on Sept. 20 against UCF. Sawyer Robertson will remain the starter for the Bears.
Sep 11, 2023
Officially ruled out against LIU
Coach Dave Aranda said that Shapen (knee) has been ruled out of Saturday's game against LIU, Zach Smith of the Waco Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Aranda also said that Shapen will be questionable for next week's game against Texas. Sawyer Robinson will remain the starter after throwing for 218 yards and two interceptions in a 20-13 loss to Utah last week. Shapen's MCL injury was always expected to keep him out at least two games, but the team will hope their top signal caller can be out there against the Longhorns.
Sep 4, 2023
Out two-to-three weeks
Shapen (knee) will sit out two-to-three weeks, Eric Kelly of KWKT Fox 44 reports.
ANALYSIS
The earliest Shapen can play again is Sept. 23, when Baylor's football team will host Texas. He must sit out at least two games, both of which (against Utah and LIU) are also at home. In the meantime, Sawyer Robert will be Baylor's starting quarterback while Shapen recovers.
Sep 2, 2023
Suffers MCL injury in Week 1
Baylor's head coach David Aranda said Shapen hurt his MCL and will get an MRI to determine the severity of the injury, Zach Smith of the Waco Tribune-Herald reports. "He gave everything he had," Aranda said regarding the performance of his quarterback.
ANALYSIS
The potential loss of Shapen will hurt Baylor, as the signal-caller managed to retain the starting job in preseason after some underwhelming performances in 2022. Further exams will be needed to determine if Shapen will have to spend time on the sidelines, but if that's the case, then Sawyer Robertson would be in line to lead Baylor under center in Week 2 against Utah next Saturday.
May 23, 2023
Wins starting job
Shapen has been named Baylor's starting quarterback for the 2023-24 season, Craig Smoak of SicEm365.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Shapen is set to retain the starting job under center for the Bears next season. The junior quarterback led Baylor to 6-7 record last year (4-5 in conference), throwing for 2,790 yards (233-of-368), 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Shapen and the Bears will look to bounce back from an underwhelming 2022 season this fall.
Nov 27, 2022
Pair of scores in season finale
Shapen completed 18 of 36 passes for 179 yards, two touchdowns and one interception during Friday's 38-27 loss against Texas. He also had seven rushes for zero yards.
ANALYSIS
Shapen ended the regular season with at least one interception thrown in four straight games. The signal caller struggled with turnovers in his sophomore season with 10 interceptions and three lost fumbles. His 18 total scores, 16 through the air and two on the ground, were not enough for Baylor to avoid a relatively underwhelming season with a 6-6 record. Either way, they are still bowl-eligible and Shapen will likely have one more chance to end the season when they find out their bowl assignment.
Nov 20, 2022
Mixed results in loss to TCU
Shapen was 21-for-30 passing for 269 yards, one touchdown and one interception during Saturday's 29-28 loss to TCU. He also had seven rushes for 20 yards.
ANALYSIS
Shapen completed 70 percent of his passes in the near-win against TCU, however, he also threw a critical interception, something he's done in five of his last seven games. Baylor has clearly committed to the run-game with 46 rushing attempts compared to Shapen's 30 passing attempts against TCU. Expect much of the same at Texas next week which makes it hard to rely on Shapen for fantasy purposes.
Nov 13, 2022
Shut down by the Wildcats
Shapen was 22-for-38 passing for 203 yards and two interceptions during Saturday's 31-3 defeat to Kansas State. He also had seven rushes for 21 yards.
ANALYSIS
Shapen failed to record a touchdown for the second week in a row. Turnovers have been a huge problem for the signal caller since the team's bye in Week 6. In his last five games, he has five interceptions and three lost fumbles for eight total turnovers compared to just four touchdowns in that span. It may be time to look elsewhere for fantasy purposes. Baylor will host undefeated TCU next week.
Nov 6, 2022
Plays game manager again
Shapen was 14-for-23 passing for 132 yards and one interception during Saturday's 38-35 win versus Oklahoma.
