Non-tendered by Milwaukee
Woodruff (shoulder) became a free agent Friday after being non-tendered by the Brewers, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff is expected to miss the entire 2024 season following October surgery to repair the anterior capsule in his right shoulder. He's been a true ace when healthy, but Milwaukee couldn't justify paying him a lofty salary -- projected at around $11.6 million -- while he potentially spends all of next year in rehab mode.

Likely out for 2024
Woodruff underwent surgery Friday to repair the anterior capsule in his right shoulder, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Three days after general manager Matt Arnold expressed optimism toward Woodruff's status for 2024, the Brewers now expect Woodruff to miss most, if not all, of next season as he recovers from his procedure. Woodruff missed four months of the regular season due to shoulder issues, and his capsular injury also kept him out of the team's NL Wild Card Series matchup with the Diamondbacks. Woodruff will be entering his final year of team control in 2024, though it's possible he signs a two-year deal with Milwaukee to pitch in 2025.

'Optimistic' about 2024 readiness
Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said Tuesday that the team is "optimistic" regarding the availability of Woodruff (shoulder) for next season, Sophia Minnaert of Bally Sports Wisconsin reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff suffered a right shoulder capsular injury during his final start of the regular season, keeping him from making a start during the Brewers' NL Wild Card Series loss to the Diamondbacks. He will receive a second opinion on the shoulder this week, but the team seems confident after the initial diagnosis that it won't keep the right-hander from being ready for the start of the 2024 campaign. Woodruff was limited to 11 starts this season due to shoulder issues but was excellent when healthy, holding a 2.28 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 74:15 K:BB over 67 innings. He will be eligible for arbitration for a final time this winter before entering his walk year.

Could miss playoffs due to shoulder
Manager Craig Counsell said Monday that Woodruff is tending to a right shoulder capsular injury and will be out for the Brewers' wild-card round series with the Diamondbacks, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. "His availability for the postseason is up in the air at this point," Counsell added.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff appeared to be lined up to start Game 2 of the series Wednesday, but those plans will be scrapped after the shoulder issue cropped up following his final regular-season appearance Sept. 23. The right-hander, who already missed four months earlier in the campaign with a Grade 2 subscapular strain, will get a second opinion later this week, but his chances of pitching in the postseason don't seem promising even if the Brewers make a deep run, per Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Freddy Peralta now becomes the most likely candidate to start Game 2 after Corbin Burnes takes the hill for Game 1 on Tuesday.

Won't pitch final weekend
Woodruff will not pitch over the final weekend of the regular season, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff would be on normal rest for Friday's series opener against the Cubs, but he'll instead stay fresh with rounds of live batting practice as the Brewers line up their postseason rotation. Colin Rea is the listed starter Friday versus Chicago, followed by a TBD on Saturday and Adrian Houser on Sunday.
Sep 24, 2023
No-decision against Marlins
Woodruff came away with a no-decision Saturday in the Brewers' 5-4 loss to the Marlins, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
A three-run shot by Jake Burger in the first inning accounted for most of the damage off Woodruff, but the right-hander still left the mound having generating 29 called or swinging strikes among his 87 pitches. He saw his quality start streak end at five, and since returning to the rotation in early August, Woodruff has posted a 2.59 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 62:12 K:BB through 55.2 innings. With Milwaukee having already clinched the NL Central title, he could be headed for a reduced workload in his final regular-season start next weekend, likely to come at home against the Cubs.
Sep 18, 2023
Earns another quality start
Woodruff did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run on three hits and zero walks over six innings against Washington. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
A two-out solo homer by Luis Garcia in the second inning was the only blemish to Woodruff's line, who only allowed two other baserunners in his six innings. However, an anemic Brewers offense was only able to manufacture one run in support of Woodruff who was looking for his sixth win of the season in 10 starts. It was Woodruff's fifth consecutive quality start, and he now holds an ERA of 1.06 with 38 strikeouts in 34 innings over that stretch. He'll look continue his hot streak in his next start, currently scheduled to take place in Miami over the weekend.
Sep 11, 2023
Shuts out Marlins
Woodruff (5-1) allowed six hits and a walk in a complete game shutout against the Marlins on Monday. He struck out seven while picking up the win.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff didn't allow a single extra-base hit and rarely found himself in much danger during the dominant outing. He tossed 77 of 106 pitches for strikes to produce his first career MLB shutout and first complete game since 2020. He's allowed just three runs over his last 28 innings, lowering his season ERA to 1.93 across 56 frames. Woodruff has given up fewer than three runs in eight of his nine starts this year. His next outing is projected to be at home against the Nationals.
Sep 5, 2023
Another impressive outing
Woodruff (4-1) earned the win Tuesday, allowing two hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings against the Pirates. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff logged his longest outing of the year, limiting Pittsburgh to just two singles and two walks en route to his third consecutive quality start. In six outings since returning from the injured list Aug. 6, the burly right-hander has posted a 3-1 record with a 2.78 ERA, a minuscule 0.76 WHIP and an impressive 43:9 K:BB across 35.2 innings. Woodruff is tentatively scheduled to face the Marlins in Milwaukee early next week.
Aug 30, 2023
Strikes out eight in no-decision
Woodruff did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk over six innings against the Cubs. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
After the Cubs scored twice in the opening frame, Woodruff rebounded to blank Chicago over his final five frames, allowing just one additional hit. In five starts since returning from a four-month IL stint, Woodruff's pitched to a 3.45 ERA while logging 37 strikeouts in 22.2 innings. Overall, he's 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 49:10 K:BB across seven starts (40 innings) this season. Woodruff currently lines up for a road matchup with the Pirates in his next outing.
Aug 25, 2023
Punches out 11
Woodruff (3-1) yielded one run on three hits and three walks over six innings Friday, striking out 11 and earning a victory over San Diego.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff dominated with his first double-digit strikeout performance of the season Friday. The lone blemish on his line was Manny Machado's solo shot in the fourth inning. Woodruff ended his outing with four straight punchouts. He lowered his season ERA to 2.65 and has allowed two or fewer runs in five of his six appearances in 2023. His next start is projected to be on the road against the Cubs next week.
Aug 18, 2023
Allows four runs in no decision
Woodruff did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against the Rangers. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Following a scoreless three innings to start the night, Woodruff was undone by the long ball in the fourth. Nathanial Lowe tagged him with a two-run blast followed a couple batters later by a solo shot from Mitch Garver. Woodruff pitched into the sixth, allowing a fourth run when Corey Seager came around to score following a leadoff double but ultimately escaped with a no decision. Although the four runs were his most allowed all season, the 92 pitches thrown represent Woodruff's highest total since returning from a shoulder injury on Aug. 6. His next start is projected to be a home matchup against the Padres next weekend.
Aug 13, 2023
Nabs victory Saturday
Woodruff (2-1) earned the win over the White Sox on Saturday, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out five batters over 6.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff pitched well but was stuck with the loss against Pittsburgh his last time out, which was his first appearance in nearly four months following a shoulder injury. The right-hander was solid again Saturday, though it looked like he could be in for another tough-luck defeat when the Brewers failed to score through six frames. However, Milwaukee finally broke through for a trio of runs in the top of the seventh, setting Woodruff up for his second win of the campaign. The veteran hurler threw 86 pitches in the outing, so he appears to be under only mild workload limitations. His next start is projected to be a tough road matchup against the Rangers next week.
Aug 6, 2023
Strikes out nine in tough-luck loss
Woodruff (1-1) was handed the loss Sunday against the Pirates after allowing two runs on four hits while striking out nine over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff was impressive overall in his return to the mound for the first time since April 7. While he limited the Pirates to just four hits, three of the four hits went for extra bases including two solo home runs. Woodruff reached 97 MPH with his fastball and sinker and looked like he hadn't missed a beat. The 30-year-old reached 85 pitches and threw well enough for a win but the Brewers' bats were quieted. Woodruff will look to change his luck when he matches up against the White Sox next weekend.
Aug 6, 2023
Activated for Sunday's start
Woodruff (shoulder) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list ahead of his start against the Pirates on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The 30-year-old has been sidelined by a Grade 2 subscapular strain since early April but will rejoin Milwaukee's rotation for Sunday's series finale versus Pittsburgh. Woodruff threw 72 pitches during his final rehab outing with Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday, so he'll likely face some workload limitations in his first start or two back in the big leagues.
Aug 3, 2023
Cleared to return Sunday
Woodruff (shoulder) is scheduled to return to the Brewers' rotation Sunday against the Pirates, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff posted an encouraging 3.09 ERA and 11:2 K:BB over 11.2 innings during his three-start minor league rehab assignment between High-A Wisconsin and Triple-A Nashville. He got up to 72 pitches Tuesday in his final outing on the farm and might be able to approach 85-to-90 pitches in his return to Milwaukee. The 30-year-old right-hander has been sidelined since mid-April because of a Grade 2 subscapular strain.
Jul 30, 2023
Next rehab start coming Tuesday
Woodruff (shoulder) confirmed that he'll make his next rehab start Tuesday at Triple-A Nashville, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
After two rehab starts at High-A Wisconsin, Woodruff will transfer his assignment to the Brewers' top affiliate for what could be his final outing on the farm before he makes his return from the 60-day injured list. In his most recent start for Wisconsin on Thursday and tossed four innings and 52 pitches. If he can cover five innings and push his pitch count into the 60-to-70 range Tuesday, the Brewers may be comfortable installing the right-hander back in the big-league rotation as soon as Aug. 7. Woodruff has been on the shelf since mid-April with a Grade 2 subscapular strain.
