Akin (back) avoided arbitration with the Orioles on Friday, signing a one-year, $825,000 contract, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

Akin missed the second half of the 2023 season due to a lingering back injury and posted an ugly 6.85 ERA in 23.2 innings when healthy, but the O's clearly believe he'll be able to return to form next year. The left-hander delivered a 3.20 ERA and 77:20 K:BB over 81.2 innings as a bullpen workhorse for Baltimore in 2022.

Akin (back) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Wednesday, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.

The move was made in order to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Austin Voth, who is making his return from the 60-day IL. Akin made a rehab appearance back on Aug. 3 but hasn't pitched since, so it would appear he suffered a setback. He's already missed nearly two months of action with a nagging back issue.

Akin (back) joined up with Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday to continue his minor-league rehab assignment, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Akin surrendered three earned runs in just one inning of work Monday in his rehab debut in the Florida Complex League, but he is discomfort-free following a month-long absence from live competition to heal a lower-back injury. The 28-year-old left-hander could return to Baltimore's bullpen mix by early next week.

Friday marks the first time Akin has thrown since landing on the injured list June 30 with lower back discomfort. There's still no clear timeline for Akin's return, though a return before the end of July may still be possible.

Akin was brought in for the top of the 10th inning and couldn't complete the frame. His performance has taken a drastic downturn over the last week -- he's allowed 13 runs (10 earned) over four innings across his last four appearances. The slump has him at a 6.85 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 27:7 K:BB through 23.2 innings on the year. If Akin can't get back on track soon, he could find himself optioned out to Triple-A Norfolk.

Akin (2-1) allowed a hit and struck out one over 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the win Thursday over the Brewers.

The Orioles rallied ahead in the eighth inning with Akin in the game, giving him his first win since April 23. The southpaw has been alright as a middle reliever, allowing a run on seven hits with a 5:1 K:BB over his last 5.1 inning since he was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk in late May. He's at a 4.50 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 15:5 K:BB with three holds through 16 innings this season.

Akin will serve as the Orioles' opening pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Guardians, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.

Akin had made just one start for the Orioles since the beginning of the 2022 season, but he'll serve as the team's lead pitcher Wednesday after he made a pair of scoreless relief appearances upon returning from Triple-A Norfolk over the weekend. Since Akin hasn't covered more than three innings in any of his appearances in the majors or minors this season, he's unlikely to work more than once through the batting order before turning the game over to Austin Voth, who is slated to work in bulk relief.

Akin will return to the big leagues after being sent down May 9, producing a 1.29 ERA and 0.14 WHIP with 13 strikeouts over seven innings in four appearances with Norfolk. It's unclear what role he'll be set for with the Orioles, but he will replace Grayson Rodriguez on the major-league roster after Rodriguez was optioned to Triple-A on Saturday. Akin has only made one start in the majors since 2021, though he could be used as an opener for Baltimore.

Akin (1-1) issued two intentional walks and struck out one in a scoreless and hitless inning to earn the extra-inning win over the Tigers on Sunday.

Akin issued intentional walks to right-handed hitters in Eric Haase and Spencer Torkelson, and the strategy paid off. The Orioles southpaw was able to get lefty hitters Zach McKinstry and Nick Maton out to end a bases-loaded threat before Baltimore won with Adam Frazier darting home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning. Akin has had his struggles in a low-leverage role, pitching to a 6.75 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and 5:2 K:BB across 5.1 innings. He also has one hold.

Akin was activated from the paternity leave list by the Orioles on Monday

The O's are off Monday, but Akin will be back in their bullpen for Tuesday's game against the Nationals. Spenser Watkins was sent down in a corresponding move.

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters before Sunday's game against the White Sox that Akin (personal) is expected to come off the paternity list Tuesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Akin will miss a total of three games while being away from the team. The left-hander will return to a middle-innings role in the Baltimore bullpen, and the team will need to send down a pitcher before the series against the Nationals begins.

The southpaw has typically filled a multi-inning role over the last two years, but he's recorded more than three outs in just one outing so far this season.

Manager Brandon Hyde has been impressed with Akin in spring training, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.

The numbers back up Hyde's feelings -- Akin has allowed two hits and a walk while striking out two over three innings across two Grapefruit League games. Hyde added that he wants to have several multi-inning relievers break camp with the Orioles, which indicates Akin has a good chance of being in that group. He covered 81.2 innings over 45 appearances (one start) in 2022, pitching to an excellent 3.20 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 77:20 K:BB.

The Orioles recalled Akin from Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday.

Akin and Beau Sulser were summoned from Norfolk to provide the Orioles with a pair of fresh relief arms after the bullpen covered 12.2 innings the past two days in the first two contests of a four-game set in Boston. Before being demoted to Triple-A on Monday, Akin had logged a 3.40 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 71:20 K:BB in 76.2 innings for Baltimore on the season.

