The star third baseman is now slashing .287/.380/.588 with nine home runs, 20 extra-base hits and 37 RBI. However, he's hit just two homers with a .211 average through 15 contests in May.

Ramirez's career average of 25 steals per 162 games is a better indicator of his capabilities, though it's a real possibility that he's slowing down with age.

Now locked up with a long-term contract with the Guardians, the 29-year-old appears to be setting the groundwork for another MVP-caliber season in 2022.

Ramirez and the Guardians agreed to terms Thursday on a five-year, $124 million contract extension, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. The deal includes a full no-trade clause.

Ramirez will still be paid $11 million in 2022 and will automatically have his existing $13 million team option for 2023 picked up as part of the extension, which won't go into effect until the 2024 season. Though Ramirez may not be able to justify a nearly $25 million salary in his age-36 season during the final year of the deal, he's already more than overdelivered on the five-year, $26 million extension he signed with Cleveland in March 2017. In the five seasons since that deal, Ramirez has produced a collective 139 wRC+ while playing 150-plus games in three of those four years, not counting the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign. His averages are all down from 2020 and his OPS is more than 100 points off last year's, but he still is producing solid numbers and remains on of the top players in the American League and one of the top third basemen in baseball.
