Activated from IL, headed to free
Boyd (elbow) was activated from the 60-day injured list Thursday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
This a formality as Boyd heads to free agency, as he underwent Tommy John surgery in late June of 2023. He won't be able to pitch until late in the 2024 campaign, if at all. As a result, he'll likely land a multi-year contract, giving him the chance to recover before contributing to his new club.

Undergoes Tommy John surgery
Boyd underwent Tommy John surgery Wednesday on his left elbow, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
It was just announced Tuesday that Boyd would require the reconstructive elbow procedure and he has already gone under the knife. The 32-year-old impending free agent will likely be sidelined until late 2024.
Jun 27, 2023
On 60-day IL, needs TJ surgery
The Tigers placed Boyd on the 60-day injured list Tuesday, and he will require Tommy John surgery on his left elbow, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd was pulled from his start Monday against Texas with left elbow discomfort, and now he'll be forced to miss the rest of the season and most of 2024. He finishes the season with a 5.45 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with a 73:25 K:BB through 71 innings. Anthony Misiewicz was promoted in a corresponding move.
Jun 26, 2023
Exits with left elbow discomfort
Boyd was removed from Monday's game against the Rangers due to left elbow discomfort, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd is likely headed for further evaluation to determine whether he'll miss any time. He'll be considered day-to-day until more information surfaces.
Jun 26, 2023
Pulled due to injury
Boyd was removed from Monday's start against the Rangers due to an undisclosed injury, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd gave up one run on one hit and struck out two over 0.2 innings prior to leaving with the team trainer. The extent of the injury is unclear at this time.
Jun 21, 2023
Fans seven in win
Boyd (5-5) earned the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits over six innings against the Royals. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
Boyd turned in his second quality start of the season Wednesday, tossing six innings of two-run ball against Kansas City. After tallying more than six strikeouts once in his first 10 appearances, Boyd has crossed that threshold in three of his last four. Over that stretch, he sports a 4.92 ERA with a blistering 27:3 K:BB across 22 innings. However, he's lined up to make his next start against the Rangers, who have averaged 6.1 runs per game in 2023, the most in MLB.
Jun 21, 2023
Looks sharp in win Wednesday
Boyd (5-5) allowed two runs on six hits across six innings to earn the win Wednesday against the Royals. He had no walks and struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
Boyd had one of his better starts of the season to earn his second consecutive win. In the two wins, the lefty has gone six innings both times, allowing six earned runs and striking out 15. Boyd still has a mediocre 5.37 ERA overall and is a bit too inconsistent to trust in fantasy leagues, at least for the moment. He'll look for his third straight win in his next outing, which is tentatively set for Monday against the Rangers on the road.
Jun 15, 2023
Earns win Thursday
Boyd (4-5) allowed four runs on seven hits across six innings to earn the win Thursday against the Twins. He walked one and struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
After allowing five runs and taking the loss in his last start, it looked like Boyd was headed for another rough outing when he allowed four runs in the second inning. However, the lefty settled in from there and managed to earn his first win since May 19. Boyd will still take a middling 5.60 ERA into his next start, which is tentatively set for Wednesday against the Royals, giving him a good chance to earn a win in consecutive appearances for the first time this season.
Jun 10, 2023
Knocked around in loss
Boyd (3-5) took the loss Saturday, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks over 5 innings against the Diamondbacks. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Boyd didn't have his best stuff Saturday, surrendering a two-run homer to Nick Ahmed in the second inning and later serving up a three-run shot to Lourdes Gurriel in the fifth. The left-hander recorded only three strikeouts after fanning at least five in each of his previous three starts and he's now lost three of his last four decisions. It was also Boyd's fourth time this season allowing at least five runs.
Jun 4, 2023
Fans nine in no-decision
Boyd allowed a run on three hits and struck out nine without walking a batter over five innings in a no-decision versus the White Sox on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Boyd pitched well, but the Tigers' bullpen couldn't maintain the lead. The three baserunners were a season low, while his nine strikeouts were a season high to make this his sharpest start of the year. It's just the second time he's limited an opponent to one run or less. Boyd has struggled to a 5.57 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 53:22 K:BB through 53.1 innings over 11 starts this year, his first as a starter since 2021. He's projected for a home start versus Arizona in his next outing.
May 29, 2023
Suffers fourth loss Monday
Boyd (3-4) took the loss Monday, allowing five runs on five hits and four walks over six innings in a 5-0 loss against Texas. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Boyd tied his season high with four walks but was still able to complete six innings for the second time this year. The veteran is transitioning back to a starting role after operating exclusively as a reliever for Seattle last year, and he's struggled to find a rhythm. Despite the less-than-ideal numbers (5.96 ERA and 1.43 WHIP), Boyd remains firmly entrenched in Detroit's rotation and is scheduled to pitch again during the finale of a three-game weekend set versus the White Sox.
May 25, 2023
Pulled in fifth inning
Boyd allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out six batters over 4.2 innings in a no-decision against Kansas City on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Boyd pitched quite well in the outing, but he began to fade in the fourth, allowing a run on a hit, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. When the left-hander let two more hitters reach base in the fifth, he was pulled after 86 pitches in favor of Will Vest, who retired Bobby Witt to keep Boyd from incurring additional damage. Boyd looked good when he was in the game, racking up 15 swings-and-misses and fanning six batters. This was the first time all season he's finished a start having allowed fewer than two earned runs.
May 20, 2023
Collects third win
Boyd (3-3) picked up the win Friday, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk over 5.2 innings in an 8-6 victory over the Nationals. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw blanked Washington for five frames before running out of steam in the sixth and falling just short of his second quality start of the season. Despite this solid effort, a couple of rough recent outings have left Boyd with a 6.21 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 33:16 K:BB through 37.2 innings on the season. He'll look to whittle down those ratios in his next start, which is likely to come next week in Kansas City.
May 13, 2023
Struggles versus Seattle
Boyd (2-3) took the loss Friday, allowing six runs on five hits and four walks over 1.1 innings during a 9-2 loss to the Mariners. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Boyd couldn't find any rhythm Friday and was pulled after just 55 pitches with Seattle already up 6-0 in the second inning. The poor outing elevated the left-hander's ERA to 6.47 through seven starts (32 innings) and snapped his four-game streak of completing at least five innings. Boyd will look to get back on track next time out, which is tentatively scheduled for a three-game weekend set in Washington.
May 6, 2023
Strikes out six in win
Boyd (2-2) allowed three runs on five hits and struck out six without issuing a walk in six innings, earning the win Friday over the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
This was Boyd's longest start of the season, though he was moderately efficient with 87 pitches (60 strikes). He's allowed more than three runs just once in six outings, and this is the first time in 2023 he hasn't walked a batter. The southpaw now has a 5.28 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 28:11 K:BB across 30.2 innings this season. He's projected for a home start versus the Mariners next week.
Apr 30, 2023
Stumbles in nightcap Saturday
Boyd (1-2) took the loss in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Orioles, surrendering six runs on eight hits and a walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Detroit jumped on the veteran southpaw for four runs in the second inning before a two-run homer by light-hitting Ryan McKenna in the sixth chased Boyd from the game. It's the first time in five starts this season he's given up more than three runs, but Boyd is beginning to have trouble keeping the ball in the yard, as he's served up four home runs in his last 15.2 innings. He'll take a 5.47 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 22:11 K:BB through 24.2 frames into his next outing, which could come next weekend in St. Louis.
Apr 24, 2023
Fans eight in victory
Boyd (1-1) yielded two runs on five hits and a walk over five frames Monday, striking out eight and earning a win over the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Boyd's stuff was locked in Monday. His eight strikeouts and 19 whiffs were both new season highs after he totaled just 11 punchouts through his first three starts. He allowed solo home runs to William Contreras and Mike Brosseau but was able to avoid danger otherwise. Boyd lowered his season ERA to 4.26 and picked up his first win of 2023. He's currently projected for a home matchup with the Orioles this weekend.
Apr 18, 2023
Settles for no-decision Tuesday
Boyd didn't factor into the decision in a 4-3 win over the Guardians in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader. He gave up three runs on five hits and two walks over five innings, striking out four.
ANALYSIS
