Diagnosed with UCL, flexor damage
Waldichuk underwent a Tenex procedure on Oct. 17 and received a PRP injection on Oct. 24 after being diagnosed with a left UCL sprain and flexor strain.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk felt discomfort in his pitching elbow following his final start of the season back on Sept. 29 and an MRI and doctor visit revealed the bad news. The left-hander has opted for a conservative treatment rather than Tommy John surgery, with the minimally-invasive Tenex procedure designed to remove scar tissue and PRP injection aimed to promote healing. Waldichuk is currently limited to physical therapy and his timeline for a throwing program is up in the air.

Yields five runs
Waldichuk (4-9) allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks over five innings Friday, striking out three and taking a loss against the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk tossed three scoreless frames before the Angels plated three runs in the fourth inning. It was just the second time in his last 10 outings in which he gave up more than two earned runs. During that stretch, Waldichuk produced a 3.42 ERA and a 43:17 K:BB. He'll end the 2023 season with a 5.36 ERA and 132 punchouts over 141 frames.
Sep 23, 2023
Turns in quality start
Waldichuk (4-8) allowed two runs on four hits and struck out seven without walking a batter over six innings to earn the win over the Tigers on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk has two quality starts over four outings in September, and he also pitched six no-hit innings as a bulk reliever versus the Astros on Sept. 11. He's found some consistency with strong performances this month, lowering his ERA for the year to 5.29 with a 1.54 WHIP and 129:68 K:BB through 136 innings over 34 outings (21 starts). Waldichuk is likely set for one more appearance this season, which is tentatively scheduled to be on the road in Minnesota.
Sep 21, 2023
Slated to start Friday
Waldichuk is listed as the Athletics' starting pitcher for Friday's game against the Tigers in Oakland, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
In his most recent outing this past Sunday against the Padres, Waldichuik worked in tandem with starter Joe Boyle, with the former covering four innings to the latter's three. Both pitchers look as though they'll be part of the rotation against Detroit this weekend, as Boyle is listed as Oakland's starting pitcher for Saturday. The Athletics could change course and deploy an opening pitcher in front of Waldichuk, but either way, the 25-year-old southpaw is slated to cover the bulk of the innings Friday.

Hit hard in Sunday's loss
Waldichuk (3-8) took the loss Sunday against the Padres, allowing six runs on nine hits in four innings. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk entered Sunday's action allowing just one run over his last 16 innings but was taken for a ride Sunday. His nine hits allowed tied for the most he's given up in any outing this season and it was his fourth time allowing six runs or more in an appearance. He came on in relief of Joe Boyle in the fourth quickly gave up two runs and wound up ending his day serving up a two-run homer to Juan Soto. It's been a rough campaign for Waldichuk, who now sits at a 5.40 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 122:68 K:BB in 130 innings. It's possible he could work in a tandem again with Boyle which would likely come in the weekend series against the Tigers.

Serving as primary pitcher Sunday
Waldichuk, who was originally slated for a conventional start Sunday against the Padres, will now serve as the primary pitcher behind opener Joe Boyle, who's expected to be called up from Triple-A Las Vegas, the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk served as the primary pitcher against the Astros last Sunday as well and turned in a gem of a six-inning no-hit effort. The left-hander hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in an appearance of any kind since Aug. 1, generating a 1-0 record and 1.91 ERA over the 37.2 innings covering his subsequent seven outings. Given that Waldichuk is fully stretched out for a starter's workload, he could well log 5-to-6 innings behind Boyle on Sunday.
Sep 12, 2023
Holds Astros hitless for six frames
Waldichuk (3-7) earned the win as Oakland's primary pitcher Monday, allowing one walk and striking out three batters over six scoreless and hitless innings against Houston.
ANALYSIS
Mason Miller worked as the Athletics' opener and held the Astros scoreless while tossing 45 pitches over two frames. Waldichuk followed and was even more impressive, allowing just two baserunners -- one on a hit-by-pitch and the other on a walk -- across six sterling innings. The southpaw didn't get credited with a quality start since he entered in the third frame, but he did nab his first victory since July 5. Waldichuk has been making a strong impression of late, allowing just one run over his past three outings covering 16 innings. He's posted a poor 9:9 K:BB but has given up just six hits over that stretch.
