Has full range of motion
DeGrom (elbow) has full range of motion back in his pitching arm, he told Joel Sherman of the New York Post on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The goal for deGrom -- who is a little over four months removed from Tommy John surgery -- is to begin a throwing program early on in the new year and progress to mound work sometime during spring training. "My arm feels pretty close to normal already," he said. DeGrom is aiming to rejoin the Rangers' rotation by next August.
Jun 13, 2023
Surgery goes as expected
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said that the Tommy John surgery that deGrom (elbow) underwent Monday went well, the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Rangers team physician Dr. Keith Meister performed the reconstructive procedure on deGrom's UCL, marking the second time the soon-to-be 35-year-old has had Tommy John surgery after he first required the elbow operation in October 2010. Though new ligament damage or inflammation was seemingly detected during Monday's surgery, deGrom will still face the typical 12-to-14-month recovery timeline and could struggle to return to elite form, given his advanced age along with the track record of pitchers who have had two Tommy John procedures. DeGrom likely won't be cleared to start a throwing program before the end of 2023 and probably shouldn't be expected to be ready to rejoin the Texas rotation until midsummer 2024 in a best-case scenario. He'll be heading into the second season of a five-year, $185 million deal in 2024.

Requires Tommy John surgery
DeGrom will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a torn UCL in his right elbow, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom landed on the injured list April 29 and was shifted to the 60-day IL on Monday. The 34-year-old ace had been throwing bullpen sessions regularly and didn't appear to suffer any setbacks, but the procedure will shut him down for the season and keep him out for the majority of 2024 as well. DeGrom will conclude 2023 with a 2.67 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and a dominant 45:4 K:BB through 30.1 innings.
Jun 5, 2023
Shifted to 60-day IL
DeGrom (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Monday.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom has been throwing off a mound for a couple weeks now as he works his way back from right elbow inflammation. While it does not seem as though he's had a setback, he now won't be eligible for activation until June 28. Moving deGrom to the 60-day IL frees up a spot for Spencer Howard, who is making his return from the IL.
May 30, 2023
Another bullpen session coming
DeGrom (elbow) will throw another bullpen session Wednesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
The Rangers will reportedly re-evaluate deGrom's situation once the team returns from its current road trip. At that point, a decision could be made regarding a potential rehab assignment and/or a tentative return date. The 34-year-old ace has been on the injured list since April 29 with right elbow inflammation.
May 27, 2023
Uses all pitches in session
DeGrom (elbow) threw a 31-pitch bullpen session Friday, Shawn McFarland of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom threw his fourth bullpen session in the last week-and-a-half and took a significant step this time out. The right-hander used his entire arsenal of pitches, something he hadn't done in the previous three sessions. The Rangers haven't made a decision about a rehab assignment for deGrom, who hasn't thrown more than 32 pitches in his four bullpens.
May 23, 2023
Throws bullpen session
DeGrom (elbow) threw a 32-pitch bullpen session Monday.
ANALYSIS
Texas manager Bruce Bochy said the session went "really well and said deGrom is scheduled to throw another bullpen session Friday, at which time he'll incorporate breaking balls for the first time in his recovery. The Rangers have not yet decided if the right-hander will need a rehab assignment.
May 21, 2023
Another bullpen on tap
DeGrom (elbow) will throw a third bullpen session Monday, Shawn McFarland of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom, who threw a couple light bullpen sessions last week, will throw a third bullpen session and could "possibly" throw to live hitters by the end of the week. The pitcher said it felt like he had "turned a corner" after Friday's session.
May 20, 2023
Back on mound
DeGrom (elbow) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Friday, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
This marked the second time this week deGrom threw a session. After Friday's exercise, he rested before going to the outfield to play catch. It was all positive news for deGrom, who said he feels like he's "turned a corner" in his recovery from what was diagnosed as elbow inflammation. "Everything felt good," deGrom said. "We are heading in the right direction." The Rangers haven't discussed a rehab assignment yet, and it should be noted the right-hander didn't take a significant amount of time away from throwing.
May 16, 2023
Throws light bullpen
DeGrom (elbow) threw a "light" bullpen Tuesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom is still a few weeks away from a return from the elbow inflammation that placed him on the 15-day injured list at the end of April. The right-hander will likely advanced to more traditional bullpens in the coming days, and then could begin a rehab assignment if he continues to make positive progress. At this point, it looks likely that deGrom is back in the Texas rotation right around the start of June.
May 9, 2023
Could miss another three weeks
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy told reporters that deGrom (elbow) could be another two-to-three weeks away from his return, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Bochy noted that deGrom has been going very easy with testing out his throwing while only playing light catch at this stage in his program. The right-hander has no timetable for when he'll be able to return to the mound for bullpen sessions, and that step will have to take place before a more serious ETA for deGrom's return to the Texas pitching staff. At this point, it seems very unlikely that the 34-year-old will back back in the month of May, with the start of June seeming to be a more realistic timeline at this conjecture.
May 9, 2023
No timetable for mound work
DeGrom (elbow) remains limited to playing light catch and there is no timetable for when he will be cleared to throw off a mound, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
"We're going very easy with it and testing it out," Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said. While deGrom is eligible to return from the injured list Sunday, it's clear that it's going to take longer than that, perhaps much longer. Understandably, the Rangers want to proceed very cautiously with the prized right-hander as he works his way back from right elbow inflammation.
May 3, 2023
To play catch soon
DeGrom (elbow) is slated to begin playing catch during the Rangers' May 5-14 road trip, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
When exactly he'll play catch during the road trip isn't clear, but it's good news that it's coming soon. DeGrom landed on the injured list last weekend with right elbow inflammation and is eligible for activation in mid-May. Whether he'll be ready to go at that time remains to be seen.
Apr 29, 2023
Goes on IL with elbow inflammation
Texas placed deGrom on the 15-day injured list Saturday with right elbow inflammation.
ANALYSIS
The Rangers are recalling Yerry Rodriguez from Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding transaction. This comes after deGrom left Friday's start against the Yankees after dealing with tightness in his right forearm, and unsurprisingly the result is another stint on the injured list for the right-hander. The good news is there doesn't appear to be structural damage for deGrom, so he could be back in the rotation in the middle of May if everything goes well.
Apr 28, 2023
Left with forearm tightness
The Rangers announced that deGrom left Friday's start against the Rangers with forearm tightness, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. He allowed no runs over 3.2 innings with one walk and two strikeouts before leaving.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom has now left two of his last three starts with injuries, as he dealt with wrist soreness earlier in the campaign. The right-hander assuredly will undergo imaging to check for structural damage, and while he should be considered day-to-day for now, a trip to the injured list cannot be ruled out at this point.
Apr 23, 2023
Fans 11 in win
DeGrom (2-0) earned the win Sunday, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and zero walks over six innings against the Athletics. He struck out 11.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom dispelled any worries fantasy managers had about the wrist injury that forced him out of his last start after four innings, striking out 11 batters while giving up just one run over six innings Sunday. After sporting a 4.32 ERA in his first three starts, DeGrom has recovered nicely with just one earned run combined in his last two appearances while recording 14.51 K/9 on the season.
Apr 22, 2023
Confirmed for start Sunday
DeGrom (wrist) will start Sunday for the Rangers after reporting no issues during his side session Friday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was able to throw without issues Friday and will end up not missing a single start after leaving Monday's start against the Royals on Monday with wrist soreness. The right-hander may be on a close watch, but everything suggests the 34-year-old will be ready to roll against one of the worst lineups in baseball in the Athletics.
Apr 22, 2023
Throws session Friday
DeGrom (wrist) threw a bullpen session Friday, but the Rangers have yet to confirm him for Monday's start, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Texas manager Bruce Bochy said prior to Friday's game that he'd have a better idea about deGrom's availability Saturday. DeGrom was removed from a start earlier this week after four innings with right wrist soreness.
Apr 21, 2023
Throwing bullpen Friday
DeGrom (wrist) is throwing a bullpen Friday with the intent to pitch against the Athletics on Sunday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
As Grant points out there's been nothing finalized, but it appears that deGrom will make his scheduled start against Oakland as long as everything goes well in the bullpen session. The right-hander was dominant over four innings against the Royals on Monday before leaving with right wrist soreness. Fantasy players will want to keep a close eye, but it does appear the ace will be on the bump against a very beatable Oakland lineup over the weekend.
Apr 18, 2023
Expects to make next start
DeGrom (wrist) told reporters before Tuesday's game against the Royals that he fully expects to make his next scheduled start against the Athletics after being reevaluated, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom said that he feels better than he did Monday, and he was "encouraged" by the results. The right-hander fired four no-hit innings while throwing 39-of-58 pitches for strikes before leaving with soreness in his right wrist. The Rangers will certainly take precautions if there are any hiccups between now and the weekend, but for now it seems likely that deGrom will be back on the bump against the Athletics on Saturday.
Apr 17, 2023
To be re-evaluated Tuesday
DeGrom (wrist) will be re-evaluated Tuesday and hopes to make his next start this weekend against the Athletics, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
He said the wrist soreness popped up early in his start Monday against the Royals and it got a bit worse as the outing wore on and he didn't want to change his mechanics and create a bigger issue for himself. DeGrom told reporters after the game that he could have kept pitching and hopes to make his next start, but we should learn more after he is re-evaluated.
Apr 17, 2023
Leaves with right wrist soreness
The Rangers announced that deGrom left Monday's start against the Royals with right wrist soreness, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. He allowed no runs and no hits over four innings with one walk and five strikeouts before exiting.
ANALYSIS
It was a dominant effort for deGrom before exiting with 39-of-58 pitches landing for strikes. Dane Dunning took over in relief for the right-hander. The Rangers are calling his exit precautionary, but fantasy managers will want to pay close attention to see if the wrist soreness will require the ace to miss any amount of time.
Apr 11, 2023
Fans nine in no-decision
DeGrom struck out nine and allowed two runs on seven hits and no walks across seven innings during Tuesday's extra-inning win over the Royals. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander surrendered single tallies in the third and fourth innings, but he gave up just three singles across his other five frames. After an ugly debut for the Rangers during which he allowed five runs, deGrom has given up just three earned runs with a 20:2 K:BB in 13 innings over his last two starts.
Apr 5, 2023
Strikes out 11 in win
DeGrom (1-0) earned the win Wednesday, allowing one earned on two hits and two walks over six innings against the Orioles. He struck out 11.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was perfect through four, striking out eight of the first 12 batters he faced, but he got into trouble in the fifth after allowing a leadoff double to Ryan Mountcastle. Two runs came around to score in the inning, but deGrom was charged with only one earned due to an error from Marcus Semien. The veteran ace allowed a leadoff walk to Adley Rutschman in the sixth but escaped the inning with two more strikeouts. It was certainly a nice bounce back performance for deGrom, who faltered in his Ranger debut, and there's no reason to except his poor outing on Opening Day was anything but an outlier. DeGrom is scheduled to pitch next Tuesday against Kansas City.
Mar 31, 2023
Gives up five runs
DeGrom allowed five earned runs on six hits and no walks while striking out seven across 3.2 innings in Thursday's win over the Phillies. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was making his Rangers' debut, though things didn't go as planned as he allowed at least one run in three of the four innings he pitched. All six of the hits he allowed went for extra bases, one of which was a two-run homer by Alec Bohm. On the other hand, deGrom did show flashes of his usual dominance by striking out seven on 13 called strikes and 10 swinging strikes across 73 pitches. While it was far from his best performance, it's way too early to grow concerned about deGrom's potential to produce moving forward.
Mar 24, 2023
Set to start opener for Rangers
DeGrom has been named the Rangers' Opening Day starter on March 30 against the Phillies, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom isn't going to be fully stretched out after dealing with a side issue for much of this spring, as he will be limited to around 75-80 pitches against Philadelphia. He's made just one official Cactus League start but should be in line for one more tune-up Saturday.
Mar 20, 2023
Makes spring debut
DeGrom allowed two hits and struck out four over three scoreless innings in Sunday's spring start against the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom made his Cactus League debut after being brought along slowly from a side injury. The right-hander looked sharp his first time out, hitting 100 mph twice in three innings while the fastball consistently clocked in at 97-99 mph, per Kennedi Landry of MLB.com. He threw 34 pitches (28 strikes) during the outing then tossed more pitches in a bullpen session. There's time for at least one more Cactus League outing, and deGrom is expected to be on a restricted pitch count to start the regular season.
Mar 17, 2023
Set for Cactus League debut Sunday
DeGrom (side) will make his Cactus League debut Sunday against the Rangers, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom looked good in a start against minor leaguers earlier this week, striking out five while allowing one run over two innings. He figures to be ready for three innings Sunday as he ramps up for the start of the regular season. Manager Bruce Bochy has said that deGrom will likely be on a 75-80 pitch count at the beginning of the regular season after missing so much time this spring with side tightness.
Mar 16, 2023
Likely on pitch count early
DeGrom (side) is likely to be on a pitch count to start the season, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Texas manager Bruce Bochy indicated both deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi (side) may be restricted to 75-80 pitches initially. That means guys like Dane Dunning, Glenn Otto or Cole Ragans could paired with the starters. DeGrom recently threw two innings in a minor-league game and is ramping up for the regular season.
Mar 14, 2023
Looks sharp in minor-league start
DeGrom (side) struck out five and allowed one run over two innings during his start in a minor-league spring game Monday and said afterward that he believes he'll be available to start the Rangers' regular-season opener March 30 versus the Phillies, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. "That's up to [the Rangers' coaching staff]" deGrom said after Monday's start. "I'm here to help us win. If it falls that I'm on Opening Day, that's a huge honor."
ANALYSIS
DeGrom's spring debut was delayed after he had his throwing program slowed down early in spring training when he experienced left side tightness, but he looked to be healthy and as dialed in as ever Monday while using all four of his pitches in the outing. The lone run he allowed came on a fluky inside-the-park home run, and deGrom was able to rebound swiftly thereafter and closed the start on a high note, coming away especially pleased with how he threw his changeup and curveball. DeGrom went on to throw an additional 26 pitches in the bullpen following the two-inning appearance, so he looks like he'll be on pace to handle something resembling a normal workload by the time the regular season begins even if he only makes one or two more starts in spring training.
Mar 12, 2023
Starting minor-league game
DeGrom will start a minor-league spring training game on the back fields Monday, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander won't start Monday's Cactus League contest as previously rumored, but he'll still see game action. He's working his way back from left side tightness and sat around 98-99 mph during a 35-pitch session of live batting practice last week. Assuming all goes well Monday, deGrom could gain full clearance shortly thereafter, though it's possible he'll still begin the campaign with a limited workload.
Mar 8, 2023
Could pitch in Cactus game Monday
DeGrom (side) could make his Cactus League debut as soon as Monday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Working his way back from left side tightness, deGrom sat at 98-99 mph during a 35-pitch live batting practice session Wednesday. As long as he rebounds from that throwing session with no issues, he should be cleared to return to game action. The two-time Cy Young winner remains on track for the start of the season, although it's probably not reasonable to expect a normal workload right out of the gate.
Mar 8, 2023
Facing live hitters Wednesday
DeGrom (side) will throw to live hitters Wednesday, Levi Weaver of The Athleticreports.
ANALYSIS
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy says the right-hander will throw around 30 pitches in the session. He had been scheduled to throw a bullpen since Saturday, but now it will include the live hitting aspect, as well. The right-hander has been declared to be "on schedule" for the regular season since the end of February by Bochy, but it's understandable if fantasy managers are skeptical after his injury-plagued last two seasons. Those who haven't drafted yet will want to keep a close eye on reports with deGrom after the session and in the coming days.
Mar 4, 2023
Will throw BP session Wednesday
DeGrom (side) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was able to throw a bullpen session Sunday, and Rangers manager Bruce Bochy announced that the right-hander was "on schedule" for the regular season. Because of his injury history over the last two years fantasy managers will want to pay close attention to the right-hander's development, but for now, it appears deGrom will be on the bump for Opening Day in his first year as a member of the Rangers.
Feb 28, 2023
Two more bullpens
Texas manager Bruce Bochy said deGrom (side) is expected to throw two more bullpen sessions before getting into a spring training game, Jack Magruder of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After deGrom threw a second bullpen session Sunday, Bochy declared the right-hander on schedule for the regular season. Apparently, part of that schedule includes at least two more sessions, one of which may include batters. Mitch Garver, who caught Sunday's session, referred to deGrom's fastball as "special" and estimated the pitcher was at about 85 percent.
Feb 27, 2023
Throws second bullpen
DeGrom (side) threw a bullpen session Sunday, Matthew Postins of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Texas manager Bruce Bochy said deGrom is on schedule for the regular season, after the right-hander threw his second bullpen session. The Rangers want deGrom to throw one live batting practice session before appearing in a spring game -- two bullpens and one live BP session has been the practice for all Texas starters thus far.
Feb 23, 2023
Low-intensity fastballs in bullpen
DeGrom's (side) bullpen session Thursday consisted of 20 fastballs at relatively low intensity, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
There were no breaking balls and the effort level was pretty minimal but, as deGrom said afterward, "it was a small step, but a step in the right direction." The right-hander is expected to miss at least the first week of Cactus League games as he eases back into things after feeling some left side tightness, but he's progressing slowly but surely.
Feb 23, 2023
Completes bullpen session
DeGrom (side) threw a 22-pitch bullpen session Thursday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom and Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux looked to be all smiles after the pitcher completed his mound work, which seems like a good sign. The ace is a little behind schedule due to some tightness in his left side which cropped up at the start of camp, but he's progressed well since then. While deGrom is not expected to appear during the team's first week of Cactus League games, it shouldn't be long after that assuming all goes well.
Feb 22, 2023
Bullpen session coming Thursday
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said deGrom (side) will throw his first bullpen session of spring training Thursday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom will wind up having his spring throwing progression pushed back about a week on account of left side tightness, after the minor injury coupled with cold weather in Arizona prompted the Rangers to scratch him from his previously scheduled bullpen session last Wednesday. The two-time Cy Young Award winner was able to resume throwing and fielding drills Sunday, and after experiencing no setbacks while working out for the past few days, deGrom will get step back on the mound Thursday. He's not expected to be included in the pitching schedule for the Rangers' first week of Cactus League games, but deGrom nonetheless looks to be on track to be fully ramped up well in advance of Opening Day.
Feb 21, 2023
Plays catch again
DeGrom (side) played catch Monday for a second consecutive day, Jesse Borek of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom is ramping up at a measured pace after the Rangers held him back from throwing last week. Texas manager Bruce Bochy would not put a firm date on when the right-hander will throw a bullpen session, but the manager expects that to occur later this week.
Feb 19, 2023
Responds well to workout
DeGrom (side) felt good during his workout Sunday and appears on track to continue his throwing program Monday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Shortly after reporting to the Rangers for his first spring training with his new organization, deGrom experienced left side tightness in a bullpen session, resulting in the coaching staff shutting him down for workouts for a few days. Fortunately, the minor side injury looks to be mostly in the rear-view mirror at this point, and if he can get back on the mound within the next day or two, he shouldn't find himself too far behind the Rangers' other starting pitchers once Cactus League play opens next weekend. Though deGrom isn't expected to pitch during the Rangers' first week of spring games, that's likely in deference to his status as the staff ace rather than any legitimate concern about his injury. Instead, expect the Rangers to use the first week of spring games to get longer evaluations on some of the pitchers who are fighting for spots on the Opening Day roster.
Feb 19, 2023
Game action put off
DeGrom (side) is not expected to pitch in a game during the first week of exhibitions, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was removed from workouts for four days with tightness in his side but is scheduled to resume field activity Sunday. The Rangers are exhibiting an abundance of caution with the right-hander, and Grant indicates deGrom may initially pitch in B games or intra-squad games where the environment is more controlled.
Feb 18, 2023
Field work coming Sunday
DeGrom (side) won't throw a bullpen session Sunday but will play catch and go through fielding drills, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom is dealing with some side tightness early in camp, and while the issue is a very common one for pitchers to experience at this stage of spring, it's brought extra scrutiny given deGrom's talent level and lengthy recent injury history. The Rangers have suggested he would be able to pitch through the problem in the regular season, but there's no reason to push things with Opening Day still nearly six weeks away. DeGrom will take part in some activities Sunday with an eye towards potentially throwing a bullpen session Monday or Tuesday.
Feb 17, 2023
Could throw Sunday or Monday
DeGrom (side) could resume throwing on Sunday or Monday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom's throwing program is on pause after he felt some tightness in his left side during a bullpen session earlier this week. The Rangers have downplayed the severity, suggesting that deGrom would be pitching if it were the regular season. The injury isn't a concern at this point, but obviously he'll be watched closely over the next several days.
Feb 15, 2023
Throwing session pushed back
DeGrom had his throwing session on Wednesday moved back to Thursday, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Rangers general manager Chris Young told reporters Wednesday that he was the one who made the decision after deGrom felt some tightness in his left side, and that combined with the irregular cold weather led to the decision. Weaver also notes that the right-hander would be able to play through the discomfort if it were the regular season, with Young saying the decision was made out of "an abundance of caution." Because of deGrom's injury history the past two seasons, it's a situation that needs to be monitored, but it does appear this is more precautionary than anything to be concerned about.

