Avoids arb with one-year pact
Akin (back) avoided arbitration with the Orioles on Friday, signing a one-year, $825,000 contract, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Akin missed the second half of the 2023 season due to a lingering back injury and posted an ugly 6.85 ERA in 23.2 innings when healthy, but the O's clearly believe he'll be able to return to form next year. The left-hander delivered a 3.20 ERA and 77:20 K:BB over 81.2 innings as a bullpen workhorse for Baltimore in 2022.
Aug 23, 2023
Transferred to 60-day IL
Akin (back) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Wednesday, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The move was made in order to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Austin Voth, who is making his return from the 60-day IL. Akin made a rehab appearance back on Aug. 3 but hasn't pitched since, so it would appear he suffered a setback. He's already missed nearly two months of action with a nagging back issue.
Aug 3, 2023
Rehab shifts to Triple-A
Akin (back) joined up with Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday to continue his minor-league rehab assignment, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akin surrendered three earned runs in just one inning of work Monday in his rehab debut in the Florida Complex League, but he is discomfort-free following a month-long absence from live competition to heal a lower-back injury. The 28-year-old left-hander could return to Baltimore's bullpen mix by early next week.
Jul 31, 2023
Beginning rehab assignment
Akin (back) reported to the Orioles' rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate Monday to begin a rehab assignment.
ANALYSIS
Akin has been on the IL since June 30 due to lower-back discomfort but has now advanced to the final stage of his rehab program. He'll likely make an appearance in the FCL on Monday before advancing to a higher-level affiliate later in the week. Once the Orioles deem Akin ready to return from the IL, he'll presumably be ticketed for a lower-leverage role out of the bullpen.
Jul 14, 2023
Resumes throwing
Akin (back) played catch Friday, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Friday marks the first time Akin has thrown since landing on the injured list June 30 with lower back discomfort. There's still no clear timeline for Akin's return, though a return before the end of July may still be possible.
Jun 30, 2023
Placed on 15-day IL
Akin was placed on the 15-day injured list with lower back discomfort Friday, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akin appears to have picked up a back injury when he last pitched Wednesday, getting charged with a loss after he tossed two-thirds of an inning, allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk while striking out two batters versus Cincinnati. He'll now be unavailable for at least a couple weeks while left-hander Nick Vespi was called up from Triple-A Norfolk to replace him on the major-league roster Friday.
Jun 29, 2023
Takes loss Wednesday
Akin (2-2) allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk while striking out two in two-thirds of an inning, taking the extra-inning loss versus the Reds on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Akin was brought in for the top of the 10th inning and couldn't complete the frame. His performance has taken a drastic downturn over the last week -- he's allowed 13 runs (10 earned) over four innings across his last four appearances. The slump has him at a 6.85 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 27:7 K:BB through 23.2 innings on the year. If Akin can't get back on track soon, he could find himself optioned out to Triple-A Norfolk.
Jun 8, 2023
Grabs second win
Akin (2-1) allowed a hit and struck out one over 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the win Thursday over the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
The Orioles rallied ahead in the eighth inning with Akin in the game, giving him his first win since April 23. The southpaw has been alright as a middle reliever, allowing a run on seven hits with a 5:1 K:BB over his last 5.1 inning since he was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk in late May. He's at a 4.50 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 15:5 K:BB with three holds through 16 innings this season.
May 31, 2023
Opening Wednesday's game
Akin will serve as the Orioles' opening pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Guardians, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akin had made just one start for the Orioles since the beginning of the 2022 season, but he'll serve as the team's lead pitcher Wednesday after he made a pair of scoreless relief appearances upon returning from Triple-A Norfolk over the weekend. Since Akin hasn't covered more than three innings in any of his appearances in the majors or minors this season, he's unlikely to work more than once through the batting order before turning the game over to Austin Voth, who is slated to work in bulk relief.
May 27, 2023
Called up Saturday
Akin was called up from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Akin will return to the big leagues after being sent down May 9, producing a 1.29 ERA and 0.14 WHIP with 13 strikeouts over seven innings in four appearances with Norfolk. It's unclear what role he'll be set for with the Orioles, but he will replace Grayson Rodriguez on the major-league roster after Rodriguez was optioned to Triple-A on Saturday. Akin has only made one start in the majors since 2021, though he could be used as an opener for Baltimore.
May 9, 2023
Optioned to Triple-A
The Orioles optioned Akin to Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Akin claimed a spot in the Baltimore bullpen out of camp this spring, but he'll head down to the farm after struggling to a 5.91 ERA and 1.78 WHIP through 13 appearances covering 10.2 innings. The 28-year-old lefty posted a sharp 3.20 ERA across 81.2 frames with the O's in 2022.
Apr 24, 2023
Snags extra-inning win
Akin (1-1) issued two intentional walks and struck out one in a scoreless and hitless inning to earn the extra-inning win over the Tigers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Akin issued intentional walks to right-handed hitters in Eric Haase and Spencer Torkelson, and the strategy paid off. The Orioles southpaw was able to get lefty hitters Zach McKinstry and Nick Maton out to end a bases-loaded threat before Baltimore won with Adam Frazier darting home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning. Akin has had his struggles in a low-leverage role, pitching to a 6.75 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and 5:2 K:BB across 5.1 innings. He also has one hold.
Apr 17, 2023
Returns from paternity leave
Akin was activated from the paternity leave list by the Orioles on Monday
ANALYSIS
The O's are off Monday, but Akin will be back in their bullpen for Tuesday's game against the Nationals. Spenser Watkins was sent down in a corresponding move.
