Tommy John surgery completed
Bautista (elbow) underwent successful Tommy John surgery in Arlington, Texas on Monday.
ANALYSIS
As the Orioles' American League Division Series shifts to Texas for Game 3 on Tuesday, Bautista traveled with the team and had his procedure performed by the Rangers' team physician, Dr. Keith Meister, who is also one of the foremost orthopedic surgeons for elbow reconstructions. A first-time All-Star in 2023, Bautista had arguably emerged as MLB's top closer before throwing his last pitch in late August, as he had compiled a 1.48 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 110:26 K:BB to go with 33 saves in 39 chances over 61 innings. He's expected to remain out through the entire 2024 season before returning as a full participant for spring training in 2025 if he endures no setbacks in his recovery from surgery.

Needs Tommy John surgery
Bautista (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery in October, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista's 1.48 ERA, 33 saves and 46.4 percent strikeout rate helped the Orioles get back to the playoffs this season, but he won't get to be part of the roster as they push to make their first World Series since 1983. Tommy John surgery seemed possible when Bautista was first diagnosed with a UCL injury back in late August, but the fact that he quickly resumed throwing and had recently advanced to a 25-pitch simulated game seemed to indicate that he'd avoided serious injury. Instead, he'll miss not only this year's playoffs but the entirety of next season as well. Yennier Cano will continue handling closer duties in his absence.

Throws simulated game
Bautista (elbow) threw a 25-pitch simulated game Tuesday, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde had revealed previously that Bautista would be throwing, and now we know he faced hitters for the first time since he was diagnosed with a partially torn UCL in his right elbow a month ago. Bautista threw fastballs and off-speed pitches in the session and appeared to come out of it with no issues. The clock is ticking on Bautista's potential return before the end of the season, but it would appear he's got a shot to be available before the end of this week or, perhaps more likely, for the postseason.

Will throw again Tuesday
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told Dani Wexelman of MLB Network Radio that Bautista (elbow) will throw again Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
"He's feeling good," Hyde said. "He's going to throw today, we're just monitoring it right now. I'm know we're running out of time a little bit. That's the only update I can give. We'll see how he is tomorrow, if he throws well today we'll continue to progress it. But he hasn't thrown enough, he's had about a month off. We only have six games left...depending on how he feels, there is an injury in there, we wanna be smart." Hyde doesn't appear to be terribly optimistic that Bautista could return before the end of the regular season, although the reliever has seemingly already progressed more quickly than expected from his UCL tear so nothing can be ruled out. Ultimately, the Orioles' main goal figures to be getting Bautista back for the postseason, but there remains work to be done.

Advances to mound work
Bautista (elbow) threw a bullpen session Sunday in Baltimore, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
It was his first mound workout since he was diagnosed three weeks ago with a partial tear of the UCL in his right elbow. Bautista appeared to be using his entire arsenal, per Ruiz, which is another encouraging development as he aims to return to the Orioles' active roster prior to the end of the regular season. Yennier Cano has been filling in as the O's primary closer.
Sep 15, 2023
Advances to long-toss
Bautista (elbow) threw long-toss Friday in Baltimore, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista has been sidelined since late August due to a partial tear of the UCL in his right elbow, but he's on a steady throwing progression and is aiming to return at some point before the end of the regular season. He'll probably have to advance to mound work within the next week to achieve that goal. Yennier Cano is currently positioned as the Orioles' primary closer.

Chance to pitch again in '23
General manager Mike Elias confirmed Monday that Bautista (elbow) is dealing with a partial tear of his UCL, but the Orioles maintain hope that the right-hander will be able to pitch again in 2023, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Though the Orioles plan to take a conservative approach with Bautista's recovery from the acute ligament injury, he's already resumed playing catch and hasn't required any platelet-rich plasma injections for his right elbow, per Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun. Elias suggested that the Orioles will continue to see how Bautista's elbow responds as the All-Star closer gradually ramps up the intensity of his throwing, but the 28-year-old is without a clear target date to return from the 15-day injured list. Additionally, Elias noted that surgery isn't necessarily off the table for Bautista, but the Orioles are likely to wait until the offseason before exploring any potential procedure.

Resumes playing catch
Bautista (elbow) played catch for the second time Friday, Danielle Allentuck of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
ANALYSIS
There has been some caginess around Bautista's elbow injury -- initial word was that it involved his ulnar collateral ligament -- but he seems to be taking steps forward and hasn't been ruled out for a return this year. "We're going to see how he feels," Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said after Friday's workout. "We are just kind of monitoring it day-to-day." Yennier Cano and Shintaro Fujinami have been getting the majority of the save chances since Bautista landed on the injured list Aug. 26.

Gets MRI, could need more tests
Manager Brandon Hyde said Sunday that Bautista has received an MRI on his injured right elbow, but the Orioles will wait for the inflammation in the pitcher's arm to subside before a decision is made on his next steps, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The standout closer was placed on the 15-day IL on Aug. 26 with what the Orioles described as a UCL injury, but the severity of the issue still hasn't been disclosed. Once some of the elbow inflammation clears up, Bautista could get more tests that may shed more light on the extent of his injury. Regardless, Bautista appears safe to rule out for returning from the IL when first eligible next weekend, and even if he's able to steer clear of elbow surgery, he won't necessarily be a lock to pitch again in 2023.