Gets massive five-year deal
DeGrom signed a five-year, $185 million contract with the Rangers on Friday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The contract includes a conditional sixth year that would make the deal worth $222 million. He has a full no-trade clause. The commitment from ownership in Texas has been quite impressive, as they committed $500 million to Corey Seager and Marcus Semien last offseason. DeGrom unsurprisingly opted for a longer contract, as durability is the only question mark with him. The 34-year-old righty logged a 3.08 ERA, 2.13 FIP and 0.75 WHIP in 64.1 innings last season with the Mets after dealing with shoulder injury for the first four months.
Nov 7, 2022
Opts out of contract
DeGrom opted out of the two remaining seasons on his contract with the Mets on Monday, becoming a free agent.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom has elected free agency over returning to the Mets in 2023, opting out of the final two seasons of his deal which included $30.5 million next year. Though he was bogged down by a shoulder injury to open the campaign, the 34-year-old was electric while on the mound this season, producing a 3.08 ERA and 0.75 WHIP with 102 punchouts over 64.1 innings in 11 starts. After making at least 30 starts in four of his first six seasons in the league, deGrom has struggled with his health recently, logging only 38 total outings over the last three years. The right-hander owns a career 2.52 ERA while averaging 10.9 K/9 over nine seasons, making it likely he earns the largest annual value contract for a pitcher on this season's market.
Oct 7, 2022
Officially starting Saturday
DeGrom (finger) will start Saturday's Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Padres, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
This was always expected, though manager Buck Showalter briefly entertained the idea of saving deGrom for the NLDS. Any thought of that went out the window when Max Scherzer was rocked for seven runs -- including four homers -- in Friday's Game 1 loss. DeGrom left his final start of the regular season with a blister on his hand, but Showalter said Thursday that "we don't foresee it to be an issue."
Oct 7, 2022
Blister again downplayed
Manager Buck Showalter downplayed deGrom's blister issue Thursday and said, "we don't foresee it to be an issue," Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander dealt with the blister across his final two starts of the regular season, but it appears the issue won't affect his outlook for the start of the playoffs. Max Scherzer is pitching Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series versus the Padres on Friday, and deGrom is expected to take the mound either Saturday or Sunday, depending on the outcome of the series opener.
Oct 1, 2022
Unconcerned about blister
DeGrom isn't concerned about the blister that forced an early exit from his start Friday against Atlanta, saying, "This will be fine," Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom's three runs allowed in six innings were a disappointment according to his lofty standards, though his 11:0 K:BB was excellent. It looks as though he'll have a chance to start Wednesday against Washington, though he'll might only be asked to do so if playoff seeding is on the line.
Sep 30, 2022
Dealing with blister
DeGrom (5-4) exited Friday's start against Atlanta with a blister, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. He gave up three earned runs on five hits while striking out 11 and taking the loss.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom threw 86 pitches and could have stayed in for the seventh inning if not for the blister. Austin Riley and Matt Olson hit back-to-back homers against deGrom at one point, so perhaps the blister was affecting his command. He tentatively lines up to pitch on the final day of the season against the Nationals, but the Mets may opt to give deGrom more time to get past this blister in advance of the postseason.
Sep 28, 2022
Will start Friday
Manager Buck Showalter said deGrom's next start will come Friday in the series opener against Atlanta, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was originally projected to start Saturday, but he will be moved up a day and go toe-to-toe with Atlanta's ace, Max Fried. DeGrom has faced Atlanta twice this season, allowing a combined five earned runs with 21 strikeouts over 12.1 innings.

Pounded for five runs in loss
DeGrom (5-3) gave up five earned runs on six hits and four walks while striking out five over four innings to take the loss in a 10-4 defeat against the Athletics on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom had his worst start of the season in what appeared on paper like a very favorable matchup against one of the weaker lineups in baseball. He opened the game in an uncharacteristically wild fashion by loading the bases on a single and back-to-back walks. It was the first time that he allowed two or more walks over his past 13 starts. Dermis Garcis then hit a catchable line drive to left field which was played terribly by Jeff McNeil, who tripped and fell on the play, allowing two runs to score. DeGrom still boasts a 2.93 ERA and will look to bounce back into his usual form in his next expected start at Atlanta.

Fans 13 in no-decision
DeGrom allowed three runs on four hits while striking out 13 in five innings in a 7-3 win Sunday against Pittsburgh. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was nearly unhittable through the first five innings, allowing a double to Oneil Cruz to begin the game before striking out 13 of the next 15 batters he faced. The Pirates got to him in the sixth though as the first two batters recorded singles and Cruz deposited a pitch into the seats for a three-run homer. DeGrom has allowed homers in four of his last five appearances and has allowed three runs in each of his last two starts. With Sunday's 13 punch outs, he's struck out 44.1 percent of batters faced this year. His next start will likely be next weekend in Oakland.

Saddled with second loss
deGrom (5-2) took the loss Tuesday, allowing three runs on four hits and no walks over six innings against the Cubs. He struck out 10.
ANALYSIS
A solo home run in the top of the second and a couple of timely hits and sacrifices in the fourth led to deGrom earning his second loss, despite throwing a quality start for the eighth time in eight starts this season. With 10 strikeouts and no walks Tuesday, he has recorded double-digit strikeouts for the third time and owns a marvelous 73:4 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He will take a 2.01 ERA into his next start.

Blanks Bucs in Wednesday's nightcap
DeGrom (5-1) picked up the win in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Pirates, allowing three hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Chris Bassitt fanned 10 batters while giving up just one run in the matinee as the Mets swept the twin bill, but deGrom answered with a dominant start of his own in the nightcap. The two-time Cy Young Award winner fired 16 of 91 pitches for strikes and let only one Pittsburgh baserunner get into scoring position en route to his fifth straight quality start. Since making his season debut at the beginning of August, deGrom boasts a 1.66 ERA, 0.55 WHIP and 63:4 K:BB through 43.1 innings.