Apr 16, 2023
Expected back Tuesday
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters before Sunday's game against the White Sox that Akin (personal) is expected to come off the paternity list Tuesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akin will miss a total of three games while being away from the team. The left-hander will return to a middle-innings role in the Baltimore bullpen, and the team will need to send down a pitcher before the series against the Nationals begins.
Apr 13, 2023
Placed on paternity list
Akin was placed on the paternity list Thursday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akin has appeared in six games out of the bullpen this season and has allowed four earned runs as well as eight hits across 4.1 innings. He'll be away from the team for at least Friday's game against the White Sox, though he could miss the entire weekend series.
Apr 13, 2023
Charged with loss
Akin (0-1) allowed two runs on three hits and struck out two in two-thirds of an inning, taking the loss Wednesday versus the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Akin was able to work around a one-out single to get the last two outs in the seventh inning, but he put two runners on base in the eighth. Cionel Perez struggled to get through that frame, and Akin was charged with the loss, his first decision in six appearances. He's allowed four runs over 4.1 innings while adding four strikeouts and no walks through six appearances. The southpaw has typically filled a multi-inning role over the last two years, but he's recorded more than three outs in just one outing so far this season.
Mar 9, 2023
Impressing in spring
Manager Brandon Hyde has been impressed with Akin in spring training, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
The numbers back up Hyde's feelings -- Akin has allowed two hits and a walk while striking out two over three innings across two Grapefruit League games. Hyde added that he wants to have several multi-inning relievers break camp with the Orioles, which indicates Akin has a good chance of being in that group. He covered 81.2 innings over 45 appearances (one start) in 2022, pitching to an excellent 3.20 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 77:20 K:BB.
Sep 28, 2022
Makes return to big leagues
The Orioles recalled Akin from Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Akin and Beau Sulser were summoned from Norfolk to provide the Orioles with a pair of fresh relief arms after the bullpen covered 12.2 innings the past two days in the first two contests of a four-game set in Boston. Before being demoted to Triple-A on Monday, Akin had logged a 3.40 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 71:20 K:BB in 76.2 innings for Baltimore on the season.
Sep 26, 2022
Shipped to Triple-A
Akin was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Monday.
ANALYSIS
After giving up three earned runs over just a third of an inning Sunday, Akin will spend some time in the minors. He was in the middle of a career year -- recording a 3.40 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 76.2 innings -- but he will be sent to Triple-A nonetheless. Logan Gillaspie will be promoted to replace Akin in the Orioles' bullpen.
Sep 25, 2022
Takes loss Sunday
Akin (3-3) took the loss in extra innings Sunday versus the Astros, allowing four runs (three earned) on a hit and two walks in one-third of an inning.
ANALYSIS
Akin couldn't control things in the 11th inning as the Astros pulled ahead by four runs. Two of the runs came with Akin on the mound, while Joey Krehbiel allowed a pair of inherited runners to score. Down the stretch, Akin has faded pretty badly, allowing 16 runs (10 earned) across 11.2 innings in his last nine appearances. He has a 3.40 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 71:20 K:BB with two saves and three holds in 76.2 innings overall.
Sep 6, 2022
Hit with loss in Monday's nightcap
Akin (3-2) took the loss in the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk over 2.1 innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
After two scoreless frames, Toronto chased Akin from the game in the third en route to an 8-4 victory. The southpaw hasn't completed three innings in an appearance since Aug. 1 and his 42 pitches (26 pitches) was his biggest workload since June 27, so it wasn't a surprise Akin couldn't give the O's more length in his spot start. He'll return to a long relief role with a 2.86 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 66:17 K:BB through 72.1 innings on the season.
Sep 5, 2022
Starting Monday's nightcap
Akin is starting the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Although manager Brandon Hyde said after the first game of Monday's twin bill that Jordan Lyles (illness) would start, Akin warmed up with starting catcher Robinson Chirinos ahead of the nightcap and will ultimately take the mound for Game 2. Akin hasn't lasted longer than 3.2 innings in any of his appearances this season, so it's possible that he's used as an opener Monday.
Sep 3, 2022
Snares third win
Akin (3-1) pitched two perfect innings and struck out one to earn the win Saturday over the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Akin escaped a one-out, bases-loaded jam he inherited from Austin Voth in the fourth inning. He stayed in for the fifth and got the first out of the sixth before giving way to Joey Krehbiel. Akin was solid in long relief early in the year, but he had a rough August, giving up 11 runs (six earned) across 11.2 innings, good for a 4.63 ERA and 1.46 WHIP. He's off to a better start in September, and he now has a 2.70 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 62:16 K:BB through 70 innings overall while adding two saves and three holds.
Aug 2, 2022
Racks up three-inning save
Akin recorded his second save of the season in Monday's 7-2 win over the Rangers, giving up one run on two hits over three innings while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
Aside from a solo shot by Nick Solak, Akin was in control over the final third of the game. The southpaw has thrived in a long relief role this season, posting a 2.43 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 50:13 K:BB over 59.1 innings while adding two wins and two holds to his saves total.
Jul 27, 2022
Snags second win
Akin (2-1) retired the only batter he faced via strikeout to earn the win in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Akin got the last out of the top of the eighth inning, and the Orioles' offense rallied for the lead with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. The southpaw began the year as a long reliever, but three of his seven outings in July have been one inning or shorter. He owns a 2.44 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 46:13 K:BB through 55.1 innings in 26 outings this season, and he's added a save and two holds. Akin has yet to see much high-leverage work, though the recent usage pattern suggests that could change if he continues to pitch well.