Jul 28, 2023
Works four innings
Woodruff (shoulder) completed four innings, allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out three in a rehab outing with High-A Wisconsin on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff made his second rehab appearance and increased his workload to 52 pitches. He'll likely need one more start prior to being activated, keeping him in line to return in early August.
Jul 24, 2023
Could be back in early August
Woodruff (shoulder) could rejoin the Brewers' rotation after two more rehab starts, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff will make a second rehab start with High-A Wisconsin on Thursday before likely moving up to Triple-A Nashville for an outing on August 1. He will be re-evaluated at that point, with an activation possible if all goes well. Woodruff has been on the sidelines since mid-April with a Grade 2 subscapular strain, but there's finally light at the end of the tunnel with his recovery.
Jul 22, 2023
Excellent in rehab debut
Woodruff (shoulder) struck out four batters over three scoreless innings in his rehab debut Saturday with High-A Wisconsin.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff scattered two hits and threw 27 of his 32 pitches for strikes in a highly encouraging outing against the High-A affiliate of the Reds. He's been sidelined since mid-April with a Grade 2 subscapular strain and still needs to get stretched out with a couple more minor-league starts, but the 30-year-old right-hander figures to return to the Brewers' rotation by mid-August if he can avoid setbacks.
Jul 18, 2023
Beginning assignment Saturday
Woodruff (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Wisconsin on Saturday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff has been on the injured list since mid-April, and he'll now begin ramping up toward a return to the Brewers' rotation. The 30-year-old righty has dealt with recovery issues in between bullpen sessions, but reportedly felt "great" after his latest session Thursday and remains on track to return around mid-August.
Jul 14, 2023
Expected back 'within month or so'
Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said in an interview on MLB Network on Friday that Woodruff (shoulder) should be ready to rejoin the rotation "within the next month or so," Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff threw another bullpen session Thursday, which went "great," per Arnold. The right-hander was shut down for a bit a couple weeks ago because he wasn't recovering well in between throwing sessions, but it would appear he's back on track. Woodruff has been sidelined since mid-April due to a Grade 2 subscapular strain and is surely going to need multiple rehab starts before being activated.
Jul 9, 2023
Completes bullpen session
Woodruff (shoulder) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Sunday with no issues and is scheduled for another session Thursday, Sophia Minnaert of Bally Sports Wisconsin reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander recently had his throwing program delayed due to less-than-ideal progress in his recovery, but his return to the mound Sunday was a success. Woodruff will likely need a few more bullpen sessions before being cleared to face live batters and eventually progressing to a minor-league rehab assignment.
Jul 5, 2023
Nearing mound workouts
Woodruff (shoulder) is aiming to throw a bullpen session this weekend, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff had to put a pause on his throwing program last week, but he's made it through a couple of successful flat-ground workouts over the last few days and is about ready to get back on a mound. Sidelined since April 11 due to a Grade 2 subscapular strain, the 30-year-old ace might have a shot to return to the Brewers' rotation around late July or early August if he is able to avoid further setbacks. Woodruff has logged only two major-league starts this season.
Jul 1, 2023
Next bullpen session delayed
Woodruff (shoulder) will delay his next bullpen session as he hasn't been recovering as well as the Brewers would like, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff made it just two starts into the season before suffering a shoulder strain which wound up being serious enough to require a trip to the 60-day injured list. He's been throwing since late May and has been throwing bullpens since mid-June, but the Brewers are seemingly unhappy with his progress. The team is characterizing his latest delay as merely an example of caution, but it's hard not to worry about even a minor setback when it comes to a pitcher's shoulder. The Brewers hope he'll get back on a mound early next week.
Jun 27, 2023
Throws another bullpen
Woodruff (shoulder) threw another bullpen session Tuesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff threw 25 pitches -- fastballs and off-speed -- during his bullpen session Tuesday. He is still scheduled to throw a few more bullpen sessions before beginning a rehab assignment, and his return timeline is still undetermined. Woodruff will continue his throwing program in Milwaukee over the All-Star break, meaning a late-July or early-August return is probable for the 30-year-old righty.
Jun 16, 2023
Bullpen session coming Saturday
Woodruff (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff has been playing catch from 120 feet and will reportedly increase his distance to 135-150 feet before beginning mound work. He landed on the IL in mid-April and was cleared to resumed throwing May 24. The Brewers will likely put Woodruff through multiple sessions and a rehab assignment before bringing him back to their rotation, so the 30-year-old ace is likely still a few weeks away from returning.
Jun 4, 2023
Remains limited to flat-ground work
Woodruff (shoulder) continues to throw off flat ground and remains hopeful to return from the 60-day injured list around the All-Star break, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff was cleared to start playing catch about two weeks ago and is likely gradually stretching out his throwing distance, but the Brewers aren't yet ready to have him advance to mound work. Once he's able to get a few bullpen sessions under his belt, Woodruff will then face hitters in live batting practice before likely pitching in at least one or two minor-league games or simulated games prior to being activated from the IL.
May 24, 2023
Resumes throwing
Woodruff (shoulder) said he resumed playing catch Wednesday after he recently took a 4-to-5-day pause in his throwing program, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff didn't reveal whether the brief hiatus was part of a pre-planned arrangement or the result of a minor setback, but either way, the right-hander continues to eye a late-June return from the 60-day injured list while he recovers from a Grade 2 subscapular strain in his right elbow. Before the Brewers are able to pinpoint a more definitive target date for his return, Woodruff will have to advance to throwing sustained long toss, complete multiple bullpen sessions and live batting practice sessions and likely make at least two minor-league rehab starts.
May 15, 2023
Transferred to 60-day IL
Woodruff was transferred to the 60-day injured list by the Brewers on Monday as he continues his recover from a sub-scapular strain in his right shoulder.
ANALYSIS
The Brewers have a tentative goal of Woodruff returning before the end of June and this move doesn't change that. It frees up a 40-man roster spot for the addition of Darin Ruf.
Apr 30, 2023
Chance to return by end of June
Brewers general manager Matt Arnold told reporters prior to Sunday's game against the Angels that Woodruff's MRI on his right shoulder was "very positive relative to what it could have been," and that the target date for his return is by the end of June, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff has been out since April 11 after being diagnosed with a sub-scapular strain in his right elbow. The right-hander will need to build back up his arm strength on top of his normal recovery, but it's positive news that Woodruff looks likely to be able to return to the Brewers' rotation before the All-Star break.
Apr 28, 2023
Undergoes follow-up MRI
Woodruff (shoulder) underwent a follow-up MRI on Wednesday, Sophia Minnaert of Bally Sports Wisconsin reports.
ANALYSIS
The results of the scan were apparently encouraging, as Minnaert writes that the Brewers will "move forward building him up" on a to-be-determined timeline. Woodruff was placed on the injured list April 11 due to right shoulder discomfort and was later diagnosed with a sub-scapular strain. He is expected to avoid surgery, but there's no clarity as to when he might be able to return to Milwaukee's rotation.
Apr 15, 2023
Diagnosed with sub-scapular strain
Brewers manager Craig Counsell announced Saturday that Woodruff has been diagnosed with a sub-scapular strain in his right shoulder, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The good news is that the injury will not require surgery, but the bad news is that Woodruff is going to miss more than just 15 days. He was placed on the injured list Tuesday with what was originally labeled as right shoulder inflammation. He'll be shut down from throwing for a stretch and there is no estimated timetable for his return to the Milwaukee rotation.
Apr 14, 2023
Doctors mulling options
Woodruff (shoulder) had an MRI on Wednesday and remains shut down while the doctors determine how best to proceed, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
This was relayed by manager Craig Counsell, and it certainly makes it sound like Woodruff's shoulder inflammation is fairly significant. Colin Rea had a strong spot start Thursday against the Padres and could remain in the rotation indefinitely as long as he keeps his head above water.
Apr 11, 2023
Headed for injured list
Woodruff will be placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday due to shoulder inflammation, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff reportedly wasn't recovering from his last start properly, so the Brewers erred on the side of caution and decided to place him on the injured list. If all goes according to plan, Woodruff won't spend more than the minimum amount of time on the IL. Janson Junk will be called up to take Woodruff's spot in the rotation and will likely start Wednesday.
Apr 7, 2023
Delivers 5.1 scoreless in win
Woodruff (1-0) earned the win Friday against the Cardinals after allowing four hits with four strikeouts and two walks over 5.1 scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander scattered four singles and generated 15 swinging strikes as St. Louis was unable to get anything going against him. Woodruff is off to a strong start in 2023 with just one run allowed and a 12:3 K:BB in 11.1 frames, and he tentatively lines up to make his next turn through the rotation next week in Arizona.
Apr 1, 2023
Strong six innings in season debut
Woodruff took a no decision Saturday despite a strong start in which he allowed one run on three hits and a walk in six innings while striking out eight.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff left the game with his team trailing, but it's hard to blame him for that fact. He didn't allow more than one baserunner in any inning, with the Cubs' lone run coming on a sixth-inning solo shot by Ian Happ. It was an excellent start to the year for Woodruff, who cruised to a 3.05 ERA last season even while missing time due to Raynaud's syndrome. He's lined up to return to the mound at home next Friday against the Cardinals.
