Undergoes Tommy John surgery
Martin underwent Tommy John surgery Wednesday on his right elbow, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Martin was talked up as a rotation candidate for the White Sox this spring, but he got sent to Triple-A Charlotte before Opening Day and his forearm/elbow began barking after just three starts there. Given the usual recovery timetable of 14-to-16 months, the 26-year-old will likely be sidelined until well into the second half of the 2024 season.
May 10, 2023
Placed on minor-league IL
Martin was placed on the injured list Wednesday at Triple-A Charlotte with a right forearm strain, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Martin has enjoyed a nice season-opening stretch in the Charlotte rotation, delivering a 2.81 ERA with 20 strikeouts through three starts covering 16 innings. It's unclear at this point when he might be able to return to action on the farm.
Mar 23, 2023
Sent to minors
The White Sox optioned Martin to Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander has struggled with a 5.25 ERA in 12 innings of Grapefruit League action. That said, Martin did post a respectable, albeit unimpressive 4.83 ERA and provided rotation depth last season, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him rejoin the White Sox at some point in 2023.

Over biceps injury
Martin said Friday that the right biceps soreness which forced him from his final start of last season was a non-issue this offseason, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Martin took a couple weeks off of throwing after the season and then went through his normal offseason training. The right-hander said his goal is to throw 170-180 innings this season and the White Sox might need him with Mike Clevinger's status up in the air.
Oct 5, 2022
Exits with right biceps soreness
Martin was removed from Wednesday's start against the Twins in the top of the second inning due to right biceps soreness/
ANALYSIS
Martin struggled mightily to begin Wednesday's matchup, giving up nine runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out one in 1.2 innings prior to his departure. It's possible that his injury contributed to his struggles, although it's not yet clear whether the issue will impact his offseason program. The right-hander made 14 appearances (nine starts) in the majors this year and posted a 4.83 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 63.1 innings.

Picks up win Friday
Martin (3-5) allowed a run on six hits and a hit batter while striking out eight over 5.2 innings to earn the win over the Padres on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Martin limited the damage to a Josh Bell RBI single in the second inning. This was the second time in three starts since returning to the majors that Martin allowed just one run, and his eight strikeouts marked a season high. The right-hander now has a 3.65 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 47:17 K:BB through 61.2 innings across 13 appearances (eight starts). He's tentatively projected for one more start, which would be against Minnesota next week.
Sep 25, 2022
Records second quality start
Martin (2-5) took the loss against Detroit on Saturday, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out four batters over six innings.
ANALYSIS
As in his previous outing, Martin faced Detroit and lasted six innings to record a quality start. He was less sharp in this appearance, however, surrendering over twice as many hits and three runs. On a positive note, Martin rebounded nicely after giving up a two-run homer in the first inning, yielding just one more run the rest of the way. The rookie right-hander's 2-5 record is accompanied by a 3.86 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 39:17 K:BB over 56 innings.
Sep 23, 2022
Nabs another start
Martin is scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
He'll be making his second straight turn through the rotation following his call-up from Triple-A Charlotte on Sept. 17. Martin proceeded to strike out five while allowing one earned run on three hits and one walk over six innings against this same Tigers team. The 25-year-old right-hander, who owns a 3.78 ERA and 1.18 WHIP over 50 big-league innings this season, could make for an appealing streaming option in a rematch with the weak Tigers offense.
Sep 18, 2022
Strikes out five batters
Martin did not factor into the decision against Detroit on Saturday, allowing one run on three hits while striking out five and walking one over six innings.
ANALYSIS
Martin pitched well enough to earn the win Saturday, but the game would go into extra innings. The young righty did earn a quality start in the outing, his first in limited time this season. Martin may have earned another turn in the rotation as he has had back-to-back impressive outings. In his last two starts, he has given up just one earned run over 11 innings to go along with six hits, two walks and seven strikeouts. His season ERA now sits at 3.78.
