Goes six scoreless in win
Taillon (8-10) earned the win Friday, allowing four hits and four walks over six scoreless innings against Colorado. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
Taillon didn't have his best command, but all four hits he allowed were singles as he kept the Rockies off the board in what wound up being a 6-0 shutout victory for the host Cubs. The 31-year-old right-hander lowered his ERA from 5.27 to 5.05 in the process and can look to push it below 5.00 in his final regular-season start next week at Milwaukee.
Sep 18, 2023
Next start pushed back
Taillon is not scheduled to start during the three-game series with the Pirates that begins Tuesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon would have taken the ball against the Pirates had he remained on regular rest, but the Cubs announced their starters for the three-game set Monday, and Taillon was not among them. It remains to be seen if he will be pushed back or skipped altogether, but don't expect to see him on the mound until Friday at the earliest.

Takes 10th loss Wednesday
Taillon (7-10) allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits across five innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Rockies. He walked one and struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Coors Field is a notoriously tough venue for pitchers, and Taillon was no exception, as he suffered a 10th loss in a season for the second time in his seven-year MLB career. The righty has disappointed in his first campaign with the Cubs, as he now has a 5.27 ERA after posting a 3.91 ERA for the Yankees in 2022. Taillon will look for better results in his next outing, which is tentatively set for Sept. 20 against the Pirates at home, which looks like an easier spot.

Allows two homers in loss
Taillon (7-10) took the loss Wednesday, allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk over five innings against Colorado. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Taillon looked sharp early, retiring 10 of the first 11 batters he faced on the afternoon. However, he began to struggle as the game went on, surrendering five runs between the fourth and fifth innings --- though two of those runs wouldn't be charged against him on account of a fielding error by Ian Happ. The right-hander has now lost his last four decisions and has given up multiple home runs in three of his last four outings. On a positive note, he does hold a 26:2 K:BB over that stretch.

Twirls six shutout innings
Taillon threw six scoreless innings with nine strikeouts but did not factor into the decision in Friday's loss to the Diamondbacks. He allowed one hit and one walk.
ANALYSIS
Taillon stymied the Diamondbacks all Friday afternoon, completing his six shutout innings in a tidy 77 pitches. He generated 12 swings-and-misses. Those whiffs led to a 38.9% CSW rate on the afternoon, well above his 25.8% CSW rate on the season prior to this start. This outing was a welcome turnaround for Taillon after he posted an ugly 7.86 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 26.1 innings over his five prior starts.
Sep 3, 2023
Gives up five in no-decision
Taillon did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing five runs on seven hits over 5.2 innings against the Reds. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
The Reds got to Taillon early, tallying four runs on three homers in the first two innings. The right-hander would ultimately settle down, however, holding Cincinnati off the board until the sixth inning. Following a four-start winning streak, Taillon's struggled of late, posting a 7.86 ERA over his last five starts. He's 7-9 on the season with a 5.73 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 113:33 K:BB across 25 starts (127.1 innings) this season. Taillon's currently in line for a home matchup with the Diamondbacks in his next outing.
Aug 29, 2023
Falters in ninth loss
Taillon (7-9) took the loss against Milwaukee on Monday, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits and no walks while striking out six batters over six innings.
ANALYSIS
Taillon got blitzed by the Brewers in the first frame, serving up a pair of homers -- including a leadoff shot by Christian Yelich on his third pitch of the game -- and four runs overall. He was better after that, giving up just an unearned run and five hits the rest of the way, but the initial inning was too much for the Cubs to overcome. Taillon has dropped three of his past four outings, posting a 7.84 ERA over 20.2 frames during that span. The poor stretch comes immediately after an impressive six-game run during which he went 5-0 with a 2.17 ERA across 37.1 innings.
Aug 23, 2023
Pitches decently in no-decision
Taillon allowed four runs on four hits across 5.2 innings and did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Tigers. He walked one and struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Taillon kept the Tigers off the board for five innings, but things came undone a bit in the sixth, as he allowed three singles followed by a grand slam from the red-hot Kerry Carpenter. That spoiled an otherwise good outing for the righty, who has been up and down this year with a 5.60 ERA. Taillon will look to avoid the big inning in his next start, which is tentatively set for Monday against the Brewers, which shapes up to be an important game as the teams fight for the NL Central title.
Aug 18, 2023
Saddled with tough-luck loss
Taillon (7-8) took the loss Friday, yielding four runs (two earned) on six hits against the Royals. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
It goes down as a quality start but is Taillon's second straight loss. This effort was indisputably better than the last one, though, with Taillon taking a lead into the sixth inning before serving up a two-run shot to Bobby Witt. The big right-hander has mostly been good since the start of July, although one really poor outing against the Blue Jays has skewed his numbers a bit.
Aug 13, 2023
Lit up for eight runs
Taillon (7-7) took the loss Sunday, allowing eight runs on eight hits and two walks over three innings against Toronto. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Taillon had performed very well over his previous six starts, allowing only nine earned runs over 37.1 innings. However, he nearly doubled that total on Sunday. Outside of a three-run home run by Dalton Varsho, the Blue Jays mainly nickel-and-dimed Taillon with seven singles and a couple of walks. He'll have a chance for redemption at some point next weekend in a home series against the Royals.
Aug 9, 2023
Dominant in win
Taillon (7-6) earned the win Tuesday, allowing two runs on three hits without walking a batter over seven innings against the Mets. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
After surrendering a base hit to Jeff McNeil followed by a two-run shot from Pete Alonso in the first inning, Taillon allowed just one more baserunner and proceeded to retire the final 16 Mets he faced. The 31-year-old righty has now earned a win in four consecutive outings, posting a 2.28 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 22:7 K:BB across 23.2 innings during that stretch. Taillon will look to keep the win streak alive in his next start, which is projected to be early next week against the scuffling White Sox.
Aug 3, 2023
Continues to roll Thursday
Taillon (6-6) earned the win over Cincinnati on Thursday, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five batters over five-plus innings.
ANALYSIS
It wasn't the breeziest outing for the right-hander, as he notched just one 1-2-3 inning and needed 92 pitches to get through five-plus frames. However, Taillon got the job done, collecting his fourth win in his past five starts to get his record to .500 for the first time this season. The veteran hurler has turned things around since a poor July 2 outing against Cleveland that pushed his season ERA to 6.93 -- over his subsequent five starts, he's posted a 2.08 ERA over 30.1 innings despite a mediocre 23:10 K:BB. Taillon will look to keep rolling in his next start, which currently lines up to be a road matchup against the Mets.
Jul 30, 2023
Nabs win Saturday
Taillon (5-6) earned the win over St. Louis on Saturday, pitching six innings and allowing one run on two hits and four walks while striking out four batters.
ANALYSIS
Taillon ran into trouble in the first inning, allowing the first two batters he faced to reach base, with one of them scoring. An inning-ending double play grounder off the bat of Nolan Arenado ended the threat, and after Taillon walked the bases full in the third, he retired the final 10 batters he faced en route to his third quality start of the campaign. The veteran right-hander held an ugly 6.93 ERA following a poor performance against Cleveland on July 2, but he's since lowered that mark to 5.46 on the back of a strong four-start stretch during which he's yielded just four runs over 25.1 frames.
Jul 23, 2023
Cruises to fourth win
Taillon (4-6) allowed just one run on seven hits across 5.2 innings to earn the win Sunday against the Cardinals. He walked one and struck out six.
ANALYSIS
It's mostly been a lost season for Taillon, though he's been better lately. Over his last three starts, he's allowed just four earned runs across 19.1 innings, picking up two wins in the process, including Sunday in the comfortable 7-2 Chicago victory. The righty's overall ERA is still an unsightly 5.75, but it looks like he's trending in the right direction. Taillon will aim to keep his momentum going in his next outing, which is projected to come Saturday against this same St. Louis squad.
Jul 19, 2023
Falls shy of quality start
Taillon did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk over 5.2 innings against the Nationals. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Taillon came up one out short of his second consecutive quality start, being pulled at 92 pitches after 5.2 innings. The 31-year-old got off to a sluggish start Tuesday, serving up a solo homer to Lane Thomas in the first and then giving up a pair of runs before recording an out in the second inning. After giving up four or more runs in three straight starts, Taillon has allowed three runs over his last two starts (13.2 innings) combined. He's tentatively lined up to take on the Cardinals for his next start, who rocked Taillon for four runs and two homers over 2.2 innings during their last meeting.
Jul 8, 2023
Blanks former club for win
Taillon (3-5) picked up the win Friday, allowing one hit and two walks over eight scoreless innings in a 3-0 victory over the Yankees. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Gleyber Torres rapped a single in the first inning, and that was all the Yankees could manager off the right-hander. Taillon fired 64 of 102 for strikes against the team he pitched for the prior two seasons, giving him just his second quality start of 2023. After a rough start to his Cubs tenure, all three of Taillon's wins have come since the beginning of June, and over his last seven outings he has a 4.69 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 31:11 K:BB through 40.1 innings.
Jul 2, 2023
Allows five earned runs Sunday
Taillon allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits across five innings and did not factor into the decision in Sunday's extra-inning loss to the Guardians. He had no walks and struck out six.
ANALYSIS
The struggles continued for Taillon, who saw his season ERA climb above 7.00. He was able to miss some bats Sunday but he allowed five earned runs for the second consecutive start. The righty has allowed at least four earned runs in four of his last five appearances. It's been a rough first season in Chicago for Taillon, who had a much stronger 3.91 ERA for the Yankees last year. He's penciled in to start again Friday against his old team in New York and should be avoided in that spot.