Flusters Dodgers in victory
DeGrom (4-1) earned the win over the Dodgers on Wednesday, pitching seven innings and allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out nine batters.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom faced a challenge against MLB's highest-scoring team, but he came out on top while completing seven frames for the first time this season. The right-hander didn't give up his first hit until the fifth inning, and the only run against him came on a Mookie Betts homer in the sixth. DeGrom struck out exactly nine batters for the third straight game while racking up a whopping 25 swinging strikes -- the second time in only six starts that he has reached that mark this season. Despite missing most of the season with a shoulder injury, deGrom remains among the league's elite pitchers, and he's posted dominant numbers with a 1.98 ERA, 0.55 WHIP and 55:3 K:BB through 36.1 innings thus far.

Notches nine strikeouts in win
DeGrom (3-1) earned the win over Colorado on Thursday, pitching six innings and allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out nine batters.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom served up a sixth-inning solo home run to Ryan McMahon, but that was the extent of the damage against him. The right-hander racked up 17 swinging strikes and nine punchouts while notching his third straight quality start. DeGrom has yet to reach 100 pitches in a game this season -- he threw 87 on Thursday -- but that hasn't held him back from recording plenty of strikeouts or from entering the win column. Through five starts, he has three wins while posting a 2.15 ERA and minuscule 0.55 WHIP along with a jaw-dropping 46:2 K:BB over 29.1 innings.

Starting Thursday vs. Rockies
DeGrom will start Thursday against the Rockies, Deesha Thosar of Fox Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
He was originally going to pitch Tuesday against the Yankees, but the Mets pushed him back. It's good to know it was not due to anything physically serious for him miss a start this week. This allows deGrom to line up to face the Dodgers next week.
Aug 19, 2022
Tagged with first loss
DeGrom (2-1) took the loss against Atlanta on Thursday, allowing three runs on five hits and no walks while striking out nine batters over 6.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
In many ways, deGrom was his usual dominant self in the outing -- he racked up 20 swinging strikes and fanned nine batters while giving up just five hits. However, the right-hander surrendered a pair of runs in the third inning, and an infield single by the final batter he faced in the contest (Vaughn Grissom) came back to bite him when Michael Harris II followed with a run-scoring double off reliever Seth Lugo. DeGrom ended up being charged with a season-high three runs, but the loss does nothing to lessen his status as one of fantasy's premier matchup-proof starters.
Aug 14, 2022
Strikes out ten for win
deGrom (2-0) gave up two hits and no walks while striking out ten over six shutout innings to earn the win in a 1-0 victory over the Phillies on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
deGrom was his usual dominant self in Saturday night's pitching duel against Aaron Nola. He racked up ten strikeouts on 19 swinging strikes by peppering the zone with his hard fastball and mixing in a heavy dose of his nasty slider. The scoreless appearance drops his ERA to 1.62 over three starts this injury-shortened season. The 34-year-old right-hander now has 28 strikeouts in 16.2 innings pitched and has only walked one batter. It is worth watching if he can continue to increase his workload from the 76 pitches he threw against the Phillies. He is tentatively expected to make his next start at Atlanta.
Aug 7, 2022
Strikes out 12 in first win
DeGrom (1-0) allowed two runs on a hit and a walk while striking out 12 through 5.2 innings, earning the win Sunday over Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom fell one out shy of a quality start, but he stretched out to 76 pitches (50 strikes) in his second outing of the season. He's already racked up 18 strikeouts in 10.2 innings. In Sunday's start, he averaged 99.1 mph on his fastball and topped out at 101.6 mph, so there's little to be concerned about with his velocity. He'll carry a 2.53 ERA and 0.47 WHIP into his next start, currently projected as a home outing against the Phillies next weekend.
Aug 3, 2022
Sterling season debut
deGrom did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits while striking out six and walking none over five innings against Washington.
ANALYSIS
deGrom pitched well in his season debut, throwing 46 of 59 pitches for strikes across five frames. It is clear the flamethrower will be on a pitch count after returning from a lengthy absence, otherwise the Mets would have let him continue mowing down Washington's offense. deGrom threw 13 pitches at 100 MPH or higher and topped out at 101.6 MPH. His fastball averaged 99.7 MPH in the game.
Aug 2, 2022
Activated for season debut
The Mets reinstated deGrom (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list to start Tuesday's game in Washington.
ANALYSIS
Just as the team had announced a few days earlier, deGrom will make his first start with the Mets since July 7, 2021 after he recently wrapped up a four-outing rehab assignment in the minors. In his final outing with Triple-A Syracuse on July 27, deGrom built up to four innings and 67 pitches, so he could have some light restrictions with his workload as he returns to the mound for the big club. The two-time Cy Young Award winner will line up for a two-start week, with his second turn set to come Sunday versus Atlanta at Citi Field.
Jul 30, 2022
Making 2022 debut Tuesday
DeGrom (shoulder) will start Tuesday's game against the Nationals, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom made four starts during his recent rehab assignment, and he posted a 2.84 ERA and 0.87 WHIP in 12.2 innings. While he gave up four runs in four innings during Wednesday's outing, he felt good afterward and will make his 2022 debut Tuesday on an extra day of rest. The right-hander threw 67 pitches during his most recent start, so it's possible that he'll have his workload monitored during Tuesday's matchup in Washington.
Jul 27, 2022
Should make 2022 debut next week
Manager Buck Showalter said after deGrom's (shoulder) rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A Syracuse that he expects the right-hander to return from the 60-day injured list to make his next appearance with the big club, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom's fourth rehab start and second in a row with Syracuse didn't go well from a results standpoint -- he served up four earned runs on four hits and three walks over four innings -- but Showalter noted that the two-time Cy Young Award winner "felt good" physically, which is the most important thing. Despite laboring through his four innings, deGrom struck out six batters and showed more efficiency late in the start than he did earlier in the day. He ultimately finished with 67 pitches, so he could face a slight workload restriction if he does in fact come off the IL to make his first start with the Mets since July 7, 2021. Anthony DiComo of MLB.com suggests that Tuesday's game in Washington is the likely target for deGrom's debut in order to give him an extra day of rest beyond the standard four in between starts.
Jul 22, 2022
Making another rehab start
DeGrom (shoulder) will require at least one more rehab start prior to rejoining the Mets' rotation, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom tossed 60 pitches over five innings during a simulated game Thursday, but the team apparently doesn't yet consider him ready to return. The right-hander will be sidelined for at least one more turn through the rotation but should be in the mix to rejoin the team sometime in early August. Prior to his rehab start next week, deGrom will work out at Citi Field on Sunday.
Jul 21, 2022
Throws sim game
DeGrom (shoulder) threw 60 pitches across five innings in a simulated game Thursday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom felt good after the session, which alleviates some of the concern that emerged when he experienced shoulder soreness Sunday. It's unclear if deGrom will make one additional rehab start prior to joining the Mets, or if he will be a candidate to start a game during the team's series against the Yankees -- which is in line with his original timeline.
Jul 19, 2022
Experiencing mild shoulder soreness
DeGrom (shoulder) had his simulated game pushed back from Tuesday to Thursday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After he experienced mild soreness around his shoulder Sunday, DeGrom was able to play catch Monday and Tuesday and will now pitch his simulated outing Thursday. The push back was reported to be "out of an abundance of caution" by the Mets. DeGrom will still likely make his season debut soon after the All-Star break, but his return could be closer to the end of July or early August at this point.
Jul 16, 2022
Scheduled to throw live BP
DeGrom (shoulder) is slated to throw live BP on Tuesday, Deesha Thosar of FoxSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom has made three rehab starts over the last few weeks, and he stretched out to 42 pitches during his most recent outing. His live BP over the All-Star break will serve as his fourth rehab appearance, and he'll be re-evaluated afterward. If he feels good following the throwing session, deGrom should be in the mix to rejoin the Mets' rotation shortly after the All-Star break.
Jul 14, 2022
Stretches out to 42 pitches
DeGrom (shoulder) threw four innings while allowing an unearned run and striking out four in a rehab appearance at Triple-A Syracuse, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom added an extra inning to his workload from his previous rehab outing, and he needed only 42 pitches to complete his four innings. He is expected to throw a simulated game at some point during the All-Star break, and his status will be decided from there. Mike Puma of the New York Post reports that the team has discussed either July 24 or July 26 as potential days for deGrom to make his season debut.
Jul 11, 2022
Making rehab start Thursday
DeGrom (shoulder) is scheduled to make a rehab start at Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was targeting Wednesday or Thursday for his third rehab start, and the team will ultimately choose the latter option so he has an additional day to rest before pitching for the Triple-A club. He's expected to throw at least 50 pitches during Thursday's outing, and it's not yet clear whether he'll make a fourth rehab start or whether his next appearance after Thursday will be with the major-league club.
Jul 9, 2022
Set for next rehab start
DeGrom (shoulder) will make a rehab start either Wednesday or Thursday with Triple-A Syracuse, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom managed to throw 36 pitches in the second start of his rehab assignment Friday, and he's expected to clear 50 pitches with Syracuse in his upcoming appearance. It's unclear whether the Mets may elect to activate deGrom and limit his pitch count after that outing, or if he will make a final rehab start before rejoining the big-league club.
Jul 9, 2022
Fans six in rehab start
DeGrom (shoulder) tossed 36 pitches over three innings in Friday's rehab start with Single-A St. Lucie, striking out six batters, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander topped out at 101 mph with his fastball as he thoroughly overmatched Florida State League batters. "It felt really good, was just happy to get out there and get three complete innings," deGrom said afterward. The upcoming minor-league All-Star breaks complicate the timetable for his return to the Mets' rotation, but deGrom appears to be on track to rejoin the club before July is over.
Jul 5, 2022
Next rehab start coming Friday
DeGrom (shoulder) is penciled in to make the second start of his rehab assignment Friday with Single-A St. Lucie, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
According to DiComo, the Mets intend to keep deGrom on a five-day rest schedule between his outings, at least for the early portion of a rehab assignment that will likely consist of between three and five starts. With that in mind, deGrom doesn't look as though he'll be on pace to return from the 60-day injured list prior to the All-Star break, but he could be an option for the Mets rotation when the team opens its second-half schedule July 22 with a three-game series with the Padres. DeGrom looked about as good as the Mets could have hoped in his first rehab start with St. Lucie on Sunday, when he struck out five of the six batters he faced while topping 100 miles per hour on seven of his 24 pitches.
Jul 4, 2022
Excels in rehab start
DeGrom (shoulder) struck out five of the six batters he faced Sunday in his first rehab start with Single-A St. Lucie. He hit the other batter he faced with a pitch.
ANALYSIS
Though his performance comes with the caveat that he was facing off against a lineup most of teenagers or players in their first year of professional ball, deGrom certainly looked to be in peak form during the 24-pitch outing, which was his first regular-season start at any level since July 7, 2021. He threw 18 strikes on the afternoon, eclipsing 100 miles per hour on seven of his pitches, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. DiComo also notes that team officials anticipate DeGrom will need 3-to-5 rehab starts while he goes through a spring training-style ramp-up program, in which case he wouldn't line up for a start before the Mets' final game of the first half July 17 in Chicago if he sticks to a four-day rest schedule. However, if deGrom is able to stretch out to five innings during his rehab assignment and remains free of setbacks to his right shoulder, he should be ready to make a start during the Mets' first series out of the All-Star break.
Jul 2, 2022
Set for rehab start Sunday