Jul 17, 2022
Clean inning Saturday
Akin pitched a perfect inning in Saturday's 6-4 extra-innings win over the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Akin began the year with 19 straight appearances of two innings or longer, but three of his four outings in July have been shorter than two frames. He started to falter a bit in June, but he's managed to give up just one run in 5.2 innings in July. For the season, the southpaw has a 2.26 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 42:13 K:BB with a save, two holds and a 1-1 record through 51.2 innings in a long-relief role.
Jun 28, 2022
Notches save in long relief
Akin earned a save against the Mariners on Monday, pitching 3.1 scoreless innings during which he allowed one hit and two walks while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
Akin entered the game in the sixth inning with Baltimore up by seven runs. His outing started off shakily, as he walked the first batter he saw before surrendering a double to Eugenio Suarez that allowed an inherited runner to score. Akin was much better after that, retiring 10 of the final 11 hitters he faced to notch his first career save. All 19 of Akin's outings this season have been at least two innings in length, and he has put together an impressive 2.35 ERA and 0.83 WHIP along with a 39:12 K:BB over 46 frames.
Jun 17, 2022
Reinstated from restricted list
Akin (not injury related) was reinstated from the restricted list Friday.
ANALYSIS
Akin is presumably unvaccinated since he was unavailable for the Orioles' four-game series in Toronto, but he'll rejoin Baltimore's bullpen ahead of the team's home series against the Rays. The southpaw has been effective while serving mainly as a middle reliever this year, posting a 2.61 ERA and 0.87 WHIP in 38 innings over 16 appearances.
Jun 13, 2022
Placed on restricted list
Akin was placed on the restricted list Monday ahead of the Orioles' four-game series in Toronto.
ANALYSIS
The timing of the move implies that Akin failed to meet the requirements to cross the Canadian border by declining to vaccinate himself against COVID-19. Rico Garcia was called up as a replacement player to take his place in the bullpen. Akin should be back in action when the Orioles return stateside to take on the Rays on Friday.
Jun 12, 2022
Yields season-high three runs
Akin surrendered three runs on three hits in 2.1 innings in Sunday's 10-7 win over the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Dean Kremer went five-plus innings as the starter, while Akin provided some length out of the bullpen. All three hits Akin allowed were home runs -- a two-run shot to Hunter Dozier in the sixth inning and solo shots by Michael Taylor and Bobby Witt in the seventh. This was Akin's first outing since June 4, and he's allowed seven runs across his last 8.2 innings while recording just two strikeouts in that span. He's posted a 2.61 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 30:10 K:BB in 38 innings overall, but it appears his luck has started to even out after a remarkable first two months of the season. Prior to Sunday's appearance, he had given up just two homers all year.
May 28, 2022
Handed first loss Saturday
Akin (1-1) took the loss in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader versus the Red Sox. He allowed two runs on two hits and a walk with one strikeout in 2.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Akin provided some length after a 4.1-inning start from Jordan Lyles. The Red Sox were able to get to Akin, with Bobby Dalbec hammering a sixth-inning solo home run while Christian Arroyo added an RBI single in the seventh. This was just the third time in 13 outings Akin's allowed runs, though he's given up a pair in each of those appearances. He's at a solid 1.71 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 29:9 K:BB in 31.2 innings overall, working exclusively in a multi-inning bullpen role.
May 25, 2022
Continues to thrive in long relief
Akin threw 2.1 hitless innings Tuesday versus the Yankees. He struck out six and walked three.
ANALYSIS
Akin has typically had better control, but the six strikeouts marked a season high for the southpaw. He's been excellent since making the move full-time to the bullpen this year, posting a 1.23 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 28:8 K:BB across 29.1 innings. The southpaw has posted a 13-inning scoreless streak across his last five appearances.
May 13, 2022
Earns win Thursday
Akin (1-0) earned the win Thursday versus the Cardinals. He allowed one hit, walked two and struck out four in 2.2 scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
Akin followed Bryan Baker in what resembled a tandem to cover the first five innings of the Orioles' bullpen game. In all nine of his appearances this season, Akin's covered at least two innings, though he's yet to pitch more than three. He's been excellent in that role, posting a 1.71 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 17:4 K:BB across 21 innings. He won't have much appeal in fantasy, as he's neither starting nor seeing high-leverage chances in relief.
May 12, 2022
Likely to work behind Bryan Baker
Akin is expected to be used in an extended relief appearance behind opener Bryan Baker in Thursday's game in St. Louis, Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Orioles are treating their series finale with the Cardinals as a bullpen day, with Baker likely to work 1-to-2 innings before bowing out of the contest. Akin is the most obvious candidate to eat innings behind Baker, given that the 27-year-old lefty is a former starter who has covered between two and three frames in all eight of his relief appearances on the season. However, since Akin will be pitching on three days' rest, the Orioles likely won't ask him to cover much more than three innings.
Apr 30, 2022
Working well in relief
Akin tossed 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Akin has covered at least two innings in each of his appearances this season, and he's only allowed runs once. The southpaw has been effective in a multi-inning role with a 1.26 ERA, 0.56 WHIP and 9:2 K:BB across 14.1 innings this season. Despite his profile as a starter coming up through the minors, he hasn't been considered for a number of openings in the Orioles' rotation yet since he's done so well as a bulk reliever.