Sep 17, 2022
Starting Saturday
Martin will start Saturday's game against the Tigers, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Martin was called up Saturday, and he'll immediately draw a start after Johnny Cueto (illness) was scratched from his scheduled start. Martin threw an inning at Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday, so it's possible that he's on a pitch count during Saturday's outing.
Sep 17, 2022
Called up Saturday
Martin was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Martin was sent down by the White Sox in early September, but he'll rejoin the big-league club after Michael Kopech (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday. Martin has made 10 appearances (five starts) for the White Sox this year and has posted a 4.09 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 44 innings. Kopech was slated to start Sunday against the Tigers, and it's not yet clear whether Martin will immediately take his place in the rotation since he tossed an inning at Charlotte on Thursday.
Sep 4, 2022
Heads back to Triple-A
The White Sox optioned Martin to Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Martin's demotion likely signals that the White Sox anticipate Michael Kopech (knee) will be ready to return from the 15-day injured list Wednesday when first eligible to reclaim his spot in the rotation. While making the last two turns through the rotation as a replacement for Kopech -- once as a starter and once as a bulk reliever -- Martin went 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and four strikeouts in eight innings.
Sep 3, 2022
Effective as bulk reliever
Martin allowed three hits, one walk and a hit batter while striking out two over five scoreless innings, but he did not factor in the decision Friday versus the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Martin pitched well after a rough opening inning from Joe Kelly. This was the second time in 10 appearances (five starts) that Martin has kept runs off the board. The right-hander now has a 4.09 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 30:15 K:BB through 44 innings while adding a 2-4 record. It's unclear how he'll be utilized in his next appearance, especially if Michael Kopech (knee) is ready to return when first eligible Sept. 7. If Martin stays on a typical starter's schedule, he'd line up for an appearance in Seattle next week, though it's no guarantee he'll remain in the majors that long.
Sep 2, 2022
Won't start Friday, may still pitch
Martin isn't starting Friday's game against the Twins but could be used as the bulk pitcher behind opener Joe Kelly, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The rookie right-hander was previously listed as the probable starter for Friday, but Kelly will instead open the contest. The White Sox haven't announced their pitching plans behind Kelly for Friday, but Martin could be utilized as the primary pitcher. The 25-year-old has started in five of his nine MLB outings this year and has a 4.62 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 28:14 K:BB across 39 innings.
Sep 2, 2022
Nabs another start
Martin is slated to start Friday's game against the Twins in Chicago, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
He'll be making his second straight turn through the rotation as a replacement for Michael Kopech (knee), who remains on the 15-day injured list. In his last outing Aug. 27 against the Diamondbacks, Martin was lit up for five runs (three earned) on four hits and four walks while recording two strikeouts in three innings. He'll take a 4.62 ERA and 1.31 WHIP into Friday's start, his sixth of the season with the White Sox.
Aug 28, 2022
Allows four earned runs in loss
Martin (2-4) took the loss to Arizona on Saturday, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits while striking out two and walking four over three innings.
ANALYSIS
Martin struggled through three innings Saturday, allowing four earned runs and four walks. He did not allow a home run in the contest, but walked Carson Kelly with the bases loaded. The righty also struggled with efficiency, tossing 35 of 63 pitches for strikes across three frames. Martin has completed six innings once out of five games started this season, limiting his potential for quality starts. His ERA now sits at 4.85.
Aug 27, 2022
Recalled prior to start
Martin was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte prior to Saturday's start against the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Martin hasn't made a major-league start since early August but will rejoin the big-league club after Michael Kopech (knee) was placed on the 15-day injured list this week. Martin has posted a 4.25 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 36 innings over eight appearances (four starts) in the majors this year, and it's possible that he remains in the rotation if he performs well Saturday.
Aug 24, 2022
Likely starting Saturday
White Sox manager Tony La Russa said Martin is likely to be called up to start Saturday against the Diamondbacks, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old last started in the majors in early August and earned the win after giving up one run over 5.2 innings, and it appears he'll rejoin the big-league club this weekend with Michael Kopech (knee) on the injured list. Martin has a solid 4.25 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 26:10 K:BB across 36 frames in his first taste of MLB this year, and he could stick in the rotation with another solid showing Saturday.