ANALYSIS
Shapen's 132 passing yards were a season-low as he was called upon to be a game manager once again. Baylor racked up 281 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground against the Sooners. As long as the Bears keep winning, they may continue to deploy this strategy with their quarterback. It will be tougher test for their run game next week as they host Kansas State.
Oct 30, 2022
Totals 241 yards against Texas Tech
Shapen completed 19 of 30 passes for 211 yards and a touchdown with 30 rushing yards on 10 carries during Saturday's 45-17 win against Texas Tech.
ANALYSIS
Shapen also had a lost fumble, his third in three straight games. Despite the quarterback's turnovers, Baylor is having a ton of success on the offensive end behind true freshman running back Richard Reese. Shapen will potentially need to open up his game a bit more when Baylor plays at Oklahoma next week.
Oct 23, 2022
Struggles in winning effort
Shapen was 17-for-26 passing for 164 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions during Saturday's 35-23 win over Kansas.
ANALYSIS
Shapen also had a lost fumble for three total turnovers on the day. The starting quarterback was replaced in the third quarter by Kyron Drones who added a rushing score against the Jayhawks. Baylor has turned to a rush-heavy offense which may continue at Texas Tech next week.
Oct 22, 2022
Warming up for Saturday's game
Shapen (head) is warming up ahead of Saturday's game against Kansas, Jordan Guskey of The Topeka Capital-Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Shapen has been trending towards playing throughout the week and now with kickoff approaching, it appears he will play against the Jayhawks. The sophomore quarterback was knocked out of the game against West Virginia but has since been back on the practice field.
Oct 22, 2022
Likely back Saturday
Shapen (head) is expected back Saturday against Kansas, Eric Kelly of KWKT 44 reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Dave Aranda said Wednesday night that "Blake is back. He's been with us all week. Has looked really good, feels good." With that, Shapen appears to be cleared and ready to take the field against Kansas. Look for confirmation during warmups of Saturday's noon Eastern kickoff.
Oct 17, 2022
Questionable for Saturday
Shapen (head) is questionable for Saturday's showdown with Kansas, John Werner of the Waco Tribune-Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Shapen was the victim of a targeting call after taking a hard hit to the head on a QB slide during the third quarter of Thursday's game against West Virginia. The sophomore quarterback is still undergoing evaluations on the injury, and his status for Saturday's game is in question. Shapen has led the Bears to a 3-3 start, throwing for 1,444 yards (111-of-162), 11 touchdowns and three interceptions. If Shapen is unable to suit up, Kyron Drones will likely start in his place.
Oct 13, 2022
Night is done
Shapen (head) was seen on the sidelines in street clothes after departing in the third quarter with a head injury, Chris Williams of KWTX 10 News reports.
ANALYSIS
Shapen took a late hit to his head after giving himself up on a slide in the third quarter and will not be able to return. Kyron Drones will remain under center for the remainder of Thursday's action, and possibly beyond this week if Shapen is forced to miss extended time.
Oct 13, 2022
Heads to locker room
Shapen took a hard hit to the head after a slide, which resulted in a targeting call, and went into the locker room for evaluation, Schuyler Callihan of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Shapen was hit hard in the head on a late tackle after giving himself up on the play. He first went into the medical tent and then made his way to the locker room shortly afterward. Nothing yet has been confirmed, but it's likely his night is over and Kyron Jones will fill in the rest of the way. Shapen completed 14-of-22 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns before getting injured in the third quarter.
Oct 1, 2022
Mixed results against Cowboys
Shapen completed 28 of 40 passes for 345 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions in Saturday's 36-25 loss to Oklahoma State.
ANALYSIS
Shapen was able to record multiple touchdowns for the third time this year, however, he also had multiple turnovers for the first time this season. Those two interceptions turned out to be too costly as Baylor fell to Oklahoma State in a crucial conference match-up early in the season. The 345 passing yards were a season-high as he connected with Monaray Baldwin for a pair of long scores. Shapen and the Bears will be off next week before playing at West Virginia on Oct. 13.
