Adds first career touchdown catch
Mathis accrued five carries for 22 yards and reeled in both of his targets for 28 yards and one touchdown during Saturday's 25-24 overtime victory versus Baylor.
ANALYSIS
Mathis' touchdown reception was the first in his career as he has hauled in just 20 catches in his 26 collegiate games. It was also his first score of the season. The West Virginia transfer has not had a big role in the offense to date. Maybe this score and the first conference win will lead to more work moving forward. Houston will play Cincinnati next week.

Expected back Saturday
Coach Dana Holgorsen said Mathis (ankle) is expected to return Saturday against Texas Tech, Joseph Duarte of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Mathis has missed the last two weeks with an ankle injury. He was dropped down to the No. 2 running back on the depth chart in favor of Parker Jenkins, who rushed for three touchdowns last week. If Mathis does suit up it will be interesting to see the snap counts between the two lead running backs for the Cougars.
Sep 23, 2023
Not starting amid ankle injury
Mathis is still nursing an ankle injury that held him out Week 3 and it does not seem like he will play with Parker Jenkins getting the start and Stacy Sneed being named the backup, Joseph Duarte of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Mathis appears to either have a limited role or not play at all despite head coach Dana Holgorsen confirming at the beginning of the week that Mathis would be ready to play. The team is likely erring on the side of caution with his injury and looking ahead to their conference schedule which begins next week against Texas Tech. Mathis' status will certainly be worth monitoring again heading into Week 5.

Ready for Week 4
Mathis (lower leg) will be ready for the Cougars' game Saturday against Sam Houston, GoCoogs.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mathis did not participate in the 2023 Cougars' third game. Fortunately, it is all he will sit out because of his lower-leg injury. Their head coach Dana Holgorsen confirmed that Mathis will be ready this week. He logged 16 carries for 98 yards (more than six per carry) across the 2023 Cougars' first two games and will look to continue his excellence during Week 4.
Sep 17, 2023
Out during Week 3
Mathis (lower leg) did not play during Houston's game Saturday against TCU.
ANALYSIS
Unsurprisingly, Mathis sat out Week 3 after being unable to practice between Houston's previous game and Saturday. But because Brandon Campbell (undisclosed) was available against TCU, the Cougars still used three of their running backs.
Sep 16, 2023
Questionable Saturday night
Mathis (lower leg) is questionable for Houston's tilt with TCU, Joseph Duarte of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Mathis reportedly didn't practice all week, but still has a chance to suit up Saturday night. The Cougars' tailback has logged 16 carries for 98 yards and three catches for 22 yards this season.
Sep 3, 2023
Leads running backs in debut
Mathis accrued eight carries for 38 yards during Saturday's 17-14 win against Texas-San Antonio.
ANALYSIS
Mathis was the top running back with eight carries, yet that's not saying much as quarterback Donovan Smith led the backfield with a team-high 13 carries. We'll learn a lot more when the team plays an easier opponent at Rice next week.
Aug 28, 2023
Listed as starting running back
Mathis is listed as the starting running back ahead of Saturday's game against UTSA, JJ Perez of 247sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Mathis is set to start at running back in his first career game with his new team. The 5-foot-11 running back previously played three seasons with West Virginia before transferring in May. Mathis is a former three-star recruit who rushed for 562 yards and five touchdowns in 10 games last season.
May 15, 2023
Commits to Houston
Mathis announced his commitment to Houston on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Now, Mathis is expected to be Houston's No. 1 running back. As the top RB for West Virginia during 2022, he logged 562 yards on 135 carries and five touchdowns across his 10 games. Houston receiving Mathis' commitment is expected to lower carries of the team's other backs, primarily Brandon Campbell and Stacy Sneed.
Nov 28, 2022
Totals 11 touches in win
Mathis tallied nine carries for 13 yards and hauled in both of his targets for four yards during Saturday's 24-19 win over Oklahoma State.
ANALYSIS
Mathis led the Mountaineers with 31 percent of the carries during the 2022 season. On those 135 totes, he rushed for 562 yards (4.2 yards per carry) and five touchdowns. He was not very active in the team's last two games with just 13 carries for 17 yards as West Virginia looked to the future of their program. The Mountaineers will have a crowded backfield next season.