After giving up three earned runs over just a third of an inning Sunday, Akin will spend some time in the minors. He was in the middle of a career year -- recording a 3.40 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 76.2 innings -- but he will be sent to Triple-A nonetheless. Logan Gillaspie will be promoted to replace Akin in the Orioles' bullpen.

Akin (3-3) took the loss in extra innings Sunday versus the Astros, allowing four runs (three earned) on a hit and two walks in one-third of an inning.

Akin couldn't control things in the 11th inning as the Astros pulled ahead by four runs. Two of the runs came with Akin on the mound, while Joey Krehbiel allowed a pair of inherited runners to score. Down the stretch, Akin has faded pretty badly, allowing 16 runs (10 earned) across 11.2 innings in his last nine appearances. He has a 3.40 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 71:20 K:BB with two saves and three holds in 76.2 innings overall.

Akin (3-2) took the loss in the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk over 2.1 innings. He struck out four.

After two scoreless frames, Toronto chased Akin from the game in the third en route to an 8-4 victory. The southpaw hasn't completed three innings in an appearance since Aug. 1 and his 42 pitches (26 pitches) was his biggest workload since June 27, so it wasn't a surprise Akin couldn't give the O's more length in his spot start. He'll return to a long relief role with a 2.86 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 66:17 K:BB through 72.1 innings on the season.

Akin is starting the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Although manager Brandon Hyde said after the first game of Monday's twin bill that Jordan Lyles (illness) would start, Akin warmed up with starting catcher Robinson Chirinos ahead of the nightcap and will ultimately take the mound for Game 2. Akin hasn't lasted longer than 3.2 innings in any of his appearances this season, so it's possible that he's used as an opener Monday.

Akin (3-1) pitched two perfect innings and struck out one to earn the win Saturday over the Athletics.

Akin escaped a one-out, bases-loaded jam he inherited from Austin Voth in the fourth inning. He stayed in for the fifth and got the first out of the sixth before giving way to Joey Krehbiel. Akin was solid in long relief early in the year, but he had a rough August, giving up 11 runs (six earned) across 11.2 innings, good for a 4.63 ERA and 1.46 WHIP. He's off to a better start in September, and he now has a 2.70 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 62:16 K:BB through 70 innings overall while adding two saves and three holds.

Akin recorded his second save of the season in Monday's 7-2 win over the Rangers, giving up one run on two hits over three innings while striking out three.

Aside from a solo shot by Nick Solak, Akin was in control over the final third of the game. The southpaw has thrived in a long relief role this season, posting a 2.43 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 50:13 K:BB over 59.1 innings while adding two wins and two holds to his saves total.

Akin (2-1) retired the only batter he faced via strikeout to earn the win in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Rays.

Akin got the last out of the top of the eighth inning, and the Orioles' offense rallied for the lead with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. The southpaw began the year as a long reliever, but three of his seven outings in July have been one inning or shorter. He owns a 2.44 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 46:13 K:BB through 55.1 innings in 26 outings this season, and he's added a save and two holds. Akin has yet to see much high-leverage work, though the recent usage pattern suggests that could change if he continues to pitch well.

Akin pitched a perfect inning in Saturday's 6-4 extra-innings win over the Rays.

Akin began the year with 19 straight appearances of two innings or longer, but three of his four outings in July have been shorter than two frames. He started to falter a bit in June, but he's managed to give up just one run in 5.2 innings in July. For the season, the southpaw has a 2.26 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 42:13 K:BB with a save, two holds and a 1-1 record through 51.2 innings in a long-relief role.

Akin earned a save against the Mariners on Monday, pitching 3.1 scoreless innings during which he allowed one hit and two walks while striking out three.

Akin entered the game in the sixth inning with Baltimore up by seven runs. His outing started off shakily, as he walked the first batter he saw before surrendering a double to Eugenio Suarez that allowed an inherited runner to score. Akin was much better after that, retiring 10 of the final 11 hitters he faced to notch his first career save. All 19 of Akin's outings this season have been at least two innings in length, and he has put together an impressive 2.35 ERA and 0.83 WHIP along with a 39:12 K:BB over 46 frames.

Akin (not injury related) was reinstated from the restricted list Friday.

Akin is presumably unvaccinated since he was unavailable for the Orioles' four-game series in Toronto, but he'll rejoin Baltimore's bullpen ahead of the team's home series against the Rays. The southpaw has been effective while serving mainly as a middle reliever this year, posting a 2.61 ERA and 0.87 WHIP in 38 innings over 16 appearances.

Akin was placed on the restricted list Monday ahead of the Orioles' four-game series in Toronto.

