Enters transfer portal
Wilcke is entering the transfer portal, according to his announcement Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Wilcke will look to play football again in 2024. A personal problem prevented him from playing during 2023. Wilcke showed flashes of good upside for Southern Miss during 2022, when he completed 101 passes for 1,163 yards and a 9:9 TD:INT ratio across eight games.

Held off of opening depth chart
Wilcke is not listed on Southern Mississippi's depth chart ahead of Saturday's opener against Alcorn State, Dima Mixon of Rivals.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wilcke missed a portion of fall camp with a personal issue, and he was not listed on Southern Miss's opening depth chart. This is not a death knell on the sophomore quarterback's status, but he appears unlikely to suit up for the contest. Wilcke appeared in eight games last season, throwing for 1,163 yards (101-of-176), nine touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Out with personal issue
Southern Miss' head coach Will Hall said Monday that Wilcke is not with the team due to a personal family issue, Andrew Abadie of PineBeltSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hall did not give a timeline on when he expects Wilcke to train with the team again. For now, his availability status is questionable heading into Southern Miss' upcoming game Sept. 2 against Alcorn State.

Trouble with picks
Wilcke went 18-for-25 for 187 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions against Texas State.
ANALYSIS
Wilcke has taken over as Southern Miss' starter but has taken some lumps as a freshman. He has thrown multiple interceptions in three straight games and has gone over the 200-yard mark just once in six games. Southern Mississippi takes on Louisiana on Thursday.

Sticking as starter
Wilcke will start Saturday against Tulane, David Eckert of The Hattiesburg American reports.
ANALYSIS
Wilcke made his Southern Miss debut against Miami in Week 2 and threw two touchdowns. He was less impressive in Week 3 against Northwestern State, going 9-for-18 for 102 yards and a touchdown. Still, he will remain as the starter heading into the Week 4 matchup with Tulane.

Splitting first team reps
Wilcke split first team reps with QB Ty Keyes during Tuesday's practice, someone reports.
ANALYSIS
With Keyes sidelined during the team's Week 2 contest against Miami with an undisclosed injury, Wilcke stepped in as the Golden Eagles' starting quarterback and completed 16 of 27 passes for 207 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the 30-7 loss to the Hurricanes. If Wilcke is indeed called upon to make a second consecutive start, he'll compete against an exploitable Northwestern State defense, as they've allowed 47 points to both of their opponents during the team's first two contests. Expect Southern Miss to name their starting pass-thrower sometime Wednesday.
