Mathis accrued five carries for 22 yards and reeled in both of his targets for 28 yards and one touchdown during Saturday's 25-24 overtime victory versus Baylor.

Mathis' touchdown reception was the first in his career as he has hauled in just 20 catches in his 26 collegiate games. It was also his first score of the season. The West Virginia transfer has not had a big role in the offense to date. Maybe this score and the first conference win will lead to more work moving forward. Houston will play Cincinnati next week.

Coach Dana Holgorsen said Mathis (ankle) is expected to return Saturday against Texas Tech, Joseph Duarte of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Mathis has missed the last two weeks with an ankle injury. He was dropped down to the No. 2 running back on the depth chart in favor of Parker Jenkins, who rushed for three touchdowns last week. If Mathis does suit up it will be interesting to see the snap counts between the two lead running backs for the Cougars.

Mathis logged 23 carries for 53 yards and reeled in his only target for seven yards during Saturday's 23-20 win against Oklahoma.

Mathis was able to record a season-high 23 carries, however, found minimal room to run the ball at just 2.3 yards per carry. He also saw Garrett Greene take over at quarterback in the second half and rack up 119 yards and two touchdowns on 14 rushing attempts. Both Mathis and Greene will have a tougher defensive assignment next week when they host Kansas State.

Both backs should have productive weeks against Towson next week.

As the back-up, Mathis has 256 yards on 59 carries during the 2021 season. West Virginia will play in a bowl game.

Look for him to be involved against Eastern Kentucky on Saturday.
