Will start Game 1 of World Series
Eovaldi will start Game 1 of the World Series on Friday versus the Diamondbacks, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He'll be facing off against Zac Gallen, who was announced as Arizona's Game 1 starter Wednesday afternoon. Eovaldi has been tremendous so far this postseason, boasting a 4-0 record, 2.42 ERA and 28:4 K:BB through four starts covering 26 innings. He's worked at least six innings each time out.
Oct 23, 2023
Tosses quality start in win
Eovaldi allowed two runs on five hits and three walks over 6.1 innings, earning the win in Sunday's 9-2 victory over the Astros in Game 6 of the ALCS. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi has been lights out in the postseason as he has now pitched his fourth quality start in four games, earning the win each time he has taken the mound. The right-hander appeared to be on the ropes early, allowing an RBI single to Yordan Alvarez in the first inning, but managed to settle in and limit the damage to earn the eighth win of his postseason career. Eovaldi has pitched to an excellent 2.42 ERA and 0.96 WHIP with 28 strikeouts across 26 innings in October.
Oct 14, 2023
Penciled in for Game 2
Eovaldi will start Monday against Houston in Game 2 of the ALCS, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi has been brilliant to start the postseason, allowing just two runs while striking out 15 batters and walking none across 13.2 innings. However, Eovaldi was lit up for four runs in just 1.1 frames during his most recent matchup with Houston in early September.
Oct 8, 2023
Tabbed to start Game 3
Manager Bruce Bochy announced Eovaldi will start Game 3 of the ALDS against the Orioles on Tuesday, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander started Game 2 of the wild-card series against Tampa Bay and allowed just one run on six hits and no walks while striking out eight over 6.2 innings. Eovaldi had a rough finish to the regular season with 15 runs given up across his final three starts, but he didn't let that downturn affect his performance to open the playoffs.
Sep 30, 2023
Struggles in Seattle
Eovaldi (12-5) allowed seven runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five over 3.1 innings to take the loss Friday versus the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
The Mariners did all their damage in the third and fourth innings, sending Eovaldi to the showers early after the back-to-back shaky frames. Over six appearances in September, Eovaldi allowed 21 runs across 20.1 innings with a 21:13 K:BB since returning from a forearm strain. He ends the regular season with a 3.63 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 132:47 K:BB over 144 innings through 25 starts. Given his recent struggles, it's unclear if he'd be part of a potential postseason rotation for the Rangers should they secure a playoff spot.
Sep 25, 2023
Picks up win despite shaky start
Eovaldi (12-4) earned the win over the Mariners on Sunday, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi surrendered solo home runs in the second and third innings, which was just the second time in his last nine starts he's surrendered multiple home runs in a start. He was given a chance for a quality start but allowed the first three batters to reach in the sixth and was pulled for Martin Perez, who would allow all three inherited runners to score. The five earned runs were the most given up by Eovaldi since April 12 and he hadn't given up six hits or more since June 10. He'll have a chance to redeem himself once more before the end of the regular season in a rematch against the Mariners.
Sep 20, 2023
Goes five frames
Eovaldi did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks over five innings in a 6-4 win over Boston. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi took another step toward returning to normal Tuesday, going deeper than 3.1 innings for the first time since coming off the IL in early September while firing 82 pitches. While he certainly hasn't been as effective since being activated (6.75 ERA over 12 innings), Tuesday's contest should give fantasy managers some hope that Eovaldi can provide value during what's left of the regular season. The 33-year-old is tentatively scheduled to take the mound Sunday against the Mariners.
Sep 15, 2023
Builds up to 73 pitches
Eovaldi did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over 3.1 innings against Toronto. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
The 33-year-old had another short outing Thursday, lasting 3.1 innings and surrendering a two-run homer to Vladimir Guerrero. The silver lining is that Eovaldi fired 73 pitches, his most in three starts since returning from the injured list Sept. 5, as he continues to work his way back to a normal workload. In the veteran's previous two outings, he threw 35 and 47 pitches while lasting 1.1 and 2.1 innings, respectively. While it's encouraging to see the pitch count progress, fantasy managers are hoping Eovaldi can improve upon the 7.71 ERA, 2.43 WHIP and 7:6 K:BB he has posted across just seven innings since his return. He is currently slated to make his next start early next week in a home matchup with his former team, the Red Sox.
Sep 10, 2023
Looks better despite short outing
Eovaldi pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in a no-decision against Oakland on Saturday, allowing three hits while issuing two walks and striking out three batters.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi struggled Tuesday in his first game back following a lengthy stay on the injured list, giving up four runs in 1.1 frames against Houston. He looked better Saturday, though he was limited to 2.1 innings despite tossing a modest 47 pitches. That was always the plan for the right-hander -- Rangers manager Bruce Bochy had indicated prior to the outing that Eovaldi was slated for 45-50 pitches due to the recency of his injury and the fact he was pitching on three days of rest. Eovaldi should work his way back up to a normal workload in time, and he is tentatively scheduled to make his next start in Toronto.
Sep 5, 2023
Chased after 1.1 innings
Eovaldi (11-4) took the loss Tuesday, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk over 1.1 innings against the Astros. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
After being sidelined since mid-July with a forearm strain, Eovaldi's long-awaited return was certainly lackluster. He was pulled at 35 pitches and only managed to retire four batters, with just one coming via strikeout. Eovaldi gave up a pair of solo home runs to Jose Altuve as part of a four-run start, raising his ERA from 2.69 to 2.95 on the year. While Tuesday's struggles were uncharacteristic, Eovaldi is in line for another tough matchup next time out against the Blue Jays on the road.
Sep 5, 2023
Reinstated for Tuesday's start
Eovaldi (forearm) was activated from the 15-day injured list ahead of his start against the Astros on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The 33-year-old has been sidelined by a forearm strain since mid-July and has finally been cleared to retake the mound for the Rangers, in what will be just his second start since the All-Star break. Eovaldi is returning without going out on a minor-league rehab assignment, so he'll likely have a limited pitch count in his first couple turns through the rotation. Prior to the injury, the right-hander was in the midst of the most effective campaign of his career with a 2.69 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 111:34 K:BB over 123.2 innings.
Sep 4, 2023
Will start Tuesday
Eovaldi (forearm) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Tuesday's game against the Astros, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi has been given the green light to return from the injured list after going down with a right forearm strain July 30. This figures to be a big boost for the Rangers, who are battling against Houston and Seattle for first place in the AL West. Evodaldi was pitching well prior to his injury, posting a 3.00 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with a 19:15 in his previous five starts (30 innings).
Sep 3, 2023
Could return from IL on Tuesday
Eovaldi (forearm) completed a bullpen session Sunday and could be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Tuesday's game against the Astros, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Rangers have confirmed only Andrew Heaney as a starter for their crucial three-game series with Houston that begins Monday, with starters for Tuesday and Wednesday having yet to be announced. Eovaldi and Max Scherzer (forearm) seem to be tentatively penciled in for the latter two outings, however, after the two hurlers both completed side sessions Sunday. The Rangers will likely check back in with both Eovaldi and Scherzer on Monday before finalizing their plans for the final two games of the series. Assuming Eovaldi checked out fine Monday and is activated to start Tuesday, he could be on a restricted pitch count, given that he hasn't made an appearance for the Rangers since July 18 and didn't complete a minor-league rehab assignment beforehand.
Sep 2, 2023
Throws again Friday
Eovaldi (forearm) threw a bullpen session Friday, Shawn McFarland of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
As scheduled, Eovaldi took the mound Friday for what was expected to be a heavier bullpen session following a lighter one Tuesday. The right-hander suffered a minor setback during his rehab, but the Rangers remain hopeful Eovaldi will not need a rehab start before rejoining the rotation.
Sep 1, 2023
Throws light session
Eovaldi (forearm) threw a light bullpen session Tuesday, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was on a regular track to return from his injury, but the timetable was extended when the right-hander experienced tightness in his side following a bullpen session last week. Texas manager Bruce Bochy said said Tuesday's session went well, and Eovaldi is scheduled to throw a "much heavier" session Friday.
Aug 28, 2023
Side tightness after bullpen
Eovaldi (forearm) felt tightness in his side following a bullpen session last Thursday, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
"There's a little tightness, that's all," Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said. "We're just backing off a little bit so this doesn't get worse." Eovaldi is slated to throw another bullpen session Tuesday, so the side issue doesn't appear to be of major concern. It does push back a potential return date, though, and the team has not yet decided whether the right-hander will need a rehab assignment before sliding back into the rotation. Eovaldi originally went on the injured list back in late July with a strained forearm.
Aug 23, 2023
Another bullpen scheduled
Eovaldi (forearm) will throw a bullpen session Thursday, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
This will be Eovaldi's fourth throwing session and third bullpen. The right-hander also threw live batting practice Monday. Eovaldi appears to be nearing a return with the only issue left to decide is whether he makes a rehab start before being activated.
Aug 22, 2023
Throws to live batters
Eovaldi (forearm) faced batters during a live batting practice session Monday, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was encouraged following the session, estimating that one of the batted balls would have been a hit. The right-hander believes he could get big-league hitters out now if asked to pitch; however, neither Eovaldi nor Texas manager Bruce Bochy would confirm the next step. A rehab start could be in the offing, but the possibility exists Eovaldi could immediately return to the rotation.
Aug 20, 2023
Will face live hitters
Eovaldi (forearm) will throw to live hitters this week while the Rangers are in Arizona for a series against the Diamondbacks, Shawn McFarland of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
The report indicates Eovaldi has thrown three successful bullpen sessions, which includes the one he reportedly was scheduled to throw this weekend. Presumably, there were no issues in the third bullpen session, so the Rangers are moving onto the next step, throwing to live batters. That will happen during the team's two-game series against the Diamondbacks, either Monday or Tuesday.
Aug 17, 2023
Third bullpen scheduled
Eovaldi (forearm) is scheduled to throw another bullpen session this weekend, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi has thrown two encouraging bullpen sessions this week, including Wednesday when he worked the equivalent of two innings. The Rangers presumably will check to see where the right-hander's at following this weekend's session before deciding on next steps.
Aug 15, 2023
Throws another bullpen session
Eovaldi (forearm) threw another bullpen session Tuesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi pitched the equivalent of two innings during his bullpen Tuesday, and the Rangers were encouraged by what they saw. The 33-year-old righty figures to graduate to facing live hitters soon and could return before the end of the month if the team decides to skip a rehab assignment.
Aug 9, 2023
Throws bullpen session
Eovaldi (forearm) threw a 15-20 pitch bullpen session Wednesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi is tentatively slated for a lengthier bullpen session Saturday. The 33-year-old has been out since late July with a right forearm strain and is, at minimum, more than a week away from rejoining the Rangers' rotation. It does appear as though Eovaldi is progressing, though, which is certainly encouraging.
Aug 5, 2023
Ramping up throwing program
Eovaldi (forearm) said Saturday he is pain-free after playing catch from 75 feet, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 33-year-old made 40 throws and should continue building up his arm over the next few days before potentially returning to bullpen sessions. Manager Bruce Bochy said Friday that Eovaldi will be sidelined for at least another 2-to-3 weeks, but the right-hander's return to throwing with no issues is still an encouraging development for his outlook.
