Picks up 24th save
Holmes picked up the save Saturday against Kansas City, striking out two in a perfect ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
The 30-year-old made quick work of the Royals, striking out two and inducing a weak groundout by Bobby Witt to end the contest. After a rough patch to end August, Holmes was dominant in September, posting a microscopic 0.75 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB across 12 innings while converting all eight of his save opportunities.

Notches 23rd save
Holmes picked up the save in Tuesday's 2-0 victory over the Blue Jays. He allowed one hit and no walks with no strikeouts in a scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
Holmes handled business in the ninth inning, taking 19 pitches to lock down the win and push his career-high in saves up to 23. The 30-year-old righty has been superb over his last 12 appearances, tossing 12 innings to the tune of a 0.75 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 11:5 K:BB. Holmes has pitched to a 2.90 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 69:23 K:BB overall this year.

Pounds strike zone during 22nd save
Holmes earned a save against the Diamondbacks on Monday, striking out two batters in a perfect inning.
ANALYSIS
Holmes threw 13 of his 15 pitches for a strike in the outing, retiring all three batters he faced to preserve a two-run advantage. The right-hander has converted all six of his save chances in September, giving up only one earned run over 10 innings. That's a marked improvement over August, when Holmes posted a 7.84 ERA and 1.84 WHIP across 10.1 frames. Overall, he's converted 22 of 25 save opportunities while registering a 2.95 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 69:23 K:B across 61 innings.