DeGrom (shoulder) will make a rehab start Sunday for Single-A St. Lucie, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After throwing 27 pitches in a live batting practice session Wednesday, deGrom is ready to return to a live setting. DeGrom was shut down just before the start of the season with a stress reaction in his right scapula, and the Mets have taken a cautious approach to his rehab, building the all-world starter back up slowly. Expect him to make more than one rehab start in the minors. If all goes well, it's reasonable to think he could make one start for the big-league team before the All-Star break, but that's not a guarantee.
Jun 29, 2022
Close to rehab assignment
DeGrom (shoulder) threw 27 pitches during live batting practice Wednesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom has been facing hitters for just over a week, and he was able to increase his pitch count during Wednesday's throwing session. Manager Buck Showalter said that the team will meet to determine the right-hander's next steps Thursday but indicated that deGrom is close to beginning a rehab assignment.
Jun 25, 2022
Throws 20 pitches Saturday
DeGrom (shoulder) threw 20 pitches over one inning during live BP on Saturday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom faced live hitters for the second time during Saturday's throwing session, and he's slated to throw at least one more live BP in the coming days. Following his next throwing session, the Mets plan to evaluate whether the right-hander is ready to begin a minor-league rehab assignment.
Jun 24, 2022
Throwing another live BP
DeGrom (shoulder) is scheduled to throw live batting practice Saturday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The 34-year-old faced live batters for the first time Tuesday, and he'll continue ramping up his workload. Assuming he avoids any setbacks, deGrom could require a couple more sessions of live BP before advancing to a minor-league rehab assignment, which could happen within the next week or two.
Jun 21, 2022
Faces live hitters
DeGrom (shoulder) threw a session of live batting practice Tuesday with no issues, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander, who turned 34 years old Sunday, has been throwing bullpen sessions for the past couple weeks, and he's now advancing to facing live hitters. DeGrom should continue ramping up his pitch count in the coming days before embarking on a minor-league rehab assignment.
Jun 14, 2022
Advancing in throwing program
DeGrom (shoulder) will progress to an "up-and-down" bullpen session Friday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Following Tuesday's 30-pitch bullpen session, deGrom said "everything feels good" and that "hopefully" it wouldn't be too much longer before he was able to return to game action. This was the fourth bullpen session he had thrown since beginning mound work and the up-and-down session will be a little closer to recreating a game environment.
Jun 10, 2022
Slated to throw another bullpen
DeGrom (shoulder) will throw a third bullpen session Saturday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom has thrown two bullpens over the last week, and he'll pitch off a mound once again Saturday. The right-hander still has to build up his pitch count, so it's not yet clear when he'll be able to face live hitters. However, it's encouraging that he's been able to throw regular bullpens sessions recently.
Jun 4, 2022
Throws bullpen Saturday
DeGrom (shoulder) threw a 19-pitch bullpen session Saturday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom's bullpen session Saturday was the first time he threw off a mound since spring training, and he threw 19 fastballs at moderate intensity. The right-hander was throwing off flat ground for several weeks, and he'll now shift his focus to ramping up his intensity. While Saturday's bullpen session was a significant step in the right direction for deGrom, he still has several hurdles to clear before he's in the mix to rejoin the Mets' rotation.
Jun 3, 2022
Could be nearing mound work
DeGrom (shoulder) remained behind in New York for the Mets' current road trip, but he could begin throwing off a mound before the team returns home June 14, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander is currently still throwing off flat ground as the Mets proceed very cautiously with his recovery from a stress reaction in his right scapula. There had originally been plans for deGrom to accompany the team on its 11-day west coast swing, but pitching coach Jeremy Hefner determined he wouldn't be able to give the 33-year-old's rehab the attention it deserved during the trip. "The right decision is, it's better for [deGrom] to get his work done there," manager Buck Showalter said Thursday. "Just a lot better equipped and manpower and the things that are going on that he needs to get done." Showalter indicated Thursday that deGrom could be ready to do mound work before the Mets got back to Queens, but his eventual return to the big-league rotation remains far off.
May 28, 2022
Extends throwing distance
DeGrom (shoulder) extended his throwing distance to 135 feet this week and said he feels "completely normal," Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom continues to make gradual progress as he works his way back from the stress reaction on his scapula which has so far prevented him from making his season debut. He still has several more steps to go, and his recent health history hardly inspires confidence, but it's undoubtedly a good sign to see that he's progressing and feels healthy.
May 24, 2022
Nearing mound work
DeGrom (shoulder) is playing catch from about 100 feet Tuesday and could begin throwing bullpen sessions as early as this weekend, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
The 33-year-old continue to expand his throwing distance and is now closing in on his return to mound work. The right-hander underwent an MRI last week which showed "continued healing in the scapula," and he's been ramping up the intensity of his throwing program as a result. There's no clear timeline for deGrom's return to game action, but it's clear he's progressing in his rehab work and appears possible he could be back before the All-Star break.
May 17, 2022
MRI shows continued healing
DeGrom's MRI revealed continued healing in his scapula, David Lennon of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
The news is definitely what the Mets wanted to hear, but that doesn't mean deGrom's return is anything close to imminent. He still has to go through a full spring training buildup process, though he's at least been throwing in a limited capacity recently.
May 16, 2022
Another MRI Monday
DeGrom (shoulder) is scheduled to have another MRI on Monday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The 33-year-old started playing catch in the past week or so and will now receive another round of testing three weeks after his last round of imaging. deGrom is still working his back from a stress reaction on his scapula, but Monday's MRI will provide a useful update on where he is in his recovery. The right-hander is currently expected to return around mid-to-late July, though the results from the imaging will bring more clarity to his timetable.
May 10, 2022
Throwing from 60 feet
DeGrom (shoulder) recently began a throwing program and is playing catch from 60 feet, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The 33-year-old was transferred to the 60-day injured list Tuesday is expected to be sidelined through the All-Star break, but it's still good news he's begun a throwing program after being shut down for over a month. There could be another update on deGrom's status next week since he's scheduled to undergo another MRI.
May 10, 2022
Likely out until All-Star break
The Mets transferred deGrom (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Tuesday. The two-time Cy Young Award winner is expected to remain out through the All-Star break, according to Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
New York has been deliberately evasive about offering up a timeline for deGrom's return since he was diagnosed April 1 with a stress reaction of his right scapula. At the time, deGrom was scheduled to be shut down from throwing for four weeks, but more than five weeks later, he has yet to resume an on-field baseball activities. The Mets haven't suggested that deGrom has hit a snag in his recovery, as he's simply not far along in the rehab process at this stage for the club to have any confidence that he would miss fewer than 60 days. He'll technically be eligible to come off the IL in early June, but Thosar suggests deGrom's return date will likely trend closer to mid-to-late July. A more definitive target for deGrom's return should come into focus as he makes his way through a throwing program, but it's still unclear when he'll even be ready to resume playing catch.
Apr 25, 2022
MRI shows improvement
An MRI on Monday showed deGrom (shoulder) had "considerable healing of the stress reaction on his scapula," Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. He's been cleared for "loading and strengthening of the shoulder."
ANALYSIS
The team's release mentioned nothing about when the right-hander might return to throwing, but he is moving in the right direction. DeGrom set to undergo another MRI in approximately three weeks to determine the next steps in his rehab.
Apr 24, 2022
MRI coming Monday
Mets manager Buck Showalter clarified that deGrom (shoulder) underwent a CT scan Friday and is due for an MRI on Monday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Showalter seemed to suggest Saturday that deGrom received both the CT scan and MRI earlier in the weekend, but the follow-up imaging won't in fact come until Monday. DeGrom is just over three weeks into a four-week shutdown period after he was diagnosed with a stress reaction of his right scapula April 1, so he could be cleared to begin a throwing program within the next few days if the MRI reveals that he's made good progress in his recovery. Even if the MRI yields good news, deGrom will likely need at least three weeks to get his arm conditioned for a starter's workload, so he's unlikely to make his 2022 debut until the second half of May, at the earliest.
Apr 15, 2022
Slated for follow-up MRI
DeGrom (shoulder) will undergo a follow-up MRI on April 25, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom is in the midst of a four-week shutdown due to a stress reaction in his right scapula, and his MRI should provide an idea of his recovery progress while helping to pinpoint his diagnosis. The right-hander got a bone scan recently to confirm the original diagnosis of a stress reaction. A timetable for deGrom's return to game action is unlikely to be revealed until he's cleared to resume throwing.
Apr 7, 2022
Placed on IL
The Mets officially placed deGrom (shoulder) on the 10-day injured list Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Leading up to Opening Day, the only drama pertaining to deGrom's placement on the IL was whether the Mets would place him on the 10-day IL, or stash him on the 60-day IL to open up a spot on the 40-man roster. The Mets chose to go the former route, but that doesn't necessarily mean deGrom is a safe bet to avoid an eventual move to the 60-day IL, which will be dictated by how he progresses in the weeks to come. The Mets already announced April 1 that deGrom will be shut down from throwing for at least four weeks with a stress reaction in his right scapula, and he'll almost certainly need at least an additional 2-to-3 weeks beyond that to build up for starting duty.
Apr 1, 2022
Shut down for four weeks
DeGrom (shoulder) was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his right scapula and will be shut down from throwing for four weeks, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander will obviously miss Opening Day and is set to be re-evaluated after a month. DeGrom appeared to enter spring training healthy after battling elbow issues last season, but the stress reaction will instead cost him a significant portion of the 2022 campaign. Even if the 33-year-old starts throwing again immediately after the four-week shutdown, he'll likely be sidelined for another month as he builds his arm back up. Tylor Megill and David Peterson are the primary option to round out the Mets' starting rotation in the wake of the news.
Apr 1, 2022
Officially scratched Friday
DeGrom (shoulder) was officially scratched from his scheduled Grapefruit League start Friday and will undergo an MRI, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The 33-year-old had experienced some shoulder tightness while playing catch Thursday, and his availability for Opening Day is now in jeopardy. DeGrom was limited to 15 starts last season due to elbow issues, and a shoulder injury is an ominous way to begin the 2022 campaign. He should be considered day-to-day until the team provides more information on the injury.
Mar 31, 2022
Shoulder issues reappear
DeGrom is experiencing shoulder tightness and will be evaluated Friday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom battled elbow issues to end the 2021 season, though he appeared to be fully healthy for the upcoming campaign. He had already been named the Opening Day starter and reportedly felt fine after throwing two scoreless innings in his Grapefruit League debut. It's unclear whether the issue will cost deGrom extended time, though his status to begin the campaign is certainly in doubt.
Mar 24, 2022
Dominant in spring debut
DeGrom struck out five batters over two innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros. He gave up only one hit without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
It was the first time since July 7 deGrom was on a mound in a game situation due to lingering elbow issues in the latter half of 2021, but the 33-year-old looked every inch an ace in his return. According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, deGrom touched 99 mph with his fastball Tuesday, but the Mets limited him to only 30 pitches as they proceed cautiously with the two-time Cy Young Award winner. "I was nervous, to be honest with you," deGrom said afterward. "It's reassuring to go out there and feel completely fine." The right-hander made a tweak to his workout routine this offseason in an effort to stay healthier, and while it's early, so far the results are promising.

