Begins weight-bearing exercises
Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said Wednesday that Duran (toe) has begun weight-bearing exercises, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran is more than two months removed from Aug. 30 surgery to repair the flexor tendon in his left big toe and should be fully recovered well before the beginning of spring training in February. The 27-year-old center fielder enjoyed a mini breakout with the Red Sox in 2023, slashing .295/.346/.482 with eight homers and 24 steals across 102 games.
Sep 4, 2023
Transferred to 60-day IL
Duran (toe) was transferred from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list Monday, Chad Jennings of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The transaction frees up a 40-man roster spot for waiver claim Logan Gillaspie. Duran had already been ruled out for the remainder of the season following surgery last week to repair a torn flexor tendon in his left big toe.
Aug 30, 2023
Undergoes toe surgery
Duran underwent successful surgery Wednesday to repair a torn flexor tendon in his left big toe, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran has been sidelined for the past week and found out Monday that surgery was needed to repair his toe injury. He will miss the remainder of the season but should be ready to go for the start of spring training. When healthy this season, Duran looked like one of the position players the Red Sox can build around, slashing .295/.346/.482 with eight home runs and 24 stolen bases in 102 games.
Aug 29, 2023
Requires season-ending surgery
Duran was diagnosed with turf toe and will undergo season-ending surgery Wednesday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republicanreports.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old was fitted for a walking boot Aug. 23 after he landed on the injured list with a toe sprain, and his season will come to an early end after he visited a specialist Monday. Duran didn't make Boston's Opening Day roster but was called up in mid-April and finished with 34 doubles, eight homers, 24 steals, 40 RBI and 46 runs in 102 games. He'll have more than six months to go through his recovery and rehab before the start of spring training in February.
Aug 25, 2023
Seeing specialist for toe
Duran will visit a specialist Monday for his injured left toe, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran and the Red Sox are still looking for answers following multiple rounds of imaging scans. The 26-year-old hurt his toe last weekend while climbing the outfield wall at Yankee Stadium and seems certain to remain on the 10-day injured list for longer than 10 days.
Aug 23, 2023
Placed in walking boot
Duran was fitted for a walking boot Wednesday as the Red Sox continue to evaluate the MRI results on his left toe, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran landed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday after spraining a toe on his left foot while climbing the wall in Sunday's series finale against the Yankees. It sounds like his stay on the IL is going to last longer than 10 days, but there should be more clarity in general later this week. Adam Duvall has been covering center field for Boston in Duran's absence. Wilyer Abreu got the start in left field Wednesday at Houston.
Aug 22, 2023
Officially lands on IL
Duran was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a left toe sprain, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
We already knew this move was likely, and now it's official. Adam Duvall should get the bulk of the starts in center field while Duran is sidelined, and prospect Wilyer Abreu, who was recalled in a corresponding move, could also get some work in the short term.
Aug 22, 2023
Headed to injured list
Duran will be placed on the 10-day injured list prior to Tuesday's game in Houston, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
The MRI results on Duran's injured left toe have not yet been revealed, but the Red Sox are prepared to be without the outfielder for at least the next week and a half. Duran injured his toe during Sunday's victory over the Yankees. Wilyer Abreu will be summoned to replace Duran on the roster and could see some playing time, although Boston figures to go with Masataka Yoshida, Adam Duvall and Alex Verdugo in the outfield most days.
Aug 21, 2023
Headed for further imaging
Duran (toe) will have an MRI on Tuesday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox should know more about whether Duran will require a trip to the injured list after receiving the outfielder's MRI results. Adam Duvall would likely see regular playing time in center field if Duran is placed on the IL.
Aug 21, 2023
IL stint not ruled out
Duran (toe) could still be placed on the injured list, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
There is reason for optimism regarding Duran's status, as there are no X-rays scheduled on his injured toe and he did not visit a doctor after his early exit from Sunday's game. However, he is not starting Monday, and manager Alex Cora said the team wants to see how Duran feels Tuesday before deciding on his next step.
Aug 21, 2023
Not starting Monday
Duran (toe) is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Astros, according to Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
The toe injury that forced Duran from Sunday's game is not believed to be a long-term issue, but it will prevent him from starting Monday's contest.
Aug 21, 2023
Removal was precautionary
Duran is expected to be fine after being lifted from Sunday's win over the Yankees with a left toe injury, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran's removal was considered precautionary, as he didn't even need X-rays and the Red Sox have not added anyone to the taxi squad. Of more concern are Duran's struggles at the plate so far in August, as he's been limited to just a .602 OPS so far in 17 games.
Aug 20, 2023
Dealing with toe injury
Duran was removed from Sunday's win over the Yankees with a left toe contusion, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base before being lifted from Sunday's contest with the injury. It doesn't appear to be a serious issue, so the 26-year-old should be considered day-to-day until more information is available.
Aug 19, 2023
Slumping, dropped in order
Duran batted seventh and went 0-for-4 in Friday's 8-3 win over the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Duran has hit the skids of late, going 3-for-32 (.094) over the last 12 games. The slump appears to have cost him the leadoff role against right-handers, as Alex Verdugo led off for the third consecutive game against a righty starter. Red Sox manager Alex Cora told Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com that he's spoken with the outfielder, who recently posted two Instagram stories that seemed to reference recurring struggles. One of those stories was captioned "falling back into that place I fought so hard to get out of." Duran has looked like a different hitter in 2023 and rebounded every time he hit a slump.
Aug 17, 2023
Held out versus lefty
Duran is absent from the lineup for Thursday's tilt against the Nationals, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox have faced a slew of left-handers lately, including Thursday, which has resulted in Duran starting just two of the last six contests. Masataka Yoshida, Rob Refsnyder and Adam Duvall will be Boston's trio of starting outfielders against southpaw Patrick Corbin.
Aug 16, 2023
Sitting against lefty
Duran is not in the lineup Wednesday versus the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Adam Duvall will play center field and sixth as the Red Sox face off against left-hander MacKenzie Gore. Duran has enjoyed a breakout season in Boston, but he continues to sit versus most lefties.
Aug 13, 2023
Out against lefty
Duran isn't in Boston's lineup for Sunday's game against Detroit, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez will take the mound for Detroit to begin Sunday's game, meaning Duran will remain on the bench. Rob Refsnyder will start in center field instead and bat in the leadoff spot.
Aug 11, 2023
Sitting against lefty
Duran is not in the lineup Friday against the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
Adam Duvall will cover center field and bat third as the Red Sox take on left-hander Tarik Skubal. Duran has slashed .167/.200/.333 in just 25 plate appearances versus lefties this year.
Aug 11, 2023
Dropped to seventh
Duran batted seventh and went 0-for-2 with a walk in Thursday's 2-0 win over Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
Duran has been the team's leadoff hitter the last month and usually sits against a lefty. The Royals used left-hander Austin Cox as an opener and planned to have righty Alec Marsh throw bulk innings, and Red Sox manager Alex Cora had Duran in the lineup to get at-bats against a righty. As it turned out, Cox threw two innings and faced Duran for his first at-bat. Marsh eventually finished off the game. The Red Sox open a series Friday against Detroit, which will start lefty Tarik Skubal, so expect Duran to sit in favor of Rob Refsnyder.
Aug 7, 2023
Sitting versus lefty
Duran is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Royals, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It's the fourth straight time Duran has been on the bench when the Red Sox have faced a lefty, although that covers a three-week stretch. Rob Refsnyder is in center field and Masataka Yoshida is in left.
Aug 5, 2023
Belts eighth homer
Duran went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's 7-3 loss to the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox had only six hits total on the night and Duran was one of the few bright spots for the club, with his third-inning shot off Alek Manoah supplying most of Boston's offense. The 26-year-old outfielder has gone yard in back-to-back games, extending his hitting streak to seven games in the process, and since the beginning of July he's slashing a dazzling .384/.424/.698 with four of his eight homers on the season, along with eight steals, 10 RBI and 22 runs in 26 contests.
Aug 3, 2023
Streak reaches six games
Duran went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 6-3 loss to Seattle.
ANALYSIS
Duran, who extended a hit streak to six straight games, has hit safely in 10 of the last 11, going 13-for-42 with three doubles, two home runs, four RBI, six steals and nine runs scored. The home run was his seventh. The Red Sox essentially stood pad at the trade deadline, which means Duran will continue to share center field with Adam Duvall, who it was speculated to be a likely candidate to be traded.
