Heads to injured list
The Guardians placed Allen on the 15-day injured list Saturday with left shoulder inflammation, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen's trip to the injured list will put an early end to his rookie campaign. He'll finish the season with a 3.81 ERA and 1.40 WHIP alongside 119 strikeouts across 125.1 innings. Michael Kelly was recalled from Triple-A Columbus in a corresponding move.

Early exit in Tuesday's loss
Allen (7-8) took the loss Tuesday, giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks over three innings as the Guardians were downed 7-6 by the Royals. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
The rookie southpaw needed 68 pitches (43 strikes) to record just nine outs, with a two-run homer by MJ Melendez in the first inning setting the tone for the night. Allen hasn't lasted longer than five innings in any of his last five starts, posting a 6.14 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 19:8 K:BB through 22 innings over that stretch, and given that the 25-year-old has already tossed a career-high 145.2 innings between Triple-A and the majors this season, he could be shut down and lose his rotation spot should both Shane Bieber (elbow) and Triston McKenzie (elbow) get activated from the IL for a final start or two before the end of the year.

Allows one run in no-decision
Allen did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing one run on five hits and three walks over five innings against the Giants while striking out five.
ANALYSIS
Allen got himself in a jam right out of the gate, surrendering back-to-back singles to open the first inning, which would eventually lead to one run coming across for San Francisco. However, the rookie left-hander allowed just two hits and two walks from the second inning on and was in line for his eighth win prior to the Giants' late comeback. Allen has now pitched five innings of one-run ball in back-to-back starts, lowering his season ERA to 3.60. On the downside, he's also issued multiple walks in each of those starts and in seven of his last nine outings overall.
Sep 9, 2023
Secures seventh win
Allen allowed a run on three hits and two walks while striking out six over five innings to earn the win Friday over the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Allen had allowed 11 runs over his last 15 innings during his three-start winless streak. He was able to put in a good effort, though his pitch count got up quickly, and he was pulled after 90 pitches (55 strikes). The rookie southpaw is at a 3.68 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 113:43 K:BB through 117.1 innings over 22 starts this season. Allen is tentatively projected to make his next start at home versus the Rangers, though he could pitch in San Francisco if Xzavion Curry gets bumped from Cleveland's rotation next week.
Sep 3, 2023
Allows two homers in no-decision
Allen did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing four runs on seven hits over five innings against the Rays. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
It wasn't the start that Allen hoped for as the right-hander surrendered a leadoff home run to Yandy Diaz in the opening at-bat. He appeared to settle in after that, retiring nine of the next 10 batters he faced before giving up a three-run shot to Christian Bethancourt in the fifth. Allen had not allowed more than one home run in any of his previous five starts and he's now surrendered at least four runs in two straight. On a positive note, he did not issue a walk Saturday for the first time in his last seven outings.
Aug 27, 2023
Jolted by Jays
Allen (6-7) took the loss Saturday, coughing up five runs on six hits and a walk over four innings as the Guardians were downed 8-3 by the Blue Jays. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
The rookie left-hander got staked to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to a Jose Ramirez solo shot, but he immediately squandered it and Cleveland never recovered. It's the first time Allen hasn't lasted at least five innings since late June, and despite Saturday's stumble he sports a 3.80 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 39:17 K:BB through 45 innings since he rejoined the big-league rotation after the All-Star break. He'll look to bounce back in his next outing, likely to come at home next weekend against the Rays.
Aug 20, 2023
Saddled with loss in quality start
Allen (6-6) took the loss Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings against the Tigers. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Allen started off the game with a walk followed by a two-run homer by Spencer Torkleson, but then settled in to allow no more damage. He finished his start by inducing 12 consecutive outs, but the Guardians could only muster one run which left him on the hook for a sixth loss on the season. Allen's next scheduled start is penciled in for Saturday against the Blue Jays in Toronto.
Aug 10, 2023
Takes tough-luck loss
Allen (5-5) took the loss against Toronto on Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out three batters over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Allen induced only three swinging strikes in a less-than-dominant performance, but he kept the Blue Jays off the scoreboard outside of a George Springer solo homer in the first inning. That long ball was enough to give Toronto the win, however, as Cleveland's offense couldn't break through against Kevin Gausman and a trio of Blue Jays relievers. For Allen, the loss was his third in his past four starts, though he probably deserved a better outcome. The rookie is just 5-5 on the campaign, but he's pitched pretty well with a 3.55 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 88:35 K:BB over 91.1 frames.
Aug 4, 2023
Walks four in win
Allen (5-4) allowed two runs on four hits and four walks over six innings Friday, striking out five and earning a win against the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
The only damage against Allen came in the third inning when he coughed up a pair of runs. He'd been tagged with nine runs (four homers) in his previous two outings before Friday's quality start. However, the four walks tied his season high. The 24-year-old rookie dropped his season ERA to 3.65 with an 85:32 K:BB through 86.1 frames. Allenly lined up to face the Blue Jays at home next week.