Locked in for Opening Day
Manager Buck Showalter said Monday that deGrom is in line to start the Mets' Opening Day game April 7 in Washington, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
That deGrom was awarded the Opening Day nod is less of a surprise than the fact that the Mets confirmed after his first bullpen session of spring training that he would be ready to go for the start of the season, coming off a 2021 campaign in which he was shut down after the All-Star break following a series of forearm/elbow-related setbacks, including a diagnosis of a partially torn UCL. The extended time off during the second half of last season and the offseason has apparently allowed the ligament to heal, but that doesn't necessarily mean deGrom is a good bet to stay healthy for the balance of 2022. That being said, deGrom should profile as baseball's best pitcher whenever he's available, as he was a shoo-in for his third Cy Young Award through 15 starts last season until injuries thwarted those plans.

Completes bullpen session
DeGrom (elbow) threw his first bullpen session of Mets camp Monday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
After playing catch upon reporting to camp Sunday, DeGrom's ability to get back on the mound early in camp seemingly supports the notion that he's healthy again after inflammation and a partial UCL tear of his right elbow kept him from after the All-Star break last season. The Mets are still likely to take a cautious approach with deGrom during the Grapefruit League schedule and save most of his bullets for the games that count, but barring any setbacks with the elbow in the next few weeks, he should be ready to take the hill for the April 7 season opener in Washington. Before he was shut down last summer, deGrom was in the midst of a season for the ages with a 7-2 record, 1.08 ERA, 0.55 WHIP and 146 strikeouts in 92 innings through 15 starts.
Mar 13, 2022
Has thrown off mound
General manager Billy Eppler and manager Buck Showalter said Sunday that deGrom (elbow) has thrown off a mound and there is no lingering concern about his health, despite the fact he has not pitched in a game since July 7, 2021, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
We won't really know how truthful the team is being until deGrom pitches in a spring game, but if he has indeed thrown off a mound, that's a good sign. Eppler noted that he "hasn't had to debrief with trainers" about deGrom's health. Given the fact that there were reports that deGrom suffered a partial UCL tear last season, fantasy managers should still be wary of the ace's health outlook heading into the year.
Sep 28, 2021
Won't pitch again this season
DeGrom (elbow) will not pitch again this season, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom reportedly hasn't suffered a setback, as he felt fine following a side session Monday. Manager Luis Rojas indicated that deGrom would return if they Mets still had anything to play for, but since that's no longer the case, the team decided that wasn't any reason to risk anything with their ace. Given that he's effectively healthy at this point, however, he should be in line for a normal offseason.
Sep 21, 2021
Still expects to return
DeGrom (elbow) threw a 20-pitch bullpen session Tuesday and still expects to return before the end of the season, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom only resumed mound work one week ago, and there are less than two weeks remaining in the regular season, but he's still evidently expecting to return in some capacity. He'll throw another bullpen session later this week, which could theoretically give him time to return and make an appearance or two, though he'll likely be on a significantly reduced pitch count if that happens.
Sep 17, 2021
Side session on tap
DeGrom (elbow) will throw a side session within the next couple days, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 33-year-old resumed mound work Tuesday with a 10-pitch session, and he'll continue ramping up his workload this weekend. There's just over two weeks left in the regular season, so deGrom is running out of time to make his return before the end of the campaign.
Sep 14, 2021
Resumes mound work
DeGrom (elbow) threw 10 pitches off a mound Tuesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It was a light session for the veteran right-hander as he continues his return from a partial UCL tear in his right elbow, but a return to mound work is still a significant step forward in his recovery. DeGrom is attempting to make a return before the end of the regular season, but time is running out with less than three weeks to go in the campaign.
Sep 12, 2021
Nearing mound work
Manager Luis Rojas said Sunday that he's hopeful deGrom (elbow) will be able to resume mound work this week, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom threw from 120 feet off flat ground last week, and resuming mound work would be a clear step in the right direction. The right-hander is running out of time to return in 2021 with just three weeks remaining in the regular season, but Rojas remains hopeful that deGrom will be able to make an appearance or two late in the year.
Sep 8, 2021
Increases throwing distance
DeGrom (elbow) increased his throwing distance to 120 feet Tuesday, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom has continued to throw off flat ground recently, but he'll have a day off Wednesday. The right-hander doesn't have a clear timetable to resume mound work as he continues to recover from a partial tear of his right UCL, but he's made good progress across the last few weeks.
Sep 7, 2021
Injury details revealed
The Mets revealed Tuesday that deGrom had been battling a partial tear of his right UCL, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
The team had remained mostly positive about deGrom's outlook through multiple MRIs, but the fact that he landed on the 60-day injured list in late August made it clear that he was dealing with a fairly significant injury. General manager Sandy Alderson expressed more optimism Tuesday, noting that issue resolved itself and the ligament is still intact. That's certainly positive news, but the knowledge that he had indeed been dealing with at least a small tear makes it tough to have confidence in his health going forward.
Sep 4, 2021
Still 10 days from bullpen sessions
DeGrom (elbow) is still likely about 10 days from advancing to bullpen sessions, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
An MRI near the end of August yielded positive results for deGrom, who is recovering from inflammation in his elbow. He is said to be feeling good while throwing on flat ground at 75 feet. However, deGrom still must extend out to 120 feet and show he can handle that before the Mets sign off on him throwing from a mound, and that ramp-up will likely take until mid-September. He would then have to complete multiple bullpen sessions and live BP sessions before returning to action. Per DiComo, the Mets don't expect deGrom to make more than a start or two at the end of the regular season, and any remaining outings for deGrom are likely to be abbreviated.
Aug 25, 2021
MRI brings positive results
The Mets are optimistic that deGrom (elbow) will be ready to make his return from the 60-day injured list by the second half of September after the MRI he underwent Wednesday revealed nothing concerning, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The club's optimism about deGrom's health was seemingly verified by the 33-year-old getting on the field Wednesday to play catch in what marked his first throwing activity since late July. The Mets likely won't pinpoint a more concrete target date for deGrom's return until he advances to facing hitters in his rehab, but before that happens, he'll need to extend his throwing distance off flat ground and complete multiple bullpen sessions. Fantasy managers will have to weigh whether stashing deGrom on the bench or in an injured reserve slot is worthwhile for what will likely be 2-to-3 high-impact starts -- at most -- for the remainder of the season.
Aug 25, 2021
Resumes throwing
DeGrom (elbow) played catch off flat ground Wednesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was expected to remain idle for at least a few more days after he was sent in for an MRI earlier Wednesday, and although the results of his tests aren't yet known, he apparently received positive enough news to start throwing again for the first time since late July. While deGrom's activity Wednesday represents a step in the right direction, the two-time Cy Young winner still has several hurdles to clear in the recovery process from the right elbow injury before a target date for his return is established. Since the Mets moved deGrom to the 60-day injured list Friday, he won't be eligible to return to action until Sept. 13 at the earliest.
Aug 24, 2021
Set for another MRI
DeGrom (elbow) is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Wednesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander is expected to start a throwing program if the scans bring good news. He transferred to the 60-day injured list last week and will be eligible to be activated Sept. 13, but he won't be ready to return at that point. If deGrom's elbow doesn't show enough progress during the MRI on Wednesday there's a strong chance he's shut down for the rest of the 2021 campaign.
Aug 20, 2021
Shifts to 60-day IL
DeGrom (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday, though the Mets said in a press release his "status and return timeline remain unchanged," Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander will now be eligible to return from the injured list Sept. 13, but that won't affect his return timeline since he's already expected to remain shut down from throwing until at least Aug. 27. A return in mid-September appears to be the best-case scenario for deGrom, and his recovery timetable won't come into focus until he starts up his throwing program.
Aug 18, 2021
Timeline remains same after checkup
DeGrom was told after his doctor's appointment Monday that the inflammation in his right elbow is improving, but he'll remain shut down from throwing until at least Aug. 27 before being re-evaluated by the Mets' medical staff, Tim Healey of the Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
In his meeting with Dr. David Altchek, deGrom was essentially recommended to follow the two-week shutdown plan recommended by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the orthopedic surgeon whom the right-hander sought for a second opinion last week. Even if he's cleared to begin throwing by the end of August, deGrom will likely need a couple weeks to get his arm conditioned for starting duty, so a mid-September return from the 10-day injured list could be a best-case scenario for the two-time Cy Young Award winner.
Aug 13, 2021
Shut down two more weeks
DeGrom (elbow) will remain shut down for at least two more weeks after being reevaluated Friday, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander underwent an MRI that revealed reduced inflammation in his elbow, but the injury still requires more time to heal. If cleared to resume throwing after the two-week period, deGrom is looking at a potential return in late September, at the earliest, given how long it would take to build his arm back up in a throwing program.
Aug 12, 2021
Nearing another MRI
DeGrom (elbow) will undergo another MRI in the coming days, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom's second MRI has been expected after he was shut down at the end of July due to right forearm inflammation. If the exam comes back clean, the right-hander will restart a throwing program, and a better timetable for his return would come into focus based on how he feels after throwing. The timing of deGrom's next step depends on the results of the MRI, but he's close to resuming activities.
Aug 3, 2021
Another MRI in 10 days
DeGrom (elbow) will get another MRI in about 10 days, and if he is cleared to resume throwing at that time, he will need time to ramp back up before returning to the big-league rotation, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
This is a separate issue from the forearm tightness that originally led to him landing on the injured list on July 18. DeGrom said a bone spur has been ruled out and there isn't ligament damage, so the official injury designation is elbow inflammation. When asked Tuesday if he was concerned that he might miss the rest of the season, deGrom said, "I would say no, not right now." It sounds like he will need good results on the MRI around Aug. 13 in order to return by early September.
Jul 30, 2021
Facing shutdown
DeGrom (forearm) underwent an MRI on Friday that revealed right forearm inflammation, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom will be shut down from throwing for two weeks before he's re-evaluated by the medical staff. While the right-hander had been throwing side sessions recently, the Mets are now targeting a return to game action sometime in September.
Jul 28, 2021
Bullpen session set for Thursday
Mets manager Luis Rojas said deGrom (forearm) is scheduled to throw a light bullpen session Thursday, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom experienced no renewed pain with his right forearm while throwing off flat ground from 90 feet Wednesday, so he'll take another step forward in his recovery process by tossing a side session. The Mets will observe the workout before deciding whether deGrom will require another bullpen session or if he's ready to resume facing hitters in live batting practice. Assuming he can avoid any further setbacks, deGrom looks as though he could be on track to rejoin the New York rotation during the first week of August.
Jul 26, 2021
Another side session on tap
DeGrom (forearm) will throw another light side session Tuesday or Wednesday, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom threw off a mound Sunday and felt good after playing catch Monday. While Manager Luis Rojas said after Sunday's mound session that he didn't know the right-hander's next step in his recovery, he'll throw off a mound at least once more before the team makes a decision. The Mets reportedly intend to have deGrom make a minor-league rehab start before he's activated from the IL, so he could be sidelined until sometime in early August.
Jul 25, 2021
Gets back on mound
DeGrom (forearm) threw off a mound Sunday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
The Mets haven't disclosed whether deGrom completed a true bullpen session, but even light throwing off the mound would mark the first time that he's toed the rubber since being shut down more than a week ago with right forearm tightness. Before making his return from the injured list, deGrom will likely need to complete at least one more bullpen session and face hitters in a live batting practice session or simulated game. He could return to make a start in next weekend's series versus the Reds in a best-case scenario, but it's more likely deGrom's absence stretches into August.
Jul 24, 2021
No timetable for return to mound
Manager Luis Rojas said Saturday it's unclear when deGrom (forearm) will begin throwing bullpens, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The righty has been playing catch and receiving treatment for his sore forearm, but he doesn't appear particularly close to continuing his throwing progression. Additional information about deGrom and when he might return from the injured list should become available in the next week or so. At this rate, his absence may be long enough that a rehab.assignment will be necessary.
Jul 23, 2021
Continues playing catch
DeGrom (forearm) played catch again Friday but has yet to advance to mound work, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom has battled multiple nagging injuries throughout the year, though you wouldn't know it when looking at his 1.08 ERA and 0.55 WHIP through 15 starts. He's in the middle of his longest absence thus far, and while the fact that he's yet to throw off a mound means his return to game action isn't imminent, it's certainly a positive that he continues to be able to throw in some capacity.
Jul 22, 2021
Resumes throwing
DeGrom (forearm) threw off flat ground at Citi Field on Thursday, SNY reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom has been on the injured list since Sunday due to right forearm tightness, but he had been improving recently while he was shut down. The Mets were insistent that the right-hander wouldn't resume throwing until his forearm tightness had completely dissipated, so it appears as though he's in a good place in his recovery. A better idea of deGrom's return timetable could come into focus once he's able to ramp up his intensity.
Jul 20, 2021
Improving but not throwing
DeGrom (forearm) is improving but has yet to resume throwing, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom has battled nagging injuries throughout the year but previously hadn't gone more than 15 days between starts. He'll surpass that mark Friday, and it remains unclear exactly when the Mets expect him to pitch again. He's currently back in New York continuing to receive treatment.
Jul 18, 2021
Heading to IL
The Mets placed deGrom (forearm) on the 10-day injured list Sunday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
The ace will not resume throwing until his right forearm tightness has completely dissipated. How long that will take is unclear at this time, but deGrom has dealt with enough minor arm injuries in 2021 that the Mets are likely to be especially cautious with timing his return. No corresponding transaction has been announced yet, but it figures to be a pitcher replacing deGrom on the active roster.
Jul 17, 2021
Dealing with forearm tightness
DeGrom is getting treatment for forearm tightness, but an MRI did not reveal any structural damage, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
His side session was halted Friday due to the issue and he is currently in a no-throw period. Given the results of the MRI, the team is treating him for forearm tightness, and he is considered day-to-day. He has been a quick healer in the past, but he also dealt with elbow and shoulder issues in June, so perhaps everything is starting to take its toll.
Jul 11, 2021
Won't pitch before All-Star break
As expected, deGrom will not pitch Sunday against the Pirates, Tim Healey of Newsday reports
ANALYSIS
DeGrom started the first game of the Mets' doubleheader Wednesday against Milwaukee, so it was expected that he would not appear again before the All-Star break. He's been excellent throughout the entire first half of the season, maintaining a 1.08 ERA and 0.54 WHIP with 146 strikeouts across 92 innings.
Jul 7, 2021
Strikes out 10 in Game 1
DeGrom allowed two runs on four hits and struck out 10 in seven innings, taking a no-decision in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader versus Milwaukee.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander was effective Wednesday despite allowing multiple home runs for the first time in 15 starts this season. DeGrom gave up solo shots to Luis Urias and Jace Peterson, and that nearly saddled him with the loss were it not for Jose Peraza's game-tying homer in the bottom of the seventh. This was the third start in a row deGrom has allowed multiple runs, but he still has an outstanding 1.08 ERA, 0.54 WHIP and 146:11 K:BB across 92 innings. His next start is expected to come after the All-Star break.
Jul 6, 2021
Tuesday's game postponed
DeGrom won't start as scheduled Tuesday against the Brewers since the game was postponed due to rain, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
New York attempted to wait out the rain and get the game in Tuesday, but the contest was called off more than two hours after the scheduled start time. The game will be made up via a doubleheader Wednesday, and deGrom likely will start one of those contests. As a result of the postponement, it should be his final start before the All-Star break.
Jul 2, 2021
Fans 14 in no-decision
deGrom allowed three earned runs on five hits while striking out 14 across seven innings in the loss to Atlanta on Thursday. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
deGrom allowed his first home run in his last seven starts in the first inning to Austin Riley. All three of his runs allowed were in the first inning. deGrom struck out at least 14 in four games this season. Despite allowing three earned runs for the first time this season, the future Hall-of-Famer is leading all of baseball with a 0.95 ERA and a 14.40 K/9. His next start is scheduled for Tuesday against the Brewers.
Jun 26, 2021
Scoreless streak ends