Aug 1, 2023
Swipes two bags Monday
Duran went 1-for-4 with a walk, two stolen bases and a run scored in Monday's 6-2 loss to the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Duran ends July having hit safely in eight of his last nine games. For the month, the outfielder batted .384 (28-for-73) with eight steals and two home runs. He's settled into a spot atop the Red Sox's order as he continues to enjoy a breakout campaign. Duran is slashing .314/.366/.504 with six home runs, 23 steals, 35 RBI and 41 runs scored through 85 contests overall.
Jul 30, 2023
On bench to open Sunday's game
Duran is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
The lefty-hitting Duran will be riding pine to begin the game while southpaw Scott Alexander opens the game for the Giants, but Duran could be a candidate to replace Rob Refsnyder in the outfield once right-handed primary pitcher Ross Stripling is summoned from the San Francisco bullpen. Duran has continued to thrive at the dish coming out of the All-Star break, as he's produced a .279/.354/.419 slash line with one home run and four stolen bases through his first 13 second-half contests.
Jul 29, 2023
Removed for pinch hitter
Duran went 1-for-3 and was caught stealing in Friday's 3-2 win over San Franciso.
ANALYSIS
Duran was removed for pinch hitter Rob Refsnyder with a runner on second base in the top of the eighth inning when lefty Taylor Rogers entered for the Giants. Refsnyder delivered Boston's third run, an insurance score to make it 3-1 before San Francisco plated a run in the bottom of the frame. It should be noted that as good as Duran has been in 2023, just 42 of his 295 plate appearances have come against left-handers. He has a .754 OPS against them, which is an improvement over his previous years in the majors, but Refsnyder has hammered southpaws in 2023, posting a .932 OPS against them.
Jul 26, 2023
Steals two bases in win
Duran 1-for-4, was hit by a pitch, and stole two bases in Tuesday's 7-1 win over Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Duran continues to produce at the plate and on the bases atop the order for Boston. The outfielder has hit in four consecutive games and recorded four stolen bases during that stretch. Duran, who consistently registered double-digit steals in the minors, is up to 21 thefts in MLB this season.
Jul 19, 2023
Idle versus lefty
Duran is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Boston will give the lefty-hitting Duran the day off Wednesday while a southpaw (Ken Waldichuk) takes the bump for Oakland. Adam Duvall will patrol center field while Duran takes a seat.
Jul 16, 2023
Sits against lefty
Duran isn't in Boston's lineup Sunday against the Cubs, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
With left-hander Justin Steele set to take the mound for Chicago, the lefty-hitting Duran will stay put in Boston's dugout to begin Sunday's contest. Rob Refsnyder will take over in center field and bat in the leadoff spot.
Jul 9, 2023
Gets rest in series finale
Duran is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Duran, who picked up starts in five of the Red Sox's previous six games, will cede center-field duties to Enrique Hernandez in the series finale with Oakland. The third-year outfielder went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, a stolen base, three RBI and two additional runs in Saturday's 10-3 win, bringing his slash line to .591/.591/1.773 over seven games in July.
Jul 9, 2023
Continues tear
Duran went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, one double, an additional RBI and two additional runs scored and one steal in Saturday's win over the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Duran turned in his fourth multi-hit effort of July and cranked his fifth long ball of the season. Since the beginning of the month, Duran is 13-for-22 (.591) with six doubles, 10 runs, four RBI and two stolen bases in seven games. He'll likely have one more chance to maintain his hot streak prior to the All-Star break, as the Red Sox take on expected starter JP Sears and the Athletics on Sunday.
Jul 6, 2023
Not in Thursday's lineup
Duran is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Duran started the past three games and went 8-for-12 with five doubles, a triple, a steal and five runs, but he'll take a seat Thursday versus Texas righty Nathan Eovaldi. Adam Duvall will man center field and bat fifth.
Jul 6, 2023
Steals, scores in win
Duran went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and run scored in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Duran put his legs to work immediately. Following a leadoff single in the bottom of the first inning, he stole second base and came around on Justin Turner's single. It was his 16th stolen base and fifth in the last nine games. Just when it looked like Duran's bubble had burst -- a .205 average and .559 OPS over 28 games from May 20 to June 22 -- the outfielder has bounced back. Duran is 14-for-31 (.452) with five doubles, a triple and a home run over the last nine contests. He looks like a different hitter after a couple of failed stints in the majors the previous two seasons. The player that let poor results snowball on him in 2021 and 2022 has not reappeared in 2023.
Jul 2, 2023
Massive five hit day
Duran went 5-for-5 with four doubles and three runs scored in Sunday's win over Toronto.
ANALYSIS
Duran went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate, marking his first career game with more than three hits. The 26-year-old also amassed four doubles Sunday, pushing him into a tie for the sixth most doubles in MLB with 25 despite having appeared in only 64 games thus far. Through 233 plate appearances, Duran is slashing .305/.356/.479 with four long balls and 15 stolen bases but is striking out 28.3 percent of the time.
Jun 25, 2023
Runs wild Saturday
Duran went 2-for-5 with one run scored and three steals in Saturday's loss against the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
After going 0-for-9 with five strikeouts across his previous two games, Duran turned in a massive outing Saturday. He set a season high in swipes, taking second base three different times on as many pitchers. His single run scored came in the top of the ninth, where he reached on an infield single, stole second and then advanced to third on a wild pitch before being driven in by Justin Turner to tie the game. Though Duran has lost playing time since Adam Duvall returned from the injured list, he remains a solid fantasy option when in the lineup, slashing .289/.346/.443 with 21 doubles and 14 stolen bases through 194 at-bats.
Jun 20, 2023
Not in Tuesday's lineup
Duran is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's tilt against in Minnesota, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran has seen his playing time cut since Adam Duvall returned, although he had started each of the previous three contests. He'll grab a seat for the start of this one as Duvall plays center field and Masataka Yoshida handles left.
Jun 20, 2023
Rips three doubles in win
Duran went 3-for-3 with three doubles and two RBI against Minnesota in a 9-3 victory Monday.
ANALYSIS
Duran finished with three hits for the fourth time this season, and this was the second instance in which he collected a trio of doubles in a single contest. The outfielder's big performance pushed his season average back up to .300 for the first time since May 27. Duran went through a cold spell in early June but is batting .478 (11-for-23) with five doubles and three thefts over his past 10 games.
Jun 14, 2023
On bench versus lefty
Duran is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Red Sox manager Alex Cora is rolling out a right-handed-heavy lineup to counter Rockies southpaw Austin Gomber, so Duran and fellow lefty hitters Masataka Yoshida and Rafael Devers will all head to the bench. Duran previously took a seat in Tuesday's 7-6 loss against the Rockies' Chase Anderson, and the 26-year-old's opportunities to play versus right-handed pitchers are expected to decline moving forward following Adam Duvall's recent return from the injured list.
Jun 12, 2023
In leadoff spot Monday
Duran is starting in left field and batting leadoff Monday versus the Rockies, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran was on the bench for Adam Duvall's first two games back from the injured list but has now started each of the last two contests and batted leadoff both times. It's just the third start of his career in left field, as Masataka Yoshida is getting a day off. Duran looks to be the Red Sox' fourth outfielder now, but he should be a fairly active one.
Jun 10, 2023
Sits again Saturday
Duran remains on the bench for Saturday's game against the Yankees, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran emerged as Boston's everyday center fielder in the absence of Adam Duvall (wrist) and settled in well, with his .278/.335/.432 slash line representing a significant improvement on the .219/.269/.354 line he managed in his first two partial MLB campaigns. His performance had been tailing off recently, however, as he hit just .148/.200/.197 over his last 17 games. That slump may have condemned him to a true bench role role, as Duvall has gotten the start in center field in both games since his return from the 60-day injured list Friday even though both contests have been against right-handed pitchers.
Jun 9, 2023
Day off Friday
Duran is not in the starting lineup Friday against the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Duran will take a seat after he went 3-for-10 with a double and an RBI over the three-game series with Cleveland. Adam Duvall (wrist) was activated from the 60-day injured list Friday and will start in center field and bat fifth in the series opener with New York.
Jun 9, 2023
Replaces Verdugo
Duran batted leadoff and went 2-for-5 with an RBI in Thursday's 10-3 loss to Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Duran was moved up to leadoff after Alex Verdugo was benched for the game due to a lack of hustle during Wednesday's game. Verdugo is expected back Friday and presumably will return to the leadoff spot. The Red Sox are also expected to activate Adam Duvall (wrist) from the injured list, which will impact Duran's playing time going forward.