Mar 15, 2023
Held back due to wet conditions
Woodruff won't make his scheduled start during Wednesday's Cactus League game versus the Diamondbacks due to wet field conditions, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
There's a good chance the game will be rained out, anyway, but either way Woodruff will get his work in on the side. If the contest is played, Matt Bush will serve as an opener and be followed by Gus Varland and Hoby Milner.
Mar 11, 2023
Sharp in second spring start
Woodruff struck out four batters and allowed an unearned run over 3.0 innings in Friday's exhibition game.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff tossed two scoreless frames in his first start of the spring, and he was sharp again in his second trip to the mound. Woodruff already appears ready for the regular season, and he is tentatively lined up to start the Brewers' second game of the campaign, which will come Apr. 1 against the Cubs.
Jan 13, 2023
Settles at $10.8 million
Woodruff signed a one-year, $10.8 million contract with the Brewers on Friday to avoid arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It's a substantial raise for Woodruff, who was in his third of four arbitration-eligible years. The right-hander posted a 3.05 ERA and 190:42 K:BB over 153.1 innings in 2022. He's not as good of a bet as some of the other top-shelf starters to stay healthy, but as far as pure performance goes he measures up to almost anyone.
Oct 4, 2022
Quality start versus Diamondbacks
Woodruff tossed six innings, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out seven in Monday's extra-inning win over the Diamondbacks. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff surrendered a solo homer to Cooper Hummel in the top of the third inning before a Sergio Alcantara sacrifice fly in the fifth frame drove in the final tally on his line. The right-hander was able to toss a scoreless sixth inning and post his sixth consecutive quality start. Woodruff finished the regular season on a hot streak, producing a 1.62 ERA and 0.79 WHIP with 54 strikeouts over 39 innings in his final six outings.
Sep 29, 2022
10 strikeouts during win
Woodruff (13-4) earned the win Wednesday without allowing a run on five hits and one walk over six innings in a 5-1 victory over the Cardinals. He struck out 10.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff did not allow an extra-base hit in his stellar six innings Wednesday night. The righty has been spectacular during his last five starts, posting a 1.36 ERA and 0.82 WHIP over 33 innings; however, the 29-year-old has allowed 10 home runs over his last 10 outings.
Sep 23, 2022
Dominant in win
Woodruff (12-4) earned the win Thursday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over six innings against the Reds. He struck out 11.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff shut down the Reds for most of the evening until Kyle Farmer took him deep with a two-out, solo homer in the sixth inning. The right-hander produced 17 swinging strikes and struck out three batters in both the second and third innings. Woodruff has gone four consecutive starts without allowing more than two runs and holds a 1.67 ERA over that stretch with 37 strikeouts to only six walks. He's also struck out 10 or more batters in three straight contests.
Sep 18, 2022
Pitches eight-inning gem
Woodruff (11-4) gave up one earned run on five hits and one walk while striking out 10 over eight innings to earn the win in a 4-1 victory over the Yankees on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff had success elevating his fastball and attacking the upper part of the zone against the Yankees hitters. He garnered 16 swinging strikes and now boasts an excellent 162 strikeouts in 135.2 innings pitched this season. Woodruff has been in a groove lately, and has 21 strikeouts over his last 14 innings pitched. The 29-year-old right-hander is tentatively expected to make his next start at Cincinnati.
Sep 11, 2022
Fans 11 in win
Woodruff (10-4) earned the win against the Reds on Sunday. He allowed two runs on five hits and one walk over six innings with 11 strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff had the Reds guessing all afternoon as he fanned 11 on the day, good for his fourth start of 10 or more strikeouts this season. The quality start was good news for the righty as he had been pulled before reaching six innings in three of his previous five starts heading into Sunday. He tentatively lines up to face the Yankees in his next start.
Sep 7, 2022
Impressive in no decision
Woodruff pitched seven innings, giving up one run on two hits and two walks while striking out five in Tuesday's extra-innings loss to the Rockies. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff was nearly able to blank the Rockies on Tuesday, surrendering just a solo homer to Elehuris Montero in the bottom of the third inning. He left the contest with a 6-1 advantage, but an eighth inning blow up by the bullpen forced the game to go into extras. The right-hander rebounded well after surrendering five runs to the Diamondbacks on Thursday, allowing two or fewer runs for the fourth time in five outings. Woodruff now owns a 3.41 ERA and 1.13 WHIP with 141 strikeouts over 121.1 innings in 22 starts this year.
Sep 2, 2022
Surrenders five runs in loss
Woodruff (9-4) took the loss against Arizona on Thursday, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four batters over 5.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff fell behind early, allowing two runs on a Christian Walker homer in the first inning. He yielded another run in the second and two more in the sixth to finish with his worst outing since early May. Woodruff has been stuck on nine wins since the end of July, though this was his first loss following five straight no-decisions during that span. His numbers are down overall compared to last season, but he's still pitched relatively well with a 3.54 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 136:34 K:BB over 114.1 innings on the campaign.
Aug 28, 2022
Strikes out ten batters
Woodruff did not factor into the decision against the Cubs on Saturday, allowing no runs on four hits while striking out 10 and walking one over six innings.
ANALYSIS
Despite pitching a six-inning, 10-strikeout gem Satuday, Woodruff was not granted the win. Instead, it went to Taylor Rogers who relieved him for the top of the seventh inning, just before the Milwaukee offense put up four runs in the bottom of the inning. Woodruff has picked up three quality starts with a 2.70 ERA this month. His season ERA sits at 3.31 after Saturday's performance.
Aug 21, 2022
Earns no-decision Sunday
Woodruff did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over 5.2 innings against the Cubs. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff failed to complete six innings for the second time in as many starts, as manager David Ross pulled him at 105 pitches after walking Seiya Suzuki with two outs in the sixth. The two runs allowed came from solo home runs off the bats of Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki. The righty has now allowed two or more earned runs in each of his last four starts, including two home runs allowed in each of the last three. He will take a 3.51 ERA into his next start.
Aug 17, 2022
Whiffs eight across five frames
Woodruff didn't factor into the decision during Tuesday's 5-4 win against the Dodgers, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in five innings.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff was provided an early two-run lead and kept Los Angeles off the board until the fifth inning, when he surrendered solo shots to Joey Gallo and Mookie Betts. The 29-year-old fired 64 of 93 pitches for strikes with 16 of the swinging variety and struck out as many batters as he had in his previous two starts combined. The five innings pitched snapped Woodruff's quality start streak at four, though he should have a solid opportunity to begin a new streak with a tantalizing start against the Cubs tentatively lined up for Sunday.
Aug 10, 2022
Sharp in no-decision Wednesday
Woodruff didn't factor into the decision Wednesday, giving up three runs on four hits over seven innings in a 4-3 extra-inning win over the Rays. He struck out five without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
Homers by Yu Chang and Randy Arozarena left Woodruff headed for his fourth loss of the season, but the Brewers were able to tie things up in the ninth and walk it off in the 10th. The right-hander wasn't his usual dominant self, but he fired an efficient 85 pitches (58 strikes) and didn't issue a walk for the first time in six starts. Woodruff will carry a 3.52 ERA and 109:27 K:BB through 92 innings on the year into his next outing.

Takes no decision
Woodruff did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks over 6.1 innings in a 5-4 loss to the Pirates. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff struggled with his command in the second inning, throwing a wild pitch to allow Greg Allen to advance to third before the baserunner ultimately scored on a passed ball by Victor Caratini. The right-hander settled down and recorded four scoreless frames before he allowed three of the first four hitters to reach in the seventh inning, including an RBI single by Tucupita Marcano. Woodruff was tagged with another earned run when Brad Boxberger allowed one of his inherited runners to score on a Ben Gamel single. Since a stint on the IL, Woodruff has posted a 2.18 ERA across seven starts (41.1 innings), but the ace has walked multiple batters in four of his last five outings.
Jul 30, 2022
Picks up ninth win
Woodruff (9-3) earned the win Friday at Boston after allowing one run on four hits with nine strikeouts and two walks over 6.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff generated 19 swinging strikes on 101 total pitches, and he kept the Red Sox off the board besides besides giving up a run on back-to-back doubles during the sixth inning. The right-hander has been dominant in six starts since returning from the injured list in late June with a 4-0 record, 2.06 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 48:11 K:BB across 35 frames.
Jul 24, 2022
Fans eight in victory
Woodruff (8-3) earned the win over Colorado on Saturday, pitching six innings and allowing one run on four hits and one walk while striking out eight.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff got off to a shaky start when he surrendered a run on two hits and a walk in the first inning, but the Rockies were unable to do much against him after that. The right-hander finished with an even 100 pitches -- 70 of which were strikes -- and induced 17 swings-and-misses. Woodruff has notched a quality start in three of his past four outings and missed by one out in the lone appearance during that stretch in which he's fallen short.
Jul 16, 2022
Takes no-decision
Woodruff allowed two runs on five hits, five walks and a hit batsman while striking out four in 5.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff hit a batter for the first time since his first start of the season, and the five walks were a season high in this inefficient outing. He was still in line for the win when he exited, but Josh Hader's ninth-inning meltdown denied Woodruff a decision. The right-hander now has a 3.93 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 84:21 K:BB across 66.1 innings in 13 starts this year.
