Strong again in no-decision
Snell allowed four hits and two walks while striking out seven over six scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Snell was again sharp, firing his fifth scoreless outing of six or more innings in his last six starts. He ended up with a second straight no-decision after the Giants got to Robert Suarez in the eighth inning. Snell lowered his ERA to 2.25 with a 1.19 WHIP and 234:99 K:BB through 180 innings over 32 starts this season. He's tentatively lined up for a road start versus the White Sox this weekend, but the Padres may not push their ace for one more outing since their playoff hopes are hanging by a thread after Monday's loss.

Fires seven hitless frames
Snell did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing four walks over seven scoreless innings against Colorado. He struck out 10.
ANALYSIS
The Padres got another incredible outing from Snell on Tuesday, fanning 10 Rockies across seven innings without allowing a single hit. However, the Padres failed to put up any runs until the ninth inning, eradicating Snell's hopes for a fifth consecutive win. Over his last five appearances (32 innings), Snell owns a 0.56 ERA and a 43:17 K:BB. He'll look to continue his hot streak during his next start, which is projected to come against the Giants at Oracle Park early next week.
Sep 14, 2023
Stellar versus Dodgers
Snell (14-9) earned the win Wednesday over the Dodgers, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out eight over six scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
Snell picked up his seventh straight quality start, and he's kept runs off the board in three of his last four outings. This sharp start lowered his ERA to 2.43 with a 1.22 WHIP and 217:93 K:BB through 167 innings over 30 starts this season. It was also the first time since June 22 that Snell didn't walk multiple batters. The southpaw is projected for a home start versus the Rockies next week.
Sep 8, 2023
Strikes out eight in win
Snell (13-9) allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eight over six innings to earn the win over the Astros on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Snell gave up runs for the first time in three starts, but it was still his sixth consecutive quality start. Over his last three starts, he's posted a 25:12 K:BB across 19 innings. Despite a walk rate that's been among the highest in the majors all year, Snell continues to put together solid outings with a 2.52 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 209:92 K:BB through 161 innings over 29 starts. The southpaw is projected for a challenging road start versus the Dodgers next week.
Sep 3, 2023
Throws six scoreless innings
Snell (12-9) allowed three hits and four walks while striking out eight over six scoreless innings to earn the win over the Giants on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Snell has walked multiple batters in 13 straight starts, but he hasn't given up more than three runs in any of them. In eight of those starts, he's walked four or more batters. The southpaw's 5.2 BB/9 is tied for the worst of his career with his rookie season, but he's somehow managed to be effective anyway with a major-league best 2.50 ERA. He's also at 201 strikeouts through 155 innings, which makes this Snell's second 200-strikeout campaign. He's projected to make his next start in Houston.
Aug 28, 2023
Fans nine in win
Snell (11-9) allowed two hits and five walks over seven shutout frames Monday, striking out nine and picking up a win over the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Snell's command was shaky yet again but he continues to dominate. It was his first scoreless appearance since July 30 and he lowered his ERA to 2.60 through 149 innings. Over his last 18 outings, Snell has posted a terrific 1.38 ERA with a 145:58 K:BB. The NL Cy Young candidate is currently expected to face the Giants at home this weekend.
Aug 23, 2023
No run support in loss
Snell (10-9) allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out eight over six innings to take the loss Tuesday versus the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
The Padres mustered just three hits and two walks for the game, giving Snell virtually no run support. He was able to come away with his third straight quality start, but he's started to come back to earth with 10 runs allowed over his last 23 innings. For the season, the southpaw has a 2.73 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 184:80 K:BB through 142 innings over 26 starts. Snell is projected for a favorable road start in St. Louis early next week.
Aug 17, 2023
Secures 10th win
Snell (10-8) allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings to earn the win Wednesday over the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
It was another quality start for Snell, who has given up two or fewer runs in all but one of his last 16 outings. The southpaw was able to limit the damage to a sacrifice fly in the first inning and a Ryan Mountcastle solo home run in the sixth. Snell is now at a 2.65 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 176:78 K:BB through 136 innings over 25 starts this season. He's projected for a home start versus the Marlins next week.
Aug 5, 2023
Strikes out eight in no-decision
Snell allowed three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out eight over five innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Snell's impressive run of 13 starts without allowing more than two runs came to a close, though it happened against a tough division rival. The southpaw was in line for the loss until the Padres rallied ahead in the eighth inning. Snell's 1.30 WHIP and 164:72 K:BB aren't the most encouraging marks, but he's allowed just 12 homers in 23 starts this season to offset an ugly 5.2 BB/9. That's helped him maintain a 2.61 ERA through 124 innings on the year. Snell is lined up for another challenging start on the road in Arizona during next weekend's series.
Jul 31, 2023
Punches out nine
Snell (8-8) allowed one unearned run on four hits and four walks over five innings Sunday, striking out nine and earning a win against Texas.
ANALYSIS
Snell has been outstanding for the last two months despite his inflating walk rate. He registered a 42:26 K:BB through 32 July innings but gave up just two earned runs. He's given up two or fewer runs in 13 straight starts, resulting in a terrific 0.73 ERA with a 108:41 K:BB through 74 frames. Snell's next outing is projected to be at home against the Dodgers.
Jul 26, 2023
Walks five in win
Snell (7-8) earned the win Tuesday versus the Pirates after he gave up one run on two hits and five walks over six innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Snell's command was a bit scattershot as he threw just 54 of 102 pitches for a strike and issued three-plus walks for the fifth straight outing, but he still limited Pittsburgh to a single run. The left-hander has walked 22 batters across 27 frames during that five-start stretch, but he's somehow managed to give up just a pair of runs. It remains to be seen how long Snell can continue to walk the tightrope like that, and a likely matchup with the Rangers this weekend will be a tougher test.
Jul 21, 2023
Hit with tough loss
Snell (6-8) took the loss Thursday, allowing one run on five hits and seven walks over five innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Snell managed to limit the Blue Jays to one run over five frames despite issuing a season-high seven walks. Unfortunately, the Padres' offense was unable to back him with any run support as the lefty went on to suffer his eighth loss of the season. Snell has allowed only one run over four July starts, lowering his season ERA to 2.67 in the process.
Jul 16, 2023
Strong start wasted
Snell didn't factor into the decision in a 6-4 loss to the Phillies during the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, allowing three hits and three walks over five scoreless innings. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw extended his scoreless streak to 21 innings with another dazzling performance and exited the game with the Padres ahead 3-0, but the bullpen quickly squandered the lead. Snell hasn't been scored upon since the first inning of a June 28 outing against the Pirates and hasn't given up more than two runs in a start since May 25, posting a stunning 0.62 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 91:25 K:BB through 58 innings over that latter stretch while going 5-1. Not much has gone right for San Diego this season -- the team sits five games below .500 after getting swept in Saturday's twin bill -- but Snell re-discovering his Cy Young form has been one of the bright spots heading into the second half.
Jul 9, 2023
Throws six scoreless innings
Snell (6-7) allowed a hit and three walks while striking out 11 over six scoreless innings to earn the win Saturday over the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Snell had a pedestrian start to the season, then surged to end the first half. Over his last nine starts, he gave up just four runs with an 84:22 K:BB over 53 innings. He's walked multiple batters in seven of those outings, and his 1.22 WHIP is unlikely to be able to sustain a 2.85 ERA over the rest of the campaign, but he's been in peak form otherwise. His first start after the All-Star break is likely to be against the Phillies.
Jul 4, 2023
Works around wildness
Snell (5-7) allowed seven hits and four walks while striking out seven over five scoreless innings to earn the win Monday over the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Snell threw just 55 of 100 pitches for strikes in a wild start, but the Padres' offense gave him plenty of run support early on. His streak of four straight starts with double-digit strikeouts came to an end, but he's gone eight outings in a row without allowing more than two runs. Snell has a 3.03 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 121:46 K:BB through 92 innings across 17 starts. The 30-year-old is projected for a home start versus the Mets this weekend.
Jun 29, 2023
10 strikeouts in loss
Snell (4-7) took the loss Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings in a 7-1 loss against the Pirates. He struck out 10.
ANALYSIS
Snell struck out at least 10 batters for a fourth consecutive outing and has given up two or fewer runs in seven straight appearances. During that stretch, he's posted a 0.86 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 66:15 K:BB across 42 innings. Despite taking the loss Wednesday, Snell is still in the midst of a stellar stretch and will look to maintain his strong play during his next start, which is tentatively scheduled during a three-game homestand versus the Angels.
Jun 23, 2023
Continues dominance in win
Snell (4-6) earned the win Thursday, allowing three hits over six scoreless innings against the Giants while striking out 11.
ANALYSIS
Snell's red-hot June run continued Thursday as the lefty pitched six innings of shutout ball for the second straight start and third time in four starts this month. The only real trouble he faced on the afternoon came in the fifth when he allowed back-to-back singles with two outs in the inning. However, he got himself out of the jam by striking out Bryce Johnson to end the inning and then proceeded to strike out the side in the sixth to finish with double-digit strikeouts for the third consecutive game. Snell now holds a ridiculous 0.36 ERA through four June starts to go along with a 43:6 K:BB ratio.
Jun 17, 2023
Excellent against former team
Snell (3-6) allowed two hits and three walks while striking out 12 over six shutout innings to earn the win Saturday over the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Snell's excellent stretch continued for a fifth straight start, and this one came against his old team. Over his last 30 innings, the southpaw has allowed just two runs while posting a 45:13 K:BB. He's had 12 strikeouts in each of his last two starts, and he's enjoying some of his best pitching in years. Saturday's gem lowered his ERA to 3.48 with a 1.29 WHIP and 93:40 K:BB through 75 innings over 14 starts. Snell's next outing is projected to be on the road in San Francisco next week.
Jun 15, 2023
Cleared for next start
Snell (ankle) is listed as the Padres' probable starting pitcher for Saturday's game against the Rays at Petco Park.
ANALYSIS
Snell contended with swelling in his left ankle after being struck by a comebacker during his most recent start Sunday in Colorado, but the injury nor pitching at Coors Field prevented him from delivering his best outing of the season. The veteran southpaw set season highs in both innings pitched (seven) and strikeouts (12) while allowing one run on just three hits and one walk. After a middling start to the season, Snell has been rolling over his last four turns through the rotation, pitching to a 0.75 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 33:10 K:BB in 24 innings over that stretch. With the swollen ankle apparently not proving to be too bothersome during his between-starts bullpen session, Snell looks like he'll face no restrictions Saturday while facing off against his former team for the first time.
Jun 11, 2023
Dealing with swelling in ankle
Snell was removed from Sunday's game against the Rockies due to swelling in his ankle, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell was hit by a comebacker on his left ankle in the bottom of the seventh inning and initially remained in the game, but he was replaced in the bottom of the eighth due to swelling. However, the southpaw underwent X-rays that came back negative and said after the game that he's fine. He allowed a run on three hits and no walks while striking out 12 in seven innings prior to his removal, and it certainly seems possible that he'll be able to make his next turn through the rotation.
Jun 6, 2023
Tosses six scoreless frames
Snell (2-6) earned the win over the Cubs on Monday, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out eight batters over six scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
Snell didn't resolve his season-long command issues -- he handed out multiple free passes for the sixth straight outing -- but he yielded just two hits, both of which were singles. The left-hander also racked up 17 whiffs and fell one shy of his season high with eight strikeouts. Snell appears to be finding his groove, as he has posted back-to-back scoreless starts, during which he has surrendered just five hits and tallied 15 strikeouts over 12 innings. His ERA was up to 5.40 through May 19, but with three strong outings since then, it now stands at a much more respectable 4.06.
May 25, 2023
Solid in no-decision
Snell did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing one run on four hits and four walks over five innings against Washington. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Snell wasn't at his best Thursday, but he was able to work through traffic, holding the Nats to one first-inning run while striking out six. It's certainly a step in the right direction for Snell after he allowed six runs in a loss to Boston in his previous outing. Still, it's been a tough start to the year for the left-hander -- he's 1-6 with a 5.04 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 54:31 K:BB through 10 starts (50 innings).