Jul 30, 2023
Burned in Chicago
Allen (4-4) took the loss Saturday, coughing up five runs on eight hits and three walks over six innings as the Guardians fell 7-2 to the White Sox. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The rookie southpaw didn't get much run support, as Cleveland didn't even get on the board until after Allen had left the game, and while he kept things close through four innings he faded late. He's been tagged for four homers and 10 runs (nine earned) in his last two starts, both against less than fearsome opponents in the White Sox and Royals, and the addition of Noah Syndergaard (finger) and the eventual return of Cal Quantrill (shoulder) could have the clock ticking on Allen's time in the rotation. He'll try to turn things around in his next outing, likely to be a rematch with the ChiSox next weekend back in Cleveland.
Jul 24, 2023
Coughs up five runs
Allen (4-3) allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits over seven innings Monday, striking out five and taking a loss against the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Allen gave up just two runs through five frames before serving up a two-run shot to Salvador Perez in the sixth inning. It was the first homer allowed by Allen since June 15 and it was the first time in his career that he was tagged with multiple home runs. The left-handed rookie fired 12.2 shutout innings over his previous three starts and still owns a solid 3.39 ERA after Monday's hiccup. Allen's next outing is projected to be against the White Sox in Chicago this weekend.
Jul 18, 2023
Excellent in return to Cleveland
Allen (4-2) earned the win Tuesday, allowing just one hit and one walk over five scoreless innings in a 10-1 victory over Pittsburgh. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
It was an excellent showing from Allen after he posted mixed results in his first MLB stint this year. The rookie left-hander lowered his ERA to a solid 3.21 with a 1.37 WHIP and 71:25 K:BB through his first 13 starts (67.1 innings). Allen should see an extended look in Cleveland's rotation while Shane Bieber (elbow) and Cal Quantrill (shoulder) are sidelined. He's currently lined up to face the Phillies this weekend in his next outing.
Jul 18, 2023
Recalled for Tuesday's start
Allen was recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander will make his return to the Guardians' rotation Tuesday against the Pirates, taking the rotation spot vacated by Shane Bieber (elbow). Allen pitched well in his first go-round in the big leagues earlier this season, collecting a 3.47 ERA and 63:24 K:BB over 62.1 innings of work covering 12 starts. The southpaw went just three innings in each of his two starts after being sent back to Columbus, so he might not be ready for a full workload in Pittsburgh.
Jul 14, 2023
Rejoining rotation Tuesday
Allen is expected to start Tuesday against the Pirates, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With Shane Bieber (forearm) likely joining Cal Quantrill and Triston McKenzie on the injured list, Allen should have a secure rotation spot for the foreseeable future. Allen had a 4.76 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 20 strikeouts in 22.2 innings over his five most recent MLB starts.
Jul 2, 2023
Let go by Colorado
Allen was released by the Rockies on Sunday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen joined the Rockies on a minor-league deal last August but didn't join the major-league club during his tenure with the organization. The 26-year-old posted a 7.20 ERA and 20.9 WHIP in 45 innings over 24 relief appearances at Triple-A Albuquerque to begin the year and will now attempt to seek out other opportunities.
Jun 29, 2023
Sent down to Triple-A
Allen was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Thursday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The moves comes one day after Allen needed 98 pitches to cover 3.2 innings against the Royals, albeit in a scoreless appearance. Allen didn't last longer than four frames in any of his last three starts, and while his ERA for the Guardians is sitting at 3.47, his 1.44 WHIP points to some work still needing to be done. Cal Quantrill (shoulder) is slated to return from the injured list this weekend and will take Allen's rotation spot.
Jun 29, 2023
Held to no-decision by pitch count
Allen did not factor in the decision against Kansas City on Wednesday, pitching 3.2 scoreless innings during which he allowed three hits and two walks while striking out five batters.
ANALYSIS
Given that Cleveland won the game in a 14-1 rout, it's particularly disappointing that Allen didn't stick around long enough to garner a victory. The rookie pitched well enough -- he didn't allow any extra-base hits, threw over 60 percent of his pitches for a strike and fanned five batters -- but the Royals racked up 31 foul balls off him to drive his pitch count up to 98 before he could finish the fourth frame. Allen at least managed to lower his ERA to 3.47, but he's now gone four or fewer innings in each of his past three contests despite allowing zero runs in each of the past two.
Jun 22, 2023
Hurls four scoreless innings
Allen did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing two hits and three walks over four scoreless innings against the Athletics. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Allen was able to keep the Athletics off the scoreboard over four innings, but he needed 89 pitches to do it before being relieved by Nick Sandlin to open the fifth. This comes after the lefty lasted just three innings in his previous start and he's now walked seven batters over his last seven innings of work. On a positive note, Allen was able to lower his ERA back down to 3.68 on the season with the scoreless outing and he'll look to bounce back at home next week when the Guardians take on the Royals.