Jun 7, 2023
Starts Tuesday
Duran started in center field and went 1-for-2 with a double in Tuesday's 5-4 win over Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Duran, who was held out of the starting nine Monday against Tampa Bay lefty Shane McClanahan, returned as a starter against Guardians righty Shane Bieber. The Red Sox gave Duran a vote of confidence Monday, when the team designated Raimel Tapia for assignment to make room for Christian Arroyo's return from a hamstring injury. It's up to Duran to fulfill the team's belief. After a scorching hot start when he first arrived from Triple-A Worcester, Duran has cooled off significantly, batting .132 over the last 15 games. With Adam Duvall (wrist) due back Friday, Duran's opportunities are expected to be reduced.
Jun 5, 2023
Taking seat Monday
Duran is absent from the lineup for Monday's tilt versus the Rays, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
He'll get a day off as the Rays throw lefty ace Shane McClanahan, with Enrique Hernandez patrolling center field. Duran has just a .336 OPS with a 42.3 percent strikeout rate over his last 13 games, which isn't great timing with Adam Duvall (wrist) due back later this week.
Jun 3, 2023
On bench for afternoon game
Duran will sit for the first half of Saturday's doubleheader against the Rays, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran will likely return to the lineup against Tyler Glasnow in the nightcap but won't be asked to start twice in one day. He hit .987 OPS through his first 29 games this season, but his .308 OPS over his last 10 games could lead to a loss in playing time if the slump continues. Rob Refsnyder will start in center field in his absence.
May 26, 2023
On bench amid slump
Duran is not in the starting lineup Friday at Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Raimel Tapia is starting in center field and batting leadoff versus the Diamondbacks and right-hander Brandon Pfaadt. Duran was terrific in April and the early part of May, but he stands 0-for-19 with eight strikeouts and zero walks over his last five games.
May 17, 2023
Shakes of early troubles
Duran went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Tuesday's 9-4 win over Seattle.
ANALYSIS
Duran struck out twice in his first two at-bats then sold out for a sinking hit from Teoscar Hernandez that got behind him to plate the Mariners' first two runs. The Duran of 2021 and 2022 might let those plays fester and impact him the rest of the game, but the 2023 version of the outfielder flushes the adverse outcomes and moves on. The player that slashed a combined .219/.269/.354 the previous two seasons has a line of .351/.406/.585 in 2023.
May 16, 2023
Leadoff a one-day thing
Duran batted leadoff and 1-for-3 with a run scored in Monday's 10-1 loss to the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Duran was moved to leadoff, pushing Alex Verdugo to second, but the move is a one-day thing, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Boston manager Alex Cora decided to drop Verdugo to second, normally the spot for Masataka Yoshida, who was given the night off. Duran has experience hitting atop the order, but Cora is pleased with Verdugo leading off and Duran hitting in the middle of the order. It may have been an attempt to shake the Red Sox out of a slump that, with Monday's result, reached four consecutive losses and six over the last seven games.
May 15, 2023
Moves up to leadoff
Duran is starting in the leadoff spot for the Red Sox on Monday versus the Mariners, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
It's the first start of the season in the leadoff spot for Duran, who has mostly batted fifth this month. The young outfielder has been very productive with the big club but has actually scuffled a bit of late with a .514 OPS in his last seven contests. Normal leadoff hitter Alex Verdugo is batting second.
May 10, 2023
Gets aboard three times
Duran went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, one RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored in Wednesday's 5-2 win over Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
This was Duran's third multi-hit effort through nine games in May, a span in which he's gone 10-for-30 (.333) with four steals and four RBI. The outfielder went just 1-for-11 last weekend against the Phillies, but it appears he's avoided a serious slump. He's slashing .372/.420/.603 with two home runs, 14 RBI, 14 runs scored, 12 doubles and six steals through 88 plate appearances.
May 10, 2023
Nabs fifth steal
Duran went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Tuesday's 9-3 loss to Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old has slowed down a bit at the plate, but he's still batting .296 (8-for-27) through the first eight games in May, albeit with a 2:9 BB:K. Since his mid-April promotion, Duran is slashing .360/.405/.587 with two homers, five steals, 12 runs and 13 RBI in 21 contests, but his .463 BABIP isn't sustainable and his production could deflate quickly if his strikeouts continue to pile up.
May 4, 2023
Steals two bases in win
Duran went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two stolen bases in Thursday's 11-5 win over the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Duran has five multi-hit efforts in his last nine games. He's also up to four steals this season after a 10-game drought on the basepaths. The outfielder has made the most of limited playing time this season, slashing .417/.456/.683 with two home runs, 13 RBI, 11 runs scored and 10 doubles over 68 plate appearances. Duran is seeing a strong-side platoon role in center field with Adam Duvall (wrist) out.
May 2, 2023
Cranks homer in win
Duran batted fifth and went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's 6-5 win over the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Duran singled in the third inning to extend a hit streak to six straight and later homered to tie the game at 3-3. It was his second home run and 11th extra-base hit over 52 at-bats since being promoted from Triple-A Worcester. The lefty-batting Duran hits out of the lower-third of the order against lefties, but a .404/.421/.692 overall line earned him a promotion to fifth against righties.
Apr 26, 2023
Good times continue
Duran went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, four RBI and two additional runs scored in Tuesday's 8-6 win over Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
Duran's first homer of the season was showy -- the first grand slam of his career in the third inning. That gave starter Corey Kluber a comfortable 7-0 cushion. The outfielder has been on fire since being called up from Triple-A Worcester last Monday, hitting .387 (12-for-31) with six extra-base hits, 10 RBI and a 1.062 OPS. Duran's had two previous seasons in the majors but hasn't shown anything close to what he's doing now.
Apr 24, 2023
On base three times
Duran went 2-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base and two runs scored in Sunday's 12-5 win over Milwaukee.
ANALYSIS
Duran began producing his first game up with the Red Sox and hasn't stopped. The 26-year-old outfielder is 9-for-23 with three walks, four doubles, six RBI, two steals and four runs over seven games. He's started against right-handers only, and it's unclear if manager Alex Cora will limit him as such going forward, although that should give Duran plenty of plate appearances while Adam Duvall recovers from a wrist injury (60-day IL).
Apr 22, 2023
Stays hot
Duran went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in Friday's 5-3 win over Milwaukee.
ANALYSIS
Duran trotted home on an Alex Verdugo home run in the third inning then knocked in the game-winning run with an infield single in the sixth inning. He's hit in five straight since being called up from Triple-A Worcester, going 7-for-17 with two walks, four doubles, six RBI, one stolen base and two runs. He told Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic the biggest difference between last season, when he batted .221, is his mental approach. Duran admitted to letting any mistakes, no matter big or small, fester and the pressure compounded on him. A five-game sample size is far too little, but Duran is showing promising signs that 2023 will be a different year.
Apr 19, 2023
Picks up two hits in win
Duran went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Duran began the day with a ground rule double in the second inning and drove in his first run of the year on a fielder's choice in the eighth. The 26-year-old has reached base four times in two games since being called back up to the bigs. He should see his name in the lineup quite often coming up with the Sox currently scheduled to only face one lefty over their next 12 games.

Getting another start in CF
Duran is starting in center field and batting eighth for the Red Sox on Tuesday against the Twins, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
He's now started back-to-back games in center field since being recalled Monday and could be positioned for fairly regularly playing time against righties while Adam Duvall (wrist) is out. Duran has struggled mightily to this point at the big-league level, but there's still some upside here which warrants a roster spot in deeper leagues.
Apr 18, 2023
Makes season debut
Duran went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and a stolen base in Monday's 5-4 loss to the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Duran was called up from Triple-A Worcester and made his season debut, batting ninth and starting in center field. The speedy outfielder is expected to be part of a platoon in center while Adam Duvall (wrist, 60-day IL) is out of commission. The lefty-hitting Duran could be a regular if the bat holds up. That's a big "if" for Duran, who has a .219/.269/.354 slash against MLB pitching.
Apr 17, 2023
Called up, starting Monday
The Red Sox recalled Duran from Triple-A Worcester on Monday. He'll start in center field and bat ninth in the team's Patriots' Day game against the Angels, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Boston sent infielder Bobby Dalbec to Triple-A in a corresponding move, with the addition of Duran giving the Red Sox some added depth in the outfield while Adam Duvall (wrist) is out for an extended period. With the Red Sox recently concluding a stretch of facing four left-handed starting pitchers in four games, the lefty-hitting Duran could have a clearer path to playing time in center field than he would have if he was immediately recalled when Duran was placed on the injured list April 10. Duran and Raimel Tapia will vie for starts in center versus right-handed pitching, while Enrique Hernandez will likely serve as the top option at the position versus southpaws.
