Holmes should still have a firm grasp on the closer role considering his recent run of success, but Sunday's blowup increased his season ERA from 2.01 to 2.80.

The 30-year-old Holmes has converted his last five save chances, striking out five over five scoreless innings in that span. Overall, he's 15-for-18 in save opportunities this season with an impressive 2.11 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 52:16 K:BB across 42.2 innings this season.

Holmes had no problem protecting a two-run ninth-inning Yankees lead, throwing 11 of his 14 pitches for a strike and retiring all three batters he faced. The right-hander continues to pitch well after a shaky start to the campaign, holding the opponent scoreless in 28 of his past 31 outings. Over that span, he's posted a minuscule 0.88 ERA and 0.95 WHIP while notching a 38:11 K:BB and recording 10 saves in 11 chances across 30.2 frames.

Holmes did not allow a hit and struck out two over 1.2 scoreless frames to pick up the save over the Mariners on Tuesday.

Holmes took the ball from Gerritt Cole after Cole got the first out in the eighth and shut the Mariners down without issue. He picked up his fifth save this month though Tuesday was his first appearance since June 13. Holmes has now pitched 8.2 scoreless frames dating back to May 31 and has struck out multiple hitters in five of eight appearances since then. The 30-year-old owns a 2.35 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 38:13 K:BB across 30.2 innings on the year.

Holmes was tasked with preserving the Yankees' combined shutout and succeeded in doing so despite issuing a leadoff walk. The righty reliever has allowed just one run over 16.1 frames across his past 16 appearances, posting a 20:8 K:BB over that span. The strong stretch has helped him reclaim the primary closer role for New York -- he's earned three of the team's last four saves after going without any saves between April 12 and May 20.

Holmes (2-2) earned the win over the Reds on Saturday, walking one batter and striking out one in a scoreless inning.

Holmes handled the bottom of the ninth for New York with the score tied 3-3 and held Cincinnati at bay to send the game to an extra frame. The right-hander has now pitched in a non-save situation in each of his past nine outings, compiling a 1.04 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 12:2 K:BB over 8.2 innings while notching two wins and three holds. While those are excellent numbers, Holmes' fantasy value in formats that don't count holds will be minimal unless he's able to work his way up to closing games again.

Holmes (1-2) earned the win over Tampa Bay on Friday, allowing one hit and no runs over two-thirds of an inning. He struck out one batter.

The Yankees carried a two-run lead into the eighth frame, but Michael King served up a three-run homer to Josh Lowe to cough up the advantage. With one out and one on, Holmes was summoned to try to prevent additional damage, and he was able to do so despite giving up a single to the first batter he faced. New York then took the lead back on a two-run shot by Anthony Rizzo in the bottom of the frame, lining Holmes up for his first victory of the campaign. Meanwhile, Wandy Peralta closed things out with a scoreless ninth to record his first save of the season. This was the fifth straight outing for Holmes in which he was used in a non-save situation, though he continues to see mostly high-leverage work and has allowed just one run while posting a 6:1 K:BB over four innings during that span. He may still be the most likely option for save chances in what has become an unsettled New York bullpen, but with his last save coming April 12 and four different Yankees relievers nabbing at least one save in the interim,

Holmes earned a hold against Tampa Bay on Saturday, allowing one hit in an inning of work.

After New York rallied to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning, manager Aaron Boone turned to Holmes to face the heart of the Rays' order in the bottom of the frame. He gave up a leadoff single that was quickly erased on a double play and needed just seven pitches overall to get through the scoreless inning. However, rather than being kept in the game to go for a multi-inning save, Holmes was relieved by Ian Hamilton, who closed things out for his first career save. There was no changing of the guard here -- if anything, it was a testament to Boone's faith in Holmes that he brought him in to face the toughest part of Tampa's lineup -- but the outing was a reminder that Holmes won't always work the ninth inning. He had been struggling of late, so a positive spin is that the effective performance against MLB's top team could help the closer regain any diminished confidence.

Holmes allowed a run on two hits in one-third of an inning against Cleveland on Wednesday.