Jun 16, 2023
Struggles again Thursday
Allen allowed five runs on four hits and four walks while striking out two batters over three innings in a no-decision against San Diego on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Allen was spotted a five-run lead before he even took the mound, but he gave three runs back on a Manny Machado homer in the bottom of the first. The left-handed hurler surrendered two more runs in the third and didn't make it back out for the fourth frame. Allen's lack of control was a major factor in his rough outing, as he walked a season-high four batters, two of whom ended up crossing the plate. The rookie started his career with a flourish, posting a 2.76 ERA over his first eight starts, but he's come back down to earth in allowing 10 runs across nine innings over his past two outings. Cal Quantrill (shoulder) has begun throwing bullpens, and Allen's starting spot could be in jeopardy when the former returns to the rotation.
Jun 10, 2023
Escapes with no-decision Friday
Allen didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 10-9 extra-innings win over the Astros, giving up five runs on nine hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Most of the damage came on a three-run shot by Jose Abreu in the first inning, but Allen still exited after 85 pitches (58 strikes) in line for his third loss before Cleveland set an modern era record by coming back from five separate deficits in the seventh inning or later. The rookie southpaw hadn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his first eight big-league starts, and he'll take a 3.31 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 51:15 K:BB through 51.2 innings into his next outing, likely to come next week in San Diego.
Jun 3, 2023
Records another quality start
Allen (3-2) earned the win over Minnesota on Saturday, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four batters over six innings.
ANALYSIS
Allen surrendered a first-inning solo homer to Jorge Polanco but bounced back to allow only one more run over his remaining five frames. The southpaw registered his third straight quality start after notching just one such effort over his first five big-league outings. Allen was initially called up to the majors due to injuries in Cleveland's rotation, but he may have cemented a permanent big-league spot given his strong 2.76 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 47:13 K:BB through 45.2 innings. Even with Triston McKenzie (shoulder) slated to make his season debut Sunday, the Guardians likely won't need to make any decisions about the rotation spots of Allen and fellow rookie Tanner Bibee for at least a few weeks with Cal Quantrill (shoulder) hitting the injured list Friday.
May 29, 2023
10 strikeouts in scoreless outing
Allen (2-2) earned the win Monday, allowing three hits and two walks across seven scoreless innings during a 5-0 victory over Baltimore. He struck out 10.
ANALYSIS
Allen notched career-best marks in hits allowed, runs allowed, innings completed and strikeouts during his finest outing of the campaign thus far. The rookie was called up at the end of April and has been a steady piece of Cleveland's rotation, which continues to deal with numerous injuries. Triston McKenzie (shoulder) and Aaron Civale (oblique) are close to returning from the injured list, but it'll be difficult to demote Allen with the way he's been pitching. Across seven starts (39.2 innings), Allen sports a 2.72 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 43:11 K:BB.
May 23, 2023
Falls to White Sox
Allen (1-2) took the loss Tuesday, allowing four runs (three runs) on seven hits and a walk over 6 innings against the White Sox. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Allen was cruising through his first six innings, allowing just one run on a Yasmani Grandal home run in the fifth. However, he surrendered three hits and a walk without recording an out in the seventh as he took his second loss of the season. It's been an up-and-down rookie campaign so far for Allen -- he's been hurt by a .350 BABIP against, though he's managed to maintain a solid 3.31 ERA with a 1.44 WHIP and 33:9 K:BB through six outings (37.2 innings).
May 18, 2023
Escapes danger
Allen did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing one run on seven hits and one walk over 5.2 innings in a 3-1 win over the White Sox. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Allen nearly had a disaster outing, as he loaded the bases in the second inning with no outs. But the lefty induced a pop up before two strikeouts to strand all three runners. Allen has flirted with danger recently, allowing seven or more hits in each of his last three starts. His 29 strikeouts in 26.2 innings have helped him keep a 3.04 ERA in his rookie season.
May 12, 2023
Coughs up three runs
Allen yielded three runs on eight hits and two walks over 4.1 innings during Friday's loss to the Angels. He struck out five and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Allen worked through three shutout frames before the Angels brought home three runs in a long fourth inning. It was the shortest outing of his young career and his first time allowing more than two runs. The 24-year-old now holds a 3.43 ERA and a 24:7 K:BB through 21 innings. Allen is lined up for a road start against the White Sox next week.
May 7, 2023
Settles for no-decision
Allen allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three over 5.2 innings Saturday versus the Twins. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
After two fairly impressive starts to begin his major-league career, Allen was a little less dominant Saturday. The damage against him came on a two-run home run by Max Kepler in the sixth inning. Over 16.2 innings, Allen still has a solid 2.70 ERA with a 1.26 WHIP and 19:5 K:BB. He'll look to keep up the good work next week versus the Angels.
May 3, 2023
Handling relief role at Triple-A
Allen has submitted a 6.87 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 21:6 K:BB across 18.1 innings through nine appearances with Triple-A Albuquerque this season.