Apr 11, 2023
Not promoted yet
Duran was bypassed for a promotion to Boston after the team placed center fielder Adam Duvall (wrist) on the injured list, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Instead of Duran, a natural center fielder, the club opted to bring up Bobby Dalbec, because the Red Sox are projected to face seven left-handed starters in eight games. The righty-hitting Dalbec is a better offensive fit than the lefty-hitting Duran, who could eventually enter the mix following the upcoming stretch against southpaws.
Mar 28, 2023
Optioned to Triple-A
Duran was optioned to Triple-A Worcester by the Red Sox on Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Instead of being a bench option for the Red Sox, Duran will get regular at-bats with Worcester in the International League. The 26-year-old isn't far removed from being considered one of the best prospects in the system, but he has a career clash of .219/.269/.354 in 91 games over 335 plate appearances at the highest level. With Duran down, it appears Raimel Tapia has won a job on the Boston roster to start the 2023 campaign.
Mar 5, 2023
Roster status uncertain
Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters Sunday that the team is not ready to make a decision on where Duran will open the season, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
"Like I told [Duran] yesterday, don't worry about stuff like that," Cora said. We're not going to worry about that right now. We'll figure that out towards the end of the month where we're at." If Duran does make the roster, it's likely as a backup, so the debate is whether to get him regular at-bats in Triple-A with Worcester or be a backup with the Red Sox. While there's still a chance for long-term success, Duran can safely be ignored in redraft leagues regardless of roster status.
Oct 1, 2022
Sent back down
Duran was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Duran was called up by the Red Sox on Friday, and he went 1-for-4 during the series opener in Toronto. However, he'll head back to the minors as part of a move after Kaleb Ort was reinstated from the restricted list.
Sep 30, 2022
Recalled from Triple-A
Duran was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Friday.
ANALYSIS
With Kaleb Ort heading to the restricted list due to his vaccination status ahead of Boston's series in Toronto, Duran will fill the empty roster spot. The 26-year-old outfielder has put up a .715 OPS in Triple-A since being demoted in late August, and he's recorded a hit in four of his last six major-league appearances.
Aug 27, 2022
Sent back to Triple-A
Duran was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Saturday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran had been with the big-league club since mid-June, but his playing time dropped off recently as the Red Sox got healthier. He also struggled to a .158/.258/.263 line over his last 20 games, dropping his OPS on the season down to .648. Despite the demotion, Duran could still return to the majors soon when rosters expand to 28 players at the start of September.
Aug 21, 2022
Starts in RF
Duran started in right field and went 1-for-4 in Saturday's 4-3 win over Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
Duran entered the lineup due to Tommy Pham being sidelined with a back injury. Alex Verdugo shifted from right field to Pham's spot in left, opening up a slot of Duran.
Aug 17, 2022
On bench, time as regular likely up
Duran is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game in Pittsburgh, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
When Boston reinstated Enrique Hernandez and Rob Refsnyder from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Duran was able to stick in the lineup for the Red Sox's 5-3 win over the Pirates, as Hernandez started at shortstop while Refsnyder was on the bench. Refsnyder is likely to make most of his starts versus lefty pitching moving forward, but the lefty-hitting Duran appears set to lose out on everyday duties in center field with Hernandez taking over the position Wednesday as top shortstop Xander Bogaerts (shin) rejoins the lineup. In addition to being a defensive liability, Duran has played his way out of a regular role by slashing .176/.247/.338 with a 30.9 percent strikeout rate since the All-Star break.
Aug 17, 2022
Starter days numbered
Duran will become Boston's fourth outfielder after the team activated Enrique Hernandez from the injured list Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran, who's had a rocky road the last two months as the primary center fielder, will become a spare outfielder instead of being sent down to the minors where he could play every day and develop. He started in center Tuesday while Hernandez gave Xander Bogaerts a break at shortstop.
Aug 8, 2022
Tough day in loss
Duran was dropped to ninth in the batting order and went 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and misplayed a pair of flyballs in Sunday's 13-5 loss to the Royals.
ANALYSIS
The batting order drop was expected, though it wasn't known how far down he would land. Boston manager Alex Cora said Friday that he would be replacing Duran as the leadoff hitter with Tommy Pham, but Duran did not play Saturday. The two flyballs he was unable to corral -- neither was ruled an error -- led to big Kansas City innings. With Enrique Hernandez's return from hip injury grinding on and Rob Refsnyder (knee) on the injured list, Duran is needed to fill the void in center field. He's been slumping for over a month and could lose at-bats to Jaylin Davis.
Aug 7, 2022
Moved from leadoff
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Friday that he plans to replace Duran as the leadoff hitter and drop him in the order, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran was held out of the lineup Saturday when Tommy Pham batted leadoff and Jaylen Davis lined up in center field. The decision to drop Duran appears to be related to a month-long slump that began July 3. Duran is hitting .155 (15-for-97) with a .204 on-base percentage and .472 OPS over the last 26 games.
Aug 6, 2022
Resting Saturday
Duran will be on the bench Saturday against the Royals, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran's off day comes against lefty Daniel Lynch, but he started against two of the previous three southpaws Boston faced, so he isn't necessarily viewed as strictly a platoon player. Jaylin Davis will get the start in center field Saturday.
Aug 2, 2022
Powers offense Monday
Duran went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and three total RBI in Monday's 3-2 win over the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Duran generated both of the Red Sox's run-scoring plays. He hit a ground-rule double to knock in the opening run in the third inning, then skipped the bounce with a two-run homer in the fifth. The outfielder went a month between long balls, and he batted only .184 in July, but he's off to a positive start in August. For the season, he has a .245/.294/.406 slash line with two long balls, 10 RBI, 20 runs scored and seven stolen bases through 153 plate appearances. He's still sitting versus most southpaws, but Duran has taken over the leadoff role against right-handers.
Jul 31, 2022
Idle versus lefty
Duran is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox gave lefty-hitting outfielder Jackie Bradley the day off in Saturday's loss when the Brewers brought lefty Eric Lauer to the hill, but it'll be the lefty-hitting Duran's turn to sit in the series finale while Boston opposes Milwaukee southpaw Aaron Ashby. Jaylin Davis will enter the outfield in Duran's stead and will serve as the Red Sox's leadoff man.
Jul 26, 2022
Takes seat Tuesday
Duran is not in the lineup Tuesday versus Cleveland, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran has been ineffective over his last 10 games, going 6-for-38 with 15 strikeouts and poor defense. Jaylin Davis steps in to play center field for the second game of the series.
Jul 25, 2022
Scores twice in loss
Duran went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two runs scored in Sunday's loss to the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Duran scored on a Xander Bogaerts single in the first inning, then on an Alex Verdugo single in the fifth. The two-hit performance was his fourth multi-hit game this month and his first since July 5. Duran has struggled to get things going this month, with five hits in his last 43 at-bats. He also has 20 strikeouts during that span. The outfielder is batting .191 in July and .250 on the season.
Jul 15, 2022
On bench Friday
Duran isn't in the lineup Friday against the Yankees, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran went 1-for-3 with a run and a stolen base during Thursday's loss to the Rays and will be out of the lineup for the second time in the last three games. Jackie Bradley is shifting to center field while Rob Refsnyder starts in right.
Jul 15, 2022
Swipes seventh bag
Duran went 1-for-3 with a stolen base and a run in a loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Duran again hit leadoff for Boston and scored the game's second run after singling and stealing second base in the sixth inning. The 25-year-old has made an impact on the basepaths -- both for Boston and for fantasy managers -- in his limited time in the majors during the campaign, going 7-for-8 on theft attempts over just 26 games. Among Red Sox players, only Trevor Story (10 steals) has more this season.
Jul 13, 2022
Day off Wednesday
Duran isn't starting Wednesday against the Rays, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran will get a breather after he went 1-for-14 with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base over the last four games. Jackie Bradley is shifting to venter field while Rob Refsnyder starts in right.
Jul 12, 2022
Keeps flashing speed
Duran went 1-for-5 with a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base in Monday's 10-5 loss to the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Boston took advantage of Francisco Mejia being behind the plate for Tampa Bay, going 3-for-3 on steal attempts as a team, and Duran swiped his sixth bag of the year in his 24th game for the Red Sox. The 25-year-old has also added some value with his bat, slashing .277/.327/.436 with a homer, seven RBI and 14 runs while being a fixture in the leadoff spot since his promotion.
Jul 8, 2022
Sitting Friday
Duran is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game versus the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Duran will get a breather after he went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in Thursday's loss to the Yankees. Rob Refsnyder will draw the start in center field and bat leadoff in Friday's contest.