Out with UCL injury
Bautista was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a UCL injury, Danielle Allentuck of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista left his outing Friday against the Rockies with right arm discomfort, and it looks like the injury is potentially a serious one. The Orioles haven't specified an exact diagnosis or timeline for Bautista, but Tommy John surgery would seem to be a possibility given that he's dealing with UCL troubles. Even a lesser injury would still be a huge blow to the Orioles, as Bautista has been the best reliever in baseball this season, riding a 46.4 percent strikeout rate to a 1.48 ERA and 33 saves. Yennier Cano is likely to step into the ninth inning in his absence.
Aug 25, 2023
Undergoing tests on sore arm
Bautista is undergoing tests after exiting Friday's appearance against the Rockies due to right arm discomfort, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista was just one strike away from a save when he was lifted from the outing after delivering a 102.3 mph fastball. Orioles manager Brandon Hyde declined to go into more specifics when asked about the exact nature of the righty's injury, adding only that "when the best closer in the game leaves the game, it's never a good feeling." Yennier Cano would be the obvious choice to step in as Baltimore's closer should Bautista need to miss time. Danny Coulombe got a one-out save in relief of Bautista on Friday and could also be in the mix.
Aug 25, 2023
Leaves save chance with injury
Bautista was removed from a save appearance versus the Rockies on Friday with an undisclosed injury, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista was one strike away from putting the game on ice but evidently tweaked something while delivering a 102.3 mph fastball to Michael Toglia. He was visited by the trainer before exiting the field. Daniel Coulombe then needed just one pitch to strike out Toglia and close out an Orioles win. More information should be available on Bautista's status shortly.

Notches 33rd save
Bautista picked up the save Thursday, delivering a perfect ninth inning to close out a 5-3 win over the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Bautista set the Blue Jays down in order in the ninth inning Thursday to earn his 33rd save, tying him for second most in the league. The 28-year-old Bautista extended his scoreless streak to six innings, lowering his ERA to a pristine 1.49 with a 0.93 WHIP and 109:26 K:BB across 60.1 frames this season.
Aug 20, 2023
Collects eighth win
Bautista (8-2) struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the extra-inning win over the Athletics on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Bautista needed just nine pitches to set the Athletics down in order in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Orioles' offense exploded for five runs in the top of the 10th. Aside from his five runs allowed against Houston over two appearances earlier this month, Bautista has been virtually untouchable for much of the last two months. He's 32-for-38 in save chances with a 1.54 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 109:26 K:BB through 58.1 innings overall. Given that this was his first outing since Monday, Bautista should be available if another save chance arises Sunday.
Aug 15, 2023
Walks two but nabs save
Bautista earned a save over the Padres on Monday, allowing two walks in a hitless and scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
Bautista didn't make things easy on himself, as he threw only 10 of 21 pitches for strikes and issued a pair of one-out walks to bringing the tying run to the plate in the form of Manny Machado. However, the All-Star closer was able to get Machado to ground into a double play, ending the threat and giving Bautista his AL-best 32nd save. He's had an uncharacteristically tough time of late, though, allowing five runs on six hits and posting a 6:5 K:BB over his past 4.2 innings covering four appearances.
Aug 13, 2023
Picks up extra-inning win
Bautista (7-2) allowed a hit and struck out four over two scoreless innings to earn the extra-inning win Saturday over the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Offense was at a premium Saturday, but Bautista made sure the Mariners saw none of it. He kept the game scoreless in the ninth inning and then protected a 1-0 lead in the 10th to pick up the win. Bautista allowed five runs over 1.2 innings across his last two appearances, both against Houston, but prior to that shaky stretch, he'd posted a 17-inning scoreless streak. Even with the recent struggles, he's at a 1.60 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 108:24 K:BB and 31 saves in 37 chances through 56.1 innings this season as one of the best relievers in baseball.
Aug 11, 2023
Struggles his way to 31st save
Bautista picked up the save in Thursday's 5-4 win over the Astros, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over one inning.
ANALYSIS
Bautista entered the game with a two-run lead in the ninth and got Jake Meyers to fly out in the first at-bat before struggling through the rest of the inning. With one out, the right-handed reliever surrendered a double to Jose Altuve and then proceeded to walk two of the next three batters, which led to one run coming across for Houston on a Yainer Diaz single. Bautista was still able to escape with his 31st save of the season, though he's now allowed runs in back-to-back appearances after previously not allowing a run since June 24. His ERA currently sits at 16.88 in the month of August (three appearances).
Aug 9, 2023
Rare misstep versus Houston
Bautista (6-2) allowed four runs on three hits and a walk while striking out two over two-thirds of an inning to take the loss and a blown save Tuesday versus the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Bautista had converted 10 straight save chances and had a 17-inning scoreless streak dating back to June. He needed 30 pitches to get his two outs, but he gave up a grand slam to Kyle Tucker to blow the save while allowing multiple runs for the first time since April 1. Bautista still has a 1.52 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 104:22 K:BB with 30 saves in 36 chances through 53.1 innings this year. He's earned the benefit of the doubt that this is one bad outing and not the beginning of a late-season collapse.
Aug 6, 2023
Earns 30th save
Bautista picked up the save in Sunday's 2-0 win over the Mets. He allowed one hit while striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
A lead-off double was the only blemish for Bautista, who is compiling one of the greatest single-season efforts for a reliever of all time. Bautista not only has a 102:21 K:BB but has also struck out more than two times the total number of baserunners he's allowed. He hasn't allowed an earned run over his past 14 outings and his 0.85 ERA is best among all pitchers with at least 30 innings.
Jul 31, 2023
Secures five-out save
Bautista walked two batters over 1.2 scoreless innings Monday, striking out three and earning a save over the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS

His season ERA is down to 0.87 with a 101:21 K:BB across 51.2 innings. Bautista hasn't given up an earned run since his last blown save June 24.
Jul 29, 2023
Snags win Friday
Bautista (6-1) struck out two in a perfect inning to earn the win Friday over the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Offense was at a premium after a rain delay Friday, with the first run being Anthony Santander's walk-off solo shot in the bottom of the ninth inning. Bautista had pitched the top of the ninth to keep the game scoreless. The closer has an active 14.1-inning scoreless streak, during which he's given up just six hits with a 27:2 K:BB. For the season, Bautista is at a 0.90 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 98:19 K:BB through 50 innings while closing out games for the American League's top team. He's added 28 saves in 33 chances.
Jul 24, 2023
Converts 28th save
Bautista pitched a scoreless ninth while allowing two hits and striking out the side to pick up another save Sunday against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Bautista worked his way through some trouble after allowing two base hits to bring the winning run to the plate but was able to strike out Wander Franco to end the game. Bautista sits atop the American League with 28 saves and is just two behind league leader Camilo Doval. He's been as dominant as they come and now holds a sparkling 0.92 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 96:19 K:BB in 49 innings.

Bautista struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Saturday to record his 25th save of the season during Saturday's 6-5 win over the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander failed to fan multiple batters for the first time since June 18, but he remained dominant as he topped out at 101.6 mph with his fastball and needed only 10 pitches (eight strikes) to breeze through the heart of Miami's order. Bautista has been scored upon only once in his last 18 appearances, and the 28-year-old closer has a minuscule 1.02 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 87:19 K:BB through 44 innings on the season.

ANALYSIS
Bautista entered with a runner on first and two outs in the eighth inning, walking Brandon Lowe before striking out Taylor Walls to end the frame. Bautista improves to 8-for-11 in save opportunities with a 1.59 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 30:13 K:BB over 17 innings. While his 14.7 percent walk rate leaves room for improvement, Bautista has certainly made up for it with a 42.6 percent strikeout rate.

Blows save in 10th inning
Bautista allowed an unearned run on one walk and struck out one in one inning, taking a blown save in Sunday's 3-2 extra-innings loss to Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Bautista couldn't protect a one-run lead in the 10th inning, giving up a run on a wild pitch. He's allowed a run in consecutive appearances for the first time since his first two outings of the year. Sunday's mishap won't show up in his ERA, which stands at 1.72 despite a 1.28 WHIP and 29:10 K:BB through 15.2 innings this season. He's now 7-for-10 in save chances.
Apr 30, 2023
Nails down seventh save
Bautista recorded his seventh save of the season in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Tigers, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
After seeing his control waver Thursday when he walked three batters and needed 31 pitches to secure his sixth save, Bautista's seventh was a relative breeze as he needed only 10 pitches to carve up Detroit's 6-7-8 hitters. The right-hander is showing he was no one-year wonder after breaking out in 2022, and through 13.2 innings this season he sports a 1.32 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and dominant 43.1 percent strikeout rate.

