Officially moves to injured list
Freeland (oblique) was placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The move to the injured list was to be expected for the left-hander, who will miss the rest of the season with an oblique strain after leaving Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Giants. Freeland finishes the 2023 campaign with a 5.03 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 94:42 K:BB across 155.2 innings. The 30-year-old inked an extension with Colorado in April of last year and is signed through at least 2026.
Sep 17, 2023
Likely done for season
Freeland injured his oblique during Saturday's start in Game 2 of a doubleheader against San Francisco and is unlikely to pitch again in 2023, per MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
Freeland initially felt pain in the second inning but finished out that frame and one more before exiting. He allowed a run on four hits and one walk while striking out one batter prior to his departure. The veteran hurler acknowledged after the contest that his season is likely over, saying, "It's the right move to get me out and get healthy through the rest of the season, and go into the offseason healthy." If Freeland has indeed thrown his last pitch of 2023, he'll finish with a 6-14 record, 5.03 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 94:42 K:BB over 155.2 innings. He's signed with Colorado through 2026.

Posts quality start Monday
Freeland allowed three runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out two batters over six innings in a no-decision versus the Cubs on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Freeland allowed just one run through four frames before fading a bit and yielding a single score in each of the fifth and sixth innings. That was still enough to earn him his second straight quality start, the first time he has accomplished back-to-back quality starts since mid-May. Freeland isn't really on the fantasy radar outside of deeper leagues, however, as he has posted a poor 5.07 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 93:41 K:BB over 152.2 innings on the campaign.

