Takes tough-luck loss
Gray (8-13) took the loss Tuesday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over six innings against the Orioles. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old's only blemish occurred on his seventh pitch when Gunnar Henderson launched a leadoff solo home run. However, Gray didn't receive any run support and was saddled with the loss in what was likely to be his final start of the 2023 campaign. Over his last three outings, the righty has impressed with a 2.08 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 21:5 K:BB across 17.1 innings, but has a 1-2 record to show for it. In fact, Tuesday marked the seventh time this year that Gray came away with a loss or no-decision despite tossing five-plus innings while surrendering less than two earned runs. He'll close out his third big-league season with an 8-13 record, 3.91 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 143:80 K:BB across 159 innings in 30 starts.

Earns eighth win
Gray (8-12) earned the win Wednesday, allowing one run on five hits and three walks over five innings against the White Sox. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Gray allowed just one run on the afternoon despite allowing the leadoff man to reach in three of the five innings he pitched. The right-hander was also gifted with plenty of run support early, helping him cruise to his eighth win of the season and his first since July 22. Gray came into the game having lost each of his last four decisions (spanning seven starts) but he's now allowed three runs or fewer in three consecutive outings.

Season-high 10 strikeouts in loss
Gray (7-12) took the loss Thursday, allowing two runs on five hits and over 6.1 innings against the Pirates. He struck out 10 and did not walk a batter.
ANALYSIS
Gray struck out six of the first 10 batters he faced but was victimized twice by the long ball over his 6.1 innings of work, leading to him taking his 12th loss. It was just the second time in his last seven starts that he made it through six frames while the 10 strikeouts marked his season high. However, the right-hander has now lost his last four decisions and six of his last seven overall (spanning 11 starts).

Returning to rotation Thursday
Gray is scheduled to return to the Washington rotation for a start Thursday against the Pirates at PNC Park.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander will return to the mound for the first time since Sept. 3 after he found himself as the odd man out of the Nationals' six-man rotation last week, when Washington played five games in a seven-day stretch. Rather than making Gray available out of the bullpen, the Nationals used the pair of off days last week to give the 25-year-old right-hander an extended breather after he had gone 0-3 with a 8.49 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 20:21 K:BB in 23.1 innings over his last six starts. Gray isn't believed to be nursing an injury and should be in store for a normal workload in his return to the rotation Thursday.

Goes four innings vs. Miami
Gray did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks over four innings against the Marlins. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Gray's struggles continued early Sunday as he allowed three runs in the opening inning, including two on a pair of bases-loaded walks. While the 25-year-old Gray would ultimately blank the Marlins over his final three innings, his ERA is now up to 8.49 over his last five starts. Overall, he's 7-11 with a 4.13 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 122:75 K:BB across 27 starts (141.2 innings) this season. Gray's currently in line to face Pittsburgh in his next outing, though the Nats could elect to give him some extra rest between starts.

Will stay on turn Sunday
Nationals manager Dave Martinez confirmed Thursday that Gray will start Sunday's series finale against the Marlins, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Gray yielded four earned runs over just two innings (63 pitches) in his last rotation turn Monday against the Blue Jays, but Martinez said the 25-year-old looked sharp in his between-starts bullpen session Thursday afternoon in Washington. He'll stay on turn for now, though Gray might get a bit of extra rest at certain points down the stretch.
Aug 30, 2023
On track to start Sunday for now
Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Wednesday that Gray is still currently scheduled to start Sunday versus the Marlins, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
It's possible Gray could be pushed back, though, depending on how he looks in his between-starts bullpen session. If that happens, the Nationals would go with a bullpen game Sunday. Gray went just two innings in his last start against the Blue Jays and has posted an 8.84 ERA and 18:17 K:BB across 19.1 frames in August. He'll already be on extra rest if he starts Sunday as part of the Nats' six-man rotation, but some additional time off might be in the offing.