Narrowly avoids blow-up
Bautista picked up the save in Thursday's 7-4 victory over Detroit. He allowed three walks while striking out three over one inning.
ANALYSIS
Bautista worked his way out of a one-out, bases-loaded situation Thursday, striking out Jonathan Schoop and Jake Rogers to pick up the save after walking three batters. He narrowly avoided his third blown save on the season but has been strong outside of the pair of blown saves, having only allowed two earned runs on the season. Though Bautista has had an up-and-down year, nobody seems to be pressing him for the Orioles' closing job.
Apr 22, 2023
Blows save, gets win
Bautista (2-1) blew a save but earned the win in Friday's 2-1 win over the Tigers. He allowed a run on two hits and struck out one without walking a batter in one inning.
ANALYSIS
With the run allowed, Bautista's seven-inning scoreless streak came to an end. He's now 5-for-7 in save chances this season after allowing the tying run in the top of the ninth inning, only for the Orioles to produce a walkoff win a half-inning later. The closer has a 1.86 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 17:3 K:BB through 9.2 innings this season.
Apr 19, 2023
Grabs fifth save
Bautista picked up the save Tuesday against Washington, allowing one hit in a scoreless ninth inning to secure a 1-0 win.
ANALYSIS
Bautista closed out the Orioles' shutout, allowing just a two-out single to Luis Garcia before picking up his fifth save. Bautista hasn't allowed an earned run since Opening Day as he lowers his ERA to 1.04. He's 1-1 with 16:3 K:BB and a 1.04 WHIP through 8.2 innings this season.
Apr 15, 2023
Secures fourth save
Bautista picked up the save in Friday's 6-3 victory over the White Sox, allowing one walk and striking out three during a scoreless ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
Bautista came on in the ninth with a three-run lead and struck out Yasmani Grandal and Lenyn Sosa before walking Oscar Colas. The right-hander ended the game and earned his fourth save by striking out Elvis Andrus. Through seven appearances, Bautista holds an impressive 15:3 K:BB and a 1.35 ERA.
Apr 14, 2023
Collects first win
Bautista (1-1) struck out two in a perfect inning to earn the win Thursday over the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Bautista kept the game tied at 7-7 in the top of the ninth inning, and Adley Rutschman delivered a walkoff solo home run in the bottom of the frame. This was Bautista's fourth straight scoreless outing after he opened the year allowing four runs (one earned) over his first 1.2 innings. He's 3-for-4 in save chances with a 12:2 K:BB, 1.59 ERA and 1.06 WHIP through 5.2 innings overall.
Apr 7, 2023
Nails down third save
Bautista walked out and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to record his third save of the season in a 7-6 win over the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
The big right-hander made things interesting, as Aaron Judge stole second and went to third on a wild pitch after his two-out walk, but Bautista got Anthony Rizzo to fly out to end the game. The O's closer got a late start to his spring to make sure his shoulder and knee were healthy, but it seems the plan worked as Bautista has a 7:2 K:BB through his first 3.2 innings in 2023.
Apr 3, 2023
Notches second save
Bautista struck out two batters and earned a save with a perfect inning against Texas on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Bautista slammed the door about as fast as possible, needing just seven pitches to finish off the 2-0 victory. He's already picked up two saves this season with a blown chance sandwiched in between. After taking a loss Saturday against Boston, he was thrown right back into the ninth-inning role Monday. Bautista threw three splitters against the Rangers and each one forced a swinging strike.
Apr 1, 2023
Blows save after error
Bautista allowed two unearned runs and picked up a loss and a blown save Saturday against the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Bautista should have picked up his second save of the season, but Ryan McKenna dropped a flyball with two outs, and Adam Duvall took the right-hander deep to give Boston the victory and Bautista his first loss and blown save of the young season. It's disappointing for managers who roster the hard-throwing 27-year-old to pick up the loss and no save, but the runs being unearned won't hurt his ERA.
Mar 30, 2023
Picks up first save
Bautista picked up the save in Thursday's 10-9 victory over the Red Sox, allowing two runs (one earned) off two hits and a walk while striking out two in the ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
Bautista ran into a bit of trouble in the ninth, allowing the first two batters to reach base and eventually faced the winning run at the plate, but struck out Adam Duvall to secure the win for Baltimore. Coming off a stellar 2022 campaign and an equally-strong spring, Bautista projects to be among the best fantasy closers in 2023.
Mar 19, 2023
Will pitch Monday vs. PHI
Bautista will pitch Monday against the Phillies in a Grapefruit League game, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista will follow starter Kyle Bradish at some point in the contest. The right-hander got off to a late start in spring action because of shoulder and knee troubles, but he showed off his impressive fastball in his spring debut earlier in the week, and looks ready to roll for the start of the season.
Mar 14, 2023
Fans a pair in spring debut
Bautista (shoulder/knee) struck out two over a perfect inning Tuesday versus the Pirates in his Grapefruit League debut.
ANALYSIS
Bautista touched 99 mph on the radar gun, per Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun. He'll make another appearance Friday and an additional 2-3 after that in preparation of Opening Day. The Orioles slow-played Bautista this spring after last year's shoulder and knee issues, but those injuries no longer appear to be of concern.
Mar 13, 2023
Cleared for spring debut
Bautista (shoulder/knee) will make his Grapefruit League debut Tuesday against the Pirates, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista and the Orioles had been eyeing Thursday for his spring debut, but that timeline was apparently moved up a couple days. It's a good sign that Bautista's shoulder and knee aren't a concern anymore, which matches reports of how his bullpens and live batting practice sessions have looked. "The Mountain" is on track to be ready to roll for the O's on Opening Day.
Mar 11, 2023
Targeting Thursday for spring debut
Bautista (shoulder/knee) is aiming to make his Grapefruit League debut Thursday versus the Blue Jays, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista is expected to get in at least one live batting practice session before he is ready for game action. He's been throwing bullpens for the last two weeks after battling shoulder and knee soreness early in the spring. Despite debuting late in the spring, the closer is still on track to be ready for Opening Day.
Mar 8, 2023
Advancing to live work next week
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Wednesday that Bautista (shoulder/knee) is on track to throw live batting practice next week, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old has yet to make his spring debut while battling shoulder and knee soreness, but he's been gradually ramping up through bullpen sessions over the past two weeks and should be ready to take the next meaningful step forward in his buildup process within the next few days. Assuming Bautista is able to get in an appearance or two in a Grapefruit League game or minor-league game on the back fields at some point before spring training ends, he should be ready to handle closing duties for the Orioles by the time Opening Day arrives.
Mar 1, 2023
Continues with bullpen sessions
Bautista (shoulder) felt good after throwing a bullpen session Wednesday, Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old continues upping his intensity on the mound and is scheduled for another bullpen session Saturday. It's unclear when Bautista will be cleared for game action, but he appears to be close to throwing against live hitters.
Feb 26, 2023
Completes bullpen session
Manager Brandon Hyde said Bautista (shoulder/knee) bounced back well after Saturday's bullpen session, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander upped his intensity to about 80-to-85 percent for Saturday's session and should continue ramping things up this week. Assuming Bautista is able to pitch at full effort in the near future, it shouldn't take long for him to advance to facing live batters.
Feb 24, 2023
To up bullpen effort level Sat.
Bautista (shoulder/knee) will throw another bullpen session Saturday and will up his effort level to around 80-85 percent, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista threw a less intense bullpen session Tuesday and will now ramp things up a bit more this weekend. The Orioles have elected to proceed cautiously with their closer this spring after he dealt with shoulder and knee soreness late last season. It's not clear when Bautista might be cleared for Grapefruit League action.
Feb 21, 2023
Throws bullpen session
Bautista (shoulder/knee) threw a bullpen session without issue Tuesday, Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner reports.
ANALYSIS
"I felt really good the entire time, I feel healthy," Bautista said through a translator after the throwing session. The big reliever is being eased into action this spring after ending last season with shoulder and knee issues, but this was a nice step. The hope remains that Bautista will be ready for Opening Day, although it's not a given.
Feb 20, 2023
Bullpen session planned for Tuesday
Bautista (shoulder/knee) said that he expects to throw another bullpen session Tuesday at approximately 75-to-80 percent intensity, Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista is gradually building back up from left knee soreness and right shoulder soreness, injuries that both affected him late in the 2022 season. Despite the fact that the Orioles are taking a deliberate approach with him this spring and plan to hold the 27-year-old out of Grapefruit League games until around mid-March, Bautista still appears to be trending toward being ready to go for Opening Day. If Bautista doesn't progress as anticipated and needs to open the season on the injured list, however, manager Brandon Hyde mentioned Cionel Perez and Bryan Baker as candidates to get opportunities early on to close games, according to Jake Rill of MLB.com.