Nabs another save
Holmes pitched one perfect inning to secure a save during Saturday's 6-3 win over the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
After firing off a perfect ninth frame Friday night for his 20th save of 2023, Holmes delivered another clean inning Saturday for save No. 21, setting a career-high in the category and besting his 2022 total. The 30-year-old has yet to allow a run in September and has locked up five saves over eight appearances.
Sep 16, 2023
Reaches 20 saves
Holmes struck out one batter in a perfect ninth inning to pick up a save against Pittsburgh on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Holmes entered with the Yankees holding a two-run lead and needed just 10 pitches to retire the side in order. The right-hander hasn't allowed a run in any of his past eight appearances, posting an 8:3 K:BB and racking up four saves during that stretch. Holmes' save Friday was his 20th of the campaign, tying the amount he had last season in his first season as a closer.
Sep 13, 2023
Shaky in 19th save
Holmes walked three batters in a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday to record his 19th save of the season in the first game of a doubleheader against the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander lost the plate after getting Wilyer Abreu to ground out to begin the inning, issuing three straight free passes, but a double-play grounder on his first pitch to Alex Verdugo bailed Holmes out. After going most of August without a save and posting a 7.84 ERA on the month, the right-hander is 3-for-3 on save chances in September and has yet to allow a run. Tuesday's outing was also the first time he'd walked multiple batters in an appearance since May 28, so there may not be much cause for concern with his sudden control issues.
Sep 7, 2023
Breezes to 18th save
Holmes earned a save against the Tigers on Wednesday, striking out one batter in a perfect inning.
ANALYSIS
Holmes had a narrow one-run lead to work with when he entered in the ninth frame, but he got the job done with little stress, needing just nine pitches to set the side down in order. Following a rough stretch from mid-to-late-August during which he allowed nine earned runs over 5.1 innings across six outings, Holmes has rebounded with five straight scoreless appearances, picking up two saves and recording a 5:0 K:BB across five frames during that span. Holmes needs two more saves to reach 20 for the second straight campaign.
Sep 3, 2023
Notches 17th save
Holmes gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Saturday to record his 17th save of the season in a 5-4 win over the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Despite a rough stretch in August that saw Holmes get tagged for nine earned runs in 5.1 innings over six appearances, the right-hander hasn't actually blown a save chance since July 16, converting six straight -- although Saturday's save was his first in nearly a month. On the season, he sports a 3.29 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 61:19 K:BB through 52 frames, adding four wins and five holds to his save total.
Aug 14, 2023
Implodes in non-save situation
Holmes (4-3) took the loss against the Marlins on Sunday, allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits and one walk while striking out one batter in one-third of an inning.
ANALYSIS
Holmes had been on a post-All-Star-break tear coming into Sunday, collecting eight saves in nine chances and allowing just two runs while posting an 18:3 K:BB over 15.2 frames. Yankees manager Aaron Boone thus turned to him in the ninth inning while holding a four-run lead, but things didn't go as planned. Holmes allowed a single, double, triple and walk in the frame and also contributed to his own demise with a throwing error. Luis Arraez's two-run three-bagger tied the score and resulted in Holmes getting the hook, and the righty hurler took the loss when Arraez crossed the plate after his departure. Holmes should still have a firm grasp on the closer role considering his recent run of success, but Sunday's blowup increased his season ERA from 2.01 to 2.80.
Aug 5, 2023
Nabs 16th save
Holmes picked up the save in Saturday's win over the Astros, striking out one over a scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
Holmes entered the game with a two-run lead in the ninth and got Jeremy Pena to go down swinging in the first at-bat en route to a 1-2-3 inning. The right-hander has now converted each of his last five save attempts, posting six strikeouts to only one walk over that stretch. He's also allowed just one run since June 23, lowering his season ERA to 2.06.
Aug 4, 2023
Locks down 15th save
Holmes picked up the save Thursday against the Astros, working around two hits in a scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
The Astros got the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the ninth inning before Holmes got Jose Altuve to ground out to close out the one-run victory. The 30-year-old Holmes has converted his last five save chances, striking out five over five scoreless innings in that span. Overall, he's 15-for-18 in save opportunities this season with an impressive 2.11 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 52:16 K:BB across 42.2 innings this season.
Jul 27, 2023
Registers 14th save
Holmes earned a save against the Mets on Wednesday, striking out one batter in a perfect inning.
ANALYSIS
Holmes had no problem protecting a two-run ninth-inning Yankees lead, throwing 11 of his 14 pitches for a strike and retiring all three batters he faced. The right-hander continues to pitch well after a shaky start to the campaign, holding the opponent scoreless in 28 of his past 31 outings. Over that span, he's posted a minuscule 0.88 ERA and 0.95 WHIP while notching a 38:11 K:BB and recording 10 saves in 11 chances across 30.2 frames.
Jul 22, 2023
Nabs 13th save
Holmes picked up the save Saturday against the Royals, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two over a scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
Holmes entered the game with a three-run lead in the ninth and got MJ Melendez to go down on strikes in the first at-bat, followed by a groundout by Michael Massey. The right-handed reliever would then allow the next two batters to reach before finally shutting the door on the Royals with a strikeout to end the game, earning his 13th save in the process. Holmes has now converted his last two save attempts and lowered his season ERA to 2.27 with Saturday's scoreless appearance.
Jul 21, 2023
Earns save Friday
Holmes tossed a scoreless ninth inning to notch his 12th save of the year Friday versus the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Holmes gave up a leadoff single to Drew Waters in the top of the ninth, but he promptly retried Kyle Isbel, Maikel Garcia and Bobby Witt to secure a 5-4 victory for the Yankees. It was a nice bounceback effort from the 30-year-old right-hander, who blew a save last time out against the Rockies. His season ERA is down to 2.33.
Jul 17, 2023
Charged with blown save
Holmes allowed a run on two hits in one-third of an inning, taking a blown save Sunday versus the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Holmes was in a tight situation with the bases loaded and two outs following a tough outing from Tommy Kahnle. C.J. Cron hit a grand slam off Holmes in the eighth inning, handing the Yankees' top reliever his third blown save of the season. He's now at a 2.39 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 47:15 K:BB while going 11-for-14 in save chances and adding five holds over 37.2 innings in a general high-leverage role.
Jul 15, 2023
Secures 11th save
Holmes allowed a hit in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Holmes had limited opponents to two walks over his last five outings (4.2 innings). While his hitless stretch ended, he turned in another scoreless effort. Holmes has been scored on in just six of his 39 appearances, pitching to a strong 2.17 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 47:15 K:BB over 37.1 innings. He's added 11 saves, five holds, two blown saves and a 4-2 record while serving as one of the Yankees' top high-leverage relievers.
Jul 4, 2023
Snags 10th save
Holmes earned a save against the Orioles on Monday, striking out two batters in a perfect inning.
ANALYSIS
Holmes came on in the ninth frame with New York holding a three-run lead and retired all three batters he faced on 14 pitches to pick up his first save since June 20. Though three other Yankees relievers notched a save between then and Monday, Holmes remains the most likely source of ninth-inning opportunities for the team. He had some shaky outings early in the campaign but has posted an outstanding 0.74 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 31:9 K:BB over 24.1 innings since May 6.
Jun 25, 2023
Collects fifth hold
Holmes struck out one while recording two outs to pick up his fifth hold of the season in Saturday's 1-0 win over the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Wandy Peralta gave up two singles to lead off the eighth inning, forcing manager Aaron Boone to turn to his closer early to shut down the rally. Holmes did make things dicey, pushing a runner to third base with a wild pitch, but he struck out Josh Jung to end the frame. The right-hander has returned to form in June with a 1.00 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 10:3 K:BB through nine innings, but Boone's willingness to deploy Holmes in highest-leverage spots outside the ninth will likely continue to cost him save chances -- through his nine appearances this month, he has four saves, two holds and one win.
Jun 21, 2023
Records five out save
Holmes did not allow a hit and struck out two over 1.2 scoreless frames to pick up the save over the Mariners on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Holmes took the ball from Gerritt Cole after Cole got the first out in the eighth and shut the Mariners down without issue. He picked up his fifth save this month though Tuesday was his first appearance since June 13. Holmes has now pitched 8.2 scoreless frames dating back to May 31 and has struck out multiple hitters in five of eight appearances since then. The 30-year-old owns a 2.35 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 38:13 K:BB across 30.2 innings on the year.
Jun 10, 2023
Collects eighth save
Holmes allowed a hit and struck out two in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Holmes gave up his first hit in four outings in June, and he's up to three saves and a win this month. He's given up just one run over his last 17.1 innings. The right-hander is up to eight saves in 10 chances while adding three holds with a 2.63 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 34:13 K:BB through 27.1 innings this season. Holmes remains the Yankees' top high-leverage reliever, even if that ends up costing him some save chances.
Jun 9, 2023
Notches seventh save
Holmes earned a save over the White Sox in Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader, allowing one walk in a scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
Holmes was tasked with preserving the Yankees' combined shutout and succeeded in doing so despite issuing a leadoff walk. The righty reliever has allowed just one run over 16.1 frames across his past 16 appearances, posting a 20:8 K:BB over that span. The strong stretch has helped him reclaim the primary closer role for New York -- he's earned three of the team's last four saves after going without any saves between April 12 and May 20.
Jun 4, 2023
Collects fourth win
Holmes (4-2) allowed a walk in a scoreless inning against the Dodgers on Sunday. He struck out two and earned a win.
ANALYSIS
Holmes entered the game in the seventh inning and picked up the win when the Yankees took the lead in the eighth. He's seen just two save chances over his last 16 appearances, though he's compiled a terrific 1.15 ERA during that span. For the season, his ERA is down to 2.84 with a 32:12 K:BB and six saves through 25.1 innings.
Jun 4, 2023
Logs sixth save
Holmes earned a save over the Dodgers on Saturday with a scoreless inning during which he allowed one walk.
ANALYSIS
Holmes was tasked with protecting a three-run ninth-inning lead and did so successfully despite issuing a two-out walk. He picked up his first save since May 21, though he pitched well over four contests in the interim, allowing one run on one hit while posting a 5:2 K:BB across four innings. Manager Aaron Boone has mixed and matched closers this season -- seven different relievers have earned a save thus far -- but Holmes has each of the team's past two conversions and leads New York with six saves overall, so he's probably the safest bet for ninth-inning opportunities moving forward.
May 21, 2023
Earns fifth save
Holmes picked up the save in Sunday's 4-1 victory over the Reds, working around two hits and a walk in a scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
The Reds loaded the bases against Holmes in the ninth, but the right-hander coaxed a groundout from Will Benson to grab his fifth save -- his first since April 12. Holmes hasn't allowed a run in his last nine outings (9.1 innings), lowering his ERA to 3.26 with a 1.45 WHIP and 25:8. K:BB through 19.1 innings this season. Holmes has certainly worked his way back into the ninth-inning picture with his recent performance. However, he'll likely continue splitting closing duties with Wandy Peralta and Michael King.
May 21, 2023
Nabs win Saturday
Holmes (2-2) earned the win over the Reds on Saturday, walking one batter and striking out one in a scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
Holmes handled the bottom of the ninth for New York with the score tied 3-3 and held Cincinnati at bay to send the game to an extra frame. The right-hander has now pitched in a non-save situation in each of his past nine outings, compiling a 1.04 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 12:2 K:BB over 8.2 innings while notching two wins and three holds. While those are excellent numbers, Holmes' fantasy value in formats that don't count holds will be minimal unless he's able to work his way up to closing games again.
May 13, 2023
Deployed in eighth inning again
Holmes (1-2) earned the win over Tampa Bay on Friday, allowing one hit and no runs over two-thirds of an inning. He struck out one batter.
ANALYSIS
The Yankees carried a two-run lead into the eighth frame, but Michael King served up a three-run homer to Josh Lowe to cough up the advantage. With one out and one on, Holmes was summoned to try to prevent additional damage, and he was able to do so despite giving up a single to the first batter he faced. New York then took the lead back on a two-run shot by Anthony Rizzo in the bottom of the frame, lining Holmes up for his first victory of the campaign. Meanwhile, Wandy Peralta closed things out with a scoreless ninth to record his first save of the season. This was the fifth straight outing for Holmes in which he was used in a non-save situation, though he continues to see mostly high-leverage work and has allowed just one run while posting a 6:1 K:BB over four innings during that span. He may still be the most likely option for save chances in what has become an unsettled New York bullpen, but with his last save coming April 12 and four different Yankees relievers nabbing at least one save in the interim,