Two days after Holmes was given a verbal vote of confidence from manager Aaron Boone, the right-hander was called upon to preserve a 2-2 tie with two outs and the bases empty in the top of the ninth. He couldn't come through, allowing a Myles Straw double and an Oscar Gonzalez single that pushed the go-ahead run across the plate for the Guardians. Holmes did manage to record the final out of the frame, and he was bailed out of a loss when the Yankees tied the score in the bottom of the ninth. Still, this was a discouraging outing for the closer, who has blown two saves and taken two losses while allowing five runs (three earned) across 4.1 frames over his past six appearances.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone gave Holmes a vote of confidence Monday, saying the closer is "in a good spot" and can "get through this," Max Goodman of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.

Holmes suffered his second blown save Monday versus the Guardians and now has a 3.72 ERA on the season. It sounds like he will still be Boone's primary option to close for the time being, though. Even with this vote of confidence for Holmes, Michael King makes for a good roster stash.

Holmes (0-2) blew the save and took the loss during Monday's 3-2 loss to the Guardians, allowing two runs on two hits and zero walks while failing to record an out.

Domingo German took a shutout into the ninth inning, but after a one-out single, he was pulled with 88 pitches. Holmes was called on to replace the starter, but he allowed the first batter to reach on a fielding error and surrendered back-to-back singles to tie the game at 2-2. After securing his first four save opportunities this season, he's blown back-to-back chances, so the Yankees might start looking elsewhere for potential closing options, with Michael King being the most likely candidate.

Holmes (0-1) came in for the eighth inning Friday with the top of the lineup due up for the Twins and gave up two earned runs on two hits and one walk with zero strikeouts. He took the loss and blown save.

Michael King was unavailable so the Yankees called on their closer with Byron Buxton and Carlos Correa due up in the eighth inning and a 3-2 lead to protect. Holmes said after the game that he knew he might be called upon earlier than usual Friday and took responsibility for the blown lead. He should still have a good hold on the closer role.

Holmes collected his fourth save of the season Wednesday against the Guardians, allowing zero hits and two walks over one scoreless inning with a strikeout.

After getting hit around in his first appearance of the season against the Giants on April 1, Holmes has now responded by throwing five consecutive shutout innings while earning a save in each of his last four appearances. It's a promising return to form for the 30-year-old closer, who boasts a 2.34 ERA since joining the Yankees in 2021.

Holmes got the call with the Yankees up two runs heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, and the right-hander made quick work of three Orioles batters, needing just nine pitches (eight of which were strikes) to retire the side in order. After a rough first appearance this season during which he allowed two runs over two-thirds of an inning, Holmes has settled in with four consecutive scoreless appearances during which he has allowed just one hit and posted a 7:1 K:BB over four frames. Though manager Aaron Boone suggested during spring camp that he could envision "a number of guys" closing games for the team this year, Holmes has thus far earned all three of the Yankees' saves.

Holmes is expected to get most of the save opportunities for the Yankees this season, but his first appearance of the campaign came with New York trailing by a run in the top of the ninth inning. The right-hander was unable to maintain the narrow deficit, as he allowed two runs to cross the plate while registering just two outs. It's unlikely that the poor debut will push Holmes out of the primary closer role, but it's also worth noting that he hadn't saved any games in four seasons prior to last year and struggled in the second half of last season, so he may not have a long leash if he struggles early in the campaign.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated over the weekend that Holmes may sometimes be used outside of save situations during the regular season, Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports. "There are going to be days where if it's [George] Springer, [Bo] Bichette and Vladdy [Vladimir Guerrero Jr.] coming up in the eighth inning in a big spot, that might be Clay," Boone explained.

Boone suggested that he plans to deploy Holmes in the highest leverage situations, which could come earlier than the ninth inning at times and may not always qualify the right-handed hurler for a save. Still, the manager hinted that he would continue to see plenty of chances to close, stating, "I would expect [Holmes] to close a lot of games for us. Probably most games, and hopefully a lot of games. But I do see a number of guys getting saves." Holmes didn't earn any saves in his first four big-league seasons, but he racked up 20 last year after taking over the ninth-inning role in the first half of the campaign. The reliever's stock is boosted by playing for a team projected to be among the best in the league, but Boone's comments and Holmes' late-season fade last year provide enough risk to keep him outside of the top 10 closers in fantasy drafts.