Jul 6, 2022
Steals fifth base
Duran went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a stolen base in an 8-4 loss to the Rays on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Duran has provided a spark to the Red Sox offense since being recalled from Triple-A in June. The rookie center fielder is slashing .329/.388/.521 and has excelled in the leadoff role. His sprint speed is in the 92nd percentile of all MLB players according to Baseball Savant, and Duran now has five steals in only 18 games played so far in 2022.
Jul 3, 2022
Double, steal in loss
Duran went 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Duran tried to spark a rally in the ninth inning, doubling and stealing third base, but he was left aboard. The outfielder has multiple hits in each of his last four games, going 10-for-19 (.526) with a home run and three doubles in that span. He's up to a .344/.394/.557 slash line through 66 plate appearances, and he's seen leadoff duties when available lately. Enrique Hernandez (hip) remains out with no clear timeline to return, so Duran's playing time is likely safe for now, though Rob Refsnyder could pick up some starts against southpaws.
Jul 1, 2022
Leads off game with homer
Duran went 2-for-5 with a homer and a pair of RBI in Friday's 6-5 loss to the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Duran took Adrian Sampson deep with the first pitch of the game for his first homer of the year and the third of his career. He later added an RBI single in the sixth inning. Duran is now hitting .333/.387/.544 with a homer and four steals through 14 games this season.
Jul 1, 2022
Making September trip to Toronto
Duran said he'll be available when the Red Sox travel to Toronto in September, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
The comment implies Duran will be vaccinated by September. It remains possible that the 25-year-old is moved at the trade deadline, but his .327/.386/.500 slash line through 57 plate appearances in 2022 suggests he may be a staple in Boston's lineup for the remainder of the season.
Jun 30, 2022
Reinstated from restricted list
Duran (personal) was reinstated from the restricted list Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Duran was unavailable for Boston's series in Toronto to begin the week since he's unvaccinated, but he'll rejoin the team ahead of its weekend series against the Cubs. The 25-year-old slashed .385/.429/.538 with four doubles, five runs, three RBI and four stolen bases over six games prior to his absence.
Jun 27, 2022
Officially moved to restricted list
The Red Sox placed Duran (personal) on the restricted list Monday.
ANALYSIS
Duran and right-hander Tanner Houck will both skip the Red Sox's three-game series that begins Monday in Toronto since their status as unvaccinated players makes them ineligible to enter Canada. Infielder Yolmer Sanchez was called up from Triple-A Worcester to replace Duran on the roster for the Toronto series, but Rob Refsnyder and Christian Arroyo will be the main candidates to pick up starts in the outfield while Duran is unavailable. Duran will link back up with the Red Sox when the team begins a three-game series in Chicago with the Cubs on Friday.
Jun 27, 2022
Set to miss Toronto series
The Red Sox are expected to place Duran on the restricted list prior to Monday's series opener in Toronto, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
As Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican first reported last week, Duran acknowledged that he is unvaccinated COVID-19, therefore making him ineligible to cross the Canadian border for the Red Sox's three-game series with the Blue Jays. Boston is expected to formally call up another player to replace Duran on the 26-man active roster, but Rob Refsnyder and Jackie Bradley will be the main candidates to pick up starts in center field over the next three days while Duran is unavailable. Duran will be ready to go for Friday's series opener in Chicago against the Cubs, but his time as an everyday player could end as soon as Enrique Hernandez (hip) is deemed ready to return from the 10-day injured list.
Jun 26, 2022
Posts four hits, two steals in win
Duran went 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two stolen bases Saturday in a 4-2 victory versus Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Duran recorded his first four-hit game as a major-leaguer -- in fact, he hadn't notched more than two hits in any contest prior to Saturday -- and he stole a pair of bags in a contest for the second time this season. The rookie also gave Boston an important insurance run in the ninth inning with his run-scoring single. Duran has been impressive in 12 games in the big-leagues thus far, posting a .319/.373/.489 slash line with eight runs, three RBI and four stolen bases.
Jun 22, 2022
Ineligible for upcoming series
Duran told reporters Wednesday that he's unvaccinated, meaning he won't be eligible to play in Boston's upcoming three-game series in Toronto that begins Monday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
When Duran was first promoted from Triple-A Worcester on July 15, he looked as though he might be in line for only a brief run with the big club while Enrique Hernandez (hip) appeared headed for a minimal stay on the 10-day injured list, but Hernandez recently hit a snag in his recovery and is unlikely to be available for the Toronto series. As a result, Duran's upcoming absence looms larger than initially anticipated, as the Red Sox will now be down their top two center fielders in Toronto. Jackie Bradley or Rob Refsnyder should be in line to see most of the work in center field to begin next week.
Jun 20, 2022
Swipes two bags
Duran went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and two stolen bases in Monday's 5-2 win over Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Leading off for Boston, Duran walked, stole second and scored a run in the first inning. He later doubled and scored in the third followed by another base hit and a steal in the fourth. The 25-year-old outfielder has three multi-hit performances over his last seven games, raising his season slash line to .310/.394/.517 with four extra-base hits and six runs scored through 33 plate appearances.
Jun 19, 2022
Steps out of lineup
Duran is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran started all four games in center field since being promoted from Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, and he'll head to the bench after going 3-for-13 with a triple, a double, two walks and two runs. Jackie Bradley will man center field while Rob Refsnyder (undisclosed) starts in right.
Jun 16, 2022
Starts Wednesday
Duran started in center field and went 0-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in Wednesday's 10-1 win over Oakland.
ANALYSIS
Duran was added to Boston's roster after Christian Arroyo was placed on the COVID-19 injured list. Rob Refsnyder (undisclosed), who had started the previous two games in center, was banged up following Tuesday's game. With Enrique Hernandez (hip) possibly nearing a return when eligible Saturday, playing time for both Duran and Refsnyder will dry up, and presumably one will be sent back to the minors.
Jun 15, 2022
Call-up confirmed
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said during his appearance on SportsRadio 93.7 WEEI-FM's "Merloni, Fauria, & Mego" program that Duran will be called up from Triple-A Worcester and will serve as Boston's leadoff hitter in Wednesday's game against the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
To open up a spot on the active roster for Duran, Boston will place Christian Arroyo (illness) on the COVID-19-related injured list after Cora confirmed that Arroyo tested positive for the virus. Arroyo had been serving as a short-side platoon player in the outfield of late, but the lefty-hitting Duran could get the chance to play regularly versus right-handed pitching while he's up with the Red Sox. While Enrique Hernandez (hip) is on the injured list, either Duran or fellow lefty hitter Jackie Bradley should make regular starts in center field versus righties, with the other occupying a corner-outfield spot in those matchups.
Jun 15, 2022
Promotion imminent
Duran is expected to be called up from Triple-A Worcester ahead of Wednesday's game agains the Athletics with Christian Arroyo (illness) likely to land on the COVID-19-related injured list, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox haven't explicitly said that Arroyo's late scratch from the lineup prior to Tuesday's 6-1 win was the result of a positive test for the virus, but the 27-year-old looks like he'll be deactivated for a few days in any case. Arroyo had been serving as a short-side platoon partner in right field with Jackie Bradley, but the lefty-hitting Duran won't be an option in that capacity. Even so, Duran could still find himself as a lineup regular against right-handed pitching, as Bradley could slide over to center field as a replacement for Enrique Hernandez (hip), who is on the injured list. In that scenario, Rob Refsnyder would take over Arroyo's role as the top right-handed-hitting outfielder on the bench.
Jun 6, 2022
Returns to minors
Duran was optioned to Triple-A Worcester following Sunday's game against Oakland.
ANALYSIS
Duran appeared in two games during his latest stint with the big club, collecting three hits (all singles) in nine at-bats while scoring once. Jackie Bradley returned to the big-league roster from the paternity list in a corresponding move.
Jun 6, 2022
Shows off speed in win
Duran went 1-for-4 with a run scored in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Duran opened the game with a single and was on second base when Rafael Devers singled to left field. He turned on the jets to beat the throw by Chad Pinder, who fielded the ball before Duran reached third base. "And it was a good throw. Just a different gear. .. We talk about tools, right? You want to hit for power or whatever. Speed is something you cannot teach. And the instincts, too. It was a great read. And he's so fast he puts pressure on the opposition," Cora told Christopher Smith of MassLive.com. Duran was called up from the taxi squad over the weekend when Jackie Bradley was placed on paternity leave. He's expected to return at some point during Boston's four-game set in Anaheim, so Duran's current stint with the Red Sox is expected to end.