Bounces back with quality start
Freeland (6-14) allowed two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two over six innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Freeland was hit hard at home versus Atlanta in his last start, but he was able to bounce back in this outing. This was the first time he'd walked multiple batters in a start since July 9. The southpaw is now at a 5.09 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 91:41 K:BB through 146.2 innings over 27 starts this season. Freeland is projected for a home start versus the Cubs next week.
Aug 31, 2023
Downed by Atlanta
Freeland (5-14) allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and a walk while striking out three over 5.2 innings, taking the loss Wednesday versus Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Facing baseball's most powerful offense at Coors Field was always going to be tricky for Freeland, and he didn't prove that theory wrong. He ended up with a sour end to a mediocre August in which he went 1-3 while allowing 25 runs (24 earned) over 33.2 innings across six starts. The poor month elevated his ERA from 4.79 to 5.18, and he has a 1.47 WHIP and 89:38 K:BB over 140.2 innings this season. Freeland is projected to make his next start on the road in Arizona.
Aug 26, 2023
Hurls quality start
Freeland did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing three runs on eight hits and zero walks over six innings against the Orioles. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
It was the 10th time in his past 11 starts that Freeland has allowed three or more earned runs. However, despite allowing eight hits including a couple of homers, Freeland limited the damage on the scoreboard to three runs and left with the lead after six. The Orioles would go on to score two in the eighth to take the lead and render Freeland with a no-decision. Freeland will take a season ERA of 5.00 into his next start, currently slated to take place at home next Wednesday against Atlanta.
Aug 20, 2023
Does enough to win
Freeland (5-13) earned the win over the White Sox on Saturday, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out six batters over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Freeland needed 95 pitches to get through five frames, but he capitalized on a barrage of run support to pick up his first victory since May 14. The veteran struggled over 14 starts between victories, posting a 6.19 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 39:24 K:BB over 72.2 innings while going 0-9. Despite getting into the win column Saturday, Freeland allowed four runs for the third time in his past four outings.
Aug 13, 2023
Gives up four runs in loss
Freeland (4-13) allowed four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out one over five innings to take the loss Sunday versus the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Freeland has lost five of his last six starts, and he's given up at least four runs four times in that span. The southpaw has given up six home runs over three starts in August, with the light-hitting Miguel Rojas the latest to take him deep with a solo shot Sunday. Freeland is at a 4.94 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 77:36 K:BB through 124 innings over 23 starts this season. He's lined up to make his next start at home versus the White Sox.
Aug 9, 2023
Tosses quality start
Freeland did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing three runs on eight hits and zero walks over six innings against the Brewers. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Although he allowed eight of Milwaukee's nine hits Tuesday, Freeland's refusal to issue free passes helped him break his streak of four consecutive starts with a loss. However, the 30-year-old lefty was given a lead to work with twice but gave them both up immediately courtesy of home runs from William Contreras in the third inning and Andruw Monasterio in the seventh. Freeland was pulled shortly after Monasterio's homer and remains in search of his first win since May 14 against Philadelphia.
Aug 2, 2023
Falls to San Diego
Freeland (4-12) took the loss Wednesday, allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings against the Padres. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Freeland was done in by the long ball Wednesday -- all four runs against him came via home runs. The 30-year-old southpaw is still looking for his first win since May 14. Freeland's now 0-8 with a 6.28 ERA over his last 12 starts (61.2 innings). Overall, his ERA is up to 4.86 with a 1.47 WHIP and 72:35 K:BB across 21 starts (113 innings) this season.
Jul 29, 2023
Yields five runs in return
Freeland (4-11) allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits over four innings Friday, striking out three and taking a loss against Oakland.
ANALYSIS
Making his first start since July 9 after a stint on the injured list, Freeland stumbled out of the gate; all five runs that scored against him came during the first three innings. While only three runs were earned, Freeland's ERA still rose to 4.79 through 107 innings. He threw 70 pitches Friday and should be fine for a full workload in his next outing, which is currently projected to be at home against San Diego.
Jul 28, 2023
Reinstated from IL
The Rockies reinstated Freeland (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Friday.
ANALYSIS
Freeland was placed on the injured list July 14 (retroactive to July 13) and will now return after a minimum stay. The 30-year-old southpaw holds a 4.72 ERA through 103 innings on the season and will get to face an Oakland offense that ranks last in team OPS (.655).
Jul 26, 2023
Cleared for Friday return
Freeland (shoulder) will return to the Rockies' rotation Friday against the Athletics, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland passed the final test in his recovery with a successful simulated game Tuesday, which included fielding practice. He dislocated his right (non-throwing) shoulder while attempting to field a bunt July 9 against the Giants. Riley Pint has already been optioned out to Triple-A Albuquerque to free up a 26-man roster spot for Freeland's activation Friday.
Jul 25, 2023
Targeting Friday return
Freeland (shoulder) will likely start Friday against Oakland, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland is slated to throw a live batting practice session Tuesday and should be activated from the 15-day injured list Friday if all goes well. The 30-year-old southpaw has been on the IL since July 14 with a dislocated right shoulder and will seemingly face baseball's worst offense during his return.
Jul 25, 2023
Throws simulated game
Freeland (shoulder) threw a simulated game Tuesday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland tossed around 25 pitches from the mound and also did a bit of fielding work as he prepares for a possible return to the Rockies' rotation this weekend against the Athletics. The left-hander has been sidelined since before the All-Star break due to a dislocated right (non-throwing) shoulder.
Jul 23, 2023
Could return next weekend
Freeland (shoulder) is slated to throw a simulated game Tuesday and could be activated from the 15-day injured list to make a start next weekend versus the Athletics at Coors Field, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Assuming the sim game goes as expected, the Rockies would likely be eyeing next Sunday for Freeland's return to the rotation, which would allow him to stick to a normal four-day rest schedule. Freeland suffered a right shoulder subluxation in his final start before the All-Star break July 9 but was able to throw a 40-pitch bullpen session a week and a half later. He threw another side session Saturday and now appears ready to test himself against hitters.
Jul 22, 2023
Throws bullpen session
Freeland (shoulder) completed another bullpen session Saturday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland hit the injured list with a dislocated shoulder in early July, but he's already nearing his return. He could be back by next weekend, assuming he checks out fine following his bullpen work.
Jul 22, 2023
Shooting for late July return
Freeland (shoulder) is throwing another bullpen session Saturday, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland threw a 40-pitch bullpen session Wednesday and will continue to ramp up activity. Assuming there are no setbacks, he's hoping to return to the team's rotation next weekend in a series against the Athletics.
Jul 20, 2023
Completes bullpen session
Freeland (shoulder) completed a 40-pitch bullpen session Wednesday, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland has been sidelined since July 9 while dealing with a dislocated shoulder. He's hoping to let the injury heal naturally, and he took his first step back toward a return during an "aggressive" throwing session. There is still no timetable for his return.
Jul 14, 2023
Lands on injured list
The Rockies placed Freeland on the 15-day injured list Friday with a right shoulder subluxation.
ANALYSIS
The move comes retroactive to Tuesday, meaning Freeland will be eligible to return July 26. There's no timetable in place for Freeland's return, but he said that his current status is the "best case scenario", per Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com. Tommy Doyle was selected from Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move.
Jul 9, 2023
Suffers dislocated right shoulder
Freeland suffered a dislocated right shoulder in Sunday's start against the Giants, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
His non-throwing shoulder popped out and then popped back in, and Freeland was sent for X-rays after the game. It's unclear if he will be placed on the injured list or if he will be able to pitch through the injury. Freeland gave up one run through 6.1 innings before exiting Sunday.
Jul 9, 2023
Suffers right shoulder injury
Freeland was removed from Sunday's start against the Giants with an apparent right shoulder injury, Kelsey Wingert-Linch of AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander was pitching well in San Francisco on Sunday with just one run allowed through 6.1 frames, but he appeared to injure his non-throwing shoulder while attempting to field a bunt during the seventh inning. Freeland already wasn't scheduled to pitch during the first game of the second half next weekend against the Yankees, so it'll be at least eight full days until his next turn through the rotation. The 30-year-old availability will remain up in the air until he's further evaluated.
Jul 4, 2023
Takes another loss
Freeland (4-9) took the loss Tuesday, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks over 6.1 innings against the Astros. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Freeland had another rough outing Tuesday, allowing nine hits for the third time in his last four starts while also racking up three or fewer K's for the third time in that span. The loss was his ninth of the campaign -- tied for the third most in MLB -- and extended his winless streak to nine starts, dating back to May 14. Over his last four appearances (20.2 innings), Freeland owns an ugly 8.71 ERA and a 14:12 K:BB. The lefty is tentatively scheduled for a favorable road matchup at Oracle Park against the Giants this weekend.
Jun 29, 2023
Falters in fourth inning
Freeland allowed six runs on four hits and five walks while striking out seven batters over five innings in a no-decision against the Dodgers on Wedneday.
ANALYSIS
Colorado staked Freeland to a four-run lead after three frames, and the left-hander appeared to have things under control by retiring the first nine batters he faced. However, the veteran hurler imploded in the fourth, issuing four walks and allowing three hits -- including a three-run Mookie Betts homer -- as Los Angeles put up six runs. Freeland was allowed to finish that frame and complete one more, but the disastrous outing ended his chance of notching his first win since mid-May. Freeland began the season well but has struggled since that victory, posting a 7.15 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and 22:17 K:BB over 39 innings across eight starts.
Jun 24, 2023
Takes no-decision
Freeland allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits and two walks while striking out three over five innings in a no-decision versus the Angels on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Freeland left in line for the loss after giving up back-to-back solo home runs to Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout in the fifth inning. The Rockies pulled ahead on an Elias Diaz grand slam in the eighth to spare Freeland from a negative result. The southpaw battled an illness earlier in the week, which could explain his performance to some extent. He's gone seven starts without a win, though all of his bad outings in that span have come in challenging road matchups. For the season, Freeland has a 4.54 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 53:24 K:BB over 85.1 innings across 16 starts. He's lined up for a tough home start versus the Dodgers next week.
Jun 21, 2023
Set to pitch Friday
Freeland, who had been expected to pitch Wednesday in Cincinnati, is now slated to take the hill Friday against the Angels after he battled a virus earlier in the week, The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Since the Rockies have confirmed that Freeland will take the hill Friday, the illness is seemingly already behind him, but it likely affected his preparation enough early in the week that manager Bud Black opted to push the southpaw back a couple of days in the schedule. Jake Bird will now get the start Wednesday, though he's unlikely to work more than 1-to-3 innings before turning the game over to the bullpen.
Jun 16, 2023
Unravels in Atlanta
Freeland (4-8) took the loss Thursday, allowing seven runs on nine hits and three walks over 4.1 innings against Atlanta. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Most of the damage against Freeland came in the second inning, where he was tagged for five runs on four hits. The 30-year-old southpaw had pitched well in his prior two starts, allowing three runs over 12 innings, though he's only logged five or more strikeouts once in his last six outings. Freeland's ERA is now up to 4.48 with a 1.34 WHIP and 50:22 K:BB through 15 starts (80.1 innings). He's currently slated for a road matchup with the Reds in his next outing.
Jun 11, 2023
Sharp in no-decision
Freeland didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Padres, allowing one run on six hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw continues to pitch surprisingly well at Coors Field, giving up three runs or less in five straight home starts, but the Rockies bullpen couldn't protect a 2-1 lead and cost Freeland his fifth win. The 30-year-old will carry a 3.91 ERA and 49:19 K:BB through 76 innings into his next outing, likely to come next week in Atlanta.
Jun 5, 2023
Lasts seven innings in tough loss
Freeland (4-7) was handed another loss Sunday against the Royals, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out one over seven innings.
ANALYSIS
Freeland had a perfect game going until MJ Melendez broke it up with a double in the fifth. Michael Massey drove Melendez home two batters later with a base hit to give the Royals a lead they would never relinquish. Freeland continued to move through the order but was eventually pulled after squandering a leadoff home run in the eighth to Maikel Garcia. The 30-year-old tied his season high by going seven innings and showed great control, although he didn't generate a whole lot of whiffs. It was certainly a tough-luck loss for Freeland, who picked up his last win May. 14. He now sits at a 4.06 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 44:17 K:BB over 71 innings and lines up for a home matchup with the Padres next weekend.
May 31, 2023
Allows three homers
Freeland (4-6) took the loss Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks while striking out a single batter over 5.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Freeland surrendered two first inning homers and another in the sixth, which amounted to four of the five runs he gave up. The 30-year-old had given up just one home run over five starts this month coming into Tuesday despite three of those starts taking place at Coors Field and has now given up at least five runs in two of his last three outings. His ERA has shot up to a 4.22 to go with a 1.31 WHIP and 43:17 K:BB over 64 innings. Freeland is tentatively scheduled to take the mound again over the weekend against the Royals.
May 25, 2023
Bounces back in no-decision
Freeland did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings against Miami. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
It was a solid rebound for Freeland after he allowed eighth runs (five earned) over two innings in his last start against Texas. His last outing aside, Freeland has been solid of late, allowing two runs or less in four of his last five starts. The 30-year-old lefty is 4-5 this season with a solid 3.86 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 42:14 K:BB through 11 starts (58.1 innings) this season.
May 21, 2023
Crushed by Rangers
Freeland (4-5) took the loss Saturday as the Rockies were downed 11-5 by the Rangers, surrendering eight runs (five earned) on nine hits over two innings. He didn't walk or strike out a batter.
ANALYSIS
A Marcus Semien leadoff double set the tone for the afternoon, as Texas hitters and some shaky Colorado defense combined to hand Freeland his worst road start so far this season. The southpaw saw his ERA jump by nearly three-quarters of a run, but he'll still take a 3.88 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 38:12 K:BB through 53.1 innings into his next outing, likely to come against the Marlins back at Coors Field.
May 14, 2023
Excellent in fourth win
Freeland (4-4) pitched six shutout innings, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out eight to earn the win Sunday over the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
This was the fourth time this season that Freeland has kept runs off the board, and it's important to note he's achieved that feat three times at Coors Field. Sunday's outing was also his sixth quality starts in nine outings, four of which have come at home. The 30-year-old celebrated his birthday by lowering his ERA to 3.16 with a 1.11 WHIP and 38:12 K:BB across 51.1 innings this season. Freeland's next start is expected to be on the road versus the Rangers.
May 9, 2023
Takes loss despite quality start
Freeland (3-4) took the loss Monday, allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks over seven innings in a 2-0 loss to the Pirates. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Freeland, who allowed a season-high seven runs last time he faced Pittsburgh, tossed six scoreless frames before surrendering a two-run home run to Rodolfo Castro in the seventh. Despite the quality start, the left-hander picked up his fourth loss, as Mitch Keller tossed a complete game shutout. Freeland has been solid to start 2023, posting a 3.57 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 30:11 K:BB through eight starts (45.1 innings).
May 8, 2023
Cleared to start Monday
Freeland (neck) is listed as the Rockies' probable starting pitcher for Monday's game in Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
Freeland was bothered by a neck problem in his most recent outing last Wednesday against the Brewers, but he apparently came through his between-starts bullpen session no worse for the wear and will take the hill Monday on normal rest. The veteran southpaw tentatively lines up for a two-start week, with his second outing set to come over the weekend against the Phillies at Coors Field.
May 3, 2023
Experiences neck problems Wednesday
Freeland aggravated a neck injury during Wednesday's win over Milwaukee, Kyle Newman of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland said he first tweaked his neck while lifting weights after his previous start against the Diamondbacks, and the issue flared up again in the fifth inning of Wednesday's contest. Freeland's neck injury isn't expected to impact his next start, but it could be something the team keeps a closer eye on going forward.
Apr 29, 2023
Takes third loss of season
Freeland (2-3) took the loss Friday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk over six innings against the Diamondbacks. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Freeland pitched well, but was victimized by a dormant Colorado offense. The southpaw has bounced back nicely after giving up 7 runs in 2.2 innings against the Pirates on April 17th. The 29-year-old has allowed the same amount of runs over his last 12 innings. However, there is still room for improvement, as he's posted an unimpressive 4.32 ERA so far. Fortunately, Freeland still has plenty of time to try and regain his 2018 form (17-7, 2.85 ERA).
Apr 22, 2023
Can't keep ball in park Saturday
Freeland (2-2) took the loss Saturday as the Rockies were downed 4-3 by the Phillies, giving up four runs on five hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over six innings. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Despite being away from Coors Field, the southpaw still got hit hard, with Nick Castellanos leading the way for the Phillies by slugging solo homers in the second and sixth innings. Freeland sports a 4.28 ERA and 18:7 K:BB through 27.1 innings, losing his last two outings after kicking off the season with three straight quality starts. The 29-year-old will look to get back on track when he next takes the mound, which is likely to be at home next weekend against the Diamondbacks.
Apr 17, 2023
Hammered in big loss
Freeland (2-1) allowed nine runs (seven earned) on eight hits and walk over 2.2 innings Monday. He struck out one and took a loss against Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
Freeland couldn't find any sort of groove Monday and turned in his shortest start of the year. He gave up just two extra-base hits, including Andrew McCutchen's solo shot to open the game's scoring. Freeland had allowed just two runs through 18.2 frames prior to the ugly outing and his ERA jumped to 3.80. He's projected for a start in Philadelphia this weekend.
Apr 12, 2023
Fires quality start in no-decision
Freeland didn't factor in the decision Tuesday against the Cardinals after giving up two runs on six hits over six innings. He struck out five and walked two.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander was unable to secure his third straight win to begin the season as Colorado's bullpen blew a four-run lead, but it was still another strong showing Tuesday. Freeland is off to an impressive start through three outings in 2023 with a 0.96 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 11:5 K:BB across 18 frames.
Apr 7, 2023
Yet to allow a run
Freeland (2-0) earned the win over Washington on Thursday, pitching 6.2 scoreless innings during which he yielded four hits and two walks while striking out five batters.
ANALYSIS
All four of the hits Freeland gave up Thursday were singles, and he didn't allow any Nationals to reach second base. The southpaw made it through 6.2 frames on just 86 pitches, and he extended his streak of scoreless innings to begin the campaign to 12.2. Freeland has posted a mediocre 6:3 K:BB over that span, so he's not overpowering opponents, but he's given up just seven hits. The veteran hasn't finished a season with an ERA below 4.33 or a WHIP below 1.41 since 2018, so there's substantial risk in assuming he can keep this impressive run going. That said, he's almost certain to see his rostership creep up in fantasy -- especially in deeper leagues -- after his second straight excellent start.
Apr 1, 2023
Picks up win Friday
Freeland (1-0) tossed six shutout innings and earned a win over San Diego on Friday. He allowed three hits and a walk while striking out one.
ANALYSIS
Freeland leaned on his defense all night with just one punchout and two total whiffs. The only batter that gave him much trouble was Ha-Seong Kim, who knocked two doubles. Freeland needed just 74 pitches (48 strikes) in the easy win. He's scheduled for a home tilt with the Nationals next week.
Mar 24, 2023
Lined up as No. 2 starter
Freeland is lined up to start the second game of the regular season for the Rockies, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
German Marquez was announced Friday as the team's Opening Day starter next Thursday at San Diego, and Freeland will then follow him in the Colorado rotation mix. This also puts Freeland on track to start the Rockies' home opener April 6 versus the Nationals. The 29-year-old left-hander worked to a 4.53 ERA and 131:53 K:BB over 174.2 innings (31 starts) last season.
Feb 13, 2023
Added to WBC roster
Freeland's agency announced Monday that he has been named to the Team USA roster for the World Baseball Classic.
ANALYSIS
Freeland is the replacement for Nestor Cortes, who will miss the World Baseball Classic because of a grade 2 hamstring strain. The left-hander could be inline to make starts for USA, and is coming off a 2022 campaign where he recorded a 4.53 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 131:53 K:BB in 174.2 innings over 31 starts with the Rockies. He's expected to pitch near the top of the Colorado rotation in 2023 after competing in the WBC.
Oct 2, 2022
One out shy of quality start
Freeland allowed a run on seven hits and three walks while striking out eight over 5.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Freeland got through his last start of the season by bending but not breaking. He exited with runners on the corners and two outs in the sixth inning, falling one out shy of what would have been his 14th quality start this year. He then saw the victory slip away as the Dodgers rallied to tie the game in the seventh. Freeland ends the campaign with a 4.53 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 131:53 K:BB through 174.2 innings across 31 starts. Playing his home games at Coors Field did him no favors -- Freeland had a 6.00 ERA across 87 innings at home, but it was nearly half that (3.08) in 87.2 innings on the road.
Sep 25, 2022
Roughed up Sunday
Freeland (9-11) took the loss Sunday, allowing seven runs on nine hits with two strikeouts over 2.2 innings against the Padres.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw was hit hard by San Diego, as he never settled in and was pulled after allowing nine hits in what was his shortest outing of the season. The rough day breaks a five-game streak in which he threw five or more innings and allowed two or fewer runs. His ERA increased 31 points to 4.68, which would be his highest since 2019. He tentatively next lines up to face the Dodgers on the road this weekend.
Sep 21, 2022
Submits quality start in loss
Freeland (9-10) took the loss during Tuesday's 6-3 defeat at the hands of the Giants, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and one walk with four strikeouts in six innings.
ANALYSIS
Freeland held San Francisco to a single unearned run in the third through five frames but fell behind 3-0 after surrendering three straight doubles in the sixth. Despite snapping a two-start win streak, the 29-year-old continued a solid five-game stretch that features a 1.84 ERA across 29.1 innings. Freeland now possesses a 4.38 ERA and 1.36 WHIP with 121 strikeouts in 160.1 innings across 28 starts. He's currently scheduled to pitch again Sunday at home against San Diego.
Sep 14, 2022
Pitches 6.2 scoreless
Freeland (9-9) got the win after he tossed 6.2 scoreless frames, allowing seven hits and three walks while striking out five versus the White Sox on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Freeland wasn't perfect Wednesday, but he was able to escape any damage against him in the contest, producing a scoreless outing for the first time since July 25. The left-hander has now compiled four consecutive strong outings including back-to-back quality starts, surrendering four runs while striking out 18 batters over 23.1 frames during that span. The hot stretch has lowered his season ERA from 4.93 to 4.43 over 160.1 innings in 28 starts.
Sep 8, 2022
Another strong start
Freeland (8-9) allowed one earned run on two hits and a walk while striking out eight across six innings to earn the win Wednesday against the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Freeland's only run allowed came after Keston Hiura led off the fifth inning with a triple. He otherwise kept the Brewers off the scoreboard by inducing eight groundball outs in addition to his eight strikeouts that were backed by 15 swinging strikes on 85 total pitches. Freeland has now turned in three consecutive starts having allowed two or fewer earned runs, though this was his first outing in that span that came at home. For the season, Freeland owns a 4.63 ERA with a 112:46 K:BB across 153.2 innings.

