As the Orioles' American League Division Series shifts to Texas for Game 3 on Tuesday, Bautista traveled with the team and had his procedure performed by the Rangers' team physician, Dr. Keith Meister, who is also one of the foremost orthopedic surgeons for elbow reconstructions. A first-time All-Star in 2023, Bautista had arguably emerged as MLB's top closer before throwing his last pitch in late August, as he had compiled a 1.48 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 110:26 K:BB to go with 33 saves in 39 chances over 61 innings. He's expected to remain out through the entire 2024 season before returning as a full participant for spring training in 2025 if he endures no setbacks in his recovery from surgery.

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde had revealed previously that Bautista would be throwing, and now we know he faced hitters for the first time since he was diagnosed with a partially torn UCL in his right elbow a month ago. Bautista threw fastballs and off-speed pitches in the session and appeared to come out of it with no issues. The clock is ticking on Bautista's potential return before the end of the season, but it would appear he's got a shot to be available before the end of this week or, perhaps more likely, for the postseason.

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told Dani Wexelman of MLB Network Radio that Bautista (elbow) will throw again Tuesday.

"He's feeling good," Hyde said. "He's going to throw today, we're just monitoring it right now. I'm know we're running out of time a little bit. That's the only update I can give. We'll see how he is tomorrow, if he throws well today we'll continue to progress it. But he hasn't thrown enough, he's had about a month off. We only have six games left...depending on how he feels, there is an injury in there, we wanna be smart." Hyde doesn't appear to be terribly optimistic that Bautista could return before the end of the regular season, although the reliever has seemingly already progressed more quickly than expected from his UCL tear so nothing can be ruled out. Ultimately, the Orioles' main goal figures to be getting Bautista back for the postseason, but there remains work to be done.

It was his first mound workout since he was diagnosed three weeks ago with a partial tear of the UCL in his right elbow. Additionally, Elias noted that surgery isn't necessarily off the table for Bautista, but the Orioles are likely to wait until the offseason before exploring any potential procedure.

There has been some caginess around Bautista's elbow injury -- initial word was that it involved his ulnar collateral ligament -- but he seems to be taking steps forward and hasn't been ruled out for a return this year. "We're going to see how he feels," Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said after Friday's workout. "We are just kind of monitoring it day-to-day." Yennier Cano and Shintaro Fujinami have been getting the majority of the save chances since Bautista landed on the injured list Aug. 26.

Once some of the elbow inflammation clears up, Bautista could get more tests that may shed more light on the extent of his injury. Regardless, Bautista appears safe to rule out for returning from the IL when first eligible next weekend, and even if he's able to steer clear of elbow surgery, he won't necessarily be a lock to pitch again in 2023.

Bautista was one strike away from putting the game on ice but evidently tweaked something while delivering a 102.3 mph fastball to Michael Toglia. He was visited by the trainer before exiting the field. Daniel Coulombe then needed just one pitch to strike out Toglia and close out an Orioles win. Bautista picked up the save Thursday, delivering a perfect ninth inning to close out a 5-3 win over the Blue Jays.

Bautista set the Blue Jays down in order in the ninth inning Thursday to earn his 33rd save, tying him for second most in the league. The 28-year-old Bautista extended his scoreless streak to six innings, lowering his ERA to a pristine 1.49 with a 0.93 WHIP and 109:26 K:BB across 60.1 frames this season.

Bautista (8-2) struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the extra-inning win over the Athletics on Saturday.

Bautista needed just nine pitches to set the Athletics down in order in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Orioles' offense exploded for five runs in the top of the 10th. However, the All-Star closer was able to get Machado to ground into a double play, ending the threat and giving Bautista his AL-best 32nd save. He's had an uncharacteristically tough time of late, though, allowing five runs on six hits and posting a 6:5 K:BB over his past 4.2 innings covering four appearances.

Bautista (7-2) allowed a hit and struck out four over two scoreless innings to earn the extra-inning win Saturday over the Mariners.

Offense was at a premium Saturday, but Bautista made sure the Mariners saw none of it. He kept the game scoreless in the ninth inning and then protected a 1-0 lead in the 10th to pick up the win. Bautista allowed five runs over 1.2 innings across his last two appearances, both against Houston, but prior to that shaky stretch, he'd posted a 17-inning scoreless streak. Even with the recent struggles, he's at a 1.60 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 108:24 K:BB and 31 saves in 37 chances through 56.1 innings this season as one of the best relievers in baseball.

Bautista picked up the save in Thursday's 5-4 win over the Astros, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over one inning.

Bautista entered the game with a two-run lead in the ninth and got Jake Meyers to fly out in the first at-bat before struggling through the rest of the inning. Bautista (6-2) allowed four runs on three hits and a walk while striking out two over two-thirds of an inning to take the loss and a blown save Tuesday versus the Astros.

Bautista had converted 10 straight save chances and had a 17-inning scoreless streak dating back to June. Bautista entered with a runner on first and two outs in the eighth inning, walking Brandon Lowe before striking out Taylor Walls to end the frame. The 27-year-old Bautista would issue two more free passes to lead off the ninth but coaxed a double play off the bat of Yandy Diaz to get out of trouble. Though Bautista has had an up-and-down year, nobody seems to be pressing him for the Orioles' closing job.

Bautista's starting to earn more high-leverage work -- this was his second straight appearance with a save. He extended his scoreless streak to six innings across his last six appearances. The right-hander has a 1.93 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB across 14 innings this season, with two saves, a hold and a 0-1 record. Jorge Lopez (bereavement) is likely to be back soon, so Bautista may have to settle for a setup role, though he could still pitch his way into more save chances.

After Dillon Tate allowed a solo home run and two more batters to reach base, Bautista was called upon to face Tyler O'Neill with two outs in the ninth inning. He proceeded to strike him out on five pitches, earning his first career save. With his ability to hit triple-digits with his fastball, the 26-year-old could be in line for more high-leverage appearances moving forward. Bautista has produced a 2.13 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with 16 strikeouts over 12.2 innings this season.

Bautista allowed one hit and struck out two over 1.2 scoreless innings in Monday's 2-1 loss to the Twins.

This was the first time in 2022 that Bautista's recorded five outs. He's only allowed runs in two of his 10 appearances, pitching to a solid 2.70 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB across 10 innings. Bautista has picked up a hold and an 0-1 record as a middle-innings option for manager Brandon Hyde.

Bautista (0-1) took the loss Tuesday versus the Brewers, allowing a run on two hits with two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning.

Bautista pitched 1.1 scoreless innings Sunday versus the Rays in his major-league debut, but he couldn't replicate the effort Tuesday. He allowed a Willy Adames double in the seventh inning, and Cionel Perez allowed the inherited runner to score on Andrew McCutchen's single. Bautista is expected to begin in a low-leverage role out of the bullpen, though he has limited experience as a closer in the minors -- he racked up 11 saves in 40 appearances across three levels last year.

Bautista has made the Orioles' Opening Day roster, Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports.

Bautista was added to the 40-man roster in November to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, and he'll be available to make his major-league debut to begin the season after he posted a 4.91 ERA, 7:5 K:BB and 1.91 WHIP in 3.2 innings across four appearances this spring. The Orioles recently traded Cole Sulser and Tanner Scott to the Marlins, so Bautista should have a chance to earn high-leverage opportunities if he pitches well early in his major-league career.