Jun 5, 2022
Raps two hits in win
Duran started in right field and went 2-for-5 as the leadoff hitter in Saturday's 8-0 win over Oakland.
ANALYSIS
Duran had two of the six hardest-hit balls of the game -- leading off the first inning with a 106 mph lineout and a fifth-inning single measured at 106.9 mph. He's up with the team while Jackie Bradley is out on paternity leave. The lefty-swinging Duran is expected to replace Bradley in right field against right-handers, which Boston will face Sunday. Bradley is expected to return at some point during Boston's series against the Angels that begins Monday.
Jun 4, 2022
Likely to see action
Duran will likely play in games Saturday and Sunday, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran was called up from the taxi squad Friday after Boston placed Jackie Bradley on paternity leave. With the Athletics scheduled to throw two right-handers this weekend, manager Alex Cora said the lefty-swinging Duran would see action in both games.
Jun 3, 2022
Activated for Oakland series
Duran was activated from the taxi squad prior to Friday's game against the Athletics but he is not in the lineup, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
It may just be a weekend stay with the big club for Duran, as he takes the place of Jackie Bradley, who is on paternity leave. Franchy Cordero is starting in right field Friday, but Duran could appear off the bench.
Jun 3, 2022
On taxi squad
Duran is on the taxi squad for this weekend's series in Oakland and it's unclear if he will be activated, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran would presumably be activated this weekend if another hitter landed the injured list, as he will be with the team. He is hitting .263/.340/.453 with two home runs, four steals, 29 strikeouts and 10 walks in 22 games since being sent back to the minors May 7.
May 7, 2022
Sent back down
Duran was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Duran was called up by the Red Sox on Friday, and he went 1-for-4 with a triple, a run and a strikeout in Boston's loss to the White Sox. However, the 25-year-old will now head back to the minors after Enrique Hernandez (illness) was reinstated from the COVID-19 IL. Duran slashed .379/.463/.621 with two homers, two triples, four doubles, 15 runs, 11 RBI and seven stolen bases in his first 15 Triple-A appearances this year, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him back in the majors at some point if the Red Sox deal with injuries or need an offensive spark.
May 7, 2022
Triples in debut
Duran started in the center field for Enrique Hernandez (illness) and went 1-for-4 with a triple as Boston's leadoff hitter in Friday's 4-2 loss to the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Duran was called up from Triple-A Worcester, after the club placed Hernandez on the COVID-19 injury list, though he has not tested positive. It's uncertain if Duran will remain with the team once Hernandez is ready, but Boston's timid bats were once again held quiet Friday, so there could be a need of a shakeup.
May 6, 2022
Leading off in return to majors
Duran was recalled by the Red Sox on Friday and will leadoff and play center field in his season debut against the White Sox, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran's major-league debut last season went quite poorly, as he posted a .215/.241/.336 slash line in 116 plate appearances. His plate discipline couldn't have been much worse, as he combined a 35.7 percent strikeout rate with a 3.6 percent walk rate. His numbers in 15 games for Triple-A Worcester this year are quite encouraging, however, as he's hit .397/.478/.638 with nine walks and 13 strikeouts in 15 games. He'll start in center ahead of Enrique Hernandez (illness) and could get the chance to carve out a regular role if he shows more of his prospect pedigree this time around.
May 6, 2022
Receiving callup Friday
Duran is traveling to Boston on Friday and is expected to be added to the active roster, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old struggled in his first taste of the majors last year with a .215/.241/.336 slash line and 35.7 percent strikeout rate in 112 plate appearances, but he'll receive another opportunity early in 2022. Duran has enjoyed a hot start to the season with Triple-A Worcester and has a 1.084 OPS through 15 games. All three of the Red Sox's starting outfielders -- Enrique Hernandez, Alex Verdugo and Jackie Bradley -- have scuffled offensively this year, and Hernandez is also currently battling an illness. Duran should be able to stick around the big leagues this time around with a better performance.
Apr 30, 2022
Big night at Triple-A
Duran is hitting .357/.449/.524 with one home run, seven steals on eight attempts and an 11:7 K:BB in 11 games with Triple-A Worcester.
ANALYSIS
His best game of the year was a 4-for-5 performance Friday against Buffalo that included his first long ball of the campaign and a steal. Duran turns 26 in September, so it's hard to fully buy into him being ready for big-league pitching based on anything he does at Triple-A. If he continues to keep his strikeout rate around 20 percent (currently 22.4 percent), he will likely get another look in the majors in the coming weeks/months.
Apr 17, 2022
Back from injured list
Duran (illness) was activated from the COVID-19 injured list at Triple-A Worcester and is expected to play Sunday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran has been sidelined since April 6 after testing positive for COVID-19, but he's set to rejoin the lineup for Worcester on Sunday. The 25-year-old had a hot start in the first two games of the season, going 3-for-8 with a double, two walks, an RBI, a run and a stolen base.
Apr 9, 2022
Sidelined by COVID-19
Duran has been out of the lineup for Triple-A Worcester after testing positive for COVID-19, Joe McDonald of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran appeared in a pair of games, going 3-for-8 with a steal, but he'll now miss at least a handful of games. Once he returns, he'll have to keep proving his readiness at the Triple-A level for now, as the Red Sox don't appear to have a roster spot available for him.
Mar 27, 2022
Optioned to minors
Duran was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran made his big-league debut in 2021 but won't be on Boston's roster for Opening Day. The 25-year-old had an .873 OPS in 60 games for Worcester last season but struggled in his first taste of the majors with a .215/.241/.336 slash line and 35.7 percent strikeout rate. Duran figures to rejoin the big club at some point this year, but it may take an injury to Alex Verdugo, Enrique Hernandez or Jackie Bradley.
Mar 17, 2022
Flashes speed Thursday
Duran went 1-for-3 with an infield single while batting leadoff for Boston in Thursday's spring training opener against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Duran showed bunt on the first pitch of the game (he took it) before legging out an infield single on the next pitch. Speed should be an asset Duran offers to any fantasy team; he had 86 steals over 259 minor-league games. He may not lead off -- Enrique Hernandez should fill that role against both lefties and righties -- Duran is looking to put last season's introduction behind him. After belting 16 home runs in 244 at-bats at Triple-A Worcester, his arrival to Boston was greatly anticipated. The 25-year-old slashed .215/.241/.336 with two homers, 10 RBIs and just two stolen bases in 33 games. It's not yet clear where Duran fits into the outfield mix with Alex Verdugo, Hernandez and Jackie Bradley the presumptive starters, left to right. However, Duran could force his way back into the equation.

Not on ALDS roster
Duran isn't on the roster for the ALDS, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran didn't appear in Tuesday's AL Wild Card Game, and he won't be available for the team's series against Tampa Bay. J.D. Martinez (ankle) is active for the series, while Danny Santana (illness) will serve as utility depth.
Oct 5, 2021
Joins wild-card roster
Duran was added to the Red Sox's wild-card roster, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran failed to impress in his first taste of the big leagues this season, struggling to a .215/.241/.336 line while striking out at a 35.7 percent clip across 112 plate appearances. He hit the COVID-19 injured list in early September and was sent to the minors once he got healthy, but he'll be part of the team for the most important game of the season so far. The absence of J.D. Martinez (ankle) opens up a potential start in the outfield, but Duran was poor enough in his initial audition that he's likely to be limited to a role as a pinch runner or defensive replacement.
Sep 23, 2021
Reinstated, sent down
Duran (illness) was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list and optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Duran tested positive for COVID-19 in early September but spent the last week in Worcester on a rehab assignment. He went 3-for-13 with a double, a run and an RBI across four rehab appearances, and he'll remain with the minor-league club now that he's back to full health.
Sep 16, 2021
Begins rehab assignment
Duran (illness) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran has been out since testing positive for COVID-19 in early September. Given that he's merely missed two weeks, he shouldn't require too long of a rehab assignment, though the Red Sox haven't specified exactly when he's expected to return.
Sep 14, 2021
Nearing rehab stint
Duran (illness) is working out with Triple-A Worcester and should begin a rehab assignment within the next couple days, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran has been on the COVID-19 IL since Sept. 3 when he tested positive for the virus, and he'll play some games in the minors to be back up to speed before rejoining the Red Sox. The 25-year-old should only require a few rehab games with Worcester, so he could be activated form the IL within the next week.
Sep 3, 2021
Tests positive for COVID-19
Duran has tested positive for COVID-19, Steve Hewitt of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Friday, and he'll face a fairly lengthy absence following his positive test result. Alex Verdugo should continue to serve as the primary center fielder while the 24-year-old is sidelined, but the Red Sox have limited depth amid their current COVID-19 outbreak.