Jun 27, 2023
Struggles again in sixth loss
Taillon (2-6) allowed five runs on seven hits across five innings to take the loss Tuesday against the Phillies. He walked one and struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Taillon set a season high in strikeouts but otherwise was ineffective again. He's allowed four earned runs or more in three of his last four appearances and eight times overall this season. That's led to a 6.90 ERA, which is not what the Cubs were expecting when they inked the righty to a four-year, $68 million dollar deal in the offseason. Taillon should start again this weekend against the Guardians, though fantasy managers should look elsewhere for the time being.
Jun 22, 2023
Passed over for start this week
Taillon isn't expected to make another start until next week, as the Cubs have named Justin Steele and Marcus Stroman as their starters for their two-game weekend series in London versus the Cardinals, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon last pitched Sunday, so he wasn't an option to make a start during the Cubs' three-game series with the Pirates that ran Monday through Wednesday. Due to off days Thursday and Friday while they make the trip overseas, the Cubs will use the break in the schedule to reorder the rotation and have their top two starters take the hill in London. It's unclear if Taillon will be available out of the bullpen during the London series, as the Cubs may not want to overwork him ahead of his likely return to the rotation at some point during next week's three-game set with the Phillies.
Jun 18, 2023
Dealt fifth loss
Taillon (2-5) was charged with the loss Sunday against the Orioles after he allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks across 5.1 innings. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander kept Baltimore off the board through three innings, but he surrendered two runs in both of the fourth and sixth frames. Taillon has covered at least 5.1 frames in each of his past four starts, but he has a 4.84 ERA and has given up five homers during that stretch. He tentatively lines up to pitch against the Cardinals next weekend.
Jun 14, 2023
Notches second win
Taillon (2-4) earned the win Tuesday against the Pirates, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Taillon won his second consecutive start, going six innings while tossing 95 pitches in his longest outing of the season. After going 0-3 with an ugly 8.04 ERA in his first eight outings, the 31-year-old veteran has made modest improvements in the month of June, going 2-1 with a 4.24 ERA over three starts. The results are certainly not what the Cubs expected after signing Taillon to a four-year, $68 million dollar deal in the offseason.
Jun 8, 2023
Takes loss versus Angels
Taillon (1-4) allowed four runs on five hits and four walks while striking out five over 5.1 innings, taking the loss Wednesday versus the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Mike Trout and Luis Rengifo each hit solo home runs off Taillon, making this the third time in 10 starts he's allowed multiple homers. He stayed in to begin the sixth inning but faded as the Angels established a lead, and the Cubs couldn't bounce back. Taillon has allowed at least four runs in five of his last six outings, and he's still yet to complete six innings in any appearance. He's at a 7.02 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 40:15 K:BB through 42.1 innings. Taillon is projected for a home start versus the Pirates next week.
Jun 3, 2023
Earns first 2023 win
Taillon (1-3) allowed one run on three hits across 5.2 innings to earn the win Friday against the Padres. He had no walks and struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Taillon finally earned his first win with the Cubs after joining the team in the offseason on a four-year, $68 million deal. The righty did miss some time with a groin injury, so perhaps he could round into form now that he appears to be fully healthy. Taillon's 7.05 ERA still looks ugly overall, and he's yet to complete six innings in a game. He'll look to build on this positive outing and possibly go a bit deeper in his next start, which should come in the middle of next week against the Angels on the road.
May 27, 2023
Struggles in no-decision
Taillon allowed four runs on six hits across 4.2 innings and did not factor into the decision Saturday against the Reds. He walked one and struck out five.
ANALYSIS
For the fifth straight start, Taillon failed to complete five innings, and he's allowed four earned runs or more in four consecutive outings. That explains the righty's 8.04 ERA overall, as he's never really gotten going for his new team after posting a 3.91 ERA last season with the Yankees. Taillon will look to turn things around when he takes the mound again, which will likely be Friday against the Padres on the road.
May 21, 2023
Another poor outing
Taillon (0-3) took the loss Saturday, allowing eight runs (six earned) on six hits and three walks over 2.1 innings against the Phillies. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Taillon served up a season-high six earned runs and has given up multiple runs in four straight outings since returning from the injured list. During that stretch, he's surrendered more runs (19) than innings pitched (12.2) and has an ugly 11:6 K:BB. If he continues on this trend, another stint on the injured list may be in the cards, but for now, he's projected to pitch again during the finale of a three-game set versus the Mets.
May 15, 2023
Coughs up four runs
Taillon allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk over 4.2 innings in Monday's loss to Houston. He struck out one and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Taillon got off to a rocky start Monday, yielding all four runs in the first inning. He gave up five hits in the frame, including a two-run double by Jose Abreu. Taillon then settled in for 3.2 scoreless innings to limit the damage. His ERA jumped to 6.66 with a 26:7 K:BB through 24.1 frames. He's projected to take the mound in Philadelphia this weekend.
May 9, 2023
Doesn't last long Tuesday
Taillon allowed four runs on five hits across 2.2 innings and did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Cardinals. He walked two and struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The five strikeouts are the only positive here, as Taillon otherwise struggled mightily before getting pulled after tossing 69 pitches. The righty has gone a total of 5.2 innings in two starts since returning from the injured list May 4, and his ERA now sits at an ugly 6.41. This certainly isn't what the Cubs had in mind when they paid Taillon $68 million over four years in the offseason. He'll look to get on track in his next start, which should come early next week against Houston.
May 4, 2023
No-decision in return
Taillon didn't factor in the decision during Thursday's loss to the Nationals after he allowed three runs on three hits and no walks over three innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The 31-year-old was sidelined the past couple weeks by a groin strain, but he rejoined Chicago's rotation Thursday and threw just 42 pitches. The only damage against him came via a three-run shot from Lane Thomas during the second inning. Taillon returned from the injured list without a minor-league rehab assignment, so he should remain on a limited workload for his next couple starts as he builds back up.
May 4, 2023
Activated for Thursday's start
Taillon (groin) was activated from the 15-day injured list by the Cubs on Thursday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon will rejoin the Cubs' rotation Thursday versus the Nationals after missing the last two weeks with a strained left groin. The big right-hander will be skipping a rehab assignment, so it's possible he won't be ready for a full workload.
May 3, 2023
Starting Thursday
Taillon (groin) will be activated from the 15-day injured list and start Thursday against the Nationals, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Cubs manager David Ross dismissed the idea of a Thursday return for Taillon on Monday, but seems to have changed his mind. The 31-year-old righty will skip a rehab stint and make his first appearance since landing on the injured list with a left groin strain April 20. Taillon holds a 4.50 ERA and 1.36 WHIP through 14 innings this season.
May 3, 2023
Possible for Thursday return?
Cubs manager David Ross was noncommittal Wednesday when asked whether Taillon (groin) might be activated to start Thursday versus the Nationals, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ross ruled out the idea Monday, but that was before Taillon threw a successful 45-pitch simulated game Tuesday in Washington. "Oh, I don't know," the skipper said Wednesday at Nationals Park. "We'll see." Taillon, 31, has been on the injured list since April 20 because of a left groin strain.
May 2, 2023
Throws simulated game
Taillon (groin) threw a 45-pitch simulated game Tuesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
It might have been the final step of side work for Taillon before he is cleared to embark on a minor-league rehab assignment. The 31-year-old right-hander landed on the injured list April 20 because of a left groin strain. Caleb Kilian filled his rotation spot last week before getting optioned back to Triple-A Iowa.
May 1, 2023
Throwing again Tuesday
Taillon (groin) is scheduled to throw another bullpen session Tuesday, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The upcoming side session marks Taillon's second since he was placed on the 15-day injured list April 20 with a left groin strain. Though the Cubs were initially optimistic that Taillon would be ready to come off the IL when first eligible -- which would have been Tuesday -- the right-hander instead looks like he'll remain on the shelf for another week. The Cubs turned to Caleb Kilian over the weekend to replace Taillon in the rotation, but because Kilian has since been optioned to Triple-A Iowa, the team will likely call up another pitcher to fill Taillon's next turn through the rotation, which comes up Thursday in Washington.
Apr 29, 2023
Throwing off mound Saturday
Taillon (groin) is throwing a bullpen session Saturday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It's looking like the Cubs might allow Taillon to skip a minor-league rehab assignment and jump back into the starting rotation in the early part of May, assuming all continues to go well with his side work. He's been sidelined for a little under two weeks with a mild-to-moderate left groin strain.
Apr 27, 2023
Advances to long-toss
Taillon (groin) will advance to long-toss throwing Thursday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon is making steady progress in his recovery from a mild-to-moderate left groin strain and could return to the Cubs' starting rotation in early May if all continues to go well. The 31-year-old had a 4.50 ERA and 16:4 K:BB through 14 innings (three starts) with Chicago when he landed on the injured list April 20.
Apr 26, 2023
Plays catch again Wednesday
Taillon (groin) played catch again Wednesday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon already has multiple flat-ground throwing sessions under his belt and could perhaps soon advance to mound work. He landed on the 15-day injured list April 20 due to what's being called a mild-to-moderate left groin strain. If all continues to go well, the 31-year-old right-hander should be ready to rejoin the Cubs' rotation in the early part of May.