Holmes agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Yankees on Friday, avoiding arbitration.

Holmes broke out in his age-29 season last year, finishing the season with a 2.54 ERA and 1.02 WHIP while recording the first 20 saves of his career. He's the clear favorite to lead the Yankees in saves this season, though the fact that his ERA jumped from 1.31 prior to the break to 4.84 in the second half makes him a higher-risk option than one might expect when looking at only his season-long numbers.

Manager Aaron Boone said Holmes (shoulder) is available to close Game 1 of the ALDS against the Guardians on Tuesday, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.

Holmes has been held out of action since the end of September with a strained right shoulder. After his recent throwing sessions went "really well" according to Boone, Holmes is now cleared for postseason action. 2022 marked a career year for the 29-year-old righty as he recorded a 2.54 ERA and 1.02 WHIP over 63.2 innings during the regular season.

Holmes (shoulder) is scheduled to face a few batters Monday and expects to be named to the ALDS roster, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.

Holmes suffered a right shoulder strain at the end of September and hasn't pitched in a game since Sept. 26, but the reliever is confident his name will be on the roster for the upcoming ALDS against Cleveland, which begins Tuesday. Holmes noted that he was able to throw "free and easy" in his last bullpen session, and also that his velocity looked good, but he's unsure of his availability for Game 1, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. His status figures to depend on how he feels during Monday's session.

Holmes (shoulder) won't be placed on the injured list since he would then be out for the ALDS, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.

Holmes has been sidelined with a right shoulder strain and is five days into a planned 10-day shutdown from throwing. However, manager Aaron Boone said Saturday that he hopes Holmes will be able to build back up in time to pitch in the ALDS, which begins Oct. 11.

Holmes is out with a right shoulder strain and the Yankees hope to have him ready for the ALDS, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

A recent MRI confirmed the strain and Holmes also had a cortisone shot. Candidates to get the ball in the Yankees' next save opportunity include Scott Effross, Lou Trivino and Aroldis Chapman. It's possible Holmes won't pitch again until 2023.

Holmes (7-4) earned the win over Boston on Thursday, allowing one hit and striking out one batter over two innings.

Though it wasn't a save situation, Holmes' outing Thursday was a positive step after he allowed a run in four of his previous five appearances. The right-hander preserved a 4-4 tie by keeping Boston off the scoreboard in the ninth inning and worked around the automatic runner in the 10th to again prevent a run. He was credited with the win after the Yankees walked it off in the bottom of the frame. Holmes isn't guaranteed to get all of New York's save chances moving forward with manager Aaron Boone recently indicating he may shift to a committee approach, though Holmes figures to still be in the mix in that scenario.

Holmes has given up runs in five of his past six outings, and manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday the Yankees will take a committee approach "on a matchup basis" going forward for the bullpen, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.

Holmes allowed only one run over his first six innings after he returned from the injured list in late August, but the right-hander is now scuffling once again and has lost his grip on the closer role. The 29-year-old still has a 2.55 ERA for the season, though he's allowed 12 earned runs in 19 outings since the All-Star break. Boone didn't specify his preferred option for save chances, but lefties Aroldis Chapman and Wandy Peralta could now be in the mix, as well as Scott Effross (shoulder), who will be activated from the injured list Thursday.

Holmes (6-4) gave up one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out one over 0.2 innings to take the loss in a 7-6 defeat against the Brewers on Friday.

Holmes came into a tie-game in the bottom of the ninth and promptly gave up a leadoff double to Hunter Renfroe. The baserunner would eventually come around to score and give the Brewers the walk-off victory on a bases-loaded single by the number nine hitter, Garrett Mitchell. Holmes had converted his last three save opportunities coming into the game but has an ERA of 4.50 in seven September appearances.

Holmes picked up the save in Wednesday's 5-3 victory over the Red Sox. He allowed one run on one hit while striking out one over one inning.

