Not with first team offense
Altmyer is not warming up with the first team offense ahead of Saturday's game at Iowa, Jeremy Werner of 247Sports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
John Paddock is warming up with the first team offense, signaling Altmyer could be on the bench following his one-game injury absence. Paddock played very well last week, throwing for 500 yards and four touchdowns in the win over Indiana, so it's not very surprising that the Illini are going with the hot hand.

Cleared to start
Altmyer (undisclosed) will be the starting quarterback for Illinois' game Saturday at Iowa, Matt Schick of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Illinois head coach Bret Bielema told Sirius XM's Big Ten Radio that Altmyer has been cleared to start at Iowa. The quarterback did not play when Illinois hosted Indiana during Week 11. Altmyer's latest performance was in Week 10, when he completed 24 passes for 212 yards and a 3:1 TD:INT ratio.

Needs to be cleared
Head coach Bret Bielema indicated Monday that Altmeyer is questionable for Saturday's game against Iowa, Bret Beherns of WCIA3 reports.
ANALYSIS
Bielema mentions Altmyer was throwing the ball Monday and looks "really, really good" but cannot be officially cleared until he passes another protocol. More news will surface regarding his availability as the week progresses.

Set to play in Week 12
Illinois coach Bret Bielema said Saturday that Altmyer (undisclosed) will be available for Week 12's matchup with Iowa, Jeremy Werner of 247Sports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Altmyer will return to action next week after missing Week 11's game against Indiana. He is set to replace John Paddock as Illinois' starting quarterback.
Nov 11, 2023
Out Saturday
Altmyer (undisclosed) will not play in Saturday's game against Indiana.
ANALYSIS
The sophomore quarterback will not be available on Saturday's game against Indiana as he is dealing with an undisclosed injury. Altmyer has logged 1,883 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions this season.
Nov 9, 2023
Not cleared to practice
Altmyer (undisclosed) is not cleared to practice yet, Joey Wagner of 247Sports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Altmyer not being cleared to practice makes him far from probable for Illinois' game Saturday against Indiana. But should Altmyer be cleared right before the Indiana game, Illinois' head Bret Bielema said he would be comfortable implementing his injured quarterback into the team's game plan a little late, making him not doubtful either.

Leaves early in win
Altmyer (undisclosed) completed 24 of 31 passes for 212 yards, three touchdowns and one interception during Saturday's 27-26 win against Minnesota. He also had 11 rushes for -19 yards.
ANALYSIS
Altmyer started off hot against Minnesota, capping off each of the first two drives of the day with touchdown passes before adding a third passing score in the second quarter. The offense stalled after that, allowing Minnesota to take the lead in the fourth quarter before Altmyer was knocked out of the game with an undisclosed injury. Senior backup John Paddock then delivered an electric final drive, giving the Illini the late victory. Altmyer's status will be worth monitoring heading into a matchup against Indiana next Saturday.

Expected to play Saturday
Head coach Brett Bielema indicated Monday that he expects Altmyer (undisclosed) to be involved in the game Saturday, Scott Richey of The Champaign News-Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
Altmyer left Saturday's game against Minnesota late in the fourth quarter due to injury, leaving John Paddock to head the game-winning drive for the Illini. Altmyer should be ready to give it a go this week, but Paddock would likely draw the start if not.

Great game mired by injury
Altmyer completed 24 of 31 passes for three touchdowns before suffering an injury during the Fighting Illini's 27-26 win Saturday at Minnesota, according to Joey Wagner of 247Sports.com.
ANALYSIS
Altmyer finished Saturday with the most touchdowns across any game of his 2023 season thus far. He threw TDs to Tip Reiman, Isaiah Williams and Kaden Feagin, the last of his three throws accounting for 54 yards. Altmyer could have thrown more touchdowns, but he suffered a hard hit that forced John Paddock into the Minnesota matchup. The latter proceeded to lead Illinois with a game-winning drive.

Kills Badgers with his legs
Altmyer was 13-for-21 passing for 100 yards and two touchdowns during Saturday's 25-21 defeat versus Wisconsin. He also had 16 rushes for 100 yards.
ANALYSIS
With Illinois' running back room dinged up with numerous injuries, Altmyer showcased his abilities as a rusher against Wisconsin's defense. The sophomore reached 100 yards on the ground for the first time in his career as he repeatedly dodged pressure and scrambled out of the pocket. Altmyer ultimately logged season lows as a passer, though he still capped the Fighting Illini's first two scoring drives with touchdown passes of one and three yards to tight ends Tanner Arkin and Tip Reiman, respectively. The Ole Miss transfer also avoided turning the ball over for the first time this season, though this effort was ultimately spoiled by the Badgers' 14-point comeback in the second half. He and the Fighting Illini will look to bounce back against Minnesota in Week 9.