Apr 21, 2023
Plays catch
Taillon (groin) played a light game of catch Thursday and will do so again Friday, Ryan Herrera of AllCHGO.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon landed on the injured list Thursday with a mild-to-moderate left groin strain. That he's already playing catch is a good sign and would seem to indicate he could return around the time he's first eligible.
Apr 20, 2023
Lands on IL with groin strain
Taillon was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a left groin strain, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon had been the scheduled start for the Cubs in Thursday night's series opener against the Dodgers, but he'll now miss at least two turns in the rotation. It's being called a "mild to moderate" groin strain, which indicates that he might be back in early May. Javier Assad has been called up from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move and will serve as the fill-in starter Thursday versus Los Angeles.
Apr 16, 2023
Limited support in strong outing
Taillon pitched five scoreless innings against the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out seven batters. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Taillon recorded easily his best start of the campaign, as he allowed a combined seven earned runs over nine innings across his previous two outings. The right-hander held the Dodgers to just four baserunners on two singles and two walks, and he exited after five frames with a 1-0 lead. However, the Cubs offense couldn't produce any more runs, and Taillon had to settle for a no-decision when Los Angeles notched a walkoff win in the ninth. Nonetheless, this was a promising start for the veteran hurler, who now holds a 4.50 ERA across 14 innings on the campaign.
Apr 9, 2023
Fans seven in loss
Taillon (0-2) allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk over five innings Sunday, striking out seven and taking a loss against the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Most of the damage against Taillon came during Texas' four-run second inning, though two were counted as unearned runs. He then gave up one more run in the fourth. Taillon forced just five whiffs but improved his season K:BB to 9:2 through nine frames. He's lined up for a road matchup with the Dodgers next weekend.
Apr 2, 2023
Takes loss in team debut
Taillon (0-1) allowed three runs on seven hits across four innings to take the loss Sunday against the Brewers. He walked one and struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Taillon wasn't particularly sharp in his Chicago debut, and the righty was lifted after just 63 pitches and four innings of work. He didn't allow any home runs but also didn't miss many bats and was just generally too hittable. Taillon should be better than this moving forward, though, after posting a 3.91 ERA and 1.13 whip last season with the Yankees. He'll get a chance to rebound in his next scheduled outing Saturday against the Rangers.
Apr 1, 2023
Set to debut Sunday
Taillon is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
It seemed like Taillon would be the team's No. 2 starter behind Marcus Stroman to begin the year, but it will be Justin Steele starting Saturday, followed by Taillon on Sunday. Taillon should still be a rotation mainstay all season after agreeing to a four-year, $68 million contract with the Cubs back in December. The righty posted a 3.91 ERA across 177.1 innings with the Yankees last season.
Mar 22, 2023
Should be No. 2 starter
With Marcus Stroman set to start Opening Day, Taillon figures to slot in as the Cubs' No. 2 starter to begin the regular season.
ANALYSIS
Stroman getting the ball on Opening Day isn't a surprise, and it should set up Taillon as the team's second starter, with Justin Steele to follow. Taillon signed a four-year, $68 million contract with the Cubs back in December after posting a 3.91 ERA across 177.1 innings with the Yankees last season.
Mar 5, 2023
Looks good Saturday
Taillon tossed three scoreless innings in Saturday's Cactus League game against the Angels. He allowed one hit and struck out four.
ANALYSIS
This was an improvement from Taillon's spring debut, when he allowed two runs on three hits across 1.2 innings of work. The Cactus League stats aren't particularly important for the righty, as he should be locked in as the Cubs' No. 2 starter after signing a four-year, $68 million contract in the offseason. Taillon will just want to get himself ready for the regular season, where he'll look to follow up the strong 3.91 ERA and 1.13 WHIP he posted across 177.1 innings with the Yankees in 2022.
Feb 25, 2023
Tweaks slider in offseason
Taillon changed the grip on his slider over the offseason, making the pitch more of a "sweeper," Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Last season, Taillon used his slider just under 19 percent of the time, making it his second most popular pitch behind the fastball. The righty also mixed in a curve, a cutter, a sinker and a changeup, giving him a fairly deep arsenal. The Cubs liked what they saw, inking Taillon to a four-year, $68 million contract back in December. He figures to slot in as the No. 2 pitcher behind Marcus Stroman once the regular season gets underway.
Dec 7, 2022
Inks $68 million deal with Cubs
Taillon agreed to a four-year, $68 million contract with the Cubs on Tuesday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon tied a career-high with 32 starts and covered 177.1 innings for the Yankees in 2022, and he'll now return to the NL Central and continue his career in Chicago. The 31-year-old had a 3.91 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 151:32 K:BB last season and should slot in behind Marcus Stroman in the Cubs' rotation.
Oct 20, 2022
Doesn't factor in Game 1 decision
Taillon did not factor in the decision during Game 1 of the ALCS after 4.1 innings of work, allowing one run on four hits and three walks in the 4-2 loss to the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Taillon delivered a solid performance against the tough Astros lineup, but he was tagged for a two-out RBI double by Martin Maldonado in the bottom of the second to tie the game 1-1. The 30-year-old righty fared much better than his relief performance in Game 2 of the ALDS when he allowed two runs on three hits against the Guardians without recording an out; however, the lack of strikeouts is alarming for Taillon. He tallied 151 K's over 177.1 innings in the regular season but has yet to record a strikeout spanning 23 batters in the postseason.
Oct 18, 2022
Starting Game 1 of ALCS
Taillon will start Game 1 of the ALCS against the Astros on Wednesday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon was originally scheduled to start Game 5 of the ALDS, though after it was postponed by one day due to rain the Yankees instead opted to start Nestor Cortes. Taillon appeared out of the bullpen in Game 2 against the Guardians on Oct. 14, so he'll be on regular rest despite throwing only 18 pitches in his lone postseason appearance.
Oct 18, 2022
Not starting rescheduled game
Taillon is no longer scheduled to start Game 5 of the NLDS against the Guardians after it was moved to Tuesday due to rain, but he'll start Game 1 of the NLCS should the Yankees advance, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon had been expected to start Game 5 on Monday, but the delay allows the Yankees to turn to Nestor Cortes instead. Taillon will face a much tougher test in the loaded Astros lineup should the Yankees manage to beat the Guardians on Tuesday.
Oct 17, 2022
ALDS start postponed
Taillon won't start Monday's Game 5 against Cleveland, as the game has been postponed due to rain.
ANALYSIS
Taillon was slated to make his first start of the 2022 postseason, but with Game 5 now pushed to Tuesday, the Yankees may elect to roll with Nestor Cortes on three days of rest. Taillon would still be available to pitch out of the bullpen if called upon.
Oct 10, 2022
Moves to bullpen for ALDS
Manager Aaron Boone said Taillon will be a relief option in the ALDS against Cleveland, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Scheduled off-days will allow the Yankees to use a three-man rotation on normal rest through Game 4 of the divisional series. Given the team's lack of bullpen depth, Taillon could be a prime candidate for middle-innings work, especially if any of the three starters fails to pitch deep into his game. The righty, who posted a 3.91 ERA and 151:32 K:BB in 177.1 innings this season, has never appeared out of the bullpen in six years of MLB action.
Oct 5, 2022
No-decision in final start
Taillon didn't factor into the decision in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Rangers, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The 30-year-old exited the game after 97 pitches (62 strikes) and in line for his sixth loss, but the Yankees rallied to get him off the hook. Taillon posted a 3.68 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 34:8 K:BB through 36.2 innings in September, giving him plenty of momentum headed into the playoffs.
Sep 28, 2022
Sharp in 14th win
Taillon (14-5) picked up the win in Tuesday's 5-2 victory over the Blue Jays, giving up two runs on seven hits over 7.1 innings. He struck out six without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
George Springer led off the game for the Jays with a solo shot, but Taillon buckled down after that and didn't even allow a runner to get into scoring position until the sixth inning. He fired 62 of 94 pitches for strikes en route to his second straight quality start and his seventh in 12 outings since the All-Star break, a stretch during which he sports a 3.69 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 62:15 K:BB through 68.1 innings.
Sep 23, 2022
Eight strikeouts against rival
Taillon did not factor into the decision Thursday, not allowing a run on four hits and a walk over six innings in a 5-4 victory over Boston. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Taillon allowed two doubles, one from Tommy Pham and the other off the bat of Yu Chang. The righty has allowed one homer or more in eight of his last 10 starts with a 4.25 ERA during that span. Despite Yankee Stadium's short porch, the 30-year-old has had more success at home recording a 3.47 ERA over 90.2 innings as opposed to a 4.42 ERA over 73.1 innings on the road.
Sep 18, 2022
Gives up four in loss
Taillon (13-5) gave up four earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings to take the loss in a 4-1 defeat against the Brewers on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Taillon gave up a three home run to Willy Adames en route to his fifth loss of the campaign. He threw 61 of his 94 pitches for strikes in the contest and otherwise did a decent job limiting the Brewers lineup. Taillon has an ERA of 4.67 in three September starts. He is tentatively expected to take the bump next against the Red Sox.
Sep 10, 2022
Strikes out eight in win
Taillon (13-4) earned the win Saturday, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk over 7.1 innings in a 10-3 victory over the Rays. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
The Yankees scored six runs in the first inning, affording Taillon a fair amount of wiggle room. He didn't need much, however, as Taillon was mostly excellent until he started running out of steam in the seventh inning (hit-by-pitch, wild pitch, two singles). Taillon does not typically pack the swing-and-miss punch of a frontline fantasy starter, but he leads the Yankees in wins and his 1.13 WHIP ranks 10th in the American League among qualified starters.