Aug 4, 2023
Out another 2-to-3 weeks
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Friday that Eovaldi (forearm) will be out for another 2-to-3 weeks, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Bochy had previously expressed optimism that Eovaldi would be able to return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible next weekend, but the 33-year-old right-hander just resumed throwing on flat ground and still has a lot of hurdles to clear in his recovery from a forearm strain. He's now tracking more toward late August.
Jul 30, 2023
Eyeing minimum-length IL stay
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Sunday that he expects Eovaldi (forearm) to return from the 15-day injured list Aug. 11 when first eligible, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was placed on the IL with a right forearm strain Sunday after he noticed a dip velocity in his most recent start July 18 and still didn't feel 100 percent following a bullpen session in Houston earlier in the week. Though forearm strains often entail absences much longer than 15 days, Bochy and the Rangers brass apparently have optimism that Eovaldi will be able to buck the trend. Bochy noted that he's "pretty confident" with Eovaldi's prognosis moving forward, though the right-hander is still scheduled to meet with Rangers team physician Keith Meister -- who is also a renowned orthopedic surgeon who specializes in elbow and shoulder injuries -- when the team returns to Arlington on Monday.
Jul 30, 2023
Goes on IL with forearm strain
The Rangers placed Eovaldi on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a right forearm strain.
ANALYSIS
Though Eovaldi hadn't pitched since July 18 and was ruled out for his first turn through the rotation earlier this past week, the Rangers opted to keep him on the 26-man active roster with the hope that he would be ready to go the next time a fifth starter was needed. However, after Eovaldi failed to show enough improvement following an extended rest period and was ruled out from making a start Sunday in San Diego, the Rangers decided that they couldn't carry the right-hander on the active roster any longer. Cody Bradford will make another spot start in his stead Sunday, but the newly acquired Max Scherzer will end up taking over Eovaldi's spot in the rotation next week. Eovaldi's placement on the IL is retroactive to Thursday, so he'll be first eligible for activation Aug. 11.
Jul 29, 2023
Start pushed due to elbow soreness
Eovaldi won't start Sunday against the Padres due to some soreness in his elbow, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander had his start skipped early in the week for rest purposes after he had a dip in his velocity during his previous start July 18, but he's apparently dealing with some soreness in his elbow. Manager Bruce Bochy said an MRI came back clean and a trip to the injured list isn't currently being considered, though that could change depending how Eovaldi feels over the next couple days. At the very least he doesn't seem likely to take the mound for the Rangers until at least next weekend's three-game set versus the Marlins.
Jul 26, 2023
Lined up for Sunday
Eovaldi (rest) is likely to return to the Rangers' rotation Sunday at San Diego, Nathan Han of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was skipped on his last turn earlier this week in Houston for rest purposes, but there are no physical concerns beyond a slight velocity dip and a decreased strikeout rate. The 33-year-old right-hander stands 11-3 with a brilliant 2.69 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 111:34 K:BB through 123.2 innings (19 starts) this season with Texas.
Jul 23, 2023
Skipping start this week
Manager Bruce Bochy said Sunday that Eovaldi will have his turn in the rotation skipped during the upcoming three-game series in Houston, which begins Monday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi has delivered scoreless outings in two of his past three starts but has just 10 total strikeouts across 18.1 innings as he's experienced a dip in his velocity, so the Rangers have decided to give him some extra rest. As a result, Jon Gray (leg) will be moved up a day to start Monday. Eovaldi could re-enter the rotation during the three-game set at San Diego next weekend.
Jul 19, 2023
Six scoreless in win
Eovaldi (11-3) earned the win Tuesday versus the Rays after he allowed two hits and three walks over six shutout innings. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi set a season-low with just a pair of strikeouts and walked at least three batters for the third straight start, but he still produced his seventh scoreless outing of the year. The right-hander's command hasn't been great for the past month-plus with 20 walks issued across his past 43.1 frames, but he still has a 3.53 ERA and 1.15 WHIP during that stretch. He's tied for the major-league lead in wins with four other pitchers.
Jul 7, 2023
Struggles against Red Sox
Eovaldi allowed four runs on five hits and four walks while striking out three batters over 5.1 innings in a no-decision against Boston on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was in trouble from the outset of his outing, allowing the first two batters he faced to reach base in a one-run first inning. He didn't record a 1-2-3 frame until the fifth, and he was lifted with one out in the sixth to finish with his shortest start since May 29. Eovaldi had a 2.24 season ERA at the end of scoreless six-inning appearance against Seattle on June 4, but that mark has risen to 2.83 over the course of his past six starts. Not coincidentally, the right-hander's control has faltered during that stretch -- he's issued 17 free passes over his past 37.1 innings after walking just 14 batters across his initial 80.1 frames of the campaign.
Jul 2, 2023
Seven scoreless innings in win
Eovaldi (10-3) earned the win Saturday, allowing two hits and four walks over seven scoreless innings against Houston. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi tossed at least seven scoreless innings for the fourth time this year and picked up his 10th win. Barring some issues with his velocity, the veteran's first season in Texas has been phenomenal thus far, as he sports career-best marks in ERA (2.64) and WHIP (0.99) across 17 starts. With Jacob deGrom (elbow) set to miss the remainder of the season, Eovaldi is now the ace of the Rangers' rotation and will look to continue putting up dominating performances. His next start is projected for a three-game set against his former team, the Red Sox.
Jun 25, 2023
Five strikeouts in no-decision
Eovaldi did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over 5.2 innings against the Yankees. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Coming into Sunday, Eovaldi had given up 11 runs over his last three starts, including five home runs, but the right-hander kept the ball in the park Sunday and allowed two or fewer runs for just the second time in June. However, he failed to complete the sixth inning for the first time since May 29. Despite his recent struggles, Eovaldi has still been sharp overall and sports a 2.18 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 101:23 K:BB across 16 appearances (105.1 innings). His next start is lined up for a three-game weekend series versus Houston.
Jun 25, 2023
Explains velocity dip
Eovaldi said Saturday that a "mechanical issue" was the root cause in a decrease in velocity during his last start, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi struggled over six innings against the White Sox last Tuesday, and his dip in fastball velocity prompted speculation. The right-hander averaged 93.8 mph, his lowest of the season and second lowest since beginning of 2022. "I'm aware that my velocity was down [Tuesday]," Eovaldi said Saturday. "But I'm like, OK, I've got four different pitches. If I learned anything from last year, it's that even if velocity wasn't there, I can still go out and compete without my mid-90s fastball. I felt fine." Rangers manager Bruce Bochy doesn't appear to be worried, as he moved up Eovaldi's next start from Monday (against Detroit) to Sunday's series finale against the Yankees. When the Rangers have an off day, as they did Thursday, Bochy typically gives a starter an extra day of rest but opted to have Eovaldi pitch on normal rest.
Jun 21, 2023
Struggles against ChiSox
Eovaldi did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks over six innings against the White Sox. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi struggled with the long ball Tuesday, surrendering a two-run home run to Eloy Jiminez in the first and a solo homer to Elvis Andrus in the fifth to mark his second straight start giving up multiple homers after doing so just once all season. After allowing one or no runs in six of his previous seven starts, Eovaldi has given up at least three runs in three consecutive appearances and sports a 5.12 ERA with a 19:7 K:BB while giving up five homers.
Jun 15, 2023
Fans nine in loss
Eovaldi (9-3) took the loss Thursday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over seven innings against the Angels. He struck out nine.
ANALYSIS
Despite taking his first loss since April 12, Eovaldi racked up another quality start, moving him up to 11th in MLB with nine on the year. He was tagged for two solo homers on the day, one by Chad Wallach in the second and the other by Mickey Moniak in the seventh. Across his last two appearances, Eovaldi has combined for seven earned runs and a 3:1 K:BB over 13.1 innings after allowing four runs with a 46:9 K:BB in his seven previous starts (52.2 innings). The 33-year-old is expected to toe the rubber next against the White Sox in Chicago.
Jun 11, 2023
Notches ninth victory
Eovaldi (9-2) earned the win over Tampa Bay on Saturday, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out six batters over 6.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
This won't go down as one of Eovaldi's best starts this season, but he was staked to an early lead and cruised to the win, with the only hiccup being a four-run fourth inning by the Rays. Eovaldi is now tied with Tampa Bay ace Shane McClanahan for the MLB lead in victories on the campaign, and he hasn't been stuck with a loss since April 12. The right-hander's 2.49 ERA and 0.98 WHIP are easily on pace for the best marks of his career.
Jun 4, 2023
Cruises to eighth win
Eovaldi (8-2) allowed one hit and struck out seven over six scoreless innings to earn the win Sunday over the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was given plenty of support early on and left with a 12-0 lead after six dominant frames. This was the right-hander's fifth scoreless outing of the season, all of which have come in his last seven starts. He's won six times in that span. Eovaldi is at a 2.24 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 77:14 K:BB through 80.1 innings over 12 appearances this season, cementing himself as one of the top pitchers in 2023. His next start is projected to be a tough one on the road versus the Rays.
May 29, 2023
Five scoreless in win
Eovaldi (7-2) earned the win Monday, allowing four hits and three walks across five scoreless innings during a 5-0 win over Detroit. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi needed 95 pitches (57 strikes) to tie his season low with five innings, but he did't allow a run for the fourth time this year. Since serving up six runs to the Royals on April 12, the veteran right-hander has been dominant, surrendering just nine earned runs over his past eight starts (58.2 innings). Overall, Eovaldi sports a 2.42 ERA and 1.00 WHIP across his first 10 outings with the Rangers, which would both be career highs. His next start is tentatively scheduled for the finale of a three-game weekend set versus Seattle.
May 23, 2023
Records second complete game
Eovaldi (6-2) earned the win Tuesday, allowing one run on six hits and a walk over 9 innings against the Pirates. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
It's been an incredible run for Eovaldi. He's pitched eight or more innings in four of his last five outings while tallying seven straight quality starts. The 33-year-old Eovaldi's ERA is down to 2.60 with a 0.97 WHIP and 66:11 K:BB through a league-leading 69.1 innings. The right-hander has established himself as an elite fantasy option in his first season with the Rangers.
May 17, 2023
Goes seven innings in no-decision
Eovaldi allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five over seven innings in a no-decision versus Atlanta on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The runs against Eovaldi came via the long ball -- Eddie Rosario hit a two-run blast in the second inning and Ronald Acuna added a solo shot in the sixth. Prior to Wednesday, Eovaldi had given up just one homer all season. The right-hander continues to pitch like an ace for the Rangers, as this was his sixth straight quality start. He has a 2.83 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 61:10 K:BB through 60.1 innings over nine starts. Eovaldi is projected for a road start in Pittsburgh next week.
May 12, 2023
Spins another gem
Eovaldi (5-2) earned the win Thursday, tossing 8.2 shutout innings while allowing just three hits to Oakland. He struck out 12.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi came up one out short of the complete game, as he allowed a double and a walk with two outs in the ninth. Will Smith came in to close the door and preserve the shutout. Eovaldi had a 5.20 ERA after five starts, but he has been incredible recently. Over his last three outings, the righty has pitched 25.2 scoreless innings. His ERA has plummeted to 2.70.
May 7, 2023
Stays dialed in versus Angels
Eovaldi (4-2) earned the win Saturday over the Angels, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out five over eight scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was excellent for the second start in a row, and a ninth-inning eruption by the Rangers solidified his third win in his last four outings. He hasn't allowed a run in 17 innings over his last two starts, lowering his ERA to 3.22 with a 1.10 WHIP and 44:7 K:BB across 44.2 innings through seven appearances this season. Eovaldi has quality starts in four straight games, and he'll look to keep rolling in Oakland next week.