May 20, 2023
Takes sixth loss
Snell (1-6) took the loss Friday, allowing six runs on five hits and two walks over four innings against the Red Sox. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Snell continues to struggle, as he's currently on pace to have the worst season of his career by far. This was also the former Ray's worst appearance of the season, ballooning his ERA from 4.61 to 5.40. The southpaw is tentatively slated to face the Nationals on the road in his next start.
May 13, 2023
Turns in quality outing
Snell did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks over six innings against the Dodgers. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Snell is now starting to turn a corner after a rough start to the year. The southpaw has just a 3.50 ERA in the month of May, and this was just his second start of the year where he did not allow a home run. Fantasy managers can start to feel a bit more confident in him heading into his next tentative start against the Royals.
May 7, 2023
Tough-luck loss Saturday
Snell (1-5) allowed two runs on a hit and three walks while striking out six over six innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Snell was unlucky Saturday -- the only hit he surrendered was a two-run home run to Chris Taylor in the fourth inning. The Padres' offense mustered a mere one run on five hits and three walks. Snell's earned quality starts in his last two outings, but he's also given up at least one homer in six straight appearances. He's at a 4.89 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 39:21 K:BB through 35 innings over seven starts this season. The southpaw is lined up for a rematch with the Dodgers in Los Angeles next week.
May 2, 2023
Earns first win
Snell (1-4) allowed three runs on eight hits over six innings Monday, striking out seven and earning a win over the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Snell coughed up a two-run double to Stuart Fairchild in the third inning followed by Nick Senzel's solo shot in the fourth. It was the fifth straight game in which Snell gave up at least one home run. The 30-year-old lefty forced 17 whiffs, his highest total since recording 19 in his season debut. He picked up his first win and lowered his season ERA to 5.28 alongside a 33:18 K:BB through 29 frames. Snell is currently lined up to face the Dodgers at home this weekend.
Apr 25, 2023
Remains winless with loss to Cubs
Snell (0-4) took the loss Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits and five walks over five innings against the Cubs. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Snell once again was unable to pick up a win, but that had more to do with the lack of offense behind him then how he pitched against the Cubs on Wednesday. The southpaw allowed a two-run homer to Yan Gomes in the second inning, but Snell was able to keep Chicago off the board from that point on. Unfortunately for him and the Padres, the San Diego offense was unable to reach the scoreboard against Justin Steele and the Cubs' bullpen. Control was once again an issue for Snell, however, as he has walked at least three batters in four consecutive starts and issued 18 overall free passes in 23 innings.
Apr 19, 2023
Loses third game in four starts
Snell (0-3) took the loss Tuesday, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over five innings in a 8-1 loss against the Braves. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Snell had his best outing of the young season, but the Padres' lack of run support led to him taking another loss. The southpaw gave up his lowest run and hit totals of the year, a welcome sight for fantasy managers. However, the eight-year veteran hasn't pitched more than five innings in a game this year, and has given up multiple runs in each start. The Seattle native will look to get back to his usual good form against the Diamondbacks in a few days.
Apr 12, 2023
Control issues Wednesday
Snell (0-2) took the loss Wednesday, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits and five walks over five-plus innings as the Padres fell 5-2 to the Mets. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw threw only 53 of 100 pitches for strikes, and after issuing free passes to Jeff McNeil and Tommy Pham to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, Snell got the hook. The 30-year-old has a 6.92 ERA and 16:10 K:BB through three starts and 13 innings to kick off the season, and he'll need to find the plate more often if he's going to trim down his ratios. Snell will try to get on track in his next outing, likely to come early next week at home against Atlanta.
Apr 7, 2023
Can't get out of fourth inning
Snell pitched 3.2 innings against Atlanta on Thursday, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks while striking out two batters. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Snell gave up a single run in each of the first and third innings, but a Matt Carpenter three-run homer in the top of the fourth staked him to a 3-2 lead. The left-hander was unable to hold that advantage, however, as he allowed five batters to reach base -- the final three by walk -- in the bottom of the frame before being forced to exit. Control has long been an issue for Snell, and he's off to a poor start in that regard this season with five walks over his first eight innings. He's also given up seven earned runs, and though his strikeout potential is tantalizing, he's not going to be able to go very deep into games if he's unable to get the free passes under control.
Mar 31, 2023
Fans nine in Opening Day loss
Snell (0-1) took the loss Thursday against the Rockies, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk over 4.1 innings. He struck out nine.
ANALYSIS
Snell's season debut echoed a trend for him in recent campaigns -- he struck out plenty of batters but threw so many pitches (93) that he was unable to go deep into the game. To the left-hander's credit, he issued just one walk, and two of the three runs against him came after he departed the contest. Snell should be a great source of punchouts again this season as long as he stays healthy, but he hasn't posted an ERA better than 3.24 or a WHIP better than 1.20 since his Cy Young 2018 campaign.
Mar 24, 2023
Set for Opening Day start
Snell will start Opening Day versus the Rockies on Thursday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
With both Joe Musgrove (toe) and Yu Darvish both unavailable, Snell will get the nod against Colorado. The left-hander rounded back into form last season after a disappointing first campaign with San Diego in 2021 and he'll look get off to a good start in 2023 on Thursday.
Mar 23, 2023
Expected to start Opening Day
Snell appears lined up to serve as the Opening Day starter for the Padres, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Joe Musgrove (toe) will miss at least the first week of the season and Yu Darvish is still in buildup mode following his run with Team Japan in the World Baseball Classic, so the Opening Day call figures to go to Snell. An official decision is expected Friday. Snell, 30, registered a 3.38 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 171:51 K:BB across 128 regular-season innings (24 starts) for San Diego in 2022.
Mar 15, 2023
Good results so far this spring
Snell has pitched in two Cactus League contests for the Padres, allowing three runs on four hits while posting a 6:2 K:BB over seven innings.
ANALYSIS
Snell has allowed just six baserunners through his first seven innings, but he's been stung by two long balls against him. Homers weren't a big problem for the lefty last season -- he gave up 11 over 128 frames -- so there's no reason to draw any implications from the small spring sample. Snell historically doesn't go deep into games and tends to issue too many walks, but he can pile up strikeouts and pitched well enough last season (3.38 ERA, 2.79 FIP, 1.20 WHIP) to justify a selection in the first third of fantasy drafts.
Oct 19, 2022
Earns win in Game 2
Snell earned the win after five innings of work Wednesday during Game 2 of the NLCS, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six in the 8-5 win over the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Snell gave up all four of his earned runs in the second inning when the Phillies piled on a few bloop singles as well as a fly ball into the sun that Juan Soto was unable to keep his eyes on. Despite the tough luck in the second, Snell was able to settle down and give the Padres a chance to come back, which they did. The 29-year-old lefty has always put up solid postseason numbers, so it is no surprise that he was able to settle down and give the Padres a chance to win. Snell has a career 3.36 ERA and 61 strikeouts in the postseason spanning 48.2 innings.
Oct 11, 2022
Gets nod for Game 3
Snell will start in Game 3 of the Padres' NLDS matchup with the Dodgers on Friday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
After allowing two earned runs and six walks over 3.1 innings in Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Mets, Snell will get a chance to bounce back against the Dodgers in Game 3 of the NLDS. His most recent outing against the Dodgers came on Sept. 27 with a five-inning shutout performance in which he allowed just one hit and struck out six batters.
Oct 6, 2022
Starting Game 2
Snell will start Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series on Saturday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Yu Darvish is getting the starting nod for Friday's series opener, and Snell will draw the Game 2 start over Joe Musgrove, who is a likely candidate to start Game 3 if needed. Snell was dominant over his final four regular-season starts, posting a 0.72 ERA, 32:6 K:BB and 0.64 WHIP in 25 innings over that stretch. He last pitched Sunday, so he'll be fully rested for Saturday's matchup.
Oct 2, 2022
Takes loss despite quality start
Snell (8-10) took the loss during Sunday's 2-1 defeat at the hands of the White Sox, allowing one run on three hits and one walk with six strikeouts in six innings.
ANALYSIS
Snell held Chicago in check until the sixth inning, when a one-out Elvis Andrus solo shot put him in line for the loss. The 29-year-old tossed 60 of 103 pitches for strikes with 12 of the swinging variety and has surrendered one earned run or fewer in six of his last seven starts, lowering his ERA from 4.14 to 3.38 in the process. Snell concludes the campaign with a 3.38 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with 171 strikeouts in 128 innings across 24 starts. His 12.2 K/9 rank second among players with at least 70 innings.
Sep 28, 2022
Delivers five scoreless frames
Snell didn't factor into the decision during Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Dodgers, allowing one hit and walking three while recording six strikeouts in five scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
Snell limited the damage to four baserunners across five innings and departed with a two-run lead, but Los Angeles immediately tied the game upon his exit. The 29-year-old continued his excellent performance of late and possesses a 1.80 ERA with 49 strikeouts across 35 innings during his last six turns. Snell seems to have found his stride a bit later than fantasy managers would've preferred though he should be good for one more start this season, tentatively scheduled to come Sunday against the White Sox.
Sep 22, 2022
Fans 13 over seven shutout frames
Snell (8-9) earned the win over St. Louis on Wednesday, pitching seven scoreless innings during which he allowed two hits and two walks while striking out 13 batters.
ANALYSIS
Snell carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and he picked up the first two outs in that frame before Albert Pujols ended the bid at history with a single. Juan Yepez followed with another hit, but Snell finished the inning by striking out Paul DeJong. The lefty hurler fired a season-high 117 pitches and tied a career high with 13 punchouts. Though he's still under .500 on the season and holds a just-decent 3.62 ERA, Snell is peaking at the right time. Over his past five appearances, he's notched four quality starts while posting a 2.10 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 43:9 K:BB over 30 innings.
Sep 17, 2022
Cruises to seventh win
Snell (7-9) allowed one run on four hits and struck out seven without issuing a walk in seven innings to earn the win Friday over the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Snell's lone mistake was a Christian Walker solo home run in the fourth inning. Beyond that, Snell turned in his longest outing of the year and one of his best, as well as his third quality start in his last four games. The lefty trimmed his ERA to 3.85 with a 1.29 WHIP and 146:45 K:BB across 110 innings through 21 starts this year. He's projected for a home start versus the Cardinals next week.
Sep 11, 2022
Falls apart in fifth frame
Snell (6-9) took the loss against the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out five batters.
ANALYSIS
Snell was fine through four innings, allowing just a third-inning run and four hits. However, he was pummeled for four runs without recording an out in the fifth, with the big blow coming on a three-run double off the bat of Trea Turner. Snell had allowed just one run over his past 12 innings coming into the start, but he was unable to continue that momentum and took his career-worst ninth loss of the campaign. The left-hander's season ERA rose to 4.02 as a result of the poor outing.
Sep 6, 2022
Punches out 10 in loss
Snell (6-8) took the loss against Arizona on Monday, allowing one run on four hits and one walk while striking out 10 batters over six innings.
ANALYSIS
Though Snell was tagged with the loss, he picked up his second straight quality start and eighth of the campaign. The left-hander also notched double-digit strikeouts for the fourth time this season, and he racked up an impressive 20 swinging strikes. Snell has rebounded from a rough start against Cleveland on Aug. 24 to allow just one run over 12 innings while posting an 18:4 K:BB across his subsequent pair of starts.
Aug 31, 2022
Throws six scoreless innings
Snell (6-7) earned the win Tuesday over the Padres, allowing four hits, three walks and a hit batsman over six scoreless innings while striking out eight.
ANALYSIS
Snell was locked in for a start against an NL West rival, bouncing back from a six-run disaster against Cleveland last Wednesday. This was his third scoreless start in 18 outings this season. He got his ERA back under 4.00 (3.97) with a 1.33 WHIP and 124:41 K:BB through 93 innings. Snell is tentatively projected for a home start versus the Diamondbacks next week.