Sep 6, 2022
Takes no-decision Monday
Taillon did not factor in the decision against Minnesota on Monday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three batters.
ANALYSIS
Taillon departed his previous start early as a result of taking a line drive to his right forearm, but he didn't need to miss a turn in the rotation. The right-hander threw 83 strikes Monday and allowed just one extra-base hit, but that was a two-run homer by Gary Sanchez in the fifth inning that tied the score. Taillon has given up at least one homer in each of his six starts since Aug. 8, but he hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of those outings. He's posted a 3.94 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 22:5 K:BB over 32 innings during that stretch.
Sep 4, 2022
In clear to start Monday
Taillon (forearm) is scheduled to start Monday's game against the Twins at Yankee Stadium, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Taillon came out of his bullpen session over the weekend without issue and will make his 27th start of the season after exiting his previous outing against the Angels on Aug. 30, when he was struck in the forearm by a line drive. Through his eight starts since the All-Star break, Taillon has submitted a 4.24 ERA and 1.12 WHIP while striking out 35 over 40.1 innings.
Sep 2, 2022
Bullpen session Saturday
Taillon (forearm) will throw a bullpen session Saturday and is still expected to play in his next scheduled start, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon was diagnosed with a right forearm contusion after being hit by a line drive during Tuesday's win over the Angels. The injury never seemed to be considered serious, and the fact that he could avoid missing a start is a good sign for a Yankees pitching staff that has been plagued with injuries all year.
Aug 30, 2022
Exits early Tuesday
Taillon was removed from Tuesday's game against the Angels after being struck by a comebacker on the right wrist, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon was struck by a line drive and was lifted after giving up two runs over two innings to the Halos. The 30-year-old should be considered day-to-day, and it's unclear if the injury will affect his availability for the next turn through the rotation.
Aug 26, 2022
Records quality start Thursday
Taillon (12-4) earned the win over Oakland on Thursday, pitching six innings and allowing one run on six hits and no walks while striking out two batters.
ANALYSIS
Taillon induced a modest seven swinging strikes and registered only two punchouts, but he didn't need his swing-and-miss stuff to tame the Athletics' offense. The veteran right-hander was staked to a 10-run lead through four frames and cruised to an easy win, allowing just one run on a Shea Langeliers solo homer in the sixth. Taillon is tied for eighth in the majors with 12 victories on the season despite a middle-of-the-road 3.89 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 7.5 K/9.
Aug 20, 2022
Gets no help against Jays
Taillon (11-4) took the loss Friday as the Yankees were downed 4-0 by the Blue Jays, giving up three runs on six hits over five innings. He struck out five without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander didn't pitch too badly aside from grooving a first-pitch fastball to Teoscar Hernandez in the fourth inning that wound up traveling 421 feet to nearly straightaway center field, but the New York offense managed only four singles all night and never got a runner past second base, so Taillon had no margin for error. In six starts since the All-Star break, he's posted a 4.45 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 31:12 K:BB through 32.1 innings, with the ERA being fueled by a 1.7 HR/9.
Aug 14, 2022
Suffers loss in quality start
Taillon (11-3) took the loss Sunday, allowing three runs on six hits and zero walks over seven innings against the Red Sox. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Taillon got off to a rocky start as Tommy Pham led off the game with a double to deep center and later came around to score. The only other damage came from a two-run home run off the bat of Rafael Devers in the sixth. The Yankees' starter was out-dueled by Michael Wacha on the night, but it was promising that Taillon did not walk a batter for the first time since July 16. He will look to get back in the win column in his next start, which is slated to be against the Blue Jays this week.
Aug 9, 2022
Yields three in win
Taillon (11-2) allowed three runs on three hits and three walks over seven innings Monday, striking out six and earning a win over the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Taillon served up a pair of solo home runs in Monday's victory, including a first-inning shot by Mitch Haniger. The 30-year-old righty also loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth but wiggled out of the jam after giving up just one run. Taillon earned his first win since July 16 and turned in his longest outing since June 2. He'll carry a 3.95 ERA into his projected start in Boston this weekend.
Aug 3, 2022
Allows five runs
Taillon did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Mariners, allowing six runs (five earned) on two hits while striking out six and walking four over 4.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Taillon was not efficient Tuesday, throwing 98 pitches (56 for strikes) across 4.2 innings. Despite allowing just two hits, Taillon was tagged for five earned runs thanks in large part to two early home runs. The righty had not allowed more than three runs in a game until a four-run outing on June 7, but has four such games since then, including two games with six earned runs and two with five earned runs. Taillon also has just four quality starts in his last 12 appearances. He will take a 3.96 ERA into his next outing.
Jul 29, 2022
Bounces back against Royals
Taillon allowed four hits and two walks while striking out eight across six scoreless innings Thursday against the Royals. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Taillon entered the game having allowed 23 earned runs across his last 29.2 frames -- spanning six starts. However, he got back on track with a strong effort against the Royals, highlighted by seven groundball outs. Taillon now owns a 3.72 ERA and 92:17 K:BB across 109 innings for the season.
Jul 22, 2022
Struggles through short outing
Taillon allowed two earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out two across 2.2 innings Friday against Baltimore. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Taillon walked more than two batters for the first time in any start this season. It was also his shortest outing of the campaign, and he's now failed to complete at least six innings in eight of his last nine starts. In that same span, he has a 6.09 ERA with a 40:10 K:BB across 41.2 frames.
Jul 17, 2022
Gets ample run support in win
Taillon (10-2) earned the win over Boston on Saturday, allowing one run on two hits and no walks while striking out five over six innings.
ANALYSIS
Taillon came into the contest having allowed 20 runs over his previous 21 frames, and things looked ominous when he served up a solo homer to Rafael Devers in the first inning Saturday. New York responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame, however, and Taillon cruised from there, giving up only one more hit and no runs the rest of the way. The right-hander finished the first half with a team-high 10 victories along with a 3.86 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 82:12 K:BB over 100.1 innings.
Jul 11, 2022
Rough patch continues
Taillon registered a no-decision during Sunday's 11-6 loss to Boston, allowing six runs on seven hits and one walk with three strikeouts in five innings.
ANALYSIS
Taillon was staked to an early 6-2 lead but couldn't hang on, culminating with three two-out runs scoring in the fifth inning. The 30-year-old has now surrendered 20 runs in 21 innings across his last four starts, causing his ERA to spike more than a full run from 2.70 to 4.01. Taillon is projected for a rematch with Boston next weekend.
Jul 6, 2022
Struggles in loss
Taillon (9-2) gave up five earned runs on six hits and no walks while striking out five over 5.1 innings to take the loss in a 5-2 defeat against the Pirates on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Taillon was done in by a pair of home runs off the bats of Daniel Vogelbach and Jack Suwinski to be handed his second loss of the season. Taillon's 9-2 record conceals his struggles as of late. The 30-year-old right-hander has now given up 14 earned runs over his past three starts. His last quality start came over a month ago on June 3, and yet he has tallied three wins during that time thanks to the Yankees high-powered offense. Look for Taillon to take the mound Sunday at Boston when he will go for his tenth win of the season.
Jun 29, 2022
Picks up ninth win
Taillon (9-1) earned the win Wednesday against the A's after giving up three runs on seven hits across five innings. He had six strikeouts and two walks.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander surrendered three runs on four hits during the opening frame, but he settled down from there and blanked Oakland the rest of the way. Taillon has won his past nine decisions since taking a loss Opening Day, and he lines up for a favorable matchup against his former team in Pittsburgh next week.
Jun 23, 2022
Escapes with no-decision
Taillon allowed six runs on 10 hits and a hit batter while striking out three in 5.2 innings versus the Astros on Thursday. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Taillon gave up three-run home runs to Alex Bregman in the first inning and Yordan Alvarez in the third. It took a Yankees rally in the ninth to get Taillon off the hook after a lackluster start -- the six runs and 10 hits were both season highs. He still hasn't lost since his first game of the season, and he owns a solid 3.19 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 63:9 K:BB in 79 innings overall even after this poor outing. He's projected for a more favorable home start versus the Athletics next week.
Jun 18, 2022
Nabs eighth win
Taillon (8-1) gave up four hits, two walks and no runs over 5.2 innings to earn the win in a 4-0 shutout victory over the Blue Jays on Saturday. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Taillon bounced back from two sub-par starts in a row against the Cubs and the Twins to blank the Blue Jays over 5.2 innings. The eight strikeouts were a season high, and Taillon now holds an impeccable 6.7 K/BB ratio on the year, thanks especially to limiting the base on balls. His win against the Blue Jays marks a continuation of what has been an impressive 2022 campaign thus far. Taillon's eight wins tie him for seventh in MLB. With the Yankees averaging a league-best 5.11 runs per game, Taillon should be in line for plenty more wins, especially if he can maintain an ERA under 3.00. Look for Taillon to start next week against the Astros when he will go for win number nine.
Jun 12, 2022
Earns seventh win
Taillon (7-1) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out five in five innings to earn the win over the Cubs on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Taillon failed to record a quality start for a second consecutive outing, but he got plenty of run support from the Yankees' offense in the 18-4 victory, and he picked up his third win in his last four starts. The right-hander has posted a 2.53 ERA in 32 innings over his last five outings but has given up seven runs in 12 innings over his last two starts. He projects to make his next start on the road against Toronto on Saturday.