May 7, 2023
Gets eighth inning Saturday
Holmes earned a hold against Tampa Bay on Saturday, allowing one hit in an inning of work.
ANALYSIS
After New York rallied to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning, manager Aaron Boone turned to Holmes to face the heart of the Rays' order in the bottom of the frame. He gave up a leadoff single that was quickly erased on a double play and needed just seven pitches overall to get through the scoreless inning. However, rather than being kept in the game to go for a multi-inning save, Holmes was relieved by Ian Hamilton, who closed things out for his first career save. There was no changing of the guard here -- if anything, it was a testament to Boone's faith in Holmes that he brought him in to face the toughest part of Tampa's lineup -- but the outing was a reminder that Holmes won't always work the ninth inning. He had been struggling of late, so a positive spin is that the effective performance against MLB's top team could help the closer regain any diminished confidence.
May 4, 2023
Struggles again Wednesday
Holmes allowed a run on two hits in one-third of an inning against Cleveland on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Two days after Holmes was given a verbal vote of confidence from manager Aaron Boone, the right-hander was called upon to preserve a 2-2 tie with two outs and the bases empty in the top of the ninth. He couldn't come through, allowing a Myles Straw double and an Oscar Gonzalez single that pushed the go-ahead run across the plate for the Guardians. Holmes did manage to record the final out of the frame, and he was bailed out of a loss when the Yankees tied the score in the bottom of the ninth. Still, this was a discouraging outing for the closer, who has blown two saves and taken two losses while allowing five runs (three earned) across 4.1 frames over his past six appearances.
May 2, 2023
Receives vote of confidence
Yankees manager Aaron Boone gave Holmes a vote of confidence Monday, saying the closer is "in a good spot" and can "get through this," Max Goodman of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
Holmes suffered his second blown save Monday versus the Guardians and now has a 3.72 ERA on the season. It sounds like he will still be Boone's primary option to close for the time being, though. Even with this vote of confidence for Holmes, Michael King makes for a good roster stash.
May 2, 2023
Blows save in loss
Holmes (0-2) blew the save and took the loss during Monday's 3-2 loss to the Guardians, allowing two runs on two hits and zero walks while failing to record an out.
ANALYSIS
Domingo German took a shutout into the ninth inning, but after a one-out single, he was pulled with 88 pitches. Holmes was called on to replace the starter, but he allowed the first batter to reach on a fielding error and surrendered back-to-back singles to tie the game at 2-2. After securing his first four save opportunities this season, he's blown back-to-back chances, so the Yankees might start looking elsewhere for potential closing options, with Michael King being the most likely candidate.
Apr 14, 2023
Comes in early, blows save
Holmes (0-1) came in for the eighth inning Friday with the top of the lineup due up for the Twins and gave up two earned runs on two hits and one walk with zero strikeouts. He took the loss and blown save.
ANALYSIS
Michael King was unavailable so the Yankees called on their closer with Byron Buxton and Carlos Correa due up in the eighth inning and a 3-2 lead to protect. Holmes said after the game that he knew he might be called upon earlier than usual Friday and took responsibility for the blown lead. He should still have a good hold on the closer role.
Apr 12, 2023
Picks up fourth save
Holmes collected his fourth save of the season Wednesday against the Guardians, allowing zero hits and two walks over one scoreless inning with a strikeout.
ANALYSIS
After getting hit around in his first appearance of the season against the Giants on April 1, Holmes has now responded by throwing five consecutive shutout innings while earning a save in each of his last four appearances. It's a promising return to form for the 30-year-old closer, who boasts a 2.34 ERA since joining the Yankees in 2021.
Apr 10, 2023
Adds another save
Holmes earned a save against Baltimore on Sunday, striking out one batter in a perfect inning of work.
ANALYSIS
Holmes got the call with the Yankees up two runs heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, and the right-hander made quick work of three Orioles batters, needing just nine pitches (eight of which were strikes) to retire the side in order. After a rough first appearance this season during which he allowed two runs over two-thirds of an inning, Holmes has settled in with four consecutive scoreless appearances during which he has allowed just one hit and posted a 7:1 K:BB over four frames. Though manager Aaron Boone suggested during spring camp that he could envision "a number of guys" closing games for the team this year, Holmes has thus far earned all three of the Yankees' saves.
Apr 9, 2023
Nails down second save
Holmes walked one and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Saturday to record his second save of the season in a 4-1 win over the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
He also uncorked a wild pitch and threw only seven of 14 pitches for strikes, but Holmes was able to get the job done. The right-hander is 2-for-2 in save chances to begin the season, and his 6:1 K:BB through 3.2 innings is a strong sign he's ready to build on last year's breakout campaign.
Apr 6, 2023
Earns first save
Holmes earned a save against the Phillies on Wednesday, striking out three batters in a scoreless ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
Holmes continues to improve from his rough season debut. The 30-year-old earned his first save of the season and threw nine of his 16 pitches for strikes punching out all three batters he faced. Holmes has provided impressive performances in consecutive outings and will continue to serve as the go-to option in the Yankees bullpen for save situations.
Apr 2, 2023
Struggles in first outing of 2023
Holmes tossed two-thirds of an inning against San Francisco on Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits. He did not walk or strike out any batters.
ANALYSIS
Holmes is expected to get most of the save opportunities for the Yankees this season, but his first appearance of the campaign came with New York trailing by a run in the top of the ninth inning. The right-hander was unable to maintain the narrow deficit, as he allowed two runs to cross the plate while registering just two outs. It's unlikely that the poor debut will push Holmes out of the primary closer role, but it's also worth noting that he hadn't saved any games in four seasons prior to last year and struggled in the second half of last season, so he may not have a long leash if he struggles early in the campaign.
Feb 24, 2023
May pitch outside of ninth inning
Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated over the weekend that Holmes may sometimes be used outside of save situations during the regular season, Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports. "There are going to be days where if it's [George] Springer, [Bo] Bichette and Vladdy [Vladimir Guerrero Jr.] coming up in the eighth inning in a big spot, that might be Clay," Boone explained.
ANALYSIS
Boone suggested that he plans to deploy Holmes in the highest leverage situations, which could come earlier than the ninth inning at times and may not always qualify the right-handed hurler for a save. Still, the manager hinted that he would continue to see plenty of chances to close, stating, "I would expect [Holmes] to close a lot of games for us. Probably most games, and hopefully a lot of games. But I do see a number of guys getting saves." Holmes didn't earn any saves in his first four big-league seasons, but he racked up 20 last year after taking over the ninth-inning role in the first half of the campaign. The reliever's stock is boosted by playing for a team projected to be among the best in the league, but Boone's comments and Holmes' late-season fade last year provide enough risk to keep him outside of the top 10 closers in fantasy drafts.
Jan 14, 2023
Reaches one-year deal
Holmes agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Yankees on Friday, avoiding arbitration.
ANALYSIS
Holmes broke out in his age-29 season last year, finishing the season with a 2.54 ERA and 1.02 WHIP while recording the first 20 saves of his career. He's the clear favorite to lead the Yankees in saves this season, though the fact that his ERA jumped from 1.31 prior to the break to 4.84 in the second half makes him a higher-risk option than one might expect when looking at only his season-long numbers.
Oct 11, 2022
Officially available for Game 1
Manager Aaron Boone said Holmes (shoulder) is available to close Game 1 of the ALDS against the Guardians on Tuesday, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Holmes has been held out of action since the end of September with a strained right shoulder. After his recent throwing sessions went "really well" according to Boone, Holmes is now cleared for postseason action. 2022 marked a career year for the 29-year-old righty as he recorded a 2.54 ERA and 1.02 WHIP over 63.2 innings during the regular season.
Oct 9, 2022
Expects to be on ALDS roster
Holmes (shoulder) is scheduled to face a few batters Monday and expects to be named to the ALDS roster, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Holmes suffered a right shoulder strain at the end of September and hasn't pitched in a game since Sept. 26, but the reliever is confident his name will be on the roster for the upcoming ALDS against Cleveland, which begins Tuesday. Holmes noted that he was able to throw "free and easy" in his last bullpen session, and also that his velocity looked good, but he's unsure of his availability for Game 1, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. His status figures to depend on how he feels during Monday's session.
Oct 1, 2022
Won't be placed on injured list
Holmes (shoulder) won't be placed on the injured list since he would then be out for the ALDS, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Holmes has been sidelined with a right shoulder strain and is five days into a planned 10-day shutdown from throwing. However, manager Aaron Boone said Saturday that he hopes Holmes will be able to build back up in time to pitch in the ALDS, which begins Oct. 11.
Sep 30, 2022
Out with shoulder strain
Holmes is out with a right shoulder strain and the Yankees hope to have him ready for the ALDS, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
A recent MRI confirmed the strain and Holmes also had a cortisone shot. Candidates to get the ball in the Yankees' next save opportunity include Scott Effross, Lou Trivino and Aroldis Chapman. It's possible Holmes won't pitch again until 2023.
Sep 23, 2022
Nabs win Thursday
Holmes (7-4) earned the win over Boston on Thursday, allowing one hit and striking out one batter over two innings.
ANALYSIS
Though it wasn't a save situation, Holmes' outing Thursday was a positive step after he allowed a run in four of his previous five appearances. The right-hander preserved a 4-4 tie by keeping Boston off the scoreboard in the ninth inning and worked around the automatic runner in the 10th to again prevent a run. He was credited with the win after the Yankees walked it off in the bottom of the frame. Holmes isn't guaranteed to get all of New York's save chances moving forward with manager Aaron Boone recently indicating he may shift to a committee approach, though Holmes figures to still be in the mix in that scenario.
Sep 21, 2022
Boone taking committee approach
Holmes has given up runs in five of his past six outings, and manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday the Yankees will take a committee approach "on a matchup basis" going forward for the bullpen, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Holmes allowed only one run over his first six innings after he returned from the injured list in late August, but the right-hander is now scuffling once again and has lost his grip on the closer role. The 29-year-old still has a 2.55 ERA for the season, though he's allowed 12 earned runs in 19 outings since the All-Star break. Boone didn't specify his preferred option for save chances, but lefties Aroldis Chapman and Wandy Peralta could now be in the mix, as well as Scott Effross (shoulder), who will be activated from the injured list Thursday.
Sep 17, 2022
Gives up game-winning run
Holmes (6-4) gave up one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out one over 0.2 innings to take the loss in a 7-6 defeat against the Brewers on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Holmes came into a tie-game in the bottom of the ninth and promptly gave up a leadoff double to Hunter Renfroe. The baserunner would eventually come around to score and give the Brewers the walk-off victory on a bases-loaded single by the number nine hitter, Garrett Mitchell. Holmes had converted his last three save opportunities coming into the game but has an ERA of 4.50 in seven September appearances.
Sep 15, 2022
Picks up 20th save
Holmes picked up the save in Wednesday's 5-3 victory over the Red Sox. He allowed one run on one hit while striking out one over one inning.
ANALYSIS
Holmes surrendered a double to Abraham Almonte who later scored on a groundout from Enrique Hernandez. In his last 11 appearances, the righty's 3.86 ERA over 11.2 innings has been higher than he's grown accustomed to this season. The 29-year-old will likely see a decrease in high-leverage opportunities with the expected return of lefty reliever Aroldis Chapman (leg) on Friday.
Sep 14, 2022
Earns extra-inning win
Holmes (6-3) earned the win in Tuesday's 7-6 extra-inning victory over Boston. He allowed two runs on no hits and no walks while striking out one over 1.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Holmes entered the game with the score tied 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth and recorded a clean inning to send it to extras, but he ran into trouble in the 10th after the Yankees took a 7-4 lead. He was pulled after hitting Reese McGuire with one out. Wandy Peralta relieved him and allowed a base hit and a wild pitch to score the ghost runner and McGuire to make it a 7-6 game. Peralta worked out of it, however, and earned Holmes his sixth win of the season. Holmes has been shaky of late as he has allowed 11 runs (nine earned) in 12.1 innings dating back to July 31.