All three runs came in the fourth inning, punctuated by a two-run homer from Oscar Gonzalez, but otherwise Detroit's pitchers kept Cleveland off the board all day, going on to win the nightcap 1-0. It's Boyd's longest outing of the year in three trips to the mound, and the veteran southpaw will take a 4.50 ERA and 11:9 K:BB through 14 innings into his next start, likely to come this weekend in Baltimore.
Apr 17, 2023
Guardians-Tigers postponed
Monday's game between the Guardians and Tigers has been postponed due to inclement weather, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Tuesday. It's the second straight day Matthew Boyd has had a start postponed. He'll get another extra day of rest and will be opposed by Hunter Gaddis on Tuesday.
Apr 16, 2023
Sunday's game called off
Boyd and the Tigers won't play Sunday against the Giants after the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Following a lengthy rain delay, Sunday's matchup was officially called off five hours after the scheduled first pitch. Boyd played catch after the game was officially postponed, but the Tigers haven't yet revealed their updated pitching plans for the upcoming series against the Guardians.
Apr 9, 2023
Charged with loss Sunday
Boyd (0-1) took the loss Sunday, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks over 4.2 innings in a 4-1 loss to Boston. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Boyd also gave up two runs during his season debut against the Astros on Monday, but he was able to settle for the no-decision in that outing. However, the Tigers mustered just one run during Sunday's series finale, so Boyd was charged with his first loss of the season after giving up runs in the second and fifth innings. The southpaw tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Giants on Saturday.
Apr 4, 2023
Allows two runs
Boyd yielded two runs on two hits and three walks over 4.1 innings during Monday's win over Houston. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Boyd kept the Astros' offense tame until they finally broke through in the fifth. He gave up one run on a Jeremy Pena groundout and was charged with another when Yordan Alvarez took Jose Cisnero deep. Boyd forced just six whiffs on 35 swings. He's expected to face the Red Sox at home this weekend.
Mar 29, 2023
Lined up as No. 4 starter
Boyd will start the Tigers' fourth regular-season game next Monday at Houston, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd was scratched from his final scheduled Grapefruit League outing this past Sunday against the Blue Jays, but it thankfully was not an injury-related decision. He'll follow Eduardo Rodriguez, Spencer Turnbull and Joe Wentz in Detroit's season-opening starting rotation. Matt Manning has the No. 5 spot.
Mar 25, 2023
Scratched from start
Boyd will not start Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays as scheduled, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Tigers have yet to announce a reason for the move, but it's certainly possible it's injury-related. The lefty hasn't pitched like he's hurt this spring, posting an excellent 21:3 K:BB in 13 innings, but he missed most of last season due to elbow issues.
Mar 12, 2023
Effective again Sunday
Boyd tossed four scoreless innings in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins. He allowed a hit and a walk, while striking out six.
ANALYSIS
Boyd has now logged nine innings this spring, and he's recorded a strong 2.00 ERA and 0.67 WHIP, to go along with 17 strikeouts. The lefty has shown an ability to miss bats in the past, and while he only made 15 starts the last two years due to injuries, he could be primed for a nice season if he's fully healthy again. The Tigers will likely carefully manage Boyd's workload, however, which would cap his fantasy upside.
Mar 8, 2023
Looks sharp Tuesday
Boyd allowed one run on one hits across three innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals. He had no walks and struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
Outside of allowing a second inning home run to Nolan Gorman, Boyd was flawless, and the seven strikeouts are a positive sign. The lefty has a career 4.90 ERA, though he's been able to offset that to some degree in the past by racking up strikeouts, including a career-best 238 over 185.1 innings in 2019. Boyd figures to have some volatility and remains an injury risk, but he could be a decent fantasy option if he continues to miss bats at a good rate.
Mar 2, 2023
Strikes out four in spring debut
Boyd allowed one run on two hits and a walk across two innings of work in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Orioles. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Boyd was making his spring debut and it was his first action with the Tigers since 2021, when he made 15 starts and recorded a 3.89 ERA. The lefty missed part of that season and most of 2022 due to a flexor tendon surgery, so Detroit will likely be cautious with him this season. Boyd has some strikeout upside, though he's certainly not without risk for fantasy managers due to his injury history.
Dec 1, 2022
Rejoins Detroit
Boyd agreed to a one-year, $10 million contract with the Tigers on Thursday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander spent most of 2022 recovering from the flexor tendon surgery he underwent in September of the previous year, but he returned as a reliever for the final month of the campaign in Seattle and had a 1.35 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 13:8 K:BB over 13.1 innings. Boyd will now return to Detroit, where he spent the prior six-plus seasons. He was pitching well in 2021 prior to the injury with a 3.89 ERA across 15 starts, and a return to that form would be a boon for the Tigers.
Oct 4, 2022
Stellar in long relief
Boyd fired three scoreless relief innings during which he allowed one walk and recorded five strikeouts in a loss to the Tigers on Monday.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander bedeviled his former club with a sharp performance in which he recorded first-pitch strikes on all 10 batters he faced and rang up 11 swings and misses overall. Boyd's body of work since making his Sept. 1 debut has to give manager Scott Servais some peace of mind heading into the postseason, as the one-time starter, who can cover multiple innings when necessary, now boasts a 2-0 record, 1.35 ERA and 0.98 WHIP across 10 appearances.
Sep 23, 2022
Ultra-efficient for second win
Boyd (2-0) secured the win over the Athletics on Thursday, firing two scoreless innings during which he allowed a hit and recorded a strikeout.
ANALYSIS
The veteran southpaw pounded 20 of his 25 pitches in for strikes while giving the Mariners a pair of valuable frames following an atypically short start from George Kirby. Boyd has been an invaluable asset to manager Scott Servais as a multi-inning left-handed bullpen option, scattering four hits across 8.1 scoreless innings during his first six appearances since being activated from the injured list Sept. 1.
Sep 5, 2022
First win with eventful inning
Boyd (1-0) picked up the victory in an extra-innings win over the Guardians on Sunday, firing a scoreless 10th inning during which he issued three walks (two intentional).
ANALYSIS
It was quite the eventful frame for Boyd, who intentionally put Jose Ramirez on to start the inning and then got Josh Naylor to hit into a double play that move phantom runner Ahmed Rosario over to third base. After another intentional free pass to Oscar Gonzalez, Boyd then loaded the bases by legitimately walking Andres Gimenez before finally retiring Mike Freeman on a flyout with the bases juiced. The appearance was the southpaw's second since being activated from the injured list Thursday, with the first also a scoreless one-inning effort that unfolded that same day.
Sep 1, 2022
Comes off IL
The Mariners reinstated Boyd (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Thursday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd will be one of two players that will be joining Seattle with the roster expanding from 26 to 28 men for the final month of the season, with outfielder Taylor Trammell also receiving a call-up from Triple-A Tacoma. Though Boyd has worked almost exclusively as a starter through his first seven seasons in the big leagues, he'll be deployed out of the bullpen with Seattle as he makes his return from the flexor tendon surgery he underwent last September. He was excellent across his six minor-league rehab outings, striking out 14 over eight innings while allowing two earned runs on four hits and no walks.
Aug 30, 2022
Thursday activation likely
The Mariners plan to activate Boyd (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Thursday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd has struck out seven in four scoreless innings across his last three rehab appearances, suggesting he could be a valuable addition to Seattle's bullpen down the stretch. The lefty has yet to appear in an MLB game this year after undergoing flexor tendon surgery last September.
Aug 29, 2022
Strong in last two rehab outings
Boyd (elbow) generated a pair of one-inning, two-strikeout scoreless efforts for Triple-A Tacoma on Friday and Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The pair of spotless showings are the latest indication Boyd could serve in a key bullpen role down the stretch for the Mariners. The veteran left-hander has generated scoreless efforts in five of his six rehab appearances, and he's now logged eight innings overall with the Rainiers ahead of what will likely be a Sept. 1 activation.
Aug 25, 2022
Bounces back in latest rehab
Boyd (elbow) fired two scoreless innings during which he allowed a hit and recorded three strikeouts in Triple-A Tacoma's win over Salt Lake on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The impressive effort, which earned Boyd the second hold of his rehab assignment, was a welcome rebound after he'd given up a pair of runs over two innings in his prior appearance with the Rainiers. The left-hander actually threw fewer pitches Tuesday (23) than in that outing (40), but that was due to a much more efficient performance that saw Boyd pound 17 of his offerings in for strikes. The 31-year-old now has three scoreless efforts in his first four trips to the mound with Tacoma, but he's likely to still log at least one more appearance before activation is considered.
Aug 20, 2022
Works up to two innings Friday
Boyd (elbow) took the loss for Triple-A Tacoma against Albuquerque on Friday, allowing two earned runs on two hits, a balk and a hit batsman while recording four strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