Jun 8, 2022
Short Outing
Taillon did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing four runs on nine hits and one walk over four innings against the Twins. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Taillon was not very efficient on Tuesday, allowing nine hits in four innings, throwing 63 of 87 pitches for strikes. Although he allowed four earned runs, only one was a home run which he allowed to Jorge Polanco in the fourth inning before being pulled. Tuesday's outing was the righty's shortest of the season and follows three quality starts in a row. He will carry a 2.73 ERA into his next start.
Jun 3, 2022
Earns sixth win with stellar outing
Taillon (6-1) earned the win Thursday, allowing one run on two hits and zero walks over eight innings against the Angels. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Taillon was perfect through seven innings, but he allowed a leadoff double to Jared Walsh in the top of the eighth inning and eventually gave up his only run of the night on a Kurt Suzuki single. However, the Yankees were able to respond in the bottom half of the inning and took the lead, setting Taillon up for his sixth win. The right-hander has been stellar this year, posting a 2.30 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP with a 44:5 K:BB across 58.2 innings.
May 28, 2022
Dazzles in fifth win
Taillon (5-1) picked up the win Friday, scattering two hits over eight scoreless innings in a 2-0 win over the Rays. He struck out five without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
He retired the first 12 batters he faced, and a sixth-inning double by Manuel Margot -- who got stranded at second base -- was as close as Tampa Bay got to plating a run. It was the second straight quality start and third of the season for Taillon, who will take a 2.49 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 39:5 K:BB through 50.2 innings into his next outing.
May 22, 2022
Whiffs seven in no-decision
Taillon didn't factor into the decision in a 3-1 loss to the White Sox in Game 1 of a doubleheader Sunday, allowing one run on five hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in seven innings.
ANALYSIS
Taillon had his best stuff working Sunday, limiting the damage to one run on three hits in the fourth inning, and responded by retiring the next 10 White Sox. The 94 pitches and seven strikeouts both represent season highs, while more strikeouts should be in store as the 30-year-old is at 7.2 K/9 this season compared to an 8.2 mark in his career. Taillon is scheduled to take the mound again next weekend against the Rays.
May 17, 2022
Earns fourth win
Taillon (4-1) grabbed the win Tuesday after he tossed five innings, surrendering three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out two versus the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Taillon was able to snag a win in what was his third shot versus the Orioles this season, failing to reach five innings in his prior two starts against them. He gave up a solo homer to Ramon Urias in the second frame before giving up two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. The 30-year-old has now allowed three or less runs in each of his first seven starts to open the season, though he has only produced one quality start in 2022. Now in his second season with the Yankees, Taillon owns a 3.28 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 27 strikeouts over 35.2 innings.
May 12, 2022
Notches third victory
Taillon (3-1) earned the win Wednesday against the Blue Jays after allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk across 5.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander allowed a run on a single, a walk and a hit by pitch during the first inning, but he then settled down before Toronto scratched across another run in the fifth. Taillon has won three of his past four starts and has a 2.57 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 17:2 K:BB over 21 frames during that span. He lines up to pitch in Baltimore early next week.
May 4, 2022
Sharp in second win
Taillon (2-1) picked up the win in Tuesday's 9-1 victory over the Blue Jays, allowing one run on five hits over six innings. He struck out four without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander was locked in a pitchers' duel with Alek Manoah through six frames, but Taillon got rewarded for his efforts when the Yankees broke through against the Toronto bullpen in the top of the seventh. The quality start was his first of the season, and he'll take a 2.84 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 21:2 K:BB through 25.1 innings into his next outing.
Apr 28, 2022
Can't go five innings
Taillon allowed two earned runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out four across 4.2 innings Thursday against Baltimore. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Taillon surrendered a run in both the second and third innings, but his primary problem was his inefficiency. He needed 83 pitches to record 14 outs while scattering seven hits -- including two doubles. On the positive side, Taillon continued to show strong control, as he's walked only two batters across 17.1 innings to begin the campaign. He's also maintained a solid 3.26 ERA across 19.1 innings, but he has now worked either 4.2 or five innings in all four of his starts.
Apr 22, 2022
Notches first victory
Taillon (1-1) allowed one run on seven hits across five innings Friday, striking out five and earning a win over the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Taillon spread seven hits over five innings but the only real damage against him was Franmil Reyes' solo shot in the fourth. The 6-foot-5 righty has given up a homer in each of his first three starts this season but he lowered his ERA to 3.07 through 14.2 frames. He'll carry a 13:1 K:BB into next week's projected home outing against the Orioles.
Apr 17, 2022
Just misses qualifying for win
Taillon pitched 4.2 innings against Baltimore on Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out two. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
The Yankees jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning, giving Taillon a chance to qualify for the win by completing the bottom of the frame. There had already been a rain delay that interrupted the contest, however, and manager Aaron Boone chose to pull the right-hander with two outs in the fifth after he allowed a single and a walk in the inning. Taillon has allowed exactly two runs in each of his first two starts, though he has yet to notch a victory. He'll try to change that in his next outing, which lines up to come at home against Cleveland late next week.
Apr 12, 2022
Out-dueled in Monday's loss
Taillon (0-1) took the loss Monday as the Yankees were blanked 3-0 by the Blue Jays, allowing two runs on five hits over five innings. He struck out six without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
It was a strong first outing of the season for Taillon, who tossed 53 of 72 pitches for strikes, but New York's bats couldn't get anything going against Alek Manoah and the Toronto bullpen. Taillon will look for a better result in his next start, scheduled for Saturday in Baltimore.
Mar 22, 2022
Avoids arbitration with Yankees
Taillon signed a one-year, $5.8 million contract with the Yankees on Tuesday to avoid arbitration, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon returned to the mound in 2021 after missing a year for his second Tommy John surgery, and he had a solid campaign with a 4.30 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 140:44 K:BB across 144 innings (29 starts). He's in his final year of arbitration eligibility and is set to be a free agent at the end of the season.
Mar 20, 2022
Starting Monday's exhibition
Taillon (ankle) will start Monday's spring training game against the Phillies, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Aaron Boone said last week Taillon was on track to be ready by Opening Day, and the right-hander will make his first start of spring training Monday. The 30-year-old underwent ankle surgery in October and had no apparent issues with his rehab and recovery, which should allow him to take a spot in the Yankees' starting rotation to open 2022.
Mar 14, 2022
On track to be ready by Opening Day
Manager Aaron Boone said Monday that Taillon (ankle) is on target to start the season on time, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon underwent ankle surgery in late October, but he's made good progress during the offseason and resumed throwing in recent weeks. The right-hander will presumably work on building up his workload during spring training, and he'll benefit from having an extra week ahead of the regular season after Opening Day was pushed back by a week. Boone revealed that Domingo German has been dealing with some shoulder injuries since January, so Taillon should compete for a spot in the rotation to begin the regular season.
Mar 1, 2022
Throwing again
Taillon's (ankle) teammate, Luke Voit, said Monday that the right-handed pitcher has looked good during his recent throwing sessions, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
The Yankees aren't holding formal training sessions while the MLB lockout remains ongoing, but Voit, Taillon and several other members of the 40-man roster are seemingly working out together in preparation for the start of the season. Taillon, who underwent right ankle surgery Oct. 28, previously noted earlier in the offseason that he hadn't experienced any setbacks during his winter throwing program, so he should have a good chance at gaining full clearance by the time the 2022 campaign gets underway. The 30-year-old would be one of several rehabbing players who would benefit from the start of the season being pushed back due to the lockout, even if only for a week or two.
Nov 16, 2021
Making good progress
Taillon is making good progress in his recovery from ankle surgery and could be part of the Yankees' rotation in April, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon underwent the procedure in late October and was thought to have a chance to be ready for Opening Day. It looks as though he's still roughly on track, though it may be more likely that he returns sometime later in April.
Oct 28, 2021
Undergoes ankle surgery
Taillon underwent ankle surgery Thursday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon sustained a right ankle tendon injury in early September and now faces a recovery timetable of approximately five months. If his rehab goes smoothly, the right-hander has a chance to be ready for Opening Day in 2022.
Oct 19, 2021
Scheduled for ankle surgery
Taillon will undergo ankle surgery in late October, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon hit the injured list in early September with a right ankle tendon injury. He returned for a pair of brief starts at the end of the season but wasn't fully healthy. The procedure is expected to take five months to recover from, giving him an expected return date in late March. If everything goes smoothly, he could be ready for game action by Opening Day, but even a slight delay will likely send him to the injured list to open the season.
Oct 4, 2021
Solid in short start
Taillon (ankle) allowed two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings in a no-decision versus Tampa Bay on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Taillon has been bothered by this ankle injury for much of the last month, but he was able to deliver solid work across 45 pitches (27 strikes) Sunday. He ends the regular season with an 8-6 record, a 4.30 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 140:44 K:BB in 144.1 innings in his first season with the Yankees. It's unclear if the 29-year-old would be a candidate for a rotation spot in the postseason should the Yankees defeat Boston in Tuesday's AL Wild Card Game.
Oct 2, 2021
Gets nod Sunday
Taillon (ankle) will start Sunday's season finale against the Rays, James Wagner of The New York Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon's status was unclear after he exited Tuesday's start early due to aggravating a prior ankle injury. However, he threw a successful bullpen session Friday and will be ready to start a pivotal final game of the regular season for the Yankees. In his first abbreviated outing since returning from a three-week absence on Sep. 28, Taillon allowed one earned run on one hit and a walk while striking out two across 2.1 frames.