Notches 19th save
Holmes earned a save against the Twins on Monday, striking out two batters in a perfect ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
Holmes needed only 11 pitches -- seven of which were strikes -- to set Minnesota down in order. The save was his second in as many days and his 19th overall this season. Since his Aug. 29 return from a stint on the injured list, Holmes has surrendered only one run while posting a 6:0 K:BB over four innings.

Records save in shaky outing
Holmes picked up the save in Sunday's 2-1 win over Tampa Bay. He allowed one run to score on three hits and struck out one over one inning.
ANALYSIS
In his first appearance in three games, Holmes almost blew the game as he allowed a leadoff double and a single to bring the game within one. He then surrendered another double to put the tying run at third and the winning run at second but got the next batter to strike out looking to end the game and earn his 18th save. Holmes has not been at his best recently as he has now allowed runs to score in five of his last eight appearances, including three blown saves.
Aug 30, 2022
Works seventh inning in return
Holmes struck out one batter in a perfect inning in Monday's loss to the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Holmes was activated from the injured list early Monday, and he was brought in with a runner on first base in the seventh inning with the Yankees down by two runs. The righty reliever was sharp, throwing six of seven pitches for strikes and notching one punchout. Holmes had been struggling in a closing role prior to hitting the IL, but he could reclaim that role quickly if he shows that he's back to form.
Aug 29, 2022
Officially activated
The Yankees reinstated Holmes (back) from the 15-day injured list Monday.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Holmes is ready to rejoin the Yankees for the start of a six-game week following a minimum-length stay on the shelf while he contended with a left lower back spasm. With 17 saves to go with a 2.39 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 49 appearances this season, Holmes has been one of baseball's top late-inning relievers on the whole, but he was on shaky ground as the Yankees' closer prior to getting shut down with the injury, as he blew his last three save chances while yielding runs in four of his most recent five appearances. Though the Yankees might prefer to ease Holmes back into action coming off the injury, the team could immediately reinstall him as closer with Aroldis Chapman (leg) recently joining Scott Effross (shoulder) on the shelf. Lou Trivino now looks like the top threat to poach saves from Holmes, though it's possible manager Aaron Boone opts for a closer committee in the short term until one reliever emerges as the most-trusted option.
Aug 29, 2022
Activated from IL
Holmes (back) was activated from the 15-day injured list Monday, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Holmes will return to the Yankees' bullpen after missing the minimum 15 days while on the IL. The right-hander will likely be eased back into action, but he could end up back in high-leverage situations in the near future. With Aroldis Chapman (leg) on the the 15-day IL, Holmes has the inside track to be New York's primary closer down the stretch.
Aug 28, 2022
Logs live batting-practice session
Holmes (back) threw live batting practice Friday, per MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
This is another step toward a minimum stay on the IL for Holmes, who had previously played catch and tossed from a mound. The right-hander is eligible to be activated Monday and could very well return to the active roster on that day. Manager Aaron Boone was pleased with Holmes' live session, stating, "Today, it was just a live BP, but stuff-wise, it was there, velocity was there, movement quality was there, and he was strike-throwing."
Aug 25, 2022
Remains on track for quick return
Holmes (back) remains on track to return from the injured list Aug. 29, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Holmes has played catch and thrown a bullpen session in recent days, and he reportedly is still feeling well. That puts him in line to return after a minimum stint on the injured list. Holmes' role upon his return is not clear as he allowed seven earned runs across his last four innings prior to going down, though he could be a source of saves.
Aug 22, 2022
Throws bullpen session
Holmes (back) threw approximately 15 pitches during a bullpen session Sunday, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Holmes threw off flat ground Saturday and was cleared to begin mound work a day later. The right-hander won't throw Monday but is expected to toss another bullpen session Tuesday. Holmes has been on the injured list for less than a week, and it's possible that he'll rejoin the Yankees after missing the minimum of 15 days.
Aug 20, 2022
Plays catch
Holmes (back) played catch Saturday for the first time since he hit the injured list, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Holmes landed on the injured list Wednesday due to back spasms, but he's already able to throw again just three days later. That suggests his absence may not stretch much past the minimum 15 days, something the Yankees suggested was a possibility when he first hit the injured list.
Aug 17, 2022
Move to IL confirmed
Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed Wednesday that Holmes (back) has been placed on the 15-day injured list, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Boone hinted a day earlier that Holmes' ongoing bout with back spasms would likely result in a stint on the IL, though the skipper noted that he's hopeful the 29-year-old misses the minimum 15 days, per Feinsand. Even if Holmes needs only a minimum-length IL stay, he may not reclaim the closer's gig when healthy, given his recent struggles of late in addition to Aroldis Chapman's long track record at the back end of the bullpen. It was Chapman's stint on the IL earlier in the season that allowed Holmes to take the closer's job and run with it, but Chapman has since returned to top form after a few turbulent appearances following his activation from the IL in early July. Over his last nine outings, Chapman has allowed five baserunners and has struck out 10 over 9.1 scoreless innings. The Yankees likely won't have much hesitation about reinstalling Chapman in the ninth-inning role while Holmes is on the shelf.
Aug 16, 2022
Likely moving to injured list
Holmes said Tuesday he's been dealing with back spasms for the past couple days, and he may require a stint on the injured list, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander first had the issue crop over the weekend, and he experienced it again when throwing off a mound Tuesday. Holmes is set to rest and receive treatment, which is an indication he may require a stint on the 15-day IL. The 29-year-old's grip on the closer role was already slipping since he has surrendered seven runs and has three blown saves over his past five outings, and it now appears he'll be out for a couple weeks. Aroldis Chapman hasn't been scored upon in his past nine outings and is likely to reclaim ninth-inning duties if Holmes is out.
Aug 6, 2022
Takes second straight blown save
Holmes (5-3) allowed two runs on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in one innings, taking a blown save and the loss Friday versus the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Holmes was tasked with protecting a one-run lead in the eighth inning, but he allowed a two-run double to Paul DeJong. The Yankees couldn't even the score, leaving Holmes with his second loss and second blown save in as many appearances. Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reported after the game that manager Aaron Boone said Aroldis Chapman would have received a save chance had Holmes held the lead. With Holmes' form slipping, his time as the Yankees' closer could be drawing to a close. The right-hander has a 2.12 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 50:14 K:BB while going 17-for-21 in save chances across 46.2 innings this season.
Jul 31, 2022
Blows save, loses
Holmes (5-2) picked up the loss after blowing a save in an 8-6 defeat Sunday against Kansas City. He allowed three runs on a hit, a walk and a hit batsman in two-thirds of an inning.
ANALYSIS
Holmes entered the game in the ninth with the Yankees leading 6-5 and retired the first batter he faced. After walking Whit Merrifield and beaning Bobby Witt, Holmes gave up a three-run homer to Salvador Perez. It was the first time all season a batter hit one out of the park against Holmes. The 29-year-old has now blown two of his last three save chances and walked eight batters in his last 7.2 innings.
Jul 29, 2022
Picks up win Thursday
Holmes (5-1) earned the win over the Royals on Thursday, walking two batters and striking out one over one scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
With neither team able to produce a run through eight innings, Holmes was brought in for the top of the ninth. He threw only eight of 18 pitches for strikes and walked two batters but was able to escape without allowing any runs. He was then credited with the victory when Aaron Judge hit a walkoff blast in the bottom of the frame. Since an uncharacteristic collapse against the Reds on July 12 during which he gave up four runs without retiring a batter, Holmes has subsequently completed five scoreless outings. If there's any concern about the All-Star closer, it's that he's walked at least one batter in six of his past seven appearances after issuing only five free passes across his first 37 outings of the season.
Jul 22, 2022
Locks down 17th save
Holmes allowed one hit and struck out three across 1.2 scoreless innings to earn the save Friday against the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Holmes entered the game in the eighth inning after Michael King (elbow) exited suddenly. Holmes had no issue working on short notice and struck out half the batters he faced to record his 17th save of the season. He has maintained a pristine 1.26 ERA and 47:9 K:BB across 43 innings on the season.
Jul 13, 2022
Takes first loss
Holmes (4-1) gave up four earned runs on two hits, a walk, and two hit batters without recording an out to take the loss in a 4-3 defeat to the Reds on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Holmes has been one of the most dominant relievers in all of baseball this season, but he struggled immensely with his control in this outing, hitting Tyler Stephenson to load the basis and then later hitting Kyle Farmer to give up his second run of the inning. After Holmes was pulled from the game, he was responsible for the two runners who came in to score on a Jonathan India single off Wandy Peralta. Prior to this appearance, Holmes had only given up two earned runs all season. If he can bounce back soon, he should maintain his hold on the closer role in New York.