Jul 9, 2022
Strikes out nine in no-decision
Woodruff registered a no-decision during Saturday's 4-3 loss to Pittsburgh, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks with nine strikeouts in six innings.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff was perfect through four innings and held Pittsburgh scoreless through six, but it fell apart in the seventh when he departed after surrendering three straight hits to lead off the inning. The three runs surrendered snapped a streak of five starts allowing two runs or fewer, though the 29-year-old's 4.01 ERA should continue to approve thanks to a 2.99 FIP. Woodruff is scheduled to pitch again next weekend against San Francisco.
Jul 3, 2022
Tosses six shutout frames
Woodruff (7-3) allowed six hits over six scoreless innings Sunday, striking out eight and earning a win over Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff allowed just one extra-base hit in Sunday's dominant outing. After a month-long stint on the injured list, the 29-year-old righty has won his last two starts while posting an 18:0 K:BB and allowing just one run. On the year, he's sporting a 71:13 K:BB with a 3.95 ERA through 54.2 frames. Woodruff is lined up for a rematch against the Pirates at home next week.
Jun 28, 2022
Fans 10 in return
Woodruff (6-3) earned the win Tuesday in Tampa Bay, striking out 10 in five innings while allowing a run on two hits.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff (hand) was making his first start since going on the injured list on May 30 and was masterful in his return. The righty struck out seven of the first nine batters he faced and retired the Rays in order over the first three innings. Both hits he allowed came in the fourth inning, leading to Tampa Bay's lone run against him. After some struggles to begin the season, Woodruff appeared to have found his way in his last three starts before going on the IL, and on Tuesday he picked up where he left off. He has allowed five runs over his last 20 innings while posting a 26:3 K:BB.
Jun 28, 2022
Comes off IL
The Brewers reinstated Woodruff (hand) from the 15-day injured list prior to his scheduled start Tuesday at Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff was initially placed on the IL on May 30 with a high-ankle sprain, and though he quickly moved past that injury, his return date was pushed back when he was diagnosed June 10 with Raynaud's syndrome, a condition that caused numbness in three of the fingers on his pitching hand. The right-hander no longer seems to be exhibiting symptoms of the condition, as he was sharp during his second rehab start with High-A Wisconsin five days ago. He covered five innings in that outing and shouldn't have any major restrictions with his workload as he slots back into the Milwaukee rotation this week.
Jun 26, 2022
Set to start Tuesday
Woodruff (hand) is listed as Milwaukee's probable starter for Tuesday's game at Tampa Bay, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old declared himself ready to return after throwing 74 pitches over five innings during a minor-league rehab start Thursday, and he'll pitch Tuesday to remain on a five-day schedule. Woodruff is likely to face some minor workload limitations after being sidelined for the past month, but he should have a decent chance of pitching deep enough to qualify for a potential victory.
Jun 24, 2022
Ready for return
Woodruff (hand) threw 74 pitches and allowed one run across five innings in a rehab start with High-A Wisconsin on Thursday, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After the game, Woodruff stated, "I'm fully ready to go. I'm not sure where they're [the Brewers] are going to try to line me up but hopefully the next series. Fully ready." Woodruff has been sidelined since May 30 and will miss nearly a full month of action. While the team hasn't made its plans for Woodruff official, he'll likely start at some point during the team's upcoming series against the Rays.
Jun 20, 2022
Making second rehab start this week
Woodruff (hand) said he expects to make his second rehab start with High-A Wisconsin on Thursday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After striking out seven in 2.2 innings (51 pitches) in his first rehab outing for Triple-A Nashville over the weekend, Woodruff might have been a candidate to return from the 15-day injured list this week to start for Milwaukee while on a restricted pitch count, but the organization will instead let him get fully stretched out in the minors. Assuming he's able to increase his pitch count Thursday while escaping the rehab start setback-free, Woodruff should rejoin the big-league rotation for next week's series in Tampa Bay. Woodruff was initially placed on the 15-day injured list May 30 due to a sprained ankle, but he's since fully healed from that injury and is now working his way back from a case of hand numbness related to a condition called Raynaud's syndrome.
Jun 18, 2022
K machine in rehab start
Woodruff (Raynaud's syndrome) struck out seven of the eight batters he retired in 2.2 innings for Triple-A Nashville on Saturday. He threw 51 pitches (37 strikes).
ANALYSIS
Woodruff is expected to fly to Wisconsin on Sunday and then make one more rehab start for High-A Wisconsin before joining the rotation. If this schedule holds, he could return around June 29 in Tampa Bay.
Jun 16, 2022
May need two rehab starts
Woodruff (Raynaud's syndrome) could make one more rehab start next week for High-A Wisconsin before rejoining the big-league rotation, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
First, Woodruff will start Saturday for Triple-A Nashville, and if that goes well, he will fly back to Milwaukee on Sunday and potentially make one more rehab start for the nearby affiliate. A return to the big-league rotation following Saturday's rehab start hasn't been officially ruled out, but it's seeming like Woodruff is tracking toward a return at the end of the month either in Tampa Bay on June 29 or in Pittsburgh on June 30.
Jun 15, 2022
Rehab start on tap
Woodruff (hand) will make a rehab start Saturday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
While manager Craig Counsell didn't say which minor-league affiliate Woodruff will join this weekend, the right-hander has been cleared to return to game action after throwing a 40-pitch bullpen session Tuesday. Woodruff has been on the injured list since May 30, and it's possible that he'll be able to rejoin the Brewers following a single rehab start.
Jun 14, 2022
Trending in right direction
Woodruff (Raynaud's syndrome) was able to throw a few breaking balls during a 40-pitch bullpen session in New York on Tuesday, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
He said it was "a big step" to be able to throw all of his pitches, as the offspeed pitches had been the ones he had struggled with due to the hand numbness associated with Raynaud's syndrome. Woodruff said he has been on medicine for about a week and that he has noticed daily improvement with how he has been able to grip the ball, per Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He also added that warm weather helps, so things could keep trending up from here.
Jun 10, 2022
Dealing with hand numbness
Woodruff (ankle) is experiencing symptoms of Raynaud's syndrome, including numbness in the middle three fingers of his right hand, and doesn't have a timeline for his return from the 15-day injured list, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old is fully recovered from the ankle sprain that sent him to the injured list in late May, but he's now contending with an issue with his throwing hand. The major problems occur when Woodruff attempts to throw his slider and curveball, so he's scheduled to throw fastballs and changeups off the mound Saturday, per Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The right-hander has shown some improvement since starting a treatment program, but it's unclear when he may be able to rejoin Milwaukee's starting rotation.
Jun 9, 2022
Resumes mound work
Woodruff (ankle) resumed throwing off a mound Thursday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff said last week that he hoped to return from the injured list following a relatively minimal absence, andThursday's throwing session marked the first time he threw off a mound since sustaining his ankle injury May 27. It's possible that the right-hander will need additional time to ramp up his workload, but it seems unlikely that he'll require a significant absence. Even if Woodruff isn't able to return when he's first eligible Sunday, he'll presumably be in the mix to return to game action sometime next week.
Jun 2, 2022
Hopeful for minimal IL stay
Woodruff (ankle) played catch Thursday and maintains hope that he'll be ready to return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible June 12 or shortly thereafter, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff noted that his sprained right ankle felt better Thursday than it had at any point since he suffered the injury May 27. So long as the swelling in his ankle continues to subside as he starts the ramp-up process, Woodruff should have a good chance at meeting his goal of returning from the IL in expedient fashion. Jason Alexander entered the rotation Wednesday as a replacement for Woodruff and should get at least one more turn after turning in a quality start in his MLB debut.
May 30, 2022
Placed on injured list
Woodruff landed on the 15-day injured list Monday with a high ankle sprain, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff left his start Friday against the Cardinals with what was previously called right ankle discomfort. Prior reports suggested he could be ready to return for his next start, which was scheduled for Wednesday against the Cubs, but he'll wind up missing at least two turns in the rotation and potentially more, with the Brewers yet to set a target date for his return. The team will have to dip into its depth options to cover for Woodruff, as Aaron Ashby has already joined the rotation in place of Freddy Peralta (lat) and Ethan Small is starting the first game of Monday's doubleheader against the Cubs.
May 29, 2022
Could be ready to go Wednesday
Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Woodruff's right ankle injury may not be significant enough to prevent the right-hander from making his next scheduled turn through the rotation Wednesday in Chicago against the Cubs, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff's most recent start Friday in St. Louis was cut short after he experienced irritation in the ankle during the fifth inning. For his part, Woodruff told Mark Saxon of MLB.com that he expects to be fine for his next start, but the Brewers won't take any chances with the 29-year-old if they sense that the ankle issue will hinder him from a command standpoint. Woodruff will likely be observed closely during a throwing session Monday before the Brewers decide on his status for this week.
May 27, 2022
Exits start with ankle injury
Woodruff was removed from Friday's start against the Cardinals with right ankle discomfort, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old appeared to tweak his ankle while throwing his warmup pitches ahead of the bottom of the fifth inning, and he left the field after being looked at by the training staff. Woodruff allowed two runs on two hits with four strikeouts and one walk across four innings prior to his exit, and his availability going forward is now in question.