Nov 13, 2022
Narrow running lanes against OU
Mathis logged 23 carries for 53 yards and reeled in his only target for seven yards during Saturday's 23-20 win against Oklahoma.
ANALYSIS
Mathis was able to record a season-high 23 carries, however, found minimal room to run the ball at just 2.3 yards per carry. He also saw Garrett Greene take over at quarterback in the second half and rack up 119 yards and two touchdowns on 14 rushing attempts. Both Mathis and Greene will have a tougher defensive assignment next week when they host Kansas State.
Nov 11, 2022
Set to return Saturday
Mathis (undisclosed) will be active for Saturday's game against Oklahoma, Sam Cogliano of Gold and Blue Nation reports.
ANALYSIS
Mathis missed two straight games due to an undisclosed injury but is expected to return to the lineup Saturday. The redshirt sophomore is averaging an impressive five yards per carry and has five touchdowns in seven games this season. He'll figure to immediately be heavily involved in the rushing attack while Justin Johnson returns to a complimentary role.
Nov 5, 2022
Out again Saturday
Mathis (undisclosed) didn't travel with the team for Saturday's game versus Iowa State, Blue Gold News reports.
ANALYSIS
Mathis will miss his second consecutive game due to an undisclosed injury. The redshirt sophomore has tallied 99 carries for 492 yards and five touchdowns in seven games this season. Justin Johnson should receive the bulk of the carries Saturday with CJ Donaldson (leg) out for the season.
Oct 25, 2022
Will not play against TCU
Coach Neal Brown said that Mathis (undisclosed) will not play in Saturday's game against TCU, Mike J Asti of WVSportsNow reports.
ANALYSIS
It's unclear what the nature of Mathis' injury is. He is coming off a game in which he had seven carries for 33 yards. CJ Donaldson made his return from a concussion last week and will be relied on to carry the ball more against the Horned Frogs with Mathis out.
Oct 23, 2022
Minimal production in loss
Mathis notched seven carries for 33 yards during Saturday's 48-10 loss against Texas Tech.
ANALYSIS
Mathis had a tough day behind an injured offensive line. His teammate, CJ Donaldson, made his return from a concussion and totaled just 40 yards on 14 touches. West Virginia will look to get back on track against undefeated TCU next week.
Oct 15, 2022
Huge game against the Bears
Mathis accrued 22 rushes for 163 yards and two touchdowns and reeled in his only target for nine yards during Thursday's 43-40 victory over the Baylor.
ANALYSIS
Mathis had a career-day on the ground and took full advantage of getting his starting job back with CJ Donaldson in the concussion protocol. Even with Donaldson emerging before his injury, Mathis had never received less than 20 percent of the team's carries. Against Baylor, he received a season-high 59 percent which suggests that Mathis should be added in most fantasy formats. He'll have an excellent opportunity at Texas Tech next week.
Oct 2, 2022
Rushing score against Longhorns
Mathis rushed for 24 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries while also grabbing a six-yard catch in Saturday's 38-20 loss at Texas.
ANALYSIS
Mathis was able to record his third touchdown of the season despite averaging just 2.0 yards per carry. It's worth noting that CJ Donaldson was forced out of the game with a head injury. If Donaldson is forced to miss time, Mathis will split carries with Justin Johnson who is another impressive young back for the Mountaineers. West Virginia is on a bye next week before hosting Baylor on Oct. 13.
Sep 24, 2022
Slides down the depth chart
Mathis rushed for 38 yards on nine carries in Thursday's 33-10 win at Virginia Tech.
ANALYSIS
Mathis was able to record 4.2 yards per carry, however, he saw teammate CJ Donaldson go over 100 yards for the third time in four games. Donaldson has taken over the top spot in the backfield and Mathis now will battle with sophomore Justin Johnson for additional carries as a reserve back. West Virginia will play at Texas next week.
Sep 18, 2022
Multiple TDs for the first time
Mathis rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries in Saturday's 65-7 win over Towson.
ANALYSIS
Mathis recorded multiple touchdowns for the first time in his career as he had just a single touchdown in his previous 23 games. While he has received at least 16 carries in each of the Mountaineers' first three games, he is no doubt sharing the backfield with CJ Donaldson who had nine carries for 101 yards and three touchdowns. Look for both Mathis and Donaldson to be involved against Virginia Tech on Thursday night.