Sep 6, 2023
Solid in no-decision
Waldichuk allowed four hits and three walks while striking out three over six scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Blue Jays on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk held his own, but the Athletics' bullpen couldn't do the same in a seventh-inning collapse. This was his first scoreless effort since June 29 and his first win since July 5. Waldichuk had allowed eight runs over 14.2 innings across his three previous outings. The southpaw is at a 5.63 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 117:67 K:BB through 120 innings across 31 appearances (20 starts) this season. He's projected for a difficult road start in Houston early next week.
Sep 4, 2023
Getting ball Tuesday
Waldichuk will start for the Athletics on Tuesday against the Blue Jays, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk had seemed to be lined up for Monday's start, but the A's will push him back a day with Luis Medina (blister) coming off the injured list to start Monday. The left-hander has collected a 5.92 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 114:64 K:BB over 114 innings for Oakland this season.
Aug 30, 2023
Shaky control in no-decision
Waldichuk allowed one run on one hit and five walks while striking out three over four innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk threw just 52 of 91 pitches for strikes, and he also had a wild pitch and a balk. The inefficiency cost him a chance to pick up his first win since July 5. In his 10 outings since, he's walked multiple batters six times while limiting opponents to one run four times. Overall, he's at a 5.92 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 114:64 K:BB over 114 innings through 30 appearances (19 starts). Waldichuk is tentatively lined up for an outing at home versus the Angels this weekend, though it may be a piggyback situation with Mason Miller (elbow) potentially ready to come off the 60-day injured list.
Aug 25, 2023
Yields three homers in no-decision
Waldichuk allowed five runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out four batters over five innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk carried a 3-1 lead into the fifth frame, but he surrendered the lead by giving up four runs in that inning. Three of those came via the long ball, as Elvis Andrus tagged him for a solo homer and Luis Robert knocked a two-run shot. Altogether, Waldichuk gave up three home runs, the sixth time this season he's surrendered multiple long balls in a contest. The mediocre outing ended a strong three-start stretch in which the southpaw had posted a 2.70 ERA and 18:5 K:BB over 16.2 frames.
Aug 20, 2023
Gives up two runs Saturday
Waldichuk allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out seven over 5.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Orioles on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Given the quality of opponent, Waldichuk did well to limit the damage to solo home runs by Austin Hays and James McCann in the fourth inning. Waldichuk has been steady in his last three outings, allowing five runs, 17 hits and five walks with 19 strikeouts over 16.2 innings. He's now at a 5.91 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 107:59 K:BB through 105 innings over 28 appearances (17 starts) this year. The left-hander is projected for a road outing versus the White Sox in his next start.
Aug 14, 2023
Solid in no-decision
Waldichuk did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing a run on seven hits and a walk over five innings in an 8-7 loss against Washington. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk pitched well Sunday, allowing just one run in the opening inning before blanking Washington over his final four frames. However, the A's bullpen imploded in the ninth, allowing six runs to blow a 7-2 lead and leave Waldichuk with a no-decision. The 25-year-old southpaw has held opponents to two runs or fewer in three of his last four starts though he still sports an unsightly 6.07 ERA with a 1.70 WHIP and 51:24 K:BB across 48.2 innings this season.
Aug 8, 2023
Solid versus Rangers
Waldichuk allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out seven over six innings in a no-decision versus the Rangers on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk completed six innings for the second time this year, and he earned his second quality start. The southpaw contained the damage to a two-run double from Mitch Garver in the fourth inning. Waldichuk has given up 11 runs (10 earned) over 18.2 innings across his last four outings and has a 6.30 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 96:55 K:BB through 94.1 innings overall. His next appearance is likely to be on the road versus the Nationals this weekend.
Aug 2, 2023
Falters in start
Waldichuk (2-7) allowed four runs on a hit, three walks and a hit batsman while striking out five over 3.2 innings to take the loss Tuesday versus the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk got through the order once without trouble, but the Dodgers rallied in the fourth inning. He's failed to complete five innings in any appearance since May 19, whether working as a starter or a reliever. The southpaw is now at a 6.52 ERA, 1.74 WHIP and 89:54 K:BB through 88.1 innings over 25 appearances (14 starts). Waldichuk is tentatively projected for a difficult home outing versus the Rangers next week.