May 21, 2022
Victorious in quality start
Woodruff (5-2) earned the win during Saturday's 5-1 victory over Washington, allowing one run on five hits with six strikeouts in six innings.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff tossed a season-high 100 pitches with 70 finding the zone and stayed out of trouble beside a Lane Thomas solo home run in the third inning. The quality start is only the 29-year-old's second in eight turns though his 11.1 K/9 are nearly a full strikeout better than his career 10.3 mark. He's scheduled to pitch next midweek.
May 15, 2022
Picks up win over Marlins
Woodruff (4-2) allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks over five innings Sunday, striking out six and earning a win over Miami.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff coughed up a two-run single to Payton Henry in the second inning after the frame began with an error. He was then taken deep for a solo shot in the third by Jorge Soler. The 6-foot-4 righty saw his season ERA drop to 5.35 through 33.2 innings but he's given up five home runs over his last three outings. Woodruff will look to string together victories in his projected home start against Washington next weekend.
May 9, 2022
Ineffective versus Reds
Woodruff (3-2) was charged with the loss Monday after surrendering six runs (five earned) over 4.1 innings against the Reds. He allowed eight hits and walked two while striking out six.
ANALYSIS
After giving up just one run over four innings, Woodruff imploded in the bottom of the fifth inning, surrendering five runs in the inning. The five-run frame was capped off with a Brandon Drury three-run homer, giving the Reds a 5-3 lead. One more run would score after Woodruff had been pulled from the game. After posting two straight scoreless outings, the 29-year-old has given up 12 earned runs over 14 innings in his last three starts. The difficult stretch has seen his ERA jump from 4.30 to 5.97. He'll look to get back on the right track in his next start, which is tentatively set to come Sunday versus the Marlins.
May 4, 2022
Punches out 12 in win
Woodruff (3-1) picked up the win over the Reds on Tuesday, allowing three runs on four hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out 12 and did not issue a walk.
ANALYSIS
Outside of a two-batter stretch when he allowed back-to-back homers to Tommy Pham and Mike Moustakas, Woodruff was utterly dominant. He had 19 called strikes and 18 swinging strikes on 95 pitches. Afterward, Woodruff told Adam McCalvy of MLB.com that he's been "working extremely hard to get back to myself" after a disappointing start to the season; even after Tuesday's gem, Woodruff still has a 5.18 ERA. This performance was a big step in the right direction.
Apr 26, 2022
Four earned against Pirates
Woodruff did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Pirates, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six over four innings.
ANALYSIS
One of the runs against Woodruff touched home after he exited the game, with Brent Suter allowing an inherited runner to score. Woodruff now sports a 5.30 ERA this season. That number is misleading -- Woodruff had just turned in consecutive scoreless outings in his last two starts prior to Tuesday -- but his strikeouts are down. It's something to keep an eye on as the season progresses.
Apr 21, 2022
Bags another win
Woodruff tossed six scoreless innings and picked up the win in Wednesday's victory over the Pirates. He allowed just one hit and posted a 9:2 K:BB in the contest.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff has turned things around in a big way after allowing seven earned runs in his season debut, going 2-0 over his last two starts while giving up just four hits and posting an 11:3 K:BB over 11.0 innings. Woodruff toed the rubber only once again Pittsburgh last season, but he is set to face them for a second straight start next week.
Apr 15, 2022
Five shutout innings
Woodruff (1-1) allowed three hits and one walk with two strikeouts across five scoreless innings to earn the win Thursday against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
After a poor start to open the season, Woodruff rebounded with a strong performance to earn his first win. He did not allow an extra-base hit and also retired the final six batters he faced. While Woodruff only managed two strikeouts, he induced 12 swinging strike on 89 total pitches -- an indication that he was still plenty deceptive. Woodruff currently lines up to make his next start Wednesday against the Pirates.
Apr 10, 2022
Crushed by Cubs
Woodruff (0-1) gave up six runs on seven hits, three walks and two hit batsmen while striking out two in 3.2 innings in a 9-0 loss Saturday against the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff needed 40 pitches to get through the three-run first and continued to struggle throughout his outing. It was death by a thousand cuts for the former All-Star, as the Cubs only had one extra-base hit and 11 of the 22 batters reached safely. Following a spring where he allowed six home runs in 11.2 innings, Saturday's starts certainly raised some eyebrows. That said, the 29-year-old has been one of the best starters in baseball the last three seasons with a combined 3.00 ERA over 65 starts during that span. His next start should be late next week against St. Louis.
Apr 8, 2022
Start bumped back by weather
Woodruff won't make his scheduled start Friday against the Cubs as the game has been postponed due to poor weather, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader in late May. The Brewers will push their starters back by a day, so Woodruff will take his turn Saturday at Wrigley Field, lining him up for a start in Baltimore the following Thursday.
Mar 22, 2022
Gets $6.8M to avoid arbitration
Woodruff and the Brewers agreed Tuesday on a one-year, $6.8 million contract to avoid arbitration, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff will get a $3.52 million raise after he showed no signs of wearing down last season over the course of 179.1 innings, up nearly 60 frames from his previous career-high total in 2019. Over his 30 starts in 2021, Woodruff proved to be one of the baseball's top No. 2 pitchers, finishing with a 2.56 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 211:43 K:BB. He's scheduled to make his first Cactus League start Thursday against the Diamondbacks, tentatively lining him up to start the Brewers' second game of the regular season April 8 in Chicago, while reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes likely gets the Opening Day nod versus the Cubs.
Oct 9, 2021
Out-dueled in Game 2
Woodruff (0-1) took the loss Saturday in Game 2 of the NLDS versus Atlanta. He pitched six innings, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old was able to hold the Atlanta batters to just three runs, with the final blow being a solo home run off the bat of Austin Riley in the sixth inning. Woodruff was able to throw 62 of his 91 pitches for strikes and register a quality start, but Atlanta starter Max Fried out-dueled him with six scoreless innings. The right-hander is currently not expected to start again this best-of-five series, though that could change depending on how everything plays out.
Sep 29, 2021
Limited to short outing
Woodruff allowed two earned runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out three across four innings Tuesday against St. Louis. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff was limited to only 63 pitches, a move made to preserve his innings with the Brewers having already clinched the division. Prior to his exit, Woodruff surrendered two runs in the fourth inning -- one of which came on a solo home run by Dylan Carlson. This will likely serve as Woodruff's last outing of the regular season, and if that is the case he will end the campaign with an excellent 2.56 ERA with a 211:43 K:BB across 179.1 frames.
Sep 22, 2021
Strong outing, takes loss
Woodruff (9-10) allowed one earned run on two hits and a walk while striking out 10 across six innings to take the loss Tuesday against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff dominated the Cardinals to record his fifth double-digit strikeout effort of the season, yet he still took the loss. The lone run against him came in the fifth inning, though even in that frame he allowed only a leadoff single. Woodruff has now turned in quality starts in three of his last four outings, and he has maintained a 2.52 ERA with a 208:43 K:BB across 175.1 innings on the season.
Sep 15, 2021
Quality start in loss
Woodruff (9-9) allowed three runs on four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in six innings, taking the loss Wednesday versus Detroit.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander was reasonably effective, but he ran into trouble in the fourth and fifth innings. Milwaukee's offense only mustered three hits in support of Woodruff, leaving him to take a loss despite his third quality start in his last four outings. For the season, the 28-year-old has a 2.55 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 198:42 K:BB through 169.1 innings. He's projected to make his next start versus St. Louis next week.
Sep 15, 2021
Cleared to start Wednesday
Woodruff (illness) will start Wednesday's game against the Tigers in Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff was pushed off his most recent scheduled start over the weekend in Cleveland while he dealt with a stomach bug, but the All-Star right-hander looks like he'll be ready to go Wednesday on eight days' rest. Through nine second-half starts, Woodruff has gone 2-4 with a 3.42 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and a 62:16 K:BB in 50 innings.
Sep 11, 2021
Start pushed back to Wednesday
Woodruff will not start Sunday against Cleveland due to a stomach bug, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. His next start will come Wednesday in Detroit.
ANALYSIS
This is a tough break for those banking on a start from Woodruff this week. He hasn't pitched since Sept. 6, so he will be well-rested for a favorable matchup against the Tigers. Eric Lauer will start Sunday.
Sep 6, 2021
Coughs up four runs
Woodruff (9-8) allowed four runs on nine hits and a walk over six innings Monday, striking out six and taking a loss against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff was cursed by the long ball Monday with all four runs scoring via homers. He allowed a two-run shot to Bryce Harper in the first inning and solo home runs by Freddy Galvis and Brad Miller in the second and fourth frames. He's now 2-5 with a 3.47 ERA and a 72:17 K:BB over his last 11 starts. Woodruff will carry a 2.48 ERA into his projected start in Cleveland this weekend.
Sep 1, 2021
Notches ninth victory
Woodruff (9-7) earned the win over San Francisco on Tuesday, allowing one run on five hits and three walks while striking out eight over six innings.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander threw 70 of 92 pitches for strikes and induced an impressive 19 swings-and-misses. The only run he allowed came via a Brandon Belt homer in the sixth inning. Woodruff has bounced back from yielding a season-high six runs to St. Louis on Aug. 19 by allowing only one earned run over his subsequent 12 frames. He'll carry a 2.35 ERA and 185:40 K:BB into his next start, which is tentatively slated to come at home against Philadelphia on Monday.