Short night in Toronto
Gray (7-11) took the loss Monday, allowing four runs on four hits and four walks over two innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
After working out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning, Gray gave up four runs on three hits and two walks in the second. He'd ultimately need 63 pitches to record just six outs in the loss. It's been a tough stretch for Gray, who's struggled to an 8.84 ERA over his last five outings (19.1 innings). Overall, his ERA is up to 4.05 with a 1.48 WHIP and 120:71 K:BB across 26 starts (137.2 innings) this season. Gray will look to rebound in his next outing, currently lined up for this weekend against Miami.
Aug 23, 2023
Solid against Ysnkees
Gray did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing one run on one hit and five walks over six innings in a 2-1 victory over the Yankees. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Despite walking five, Gray held the Yankees to just one run on a Ben Rortvedt solo homer as he logged his first quality start since July 27. It was an impressive outing from the 25-year-old right-hander, who had struggled to an 11.12 ERA in his previous three outings. Overall, Gray's 7-10 with a 3.85 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 118:67 K:BB across 25 starts (135.2 innings) this season. He's currently in line to face the Blue Jays on the road in his next outing.
Aug 15, 2023
Struggles again in no-decision
Gray (7-10) took the loss Tuesday, allowing five runs on five hits and three walks over three innings against the Red Sox. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Gray needed 83 pitches to make it through just three innings in Tuesday's loss. The 25-year-old right-hander has hit a rough patch recently, allowing 14 runs over his last three starts (13.1 innings). Gray's ERA is now up to 3.96 with a 1.47 WHIP and 114:62 K:BB across 24 starts (129.2 innings) this season. He'll look to right the ship in his next start, currently scheduled for next week against the Yankees.
Aug 9, 2023
Can't complete five frames again
Gray came away with a no-decision in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Phillies, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander failed to complete five innings for the second straight start while issuing multiple free passes for the fourth straight, tossing 58 of 92 pitches for strikes before exiting. Gray left the mound on the hook for his 10th loss of the year, but the Nationals were able to rally in the late innings. He now carries a 4.88 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 24:16 K:BB through 31.1 innings since the beginning of July, a tough stretch for a pitcher who ended June with a 3.30 ERA. He'll look to regain his All-Star form in his next outing, which is likely to come at home early next week against the Red Sox.
Aug 1, 2023
Lasts 3.2 frames in loss
Gray (7-9) took the loss Tuesday versus Milwaukee after he gave up five runs on four hits and three walks in 3.2 innings. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander limited the Brewers to a single run through three frames but was unable to get through the fourth after he allowed four runs on two hits, three walks and a stolen base. The brief outing is Gray's shortest of the campaign and ended a string of 10 straight starts of at least five innings. It'ss also the third consecutive start and the 12th time this season he's issued at least three free passes, raising his BB/9 to 4.2.
Jul 28, 2023
Let down by offense and bullpen
Gray hurled six scoreless innings against the Mets on Thursday, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out four batters in a no-decision.
ANALYSIS
Gray didn't have his best control in the outing, needing 106 pitches to get through six frames and throwing 43 of them for balls. However, he did more than enough to earn a win, holding New York to just two hits and no runs. Gray got only a run of support from the Nationals offense and watched the team's bullpen give up the lead in the eighth inning, so he had to settle for a well-pitched no-decision. The 25-year-old finished July on a strong note, ending the month with two straight quality starts during which he yielded just one run over 13 frames.
Jul 23, 2023
Breezes to seventh victory
Gray (7-8) earned the win over San Francisco on Saturday, allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out four batters over seven innings.
ANALYSIS
Washington staked Gray to a six-run lead after two innings, and the right-hander had no problem making it hold up, allowing just a single run over seven frames. Gray finished with his first positive outing in July -- he had yielded nine runs (seven earned) on 18 hits and five walks over 10 innings across his previous two starts. The 25-year-old's quality start Saturday was just his second over his past 11 contests, a span during which he's posted a 4.07 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 53:29 K:BB over 59.2 frames.
Jul 17, 2023
Allows 10 hits to the Cardinals
Gray (6-8) took the loss Sunday against the Cardinals, allowing four runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out two in five innings.
ANALYSIS
The 10 hits allowed were a season-high for Gray, and the two strikeouts matched his season-low. He kept the Cardinals scoreless through three frames despite allowing two baserunners to reach in each inning before finally faltering in the fourth. Gray would go on to allow five base hits leading to three runs before surrendering a big fly to Nolan Gorman in the fifth. Gray's 3.59 ERA casts over the 1.47 WHIP and 4.85 FIP that come along with it, suggesting he's had some luck on his side this year. He's averaged at least a strikeout per inning in each of his past two seasons but sits at just an 8.0 K/9 this year while his walk rate remains up from previous years. He'll look to right the ship against San Francisco this coming week.
Jul 6, 2023
Falls to Cincinnati
Gray (6-7) took the loss Wednesday, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits and four walks over five innings against the Reds. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
It was a tough outing for Gray after he'd allowed just one run in his previous two starts (11.1 innings). After Gray allowed a solo homer to Joey Votto in the second inning, the Reds' tacked on another two unearned runs following a Jeimar Candelario error. The 25-year-old Gray, who was named to the All-Star team earlier this week, will carry a 3.41 ERA with a 1.44 WHIP and 92:47 K:BB into the break.
Jul 1, 2023
Strikes out eight in win
Gray (6-6) earned the win Friday, allowing one run on six hits and one walk over 6 innings in a 2-1 win over the Phillies. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
After allowing at least four runs in three of four appearances, Gray has found his groove again, giving up just one run over his last two starts (11.1 innings). The right-hander's eight strikeouts were his most since notching a season-high nine against the Mets on April 25. Overall, Gray sports a 3.30 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 86:43 K:BB across 95.1 innings, and he remains entrenched atop Washington's rotation. His next start is lined up for a home matchup against the Reds.
Jun 24, 2023
Bounces back Saturday
Gray (5-6) allowed four hits and four walks while striking out six over 5.1 shutout innings to earn the win Saturday over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Gray had allowed four or more runs in three of his last four outings. He didn't have his best stuff, throwing 58 of 99 pitches for strikes, but he successfully limited the damage to earn his first win since May 21. The 25-year-old right-hander has a lofty 4.2 BB/9, but he's been able to counter that fairly well with a 3.43 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 78:42 K:BB over 89.1 innings through 16 starts this year. Gray is projected for another road start next week in Philadelphia.
Jun 20, 2023
Allows season-high six runs
Gray (4-6) took the loss Monday, allowing six runs on nine hits and one walk over five innings against St. Louis. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Gray surrendered a season-high six earned runs and allowed multiple home runs for the third time over his past four starts. During that stretch, the right-hander has a 6.04 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and a 21:7 K:BB through 22.1 innings. The homers are a concerning trend considering Gray had given up only three long balls over his previous 10 appearances before his recent struggles. Overall, the 25-year-old's numbers are still solid (3.64 ERA and 1.39 WHIP), and he's solidified at the top of the Nationals' rotation moving forward. Gray's next start is lined up for a matchup in San Diego.
Jun 15, 2023
Continues to expand arsenal
Gray threw a sweeper 26 times in Wednesday's start against the Astros, throwing 18 strikes with the pitch and generating four swinging strikes, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The pitch is a new one for the right-hander, but it's quickly progressed from bullpen experiment to effective in-game weapon. Per Statcast, Gray had only thrown four total sweepers coming into Wednesday's start and instead had used four other pitches -- four-seam fastball, slider, curve and cutter -- more than 17 percent of the time this season while also mixing in an occasional sinker (seven percent). The 25-year-old cites pitchers like Yu Darvish and Chris Bassitt as veterans he's attempting to emulate with a more diverse arsenal, and there have been signs in 2023 the approach is working. While Gray's swinging strike rate remains basically unchanged from last year at 11.4 percent, he's generating more groundballs than ever before (42.2 percent) and has cut more than seven points off his HR/FB% (career-low 11.4 percent), pointing to a pitcher who's producing more weak contact than before. While his career-best 3.19 ERA isn't reflected in his 4.89 xFIP, Gray is taking steps toward evolving into a reliable mid