Feb 18, 2023
Targeting games in mid-March
Bautista (knee/shoulder) is expected to be game-ready by mid-March, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista's breakout 2022 campaign saw him deal with both knee soreness and arm fatigue in September. Neither issue sounded major at the time, but the fact that he came into camp with both problems still lingering was discouraging. While the injuries add risk to his profile this spring, it's possible they don't wind up costing him any game time, as he can still be ramped up by Opening Day if he gets the chance to appear in four or five Grapefruit League contests.
Feb 16, 2023
Slowed by knee, shoulder injuries
Bautista will be delayed this spring while recovering from knee and shoulder injuries, Dan Connolly of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista ended last season on the injured list with left knee soreness. He also missed a little time in September with what the Orioles referred to at the time simply as arm fatigue, but it's fair to assume now that it was shoulder related. The Orioles expect Bautista to pitch in some Grapefruit League games and think he has a chance to be ready for Opening Day, but this is certainly not the news you want to hear at the beginning of camp. With Dillon Tate (elbow) also sidelined, Mychal Givens might see some save chances if Bautista misses time.
Oct 3, 2022
Shifts to IL
The Orioles placed Bautista (knee) on the 15-day injured list Monday.
ANALYSIS
Bautista's move to the IL came just minutes after the rookie would be shut down for the remainder of the season due to left knee discomfort. The 27-year-old should be fully recovered from the injury well in advance of spring training and will be the odds-on favorite to open the 2023 campaign as the Orioles' closer, barring the addition of some veteran competition over the weekend. Bautista finished his first season in the big leagues with 15 saves in 17 chances to go with a 2.19 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 88 strikeouts over 65.2 innings.
Oct 3, 2022
Shut down for season
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde confirmed Monday that Bautista (knee) won't be available for the team's final three games of the season, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista has been tending to left knee discomfort since his latest relief appearance Friday against the Yankees, and with the Orioles having recently been eliminated from playoff contention, Hyde won't ask his closer to pitch at less-than-optimal health. The injury is only a minor blemish on what was a spectacular rookie campaign for the 27-year-old, who converted 15 saves and gathered 14 holds while submitting a 2.19 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 88:23 K:BB across 65.2 innings. Fortunately for Bautista, all tests on his knee came back clean, so he should be in store for a relatively normal offseason, according to Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
Oct 2, 2022
Still experiencing knee soreness
Bautista still has some soreness in his left knee Sunday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista struck out two in a scoreless inning Friday but reported knee soreness after the game and hasn't pitched since. With the Orioles eliminated from the playoff mix, it would not be surprising to see them let their gigantic power reliever rest his knee for the rest of the regular season.
Sep 30, 2022
Dealing with knee soreness
Bautista, who struck out two in a scoreless eighth inning Friday against the Yankees, is dealing with left knee soreness, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista came in for a high-leverage spot and got the job done, but he was apparently pitching at less than 100 percent by the time he exited the game. DL Hall got the save Friday. It's unclear if Bautista will be available for Baltimore's next game.
Sep 25, 2022
Blows save, takes loss
Bautista (4-4) blew the save and took the loss Saturday against the Astros. He allowed four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two over 1.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Bautista relieved Dillon Tate in the top of the eighth with one out and a runner on first. After getting Kyle Tucker to strike out swinging, Bautista served up a double to Yui Gurriel to drive home Yordan Alvarez and tie the game up at 7-7. The right-hander came back out in the ninth and gave up a leadoff single and a walk to start the inning before ultimately being tagged for four runs. It was just Bautista's second blown save of the season and the first time he was charged with a loss since July 31.
Sep 23, 2022
Records one-out save
Bautista picked up the save in Thursday's 2-0 win over the Astros. He did not allow a run while recording a strikeout over one-third of an inning.
ANALYSIS
Bautista has converted the save on 13 straight opportunities, recording a 1.99 ERA over 22.2 innings in 20 outings during that span; however, during his last three appearances prior to this outing, the righty had allowed two runs and six baserunners over four innings.
Sep 18, 2022
Picks up 14th save
Bautista recorded the save Sunday in Toronto, allowing a run on a hit and two walks while striking out one in the ninth inning of a 5-4 win.
ANALYSIS
Bautista retired the first two batters before issuing a walk and allowing a run-scoring double to make it a 5-4 game. After another walk he got Bo Bichette to ground out to end the game. It was his 14th save in 15 tries and his fourth save in September. He's been a little shaky in his last four outings, allowing a couple of runs and walking four batters in five innings of work.
Sep 13, 2022
Notches 13th save
Bautista picked up the save Tuesday against the Nationals. He allowed no hits and one walk while striking out two over one scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
In his first appearance since sitting out a few days due to arm fatigue, Bautista worked around a leadoff walk to pitch a scoreless ninth inning and earn his 13th save of the season. The 27-year-old is 13-for-14 in save opportunities with a 1.60 ERA on the season. He should remain the top option for saves in Baltimore as long as his arm holds up.
Sep 11, 2022
Available Sunday
Bautista (arm) will be available out of the bullpen Sunday, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista was held out for a few days with arm fatigue, but he played catch Saturday without issue and said Sunday that he is now feeling "really good." As such, expect Bautista to get the ball if the Orioles find themselves needing to protect a lead of three runs or less in the ninth inning of Sunday's game against the Red Sox.
Sep 10, 2022
Plays catch
Bautista (arm) played catch Saturday and has a chance to be available Saturday or Sunday against the Red Sox, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista was unavailable Friday due to arm fatigue, but it looks as though he may have avoided a more serious injury. The Orioles won't know for sure until they see how his arm responds to throwing, but it's possible he's cleared to pitch right away.
Sep 9, 2022
Dealing with arm fatigue
Bautista was unavailable for Friday's game due to arm fatigue, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
The Orioles held a one-run lead in the ninth inning of Friday's contest and Bautista had not pitched in three days, but the injury would explain why Dillon Tate received the save opportunity instead of the regular closer. Bautista's injury does not sound serious, but it's unclear when he will be available next.
Sep 7, 2022
Nails down 12th save
Bautista gave up a run on two hits over two innings Tuesday to record his 12th save of the season in a 9-6 win over the Blue Jays. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander entered the game in the eighth inning with the Orioles clinging to a 6-5 lead and was his usual dominant self, but after they tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the frame, Bautista came back out for the ninth and allowed a run to creep across the plate with two outs. Since the beginning of August, and his ascension to the closer role, Bautista has a 1.53 ERA, 0.68 WHIP and 24:3 K:BB through 17.2 innings while converting all nine of his save chances.
Sep 2, 2022
Continues dominance in relief
Bautista picked up the save in Thursday's 3-0 victory over the Guardians, allowing one walk while striking out two over one inning.
ANALYSIS
Bautista has converted the save in each of his last nine opportunities, and he has recorded a 0.75 ERA and 0.50 WHIP in 12 innings over his last 10 appearances. In addition, the righty has allowed just one baserunner in his last five outings, striking out 10 in seven innings during that stretch.
Aug 27, 2022
Collects 10th save
Bautista struck out three without allowing a baserunner in 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the save in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Bautista peppered the strike zone, throwing 13 of his 15 pitches for strikes and inducing an impressive six whiffs. It's his third straight appearance of more than one inning -- he's struck out eight with one hit-by-pitch and no hits or walks allowed through five innings in that span. He's now collected eight saves since ascending to the closer role full-time, and the hard-throwing righty has 10 saves in 57 innings across 57 appearances. He's pitched to a stellar 1.58 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 76:16 K:BB.
Aug 26, 2022
Sharp in fourth win
Bautista (4-3) struck out two across two perfect innings to earn the extra-innings win over the White Sox on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Bautista needed just 18 pitches (13 strikes) to navigate the 10th and 11th frames. He didn't let the initial runner in either inning leave second base. Bautista has settled in nicely as the Orioles' closer in August, logging a 1.46 ERA, 0.73 WHIP and 17:2 K:BB while going 6-for-6 in save chances through 11 appearances spanning 12.1 innings. For the year, he's posted a dominant 1.62 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 73:16 K:BB through 55.2 innings.
Aug 23, 2022
Five-out save Tuesday
Bautista earned the save Tuesday against the White Sox, striking out three and hitting a batter in 1.2 innings in a 5-3 victory.
ANALYSIS