The timing of the move implies that Akin failed to meet the requirements to cross the Canadian border by declining to vaccinate himself against COVID-19. Rico Garcia was called up as a replacement player to take his place in the bullpen. Akin should be back in action when the Orioles return stateside to take on the Rays on Friday.

Dean Kremer went five-plus innings as the starter, while Akin provided some length out of the bullpen. All three hits Akin allowed were home runs -- a two-run shot to Hunter Dozier in the sixth inning and solo shots by Michael Taylor and Bobby Witt in the seventh. This was Akin's first outing since June 4, and he's allowed seven runs across his last 8.2 innings while recording just two strikeouts in that span. He's posted a 2.61 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 30:10 K:BB in 38 innings overall, but it appears his luck has started to even out after a remarkable first two months of the season. Prior to Sunday's appearance, he had given up just two homers all year.

Akin (1-1) took the loss in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader versus the Red Sox. He allowed two runs on two hits and a walk with one strikeout in 2.1 innings.

Akin provided some length after a 4.1-inning start from Jordan Lyles. The Red Sox were able to get to Akin, with Bobby Dalbec hammering a sixth-inning solo home run while Christian Arroyo added an RBI single in the seventh. This was just the third time in 13 outings Akin's allowed runs, though he's given up a pair in each of those appearances. He's at a solid 1.71 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 29:9 K:BB in 31.2 innings overall, working exclusively in a multi-inning bullpen role.

Akin threw 2.1 hitless innings Tuesday versus the Yankees. He struck out six and walked three.

Akin has typically had better control, but the six strikeouts marked a season high for the southpaw. He's been excellent since making the move full-time to the bullpen this year, posting a 1.23 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 28:8 K:BB across 29.1 innings. The southpaw has posted a 13-inning scoreless streak across his last five appearances.

Akin (1-0) earned the win Thursday versus the Cardinals. He allowed one hit, walked two and struck out four in 2.2 scoreless innings.

Akin followed Bryan Baker in what resembled a tandem to cover the first five innings of the Orioles' bullpen game. In all nine of his appearances this season, Akin's covered at least two innings, though he's yet to pitch more than three. He's been excellent in that role, posting a 1.71 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 17:4 K:BB across 21 innings. He won't have much appeal in fantasy, as he's neither starting nor seeing high-leverage chances in relief.

Akin is expected to be used in an extended relief appearance behind opener Bryan Baker in Thursday's game in St. Louis, Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports.

The Orioles are treating their series finale with the Cardinals as a bullpen day, with Baker likely to work 1-to-2 innings before bowing out of the contest. Akin is the most obvious candidate to eat innings behind Baker, given that the 27-year-old lefty is a former starter who has covered between two and three frames in all eight of his relief appearances on the season. However, since Akin will be pitching on three days' rest, the Orioles likely won't ask him to cover much more than three innings.

Akin tossed 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Red Sox.

Akin has covered at least two innings in each of his appearances this season, and he's only allowed runs once. The southpaw has been effective in a multi-inning role with a 1.26 ERA, 0.56 WHIP and 9:2 K:BB across 14.1 innings this season. Despite his profile as a starter coming up through the minors, he hasn't been considered for a number of openings in the Orioles' rotation yet since he's done so well as a bulk reliever.

Akin struck out three and allowed one hit in three shutout innings in Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Rays.

Akin worked in a multi-inning role behind starter Jordan Lyles, who took the loss Saturday. This was an expected appearance out of the bullpen for Akin, who failed to win a starting job in spring training. The southpaw was solid in this appearance -- more outings like Saturday's could allow him to challenge Dean Kremer or Tyler Wells for their spots in the rotation as the season progresses.

Akin allowed one run on three hits and a walk and struck out two in three innings versus the Pirates on Thursday.

Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports Akin and Tyler Wells could work as a pitching tandem early in the season as both look to get stretched out after a condensed spring training. Wells is already locked in for the rotation, but Akin would likely have more upside for vulturing wins in the early going. Of course, the Orioles aren't expected to be that competitive this season, so the upside is minimal. Akin posted a 6.63 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 82:40 K:BB in 95 innings last season, making 17 of his 24 appearances as a starter. Whether as a starter or a reliever, the southpaw would need to make significant strides to draw much fantasy interest.

Akin (hip) will start Monday's spring training game against the Twins, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Assuming he's back to full health for spring training, Akin will likely have to compete for a spot in the Baltimore rotation.

He's lined up to face the Red Sox in his next start Tuesday.

Akin (2-10) allowed four runs on six hits and three walks with no strikeouts in four-plus innings, taking the loss versus Boston on Friday.

The southpaw took a step back after a quality start in his last appearance. It was the second time in his last three outings he completed only four innings. Akin has struggled in his first full major-league season with a 6.93 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 76:39 K:BB across 89.2 innings. He's projected for a road start in Philadelphia next week.