Apr 9, 2022
Tosses three scoreless innings
Akin struck out three and allowed one hit in three shutout innings in Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Akin worked in a multi-inning role behind starter Jordan Lyles, who took the loss Saturday. This was an expected appearance out of the bullpen for Akin, who failed to win a starting job in spring training. The southpaw was solid in this appearance -- more outings like Saturday's could allow him to challenge Dean Kremer or Tyler Wells for their spots in the rotation as the season progresses.
Apr 1, 2022
Likely to work in tandem role
Akin allowed one run on three hits and a walk and struck out two in three innings versus the Pirates on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports Akin and Tyler Wells could work as a pitching tandem early in the season as both look to get stretched out after a condensed spring training. Wells is already locked in for the rotation, but Akin would likely have more upside for vulturing wins in the early going. Of course, the Orioles aren't expected to be that competitive this season, so the upside is minimal. Akin posted a 6.63 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 82:40 K:BB in 95 innings last season, making 17 of his 24 appearances as a starter. Whether as a starter or a reliever, the southpaw would need to make significant strides to draw much fantasy interest.
Mar 20, 2022
Taking mound Monday
Akin (hip) will start Monday's spring training game against the Twins, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akin underwent a hip procedure early in the offseason, but it doesn't appear it will affect his availability for the start of the season. The 26-year-old struggled in 24 appearances (17 starts) for the Orioles in 2021 with a 6.63 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 82:40 K:BB over 95 innings.
Nov 15, 2021
Recovering from hip procedure
The Orioles announced Monday that Akin underwent a hip adductor repair procedure earlier in the offseason, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The procedure is viewed as a minor one, as the 26-year-old lefty is expected to resume a normal offseason training program within the next few weeks. Before he was shut down for the final two weeks of the regular season due to the left adductor strain, Akin started in 17 of his 24 appearances for Baltimore and submitted a 6.63 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 82:40 K:BB across 95 innings. Assuming he's back to full health for spring training, Akin will likely have to compete for a spot in the Baltimore rotation.
Sep 28, 2021
Shifts to 60-day injured list
Akin (abdomen) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Akin was already shut down for the season Friday, as he hit the injured list with a left adductor strain and also requires abdominal surgery. He'll hit the 60-day injured list to clear a spot for Bruce Zimmerman, who returned from an ankle injury in a corresponding move.
Sep 24, 2021
Done for season
Akin was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with a left adductor strain.
ANALYSIS
Akin lined up for two more starts during the final week of the regular season, but he'll instead be shut down and is scheduled to undergo surgery during the offseason, per Joe Trezza of MLB.com. The left-hander doesn't have a specific timeline for his recovery but is expected to be ready for spring training in February. The 26-year-old finished 2021 with a 6.63 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 82:40 K:BB over 95 innings.
Sep 22, 2021
Pitches into sixth
Akin surrendered one run on five hits and a walk while striking out six in Wednesday's loss to the Phillies. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old pitched well in this one, with his only run coming after he was pulled from the game. Andrew McCutchen launched a home run off of Eric Hanhold and scored Bryce Harper who Akin allowed to reach before exiting. The outing snapped a seven-start streak of giving up a home run for the lefty and the one walk was his lowest amount allowed since Aug. 10. He's lined up to face the Red Sox in his next start Tuesday.
Sep 18, 2021
Takes 10th loss
Akin (2-10) allowed four runs on six hits and three walks with no strikeouts in four-plus innings, taking the loss versus Boston on Friday.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw took a step back after a quality start in his last appearance. It was the second time in his last three outings he completed only four innings. Akin has struggled in his first full major-league season with a 6.93 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 76:39 K:BB across 89.2 innings. He's projected for a road start in Philadelphia next week.
Sep 12, 2021
Takes loss despite quality start
Akin (2-9) allowed three earned runs on three hits on two walks while striking out three across six innings, taking the loss in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Akin fired six shutout innings, but failed to record an out in the seventh frame. He allowed a two-run homer to Bo Bichette to spark an 11-run inning by the Blue Jays. The 26-year-old has still been solid over his last four starts, with a 3.68 ERA and 0.91 WHIP. On the season, he carries a 6.83 ERA and 1.58 WHIP with 76 strikeouts in 85.2 innings.
Sep 11, 2021
Starting Game 2 Saturday
Akin will start Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He will pitch opposite Ross Stripling in the nightcap while Dean Kremer starts Game 1. Akin has a 4.32 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 21 strikeouts in 25 innings over his last five starts.
Sep 5, 2021
No-decision versus Yankees
Akin allowed four runs on three hits and two walks while striking out five in four innings in a no-decision versus the Yankees on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
After winning his last two starts, Sunday's outing was a bit of a disappointment for Akin, but he was able to avoid the loss as Baltimore pulled ahead in the seventh inning. The southpaw has a 7.00 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 73:34 K:BB through 79.2 innings this year. He's expected to remain in the rotation for the rest of the season, as Baltimore will evaluate some of its younger arms over the final month of the year. Akin projects for a tough matchup versus Toronto during next weekend's four-game series.
Sep 1, 2021
Collects second win
Akin (2-8) picked up the win in Tuesday's 4-2 victory over the Blue Jays, allowing one run on two hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Aside from a third-inning solo shot by Danny Jansen, Akin kept the dangerous Toronto lineup in check for 85 pitches (53 strikes). The 26-year-old southpaw seems to be turning his season around, posting a 2.65 ERA and 1.06 WHIP through 17 innings over his last three starts, but a 4.2 BB/9 and 2.1 HR/9 during that stretch suggest those strong ratios could be a mirage.