Jul 26, 2023
Steady as bulk reliever
Waldichuk allowed an unearned run on one hit and two walks while striking out six over 4.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Facing the Giants' offense in its current state was likely a blessing for Waldichuk, who had given up 10 runs over 13.2 innings across his first four appearances this month. He still walked multiple batters for the fourth time in his last five outings, but he was able to successfully limit the damage. Waldichuk is now at a 6.38 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 84:51 K:BB through 84.2 innings over 24 appearances (13 starts) this season. The southpaw is tentatively projected for a tough road matchup versus the Dodgers next week, though it's unclear if he'll start or pitch behind an opener.
Jul 20, 2023
Struggles with control Wednesday
Waldichuk didn't factor into the decision against the Red Sox on Wednesday, allowing four earned runs on five hits and three walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk worked himself up to 90 pitches despite not making it out of the fifth inning, as only 50 of his offerings found the strike zone. The left-hander started off on the wrong foot when he surrendered a two-run home run to Justin Turner in the first inning, and after holding Boston off the board for the next three frames, Waldichuk was chased after surrendering an RBI single to Rob Refsnyder. The 25-year-old will be looking to reverse what is now a two-start rough patch the next time he takes the hill, as Waldichuk has now pitched to a 7.88 ERA and 1.63 WHIP across the eight innings covering that pair of outings, albeit while also recording 10 strikeouts.
Jul 15, 2023
Registers no decision
Waldichuk did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks over 3.2 innings against the Twins. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk turned in yet another mediocre outing, as he now has a 6.66 ERA and 1.84 WHIP on the season. The southpaw is clearly not a realistic option in fantasy at this point, barring a major turnaround.
Jul 10, 2023
Takes sixth loss Sunday
Waldichuk (2-6) took the loss against the Red Sox on Sunday, allowing an earned run on two hits over 1.1 innings. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk was tasked with preserving a 3-3 tie when he entered in the seventh inning, and he impressively generated a 1-2-3 frame by retiring the dangerous trio of Justin Turner, Rafael Devers and Adam Duvall. However, Masataka Yoshida's solo home run to lead off the eighth ultimately proved the difference in the game and saddled Waldichuk with his fourth loss in the last five decisions. The southpaw has been scuffling of late, as Sunday's stumble sends Waldichuk into the All-Star break with a 7.59 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over the 10.2 innings covering his last four appearances.
Jul 6, 2023
Notches second win
Waldichuk (2-5) earned the win Wednesday against Detroit. He allowed two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out three over 4.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk entered in the fourth inning staked to a 4-0 lead after Austin Pruitt delivered three shutout frames. The 25-year-old Waldichuk held the Tigers at bay, allowing just two runs in the eighth en route to the win, his first since May 6. The southpaw has looked better since moving into a bullpen role -- he held opponents scoreless in four of his previous five outings. Overall, Waldichuk still has an ugly 6.62 ERA with a 1.87 WHIP and 67:44 K:BB across 70.2 innings this season.
Jul 5, 2023
Working in bulk relief
Waldichuk will serve as a bulk reliever behind opener Austin Pruitt in Wednesday's game in Detroit, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pruitt isn't expected to cover more than 1-to-3 innings before turning the game over to Waldichuk, who should be capable of providing Oakland with a decent amount of length after he tossed 2.2 innings in his most recent appearance out of the bullpen back on June 29. While moving between the bullpen and rotation this season, Waldichuk has compiled a 6.78 ERA and 1.91 WHIP in 66.1 innings, so he won't make for an especially appealing streaming option even though his usage as a bulk reliever theoretically gives him a better chance at qualifying for a win.
Jul 4, 2023
Working bulk innings Wednesday
Waldichuk is expected to pitch the bulk of the innings for the Athletics on Wednesday in Detroit, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It's possible he'll come on after an opener, but Waldichuk is in line for most of the workload against the Tigers. The left-hander has posted a 6.78 ERA over 19 appearances (11 starts) for the A's this season.
Jun 21, 2023
Effective as opener Tuesday
Waldichuk served as the opener for Tuesday's game against the Guardians, firing 1.2 scoreless innings during which he allowed two hits and recorded two strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk's mostly sharp performance saw him pound 20 of his 27 pitches in for strikes and set the table effectively for bulk reliever Luis Medina, who followed with 4.1 frames of one-run ball. Waldichuk appears to be finding his groove as a multi-role reliever, now having pitched to a 1.69 ERA and not allowing a home run over the 10.2 innings covering his last five appearances. However, control remains a persistent issue, as the southpaw also owns a 1.69 WHIP during the same span thanks in large part to a 5.9 BB/9.