Jul 10, 2022
Can't convert save Saturday
Holmes was charged with a blown save against the Red Sox on Saturday as a result of allowing one hit and one walk over 1.1 scoreless innings. He struck out one batter.
ANALYSIS
Holmes entered the contest with two outs and a runner on second base while the Yankees were up by one run in the eighth inning. He walked Xander Bogaerts and gave up a single to Alex Verdugo, allowing Boston to tie the score. Holmes then retired Trevor Story and retired the side in order in the ninth, but Boston pulled out the win in the 10th frame. The blown save was just the second in 18 chances for Holmes on the season, and he's been exceptional overall with a minuscule 0.46 ERA, 0.74 WHIP and 40:6 K:BB over 39.1 innings.
Jul 8, 2022
Nails down 16th save
Holmes did not allow a baserunner and struck out one across a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Thursday against the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Holmes had little trouble protecting a one-run lead to record his 16th save of the season. Despite the return of Aroldis Chapman, Holmes has remained the preferred option as the Yankees' closer. That status is well deserved, as Holmes has maintained a tremendous 0.47 ERA and 39:5 K:BB across 38 innings on the campaign.
Jul 2, 2022
Logs 15th save
Holmes recorded the final out of a 6-1 win over the Guardians in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday, earning a save.
ANALYSIS
Wandy Peralta initially entered the game with a five-run lead, but allowed two singles and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases with two outs. Holmes was able to escape the bases-loaded jam without trouble, earning his third save in the last five days and his 15th of the year. The right-hander has a 0.49 ERA, 0.73 WHIP and 38:5 K:BB through 37 innings, and it's expected he'll continue to see save chances even with Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) back in action. Chapman has been designated to pitch in the last three innings of games, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, which suggests Holmes may have a slight upper-hand in the bullpen hierarchy for now.
Jun 29, 2022
Secures another save
Holmes didn't allow a baserunner in a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 14th save of the season in Wednesday's 5-3 win against Oakland. He did not record a strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Holmes threw 11 of his 16 pitches for strikes and induced three groundouts to deliver a clean save. The right-hander threw 22 pitches Tuesday and has pitched three of the past four days, so manager Aaron Boone could attempt to minimize Holmes' usage in Thursday's series finale at Houston.
Jun 29, 2022
Picks up 13th save
Holmes allowed an unearned run on two hits and zero walks during the ninth inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the A's. He struck out two batters.
ANALYSIS
Holmes struck out the first two batters he faced, but a catcher's interference and two singles brought home a run before he was able to record the final out. It was still a successful save for the right-hander, who is 13-for-14 in save chances and has a 0.50 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 38:5 K:BB across 35.2 innings this season. Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) has made multiple rehab appearances and is closing in on his return from the injured list, but Holmes' success could result in continued save chances even once Chapman is reinstated.
Jun 23, 2022
Notches 12th save
Holmes earned a save against the Rays on Wednesday, pitching a perfect inning during which he struck out one batter.
ANALYSIS
Holmes blew his first save of the season in his previous outing, but he bounced back in fine fashion Wednesday, retiring all three batters he faced on 16 pitches to secure a one-run win. The right-hander has been dominant for the Yankees throughout the campaign, posting a 0.53 ERA, 0.71 WHIP and 35:4 K:BB over 33.2 innings. Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) will likely return to action soon, but Holmes could continue to see save chances even after the veteran closer rejoins the club.
Jun 21, 2022
Blows save Monday
Holmes was tagged with a blown save Monday against Tampa Bay, allowing one run on two hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning. He struck out one batter.
ANALYSIS
Yankees starter Gerrit Cole pitched seven no-hit innings before giving up a single to start the eighth, and Holmes was called in from the bullpen one out later. The usually reliable reliever couldn't get the job done, giving up a pair of hits and a walk to allow the Rays to tie the game. Though New York pulled ahead in the top of the ninth, Holmes wasn't credited with a win due to his ineffective performance, per MLB Rule 9.17(c). The blown save was the first of the season for Holmes, who has racked up 11 saves and seven holds while posting a 0.55 ERA, 0.73 WHIP and 34:4 K:BB over 32.2 innings.
Jun 18, 2022
Continues scoreless streak
Holmes got four outs without giving up a hit or a walk to finish off a 4-0 shutout win over the Blue Jays in a non-save situation on Saturday. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Holmes continued his scoreless appearance streak with a perfect 1.1 innings. He has not given up a run in 29 straight appearances and 31.1 innings of work dating back to April 9. With the Yankees up by four runs, manager Aaron Boone called on Holmes with two outs in the eighth to retire the last four batters of the game. It was a non-save situation, but a perfectly normal role for a manager to bring in his closer. With Aroldis Chapman's impending return from an Achilles injury, Holmes' role in the bullpen could be challenged.
Jun 16, 2022
Picks up 11th save
Holmes picked up the save Wednesday against the Rays. He allowed zero runs on one hit and zero walks while striking out one over one inning.
ANALYSIS
Holmes entered in the ninth with a one-run lead and immediately allowed a leadoff, infield hit to Taylor Walls, which certainly could've been charged as an error to Anthony Rizzo. Regardless, the closer buckled down and retired three consecutive batters to pick up his 11th save of the season. Holmes continues to be stellar in the absence of Aroldis Chapman (Achilles), recording 11 saves and sporting a 0.60 WHIP with a 32:3 K:BB across his current 30.0 inning scoreless streak.
Jun 15, 2022
May not close when Chapman returns
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that he envisions using Holmes in high-leverage situations against the toughest parts of opposing lineups once Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) returns from the 15-day injured list, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Boone clarified that Holmes will be "closing some games, too," but the right-hander doesn't look as though he'll be picking up the majority of save chances like he has thus far during Chapman's absence. Chapman completed a bullpen session Tuesday and may be ready to return from the IL next week, but Holmes should retain plenty of fantasy value in the planned high-leverage role if he continues to close every now and then. Holmes has yet to allow a run in his last 27 appearances and sports an 0.59 WHIP and 31:3 K:BB in 29 innings during that span.
Jun 14, 2022
Picks up 10th save
Holmes earned the save, striking out two and allowing a hit in the ninth inning of a 2-0 win Tuesday over the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Holmes struck out the first two batters he faced before allowing a single and ending the game with a fly-out. The righty is now 10-for-10 in save opportunities and has a minuscule 0.30 ERA through 29.2 innings. Since allowing a run on Opening Day, he has tossed 29 consecutive scoreless frames.
Jun 10, 2022
Secures another save
Holmes earned the save against the Twins on Thursday, pitching a perfect ninth inning during which he struck out one batter.
ANALYSIS
It appeared unlikely that Holmes would make an appearance in the game when Minnesota jumped out to a 7-3 lead after three innings, but New York's offense stormed back to produce a three-run lead after eight frames. Holmes was brought in to close things out in the ninth, and he retired the side in order on 12 pitches. This was the right-hander's ninth save in ninth opportunities this season, and he has also racked up seven holds. Holmes has been one of the top relievers in MLB this season, complementing his saves and holds totals with a minuscule 0.33 ERA, 0.65 WHIP and 29:3 K:BB across 27.2 innings.
Jun 4, 2022
Picks up eighth save
Holmes tossed a clean inning with one strikeout Saturday against the Tigers to pick up his eighth save of the season.
ANALYSIS
Over his last seven appearances, Holmes has six saves, 10 strikeouts and one walk over 7.1 scoreless innings. As things sit, he profiles as one of the best relievers in baseball. He has the third-lowest ERA (0.35) among qualified relievers and the fifth-lowest xFIP (2.08).
Jun 3, 2022
Seals save after rocky outing
Holmes picked up his seventh save during Thursday's 2-1 win over the Angels. He allowed zero runs on zero hits and one walk while striking out one over one inning.
ANALYSIS
After retiring the first two batters, Holmes found himself in trouble after walking Shohei Ohtani and hitting Mike Trout and Jared Walsh. However, the right-hander sealed the save by getting Luis Rengifo on a groundout to shortstop. Holmes continues to shine, notching 23 straight scoreless appearances, and with Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) sidelined, he has recorded five straight saves and figures to continue operating as the Yankees' high-leverage reliever.
May 28, 2022
Nails down sixth save
Holmes struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Friday to record his sixth save of the season in a 2-0 win over the Rays.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander continues to dominate, as Holmes reeled off his 22nd straight scoreless appearance. With Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) lacking a timetable for his return, Holmes will continue to handle closer duties for the Yankees, a job he should have no difficulty thriving in given his 0.36 ERA, 0.69 WHIP and 26:2 K:BB through 24.2 innings.
