PointsBet Wins Sports Betting License in Virginia

A partnership between PointsBet and Colonial Downs will offer online sports betting in Virginia. They were awarded the temporary supplier license by the Virginia Lottery. A launch date has not been decided yet but this is good news for sports betting fans as PointsBet will make their sports betting market more competitive.

PointsBet to Launch Online Sports Betting in Virginia

Australian-based PointBet is a big name in the online gambling space. Known in the industry as PointsBet Holdings Ltd, they develop online platforms. From spread betting and fixed odds trading platforms to online sports bookmaking services for sports and racing. They have now formed a partnership with Colonial Downs that will allow them to offer online wagering in Virginia. They are able to do this after being granted approval by the Virginia Lottery.

Colonial Downs operates Rosie’s Gaming Emporiums in a few different locations around the state including their capital Richmond. Rosie’s Gaming Emporiums offers some of the best horse racing gaming technology on top of full-card simulcasting. Now that they have formed this partnership with PointsBet, they will now be able to add sports betting to their portfolio of offerings.

PointsBet Footprint in the U.S Getting Bigger

With this deal in Virginia, PointsBet now offers online sports betting in eight different states. In terms of Virginia, they are now the 11th sportsbook operator in the state. PointsBet is available in Indiana, Illinois, Colorado, Michigan, Iowa, West Virginia, and New Jersey. Mobile sports betting started in Virginia back in January of 2021.

They are also an official sports betting partner of NBC Sports which is very relevant in Virginia. NBC Sports Washington shows Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards games locally. PointsBet will obviously be able to leverage that deal in terms of marketing and media opportunities which would benefit both entities.

As part of their agreement, PointsBet will use NBC Sports for year-round, multi-platform media across a variety of events. This will include exclusive game-day integrations across NBC Sports Washington’s regional broadcast. Another feature that will see PointsBet make huge profits is its fully functional Spanish platform. They will use that in order to further their reach with marketing opportunities available via Telemundo and Telemundo Deportes broadcast stations.

Virginia Sports Betting Market Very Competitive

For sports betting fans, the worst possible thing that can happen. Less competition means that line shopping isn’t really possible. In order to make long-term profits, you need a competitive market or else you are the mercy of the sportsbook. PointsBet is available in Virginia, they have joined Barstool Sportsbook, BetMGM, Bally Bet, DraftKings, FanDuel, Golden Nugget, BetRivers, Caesars, WynnBET, and Unibet. That makes Virginia one of the strongest most competitive markets in the country which is a win for sports betting fans in the state.