Jun 19, 2023
Serving as opener Tuesday
Waldichuk will open Tuesday's game against the Guardians, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk will likely pitch an inning or two before Luis Medina enters as Oakland's primary pitcher Tuesday. The 25-year-old lefty holds a 6.64 ERA on the season, but he's been much better as of late with a 2.00 ERA through nine innings since the start of June.
Jun 13, 2023
Notches first career save
Waldichuk picked up the save Monday against the Rays. He allowed two hits while striking out five over three scoreless innings. He did not walk a batter.
ANALYSIS
While Waldichuk is in the midst of a rough season, his three-inning save on Monday was a step in the right direction. While the southpaw largely struggled as a starter dating back to his rookie season last year, he now has two scoreless relief appearances out of his last three. However, fantasy managers should still be wary of him, considering his 6.87 ERA and 1.94 WHIP.
Jun 1, 2023
Works out of bullpen
Waldichuk pitched the seventh inning of Wednesday's 4-2 loss to Atlanta, giving up one earned run on two hits and one walk while striking out one.
ANALYSIS
After pitching an inning as an opener in front of Luis Medina in his last appearance Sunday against the Astros, Waldichuk filled a more traditional relief role Wednesday for the first time all season. Though Oakland likely still views Waldichuk as a starter over the long haul, he looks as though he'll be relegated to the bullpen after logging a 7.40 ERA and 1.97 WHIP in 48.2 innings over his first 10 outings of the season.
May 29, 2023
One inning as opener Sunday
Waldichuk served as the opener in Sunday's loss to the Astros, allowing an earned run on one hit over an inning while recording two strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander almost escaped his one frame unscathed, but Yordan Alvarez got to him with a two-out solo home run to give the Astros an early lead. Waldichuk threw only 16 pitches (11 strikes), but he may be set to work in an opener or reliever role of some capacity moving forward now that Paul Blackburn (finger) is being activated from the injured list and Hogan Harris is up from Triple-A Las Vegas.
May 28, 2023
Filling opener role Sunday
Waldichuk is scheduled to serve as the Athletics' opener in front of primary pitcher Luis Medina in Sunday's game against the Astros, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk worked as a bulk reliever in his last appearance Wednesday in Seattle, but he looks like he could be in line for a lighter innings count Sunday while he pitches on three days' rest ahead of Luis Medina, who is making his usual turn through the rotation. The Athletics haven't indicated that Waldichuk's usage as an opener will foreshadow a move to the bullpen, but it could be a possibility for the young left-hander, who has been shelled to the tune of a 7.40 ERA and 1.97 WHIP through his first 10 outings of the season.
May 25, 2023
Roughed up in bulk role
Waldichuk (1-4) took the loss Wednesday against Seattle. He allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out seven over 2.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Oakland elected to use Austin Pruitt as an opener for Waldichuck. It didn't help, as Waldichuck was chased in the fourth inning after allowing eight of 10 batters to reach. The lefty has four appearances allowing at least four runs with just one outing surrendering two runs or less. He did pick up seven strikeouts, tied for a season high. However he is not a viable fantasy option.
May 24, 2023
No longer starting Wednesday
Waldichuk (calf) is no longer starting for the A's on Wednesday versus the Mariners, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The expectation is that he'll operate in bulk relief behind opener Austin Pruitt. It's probably a way to protect Waldichuk after he suffered a mild calf strain last Friday against the Astros. He threw a side session without issue Monday.
May 22, 2023
Throws without issue
Waldichuk (calf) threw a side session Monday and is on track to make his next scheduled start Wednesday against the Mariners, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk sustained a mild calf strain in his last outing Friday, but he has thrown a couple times since, and it appears he will avoid missing any action. Waldichuk faced Seattle once last season but has not done so since the current campaign began.