ANALYSIS
Though he made six starts for Albuquerque in 2022 after signing a minor-league deal with the Rockies last August, Allen has worked in a full-time relief role thus far in 2023. With big-league rotation members German Marquez (elbow) and Noah Davis (elbow) recently moving to the injured list, however, the Rockies have been forced to dip into their pitching depth at the Triple-A level. With that in mind, it's possible Allen gets stretched out at Albuquerque and ends up entering the Triple-A rotation at some point, but his unremarkable results in relief thus far in addition to his lack of a 40-man roster spot will work against him in his hopes of resurfacing in the majors.
Apr 30, 2023
Sharp again in loss
Allen (1-1) took the loss Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over five innings against the Red Sox. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Allen was good again in his second MLB start. He allowed just two runs on Alex Verdugo's two-run single in the fifth inning. However, he took his first loss as the Guardians could only provide one supporting run. Allen has now struck out eight batters in each of his first two outings while issuing just three walks. The 24-year-old left-hander has a 1.50 ERA and 1.00 WHIP through his first 11 innings. Allen will likely make at least one more start for Cleveland with Triston McKenzie (shoulder) and Aaron Civale (oblique) still sidelined.
Apr 27, 2023
Picks up another start
Allen is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
ANALYSIS
Allen will get another turn through the Cleveland rotation after he dazzled in his MLB debut last Sunday against the Marlins, striking out eight while allowing only one earned run on five hits and one walk across six innings. Manager Terry Francona has said that both Allen and fellow rookie Tanner Bibee with stick around with the big club for at least a few more days, but Cleveland may have only one rotation spot available for the two young hurlers until at least one of Aaron Civale (oblique) or Triston McKenzie (shoulder) returns from the injured list. A poor showing in Boston could put Allen at risk of a demotion to Triple-A Columbus.
Apr 23, 2023
Impresses in debut
Allen (1-0) earned the win Sunday, allowing one run on five hits and a walk over six innings against Miami. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Allen faced little resistance from the Marlins on Sunday, striking out eight while allowing just one run on a Jon Berti homer, as he picked up a win in his MLB debut. Allen, a second-round pick in 2020, averaged 92 MPH on his fastball while featuring an impressive splitter. He'll likely make at least one more start with Cleveland while Triston McKenzie (shoulder) and Aaron Civale (oblique) are out. However, Allen certainly made a case for a more permanent role with his performance on Sunday.
Apr 23, 2023
Brought up for start vs. Marlins
The Guardians purchased the contract of Allen from Triple-A Columbus on Sunday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen will make his MLB debut against the Marlins on Sunday as the starter for the Guardians. The left-handed hurler pitched well in three appearances for Columbus with a 1.26 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over 14.1 frames in the International League. The Cleveland rotation is currently dealing with a rash of injuries, so a strong showing in Miami would bode well for him sticking around the rotation in the short- -- and possibly long- -- term.
Apr 21, 2023
Slated for MLB debut Sunday
Allen will be called up to make his major-league debut for the Guardians on Sunday versus the Marlins, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
That's assuming the game doesn't get rained out, as the forecast in Cleveland for Sunday doesn't look promising. Allen, 24, is off to a great start at Triple-A Columbus, posting a 1.26 ERA and 20:5 K:BB over 14 1/3 innings covering three starts. With Triston McKenzie (shoulder) and Aaron Civale (oblique) out and Cal Quantrill (leg) also banged up, Allen could have a chance to stick around a while if he pitches well.
Mar 20, 2023
Sent to minor-league camp
Allen was reassigned to minor-league camp by the Rockies on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Allen really struggled over five Cactus League appearances with a 12.71 ERA and 2.65 WHIP in 5.2 innings of work. The left-hander will provide depth while all but assuredly opening the 2023 season with Triple-A Albuquerque.
Mar 12, 2023
Sent to minor-league camp
Allen was reassigned to the Guardians' minor-league camp Sunday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen was with the big-league club to open spring training but unsurprisingly won't make the Opening Day roster. He earned a mid-season promotion to Triple-A Columbus last year but struggled at the highest level of the minors with a 6.49 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 73:29 K:BB over 59.1 innings.
Aug 29, 2022
Reaches deal with Rox
Allen signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Allen reported to Triple-A Albuquerque and made his debut for the affiliate Sunday, when he struck out two and allowed three earned runs on four hits and one walk over three innings. The Rockies mark the third organization of the season for Allen, who began the campaign as a member of the Guardians before he was waived and claimed by the Orioles, who released him earlier this month. For the season, Allen owns an 8.56 ERA in 27.1 innings at the Triple-A level.
Aug 23, 2022
Cut loose by O's
The Orioles released Allen on Monday.
ANALYSIS
After being cast off the 40-man roster in May, Allen stuck in the Baltimore organization and had since been working in a relief role at Triple-A Norfolk. The 25-year-old didn't find much success in that capacity and will now look for work elsewhere after compiling an 8.51 ERA and 2.03 WHIP across 24.1 innings at Triple-A.
May 20, 2022
Clears waivers
Allen cleared waivers Friday and was assigned to Triple-A Norfolk, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Orioles claimed Allen off waivers from the Guardians in early May, but he spent less than two weeks on the roster before being designated for assignment yet again. No one else wanted him this time around, so he'll remain as organizational depth for Baltimore.