Holmes surrendered a double to Abraham Almonte who later scored on a groundout from Enrique Hernandez. In his last 11 appearances, the righty's 3.86 ERA over 11.2 innings has been higher than he's grown accustomed to this season. The 29-year-old will likely see a decrease in high-leverage opportunities with the expected return of lefty reliever Aroldis Chapman (leg) on Friday.

Holmes (6-3) earned the win in Tuesday's 7-6 extra-inning victory over Boston. He allowed two runs on no hits and no walks while striking out one over 1.1 innings.

Holmes entered the game with the score tied 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth and recorded a clean inning to send it to extras, but he ran into trouble in the 10th after the Yankees took a 7-4 lead. He was pulled after hitting Reese McGuire with one out. Wandy Peralta relieved him and allowed a base hit and a wild pitch to score the ghost runner and McGuire to make it a 7-6 game. Peralta worked out of it, however, and earned Holmes his sixth win of the season. Holmes has been shaky of late as he has allowed 11 runs (nine earned) in 12.1 innings dating back to July 31.

Boone hinted a day earlier that Holmes' ongoing bout with back spasms would likely result in a stint on the IL, though the skipper noted that he's hopeful the 29-year-old misses the minimum 15 days, per Feinsand. Even if Holmes needs only a minimum-length IL stay, he may not reclaim the closer's gig when healthy, given his recent struggles of late in addition to Aroldis Chapman's long track record at the back end of the bullpen. It was Chapman's stint on the IL earlier in the season that allowed Holmes to take the closer's job and run with it, but Chapman has since returned to top form after a few turbulent appearances following his activation from the IL in early July. Over his last nine outings, Chapman has allowed five baserunners and has struck out 10 over 9.1 scoreless innings. The Yankees likely won't have much hesitation about reinstalling Chapman in the ninth-inning role while Holmes is on the shelf.

Aroldis Chapman hasn't been scored upon in his past nine outings and is likely to reclaim ninth-inning duties if Holmes is out.

The right-hander has a 2.12 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 50:14 K:BB while going 17-for-21 in save chances across 46.2 innings this season.

Holmes (5-2) picked up the loss after blowing a save in an 8-6 defeat Sunday against Kansas City. He allowed three runs on a hit, a walk and a hit batsman in two-thirds of an inning.

Holmes entered the game in the ninth with the Yankees leading 6-5 and retired the first batter he faced. After walking Whit Merrifield and beaning Bobby Witt, Holmes gave up a three-run homer to Salvador Perez. It was the first time all season a batter hit one out of the park against Holmes. Holmes has been one of the most dominant relievers in all of baseball this season, but he struggled immensely with his control in this outing, hitting Tyler Stephenson to load the basis and then later hitting Kyle Farmer to give up his second run of the inning. After Holmes was pulled from the game, he was responsible for the two runners who came in to score on a Jonathan India single off Wandy Peralta. Prior to this appearance, Holmes had only given up two earned runs all season. If he can bounce back soon, he should maintain his hold on the closer role in New York.

Holmes was charged with a blown save against the Red Sox on Saturday as a result of allowing one hit and one walk over 1.1 scoreless innings. He struck out one batter.

Holmes has been one of the most productive relievers in baseball early in the season, and the Yankees haven't hesitated to use him in high-leverage situations. Following Sunday's outing, he's recorded three wins, two saves and six holds with a 0.64 ERA and 0.86 WHIP in 14 innings over his first 14 relief appearances in 2022. Although Aroldis Chapman is the Yankees' clear closer, Holmes has been effective while being used in a variety of high-leverage scenarios.

Holmes (6-2) allowed a hit and struck out one in one inning to earn the win Friday versus Baltimore.

The right-hander kept Baltimore off the board in the 11th inning, setting the stage for Giancarlo's walkoff single in the Yankees' half of the frame. Holmes has yielded only three runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out 12 in 12.1 innings since he joined the Yankees at the trade deadline. He's added three wins and three holds in that span, although there's little chance he works his way into a more prominent role with Aroldis Chapman entrenched as the closer. Chad Green and Jonathan Loaisiga are more likely to get ninth-inning duties if Chapman falters.