May 22, 2023
Plays catch again Sunday
Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said Waldichuk (calf) played catch Sunday for the second straight day, but the team has yet to decide whether the lefty will be fit to make his next start Wednesday in Seattle, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk is tending to a mild left calf strain, which he sustained in his most recent start Friday in Houston. Though he's felt better in the two days immediately following the start, the Athletics plan to re-evaluate Waldichuk on Monday before determining whether he'll be ready to go Wednesday.
May 21, 2023
Feeling better Saturday
Waldichuk, who exited Friday's loss to the Astros with a mild calf strain, was feeling better Saturday and could make his next scheduled start Wednesday, the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw's sixth-inning exit came after he'd already allowed four runs in five hits and five walks, so he may not have been long for the night at that point anyhow. However, Waldichuk did indeed suffer a strain, but manager Mark Kotsay was optimistic enough about the pitcher's overnight improvement to leave open the possibility he'd have a chance to to the rubber when next scheduled, Wednesday night on the road against the Mariners.
May 20, 2023
Another mediocre start
Waldichuk (1-3) took the loss Friday versus the Astros, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and five walks while striking out three over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk has suddenly had trouble with walks, issuing 16 of them over 15 innings across his last three starts. That's combined with an already level of performance to see him surrender at least three runs in five straight outings. For the season, the 25-year-old has a 6.85 ERA, 1.85 WHIP and 39:28 K:BB through 46 innings through nine starts. Waldichuk is lined up for a road start in Seattle next week.
May 13, 2023
Records unremarkable outing in victory
Waldichuk did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and five walks over five innings against Texas. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk registered a 1:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio for the second straight start, and he's pitched six innings just once this year. The southpaw also sports a sky-high 7.02 ERA, which is not up to par for fantasy. The 25-year-old is still getting his feet wet in the majors, but managers are going to have to wait for him to develop before he can be trusted as a reliable option.
May 10, 2023
Start pushed back to Friday
Athletics manager Mark Kotsay announced Wednesday that Waldichuk will now start Friday's game against the Rangers, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk was originally scheduled to get the ball Thursday for the series opener, but the Athletics will shuffle around their rotation and give the left-hander an extra day of rest before his next outing. JP Sears will now get the start Saturday with Drew Rucinski working Sunday, but Oakland has yet to announce who will be on the hill for Thursday's series opener with Kotsay only saying they will have a starter work in that game.
May 6, 2023
Struggles with control
Waldichuk (1-2) earned the win Saturday, allowing four runs on six hits and six walks over five innings in a 5-4 victory over Kansas City. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk grabbed his first win of the year after four straight no-decisions. He also set a season high in walks, doubling the previous mark of three. Most of the damage came in the fourth, where Waldichuk gave up a solo homer to Freddy Fermin and a two-run shot to Bobby Witt that plated Jackie Bradley. Waldichuk has struggled with the long ball this year, giving up 11 home runs over 36.0 innings to go along with a poor 7.25 ERA. Though Waldichuk doesn't provide much season-long value, he offers some intrigue as a matchup-based streamer considering the Oakland Coliseum's status as a pitcher-friendly ballpark.
May 1, 2023
Punches out seven
Waldichuk allowed three runs on six hits and a walk over 5.2 innings in Sunday's win against the Reds. He struck out seven and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk set a new season high with his seven punchouts and it's the second-best total of his MLB career. He gave up a solo home run to Nick Senzel in the second inning before getting charged with two more runs in the sixth. Waldichuk's ERA fell slightly to 7.26 with a 25:12 K:BB through six starts this season. His next outing is projected to be in Kansas City next week.
Apr 25, 2023
Coughs up five runs
Waldichuk allowed five runs on six hits and a walk over 5.1 frames during Monday's win over the Angels. He stuck out two and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Through five innings, Waldichuk allowed just a pair of solo homers to Brandon Drury and Chad Wallach. The Angels then broke through with a five-run sixth, including three runs being charged to Waldichuk. He's given up at least five runs in three of his first five outings in 2023, resulting in a 7.82 ERA and an 18:11 K:BB through 25.1 frames. Waldichuk forced just four whiffs, his lowest total of the year. The 25-year-old is currently lined up to face the Reds at home this weekend.
Apr 19, 2023
Throws first shutout of year
Waldichuk did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing zero runs on five hits and three walks over five innings against the Cubs. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk still finds himself winless on the season despite throwing five scoreless innings against Chicago, his best start of the year by far at this point. The 25-year-old southpaw is still finding his footing in his first full season as a big leaguer, but this outing shows promise. The San Diego native still has a less than desirable 7.65 ERA on the year, but he'll have plenty of opportunities to decrease that, starting with an away tilt against the Angels next week.