Sep 3, 2021
Lands on COVID-19 IL
Duran (illness) was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Friday, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal
ANALYSIS
Duran was scratched from Friday's lineup due to an illness, but it's not yet clear whether he's tested positive for the virus. He'll be able to rejoin the Red Sox once he clears the league's health and safety protocols, while Connor Wong was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Friday.
Sep 3, 2021
Scratched Friday with illness
Duran was scratched from Friday's lineup against Cleveland with an illness, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
He will undergo further testing away from the ballpark to make sure it's not COVID-19. Bobby Dalbec enters the lineup at first base while Kyle Schwarber shifts to the outfield.
Aug 29, 2021
Collects second steal
Duran went 1-for-3 with an RBI, a walk and a stolen base in Sunday's 7-5 loss to Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old showed a good eye at the plate with a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning to force in Boston's third run. Duran has gone just 3-for-14 in his last four games, adding one RBI and five runs in that span. He's slashing .220/.248/.350 with two home runs, nine RBI, 17 runs scored and two stolen bases across 105 plate appearances this season.
Aug 29, 2021
Playing regularly sans Renfroe
Duran will start in center field and bat eighth Sunday against Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Since returning from Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, Duran has picked up four consecutive starts in the outfield. He went 2-for-11 with five runs in the first of those three contests, and Duran should continue to play regularly versus right-handed pitchers until Hunter Renfroe (personal) returns from the bereavement list.
Aug 26, 2021
Brought back from minors
The Red Sox recalled Duran from Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
With Hunter Renfroe (personal) landing on the bereavement list, Duran will return to Boston after a two-day stint in the minors. Though Duran was optioned to Worcester after seeing his playing time tail off in recent weeks, he could be in store for an everyday role in the outfield against right-handed pitching while Renfroe is away for anywhere from 3-to-7 days. According to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe, Duran will start in center field in Thursday's series finale with the Twins.
Aug 24, 2021
Optioned to Triple-A
Duran was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran debuted at the start of the second half and came with plenty of hype, as a swing change in the minors had added power to a profile which already included contact and speed and the ability to play center field. He didn't wind up showing any of those skills over his 27-game debut, hitting .221/.236/.372 with two homers and a single steal while striking out in 37.1 percent of his plate appearances. A bad 27-game sample doesn't come close to indicating Duran doesn't have what it takes to succeed long-term, but those numbers simply aren't good enough for a team in the playoff hunt, so Duran will head to the minors for regular at-bats while the Red Sox turn to proven options in the outfield.
Aug 23, 2021
Idle versus lefty
Duran is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rangers, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
As per usual, the lefty-hitting Duran will take a seat with the opposition bringing a southpaw (Kolby Allard) to the mound. Boston will roll out an outfield of Kyle Schwarber, Alex Verdugo and Hunter Renfroe from left to right.
Aug 18, 2021
Out versus lefty
Duran is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Yankees, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With lefty Andrew Heaney on the mound for the Yankees in the series finale, the lefty-hitting Duran will hit the bench for the third time in four games. The rookie is soon expected to see his opportunities to play regularly versus right-handed pitching take a hit once the Red Sox are comfortable deploying the newly activated Kyle Schwarber in the outfield.
Aug 17, 2021
Sits versus lefty
Duran is out of the lineup for the first game of Monday's doubleheader versus the Yankees, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
The lefty-hitting Duran will be on the bench for the front end of the twin bill with southpaw Jordan Montgomery on the hill. Though Duran has typically started versus right-handed pitching since his July 15 promotion from the minors, his opportunities could dwindle with Kyle Schwarber nearing a return to outfield work after being limited to designated-hitter duties in his first three starts since returning from the injured list. Unless Boston decides to deploy Schwarber at first base on an everyday basis, he and J.D. Martinez could rotate between DH and a corner-outfield spot, while Hunter Renfroe and Alex Verdugo start at the other two outfield spots versus right-handed pitching.
Aug 15, 2021
Out of Sunday's lineup
Duran is not in the lineup Sunday against the Orioles, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran started the past six games after spending a couple days on the COVID-19 list, and he'll take a seat Sunday with lefty Keegan Akin pitching for Baltimore. Kyle Schwarber returned from the injured list Friday and is being eased in at designated hitter, which could have an impact on Duran's playing time for the immediate future Schwarber is eventually expected to receive a look at first base, but he'll serve as the designated hitter Sunday while J.D. Martinez, Alex Verdugo and Hunter Renfroe start from left to right in the outfield.
Aug 14, 2021
Delivers two in rout
Duran went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in Friday's 8-1 win over Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
Duran was part of Boston's four-run second inning when he singled home one runner, then doubled home another an inning later. The rookie has picked it up at plate recently, going 10-for-34 (.294) with a home run and three RBI over the last eight games, but Duran's also struck out 13 times (38.2 K%) during that run.
Aug 8, 2021
Good to go Sunday
Duran (undisclosed) was activated from the COVID-19 injured list and will start in left field Sunday at Toronto, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran was placed on the specialized injured list Friday while exhibiting COVID-like symptoms, but he'll quickly rejoin the team since he tested negative for the virus. The 24-year-old will receive a rare start against a left-handed pitcher (Hyun-Jin Ryu) since Alex Verdugo was placed on the paternity list.
Aug 6, 2021
Lands on COVID IL
Duran (undisclosed) was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Friday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
According to Bill Koch of The Providence Journal, Duran has exhibited COVID-like symptoms but is awaiting his test results. If he tests negative he should be able to rejoin the team during this weekend's series against the Blue Jays, assuming he's not feeling too under the weather. Jonathan Arauz was recalled from Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move.
Aug 6, 2021
Remains on bench Friday
Duran is not in the lineup Friday against the Blue Jays, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran was held out of Thursday's starting nine versus a left-handed starter, and he remains on the bench Friday despite the fact righty Alex Manoah is pitching for Toronto. The rookie outfielder is slashing .176/.204/.353 with a 38.9 percent strikeout rate through his first 17 big-league contests. Enrique Hernandez will move to center field while Marwin Gonzalez starts at the keystone.
Aug 5, 2021
Sitting Thursday against lefty
Duran is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Tigers, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
The rookie hit his second home run Wednesday night, but he's still hitting just .180 through 16 games and has had consistently poor timing at the plate since his call-up. Enrique Hernandez is playing center field for the series finale, with Marwin Gonzalez starting at second base.
Aug 1, 2021
Sits with another lefty on hill
Duran is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
With Boston facing a lefty starting pitcher (Shane McClanahan) for the sixth consecutive game, the lefty-hitting Duran has lost out on playing time of late. He'll sit for the third time during that stretch while manager Alex Cora rolls out an outfield of J.D. Martinez, Alex Verdugo and Hunter Renfroe.
Jul 31, 2021
Takes seat Saturday
Duran is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Rays, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Alex Cora has expressed a desire to limit Duran's exposure to left-handed pitching, so he sits with Ryan Yarbrough on the mound for Tampa Bay. The rookie started Friday, but he went 1-for-4 with three strikeouts and was noticeably uncomfortable against southpaw Josh Fleming. Enrique Hernandez is playing center field and batting leadoff Saturday.
Jul 28, 2021
Sits against southpaw
Duran isn't starting the first game of Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran was slated to sit for Tuesday's contest before it was postponed, and he'll be out of the lineup with left-hander Robbie Ray starting for Toronto in Wednesday's matinee. Alex Verdugo will shift to center field while J.D. Martinez starts in left.
Jul 27, 2021
Out against lefty
Duran is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
With a lefty (Robbie Ray) on the mound for Toronto, the Red Sox will stock up on extra right-handed bats, leaving no room in the lineup for Duran. Kevin Plawecki will serve as Boston's designated hitter while J.D. Martinez occupies Duran's usual spot in the outfield.
Jul 22, 2021
Remains out of lineup
Duran isn't starting Thursday's game against the Yankees, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran sat out Wednesday's win over the Blue Jays with left-hander Robbie Ray on the mound for Toronto, and he'll remain on the bench with southpaw Jordan Montgomery starting for the Yankees on Thursday. Enrique Hernandez will shift to center field while Michael Chavis starts at second base.
Jul 21, 2021
Not starting Wednesday
Duran isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran had started each of the last three games, and he blasted his first major-league home run in Monday's win over the Blue Jays. He'll get a breather in Wednesday's series finale as Enrique Hernandez starts in center field while Michael Chavis takes over at second base.