May 17, 2022
Scrubbed from 40-man roster
The Orioles designated Allen for assignment Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
After being claimed off waivers from the Guardians on May 5, Allen's stint in Baltimore lasted just under two weeks before he was moved off the 40-man roster for another lefty reliever in Nick Vespi, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move. During his time with the Orioles, the 24-year-old made three appearances out of the bullpen and gave up two earned runs on three hits and two walks over 1.2 innings. If he goes unclaimed off waivers this time around, Allen will stick in the Baltimore organization and report to Norfolk.
May 9, 2022
Working out of bullpen initially
Manager Brandon Hyde said Sunday that Allen will work out of the bullpen to begin his time with the Orioles, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. "I think we're always open for options, but he'll start out in the bullpen, and I'll try to get him a lower-leverage situation early just because he hasn't pitched in a while," Hyde said of Allen. "Looking forward to seeing what he can do. We really like his arm."
ANALYSIS
After Baltimore claimed Allen off waivers from Cleveland last week, the southpaw was viewed as a candidate to step into the Orioles' depleted rotation, but he'll instead be eased into his new organization in a low-leverage relief role. Allen has yet to debut for his new team and could be called on as a multi-inning option in Thursday's game against the Cardinals, which Baltimore plans to treat as a bullpen day.
May 5, 2022
Claimed by Baltimore
Allen was claimed off waivers by the Orioles on Thursday, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen was designated for assignment by Cleveland over the weekend and will now make his way to Baltimore. The 24-year-old made four appearances out of the bullpen for the Guardians and allowed three earned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and three walks over six innings.
May 1, 2022
Designated for assignment
Allen was designated for assignment by the Guardians on Sunday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen made four relief appearances for Cleveland early in the year, and he posted a 4.50 ERA and 2.00 WHIP in six innings. The Guardians need to cut their active roster down to 26 players by Monday, so the southpaw will lose his spot on the 40-man roster. He'll likely report to Triple-A Columbus if he goes unclaimed on waivers.
Apr 12, 2022
Nabs win over Royals
Allen (1-0) allowed a hit and struck out one in two scoreless innings to earn the win in Monday's 10-7 win over the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Allen covered the fifth and sixth innings, and the Guardians took the lead in the seventh before he was replaced by Bryan Shaw on the mound. This was Allen's season debut, and it went smoothly. A starter at many of his minor-league stops, the right-hander has had to settle for a relief role to begin this season with the Guardians' rotation fairly stable. If he continues to pitch well, he should top the list of potential spot starters should injuries arise among members of the rotation.
Apr 1, 2022
Set for relief role
Allen has allowed four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out nine over five innings in three Cactus League games this spring.
ANALYSIS
Allen started two of those games, but he pitched just a single inning Thursday versus the Mariners. That indicates he's most likely to be utilized as a multi-inning reliever to begin 2022. Cal Quantrill and Triston McKenzie are likely set as the back end of the Guardians' rotation, though Allen is likely near the top of the list for potential spot starters if needed. The right-hander went 2-7 with a 6.26 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 37:17 K:BB in 14 outings across 50.1 innings last season.
Oct 1, 2021
Earns win in relief
Allen (2-7) earned the win in relief Thursday against the Royals after tossing three scoreless innings, giving up four hits while striking out two.
ANALYSIS
Allen hasn't had very good results this season, but he looked very good in this one and now has tossed three straight scoreless outings. Serving as the sixth pitcher in the team's six-man rotation, Allen has moved between the rotation and the bullpen this past month. He posted a 4.57 ERA through six appearances (21.2 innings) in September.
Sep 22, 2021
Cleveland-Kansas City postponed
Allen and Cleveland won't face the Royals on Wednesday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Northeast Ohio.
ANALYSIS
The two teams will make up the contest on their mutual off day next Monday. The postponement makes Allen's next start unclear. He had been serving as the No. 6 pitcher in the team's six-man rotation, but the southpaw could shift to the bullpen or head to the minors with Shane Bieber (shoulder) seemingly on track to return from the 60-day injured list this weekend.
Sep 15, 2021
Poor showing in nightcap
Allen (1-7) took the loss in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Twins, giving up four runs on seven hits and a walk over 3.2 innings as Cleveland was downed 6-3. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw tossed three scoreless innings before unravelling in the fourth, giving up three straight two-out hits to squander a three-run lead. Since delivering back-to-back quality starts in his return to the rotation at the end of August, Allen has regressed once again, surrendering nine runs in nine innings over his last two outings. If Cleveland continues to deploy a six-man rotation, the 24-year-old will likely continue to round it out, but Allen's 7.11 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 30:16 K:BB through 44.1 big-league innings this year make him difficult for fantasy GMs to trust in any matchup.