May 26, 2022
Earns fifth save of season
Holmes picked up the save Wednesday against the Orioles. He allowed zero runs on two hits and zero walks while striking out one over one inning.
ANALYSIS
With Chad Green (elbow) on the 15-day injured list, Holmes has been the Yankees' go-to guy for high-leverage situations and has gone 3-for-3 in save opportunities over his last four appearances. Wednesday's performance was a bit shaky, as he allowed the game-tying run to reach, but Holmes slammed the door shut by striking out Jorge Mateo to end the game. Holmes currently sports a 0.38 ERA and a 24:2 K:BB across 23.2 innings.
May 21, 2022
Snags another save
Holmes tossed 1.1 perfect innings while striking out two on his way to a save in Saturday's 7-5 win over the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Holmes was called upon with one on and two out in the top of the eighth inning, forcing Andrew Vaughn to ground out to end the frame. Aaron Boone then opted to keep him in to pitch the ninth, producing a one-two-three inning while striking out two. It was the right-hander's second consecutive outing where he pitched more than an inning and secured a save. He now has four saves this season. With Chad Green (elbow) being placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday, Holmes will likely pick up more high leverage opportunities moving forward.
May 18, 2022
Secures third save
Holmes earned a save against the Orioles on Wednesday, tossing two scoreless innings during which he allowed one hit and struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Aroldis Chapman has been shaky of late and had pitched three of the past four days, so the Yankees opted not to go to him with a one-run lead entering the bottom of the ninth inning. Instead, manager Aaron Boone stuck with Holmes, who had thrown just eight pitches in a scoreless eighth frame. The right-hander had no trouble closing out the contest, retiring the side in order. Despite his recent struggles, Chapman hasn't blown a save this season and isn't likely to be demoted from the closer role just yet, but Holmes would be among the top candidates to step in if that decision were to be made down the road.
May 10, 2022
Notches another victory
Holmes (2-0) earned the win over Texas on Monday, retiring both batters he faced on four pitches.
ANALYSIS
After Nestor Cortes' no-hit bid ended with one out in the eighth inning, Holmes was brought in to navigate through the rest of the frame. He needed only four pitches to do so, and the Yankees put up the first (and only) run of the game in the bottom of the inning to line him up for the win. Cortes leads New York with four victories on the season, and he has registered a 15:2 K:BB along with a sparkling 0.82 ERA and 0.61 WHIP across 14.2 frames.
May 8, 2022
Picks up third win
Holmes (3-0) allowed a hit and no walks while striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the win over the Rangers in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader.
ANALYSIS
Holmes has been one of the most productive relievers in baseball early in the season, and the Yankees haven't hesitated to use him in high-leverage situations. Following Sunday's outing, he's recorded three wins, two saves and six holds with a 0.64 ERA and 0.86 WHIP in 14 innings over his first 14 relief appearances in 2022. Although Aroldis Chapman is the Yankees' clear closer, Holmes has been effective while being used in a variety of high-leverage scenarios.
Apr 28, 2022
Earns second save
Holmes earned the save, pitching a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts in a 5-2 win Wednesday over Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
Holmes recorded his second save of the season, sandwiching a groundout between two strikeouts. He's primarily a setup reliever and has recorded five holds on the season, last recording a save in a 5-2 victory over the Orioles on April 16. Since allowing a run on Opening Day, Holmes has thrown nine scoreless innings, striking out 11. Aroldis Chapman has been excellent to start the season and the closer role is firmly his but Holmes may continue to receive the occasional save opportunity.
Apr 27, 2022
Secures fifth hold
Holmes pitched a scoreless inning Tuesday against the Orioles, allowing one hit and striking out one to earn a hold.
ANALYSIS
Holmes came on in the seventh inning with a runner on second base and the Yankees holding a two-run lead. He allowed a hit that scored the inherited runner but otherwise navigated through the frame to preserve the lead. Holmes gave up a run in his first appearance of the season but has since held opponents scoreless across eight innings in his subsequent eight outings. He is tied for first in the American League with five holds on the campaign.
Apr 17, 2022
Notches first career save
Holmes earned the save against the Orioles on Saturday, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings during which he struck out one and didn't allow any hits or walks.
ANALYSIS
Holmes recorded the final out of the eighth inning, escaping an Orioles threat during which they brought the potential tying run to the plate. With usual closer Aroldis Chapman having having pitched each of the past two days, manager Aaron Boone opted to leave Holmes in to close things out in the ninth. That proved to be a good call, as the right-hander got three quick outs for the first save of his career. Holmes recorded a career-best 12 holds in 2021 and has already picked up two this season, so he is clearly becoming a trusted bullpen arm for the Yankees. However, Chapman isn't in imminent danger of losing his ninth-inning role, so Holmes shouldn't be expected to find himself in many additional save situations moving forward.
Mar 23, 2022
Signs deal with Yankees
Holmes agreed to a one-year, $1.1 million contract with the Yankees on Tuesday to avoid arbitration, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Holmes was acquired by the Yankees from the Pirates ahead of the 2021 trade deadline, and he's now officially under contract for the upcoming campaign. The right-hander appeared in 25 games for New York last year and had a 1.61 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 34:4 K:BB across 28 innings.
Sep 30, 2021
Serves up game-winning homer
Holmes (8-4) suffered the loss against the Blue Jays on Wednesday, allowing one run on one hit while striking out one across one inning.
ANALYSIS
Holmes was asked to handle the eighth inning with the scored tied 5-5. He immediately gave up a home run to Bo Bichette before retiring the next three batters in order. The right-hander was tagged with the loss when New York couldn't mount a comeback in the ninth. Despite the disappointing outcome, Holmes has been impressive since joining the Yankees in late July, posting a 1.73 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 32:3 K:BB over 26 innings. He has racked up five wins and six holds for New York.
Sep 14, 2021
Earns eighth win
Holmes (8-3) pitched a perfect inning, striking out one batter to pick up the win over Minnesota on Monday.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander pitched the top of the 10th inning for New York and retired the side in order while preventing the designated runner from crossing the plate. He was credited with the win as a result of Gary Sanchez driving home the winning run in the bottom of the frame. Holmes has earned five wins in 16 appearances since joining the Yankees in late July, and he has registered an excellent 2.04 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 21:1 K:BB across 17.2 frames during that stretch.
Sep 9, 2021
Takes loss Wednesday
Holmes (6-3) was tagged with the loss against Toronto on Wednesday, allowing an unearned run on two hits while striking out two over one inning.
ANALYSIS
Both hits against the right-hander went for singles, but an error by Andrew Velazquez provided the extra base needed for Toronto to scratch out a run. Despite the loss Wednesday, Holmes has been very effective since joining the Yankees in late July, posting a 2.30 ERA, 0.70 WHIP and 19:1 K:BB across 15.2 innings.
Sep 3, 2021
Earns win in extra innings
Holmes (6-2) allowed a hit and struck out one in one inning to earn the win Friday versus Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander kept Baltimore off the board in the 11th inning, setting the stage for Giancarlo's walkoff single in the Yankees' half of the frame. Holmes has yielded only three runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out 12 in 12.1 innings since he joined the Yankees at the trade deadline. He's added three wins and three holds in that span, although there's little chance he works his way into a more prominent role with Aroldis Chapman entrenched as the closer. Chad Green and Jonathan Loaisiga are more likely to get ninth-inning duties if Chapman falters.
Aug 24, 2021
Picks up fifth win
Holmes (5-2) worked a perfect inning with a strikeout Tuesday night, nabbing the win in the Yankees' 5-4 victory over the Braves.
ANALYSIS
In his first appearance since returning from the COVID-19 IL, Holmes needed just nine pitches to get three outs, punctuating his outing by striking out Adam Duvall on three pitches. Since joining the Yankees before the trade deadline, the right-hander has a 1.93 ERA with eight strikeouts over 9.1 innings pitched.
Aug 23, 2021
Reinstated from COVID-19 IL
Holmes (illness) was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Monday.
ANALYSIS
Holmes tested positive for COVID-19 nearly two weeks ago but rejoined the Yankees on Thursday. He threw side sessions to test his health but wasn't activated during the team's series against the Twins. However, the right-hander will be available out of the bullpen for Monday's series opener in Atlanta. Holmes has made 12 relief appearances since the All-Star break, and he's posted a 4.97 ERA and 0.95 WHIP in 12.2 innings during that time.
Aug 19, 2021
Clears COVID protocols
Manager Aaron Boone said Holmes (illness) will rejoin the Yankees on Thursday but won't be activated from the COVID-19 injured list ahead of the team's series opener versus the Twins, Max Goodman of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After testing positive for COVID-19 early last week and going into quarantine, Holmes has since cleared all health and safety protocols and is able to resume working out. The Yankees plan to have Holmes throw a bullpen session Friday as a final test of his health, so he likely won't be activated until Saturday at the earliest. Holmes has posted a 4.47 ERA over 51 relief appearances between the Pirates and Yankees this season.