Goes seven innings in no-decision
Gray did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing four runs on six hits over seven innings in a 5-4 loss to the Astros. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Gray settled down after allowing two runs in the first inning, holding Houston off the board until he surrendered a pair of solo home runs in the fourth. Notably, it was the first time this season that Gray didn't issue a walk. The 25-year-old right-hander is 4-5 with a solid 3.19 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 66:37 K:BB across 14 starts (79 innings) this season. Gray's currently lined up for a home matchup with the Cardinals in his next outing.
Jun 10, 2023
Fans six in no-decision
Gray didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 3-2 loss to Atlanta, allowing one run on two hits and four walks over five innings. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander's control was erratic, to say the least -- he also uncorked four wild pitches -- but Gray limited the damage over his 96 pitches (56 strikes) against a dangerous offense and exited the game with the score tied 1-1. He's given up two runs or less in five of his last six outings, and Gray will take a 3.00 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 61:37 K:BB through 72 innings into his next start, likely to come next week in Houston.
Jun 8, 2023
ARI @ WAS postponed
Gray will not start Thursday against the Diamondbacks after the game was postponed due to hazardous air quality.
ANALYSIS
Canadian wildfires continue to spill smoke and haze over parts of the East Coast. Thursday's game will be made up June 22, which had been a shared off day for the Nationals and Diamondbacks. Gray will likely now take the ball for the Nats in Friday's series opener at Atlanta.
Jun 3, 2023
Gives up four runs in no-decision
Gray did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings in a 8-7 win over the Phillies. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Gray's four earned runs were the most he's allowed since giving up five during his season debut versus Atlanta. Overall, the right-hander's 3.09 ERA looks solid, but his 55:33 K:BB and 1.42 WHIP across 67 innings are less than ideal. Regardless, Gray is locked in at the top of Washington's rotation and is projected to pitch again during the finale of a three-game set versus Arizona.
May 28, 2023
Short outing Saturday
Gray did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over four innings against the Royals. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Gray needed 91 pitches (57 strikes) to make it through a season-low four innings Saturday. He continues to struggle with walks, allowing multiple free passes in six straight games, but despite a less-than-ideal 26:21 K:BB during that stretch (34 innings), he's still allowed only 10 earned runs. Since giving up five runs in his first appearance of the year, Gray has allowed two or fewer runs in nine of his last 10 outings and sports a 2.77 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 51:31 K:BB on the season.
May 21, 2023
Picks up win despite six walks
Gray (4-5) earned the win Sunday, allowing one run on three hits and six walks over five innings during a 6-4 win over Detroit. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Gray had allowed multiple walks in seven of his first nine starts this year, but his six free passes Sunday were a season high. He tied his season low with five completed innings but still earned the win thanks to an early lead. Gray's ERA has dropped to 2.65, but his 47:28 K:BB over 57.2 innings is becoming a bit worrisome. Either way, the right-hander remains locked in at the top of the Nationals' rotation and is projected to pitch again in Kansas City next weekend.
May 16, 2023
Sharp again in no-decision
Gray did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and three walks over seven innings against the Marlins. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Gray allowed a pair of runs in the second inning before blanking the Marlins over his final five frames, completing seven innings in a second consecutive start. Gray has allowed two runs or fewer in seven of his nine outings this season. The 25-year-old right-hander has had a breakout start to the season -- he's 3-5 with a 2.73 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 45:22 K:BB through 41.2 innings.
May 11, 2023
Picks up third win
Gray (3-5) earned the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks over seven innings during an 11-6 victory over the Giants. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Gray allowed two or fewer runs for the sixth time over his first eight starts and completed a season-high seven innings en route to his third win in his last four appearances. Since giving up five earned runs (three home runs) in his first outing of the year, the right-hander has surrendered just 10 runs over his past 40.2 innings (2.24 ERA). The only concern so far for Gray has been his walks. He's surrendered at least one free pass in all eight of his starts, including multiple walks six times.
May 6, 2023
Takes fifth loss of season
Gray (2-5) took the loss Friday, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings against the Diamondbacks. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Gray has turned in consistently decent starts this year, but the Nationals haven't been able to give him sufficient run support. Washington has scored just one run or less in all five of the right-hander's losses. The 25-year-old has posted adequate numbers this year, sporting a 3.03 ERA and 1.34 WHIP. Additionally, Gray has given up three runs or less in all but one of his starts this year.
Apr 30, 2023
Earns second straight win
Gray (2-4) earned the win Sunday, allowing one run on three hits and three walks over six innings against the Pirates. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Gray was tagged for five runs in his first start of the year, but he's been excellent since, allowing two runs or fewer in his last five outings. His ERA is down to 2.67 with a 1.28 WHIP and 31:13 K:BB. Gray's been able to limit hard contact this year, lowering his ground ball rate from 34% last season to 45% through his first 33.2 innings this year. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, tentatively scheduled for next week in Arizona.
Apr 26, 2023
Picks up first win
Gray (1-4) earned the win Tuesday, allowing no runs on four hits and one walk over six innings against the Mets. He struck out nine.
ANALYSIS
Gray dominated the Mets on Tuesday, fanning nine batters over six scoreless innings. He was rewarded for his efforts, picking up his first win of the 2022-23 campaign after taking a loss in each of his first four starts. Gray has been adequately filling the role of Washington's top arm, with a 2.93 ERA and 8.13 K/9 on the season while having allowed four runs in his last 22.2 innings.
Apr 19, 2023
Allows one run in loss
Gray (0-4) took the loss Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits and four walks over five innings against the Orioles. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Gray pitched well Tuesday, allowing just one run while scattering four hits and four walks. However, he'd fall to 0-4 as the Nationals' bats were stymied in a 1-0 loss. The 25-year-old Gray has been solid since allowing five runs in his first start of the year, allowing three runs over his last 16.2 innings. He has a 3.74 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 16:9 K:BB through 21.2 innings.
Apr 12, 2023
Dealt another loss
Gray (0-3) took the loss Tuesday against the Angels after he gave up two runs on four hits and two walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old threw 55 of 103 pitches for strikes and generated just eight whiffs, but he was mostly able to keep the Halos in check. The Nationals mustered one hit Tuesday and have scored only a single run across Gray's three starts this season, leading to three straight losses despite a solid 4.32 ERA.
Apr 7, 2023
Takes tough loss
Gray (0-2) pitched six innings in a loss to Colorado on Thursday, allowing one run on eight hits and one walk while striking out six batters.
ANALYSIS
Gray looked much better Thursday than he did in his first start of the campaign, when he gave up five runs over five innings against Atlanta. The right-hander racked up an impressive 19 swinging strikes and held Colorado to just one run, but he was on the wrong end of the 11th 1-0 outcome in Coors Field history. Gray should nonetheless have plenty of positive takeaways from this performance, as it was one of the best outings of his MLB career thus far.
Apr 1, 2023
Plagued by long balls to begin 2023
Gray (0-1) took the loss Saturday, coughing up five runs on seven hits -- including three home runs -- and two walks over five innings as the Nationals fell 7-1 to Atlanta. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
It was the same old story for the right-hander, who got taken deep by both Ronald Acuna and Matt Olson within the first six pitches of the game. Gray has posted a HR/9 of 2.30 or higher in each of the last two seasons, and it doesn't look like his offseason work to add a cutter to his arsenal have solved that puzzle. Until he learns to keep the ball in the park, the 25-year-old will be too volatile to use in most fantasy formats other than as a deep streaming option. His early-season problems could get worse before they get better, as Gray's next start is set to come on a road trip to Coors Field.
Mar 22, 2023
Sharp against Cards
Gray gave up four hits over six scoreless innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals. He struck out five without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander has put together a very encouraging spring, allowing only one run -- and zero home runs -- across 12.1 innings with an 11:1 K:BB. Gray has the talent to put together a breakout campaign in 2023 if he's able to keep the ball in the park consistently.
Mar 20, 2023
Gets stretched out on back field
Gray threw 82 pitches on a back field Thursday in order to work on his changeup rather than worrying about game results, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander has looked good over three Grapefruit League starts, posting a 6:1 K:BB through 6.1 and, perhaps more importantly, not giving up a home run, and Thursday's outing under controlled conditions indicates he's stretched out enough for the beginning of the regular season. Gray is still only 25 years old, and while his big-league numbers so far have been marred by his inability to keep the ball in the park, he still has plenty of upside. Adding a viable changeup to his arsenal might both improve his strikeout numbers and help him reduce his homers.
Mar 5, 2023
Looking good to start spring
Gray gave up three hits and struck out one over two scoreless innings during Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Facing a young St. Louis lineup that gave prominent spots in the batting order to the likes of Nolan Gorman and top prospect Jordan Walker, Gray breezed through the first two frames after needing only three pitches to strike out Brendan Donovan to lead off the game. The right-hander hasn't given up a run through his first three spring innings and is locked into a rotation spot for the Nationals, but Gray will need to find a solution to his long-ball woes -- he's served up 57 homers in 219.1 big-league innings so far in his career -- if he's going to become a reliable fantasy asset.
Feb 28, 2023
Adding cutter to mix
Gray threw nine pitches in a scoreless inning Sunday against the Mets, and five of them were cutters, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander added the pitch to his arsenal this winter after managing a 5.17 ERA and brutal 2.34 HR/9 through his first 219.1 big-league innings over the last two seasons. Gray's strikeout rates still offer plenty of optimism that he can develop into a quality pitcher, but the 25-year-old has a lot to prove before he can be considered a reliable fantasy option.
Oct 2, 2022
No more starts this season
Gray will not make another start this season, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He would have been on turn to take the ball Tuesday or Wednesday, but Cory Abbott, Paolo Espino and Erick Fedde will be the starters for the road series against the Mets. Gray doesn't turn 25 until December, but this was undoubtedly a rough first full season in the majors. The 6-foot-1 righty posted a 5.02 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 154 strikeouts across 148.2 innings while going 7-10 in 28 starts.
Sep 28, 2022
Quality start in no-decision
Gray did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over six innings against the Braves. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Gray got back on track Wednesday with his first quality start since Aug. 15. The only damage came via a solo homer off the bat of Matt Olson in the second inning as he only allowed three other batters to reach base on the night. The start comes as he had allowed a miserable 18 earned runs in 19.1 innings over his previous four outings. He will take a 5.02 ERA into his next start.
Sep 24, 2022
Falls to Marlins
Gray (7-10) took the loss Friday, giving up four runs on eight hits and a walk over six innings as the Nationals were downed 5-2 by the Marlins. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
For the first time since June 8, Gray didn't allow a homer while also walking less than two batters, but it still didn't result in a particularly effective outing. The right-hander has been tagged for at least four runs in four straight starts, and while his numbers on the season aren't good, he's gotten even worse since the All-Star break with a 6.57 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 46:25 K:BB through 50.2 innings over his last 10 trips to the mound. A career-high workload of 142.2 innings may be at least partially to blame for his late-season regression.
Sep 17, 2022
One bad frame Friday
Gray didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 5-4 win over the Marlins, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
All four runs off the right-hander crossed the plate in the second inning, with a two-run homer by Lewin Diaz being the big blast. Gray otherwise held Miami in check though, and he got taken off the hook for his 10th loss when the Nationals rallied in the seventh inning. His main issues remain, however -- Gray has served up at least one homer in 13 straight starts and walked multiple batters in 10 of them, a combination that has left him with a 6.32 ERA and 1.51 WHIP over that stretch despite a 10.0 K/9.