Puts in winning effort Week 7
Altmyer completed 16 of 28 passes for 206 yards, two touchdowns and one interception during Saturday's 27-24 victory over Maryland. He also had 13 rushes for 29 yards.
ANALYSIS
Altmyer logged an inefficient, though winning performance in this back-and-forth contest between Maryland and Illinois. The sophomore quarterback hit touchdown passes of 44 and 15 yards to his top pass catchers Pat Bryant and slot receiver Isaiah Williams, respectively. Altmyer has been rather mistake prone during his first season with the Fighting Illini, as he's now logged at least one turnover in all seven games this season. With 11 total touchdowns to 11 turnovers this season, Altmyer's fantasy value will remain highly limited in what is a relatively run-first offense. However, his passing workload could increase if top running backs Kaden Feagin (shoulder) and Reggie Love (lower leg) are unavailable for the Week 8 contest against Wisconsin.

Puts up numbers in loss
Altmyer was 29-for-47 passing for 289 yards, one touchdown and one interception during Friday's 20-7 defeat to Nebraska. He also had seven rushes for negative three yards.
ANALYSIS
Altmyer logged a season-high 47 passing attempts, as Illinois' running backs were limited to just 12 combined carries for 24 yards. As a result, the sophomore quarterback logged his second-most passing yards of any game this season, though he also averaged his second-lowest passing yards per attempt (6.1). This inefficiency speaks to the struggles Altmyer has faced when he has not been supported by a strong running game this season. He has still shown flashes of talent throughout the year, such as his perfectly-thrown 46-yard touchdown pass down the sideline to wideout Pat Bryant near the end of the first half. But, it appears he may have to play without much of a complementary running game moving forward, as top running back Reggie Love exited with a lower-leg injury Friday, and No. 2 running back Josh McCray will miss the rest of the season with a neck injury. Altmyer will likely need to put up a lot of passing yards when Illinois faces Maryland's prolific passing offense in Week 7.

Tosses one score in loss
Altmyer was 16-for-25 passing for 202 yards and one touchdown during Saturday's 44-19 defeat to Purdue. He also had 13 rushes for 29 yards.
ANALYSIS
Altmyer's final stat line was salvaged by a 10-yard touchdown pass to Pat Bryant that pulled the score to 37-19 early in the fourth quarter. The sophomore transfer ultimately did not finish the contest, as backup John Paddock came in during true garbage time in this blowout loss. Altmyer performed decently considering that Illinois was without No. 1 running back Reggie Love (ankle). The team also lost offensive linemen Josh Gesky (knee/ankle) and Zy Crisler (ankle) to injuries during the third quarter. Altmyer did cough up a fumble for the second week in a row, however, and he's now totaled nine turnovers compared to eight touchdowns through five starts this season.

Bounces back Week 4
Altmyer was 25-for-36 passing for 303 yards and one touchdown during Saturday's 23-17 victory over Florida Atlantic. He also had eight rushes for one yard with one touchdown.
ANALYSIS
Altmyer appeared to move past his dreadful four-turnover performance against Penn State in Week 3. The Ole Miss transfer logged season highs in completion percentage (69.4), passing yards and yards per attempt (8.4) against Florida Atlantic. Altmyer particularly picked it up after falling behind 10-0 to start the second quarter. After passing for a 46-yard touchdown to tight end Griffin Moore, Altymer also scored his third rushing touchdown of the season with a seven-yard score to put Illinois up 14-10 before halftime. This comeback performance is encouraging, though he'll have to prove he can make it happen against better competition when the Fighting Illini travel to Purdue in Week 5.

Waffles in bad loss
Altmyer completed 15 of 28 passes for 163 yards and four interceptions during Saturday's 30-13 defeat against Penn State.
ANALYSIS
Altmyer failed to ever pose a threat against Penn State's elite defense, as he tossed an interception on one of his two trips within the red zone. The Ole Miss transfer also committed two more interceptions on the Fighting Illini's side of the 50-yard line, resulting in two touchdowns for the Nittany Lions' offense. Altmyer was eventually pulled for backup quarterback Josh Paddock after Illinois fell behind 30-7 to begin the fourth quarter. Altmyer should still be listed as Illinois' starting quarterback this coming week versus Florida Atlantic, though his starting job could likely be in jeopardy if he logs another poor performance Week 4.