Goes on COVID IL
The Yankees placed Holmes on the COVID-19 injured list Wednesday, Erik Boland of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
The club indicated that Holmes is dealing "with symptoms" of the virus, though it's unknown at this point whether he's actually tested positive. Regardless, Holmes will begin a quarantine and will miss time as a result of being placed on the IL. The Yankees called up Brooks Kriske from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move to provide an extra arm in the bullpen ahead of Wednesday's series finale in Kansas City.

Picks up relief win
Holmes (4-2) earned the win in relief Monday at Kansas City despite giving up two runs (one earned) on one hit and one walk across one inning.
ANALYSIS
Holmes pitched the 10th inning and quickly found himself with runners on the corners with one out, a situation he couldn't close out since he gave up back-to-back sac flies to Jarrod Dyson and Hanser Alberto. Holmes limited the damage and took advantage of the fact that the Yankees scored three runs in the 11th to come away with the win, though. He owns a 2.16 ERA and a 7:1 K:BB across 8.1 innings since being acquired by the Yankees in late July.

Hurls scoreless frame in team debut
Holmes pitched a perfect inning and struck out one batter against Tampa Bay on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
The Yankees trailed by 14 runs when Holmes came into the contest in the eighth inning, so he wasn't exactly pitching under pressure. Still, it was a positive New York debut for the right-hander, who was acquired from the Pirates on Monday. Holmes figures to see mostly low-leverage work for the Yankees given his 4.81 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 5.2 BB/9 on the season.
Jul 26, 2021
Traded to Yankees
Holmes was sent from the Pirates to the Yankees on Monday in exchange for Diego Castillo and Hoy Park, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
This won't be anywhere near the biggest deal this deadline season, but Holmes should at least be a useful piece for the Yankees. His 4.93 ERA in 42 innings of relief this season isn't particularly encouraging, but it comes with a much better 4.06 FIP and 3.81 xFIP. While he walks too many batters (13.2 percent), his 72.8 percent groundball rate leads all pitchers who have thrown at least 30 innings this season. When combined with a roughly average 23.3 percent strikeout rate, that should make Holmes at least a serviceable middle reliever.

Takes loss against Nats
Holmes (1-2) allowed one run on one hit in Monday's 3-2 loss to Washington. He struck out two batters.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander served up an eighth-inning, solo homer to Kyle Schwarber that proved to be the difference in a one-run game. It's encouraging that Holmes is being used in more high-leverage situations, but he's given up at least one earned run in each of his last three outings.