Limits damage to one run
Freeland did not factor into the decision against the Reds on Friday, allowing one run on eight hits while striking out three and walking one over 5.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Freeland limited the damage to just one run on eight hits and a walk. He tossed 63 of 92 pitches for strikes across 5.2 frames. The only score he allowed was a solo shot to Spencer Steer in the fifth before he was pulled. Freeland has had an up-and-down season, with 10 games of four or more earned runs and 12 games of two or fewer earned runs. That has resulted in a 4.75 ERA for the lefty to go along with a 1.41 WHIP and a 7-9 record.

Takes ninth loss
Freeland (7-9) took the loss Saturday versus the Mets, allowing two runs on four hits, a walk and two hit batters with two strikeouts in five innings.
ANALYSIS
Brandon Nimmo was Freeland's main nemesis -- the Mets' outfielder hit a solo home run in the first inning and an RBI double in the second to account for both runs on the southpaw's line. The Rockies' offense was limited to five hits and couldn't give Freeland any run support. He's had a bit more success keeping the ball in the yard this year, allowing 17 homers through 142 innings across 25 starts. The 29-year-old owns a 4.88 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 101:44 K:BB, and he'll look to snap a four-start winless stretch next week in a projected road outing in Cincinnati.
Aug 21, 2022
Chased by grand slam
Freeland did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and three walks over 6.1 innings against the Giants. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The Rockies' veteran ran into trouble in the second inning as four runners reached base, two of which came around to score and only one of which was earned. He then cruised through the next three innings but was chased in the seventh after allowing a grand slam off the bat of Evan Longoria. This was the eighth time that Freeland has allowed five or more runs this season, and his 4.93 ERA is his worst since 2019. Things won't get much easier in his next scheduled start versus the Mets this weekend.
Aug 17, 2022
Gives up two homers
Freeland allowed three runs on seven hits, a walk and a hit batsman while striking out four over six innings in a no-decision versus the Cardinals on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Freeland was able to avoid giving up home runs to the Cardinals last Wednesday in Denver, but he struggled in a loss. He allowed less traffic on the bases Tuesday in St. Louis, but Tommy Edman and Paul Goldschmidt tagged him for a pair of homers accounting for all three runs on the southpaw's line. It'll still count as Freeland's third quality start in his last five outings. He has a 4.82 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 94:40 K:BB through 130.2 innings across 23 starts. The 29-year-old is projected for a home start versus the Giants this weekend.
Aug 11, 2022
Knocked around by Cardinals
Freeland (7-8) took the loss against St. Louis on Wednesday, allowing six runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out one batter over 4.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Freeland had been pitching well coming into the contest, picking up three straight wins and striking out 20 batters over his past 18.2 innings. He took a step back against the Cardinals, however, yielding 10 hits -- five of which went for extra bases -- and tying his worst mark of the season by yielding six earned runs. Freeland struck out only one batter in the loss after punching out at least six in each of his previous three starts. He's had some strong stretches this season but is a volatile fantasy pitcher overall with a 4.84 ERA and 1.41 WHIP on the campaign.

Earns seventh win
Freeland (7-7) allowed two earned runs on six hits and four walks while striking out seven across 5.2 innings to earn the win Thursday against the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Freeland turned in a strong effort against the revamped Padres lineup and his line could have looked even better. Juan Soto was credited with a triple to lead off the sixth inning, but it came on a routine fly ball that fell in between Charlie Blackmon and Yonathan Daza due to miscommunication. Freeland unraveled a bit from there and surrendered two runs before being pulled. Nevertheless, he's been on a good run of late, maintaining a 2.41 ERA and 1.13 WHIP with a 20:5 K:BB across his last three starts -- two of which of have come on the road.

Submits quality start in win
Freeland (6-7) earned the win over the Dodgers on Saturday. He allowed three runs on six hits and hit one batter while striking out six and walking none in six innings.
ANALYSIS
Freeland gave up one run in the first inning and two more in the third before retiring nine of the last 10 batters he faced. The Rockies rallied ahead in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the southpaw in line for the win, and the bullpen preserved the two-run advantage. This was his second straight quality start and win, and he's turned in eight quality starts this year. For the season, Freeland owns a 4.63 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 82:33 K:BB across 114.2 innings in 20 starts. His next appearance is tentatively scheduled to be a road start in San Diego next week.