Aug 9, 2022
Demoted after picking up win
Martin (2-3) was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte after earning the win in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Royals. He allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts and one walk across 5.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old was called up as the 27th man for the twin bill and started the nightcap, and the only run he gave up came via a solo homer from Vinnie Pasquantino. Martin has a 4.25 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 26:10 K:BB across 36 innings this season and should remain in the mix for a promotion down the stretch whenever Chicago requires pitching depth.
Aug 9, 2022
Starting Game 2 of twin bill
The White Sox recalled Martin from Triple-A Charlotte and will have start the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader in Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
Chicago is designating Martin as its 27th man for the twin bill, which means he'll head back to Charlotte immediately after the spot start. Martin has previously made seven appearances and three starts for the White Sox this season, turning in a 4.75 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 23:9 K:BB across 30.1 innings in those outings.
Aug 2, 2022
Sent back to Triple-A
Martin was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Martin made one appearance after being recalled July 29, but he will head back to the minors for the time being. Having already been called up several times already this season, Martin could be back with the big club before the campaign comes to a close.
Jul 29, 2022
Recalled from Triple-A
Martin was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Martin has made six appearances (three starts) for the White Sox this year, posting a 4.67 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 27 innings. Although he's served exclusively as a starter in the minors this year, he should serve as a multi-inning option out of the big-league bullpen after Parker Markel was outrighted to Charlotte on Friday.
Jul 23, 2022
Optioned to Triple-A
Martin was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte following Saturday's doubleheader against the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Martin operated as the 27th man for the White Sox on Saturday, failing to pitch in either contest before being returned to Charlotte. He'll remain a top option for a potential call-up moving forward.
Jul 23, 2022
Called up as 27th man
Martin was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte to serve as the 27th man during Saturday's doubleheader against the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Martin served as the 27th man for a doubleheader last week in which he took on a starting role, but he'll be available as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen during Saturday's twin bill. The right-hander has posted a 4.67 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 27 innings over six appearances (three starts) in the majors this year.
Jul 13, 2022
Demoted after taking loss
Martin (1-3) was charged with the loss in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader at Cleveland after giving up four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks over six innings. He was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte after the twin bill.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander served as the 27th man for the doubleheader and kept the White Sox within striking distance during the matinee, but he received minimal offensive support. Martin has a 4.67 ERA across 27 big-league innings this year and should remain in the mix as a potential spot starter later in the season.
Jul 12, 2022
Called up, starting Game 1
Martin was called up from Triple-A Charlotte and is starting Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Martin will operate as the team's 27th man Tuesday, drawing his third major-league start this season. The 25-year-old has produced a 4.29 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with 17 strikeouts over 21 innings across five appearances with the White Sox. Martin will likely be returned to Triple-A following Tuesday's contests.
Jul 9, 2022
Expected to draw start next week
Martin is expected to start in one of the two games during Tuesday's doubleheader against the Guardians, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Martin was sent to Triple-A Charlotte on June 22 and has posted a 2.84 ERA and 0.87 WHIP in 12.2 innings over three minor-league appearances since then. The right-hander last pitched Wednesday, so he should be fully rested if he's ultimately called up to start during Tuesday's twin bill.
Jun 22, 2022
Optioned to Triple-A
Martin was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Martin will return to Triple-A after being recalled June 14. He appeared in two games while in the big leagues, surrendering three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three over 5.2 innings. The move was made in correspondence with Matt Foster's return from the bereavement list Wednesday. Martin will remain a top option for another call up moving forward.
Jun 14, 2022
Brought back from Triple-A
The White Sox recalled Martin from Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Since Chicago placed Liam Hendriks (forearm) on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move, Martin is eligible to rejoin the big club just two days after being optioned to Triple-A. Martin has started in two of his three appearances with the White Sox, but unless Michael Kopech (knee) ends up requiring a trip to the IL, the rookie right-hander is likely to work out of the bullpen during his upcoming stint in the majors.