As the busy final line implies, Boyd had some control issues in his third rehab appearance. The veteran southpaw did work up to 40 pitches (26 strikes), and his swing-and-miss stuff was encouraging. Boyd had logged a pair of scoreless one-inning outings in his first two trips to the mound for the Rainiers, and the Associated Press reports manager Scott Servais estimates the 31-year-old could join the big-league bullpen within the next two weeks.
Aug 16, 2022
Begins rehab assignment
Boyd (elbow) struck out two over a perfect inning Monday in his first rehab appearance at Triple-A Tacoma.
ANALYSIS
Acquired from the Giants on Aug. 2, Boyd currently occupies a spot on the Mariners' 60-day injured list but looks on track for activation at some point within the next few weeks. Due to his prolonged recovery from the flexor tendon surgery he underwent last September, Boyd doesn't look like he'll have enough time to get stretched out for a starting role, so he's expected to slot into the Seattle bullpen once he's eventually reinstated from the IL. Though he likely won't factor into the closing situation, Boyd could prove to be a valuable multi-inning arm out of the bullpen.
Aug 8, 2022
Throwing to hitters
Boyd (elbow) faced hitters in a live batting practice session Monday, Corey Brock of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd, whom the Mariners acquired last week in a deadline deal with the Giants, has been on the shelf all season after undergoing left flexor tendon surgery last September. He was diagnosed with a strain in the surgically repaired tendon in June, but after a four-week shutdown period, he was cleared to start throwing again. Boyd appears to have navigated bullpen sessions without any setbacks, so facing hitters likely marks the final hurdle he'll need to clear before heading out on what could be an extended minor-league rehab assignment. The 31-year-old southpaw may not have enough time to build up for a starting role, but he could prove to be a useful asset out of the Seattle bullpen down the stretch.
Aug 2, 2022
Sent to Seattle
Boyd (elbow) was sent from the Giants to the Mariners on Tuesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd's move appears to be part of the previously reported trade which sent Curt Casali (oblique) from San Francisco to Seattle in exchange for Michael Stryffeler, meaning the Mariners will be getting a pair of injured players in exchange for the Double-A reliever. Boyd hasn't thrown a pitch in an organized game this year as he makes his way back from flexor tendon surgery, but he resumed throwing in late-July after a six-week setback. He theoretically provides the Mariners with some extra rotation depth, as he posted a career-best 3.89 ERA for the Tigers last season, but it's possible he'll only have time to return as a reliever.
Jul 25, 2022
Tosses side session
Boyd (elbow) threw a bullpen session Monday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd was shut down in mid-June after feeling discomfort in his elbow while rehabbing from left flexor tendon surgery, but he's finally received clearance to throw off a mound. The team figures to watch the southpaw closely over the next few days to determine whether he can progress in his rehab.
Jun 17, 2022
Shut down with flexor strain
Boyd has a flexor tendon strain and won't throw for four weeks, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
He will be shut down and then evaluated in four weeks. Boyd had surgery on his flexor tendon in September 2021, so this is a concerning diagnosis. He hasn't pitched at all this season and should be considered out indefinitely.
Jun 13, 2022
Experiences elbow discomfort
Boyd (elbow) felt some discomfort in his left elbow during Monday's live batting practice session, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Giants have yet to reveal next steps for Boyd, but the team will likely see how he feels over the course of the next few days before re-evaluating the southpaw. If he's unable to begin a rehab assignment soon, his return date could creep into late July and possibly into August.
Jun 10, 2022
Scheduled to face hitters Monday
Boyd (elbow) is scheduled to throw live batting practice Monday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd has been throwing 40-pitch bullpen sessions since April and has been able to mix in all of his pitches. The southpaw has spent the start of the season recovering from left flexor tendon surgery that he underwent last September, but he'll likely be able to begin a rehab assignment soon before rejoining the Giants in late June or early July.
May 24, 2022
Nearing live BP sessions
Boyd (elbow) is almost ready for live batting practice, Evan Webeck of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd continues to recover from his left flexor tendon surgery from last September. He's been throwing 40-pitch bullpen sessions since April. Webeck adds that Boyd is unlikely to be ready to return when first eligible June 6 -- it's more likely the southpaw returns in late June or early July, depending on if the Giants need him to function as a starter or a reliever.
Apr 29, 2022
Throwing program progressing
Boyd (elbow) played catch Thursday and threw a side session Friday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
He continues to make small progress in his throwing program, but we won't see him until June at the earliest, given that he is on the 60-day injured list.
Apr 11, 2022
Making progress
Boyd (elbow) has been throwing off a mound twice a week and is making good progress, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Giants signed Boyd to a one-year, $5.2 million deal in mid-March knowing full well that he wouldn't be recovered from September elbow surgery until June. It looks as though he's still on that pace.
Mar 27, 2022
Shifts to 60-day IL
Boyd (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list Sunday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd underwent flexor tendon surgery on his left elbow in September and isn't expected to be ready for game action until June, so it's not much of a surprise he'll open the season on the 60-day IL. The 31-year-old had a 3.89 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 67:23 K:BB over 78.2 innings for Detroit last season, and he'll be in the mix for a rotation spot with San Francisco after inking a one-year, $5.2 million deal in mid-March.
Mar 17, 2022
Signs with Giants
Boyd signed a one-year, $5.2 million deal with the Giants on Thursday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd underwent flexor tendon surgery in his left elbow in September and isn't expected to return until June. Once healthy, he'll compete for a spot in the Giants' increasingly crowded rotation. The lefty had what looked like a breakout season in 2019, as his typically sub-par strikeout rate spiked to 30.2 percent, though that came with a 4.56 ERA. He lost all his strikeout gains in 2020 as his ERA soared to 6.71 and then saw his strikeout rate slip still further to 19.9 percent in 2021, though that came with a career-best 3.89 ERA. Which version of himself he'll be once he returns to action is unclear.
Nov 30, 2021
Let go by Detroit
Boyd (elbow) was non-tendered by the Tigers on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Boyd underwent flexor tendon surgery in late September and was likely to be unavailable for the start of the 2022 campaign, so Detroit opted not to tender him a contract. The 30-year-old lelfty pitched well when healthy last season with a 3.89 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 67:23 K:BB over 78.2 innings (15 starts). He'll now need to contend with free agency in addition to his rehab program.
Sep 24, 2021
Set for flexor tendon surgery
Boyd will undergo surgery on the flexor tendon in his left elbow Monday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd had a second visit with Dr. Neal ElAttrache this week which prompted fears of Tommy John surgery, but he'll instead be undergoing a different procedure on his elbow. The 30-year-old is without an official recovery timeline but hopes to pitch at some point next season, which makes it sound as though he may not be ready for Opening Day.
Sep 19, 2021
Visiting another surgeon
Boyd (elbow) is scheduled for a second visit with Dr. Neal ElAttrache early next week, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd recently had a visit with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Keith Meister, and he's now scheduled to check in with Dr. ElAttrache, both of which are known for their experience with Tommy John surgery. A decision has yet to be made on whether the left-hander will require the procedure, but it appears to be a possibility and leaves his availability for 2022 in question.
Sep 11, 2021
To see orthopedic surgeon
Boyd (elbow strain) will see orthopedic surgeon Dr. Keith Meister for an evaluation, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Considering Meister just performed Tommy John surgery on Tigers catcher Jake Rogers, this is a concerning development. It seems highly unlikely that Boyd will pitch again this season and it's possible he won't pitch again until the 2023 season.
Sep 11, 2021
On IL with elbow strain
Boyd was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a left elbow strain.
ANALYSIS
Given the timing of the injury, this may mean the end of Boyd's season. He dealt with elbow soreness from mid-June to late-August and was scratched from Friday's start. Tyler Alexander replaced him in the rotation.
Sep 10, 2021
Elbow soreness returns
Boyd was scratched from Friday's start against the Rays because of the same recurring elbow soreness that sidelined him from mid-June to late August, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw will be further examined by Detroit's medical staff to figure out the severity of the issue, but given that the same injury put Boyd on the shelf for over two months already this season, it wouldn't be at all surprising if he doesn't return in 2021. Tyler Alexander draws the start in his place Friday.
Sep 10, 2021
Scratched from Friday's start
Boyd is no longer starting Friday's game against the Rays due to an undisclosed reason, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Tyler Alexander will start in his place.
ANALYSIS
The reason for the change isn't known at this point, but the Tigers should provide an update prior to first pitch.