Aug 26, 2021
Bounces back with dominant effort
Woodruff (8-7) earned the win over the Reds on Wednesday after throwing six shutout innings while allowing just four hits and striking out 10.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff rebounded extremely well from arguably his worst start of the season with one of his more effective outings of the year. The 28-year-old was blistered by the Cardinals for six runs over five innings last week but the closest the Reds came to scoring against him was in the opening inning after a hit batter and a single put two runners on with nobody out. Woodruff had his stuff working really well, as he induced 18 whiffs and struck out 10 hitters for the first time since May 30. He now owns a 2.38 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 177:37 K:BB over 151.1 innings and tentatively lines up for a meeting against the Giants next week in a battle between two of the best clubs in baseball.
Aug 20, 2021
Rare disappointing start
Woodruff (7-7) took the loss in Thursday's 8-4 defeat at the hands of the Cardinals, allowing six runs on eight hits and one walk with four strikeouts across five innings.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff was solid through the first four innings, allowing a single run, but fell apart in the fifth, permitting five runs on five hits to put Milwaukee in a 6-4 hole. The start was Woodruff's first allowing more than five runs in 24 turns, and he now possesses a 2.48 ERA that's still top five in MLB, 0.94 WHIP and 167:37 K:BB.
Aug 12, 2021
Cleared of injury
The Brewers announced that Woodruff's removal after three innings during his start Thursday against the Cubs wasn't due to an injury, Sophia Minnaert of Bally Sports Wisconsin reports. He departed with a 5-1 lead and gave up an unearned run on two hits and three walks while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff initially appeared to have suffered a injury to his leg when he was struck by a Andrew Romine line drive that he corralled and tossed to first base for the final out in the bottom of the third. However, no physical issue was behind Woodruff's removal, and Brewers manager Craig Counsell may have just elected to end the All-Star right-hander's day early due to his poor control (74 pitches, 46 strikes). Given that Woodruff was pitching on four days' rest for one of the few times all season due to Milwaukee having to shorten its rotation from six to five men with Eric Lauer and Adrian Houser on the COVID-19 injured list, the Brewers may have had additional incentive to pull Woodruff from the contest. He'll tentatively line up to make his next start in the Brewers' series in St. Louis next week.
Aug 12, 2021
Leaves after being struck by liner
Woodruff was removed from his start Thursday against the Cubs after he was struck by a comebacker in the right hamstring in the bottom of the third inning, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. He gave up an unearned run on two hits and three walks while striking out three over three frames.
ANALYSIS
On the play in question, Woodruff appeared to knock down the line drive with his glove before it bounced into his leg, so he wouldn't seem to be dealing with a significant injury. The Brewers will presumably provide an update on Woodruff's condition later Thursday.
Aug 8, 2021
Shines in quality start
Woodruff went six innings Saturday against the Giants, allowing one run on six hits and a walk with eight strikeouts. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
The only blemish on Woodruff's box score was a solo home run by Brandon Belt in the fourth inning that squared the game at 1-1. Woodruff exited with a 2-1 lead but the Giants rallied to tie the game off Brent Suter in the ninth. The 28-year-old Woodruff boasts a 2.23 ERA and 0.89 WHIP with a 160:33 K:BB in 137.1 innings this season and is lined up for a road matchup against the Cubs in his next scheduled start.
Jul 31, 2021
Strikes out six in loss
Woodruff (7-6) allowed three runs on eight hits and one walk with six strikeouts through 5.1 innings, taking the loss in Saturday's 8-1 defeat to the Braves.
ANALYSIS
There's a strong argument that Woodruff deserved a better fate Saturday night. With the game tied at one and Dansby Swanson at the plate, Woodruff was severely squeezed on a 2-2 curveball that saw Swanson himself even take a step back towards the dugout. On the very next pitch, Swanson homered off Woodruff to give the Braves a 3-1 lead and knock the right-hander out of the game. Swanson's shot is the first homer the two-time All-Star has allowed since June 23. Woodruff is now winless in his last five starts. He's slated to pitch again Friday against the Nationals.
Jul 18, 2021
Fans eight in no-decision
Woodruff went 5.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and four walks in a no-decision against the Reds. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff struggled with walks, issuing a season-high four free passes, but still limited the Reds to a pair of runs in the second inning, only one of which was earned. Woodruff is winless (0-1) in his first three July starts, but still owns a sterling 2.04 ERA and 0.83 WHIP in 119 innings overall this season, posting a 137:29 K:BB ratio. He's tentatively scheduled for a home start next week against the White Sox.
Jul 11, 2021
Ends first half with quality start
Woodruff allowed a run on nine hits over six innings in Sunday's loss to the Reds. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff was tagged for three hits and a run in the first inning but settled in to keep Cincinnati scoreless over the next five frames. He's allowed just one run in three of his last four starts, lowering his ERA to a stellar 2.06 entering the All-Star break. The 28-year-old owns a 129:25 K:BB through 113.1 innings after recording his fewest strikeouts in an outing since May 18.

Fades late against Mets
Woodruff (7-4) took the loss Monday as the Brewers were downed 4-2 by the Mets, allowing four runs on four hits and a walk over 6.1 innings. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
The score was tied 1-1 heading into the seventh inning, but Woodruff hit a wall as four of the first five Mets who came to the plate in the frame reached base, chasing the right-hander from the game. Woodruff has given up more than three runs in a start only twice this season, but both have come in his last four outings. He sports a still-stellar 2.10 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 125:25 K:BB through 107.1 innings, and the 28-year-old lines up for one more turn through the rotation before the All-Star break, at home against the Reds this weekend.

Fans eight Cubs in win
Woodruff (7-3) picked up the win Tuesday, giving up one run on four hits and three walks over six innings in a 2-1 victory over the Cubs. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander fired 66 of 104 pitches for strikes en route to his 13th quality start in 16 trips to the mound. Woodruff has allowed more than two earned runs only twice all year, and he'll take a 1.87 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 119:27 K:BB through 101 innings into his next outing.

Bounces back with gem
Woodruff (6-3) earned the win Wednesday versus Arizona. He allowed one run on three hits and two walks with nine strikeouts in seven innings.
ANALYSIS
After a brutal start last Thursday in Colorado, the right-hander returned to form. The only damage on Woodruff's line was a Christian Walker solo home run in the seventh inning. Woodruff also struck out nine or more batters for the fifth time in his last nine starts. The 28-year-old has a sparkling 1.89 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 111:21 K:BB across 95 innings. His next start is expected to be against the Cubs next week.
Jun 18, 2021
Hit hard early in loss
Woodruff (5-3) allowed five runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five over five innings. He took the loss Thursday versus Colorado.
ANALYSIS
In a nightmarish first inning, the right-hander allowed four hits and a walk. Two of the hits were a grand slam by C.J. Cron and a solo home run by Garrett Hampson. This was arguably Woodruff's worst start of the year -- the five runs allowed were a season high, and it was just the third time he didn't pitch into the sixth inning. He's still been excellent more often than not with a 1.94 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 102:19 K:BB across 88 innings. He'll look to get back on track next week in a favorable road start versus lowly Arizona.
Jun 12, 2021
Wins third straight decision
Woodruff (5-2) allowed two runs on four hits over seven innings Friday, striking out five and earning a win over the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
The only damage against Woodruff came from two solo home runs by Ben Gamel and Gregory Polanco. He's now gone 12 consecutive starts allowing two or fewer runs, lowering his season ERA to 1.52 alongside a 97:17 K:BB. The 28-year-old has won three of his last four starts, yielding just four runs in 26 innings during that span. Woodruff is projected to start in Colorado next week.
Jun 5, 2021
Whiffs nine in no-decision
Woodruff allowed two runs on six hits and a walk with nine strikeouts over five innings versus Arizona on Saturday. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff was in line for the win when he exited the game, but Brent Suter allowed three runs in the seventh inning to tie the game. It was still a solid effort from Woodruff. The right-hander has been excellent this year with a 1.42 ERA, 0.74 WHIP and 92:17 K:BB across 76 innings. He'll look to be a bit more efficient versus Pittsburgh in next weekend's series.
May 30, 2021
Dominant against Nationals
Woodruff (4-2) allowed two hits and two walks while striking out 10 in seven scoreless innings to earn the win against the Nationals on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff tossed seven shutout innings in his last start, and he replicated the feat Sunday and earned his second straight win. The right-hander has now allowed two or fewer runs in each of his last 10 starts and has recorded double-digit strikeouts in three of his last five outings. Woodruff tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Diamondbacks on Saturday.
May 24, 2021
Fans eight in dominant win
Woodruff (3-2) allowed three hits over seven shutout innings, striking out eight and earning a win over San Diego.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff allowed just three singles in his terrific outing and only one Padre reached scoring position against him. Through his 10 starts this season, the 6-foot-4 righty has allowed two or fewer runs in all but one. He lowered his season ERA to an outstanding 1.41 alongside a 73:14 K:BB. Woodruff is projected to start in Washington this weekend.