Shaky outing Thursday
Gray did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks over 3.1 innings against the Cardinals. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Gray was not at his best as he allowed nine runners to reach base, including two home runs and three walks, but he was able to avoid the loss as the Nationals scored 11 runs on the day. The 24-year-old has now allowed at least one home run in each of his last 12 outings dating back to June 25 and has walked at least three batters in five of those. His ERA has increased more than a full run from 3.95 on June 18 to 5.06. He will try to get back on track in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled for next week against Miami.

Mauled by Mets
Gray (7-9) took the loss Friday, coughing up six runs on six hits and four walks over five innings as the Nationals were downed 7-3 by the Mets. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Four of the hits off the right-hander went for extra bases, including homers by Eduardo Escobar and Pete Alonso. It's the sixth time in his last nine starts Gray has served up multiple long balls, and he carries a shaky 6.08 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, 3.4 HR/9 and 54:22 K:BB through 47.1 innings over that stretch.

Re-entering rotation Friday
Nationals manager Dave Martinez confirmed that Gray will make his next start Friday against the Mets at Citi Field, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Unless he's needed in an emergency out of the bullpen over the next three games, Gray will be returning to the mound Friday on 11 days' rest. The Nationals' decision to skip Gray's turn through the rotation was a matter of workload management, and it's possible that the Nationals deploy a six-man rotation in the final five weeks of the season or pass him over for a start on at least one or two more occasions in an effort to keep his innings in check. When he's available to make starts, Gray isn't expected to face any major restrictions, though the Nationals likely won't have him push far past 100 pitches in those outings.

Getting skipped in rotation
Manager Dave Martinez said Wednesday that Gray will have his turn in the rotation skipped this week as the Nationals aim to manage his innings load, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Gray had been lined up to start this weekend against the Reds, but the Nationals will instead call up prospect Cade Cavalli from Triple-A Rochester to fill his spot in what's shaping up to be a six-man rotation for Washington. Though Martinez noted that Gray won't be shut down after having accumulated 123.1 innings through his 23 starts this season, the right-hander won't necessarily make every turn through the rotation over the final six weeks of the campaign. Dougherty speculates that the soonest Gray will make his next start will come during the three-game series against the Mets that begins Sept. 2.
Aug 23, 2022
Workload being monitored
Gray has already set a new career high in innings pitched this season, and the Nationals are keeping a close eye on his workload and in-game mechanics, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. "We're looking at kind of the wear and tear, how he reacts in-game, a lot of mechanics -- is he using his lower half ... is he flying open?" manager Dave Martinez said Saturday night. "We'll keep an eye on a lot of stuff."
ANALYSIS
The right-hander is fourth in the league in innings pitched by a second-year starter behind Alek Manoah, Shane McClanahan and Logan Gilbert, but Gray also tossed far fewer innings in 2021 than any of that trio. With Erick Fedde (shoulder) expected to return from the IL this week and the Nats having a few scheduled off days over the next couple weeks, they will have opportunities to skip Gray in the rotation if they feel he needs extra rest. The 24-year-old has a 4.67 ERA and 1.31 WHIP through 123.1 innings on the season, with a strong 10.2 K/9 balanced by a rough 2.3 HR/9.
Aug 21, 2022
Struggles with control
Gray didn't factor into the decision during Saturday's 2-1 loss to San Diego, allowing one run on four hits and five walks with three strikeouts in five innings.
ANALYSIS
Gray put runners on in every frame and could have fared far worse had he not escaped bases loaded jams in the first and third innings. The 24-year-old was able to find the zone with only 55 of his 102 pitches while the five free passes mark his highest total of the season, and he's issued multiple walks in six of his last seven turns. Gray's 3.87 BB/9 rank second worst among 59 qualified starters, though his 1.31 WHIP is decent thanks to a 13th ranked .256 BABIP. He carries a 4.67 ERA into his next start, scheduled for next weekend against Cincinnati.

Fans 10 in no-decision
Gray did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over six innings in a 5-4 win over the Cubs. He struck out 10.
ANALYSIS
Ian Happ took him deep twice, but otherwise it was a strong outing for Gray as he tossed 105 pitches (67 strikes) en route to his second straight quality start and eighth of the season. Long balls remain the right-hander's Achilles heel, however -- he's served up at least one homer in nine straight starts and has a 5.94 ERA over that stretch thanks to a 3.1 HR/9, despite a 1.34 WHIP and 11.5 K/9.
Aug 10, 2022
Quality start against Cubs
Gray didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the Cubs, allowing two runs on seven hits over 6.1 innings. He struck out five without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander took a shutout into the seventh inning before fading, but the Nationals' bullpen simply made things worse after Gray exited the game. He had to settle for his seventh quality start of the season and first since July 6, but he still got taken deep once again -- his eighth straight outing in which he's served up at least one home run. Gray's 6.14 ERA over that stretch hides an otherwise impressive 54:14 K:BB through 44 innings, but until he learns to keep the ball in the yard, he'll be a volatile fantasy option.