Aug 24, 2022
Allows six runs
Snell (5-7) took the loss Wednesday, allowing six runs on eight hits and four strikeouts over 3.1 innings against the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Snell surrendered two home runs to third baseman Jose Ramirez, the second of which was followed by a home run from Oscar Gonzalez on the next at-bat. In the six starts prior to this blowup, the lefty had been enjoying an outstanding stretch with a 1.60 ERA and 46 strikeouts over 33.2 innings. The 29-year-old has been slightly worse at home with a 3-5 record and 4.42 ERA in 53 innings compared to a 2-2 record and 3.97 ERA in 34 innings on the road.

Goes five innings Friday
Snell allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven in five innings, taking a no-decision versus the Nationals on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Snell hadn't allowed multiple runs in any of his five previous starts and only once in his last eight, but the Nationals got to him in the fourth and fifth innings in this contest. The southpaw has struck out at least seven in five straight outings. For the season, he's posted a 3.76 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 112:38 K:BB across 83.2 innings through 16 starts. Snell is lined up for a favorable road start in Kansas City next week.

Strikes out 10 in win
Snell (5-6) allowed three hits and no walks while striking out 10 in six scoreless innings to earn the win over the Nationals on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Snell gave up five run in 3.2 innings during his final start prior to the All-Star break, but he's been dominant in his five starts since then and has posted a 4-1 record across that span. The southpaw has posted a 0.94 ERA, 39:5 K:BB and 0.91 WHIP in 28.2 innings over his five starts to begin the second half and tentatively lines up for a rematch against the Nationals at home Friday.

Handed tough loss
Snell (4-6) allowed one run on six hits and two walks over 5.2 innings Monday, striking out eight and taking a loss against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Snell loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth inning but escaped the threat after giving up just one run. Aside from that, the 29-year-old southpaw didn't face much resistance from San Francisco's lineup. He's now allowed one run or fewer in four consecutive starts and six of his last seven dating back to the start of July. During that stretch, Snell has posted a 57:17 K:BB while lowering his season ERA from 5.60 to 3.96. He'll look to continue his dominant stretch in Washington this weekend.

Continues turnaround on mound
Snell (4-5) earned the win over Colorado on Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits and no walks while striking out nine batters over six innings.
ANALYSIS
Snell was dominant in the victory, racking up 14 swinging strikes and holding the Rockies to just one extra-base hit. The southpaw capitalized on San Diego's five-run first inning to cruise to his third straight win and fourth over his past five contests. That has brought his record up to 4-5 on the season after he opened the campaign without a victory through his initial eight starts. Over his past three appearances, Snell has posted a 1.06 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 21:3 K:BB across 17 frames.

Quiets Twins in third win
Snell (3-5) earned the win Friday over the Twins. He allowed one run on four hits and a walk while striking out seven in six innings.
ANALYSIS
The Twins' lone run in the 10-1 contest was Byron Buxton's solo home run off Snell in the fourth inning. All three of Snell's wins this season have come in July -- he's gone 3-0 this month with eight runs allowed in 25.2 innings, a notable improvement compared to how he started the campaign. He owns a 4.43 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 78:34 K:BB across 61 innings in 12 starts overall. The 29-year-old southpaw is projected for a home start against the Rockies next week as he looks to carry his strong form into August.
Jul 24, 2022
Earns win with five shutout frames
Snell (2-5) picked up the win over the Mets on Saturday, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five batters over five scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
Snell needed 85 pitches to get through five frames, but he yielded only one extra-base hit and kept New York off the scoreboard. The southpaw issued multiple walks for the 11th time in 11 starts this season, but he fared much better than in his six-walk, five-run , 3.2-inning outing against Colorado in his final start before the All-Star break. Snell's control issues and 4.75 ERA have made him a risky pitcher in fantasy this season, but he's been coming around with two wins and three outings of one run or fewer over his past four starts.
Jul 15, 2022
Extreme control issues
Snell allowed five earned runs on four hits and six walks while striking out five across 3.2 innings Thursday against the Rockies. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Snell looked sharp in the first inning, retiring the side in order. However, that was the highlight of his outing as he proceeded to give up a season-high six walks and five earned runs. Coors Field does offer some excuse for the poor effort, particularly because Snell entered Thursday's start having allowed only two earned runs across his last 11 innings and two starts. However, he still has a 5.22 ERA and 66:31 K:BB across 50 innings on the season.
Jul 9, 2022
Earns first win
Snell (1-5) allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out 11 over six innings to earn the win Friday versus the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Snell had arguably his best start of the year despite allowing a home run for a third straight outing. This was his second consecutive start with double-digit strikeouts, and the third time this year he's completed six innings. The southpaw is starting to trend in the right direction after allowing only two runs through 11 innings to begin July, and he now has a 4.66 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 61:25 K:BB across 46.1 innings overall. Snell is on track to make his last start of the first half on the road in Colorado next week.
Jul 2, 2022
Strikes out 12 in no-decision
Snell allowed a run on four hits and four walks while striking out 12 in five innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Friday.
ANALYSIS
This was arguably Snell's best start of the year, though he gave up a solo home run to Max Muncy and walked four batters for the second time in eight starts. Snell still remains in search of his first win, as he was outplayed by Dodgers starter Tony Gonsolin in this one. Snell has a 5.13 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 50:23 K:BB across 40.1 innings. He's projected for a home start versus the Giants next week.
Jun 26, 2022
Fades late in loss
Snell (0-5) allowed four runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Snell got through four scoreless innings before allowing the Phillies to put up three runs in the fifth. Jorge Alfaro hit a two-run double to get the Padres within one, but Snell gave one back on Alec Bohm's RBI double in the sixth. The southpaw continues to be on the hunt for his first win, having lost five of his seven starts this year while allowing at least three runs in five of them. He has a 5.60 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 38:19 K:BB across 35.1 innings overall. Snell's projected for a tough road start versus the Dodgers next weekend.
Jun 20, 2022
Still seeks first win
Snell (0-4) took the loss Sunday against the Rockies, allowing five runs on five hits while striking out five and walking four over 4.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Snell has had a rough start to his 2022 campaign, allowing three or more earned runs in four of six appearances. He was mostly inefficient Sunday throwing 49 of 89 pitches for strikes. The lefty also walked a season high four batters in Sunday's game. Snell certainly has some adjustments to make as he will take a 5.46 ERA into his next appearance.
Jun 12, 2022
Posts quality start in no-decision
Snell didn't factor into the decision during Sunday's 4-2 loss to Colorado, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in six innings.
ANALYSIS
Snell retired 12 of 13 Rockies in the first, second, third and sixth innings but struggled in the fourth and fifth, surrendering a combined seven baserunners and two runs in both frames. Through five starts, the 29-year-old possesses a 5.04 ERA and 1.36 WHIP with 29 strikeouts with 13 walks in 25 innings. Snell will go for his first win with a rematch against German Marquez and the Rockies scheduled for next weekend.
Jun 7, 2022
Lasts only four innings in loss
Snell (0-3) took the loss against the Mets on Monday, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out four over four innings.
ANALYSIS
Snell got off to a poor start, allowing five of the first seven batters he faced to reach base as New York took an early 3-0 lead. He bounced back with two straight scoreless frames before the Mets tagged him for another run in the fourth, and he departed after the first two batters reached base (one by error) against him in the fifth. Snell has taken losses in three of his four stats this season, though this was the first time he has given up more than three runs in an outing. He'll look to get in the win column in his next start, which is lined up to come at home against Colorado this weekend.
May 31, 2022
Six strikeouts in no-decision
Snell allowed two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out six in six innings of a 3-2 defeat Tuesday in St. Louis. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Both runs against Snell came in the third inning as he allowed two walks, a double and a sacrifice fly. He settled down over the last three frames and retired the Cardinals in order each inning. It was the lefty's best start of the season and the first time he completed six innings. His next start will likely come early next week against the Mets.
May 25, 2022
Whiffs seven in loss
Snell (0-2) took the loss during Tuesday's 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Brewers, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Snell surrendered only one baserunner through four innings but was stung for a Mike Brosseau solo homer in the fifth and put two on in the sixth before Craig Stammen allowed a Tyrone Taylor three-run home run. The lefty tossed an impressive 104 pitches with 15 swinging strikes in only his second start of the campaign, though both outings have resulted in losses. Snell has permitted six runs on six hits and five walks in nine innings and will go for his first win early next week against St. Louis.
May 19, 2022
Stuck with loss in season debut
Snell (0-1) took the loss Wednesday, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks over 3.2 innings as the Padres fell 3-0 to the Phillies. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw tossed 84 pitches in his first start of the season, but only 46 of them were strikes and he got no help from his offense. Snell's return from a groin injury has pushed MacKenzie Gore and Nick Martinez out of the rotation for now, but he'll need to stay healthy and effective to keep it that way.
May 18, 2022
Activated for season debut
The Padres activated Snell (groin) from the 10-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday in Philadelphia, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell is finally ready to make his 2022 debut for the Padres after he was scratched ahead of what would have been his first start of the season April 10 due to left adductor tightness. The injury ultimately forced an extended trip to the IL, but Snell looks to be healthy again after recently completing a three-start minor-league rehab assignment. He stretched out to five innings and 59 pitches in his final minor-league outing May 10, so Snell should be capable of offering the Padres a decent amount of length Wednesday.
May 15, 2022
Season debut set for Wednesday
Snell (groin) will be activated from the 10-day injured list to start Wednesday against the Phillies, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander was scratched from his start during the opening weekend of the season due to groin soreness, but he's now poised to make his 2022 debut Wednesday in Philadelphia. Snell made three minor-league rehab appearances and threw 59 pitches over five innings during his last outing, so he figures to face some workload limitations in his first couple big-league starts.
May 11, 2022
Solid again in third rehab start
Snell completed five innings for Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and no walks while striking out seven to earn the win.
ANALYSIS
In his third minor-league rehab appearance -- and first at the Triple-A level -- Snell extended to five frames and tossed 59 pitches. The latter number was seven pitches fewer than he threw in his previous rehab outing, but Snell was more effective Tuesday in limiting his opponent to just one run. The Padres haven't yet announced the next step for the left-hander, though manager Bob Melvin has suggested that this was likely his final rehab start, per Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune.
May 9, 2022
Set for third rehab start
Snell is scheduled to make his third rehab start at Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With Snell set to continue his rehab assignment, the Padres will temporarily delay making any changes to their six-man rotation, which will allow back-end arms MacKenzie Gore and Nick Martinez to pick up at least one more start. Considering that Snell built up to four innings and 66 pitches in his last rehab start May 4, he shouldn't face any restrictions with his workload when he makes his return from the 10-day injured list next week for his 2022 debut with the big club. Assuming he comes out of Tuesday's outing with El Paso with no setbacks, Snell could be brought back from the IL to start as early as Sunday's game in Atlanta, though it's possible the Padres wait until next week's series in Philadelphia to add him back into the rotation.
May 5, 2022
Hits 66-pitch mark in rehab start
Snell (groin) made his second minor-league rehab start Wednesday with Single-A Lake Elsinore, covering four innings and striking out eight while giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks.
ANALYSIS
For the second straight rehab outing, Snell tossed four innings, but he built his pitch count up from 44 in his April 28 start to 66 in Wednesday's outing. Though Snell is likely capable of giving the Padres a decent amount of length if they elect to return him from the 10-day injured list early next week, it's possible the organization wants to have him make one more minor-league appearance before slotting back into the rotation. Whenever Snell makes his return to the active roster, the Padres will likely have to remove one of MacKenzie Gore or Nick Martinez from what would be a six-man rotation.
Apr 29, 2022
Dominant in four-inning rehab start
Snell (groin) pitched four scoreless innings for High-A Fort Wayne on Thursday, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out four.