Sep 14, 2021
Draws another start
Allen is listed as Cleveland's starting pitcher Tuesday for the second game of a doubleheader with the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Though Allen could eventually lose hold of a starting role after Cleveland returned Aaron Civale from the injured list last week, the 24-year-old lefty will get at least one more turn in the rotation thanks to the team's upcoming schedule. Tuesday's doubleheader is the first of three twin bills in the next week and a half for Cleveland, which could prompt the club to expand the rotation to six men for the time being. Over his 10 big-league starts this season, Allen has gone 1-6 with a 6.86 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and a 27:15 K:BB across 40.2 innings.
Sep 6, 2021
Struggles versus Twins
Allen (1-6) allowed five runs on eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings, taking the loss versus Minnesota on Monday.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw yielded solo home runs to Jorge Polanco and Byron Buxton in the contest, making Monday the third time in 10 appearances he's yielded multiple homers. Allen wasn't all that effective when he kept the ball down either, leading to the worst of his three appearances since he rejoined the big-league roster. He's at a 6.86 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 27:15 K:BB through 40.2 innings this year. Allen and Eli Morgan are the likeliest candidates to lose their starting roles after Aaron Civale (finger) returns from the injured list Tuesday, unless Cleveland switches to a six-man rotation.
Sep 5, 2021
Starting again Monday
Allen is scheduled to start Monday's game against the Twins in Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Allen's solid work over his past two starts (2.13 ERA, 0.71 WHIP in 12.2 innings) looks like it'll be enough for him to stick in the rotation for at least one turn, even with Aaron Civale (finger) expected to return from the 60-day injured list to make a start later in the four-game series with Minnesota. Unless Cleveland expands its rotation to six men once Civale is officially reinstated from the IL, however, Allen could be bound for the bullpen after Monday's outing.

Effective in no-decision
Allen allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out three across 6.2 innings in a no-decision against Kansas City on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The left-handed hurler needed only 76 pitches (47 of which were strikes) to get through 6.2 frames, and he finished with his second straight quality start after failing to record such an effort in his first seven outings of the campaign. Allen didn't fool many hitters, inducing only six swinging strikes and tallying a mere three punchouts, but a fourth-inning solo homer by Adalberto Mondesi was the only extra-base hit he allowed. Over his past two starts, Allen has allowed just three earned runs and six hits across 12.2 frames. It remains to be seen if he'll remain in the rotation, however, as Triston McKenzie was activated from the injured list Wednesday and is slated to start against the Royals on Thursday.
Aug 27, 2021
Impressive in start
Allen (1-5) did not factor into the decision Friday after pitching six innings allowing one run on one hit with one walk and five strikeouts in a 4-3 loss to Boston.
ANALYSIS
After bring recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday, Allen posted by-far his best outing of the season surrounding only one hit across six innings. The left-hander would exit with the lead in the sixth with Boston later taking the lead in the eighth. Should Allen receive another start at the major league level, it is projected to come next week either in Kansas City or Boston.
Aug 26, 2021
Draws Friday start
Allen will start Friday against the Red Sox, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen was recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday. That was presumably to make a start Friday in the place of Triston McKenzie (shoulder) and that has now been confirmed. Allen regularly threw between four and five innings in his minor-league starts, so there's a possibility that he works deep enough into Friday's game to qualify for a win.
Aug 25, 2021
Recalled by Cleveland
Allen was recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen was sent to the minors early last week, and he allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five in 4.1 innings during his lone appearance in his minor-league stint. He's recorded a 9.13 ERA in 22.2 innings across seven starts in the majors this year, but he's an option to start during the team's upcoming series against the Red Sox after Triston McKenzie (shoulder) was placed on the injured list Wednesday.
Aug 16, 2021
Sent back down
Allen was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Monday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen was recalled by Cleveland on Friday, but he didn't make any appearances during the team's weekend series against the Tigers. His demotion will make room for outfielder Daniel Johnson, who was recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Monday.
Aug 13, 2021
Recalled by Cleveland
Allen was recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Friday.
ANALYSIS
All seven of Allen's big-league appearances this season have come as a starter, but it looks as though he'll pitch out of the bullpen for now, as it was reliever Francisco Perez who was optioned in a corresponding move. Allen has fared very poorly in 61 major-league innings thus far in his career, striking out just 13.7 percent of opposing batters en route to a 6.79 ERA. In 22.2 innings this season, his ERA sits all the way up at 9.13.
Jul 7, 2021
Sent down Wednesday
Allen was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Allen started Monday's game against Tampa Bay and allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks in 3.1 innings. He didn't strike out any batters and didn't factor into the decision. The southpaw has now allowed at least four earned runs in four of his last five starts, and he posted a lackluster 9.13 ERA and 1.81 WHIP in 22.2 innings across seven starts during the first half of the season. He'll attempt to right the ship in the minors, while right-hander DJ Johnson's contract was selected as part of a corresponding move.
Jul 5, 2021
Hammered for five runs
Allen yielded five runs on seven hits and two walks over 3.1 innings in Monday's loss to the Rays. He failed to record a strikeout and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Most of the damage against Allen came on Brandon Lowe's grand slam in the second inning. He's allowed eight home runs in his last four outings dating back to April and his ERA is now up to 9.13 through 22.2 innings this season. The 24-year-old had taken a loss in his previous four outings but he maintained his 1-5 record Monday. It's unclear if Allen will get another turn in the rotation before the All-Star break.