Dominates Brewers in win
Freeland (5-7) earned the win over Milwaukee on Monday, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out seven batters over seven scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
The Brewers managed only four hits -- all of which were singles -- against the veteran left-hander, and no Milwaukee batter reached second base until the ninth inning. Freeland threw 58 of 99 pitches for strikes and finished with his most punchouts since May 18 -- a span of 10 starts. He entered Monday having allowed 15 runs in 16 innings in July, so this was a nice bounce-back in his first start of the second half. Freeland still carries a mediocre 4.64 ERA on the campaign.
Jul 15, 2022
Surrenders five runs
Freeland allowed five earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three across four innings Thursday against the Padres. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Freeland was given five runs of support, but he squandered the chance for a win. His recent struggles continued, and he's now allowed 15 earned runs across his last 16 innings and three starts -- two of which came on the road. For the season, Freeland has a 4.96 ERA with a 69:32 K:BB across 101.2 frames.
Jul 10, 2022
Fades late again
Freeland (4-7) took the loss Saturday versus the Diamondbacks. He allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 6.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Freeland got off to a rocky start, allowing three runs in the first inning. He settled in well after that, allowing just one baserunner in the next four innings, but Jordan Luplow tagged him for a solo shot in the sixth and Freeland allowed two more batters aboard in the seventh before his exit. This was only the second time he's allowed a half-dozen or more runs in a start, but he's rarely been dominant as evidenced by his 4.70 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 66:29 K:BB through 97.2 innings in 17 starts. He's tentatively projected for a tough home start versus the Padres next week.
Jul 5, 2022
Unravels in fifth inning
Freeland (4-6) took the loss Monday versus the Dodgers. He allowed four runs on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Freeland retired 13 Dodgers in a row to start the game, but they built a rally against him in the fifth inning. Trayce Thompson took him deep for a three-run home run and Mookie Betts added an RBI single. Freeland got into more trouble in the sixth before Jhoulys Chacin relieved him. Freeland completed at least six frames in each of his five starts in June, so Monday marked a slight step back. The southpaw has a 4.43 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 63:27 K:BB across 91.1 innings in 16 starts. He's projected for a road start versus the Diamondbacks this weekend.
Jun 29, 2022
Pitches quality start
Freeland (4-5) gave up three earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out five to get the win in a 7-4 victory over the Dodgers on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Freeland has been on a roll lately, and his quality start against the tough Dodgers lineup gives him four quality starts out of five appearances in June. He has earned three wins over the time span while lowering his ERA to 4.31, despite three of those starts coming at home. The 29-year-old left-hander is holding batters to a .231 average on the road this year, while that number jumps to .300 at home. Look for him to face off with the Dodgers again on Monday.
Jun 24, 2022
Seven strong innings
Freeland allowed two earned runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out five across seven innings Thursday against the Marlins. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Freeland allowed two earned runs through the first three innings but settled in from there to deliver his third quality start in his last four outings. His five strikeouts were his highest mark in his last four turns through the rotation, and he tallied 14 swinging strikes across 107 total pitches Thursday. Thanks to his recent stretch, Freeland has lowered his ERA to 4.29 on the season, though he has a mediocre 53:23 K:BB across 79.2 frames.
Jun 18, 2022
Earns second win in a row
Freeland (3-5) picked up a seven-inning win against the Padres on Friday, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out none and walking one.
ANALYSIS
Freeland did not pitch his best, but picked up a win anyway, thanks to his offense scoring 10 runs. Although he did not strike out any batters and allowed eight hits, the lefty was able to limit the damage to four runs. Freeland showed efficiency, throwing 56 of 82 pitches for strikes across seven frames. He will have to do better in his next outing to ensure a win, since he likely will not get another 10 runs of support.
Jun 12, 2022
Earns second victory
Freeland (2-5) earned the win during Saturday's 6-2 victory over San Diego in Game 2 of a doubleheader, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts in six innings.
ANALYSIS
Freeland was staked to an early 6-0 lead and coasted to an easy victory, only surrendering runs on Luke Voit RBIs in the fourth and sixth inning. The 29-year-old has now surrendered one or zero runs in six of his last nine starts though he has just two wins to show for it, but conversely has struck out four or fewer batters in seven of 12 turns. Freeland now owns a 4.39 ERA and 1.42 WHIP with a bottom-10 2.18 K/BB and lines up for a rematch with San Diego next weekend.
Jun 5, 2022
Logs quality start in no-decision
Freeland registered a no-decision during Saturday's 6-2 loss to Atlanta on Saturday, allowing one run on five hits and one walk with three strikeouts in seven innings.
ANALYSIS
Freeland made just one mistake Saturday -- an Austin Riley 435-foot solo shot in the sixth inning -- that proved to be the difference as the game went to extra innings tied at 1-1. The 29-year-old continues to be a risk/reward option as he's now surrendered one run or fewer in five of his last eight starts though he's averaged nearly five runs surrendered in the other three. Freeland carries a 4.53 ERA and 1.47 WHIP into his next appearance, scheduled for next weekend against San Diego.
Jun 2, 2022
Looks good for Saturday
Freeland (ankle) is listed as the Rockies' starting pitcher for Saturday's game against Atlanta in Colorado.
ANALYSIS
Freeland appeared to be at risk of landing on the injured list after he was diagnosed with a left ankle impingement following his most recent outing Sunday in Washington, but he apparently checked out fine following his between-starts bullpen session and looks like he'll be ready to return to the mound on five days' rest this weekend. The southpaw owns a 6.25 ERA and 1.67 WHIP across 31.2 innings at Coors Field this season.
May 29, 2022
X-rays come back negative
Freeland had X-rays on his left ankle come back negative after exiting Sunday's start against the Nationals, and he was diagnosed with an impingement, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old was pulled from Sunday's outing with two outs during the sixth inning after he landing awkwardly while delivering a pitch. Freeland appears to have avoided a serious injury, and the Rockies don't believe he'll require a stint on the injured list. The left-hander gave up five runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and four walks over 5.2 frames Sunday, and he saw his record fall to 1-5.
May 29, 2022
Leaves start after awkward landing
Freeland was removed midway through the sixth inning of his start Sunday against the Nationals after he landed awkwardly while delivering a pitch, Joe Trezza of MLB.com. He was charged with five earned runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out two over 5.2 frames.
ANALYSIS
The Rockies will likely provide an update on the nature of Freeland's injury after the contest, but Trezza suggests that the southpaw may have been dealing with an arm-related concern in addition to the apparent lower-body issue that ended his day early. Freeland's velocity was down from its usual levels throughout the afternoon, and the lefty displayed spotty control, as he threw only 62 of his 107 pitches for strikes. Assuming Freeland is able to make his between-starts bullpen session without incident, he'll line up to make his next turn through the rotation next weekend versus Atlanta at Coors Field.
May 24, 2022
Lasts 4.1 frames
Freeland did not factor in the decision Tuesday against the Pirates, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander didn't give up a hit through the first four frames Tuesday, but Pittsburgh tallied a run on two hits and a walk during the fifth before he was pulled. Freeland has issued a walk in every start this season and multiple walks in four straight outings. He'll carry a 4.85 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 40:15 K:BB across 48 innings (nine starts) into his next outing, which tentatively lines up for Sunday in Washington.
May 18, 2022
Logs quality start
Freeland allowed three earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out eight across six innings Wednesday against the Giants. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Freeland surrendered all of his runs in the first four innings, but he retired six of the last seven batters he faced to log his third quality start of the season. He also struck out a season-best eight batters on the strength of 16 swinging strikes across 103 total pitches. Freeland has allowed two or fewer earned runs in four starts this season, but five or more in three outings. The end result is a 4.85 ERA with a 34:13 K:BB across 42.2 innings on the campaign.
May 14, 2022
Shelled in loss
Freeland (1-4) took the loss during Friday's 14-10 defeat at the hands of the Royals, allowing eight runs (six earned) on 12 hits and two walks in 4.2 innings. He failed to record a strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Freeland got himself down 2-0 two batters into the game before permitting four more runs in the third and two in the fifth. The 28-year-old had pitched well prior to Friday -- surrendering four runs in 23 innings across his last four turns -- though he failed to record a strikeout and only induced two swinging strikes. Freeland will look to get back on track against San Francisco early next week.
May 8, 2022
Six shutout innings
Freeland allowed five hits and two walks while striking out five across six innings Saturday against the Diamondbacks. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Freeland was engaged in an improbable pitcher's duel with Zach Davies, and he limited the Diamondbacks to five singles. He primarily kept the ball on the ground to avoid any damage and also generated 12 swinging strikes on 89 pitches. Freeland has delivered a 1.57 ERA with a 19:5 K:BB across his last four starts spanning 23 frames.
May 1, 2022
Grabs first win of 2022
Freeland (1-3) earned the win Sunday, allowing one run on four hits and one walk over seven innings against the Reds. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Brandon Drury touched Freeland up for a homer in the fifth inning, but that was the extent of the damage against the left-hander. While Freeland's 1-3 record and 4.85 ERA on the season don't look great, he now has a 2.12 ERA and 14:3 K:BB over his last three starts (17 innings), including two starts at Coors Field in that stretch. He still has to be considered a high-risk option given his track record as he heads into a road start in Arizona next weekend.

Fans seven in loss
Freeland (0-3) allowed four runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk over five innings Monday, striking out seven and taking a loss against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Freeland allowed three unearned runs in the third inning after an error by Jose Iglesias, including a two-run double from Kyle Schwarber. He then coughed up a solo shot to Bryce Harper in the fifth before striking out the last three batters he faced. Despite turning in an overall shaky performance, Freeland lowered his season ERA to 6.16 with a 17:6 K:BB through four starts. He's projected to take on the Reds at home this weekend.
Apr 20, 2022
Best start of the year
Freeland struck out three in five innings, allowing two runs on six hits, a walk and a hit batsman in a 6-5 win Tuesday against Philadelphia. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Freeland pitched around trouble throughout the night and allowed a run in both the first and fourth innings. He left with a 3-2 lead and in position to earn his first win of the season. It was announced earlier Tuesday that the Denver native signed a five-year, $64.5 million extension. The 28-year-old followed that up with his best start of the season, lowering his ERA to 7.71. He's scheduled to pitch against the Phillies again on Sunday in Philadelphia.