ANALYSIS
In his first minor-league rehab start as he works his way back from a groin injury, Snell threw 44 pitches and allowed only three baserunners. He may need another rehab start to push his pitch count higher, but a return to the big-league rotation in early-to-mid May appears to be likely.
Apr 26, 2022
Slated for rehab outing Thursday
Snell (groin) is scheduled to make a minor-league rehab appearance with High-A Fort Wayne on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Snell tossed 38 pitches in a simulated game Saturday, per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com, and he appears to have come out of that session without experiencing any setbacks. The southpaw hasn't pitched in a game since spring training, as he landed on the injured list in mid-April due to left adductor tightness. Should Snell's rehab appearance Thursday go well, he could make his season debut with San Diego sometime in early May.
Apr 23, 2022
Slated for sim game
Snell (groin) is expected to throw a simulated game Saturday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell went on the 10-day IL after groin tightness prevented him from making a scheduled start April 10. He threw a bullpen session April 19 and is scheduled to face batters in a simulated game Saturday. If that goes well, Snell could return to the Padres by the end of the month.
Apr 17, 2022
Scheduled for side session
Snell (groin) is in line to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Snell wasn't able to avoid the injured list due to his left groin injury, he could be in store for a minimum-length stay on the shelf if his throwing session Tuesday goes according to plan. However, with Snell due to miss a second straight turn through the rotation Wednesday versus the Reds, rookie MacKenzie Gore will pick up at least one more start.
Apr 14, 2022
Officially placed on injured list
Snell (groin) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to April 11.
ANALYSIS
Snell has said that his left adductor tightness is "way more minor" than the issue that he dealt with in 2021, but he'll still be forced at least one turn through the rotation. He'll be eligible to return as early as April 22 since the move was backdated to Monday, but a timetable for his return isn't yet clear. Left-hander MacKenzie Gore was called up to take his place in the rotation.
Apr 13, 2022
Slated to land on IL
Snell (groin) will be placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell was scratched from his scheduled start against the Diamondbacks on Sunday due to groin tightness. Although the southpaw said that the issue is "way more minor" than the groin injury that forced him to miss time late in the 2022 season, he'll still be forced to spend time on the 10-day IL. The move will likely be backdated by a few days, but it's not yet clear when Snell will be able to return to game action.
Apr 12, 2022
Not yet ruled out of next start
Snell (groin) is expected to play catch Tuesday and could still make his next scheduled start against Atlanta on April 15, though a trip to the injured list remains a possibility, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell was scratched from his start against Arizona on Sunday after experiencing tightness in his groin while warming up in the bullpen, but the left-hander later said that the injury is "way more minor" than the groin issue that caused him to miss his final few starts at the end of 2021. He's slated to test the groin by playing catch Tuesday, which could give clarity about whether he's headed for a trip to the injured list. Manager Bob Melvin hasn't ruled Snell out of making his next start, though he seems to be leaning toward playing it safe with the hurler. "I'm a little skeptical based on the fact that he had to be scratched...but I don't want to get ahead of myself....We're always going to be cautious, this early in the season," Melvin said Monday.
Apr 10, 2022
Likely headed to IL
Manager Bob Melvin said Sunday that Snell (groin) will likely require a trip to the 10-day injured list, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell was scratched from Sunday's start against Arizona due to adductor tightness, and he'll be forced to miss at least a week and a half. The southpaw dealt with a similar issue last season, but Melvin said that Snell's current injury isn't nearly as serious. Nabil Crismatt took his place as Sunday's starter, but MacKenzie Gore is a candidate to be called up to take Snell's place in the rotation.
Apr 10, 2022
Late scratch Sunday
Snell was scratched from Sunday's start against the Diamondbacks with left adductor tightness.
ANALYSIS
Snell was confirmed as the starter for Sunday's contest earlier in the day, and it didn't become apparent that he wasn't starting until Nabil Crismatt took the mound to start warming up. Snell missed time down the stretch last year with a similar injury, though the severity of the issue this time around remains unclear.
Apr 2, 2022
Struggles in first spring outing
Snell pitched 1.1 innings against Arizona on Thursday, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and four walks. He did not strike out any batters.
ANALYSIS
Snell's 2021 campaign ended early due to a groin injury, and he has been brought along slowly this spring as a result of a delayed ramp-up due to the lockout, per Jeff Sanders of The San Diego-Union Tribune. The southpaw threw 45 pitches in his Cactus League debut and struggled with his control, as only 20 of his offerings were strikes. It's hardly cause for panic that a pitcher isn't sharp in his first spring appearance, though the control issues have some relevance given that Snell posted an unappealing 4.8 BB/9 last season -- his worst mark since his rookie campaign. Snell should be able to log one more spring start, and he's likely to open the campaign limited to 4-5 innings his first few times out, according to AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.
Mar 26, 2022
Faces live hitters
Snell worked the equivalent of two innings in live batting practice on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
This was the first time this season that the left hander faced hitters as he works his way into form following a groin injury suffered in September. Following the successful session, Snell is expected to make his first Cactus League start on Thursday and pitch up to three innings.
Sep 29, 2021
Still hoping to return
Snell (groin) hasn't been ruled out from return to pitch this season, per MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
The Padres were eliminated from the postseason over the weekend, but they could still have an impact on the NL West title with three-game sets against the Dodgers and Giants this week. That could be enough motivation for Snell to make one final start in 2021, though that's far from a guarantee given the southpaw's lingering groin issue. San Diego manager Jayce Tingler has indicated that the team isn't closing the door on Snell's return completely, stating, "We still have a ways to go before ultimately we make a call with Snell. But he's doing everything in his power to try to get back on the mound one more time."
Sep 19, 2021
Likely out until postseason
The Padres don't expect Snell (groin) to pitch again in a game setting until the postseason, should San Diego secure a wild-card spot,
ANALYSIS
The second-place finisher in the National League West -- the Giants or Dodgers -- has already locked up the first wild-card spot, while less than three games separate the Cardinals, Phillies, Padres and Reds for the second and final postseason berth. Even though the Padres are still in contention, the decimated state of the pitching staff coupled with the team's sluggish offense in recent weeks have seemingly left San Diego limping to the finish line. With that in mind, Snell appears more likely than not to be done for 2021, as he has yet to resume throwing since sustaining the left adductor strain during his Sept. 12 start. If the Padres are on the brink of elimination during the final week of the regular season, there's a high likelihood the team won't entertain having Snell ramp up and instead hand him ample recovery time to overcome the injury. Snell has largely failed to meet expectations during his first season in San Diego, but before going down with the injury, he had usurped Yu Darvish as the team's

Shifts to injured list
Snell was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a left adductor groin strain.
ANALYSIS
Snell was removed from Sunday's start against the Dodgers after only 11 pitches due to the injury, and he'll require stint on the injured list before rejoining the rotation. The left-hander was initially expected to be ready to make his next start, but he's continued to feel soreness over the past couple days and will miss some time. Vince Velasquez signed a minor-league deal with the Friars and is expected to fill Snell's spot in the rotation for now.
Sep 14, 2021
Groin still feeling sore
Padres manager Jayce Tingler said that Snell (groin) was feeling a little more sore and tender than expected Monday, one day after the lefty exited his start against the Dodgers with left adductor tightness, Annie Heilbrunn of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
While he said he's hopeful Snell will still be ready to make his next turn through the rotation this weekend in St. Louis, Tingler acknowledged the possibility of the team having to turn to another pitcher to make a spot start. The San Diego rotation has been ravaged by injuries throughout the second half, and Snell's bout with adductor tightness comes at particularly tough time after Chris Paddack (elbow) landed on the injured list Monday.
Sep 12, 2021
Dealing with left adductor injury
Snell left Sunday's game against the Dodgers due to left adductor tightness.
ANALYSIS
Snell removed himself from Sunday's game after throwing just 11 pitches, and he had a slight limp as he left the field. It's not yet clear whether the southpaw will be forced to miss his next turn through the rotation, but he tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against St. Louis on Friday.
Sep 12, 2021
Leaves game with apparent injury
Snell exited Sunday's game against the Dodgers in the bottom of the first inning with an apparent injury, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell appeared to hurt himself while throwing his 11th pitch of the game Sunday, and he immediately removed himself from the contest and limped off the field under his own power. The exact nature and severity of the issue aren't yet known, and it's not clear whether he'll be forced to miss additional time.

Unfortunate loser Tuesday
Snell (7-6) was tagged with the loss Tuesday against the Angels despite tossing seven innings of two-run ball, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out 11.
ANALYSIS
Snell had an excellent outing and tossed 70 of his 100 pitches for strikes while posting double-digit strikeouts for the third appearance in a row. However, he was the victim of poor run support since the Padres only mustered four hits throughout the entire game. It's worth noting that Snell has tossed at least seven frames while allowing two or fewer runs in each of his last three starts, a span in which he's also posted an excellent 31:4 K:BB across 21.2 innings.
Sep 1, 2021
Tosses seven no-hit innings
Snell (7-5) earned the win over Arizona on Tuesday, pitching seven scoreless and hitless innings during which he walked two batters and struck out 10.
ANALYSIS
Snell came within six outs of pitching his first career no-hitter, but manager Jayce Tingler elected to pull him from the game after 107 pitches. The fact that the left-hander threw a career-high 122 pitches in his previous outing likely contributed to his removal, and Snell said after the game that the decision was "just smart," according to AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. The 28-year-old punched out 10 batters for the second straight outing and induced an impressive 19 swinging strikes while extending his recent run of strong starts -- he has now allowed three of fewer runs in each of his past six outings, posting a 1.72 ERA and 54:12 K:BB across 36.2 innings over that stretch. Snell's next start will likely come at home against the Angels early next week.
Aug 26, 2021
Strong outing wasted
Snell allowed one run on three hits and struck out 10 over a career-high 7.2 innings Wednesday against the Dodgers but did not end up factoring into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Snell went toe-to-toe with Walker Buehler in this one. He held the Dodgers scoreless over seven innings and went back out for the eighth despite being at 106 pitches. The 28-year-old southpaw opened the frame with a strikeout but would end up surrendering a game-tying homer to Will Smith. He remained in to face Cody Bellinger and punched him out, ending his day at 10 strikeouts and a career-high 122 pitches. Snell generated an outstanding 21 whiffs on the evening and has been quite impressive this month with a 2.12 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 44:10 K:BB over 29.2 innings. He's reached the seven-inning mark twice over his last four starts after managing to do so just one other time this season. Snell now owns a 4.58 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 149:65 K:BB over 114 innings. He lines up for a favorable start against the Diamondbacks next week, a team he's had incredible success against in three tries so far this year.
Aug 21, 2021
Fans nine but takes loss
Snell (6-5) was tagged with the loss Friday against the Phillies after allowing three runs on two hits and two walks across five innings, striking out nine.
ANALYSIS
Snell has recorded at least six strikeouts in each of his last four appearances and has notched at least nine punchouts in four starts throughout the year, but that wasn't enough to get the win here. Even though Snell has pitched more than five innings just once in four starts this month, he hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of those outings and owns a 2.45 ERA across 22 innings in that stretch.
Aug 14, 2021
Fans six in five innings
Snell pitched five innings against Arizona on Friday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Snell didn't come close to matching the seven-inning, 13-strikeout performance he produced against Arizona his last time out, but he at least kept San Diego in the game by surrendering just two runs over five frames. The left-hander threw 61 of 101 pitches for strikes and walked fewer than three batters for the first time in his past eight starts. Snell has shown improvement with providing length of late, going at least five innings in three straight starts after doing so only four times in his previous 13 outings. He'll likely make his next start at Coors Field against Colorado next week.

Strikes out 13
Snell (6-4) won Sunday's 2-0 shutout of Arizona, allowing two hits and three walks with 13 strikeouts in seven innings.