Ambushed by Phillies
Gray (7-8) took the loss Friday as the Nationals were downed 7-2 by the Phillies, surrendering six runs on five hits -- including four home runs -- and three walks over four innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Three of the long balls came in the first inning before J.T. Realmuto capped the barrage in the third with a two-run shot. Gray got the hook after 79 pitches (46 strikes) having served up multiple homers for the fourth time in his last five trips to the mound, a gruesome stretch in which he's compiled a 7.20 ERA and 1.44 WHIP despite a superficially successful 34:11 K:BB through 25 innings. Gray now has a 2.4 HR/9 for his big-league career, and the 24-year-old will never come close to reaching his full potential without first solving his homer woes.
Jul 31, 2022
Tagged with four runs
Gray (7-7) allowed four runs on five hits and two walks over five innings Sunday, striking out six and taking a loss against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Gray allowed just one run through three frames before he served up a three-run shot to Corey Dickerson in the fourth. The 24-year-old righty posted an unsightly 6.75 ERA with a 36:10 K:BB through five starts in July. Gray is now sporting a 4.59 ERA across 102 innings this season. He's lined up to start in Philadelphia next week.
Jul 27, 2022
Permits three runs in no-decision
Gray didn't factor into the decision during Tuesday's 8-3 victory over the Dodgers, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts in five innings.
ANALYSIS
Gray settled down after surrendering a leadoff home run to Mookie Betts to prevent Los Angeles from scoring over the next three frames, however, he faltered in the fifth when two more runs scored on three hits. The 24-year-old continues to miss bats with 14 swinging strikes on 94 pitches and has now struck out 30 batters in 22.2 innings across four starts this month, though he's also permitted 16 runs during the stretch. Gray carries a 4.45 ERA and 1.28 WHIP with 112 strikeouts in 97 innings into his next start, scheduled for next week against the Mets.
Jul 14, 2022
Can't keep ball in yard Wednesday
Gray (7-6) took the loss in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Mariners, surrendering five runs on six hits -- including three home runs -- and three walks over five innings as the Nationals fell 6-4. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander tossed only 57 of 97 pitches for strikes before exiting, and all five of the runs off Gray crossed the plate on the three long balls he served up -- a three-run blast by Eugenio Suarez in the first inning, and a pair of solo shots by Jesse Winker and Adam Frazier in the fourth. Gray has been tagged for seven homers over his last four starts and 21 in 92 innings on the season, leading to a 4.40 ERA despite an otherwise palatable 1.27 WHIP and 106:39 K:BB.
Jul 12, 2022
Tuesday's start postponed
Gray won't start as scheduled Tuesday versus the Mariners since the game was postponed due to inclement weather.
ANALYSIS
The contest will be made up via a doubleheader Wednesday, and Gray should start one of those games. The postponement likely means it will be his final appearance prior to the All-Star break.
Jul 6, 2022
Rebounds well against Phillies
Gray (7-5) earned the win Wednesday after he pitched six innings, surrendering two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out 11 versus the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Gray returned to form Wednesday, limiting the Phillies to two runs on two Kyle Schwarber solo homers while striking out a season-high 11 batters. He produced his sixth quality start of the campaign and got back on the right track following a six-run implosion against the Marlins in his last outing. Even with the clunker from last time mixed in, Gray has produced a 2.68 ERA and 1.12 WHIP with 48 punchouts over 40.2 innings in his last seven starts. The hot stretch has his season numbers at a 4.14 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with 99 strikeouts over 87 frames in 16 starts in 2022.
Jul 2, 2022
Picked apart by Marlins
Gray (6-5) took the loss Friday as the Nationals fell 6-3 to the Marlins, coughing up six runs on 10 hits and two walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Only three of the season-high 10 hits off the right-hander went for extra bases, including a Brian Anderson solo shot in the third inning, but Gray couldn't get outs when he needed to and four straight singles to lead off the sixth helped spell the end of his night. The performance snapped a string of five straight starts in which he'd allowed two runs or fewer, and Gray will take a 4.22 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 88:35 K:BB through 81 innings into his next outing.
Jun 26, 2022
Strikes out nine
Gray gave up two earned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out nine over seven innings in a 3-2 loss to the Rangers on Saturday. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Gray had one of his best starts of the year at Texas and has continued to show a propensity to pitch well on the road. He now boasts a 2.01 road ERA on the season and an excellent 1.13 ERA over the month of June. The home run has been Gray's major weakness, and the two-run blast he surrendered to Nathaniel Lowe was his 15th long ball in 14 appearances this season. Look for Gray to take the mound at home against the Marlins on Friday.
Jun 19, 2022
Tosses six scoreless innings
Gray pitched six scoreless innings against Philadelphia on Saturday, allowing one hit on three walks while striking out four. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Gray wasn't efficient in the outing, needing 117 pitches -- only 66 of which were strikes -- to make it through six frames. However, he gave up only one hit (a first-inning infield single) to record his second straight scoreless start. The right-hander struggled to a 5.44 ERA over his first nine appearances of the season, but he's since allowed just two earned runs over 22 innings covering four starts to lower his ERA to 3.95. Gray continues to struggle with walks, however -- he's issued at least three free passes in four of his past five appearances and has racked up 32 walks on the season, tied for third most in the league.
Jun 15, 2022
Next start coming Saturday
Gray is scheduled to make his next start in Saturday's home game against the Phillies, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Gray was lined up to make two starts at the beginning of the week, but he was ultimately scratched from his scheduled outing Monday against Atlanta since the Nationals didn't want to have him warm up a second time following a 90-minute rain delay. Rather than having Gray pitch a couple days later, the Nationals elected to skip his turn in the rotation entirely. Gray will take a 6-4 record, 4.33 ERA and 1.32 WHIP into his 13th start of the season this weekend.
Jun 13, 2022
No longer starting Monday
Gray is not starting Monday's game against the Braves, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
ANALYSIS
Gray appeared to have finished his pregame warmups and was ready to take the mound, but then rain delayed the contest for an hour and a half. The right-hander figures to be able to go Tuesday, but the Nationals have yet to announce their pitching plan for the second game of the series. Erasmo Ramirez will start what figures to be a bullpen game Monday evening.
Jun 9, 2022
Fans six in no-decision
Gray didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 2-1 extra-inning loss to the Marlins, allowing six hits and a walk over five scoreless innings. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander dueled Miami ace Sandy Alcantara to a standstill for five frames as the two teams wound up doing all their scoring in the 10th. Gray tossed 69 of 101 pitches for strikes before exiting, continuing a hot streak that has seen him give up one earned run or less in three straight outings. He'll take a 4.33 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 69:29 K:BB through 62.1 innings into his next start.
Jun 4, 2022
Beats Reds for sixth win
Gray (6-4) earned the win Friday, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks while striking out nine over six innings against the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Facing the team that originally drafted him in 2018, Gray turned in arguably his best start of the season so far. He had a recent blowup against another former team -- the Dodgers -- but the 24-year-old right-hander has responded well with two earned runs allowed and 12 strikeouts in his last two starts (11 innings). Gray should be considered a volatile option given the walks and homers. While he can flash brilliance, Gray is still inconsistent.
May 29, 2022
Back in win column
Gray (5-4) allowed one run on three hits and four walks over five innings Sunday, striking out three and earning a win over the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
After serving up a leadoff home run to Charlie Blackmon on the second pitch of the game, Gray kept Colorado off the board for the rest of his outing. Since his last win on May 7, he coughed up 16 runs on seven homers over his last three outings. The 24-year-old righty lowered his ERA to 5.08 with a 54:25 K:BB through 51.1 innings. Gray is lined up to take the mound in Cincinnati next week.
May 25, 2022
Bludgeoned by Dodgers
Gray (4-4) took the loss Tuesday as the Nationals were downed 9-4 by the Dodgers, surrendering seven runs on five hits -- including three home runs -- and three walks over three innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
It was the worst performance of the year for the right-hander, as Gray needed 80 pitches (47 strikes) to record only nine outs against his former club. The 24-year-old has been unable to keep the ball in the yard as the weather has warmed up, serving up nine homers over his last four starts and 20.1 innings, and the rough stretch has left Gray with a 5.44 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 51:21 K:BB through 46.1 frames on the season.
May 19, 2022
Fans seven in quality start
Gray didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 5-4 extra-inning win over the Marlins, giving up three runs on six hits over six innings. He struck out seven without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
It was arguably the right-hander's sharpest performance yet this season, as he didn't issue any free passes for the first time in eight starts. Gray tossed 95 pitches (65 strikes) en route to his second quality start of the season, and he'll take a 4.36 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 46:18 K:BB through 43.1 innings into his next outing.
May 14, 2022
Rebounds from awful first inning
Gray fell to 4-3 on the season Friday against the Astros, allowing six runs on six hits across six innings while striking out five batters and walking two.
ANALYSIS
Almost all the damage the Astros did came in the first inning, a frame in which they homered twice and crossed the plate five times. Gray was allowed to remain in the game and threw five good innings after that, allowing just one more run on a Yordan Alvarez homer. It's not an outing that will have helped out any fantasy teams, but the ability to rebound at least represents an encouraging sign for the 24-year-old righty. He'll look to pitch well from the start his next time out, which lines up to come Wednesday against the Marlins.
May 8, 2022
Posts fourth win
Gray (4-2) earned the win during Saturday's 7-3 victory over the Angels, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Gray was staked to an early 4-0 lead and almost gave it up in a three-run fourth inning but held on to record his fourth win in five starts. Excluding his first turn, Gray has permitted eight runs 27.1 innings -- good for a 2.63 ERA -- though he's already handed out 16 free passes. The 24-year-old will be in for a challenge as he's scheduled to face Houston next weekend.
May 1, 2022
Six shutout frames