Nets long-term deal with Colorado
Freeland agreed Tuesday with the Rockies on a five-year, $64.5 million contract, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. The deal also includes a player option for 2027.
ANALYSIS
Freeland and the Rockies had been scheduled for an arbitration hearing in late May following their failure to agree to a deal in spring training, but after further discussions, the two sides were able to find common ground on a long-term pact. As a Colorado native, Freeland likely has more interest in pitching at altitude in Coors Field than the majority of established starters around the league, so it made sense for the Rockies to keep the homegrown starter on the books through at least the 2026 season. Freeland has been blitzed for 10 runs across nine innings in his first two starts of 2022, but he was effective for most of his first five seasons in the majors after factoring in his unfavorable home environment. He turned in ERA- marks of 91 or lower in four of the past five seasons, with 100 being the league average after accounting for park factors. Now that he's resolved his contract situation, Freeland will return to the mound to make his third start of the season Tuesday against the Phillies at Coors F

Endures another rough outing
Freeland (0-2) took the loss against the Cubs on Thursday, tossing 5.1 innings and allowing five runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out one.
ANALYSIS
In Freeland's Opening Day loss to the Dodgers, he started off strong with three shutout frames before wilting in the fourth. It was the opposite story Thursday, as the left-hander was tagged for three first-inning runs before settling down to keep Chicago off the scoreboard for the following four frames. However, his night ended on a sour note as four of the five batters he faced in the sixth reached base, resulting in two more runs and the hook after 73 pitches. Freeland has thus far allowed 10 earned runs over nine innings to begin the season, emphasizing his lack of reliability in fantasy. He'll face another tough test his next time out as he's tentatively slated to face the Phillies at Coors Field next Tuesday.
Apr 8, 2022
Crushed for five runs
Freeland (0-1) yielded five runs on five hits and two walks over 3.2 innings Friday, striking out six and taking a loss against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Freeland rolled through three shutout frames before the Dodgers jumped him in the fourth. He allowed three-run, including a two-run single by Gavin Lux, before he left the game and was charged with two runs that he left on base. The 6-foot-4 lefty is now 4-10 with a 4.17 ERA in his career against the Dodgers. Freeland is lined up to face the Cubs at home next week.
Apr 1, 2022
Named Opening Day starter
Freeland has been named the starter for the Rockies' Opening Day matchup against the Dodgers on April 8, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland started Friday's Cactus League game against the Mariners and gave up an unearned run on three hits and no walks while striking out two in 5.1 innings. The southpaw had been working on his changeup earlier in camp, but he gave up at least three runs in each of his first two spring starts while testing the pitch. Freehand made 23 starts for the Rockies last year and posted a 4.33 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 120.2 innings.

Pitches into seventh
Freeland (7-8) picked up the win Tuesday against the Nationals after pitching 6.2 innings and giving up one run. He allowed six hits and walked four while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old tossed six scoreless innings before surrendering a bases loaded walk to Lane Thomas in the seventh inning, driving in Yadiel Hernandez for the only run against him in the contest. He has now notched three consecutive quality starts, posting a 1.93 ERA and 2-0 record over those outings. Freeland is not expected to make another start before the regular season ends Sunday, finishing his year with seven wins, a 4.33 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 105 strikeouts in 120.2 innings.

Turns in quality start
Freeland allowed three earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out five across six innings Thursday against the Dodgers. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Though Freeland allowed eight hits, only one went for extra bases. All three of the earned runs against him came in the second inning, when he allowed three consecutive hits to begin the frame. However, he held the Dodgers scoreless for the rest of his outing and has now allowed three or fewer earned runs in six of his last eight starts -- three of which have come at home. For the season, Freeland has a 4.50 ERA with a 102:34 K:BB across 114 innings.
Sep 11, 2021
Handed loss Saturday
Freeland (5-8) allowed four runs on five hits and four walks with three strikeouts in six innings, taking the loss Saturday versus Philadelphia.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw was cruising until he allowed three runs in the fourth inning and a solo shot to Jean Segura in the fifth. Freeland has given up 11 runs in his last 10.1 innings, taking losses in each of his last two starts. He was 4-0 across five outings in August, but regression has taken hold again. Freeland takes a 4.76 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 90:32 K:BB into next week's projected road start in Washington.
Sep 6, 2021
Struggles on the mound
Freeland (5-7) was ambushed for seven runs and picked up a loss against the Giants on Monday. He gave up nine hits while walking three and striking out six in 4.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander struggled with the long ball in this one as he surrendered four of them in the contest including two by Thairo Estrada. He had only surrendered four total home runs in his last seven starts coming into Monday, a stretch where he posted a 3.25 ERA over 36 innings on the mound. He'll look to return to form in his next start Saturday versus the Phillies.
Sep 5, 2021
Cleared to start Monday
Freeland (hip) has been confirmed as the Rockies' starting pitcher for Monday's game against the Giants, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The lefty's most recent outing Sept. 1 against the Rangers was cut short due to a left hip impingement, but after receiving an injection to address the injury, Freeland looks to be pain free heading into the upcoming week. He was able to throw a bullpen session over the weekend without any discomfort, so Freeland shouldn't face any limitations heading into what's shaping up to be a two-start week. Freeland tentatively lines up to make his second turn of the week Sept. 11 in Philadelphia.
Sep 2, 2021
Should make next start
Freeland received an injection to alleviate inflammation in his hip Thursday and is expected to be ready for his next turn through the rotation, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland exited Wednesday's start after five batters due to a left hip impingement, but he may not be forced to miss his next start after receiving treatment. The left-hander tentatively lines up to face the Giants early next week, and he should throw a bullpen session over the weekend to gain final clearance.
Sep 1, 2021
Dealing with hip issue
Freeland exited Wednesday's start against the Rangers with a left hip impingement, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland faced only five batters and threw 21 pitches prior to being remove from the contest, and he ended up allowing one run on zero hits with two walks and a strikeout in one frame. It's not believed to be a serious injury, so there's a chance he's able to make his next scheduled turn through the rotation versus the Giants early next week.
Sep 1, 2021
Leaves start early
Freeland was removed in the second inning of his start Wednesday against the Rangers with an apparent injury, Chris Halicke of SI.com reports. He retired three hitters and walked two of the five batters he faced before departing.
ANALYSIS
Freeland lasted only 21 pitches before heading to the dugout after a meeting with a trainer on the mound. An explanation for his early exit isn't yet known, but expect manager Bud Black to provide more details on the matter after the game.
Aug 28, 2021
Logs another quality start
Freeland (5-6) earned the win over the Dodgers on Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and no walks while striking out seven over six innings.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander didn't allow a formidable Dodgers offense to interrupt a strong stretch that has seen him pick up eight quality starts over his past 12 appearances. Freeland threw 61 of 94 pitches for strikes and punched out seven batters, tying his second-highest total this season. The only two runs against him came via solo home runs by Will Smith and Trea Turner in the third inning. Freeland had a 9.58 ERA over his first five starts of the campaign but has turned things around since, lowering his season ERA to 4.17 with Friday's win. His next start is likely to take place in Texas next week.
Aug 22, 2021
Whiffs season-high 10
Freeland took a no-decision in Saturday's 5-2 win over the Diamondbacks after striking out a season-high 10 over seven innings. He surrendered two runs on six hits and a walk in the 90-pitch start.
ANALYSIS
Freeland submitted one of the best outings of his season -- at Coors Field, no less -- but he had the misfortune of the Rockies' bats not waking up until the late innings. The southpaw departed with a 2-0 deficit before Colorado tied the score in the bottom of the eighth, then won the game on Elias Diaz's walkoff, three-run home run. Though Freeland was denied a fourth straight win, he continued to build his case for being one of the more underrated fantasy standouts of the season with another strong performance. Over his last 11 outings, Freeland has turned in seven quality starts while posting a 2.53 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 8.6 K/9.
Aug 15, 2021
Fans six in win
Freeland (4-6) allowed one unearned run on five hits and two walks while striking out six across six innings, earning the win over the Giants on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Freeland gave up a run in the second inning on a Donovan Solano single. It was the only run he allowed through six innings. The 28-year-old won his last three outings. He has a 4.40 ERA and 1.42 WHIP with 63 strikeouts in 77.2 innings. His next start is scheduled for Friday against the Diamondbacks.

Earns second straight win
Freeland (3-6) allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings Sunday, striking out six and earning a win over Miami.
ANALYSIS
It wasn't the most impressive outing for Freeland but Colorado's offense put up 13 runs to help him snag his second win of the month. He gave up just one run through four innings before Miami broke through to score three in the fifth, including a two-run double by Lewis Brinson. It was Freeland's first time giving up more than three runs in an outing since June 16 and he's now sporting a 4.65 ERA through 14 starts. He's lined up to take the mound in San Francisco next weekend.

Cleared for Sunday
Freeland (foot) is slated to start Sunday's game against the Marlins, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland exited early in his most recent start Tuesday against the Cubs after taking a line drive off his left foot, but he avoided any structural damage and escaped with little more than a bruise. According to Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette, Freeland threw a side session Friday without issue, so the lefty shouldn't face any limitations in his return to action this weekend.

Freeland (2-6) had X-rays come back negative on his left foot after leaving Tuesday's start against the Cubs after five innings, nick. The lefty allowed two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and zero walks to earn the victory.
ANALYSIS
Freeland was struck by a line drive during the fifth inning and was pulled at 66 pitches after completing the frame. The 28-year-old was apparently a bit hobbled following the contest due to the bruise, but the team hopes he'll be ready for his next turn through the rotation, which tentatively lines up for Sunday versus Miami.

Managing bruised foot
Freeland was removed from Tuesday's start against the Cubs with a left foot contusion, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander was struck by a batted ball on the left foot during the fifth inning, and he was removed after completing the frame. Freeland pitched well before being pulled and gave up two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and zero walks. He's in line for the victory with the Rockies leading 11-2 during the sixth inning. It's unclear if the issue will affect his availability for his next turn through the rotation, which tentatively lines up for Sunday versus the Marlins.