Aug 27, 2021
Dominate Angels
Akin (1-8) allowed one earned run on three hits and two walks while striking out six across seven innings to earn the win Thursday against the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Akin allowed a leadoff home run to Shohei Ohtani, but he otherwise dominated the Angels. It was his longest start of the season, and only the second time that he's surpassed five innings in any of his 12 starts on the campaign. The effort also ended a run of bad starts for Akin, as he entered this outing having allowed 12 earned runs across his last 12 innings. For the season, Akin has a 7.26 ERA with a 63:29 K:BB across 70.2 frames.
Aug 21, 2021
Allows three runs in loss
Akin (0-8) allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three in five innings to take the loss against Atlanta on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Although Akin tossed 3.1 scoreless innings across his first two relief appearances in August, he's struggled in his three starts since he rejoined the rotation. The southpaw has given up at least three runs in each of his last three starts, and he's been charged with losses in each of those outings. Since the All-Star break, Akin has posted an 8.84 ERA and 2.13 WHIP in 18.1 innings across six appearances (four starts). He tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Angels on Thursday.
Aug 15, 2021
Dealt another loss
Akin (0-7) allowed three runs on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts in four innings, taking the loss versus Boston on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw allowed nine baserunners, but he only had to pay for all that traffic when J.D. Martinez hit a three-run home run in the first inning. Akin continues to struggle whether starting or coming out of the bullpen -- he has an 8.13 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and 54:24 K:BB in 58.2 innings. He could continue to hold a rotation spot, as Bruce Zimmermann suffered a sprained ankle in his rehab from a biceps injury. Akin tentatively lines up for a difficult home start versus Atlanta next weekend.
Aug 15, 2021
Gets another start
Akin is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Red Sox, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akin initially worked out of the bullpen when he was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Aug. 1, but he was moved into the rotation last week when Alexander Wells was demoted to Triple-A Norfolk. While picking up his ninth start of the season Tuesday versus the Tigers, Akin lasted only three innings while giving up six runs, inflating his season ERA to 8.23. Barring a dramatic turnaround Sunday versus a tough Boston offense, Akin likely won't be long for the Baltimore rotation, especially with Bruce Zimmermann (biceps/ankle) expected to return from the injured list in the near future.
Aug 11, 2021
Poor outing in loss
Akin (0-6) allowed six runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out five in three innings as he took the loss versus Detroit on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw's first start since July 16 didn't go very well, as he allowed four extra-base hits that generated runs. Akin has done somewhat better in a relief role, but he has an 8.23 ERA and 1.79 WHIP through 54.2 innings overall. It's unclear if he'll stay in the rotation -- Baltimore has had trouble from the fifth starter spot -- but if he gets another turn, it would likely be in a challenging road venue in Boston this weekend.
Aug 8, 2021
Gets Tuesday starting nod
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Akin is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Tigers, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After Alexander Wells was demoted to Triple-A Norfolk following a brutal outing against the Yankees on Tuesday, the writing was on the wall for Akin to rejoin the rotation. Though he shined in long relief of Wells -- he tossed three scoreless innings and allowed only baserunner -- Akin had posted an 8.14 ERA and 1.83 WHIP in 48.2 innings with the big club. Even in AL-only leagues, Akin makes for a risky starting option for fantasy managers looking to preserve their ratios.
Aug 4, 2021
Rejoining rotation next week
Akin will rejoin the Orioles starting rotation sometime next week, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He'll take the spot of Alexander Wells, who was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk after starting Tuesday. Baltimore has scheduled off days Thursday and Monday, so Akin's return to the rotation could be pushed until late next week. The left-hander may continue to be available out of the bullpen until the team determines exactly when his next start will be.
Aug 1, 2021
Works out of bullpen in return
Akin came on in relief and retired one of the three batters he faced but wasn't charged with an earned run in Sunday's 6-2 loss to the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
Before landing on the COVID-19 injured list July 21, Akin had filled a spot in the Baltimore rotation, but he looks like he'll work out of the bullpen for the time being while Alexander Wells and Spenser Watkins are evaluated for starting duties. Akin entered Sunday with a 8.19 ERA and 1.80 WHIP on the season, and he didn't do anything in his relief appearance to make the Orioles eager to add him back into the rotation. He allowed both of his inherited runners to score on a pair of base hits, but Akin was spared of any damage to his ERA when Shaun Anderson came on to record the final out of the seventh inning while leaving the bases loaded.
Aug 1, 2021
Comes off IL
The Orioles activated Akin from the COVID-19 injured list Sunday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Brandon Hyde hasn't clarified what Akin's role will look like after he was on the shelf for 10 days while waiting to clear COVID-19 health and safety protocols, but the 26-year-old lefty will most likely work out of the bullpen for now. According to Joe Trezza of MLB.com, Akin isn't listed among the Orioles' probable starters for the team's upcoming three-game series with the Yankees, suggesting that Alexander Wells and Spenser Watkins will hold down the back-end spots in the rotation.
Jul 31, 2021
Sunday activation expected
The Orioles plan to activate Akin (COVID-19) on Sunday, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akin was eligible to return Wednesday, but he has required a bit of work to get back in pitching shape. Manager Brandon Hyde said the lefty will pitch out of Baltimore's bullpen going forward.
Jul 28, 2021
Throwing side session Wednesday
Akin (COVID-19 IL) will throw a side session Wednesday after he cleared the league's health and safety protocols, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Akin spent a week on the COVID-19 injured list and is now eligible to rejoin the Orioles, but they'll bring him along slowly since he wasn't able to do much recently. Depending on the outcome of Wednesday's side session, the southpaw could build back up to start on the road against the Yankees early next week.