Oct 1, 2021
Throws successful bulloen
Taillon (ankle) threw a successful bullpen session Friday and is in the mix to start Sunday's season finale against the Rays, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon exited his start Tuesday against Toronto after aggravating the ankle injury which sent him to the injured list in early September. He threw off flat ground Thursday and off a mound Friday, however, so the setback doesn't seem to be a significant one.
Sep 30, 2021
Throws off flat ground
Taillon (ankle) threw off flat ground Thursday, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon appeared to aggravate his right ankle injury in Tuesday's start against the Blue Jays, and he's slated to undergo further testing this weekend. It's not yet clear whether he'll be able to return in 2021, but it's encouraging that he was able to throw two days after he sustained his injury.
Sep 29, 2021
Tests on ankle on tap
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that Taillon will undergo further testing on his right ankle when the club returns to New York this weekend before a timeline for the pitcher's recovery established, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
While Boone noted that Taillon was feeling "better than expected" after aggravating a right ankle tendon injury in Tuesday's start against the Blue Jays, the skipper was unwilling to speculate whether the right-hander would pitch again in 2021. Considering Taillon missed just under three weeks the first time he succumbed to the injury, he would seem to be at major risk of missing the entire ALDS, should the Yankees clinch a wild-card spot and win in the wild-card game. Taillon had been lined up to start Sunday's regular-season finale against the Rays, but the Yankees' plans for that contest are now unclear.
Sep 28, 2021
Pulled with injury
Taillon was removed during the third inning of Tuesday's start against the Blue Jays after appearing to aggravate his ankle injury, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon was sidelined the past three weeks with a right ankle tendon injury before being activated for Tuesday's outing, and he appeared to aggravate the injury and exited with an athletic trainer after recording only seven outs. He allowed one run on one hit with two strikeouts and a walk, and he won't factor in the decision. More importantly, the right-hander's availability is now up in the air for the final turn through the rotation and a potential postseason run.

Activated ahead of start
The Yankees reinstated Taillon (ankle) from the 10-day injured list Monday.
ANALYSIS
The transaction was made in advance of Taillon's scheduled start in Tuesday's series opener in Toronto. Sidelined since Sept. 9 with the right ankle tendon injury, Taillon built up to three innings during his rehab assignment at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, giving up two runs while striking out two in his lone start for the affiliate. He'll likely face a light cap with his pitch count Tuesday, the first of what's expected to be two outings this week for the right-hander. Taillon tentatively lines up to start Sunday's regular-season finale with the Rays in New York.
Sep 26, 2021
Lined up for Tuesday start
Taillon (ankle) is lined up to start Tuesday's game against Toronto, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon has missed just shy of three weeks with an ankle issue. If he does wind up returning Tuesday as expected, he'd have the possibility of a two-start week to end the season, as he'd be on turn to start Sunday's season finale against the Rays.
Sep 24, 2021
Likely to return next week
Manager Aaron Boone said Friday that Taillon (ankle) has a "good chance" to rejoin the Yankees' rotation during next week's series against the Blue Jays, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon is currently on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre but hasn't yet made an appearance. It's not yet clear whether he'll appear in the minors this weekend, but he's on track to rejoin the Yankees for the final week of the regular season. Boone didn't indicate which game Taillon will pitch in the series against Toronto that runs from Tuesday to Thursday.

Eyeing Wednesday rehab outing
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Taillon (ankle) will likely begin a minor-league rehab assignment Wednesday, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon will presumably report to either Double-A Somerset or Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for what should be only one rehab start before he rejoins the big club. The right-hander has been on the shelf for just two weeks with the right ankle tendon sprain, so the one start should be all he needs to fully ramp up. Due to off days this Thursday and next Monday, the Yankees will be able to get by with a four-man rotation until Oct. 2, though Taillon could be added to the mix a few days before then, if desired.
Sep 19, 2021
Nearing rehab assignment
Taillon (ankle) could make a minor-league rehab start during the coming week, Max Goodman of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon tossed a bullpen session Saturday, and his next step is expected to be a short rehab start within the next several days. If that goes well, the right-hander could subsequently return to the Yankees rotation, per Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record. Taillon's last big-league appearance was Sept. 6 against Toronto, when he gave up three runs in seven innings and suffered the loss.

Feels good after throwing session
Taillon (ankle) felt good after Wednesday's bullpen session, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon's throwing session Wednesday marked the first time he had thrown off a mound since he landed on the injured list in early September. The right-hander doesn't yet have a timetable to return to game action, but he's expected to throw another bullpen session Saturday. Taillon is eligible to return to the major-league roster as early as Friday, but he'll require some additional time to build up before he's activated.
Sep 15, 2021
Gets back on mound
Taillon (ankle) completed a bullpen session Wednesday, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
After playing catch Monday without any discomfort in his right ankle, Taillon was cleared to take the next step forward in his recovery from the injury by getting back on a mound. The Yankees will presumably re-evaluate Taillon on Thursday before determining whether he's ready to rejoin the rotation this weekend versus Cleveland, or if he'll need to first ramp back up with a simulated game or minor-league rehab assignment. Once Taillon is ready to go, he'll likely bump Luis Gil from New York's rotation.
Sep 13, 2021
Resumes throwing
Taillon (ankle) was spotted throwing on the field Monday prior to the Yankees' make-up game against the Twins, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon's presence on the field to begin the week suggests he responded well to the platelet-rich plasma injection he recently received in his right ankle, but he'll still need to get back on a mound and complete a bullpen session before the Yankees pinpoint a target date for his return from the 10-day injured list. With Taillon on the shelf, rookie Luis Gil will stick in the New York rotation for the time being and pick up his fifth start with the big club Monday.
Sep 9, 2021
Placed on 10-day injured list
Taillon was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right ankle tendon injury Thursday, retroactive to Sept. 7.
ANALYSIS
Taillon posted a quality start in Monday's loss to the Blue Jays when he allowed three runs in seven innings, but he apparently sustained an ankle injury. The severity of the issue isn't yet clear, but the right-hander will be forced to miss at least one turn through the rotation. The Yankees haven't yet announced who will take his place in the rotation, but right-hander Sal Romano's contract was selected Thursday.
Sep 6, 2021
Hit with loss in quality start
Taillon (8-6) took the loss in Monday's 8-0 rout at the hands of the Blue Jays, giving up three runs on three hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander didn't pitch too badly in delivering his eighth quality start of the year, tossing 62 of 94 pitches for strikes, but two of the three hits off Taillon left the yard and the Yankees' offense left him high and dry. He'll take a 4.41 ERA and 136:42 K:BB through 138.2 innings into his next outing.
Sep 1, 2021
Roughed up by Angels
Taillon (8-5) allowed six earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six across 4.2 innings, taking the loss to the Angels on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Taillon started off with three scoreless innings, but surrendered three runs in each of the fourth and fifth frames. He allowed a three-run homer to Jared Walsh to open up the scoring. Taillon has struggled lately, failing to record a quality outing over his past four starts. The 29-year-old's ERA and WHIP have climbed to 4.44 and 1.24. He has recorded 131 strikeouts in 131.2 innings this season.
Aug 27, 2021
Can't escape fourth inning
Taillon took a no-decision in Thursday's 7-6 win against Oakland, allowing five runs on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
After being staked to an early 6-0 lead and retiring the Athletics' first six batters, Taillon served up back-to-back homers to lead off the third then three more runs in the fourth and was promptly removed. This was the righty's shortest start since June 18 and snaps a streak of nine starts allowing three earned runs or less. Taillon's now failed to surpass five strikeouts in eight of his last nine starts to total 43 whiffs in 50.1 innings over the stretch.
Aug 19, 2021
Earns win over Twins
Taillon (8-4) allowed three earned runs on five hits while striking out five across 5.1 innings, earning the win over the Twins on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Taillon fired five shutout innings before struggling in the sixth. He recorded just one out before allowing three runs on four straight hits before being relieved. The Yankees' offense provided plenty of run support to keep him in line for the win. The 29-year-old has allowed three or less runs in each of his last nine starts. He has a 3.94 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 121 strikeouts in 123.1 innings.
Aug 15, 2021
Goes five innings in no-decision
Taillon allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Saturday. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The White Sox dinged Taillon for a run in each of the first three innings, but the right-hander put up zeroes over the next two frames and turned a 3-3 game over to the bullpen after five. Taillon has been a stabilizing force in the Yankees' rotation -- Saturday marked the first time since late June in which he's allowed more than two runs in a start -- logging 118 innings with a 3.89 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. He's tentatively lined up to make his start at home against the Twins.
Aug 10, 2021
Logs quality start Monday
Taillon pitched six innings against Kansas City on Monday, allowing an unearned run on four hits and two walks while striking out four. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander was sharp in what turned into an 11-inning affair, throwing 55 of 87 pitches for strikes and keeping Kansas City off the scoreboard through six frames. Taillon was pulled after allowing a single to lead off the seventh, and the Royals managed to get the runner home against Jonathan Loaisiga without collecting another hit in the frame. Taillon's strong effort continued a run of seven straight starts since the beginning of July in which he has allowed two of fewer earned runs. Over that stretch, he has registered a 1.25 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 39:13 K:BB across 43.1 innings. Taillon will look to keep things going in his next start, which is expected to come on the road against the White Sox this weekend.