Apr 13, 2023
Allows three runs in no-decision
Waldichuk did not factor in the decision Wednesday against the Orioles, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Despite giving up three walks for the second consecutive game, the rookie southpaw pitched 6.1 innings, allowing only three runs before his exit. Waldichuk is slated to start in the upcoming series against the Cubs next week, providing him with an opportunity to secure his first big-league win; however, he must focus on enhancing his control and minimizing home runs, given his 10.20 ERA and 1.93 WHIP.
Apr 7, 2023
Chased early in tough outing
Waldichuk (0-2) allowed eight runs on eight hits and three walks over three innings Friday, striking out three and taking a loss against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
The rookie southpaw coughed up four homers in the ugly start, including Isaac Paredes' grand slam in the second inning. Waldichuk has been hammered for 14 runs (seven homers) through just 8.2 frames to start the year. He forced seven whiffs, including five via the fastball. He's lined up for a start in Baltimore next week.
Apr 2, 2023
Takes loss Sunday
Waldichuk (0-1) took the loss Sunday, allowing six runs on nine hits and one walk over 5.2 innings against the Angels. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk struggled in his final spring start and wasn't particularly sharp during his regular-season debut Sunday. He began the matchup by tossing three scoreless frames but gave up three home runs between the fourth and fifth innings. The southpaw got his first taste of big-league action last year and posted a 4.93 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 34.2 innings over seven starts. He tentatively lines up to make his next start in Tampa Bay on Friday, but he doesn't have much fantasy value in redraft leagues at this point.
Mar 27, 2023
Rough outing in final spring start
Waldichuk, who's slated to open the regular season in the starting rotation, allowed five earned runs on four hits, four walks and a wild pitch across 3.1 innings in a Bay Bridge series loss to the Giants on Sunday. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk is heading into the regular season with a worrisome spring body of work in tow, as the left-hander allowed multiple earned runs in each spring appearance and gave up four home runs across 13.2 innings. Nevertheless, with Paul Blackburn (finger) and Drew Rucinski (hamstring) both unavailable for Opening Day, Waldichuk will still have a chance to show if he can turn his fortunes around early in the campaign.
Mar 25, 2023
Rotation spot secure
Waldichuk will open the year in the Oakland rotation, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk has struggled significantly this spring, recording a 9.58 ERA and 2.23 WHIP while walking more batters (eight) than he's struck out (seven). That's something to keep in mind should those struggles continue into the regular season, but for now, Waldichuk's job isn't at risk.
Mar 13, 2023
Hit hard this spring
Waldichuk has allowed nine earned runs on nine hits and seven walks while recording four strikeouts across six innings over three Cactus League appearances (two starts).
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk has made a less than convincing case for a rotation spot this spring, as his line through three outings clearly indicates. Two of the nine hits the southpaw has conceded have left the yard as well, but Waldichuk, who posted a 2-2 record, 4.93 ERA and 1.21 WHIP across his first seven big-league starts at the tail end of last season, should still have at least a couple more Cactus League opportunities to right the ship before Opening Day.
Oct 6, 2022
Seven shutout innings
Waldichuk (2-2) allowed three hits and one walk while striking out four across seven scoreless innings to earn the win Wednesday against the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk ended his season in impressive fashion, turning in the longest start of his career. He posted a 7.15 ERA across his first five big-league starts, but he allowed only one earned run across his final 12 frames and two starts to end the campaign on a positive note. The end result was a 4.93 ERA and 33:10 K:BB across 34.2 innings, and Waldichuk should be a strong candidate to begin the 2023 season in the Oakland rotation.
Oct 1, 2022
Strikes out eight Friday
Waldichuk allowed a run on three hits and two walks while striking out eight over five innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk had some trouble in the first inning, with the lone run against him scoring on a Ty France RBI double. After that, Waldichuk didn't allow more than one baserunner in any of the next four innings before turning things over to the Athletics' bullpen. The rookie southpaw's strong effort lowered his ERA to 6.18 and his WHIP to 1.37 through 27.2 innings across six starts. He's added a 29:9 K:BB while going 1-2 in his first taste of big-league action. Waldichuk is tentatively lined up for one more start, which would be a home date against the Angels.