ANALYSIS
Snell dominated Arizona all game, throwing 72 of a season-high 108 pitches for strikes, and was never threatened by a weak lineup. After going more than four innings just once in July, the former Cy Young winner has won consecutive starts to begin August, achieving a new season high in pitches in both outings and permitting just a single run across 12 total innings.

Earns win while fanning six
Snell (5-4) earned the win Tuesday against the Athletics after tossing five innings of one-run ball, allowing five hits and three walks while fanning six.
ANALYSIS
Snell has been very inconsistent this season and has alternated strong outings with some very poor ones, but this one definitively goes into the column of good performances for the left-hander. Snell has posted four starts with one or fewer runs allowed over his last seven appearances, but he has given up at least four runs in each of the remaining three in that span, including two starts in which he gave up seven runs. It's hard to trust him due to those inconsistencies and that has been reflected in the fact that he owns a 5.24 ERA on the season.

Snell (4-4) was tagged for seven runs on seven hits and four walks while fanning one in Wednesday's loss against the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Snell had a rough outing Wednesday and he's been very inconsistent of late, as he has given up four or more earned runs in three of his last six appearances -- including in two of his last three. The lefty owns a 5.44 ERA on the season, which is a huge step in the wrong direction after he posted a 3.24 ERA during the 2020 shortened campaign.

Fans eight in win
Snell (4-3) allowed a run on three hits and three walks while striking out eight in six-plus innings to earn the win Thursday over Miami.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old completed six innings for just the third time in 18 starts this year. In his three longest starts, he's allowed a combined two runs. Snell was on the hook for one of Miami's two runs in the seventh inning, but he got a well-earned win Thursday. Overall, he's struggled to a 4.93 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 104:51 K:BB through 80.1 innings this season. He continues to walk batters at an alarming rate of 5.7 BB/9, which has led to shorter outings due to high pitch counts. Snell projects to make his next start at home versus Oakland next week.

Struggles again Saturday
Snell pitched four innings against Washington on Saturday, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks while striking out three. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
The game was suspended in the sixth inning due to a shooting outside the park, but Snell had already departed and been ruled out of factoring in the decision. The left-hander struggled with his control, throwing only 42 of 74 pitches for strikes and walking more batters (four) than he struck out (three). Walks have been a major factor in Snell's struggles this season -- Saturday marked the second straight game in which he walked four batters, and he has issued multiple free passes in all but two of his 17 outings. In fact, his 5.81 BB/9 ranks second-worst among MLB hurlers who have tossed at least 50 innings. Snell will look to turn things around in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to take place in Miami on Thursday.
Jul 17, 2021
Activated ahead of start
Snell (illness) was activated from the injured list as expected Saturday ahead of his scheduled start against Washington.
ANALYSIS
Snell battled a non-COVID illness late in the first half, making just a single four-inning start since June 22. His first half-season in San Diego didn't go as planned, as he struggled to a 4.99 ERA while walking a career-worst 13.8 percent of opposing batters, but his strong 29.2 percent strikeout rate suggests his upside is still there for the second half.
Jul 16, 2021
Confirmed as Saturday's starter
Snell (illness) has been confirmed as the probable starting pitcher for Saturday's game against Washington, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell didn't make his last scheduled start prior to the All-Star break due to gastroenteritis, and the club wound up putting the left-hander on the injured list so they could bring up another pitcher. The Padres said that they expected Snell to be fine to pitch during the series against the Nationals, and now he's officially scheduled to make his return to the mound Saturday. It's not clear at this point if the 28-year-old will face any sort of strict pitch count with him having 13 days between starts.
Jul 11, 2021
Likely to start next weekend
The Padres are planning on Snell (illness) returning from the injured list next weekend to start Saturday's game against the Nationals, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
After Snell was scratched ahead of his scheduled start this past Friday in Colorado with gastroenteritis, the Padres elected to hold him out of the entire series with the Rockies and placed him on the 10-day injured list. The move was mostly a matter of roster flexibility, as Snell is expected to make a full recovery from the stomach illness well before the minimum 10 days. The Padres will reconvene on Thursday following the All-Star break, and assuming Snell is able to throw a bullpen session that day without issue, he should be cleared to start Saturday's contest.
Jul 9, 2021
Placed on injured list
Snell was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with gastroenteritis, retroactive to July 6.
ANALYSIS
Snell was scratched from his Friday start against Colorado as he continues to feel fatigue from the illness. His move to the IL comes as no surprise, as he'll be eligible to be reinstated when the club returns from the All-Star break July 16. Reiss Knehr was recalled from Double-A San Antonio to start in place of Snell Friday.
Jul 9, 2021
Won't start Friday
Snell (fatigue) won't start as scheduled Friday against the Rockies, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell rejoined the rotation Sunday and delivered four scoreless innings after dealing with a bout of food poisoning, but he's been unable to build up his strength in the days following the outing. The left-hander won't make another start before the All-Star break and will instead receive some extra time to hopefully recover. San Diego's relievers have covered 13 innings over the past two contests and are now slated for a bullpen game Friday.
Jul 8, 2021
Uncertain for Friday's start
Snell (undisclosed) is struggled to build up his strength following his previous start and may not start Friday against the Rockies as scheduled, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander threw 81 pitches over four scoreless frames Sunday after a brief stint on the shelf with a non-COVID illness, but he's apparently still not fully recovered from the ailment. Even if Snell is cleared to start Friday, he may face some workload limitations if he's less than 100 percent.
Jul 4, 2021
Tosses four scoreless innings
Snell allowed two hits and four walks while striking out three in four scoreless innings in Sunday's win over the Phillies. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Snell missed his last turn through the rotation due to a non-COVID illness, and he tossed 81 pitches in his return. The southpaw had some issues with command, as he only threw 39 of his pitches for strikes and issued four walks. However, Snell has now tossed nine scoreless innings across his last two starts. He tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Rockies on Friday.
Jul 4, 2021
Reinstated for Sunday's start
Snell (illness) was activated from the COVID-19 injured list and will start Sunday at Philadelphia, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander was scratched from Tuesday's start and subsequently landed on the COVID-19 IL while dealing with a non-COVID illness, and he'll rejoin the rotation Sunday after missing a single turn. Snell delivered five scoreless frames in his last start against the Dodgers on June 22 and will attempt to build on that performance.
Jul 3, 2021
Expected to start Sunday
Manager Jayce Tingler is confident that Snell (COVID-19 injured list) will be able to start Sunday's game against the Phillies, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday due to an illness and was placed on the COVID-19 IL as a precautionary move. The southpaw never tested positive for the virus and is fully vaccinated, so he was cleared to rejoin the team Thursday and played catch that day. It appears as though Snell should be able to rejoin the rotation for Sunday's series finale in Philadelphia.
Jul 1, 2021
Rejoins team
Snell (COVID-19 injured list) was cleared to rejoin the team Thursday and was spotted playing catch on the field prior to the Padres' series finale versus the Reds in Cincinnati, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell was deactivated Wednesday after he was scratched from his scheduled start a day earlier after falling ill, but his placement on the IL appears to be precautionary more than anything. The veteran lefty is fully vaccinated and never tested positive for the virus, so he should be eligible for reinstatement from the IL in the near future. Snell tentatively lines up to rejoin the rotation Sunday against the Phillies, though the Padres could move him up a day or two in the pitching schedule if manager Jayce Tingler wants to extend some rest to the team's other four starters.
Jun 30, 2021
Lands on injured list
Snell (illness) was placed on the injured list Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander was scratched from Tuesday's start against the Reds due to a non-COVID-19 illness, and he'll now move to the shelf so the Friars can add another arm. The team didn't specify whether Snell was placed on the 10-day IL or the COVID-19 IL, and if it's the latter he can be activated as soon as he's feeling better. He should be considered unavailable until the team updates his status, though it's possible he's able to rejoin the rotation within the week.
Jun 29, 2021
Scratched from start with illness
Snell has been scratched from his Tuesday start against the Reds because of illness. Craig Stammen will start in his place.
ANALYSIS
Per Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune, manager Jayce Tingler said Snell is dehydrated and dealing with "stomach stuff." It's not clear at this point if the left-hander could be an option to start later during the series in Cincinnati. Stammen figures to be the first of multiple relievers to pitch in what figures to be a bullpen game for the Padres on Tuesday.
Jun 23, 2021
Hurls five scoreless innings
Snell (3-3) earned the win Tuesday against the Dodgers after tossing five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out five.
ANALYSIS
Snell bounced back from an ugly start against the Rockies the last time, where he allowed seven runs across just 3.1 innings, and he picked up his third win of the campaign. He's been hit-or-miss recently, but the left-hander owns a 4.66 ERA across four starts this month. His next start is scheduled for next week at Cincinnati.
Jun 16, 2021
Another poor outing
Snell allowed seven runs on nine hits and two walks with just one strikeout in 3.1 innings versus Colorado on Wednesday. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Snell allowed multiple homers for just the second time in 14 starts this year. While long balls haven't been a problem, he allowed multiple walks for the 12th time. The southpaw has now failed to complete five innings in six of his last eight outings. He has a 5.72 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 85:37 K:BB in 61.1 innings overall. Snell's next start is expected to be versus the Dodgers in next week's showdown between NL West powerhouses.
Jun 11, 2021
Tagged with loss
Snell (2-3) gave up three runs on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts across four innings, taking the loss versus the Mets on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Snell had little trouble through four innings, but he allowed four straight batters to reach in the fifth before Austin Adams relieved him. It was a disappoint setback for Snell, who threw seven shutout innings versus the Mets in his previous start. The southpaw has an uninspiring 4.97 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 84:35 K:BB across 58 innings this year. He's failed to complete five innings in five of his last seven starts. The 28-year-old lines up for a home start versus Cincinnati next week.
Jun 5, 2021
Dazzles against Mets
Snell (2-2) earned the win Friday against the Mets after tossing seven scoreless innings, allowing one hit and walking one while striking out 10.
ANALYSIS
Snell has fanned seven or more in four of his last five outings and has recorded two double-digit strikeout games in that stretch, but this was his best game of the season by a wide margin -- especially since he had given up 12 earned runs across 6.2 innings over his previous two appearances. The left-hander saw his ERA decrease to 4.83 and while he's lacked consistency all season long, this outing should be a massive confidence booster for him. His next start is scheduled for next week on the road against the Mets once again.
May 30, 2021
Hit hard again
Snell (1-2) allowed seven runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts in three innings in a loss to Houston on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw's two worst starts of the season have been his two most recent outings. He got into trouble right away Sunday, allowing four runs in the first inning. Snell then struggled through the third before Joe Musgrove handled the rest of the pitching duties for the game. Snell has seen his ERA balloon from 3.79 to 5.55 during his poor run. He's added a 1.60 WHIP and 70:31 K:BB across 47 innings overall. The 28-year-old lines up for a home start versus the Mets next weekend.
May 24, 2021
Crushed for five runs
Snell (1-1) allowed five runs on five hits and three walks over 3.2 innings Monday, striking out seven in the loss against Milwaukee.
ANALYSIS
Snell coughed up a two-run shot to Manny Pina in the second inning and was later taken deep by Avisail Garcia for a solo homer in the fourth. The 28-year-old lefty was removed after a two-out, two-run single by Kolten Wong in the fourth frame. His ERA bounced to 4.50 after allowing a season-high five runs. Snell is lined up to take the mound in Houston this weekend.
May 19, 2021
Strikes out 11 in six innings
Snell did not factor in the decision Tuesday versus Colorado despite allowing only one run over six innings. He gave up five hits and one walk while striking out 11.
ANALYSIS
This was easily Snell's finest start as a member of the Padres, as he tossed six innings for the first time in 2021, racked up a season-high 11 strikeouts and issued less than two walks for the first time on the campaign. The southpaw racked up 17 swinging strikes and escaped with only one run on his ledger despite the fact that four of the five hits against him went for extra bases. Snell will carry a 3.79 ERA and 60:25 K:BB into his next start, which is expected to come in Milwaukee on Monday.