Takes loss against Reds
Boyd (3-8) allowed five earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six across four innings, taking the loss to the Reds on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Boyd gave up all five of his runs in the third inning. He allowed five hits in the inning, capped off by an Aristides Aquino three-run homer. Boyd pitched four-inning losses in both of his starts since returning from the 60-day injured list with a triceps injury. The 30-year-old has a 3.89 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 67 strikeouts in 78.2 innings this season.
Aug 29, 2021
Yields two runs in return
Boyd (3-7) took the loss Sunday versus Toronto. He allowed two runs on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in four innings.
ANALYSIS
After an absence of two-and-a-half months due to triceps tendinitis, Boyd had a middling performance in his return. The two runs he allowed came on solo home runs by Bo Bichette and Kevin Smith, but Detroit offense mustered just one run of support. Boyd threw 71 pitches (44 strikes) in the contests, up from 56 pitches in his final rehab start with Triple-A Toledo. The southpaw has a 3.50 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 61:21 K:BB through 74.2 innings this season. He's projected to make his next start in Cincinnati next weekend.
Aug 29, 2021
Activated for Sunday's start
The Tigers reinstated Boyd (triceps) from the 60-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Sunday against the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Outfielder Daz Cameron was sent to Triple-A Toledo to clear a spot on the active roster for Boyd, who will be making his first start for Detroit since June 14. The southpaw ramped up to 4.1 innings (56 pitches) in his final rehab start at Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, so he'll likely face some light restrictions Sunday in his return to the Detroit rotation. Before he was shut down in June with left triceps tendinitis, Boyd went 3-6 with a 3.44 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 56:19 K:BB in 70.2 innings.
Aug 25, 2021
Expected to return Sunday
Manager A.J. Hinch said Wednesday that Boyd (triceps) is "penciled in" to start Sunday's game against the Blue Jays, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd made his final rehab start at Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday and allowed a hit and no walks while striking out six in 4.1 innings. He tossed 56 pitches in the appearance. The southpaw may have a pitch count if he ultimately returns to the mound Sunday.
Aug 22, 2021
Final rehab start coming Tuesday
Boyd (triceps) is scheduled to make what's expected to be his third and final rehab start at Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
After covering three innings and 43 pitches in his most recent outing Aug. 18, Boyd is expected to push his pitch count up to the 60-to-70 range Tuesday. If Boyd experiences no setbacks with his left triceps tendon in the outing, he could slide back into the Detroit rotation as soon as Sunday's series finale with the Blue Jays. Boyd has been on the 60-day injured list since June 14.
Aug 17, 2021
Aiming to return in late August
The Tigers are targeting their Aug. 27 through 29 home series versus the Blue Jays for Boyd's (triceps) return from the 60-day injured list, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Out since mid-June with left triceps tendinitis, Boyd reached the final phase of his recovery program when he began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Toledo on Friday. He tossed two scoreless frames for the affiliate, then rejoined the Tigers later in the weekend for another bullpen session. The Tigers plan on having Boyd make two more rehab starts before bringing him back from the IL, with the southpaw's next outing with Toledo likely to come as soon as Wednesday. If Boyd is able to build up to five innings during his rehab assignment and steer clear of any setbacks, he should make about five or six more starts for Detroit before the season ends.
Aug 12, 2021
Shifts to 60-day injured list
Boyd (triceps) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Thursday.
ANALYSIS
The move comes on Boyd's 59th day on the injured list, so it won't have any impact on his return timeline. He'll begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, but the length of his absence means he'll likely need a handful of outings before he's ready to go.
Aug 10, 2021
Rehab begins Thursday
Boyd (triceps) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd has been out for nearly two months with triceps tendinitis. Given the length of his absence, he'll presumably require multiple rehab appearances before he returns from the injured list. If he makes three rehab starts, he could return sometime in late August, though the Tigers have yet to specify exactly when they expect him back.