DeGrom didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Phillies, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander hadn't been tagged for a run since May 25, but deGrom saw his scoreless streak end at 31 innings on an RBI single by Nick Maton in the second frame. In fact, this was the first time in 2021 he's allowed more than one earned run in an outing. The Mets ace still delivered his ninth quality start of the season, and he sports a 0.69 ERA and absurd 122:11 K:BB through 78 innings on the year.
Jun 21, 2021
Dominant again Monday
DeGrom (7-2) picked up the win in Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader against Atlanta, striking out two while allowing one hit and two walks across five scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
Prior to Sunday it wasn't even known if deGrom would be able to start Monday after he exited his outing last Wednesday with shoulder soreness. The ace right-hander was indeed able to toe the rubber for the first half of the twin bill and was magnificent once again. He was limited to just 70 pitches (44) strikes, but he said the short out outing was simply because the club "didn't want to overdo it" after last week's scare, per Tim Britton of The Athletic. DeGrom has remarkably not allowed a run in his last five starts, over which he's punched out 43 while allowing a total of seven hits and three walks. He'll look to stay on a roll when he takes the ball this weekend against the Phillies, where he should have the leeway to pitch deeper into the ballgame.
Jun 21, 2021
Confirmed for Game 1 of twin bill
The Mets confirmed that deGrom (shoulder) will start the first game of Monday's doubleheader with Atlanta, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Though deGrom relayed after playing catch Sunday that he would be ready to go on regular rest for the first game of the series with Atlanta, the Mets weren't willing to confirm his availability until re-evaluating him earlier Monday. With deGrom's right shoulder checking out fine, he's not expected to face any major restrictions in his 12th start of the season. Though deGrom's last two outings have been cut short due to injuries, he was somehow even more dominant than usual in both starts, covering nine innings between them and striking out 18 while allowing no runs on one hit and no walks. Assuming he's able to make it through Monday's start unscathed, deGrom will line up for his second start of the week Saturday or Sunday at home versus the Phillies.
Jun 20, 2021
Ready to go for Monday
DeGrom (shoulder) confirmed after playing catch Sunday that he'll be ready to start one game of Monday's doubleheader with the Nationals, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
Despite exiting his second straight start early due to an injury, deGrom's sore right shoulder checked out fine following a full bullpen session Saturday and a round of catch Sunday. The 33-year-old's durability is starting to become more of a concern, but he's left little doubt that he's the game's best pitcher when he's healthy enough to pitch. He'll carry an incredible 0.54 ERA and 0.51 WHIP into his 12th start of the season Monday.
Jun 19, 2021
Plans to pitch Monday
DeGrom (shoulder) threw a full bullpen session Saturday and still plans to start Monday against Atlanta, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom left Wednesday's start due to shoulder soreness after just three innings, but he's thrown on three consecutive days and has felt good after each session. As long as the right-hander isn't sore Sunday, it doesn't appear as though he'll be forced to miss his next turn through the rotation.
Jun 18, 2021
Throws bullpen Friday
DeGrom (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Friday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom exited his Wednesday start after just three innings due to shoulder soreness. Fortunately, the ace right-hander's MRI came back clean and he was able to follow up his Thursday throwing session with a Friday bullpen. Assuming he comes out of Friday's session feeling good, all signs point towards him taking the ball sometime early next week.
Jun 17, 2021
Second opinion encouraging
DeGrom's MRI on his right shoulder was examined by a second doctor who said he isn't concerned with the issue, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom's MRI revealed no structural damage Thursday, and the team had the results examined by two doctors out of an abundance of caution. The Mets are hopeful that the right-hander won't require a trip to the injured list. He played light catch in the outfield ahead of Thursday's game against the Cubs, but manager Luis Rojas wouldn't yet commit to naming deGrom the starter for one of the games in Monday's doubleheader against Atlanta. The 32-year-old is considered day-to-day following his encouraging update.
Jun 17, 2021
MRI comes back clean
DeGrom (shoulder) underwent an MRI on Thursday that revealed no structural damage, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom is slated to receive a second opinion out of an abundance of caution, but his first visit with a doctor Thursday was encouraging. The 32-year-old exited Wednesday's win over the Cubs with right shoulder soreness, but he's remained confident that the issue isn't serious. While the right-hander's second opinion could help determine the extent of the issue, deGrom could line up to start one of the two games in Monday's doubleheader against Atlanta if he continues to receive encouraging news.
Jun 17, 2021
Heading in for MRI
DeGrom is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his sore right shoulder Thursday, but he said after exiting his start in Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Cubs that he's "confident that this is nothing [serious]," Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
In what's becoming a recurring theme, the two-time Cy Young winner once again had another brilliant start cut short due to injury. He struck out eight over three perfect frames and plated a run on a base hit before the shoulder issue resulted in him being pulled in favor of long reliever Sean Reid-Foley. While deGrom expressed frustration about his latest health-related setback, he believes that like the flexor tendinitis and right side tightness he dealt with earlier this season, his shoulder issue is also a minor concern. Tests conducted after Wednesday's game already indicated his throwing shoulder had no decline in strength compared to his left shoulder, leaving deGrom is hopeful that the MRI will reveal no red flags. DeGrom tentatively lines up to make his next start in one of the Mets' doubleheader games versus Atlanta on June 21.
Jun 16, 2021
Exits after three innings
DeGrom (undisclosed) was removed from Wednesday's game against the Cubs after three innings with right shoulder soreness, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Sean Reid-Foley entered the game in relief. DeGrom looked his usual, dominant self, requiring 51 pitches to strike out eight hitters in three perfect frames. He also, of course, added an RBI single. It's certainly concerning that he's dealing with an injury independent of the elbow issue that shortened his previous start. More details about DeGrom's condition and when he will pitch again should become available after the game.
Jun 13, 2021
In clear to start Wednesday
Mets manager Luis Rojas said deGrom (elbow) checked out fine after playing catch Sunday, putting the right-hander on track to make his next turn through the rotation Wednesday against the Cubs, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom cruised through the first six innings during Friday's win over the Padres, but he was pulled after tossing just 80 pitches with what the Mets described as right flexor tendinitis. Though the fact that he's dealing with another elbow-related issue is less than ideal, deGrom seems to have at least temporarily cleared up concern about his health by feeling normal while playing catch two days after exiting his start. DeGrom looks like he'll return to the mound Wednesday without any major workload restrictions.
Jun 12, 2021
MRI comes back clean
DeGrom (elbow) underwent an MRI which came back clean Saturday, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom dominated the Padres through six innings Friday but left after just 80 pitches due to flexor tendinitis in his right elbow. He played catch Saturday, which seemingly backs up his optimism that he'll make his next start, which lines up to happen Wednesday against the Cubs.
Jun 11, 2021
Hopes to make next start
DeGrom (flexor tendonitis) is hopeful that he will make his next start, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He has dealt with elbow issues before without missing much time, and he said his level of concern with this current injury is "not too high". He had been feeling it all week but felt great ahead of Friday's start against the Padres, and indeed he was nearly flawless over six shutout innings prior to exiting with the injury. Trainers apparently did several ligament tests on his elbow and everything checked out OK. If he doesn't end up missing any time, deGrom lines up to start Wednesday at home against the Cubs.
Jun 11, 2021
Brilliant start cut short by injury
DeGrom left Friday's start against the Padres with right flexor tendonitis, which is a finger injury, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
He was nearly unhittable, giving up one hit, zero runs and zero walks while striking out 10 over six frames. DeGrom's pitch count was up to 80, so he probably would have logged one more inning at most even if he was fully healthy. He has come back quickly from injuries that have sounded more serious than this one, so he should be considered questionable for next week's start at home against the Cubs.
Jun 6, 2021
Blanks San Diego
DeGrom (5-2) won Saturday's 4-0 game against the Padres, going seven innings and allowing no runs on three hits and a walk with 11 strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was customarily dominant in this one, cruising through the start aside from a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning. In nine starts this season, DeGrom has allowed no runs in five starts while allowing a single run in the other four and lowered his ERA to 0.62 with the sterling outing. He lines up to face San Diego again at home next Saturday.
Jun 1, 2021
Another dominant effort
DeGrom (4-2) earned the win Monday against the Diamondbacks after tossing six scoreless innings, giving up two hits and fanning eight.
ANALYSIS
It was another dominant effort from the star hurler, who has yet to allow more than one earned run in any of his eight appearances this season. DeGrom also has six quality starts and a sterling 0.71 ERA that, if sustained across an entire season, would be a career-best mark by a wide margin. He will try to extend his blistering start to the season Saturday at the Padres.
May 30, 2021
Sunday's start postponed
DeGrom won't pitch as scheduled Monday against Atlanta since the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Mets owner Steven Cohen reports.
ANALYSIS
It's the second postponement of the series as Friday's contest was also called off due to weather. DeGrom figures to be pushed back a day to start Monday at Arizona, though the team hasn't officially indicated their updated rotation plans.
May 25, 2021
Whiffs nine in no-decision
DeGrom did not factor into the decision during Tuesday's win after holding the Rockies to one run on three hits and no walks while striking out nine across five innings.
ANALYSIS
After missing two Major League starts due to right side tightness, deGrom made a solid return to the rotation. His only damage of the night came via a solo homer by Ryan McMahon in the second inning. Per usual, deGrom found a way to miss bats, throwing 44 of 63 pitches for strikes, including 12 swinging strikes. It's worth noting that he struck out eight of 10 batters during his rehab assignment Thursday and seems to be returning to usual form with his pitch count expected to stretch out in his coming starts. Now sporting a sparkling 0.80 ERA and 0.60 WHIP across seven appearances this year, the 32-year-old is slated for a Sunday matchup at home against Atlanta.
May 25, 2021
Officially activated
DeGrom (side) was officially activated from the injured list Tuesday ahead of his start against the Rockies, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
This comes as no surprise, as it was reported earlier in the week that the Mets' ace would take the ball Tuesday against Colorado. DeGrom is not expected to be on any sort of strict pitch count during his return, though New York will likely be cautious with their star right hander.
May 25, 2021
No pitch count Tuesday
DeGrom (side) won't have an official pitch count when he gets activated from the injured list and returns to the rotation Tuesday, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports. "We want to see how the game goes," manager Luis Rojas said Monday. "He's going to tell us going through the game, going inning by inning . . . [The message is] go ahead and pitch and do what you do and once we get a feel from different views, I think there's when a decision is going to be made."
ANALYSIS
It's reassuring for fantasy GMs who plan on plugging deGrom back into their lineups right away that he won't be held back too much, but it still wouldn't be a surprise if the Mets ace comes out of the game a little earlier than he otherwise might after lasting only five innings in his last outing May 9. On the season, deGrom sports an otherworldly 0.68 ERA, 0.60 WHIP and 65:7 K:BB through 40 frames over six starts.
May 23, 2021
Lines up to start Tuesday
DeGrom (side) threw a bullpen session Sunday and is expected to rejoin the starting rotation Tuesday against the Rockies, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
The 32-year-old made a rehab start with Low-A St. Lucie on Thursday, and it appears he won't require another start in the minors before returning from the shelf. Things won't be official until deGrom is actually activated from the injured list, but he's on track to retake the mound Tuesday for the Mets.
May 21, 2021
Next step still undecided
DeGrom (side) is expected to pitch somewhere Tuesday, but whether that comes against the Rockies or in a rehab game remains to be seen, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was originally expected to miss just one turn in the rotation while dealing with side soreness, but he threw a rehab game Thursday rather than return to the big-league rotation. Previous reports indicated he'd return to the active roster Tuesday, but it looks as though the Mets have yet to make a decision about their ace's immediate future.
May 21, 2021
Next start likely in majors
DeGrom (side) is expected to return from the injured list and make his next start in the majors for the Mets, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The 32-year-old threw 41 pitches over three scoreless frames in a rehab start with Low-A St. Lucie on Thursday, and he's now poised to rejoin the Mets rotation for his next outing. If he remains on a five-day pitching schedule, deGrom will take the mound Tuesday versus the Rockies
May 20, 2021
Successful rehab start
DeGrom (side) threw 41 pitches and struck out eight across three scoreless innings in a rehab outing with Low-A St. Lucie on Thursday, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom also reportedly 102 mph with his fastball. The outing was certainly a strong step towards his return from the injured list, though it's unclear whether the team will want him to complete another rehab outing prior to being activated.
May 19, 2021
Rehab assignment on tap
DeGrom (side) played catch Wednesday and will make a rehab start for Low-A St. Lucie on Thursday, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom threw a bullpen session Tuesday, but the team wants to see him face hitters before he's cleared to return to the Mets' rotation. The right-hander has been progressing well in his recovery, but it's not yet clear when he'll be reinstated from the injured list.
May 18, 2021
Feels good but future uncertain
DeGrom (side) felt good following a bullpen session Tuesday, but the Mets wouldn't commit to activating him off the injured list when first eligible Friday against the Marlins, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom has missed two of his last three turns in the rotation, though the Mets remain confident his side issue isn't a major problem, something an MRI confirmed last week. It's possible he's activated for Friday's start, but manager Luis Rojas mentioned other options such as another bullpen session or a rehab game. The team will likely provide an update Wednesday once it's clear how deGrom's side responded to Tuesday's session.
May 16, 2021
Bullpen session on tap
DeGrom (side) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
The 32-year-old was able to play catch Friday and will return to mound work Tuesday, one week after being placed on the injured list. DeGrom could return from the injured list Friday in Miami if all goes well during the bullpen session.
May 14, 2021
Plays catch
DeGrom (side) played catch Friday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was placed on the injured list Tuesday, meaning he's set to miss his second turn out of three in the rotation due to a side issue. An MRI revealed no injury or even inflammation, and the Mets appear optimistic that he'll return when first eligible next Friday. The fact that he's still able to throw backs that idea up, though the Mets haven't officially set a date for his return.
May 11, 2021
MRI yields good news
DeGrom (side) showed no injury or inflammation in his MRI results, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The righty ace went to the injured list merely as a precaution and, according to the Mets, so his mechanics aren't negatively impacted by his pitching through the tightness. The encouraging MRI results reinforce that DeGrom will likely stay on the IL for the minimum of 10 days and return on May 21.
May 10, 2021
Bound for IL
The Mets plan to place deGrom (side) on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Though the MRI deGrom required following his early exit from Sunday's start against the Diamondbacks revealed no structural issues or long-term concerns, the Mets seem content to err on the side of caution and shut the right-hander down for the week. Assuming his injured right side shows improvement over the next few days while he rests up, deGrom looks like he'll be on track to return from the IL when first eligible May 19 or shortly thereafter.
May 10, 2021
Expected to avoid IL stint
The Mets are optimistic deGrom (side) won't require a stint on the 10-day injured list after the right-hander received a positive initial prognosis after undergoing an MRI on Sunday, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was lifted after five innings during his start Sunday against the Diamondbacks due to right side tightness, an injury that previously resulted in him being scratched from his previously scheduled outing earlier in the week. At this stage, the Mets aren't certain if deGrom will be ready to make his next turn through the rotation in Tampa Bay during the upcoming weekend, but if not, he's unlikely to require much longer than the typical four days' rest between starts. The Mets have off days coming Monday and Thursday, so the Mets could get by with a shortened rotation until next week if deGrom requires more time to heal up from the side injury.
May 9, 2021
Undergoing MRI
DeGrom (side) will undergo an MRI to determine the extent of his injury, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Luis Rojas still classified deGrom's injury as right side tightness following Sunday's early exit. However, Rojas said that the issue is closer to deGrom's lower back than to his lat, which is somewhat encouraging since the right-hander missed his scheduled start Tuesday due to right lat inflammation. A better idea of deGrom's status moving forward could be known once his tests are complete.
May 9, 2021
Side tightness prompts exit
DeGrom was removed from Sunday's start against Arizona as a precaution due to right side tightness, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
It's the same injury that scratched the right-hander from his start last Tuesday, though that was eventually diagnosed as right lat inflammation. The Mets labeling the removal as a precaution should be a good sign, but it doesn't provide much relief with deGrom just missing a start with the same injury.
May 9, 2021
Exits with apparent injury
DeGrom was left Sunday's start against the Diamondbacks with the athletic trainer, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