May 12, 2021
Fans seven in short outing
Snell didn't factor into the decision in a 3-2 loss to the Rockies during the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw tossed 84 pitches (53 strikes) in another short, inefficient outing. Snell has yet to pitch more than 5.1 innings in a start this year while issuing multiple free passes in each outing, but his 4.19 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 34.1 frames are far from terrible as he tries to find his form in his first season outside of Tampa Bay.
May 8, 2021
Struggles with control
Snell pitched 4.2 innings against San Francisco on Friday, allowing four runs on one hit and six walks while striking out five. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander threw only 47 of 95 pitches for strikes in the contest, leading to six free passes and negating the fact that the Giants managed only one hit against him. That hit -- a third-inning home run off the bat of Buster Posey -- was good for two runs, and Snell was charged with another pair of runs when two batters he walked in the fifth came around to score after his departure. Snell's first season with San Diego hasn't been as smooth as hoped. Despite registering a respectable 4.15 ERA, the veteran hurler has tallied a career-worst walk rate and has yet to pitch six full innings in a contest. He'll carry a 42:21 K:BB into his next start, tentatively slated for Wednesday at Colorado.
May 2, 2021
Collects first win as Padre
Snell (1-0) earned the win versus San Francisco on Saturday, tossing five innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out six.
ANALYSIS
Snell didn't have great command of the strike zone Saturday -- he threw only 52 of 91 pitches for strikes and walked a trio of batters -- but the left-hander wiggled out of a pair of bases-loaded situations and ended up in the win column for the first time since joining San Diego. He has yet to pitch six innings this season, limiting his value in fantasy leagues that county quality starts, but has been moderately effective with a 3.51 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 37:18 K:BB across 25.2 innings. He's tentatively lined up to face the same Giants squad next weekend, this time in San Francisco.
Apr 25, 2021
Logs no-decision Saturday
Snell tossed 5.1 innings against the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Snell held the Dodgers mostly in check and was in position for a win over 5.1 frames, but he was removed with one out in the sixth inning after having thrown a modest 87 pitches. The move backfired on the Padres, as the bullpen gave up three runs in the remainder of the frame en route to a loss. Snell has yet to get out of the sixth inning this season, though he hasn't yet given up more than three runs in a game. He'll carry a 3.92 ERA into his next start, currently scheduled for Saturday at home against San Francisco.
Apr 19, 2021
Fans seven in no-decision
Snell allowed two earned runs on two hits and two walks while striking out seven across five innings in Sunday's win against the Dodgers. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Snell recovered from a disastrous performance against the Pirates on Tuesday, holding the strong Dodgers offense to two runs. His damage came at the hands of Chris Taylor's two run home run in the second inning. Besides the Snell's Pirates performance, the 28-year-old has three solid starts. However, he hasn't been able to go deeper than five innings yet this season. The southpaw still has a high strikeout rate with a 14.3 K/9.
Apr 14, 2021
Fails to get out of first inning
Snell allowed three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out a batter in just two-thirds of an inning against Pittsburgh on Tuesday and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Tuesday's outing was incredibly uncharacteristic for the former Cy Young winner. Snell started out well after getting the first two hitters out and then completely fell apart, allowing six consecutive batters to reach. He let up a single and two doubles while also walking two and hitting a player, amounting to three runs for the Pirates before he handed the ball over to Craig Stammen with the bases loaded. Snell appeared to have some struggles with locating his pitches in this one as it was the second time in his career he's failed to make it out of the first inning. He'll look to turn things around in an enticing duel against Trevor Bauer and the Dodgers on Sunday.
Apr 7, 2021
Another eight punchouts
Snell allowed two earned runs on two hits and four walks while striking out eight across five innings Wednesday against the Giants. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Snell allowed a two-run home run in the second inning, but otherwise had little trouble with the Giants. Though his four walks stand out, three of his free passes came in the fourth inning -- one of which was intentional. Even with that inefficiency, Snell needed only 87 pitches to retire 15 batters. Through two starts with the Padres, he's allowed two earned runs across 9.2 innings while racking up an 18:6 K:BB. Snell currently lines up to make his next start Tuesday at Pittsburgh.
Apr 3, 2021
Whiffs eight in Padres debut
Snell hurled 4.2 scoreless innings against Arizona on Friday, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out eight. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Snell looked good in his first game as a Padre, racking up 18 swinging strikes and whiffing eight batters. He fell one out shy of qualifying for the win, however, as manager Jayce Tingler chose to pull him after Snell threw 86 pitches before finishing the fifth inning. Limited pitch counts have haunted the southpaw in the past, of course, but he figures to have a longer leash in San Diego as the season progresses. He'll look to build upon a solid first start when he faces San Francisco at home on Wednesday.
Mar 28, 2021
Masterful in final spring start
Snell hurled five scoreless innings against the Angels in a Cactus League contest Saturday, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out six.
ANALYSIS
Snell concludes his first spring as Padre without yielding a run across 14.1 frames. Collectively, the southpaw gave up only five hits while posting a 13:4 K:BB. He's slated to start San Diego's second game of the regular season, Friday at home against Arizona.
Mar 4, 2021
Scoreless inning in spring debut
Snell gave up one walk and secured one strikeout across one inning in Wednesday's Cactus League contest versus Milwaukee.
ANALYSIS
Snell needed only 15 pitches to get through his lone frame, using a double play to wipe out a walk to the second batter. He figures to build up over the spring and should be given a longer leash with San Diego this season than the Rays allowed him in 2020, when Snell never went deeper than 5.2 innings.
Dec 29, 2020
Move to San Diego finalized
Snell's anticipated move from Tampa Bay to San Diego was confirmed Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The trade, which sends Luis Patino, Francisco Mejia, Blake Hunt and Cole Wilcox the other way, was originally announced Sunday but was pending medical review. With that process having been completed, Snell can now head to his new home in the NL West. The 28-year-old lefty has seen his ERA jump around from 1.89 to 4.29 to 3.24 over the past three years, but his strikeout and walk rates have remained very consistent. The former has sat in a narrow band between 31.0 and 33.3 percent over that stretch, while the latter sat between 8.9 and 9.1 percent. He looks set to remain one of the top starters in the game as a Padre.
Dec 27, 2020
Trade in place to Padres
Snell is set to be traded to San Diego from Tampa Bay for Luis Patino, Francisco Mejia, Blake Hunt and Cole Wilcox, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. The deal is pending a review of medical records.
ANALYSIS
Snell had a 3.24 ERA and 11.3 K/9 last season in a bounceback season atop the Rays rotation. He'll move to the top of a Padres rotation and could be allowed to go deeper into games.
Oct 27, 2020
Strikes out nine
Snell recorded 5.1 innings of work Tuesday, allowing one run and two hits while striking out nine in a loss to the Dodgers in Game 6 of the World Series.
ANALYSIS
Snell fanned nine, yet he was unable to escape the sixth inning. Upon allowing a single to Austin Barnes, the southpaw was controversially pulled from the game by manager Kevin Cash. It is also worth noting that Snell never made it six innings all season. The 27-year-old threw 48 of his 73 pitches for strikes and recorded a first-pitch strike on 9 of the 18 batters that he faced.
Oct 21, 2020
Fans nine in win
Snell recorded 4.2 innings of work Wednesday, allowing two runs, two hits and four walks while striking out nine in a win over the Dodgers in Game 2 of the World Series.
ANALYSIS
Snell looked sharp Wednesday, fanning nine in his start. His lone mistake came on a two-run homer to Chris Taylor in the fifth inning. The 27-year-old threw 49 of his 88 pitches for strikes while inducing 13 swinging strikes. The Rays have been careful with the left-hander who has dealt with minor injuries throughout his career, but he will see action again if the series continues to get extended.
Oct 15, 2020
Gets Game 6 nod
Snell will start Friday in Game 6 of the ALCS against the Astros, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell will be on normal four day's rest after allowing one run across five innings while earning the win in Game 1 on Sunday. The southpaw has fanned 15 and posted a 2.87 ERA across 15.2 innings during three starts this postseason.
Oct 12, 2020
Earns win in ALCS Game 1
Snell allowed one run on six hits and two walks while striking out two over five innings in a win over the Astros on Sunday in Game 1 of the ALCS.
ANALYSIS
After giving up three homers to the Yankees in a loss in Game 1 of the Division Series, Snell rebounded in a major way, with the lone blemish being a long ball off the bat of Jose Altuve in the first inning. The 2018 AL Cy Young winner was not fully stretched out when the 2020 season began and he still has not completed six full innings in a start this season. That said, Snell ranked 15th during the regular season in strikeout rate (min. 50 IP) and the team clearly still has a lot of faith in him, even if the lefty has yet to recapture that same magic from a few years ago. He should start Friday if there is a Game 6.
Oct 6, 2020
Serves up three homers in loss
Snell took the loss to the Yankees on Monday in Game 1 of the ALDS. He allowed four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Clint Frazier, Kyle Higashioka and Aaron Judge all took the lefty yard, the latter two in the fifth inning. As John Romano of the Tampa Bay Times notes, Snell was constantly working from behind and went to three-ball counts to seven different hitters. He could not locate his fastball and as a result had to rely more on his changeup and curveball. Even with his struggles Monday, it still seems likely Snell would start Game 5 on short rest, if the Rays are able to force a Game 5.
Sep 30, 2020
Fans nine in win
Snell (1-0) fired 5.2 scoreless innings Tuesday as he earned the win against the Blue Jays in Game 1 of the Wild Card Round. He allowed one hit and two walks while striking out nine.
ANALYSIS
Snell cruised in his 5.2 innings of work, refusing to allow a runner to reach second base. The 27-year-old lefty threw 48 of his 82 pitches for strikes as he left the Jays guessing all night. After recording a 3.24 ERA in the regular season, the southpaw will look to carry his dominance into his next start, which would be in the ALDS if the Rays advance.
Sep 26, 2020
Starting first playoff game
Snell will start Game 1 of the Rays' Wild Card series Tuesday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Rays are most likely to face the Blue Jays, against which Snell allowed two earned runs over 7.2 innings in two outings this season. Snell has a 2.81 ERA across 13 career starts against the Blue Jays overall, and he'll head into the postseason opener with some momentum after posting a 2.20 ERA, 9.9 K/9 and 18:6 K:BB across the 16.1 innings cover his last three regular-season starts.
Sep 23, 2020
Matches season high in strikeouts
Snell (4-2) was the pitcher of record in Tuesday's 5-2 loss to the Mets after giving up three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out nine.
ANALYSIS
After keeping the ball in the yard in both of his past two starts, Snell couldn't keep the streak going Tuesday, as both Robinson Cano and Yonder Alonso took him deep for solo shots. That was enough offense to back Mets starter Seth Lugo, who outdueled Snell by allowing only two runs (one earned) over 6.1 innings. Snell was at least able to match his season high in strikeouts, with the southpaw racking up 22 swinging strikes among his 108 pitches. Manager Kevin Cash said after the game that Snell would make his next start in the first game of the Rays' playoff opener Tuesday. Charlie Morton and Tyler Glasnow will follow Snell in the pitching schedule.
Sep 18, 2020
Strong in no-decision
Snell didn't factor into the decision in the first game of Thursday's doubleheader, allowing one run on two hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw was in line for his fifth win of the season in an eventual 3-1 victory, but after he exited the game with a runner on second and one out, Diego Castillo proceeded to blow the save by allowing the inherited runner to score. Snell tossed 73 pitches 47 strikes) in the strong outing, and he'll carry a 3.05 ERA and 54:15 K:BB through 44.1 innings into potentially his final start of the regular season Tuesday, on the road against the Mets.
Sep 16, 2020
Starting Game 1 Thursday
Snell will start Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader in Baltimore, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He is coming off one of his two best starts of the season, where he tossed 5.1 scoreless innings while striking out five and picking up the win against Boston. Baltimore ranks 15th in the majors with a 102 wRC+ against southpaws, so it's a neutral matchup in a hitter-friendly ballpark.