Resumes facing hitters
Boyd (triceps) threw live batting practice Sunday at the Tigers' spring training facility, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Assuming Boyd checks out fine following the throwing session, he could be cleared to begin a minor-league rehab assignment as soon as the upcoming weekend. Because Boyd has been on the injured list since mid-June with left triceps tendinitis, he may require a few outings in the minors before the Tigers deem him ready to rejoin the big-league rotation.

Because Boyd has been on the injured list since mid-June with left triceps tendinitis, he may require at least outings in the minors before the Tigers deem him ready to rejoin the big-league rotation.

Limited to flat-ground throwing
Boyd (triceps) has been steadily increasing his throwing distance off flat ground, but he has yet to be cleared for mound work since being placed on the 10-day injured list June 15, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
While it's a positive sign that Boyd isn't shut down, the Tigers aren't counting on him to return from the injured list before the end of July. A firmer target date for Boyd's reinstatement should come once he's sent out on a minor-league rehab assignment, but he has multiple hurdles to clear in the recovery process before he reaches that point.
Jun 18, 2021
Won't return before All-Star break
Boyd (triceps) is dealing with muscular tendinitis and won't return before the All-Star break, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday. Although several doctors seem to have ruled out structural damage, the team will give the southpaw extended time to recover to make sure he's fully healthy when he returns. Matt Manning and Wily Peralta could remain in the rotation while Boyd and Spencer Turnbull (forearm) are sidelined.
Jun 15, 2021
Heads to IL
Boyd was placed on the 10-day injured list with left arm discomfort Tuesday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw will be further evaluated in the next 24 hours, so it's still possible he'll be given a more detailed diagnosis and return timeline in the near future. For the time being, he'll miss at least next turn through the rotation with him becoming eligible to come off the IL on June 25.
Jun 15, 2021
May require IL stint
Manager A.J. Hinch suggested that Boyd could be in line for a stint on the injured list after he exited his start in Monday's 10-3 win over the Royals with a suspected triceps issue, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. "We're gonna have to figure out some things," Hinch said, in reference to who might replace Boyd in the rotation.
ANALYSIS
The Tigers officially attributed Boyd's removal from the contest to left arm discomfort, but the southpaw will undergo additional evaluation Tuesday before providing an update on his condition. Reliever Alex Lange also exited Monday's contest with a shoulder injury, so both he and Boyd could be placed on the IL as soon as Tuesday if Detroit wants to restock its pitching staff with some fresh arms. Before departing, Boyd worked around five hits to toss 2.1 scoreless innings, lowering his ERA to 3.44 for the season.
Jun 14, 2021
Exits with knee issue
Boyd left Monday's start against Kansas City due to discomfort in his knee, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd had to be removed in the bottom of the third inning after recording the first out. He made it through 2.1 scoreless frames despite surrendering five hits prior to his exit. The severity of Boyd's injury is not yet known.
Jun 9, 2021
Scoops up third win
Boyd improved to 3-6 on the season after limiting the Mariners to one unearned run over six innings in the Tigers' 5-3 victory Tuesday. He scattered six hits and a walk and struck out three in the 97-pitch start.
ANALYSIS
Aside from a bumpy second inning in which he allowed two hits and gave up a run on a Jonathan Schoop fielding error, Boyd was otherwise on cruise control during the outing. The Tigers staked him to an early 3-0 lead after one inning, and that would be all the support Boyd would need to silence the Seattle bats. He retired the final seven batters he faced before turning the game over to the relief crew, which was able to maintain the Tigers' lead.
Jun 1, 2021
Allows five runs in no-decision
Boyd allowed five runs across 4.2 innings and did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's game against the Brewers. He gave up five hits and three walks while striking out four.
ANALYSIS
The three walks were problematic but Boyd was really done in by three home runs, which has been an issue during the lefty's career. In his last full season back in 2019, Boyd allowed 39 home runs in 185.1 innings, which was the second highest total in the American League. He then gave up another 15 long balls in just 60.1 innings last year. Boyd has only been tagged six times in 62.1 innings so far in 2021, but four of those have come in his last two appearances. He'll look to keep the ball in the park in his next outing, which is scheduled for next Tuesday against the Mariners.
May 27, 2021
Crumbles late
Boyd (2-6) allowed four earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five across five innings to take the loss Thursday against Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Boyd stumbled out of the gate, as he allowed two hits and an earned run in the first inning. However, he settled in from there to toss four scoreless innings. Trouble ensued when he returned to the mound for the sixth frame, when he promptly allowed three earned runs without recording an out to spoil his start. Across his last three outings, Boyd has now surrendered 13 earned runs across 16 innings. Even so, he's maintained a 3.43 ERA with a 47:15 K:BB across 57.2 frames for the season.
May 22, 2021
Takes fifth loss Saturday
Boyd (2-5) allowed five runs across five innings to take the loss Saturday against the Royals. He gave up eight hits and three walks while striking out five.
ANALYSIS
Boyd started the season very strongly but has fallen off a little bit in his last two outings, allowing nine earned runs across 11 innings. The lefty has seen his ERA rise from 1.94 to 3.08 in the process. Boyd would certainly live with that 3.08 figure, but he's coming off a 4.56 ERA in 2019 and a 6.71 ERA in 2020, so there's reason to believe his current number will continue to inch upward. He'll look to buck the trend and pitch better when he takes the hill again Thursday against Cleveland.
May 17, 2021
Takes loss against Cubs
Boyd (2-4) was tagged with the loss Sunday against the Cubs after allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and one walk while fanning eight across six innings.
ANALYSIS
Boyd didn't have his best stuff Sunday despite tossing 69 of his 92 pitches for strikes, but this might have been nothing more than a bump on the road for the 30-year-old left-hander -- this was the first time he allowed more than three runs in any start. He still owns a 2.45 ERA across 47.2 innings, though, and he will try to bounce back in his next start scheduled for next week against the Royals on the road.
May 12, 2021
Fires six scoreless frames
Boyd settled for a no-decision during Tuesday's win despite holding the Royals scoreless across six innings. He allowed four hits and a pair of walks while striking out five.
ANALYSIS
After missing a turn in the rotation because of knee tendonitis, Boyd looked solid against Kansas City as the left-hander held his opponent scoreless for the second time this season. Boyd left the game with a seven-run lead, which unfortunately was erased by the bullpen. Despite a successful stat line for the 30-year-old (1.94 ERA, 0.94 WHIP), Boyd's usual lack of run support and bullpen reliability make him hard to count on. He's slated to make his next start Sunday against the Cubs.
May 9, 2021
Tigers-Twins postponed
Boyd and the Tigers won't face the Twins on Sunday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Detroit, Megan Ryan of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
The two teams will make up the game as part of a split doubleheader July 16. The Tigers will be off until Tuesday, when they continue their homestand with a three-game set against the Royals. Expect manager A.J. Hinch to bump each of his rotation members back due to the postponement, which would allow Boyd to start the series opener versus Kansas City.
May 9, 2021
Cleared to start Sunday
As expected, Boyd (knee) will start Sunday's series finale against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Boyd's bout with left knee tendinitis forced him to miss his previous turn through the rotation earlier in the week, but the Tigers' decision not to place him on the injured list was an indication that the club wasn't expecting him to miss any further starts. The lefty apparently came out of his pre-start bullpen session without issue, so he shouldn't face any limitations Sunday as he picks up his first start of May.