Bautista entered the game with one out and two on in the eighth inning and struck out both Luis Robert and Jose Abreu while keeping Chicago off the board. He retired the side in order in the ninth to end the game. It was his ninth save in 10 chances and sixth in August. The rookie has a 1.74 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 15:2 K:BB in 10.1 innings this month.
Aug 21, 2022
Allows run but earns save
Bautista gave up a solo home run and struck out one in one inning to earn the save in Sunday's 5-3 win over the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Bautista gave up the solo shot to Xander Bogaerts in the ninth inning, but the Red Sox couldn't build off of it. This was just the second run Bautista's allowed in 8.2 innings in August, and both runs have come via the long ball. He's picked up five of his eight saves this year in that span, and he owns a sterling 1.73 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 68:16 K:BB through 52 innings. He's locked in as the Orioles' closer.
Aug 17, 2022
Racks up seventh save
Bautista struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Tuesday to record his seventh save of the season in a 4-2 win over the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
The dominant rookie fired nine of 11 pitches for strikes while setting down the heart of the Toronto order, and two of his fastballs popped triple digits on the radar gun. Bautista has gone 4-for-4 on save chances since taking over as the Orioles' closer, and since the All-Star break has sports a 1.35 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 22:3 K:BB through 13.1 innings.
Aug 10, 2022
Notches sixth save
Bautista picked up the save Tuesday against the Blue Jays. He allowed zero runs on one hit and zero walks while striking out one over one inning.
ANALYSIS
Despite an infield single off the bat of Santiago Espinal and an error which moved him to second, Bautista emerged unscathed to secure his sixth save of the season. Bautista has been nothing short of electric this season, with a fastball that routinely touches 100 mph, and a k% in the 98th percentile. As the Orioles continue winning games, Bautista should continue locking down saves.
Aug 9, 2022
Nails down fifth save
Bautista gave up a hit and struck out one in 1.1 scoreless innings Monday to record his fifth save of the season in a 7-4 win over the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander hasn't yet been officially named Baltimore's closer by manager Brandon Hyde, but Bautista continues to look the part. He's collected saves in two straight appearances -- the only two saves by O's relievers since Jorge Lopez was traded -- and has a 1.74 ERA, 0.58 WHIP and dominant 19:2 K:BB through 10.1 innings since the All-Star break.
Aug 6, 2022
Notches fourth save
Bautista gave up a hit and a walk while striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to record his fourth save of the season in a 1-0 win over the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Manager Brandon Hyde wouldn't commit to the 27-year-old as his sole closer following the Jorge Lopez trade, but as expected Bautista collected Baltimore's first save after the trade deadline. Cionel Perez, one of the other relievers Hyde mentioned as a ninth-inning option, worked 1.2 frames in a set-up role. Bautista's numbers certainly seem worthy of an extended run in the closer spot, as he's averaged 98.9 mph with his fastball and boasts a 1.77 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 62:15 K:BB through 45.2 innings in what has been a dazzling rookie campaign.
Aug 2, 2022
In closing committee
Manager Brandon Hyde said Bautista, Cionel Perez and Dillon Tate the candidates to closer for Baltimore after Jorge Lopez was traded to the Twins on Tuesday, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista was the presumptive closer for the Orioles in the immediate aftermath of the trade, but Hyde will instead employ a matchup-based approach for the ninth inning. The right-hander has three saves and 13 holds to go with a 1.66 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 34.4 percent strikeout rate in his first taste of big-league action this year, so he's the logical candidate to head Baltimore's committee, though that doesn't necessarily mean he'll receive the bulk of the save chances.
Aug 2, 2022
Presumptive closer in Baltimore
Bautista is the presumptive closer for Baltimore after Jorge Lopez was traded to the Twins on Tuesday, Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
A 27-year-old rookie, Bautista has emerged as one of manager Brandon Hyde's top arms, posting a 1.66 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 56:14 K:BB through 43.1 innings this season. Bautista is tied for second on the team in holds and has recorded only one save since mid-May, but the overwhelming dominance Bautista has shown with his 98-plus-mph heater makes him the most likely candidate to step into the ninth-inning role. Bautista told Silver that through an interpreter that closing big-league games would be "a dream come true, something I've always dreamt of."
Aug 1, 2022
Handed loss Sunday
Bautista (3-3) allowed a run on one hit and one walk while striking out one in one inning, taking the loss Sunday versus the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Bautista wasn't able to extend his scoreless streak into August, and he instead saw it snapped at 8.2 innings. Brandon Drury took him deep for a solo home run in the eighth inning. This was Bautista's first loss since June 15, as he continues to be an effective part of the Orioles' bullpen. He owns a 1.66 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 57:15 K:BB across 43.1 innings while picking up three saves, 13 holds and one blown save in 45 appearances.
Jul 29, 2022
Earns four-out save
Bautista picked up the save in Thursday's 3-0 victory over the Rays. He allowed zero runs on zero hits and zero walks while striking out three over 1.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Bautista came on in the eighth with runners on second and third and struck out Randy Arozarena to end the inning, earning his first save since May 12 and his third overall. The reliever hasn't allowed a run or a hit over his last eight starts and sports a 14:1 K:BB during that stretch. Jorge Lopez is still expected to be the Orioles' primary closer, but Bautista got the opportunity Thursday after Lopez took the loss in his last outing.
Jul 23, 2022
Returns with clean inning
Bautista (hand) struck out the side in a perfect inning in Friday's 7-6 loss to the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Bautista dealt with a sore right hand before the All-Star break, but a week off served him well. He's put together 4.1 consecutive scoreless innings in his last four appearances. Bautista has a 1.67 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 47:13 K:BB with 12 holds, two saves, a blown save and a 3-2 record through 37.2 innings. He'll resume his role as a setup man to closer Jorge Lopez.
Jul 17, 2022
Dealing with sore hand
Bautista disclosed Sunday that he wasn't available for Saturday's 6-4 extra-inning win over the Rays due to a sore right hand, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista said he picked up the injury after a mishap with an exercise band. The right-hander isn't certain if he'll be available for Sunday's series finale, but he expects to be ready to go out of the bullpen coming out of the All-Star break.
Jul 16, 2022
Dealing with upper-body soreness
Bautista was unavailable for Saturday's game against Tampa Bay due to upper-body soreness, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista was conspicuous by his absence in Saturday's extra-innings win. Manager Brandon Hyde did not go into much detail afterward, but he admitted Bautista was down due to injury. Bautista has solidified his standing as one of the team's top bullpen arms with a 1.72 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 44:14 K:BB in 36.2 innings so far this season.
Jul 3, 2022
Continues pitching well
Bautista struck out two in a perfect inning during Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Bautista has gone 16.2 innings without allowing an earned run, though he gave up two unearned runs in that stretch. He's posted 10 of his 11 holds and a 3-1 record with a 21:5 K:BB in a dominant span. The 27-year-old has thrived throughout the year in a high-leverage role, picking up two saves with a 1.42 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in 31.2 innings overall. With Jorge Lopez blowing saves in each of his last two outings, Bautista figures to be at the top of the list of candidates to pick up more save chances if manager Brandon Hyde makes a change in the closer role.
Jun 18, 2022
Collects win Friday
Bautista (3-2) earned the win Friday over the Rays. He struck out three across 1.1 perfect innings.
ANALYSIS
Bautista was the beneficiary of Adley Rutschman's RBI single in the seventh inning, which accounted for the lone run in the contest. Across his last 12.1 innings, Bautista has allowed only one unearned run with eight hits and four walks while adding 12 strikeouts. The 26-year-old continues to dominate in a high-leverage role with a 1.65 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 29:10 K:BB, two saves and seven holds through 27.1 innings this season.
Jun 15, 2022
Allows walkoff hit
Bautista (2-2) took the loss Wednesday versus the Blue Jays. He allowed an unearned run on one hit without recording an out.
ANALYSIS
Bautista entered with the game tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the 10th inning and gave up an RBI single to Vladimir Guerrero on just his second pitch. This ended an 11-inning scoreless streak for Bautista, though he still hasn't allowed an earned run since May 16. The hard-throwing 26-year-old owns a 1.73 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 26:10 K:BB while adding two saves and seven holds through 26 innings this season.
Jun 5, 2022
Awarded win Saturday
Bautista (2-1) pitched a perfect seventh inning to earn the win Saturday versus the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
The Orioles led from the third inning on, but starter Tyler Wells only went four frames, failing to qualify for the decision. Keegan Akin followed with two innings of work, allowing two runs, but the official scorer awarded the win to Bautista instead. The right-hander has now allowed five hits and three walks while striking out six in eight scoreless innings across his last eight appearances. He's picked up three holds and two wins in that span, and he's posted a 1.96 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 23:9 K:BB in 23 innings overall.