Draws short straw again
Freeland (1-6) lost Thursday's 3-0 affair with the Padres, allowing one run on eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts in four innings.
ANALYSIS
Freeland allowed his lone run on back-to-back doubles to leadoff the game and only encountered trouble again in the sixth when San Diego ran into two outs at the plate. Freeland has pitched to a superb 2.40 ERA in five July starts though he's been tagged as the loser in his last four turns thanks to receiving an anemic six total runs of support in July.
Jul 25, 2021
Tough-luck loser
Freeland (1-5) lost Saturday's 1-0 contest against the Dodgers, allowing one run on five hits with six strikeouts in seven innings.
ANALYSIS
Freeland navigated a potent Los Angeles and required just 89 pitches to endure seven strong innings, but ended up the loser after Colorado managed just two hits against Los Angeles' staff. The lefty has lost three straight starts despite a solid 3.50 ERA over the stretch and will look to get back in the win column against San Diego next week.
Jul 18, 2021
Fires quality start despite loss
Freeland (1-4) allowed three earned runs on six hits while striking out four across six innings, taking the loss to the Dodgers on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Freeland provided a quality start, but the Rockies could not support him with enough runs to win. He allowed two doubles and a home run to Mookie Betts, which led to most of the runs scored against him. After a rough start, he's allowed just six runs over his last 28 innings pitched. The 28-year-old has a 5.36 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP in 48.2 innings.
Jul 12, 2021
Scheduled to pitch over weekend
Freeland (finger) is listed as the Rockies' probable starting pitcher for Sunday's game against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Freeland's final start of the first half July 9 against the Padres ended early due to a blister on his pitching hand, but the All-Star break will afford the southpaw plenty of time to recover. Assuming he's able to complete a bullpen session later this week without incident, he'll take the hill for the third game of the Rockies' series with the Dodgers.
Jul 10, 2021
Dealing with blister
Freeland exited Friday's game after five innings due to a blister on his left middle finger, Daniel Guerrero of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The lefty certainly had more in the tank after throwing just 64 pitches but could not continue pitching with the blister. It's unclear how severe the blister is, but the looming All-Star break gives Freeland some additional recovery time before his next scheduled start.
Jul 10, 2021
Loss in brief outing
Freeland (1-3) lost Friday's 4-2 game against San Diego, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts in five innings.
ANALYSIS
Freeland had allowed just a single run through five innings but was removed after permitting the first two batters in the sixth to reach base and reliever Tyler Kinley allowed both to score to saddle Freeland with the loss. The lefty only threw 64 pitches in the short appearance and surrendered three runs or less for the fourth straight start.
Jul 4, 2021
Fires six shutout innings
Freeland fired six scoreless innings on three hits and three walks while striking out three in the win over the Cardinals on Saturday. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Freeland has not allowed a run in his last two starts. He has a 0.53 ERA and 17 strikeouts in his last 17 innings pitched. However, the 28-year-old still has a 5.50 ERA and 1.67 WHIP with just a 6.9 K/9 over 37.2 innings this season. His successful start shows that his hamstring injury isn't much of an issue.
Jul 3, 2021
Cleared to start Saturday
Freeland (hamstring) will stay on turn in the Colorado rotation to start Saturday's game against the Cardinals at Coors Field, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Rockies will have Triple-A Albuquerque pitcher Jose Mujica on standby as a member of the taxi squad to make a spot start if Freeland incurs a setback leading up to the 9:10 p.m ET opening pitch, but the team's medical staff appears confident in the health of the southpaw's left hamstring. Freeland, who exited his last start Monday against the Pirates due to hamstring cramping, was able to complete a bullpen session Thursday without incident.
Jul 1, 2021
Throws bullpen Thursday
Freeland (hamstring) will throw a bullpen session Thursday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland left Monday's start with hamstring cramping, but he played catch from 120 feet Wednesday and was able to continue his normal progression between starts Thursday. Assuming he feels good after his bullpen session, the southpaw will likely be ready to start against the Cardinals on Saturday.
Jun 30, 2021
Plays catch Thursday
Freeland (hamstring) was spotted playing catch Wednesday from about 120 feet, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After cruising through five scoreless innings Monday against the Pirates, Freeland's start ended early when he experienced cramping in his left hamstring. The fact that Freeland was able to throw two days later suggests the hamstring won't be much of a concern moving forward, so the lefty looks like he'll be ready to pitch by the time his next turn in the rotation comes up Saturday against the Cardinals. He'll likely throw a bullpen session Thursday before the Rockies sign off on him starting this weekend.
Jun 28, 2021
Avoids significant injury
Freeland left Monday's start against the Pirates due to cramping, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Initial reports are positive for the southpaw after exiting early Monday, and the team is optimistic this won't be a long-term injury, per Harding. He'll be considered day-to-day moving forward.
Jun 28, 2021
Leaves start with injury
Freeland exited Monday's start against the Pirates with an apparent left hamstring injury, Kyle Newman of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander helped himself by reaching twice on bunt attempts, but he appeared to tweak his hamstring running from first to third base during the bottom of the fifth inning. Freeland was working on a shutout prior to the injury with three hits and a walk allowed while striking out seven over five frames. It's unclear if the injury will affect his next turn through the rotation, which lines up for this weekend versus the Cardinals.
Jun 23, 2021
Quality start in no-decision
Freeland didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against the Mariners after tossing six innings of one-run ball, giving up five hits and a walk while fanning seven.
ANALYSIS
Freeland has been struggling mightily during most of the season, but he delivered an improved effort this time around and delivered his first quality start of the campaign. This was just the second time Freeland allowed less than three runs in an outing, but he still owns an inflated 7.76 ERA across six outings (26.2 innings). He's scheduled to take the ball again during the weekend series at the Brewers.
Jun 16, 2021
Struggles persist
Freeland allowed five runs on nine hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings versus San Diego on Wednesday. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Freeland turned in another lackluster outing, which saw him allow home runs to Fernando Tatis and Trent Grisham in the third inning. Across his last three starts, Freeland has given up 19 runs (18 earned) in 12.2 innings. The southpaw has a 9.58 ERA, 2.27 WHIP and 12:11 K:BB in 20.2 innings overall after missing almost all of the first two months of the season with a shoulder injury. His next turn in the rotation is projected to be a decent road matchup in Seattle.
Jun 11, 2021
Hit hard in Cincinnati
Freeland (0-2) allowed nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits and a walk with two strikeouts in four innings, taking the loss versus Cincinnati on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Freeland allowed one home run in each of the first five innings -- he was relieved by Yency Almonte after Tyler Stephenson's solo shot to lead off the fifth inning. Friday was by far the worst of Freeland's four starts this year. The southpaw has struggled to a 9.00 ERA, 2.12 WHIP and 9:9 K:BB across 17 innings. A lack of better starting options on the major-league roster keeps Freeland in the rotation. He is projected for an unfavorable home start versus San Diego next week.
Jun 6, 2021
Gives up five runs in loss
Freeland (0-1) took the loss against Oakland on Saturday, tossing five innings and allowing five runs on 10 hits and one walk. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Freeland fell behind early, giving up a two-run homer to Matt Olson in the first inning. The southpaw gave up another homer and two total runs in the third, then surrendered another run in the fifth before departing. Freeland did pitch a season-high five frames, but he drove his ERA up to 6.23 with the rough outing. His next start is tentatively scheduled for Friday at Cincinnati.
May 30, 2021
Gives up three runs in no-decision
Freeland allowed three runs on five hits and four walks while striking out one in four innings during Sunday's win over the Pirates. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Freeland gave up just one run in his season debut Tuesday, but he was slightly less effective against Pittsburgh. The southpaw tossed two scoreless innings to begin Sunday's game, but the Pirates were able to manufacture runs in the third and fourth innings prior to Freeland's removal. Freeland hasn't lasted more than two innings in either of his first two starts of the year and has had to settle for no-decisions in each appearance. He tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Athletics on Saturday.
May 25, 2021
Fans five in season debut
Freeland did not factor into the decision during Tuesday's loss to the Mets, allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out five through four innings.
ANALYSIS
Making his 2021 debut after getting sidelined from a left shoulder strain during Spring Training, Freeland turned in a solid outing. Although he was pitching against an injury-ridden Mets lineup, the left-hander coughed up just one run in the first frame, following a leadoff single and walk that led to an RBI groundout by James McCann. Overall, he threw 74 pitches, including 38 strikes. The 28-year-old is projected to make his second start of the season Sunday at Pittsburgh.
May 25, 2021
Comes off IL
The Rockies reinstated Freeland (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list prior to his start Tuesday against the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Colorado optioned reliever Lucas Gilbreath to Triple-A Albuquerque following Monday's series opener to clear room on the 26-man active roster for Freeland. The 28-year-old southpaw will be making his 2021 debut in Flushing after he required a rehab of nearly two months when he strained his left shoulder late in spring training. Freeland built up to 79 pitches and six innings in his final rehab start with Albuquerque on Thursday, so he shouldn't face any major restrictions in Tuesday's outing.
May 23, 2021
Set for season debut Tuesday
Freeland (shoulder) is on track to start Tuesday against the Mets, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old covered six innings during a rehab start with Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday, and he should remain on a five-day schedule to start Tuesday. Freeland has been sidelined by the shoulder strain since late March and will have a tough time securing the win in his season debut with Jacob deGrom (side) also poised to return from the injured list for the Mets.
May 21, 2021
Successful rehab outing
Freeland allowed one run on two hits and a walk while striking out four across six innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland threw 79 pitches in his second rehab start at the level, an increase from the 66 he threw in his first outing. Assuming he doesn't suffer any unexpected setbacks, Freeland could be in line to make his season debut Tuesday at the Mets.
May 17, 2021
Another rehab start on tap
Freeland (shoulder) will make another rehab start for Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland made his first rehab start Saturday and allowed one run on two hits and a walk in four innings against Triple-A El Paso. He threw 66 pitches during the outing and was charged with an unlucky loss. If his second rehab appearance goes well, the left-hander could make his season debut in the near future.
May 11, 2021
Making rehab start Saturday
Freeland (shoulder) will start a Triple-A game Saturday in El Paso, Michael Spencer of CBS Denver reports.
ANALYSIS
The lefty suffered a left shoulder strain late in spring training and is finally nearing a return to full health. Assuming a successful rehab assignment, Freeland will likely fill a spot in the Rockies' rotation once activated.
May 9, 2021
Four rehab innings on tap
Freeland (shoulder) will throw four innings Tuesday or Wednesday at Colorado's spring training site, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The-27-year-old pitched in a simulated game last Tuesday and appears to be in the final stages of his recovery before advancing to games. Manager Bud Black previously indicated Freeland likely will require a minor-league rehab assignment, so the left-hander is unlikely to be activated from the injured list this week.
May 5, 2021
Another sim game on tap
Freeland is scheduled to pitch in a simulated game in St. Louis this weekend, Kyle Newman of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland's left shoulder checked out fine after he faced hitters Tuesday, so he'll join the Rockies on their road trip and complete another simulated game, presumably Sunday. Manager Bud Black suggested that Freeland would likely require a minor-league rehab assignment before rejoining the Rockies, so don't expect him to be activated from the 10-day injured list until the second half of May.
May 4, 2021
Takes part in sim game
Freeland (shoulder) is pitching in a simulated game Tuesday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland's progression to facing hitters is a positive sign as he looks to move past the left shoulder strain that has sidelined him since late in spring training. The southpaw may require at least one more rehab start or simulated-game appearance Tuesday before the Rockies are comfortable activating him from the 10-day injured list, perhaps at some point late next week.
Apr 27, 2021
Throws another bullpen session
Freeland (shoulder) completed a bullpen session Tuesday and could throw a simulated game early next week, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Bud Black said the bullpen session was "outstanding," so the left-hander appears to be progressing well in his rehab from the shoulder strain. Freeland continues to build up his arm strength, and facing live hitters should be one of the final hurdles before being cleared for his season debut.
Apr 24, 2021
Throws 25 pitches Saturday
Freeland (shoulder) threw 25 pitches in a bullpen session Saturday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland has been sidelined for just over a month due to a shoulder strain, and he threw off a mound for the first time Friday. He threw at about an 85 percent effort level in Saturday's bullpen session, and he didn't have any issues with his shoulder afterward. While Freeland's recent progress has been encouraging, he still doesn't have a clear timetable to return to action since he'll need to build his arm strength back up.
Apr 23, 2021
Advances to mound work