He missed his last start with right lat inflammation, though it's unclear if he aggravated that injury Sunday or is dealing with a new injury. DeGrom gave up one run on one hit with six strikeouts and three walks over five innings before leaving the game.
May 8, 2021
Cleared to start Sunday
Manager Luis Rojas confirmed deGrom (lat) will start Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks, Steve Gelbs of SportsNet New York reports.
ANALYSIS
The 32-year-old was the expected starter after being scratched from his previously scheduled outing with right lat inflammation, and the Mets have now officially confirmed him as the pitcher for Sunday. DeGrom will look to pick up where he left off with a 0.51 ERA, 0.57 WHIP and 59:4 K:BB over 35 innings through five starts this season.
May 8, 2021
Expected to start Sunday
DeGrom (lat) looks set to start Sunday's game against Arizona, though the Mets are still holding back from officially confirming him, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Lat inflammation scratched deGrom from his scheduled start Tuesday against the Cardinals, but it doesn't look as though he'll have to miss more than one turn in the rotation. He played catch Thursday and threw a bullpen session Friday, getting through both without issues, so he should make his Sunday start unless the inflammation suddenly returns.
May 7, 2021
Feeling good after bullpen
DeGrom (lat) felt "really good" after a bullpen session Friday, per manager Luis Rojas, though he's yet to be officially confirmed as the starter for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday against the Cardinals due to right lat inflammation, though he's avoided a trip to the injured list. It looks as if he's taken the steps necessary to start Sunday, but the Mets have yet to announce their plans.
May 6, 2021
Plays catch as scheduled
DeGrom (lat) played catch as expected Thursday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday against the Cardinals but doesn't appear to be set for a long absence. Assuming his right lat responds well, he's expected to throw a bullpen Friday and take his next turn in the rotation Sunday against the Diamondbacks.
May 5, 2021
Plans to throw Thursday
DeGrom (lat) said he's "feeling good" and plans to play catch Thursday before the Mets determine whether he'll be able to make his next start Sunday against the Diamondbacks, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was scratched from his scheduled turn Tuesday in St. Louis due to right lat inflammation, but the Mets are hopeful he'll be able to avoid a trip to the injured list after an MRI revealed nothing overly concerning. In addition to seeing how he feels during Thursday's throwing session, deGrom will meet with a doctor that day to gain further clarity on how to treat the injury moving forward.
May 4, 2021
Battling inflammation, avoids IL
DeGrom was diagnosed with right lat inflammation Tuesday and won't throw for a few days, but he won't be placed on the injured list, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 32-year-old was scratched from Tuesday's start with what was originally described as tightness in his right side, and an MRI apparently didn't turn up any significant issues. DeGrom's status for his next turn through the rotation this weekend remains up in the air, but for now he won't be placed on the injured list. Miguel Castro will start a bullpen game in his place Tuesday for the Ments.
May 4, 2021
Awaiting MRI results
DeGrom underwent an MRI on his tight right side Tuesday, the results of which have yet to be released, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday against the Cardinals due to the injury, with the Mets electing to go with Miguel Castro to kick off a bullpen game instead. Reports indicate that the Mets believe he won't have to miss more than one start, but a clearer timeline should be available once the test results are made public.
May 4, 2021
Scratched with side tightness
DeGrom was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday against the Cardinals due to side tightness, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The Mets insisted that deGrom was fine when the team pushed his start back from Monday to Tuesday, indicating that they simply wanted to give him an extra day to rest. It now looks as though the decision may have been injury-related, though it's possible the side issue didn't show up until Tuesday. Per Jeff Passan of ESPN.com, deGrom is only expected to miss one start. Miguel Castro will be the team's first pitcher in what looks like a bullpen game Tuesday.
May 1, 2021
Getting extra day
DeGrom will get an extra day of rest and will start Tuesday against the Cardinals, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom should still be able to make two starts next week, as he'll be lined up to face the Diamondbacks on Sunday. He's gotten extra rest twice already this season, and the setup appears to be working, as he owns a remarkable 0.51 ERA, 0.57 WHIP and 59:4 K:BB through five starts.
Apr 28, 2021
Allows one run in hard-luck loss
DeGrom (2-2) gave up a run on three hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in six innings, but took the loss Wednesday versus the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was once again excellent, but the Mets couldn't muster any runs against Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta. Despite the loss, deGrom has a minuscule 0.51 ERA and 0.57 WHIP to go with a 59:4 K:BB across 35 innings this season. The Mets' ace will hope for better run support in his next start, currently scheduled for Monday in St. Louis.
Apr 24, 2021
Dominance continues Friday
DeGrom (2-1) went the distance in a 6-0 shutout of the Nationals on Friday, scattering two hits over nine scoreless innings while striking out a career-high 15 without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
He threw 84 of his 109 pitches for strikes, and somehow that understates just how locked in deGrom was. He's the first pitcher ever with 50 strikeouts through his first four starts, breaking the mark of 48 that Shane Bieber reached just a few days ago to tie Nolan Ryan's old record, and he's only the third pitcher in history with three straight starts of 14 K's or more, joining Pedro Martinez and Gerrit Cole in a very exclusive club. DeGrom has even emerged as a threat at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs to push his batting average to an astounding .545 (6-for-11). At some point the right-hander will look mortal again, but he'll take a ridiculous 0.31 ERA and 50:3 K:BB through 29 innings into his next outing Wednesday at home against the Red Sox.
Apr 20, 2021
Bumped back to Friday
DeGrom will start Friday against the Nationals rather than Thursday against the Cubs as previously expected, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom does not appear to be dealing with any injury. He threw 99 pitches in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Rockies, while Joey Lucchesi threw just 55 in the nightcap, so Lucchesi will move in front of deGrom in the rotation for now.
Apr 18, 2021
Dazzles in Coors
DeGrom (1-1) picked up the win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Rockies, giving up three unearned runs on three hits and a walk over six innings while striking out 14.
ANALYSIS
The multiple delays since his last start didn't phase the right-hander and neither did pitching at altitude, as deGrom set a single-game record for the most strikeouts by a visiting pitcher in Coors Field. A Jeff McNeil error in the fifth inning also kept deGrom from taking a hit to his ERA, which now sits at a stunning 0.45 through three starts and 20 innings, and his 35:3 K:BB seems like a typo. He'll look to deliver another gem in his next outing Thursday on the road against the Cubs.
Apr 16, 2021
Another postponement Friday
DeGrom and the Mets won't play Friday at Colorado since the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 32-year-old's start will be pushed back another day after Thursday's series finale at Philadelphia was also postponed due to poor conditions. DeGrom should finally take the mound during Saturday's doubleheader against the Rockies.
Apr 15, 2021
Thursday's game postponed
DeGrom and the Mets won't play against the Phillies on Thursday since the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Thursday's series finale against Philadelphia will be made up as a doubleheader in late June. The team hasn't yet announced when deGrom will start next, but he could line up to start Friday or Saturday in Colorado. The right-hander allowed just one run with 21 strikeouts in 14 innings during his first two outings of the season.
Apr 10, 2021
Ties career high with 14 Ks
DeGrom (0-1) took the loss Saturday as the Mets fell 3-0 to the Marlins, allowing one run on five hits and no walks over eight innings while striking out 14.
ANALYSIS
His only real mistake got deposited in the seats by Jazz Chisholm in the second inning, but otherwise deGrom was his usual dominant self and tied his career high with 14 punchouts. As has been the case throughout his career, however, he got no run support from the Mets -- in his four starts with 14 Ks, his record is a stunning 1-2. The right-hander with take a 0.64 ERA and 21:2 K:BB through 14 innings into his next outing, set for Thursday at home against the Phillies.
Apr 5, 2021
Deja vu in no decision
DeGrom didn't factor into the decision in Monday's 5-3 loss to the Phillies, allowing three hits and two walks over six scoreless innings while striking out seven.
ANALYSIS
Despite the Mets' efforts to improve the roster around deGrom in the offseason, his first start of 2021 was more of the same -- he was dominant while on the mound and left with a 2-0 lead, only to watch the bullpen and defense fall apart in a five-run eighth inning for the Phillies. The right-hander threw 50 of 77 pitches for strikes and perhaps wasn't allowed to pitch deeper into the game due to the long layoff after his last spring outing, but deGrom wasn't showing any real signs of fatigue when he exited. He'll look for a better result in his next outing, set for Saturday at home against the Marlins.
Apr 2, 2021
Series versus Nats postponed
DeGrom won't pitch against the Nationals this weekend since Saturday's and Sunday's games have been postponed for additional COVID-19 testing and contact tracing.
ANALYSIS
The Nationals continue to deal with the fallout from multiple positive tests of COVID-19, leading to the postponement of the season-opening series. The Mets are scheduled to face the Phillies on Monday, when deGrom figures to take the mound.
Apr 1, 2021
Mets-Nationals postponed
DeGrom and the Mets won't play Thursday against the Nationals after the game was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns, Buster Olney of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was slated to start Thursday's Opening Day matchup, but the Nationals are reportedly dealing with at least one positive test for COVID-19 along with several staff members who are unavailable due to contact tracing. It's not yet clear when the two teams will be able to play.
Mar 25, 2021
Set for sim game Friday
DeGrom will throw about 90 pitches in a simulated game Friday as his final appearance of the spring, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
This will allow the right-hander to get an extra day of rest prior to his Opening Day assignment, while also preventing his first regular-season opponent, the Nationals, from getting another look at him in exhibition play. DeGrom will finish Grapefruit League play with a dazzling 0.66 ERA and 21:3 K:BB over 13.2 innings as he prepares to take a run at another Cy Young Award.
Mar 16, 2021
Strikes out six in four innings
deGrom (2-0) went four innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League outing against Houston, striking out six while allowing one run on two hits.
ANALYSIS
It was yet another sharp outing for the Mets' ace, who surrendered his first run of the spring -- leaving him with a 1.00 ERA and 16 strikeouts through nine innings. The 32-year-old righty already looks to be in midseason form and has a strong argument to be the first pitcher selected in this year's fantasy drafts.
Mar 12, 2021
In midseason form
DeGrom struck out seven Astros over three perfect innings Thursday while topping out at 101 mph with his fastball, Anthony Rieber of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
Spring radar gun readings aren't exactly reliable, but deGrom may as well have been hitting 120 mph for all the success Houston hitters had at the plate. The right-hander is lined up to take the mound for the Mets on Opening Day as he looks to capture his third Cy Young Award in four years, and Thursday's performance won't do anything to discourage fantasy GMs from selecting him early in the first round.
Mar 6, 2021
Named Opening Day starter
DeGrom has been named the Opening Day starter for the Mets, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Luis Rojas' announcement Saturday came as little surprise, as deGrom is considered one of the top pitchers in the game heading into the 2021 season. The 32-year-old's Opening Day start in 2021 will mark the third consecutive year in which deGrom has started the first game of the season for the Mets. The right-hander posted a 2.38 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 104:18 K:BB over 68 innings across 12 starts in 2020.
Mar 3, 2021
Spring debut set for Saturday
DeGrom will make his spring debut Saturday against the Astros, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Mets' ace will begin building up for the regular season this weekend. He is widely considered the best pitcher in the game heading into his age-32/33 season.
Sep 27, 2020
Reaches century mark in Ks
DeGrom didn't factor into the decision in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out 10.
ANALYSIS
It's the fifth time in 12 starts deGrom has fanned 10 or more batters. The right-hander put together another Cy Young-worthy campaign in 2020, posting a 2.38 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 104:18 K:BB through 68 innings, but once again a lack of consistent run support from the Mets left him with only four wins.
Sep 21, 2020
Fans 14 in tough loss
DeGrom (4-2) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks over seven innings Monday, striking out 14 and taking the loss to the Rays.
ANALYSIS
As usual, deGrom was dominant Monday but the Mets didn't provide much help at the dish. The 32-year-old tied his season best with 14 strikeouts while allowing just a pair of runs, one on a sacrifice fly and another from a solo shot by Nate Lowe. He's making a strong push towards his third straight NL Cy Young, sporting a 2.14 ERA and 94:16 K:BB. DeGrom will look to squeeze in one more start before the season ends in Washington this weekend.
Sep 19, 2020
Expected to start Monday
DeGrom (hamstring) threw another side session Saturday and is expected to make his scheduled start Monday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom exited Wednesday's start with a right hamstring spasm, but he shouldn't have to miss any turns through the rotation as manager Luis Rojas said Saturday that he's in line to start Monday. Assuming he's indeed able to return, the right-hander lines up for one more start in the regular season after Monday's outing.
Sep 18, 2020
Throws side session Friday
DeGrom (hamstring) threw a side session prior to Friday's game, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The team received positive feedback about deGrom's latest throwing session. The right-hander left Wednesday's start with a right hamstring spasm, but it appears as though he's in line to be available for his next turn through the rotation Monday as long as he doesn't experience any setbacks.
Sep 17, 2020
Plays catch Thursday
DeGrom (hamstring) played catch and received treatment Thursday, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Luis Rojas called it a "positive day," which is a good sign after the veteran right-hander was removed from Wednesday's start after two innings due to a right-hamstring spasm. DeGrom's next turn through the rotation lines up for Monday, and he appears likely to make that start if he can avoid any setbacks over the weekend.
Sep 16, 2020
Hopes to make next starts
DeGrom (hamstring) believes he'll be fine to make his final two starts of the regular season, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 32-year-old was lifted after two innings Wednesday due to a hamstring spasm, an issue that apparently cropped up during his previous start, though he didn't inform the team at the time. DeGrom's next turn through the rotation lines up for Monday against Tampa Bay, and he appears likely to take the mound again barring a setback.
Sep 16, 2020
Out with hamstring spasm
DeGrom exited Wednesday's start against the Phillies with a right hamstring spasm, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
The 32-year-old was removed after giving up three runs over two innings due to the injury. The severity of the issue remains unclear, leaving deGrom's status for his next turn through the rotation up in the air.
Sep 16, 2020
Exits after two frames
DeGrom was removed from Wednesday's game against the Phillies after allowing three runs on four hits with one strikeout and one walk over two innings, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The team has yet to announce an injury, but the right-hander was seen talking to the athletic trainer in the dugout between innings. The three earned runs is the most deGrom has surrendered during a start this season.
Sep 12, 2020
Secures fourth win
DeGrom (4-1) allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out nine over six innings as he earned the win Friday against the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom has allowed no more than one earned run in each of his past five starts, but he's only been rewarded with two wins during that time. He had no trouble securing the victory Friday as the Mets scored 14 runs between the third and fourth innings. The right-hander now carries a career-best 1.67 ERA and 0.87 WHIP through 54 innings this season. His next start should come on the road Thursday against the Phillies.
Sep 6, 2020
Back in win column
DeGrom (3-1) allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out 12 over seven innings as he earned the win Sunday against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom allowed a season-high four runs during his last trip to the mound, but he was dominant against Philadelphia as his only blemish was a solo home run in the second inning. The Mets' offense also had a dominant performance by providing 14 runs, allowing deGrom to pick up a comfortable win. The righty now has a 1.69 ERA and 70:11 K:BB over 48 innings this year. His next start should come on the road Saturday against the Blue Jays.
Aug 31, 2020
Start spoiled by rough sixth inning
DeGrom (2-1) took the loss Monday against the Marlins, allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks across six innings pitched. He struck out nine.
ANALYSIS
It was looking like the defending National League Cy Young winner would cruise to 3-0 as he allowed just two hits in five scoreless innings to start the outing. However a solo homer by Garrett Cooper to start the sixth, followed by a fielding error and three more hits led to a four-run inning for the Marlins. All in all, the right-hander was charged with just one earned run, although he took his first loss of the campaign. DeGrom will look to get back in win column when he takes the hill Sunday against the Phillies.
Aug 26, 2020
Fans 14 in no-decision
DeGrom gave up one run on two hits and two walks while striking out 14 in seven innings in a no-decision versus the Marlins on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom put the Mets in a good position to win, but reliever Justin Wilson allowed three runs to tie the game. That forced deGrom to settle for his fourth no-decision in six starts. The right-hander has a stellar 1.80 ERA and 0.83 WHIP with a 49:7 K:BB across 35 innings this year. He currently lines up to face the Orioles on Tuesday, but it's possible deGrom works on short rest to start one of Sunday's games in a doubleheader versus the Yankees.
Aug 20, 2020
Stellar in no-decision
DeGrom allowed just four hits and struck out seven through six shutout innings Wednesday against the Marlins. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom put himself in good position to pick up his third consecutive win Wednesday after firing six dominant innings but his day was spoiled after the Mets' bullpen squandered another late lead. The reigning NL Cy Young winner owns an impressive 1.93 ERA and 7:1 K:BB through 28 innings pitched. He is scheduled to take the mound against Tuesday in what will be his third consecutive start against the Marlins.