Jul 21, 2021
Won't start Wednesday
Akin was placed on the injured list for an unspecified reason Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old was slated to serve as the starting pitcher in Wednesday's series finale against the Rays, but left-hander Alexander Wells will take his place after he was recalled as part of a corresponding move. If Akin has been placed on the COVID-19 injured list, he'll be eligible to return once he clears the league's health and safety protocols as long as he hasn't tested positive for the virus.
Jul 17, 2021
Shelled in short start
Akin (0-5) took the loss against Kansas City on Friday, completing three innings and allowing six runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out two.
ANALYSIS
The Royals put at least one run on the board in each of Akin's three frames, and they crossed the plate four times in a big second inning. The southpaw needed 74 pitches to retire nine batters, and he has now given up at least four earned runs in each of his past seven outings. Given his 8.19 ERA, 1.80 WHIP and paltry 21.5 strikeout percentage, he doesn't carry much fantasy appeal. Akin is tentatively slated to next face Washington at home next Friday.
Jul 11, 2021
Works in long relief
Akin allowed four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out six in 4.1 innings during Saturday's loss to the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
After his expected appearance Thursday was rained out, Akin became available out of the bullpen leading into the All-Star break. The southpaw was called upon after starter Thomas Eshelman ran into trouble in the third inning Saturday. Akin then allowed a pair of runs in both the fifth and seventh innings, resulting in a so-so performance. Through 45.1 innings this year, the 26-year-old has a 7.54 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 44:17 K:BB. He may start the second half in the rotation, but he's hardly been successful as either a starter or bulk reliever this year.
Jul 8, 2021
Thursday's game postponed
Akin won't serve as the primary pitcher Thursday versus the Blue Jays since the game was postponed due to rain, joe reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander was slated to follow opener Dillon Tate, but the postponement will lead to an unplanned off day for both teams. According to Joe Trezza of MLB.com, Baltimore won't alter it's pitching plans for this weekend against the White Sox despite the schedule change, so Akin should be available out of the bullpen for the final three games before the All-Star break.
Jul 8, 2021
Bulk role on tap Thursday
Akin will follow opener Dillon Tate as the primary pitcher Thursday against the Blue Jays, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akin has a 12.18 ERA and 2.18 WHIP over 17 frames in his past four starts, so manager Brandon Hyde will utilize him behind an opener in hopes of better results. Assuming the left-hander pitches better Thursday, he should have a better chance of qualifying for a victory since he won't need to last a full five innings.
Jul 8, 2021
Won't start Thursday
Akin won't start Thursday's game against the Blue Jays, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw was initially listed as the starter for Thursday's matchup, but the Orioles now plan to use Dillon Tate as an opener. As long as Akin isn't hurt, he could presumably be available to serve as the primary pitcher against Toronto. Across his last four appearances, the 26-year-old has posted a 12.18 ERA and 2.18 WHIP in 17 innings.
Jul 3, 2021
Coughs up four runs
Akin yielded four runs on seven hits and a walk over three innings in Friday's loss to the Angels. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Most of the damage against Akin came via the long ball; he coughed up a two-run shot to Jose Iglesias in the second inning before serving up a solo homer to Shohei Ohtani in the third. The lone bright spot in Friday's outing is that he halted his four-start losing streak but his ERA shot up again to 7.46. In his seven starts this season, the 26-year-old lefty owns an unsightly 7.92 ERA. Akin is currently lined up to face the Blue Jays at home next week.
Jun 26, 2021
Woeful against Toronto
Akin (0-4) was tagged with the loss Saturday against the Blue Jays after allowing six runs on seven hits and a walk while fanning three across 4.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Akin has dropped each of his last four appearances and has allowed at least five earned runs in his last three contests, so he's been far from reliable when he steps on the mound. The southpaw owns an 8.61 ERA across five appearances this month, and he's scheduled to make his next start on the road against the Angels next week.
Jun 22, 2021
Roughed up in third straight loss
Akin (0-3) took the loss Monday against the Astros, allowing five runs on six hits and four walks across four-plus innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Akin's outing got off to a solid start, with the southpaw scattering a pair of hits and a walk across a scoreless first two innings. Things fell apart quickly in the third, however, with two hits and two walks setting up a three-run homer for Yordan Alvarez to put Houston up 5-0. He settled down for a scoreless fourth frame but was chased after allowing a leadoff single in the fifth. Since recording a solid scoreless outing June 4, Akin has allowed an unimpressive 16 earned runs on 19 hits during a three-start losing streak. He'll look to turn things around when he toes the rubber over the weekend against the Blue Jays in Buffalo.
Jun 17, 2021
Hit hard by Cleveland
Akin (0-2) allowed eight earned runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out seven across 5.2 innings to take the loss Wednesday against Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Akin suffered through a five-run third inning, when he allowed six baserunners -- five of which reached on hits. He managed to minimize the damage from there, though Matt Harvey allowed two inherited runners to score, further bloating Akin's line. More positively, Akin did strike out seven, a performance backed by 16 swinging strikes on 96 total pitches. After beginning the season in the bullpen, Akin has now taken four consecutive turns through the rotation and allowed 12 earned runs across 19.1 innings while also racking up 17 strikeouts.
Jun 11, 2021
Allows three runs in loss
Akin (0-1) yielded three runs on five hits and three walks over four innings Friday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Akin gave up a run on an RBI ground to Manuel Margot in the third inning but most of the damage came off Brandon Lowe's two-run blast in the fourth. It was his third straight start finishing at least four innings but his season ERA jumped to 4.13 ERA. Akin is projected to take the mound in Cleveland next week.