Gray (3-2) picked up the win during Sunday's 11-5 victory over San Francisco, allowing one hit and four walks with three strikeouts in six scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
Gray took the hill with a 5-0 lead in hand and breezed through the first four innings, only encountering trouble when he loaded the bases in the fifth but was able to strikeout Darin Ruf to end the threat. The 24-year-old has excelled in two road starts thus far, tossing 11 scoreless innings combined, compared to surrendering nine runs in 15 innings during three home games. The totals come out to a solid 3.12 ERA, 31 strikeouts and a slightly high 1.31 WHIP in 26 innings.
Apr 27, 2022
Fans 10 in Tuesday's loss
Gray (2-2) took the loss Tuesday as the Nationals were downed 5-2 by the Marlins, giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out 10.
ANALYSIS
The 10 whiffs tied his career high and Gray fired 66 of his 98 pitches for strikes, but his command within the zone left something to be desired as he got hit hard, with Joey Wendle's three-run shot in the fourth inning proving to be the difference in the game. Gray's 32.9 percent strikeout rate through 20 innings this season is definitely encouraging, but it comes with an 11.8 percent walk rate fueling his 4.05 ERA and 1.45 WHIP.
Apr 25, 2022
Two-start week on deck
Gray is scheduled to make his next start Tuesday against the Marlins in Washington.
ANALYSIS
Both Gray and Joan Adon were options for two starts last week after the two took the hill for the April 19 doubleheader with Arizona, but Washington ended up going with Adon over Gray for Sunday's 12-3 loss to the Giants. Gray will instead take the hill on six days' rest for the Nationals' first game this week Tuesday, setting himself up to make a second turn over the weekend in San Francisco. After getting tagged for four runs on eight hits and two walks in his first start of the season April 8 against the Mets, Gray has bounced back effectively in his subsequently two outings. He's worked five and 5.1 innings, respectively, in wins over Atlanta and Arizona, permitting only one earned run between the starts while striking out 13.
Apr 20, 2022
Nabs second win
Gray (2-1) picked up the win in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Diamondbacks, giving up one run on three hits and two walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Daulton Varsho took him deep for a solo shot in the third inning, but otherwise Gray did a good job stifling Arizona's bats. The right-hander threw 50 of 87 pitches for strikes, and while his control so far has been a little shaky, Gray still sports a 3.14 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 18:7 K:BB through his first 14.1 innings this season.
Apr 19, 2022
Starts first game of twin bill
Gray is scheduled to start the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Diamondbacks, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
After his scheduled start Monday was postponed due to rain in Washington, Gray will get pushed back one day to take the hill during the twin bill. Joan Adon is slated to start the nightcap, which will leave both him and Gray on their normal four days' rest heading into Sunday's home game against the Giants. Expect Gray to pick up his second start of the week that day, while Adon likely won't make his next turn through the rotation until early next week.
Apr 18, 2022
Monday's contest postponed
The Nationals game against the Diamonbacks was postponed and will be made up Tuesday as a part of a split doubleheader.
ANALYSIS
Gray was slated to face the Diamondbacks on Monday, but his start will get pushed back a day. The right-hander has posted a 4.00 ERA and 1.56 WHIP with 10 strikeouts over nine innings in his first two starts of the season
Apr 13, 2022
Sharp in win over Atlanta
Gray (1-1) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing only one hit and three walks over five scoreless innings in a 3-1 victory over Atlanta. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
After a rough start to the season against the Mets, Gray rebounded in impressive fashion. The right-hander fired 50 of 82 pitches for strikes, and Atlanta didn't get a runner past second base until Gray was out of the game. The 24-year-old will take a 4.00 ERA and 10:5 K:BB through nine innings into his next start, scheduled for Monday at home against the Diamondbacks.
Apr 9, 2022
Scuffles against Mets
Gray (0-1) took the loss Friday, giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks over four-plus innings as the Nationals fell 7-3 to the Mets. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander had trouble commanding his stuff, throwing only 47 of 80 pitches for strikes and getting tagged for four extra-base hits when he did come over the plate, including a Jeff McNeil solo shot in the third inning. Gray's April doesn't get any easier in his next outing, a road start Wednesday in Atlanta against the defending champs.
Apr 6, 2022
Begins season as No. 2 starter
Manager Dave Martinez said Wednesday that Gray will start the second game of the Nationals' season-opening series with the Mets, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Gray is tentatively lined up to start Friday, though Martinez acknowledged that the right-hander may be moved back to Saturday if Thursday's season opener is postponed due to rain being in the forecast that day in Washington D.C. Though Gray's spot in the rotation was never believed to be in any jeopardy, fantasy managers be best off treading carefully with the 24-year-old, who struggled with both his command and control as a rookie. He showed improvement in the latter area by posting a 13:1 K:BB over 9.2 innings during the Grapefruit League season, but he surrendered five home runs en route to finishing the exhibition slate with a 9.31 ERA.
Mar 25, 2022
Fans five in Thursday's outing
Gray gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits over 3.1 innings in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
After a shaky spring debut, Gray was able to hit his spots better in his second outing. The 24-year-old is locked into a rotation spot for the Nationals to begin the season, and his ability to stay out of the middle of the plate will be one of the keys to his development in 2022 after he posted an ugly 2.42 HR/9 and 5.48 ERA over his first 70.2 big-league innings last year.
Mar 20, 2022
Rocked in spring debut
Gray gave up four runs on four hits, including three home runs, in 1.2 innings during Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets.
ANALYSIS
It was not an encouraging start to the spring for the 24-year-old considering he served up 19 homers in 70.2 big-league innings last season between the Dodgers and Nationals, but manager Dave Martinez thinks Gray will be able to iron out the issues he had Saturday, per Jessica Camerato of MLB.com. "He threw the ball well," Martinez said after the game. "The ball was coming out -- it was just, location. A couple balls he tried to get in just ran back over the plate. ... For him, it's working ahead in counts. His putaway pitch, he's trying to bury too many pitches. He's got to start throwing his breaking balls a little bit more for strikes." Gray has a spot in the Opening Day rotation locked up, and Washington is hoping his 24.8 percent strikeout rate in the majors last year is a better reflection of his future than his bloated HR rate.
Sep 28, 2021
Earns second straight win
Gry (2-2) allowed three runs on four hits and three walks over 5.1 innings Monday, striking out four and earning a win over the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Gray kept Colorado off the board through five innings and didn't face much of a threat until the sixth. He allowed the first three batters of the inning to reach base and eventually coughed up a three-run double to Ryan McMahon, ending his outing. The 6-foot-1 rookie has completed at least five innings in four straight starts but owns a 6.23 ERA during that span. Gray is expected to make his final start of the year this weekend at home against Boston.
Sep 22, 2021
Pockets first MLB win
Gray (1-2) allowed two runs on six hits and a walk over six innings against Miami on Wednesday to earn his first career victory. He also registered eight strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Gray bounced back in a big way after having been pounded for 22 runs (and 14 walks) over his four previous starts, limiting the Marlins to RBI singles by Lewin Diaz and Jesus Sanchez. Gray stranded a pair of runners in the sixth inning to complete his fourth quality start since being acquired from the Dodgers at the trade deadline. Despite his inconsistencies, the 23-year-old has likely flashed enough -- including a 9.86 K/9 over 59.1 innings -- to solidify a rotation spot entering 2022. Gray is lined up to face the Rockies at Coors Field next Monday.
Sep 18, 2021
No-decision versus Rockies
Gray allowed five runs on three hits and four walks while striking out five in 5.1 innings in a no-decision versus Colorado on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Control continues to be a problem for Gray, who threw 58 of 94 pitches for strikes in this contest. He's walked 10 batters in 10.1 innings across his last two starts. The 23-year-old owns a 6.24 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 57:27 K:BB in 53.1 innings overall, while adding an 0-2 record in 11 appearances. Gray projects for a friendlier road start in Miami next week.
Sep 12, 2021
Can't find plate against Bucs
Gray didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 10-7 loss to the Pirates, coughing up five runs on three hits and six walks over five innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander threw only 54 of 100 pitches for strikes, and when he did get the ball over the plate it got hit hard, as Bryan Reynolds and Ben Gamel both took him deep. The wheels have suddenly come off for Gray, and after posting a 2.89 ERA and 1.11 WHIP through his first five starts as a Nat, he's been tagged with a 12.75 ERA and 2.25 WHIP over his last three.
Sep 5, 2021
Another tough start Sunday
Gray allowed six runs on seven hits and a walk with two strikeouts in three innings versus the Mets on Sunday. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old has yielded a half-dozen runs in each of his last two starts, covering just seven innings in that span. The right-hander allowed the Mets to cobble together four runs in the first inning and then yielded solo home runs to Jonathan Villar and Javier Baez before he was removed from the game. Gray has struggled to a 5.65 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 48:17 K:BB through 43 innings between the Nationals and the Dodgers this year. He's in line for a favorable road start versus Pittsburgh during next weekend's three-game series.
Aug 31, 2021
Falls to Phillies
Gray (0-2) took the loss Monday, coughing up six runs on seven hits and three walks over four innings as the Nationals were downed 7-4 by the Phillies. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander served up a two-run shot to Bryce Harper in the first inning on his 10th pitch of the game, and it was all downhill from there for Gray. It's the first time in six starts for the Nats he's failed to last at least five innings or given up more than three runs, but the one constant for Gray has been his inability to keep the ball in the park -- he's been tagged for at least one homer in every big-league appearance this year, and his 4.72 ERA is fueled by a 2.92 HR/9.
Aug 26, 2021
Fans seven in no-decision
Gray didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Marlins, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander was sharp through 91 pitches (62 strikes), but Gray exited the game on the hook for his second loss of the year until the Nats did all their scoring in the top of the seventh inning. He's reeled off three straight quality starts, and over 28 innings since being traded east from the Dodgers the 23-year-old has a 2.89 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 29:8 K:BB through 28 innings.