Long rushing TD in loss
Altmyer completed 19 of 28 passes for 202 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions during Friday's 34-23 defeat to Kansas. He also had 13 rushes for 70 yards with two touchdowns.
ANALYSIS
Altmyer put together a clutch performance late during last week's Illinois debut, but his new team hit a much tougher test with the Jayhawks in Week 2. The Ole Miss transfer had to play from behind for almost the entire game as Kansas got out to a quick lead before going up 21-0 lead late in the first half. The 6-foot-2 sophomore showed he's capable of breaking a long run when necessary, tucking it and running for a 72-yard touchdown late in the third quarter. However, he still netted just 70 yards on the ground due to lost sack yardage. Altmyer may have to continue taking more risks if Illinois continues to play from behind while facing tougher competition this season.

Deals game-winning drive in debut
Altmyer completed 18 of 26 passes for 211 yards, two touchdowns and one interception during Saturday's 30-28 win versus Toledo. He also had nine rushes for 69 yards.
ANALYSIS
Altmyer is the second transfer quarterback in as many seasons to step into a starting role for Illinois. The sophomore signal-caller played sparingly during his 2022 true freshman campaign with Ole Miss, but he showed great poise in winning time Saturday, connecting with senior wideout Casey Washington for a 33-yard pickup to keep alive his team's final drive of the game. The Fighting Illini's offense is still built first and foremost on their running game, though Altmyer showed an ability to make things happen on the ground himself versus Toledo. Altmyer's overall fantasy value should be tied to the number of red-zone scoring opportunities this offense is able to generate.

Named starting quarterback
Altmyer was announced as Illinois' starting quarterback Monday, Jeremy Werner of 247Sports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Altmyer and John Paddock, who transferred to Illinois from Ball State, had been competing for snaps as the Fighting Illini's primary quarterback. Fortunately for the former, it will be he who receives an opportunity to step up. As a backup option at Mississippi State, Altmyer logged 28 completions for 317 yards and three touchdowns across a two-season span. If healthy, he can easily surpass all those numbers in 2023.

Headed to Illinois
Altmyer announced Thursday via his personal Twitter page that he is transferring to Illinois.
ANALYSIS
Altmyer will come in with 2022 starter Tommy DeVito heading out the door after he was denied a waiver for another year of eligibility. The redshirt freshman appeared in eight games as a backup at Ole Miss completing 28-of-55 pass attempts for 317 yards and three touchdowns to go with three interceptions. His stats aren't eye-popping in the slightest, but he was a former four-star recruit who should be the frontrunner to get the quarterback job right away and will have multiple years of eligibility remaining.

Announces transfer intentions
Altmyer announced via Twitter that he will enter the transfer portal.
ANALYSIS
Altmyer was a top-150 recruit out of high school , but has played sparingly over his two seasons at Ole Miss. The Starkville native will look to get a fresh start elsewhere and hopefully find a better opportunity for playing time.

Should start next week
Head coach Lane Kiffin said the plan is for Altmyer to start against Central Arkansas on Week 2, Nick Suss of The Jackson Clarion-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
Altmyer was listed as a co-starter before the season opener against Troy, but he ended up operating as a backup behind Jaxson Dart. Kiffin said the two quarterbacks split reps during training camp and it seems he wants to see both players in action before deciding who will be the starter for the rest of the campaign.
Aug 29, 2022
Listed as co-starter
Altmyer was listed as a co-starter ahead of Saturday's game against Tulsa, Nick Daschel of The Oregonian reports.
ANALYSIS
Altmyer was named a co-starter next to Jaxson Dart. The two-quarterbacks split reps during fall camp and head coach Lane Kiffin's decision will likely come on Saturday. Altmyer appeared in four games for the Rebels last season, competing against Dart, who transferred from USC in the offseason.
Aug 14, 2022
Splitting time with Jaxson Dart
Altmyer has been alternating first team reps with Jaxson Dart in Mississippi's fall camp, DJournal.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Altmyer is battling for a starting quarterback position with Jaxson Dart, and the two inexperienced players seem to be about even. Alytmyer is a little less experienced than Dart, having appeared in just four games and thrown for 192 yards, but he has an advantage in that he has spent a year with the team already.

Possible option if Corral sits
Altmyer could be an option at quarterback for Mississippi if Matt Corral is unavailable against LSU, The Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Altmyer is 0-for-4 passing on the season but was the one Mississippi turned to against Tennessee when Corral briefly exited the contest. Mississippi has not divulged much about its backup plan if Corral is unavailable Saturday, but Altmyer's presence in last week's close game suggests he'd have a shot at playing should Corral sit.