Apr 29, 2023
Dazzles with shutout
Eovaldi (3-2) earned the win Saturday, with a three-hit shutout against the Yankees. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was handed a two-run lead in the fifth inning and made it stand up. He delivered a 113-pitch masterpiece, which included retiring the final 15 batters he faced. Eovaldi hadn't pitched past the sixth inning this season before Saturday, but he dominated a Yankees lineup without Aaron Judge. The 33-year-old dropped his ERA to 3.93.
Apr 25, 2023
Gives up four runs in six innings
Eovaldi did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and one walk over six innings during a 7-6 loss the Reds. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
The Reds took an 1-0 lead in the first inning on a throwing error from Josh Jung, but the Rangers responded with five unanswered runs before Eovaldi was tagged for three earned runs in the third. The right-hander was able to get through three more innings and was in line for the win until Cincinnati made a late-inning comeback. Eovaldi has gotten through six innings in three consecutive starts and currently holds a 5.20 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP with a 31:5 K:BB across his first five outings (27.2 innings).
Apr 19, 2023
Picks up win No. 2
Eovaldi (2-2) secured the victory Tuesday over the Royals, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out five over six innings.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi tossed his first quality start of the year and had a nice bounce back game after the Royals pummeled him for six runs on April 12. He got off to an undesirable start, however, after giving up a leadoff triple to Bobby Witt and allowing him to score on a sacrifice fly. He wound up surrendering another run in the fourth but otherwise held the Royals in check for the majority of the game. The 33-year-old lowered his ERA to a 5.40 to go along with a 1.48 WHIP and a 24:4 K:BB over 21.2 innings. He'll look to build off the strong start in a projected road matchup with the Reds next week.
Apr 13, 2023
Tagged for 10 runs in loss
Eovaldi (1-2) took the loss against Kansas City on Wednesday, completing five frames and allowing six runs on 10 hits while striking out seven batters.
ANALYSIS
The Royals racked up four extra-base hit against Eovaldi, including Vinnie Pasquantino's solo homer in the third inning. Though Eovaldi didn't walk any batters for the first time this season and tallied a campaign-best seven punchouts, he couldn't overcome a flurry of 10 total hits that led to six runs. The right-hander has gone at least five innings in all three of his starts so far this season, but he currently holds a 6.32 ERA and 1.53 WHIP. Eovaldi's fantasy managers may find hope, however, in the fact that he's yielded an unusually high .444 BABIP and that his FIP currently sits at a much more promising 2.39.

Gets little help in loss
Eovaldi (1-1) took the loss Friday, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk over 5.2 innings as the Rangers fell 2-0 to the Cubs. he struck out six.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander put together a strong outing, coming one out short of a quality start and tossing 56 of 89 pitches for strikes, but he got outdueled by Marcus Stroman. Eovaldi will take a 4.22 ERA and 12:3 K:BB through 10.2 innings into his next start, likely to come at home next week against the Royals.
Apr 3, 2023
Will make next scheduled start
Eovaldi, who was hit on the right leg by a comebacker Saturday, said he had no residual effects Sunday and remains scheduled to start Friday, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi wasn't at his best but didn't need to be, as Texas gave him plenty of support in a 16-3 win over Philadelphia.
Apr 1, 2023
Gets plenty of support in win
Eovaldi (1-0) picked up the win Saturday, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks over five innings in a 16-3 rout of the Phillies. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander wasn't at his sharpest, throwing 49 of 83 pitches for strikes, but Eovaldi got all the run support he could have asked for. The 33-year-old has posted an ERA between 3.72 and 3.87 and a WHIP between 1.19 and 1.23 in each of the last three seasons, an impressive run of consistency, but after making only 20 starts in 2022 it's Eovaldi's ability to stay healthy that will be the biggest driver of his fantasy value. His next outing is scheduled for next weekend on the road against the Cubs.
Mar 22, 2023
Sharp again Wednesday
Eovaldi threw five scoreless innings in a Cactus League start Wednesday against the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Deploying mostly cutters and sliders, Eovaldi scattered five hits and one walk across his five scoreless frames while racking up four strikeouts. He has yet to allow a run through 10.1 innings this spring and boasts an overall 13:1 K:BB. The 33-year-old right-hander battled a side injury in the early part of camp but now looks fully ready to take his first scheduled turn in the Rangers' season-opening starting rotation. Texas signed Eovaldi to a two-year, $34 million contract in December.
Mar 18, 2023
Returns to spring rotation
Eovaldi (side) allowed four hits and struck out five over 3.1 scoreless innings in Friday's spring start against the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
This was Eovaldi's second Cactus League start but first since he sustained a side injury at the beginning of the month. The right-hander's fastball sat in the upper 90s, touching 99 mph multiple times, per Kennedi Landry of MLB.com. "I felt like I was ahead in the counts, felt like I used all my pitches," the pitcher said. "The only thing I need to work on doing better at is executing with two strikes." With Jacob deGrom ready to start Sunday, it looks like the Rangers' projected rotation is healthy as the regular season looms. As suggested earlier by manager Bruce Bochy, both Eovaldi and deGrom cold be on restricted counts early.
Mar 16, 2023
Like to be restricted early
Texas manager Bruce Bochy acknowledged that Eovaldi (side) is likely to be on a restrictive pitch count to start the season, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
The reports indicates a pitch count for both Eovaldi and Jacob deGrom (side) in the 75 to 80 range, which roughly translates to five innings. In that event, Dane Dunning, Glenn Otto or Cole Ragans could act as a piggyback option. Eovaldi recently returned to game action, firing off a couple of innings against Double-A hitters.
Mar 15, 2023
Faces Double-A hitters
Eovaldi (side) threw two innings against Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Monday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi, who battled tightness in his left side, allowed a pair of hits and struck out two while landing 22 of 29 pitches in the zone. "It's definitely nice being back out there. I threw all my pitches and mixed everything in there. There were a couple times where I was 0-2 or 1-2 on guys and just didn't quite finish the pitches where I wanted to," the right-hander said. Eovaldi expects to be ready for the start of the regular season. He could get as many as three more appearances leading up to Opening Day.
Mar 12, 2023
Starting Triple-A game Monday
Eovaldi (side) will start the Rangers' Triple-A game in Surprise on Monday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Both Eovaldi and Jacob deGrom (side) will be in action Monday, but on the backfields of Surprise Stadium rather than in the MLB portion. Eovaldi has been out of action because of tightness in his left side, but the shutdown appears to be more cautionary than concerning. Assuming good health over the next few weeks, there's a good chance Eovaldi is a part of the Rangers' rotation to begin the 2023 season.
Mar 8, 2023
Will throw light bullpen session
Eovaldi (side) will throw a light bullpen session Wednesday, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
While not a full bullpen session, it's a nice step as this will be Eovaldi's first time on the bump since he had some left side tightness crop up last week. He's more built up than most others in camp because he had been preparing for the World Baseball Classic, so Eovaldi should be good to go for the regular season if he can avoid setbacks.
Mar 7, 2023
Yet to resume mound work
Eovaldi (side) has not yet been cleared to resume throwing off a mound, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander is making progress in his recovery from left side stiffness, though, according to Rangers general manager Chris Young. Young also noted that because Eovaldi came to camp more built up in preparation of the World Baseball Classic (he's since dropped out), the missed time isn't expected to be a significant setback. The Rangers remain optimistic he'll be ready for Opening Day.
Mar 1, 2023
Battling side tightness
Eovaldi will not make his next scheduled Cactus League start due to left side tightness, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Rangers general manager Chris Young compared Eovaldi's situation to that of Jacob deGrom's in that it will set the right-hander back a bit but is not expected to affect his Opening Day availability. Eovaldi pitched well in his Cactus League debut over the weekend but it's not clear when he'll be able to make another start. The Rangers will obviously be extra cautious.
Feb 26, 2023
Perfect in debut
Eovaldi struck out four over two scoreless innings in Saturday's spring game against Kansas City. "I was able to throw all my pitches. The cutter was good, the split was good, the curve was my best pitch," the pitcher told Tim Colishaw of the Dallas Morning News.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi faced the six-batter minimum in his debut in a Rangers' uniform. The right-hander was no surprise, hitting 98 MPH repeatedly and topping out at 99. Eovaldi threw just 19 pitches and tossed another 10 in the bullpen following his time in the game, which lasted no more than 10 minutes thanks to the new pitch clock. He's expected to serve as the No. 2 starter behind Jacob deGrom.
Dec 27, 2022
Lands with Rangers
Eovaldi agreed to a contract with the Rangers on Tuesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi missed a solid chunk of last season with back and shoulder injuries, though he was able to turn in a decent season while healthy. (3.87 ERA, 1.23 WHIP) If he can break his norm and avoid the injured list in 2023, Eovaldi will provide a solid addition to the middle of Texas' greatly-transformed rotation.
Nov 15, 2022
Declines qualifying offer
Eovaldi declined Boston's qualifying offer Tuesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi turned down the one-year, $19.65 million deal in search of a longer contract. He should be able to find one, but his market will be affected by the draft-pick compensation that's now attached to him, as well as the fact that he's heading into his age-33 season and made no more than 21 starts in six of the last seven years, including just 20 last season.
Oct 4, 2022
Earns win in shortened game
Eovaldi (6-3) earned the win Tuesday, allowing no runs on two hits and two walks over five innings with four strikeouts against Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
In his las start of the season and second since returning from the injured list, Eovaldi tossed five scoreless innings on just 64 pitches. The effort was technically a complete game as the game was called short after five innings due to rain. Eovaldi likely would have gone deeper in the game as he worked up to 72 pitches in his prior start. He finishes the season with a 3.87 ERA and 1.23 WHIP over 109.1 innings with 103 strikeouts.
Sep 30, 2022
Throws 72 pitches in return
Eovaldi allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and no walks while striking out three across 4.2 innings Thursday against Baltimore. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was activated from the injured list Thursday to make his first start since Aug. 12. He was limited to 72 pitches as a result and was largely effective, though he had only six swinging strikes. Eovaldi is projected to draw one more start this season, and he's maintained a 4.05 ERA with a 99:18 K:BB across 104.1 frames on the campaign.
Sep 29, 2022
Reinstated from injured list
Eovaldi (shoulder) was activated from the injured list Thursday.
ANALYSIS
After missing just shy of seven weeks with his injury, Eovaldi will return to action and start Thursday against the Orioles. If all goes well in his first game back, he will likely take the ball once more before Boston's season comes to a close.
Sep 28, 2022
On track to return Thursday
The Red Sox list Eovaldi (shoulder) as their scheduled starting pitcher for Thursday's game against the Orioles at Fenway Park.
ANALYSIS
Boston will likely wait until Thursday to officially reinstate Eovaldi from the 15-day injured list, where he's resided since Aug. 23 due to right shoulder inflammation. The 32-year-old is rejoining the Boston rotation after completing a three-inning rehab start at Triple-A Worcester last weekend, so he'll likely be on a more limited pitch count than usual when he takes the mound Thursday. After his start against the Orioles, Eovaldi should line up for one more outing in 2022 next week before he hits free agency this winter.