Jun 12, 2022
Optioned to Triple-A
Martin was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
He has done a serviceable job filling in for injured starters, logging a 4.11 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 14 strikeouts in 15.1 innings across three starts. Perhaps most impressively, Martin has gone at least five innings in all three starts. He could be back up the next time Chicago needs a spot starter.
Jun 11, 2022
Strikes out six
Martin allowed two runs on three hits and a walk over five innings during Friday's win over Texas. He recorded six strikeouts and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Reynaldo Lopez fired a pair of shutout frames before turning the ball over to Martin to begin the third inning. The 25-year-old coughed up a solo home run in each of the fifth and sixth innings to Nathaniel Lowe and Adolis Garcia, respectively. Martin is now sporting a 4.11 ERA through 15.1 MLB frames this season. He could be headed back to Triple-A Charlotte soon as Lance Lynn (knee) is expected to join the rotation next week.
Jun 10, 2022
Pitching behind opener
Martin will pitch behind opener Reynaldo Lopez against the Rangers on Friday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The decision at least slightly improves Martin's fantasy appeal, as he'll skip the Rangers' best bats the first time through the order and won't have to pitch five innings to be eligible for a win. That's not to say he has all that much appeal even after that small boost, however, as the unheralded rookie and 2018 14-round pick owns a modest 4.35 ERA and 17.4 percent strikeout rate through two major-league starts after posting a 4.71 ERA and 19.5 percent strikeout rate in four Triple-A outings.
Jun 3, 2022
Struggles early in second start
Martin (0-2) took the loss Friday versus the Rays, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks with one strikeout in 5.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Vince Velasquez (groin) went on the injured list Friday, and Martin was called up from Triple-A Charlotte to make the start. All four of the runs on his line came in the first inning, which was capped off by a two-run home run from Randy Arozarena. In 10.1 big-league innings this year, Martin has allowed five runs, 10 hits and four walks with eight strikeouts. He tentatively lines up for a difficult home start versus the Dodgers next week if he stays in the rotation throughout Velasquez's absence.
Jun 3, 2022
Recalled, starting Friday
Martin was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte and is starting Friday against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Martin made his major-league debut May 17 against the Royals and struck out seven while allowing just one run over five innings. Vince Velasquez (groin) was listed as Friday's scheduled starter before being placed on the 15-day injured list, and it seems likely that Martin will remain in the rotation while Velasquez is sidelined.
May 28, 2022
Candidate for rotation spot
General manager Rick Hahn said Saturday that Martin could join the White Sox's rotation after Dallas Keuchel was designated for assignment, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander made his major-league debut against the Royals on May 17, and he allowed a run on five hits and a walk while striking out seven in five innings to take the loss. Although he was sent down following the start, both Martin and Vince Velasquez are in the mix to take Keuchel's spot in the White Sox's rotation. Even if Martin joins the major-league rotation next week, he'll likely return to the minors or take on a bullpen role once Lance Lynn (knee) is cleared to return.
May 18, 2022
Sent down Wednesday
Martin was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander made his major-league debut as the starter in Tuesday's matchup against the Royals, and he took the unlucky loss while allowing a run on five hits and a walk while striking out seven in five innings. The 25-year-old will head back to the minors after Lucas Giolito (illness) was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list, but Martin should be a candidate to rejoin the White Sox as a spot starter at some point.
May 18, 2022
Fans seven in tough loss Tuesday
Martin (0-1) took the loss in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Royals, allowing one run on five hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
Making his big-league debut, Martin kept Kansas City mostly in check over 91 pitches (64 strikes), but he got out-dueled by Brady Singer and had no margin for error. There doesn't appear to be any room for the 25-year-old in the Chicago rotation on a full-time basis with Johnny Cueto just added to the mix, but Martin has earned another callup the next time the White Sox need another arm.