Tosses quality start Wednesday
Gray didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 8-5 win over the Blue Jays, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Both runs came on solo shots by Teoscar Hernandez and Marcus Semien, but Gray was otherwise sharp as he delivered his second straight quality start. In four outings since heading east as part of the Max Scherzer/Trea Turner trade, the 23-year-old has an impressive 2.86 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 22:5 K:BB. If there's been an issue for Gray so far as a Nat, it's the difficulty he's had keeping the ball in the park -- he's served up seven homers in those four starts, but miraculously they've all come with the bases empty.

Charged with loss Friday
Gray (0-1) allowed three runs on five hits and no walks while striking out six in six innings to take the loss against Atlanta on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Gray limited Atlanta's offense to a single across the first four innings of Friday's matchup, but he allowed solo home runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to put him in line for his first loss of the year. Across three starts since he was traded to the Nationals, the right-hander has posted a 2.81 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in 16 innings. He tentatively lines up to make his next appearance on the road against Milwaukee on Friday.

Fans 10 batters Saturday
Gray struck out 10 batters over five innings in a no-decision against Atlanta on Saturday. He surrendered two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks.
ANALYSIS
In the best outing of his young career, Gray induced 20 swinging strikes in just five frames and racked up a career-high 10 punchouts. He allowed a solo homer to Jorge Soler in the first inning but was otherwise difficult to score upon, with the only other run against him coming as a result of an error in the third frame. The right-hander has looked superb in his first two starts with Washington, allowing a total of two earned runs over a combined 10 innings. He's tentatively lined up to face the Braves again -- this time at home -- next Friday.

Solid in Nats debut
Gray didn't factor into the decision in Monday's 7-5 loss to the Phillies, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Making his Washington debut, Gray blanked Philadelphia for four frames before Odubel Herrera launched a solo shot off him in the fifth, and he tossed 47 of 71 pitches for strikes before exiting. The right-hander hadn't lasted longer than four innings in either of his appearances for the Dodgers prior to heading east at the trade deadline, so the reduced workload is likely just temporary, but keeping the ball in the park has been a challenge so far in the majors -- Gray has served up five homers in only 13 innings.

Debuting Monday for Washington
Gray was activated to the Nationals' 26-man roster Sunday and will start Monday against the Phillies, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Gray made his first MLB start July 25 for the Dodgers before being traded to the Nationals on Friday, and he'll debut for his new team Monday. The 23-year-old was one of Los Angeles' top prospects and allowed six runs on seven hits with a 13:5 K:BB in eight innings across his first two appearances in the majors.

Traded to Nationals
Gray is reportedly being traded from the Dodgers to the Nationals along with Keibert Ruiz, Gerardo Carrillo and Donovan Casey on Thursday, in exchange for Max Scherzer and Trea Turner (COVID-19), Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Gray was widely considered the top prospect in the Dodgers' system and recently made his major-league debut. He should slot right into the Nationals rotation, which is now missing both Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg (neck). Prior to getting the call to the majors, Gray posted a 2.87 ERA and 0.66 WHIP across 15.2 frames with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Starting Sunday's game
Gray will start Sunday's contest against the Rockies, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
It had been unclear what Gray's role would be going forward, but Wednesday's announcement resolves that. The rookie gets the starting nod after entering Tuesday's game to allow four runs in four innings while striking out seven.

Fans seven in big-league debut
Gray hurled four innings against the Giants on Tuesday, allowing four runs on four hits and one walk while striking out seven. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander entered the game for his major-league debut in the third inning following opener Darien Nunez. Gray put up an uneven first impression, allowing three long balls but notching 15 swinging strikes and seven punchouts in just four frames. His stuff certainly lived up to the hype as the Dodgers' top pitching prospect, though he'll need to do a better job of keeping the ball in the park to find prolonged success. Gray has a chance to stick with the big club given the current thinness of the Dodgers' rotation, though it remains to be seen if he'll continue following an opener or move into a traditional starting role. His next appearance could come Sunday at home against Colorado.

Contract selected, following opener
Gray had his contract selected by the Dodgers and will follow oepner Darien Nunez versus the Giants on Tuesday, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Gray will make his major-league debut after posting a 2.87 ERA, 0.66 WHIP and 22:2 K:BB over 15.2 innings (four outings) at Triple-A Oklahoma City this season. The 23-year-old completed five frames in only one of his minor-league appearances, but he'll have a better chance of qualifying for a victory since he's following an opener.

Working behind opener in debut
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that Gray, who is set to receive a promotion from Triple-A Oklahoma City, will serve as a bulk reliever rather than a starter in Tuesday's game against the Giants, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Roberts didn't name an opener, but he indicated one of the four lefties in the bullpen (Garrett Cleavinger, Darien Nunez, Alex Vesia and Victor Gonzalez) would work ahead of the right-handed Gray in his MLB debut. The arrangement should increase Gray's chances of factoring into any decision, as he was unlikely to work especially deep into Tuesday's contest if he had been deployed as a traditional starter. Because he missed a large chunk of the Triple-A season while recovering from a shoulder impingement, Gray has only made four appearances for Oklahoma City in 2021. He's been sharp since being activated from the injured list in early July, though, posting a 2.53 ERA, 0.47 WHIP and 12:0 K:BB across 10.2 innings in three outings.

Expecting Tuesday activation
Gray is expected to be promoted to the major-league team ahead of Tuesday's game against San Francisco, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Dodgers don't yet know what role Gray will play in Tuesday's matchup, as it will depend on the bullpen situation following Monday's game. Either way, Gray appears in line to take the mound Tuesday, either as a starter or as a long reliever. The right-hander has posted a 2.87 ERA with 22 punchouts over 15.2 innings at Triple-A Oklahoma City in 2021.

Could start Tuesday for big club
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Sunday that Gray is "in the mix" to receive a call-up from Triple-A Oklahoma City to start Tuesday's game against the Giants, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Roberts indicated that the Dodgers' plans for Tuesday's contest will likely hinge on what sort of innings totals the team receives from starters David Price and Tony Gonsolin on Sunday and Monday, respectively. If the Dodgers' relief arms aren't too taxed following Monday's series opener with San Francisco, the team could opt for a bullpen day Tuesday. In addition to potentially tabbing Gray for the spot start, Roberts said one of the team's other top prospects, Ryan Pepiot, is also being considered for a promotion from Double-A Tulsa. Gray, 23, has made four starts at Triple-A this season, compiling a 2.87 ERA, 0.66 WHIP and 22:2 K:BB in 15.2 innings.