Aug 4, 2021
Strikes out 10 in no-decision
Taillon allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk with 10 strikeouts in 6.1 innings versus Baltimore on Wednesday. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Taillon turned in his fourth quality start in his last six appearances, although he emerged with a no-decision for the second time in that span. The right-hander missed out on the win as he exited with the game tied before the Yankees' offense rallied ahead in the bottom of the seventh inning. The 29-year-old continues to lower his ERA, which is now 4.04 with a 1.22 WHIP and 108:32 K:BB through 107 innings this season. He's expected to make his next start on the road in Kansas City next week.
Jul 30, 2021
Fans five in win
Taillon (7-4) earned the win over Miami on Friday. He allowed five hits and two walks while striking out five over 5.2 scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander benefited from facing a Miami team depleted of talent at the trade deadline. Taillon was an out short of a quality start, but he's still allowed just six runs (four earned) in 31 innings in July. His strong work lately has dropped his ERA to 4.11 with a 1.24 WHIP and 98:31 K:BB across 100.2 innings overall. The 29-year-old lines up for another easy start next week versus Baltimore.
Jul 24, 2021
Works through early struggles
Taillon (6-4) allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out four across seven innings to earn the win Saturday against the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Taillon allowed one run to cross the plate in each of his first three innings, though only one was earned. However, he fought through the early issues to complete seven innings for the second time in his last four starts. In that span, he's allowed only four earned runs across 25.1 frames while also punching out 20 and walking eight. Overall, Taillon has a 4.36 ERA with 93 strikeouts across 95 innings.
Jul 18, 2021
Fourth straight winning decision
Taillon (5-4) won Sunday's 9-1 game with Boston, pitching 5.1 scoreless innings and permitting four hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Taillon held a powerful Boston lineup at bay all game, only encountering trouble in the fourth and sixth innings when he allowed runners to reach second and third with one out, but New York was able to escape both jams unscathed. The win is Taillon's fourth in his last five starts and he hasn't lost since May 31, an eight-start stretch that's seen his ERA improve to 4.60.
Jul 11, 2021
Turns in another quality start
Taillon allowed two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings in Sunday's loss to the Astros. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Taillon was in line for his fourth consecutive win before the Yankees' bullpen melted down in the ninth inning. The only damage against him came via the long ball; he allowed a pair of solo homers to Martin Maldonado and Kyle Tucker. He's now allowed two or fewer runs in four of his last five starts, bringing his ERA down to 4.90 through 17 starts. Taillon hasn't been hit with a loss since May 31.
Jul 7, 2021
Cruises to easy victory
Taillon (4-4) earned the win Tuesday against the Mariners after allowing one run on four hits and a walk while striking out nine over seven innings.
ANALYSIS
Taillon was given a massive lead to work with early on after the Yankees climbed out to an 8-0 advantage through the first three innings. The 29-year-old still held his own and delivered a gem after he was roughed up his last time out. Taillon went seven innings for the first time in 2021 and tied his season-high in strikeouts while inducing 11 total swinging strikes. He's experienced an uptick in strikeouts this year, averaging a career-best 9.6 K/9 but still owns an inflated 5.05 ERA to go along with a 1.30 WHIP and 82:22 K:BB over 76.2 innings. He's in line to end the week with a tough road tilt against the Astros before the league heads into the All-Star break.
Jun 30, 2021
Tagged for five runs in win
Taillon (3-4) earned the win Tuesday against the Angels despite allowing five runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and a walk over 5.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
All the damage off the right-hander came via the long ball, as Shohei Ohtani went deep twice and Jose Iglesias also homered. It's the first time since April 13, his second outing of the season, that Taillon surrendered more than four runs. He has a 5.43 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 73:21 K:BB across 69.2 innings this season.
Jun 24, 2021
Sharp against Royals
Taillon (2-4) allowed one earned run on five hits and two walks while striking out six across 6.1 innings to earn the win Thursday against the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Taillon delivered his highest strikeout mark in his last six starts, backed by 16 called strikes and 12 swinging strikes on 96 total pitches. He also matched his longest outing of the campaign, working over five innings for only the third time in 14 appearances. Taillon's inability to work deep into games has limited him to only two wins on the campaign. His 5.18 ERA is also uninspiring, but a more impressive 69:20 K:BB across 64.1 frames on the season suggests better results could be on the way.
Jun 19, 2021
Settles for no-decision
Taillon allowed two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out five in 4.2 innings in Friday's loss to the Athletics. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Taillon struggled mightily in his last outing and allowed four runs in a third of an inning, but he fared slightly better in Friday's start. The right-hander has allowed at least two runs in each of his last four appearances, but he's only been charged with one loss during that time. He tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Royals on Thursday.
Jun 13, 2021
Chased in first inning Saturday
Taillon allowed four earned runs on five hits and one walk while recording just one out in the first inning of Saturday's loss to the Phillies. He did not record a strikeout and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
The Phillies bats did not wait around against Taillon, as each of the first four batters recorded singles off the right-hander. A walk, sacrifice fly and a fifth single ultimately ended Taillon's day after just one-third of an inning, though the Yankees rallied back late to take the 29-year-old off the hook for the loss. The ugly outing increased Taillon's ERA to 5.74 on the campaign, but he'll look to get on track next Friday in his start against the Athletics.
Jun 5, 2021
Settles for no-decision
Taillon allowed three runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts over 5.1 innings versus Boston on Saturday. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Taillon ran into trouble in the sixth inning when Rafael Devers hit a game-tying two-RBI single. Jonathan Loaisiga also allowed an inherited runner to score for the third run on Taillon's line. The right-hander has gone six starts without a win (two losses, four no-decisions). He has a 5.09 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 58:16 K:BB across 53 innings this season. He projects to make his next start in Philadelphia next weekend.
May 31, 2021
Drops decision to Tampa
Taillon (1-4) took the loss Monday, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks over five innings as the Yankees fell 3-1 to the Rays. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
After two scoreless frames, Tampa Bay tagged Taillon for single runs in the next three innings. The right-hander exited after 85 pitches (51 strikes) as he failed to pitch past five innings for the fourth straight start, and he'll carry a 5.10 ERA and 55:15 K:BB through 47.2 innings into his next outing.
May 23, 2021
Tosses five scoreless frames
Taillon allowed two hits and two walks while striking out four in five scoreless innings in Sunday's win over the White Sox. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Taillon had given up at least three runs in each of his last three starts but recorded his first scoreless outing of the season Sunday. However, the right-hander was forced to settle for a no-decision after the White Sox put together a late-game rally. Taillon has now posted a 5.06 ERA and 50:12 K:BB in 42.2 innings to begin the year. He tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against Detroit on Saturday.
May 19, 2021
Struggles in no-decision
Taillon didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 7-4 win over the Rangers, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander once again was unable to give the Yankees much length, and Taillon has now pitched past five innings only once in eight starts. Despite a stellar 46:10 K:BB through 37.2 innings, he'll take a 5.73 ERA fueled by a 2.15 HR/9 into his next outing.
May 14, 2021
Fans nine despite loss
Taillon (1-3) was tagged with the loss Thursday against the Rays after giving up four runs on six hits and two walks while fanning nine across 4.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Taillon gave up four runs -- tying his season-worst mark -- but also recorded a season-high mark in strikeouts. Taillon owns an impressive 43:8 K:BB through 33.1 innings, but it's worth noting he has given up three or more runs in three of his last four outings.
May 8, 2021
Settles for no-decision
Taillon allowed three runs on three hits and a walk while striking out five in 6.1 innings in Friday's loss to the Nationals. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Taillon picked up his first win of the season in his last outing, but he allowed three runs on a pair of homers in the top of the second inning Friday. The Yankees tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, and Taillon was forced to settle for a no-decision. The right-hander now has a 5.02 ERA and 34:6 K:BB in 28.2 innings across his first six starts of the season. He tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against Tampa Bay on Thursday.
May 1, 2021
Picks up first victory
Taillon (1-2) earned the win Saturday versus the Tigers after giving up one run on three hits with eight strikeouts and three walks over five innings.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old set a season high with eight strikeouts and generated 16 swinging strikes on only 79 pitches to record his first victory in exactly two years. Taillon has a 5.24 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 29:5 K:BB through 22.1 innings this season, and he tentatively lines up to pitch next weekend versus the Nationals.
Apr 25, 2021
Gives up four runs Sunday
Taillon (0-2) allowed four runs on five hits and no walks while striking out six in four innings to take the loss against Cleveland on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Taillon was sharp in his last start and began Sunday's outing by tossing three scoreless frames. However, he allowed three singles with no outs in the bottom of the fourth inning before Franmil Reyes blasted a three-run shot to put Taillon in line for his second loss of 2021. The right-hander has posted a 6.23 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 17.1 innings across his first four starts of the season. Taillon will attempt to bounce back at home against the Tigers on Saturday.
Apr 20, 2021
Sharp in no-decision
Taillon didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 3-1 win over Atlanta, giving up one run on four hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander threw 55 of 80 pitches before hitting the showers, and his only stumble came in the third inning when he gave up back-to-back doubles to Guillermo Heredia and Ehire Adrianza. Taillon is still looking for his first win, or first quality start, of the season, and he'll take a 5.40 ERA and 15:2 K:BB through 13.1 innings into his next outing Sunday in Cleveland.
