With Mike Moustakas (quadriceps) moving to the 10-day injured list Sunday, Farmer looks like he could be in store for more regular action at second base, which could make him worthy of a pickup in NL-only leagues.

Farmer will be a part of the Reds' Opening Day roster, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.

The versatile player will be both the Reds' third catcher and a utility infielder, as he appeared behind the plate and at all four infield spots last season. He's versatility is his primary calling card, as he hasn't done much with his bat in his first 294 career plate appearances, hitting just .236/.289/.384.

The Reds have been impressed with Farmer's defense at shortstop in team workouts and scrimmages, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Farmer is making a case to be Freddy Galvis's backup, as the Reds still don't have a true shortstop behind him. "He's a unique athlete in that he can play the two most important positions, demanding from an athletic standpoint and skill standpoint," manager David Bell said. "Not many people fall into that category. We knew that, but I don't think I gave it enough thought to truly see how good he was at that position. He made great points, and it opened my eyes. He's showed it in this camp. He can really play there. He knew that, and maybe other people knew that."

With Freddy Galvis fighting shoulder and quadriceps injuries, Farmer has been getting extra game reps at shortstop and has been giving the Reds more confidence in his ability to play the position, John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

The Reds don't have a true backup shortstop, so every game that Farmer gets there is pretty important to the Reds, especially because Galvis isn't the most stable starter at the position to begin with.

Farmer started at shortstop Sunday against the White Sox and went 0-for-1 with a walk, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

There were reports earlier in spring that Farmer would get work at shortstop in the hopes that he could full a super-utility role for the club this season. With presumed starter Freddy Galvis (shoulder) currently sidelined, Farmer had the opportunity to gain experience at the position. He made a few plays during the first inning, catching a soft liner to his right and also successfully fielding a groundball hit by Tim Anderson.

The Reds are thin at shortstop this year - behind Freddy Galvis they only have Farmer and Alex Blandino on the depth chart. It's debatable whether Farmer can handle the position, however.