Pitches clean inning Friday
Bautista pitched a perfect inning in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Bautista has put together a seven-inning scoreless streak in his last seven outings, picking up a win, two holds and a 6:3 K:BB in that span. The right-hander continues to put together quality appearances with a 2.05 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 23:9 K:BB through 22 innings overall. Bautista has primarily functioned as a setup man to closer Jorge Lopez lately, though the former has also logged two saves this season.

Snags win Thursday
Bautista (1-1) earned the win Thursday versus the Yankees. He walked one and recorded one out.
ANALYSIS
Bautista was called upon for the last out in the top of the ninth inning after Jorge Lopez allowed the game-tying run. Bautista walked Joey Gallo but got Giancarlo Stanton to line out to end a bases-loaded threat, and the Orioles won on Anthony Santander's walkoff homer. Through 7.2 innings in May, Bautista's allowed just two runs, and they came in a non-save situation. The right-hander has a 2.81 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 18:7 K:BB across 16 innings this season while adding two saves and a hold in 17 appearances.

Picks up four-out save
Bautista allowed a hit in 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the save in Thursday's 3-2 win over the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Bautista's starting to earn more high-leverage work -- this was his second straight appearance with a save. He extended his scoreless streak to six innings across his last six appearances. The right-hander has a 1.93 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB across 14 innings this season, with two saves, a hold and a 0-1 record. Jorge Lopez (bereavement) is likely to be back soon, so Bautista may have to settle for a setup role, though he could still pitch his way into more save chances.