Tallies first win
Waldichuk (1-2) gave up four earned runs on five hits and no walks while striking out four over five innings to tally the win in a 10-4 victory over the Mets on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk allowed two home runs and only threw 71 pitches but managed to be awarded the win thanks to an unusually ineffective Jacob deGrom and some poor outfield defense by the Mets. It was Waldichuk's first major-league win. The 24-year-old left-hander has made five stats since being called up at the beginning of September and has given up three runs or more in four of the starts. He is tentatively expected to make his next start at Seattle.

Struggles in fourth MLB start
Waldichuk (0-2) allowed five runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three in 2.2 innings to take the loss during Sunday's game against the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk began Sunday's matchup by retiring six of the first seven batters he faced over the first two innings of the game, but he allowed plenty of baserunners in the bottom of the third inning before being pulled with two outs in the frame. He's now given up at least three runs in each of his last three starts, and Sunday's outing marked the first time that he hasn't lasted at least 4.2 innings over his first four big-league appearances. The southpaw has posted a 7.13 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in 17.2 innings over four starts with Oakland and projects to make his next start at home against the Mets on Saturday.

Yields five runs
Waldichuk allowed five runs on eight hits and a walk with six strikeouts in five innings in a no-decision versus the Rangers on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk's start was bookended by trouble -- he allowed two runs in the first inning and three more in the fifth. Still, he left in line for the win, but the Athletics' bullpen couldn't maintain the lead, denying Waldichuk his first major-league win. This was the worst of his first three starts, and it's a little concerning he struggled against an inferior opponent. The 24-year-old southpaw has a 5.40 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 14:5 K:BB through 15 innings. He's tentatively projected for a difficult road start in Houston this weekend.

Solid effort in loss
Waldichuk (0-1) took the loss against Atlanta on Wednesday, allowing three earned runs on three hits and a hit batsman while recording two strikeouts over 5.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
It was a serviceable effort against a fearsome array of bats for the young southpaw, who recorded first-pitch strikes on 14 of the 20 batters he faced across 92 pitches overall. Waldichuk's problems were essentially centered on the long ball, as he allowed a two-run home run to Vaughn Grissom in the fifth inning and conceded a solo shot to Dansby Swanson in the sixth as well before getting the hook. Waldichuk has been solid over his first two starts while pitching to a 3.60 ERA and 1.20 WHIP, and he lines up to build on those performances in a turn against the Rangers on the road Tuesday.

Picks up second start
Waldichuk is slated to start Wednesday's home game versus Atlanta, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Oakland is expected to scale down to a five-man rotation during the upcoming week, but Waldichuk will maintain his spot over James Kaprielian, who was moved to the bullpen ahead of Sunday's 5-0 win over the Orioles. In his first big-league start last week following his call-up from Triple-A Las Vegas, Waldichuk took a no-decision in Washington while striking out six and allowing one earned run on five hits and four walks across 4.2 innings.

Mixed bag in debut
Waldichuk allowed one earned run on five hits and four walks while striking out six across 4.2 innings Thursday against the Nationals. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Waldichuk showed promise in his big-league debut, racking up six strikeouts on the strength of 15 swinging strikes across 93 total pitches. He also showed some struggles with control, which isn't particularly surprising given that he had a 3.4 BB/9 in 95 innings between Double and Triple-A this season. Overall, it was an encouraging outing for Waldichuk, and he should have the chance to stick in the rotation for the remainder of the campaign.

Called up prior to start
The Athletics selected Waldichuk's contract from Triple-A Las Vegas ahead of his scheduled start Thursday in Washington.
ANALYSIS
Oakland designated right-handed reliever David McKay for assignment to clear room on the 40-man roster for Waldichuk, who will be making his big-league debut Thursday. The 24-year-old lefty, whom the Athletics acquired in the Aug. 1 deal that sent Frankie Montas to the Yankees, posted a 3.53 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 91:26 K:BB in 66.1 innings across 15 starts at Las Vegas and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on the season. With a strong showing over his starts with Oakland in the final five weeks of the season, Waldichuk could stake his claim to a permanent rotation spot with the Athletics heading into the 2023 campaign.