Sep 24, 2022
Three TDs at Iowa State
Shapen completed 19 of 26 passes for 238 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for three yards on seven carries in Saturday's 31-24 win at Iowa State.
ANALYSIS
Shapen did everything he needed to in order to take down the Cyclones on the road while posting a season-high three touchdown passes. Baylor has one of the more balanced offensive attacks in the conference and Shapen will get his fair share of opportunities most weeks. Through four games, the Bears' starting quarterback has nine total scores and just one interception. Baylor will host Oklahoma State next week.
Sep 18, 2022
Notches rushing score in win
Shapen completed 15 of 26 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown with an interception to go along with 42 yards and a score on three carries in Saturday's 42-7 win over Texas State.
ANALYSIS
Shapen now has multiple touchdowns in two of three games, including a pair of rushing scores. Take out a tough match-up with BYU and Shapen has been a reliable fantasy option at quarterback. Baylor won't see too many defenses on the level of BYU, so expect Shapen to have a respectable year. Baylor will open up conference play at Iowa State next week.
Sep 10, 2022
Stifled by tough BYU defense
Shapen completed 18 of 28 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 26-20 loss at BYU in double overtime.
ANALYSIS
Shapen and the Baylor offense had all kinds of trouble moving the ball against a stingy BYU defense. The sophomore has yet to commit a turnover this season and has four total touchdowns on the year. Baylor's offense and Shapen should see a return to production against Texas State next week.
Sep 4, 2022
Strong start in 2022 season
Shapen completed 17 of 20 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 11 yards and another score on four carries in Saturday's 69-10 win over Albany.
ANALYSIS
Shapen was nearly perfect as the Bears did pretty much anything they wanted against the Great Danes. It will be interesting to see if Shapen can get more opportunities in the running game as he had just 21 carries for 59 yards and no touchdowns in five games during the 2021 season. If he can add some rushing scores, his fantasy appeal becomes more desirable. Baylor has a much tougher test at BYU next week.
Dec 27, 2021
Not expected to play in Sugar Bowl
Shapen is recovering from a shoulder injury and is not expected to play in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1 against Ole Miss, John Werner of the Waco Tribune-Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Shapen stepped in to start the Big 12 Championship Game against Oklahoma State and the team's regular-season finale taking over for Gerry Bohanon, who was out with a hamstring injury. Shapen ended up picking a shoulder injury in the Big 12 Championship Game, which appears like it will cost him a chance to play in the bowl game. Luckily for Baylor, Bohanon is expected to be available on Jan. 1.
Dec 4, 2021
Will Start Big 12 Championship Game
Shapen will start the Big 12 Championship Game against Oklahoma State on Saturday, per ESPN College Gameday.
ANALYSIS
Shapen played reasonably well in his first career start last week versus Texas Tech, completing 20 of his 34 pass attempts for 254 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He will be facing a different animal on defense this week and will be away from the friendly confines of McLane Stadium on the big stage, so he may not be able to replicate his success from last Saturday.
Nov 28, 2021
Wins first start
Shapen completed 20 of 34 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 24 yards on seven carries in Saturday's 27-24 win over Texas Tech.
ANALYSIS
Shapen made his first career start despite Gerry Bohanon (hamstring) entering the game with a probable tag. He did just enough to help the Bears make the Big 12 title game as they held off a pesky Red Raiders squad. Stay tuned to see if Bohanon will be healthy enough to play a tough Oklahoma State defense next week.
Nov 20, 2021
Takes over for injured starter
Shapen completed 16 of 21 passes for 137 yards while rushing for 44 yards on five carries in Saturday's 20-10 win at Kansas State.
ANALYSIS
Shapen replaced starter Gerry Bohanon who was forced out of the game with a hamstring injury. Prior to the win over the Wildcats, Shapen had attempted just three passes. The seriousness of the injury to Bohanon is not currently known, so stay tuned on who will start against Texas Tech next week.