Freeland (shoulder) threw off a mound Friday and will throw a full bullpen session Saturday, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland suffered a shoulder strain exactly one month ago and was initially expected to miss at least a month. That estimate may not be too far off, but he still has some work to do as he builds his arm strength back up and doesn't have a clear timeline for his return to action.
Apr 15, 2021
Increasing intensity
Freeland (shoulder) has increased his throwing intensity recently but still hasn't thrown off a mound, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland recently resumed playing light catch and has continued to make progress over the past week. He joined the Rockies for their current road trip in Los Angeles, but he still doesn't have a timetable to return to game action. The left-hander will have to get back on the mound and build back up before he's cleared to make his season debut. Chi Chi Gonzalez should continue to serve as a member of the starting rotation while Freeland is sidelined.
Apr 10, 2021
Playing light catch
Freeland (shoulder) has resumed playing light catch, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland is slated to miss at least a month after he suffered a left shoulder strain in late March, but he recently resumed throwing. The southpaw remains without a timetable to return, and Chi Chi Gonzalez should continue to fill in as a starter in Freeland's absence.
Apr 1, 2021
Placed on injured list
Freeland (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday, Kyle Newman of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland is expected to miss at least a month due to a left shoulder strain, so his move to the injured list is simply procedural. Chi Chi Gonzalez was seen as the favorite to serve as the fifth starter in Freeland's absence, but newly-acquired Jhoulys Chacin could claim a back-end rotation spot early in the season until Freeland returns.
Mar 25, 2021
Out at least one month
Freeland (shoulder) will be sidelined for at least a month, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland exited Tuesday's spring game against Oakland with a left shoulder strain, and manager Bud Black announced Thursday that the southpaw will miss at least a month. The team initially feared that Freeland's injury was worse, but the Rockies were encouraged by the results of his imaging. Chi Chi Gonzalez or Ryan Castellani could now be in the mix to start for the Rockies during the first month of the regular season.
Mar 23, 2021
Suffers shoulder strain
Freeland left Tuesday's game against Oakland with a left shoulder strain, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The severity of the strain is not yet clear, but Freeland appeared to be in some pain after throwing a pitch. Even a minor shoulder issue would likely open up a few spot starts to begin the season, though it's quite possible he's shut down for an extended period.
Mar 23, 2021
Exits in pain
Freeland left Tuesday's game against the Athletics in obvious pain after throwing a pitch, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland grabbed his arm after throwing a pitch in the dirt. It's not yet clear what sort of injury he suffered, but his initial reaction made it seem as though it isn't a mild one. More information should be available following further tests.
Mar 14, 2021
Tosses four scoreless frames
Freeland allowed three hits and no walks while striking out four over four scoreless innings in Saturday's spring win over the Mariners. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Freeland only used his fastball and changeup during his spring debut, but he added his slider to his pitch selection during Saturday's start, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. The southpaw struck out a batter in each of his four innings Saturday and only allowed a runner to reach second base once. Freeland will focus on his curveball during his next appearance as he continues to build up ahead of Opening Day.
Mar 8, 2021
Effective in spring debut
Freeland allowed two hits and one walk while striking out two over three scoreless innings in Monday's spring loss to the Reds. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Freeland allowed baserunners in the first and third innings during his Cactus League debut Monday, but he forced a pair of double plays en route to a scoreless outing. The southpaw has been dominant at forcing double plays over his career, and he led the majors with 14 double plays induced in 2020. "It's executing your pitches down in the zone and using that difference in velocity between pitches to keep them off balance and get weak contact on the ground," Freeland said. "I'm looking to get weak contact on the ground to allow my defense to work and get two-for-one outs." He only used fastballs and changeups during Monday's outing but plans to incorporate more pitches throughout spring training.
Jan 15, 2021
Avoids arbitration with Colorado
Freeland signed a one-year, $5.025 million contract with the Rockies on Friday to avoid arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander rebounded last season with a 4.33 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 46:23 K:BB over 70.2 inning after posting a 6.73 ERA in 2019. Freeland is essentially a lock to begin 2021 in Colorado's starting rotation.
Sep 28, 2020
Chased early in season finale
Freeland (2-3) took the loss Sunday against the Diamondbacks, allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks across 2.1 innings. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Freeland was fortunate to allow just a pair of runs in the first after allowing three hits and a walk to the first four Arizona hitters. He temporarily settled down to toss a scoreless second, but completely unraveled in the third. A Ketel Marte walk and Kole Calhoun homer made it 4-0 before three more hits and a fielding miscue chased the southpaw with one out in the third. Freeland concludes the campaign with a 4.33 ERA and 1.42 WHIP to go along with a 46:23 K:BB across 70.2 innings pitched.
Sep 23, 2020
Manages no-decision
Freeland pitched six innings against San Francisco on Tuesday, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out one and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Freeland navigated through six frames and yielded only two runs despite being far from dominant. He threw only 59 of 101 pitches for strikes and induced a mere eight swings-and-misses en route to his lowest strikeout total of the season. Still, the left-hander managed the third quality start in his last four outings and avoided a second-straight loss. Freeland has enjoyed a fairly strong season considering his home ballpark, registering a 3.69 ERA over 12 starts. He's slated to take the mound in the final game of the regular season at Arizona on Sunday.
Sep 18, 2020
Takes second loss
Freeland (2-2) was charged with the loss Thursday against the Dodgers after surrendering four runs on six hits and a pair of walks while striking out five across 6.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Freeland turned in a decent outing against a volatile Dodgers lineup at Coors Field. The 27-year-old blanked Los Angeles until a difficult fourth inning, when he gave up a solo home run to Corey Seager and allowed another run to score after hitting Enrique Hernandez with a pitch. He was pulled with one out during a tied game in the seventh frame after serving up a double and a walk. Unfortunately, the bullpen allowed both of his baserunners to score, giving the Dodgers the lead for good. Freeland, who was coming off back-to-back quality starts, pitched into the seventh inning for the third time this season and threw 61 of 96 pitches for strikes. The southpaw will take a 3.75 ERA and 1.32 WHIP into a Tuesday matchup at San Francisco.
Sep 13, 2020
Notches quality start
Freeland hurled six innings against the Angels on Saturday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Following two ugly outings between Aug. 28 and Sept. 2, Freeland has bounced back with consecutive quality starts. He held the Angels mostly at bay Saturday, giving up only one extra-base hit before departing in a tie game. The southpaw has pitched at least six innings in eight of his 10 starts this season and has registered a 3.54 ERA in spite of the aforementioned pair of rough outings. He'll next take the mound at home against the Dodgers on Thursday.
Sep 8, 2020
Back on track in no-decision
Freeland pitched six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out six in a no-decision versus the Padres on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Freeland dueled with Dinelson Lamet for most of the game. It was a good bounce-back effort for Freeland, who had allowed four runs in each of his last two starts. The southpaw lowered his ERA to 3.60 with a 1.36 WHIP and 34:14 K:BB across 50 innings this season. The 27-year-old lines up for his next start versus the Angels on Sunday.
Sep 3, 2020
Another rough outing
Freeland didn't factor in the decision Wednesday against the Giants after allowing four runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and one walk over two innings.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander surrendered only 32 hits and 12 runs across his first six starts, but in his last two outings he's given up 19 hits and eight runs over 6.1 innings. Freeland has a 4.09 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 28:11 K:BB over 44 innings and has a tough matchup early next week in San Diego.
Aug 29, 2020
Struggles in no-decision
Freeland took a no-decision during Friday's loss to the Padres, surrendering four runs on 11 hits while striking out two across 4.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Freeland held the Padres scoreless until the fourth inning, when he allowed an RBI single to Jorge Mateo. The 27-year-old then unraveled in the fifth, giving up four hits including back-to-back doubles, resulting in three runs. With one out and the score tied, Freeland was replaced with reliever Jeff Hoffman. The southpaw threw 47-of-77 pitches for strikes while tying a career-worst with 11 hits. On the bright side, Freeland didn't issue any walks for the second time this season, although it was his first non-quality start. Freeland has now recorded four no-decisions in his last five outings. He'll bring a 3.43 ERA and 1.26 WHIP into a Wednesday contest against the Giants.
Aug 27, 2020
Start vs. Diamondbacks postponed
Freeland's scheduled start against the Diamondbacks on Thursday has been postponed, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
This marks one of a handful of postponements Thursday as teams protest the recent police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. It's not yet known whether the Rockies will simply push Freeland's start to Friday or skip his turn in the rotation.
Aug 23, 2020
Fans six in no-decision
Freeland gave up three runs on four hits and three walks and struck out six over six innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
The Rockies gave Freeland a lead in the top of the seventh inning, but he loaded the bases before reliever Yency Almonte allowed an inherited runner to score in the bottom half of the inning. That left Freeland with a no-decision, his third in his last four starts. The southpaw has a 2.87 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 24 strikeouts across 37.2 innings this season. Freeland is expected to make his next start Thursday in Arizona.
Aug 18, 2020
Quality start in loss
Freeland (2-1) allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out five over six innings, but took the loss Monday versus the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Freeland gave up a two-run double to Carlos Correa in a tough first inning, and that was enough to stick the southpaw with his first loss this year. Through 31.2 innings, Freeland has a 2.56 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 18 strikeouts. Monday was his first appearance where he didn't walk a batter. He'll hope for more run support when he faces the Dodgers on Saturday.
Aug 12, 2020
Seven strong innings Tuesday
Freeland allowed two runs on seven hits and walk and struck out two over seven innings in a no-decision Tuesday versus the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Freeland dueled with Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen effectively across seven innings before both bullpens had some dodgy moments. The only damage on Freeland's line came in the form of solo home runs by Christian Walker and Carson Kelly. The 27-year-old Freeland has a 2.45 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 13 strikeouts across 25.2 innings this season. He's expected to make his next start at home Sunday versus the Rangers.
Aug 6, 2020
Escapes with effective start
Freeland allowed three earned runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out two across 6.2 innings Thursday against the Giants. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Freeland pitched six scoreless innings despite allowing at least one runner to reach base in five of those frames. However, he ran into trouble when he was put back on the mound in the seventh inning, as he allowed three consecutive hits with two outs -- the final one being a three-run home run by Mauricio Dubon. Despite the rough ending to his outing, Freeland largely continued his effective work on the mound this season, as he now has a 2.41 ERA across 18.2 innings. He's scheduled to make his next start Tuesday against Arizona.
Aug 1, 2020
Spins gem Saturday
Freeland (2-0) earned the win versus the Padres on Saturday, pitching six scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits and a walk while striking four.
ANALYSIS
It was a masterful performance for Freeland, and plenty of run support from the Rockies allowed him to cruise to the win. The southpaw has a 1.50 ERA and 0.83 WHIP with nine strikeouts in 12 innings to start the year. It's still tough to trust Rockies starters in general at home, but Freeland's been strong in his first two turns through the rotation. A home start versus the Giants awaits Freeland on Thursday.
Jul 27, 2020
Goes six innings in win
Freeland (1-0) tossed six innings Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits and earning a win over the Rangers. He struck out five batters and walked three.
ANALYSIS
Freeland served up a homer to Joey Gallo in the second inning and allowed another run in the third but was able to settle in after that. After a disastrous 2019 campaign, it was a promising start to 2020 for the 6-foot-4 southpaw. Expect to see Freeland take the mound again at home against San Diego next weekend.
Jul 20, 2020
Opens season as No. 3 starter
Rockies manager Bud Black confirmed Freeland will start the team's third game of the season Friday in Texas, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After turning in a 2.85 ERA over 33 starts in 2018, Freeland regressed in a major way in 2019, submitting a 6.73 ERA and 1.58 WHIP across 22 outings. The massive decline in performance wasn't enough to prevent Freeland from breaking summer camp with a spot in the middle of the rotation, which speaks to the Rockies' lack of attractive alternative starting options more than anything. In deeper leagues, Freeland may be a more reliable fantasy option in favorable road matchups, and at least for his first start, he should benefit from the Rangers' new ballpark (Globe Life Field) likely playing more pitcher-friendly than its predecessor. Like most starters, Freeland is best left avoided when he takes the hill at Coors Field, where he sports a 4.34 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 7.2 K/9 in 228.1 career innings.