Sep 26, 2022
Closing in on return
Eovaldi (shoulder) will be reinstated from the 15-day injured list to start at some point during Boston's upcoming series against Baltimore, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Boston's coaching staff met Monday to determine the next steps in Eovaldi's recovery process and ultimately determined that the right-hander is ready to make two more starts for the Red Sox prior to the end of the regular season. He hasn't pitched in the big leagues since Aug. 12 but recently made a rehab appearance at Triple-A Worcester in which he allowed three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four in three innings.
Sep 25, 2022
Decision coming Monday
The Red Sox coaching staff will meet Monday to decide the next step for Eovaldi (shoulder), Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox were expected to decide next steps over the weekend, but Boston manager Alex Cora wants to take an extra day. Eovaldi hurled three innings Friday in a rehab start for Triple-A Worcester, during which the right-hander was mechanically off and gave up three hits, two walks and three runs. Boston manager Alex Cora said the pitcher was fine health-wise.
Sep 24, 2022
Works three inning on rehab
Eovaldi (shoulder) allowed three runs on three hits and two walks while striking four in a rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on Friday, the Red Sox's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi threw 57 pitches (35 strikes) after throwing 65 pitches in a simulated game at to start the week. That puts him in line for a potential start in the majors before the season's end. The Red Sox will decide this weekend whether Eovaldi's next start will be for Boston. The right-hander last pitched for the Red Sox on Aug. 12.
Sep 22, 2022
Rehab outing set
Eovaldi (shoulder) will make a rehab start Friday with Triple-A Worcester, Joe McDonald of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander threw 65 pitches over four innings during a simulated game Sunday and will now head to the minors for a rehab outing. Given Eovaldi should continue building up his workload Friday, and if all goes well with Worcester he should be able to rejoin Boston's rotation next week.
Sep 18, 2022
Builds up to 65 pitches
Eovaldi (shoulder) threw four innings and 65 pitches in Sunday's simulated game and looked good, according to manager Alex Cora, Steve Hewitt of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
The next step for Eovaldi is to be determined, but it seems like he could rejoin the rotation next week if the Red Sox want to go that route. If he does return next week, he would line up to pitch next weekend in Yankee Stadium.
Sep 14, 2022
Throwing another live BP
Eovaldi (shoulder) will throw another live BP on Sunday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi threw three innings of live batting practice Tuesday and will face hitters once again in a controlled environment this weekend. It's still possible that the right-hander requires a rehab assignment after Sunday's throwing session, and the Red Sox have emphasized that they don't intend to rush him back.
Sep 14, 2022
Throws three innings of live BP
Eovaldi (shoulder) threw three innings of live batting practice Tuesday, the Red Sox' official site reports. "Yeah, he went three [innings]. That's a good sign," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "Now we'll just have to wait and see how he reacts to it and we'll decide what we're going to do."
ANALYSIS
Cora indicated the goal was for Eovaldi to pitch two innings, but the right-hander felt good and kept pitching. Once he's evaluated Wednesday, Eovaldi could make a rehab start in the minors as early as this weekend.
Sep 13, 2022
Advances to live BP
Eovaldi (shoulder) will throw a live batting practice session Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
He has been playing catch and throwing bullpen sessions, so this will mark another step in his throwing program. It's unclear how much more work Eovaldi will do on the side before coming off the injured list.
Sep 9, 2022
Throwing another bullpen Sunday
Eovaldi (shoulder) will play catch Saturday and throw a bullpen session Sunday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Alex Cora said in early September that Eovaldi wasn't progressing as quickly as hoped, but the right-hander threw a bullpen late last week and will throw off a mound once again Sunday. The team remains hopeful that Eovaldi will be able to return from the injured list this season, and his next steps will likely be determined based on how he feels early next week.
Sep 2, 2022
Throws bullpen Friday
Eovaldi (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Friday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Alex Cora said Friday that Eovaldi wasn't progressing as quickly as hoped, but it was encouraging that the right-hander was able to throw off a mound Friday. He's expected to throw another bullpen session Monday, so it seems possible that he'll be able to return prior to the end of the regular season.
Sep 1, 2022
Not progressing as hoped
Eovaldi (shoulder) threw recently but isn't progressing as quickly as the team had hoped, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi threw a bullpen session Monday and was expected to face hitters soon, but the Red Sox seem to be slowing his rehab process due to his lack of progress in recent days. It's not yet clear when the right-hander will ultimately be able to face hitters, but it's still possible that he rejoins Boston's rotation at some point in September.
Aug 31, 2022
Facing hitters next
Eovaldi (shoulder) will face hitters in batting practice of a minor-league rehab stint.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi threw a second bullpen session Monday, and facing live batters is the next step for the right-hander. Presumably, Eovaldi will rejoin the club in September when rosters are expanded to 28 players.
Aug 30, 2022
Tosses another bullpen
Eovadli (shoulder) threw another bullpen session Monday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander returned to the mound with a 25-pitch session Friday, and he continued his throwing program Monday with another bullpen session. Eovaldi landed on the shelf Aug. 23 with right shoulder inflammation, but his quick return to mound work is a strong indication it won't be a lengthy absence.
Aug 27, 2022
Throws 25-pitch bullpen
Eovaldi (shoulder) threw 25 pitches during a bullpen session Friday, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi resumed throwing Wednesday and felt good while throwing all five of his pitches during Friday's throwing session. The right-hander will likely throw another side session in the coming days, and manager Alex Cora expects Eovaldi to make at least one rehab start prior to returning from the injured list.
Aug 25, 2022
Starts throwing again
Eovaldi (shoulder) played catch Wednesday and could throw a bullpen session Friday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi looks to be making positive progress in his recovery from right shoulder inflammation, which kept him from pitching since Aug. 12 before he was finally placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday. As a result of the delayed IL placement, Eovaldi won't be eligible to return until next weekend at the earliest, but that could be a realistic target for the right-hander if he continues to navigate the buildup process without any setbacks. Brayan Bello will fill Eovaldi's spot in the rotation for the time being.
Aug 23, 2022
Moves to IL
The Red Sox placed Eovaldi on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with right shoulder inflammation, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was deactivated after he demonstrated little progress in recent days in his recovery from the shoulder issue, which resulted in him being scratched ahead of his start against the Pirates last week. Boston summoned Josh Winckowski from Triple-A Worcester to replace Eovaldi in the rotation beginning with Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays.
Aug 22, 2022
Likely heading to injured list
Eovaldi (shoulder/neck) will likely require a trip to the injured list, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was scratched from his scheduled start last Thursday due to soreness in his neck and shoulder area, and Josh Winckowski will take his place as the starter Tuesday against the Blue Jays. Although Eovaldi's scratch was initially considered precautionary, he hasn't responded to treatment as well as the team had hoped, and he'll require additional time to recover. If Winckowski performs well as Tuesday's starter, it's possible that he'll remain in the rotation until Eovaldi is ultimately cleared to return.
Aug 21, 2022
Won't be available Tuesday
Manager Alex Cora said Eovaldi (shoulder/neck) won't be available to start Tuesday's home game against the Blue Jays as the Red Sox had hoped, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was scratched ahead of his most recent scheduled start last Thursday in Pittsburgh after he experienced soreness in his neck and shoulder area. At the time, Eovaldi's scratch was viewed as mostly precautionary, but Cora relayed that the right-hander hasn't responded to treatment as well as the Red Sox had hoped over the past few days. Cora noted that an IL stint could be on the table for Eovaldi, but the team may wait until after Monday's off day before officially deciding on his status.
Aug 18, 2022
Scratched with sore neck, shoulder
Eovaldi was scratched from his scheduled start Thursday at Pittsburgh due to soreness in his neck and shoulder area, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi said he still believes he could pitch Thursday, but the Red Sox will exercise caution and with the veteran right-hander. At this point it seems likely Eovaldi will simply be skipped for one turn through the rotation, and he should be considered day-to-day for the time being. Josh Winckowski will make a spot start Thursday for Boston.
Aug 12, 2022
Tosses quality start
Eovaldi allowed two runs on eight hits across six innings of work in a no-decision Friday against the Yankees, striking out three while walking two.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi's 11.6 percent strikeout rate and 1.67 WHIP in the outing weren't particularly encouraging, but he worked out enough enough jams to keep the Red Sox in a game they'd eventually win. Seven of his 10 baserunners and both of his two runs allowed came in his first three frames, but he settled down after that and exited with his team down 2-1. It hasn't been a great season for Eovaldi, whose ERA now sits at 4.15, but he's at least now thrown at least six innings in four straight outings, posting a 3.70 ERA over that stretch. He'll look to keep that run going next week against the Pirates.
Aug 7, 2022
Takes no-decision in KC
Eovaldi allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out seven in six innings, taking a no-decision versus the Royals on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi gave up solo home runs to MJ Melendez and Kyle Isbel as well as a two-run single to Bobby Witt. This was the second time in his last five starts Eovaldi has avoided walking a batter, though he's given up at least three runs in four of those outings. The mid-season slump has him at a 4.23 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 93:16 K:BB across 93.2 innings through 17 starts this year. The 32-year-old is projected for a home start against the Yankees next week.
Aug 2, 2022
Sharper in fifth win
Eovaldi (5-3) earned the win Monday over the Astros. He allowed two unearned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six in 6.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
A pair of errors in the third inning put two Astros in scoring position with no outs. One came home on a sacrifice fly and the other on a double, but Eovaldi was able to limit the damage there, at one point retiring 12 straight batters before Martin Maldonado's seventh-inning single ended his night. This is the best Eovaldi's looked in his four starts since returning from a back injury, and it's encouraging it came against a strong opponent. The right-hander has a 4.11 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 86:16 K:BB through 87.2 innings across 16 starts. If Eovaldi isn't traded ahead of Tuesday's deadline, he's lined up for a road start in Kansas City this weekend.
Jul 27, 2022
Struggles against Guardians
Eovaldi allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits and no walks while striking out one in six innings in a no-decision versus the Guardians on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi left the game with a lead despite his shaky pitching, but the Red Sox's bullpen couldn't make it last. He's now allowed 17 runs (15 earned) in 13 innings across his last three starts since returning from a back injury, which suggests he may not be feeling at his best. The right-hander has a 4.32 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 80:14 K:BB through 81.1 innings in 15 starts this year. He's lined up for a tough road start in Houston next week.
Jul 23, 2022
Hammered for nine runs
Eovaldi (4-3) allowed nine runs on eight hits and two walks over 2.2 innings Friday, striking out three and taking the loss against Toronto.
ANALYSIS
It was a nightmare outing for Eovaldi who gave up three runs in the first two innings before falling apart even further in the third. He gave up just one homer, a two-run shot by Matt Chapman in the second. His season ERA jumped nearly a full run Friday, from 3.34 to 4.30 through 14 starts. Eovaldi has given up 12 runs through seven innings in two starts since returning from the injured list. He's lined up to face Cleveland at home next week.
Jul 16, 2022
No-decision in return
Eovaldi didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 5-4 extra-innings win over the Yankees, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Making his first start after returning from a five-week absence due to lower back inflammation, Eovaldi looked a bit rusty and managed only nine swinging strikes among his 78 pitches. The right-hander will take a 3.34 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 76:12 K:BB through 72.2 innings into the All-Star break, but his 4.59 FIP and 2.11 HR/9 suggest he could be headed for a bumpier second half.