Sep 12, 2020
Bounces back Friday
Snell (4-1) fired 5.1 scoreless innings Friday as he earned the win against the Red Sox. He allowed five hits and two walks while striking out five.
ANALYSIS
Snell was charged with his first loss of the year in his last outing, but he bounced back with a sharp performance against Boston. It was the southpaw's first scoreless appearance in nearly a month as he now carries a 3.23 ERA and 50:14 K:BB over 39 innings this season. His next start should be in Baltimore on Thursday.
Sep 6, 2020
Draws first loss of 2020
Snell (3-1) allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits (one home run) and three walks while striking out eight across five innings Saturday as he was handed his first loss of the shortened season.
ANALYSIS
Snell was cruising until he found himself in a bit of a jam in the fourth with men on second and third and nobody out. He struck out the next batter but the runner on third was able to score after Michael Perez had trouble blocking the pitch leading to a passed ball and the first run of the game for the Marlins. Snell then allowed a second runner to score on an infield single before Corey Dickerson took him yard to make the score 4-0. The southpaw came back out for the fifth and gave up another run due to more fielding errors by his team but was able to finish the inning while limiting the damage. Snell has yet to record a quality start in eight attempts this season but owns a 3.74 ERA and an impressive 45:12 K:BB across 33.2 innings and is set to take the mound Friday in a favorable matchup with the Red Sox.
Aug 30, 2020
Earns third win Sunday
Snell (3-0) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five over five innings as he earned the win Sunday against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Snell was forced to take a no-decision in his last start despite striking out nine, but he returned to the win column against the Marlins. The southpaw now feels as though he's completely recovered from the shoulder issue that bothered him during spring training, and his results have backed up that claim. He now sports a 3.14 ERA and 37:9 K:BB over 28.2 innings during seven starts this season. His next start should come at home Saturday against Miami.
Aug 24, 2020
Fans nine in tough no-decision
Snell allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out nine over 5.2 innings in a no-decision Monday against the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Snell surrendered one run in the third on a double and another in the sixth on a solo blast before being exiting the contest with a one-run lead. Toronto would put up runs in the seventh and ninth to bring home the victory, resulting in a no-decision for the southpaw. Despite this, it was positive to see Snell rack up nine strikeouts after fanning just three in his last outing Tuesday in New York. Through six starts this season, he owns a 3.04 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with 32 punchouts across 23.2 innings.

Feels back to full health
Snell, who was able to reach the 90-pitch threshold in his last start against the Yankees on Tuesday, feels like he's now completely over the shoulder issue that plagued him during the spring, Richard Justice of MLB.com reports. "I'm a starting pitcher now," Snell said "That's two starts where I've gotten to five innings. I'm not an opener. Can't call me that. So definitely excited about that."
ANALYSIS
The left-hander's tongue-in-cheek comment stems from the fact he went no longer than three innings in any of his first three starts of the campaign, as manager Kevin Cash and his staff were carefully managing Snell's pitch count. However, as he demonstrated in his most recent turn, Snell's arm appears to be back to being able to handle very close to a normal workload. It's been somewhat of an up-and-down season thus far for the 2018 AL Cy Young Award winner, who's posted three scoreless efforts but also allowed three earned runs apiece in his other two starts.
Aug 19, 2020
Escapes with second win
Snell (2-0) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks over five innings in a 6-3 victory over the Yankees. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Two of the hits off Snell left the yard, accounting for all the damage off the southpaw, but the Rays matched the Yankees homer for homer. Snell has yet to last longer than five innings in a start this season, but he's won both of the outings in which he reached that minimum mark. He'll look for his third straight win when he next takes the mound Sunday, at home against the Jays.
Aug 13, 2020
Notches first win
Snell (1-0) allowed four hits over five scoreless innings in a win over the Red Sox on Wednesday. He struck out six and did not issue a walk.
ANALYSIS
The lefty said that he intended to go five for the first time this season and did just that on 70 pitches. Snell established a new season high in strikeouts and it's great to see a zero in a walk column, especially after Snell walked batters at an 11.1 percent clip last season around a few injuries. Tampa Bay has been deliberate in building Snell up and it may be a couple starts yet before he's available for a traditional starter's workload. He will need to maximize his efficiency once again next week against the Yankees and Blue Jays.
Aug 12, 2020
Prepared for five-inning start
Snell said that he expects to be capped at around five innings or 75 pitches during Wednesday's start against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The Rays have been deliberately building Snell up slowly since the start of summer camp after he was bothered by elbow discomfort during spring training. He's thrown 46, 53 and 59 pitches in his first three starts, so he'll take another small step forward by adding around 15 more pitches to his workload restriction. While Snell turned in his sharpest outing yet his last time out Aug. 7 against the Yankees by striking out five over three no-hit innings, his limited workloads have prevented him from factoring into a decision this season. He'll have a better chance at securing a win if he pitches effectively over five innings Wednesday, but the Rays' reluctance to let him work deep into the game will still limit his overall appeal in DFS contests.
Aug 8, 2020
Productive despite short start
Snell fired three scoreless innings in Friday's win against the Yankees but didn't factor into the decision. He allowed no hits and two walks while striking out five.
ANALYSIS
Even though Snell didn't allow any hits or runs Friday, he struggled a bit with his command as only 32 of his 59 pitches went for strikes. The southpaw had hoped to throw 4-to-5 innings Friday, but he was only able to last three innings as a result of his struggles to throw strikes. Snell has a 3.38 ERA and 14:4 K:BB over eight innings across his first three starts in 2020. He'll attempt to qualify for his first win on the road Wednesday against the Red Sox.
Aug 5, 2020
Hoping for longer outing Friday
Snell is hoping to pitch 4-to-5 innings Friday against the Yankees, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell has pitched just five innings through two starts this season as the Rays slowly extend his workload, but after pitching into the fourth inning during his last outing, it sounds like the lefty could pitch long enough to qualify for his first win Friday. Through two appearances, Snell has allowed three runs while striking out nine batters in five innings.
Aug 1, 2020
Hurt by long ball Friday
Snell didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Orioles, allowing three runs on four hits over three-plus innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
He appeared to be in complete control for three scoreless frames, but a Renato Nunez double and homers by Anthony Santander and Pedro Severino in the fourth brought Snell's night to an abrupt end. The southpaw threw 53 pitches (37 strikes) as the Rays slowly extend his workload, but barring a big jump in his pitch count, Snell doesn't appear close to being a consistent threat to last the five innings necessary to qualify for a win. His next outing is scheduled for Thursday, at home against the Yankees.
Jul 31, 2020
On innings limit Friday
Snell is slated to work 3-to-4 innings maximum in his start Friday against the Orioles, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander threw an elevated 46 pitches across just two frames in his first start of the season Sunday, and the Rays will hope for more efficiency in his second turn Friday. Snell averaged 94.9 mph on his fastball in his season debut, which represents a slight downturn from his respective 95.9 and 96.5 season-ending figures the last two campaigns. The slight dip in velocity isn't a concern for Snell, who implies it was partly be design. "I'm going to try to keep within what I've been doing," Snell said. "I'm not going to try to max out velo or get nasty. I'm happy with where I'm at. I feel like it's definitely more than enough. My velo will continue to climb the more that I pitch."
Jul 26, 2020
Struggles to find strike zone
Snell allowed three hits and two walks while striking out five across two scoreless innings Sunday against the Blue Jays. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Snell punched out the first two batters he faced, using a heavy dose of fastballs. However, he also struggled to place his pitches, beginning only four of the 11 batters he faced with a strike. Though Snell's first start of the campaign was scheduled to be short, he did not work efficiently, allowing him to retire only six batters. He'll look to improve on his command and the length of his outing in his next start, currently projected for Friday at the Orioles.
Jul 26, 2020
Set for two or three innings
Snell is expected to throw two or three innings Sunday against the Blue Jays, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old threw 47 pitches during his final intrasquad appearance last week, and it appears he'll begin the season with a similar workload. It's a significant hit to his Snell's fantasy value, as he's essentially operating as an opener and won't qualify for a potential win. Hopefully the left-hander can get built up to his typical starting workload quickly for the shortened season.
Jul 24, 2020
Confirmed as Sunday's starter
Snell will start Sunday's game against the Blue Jays, Steve Carney of Sports Radio 620 WDAE reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell wasn't very effective in his final tuneup during an intrasquad game Monday, but he'll take the mound Sunday for the Rays' third game of the season. Despite the southpaw's struggles Monday, he isn't expected to have any workload restrictions in his first regular season start. After winning the AL Cy Young Award in 2018, Snell underwent elbow surgery last season as he posted a 4.29 ERA and 147:40 K:BB over 107 innings across 23 starts.
Jul 22, 2020
Trouble with location Monday
Snell faced 10 batters in Monday's intrasquad game and allowed four walks and two hits while bouncing several pitches in the dirt, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander threw a total of 47 pitches, but Topkin reports at least five of those failed to make it into the catcher's mitt on the fly. Snell chastised himself after the outing for not trusting his fastball sufficiently and attacking hitters, but manager Kevin Cash gave the 27-year-old somewhat of a pass by highlighting that workload restrictions in camp likely led to the lack of sharpness and location. Snell lines up to start against the Blue Jays either Sunday or Monday for his first turn of the regular season.
Jul 19, 2020
Could start third game
Snell lines up to start either Sunday at home against the Blue Jays or Monday against the Braves, Steve Carney of Sports Radio 620 WDAE reports.
ANALYSIS
Charlie Morton and Ryan Yarbrough have been announced as the official starters Friday and Saturday, respectively, and with Snell set to pitch in Tuesday's intrasquad game, it seems likely he will take the ball for the finale of the opening series. If the Rays opt to give Snell an extra day's rest, he would get a two-start week against the Braves and then in Baltimore.
Jul 9, 2020
Works in sim game Wednesday
Snell threw 23 pitches in a simulated game Wednesday, his first time facing hitters since March, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell reported no issues with the elbow problems that once plagued him, and he was able to get 14 of his 23 offerings into the strike zone against the quartet of Yandy Diaz, Joey Wendle, Michael Perez and Daniel Robertson. Snell stated he'd already been feeling back to normal after throwing for the last week and a half, emphasizing that he'll "continue to feel better" with the additional work he plans on putting in before Opening Day.
Jul 2, 2020
No workload restrictions expected
Snell is considered a 'full-go" for the Rays' summer camp at Tropicana Field that begins Friday, and he shouldn't have any workload restrictions during the regular season, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander was due to be monitored carefully this coming season because of last summer's elbow problems. However, the 60-game season will yield a much lighter workload than originally expected, meaning Snell should essentially be deployed without restrictions with respect to the cumulative amount of innings he logs. Snell has been working out on his own in his Seattle-area home during the shutdown of spring training, and his current conditioning will be evaluated by pitching coach Kyle Snyder on Friday.
Jun 25, 2020
Expected back Thursday
Snell was slated to be back in his St. Petersburg home Thursday after spending the last several weeks in the Seattle area, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The numerous Rays players that were scattered about the globe are naturally beginning to formulate their plans to return to the Tampa area following the finalization of the details of a truncated 2020 regular season. Snell has been busy working a throwing program in his Seattle home in recent weeks, and it appears he'll now have several days to immerse himself back into the team environment ahead of the ramp-up to the campaign. It remains to be seen how manager Kevin Cash will handle his starters' workloads the first couple turns through the rotation, with that expected to be sorted out during the team's upcoming summer camp.
Jun 12, 2020
Tosses fastballs off mound
Snell threw 15 fastballs during a bullpen session Friday, marking the first time he's thrown off a mound since mid-March, Josh Tolentino of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
There's no word of a snag with Snell's session, so his throwing program seems to be going on without a hitch. Barring a setback of some kind, Snell should be available for the start of the 2020 season, when or if it commences.
