Shadrick Byrd Injury News & Updates

Byrd has entered the transfer portal, Mike Farrell of MikeFarrellSports.com reports.

Having only one season of collegiate eligibility remaining, Byrd will consider all his options before enrolling at a school that can personally fulfill him. He suffered a significant slide in output during 2023. Byrd logged 60 carries for 211 yards (3.5 averaged) across eight games, all career lows since he transferred from Iowa to UNC Charlotte.

Byrd (ankle) did not play during UNC Charlotte's game Saturday at South Florida.

Byrd sat out all four games of UNC Charlotte's November 2023 schedule. He finished the year with 60 carries for 211 yards (3.5 averaged per carry) across eight games. Byrd's ankle injury limited his 2023 output, which was far worse than his 2021 and 2022 outputs. He will look to bounce back in 2024, which would be his redshirt senior season.

Byrd (ankle) is out for Saturday's game versus Rice, Hunter Bailey of The Charlotte Observer reports.

Byrd will miss his third straight game Saturday as he continues to deal with an ankle injury. With Terron Kellman and Henry Rutledge also out, Hahsaun Wilson -- who rushed 24 times for 198 yards and three touchdowns last week -- is set to lead the backfield once again.

Byrd being excluded from UNC Charlotte's updated depth chart indicates he is unlikely to play at Tulsa, though that is not for certain. Terron Kellman was solid in relief against Florida Atlantic and could be so again potentially without Byrd in his crosshairs.

Byrd (ankle) was injured in the first quarter and is unlikely to return to Friday's game versus FAU, the ESPN2 broadcast reports.

Byrd left the game in the first quarter with an ankle injury and has not seen the field since. During the third quarter, the broadcast shared that he is unlikely to return to the game. In his absence, Terron Killman has taken the vast majority of carries out of the backfield.

Byrd totaled 20 rushes for 92 yards and gathered in their only target for four yards during Saturday's 14-0 loss to Navy.

With Durrell Robinson recently ruled out for the remainder of the season, it appears Byrd will be the 49ers lead back moving forward. He rushed 20 times (nearly double Terron Kellman's volume) and rushed for nearly 100 yards on 4.6 yards per carry. This massive increase in touches immediately gives him fantasy relevance, despite it being on a struggling offense.

Byrd rushed 15 times for 52 yards and caught two passes for 16 yards against La Tech on Saturday.

This is the final game of the season for the 49ers. Byrd was the lead back for the team, but with a new head coach arriving, it's entirely possibly the back will end up transferring.

Byrd rushed 14 times for 50 yards and had one catch for nine yards versus MTSU on Saturday.

Byrd doubled anybody else's touches in the run game, though he didn't do a ton with them. Charlotte ends the season against Louisiana Tech, though, which is an easy matchup that could serve Byrd well.

Byrd hasn't rushed for more than 83 yards in a game this season, but he has become a part of the passing offense. In four of his last five games he's had over 30 yards receiving.

That's four games in a row with a touchdown for Byrd, who has put a slow start behind him. Interestingly, he has over 30 yards receiving in three of those four games as well.

On the one hand, that's three games in a row with a score for Byrd. However, his touchdown came in garbage time in this game and when your team is playing meaningless snaps in a definitive loss to FIU, you have a lot of problems.

Byrd rushed 10 times for 37 yards and two scores against UAB on Saturday.

Byrd still isn't getting a lot of touches - his season high is 16 - but at least he's doing something with them now. This comes after he totaled 113 yards and a touchdown last week.

It took six games, but Byrd has his first touchdown of the season. That's not encouraging on the fantasy side of things, especially since Byrd also hasn't had more than 80 rushing yards in a game.

It wasn't a great day for Byrd, but last season he was sharing carries, particularly with Calvin Camp. In this game, Byrd was the only player with more than three carries.

Byrd rushed six times for 21 yards and a touchdown against La Tech on Saturday. He also caught two passes for 16 yards.

That's back-to-back game with a touchdown for Byrd. However, he hasn't had more than 16 touches in a game and is sharing carries with a few players.

Byrd rushed seven times for 54 yards and had two catches for 47 yards against Rice on Saturday.

Byrd had a 44-yard run and a 34-yard catch that accounted for basically all his yards, but he still ultimately ended up with over 100 total yards and a score. In the end, it doesn't matter how you get to your numbers, just that you got there.

Byrd rushed 11 times for 58 yards and caught one pass for 53 yards against WKU on Saturday.

Byrd led the 49ers in receiving yards with his one long catch, and he does have 169 yards through the air this season. On the other hand, he only has 372 rushing yards in eight games.

Byrd rushed 14 times for 80 yards versus FIU on Friday.

This is a nice bounce back for Byrd, who was held to 17 yards against Illinois last week. The back only has one rushing touchdown this season, and while he has two receiving touchdowns that's on only eight catches.

Byrd rushed 14 times for 72 yards and caught two passes for 41 yards and a touchdown against MTSU on Friday.

Byrd and Calvin Camp have a true split role at running back for this team. While Byrd always gets his touches, there may be a ceiling on them. The former Iowa Hawkeye has had 16 touches in a game twice this season, but hasn't had more than that.

Byrd rushed 13 times for 48 yards and caught three passes for 39 yards versus Georgia State on Saturday.

Byrd and Calvin Camp basically got an even split in touches in this game. Camp had a few more rushing yards (53) on one more carry, but Byrd did have a decent day through the air. Still, it doesn't feel like this offense has a true lead back, and that makes the fantasy situation murky.

Byrd only rushed 10 times for 30 yards against Duke on Friday. He also caught one pass for an 11-yard touchdown.

Byrd rose to the top of the depth chart after Charlotte's top-two rushers from 2020 graduated. While the back did get the most carries, he didn't do much with that. That could lead to him falling down the depth chart, and fast.

Byrd is listed atop Charlotte's running back depth chart for Week 1 versus Duke.

Byrd was believed to be the favorite to land that gig and was considered one of the favorites to land the starting gig for the 49ers to open the season. It appears that is indeed the case and there are 117 carries vacated from last year's team following the departures of Tre Harbison and Aaron McAllister.

Byrd has been explosive in camp and may be the top candidate to open the season as the 49ers' starting running back, Jake Auten of Underdog Dynasty reports.

Byrd transferred to Charlotte from Iowa prior to the 2021 campaign and appears to have set himself up for a potentially large role in the backfield. Charlotte's two leading rushers from a season ago, Tre Harbison and Aaron McAllister, combined for 117 carries over six games last season and are both gone, so there could be room for a sizeable workload for Byrd if he ultimately claims the job.

Byrd was the No. 4 back on the depth chart for the Hawkeyes and only saw time on special teams in the season opener. He will look for better opportunities elsewhere and keep at least three years of eligibility.