Jun 4, 2021
Settles for no-decision
Akin allowed three hits and one walk while striking out four in five scoreless innings in Friday's win over Cleveland. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Akin was dominant in his second consecutive start, but he didn't get any run support from the Orioles early in Friday's contest. The southpaw has allowed just one run in 9.2 innings across his last two starts, but he's had to settle for no-decisions in each appearance. If Akin gets another turn through the rotation, he tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against Tampa Bay on June 11.
Jun 4, 2021
Draws another start
Akin is slated to start Friday's game against Cleveland, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akin will be awarded a second turn through the Baltimore rotation after he limited the White Sox to one run over 4.2 innings in his first start of the season May 30. Over five outings in total with Baltimore, Akin maintains a 4.80 ERA, but a 3.59 FIP and 17.2 K-BB% suggest that he's pitched better than the ERA would imply.
May 30, 2021
Decent in no-decision
Akin allowed a run on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings versus the White Sox on Sunday. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw's lone run surrendered came on a Billy Hamilton solo home run in the third inning. Other than that, Akin was able to work around putting seven batters on base. The 26-year-old has a 4.80 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 14:2 K:BB across 15 innings. Sunday was his first start of the season, but he pitched well enough to get another look in a struggling Baltimore rotation.
May 26, 2021
Set to rejoin rotation
Akin will rejoin the starting rotation after Dean Kremer was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Kremer was initially listed as the starter Sunday's game against the White Sox, so Akin tentatively lines up to make his first start of the season Sunday. The southpaw has made four relief appearances to begin the year and has posted a 6.10 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 10.1 innings.
May 26, 2021
Tosses three innings
Akin allowed two runs on three hits and struck out three in three innings of Tuesday's 7-4 loss to Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw allowed an RBI double to Alex Kirilloff in the sixth inning and a solo home run to Rob Refsnyder in the eighth. Akin threw 29 of his 45 pitches for strikes. He's mostly logged multi-inning assignments out of the bullpen since joining Baltimore's big-league roster earlier in May. He hasn't found much success with a 6.10 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 10:1 K:BB across 10.1 innings in four appearances.
May 16, 2021
Works in long relief
Akin allowed three runs on four hits with one strikeouts in 3.1 innings in Saturday's 8-2 loss to the Yankees. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Starter Jorge Lopez only lasted two innings, so Akin was called upon for a long-relief assignment. In two appearances spanning 4.1 innings, he's struck out three batters and walked none. The 26-year-old was a starter in the minors, but he'll likely need to be stretched out at the major-league level since he dealt with a finger injury that impacted his availability in April.
May 10, 2021
Called up by Orioles
Akin was recalled by the Orioles on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Akin showed promise despite a mediocre 4.56 ERA in his 25.2-inning debut last season, as he combined a strong 30.2 percent strikeout rate with a roughly average 8.6 percent walk rate. He failed to make the team's Opening Day roster following a poor spring but is back with the team after making just a single Triple-A appearance. Six of Akin's eight appearances as a rookie came as a starter, but he'll fill a long-relief role for now, per Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com.
May 4, 2021
Ready to go for Triple-A season
Orioles director of player development Matt Blood said Akin (finger) would start Friday for Triple-A Norfolk, Dan Connolly of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
While he was gearing up for the minor-league season at the Orioles' alternate site in Bowie, Akin sustained a gash a cut on his left index finger that required stitches, but he appears to have bounced back quickly. He could face a limited pitch count in his 2021 debut Friday, but Akin should be an option to join the big club if the Orioles require another starter at some point this summer.
Apr 24, 2021
Receives stitches on finger
Akin recently received stitches on his left index finger after he cut himself with a knife at home, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akin was in consideration to start Saturday's matchup against Oakland, but he was unable to do so following his finger injury. Wade LeBlanc will instead take the mound for Baltimore to begin Saturday's game. Akin has been working at the Orioles' alternate training site to begin the season, and it's not yet clear when he'll be able to resume throwing.
Mar 26, 2021
Optioned to Triple-A
Akin was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Friday, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akin started six games for the Orioles last year but will begin the 2021 campaign in the minors. The southpaw made four appearances (two starts) for Baltimore this spring and allowed 10 runs on 15 hits and seven walks while striking out 14 in nine innings.
Sep 28, 2020
Yields four runs in no-decision.
Akin allowed four runs on five hits and a walk over three innings Sunday, striking out four in the win over Toronto. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Most of the damage against Akin came in the third inning where he allowed a pair of homers to Vladimir Guerrero and Lourdes Gurriel. After he left the game down 4-1, Baltimore's offense blew up for six runs in the fourth and fifth innings combined. Akin finishes the 2020 season with a 1-2 record and 4.56 ERA in 25.2 innings.
Sep 23, 2020
Gives up four runs in short start
Akin (1-2) was tagged with the loss Tuesday against the Red Sox. He allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits while fanning six across four innings.
ANALYSIS
Akin has averaged 7.25 strikeouts per outing across his last four starts, something quite impressive considering he hasn't pitched more than 5.1 innings in any of those games. The ability to miss bats is clearly there and is also getting results, as he has allowed more than three earned runs just once all year long.
Sep 16, 2020
Nine strikeouts in win
Akin (1-1) allowed three hits and one walk while striking out nine across five scoreless innings to earn the win Wednesday against Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Akin held Atlanta's lineup in check through his effort, holding them without an extra-base hit. He also punched out a career-best nine batters on the strength of 19 swinging strikes across 93 total pitches. It's been a mixed bag for Akin through four career starts, as he's maintained a 3.38 ERA and struck out 25 batters across 18.2 frames. However, he's also struggled with his command, surrendering nine free passes in that span. He'll take his next turn through the rotation Tuesday at Boston.