May 19, 2021
Suffers tough loss Tuesday
Woodruff (2-2) allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out four over 7.2 innings as he took the loss against the Royals on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff kept the Royals off the scoreboard up until the eighth inning after they were able to rally together two runs which were enough to put the Brewers away. Despite taking the loss, the 28-year-old Woodruff tossed his eighth consecutive quality start and has a stunning 1.58 ERA, 0.74 WHIP and 65:14 K:BB over 57 innings. He'll look to continue his dominance and get back in the win column in his next projected start against the Padres early next week.
May 13, 2021
Dominates Cardinals
Woodruff allowed one earned run on three hits and one walk while striking out 10 across 7.2 innings Wednesday against the Cardinals. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff turned in another excellent start, racking up double-digit strikeouts for the second consecutive outing. He has been remarkably consistent early this season, throwing at least six innings in each of his last seven starts and allowing more than one run only once in that span. For the season Woodruff has maintained a 1.64 ERA with a 61:12 K:BB across 49.1 innings. He's projected to take mound next Tuesday at Kansas City.
May 7, 2021
Tough-luck loser
Woodruff (2-1) allowed one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out 11 across 6.2 innings to take the loss Thursday against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff took the loss through no fault of his own, as the lone blemish of his start came on a solo home run by Alec Bohm. Otherwise, Woodruff took care of the Phillies lineup by racking up 23 swinging strikes on 103 total pitches to back up his first double-digit strikeout effort of the campaign. He's maintained a stellar 1.73 ERA and 51:11 K:BB across 41.2 frames to this point, and he currently lines up to take the mound for his next outing Wednesday against St. Louis.
May 2, 2021
Records quality start
Woodruff (2-0) allowed two runs on six hits while striking out six over six innings in Saturday's win over the Dodgers. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
The righty was sharp Saturday with his only mistakes being a homer by Mookie Betts in the first and a Corey Seager triple in the third to knock in Betts. The 28-year-old threw 65 of his 91 pitches for strikes and now has a 1.80 ERA. Woodruff now has a 40:9 K:BB through 35 frames.
Apr 25, 2021
Fires six shutout innings
Woodruff (2-0) allowed two hits and two walks over six shutout innings Sunday, striking out eight and earning a win over the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff was outstanding Sunday and was never in much danger during the contest. The Cubs got two runners on base to begin the fourth inning but the 6-foot-6 southpaw recorded a pair of strikeouts and eliminated the threat when Ian Happ was caught trying to swipe third. He lowered his season ERA to 1.55 with a 34:8 K:BB through 29 frames. Woodruff will take the mound at home against the Dodgers on Friday.
Apr 20, 2021
Outduels Musgrove for win
Woodruff (1-0) allowed one run on one hit and three walks while striking out seven over six innings as he earned the win over the Padres on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff had a rocky opening frame, as he allowed his only run and hit of the night while also needing 28 pitches to get out of the inning. However, he was nearly untouchable after the first and exited after retiring seven straight hitters following a fourth-inning walk to Wil Myers. It was only a matter of time before Woodruff picked up his first win of the season, as the 28-year-old now owns a 1.96 ERA and 26:6 K:BB through 23 innings pitched so far. He's in line to face the Cubs, a team he's already had much success against, for the third time this season at Wrigley Field on Sunday.
Apr 13, 2021
Another dominant effort
Woodruff allowed one earned run on three hits and one walk while striking out six across six innings Tuesday against the Cubs. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff faced the Cubs for the second consecutive start and combined to allow only one earned run across 13 innings with 14 strikeouts and one walk. However, he didn't earn a victory on either occasion, even though he left Tuesday's game with a lead. After a shaky start on Opening Day, Woodruff has produced as expected but will face a challenge in his next start, which is slated to come Monday at San Diego.
Apr 7, 2021
Excellent in no-decision
Woodruff allowed one hit and struck out eight over seven innings in Wednesday's extra-inning win over the Cubs. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff was fantastic in a pitchers' duel with the Cubs' Kyle Hendricks on Wednesday. Only three runners reached base against Woodruff -- which came via an error, a single and a fielder's choice. The right-hander is still in search of his first win, but he has a strong 2.45 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 13:2 K:BB across 11 innings this season. He's expected to face the Cubs again Tuesday in his next start.
Apr 1, 2021
Gives up three runs Thursday
Woodruff didn't factor into the decision in Thursday's extra-inning win over the Twins. He gave up three runs on six hits and two walks while fanning five across four innings.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff started on Opening Day for the second straight year but wasn't very effective, lasting just four innings despite tossing 50 of his 78 pitches for strikes. He found a way to limit the damage, however, and that bodes well for the 28-year-old right-hander. He's looking to repeat what he did in 2020 when he posted a career-best 3.05 ERA across 13 starts.
Mar 18, 2021
Gets Opening Day nod
Woodruff was named the Brewers' Opening Day starter as expected Thursday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff will square off against Kenta Maeda and the Twins on April 1. He'll be making his second consecutive Opening Day start, becoming the first Brewer to do so since Yovani Gallardo received the honor in five consecutive seasons from 2010 to 2014.
Mar 13, 2021
Goes two scoreless in second start
Woodruff threw two scoreless innings in his second start of the spring Friday. He allowed five hits, struck out one batter and walked none.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff allowed a few too many runners to reach base Friday, but he did keep the ball in the park after allowing two homers in his first spring start. He figures to start two or three more times before the regular season gets underway.
Mar 9, 2021
Up-and-down debut
Woodruff made his spring debut Monday and allowed two earned runs over two innings. He struck out one batter, walked none and served up two home runs.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff's spring debut was delayed until Tuesday due to a back injury, and he was sharp in his first inning, retiring all three batters he faced and punching out Mike Trout. However, he ran into trouble in his second frame, serving up long balls to Anthony Rendon and Justin Upton. The Angels certainly didn't send their B-Team out there Monday, so the long balls shouldn't be cause for concern at this point. Woodruff will have plenty of time to get ready for Opening Day, and barring any setbacks he will almost certainly take the ball that day against the Twins.
Mar 5, 2021
Scheduled to start Monday
Woodruff (back) is scheduled to start Monday's spring game against the Angels, Sophia Minnaert of Fox Sports Wisconsin reports.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old faced pitched against live hitters with no issues Thursday and is poised to make his spring debut Monday. Woodruff was originally scheduled to start last Tuesday, so the back injury ended up pushing back his start to spring action by less than a week.
Mar 4, 2021
Successful throwing session
Woodruff (back) successfully faced hitters Thursday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday due to back stiffness, but his live batting practice session Thursday went as planned. Manager Craig Counsell said that Woodruff's next step will be pitching in a Cactus League game, although it's not yet clear when that will occur. As long as he doesn't experience any setbacks, he should have plenty of time to prepare for Opening Day.
Mar 4, 2021
Facing hitters
Woodruff (back) will face hitters Thursday, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff was scratched from his Tuesday start with back stiffness, though the Brewers said at the time the issue wasn't a big deal. He threw a bullpen session that same day and will now throw live batting practice Thursday, leaving him with plenty of time to get up to speed by Opening Day assuming he avoids setbacks.
Mar 2, 2021
Successful bullpen session
Woodruff's (back) bullpen session went well Tuesday and he should pitch in a game Thursday or Friday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It remains to be seen whether Woodruff will start a Cactus League game later this week or pitch in a camp game. Any pitcher injury early in camp is worth monitoring closely, but so far there doesn't seem to be any concern about Woodruff's availability for the start of the regular season.
Mar 2, 2021
Scheduled to throw Tuesday
Woodruff (back) is slated to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff was initially lined up to make his Cactus League debut Tuesday against the Athletics, but the Brewers scratched him a day in advance of the game after he experienced some back stiffness. Manager Craig Counsell downplayed the injury Monday, and the fact that Woodruff will still be allowed to throw in some capacity Tuesday supports the notion that his back soreness is only a minor concern. If all goes well during the bullpen session, Woodruff could be cleared to pitch in a Cactus League or simulated game this weekend.
Mar 1, 2021
Pushed back due to back stiffness
Woodruff will not make his scheduled start Tuesday after experiencing slight back stiffness, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Craig Counsell said the issue is no big deal, and that Woodruff will be moved back a couple days, according to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. Josh Lindblom will get the start Tuesday instead. Counsell said there was flexibility built into the rotation schedule to account for minor issues like this. While the Brewers are downplaying the situation, fantasy managers should factor in slightly more risk with regards to Woodruff's health entering the season.
Jan 15, 2021
Avoids arbitration with Brewers
Woodruff agreed to a one-year contract with the Brewers on Friday, avoiding arbitration.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff ranked seventh in the majors in innings (73.2) and ninth in K-BB% (24.9) last season, so he is rightfully being treated like an ace in fantasy drafts. He is certainly the Brewers' ace, and the one starting pitcher on the team who can be reliably counted on to log five-plus innings per outing.
Oct 2, 2020
Takes Game 2 loss
Woodruff gave up three earned runs on five hits and zero walks while striking out nine in 4.2 innings Thursday against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
He did not pitch poorly, but he gave up a few singles in the bottom of the fifth inning and Mookie Betts' bases clearing double was the finishing blow. Woodruff cemented his status as a frontline starter this season, finishing 10th in the majors with 91 strikeouts while his 3.05 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 73.2 innings were also top-20 marks among qualified starters.