May 4, 2021
Poised to start Sunday
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said during an appearance on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM that Boyd will start Sunday against the Twins "if all things continue to progress" with his sore left knee.
ANALYSIS
The Tigers' decision not to place Boyd on the injured list after he was removed from his April 29 start due to knee tendinitis would seem to support the notion that the southpaw is trending toward a return to action this weekend. Though Boyd remains on the active roster, Detroit will still miss end up missing one turn through the rotation. Michael Fulmer will pick up a start Tuesday against the Red Sox in place of Boyd in what Hinch suggested would likely be a bullpen game.
Apr 30, 2021
Set to miss at least one start
Manager A.J. Hinch said Friday that Boyd (knee) is likely to miss his start next week but may not require a trip to the injured list, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Hinch didn't have an official update but indicate the early returns were positive after the left-hander was pulled from Thursday's start with left knee tendinitis. Even if Boyd doesn't end up on the shelf, he could still end up missing only the one start since the Tigers have a scheduled off day the next two Mondays.
Apr 29, 2021
Dealing with left knee tendinitis
Boyd was pulled from Thursday's start against the White Sox due to left knee tendinitis.
ANALYSIS
Boyd exited the game after completing only one inning and throwing 36 pitches. It's positive news that he did not suffer an arm injury, though it remains unclear if he will be forced to miss additional time.
Apr 29, 2021
Exits with apparent injury
Boyd exited Thursday's start with an apparent injury, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd left the game after completing only one inning, though he faced two batters in the second frame. There was no official injury announcement, but Boyd had thrown only 36 pitches and exited with trainers.
Apr 24, 2021
Takes tough-luck loss Saturday
Boyd (2-2) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits across eight innings but took the loss Saturday against the Royals. He struck out three and did not issue any walks.
ANALYSIS
Boyd got virtually no support in this one, as the Detroit bats mustered only three hits and one run. Still, the lefty was able to continue his strong start to the season. Through five starts, Boyd has a sparkling 1.82 ERA, though he's managed just 22 strikeouts across 34.2 innings. He had a K/9 of 9.0 or better in each of the last two seasons, so perhaps the whiffs will start to come. Boyd will look to keep things rolling in his next scheduled outing Thursday against the White Sox.
Apr 18, 2021
Logs another quality start
Boyd allowed two runs on four hits across 7.1 innings and did not factor into the decision Sunday against the Athletics. He walked one and struck out five.
ANALYSIS
That's now three straight quality starts for Boyd, who narrowly missed another one on Opening Day when he didn't allow a run across 5.2 innings. The good stretch has translated to a 2.03 ERA and 0.98 WHIP for the lefty, and the only thing missing has been strikeouts, as Boyd has only 19 through 26.2 innings. He may need to start missing more bats to sustain this level of success moving forward, but fantasy managers aren't complaining about the performance so far. Boyd will look to keep it rolling Saturday against the Royals.
Apr 14, 2021
Improves to 2-1
Boyd (2-1) allowed one run across 6.2 innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Astros. He gave up six hits and a walk while striking out four.
ANALYSIS
Boyd did well against a strong Houston lineup and didn't allow any flyballs to leave the park, which has been a problem in the past for the lefty. The strikeouts have yet to come for Boyd, as he has just 14 across 19.1 innings so far, but fantasy managers can't complain with his 2-1 record or 1.86 ERA through three appearances. He will look to keep things rolling on the road against the Athletics Sunday
Apr 7, 2021
Fans eight in tough loss
Boyd (1-1) was charged with the loss Wednesday versus the Twins after allowing three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and zero walks over seven innings.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander pitched well throughout the afternoon, but a two-run double from Jorge Polanco during the sixth inning with the Tigers winning 2-1 proved to be the difference. Regardless, Boyd looked good for the second straight outing to begin the season after delivering 5.2 scoreless frames Opening Day, and he'll attempt to keep things rolling at Houston early next week.
Apr 1, 2021
Picks up Opening Day win
Boyd (1-0) allowed three hits and four walks while striking out two over 5.2 scoreless innings as he earned the win against Cleveland on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Boyd only had one scoreless appearance across his 12 starts in 2020, but he began the 2021 campaign on a high note by holding Cleveland scoreless in 5.2 innings on Opening Day. The southpaw allowed baserunners in five of the first six innings Thursday and only struck out two batters, but he entered the win column to begin the regular season. Boyd will attempt to remain effective at home against Minnesota on Wednesday.
Mar 22, 2021
Named Opening Day starter
Boyd was named the Tigers' Opening Day starter Monday and will get the ball April 1 against Cleveland, William Ladson of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran lefty earns the honor for the second season in a row. He wouldn't get the nod on many teams following a season in which he struggled to a 6.71 ERA, but the Tigers' wave of young pitching prospects hasn't been fully established yet, making him the clear top choice with Spencer Turnbull sidelined due to COVID-19 protocols.
Mar 15, 2021
Sharp again Monday
Boyd allowed one earned run on three hits and a walk across four innings of work in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Boyd surrendered a leadoff home run but settled in nicely after that and looked sharp while tossing 60 pitches. He now has seven strikeouts across his last seven Grapefruit League innings, which is right in line with the 9.0 K/9 he registered in 12 starts last season, and he has a spring ERA of 2.00. If the lefty can get closer to his 2019 K/9 of 11.6 this year, he should once again be a solid fantasy asset, even if he doesn't deliver a great ERA or win total.
Mar 10, 2021
Strikes out three Wednesday
Boyd allowed one run across three innings in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. He gave up three hits and a walk, while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
Boyd is off to a solid start this spring, allowing just one run through five innings of work with four strikeouts. It would be nice to see the lefty begin generating more strikeouts in his upcoming Grapefruit League starts, as his K/9 fell to 9.0 last season after sitting at 11.6 in 2019. If Boyd can get the whiffs back up, he should be able to maintain fantasy value even if he struggles with his ratios and wins.
Mar 6, 2021
Makes spring debut
Boyd tossed two scoreless innings in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees. He walked two and struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Boyd made his Grapefruit League debut and was solid against a New York lineup that had most of its regulars. The lefty struggled with a 6.71 ERA and 1.48 WHIP last season, but he also acknowledged pitching through a hamstring injury and plantar fasciitis, which could have impacted his mechanics. If Boyd looks healthy and effective this spring, he could be primed for a bounceback 2021 campaign.
Feb 21, 2021
Tosses bullpen Thursday
Boyd tossed 41 pitches in a bullpen session Thursday and is reportedly ahead of his normal schedule for this point in the spring, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
This is encouraging news early in camp, as Boyd acknowledged that he pitched through a hamstring injury and plantar fasciitis last season. The ailments might have contributed to his subpar 6.71 ERA and 1.48 WHIP, but if he's healthier in 2021, the lefty could return to his 2019 form, when he registered a 4.56 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 238 strikeouts across 185.1 innings.
Jan 29, 2021
Pitched through multiple injuries
Boyd pitched through a hamstring injury suffered during summer training camp, and then later with plantar fasciitis in his left foot over his last couple of starts, Evan Petzold of The Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