Holmes (5-2) worked a perfect inning with a strikeout Tuesday night, nabbing the win in the Yankees' 5-4 victory over the Braves.

In his first appearance since returning from the COVID-19 IL, Holmes needed just nine pitches to get three outs, punctuating his outing by striking out Adam Duvall on three pitches. Since joining the Yankees before the trade deadline, the right-hander has a 1.93 ERA with eight strikeouts over 9.1 innings pitched.

Holmes (illness) was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Monday.

Holmes tested positive for COVID-19 nearly two weeks ago but rejoined the Yankees on Thursday. After testing positive for COVID-19 early last week and going into quarantine, Holmes has since cleared all health and safety protocols and is able to resume working out. The Yankees plan to have Holmes throw a bullpen session Friday as a final test of his health, so he likely won't be activated until Saturday at the earliest. Holmes has posted a 4.47 ERA over 51 relief appearances between the Pirates and Yankees this season.

The Yankees placed Holmes on the COVID-19 injured list Wednesday, Erik Boland of Newsday reports.

The club indicated that Holmes is dealing "with symptoms" of the virus, though it's unknown at this point whether he's actually tested positive. Regardless, Holmes will begin a quarantine and will miss time as a result of being placed on the IL. The Yankees called up Brooks Kriske from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move to provide an extra arm in the bullpen ahead of Wednesday's series finale in Kansas City.

Holmes (4-2) earned the win in relief Monday at Kansas City despite giving up two runs (one earned) on one hit and one walk across one inning.

Holmes pitched the 10th inning and quickly found himself with runners on the corners with one out, a situation he couldn't close out since he gave up back-to-back sac flies to Jarrod Dyson and Hanser Alberto. Holmes limited the damage and took advantage of the fact that the Yankees scored three runs in the 11th to come away with the win, though. He owns a 2.16 ERA and a 7:1 K:BB across 8.1 innings since being acquired by the Yankees in late July.

Holmes pitched a perfect inning and struck out one batter against Tampa Bay on Thursday.

The Yankees trailed by 14 runs when Holmes came into the contest in the eighth inning, so he wasn't exactly pitching under pressure. Still, it was a positive New York debut for the right-hander, who was acquired from the Pirates on Monday. Holmes figures to see mostly low-leverage work for the Yankees given his 4.81 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 5.2 BB/9 on the season.

Holmes was sent from the Pirates to the Yankees on Monday in exchange for Diego Castillo and Hoy Park, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

This won't be anywhere near the biggest deal this deadline season, but Holmes should at least be a useful piece for the Yankees. His 4.93 ERA in 42 innings of relief this season isn't particularly encouraging, but it comes with a much better 4.06 FIP and 3.81 xFIP. While he walks too many batters (13.2 percent), his 72.8 percent groundball rate leads all pitchers who have thrown at least 30 innings this season. When combined with a roughly average 23.3 percent strikeout rate, that should make Holmes at least a serviceable middle reliever.

Holmes (1-2) allowed one run on one hit in Monday's 3-2 loss to Washington. He struck out two batters.

The right-hander served up an eighth-inning, solo homer to Kyle Schwarber that proved to be the difference in a one-run game. It's encouraging that Holmes is being used in more high-leverage situations, but he's given up at least one earned run in each of his last three outings.

Holmes (2-0) earned the win in relief Saturday against the Marlins after tossing a scoreless inning.

Holmes tossed 10 of his 16 pitches for strikes and kept the Marlins off the board in the top of the 12th inning -- that was enough to grant him his second win of the campaign. The 28-year-old right-hander has been pitching well of late, though, and he's gone 13 straight outings (12 innings) without allowing a run, posting an 11:4 K:BB in that span.

Holmes pitched a scoreless inning Sunday in a 4-3 loss to Colorado, giving up one hit and a walk while striking out two.