Starting Sunday
Freeland (back) is starting Sunday's Cactus League game against the Indians, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander exited his Feb. 27 outing with back spasms, but he'll return to the mound after missing one scheduled turn through the rotation. Barring a setback, Freeland's brief absence shouldn't impact his preparations for Opening Day.

Should return Sunday
Freeland (back) indicated that his condition has improved in recent days and that he expects to pitch in Sunday's Cactus League game against the Indians, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland is slated to complete a bullpen session Thursday, so if his back responds well to the activity, he should be cleared to return to action over the weekend. The southpaw was only shut down for about a week with the injury, so he still looks like he'll be ready to go for Opening Day.

Likely missing next spring start
Freeland (back) feels "pretty good" Friday, but he's still expected to miss his next Cactus League start, Kyle Newman of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander exited Thursday's game versus the A's with back spasms, but it appears he's not dealing with a severe injury. Freeland's next start was likely to come early next week, but it appears he'll take a bit of extra time to get fully healthy before returning to game action.

Exits with back spasms
Freeland was removed from Thursday's Cactus League game against the Athletics due to back spasms, Kyle Newman of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland allowed one run -- a solo home run to Chad Pinder -- across two innings before exiting. Bryan Shaw took over at pitcher for Freeland, who should be considered day-to-day.

Signs without arbitrator
Freeland signed a one-year, $2.875 contract with Colorado on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The oddity of MLB's salary system means that Freeland will see a raise of over 400 percent despite his ERA more than doubling. After posting a 2.85 mark in that category in 2018, he recorded an awful 6.73 ERA last season, while his already mediocre 20.5 percent strikeout rate slipped to 16.7 percent.
Sep 22, 2019
Two scoreless innings in return
Freeland (groin) tossed two scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out one while taking a no-decision versus the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Freeland made the start after missing nearly a month with a groin injury. He gave way to Chi Chi Gonzalez, who would go on to pick up the win. Freeland has a 6.84 ERA and 1.59 WHIP in 101.1 innings this season, taking a large step back from the 2.85 ERA he posted last year. The southpaw may have time to make one more start, in the final series of the year at home against the Brewers.

Reinstated and starting
Freeland (groin) was activated from injured list and will start Saturday against the Dodgers, Kyle Newman of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland was placed on the injured list Aug. 22, but will have the chance to take the ball at least one more time prior to the close of the season. It's unclear how deep into the game the team will let him pitch, though he had been fully stretched out prior to the injury.

Tosses sim game
Freeland (groin) threw a simulated game Tuesday and is nearing a return from the 10-day injured list, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland was placed on the injured list Aug. 22 due to a left groin strain, but he's expected to return before the season comes to an end. The Rockies are hopeful to get him two starts at 2-to-3 innings each during the final few weeks of the 2019 campaign.
Sep 14, 2019
Tosses bullpen session
Freeland (groin) threw a bullpen session Saturday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland has been out with a groin strain since Aug. 20. He's expected to throw live batting practice soon and should still have time to get back into game action prior to the end of the season.
Sep 11, 2019
Could return next week
Freeland (groin) will likely throw one more bullpen session before coming off the 10-day injured list, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
He has now thrown a couple bullpen sessions and could return sometime next week, although he likely won't be fully built back up as a starter. Freeland had a 6.75 ERA in eight second-half starts before landing on the shelf.
Sep 7, 2019
Completes bullpen session
Freeland (groin) threw a bullpen session Saturday, Shaun O'Neill of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old last pitched for the Rockies on Aug. 20 before landing on the injured list with the left groin strain. Manager Bud Black still believes Freeland will be able to rejoin the Rockies before the end of the season, bu there's no specific indication of when might be ready to return.
Sep 2, 2019
Should pitch again in 2019
Freeland (groin) is expected to return from the injured list before the end of the season, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland was placed on the 10-day IL on Aug. 22 with a left groin strain, but he was cleared to resume throwing just four days later. It's unclear at this point whether he's been able to throw off a mound just yet, but the Rockies are confident he'll be activated from the injured list before the season comes to an end.
Aug 26, 2019
Cleared to throw
Freeland (groin) began a throwing program Sunday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland's ability to play catch just three days after being placed on the 10-day injured list suggests that his left groin strain isn't viewed as a major concern. Assuming Freeland incurs no setbacks when he eventually progresses to mound work, he should return from the IL when the roster expands Sept. 1 or shortly thereafter.
Aug 21, 2019
Likely bound for IL
Manager Bud Black said after Tuesday's 8-7 loss to the Diamondbacks that Freeland strained his left groin in the contest and is expected to miss time as a result of the injury, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Based on the low standard he's set this season, Freeland was enjoying a solid outing Tuesday before landing awkwardly on his left leg while following through on a pitch midway through the sixth inning. He had only two earned runs on his ledger before being pulled after 5.1 innings, but reliever Bryan Shaw then came on an allowed the inherited baserunner to score the go-ahead run, leaving Freeland on the hook for his 11th loss. The disappointing outcome is probably the least of Freeland's concerns at the moment as he likely prepares for his second trip to the injured list of the season after previously missing time with a left middle finger blister in late April. The Rockies will likely send Freeland in for further tests Wednesday to determine the severity of his groin strain along with a projected timeline for his return. Colorado will first require a replacement in the rotation for Freeland on Sunday in St. Louis.
Aug 21, 2019
Leaves Tuesday's start
Freeland exited Tuesday's start at Arizona with an apparent leg injury, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeland was pulled with one out in the sixth inning and appeared to be limping when he was looked at by the athletic trainer. He gave up five runs (three earned) on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts prior to leaving the contest.