Apr 13, 2021
Struggles in first loss
Taillon (0-1) was charged with the loss against the Blue Jays on Tuesday, surrendering five runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out three across 3.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Hopes were high for the 29-year-old after turning in a decent start in his season debut, during which he allowed two runs on three hits while striking out seven across 4.2 innings against the Orioles. This time around, Taillon struggled to quiet Toronto's bats and was pulled in the fourth frame after serving up a home run to Marcus Semien and an RBI double to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. In all, Taillon threw 59 of his 84 pitches for strikes, hitting a batter and tossing a wild pitch in the process. The right-hander was making just his second start since 2019 following a recovery period after his second Tommy John surgery. It's worth noting that a former bout with testicular cancer has pumped the brakes along the way as well. Taillon will get another chance at home Sunday versus Tampa Bay.
Apr 8, 2021
Strikes out seven in debut
Taillon allowed two runs on three hits while striking out seven across 4.2 innings in Wednesday's game against the Orioles. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Taillon was once considered the next big pitching prospect for the Pirates before two Tommy John surgeries and a run-in with testicular cancer halted his career and his progression. Finally healthy once again, everyone was intrigued to see how the 29-year-old would bounce back in his return to the mound and he did not disappoint. Taillon didn't allow a base runner through three innings but was punished in the fourth as he let up two solo home runs in a span of three hitters to put the Yankees in a 2-1 deficit. He ultimately was pulled after 74 pitches as manager Aaron Boone said before the season that they would be cautious with his workload early on. Taillon would've had a phenomenal outing if not for the two home runs allowed, however, he did record his final six outs via strikeout and did not issue any walks. He's expected to make his next appearance on Tuesday against the Blue Jays.
Mar 28, 2021
Won't debut until April 7
Manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Taillon won't start until the Yankees' sixth game of the season April 7 against the Orioles, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon will head into Opening Day as the team's nominal fifth starter, with Boone noting that he wants to "slow play" the right-hander as he returns from his second career Tommy John procedure, which he underwent in August 2019. Expect the Yankees to monitor Taillon's workloads carefully to begin the season, while also building in extra days of rest for the 29-year-old whenever possible. Taillon has allowed only one run while striking out 14 over 8.1 innings this spring, but he's also walked four while yielding a .257 batting average against.
Mar 23, 2021
Strong start to spring
Through four Grapefruit League appearances, Taillon has given up one run on nine hits and four walks while striking out 14 in 8.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
The Yankees haven't asked Taillon to cover any more than 2.2 innings in any of his four spring outings, but the right-hander has looked good thus far in his comeback from Tommy John surgery. Expect New York to exercise some caution with Taillon's pitch and innings counts early on during the regular season, but the 29-year-old should get a longer leash as the campaign rolls along. He's projected to open the season as the Yankees' No. 3 starter.
Mar 7, 2021
Solid in second spring outing
Taillon started and tossed two scoreless innings against the Pirates in Saturday's Grapefruit League game, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out four.
ANALYSIS
Taillon was originally scheduled to pitch behind Gerrit Cole in the exhibition contest, but the Yankees instead opted to have Cole throwing a live batting practice session in Tampa while Taillon got the start against Pittsburgh. Taillon breezed through the first inning before allowing a pair of singles and a walk in the second frame, but he was able to escape without allowing any runs thanks to an inning-ending strikeout. The right-hander has now completed three scoreless innings this spring as he ramps up for the third-starter spot in the Yankees' regular-season rotation.
Feb 24, 2021
Faces hitters Wednesday
Taillon (elbow) tossed a live batting practice session Wednesday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon's ability to face hitters this early in spring training would seem to suggest that the Yankees are confident that he's made a full recovery from the May 2019 Tommy John surgery that sidelined him for the entire 2020 campaign, his final season in Pittsburgh. After surrendering a quartet of prospects to acquire him in January, the Yankees are counting on a healthy Taillon to re-emerge as a reliable No. 2 or 3 starter behind his former Pirates rotation mate, staff ace Gerrit Cole. Expect the Yankees to use Taillon judiciously in games during the Grapefruit League slate, but he should be ready to handle a 75-to-100-pitch workload in starts by the start of the regular season in April.
Jan 24, 2021
Shipped to Yankees
Taillon (elbow) was traded from the Pirates to the Yankees on Sunday in exchange for prospects Miguel Yajure, Roansy Contreras, Maikel Escott and Canaan Smith, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Trade talks surrounding the 29-year-old began to intensify Saturday, and it didn't take long for the two sides to come to terms on a trade. Taillon didn't pitch last season while recovering from his second Tommy John surgery in May 2019, but he delivered a 3.20 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 179:46 K:BB over 191 innings during the 2018 campaign. The right-hander is expected to be ready for the start of the 2021 season and should slot into the middle of New York's starting rotation.

Reaches deal with Buccos
Taillon (elbow) signed a one-year, $2.25 million contract with the Pirates on Wednesday to avoid arbitration, Alex Stumpf of DKPittsburghSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old sat out the entirety of the 2020 campaign while recovering from Tommy John surgery, so he agreed to the same $2.25 million figure from last year. Taillon underwent the procedure in August 2019 and was throwing live batting practice during the 2020 campaign, so he should be ready for the start of spring training in February. He last had a full season of work in 2018 with a 3.20 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 179:46 K:BB over 191 innings.
Sep 9, 2020
Tosses 25 pitches
Taillon (elbow) threw 25 pitches at the Pirates' alternate training site Wednesday, Alex Stumpf of DKPittsburghSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon isn't expected to return to game action before the 2021 season as he continues to recover from his second Tommy John surgery. The right-hander has appeared to shorten his arm action recently, creating optimism that he could still pitch for the Pirates following his return to full health.
Aug 26, 2020
Throwing at alternate site
Taillon (elbow) will throw live batting practice Wednesday at the alternate site in Altoona, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Former Pirates beat writer Travis Sawchik, now of FiveThirtyEight, retweeted a video that Taillon posted, noting that he has shortened his arm action, similar to what Lucas Giolito and many Cleveland pitchers have done in recent years. This may provide optimism that Taillon can be the rare pitcher who successfully recovers from two Tommy John surgeries. He is not expected back until the 2021 season.
Jun 30, 2020
Will take 40th man spot
Taillon (elbow), who will not pitch in the majors in 2020, will attend camp in Pittsburgh as part of his rehabilitation, DK Pittsburgh Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
He'll take the spot of Edgar Santana, who was suspended for 80 games due to PED usage. The move will allow Taillon to continue working with the medical staff in Pittsburgh. In an effort to better maintain his health following a second Tommy John surgery, the righty has made several mechanical adjustments. He's shortened his arm action in his throwing motion and is keeping the ball closer to his body, moves intended to put less stress on his arm and elbow.
Jun 24, 2020
Gets back on mound
Taillon (elbow) completed a bullpen session at PNC Park on Tuesday, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Now 10 months into his recovery from his second Tommy John surgery, Taillon looks to be progressing as expected now that he's taken another important step forward by getting back on the mound. The right-hander has already been ruled out for the 2020 season, but he'll likely to continue to stick around in Pittsburgh to have his rehab program monitored by the Pirates' medical staff. Taillon could be cleared to face hitters before the season ends, which would bode well for his chances of entering spring training without any major restrictions.
May 7, 2020
Throwing four times per week
Taillon (elbow) indicated Thursday via his personal Twitter account that he's resumed throwing four off flat ground four time per week.
ANALYSIS
Taillon is just under eight months removed from the second Tommy John surgery of his career and appears to have avoided any setbacks thus far in his rehab program. He should be able to get back on the mound and face hitters before the season ends, but the Pirates have already determined that he won't pitch in any games in 2020.
Apr 22, 2020
Resumes throwing
Taillon (elbow) resumed throwing this week after taking the first of two scheduled breaks in his program, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Apparently Taillon is getting after it again after a built-in break in his throwing progression. The Pirates are understandably taking it slow with the right-hander given that he's coming back from his second Tommy John surgery. A 2020 return has already been ruled out and Taillon will face limitations in 2021 as well, assuming he's even ready by then. The book is still very much open for Taillon, but history has generally not been kind to two-time TJ recipients.

2020 return ruled out
Taillon (elbow) will not return in 2020 even if the season is considerably delayed, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon underwent Tommy John surgery back in August and has been throwing for over two months. A typical recovery timeline for that procedure would rule him out for over a year. It's conceivable he could be ready to pitch if the schedule were extended deep into the fall, but the Pirates have already ruled out such plans. Taillon can remain completely off single-season draft boards.

Extends throwing distance
Taillon (elbow) has been throwing from 120 feet, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon is slowly working his way back from August Tommy John surgery. A typical recovery timeline in a typical season would rule him out for the entirety of the campaign. Even if the schedule ends up being extended late into fall, his odds of appearing still seem quite slim.

Placed on IL
The Pirates placed Taillon (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Thursday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon went under the knife last August for the second Tommy John surgery of his career, so the Pirates aren't counting on him to contribute at any point in 2020. His move to the 60-day IL is merely procedural, as it frees up a 40-man roster spot for newly signed outfielder Jarrod Dyson.

Resumes throwing
Taillon (elbow) resumed throwing Monday, Stephen J. Nesbitt of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon underwent the second Tommy John surgery of his career in August and has already been ruled out from appearing at any point in the upcoming season. The fact that he's already throwing bodes well for his return in 2021, but he still has a long road ahead of him before he's ready to pitch again.

No arbitrator needed
Taillon (elbow) and the Pirates avoided arbitration with a one-year, $2.25 million contract Friday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Taillon made just seven starts before being shut down with a flexor strain in early May. He suffered a setback soon after he resumed throwing in mid-July and eventually underwent Tommy John surgery in mid-August. He's expected to miss the entirety of the 2020 campaign.