Holmes collected his second hold of the season Sunday and first since Opening Day. The 28-year-old has not allowed a run in his last 14 outings covering 14.1 innings, lowering his earned run average to below 3.00 (2.96) for the first time since his April 6 blow-up (five runs in one-third inning). The righty entered 2021 with a career 5.91 ERA and 1.75 WHIP (in 77.2 innings) but has posted a 2.96 ERA and 1.11 WHIP (in 24.1 innings). He could move into a more high-leverage role if the team trades Richard Rodriguez and Kyle Crick at the trade deadline.

Holmes threw two scoreless innings in a 4-1 loss to the Giants on Sunday, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one.

The right-hander's 3.66 ERA in 19.2 innings includes a five-run outing in which he recorded only one out on April 6. Otherwise, he's allowed just one earned run in 18 appearances. Holmes has walked only six batters, posting a 1.22 WHIP. Prior to 2021, he'd walked 59 batters en route to a career 1.75 WHIP in 77.2 innings. The team has yet to deploy in many high leverage spots -- he has zero holds or saves -- but the 28-year-old has taken positive strides following his offseason non-tender.

Holmes (1-0) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings with one walks and one strikeout to earn the win Sunday versus the Twins.

Holmes completed the fifth inning with the Pirates leading, and they never fell behind. The 28-year-old has a 6.35 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 10:4 K:BB across 11.1 innings this season. He allowed five runs in one-third of an inning April 6 versus the Reds, but he's otherwise been fairly effective in a low-leverage role.

Holmes' contract was selected by the Pirates on Thursday.

Holmes returned to the Pirates on a minor-league deal in December, but he'll break camp with the major-league club after an impressive spring. The right-hander made 10 relief appearances this spring and tossed 9.2 scoreless innings with a 1.03 WHIP and 8:3 K:BB. He made just one relief appearance for the Pirates in 2020 but will begin the 2021 season in the major-league bullpen.

Holmes thew a scoreless inning against the Orioles on Wednesday, allowing no hits or walks while striking out one batter.

Holmes, who was taken off the 40-man roster over the winter, has strung together eight scoreless spring outings covering 7.1 innings. The nearly 28-year-old has struggled in the majors, with a 5.91 ERA and 78:59 K:BB in 77.2 innings, but is finally healthy. Fantasy owners need not pick up Holmes right now, but he looks like a completely different pitcher so far in 2021 and will likely get a chance to show his wares at some point this summer.

Holmes (forearm) is scheduled to pitch in relief Sunday in the Pirates' Grapefruit League opener against the Orioles, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

Holmes reported to spring training at full strength after a strained right forearm sidelined him for most of the abbreviated 2020 campaign. The 27-year-old is attending big-league camp as a non-roster invitee and will be vying for a spot in the Pirates' Opening Day bullpen.

The Pirates aren't anticipating an overly lengthy absence for Holmes, but he'll be sidelined for more than the minimum amount of time after he was placed on the 10-day injured list July 28. Once he's back throwing again, Holmes may only need about a week to get his arm conditioned for middle-relief duty out of the Pittsburgh bullpen.

The righty is returning after breaking his foot during Grapefruit League action. "I think he threw 10 or 11 pitches," manager Derek Shelton said. "The slider was really, really good. He was one of the guys I was sitting behind the plate on and just watching the action on it; that was good to see." The 27-year-old hasn't been able to put everything together at the big league level. In 76 career innings, Holmes has struck out 77 batters in 76.1 innings but has posted a 6.01 ERA and 1.76 WHIP.

Holmes (foot) is scheduled to throw off a slope this week, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.

Holmes suffered a fractured foot early on in spring training when he was hit by a groundball. The injury forced him into a walking boot for several weeks, but the right-hander was able to keep his arm in shape by throwing from one knee. Now that the fracture is fully healed, Holmes can start the progression from a slight incline to a full mound and possibly to throwing to live batters before long.

Holmes exited Saturday's Grapefruit League against the Twins after being struck in the ankle by a ground ball, Nubyjas Wilborn of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

It was the only batter he faced before leaving the field under his own power. Holmes will be examined further over the next couple days, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him take at least a couple days off to be safe.