Sep 10, 2022
Leads backfield with 15 carries
Mathis rushed for 54 yards on a team-high 15 carries in Saturday's 55-42 loss to Kansas.
ANALYSIS
While Mathis did lead the backfield with 15 carries, it was fellow back CJ Donaldson who recorded a pair of rushing score on his 13 carries. It's very possible that Donaldson takes over the starting job if the Mountaineers continue to struggle with winning games and if Donaldson continues to outperform Mathis. Both backs should have productive weeks against Towson next week.
Sep 3, 2022
18 total touches in season debut
Mathis rushed for 71 yards on 16 carries while catching his only two targets for negative seven yards in Thursday's 38-31 loss at Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
Mathis appeared to be the lead back for the Mountaineers, however, it was converted tight-end CJ Donaldson who excited the fanbase with seven carries for 125 yards and a touchdown for West Virginia. Look for Mathis to lead the way while the team looks to mix in Donaldson who has a nice combination of size and speed. West Virginia will host Kansas next week.
Nov 28, 2021
First game over century mark
Mathis rushed for 118 yards on 22 carries while catching two of three targets for five yards in Saturday's 34-28 win over Kansas.
ANALYSIS
Mathis recorded his first 100-yard rushing performance as the Mountaineers dominated Kansas in the run-game. Starting running back Leddie Brown had 19 carries for 156 yards and a touchdown. As the back-up, Mathis has 256 yards on 59 carries during the 2021 season. West Virginia will play in a bowl game.
Sep 15, 2021
Tallies 20 yards in 2021 debut
Mathis (undisclosed) rushed seven times for 20 yards during Saturday's game versus West Virginia.
ANALYSIS
Mathis is back as the Mountaineers clear No. 2 option out of the backfield behind Leddie Brown after missing out on the opener due to injury. He would be next in line to take the lead role should Brown miss any time but isn't likely to see enough reps as a backup to warrant fantasy consideration most weeks.
Sep 11, 2021
Taking part in warmups
Mathis (undisclosed) is participating in warmups ahead of Saturday's clash with LIU, Blue Gold News reports.
ANALYSIS
Mathis was hopeful to rejoin the backfield mix this week after sitting out the opener and appears to be on a path to do just that. He will likely serve as a distant No. 2 in the Mountaineers backfield to star back Leddy Brown.
Sep 10, 2021
Hopeful to play
Head coach Neal Brown said earlier this week he's hopeful Mathis (undisclosed) will play Saturday, Schuyler Callihan of Sports Illustrated reports.
ANALYSIS
Mathis was unable to go for last week's season opener after initially appearing on the depth chart. It's unclear what the 5-11 back is dealing with but his status for Saturday's game likely won't be known until shortly before kickoff.
Sep 4, 2021
Likely out Saturday
Mathis (undisclosed) is not expected to play Saturday against Maryland, Blue and Gold News reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Mathis was listed on the depth chart earlier in the week, it now appears he won't be able to go Saturday. Justin Johnson stands to see backup duties behind Leddie Brown.
Sep 2, 2021
Ready to go Saturday
Mathis (undisclosed) was listed on the team's opening depth chart.
ANALYSIS
Mathis missed some practice during camp for an undisclosed reason, but he is all good to go for the season opener against Maryland.
Aug 18, 2021
Misses practice
Mathis didn't take part in practice Tuesday, Nick Farrell of WVIllustrated.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mathis' injury is believed to be a minor one, so it's unlikely to cost him a ton of time. Justin Johnson Jr. reportedly looked good in his place, suggesting the freshman could be third in line for reps behind Mathis and starter Leddie Brown.
Sep 9, 2020
Part of backfield plans
Mathis is expected to be involved in the West Virginia backfield rotation, Cody Nespor of WV Sports Now reports. "The more reps he gets the better he is," coach Neal Brown said of Mathis.
ANALYSIS
Leddie Brown is slated to be the starter but this will be a two-man backfield with Mathis seeing plenty of work as well. Mathis appeared in just one game as a freshman last season, when he recorded four carries for 14 yards and three catches for 16 yards and a score. Look for him to be involved against Eastern Kentucky on Saturday.