It wasn't enough to put Boyd on the IL, but perhaps it should have, as he turned in a 6.71 ERA with 15 homers allowed. "Physically, it affected me in terms of being able to repeat my delivery," Boyd said Monday. "There was no pain for the majority of the year, but my mechanics moved and adapted to where I wasn't able to do the same things on the mound that I used to."
Jan 15, 2021
Won't require arbitration
Boyd and the Tigers reached a one-year, $6.5 million deal Friday, avoiding arbitration, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd received a fairly hefty salary from the Tigers for the 2021 season, and the two sides won't require an arbiter since they were able to strike a deal before Friday's deadline. The lefty logged a 6.71 ERA and 1.48 WHIP over 60.1 innings across 12 starts in 2020 and will attempt to bounce back in 2021.
Sep 20, 2020
Allows five runs in loss
Boyd (2-7) allowed five earned runs on five hits across five innings to take the loss Sunday against Cleveland. He walked one and struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Boyd was unable to duplicate the success from his most recent start, when he tossed 5.2 scoreless innings, and instead reverted back to the poor form he's shown for much of the season. The lefty allowed a two-run home run to Jose Ramirez, and he's now given up 14 long balls in just 54.1 innings. Boyd will carry an unsightly 6.96 ERA into his next outing, which is scheduled for Saturday against the Royals.
Sep 15, 2020
Leads shutout effort
Boyd (2-6) threw 5.2 innings of two-hit ball during the Tigers' 6-0 victory over the Royals on Tuesday. He walked four and struck out five without allowing a run.
ANALYSIS
Boyd picked up his second win in four starts. It was his first appearance without allowing a run in 2020. The effort dropped his season ERA 6.75, which still represents his worst campaign outside of a brief 2015 call-up. Boyd will draw the Indians in his next start over the weekend.
Sep 9, 2020
Rocked for seven runs
Boyd (1-6) took the loss after giving up seven runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and four walks over three innings Wednesday against the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander had a 2.60 ERA and 0.81 WHIP in his previous three starts entering Wednesday, but he found minimal success against the Brewers. Boyd has a 7.63 ERA and 1.60 WHIP through 43.2 innings, and he'll try to turn the page next week against the Royals.
Sep 4, 2020
Pitches well in loss
Boyd (1-5) took the loss in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader against the Twins, allowing two runs across six innings. He gave up four hits and struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
It was an inauspicious first inning for Boyd, who gave up back-to-back home runs to Jorge Polanco and Josh Donaldson to begin the game. However, the lefty settled down from there, as he allowed just two hits the rest of the way. Unfortunately, he got zero run support and was saddled with his fifth loss of the year. Boyd has turned in consecutive quality starts against a strong Minnesota lineup, and he's beginning to look like the ace the Tigers need him to be. His ERA is still high at 6.64, but he'll look to keep lowering that number in his next outing, which is scheduled for Wednesday against the Brewers.
Aug 30, 2020
Turns in best outing of season
Boyd improved to 1-4 while covering a season-high six innings Saturday in the Tigers' 8-2 win over the Twins in the front end of a doubleheader. He gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks while striking out six.
ANALYSIS
While Boyd served up his ninth home run of the season in the outing, that was about the only blemish on his final line. After posting a 10.24 ERA through his first four starts of the season, the southpaw is now beginning to look like the staff ace Detroit had expected him to be over. In his subsequent three turns, Boyd has has submitted a 3.52 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 21:3 K:BB in 15.1 innings.
Aug 28, 2020
No doubleheader Friday
Boyd won't starting Friday against the Tigers as the doubleheader was rained out, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd was originally set to take the mound in Game 1, but the Tigers changed their pitching plans after the start was delayed by rain. One game will be made up via a doubleheader Saturday, and the veteran lefty will take the mound for Game 1. The other game won't be played this weekend and was postponed to a later date.
Aug 28, 2020
Not starting Game 1
Boyd is no longer starting Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader against the Twins, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd was expected to take the mound for the matinee, but the Tigers are now bumping up Tarik Skubal to start for undisclosed reasons. The Twins shifted their starting plans for the twin bill due to the expected rain during the afternoon, but it's unclear if that's the reasoning for the Tigers' change in starters. Boyd tentatively lines up to start Game 2 until the team updates his status.
Aug 27, 2020
Starting Game 1
Boyd will start the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Boyd was initially scheduled to start Thursday's game before the contest was postponed. However, he'll start just one day later as part of a twin bill. The Tigers likely won't need to make any changes to the rotation in the coming days since the team has two scheduled off days next week.
Aug 27, 2020
Start against Twins postponed
Boyd's scheduled start against the Twins on Thursday was postponed, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The two teams decided not to play Thursday's contest in protest of the recent police shooting of Jacob Blake. It's not yet known when the game will be made up or how the team will adjust its starting rotation.
Aug 23, 2020
Shows improvement
Boyd (0-4) allowed two earned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out six across 5.1 innings to take the loss Saturday against Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Boyd had his best start of the season, only his second without allowing a home run. He did not surrender a run while in the game, but exited the contest with runners on first and second that the bullpen allowed to score. It's been an ugly start to the campaign for Boyd, as he has an 8.48 ERA and has allowed 2.5 HR/9 across six starts and 28.2 innings. He'll look to build on this positive outing his next turn through the rotation, currently projected to come Thursday against Minnesota
Aug 18, 2020
Struggles with long ball again
Boyd (0-3) allowed three earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out nine across four innings to take the loss Monday against the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Boyd started the game in abysmal fashion, surrendering back-to-back home runs to Tim Anderson and Yoan Moncada. After allowing another home run to Anderson in the second inning, Boyd did settle in to retire the final seven batters he faced. On a positive note, Boyd also racked up 16 swinging strikes on 90 total pitches to put together his best strikeout performance of the season. However, to be effective, he has to find a way to keep in the yard as he has now allowed 3.1 HR/9, which has led to a horrific 9.64 ERA across 23.1 innings. He'll look to turn things around in his next start, currently projected to come Saturday at Cleveland.
Aug 12, 2020
Gives up seven runs again
Boyd (0-2) took the loss Wednesday against the White Sox after allowing seven runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks across 4.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander's performance was eerily similar to his previous outing, as he also surrendered seven runs over 4.2 innings with five strikeouts and three walks Friday versus the Pirates. Boyd is off to a terrible start with a 10.24 ERA, 1.97 WHIP and 18:8 K:BB through 19.1 innings, and he lines up to face the White Sox again next week.
Aug 8, 2020
Rough outing Friday
Boyd didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 17-13 extra-innings win over the Pirates, coughing up seven runs on eight hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Making his first trip to the mound since July 29 after Detroit's series against St. Louis was postponed, Boyd had difficulty locating his pitches. The southpaw threw 58 of 95 offerings for strikes, and when he did get the ball over the plate, he caught too much of it. Boyd has yet to find the ace-level form he's flashed the last two seasons, but his 13:5 K:BB through 14.2 innings at least suggests his 9.20 ERA and 1.91 WHIP are due for some major regression. His next start is scheduled for Wednesday, at home against the White Sox.