Jul 15, 2022
Activated prior to start
Eovaldi (back) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list ahead of Friday's start against the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi tossed three innings during a rehab start at Triple-A Worcester on Sunday and allowed two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out four. After spending just over a month on the injured list due to lower back and hip issues, the right-hander will rejoin the Red Sox to make one final start prior to the All-Star break. Although Eovaldi will be pitching on normal rest Friday, it's possible that he'll be capped somewhere between 70 and 90 pitches since he wasn't able to get fully stretched out during his rehab assignment.
Jul 12, 2022
In line to start Friday
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Monday that Eovaldi (back) is in line to be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Friday's game against the Yankees in New York, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi's return for the series opener in New York will likely be contingent on him completing a between-starts bullpen session Tuesday without incident. The right-hander is coming off a three-inning rehab appearance at Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, with Eovaldi striking out four and allowing two earned runs on five hits and no walks in the 54-pitch outing. Since he was sidelined for more than a month with lower back and hip issues and didn't get fully stretched out during his rehab assignment, Eovaldi could be capped at somewhere between 70 and 90 pitches Friday.
Jul 11, 2022
Goes three innings in rehab start
Eovaldi (back) struck out four and allowed two earned runs on five hits and no walks over three innings Sunday in his rehab start with Triple-A Worcester.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi threw 54 pitches (40 strikes) in the start and showcased a fastball that topped out at 97 miles per hour, according to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe. Speier notes that Eovaldi will meet with the Red Sox training staff Monday, and if the team is satisfied with how he checked out physically following the rehab start, he could be activated from the 15-day injured list as soon as Friday to make a start during Boston's weekend series versus the Yankees.
Jul 7, 2022
Rehab assignment on tap
Eovaldi (back) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi threw live batting practice Tuesday, and his fastball reached 96 mph during the throwing session. In spite of his encouraging performance, he'll require at least one appearance in the minors prior to rejoining Boston's rotation. The Red Sox haven't yet revealed how many rehab appearances the right-hander requires, but it's possible that he's able to make a start in the majors shortly before the All-Star break.
Jul 5, 2022
Faces hitters Tuesday
Eovaldi (back) threw live batting practice Tuesday at Fenway Park, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
According to Speier, Eovaldi's fastball topped out at 96 miles per hour and sat around the 94-to-95 range for most of the session, a sign that his lingering back injury isn't hindering him too much at this point. The Red Sox will likely reassess Eovaldi on Wednesday before decide whether he's fit to return from the 15-day injured list to make a start in this weekend's series with the Yankees or if he'll need a brief minor-league rehab assignment beforehand.
Jul 2, 2022
Tosses 35 pitches Saturday
Eovaldi (back) threw 35 pitches during a bullpen session Saturday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi landed on the 15-day injured list with lower back inflammation June 12 and was initially optimistic that he'd require a minimal absence. Although he made slow progress early in his recovery, he's thrown two bullpen sessions in the last four days and should continue to ramp up his workload in the near future. It's not yet clear when he'll be cleared to return or whether he'll require a rehab assignment.
Jun 28, 2022
Bullpen session coming
Eovaldi (back) played catch Monday and is expected to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wednesday's session will be Eovaldi's first time throwing off a mound since he landed on the injured list June 12. The right-hander is not currently with the team on its road trip.
Jun 17, 2022
Likely out longer than 15 days
Eovaldi (back) is progressing slower than expected and is unlikely to return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox were initially hopeful that Eovaldi would be back after spending the minimum of 15 days on the IL, but the right-hander hasn't made as much progress in his recovery as the team had anticipated. A better timetable for his return is unlikely to be revealed until he's cleared to begin a throwing program.
Jun 14, 2022
Minimum-length absence possible
Eovaldi (back) may not miss more than the minimum 15 days on the injured list, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi hit the injured list Sunday with an injury that has been referred to both as hip tightness and lower-back inflammation. The move was backdated to Thursday, leaving him eligible to return June 24, and it appears as though he has the chance to do so. Kutter Crawford entered the rotation in his absence.
Jun 12, 2022
Hits injured list
Eovaldi was placed on the 15-day injured list with lower back inflammation Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi had been dealing with what was reportedly hip tightness since his last start Wednesday against the Angels, though the issue is evidently in his back, not his hip. Reports from Saturday indicated that the righty may only need his next start pushed back by a day or two, but he'll now have to miss at least two turns in the rotation. The transaction was backdated to Thursday, so he'll be eligible to return June 24, but it's not yet clear if a minimum-length stay is in play. Kutter Crawford was recalled to take his place on the roster and will start Sunday against Seattle.

Next start pushed back
Eovaldi (hip) won't start Tuesday against Oakland as previously scheduled, but there's a chance he starts as soon as Wednesday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox previously maintained that Eovaldi would make his next start on schedule despite the fact that he returned to Boston to have his right hip checked out, but that's evidently no longer the case. The fact that a Wednesday start is still in play suggests that the team still isn't particularly worried, though a decision on when he'll next take the mound won't come until Monday's off day. Nick Pivetta will jump ahead of him to start Tuesday's series opener.

Returns to Boston
Eovaldi returned to Boston to have his hip checked out, though manager Alex Cora insists the right-hander will make his next start Tuesday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi is dealing with right hip tightness that likely caused a drop in velocity during his most recent start against the Angels on Wednesday. "We flew him there just to see our doctors," manager Alex Cora said. "He's still expected to make his next start on Tuesday." Cora has acted like the hip is not a big deal, but it apparently remains a concern heading into Evoladi's start Tuesday against the Athletics at Fenway Park.
Jun 10, 2022
Will make next scheduled start
Eovaldi (hip) will make his next start, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. He's tentatively slated to start Tuesday at home against Oakland.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi experienced hip tightness during his previous and was pulled after five innings. Boston manager Alex Cora expressed little concern following the game but acknowledged the condition may have played a role in his reduced velocity. "He's doing OK," Cora said. "Obviously it wasn't perfect yesterday. Plaw (Kevin Plawecki) noticed it right away with the velo. So he had to actually quote-unquote pitch. It wasn't the usual 98, 99. So he used his secondary pitches and we expect him to make his next start." The Red Sox have a day off Monday, which builds an extra day of rest into Eovaldi's schedule.

Dealing with hip tightness
Eovaldi was dealing with hip tightness during Wednesday's start against the Angels, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It's unclear when Eovaldi starting feeling the sensation -- prior to or during the start -- and it may have impacted his four-seamer, which average a below-normal 94 mph. He averaged 96.7 mph over his first 11 starts. "Yeah, probably that's it," manager Alex Cora said. "He pitched well. He got us 5 scoreless innings. The stuff wasn't great but he did a good job changing speeds, using his offspeed pitches." Cora added that he doesn't think Eovaldi will miss his next start while noting the pitcher will have an additional day off when Boston if off Monday.

Hurls five scoreless frames in win
Eovaldi (4-2) earned the win over the Angels on Wednesday, pitching five scoreless innings during which he allowed six hits while striking out five.
ANALYSIS
The Angels put at least one runner on base in four of the Eovaldi's five innings, but they didn't manage any extra-base hits and weren't able to get any runners to third base. The right-hander was fairly inefficient with 84 pitches over five frames, but he didn't walk any batters and racked up 14 swinging strikes. Eovaldi lowered his season ERA to 3.16 with the strong outing, and he has pitched 11 scoreless innings while notching 13 strikeouts and a pair of wins over his past two starts.
Jun 4, 2022
Fans eight in six innings
Eovaldi (3-2) earned the win during Friday's 7-2 victory over Oakland, allowing four hits and one walk with six strikeouts in six innings.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was staked to an early lead and was never in any real danger, recording only his second start of at least five innings while surrendering two runs or fewer. The 32-year-old fired 62 of 93 pitches for strikes with 16 of the swinging variety and now sports a 3.41 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 11 turns. He's set to take the hill again next week against the Angels.
May 28, 2022
Complete game win over Orioles
Eovaldi (2-2) earned the win after he pitched a complete game Saturday, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out six versus the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi surrendered a run in the first frame before later giving up two more in the fifth on a Robinson Chirinos homer, one of which was unearned. The outing was his longest of the season and he has now posted two consecutive strong starts after he surrendered nine runs (six earned) over 1.2 innings against the Astros on May 17. Over his last two outings, the 32-year-old notched back-to-back quality starts while posting a 2.30 ERA with 18 punchouts over 15.2 frames in those contests. Eovaldi tentatively lines up to take on the Athletics on Friday.
May 22, 2022
Strikes out 11 in no-decision
Eovaldi allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out 11 in 6.2 innings during Sunday's win over the Mariners. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Although Eovaldi gave up a two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning Sunday, he logged a season-high 11 strikeouts and was in line for the win when he exited the matchup. However, he was forced to settle for the no-decision since the Mariners tied the game in the top of the ninth inning. Although Eovaldi was unable to pick up the win Sunday, it was encouraging to see him bounce back after he gave up nine runs (six earned) in 1.2 innings during his last start. The right-hander projects to make his next start at home against the Orioles on Saturday as part of a doubleheader.
May 18, 2022
Second inning meltdown
Eovaldi (1-2) took the loss during Tuesday's 13-4 defeat at the hands of the Astros, allowing nine runs (six earned) on eight hits in 1.2 innings. He failed to record a strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi recorded a five-pitch first inning, but it was all downhill from there as he surrendered five home runs before being pulled while only recording two outs in the second. This was the 32-year-old's first time allowing more than three runs in eight turns and his ERA jumped more than a full run to 4.32. He'll look to get back on track this weekend with another start against Seattle on the docket.
May 12, 2022
Strikes out six in no decision
Eovaldi gave up three runs on six hits across 6.1 innings during Wednesday's 5-3 loss to the Braves. He struck out six and walked one.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi cruised through the first two innings, but got into trouble in the third when Orlando Arcia singled to center. Travis Demeritte followed the single with a two-run shot, and two batters later Matt Olson hit an RBI-double to center, tying the game at three. Eovaldi was able to settle down after the shaky third, but he was pulled in the seventh inning with 98 pitches after giving up another single to Arica. The veteran sports a 3.15 ERA with a 42:7 K:BB across 40.0 innings, but he's allowed at least one home run in all but one start this season, including multiple homers three times. Tentatively, he's scheduled to pitch against the Astros on Tuesday.
May 6, 2022
Middling performance Friday
Eovaldi (1-1) gave up three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four over five innings Friday against the White Sox. He took the loss.
ANALYSIS
Jose Abreu had a sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning and Luis Robert hit a towering two-run homer in the third, which accounted for all the damage on Eovaldi. He has already given up eight home runs in 33.2 innings this season, which is the one big knock on Eovaldi's otherwise stellar season. Tentatively, he lines up to start next weekend in Texas.
May 1, 2022
Shines with seven scoreless frames
Eovaldi did not factor in the decision against Baltimore on Saturday despite tossing seven scoreless innings during which he allowed three hits and no walks while striking out eight.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi held the Orioles without a hit for 5.2 frames and left with a 1-0 lead after seven standout innings, but the Boston offense generated only one run and its bullpen couldn't hold the lead for the right-hander. Still, this was another impressive performance for Eovaldi, who racked up 16 swinging strikes and notched his second consecutive quality start. He'll carry a 2.51 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 32:3 K:BB into his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home against the White Sox on Friday.