Won't be limited Wednesday
DeGrom won't have any workload limitations for his start Wednesday in Miami, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom will be starting for the first time in 10 days after being scratched from his previous start with a stiff neck. He's been able to throw several times in the intervening days, however, so he should be able to pitch deep into the game against the Marlins.

Slated to pitch Wednesday
DeGrom (neck) will pitch Wednesday against the Marlins, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom threw a bullpen session Monday and felt good afterward, so he'll be able to return to the mound after missing just one start. The right-hander was scratched from his scheduled start Friday with neck stiffness, but he's thrown three times since then and hasn't faced any setbacks. It's unclear whether he'll have a workload restriction during his return.

Plays catch again
DeGrom (neck) played catch again Sunday and felt better, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was scratched from his scheduled start Friday against the Phillies due to neck stiffness. Whether or not he's able to make his next turn in the rotation Wednesday against the Marlins remains up in the air, but he's at least making progress in that direction.
Aug 15, 2020
Plays catch Saturday
DeGrom (neck) played catch from about 90 feet Saturday afternoon, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom is just going through the proper steps with the hopes that he'll be ready to go for his next turn through the rotation which is currently scheduled for Wednesday against the Marlins. The 2019 NL Cy Young recipient is expected to throw a bullpen session Sunday if his neck is loose enough and will continue to progress towards making his next start if no setbacks are had during the process.
Aug 14, 2020
Dealing with neck stiffness
DeGrom was scratched from Friday's start against the Phillies with neck tightness, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
The 32-year-old apparently experienced the tightness following Sunday's start versus the marlins, and the issue lingered throughout the week. DeGrom plans to throw a bullpen session Sunday or Monday since there's no structural issues, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, leaving his status for his next couple turns through the rotation up in the air.
Aug 14, 2020
Scratched from Friday's start
DeGrom was scratched from Friday's start at Philadelphia for unspecified reasons, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The team hasn't provided an official reason for deGrom being scratched, but he did have a finger issue crop up during his previous start Sunday. It's also unclear who will be taking the mound Friday for the Mets, but more information should be available later in the afternoon.
Aug 14, 2020
Cleared for Friday's start
DeGrom (finger) will start Friday's game against the Phillies in Philadelphia.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom indicated after his most recent start Sunday against the Marlins that he experienced a finger issue during the outing, but he was able to complete a between-starts bullpen session to stay on his normal rest schedule heading into Friday's turn. The right-hander, who has gone 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 28 strikeouts in 22 innings this season, isn't expected to face any limitations Friday.

Minor finger issue surfaces
DeGrom (2-0) allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six over five innings as he earned the win Sunday against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom was able to limit Miami's run production Sunday despite allowing nine baserunners over his five innings of work. As a result, he put himself in line for the win in the 4-2 contest. However, the right-hander revealed after the game that he felt a minor issue in his finger during the game, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports. He didn't sound too concerned about it, saying that it could be the start of a blister that shouldn't affect him. It's unlikely that he'll miss time due to his lack of concern about the severity, but deGrom's status could be worth monitoring ahead of his scheduled start in Philadelphia on Friday.

Fans 10 in win
DeGrom (1-0) picked up the win Monday in a 7-2 victory over Atlanta, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out 10.
ANALYSIS
For once, the Mets gave their ace plenty of run support, and deGrom didn't let it go to waste. He continues to flash career-best velocity, hitting triple digits on the radar gun five times Monday, in addition to his arsenal of nasty breaking and off-speed pitches. DeGrom will look to extend his quality start streak to three in his next outing, scheduled for Sunday at home against the Marlins.
Jul 30, 2020
Tosses quality start
DeGrom didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's loss to the Red Sox, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
New season, same old story for deGrom, who exited the game with a 3-2 lead but had to watch as the Mets bullpen squandered it. The right-hander threw 88 pitches (60 strikes) to pick up his first quality start of the year, and he'll try to find some way to get into the win column for a change in his next outing Monday in Atlanta.
Jul 29, 2020
Approaching full workload
DeGrom is expected to throw between 80 and 100 pitches Wednesday against the Red Sox, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom looked as good as ever Opening Day against Atlanta, striking out eight and allowing just one hit and one walk over five scoreless innings, though he only threw 72 pitches after back soreness derailed his preseason buildup. His pitch count will remain limited Wednesday, though not by very much, and he'll likely be able to handle a full workload by his third start of the year.
Jul 24, 2020
Dominant in Opening Day start
DeGrom fired five scoreless innings in Friday's win against the Braves but didn't factor into the decision. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out eight.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom's health was a question heading into Opening Day as he dealt with back tightness over the end of camp, but he was in full form Friday. The back-to-back NL Cy Young Award winner threw 72 pitches while only allowing two baserunners, but he was unable to get much run support from the Mets, a problem that's plagued him over the past few seasons. Despite the no-decision Friday, the 32-year-old's 2020 season got off to a good start against Atlanta's potent lineup. DeGrom's next start should come Wednesday against the Red Sox.
Jul 21, 2020
Good to go for Opening Day
DeGrom (back) felt good after a side session Tuesday and is considered fully ready to go for Friday's Opening Day start against Atlanta, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom has battled back soreness over the past week, causing him to cut an intrasquad appearance short last Tuesday after just one inning. An MRI revealed no significant issues, and he's continued to feel fine following multiple bullpen sessions as well as another simulated game, so there's little reason to doubt his health heading into Friday's contest. He's unlikely to reach the 100-pitch threshold in his season debut, however, as he threw just 60 pitches in his final simulated game Sunday.
Jul 19, 2020
Sim game goes well
DeGrom (back) performed well in his sim game Sunday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom has been steadily increasing his workload since leaving Tuesday's intrasquad game with back tightness, and the fact that his sim game went well Sunday signals that he should be on track to serve as the team's Opening Day starter on Friday. It wouldn't be surprising if Sunday served as a final tuneup for the right-hander ahead of the regular season. DeGrom may not be able to quite reach his usual pitch count in the season opener, but his progression signals that he should be able to take the mound Friday.
Jul 17, 2020
Set for sim game
DeGrom (back) felt loose following his bullpen session Friday and will throw a simulated game Sunday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Barring setbacks, it doesn't appear that the back soreness that deGrom has been dealing with in recent days will wind up costing him any starts. He'd been lined up to pitch in an exhibition game against the Yankees on Sunday, but the Mets adjusted their plans slightly. He'll still pitch that day, however, and is expected to throw 50-60 pitches, which lines him up to throw somewhere close to 80 pitches on Opening Day against the Braves.
Jul 17, 2020
Throws bullpen session
DeGrom (back) threw a bullpen session Friday, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom's preseason buildup was thrown off when he left Tuesday's intrasquad game with back tightness after throwing just one inning. An MRI didn't reveal any serious issues, however, and he's been considered day-to-day. He remains in contention for the Mets' Opening Day start against the Braves next Friday, provided his bullpen session goes smoothly, though there's a chance his disrupted summer camp prevents him from handling a full workload in his first outing or two of the year.
Jul 16, 2020
Plans to pitch Opening Day
DeGrom (back) said he feels good and plans to pitch against the Braves on Opening Day, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom exited Tuesday's intrasquad matchup after experiencing back tightness, but an MRI came back clean and he appears on track to start the regular-season opener as scheduled. According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, the righty is scheduled to throw a bullpen Friday before facing the Yankees in a scrimmage Sunday. If all goes well, deGrom is hoping to throw 60-65 pitches Sunday before ramping up to around 80-85 pitches in the July 24 season opener.
Jul 15, 2020
Undergoing MRI
DeGrom underwent an MRI on his back Wednesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom left his intrasquad appearance Tuesday after just a single inning due to a tight back. He's considered day-to-day for now, but a clearer picture of his return timeline should emerge once the results of the MRI are made public. Even a slight delay would likely render him unable to handle a full starter's workload in his first start or two of the year, given that Opening Day is just nine days away. Whether or not he's able to appear in any capacity in the first few weeks of the season will depend on his MRI results.
Jul 14, 2020
Exits with back tightness
DeGrom exited Tuesday's intrasquad game after one inning due to back tightness, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
The 32-year-old covered three innings during his previous outing and was expected pitch four-plus innings Tuesday, but he ended up making an abrupt exit after only one frame. The severity of the injury remains unclear, but at best this puts deGrom's availability for Opening Day next week in doubt. The team should provide another update within the next couple days as he's further evaluated.
Jul 14, 2020
Leaves after one inning
DeGrom left Tuesday's intrasquad scrimmage after just one inning, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
So far no reason has been given for deGrom's early departure. He was scheduled to pitch three-to-four innings after pitching three innings in his last outing.
Jul 6, 2020
Aiming for 100 pitches
DeGrom expects to be ready to throw 100 pitches on Opening Day, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
The Mets' ace intends to ramp up to 85 pitches in his final outing before the start of the regular season, putting him in striking distance of 100 pitches for his first start of the year. Pitchers will likely be entering this season in widely varying stages of readiness based on how well they were able to stay in shape while play was paused, with many starters unlikely to pitch long enough to earn a win in their first start or two of the year. That doesn't seem like it will apply to deGrom, however, which bodes well for his value heading into the campaign.
Jul 6, 2020
Works BP session
DeGrom threw the equivalent of two innings during a batting practice session Sunday morning, Deesha Thosar of The New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander "retired" seven of the nine batters he faced and seemed to get stronger as the outing went on. With Noah Syndergaard (elbow) already lost for the season, the Mets need deGrom to maintain his Cy Young form, but it doesn't look like they're going to push him too quickly in summer camp as he stretches back out.
Mar 12, 2020
Sharp against Cards
DeGrom allowed one run on one hit over four innings while striking out three in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
His 2-1 pitch to Matt Carpenter in the fourth inning caught too much of the plate and was blasted over the left-field wall, but otherwise deGrom was untouchable Wednesday. The perennial Cy Young candidate now has a 1.29 ERA, 0.29 WHIP and 5:0 K:BB through seven spring frames as he gears up for Opening Day.
Mar 7, 2020
Working on curve
DeGrom threw 51 pitches in a simulated game Friday and gave up a home run to J.D. Davis on a hanging curveball, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The two-time Cy Young Award winner threw the curve only 2.9 percent of the time last season, but he's hoping to make it a bigger part of his arsenal. "I've been trying to work on the curveball a little bit in between," deGrom said afterwards. "It's been good in the 'pen, but for some reason in the game it seems to pop up. I'm trying to have it come out of my hand like a fastball and try to throw one on the plate. That one I just hung." The last thing hitters want to hear is that the right-hander has another weapon at his disposal, but he's been getting by OK without a curveball, posting an ERA under 2.50, a WHIP under 1.00 and a K/9 above 11.0 in each of the last two seasons.

Tosses live BP session
DeGrom completed his first live batting practice session of the spring Thursday, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
DeGrom threw approximately 30 pitches to Michael Conforto and Yoenis Cespedes during the session, inducing several swinging strikes from both hitters, per Thosar. The 31-year-old looks to have picked up right where he left off following back-to-back Cy Young-winning seasons, and he'll have a valid case for being the first pitcher off the board during fantasy drafts this spring.
