Garcia-Castaneda will have finished 2023 having logged only one reception for seven yards. The earliest he can play is 2024, and only if his ACL heals appropriately. Garcia-Castaneda was due for increased output in 2023, having logged 37 receptions for 120 yards and one touchdown a year before, when he transferred from New Mexico State.

Garcia-Castaneda suffered an undisclosed injury during Nebraska's season opener against Minnesota on Thursday, Mitch Sherman of The Athletic reports.

Prior to going down with the injury, Garcia-Castaneda pulled down one catch for seven yards. Following the contest, coach Matt Rhule said the injury looked to possibly be serious, putting Garcia-Castaneda's status up in the air for next Saturday's game against Colorado and potentially the following weeks. If he ends up missing time, expect Alex Bullock and Marcus Washington to see more action.

Garcia-Castaneda (undisclosed) entered the transfer portal Tuesday, Brian Christopherson of 247Sports.com reports.

Garcia-Castaneda finished out his sophomore season at New Mexico State with 36 catches for 567 yards and four scores, prompting his choice to up his level of competition. He could have up to three seasons of eligibility remaining when he hits the field in Lincoln in 2022.

Garcia-Castaneda didn't play in Saturday's game against San Diego State due to being in the COVID-19 protocol and is unlikely to be ready in time for Week 3 versus in-state rival New Mexico, Jason Groves of the LAs Cruces Sun-News reports.

Garcia-Castaneda was targeted eight times in the season opener but was unable to follow that up last week. While he will reportedly clear COVID protocol by Friday, it doesn't sound like he will play due to his absence from practice the last two weeks. A return Sept. 18 versus South Carolina State seems more likely.