Tosses four shutout frames with OKC
Gray continued to get stretched out during his start with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday, as he allowed one hit across four scoreless innings. He fanned four and did not walk a batter while tossing 53 pitches.
ANALYSIS
The Dodgers said earlier in the week that Gray would have to get stretched out to pitch around five innings and/or 75 pitches before he's considered an option to join the big-league rotation. Saturday's performance marks a big step toward achieving that milestone, as the right-hander now figures to require at most one more outing in Triple-A to get his arm where the Dodgers want it. Gray's presence could be needed in the majors at some point in the near future with Clayton Kershaw (forearm) and Trevor Bauer (not injury related) currently sidelined.
Jul 5, 2021
Building up workload
Gray (shoulder) will need to be able to throw five innings and/or 75 pitches to potentially be called up this season, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The righty threw two innings in Triple-A Oklahoma City's game Sunday before throwing a third frame in the bullpen. The contending Dodgers will certainly be in need of starting pitching depth down the stretch and in the postseason, especially if Trevor Bauer misses significant time. Gray certainly has a chance of getting promoted if he can build up to that five inning mark, which manager Dave Roberts described Monday as a "floor" for his receiving big-league consideration in 2021.
Jul 4, 2021
Starting at Triple-A
Gray (shoulder) is starting Sunday's game at Triple-A Oklahoma City, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Gray had been sidelined with a shoulder impingement since mid-May, but he'll return to game action for the first time Sunday. The right-hander had been tossing bullpen sessions and a simulated game recently, and he could still be an option to be called up to the majors at some point in 2021. The Dodgers could be in need of a fifth starter in the near future depending on the outcome of the league's investigation into the allegations against Trevor Bauer, but it's not yet clear when Gray could be considered ready to join the major-league roster following his lengthy layoff.
Jul 4, 2021
Still an option for Dodgers in 2021
Gray is progressing from his shoulder impingement and is an option to contribute to the big club at some point this season, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
A few weeks after Gray went down with the shoulder issue, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts mentioned that the right-hander could have received his first big-league call-up if not for the injury. While he hasn't yet returned to game action, Gray has been working toward a return by tossing multiple bullpen sessions and a simulated game. That likely still puts him weeks away from even being considered an option for the big club, but Roberts suggested Saturday that the team is keeping Gray in mind as a potential contributor once he gets healthy. The Dodgers could be in need of a fifth starter depending on the outcome of the league's investigation into the assault and sexual assault allegations made against Trevor Bauer.

Not close to joining Dodgers
Manager Dave Roberts said Friday that Gray (shoulder) will not be joining the Dodgers' rotation "in the near future," Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
The righty has thrown simulated games since his early-May shoulder impingement, will be re-evaluated "down the road," according to Roberts. Considering Gray's standing as a top organizational prospect, the Dodgers will certainly exercise caution in timing his potential big-league call-up in 2021.
Jun 28, 2021
Hurls sim game
Gray threw a simulated game Friday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Gray has thrown multiple bullpen sessions and now a simulated game as he works his way back from a shoulder impingement. The club continues to discuss whether they'll use Gray in a relief role or as a starter later in the season when he makes his big-league debut, but he's currently stretched out to be used in a starting role.
Jun 25, 2021
Throws to hitters Friday
Gray (shoulder) threw to hitters Friday, Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Gray was shut down in early May with a shoulder impingement. He resumed playing catch earlier in June and Friday's update marks the first word of him throwing off a mound. The right-hander will likely be sent to Triple-A Oklahoma City when he's ready to pitch in games, but he could make his major-league debut later in 2021.
Jun 19, 2021
Not close to returning
Manager Dave Roberts said Saturday that Gray has yet to throw a bullpen session as he continues to recover fro shoulder impingement, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Gray has been dealing with the shoulder issue since early May. While Roberts said that the right-hander has resumed playing catch, the fact that he's yet throw off a mound indicates that he's at least a couple weeks away from pitching in a game. The prospect was initially assigned to Triple-A Oklahoma City to begin the season but logged just one outing before hitting the injured list. He'll likely resume his campaign with Oklahoma City when the time comes, but he still figures to have a chance to make his major-league debut during the second half of 2021.
May 27, 2021
Missed opportunity due to injury
Gray would have made a spot start for the Dodgers if not for a shoulder impingement that has kept him out of action for multiple weeks, Matthew Moreno of Dodger Blue reports.
ANALYSIS
The Dodgers have been rolling with a four-man rotation supplemented by bullpen games since losing Dustin May to Tommy John surgery in early May. Manager Dave Roberts said Wednesday that Gray would have made a spot start along the way if healthy, but the right-hander remains out due to the shoulder issue. Tony Gonsolin (shoulder) could be activated from the injured list after two more rehab starts and would presumably fill the fifth spot in the rotation upon his return, so Gray's window for helping the big club in the immediate future is likely closed for the time being. However, there remains a strong chance that he'll make his big-league debut at some point this season.
May 12, 2021
Shut down with shoulder issue
Gray has been shut down from throwing due to a shoulder impingement, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old was scratched from his start for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday, and he'll now be shut down due to the shoulder issue. Gray likely will be sidelined into June since he'll need to build his arm back up once he resumes a throwing program.
May 12, 2021
Scratched from Triple-A start
Gray was scratched minutes before his scheduled start Tuesday for Triple-A Oklahoma City for unclear reasons, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports. "When a starter, certainly a top prospect is scratched from a start, we've got to do some testing, and I don't know if we've done that yet," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.
ANALYSIS
Roberts was vague about the circumstances behind Gray's scratch, but the skipper seemed to hint that the 23-year-old right-hander was pulled off the start due to an injury or for COVID-19-related reasons rather than a potential call-up to the big leagues. For what it's worth, J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News reports that Roberts admitted the Dodgers discussed calling up to provide reinforcement for a banged-up rotation, but Roberts noted that the Los Angeles would have to "shelve [that idea] for a little bit" in light of Gray being scratched. Expect a clearer update on Gray's situation to come within the next couple of days.
May 4, 2021
Promotion not imminent
Gray will open the season at Triple-A Oklahoma City.
ANALYSIS
Brook Smith of Dodgersnation.com reports that manager Dave Roberts eschewed the idea of Gray getting the call to replace Dustin May (Tommy John surgery). A team with the Dodgers' talent and expectations isn't going to alter the developmental plan for one of its top prospects based on a need at the big-league level. Tony Gonsolin (shoulder) and David Price (hamstring) are just as likely to get healthy in time to take the fifth starter's spot as Gray is to impress enough in the short term at Triple-A to get the call this month.
Feb 16, 2021
Invited to big-league camp
Gray was invited to the Dodgers' big-league camp Tuesday, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Dodgers' depth means Gray isn't a favorite to win an Opening Day roster spot, but his arrival may not be too far off. He reached Double-A in 2019, recording a 2.75 ERA in 39.1 innings, and while the canceled minor-league season prevented him from continuing his climb last season, he was part of the Dodgers' roster pool and was even reportedly considered for a spot start at one point due to Alex Wood's shoulder troubles.
Jul 29, 2020
Named candidate to start Friday
Gray is an option to start Friday against Arizona, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Dodgers are in need of a starter for Friday's road contest due to Alex Wood's (shoulder) placement on the 10-day injured list, and manager Dave Roberts mentioned Gray as one of our candidates to fill the role. Gray has yet to pitch beyond Double-A, but he has impressed while moving rapidly through three minor-league levels in his two seasons as a professional.
Jul 17, 2020
Tosses four innings
Gray threw four innings in Thursday's intrasquad game, giving up one run on two hits and one walk while striking out four, Kyle Glaser of Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
He sat 94-96 mph with his fastball and landed some nice sliders for strikes against a lineup mostly populated by big leaguers. Gray is the Dodgers' second-best pitching prospect (behind Dustin May) and has a bright future in the majors. However, given the team's impressive pitching depth, Gray doesn't project to enter the rotation until sometime in 2021.