Jun 5, 2020
Increases throwing program
Snell is throwing four to five times per week while spring training is suspended and will begin throwing off a mound next week, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell has continued to throw since play was suspended, but he recently increased his throwing program ahead of a potential return. His return to mound throwing will mark the first time that he's thrown off a mound since spring training, but it appears as though the southpaw is fully healthy despite suffering a left elbow injury in late February.
Apr 21, 2020
Keeping up throwing program
Snell continues to throw three times per week at his St. Petersburg home while spring training remains suspended, Josh Tolentino of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander's ability to continue playing catch without issue supports the notion his previously ailing elbow is back to full health. A more stringent test will come once Snell is able to jump back into game action again, however, and for the moment, the timeline for being able to do so remains firmly up in the air.
Mar 23, 2020
Confident about health
Snell indicated that he was satisfied with the health of his left elbow before spring training was suspended, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. He's confident that he'll be ready to pitch without any restrictions once the season resumes.
ANALYSIS
Prior to the MLB-mandated shutdown, Snell had been cleared to pitch in a simulated game after a cortisone shot alleviated the discomfort he had been experiencing in his elbow. Had the season started on time, Snell may have had to skip a turn in the rotation while he remained behind the Rays' other pitchers, but with the MLB hiatus set to last until at least mid-May, he should be ready to go for Tampa Bay's opening series. While Snell is ostensibly healthy and should benefit from the extended break, it's not the most reassuring sign that his elbow was already barking again this spring after he had it scoped last July.
Mar 11, 2020
Simulated game on deck
Snell played catch without any elbow issues Wednesday and is expected to pitch a simulated game Saturday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old southpaw was originally expected to start Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays, but it's encouraging that the change of plans is unrelated to his elbow. Snell is coming off a disappointing outing Monday against the Blue Jays which included four walks, four earned runs and just a single out. Tampa Bay is choosing to take a conservative approach to bringing their No. 2 starter back from a Feb. 29 cortisone shot, which should be encouraging to 2020 fantasy owners in the long run this season.
Mar 9, 2020
No elbow issues in return to action
Snell felt great following his outing Monday against the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell wasn't at all happy with his performance, which included four walks and four earned runs and just a single out. The important thing, though, is that he felt no pain in his elbow following the game. Assuming that remains the case for the rest of spring, Snell should be fine for Opening Day.
Mar 7, 2020
Confirmed as Monday's starter
Snell (elbow) has been confirmed as Monday's starter against the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell received a cortisone shot last week to help him deal with pain in his elbow and he has successfully thrown a bullpen session and is now confirmed to return to game action. He still carries more risk than the typical starting pitcher due to this elbow scare, but it sounds like fantasy managers can proceed with the expectation that Snell will be ready for the start of the season.
Mar 7, 2020
On track to pitch Monday
Snell (elbow) is on track to pitch Monday against the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell will play catch before a final decision on his next appearance is made, but he felt good Saturday morning after throwing a bullpen session the day before, and barring any setbacks he will take the ball Monday for the first time since Feb. 26. He still has time to make a few appearances before the regular season begins, but it remains to be seen if his absence will affect his availability for Opening Day.
Mar 6, 2020
Bullpen goes smoothly
Snell (elbow) felt good after a 20-pitch bullpen session Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell required a cortisone shot in his elbow last week, fueling fears that he could be out for the start of the regular season. The Rays played down concerns, noting that the shot was on the outside of the lefty's elbow rather than near the tendon, which would be more worrisome. Assuming he still feels good Saturday, he could get back into game action as soon as Monday.
Mar 3, 2020
Bullpen work set for Friday
Snell (elbow) said he's on track to throw a bullpen session Friday, Steve Carney of Sports Radio 620 WDAE reports.
ANALYSIS
The cortisone shot Snell received last week for his left elbow appears to have had the desired effect, as the 27-year-old was able to play catch from 60 feet Tuesday without discomfort. He plans to increase his flat-ground distance to 90 feet Wednesday before getting back on the mound Friday. Assuming he gets through the bullpen session without incident, Snell could be cleared to face live hitters early next week.
Mar 2, 2020
Still on track for recovery
Snell (elbow) was "feeling good" Monday and is still on track to play catch Tuesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell received a cortisone shot in his elbow Friday after feeling some discomfort after his start Wednesday, but he appears to be on track in his recovery. The southpaw is expected to play catch Tuesday and throw a bullpen session Friday, so he'll have several chances to test the elbow over the next few days. A clearer picture for his return could become more apparent after he resumes throwing.
Feb 29, 2020
Receives cortisone shot
Snell felt some discomfort in his elbow after Wednesday's start and received a cortisone shot Friday, Josh Tolentino of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Rays are reportedly not overly concerned, and Snell is already scheduled to play catch Tuesday and throw a bullpen session Friday, so he won't be shut down for long. Manager Kevin Cash noted that the shot was in the lefty's outer elbow, not near the tendon, which would be a considerably more concerning area. Still, it's hard not to worry about elbow issues popping up early in camp for a pitcher who missed two months for elbow surgery last season. Whether or not Snell is expected to miss time at the start of the regular season should become clear over the next week as he resumes throwing.
Feb 27, 2020
Impresses in first outing
Snell started Wednesday's Grapefruit League loss to the Twins, firing a perfect first inning during which he recorded a strikeout.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw threw 21 pitches overall, 15 of which found the strike zone. As per Juan Toribio of MLB.com, Snell utilized all four of his pitches but expressed frustration after the game that he didn't throw a slider against a right-handed hitter, which is an area he's stated he'd like to focus on this spring. Snell made several changes this offseason that appear to be paying early dividends this spring, hiring a personal chef to improve his diet, getting additional rest and arriving in St. Petersburg almost a month earlier than usual to prepare for the season.
Feb 20, 2020
Shows off slider in bullpen
Snell featured a revamped slider during his first live batting practice Thursday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. "He looked awesome; he looked really good," said Rays manager Kevin Cash. "I think he put some weight in his lower half to get stronger and it looked pretty easy today."
ANALYSIS
The left-hander is fully healthy and looking like it, impressing during the 30 pitches he threw to Ji-Man Choi, Randy Arozarena and Willy Adames. Snell threw all four of his pitches Thursday, but eight of his offerings were sliders after he threw the pitch just 6.7 percent of the time in 2019. The 27-year-old is focusing on refining the slider this spring after he generated an impressive .208 xBA when utilizing it last season, and he plans to utilize it as a way of making his changeup and fastball more effective in the coming campaign.
Sep 17, 2019
Activated ahead of start
Snell (elbow) was activated ahead of his scheduled start Tuesday against the Dodgers, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell has been out since late July while recovering from arthroscopic elbow surgery. He hasn't been able to build up to a full starter's workload yet, but he's expected to throw around three innings Tuesday.
Sep 13, 2019
In line to start Tuesday
Snell (elbow) is expected to start Tuesday's game against the Dodgers, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell isn't quite stretched out all the way yet, but he's on track to throw around three innings Tuesday, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. He's been sidelined since undergoing arthroscopic elbow surgery at the end of July.
Sep 13, 2019
Joining team in California
Snell (elbow) is joining the Rays in California for their upcoming series against the Angels and Dodgers, MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell completed a rehab outing with Triple-A Durham on Thursday and could slot into the rotation next during the two-game set against the Dodgers on Tuesday or Wednesday. A more concrete plan is likely to come into focus once the 26-year-old throws his next bullpen session.
Sep 10, 2019
Next rehab outing on tap
Snell (elbow) is scheduled to throw two innings or 30 pitches Thursday for Triple-A Durham, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell looked shaky through two-thirds of an inning for Durham on Saturday, giving up a run on two hits and two walks, but he'll extend out to 30 pitches Thursday. This may be his last chance for action at Triple-A, depending on how long the Bulls' playoff run lasts.
Sep 8, 2019
Makes brief rehab appearance
Snell (elbow) allowed an earned run on two hits and two walks over two-thirds of an inning while also recording two strikeouts in Triple-A Durham's win over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
As his final line indicates, Snell struggled with his control while getting just 12 of his 24 pitches into the strike zone. The rehabbing southpaw did hit his pregame pitch-count mark, and it remains to be seen if he'll have another chance to make an appearance before the Bulls' playoff run concludes.
Sep 5, 2019
Rehab start Saturday
Snell (elbow) will make a rehab start Saturday for Triple-A Durham, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The Bulls are in the midst of the International League semifinals against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, so there is no guarantee he will have the opportunity to make a second rehab start. General manager Erik Neander said earlier Thursday that Snell is on track to return in time to make a few appearances in September. If Saturday's rehab outing goes well, it's possible that Snell could make his next appearance for the Rays.
Sep 5, 2019
Remains on track
General manager Erik Neander said Snell (elbow) remains on track to get a few outings in September, Josh Tolentino of The Athletic reports. "He's moving in the direction of coming back and being able to contribute," Neander said. "His progression to this point is everything you expect to see."
ANALYSIS
Those who have been stashing Snell have been doing so with the idea of getting two or three starts out of the Rays' ace before the season wraps up, and that still seems like a possibility. He threw another bullpen session Wednesday. While Snell is on track to return this month, it's possible that his first outing or two may be abbreviated appearances, given the fact he won't be going on a rehab assignment.
Sep 3, 2019
To throw again Wednesday
Snell (elbow) will throw another bullpen session Wednesday, Josh Tolentino of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell appears to still have time to return from late-July arthroscopic elbow surgery before the end of the season. He's thrown two bullpens already and could potentially have his return more clearly mapped out following Wednesday's session.
Sep 2, 2019
Throws second bullpen
Snell (elbow) threw 18 pitches during his second bullpen session Sunday, the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell upped his pitch count slightly over that of his first session as he continues on his quest to return later in September. The left-hander is likely to throw at least one more bullpen with a slightly higher workload before the next step in his recovery is determined.
Aug 30, 2019
Feels good after bullpen session
Snell (elbow) felt good following a bullpen session Friday, Josh Tolentino of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell threw only fastballs and changeups, but the session nevertheless represents an important step as he works his way back from late-July arthroscopic elbow surgery. He's expected to throw two more bullpen sessions and one live batting practice session before returning to the Rays, though he'll likely pitch in shorter stints at first given his relatively accelerated return process.
Aug 27, 2019
Scheduled for bullpen Friday
Snell (elbow) is tentatively scheduled to throw a bullpen session Friday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell is working his way back from late-July arthroscopic elbow surgery. He threw 10 fastball in a brief throwing session Tuesday and isn't far from throwing a proper bullpen. He still has time to return in the final few weeks of the season but even a minor setback would likely rule him out for the remainder of the regular season.
Aug 25, 2019
Won't return before mid-September
Manager Kevin Cash reiterated Sunday that Snell (elbow) remains without a clear timeline to return from the 10-day injured list, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Snell hasn't hit a setback in his recovery from left elbow surgery since beginning a throwing program Aug. 12, but he's still not far enough along in his rehab process for the Rays to identify a target date for his return. Since Snell remains limited to playing catch off flat ground at this stage, Topkin posits that the southpaw is likely at least 10 days behind rehabbing pitcher Tyler Glasnow (elbow), who is slated to throw live batting practice Tuesday. With Glasnow realistically trending toward a return in the second week of September, it thus appears safe to rule out Snell for at least the first half of the season's final month. A clearer timeline for Snell's return should emerge once he advances to mound work.
Aug 21, 2019
Throwing at about 90 feet
Snell (elbow) is throwing from approximately 90 feet on flat ground, the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw continues to make seemingly consistent progress from his recent surgery, and his current activity level keeps him on a timetable for a return to the rotation around mid-September. Snell resumed throwing Aug. 11 at a distance of 45-to-60 feet after July 29 surgery to remove bone chips in his elbow. He's likely to progress to bullpen sessions as his next step after he stretches his arm out over at least a couple of more catch sessions.