Jul 20, 2021
Slugs first MLB homer
Duran went 1-for-6 with a two-run home run in Monday's 13-4 win over the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Duran got Boston's night started early with a first-inning home run, the rookie's first in the majors and the first of six clubbed by the team. He was moved up to second in the order, a spot that has been Alex Verdugo's for much of the season, after manager Alex Cora decided during Sunday's loss to the Yankees to tweak the lineup, per Jordan Horrobin of MLB.com. "We haven't been great offensively since we went to Oakland," the Red Sox manager explained. "And I just felt like moving people around would probably relax a few guys." It's a good bet Cora will keep the same lineup Tuesday.
Jul 19, 2021
Batting second Monday
Duran is starting in center field and batting second in Monday's game against the Blue Jays, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Alex Cora placed Duran in the bottom third of the order in each of his first two starts to take some pressure off the outfielder early in his major-league career. He went 1-for-6 with a run, a walk and three strikeouts but will move up in the order while Alex Verdugo will bat sixth Monday. It's not yet clear whether the change will remain in effect following Monday's series opener.
Jul 18, 2021
Singles in debut
Duran went 1-for-2 with a walk in Saturday's rain-shortened 3-1 loss to the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Duran made his MLB debut and singled off Gerrit Cole in his first at-bat. Thus far, Duran has been the starting center fielder against right-handers, although Thursday's game was postponed. If that holds course, Duran should be in the lineup Sunday against righty Jameson Taillon.
Jul 17, 2021
Debut coming Saturday
Duran will make his MLB debut Saturday against the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Duran was called up after the All-Star break and was scheduled to start Thursday before that game was postponed due to COVID-19 reasons. He was held out Friday when a left-hander was throwing, but his debut will happen Saturday against right-hander Gerrit Cole.
Jul 16, 2021
Coming off bench Friday
Duran is not in the lineup Friday against the Yankees, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old was poised to start in his major-league debut Thursday, but the contest was postponed due to New York's COVID-19 issues. Duran will remain on the bench Friday with left-hander Jordan Montgomery pitching, so the young outfielder will need to wait until later in the weekend for his first big-league start.
Jul 15, 2021
Starting in major-league debut
Duran is starting Thursday's game against the Yankees, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran will make his big-league debut Thursday while playing center field and batting seventh. Manager Alex Cora said that he plans to use the 24-year-old in the bottom third of the lineup for now to take some pressure off the star prospect, while Enrique Hernandez will likely remain in the leadoff spot. Duran slashed .270/.365/.561 with 15 homers, 37 runs, 32 RBI and 12 stolen bases in 46 games at Triple-A Worcester this year.
Jul 14, 2021
Thursday call-up expected
Duran is not in the lineup Wednesday for Triple-A Worcester and is will be joining the Red Sox in New York, Joe McDonald of the Worcester Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
No transaction has been made yet, but all signs point to Duran making his big-league debut at some point during the 4-game weekend series against the Yankees. The outfielder has hit .270 with 15 home runs and 32 RBI in 46 games with Triple-A Worcester this year. He's also swiped 12 bags, which is certainly intriguing to a Red Sox club that ranks 21st in baseball with 31 stolen bases in 2021.
Jul 9, 2021
Nursing sore back
Duran was scratched from Triple-A Worcester's lineup Friday with lower back soreness, Andersen Pickard of MLBDailyDish.com reports.
ANALYSIS
There's been no indication of an injury to the outfield prospect. Most likely, the Red Sox organization is just being precautious with Duran, whom they are expected to call up at some point this season.
Jul 3, 2021
Left off Olympic roster for reason
Duran was not selected for the Team USA roster at the Olympics, because the Red Sox felt they may need to call him up while he was in Tokyo for the games, Joe MacDonald of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran was a key piece for Team USA in the qualifying tournament, so it was surprising to see his name omitted from the final roster. The Red Sox did not have an issue with Duran participating in Olympics, but they told Team USA manager Mike Scioscia that if Boston needed to call up Duran during the games, they would pull him back from Japan. That sounds like the Red Sox intend to call him up before the end of the Olympic games, which are scheduled to wrap Aug. 7. Duran has a .971 OPS with 15 home runs in 39 games for Triple-A Worcester.
Jun 8, 2021
Staying in Triple-A for now
The Red Sox have no plans to rush Duran to the majors, Chris Mason of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran, who is coming off a successful tournament for Team USA, has a .991 OPS for Triple-A Worcester and was recently bumped up to No. 29 on Baseball America's Top 100 prospects list. That has fueled speculation that he could be added to the major league roster, particularly as manager Alex Cora tries to find a leadoff hitter after Enrique Hernandez was dropped in the order. "Obviously the conversations will always be there," Cora told Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald. "He just had a great tournament down there in Florida. This is a guy that's going to impact this team in the future, and the future doesn't mean tomorrow or a month, maybe next year or two years." Duran is headed back to the WooSox following the tournament and will continue to work on the things he needs to, per Cora.
May 15, 2021
Unloads monster blast Thursday
Duran launched his fourth home run for Triple-A Worcester in Thursday's win over Syracuse.
ANALYSIS
Duran turned on a 95-mph fastball, sending it 440 feet at an exit velocity of 112 mph. He's making early noise at Triple-A, but the Red Sox aren't going to rush the prospect and feel there are areas of improvement, per Ian Browne of MLB.com. "Catching up with fastballs is very important, catching up with fastballs up in the zone is very important. Being disciplined with breaking balls down in the zone is important," manager Alex Cora said. Duran added that he still has work to do on inner-half fastballs, but the swing he put on the inside heater Thursday is evidence he's coming around in that area.
May 12, 2021
Launches two homers
Duran went 2-for-5 with two home runs and a third RBI for Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Duran is cooking for the WooSox after going hitless with six strikeouts in his first 11 at-bats. Over the last four games, Duran is 8-for-17 with three homers and four RBI.
May 5, 2021
Opens at Triple-A
Duran started in center field, batted leadoff and went 0-for-4 for Triple-A Worcester's season-opener on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox want to see how close Duran is to the majors and will give him an extended run of at-bats for the WooSox, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com. It's been a while since Duran played affiliated ball, and general manager Chaim Bloom is interested to see how the prospect tests a new swing and approach against Triple-A competition. "We want to make sure we don't try to learn too much from a really small sample, but just having him go through the ups and downs of the season and playing every day and doing it with the various ways that we have to track his performance," said Bloom. Duran is primarily a center fielder but was exposed to corner outfield in spring training and the alternate site. It doesn't take much to see the struggles of Franchy Cordero, who still has minor-league options, to find a potential landing spot for Duran later this season.
Apr 28, 2021
Exposed to all outfield spots
Duran has played left field and right field during simulated games at the Red Sox's alternate camp, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Duran was moved from second base to center field in 2018 and played the position in 2019 and 2020. Now, it appears the Red Sox are exposing him to corner outfield in case those positions present a path to the majors. Looking at the major-league roster, both Franchy Cordero (.196, 9-for-46, 24 strikeouts) and Hunter Renfroe (.189, 10-for-53, .545 OPS) may have prompted the organization to consider Duran for a possible promotion later in 2021. Cordero still has minor-league options and could be sent down, if he doesn't turn it around at the dish.
Mar 17, 2021
Reassigned to minor-league camp
Duran was reassigned to minor-league camp Wednesday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Durran had a hot start to spring training but cooled off slightly in recent Grapefruit League appearances. He went just 2-for-12 with a triple, one run, one walk and seven strikeouts over his past 10 spring games and will now head to minor-league camp ahead of the regular season.
Mar 5, 2021
Lofts second spring HR
Duran went 2-for-3 with a double, a solo home run, and two runs scored in Thursday's spring game against the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
All four of Duran's spring hits have been for extra bases, including two homers. Duran is Boston's center fielder of the future -- Jackie Bradley's signing with Milwaukee cemented that projection -- but manager Alex Cora feels he still needs development work, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. The manage cited a moment during Thursday's game when Duran threw to the wrong base. "Those are the things that are part of the equation. It's good that he makes a mistake like that so we can correct it," Cora said. "He makes a nice play going to his right, made that bad decision." Duran is 4-for-8 with a walk and three RBI in five spring appearances.
Feb 9, 2021
Receives camp invite
Duran received an invitation to the Red Sox's major-league spring training, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old spent 2020 at Boston's alternate training site and will join the big-league club for spring training. Duran spent most of 2019 at Double-A and had a .250/.309/.325 slash line in 352 plate appearances, so there's a chance he's able to make his MLB debut in 2021.