Apr 26, 2022
Settles for no-decision Monday
Eovaldi didn't factor into the decision in Monday's 6-2 loss to the Blue Jays, allowing two runs on five hits over seven innings. He struck out five without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander tossed an efficient 72 pitches (56 strikes) before exiting, but Eovaldi served up solo homers to Lourdes Gurriel and Matt Chapman and was headed for his first loss of the season until the Red Sox tied it up in the eighth inning. Eovaldi will carry a 3.32 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and sharp 24:3 K:BB through 21.2 innings into his next outing, but he's already given up seven long balls on the season.
Apr 19, 2022
Pulled in fifth inning
Eovaldi surrendered one run on seven hits and one walk while striking out six over 4.2 innings in Tuesday's win over the Blue Jays. He did not factor into the game's decision.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi struggled to keep the Blue Jays off the bases in this one, allowing eight men to reach before being yanked with two outs in the fifth inning. Ultimately, he was able to tightrope out of a lot of trouble, surrendering just one run on a Zack Collins solo homer in the top of the second frame. All together, Eovaldi has produced a 3.78 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over three starts this season. He'll look to get his first win of the 2022 campaign when he takes on the Rays on Sunday in his next expected start.
Apr 13, 2022
Earns first win
Eovaldi (1-0) allowed two earned runs on four hits and one walk while striking out six across five innings to earn the win Wednesday against the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi surrendered a pair of solo home runs -- one in the opening inning and the other in the fifth -- but otherwise limited the Detroit offense. The Tigers did make him work, however, as they fouled off 32 of Eovaldi's offerings and ran his pitch count to 101 across his five frames of work. Eovaldi has worked five innings in each of his first two starts and has posted a 13:2 K:BB in that span, however he's also surrendered four long balls.
Apr 8, 2022
Whiffs seven in season opener
Eovaldi allowed three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out seven in five innings during Friday's loss to the Yankees. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Boston's offense provided Eovaldi with a three-run lead in the top of the first inning Friday, but he gave up a two-run blast in the bottom half of the frame before Giancarlo Stanton tied the game with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth. Although the right-hander was forced to settle for a no-decision, he had strong strikeout numbers while reaching 76 pitches in the Opening Day start. He tentatively lines up to start Wednesday's road matchup against the Tigers.
Apr 6, 2022
Red Sox-Yankees opener postponed
Eovaldi and the Red Sox won't face the Yankees on Thursday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
The season opener will be postponed to Friday, which was initially an open date for both teams. The Red Sox still plan to hand Eovaldi the Opening Day nod and keep the rest of their rotation in order.
Apr 3, 2022
Starting Opening Day
Eovaldi was announced as the Red Sox' Opening Day starter for the April 7 game against the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Chris Sale (ribs) is unavailable to begin the season, so it's no surprise Eovaldi will take the mound Opening Day for Boston. The right-hander has a 3.75 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 195:35 K:BB across 182.1 innings last season, which was only the second time in his MLB career he's topped 160 innings.
Mar 24, 2022
Up to four innings
Eovaldi did not allow hit or walk while striking out six over four scoreless innings in Wednesday's spring training game against Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi increased his innings count in what was a dominant Grapefruit League performance against several Twins regulars. He was dominant for two innings of his first spring start before tiring in the third. There's time remaining for two more starts, so Eovaldi should be ready for five or six innings on Opening Day. Over seven spring innings, the right-hander has allowed two runs on three hits with nine strikeouts and zero walks.
Mar 18, 2022
Works three innings Friday
Eovaldi allowed two runs on three hits while striking out three and walking none over three innings Friday spring training game against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was dominant over the first two before getting fatigued in the third. There's time left in camp for Evoladi to get three more starts before taking the ball Opening Day in Yankee Stadium on Apr. 7; however, manager Alex Cora said he was not locked in to giving his starters four spring starts. "We have to be careful. We'll see how he feels after this one and then we'll reassess what we have to do," Cora said. Whether the righty makes two or three more starts, Eovaldi should be around the five-inning mark by the regular season.
Mar 16, 2022
Named Opening Day starter
Manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Eovaldi will draw the Opening Day start against the Yankees on April 7, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox announced Wednesday that Chris Sale (ribs) will miss the start of the regular season, so Eovaldi will be tabbed for the Opening Day start at Yankee Stadium. The right-hander made 32 starts for Boston last year and posted a 3.75 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 182.1 innings, and he's slated to make his first spring start of 2022 against the Rays on Friday.
Mar 15, 2022
Tapped for Friday start
Eovaldi will start Friday's spring training game against the Rays, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Boston kicks off its Grapefruit League schedule Thursday, a traditional affair with the Twins, but manager Alex Cora might deploy exclusively minor leaguers for that game. Eovaldi geared up for the assignment by throwing live batting practice Tuesday. The right-hander, who 11-9 with a 3.75 ERA and 1.19 WHIP, is expected to be the No. 2 starter behind Chris Sale. Eovaldi will be followed in the spring rotation by Nick Pivetta, who will start Saturday against the Twins.
Oct 23, 2021
Fans four in loss
Eovaldi (1-2) allowed one run on five hits and a walk while striking out four in 4.1 innings to take the loss against the Astros on Friday in Game 6 of the ALCS.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was relatively effective at holding the Astros in check to begin Friday's matchup, with the only run he allowed coming via a double in the bottom of the first inning. However, the Red Sox only mustered two hits during the game, forcing the right-hander to settle for the loss. The 31-year-old made five appearances (four starts) during the postseason and recorded a 4.79 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 20.2 innings.
Oct 20, 2021
Still available for Game 6
Manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Eovaldi is still available to pitch in Game 6 of the ALCS against the Astros on Friday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi threw 24 pitches as a reliever in Tuesday's Game 4 loss. However, he tentatively lines up to make his fourth postseason start on the road in Game 6 on Friday and seems to have a good chance to take the mound to begin the game.
Oct 20, 2021
Takes loss in Game 4
Eovaldi (1-1) allowed four runs on two hits and two walks while striking out two in two-thirds of an inning to take the loss against the Astros in Game 4 of the ALCS on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi made his first relief appearance of the postseason after starting in each of his first three outings, but he was roughed up in the top of the ninth inning. It's not clear whether the right-hander will be able to start one of the final two games of the ALCS after he tossed 24 pitches in Tuesday's contest.
Oct 16, 2021
Does enough for win
Eovaldi picked up the win in Game 2 of the ALCS against the Astros on Saturday, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk over 5.1 innings of work while striking out three batters.
ANALYSIS
It wasn't the most dominant performance of the postseason for Eovaldi, who came into the day with a 2.61 ERA and a 16:1 K:BB through his first two playoff starts. It didn't have to be, however, as the Red Sox hit one grand slam in the top of the first and another in the top of the second. Eovaldi only allowed a single baserunner through his first three innings before getting scored on three times in his fourth frame, but he had a nine-run cushion to work with at that point. He'll be on schedule to start Game 6 next Friday but could potentially be used in relief before then if necessary.
Oct 14, 2021
Starting Game 2
Eovaldi will start Game 2 of the ALCS against the Astros on Saturday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi will make his third start of the postseason after he recorded a 2.61 ERA and 0.77 WHIP in 10.1 innings across his first two outings. Chris Sale will take the mound for the series opener.
Oct 6, 2021
Lasts 5.1 innings against Yankees
Eovaldi (1-0) allowed one run on four hits and no walks while striking out eight in 5.1 innings to earn the win over the Yankees in Tuesday's AL Wild Card Game.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi tossed six scoreless innings in his final regular-season start of the 2021 campaign, and he maintained his success in his first postseason outing of the year. The righty exited the contest after he gave up a solo home run to Anthony Rizzo with one out in the sixth inning, but Eovaldi is a strong candidate to make a start in the upcoming ALDS against the Rays.
Oct 3, 2021
Named wild-card starter
Eovaldi will start Tuesday's AL Wild Card Game against the Yankees, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi delivered six scoreless innings to earn the win against the Orioles on Wednesday, and he'll take the mound in Tuesday's winner-take-all game. The right-hander made 14 starts after the All-Star break and posted a 3.87 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 79 innings during that time.
Sep 29, 2021
Excellent in win
Eovaldi (11-9) pitched six shutout innings, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out seven to earn the win Wednesday over Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander bounced back from a nightmarish start against the Yankees last Friday, keeping runs off the board for the fifth time in 32 starts this year. Eovaldi's strong performance bolsters Boston's hopes of a wild-card spot. He's pitched to a 3.75 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 195:35 K:BB in 182.1 innings overall. Eovaldi is not expected to make another start in the regular season, but he could be a starting option if Boston is forced to play a tiebreaking Game 163.
Sep 25, 2021
Hammered by Yankees
Eovaldi (10-9) took the loss Friday as the Red Sox were downed 8-3 by the Yankees, surrendering seven runs on seven hits and two walks over 2.2 innings. He failed to strike out a batter.
ANALYSIS
With Boston fighting to hang onto a wild-card spot, the right-hander picked a bad time to deliver his worst start of the season. Eovaldi tossed 37 of 59 pitches for strikes, with a three-run blast by Giancarlo Stanton in the third inning being the biggest blow against him. Eovaldi will take a 3.88 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 188:34 K:BB through 176.1 innings into what is likely to be his final start of the regular season next week in Baltimore.
Sep 19, 2021
Fans eight in no-decision
Eovaldi allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings in Sunday's win over the Orioles. He struck out eight and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
All three runs allowed by Eovaldi came during the third inning, including a two-run single by Austin Hays. He was in line for his 11th win of the season before Boston's bullpen ran into some trouble in the seventh inning. The 31-year-old righty has recorded a 2.27 ERA with a 48:6 K:BB over his last six starts but he hasn't earned a win since Aug. 11. Eovaldi will carry a 3.58 ERA into his projected home start against the Yankees next weekend.
Sep 15, 2021
Five strong innings
Eovaldi got a no-decision in an 8-4 win over Seattle on Tuesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in five innings.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi brought his typical quality stuff Tuesday aside from a fourth inning that saw him permit both runs charged to his ledger. The nine strikeouts are one off his season high and the 31-year-old has now recorded at least eight strikeouts in each of his last three games. Dating back to his start on Aug. 11, Eovaldi has 1.90 ERA in 44.2 innings across eight starts.
Sep 8, 2021
Whiffs eight in no-decision
Eovaldi pitched seven scoreless innings in a no-decision against Tampa Bay on Wednesday, giving up three hits and two walks while striking out eight.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi logged his second straight quality start, limiting the Rays to a trio of singles. The 31-year-old has now piled up 163.2 innings on the year, his most since amassing a career-high 199.2 with Miami in 2014. Eovaldi will take a 10-8 record, 3.57 ERA and career-high 171 strikeouts into his next scheduled start on the road at Seattle.
Sep 3, 2021
Turns in quality start
Eovaldi allowed three runs on six hits and two walks with nine strikeouts in 6.1 innings versus Cleveland on Friday. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander gave up a pair of home runs in the contest -- a solo shot to Jose Ramirez and a two-run blast to Austin Hedges in the seventh. Eovaldi has allowed multiple homers in three starts this year, all of which have been in his last seven turns through the rotation. Despite the trouble with the long ball, it was a solid start for the 31-year-old, who now has a 3.73 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 163:28 K:BB through 156.2 innings. He lines up for a home start versus Tampa Bay next week.
