Naylor is 1-for-10 with three strikeouts in four appearances. Manny Machado will be the DH while Greg Garcia starts at third base Sunday.

Naylor is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Giants.

The lefty-hitting Naylor was on the bench for the first two games of the series while Arizona brought southpaws to the hill, but his absence from the lineup in the series finale is more significant with the Diamondbacks starting a right-hander (Luke Weaver). At this stage, Naylor may not be locked in as a strong-side platoon player for the Padres, which could make it difficult to justify rostering him outside of NL-only leagues.

Naylor is getting his first start of the season as the designated hitter Sunday against the Diamondbacks. He is batting ninth.

Naylor did not see any action in the first two games but will get the nod against righty Zac Gallen. The Padres faced southpaws in the first two games of the series, so Naylor may be the primary DH against righties.

Naylor is on the bubble in terms of claiming a spot on the Padres' 30-man roster, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Naylor has been mentioned as a prime candidate to serve as San Diego's designated hitter this season, but the Padres must still decide if his potential offensive contributions are enough to offset his mediocre defense. Ultimately, Naylor's opportunity to make the roster may depend on how many pitchers the Padres choose to carry.

Naylor is the "most obvious DH candidate" if a universal designated hitter is instituted for the 2020 season, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.

Under MLB's current proposal, teams in both leagues would use a designated hitter during an abbreviated 2020 season. Naylor makes sense to fill the role regularly for San Diego given his raw power and subpar defense. Still, Lin notes that the Padres could cycle through a number of players to DH in order to preserve energy and health, so Naylor is far from guaranteed an everyday role.

We thought it was best (to) give it another day or two," according to manager Jayce Tingler. Naylor is fighting for an Opening Day roster slot but isn't projected to start in either outfield corner.