Earns win in relief
Holmes (2-0) earned the win in relief Saturday against the Marlins after tossing a scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
Holmes tossed 10 of his 16 pitches for strikes and kept the Marlins off the board in the top of the 12th inning -- that was enough to grant him his second win of the campaign. The 28-year-old right-hander has been pitching well of late, though, and he's gone 13 straight outings (12 innings) without allowing a run, posting an 11:4 K:BB in that span.

Another fine outing
Holmes pitched a scoreless inning Sunday in a 4-3 loss to Colorado, giving up one hit and a walk while striking out two.
ANALYSIS
Holmes collected his second hold of the season Sunday and first since Opening Day. The 28-year-old has not allowed a run in his last 14 outings covering 14.1 innings, lowering his earned run average to below 3.00 (2.96) for the first time since his April 6 blow-up (five runs in one-third inning). The righty entered 2021 with a career 5.91 ERA and 1.75 WHIP (in 77.2 innings) but has posted a 2.96 ERA and 1.11 WHIP (in 24.1 innings). He could move into a more high-leverage role if the team trades Richard Rodriguez and Kyle Crick at the trade deadline.

Pitching well out of pen
Holmes threw two scoreless innings in a 4-1 loss to the Giants on Sunday, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander's 3.66 ERA in 19.2 innings includes a five-run outing in which he recorded only one out on April 6. Otherwise, he's allowed just one earned run in 18 appearances. Holmes has walked only six batters, posting a 1.22 WHIP. Prior to 2021, he'd walked 59 batters en route to a career 1.75 WHIP in 77.2 innings. The team has yet to deploy in many high leverage spots -- he has zero holds or saves -- but the 28-year-old has taken positive strides following his offseason non-tender.

Collects first win
Holmes (1-0) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings with one walks and one strikeout to earn the win Sunday versus the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Holmes completed the fifth inning with the Pirates leading, and they never fell behind. The 28-year-old has a 6.35 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 10:4 K:BB across 11.1 innings this season. He allowed five runs in one-third of an inning April 6 versus the Reds, but he's otherwise been fairly effective in a low-leverage role.

Contract selected by Pirates
Holmes' contract was selected by the Pirates on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Holmes returned to the Pirates on a minor-league deal in December, but he'll break camp with the major-league club after an impressive spring. The right-hander made 10 relief appearances this spring and tossed 9.2 scoreless innings with a 1.03 WHIP and 8:3 K:BB. He made just one relief appearance for the Pirates in 2020 but will begin the 2021 season in the major-league bullpen.
Mar 25, 2021
Turning heads in camp
Holmes thew a scoreless inning against the Orioles on Wednesday, allowing no hits or walks while striking out one batter.
ANALYSIS
Holmes, who was taken off the 40-man roster over the winter, has strung together eight scoreless spring outings covering 7.1 innings. The nearly 28-year-old has struggled in the majors, with a 5.91 ERA and 78:59 K:BB in 77.2 innings, but is finally healthy. Fantasy owners need not pick up Holmes right now, but he looks like a completely different pitcher so far in 2021 and will likely get a chance to show his wares at some point this summer.

Cleared for spring opener
Holmes (forearm) is scheduled to pitch in relief Sunday in the Pirates' Grapefruit League opener against the Orioles, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Holmes reported to spring training at full strength after a strained right forearm sidelined him for most of the abbreviated 2020 campaign. The 27-year-old is attending big-league camp as a non-roster invitee and will be vying for a spot in the Pirates' Opening Day bullpen.
Dec 4, 2020
Back with Pirates
Holmes signed a minor-league-deal with Pittsburgh that includes an invitation to spring training Friday.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old was non-tendered by the Pirates earlier this week, but he'll return to the organization on a lesser deal. Holmes spent most of the 2020 season on the shelf with a right forearm strain, and it's unclear if he's expected to be ready for the start of spring training, though the invite to big-league camp is an encouraging sign.
Dec 2, 2020
Hits open market
Holmes (forearm) was non-tendered by the Pirates on Wednesday, Stephen J. Nesbitt of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
He ended the year on the shelf with a strained right forearm and never had much success in the majors, logging a 6.84 ERA in 2018 and a 5.58 ERA in 2019. Considering Holmes never returned to the mound, he may end up needing surgery on his elbow.

Transferred to 45-day IL
Holmes (forearm) was transferred to the 45-day injured list Tuesday, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Holmes has been sidelined since the end of July with a right forearm strain. The team wasn't initially anticipating a very long absence, but the issue is evidently more serious than they thought. The 27-year-old will be eligible to return late in the 2020 campaign, but it wouldn't be surprising if the team shut him down for the remainder of the season so he can fully recover. Right-hander Nick Tropeano was claimed off waivers and optioned to the alternate training site to take Holmes' spot on the 40-man roster.
Aug 6, 2020
Not throwing yet
Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Wednesday that Holmes has yet to resume throwing while continuing to experience "some mild symptoms" of a strained right forearm, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Pirates aren't anticipating an overly lengthy absence for Holmes, but he'll be sidelined for more than the minimum amount of time after he was placed on the 10-day injured list July 28. Once he's back throwing again, Holmes may only need about a week to get his arm conditioned for middle-relief duty out of the Pittsburgh bullpen.
Jul 28, 2020
Sidelined with forearm injury
Holmes was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right forearm strain Tuesday, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After his fastball clocked in at 94.3 mph over the past two seasons, Holmes' velocity was down to 92.4 mph in his first appearance in 2020, and his forearm injury could help provide a reasoning. It's unclear how much time the right-hander will miss as a result. Despite his decreased velocity, Holmes allowed no runs on two hits and no walks while striking out one over 1.1 innings in his season debut.

Healthy after layoff
Holmes (foot) threw a scoreless inning during summer camp Friday, The Athletic Pittsburgh reports.
ANALYSIS
The righty is returning after breaking his foot during Grapefruit League action. "I think he threw 10 or 11 pitches," manager Derek Shelton said. "The slider was really, really good. He was one of the guys I was sitting behind the plate on and just watching the action on it; that was good to see." The 27-year-old hasn't been able to put everything together at the big league level. In 76 career innings, Holmes has struck out 77 batters in 76.1 innings but has posted a 6.01 ERA and 1.76 WHIP.
Apr 22, 2020
Ready to throw off slope
Holmes (foot) is scheduled to throw off a slope this week, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Holmes suffered a fractured foot early on in spring training when he was hit by a groundball. The injury forced him into a walking boot for several weeks, but the right-hander was able to keep his arm in shape by throwing from one knee. Now that the fracture is fully healed, Holmes can start the progression from a slight incline to a full mound and possibly to throwing to live batters before long.
Mar 25, 2020
Throwing from one knee
Holmes (foot) is throwing from one knee out to 90 feet, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
A fractured left foot is expected to keep Holmes in a walking boot until mid-April, but it hasn't shut down his throwing program completely. With the expected date for the resumption of play still unclear, it's possible Holmes doesn't wind up missing any time.
Mar 1, 2020
Out with fractured foot
Holmes was diagnosed with a fractured foot Sunday and will be in a walking boot 4-to-6 weeks, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Holmes was forced to leave Saturday's game after being struck by a comebacker on his first pitch, and he'll now miss the start of the regular season as a result. The 26-year-old could potentially be in the walking boot until mid-April, so there's a very real chance he won't be cleared for game action until May.
Feb 29, 2020
Hit by grounder
Holmes exited Saturday's Grapefruit League against the Twins after being struck in the ankle by a ground ball, Nubyjas Wilborn of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
It was the only batter he faced before leaving the field under his own power. Holmes will be examined further over the next couple days, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him take at least a couple days off to be safe.