Aug 28, 2021
Fans seven in no-decision
Eovaldi didn't factor into the decision Saturday against Cleveland after tossing 5.1 innings of two-run ball, allowing six hits while fanning seven.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi ended just two outs away from recording a quality start, but he limited the damage to just two second-inning runs -- including a solo shot from Franmil Reyes -- while fanning seven for the second straight outings. The veteran has struck out at least six while allowing two or fewer runs in each of his last four starts. He owns a 3.71 ERA through 150.1 innings on the year.
Aug 23, 2021
Dominant in no-decision Monday
Eovaldi didn't factor into the decision in Monday's 8-4 extra-innings win over the Rangers, allowing only one unearned run on four hits over seven innings. He struck out seven without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander was locked in, firing 69 of 94 pitches for strikes, but Eovaldi got denied his 11th win of the season when Matt Barnes blew the save in the ninth inning. Eovaldi is up to 10 quality starts on the year, and he'll take a 3.72 ERA and 147:26 K:BB through 145 innings into his next outing.
Aug 22, 2021
Rangers-Red Sox postponed
Eovaldi and the Red Sox won't face the Rangers on Sunday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
With Hurricane Henri expected to make landfall in Long Island or Southern New England on Sunday, the Red Sox opted to postpone the contest out of an abundance of caution. The two teams are scheduled to make up the game Monday at 1:10 p.m. ET, weather permitting. Eovaldi, who was scheduled to start Sunday, will presumably be pushed back one day in the pitching schedule to take the hill for Boston in the series finale.
Aug 18, 2021
Tough loss Tuesday
Eovaldi (10-8) took the loss in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Yankees, giving up two runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings as the Red Sox were downed 2-0. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander pitched well, firing 57 of 83 pitches for strikes, but Boston's bats couldn't solve rookie Luis Gil. Eovaldi once again couldn't keep the ball in the park, as both Yankees runs scored on solo shots by Luke Voit and Giancarlo Stanton, and he's served up six homers over his last four starts -- a stretch during which Eovaldi has a 6.14 ERA despite a 26:5 K:BB through 22 innings.
Aug 12, 2021
Earns 10th win
Eovaldi (10-7) allowed one earned run on three hits and one walk while striking out 10 across seven innings to earn the win Wednesday against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi got tremendous run support to cruise to his 10th win, as the Red Sox had put up 14 runs by the end of the fifth inning. He didn't need much help, however, as he managed double-digit strikeouts for the first time since April 19 and the second time this season. The only earned run Eovaldi allowed came on a solo home run from Brandon Lowe. It was a needed bounceback effort for Eovaldi, as he entered the game having allowed 12 earned runs across his last 10 innings of work. The effort lowered his ERA to 3.92 across 133 frames this season.
Aug 7, 2021
Jolted by Jays
Eovaldi (9-7) took the loss Friday as the Red Sox were routed 12-4 by the Blue Jays, surrendering seven runs on eight hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander seemed to be in firm control as he blanked Toronto through four frames, but everything fell apart for Boston in the fifth as the Jays sent 14 men to the plate and scored nine runs. Eovaldi has been tagged for at least five runs in three of his last five starts, saddling him with a 5.09 ERA since the beginning of July despite a strong 1.19 WHIP and 40:5 K:BB through 35.1 innings over that stretch.
Aug 1, 2021
Stung by Rays
Eovaldi (9-6) took the loss Saturday, coughing up six runs (five earned) on six hits and a walk over 5.1 innings as the Red Sox fell 9-5 to the Rays. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Four of the six hits off Eovaldi went for extra bases, including two-run homers by Ji-Man Choi and Francisco Mejia -- the first time all season he's served up multiple home runs in a game. The right-hander tossed 105 pitches (69 strikes) before exiting, and he'll take a 3.71 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 120:22 K:BB through 121.1 innings into his next outing.
Jul 24, 2021
Excellent outing wasted
Eovaldi allowed two earned runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out eight across 7.2 innings Saturday against the Yankees. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi held the Yankees scoreless through seven innings. He ran into trouble in the eighth, allowing a leadoff double prior to a run-scoring single. When he exited the contest, he had 3-1 lead, though the bullpen blew his lead and the game by allowing three additional runs to cross the plate in the frame. Despite losing the opportunity for a win, Eovaldi was excellent and racked up 22 called strikes and 14 swinging strikes on 100 total pitches. In his last 10 starts, Eovaldi has allowed two earned runs or fewer on seven occasions -- six of which he allowed one or no earned runs. For the season, he's maintained a 3.49 ERA with 114 strikeouts across 116 innings.
Jul 18, 2021
Fans seven in no-decision
Eovaldi allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out seven over five innings in a no-decision against the Yankees on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi had thrown 94 pitches and was removed with the score tied, 1-1, to start the sixth, when the Yankees hit back-to-back home runs off reliever Hirokazu Sawamura. A significant rain that started in the fifth inning continued to fall hard, and the game was called after six. The Red Sox will introduce a sixth starter Wednesday -- the recently called up Tanner Houck -- which is expected to push Eovaldi's next start to Friday at home against the Yankees.

Struggles despite nine Ks
Eovaldi (9-5) took the loss Tuesday as the Red Sox fell 5-3 to the Angels, giving up five runs on nine hits and a walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out nine.
ANALYSIS
The nine whiffs were his highest total since April 19, but Eovaldi was getting too much of the plate all night as six of the Angels' nine hits went for extra bases. Unless the Red Sox shuffle around their rotation, the right-hander will take a 3.66 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 99:20 K:BB through 103.1 innings into the All-Star break.
Jul 1, 2021
Seven strong innings
Eovaldi (9-4) allowed five hits and no walks while striking out six across seven scoreless innings to earn the win Thursday against the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi rolled through the Royals and allowed only one hit to the last 14 batters he faced. Though he didn't rack up strikeouts, he worked efficiently and has now thrown seven or more innings in each of his last two starts. While he has allowed four or more earned runs in five of his 17 outings this season, Eovaldi still maintains a 3.41 ERA while striking out 90 batters across 97.2 frames on the campaign.

Stellar in win Saturday
Eovaldi (8-4) allowed one earned run on seven hits while striking out six across 7.2 innings, earning the win over the Yankees on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi shutout the Yankees through 7.2 innings before surrendering a solo home run to DJ LeMahieu. He earned the victory in what ended up being his longest start of the season. It was a nice comeback after being pulled in his last outing against the Royals with just four innings pitched. The 31-year-old has a 3.67 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and a 8.3 K/9 in 90.2 innings. Although he isn't a high-strikeout pitcher, Eovaldi is tied for seventh in the American league in total innings pitched, proving to be reliable and consistent throughout the season.
Jun 20, 2021
Only lasts four innings
Eovaldi (7-4) was tagged with the loss Sunday against the Royals after allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk while fanning four across four innings.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi has been up and down of late and while he's allowed four or more runs in two of his last three starts, those are the only two times he's given up more than two runs across his last six showings. Regardless of a few inconsistent outings, the right-hander owns a 3.90 ERA across 15 starts this season and should make his next appearance against the Yankees at home next week.
Jun 14, 2021
Strong showing vs. Toronto
Eovaldi allowed three hits and one walk while striking out four across 6.2 innings Monday against the Blue Jays. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was dominant in this one and would have come away with the victory had the Red Sox not surrendered a 1-0 lead in the top of the ninth. Boston was ultimately able to win the contest in the bottom half of the frame, however. Eovaldi was coming off a tough showing his last time out, as he was tagged for five runs on 11 hits and three walks against Houston, but he's been rock solid of late despite this outlier, giving up two runs or fewer in four of his last five starts.
Jun 9, 2021
Rough outing versus Houston
Eovaldi (7-3) took the loss Wednesday. He allowed five runs on 11 hits and three walks while striking out five in 5.2 innings versus Houston.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi struggled in a four-run third inning, and that was enough to give him his first loss since April 24. The 31-year-old gave up a solo home run to Jose Altuve -- it was just the third long ball he's allowed all year, but all of those have come in his last four starts. The poor outing inflated Eovaldi's ERA to 4.11 with a 1.29 WHIP and 70:17 K:BB across 72.1 innings this season. The right-hander projects to make his next start versus Toronto.

Picks up third straight win
Eovaldi (7-2) allowed two runs (one earned) on eight hits and no walks while striking out seven in six innings to earn the win against the Yankees on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi has now picked up wins in each of his last three outings, and he helped lead the Red Sox to an elusive win at Yankee Stadium on Friday. He allowed plenty of baserunners in Friday's matchup, but he was able to hold the Yankees in check on the scoreboard. Across his last three starts, the right-hander has allowed four runs (three earned) on 17 hits and three walks while striking out 18 in 16.2 innings. He tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Astros on Wednesday.
May 29, 2021
Fans seven in win
Eovaldi (6-2) picked up the win in Saturday's 3-1 victory over the Marlins, allowing four hits and a walk over 5.1 scoreless innings while striking out seven.
ANALYSIS
It wasn't the most efficient outing, as Eovaldi fired 101 pitches (71 strikes) and still fell short of a quality start, but the right-hander held the Miami offense firmly in check while he was on the mound. Eovaldi will take a 4.01 ERA and 58:14 K:BB through 60.2 innings into his next outing.
May 23, 2021
Picks up fifth win
Eovaldi (5-2) earned the win over Philadelphia on Saturday, hurling 5.1 innings and allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander didn't dominate -- he induced only nine swinging strikes and gave up three extra-base hits -- but he did enough to keep the Phillies mostly at bay and secure his fifth win of the campaign. Eovaldi has alternated good and bad starts of late, allowing two or fewer runs three times in his past six outings but yielding 15 combined earned runs across 14.1 frames over the other three appearances. He's tentatively projected to make his next start at home against Miami next Saturday.
May 17, 2021
Allows four runs in no-decision
Eovaldi allowed four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out six in five innings in Sunday's loss to the Angels. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was hit hard in the second inning of Sunday's matchup, but he was still in line for the win when he left the game after the fifth inning. However, Matt Barnes gave up a two-run homer in the ninth inning that forced Eovaldi to settle for a no-decision. Eovaldi has now posted a 4.50 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 50 innings this season. The right-hander tentatively lines up to start on the road against Philadelphia on Saturday.
May 12, 2021
Quality start in no-decision
Eovaldi didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the A's, giving up one run on two hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander tossed 102 pitches (65 strikes) while delivering his third quality start of the season, exiting the game with the score tied 1-1. Eovaldi will carry a 4.20 ERA and 41:10 K:BB through 45 innings into his next outing, as he looks to last at least six innings in consecutive starts for the first time all year.
May 6, 2021
Struggles in no-decision
Eovaldi allowed six runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out five over 4.1 innings in a victory over Detroit on Thursday. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Facing the Tigers for the first time since 2015, Eovaldi just couldn't find a way to silence their bats. The 31-year-old gave-up a season-worst six runs during his shortest start of the year. It was the first time this year Eovaldi was unable to pitch at least five innings. Luckily, his teammates made up for it offensively, racking up 12 runs en route to the win. The right-hander will bring a 4.62 ERA and 1.23 WHIP into his next projected start Tuesday against Oakland.
May 1, 2021
Cruises to fourth win
Eovaldi (4-2) allowed one run on four hits and two walks over six frames Friday, striking out five and earning a win over the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi didn't have too much pressure on him Friday as he took the mound in the first inning with a 4-0 lead already in place. Brock Holt drove in a run with an RBI single in the second but the Rangers only put one baserunner in scoring position after that. He lowered his season ERA to 3.63 through 34.2 innings this season. Eovaldi is slated to face Detroit at home next week.