Jul 5, 2021
Draws another start
Allen is scheduled to start Monday's game in Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
Allen is getting a second turn through the rotation after he was called up from Triple-A Columbus last week to start the second half of a doubleheader with the Tigers. In his first outing with the big club since April 28, Allen worked 3.2 innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks. Allen could end up holding down a spot in the Cleveland rotation until the team gets one of Shane Bieber (shoulder), Zach Plesac (thumb) or Aaron Civale (finger) back from the injured list.
Jul 1, 2021
Gets little help in loss
Allen (1-5) allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts across 3.2 innings, taking the loss in Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader versus Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Cleveland gave Allen almost no support, as they mustered just three hits for the game. The southpaw continues to struggle in 2021, with an 8.38 ERA at the major-league level and an 11.72 ERA with Triple-A Columbus. Once Cleveland's rotation is healthier, Allen will likely head back to the minors. He tentatively lines up for a tough start in Tampa next week.
Jun 29, 2021
Starting Wednesday's nightcap
Allen will start Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Tigers, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander was promoted Monday with the expectation he'd start Thursday against the Astros, but he'll be pushed up a day after Tuesday's game was postponed. J.C. Mejia, Tuesday's scheduled starter, was fully warmed up before the game was called, prompting him to be pushed to Thursday while Allen receives a more attractive matchup in the twin bill.
Jun 28, 2021
Recalled by Cleveland
Allen was called up by Cleveland on Monday and will likely start Thursday against Houston, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen won a job in the Opening Day rotation following a strong spring, but he was demoted after struggling to a 9.19 ERA in five April starts. Things have only gotten worse in the minors, as he owns an 11.72 ERA in five starts for Triple-A Columbus, striking out just 14.6 percent of opposing batters while walking 13.5 percent. He's expected to get another chance in the starting rotation nonetheless, though he's being called up three days prior to his scheduled start just in case he's needed as a bullpen arm. Kyle Nelson was optioned in a corresponding move.
Jun 26, 2021
No longer needed Sunday
Allen will no longer be needed Sunday against the Twins, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Alen had been set to make a spot start, but Cleveland's plans changed after Saturday's game was rained out. Sam Hentges, who had been scheduled to start Saturday, will start Sunday instead.
Jun 26, 2021
Slated to start Sunday
Allen (undisclosed) will start Sunday's game against the Twins, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen was removed from Thursday's start with Triple-A Columbus, but he's apparently healthy and will rejoin the major-league roster Sunday. The southpaw made five starts for Triple-A Columbus after he was sent down, and he posted an 11.72 ERA and 2.21 WHIP in 17.2 innings.
Jun 24, 2021
Removed from Thursday's start
Allen was scratched from Thursday's start with Triple-A Columbus for an unspecified reason.
ANALYSIS
Allen was sent down at the end of April and has made five minor-league starts since then. It's not clear whether the left-hander is dealing with an injury or when he could return to the mound.
Apr 28, 2021
Demoted after ugly outing
Allen will be optioned to Triple-A Columbus after he lasted 1.1 innings and gave up six runs on five hits and a walk in his start Wednesday in Cleveland's 10-2 loss to Minnesota, Joe Noga of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Heading into Wednesday's outing, Allen's rotation spot was already hanging by a thread after he posted a 6.91 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over his first four starts. He quickly squandered that remaining goodwill against the Twins, serving up home runs to three of the first four batters he faced. After getting out of the first inning down 4-0, Allen retired only one of the three batters he faced in the top of the second before he was mercifully yanked from the contest. With the minor-league season set to begin next week, Cleveland will send Allen to Columbus to work on the command issues that have plagued him so far in 2021. Long reliever Cal Quantrill looks like the top candidate to replace Allen as Cleveland's No. 5 starter.
Apr 23, 2021
Struggles again Friday
Allen (1-3) took the loss Friday, allowing four runs on five hits and a walk in 2.1 innings versus the Yankees. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Cleveland gave Allen a 3-0 cushion after the first inning, but he gave it back in the second on home runs by Aaron Hicks and Rougned Odor. Giancarlo Stanton then hit a go-ahead homer in the third inning before Phil Maton relieved Allen. Through four starts, Allen has a 6.28 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 11:6 K:BB across 14.1 innings. He'll try to keep the ball in the yard better Wednesday versus the Twins.
Apr 17, 2021
Early exit against Reds
Allen (1-2) took the loss Friday as Cleveland fell 10-3 to the Reds, coughing up five runs (four earned) on three hits over two-plus innings. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
After tossing two perfect innings to begin the game, the wheels came off for Allen in the third following a Jose Ramirez error as he hit a batter and unleashed a wild pitch, with all five of the runners that reached against him eventually coming around to score. The rookie southpaw now carries a 5.25 ERA through three starts, but his 1.25 WHIP is a little more palatable. Allen faces a tough test in his next outing, set for Thursday at home against the Yankees.