Akin (2-9) allowed three earned runs on three hits on two walks while striking out three across six innings, taking the loss in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays.

Akin fired six shutout innings, but failed to record an out in the seventh frame. He allowed a two-run homer to Bo Bichette to spark an 11-run inning by the Blue Jays. The 26-year-old has still been solid over his last four starts, with a 3.68 ERA and 0.91 WHIP. On the season, he carries a 6.83 ERA and 1.58 WHIP with 76 strikeouts in 85.2 innings.

He's expected to remain in the rotation for the rest of the season, as Baltimore will evaluate some of its younger arms over the final month of the year. Akin projects for a tough matchup versus Toronto during next weekend's four-game series.

Akin (2-8) picked up the win in Tuesday's 4-2 victory over the Blue Jays, allowing one run on two hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out five.

Aside from a third-inning solo shot by Danny Jansen, Akin kept the dangerous Toronto lineup in check for 85 pitches (53 strikes). The 26-year-old southpaw seems to be turning his season around, posting a 2.65 ERA and 1.06 WHIP through 17 innings over his last three starts, but a 4.2 BB/9 and 2.1 HR/9 during that stretch suggest those strong ratios could be a mirage.

Akin (1-8) allowed one earned run on three hits and two walks while striking out six across seven innings to earn the win Thursday against the Angels.

Akin allowed a leadoff home run to Shohei Ohtani, but he otherwise dominated the Angels. It was his longest start of the season, and only the second time that he's surpassed five innings in any of his 12 starts on the campaign. The effort also ended a run of bad starts for Akin, as he entered this outing having allowed 12 earned runs across his last 12 innings. For the season, Akin has a 7.26 ERA with a 63:29 K:BB across 70.2 frames.

Akin (0-8) allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three in five innings to take the loss against Atlanta on Friday.

Although Akin tossed 3.1 scoreless innings across his first two relief appearances in August, he's struggled in his three starts since he rejoined the rotation. The southpaw has given up at least three runs in each of his last three starts, and he's been charged with losses in each of those outings. Since the All-Star break, Akin has posted an 8.84 ERA and 2.13 WHIP in 18.1 innings across six appearances (four starts). He tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Angels on Thursday.

Akin (0-7) allowed three runs on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts in four innings, taking the loss versus Boston on Sunday.

He could continue to hold a rotation spot, as Bruce Zimmermann suffered a sprained ankle in his rehab from a biceps injury. Akin tentatively lines up for a difficult home start versus Atlanta next weekend.

The Royals put at least one run on the board in each of Akin's three frames, and they crossed the plate four times in a big second inning. The southpaw needed 74 pitches to retire nine batters, and he has now given up at least four earned runs in each of his past seven outings. Given his 8.19 ERA, 1.80 WHIP and paltry 21.5 strikeout percentage, he doesn't carry much fantasy appeal. Akin is tentatively slated to next face Washington at home next Friday.

Akin has dropped each of his last four appearances and has allowed at least five earned runs in his last three contests, so he's been far from reliable when he steps on the mound. The southpaw owns an 8.61 ERA across five appearances this month, and he's scheduled to make his next start on the road against the Angels next week.

After beginning the season in the bullpen, Akin has now taken four consecutive turns through the rotation and allowed 12 earned runs across 19.1 innings while also racking up 17 strikeouts.

Akin has averaged 7.25 strikeouts per outing across his last four starts, something quite impressive considering he hasn't pitched more than 5.1 innings in any of those games. The ability to miss bats is clearly there and is also getting results, as he has allowed more than three earned runs just once all year long.

Akin (1-1) allowed three hits and one walk while striking out nine across five scoreless innings to earn the win Wednesday against Atlanta.

Akin held Atlanta's lineup in check through his effort, holding them without an extra-base hit. He also punched out a career-best nine batters on the strength of 19 swinging strikes across 93 total pitches. It's been a mixed bag for Akin through four career starts, as he's maintained a 3.38 ERA and struck out 25 batters across 18.2 frames. However, he's also struggled with his command, surrendering nine free passes in that span. He'll take his next turn through the rotation Tuesday at Boston.

Akin (0-1) took the loss in the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the Yankees, surrendering four runs on three hits and a walk over only two-thirds of an inning. He struck out one.

Both games in the twin bill started badly for the O's -- Alex Cobb gave up two homers before recording an out in the matinee, and then Akin couldn't get out of the first inning at all. The rookie southpaw had looked good in his first two big-league starts, but Friday's quick outing sent his ERA soaring to 4.61.

Akin won't start Thursday after the game against the Yankees was postponed.

Thursday's game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Friday. Whether Akin will start one of the games in the twin bill remains to be seen.