Sep 29, 2020
Starting Game 2 in LA
Woodruff will start Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Dodgers on Thursday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander delivered eight scoreless innings Saturday against the Cardinals, and he'll remain on schedule and pitch a pivotal Game 2 versus the Dodgers. Woodruff had a strong 2020 season with a 3.05 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 91:18 K:BB across 73.2 innings, and he'll look to carry that level of play into the postseason.
Sep 27, 2020
Strikes out 10 in must-win start
Woodruff (3-5) tossed eight scoreless innings of two-hit baseball Saturday against the Cardinals as he picked up his third win of the season. He walked one batter and struck out 10 in the outing.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff kept the Brewers' playoff hopes alive Saturday with a dominant performance against the division-rival Cardinals. The right-hander came into the game with the fourth-highest fastball velocity in the National League at 96.4 MPH and was blowing pitches by the Cardinal hitters while occasionally topping out the heater at 98. Woodruff lasted eight innings for the first time in 2020 while recording double-digit punchouts for the second time this month. He'll end the regular season with a 3.05 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 91:18 K:BB across 73.2 innings.
Sep 22, 2020
Homer spoils decent outing
Woodruff (2-5) took the loss Monday against the Reds, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks across 5.2 innings. He fanned nine.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff was solid once again, but took a tough-luck loss in his second consecutive outing. He was able to get the first two outs of the sixth after logging five scoreless frames, but a two-run shot by Eugenio Suarez bounced him from the game and left him on the hook for the loss. Despite falling to 2-5, Woodruff has allowed just five runs while fanning 26 across his last 19.2 innings.
Sep 16, 2020
Complete-game effort wasted
Woodruff (2-4) took the loss while tossing a complete game (seven innings) in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Cardinals, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits. He fanned five and did not issue a walk.
ANALYSIS
It was a strong showing for Woodruff, but unfortunately for the right-hander, Adam Wainwright was even better for St. Louis. Woodruff was spotted an early 2-0 lead in the first inning but that would be the only run support the Brewers would give him. The Cardinals belted a pair of solo homers and were able to grind out two more runs (one unearned) to hand the 27-year-old his fourth loss of the season. Despite the loss, Woodruff appears to be trending in a positive direction, allowing just three earned runs across 14 innings during consecutive quality starts. His next start is scheduled to come Tuesday against the Reds.
Sep 12, 2020
Dominates in shutout
Woodruff threw seven shutout innings on Friday, allowing one hit while striking out 12 during the Brewers 1-0 victory over the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
After struggling against the Cubs in their previous matchup, Woodruff bounced back in a pitchers' duel, throwing 71 of his 100 pitches for strikes in the victory. He'll carry a 3.40 ERA into his start against the Cardinals next week.
Sep 5, 2020
Can't work deep
Woodruff allowed three earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out seven across 4.1 innings Saturday against Cleveland. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff got through four scoreless innings with relative ease. However, things quickly took a turn in the fifth frame, as he allowed a walk, double and home run consecutively before being pulled from the contest. Positively, Woodruff continued to rack up strikeouts, and he now has 22 punchouts across his last 15.1 frames. He'll look to work deeper into his next start, currently projected to come Friday against the Cubs.
Sep 2, 2020
Returning Saturday
Woodruff (personal) is slated to return from the paternity list to start Saturday's game against the Indians, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Assuming Woodruff experiences no complications with the COVID-19 intake testing protocol upon joining the Brewers in Cleveland, he'll be able to stay on turn in the rotation. He left the team to witness the birth of his child immediately after completing his start against the Pirates this past weekend.
Aug 31, 2020
Lands on paternity list
Woodruff was placed on the paternity list Monday.
ANALYSIS
He must miss the next team game, but no more than three games, so Woodruff will be activated prior to his next scheduled start this weekend against Cleveland.
Aug 30, 2020
Bit by long ball, takes loss
Woodruff (2-3) took the loss Sunday against the Pirates, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks across five innings pitched. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff allowed a solo homer to Gregory Polanco in the first and was later taken deep by Josh Bell for a two-run shot in the fourth. Although he was able to punch out seven, the right-hander will certainly be unhappy with yielding three free passes. The 27-year-old will take a 3.67 ERA into his start against the Indians next Sunday.
Aug 25, 2020
Evens record with win
Woodruff (2-2) allowed two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out eight over six innings in a win over the Reds on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
After looking unhittable the first time through the order, Woodruff ran into trouble in the fourth and fifth innings. He loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth, but escaped that inning completely unscathed, limiting the total damage to just two earned runs. Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel noted earlier this week that Woodruff's wife is pregnant and will be induced Sept. 1; Woodruff plans to pitch Sunday against the Pirates before returning home to Mississippi on Monday. He said he will hopefully return in time for his next start after the birth of his child.
Aug 21, 2020
Takes loss Thursday
Woodruff (1-2) was tagged with the loss in Thursday's loss to Minnesota, throwing five innings and allowing two runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff retired the first six batters he faced but ran into trouble in the third inning when a triple and a single accounted for the first run against him. He gave up six more hits between the fourth and fifth frames but managed to escape without yielding any additional run thanks to an outfield assist and a double play. The right-hander came back out for the sixth but was pulled after allowing the first two runners to reach base, one of which eventually came around to score. Collectively, Woodruff allowed a season high in hits (nine) while tallying a season-low three strikeouts and failing to get through six innings for the third straight start. He'll look to rebound in a home appearance against Cincinnati on Tuesday.
Aug 15, 2020
Escapes with no-decision
Woodruff didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 4-3 win over the Cubs, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander tossed four scoreless innings but got tagged in the fifth, and Woodruff exited the game in line for a loss before Christian Yelich bailed him out with a three-run blast in the sixth. Woodruff threw 86 pitches (59 strikes), and his inefficiency continues to limit his ability to record wins despite a strong 3.16 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 30:7 K:BB through 25.2 innings over five starts. He'll next take the mound Wednesday in Minnesota.
Aug 9, 2020
Only gets through four Sunday
Woodruff allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out five over four innings in a no-decision against the Reds on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The Reds made Woodruff work; he needed 30 pitches to get through the first inning and 91 pitches to get through four. He has a sparkling 26:5 K:BB in 20.1 innings this season, so his believers are looking pretty smart early on even though Woodruff still sits with just one win through four starts. Up next is a road matchup against the Cubs, who stuck Woodruff with the loss Opening Day.
Aug 5, 2020
No-decision in quality start
Woodruff didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the White Sox, allowing two runs on eight hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander was in control through five innings, but Eloy Jimenez rocked him for a game-tying homer in the sixth. Woodruff continues to sparkle to begin 2020, and his 1-1 record doesn't reflect his 2.08 ERA or 21:3 K:BB through 17.1 innings. He'll look to get back in the win column Sunday in a home start against the Reds.
Jul 30, 2020
Dominates Pirates
Woodruff struck out 10 batters over 6.1 scoreless innings in Wednesday's victory over the Pirates. He allowed just one hit and walked only one batter in the contest.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff was absolutely dominant Wednesday, ceding only an infield single in the first inning and allowing just one batted ball to even reach the outfield. He served up a two-run homer to the Cubs' Ian Happ on Opening Day but has otherwise kept the opponent off the scoreboard over his first two starts of the season.
Jul 25, 2020
Takes loss in opener
Woodruff (0-1) allowed two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out five over five innings in a loss to the Cubs on Opening day.
ANALYSIS
This was by no means a bad performance, though Woodruff did only induce seven swinging strikes on 85 pitches. His offense provided him no support. Hopefully the Milwaukee bats will wake up by the time Woodruff's next turn comes around Wednesday in Pittsburgh, as that would seem like a prime spot for a win.
Jul 17, 2020
Named Opening Day starter
Woodruff was named the Brewers' Opening Day starter Friday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff will get the nod on July 24 against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. It's no surprise to see him earn the honor, as he's clearly the Brewers' top starter, having cruised to a 3.62 ERA and a 29.0 percent strikeout rate last season.
Jul 6, 2020
Stuff looks sharp
Woodruff's stuff was "very, very sharp command-wise, plus velocity was really, really good" in Saturday's live batting practice session, according to pitching coach Chris Hook, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
One of four Brewers starters assured a rotation spot, Woodruff is the staff ace and didn't look rusty in his first action against live hitters. He is a strong candidate to be the team's Opening Day starter.
Mar 11, 2020
Goes four strong
Woodruff allowed one earned run over four innings in Tuesday's spring game against the Royals. He gave up two hits and posted a 5:2 K:BB in the outing.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff has steadily built up his stamina this spring and has had good results, posting a 1.80 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 8:3 K:BB over 10 innings. That strikeout rate is a bit lower than what he is capable of, but he has been working on some pitches this spring, and he did have his best day in that department Tuesday. The Brewers have not yet named an Opening Day starter, but Woodruff is the favorite to get the nod.
Feb 28, 2020
Throws two innings
Woodruff started Friday's spring game against the Dodgers and allowed one earned run over two innings. He gave up four hits and struck out two batters in his outing.
ANALYSIS
Woodruff was not particularly sharp Friday, but he was still effective against a Dodgers lineup consisting mostly of MLB regulars. Woodruff will build up his pitch count over the rest of the spring and is the favorite to start Opening Day for the Brewers.