Apr 11, 2021
Gives up one run Sunday
Allen (1-1) allowed one run on two hits and three walks while fanning five across five innings in Sunday's win over the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
Allen gave up two runs across five innings in the season opener, but he limited the damage to just one run in this one and that was enough for him to clinch his first win of the campaign. He owns a 5:10 BB:K through his first 10 innings of the season.
Apr 5, 2021
Saddled with loss
Allen (0-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five across five innings Monday against the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Allen turned in a decent first outing of the 2021 campaign, with his lone blemish occurring in the second inning on a two-run blast. Unfortunately for the southpaw, the Cleveland offense failed to put any runs up on the scoreboard. Allen will search for his first victory in his next scheduled start, which lines up for Monday against the White Sox.
Mar 28, 2021
Tabbed for Game No. 4
Allen will pitch April 5 against the Royals, though it's undecided if he'll start or follow an opener, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old has secured a spot on Cleveland's rotation to open the season, but the team is still deliberating on whether to utilize him as a bulk pitcher or traditional starter. Regardless, Allen should see significant innings to begin the season after allowing one run with an 18:3 K:BB over 14 innings during spring training.
Mar 27, 2021
Likely to begin year in rotation
Allen will likely begin the regular season in Cleveland's starting rotation, Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Terry Francona has yet to officially announce his starting rotation, but Allen's usage in recent spring games suggests that he could be in line for the fifth rotation spot. Allen tossed five scoreless innings while striking out seven in Friday's spring win over the Rockies, while right-hander Cal Quantrill only threw one inning in relief. Allen has made four spring appearances (two starts) and has posted a 0.64 ERA and 18:3 K:BB in 14 innings.
Mar 21, 2021
Pitches in
Allen gave up two runs on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts over 4.2 innings in a "B" game Saturday against the Mariners, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Meanwhile Cal Quantrill struggled by giving up six runs in his spring start against the White Sox. However, Quantrill was given the major league start, so he could still be seen ahead in the competition for a rotation spot. Allen has outperformed Quantrill in the battle for the fifth starter role by allowing one run in nine innings with 11 strikeouts and one walk in major league games. Still, the Indians may not decide the final rotation spot until the final week of spring training.
Mar 13, 2021
Showing off improved slider
Allen has given up one run on two hits and zero walks while striking out eight over five innings (two appearances) this spring.
ANALYSIS
Allen is battling for one of Cleveland's final two rotation spots, and so far he has been hard to overlook. Per Joe Noga of Cleveland.com, Allen came to camp in much better shape than in previous years, supposedly shedding 35 pounds over the offseason. His slider has been the key to his success this spring, as it has been more crisp than in prior years thanks to a new grip, and has been a major problem thus far for right-handed hitters. Cleveland has not tipped its hand, but the expectation is that Triston McKenzie will be the No. 4 starter while Allen and Cal Quantrill compete for the final spot. Allen has had better results than Quantrill, but Quantrill had a better track record prior to this small Cactus League sample.
Sep 27, 2020
Returns to alternate camp
Allen was optioned to the alternate training site Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Allen joined the big-league club Friday and delivered three scoreless during Saturday's contest, but he'll return to the alternate site in favor of a fresh arm. Adam Cimber was recalled in a corresponding move.
Sep 25, 2020
Rejoins major-league club
Allen was recalled from the alternate training site Friday.
ANALYSIS
Allen was on Cleveland's taxi squad and will join the active roster in advance of the final series of the regular season. Allen appeared in two games during his stint with the team in August, allowing four runs on nine hits with a 3:6 K:BB over 7.2 innings.
Aug 24, 2020
Optioned to alternate camp
Allen was optioned to the Indians' alternate training site Monday.
ANALYSIS
Allen made two relief appearances since joining the major-league roster Aug. 11, and he allowed four runs on nine hits and six walks while striking out three over 7.2 innings. The southpaw will attempt to sort things out at the alternate training site. Catcher Sandy Leon (personal) was activated in a corresponding move.
Jul 17, 2020
Sent to alternate camp
Allen was reassigned to the Indians' alternate training site Friday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen was able to compete for a major-league roster spot in spring training and summer camp, but he'll find himself on the outside looking in ahead of the regular season. However, the 23-year-old could be one of Cleveland's top options to fill in if their pitching staff suffers injuries. Allen posted a 6.18 ERA and 1.77 WHIP over nine appearances (four starts) with the Padres and Indians last season.
Mar 19, 2020
Sent to Triple-A
Allen was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Allen was in camp competing for a spot at the back of Cleveland's rotation, but his slim chance got even slimmer once the delayed season gave Mike Clevinger time to recover from his knee injury by the time play resumes. With a career 4.76 ERA in 107.2 Triple-A innings to go with his 6.18 ERA in 27.2 big-league innings, he has more to prove at the highest levels before being trusted as a fantasy option.