Set to start Friday
Boyd will start Friday against the Pirates, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd had been scheduled to start Tuesday against St. Louis, but that entire four-game midweek series was scrapped due to the Cardinals' coronavirus outbreak. The Tigers will use the unexpected days off to reset their rotation, going with their Opening Day starter for their first day back in action. Boyd has failed to impress in either of his first two starts of the season, allowing eight runs on 15 hits over 10 innings of work.

Scheduled start postponed
Boyd will not make his scheduled start Tuesday against St. Louis as the series has been postponed due to the Cardinals' coronavirus outbreak, Mark Saxon of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
13 members of the Cardinals organization have tested positive for the virus, including seven players. The Tigers have yet to announce their rotation plans for their weekend series in Pittsburgh, which remains on the schedule, but Boyd presumably will start Friday's game.

Allows four runs again
Boyd allowed four earned runs on nine hits across five innings in a no-decision Wednesday against the Royals. He struck out six against zero walks.
ANALYSIS
Boyd had a similar line to his first start of the season, when he also allowed four earned runs across five innings. Like in that outing, the lefty struggled early against Kansas City, as the Royals did all of their damage in the first three innings before Boyd recorded two scoreless innings to end his night. The silver lining Tuesday was that Boyd had more swing-and-miss stuff, as he only recorded two strikeouts in his last start. Boyd will look to pitch better early in the game his next time out Monday against the Cardinals.

Shaky early against Reds
Boyd (0-1) allowed four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two over five innings in a loss to the Reds on Friday.
ANALYSIS
This line is disappointing and it could have been worse. Boyd allowed five straight hitters to reach base -- walk, single, HBP, HBP, single -- before he recorded his first out. The lefty managed to limit the damage to two runs in that first inning, but he later gave up a homer to Joey Votto and the swing-and-miss stuff was just not there in this one. Fortunately, Boyd is in good position to bounce back with a home start against Kansas City next on the docket.

Should start Opening Day
Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire said that Boyd will be the team's Opening Day starter, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd missed an intrasquad outing Tuesday, noting that he was kept out of the stadium due to testing protocol. There was some thought that this delay in his throwing schedule could make him unavailable for Opening Day, but the lefty said he'd pitch on short rest next week to get back on track for the July 24 opener.

Delayed Tuesday due to protocol
Boyd was slated to pitch in an intrasquad game Tuesday but said he "wasn't allowed to come into the field" due to testing protocols, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Tuesday was 10 days before Opening Day for the Tigers, so it was expected that Boyd would pitch to stay lined up for the first game of the season. This explains why he didn't make an appearance, though it's a bit unclear why specifically he was banned from entering the park. The lefty said he would throw on short rest next week, which would put him back on track for the opener.
Jul 14, 2020
Might not start opener
Boyd is scheduled to pitch in Wednesday's intrasquad game for the Tigers, which could put him out of the mix for a start on Opening Day, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Had Boyd pitched in Tuesday's intrasquad game, he would have lined up to throw again five days later, on July 19, and then have another five days before Opening Day on July 24. However, the Tigers elected to not use Boyd Monday, so either they have a slightly different schedule planned for the lefty or they don't intend to start him in the opener. Whether he starts in the first game or not, Boyd figures to be the team's ace this year, and he should rack up plenty of strikeouts even if wins are hard to come by on what is projected to be a rebuilding club.

Aiming for five innings by opener
Tigers pitching coach Rick Anderson said he expects Boyd and the other four member of the Detroit rotation to be stretched out to 75-to-80 pitches by Opening Day, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
That sort of pitch count would put Boyd in line for roughly five innings in his first start, keeping him on track to handle close to a normal workload in his subsequent turns thereafter. Boyd will continue to use summer camp to build up his pitch count, though he had already kept his arm conditioned during MLB's hiatus by tossing about one simulated game per week. Before the league-wide shutdown in spring training, Boyd had been working to make more use of his changeup and curveball as part of a four-pitch mix this season after leaning on the offerings only 6.1 and four percent of the time, respectively, in 2019 (per FanGraphs).

Staying ready with simulated games
Boyd said he's thrown one simulated game per week during the layoff to stay ready for game action, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd added that he recently got up to five innings of work. The lefty can now set his sights toward Opening Day, which is slated for about a month from now following a second spring training in early July. Detroit and other MLB teams are likely to be cautious with their starters to begin the abbreviated season, so Boyd may not go past five innings on the mound anytime soon.

Focused on weight room
Boyd said he plans on getting stronger in the weight room while spring training is suspended and his throwing program is interrupted, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd has remained at the Tigers' facility in Lakeland, Fla., and tried to look on the bright side of the delay, calling it an "awesome opportunity for us to get even stronger." The lefty struggled a bit down the stretch last season after a strong start, so perhaps the emphasis on strength training could help with his endurance whenever the 2020 campaign resumes.

Pitching well this spring
Boyd, who allowed just one run across 4.1 innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Pirates, has a 1.93 ERA this spring.
ANALYSIS
Boyd has looked like the staff leader the Tigers need him to be. He did at times last year, too, as the lefty had a 2.85 ERA through the first two months of the season. However, Boyd struggled some after that and ultimately finished with a 4.56 ERA. The 29-year-old has elite strikeout potential, but he's yet to have a true breakout campaign.
Feb 24, 2020
Strikes out three in spring debut
Boyd took the loss in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros, allowing a solo home run and a walk across two innings of work. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
The outing was a microcosm of Boyd's 2019 campaign, as he gave up plenty of home runs (39, second most in the league) but also racked up the strikeouts (238 in 185.1 innings pitched). The southpaw continues to show glimpses of brilliance, but he's yet to sustain it across a full season. He'll line up as Detroit's unquestioned ace heading into 2020 and will look to improve his consistency on the mound.

Avoids arbitration
Boyd and the Tigers avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $5.3 million deal Friday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Boyd will more than double his $2.6 million salary from the 2019 season. The lefty saw his strikeout rate jump from 22.4 percent to 30.2 percent in his fifth big-league season, though his ERA rose slightly from 4.39 to 4.56.