Sep 11, 2020
Early exit in nightcap
Akin (0-1) took the loss in the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the Yankees, surrendering four runs on three hits and a walk over only two-thirds of an inning. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Both games in the twin bill started badly for the O's -- Alex Cobb gave up two homers before recording an out in the matinee, and then Akin couldn't get out of the first inning at all. The rookie southpaw had looked good in his first two big-league starts, but Friday's quick outing sent his ERA soaring to 4.61.
Sep 10, 2020
Start vs. Yankees postponed
Akin won't start Thursday after the game against the Yankees was postponed.
ANALYSIS
Thursday's game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Friday. Whether Akin will start one of the games in the twin bill remains to be seen.
Sep 5, 2020
Strong in no-decision
Akin pitched 5.1 scoreless innings versus the Yankees on Saturday, allowing three hits and four walks while striking out eight. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Akin threw 91 pitches (57 strikes) in Saturday's game, locked in a pitchers' duel with Gerrit Cole. Unfortunately for Akin, the Orioles' bats didn't come alive until he was out of the game. He lowered his ERA to 2.08 with a 1.15 WHIP and 15 strikeouts across four appearances (two starts) spanning 13 innings. The 25-year-old lines up for a rematch with the Yankees on Friday in his next start.
Sep 2, 2020
Second start coming Saturday
Akin is scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Mets, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Akin will receive a second turn through the rotation after making his first MLB start in Monday's 4-3 win over the Blue Jays. He tossed 81 pitches in the outing, working 4.1 innings and surrendering three runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out six. Manager Brandon Hyde suggested earlier in the week that Akin would likely have his workload monitored carefully the rest of the season, so 25-year-old shouldn't be expected to see his pitch count increase much from Monday.
Aug 31, 2020
No-decision in first start
Akin allowed two unearned runs on three hits and two walks across 4.1 innings pitched in Monday's 4-3 win over the Blue Jays. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Akin was on a pitch count Monday and was only allowed to throw 81 pitches. Nonetheless, the rookie was solid in his first career start, fanning six while not allowing an earned run. Akin will look to qualify for the win when he toes the rubber Saturday against the Yankees.
Aug 31, 2020
Confirmed as starter Monday
Akin will start Monday's game against the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
As Jon Heyman of MLB Network suggested would be the case when Akin was called up Sunday, the lefty will step into the rotation Monday as a replacement for Tommy Milone, who was traded to the Braves over the weekend. The 2016 second-round pick has struck out more than a batter per inning at each minor-league stop, but finding the zone was an issue for him at Triple-A Norfolk last season, when he walked 12.1 percent of the batters he faced. Akin made his first two big-league appearances in relief this season, giving up three runs on two hits and a walk while striking out one in 3.1 innings. According to Joe Trezza of MLB.com, manager Brandon Hyde said Akin would be on an unspecified pitch count in his first start, and likely "for the rest of the year."
Aug 30, 2020
Rejoins big club, likely as starter
The Orioles recalled Akin from their alternate training site Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Though Akin was optioned to the alternate site Thursday, he'll be eligible to rejoin the big club before the minimum 10 days after Mychal Givens was traded to Colorado on Sunday. While Akin made his first two big-league appearances out of the bullpen, he'll likely be in line for a rotation assignment during his upcoming stint with Baltimore. After dealing away Tommy Milone to the Braves in a separate deal Sunday, Baltimore has an opening for a new starter in Monday's series finale with the Blue Jays in Buffalo, and Akin is expected to receive the nod, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.
Aug 27, 2020
Sent to alternate camp
Akin was optioned to Baltimore's alternate training site Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Akin spent just two days in the majors, retiring the only batter he faced in his lone appearance. He's an option to rejoin the big-league bullpen down the road. Jose Iglesias was activated from the injured list in a corresponding move.
Aug 25, 2020
Back in majors
Akin was recalled from the Orioles' alternate training site Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old southpaw logged a 4.73 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 131 strikeouts in 112.1 innings at Triple-A last year but gave up three runs in three innings in his first and only MLB outing earlier this year. With Wade LeBlanc (elbow) done for the year, Akin could get some starts or work as a long reliever going forward.
Aug 15, 2020
Optioned to alternate camp
Akin was optioned to the Orioles' alternate training site Friday.
ANALYSIS
Akin had a rough outing in Friday's loss to the Nationals as Baltimore's pitching staff was unable to quiet Washington's bats. The southpaw threw 48 pitches over three innings, 29 of which were strikes. He'll work on improving at the alternate training site, but he could rejoin the major-league bullpen at some point in 2020.
Aug 8, 2020
Recalled from alternate camp
Akin was recalled from the Orioles' alternate training site Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Akin will join the major-league roster for the first time after putting up solid results over four years in the minors. The southpaw served as a starter in the minor leagues, but he could take on a bullpen role with the Orioles for the time being. Over 24 starts with Triple-A Norfolk last season, Akin posted a 4.73 ERA and 131:61 K:BB over 112.1 innings.
Mar 10, 2020
Sent to Triple-A
Akin was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The Royals added Akin to the 40-man roster in November to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, but he was unable to secure a spot on the Opening Day roster. The 24-year-old had a 4.73 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 131:61 K:BB over 112.1 innings with Norfolk last season, and he could make his major-league debut at some point in 2020.