Notches one-out save
Bautista notched a save after he pitched one-third of an inning, striking out the only batter he faced to end Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
After Dillon Tate allowed a solo home run and two more batters to reach base, Bautista was called upon to face Tyler O'Neill with two outs in the ninth inning. He proceeded to strike him out on five pitches, earning his first career save. With his ability to hit triple-digits with his fastball, the 26-year-old could be in line for more high-leverage appearances moving forward. Bautista has produced a 2.13 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with 16 strikeouts over 12.2 innings this season.

Solid in longest outing of year
Bautista allowed one hit and struck out two over 1.2 scoreless innings in Monday's 2-1 loss to the Twins.
ANALYSIS
This was the first time in 2022 that Bautista's recorded five outs. He's only allowed runs in two of his 10 appearances, pitching to a solid 2.70 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB across 10 innings. Bautista has picked up a hold and an 0-1 record as a middle-innings option for manager Brandon Hyde.

Takes first loss
Bautista (0-1) took the loss Tuesday versus the Brewers, allowing a run on two hits with two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning.
ANALYSIS
Bautista pitched 1.1 scoreless innings Sunday versus the Rays in his major-league debut, but he couldn't replicate the effort Tuesday. He allowed a Willy Adames double in the seventh inning, and Cionel Perez allowed the inherited runner to score on Andrew McCutchen's single. Bautista is expected to begin in a low-leverage role out of the bullpen, though he has limited experience as a closer in the minors -- he racked up 11 saves in 40 appearances across three levels last year.

Earns major-league roster spot
Bautista has made the Orioles' Opening Day roster, Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista was added to the 40-man roster in November to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, and he'll be available to make his major-league debut to begin the season after he posted a 4.91 ERA, 7:5 K:BB and 1.91 WHIP in 3.2 innings across four appearances this spring. The Orioles recently traded Cole Sulser and Tanner Scott to the Marlins, so Bautista should have a chance to earn high-leverage opportunities if he pitches well early in his major-league career.