Apr 24, 2021
Struggles against Seattle
Eovaldi (3-2) picked up the loss Saturday against Seattle, giving up five runs (four earned) in five innings, striking out three while walking one and allowing seven hits.
ANALYSIS
The Mariners jumped on Eovaldi early and often. Four runners reached base in the first inning on three singles and a hit by pitch, with Eovaldi lucky to escape with just one run on the board. He gave up three more in the second thanks for a Kyle Seager triple and a wild pitch, with one more run scoring on an error in the fifth. Eovaldi's first four outings were strong enough that he still owns a 3.77 ERA on the year.
Apr 19, 2021
Picks up another win
Eovaldi (3-1) secured the win after allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out 10 across 6.1 innings Monday against the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi gave up the first run of the contest in the top of the first inning on a double to left, but the Red Sox would respond with six runs in the bottom half of the frame. The right-hander pounded the strike zone in his afternoon outing, firing 75 of 100 pitches for strikes. He would later exit with a 10-4 lead. Through four starts in 2021, he owns a 3.04 ERA and 1.06 WHIP with a 24:4 K:BB across 23.2 innings. Eovaldi's next start lines up for Saturday against Seattle.
Apr 14, 2021
Excellent outing once again
Eovaldi (2-1) allowed two runs on five hits while striking out five across five innings in Wednesday's win against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi had allowed just one run in each of his first two starts of the season, and while he was unable to keep that streak going, he still limited the damage to just two runs and five baserunners before departing the contest. Eovaldi now owns a 2.08 ERA across his first 17 innings and will look to keep this strong nun going in his next scheduled start at home against the White Sox on April 19.
Apr 7, 2021
Records first win of season
Eovaldi (1-1) earned the win Wednesday against the Rays, giving up one run on three hits and three walks while fanning seven across seven innings.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi allowed just one run across 5.1 innings in his season debut last week, and he delivered another strong performance this time around -- but now he managed to earn the win while going deep into the game and qualifying for a quality start. Eovaldi has now allowed only one run in each of his first two starts of the campaign and will look to keep the run going in his next scheduled turn in the rotation, set for April 13 on the road against the Twins.
Apr 2, 2021
Solid in Friday's loss
Eovaldi (0-1) took the loss Friday as the Red Sox fell 3-0 to the Orioles, giving up one run on four hits and a walk over 5.1 innings while striking out four.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander engaged in a pitchers' duel with John Means and exited the game in the sixth inning with the score still 0-0, but Eovaldi got saddled with the loss when Matt Andriese allowed his inherited runner to score. Eovaldi is coming off a strong 2020, posting career highs in strikeout and walks rates, and despite the disappointing result Friday he was able to pick up where he left off. He's lined up to face the Rays at home Wednesday for his next start.

Red Sox-Orioles rained out
Eovaldi and the Red Sox won't play the Orioles on Thursday after their Opening Day game was postponed due to rain, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The two teams are now scheduled to play their season opener Friday at 2:10 p.m. ET, with Thursday's game likely to be made up at a later date. Eovaldi and the other members of the Red Sox's Opening Day rotation will presumably all be pushed back a day in the pitching schedule.
Mar 26, 2021
Starting Opening Day
Manager Alex Cora named Eovaldi the starter for Opening Day against the Orioles on April 1, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Eduardo Rodriguez was previously named the started for the season opener, but his start to the season has been pushed back while experiencing dead arm. Eovaldi will instead receive the Opening Day nod rather than starting the second game of the season Saturday as previously expected. The 31-year-old is coming off a strong 2020 campaign in which he posted a 3.72 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 52:7 K:BB over 48.1 innings.
Mar 15, 2021
Falls apart in fourth inning
Eovaldi allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out three over four innings in Sunday's spring game against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was largely unscathed through the first three innings, executing the game plan of pounding the zone, but it came unglued in the fourth when he allowed three runs and five hits. "He was good, pounding the strike zone," manager Alex Cora told Ian Browne of MLB.com. "Home run, [Buxton] hit the ball hard, [Miguel] Sano on the breaking ball, but besides that, obviously we don't like the hits, but it's weak contact and the more he pounds the strike zone with his stuff, he's going to be successful and we like that." Eovaldi threw 64 pitches (51 strikes) and 10 of them lit up 100 MPH on the radar gun. He'll get two more starts before the end of camp and is on schedule to start the second game of the regular season.
Mar 10, 2021
Throws sim game
Eovaldi pitched a three-inning simulated game Tuesday, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports. He allowed a run on two hits and a walk while striking out four.
ANALYSIS
Abraham believes Evoladi was squeezed on one call, which could have turned one of the walks into a strikeout. Evoladi had been scheduled to start Saturday, but it was pushed back due to personal reasons. This outing serves as his second spring start.
Mar 6, 2021
Next start pushed back
Eovaldi, who had been scheduled to start Saturday, is having his next spring start pushed back to Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Boston manager Alex Cora was quick to point out this is not due to injury, but rather it was because Eovaldi missed a day or preparation for personal reasons, and the club wants to proceed with an overabundance of caution. Tuesday's start will be Eovladi's second Grapefruit League outing.
Mar 1, 2021
Brings midseason heat
Eovaldi allowed two runs on two hits and one walk while striking two on over 1.1 innings in Sunday's spring game against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi told Christopher Smith of MassLive.com that it felt like he was rushing his delivery and his offspeed stuff wasn't very good. He was pleased with the fastball which averaged 97.9 MPH and topped out at 99.5.
Feb 26, 2021
Starting spring opener
Eovaldi will start the Red Sox's spring opener against the Twins on Sunday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi is slightly ahead of other starters in terms of progression. While Eovladi kicks off the spring season, Eduardo Rodriguez is expected to be Boston's Opening Day starter.
Feb 20, 2021
Optimistic about health
Eovaldi threw his first live batting practice of spring training and is at full health, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi noted after the session that his arm felt fresh and said the decreased workload of the 2020 season could benefit his potential to stay healthy in 2021. In eight full seasons in the majors, Eovaldi has topped 150 innings only twice. In nine starts last year, he posted a solid 3.72 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with a 52:7 K:BB across 48.1 frames.
Sep 23, 2020
Tosses six shutout innings
Eovaldi (4-2) pitched six shutout innings, allowing seven hits and a walk while striking out eight in a win over the Orioles on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was locked in during this start, and the Red Sox offense gave him plenty of breathing room. The right-hander didn't allow a run over his last 11 innings this season. He finishes the season with a 3.72 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 52:7 K:BB across 48.1 innings.
Sep 17, 2020
Picks up third win
Eovaldi (3-2) secured the win after allowing two hits and striking out seven over five scoreless innings Thursday against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi displayed excellent command in this one, firing first-pitch strikes to 13 of the 19 batters he faced. The Red Sox scored two runs in the top of the sixth, putting Eovaldi in line for the victory. The right-hander has looked sharp over his last three outings, surrendering just two runs on eight hits while fanning 17 over 15 innings.
Sep 13, 2020
Overcomes hiccup in no-decision
Eovaldi allowed a leadoff home run in a no-decision against the Rays on Saturday. He gave up one run on three hits while striking out four over three innings.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi hadn't pitched in 22 days, so it was natural to wonder if he would be rusty. That appeared to be the case when the first batter faced, Austin Meadows, took him deep. Eovaldi settled in after that and will get two more starts over the last 13 games to build momentum toward 2021. His next start comes Friday at home against the Yankees.
Sep 12, 2020
Returns from injured list
Eovaldi (calf) was activated from the injured list as expected Saturday ahead of his scheduled start against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi hasn't pitched in over three weeks with a strained right calf. He's trimmed his ERA by over a run this season, though it still sits at an unimpressive 4.98. Matt Hall was optioned in a corresponding move.
Sep 11, 2020
Rejoining rotation Saturday
Eovaldi (calf) will be activated off the 10-day injured list to start Saturday at Tampa Bay, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander will end up missing just under two weeks with the mild calf strain. Eovaldi had his best start of the season in his previous outing with seven one-run innings, and he'll look to pick up where he left off against the Rays.
Sep 10, 2020
Throws without pain
Eovaldi (calf) threw a bullpen session Wednesday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was able to throw without feeling discomfort in his leg, putting him in line to return this weekend. The Red Sox are targeting a start Saturday, though it would like be a short outing.
Sep 8, 2020
Could return with next week
Eovaldi (calf) could return this weekend in Tampa Bay or next week in Miami, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
He will throw a bullpen session in Philadelphia on Wednesday, so he could return Friday or Saturday at the earliest, or Boston could give him more time if necessary. Eovaldi has flashed brilliance this season, but only three of his six starts have been quality. His best start was his most recent start Aug. 20, when he struck out six and allowed one run over seven frames against the Orioles.
Sep 7, 2020
Throws bullpen Sunday
Eovaldi (calf) threw a bullpen session Sunday, Julian McWilliams of the Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi came out of the bullpen session feeling well and has another bullpen scheduled for Wednesday in Philadelphia during the team's off day. There's a chance he comes off the injured list for the series against the Rays that begins Thursday or the next series against the Marlins.
Sep 3, 2020
Start pending bullpen session
Eovaldi (calf) could make his next start Sunday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox had been hoping Eovaldi might start Saturday, but they pushed those plans and await his reaction to a bullpen session he was scheduled to throw Thursday. Eovaldi has not pitched since Aug. 20.
Aug 29, 2020
Heading to injured list
The Red Sox announced Saturday that they put Eovaldi (calf) on the 10-day injured list with a "very mild strain" and have activated Chris Mazza to start Sunday's game, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It was originally presumed that Eovaldi was dealing with some cramping in his right calf but it appears as though the injury is slightly more severe. He will go on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Aug. 26, meaning he can be activated as soon as Sept. 5. Manager Ron Roenicke does expect Eovaldi to return in a week's time and start upon being activated, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
Aug 28, 2020
Won't start Sunday
Eovaldi's (calf) scheduled start Sunday was pushed back, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi reportedly felt better following a recent bullpen session, but he's still dealing with some calf discomfort and won't be ready to take the mound Sunday against the Nationals. Zack Godley will start in his place. It's unclear when Eovaldi could take the mound.
Aug 28, 2020
Start pushed to Sunday
Eovaldi (calf) will start Sunday against the Nationals, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi's next turn had pushed back to Saturday because of cramping in his right calf, then Boston rejiggered its rotation following Thursday's postponement. The series against the Nationals lines up with Martin Perez throwing Friday, Chris Mazza on Saturday and Eovaldi in the series finale.
Aug 26, 2020
Slated to throw bullpen
Eovaldi (calf) will throw a bullpen session Thursday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi's scheduled start for Wednesday was pushed back due to cramping in his right calf, but he'll test things out by throwing Thursday. He'll be able to start Saturday's game against the Nationals if all goes well during his bullpen session. The right-hander has made six starts to begin the season, posting a 4.98 ERA and 33:6 K:BB over 34.1 innings.
Aug 25, 2020
Start pushed back
Eovaldi's scheduled start was pushed back to Saturday due to a calf cramp, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi was expected to toe the rubber Wednesday against the Blue Jays, but he'll be unable to do so as he nurses a calf issue. Instead, Colten Brewer will start for the Red Sox. However, if he heals well, Eovaldi should be in line to start at home Saturday against the Nationals.
Aug 21, 2020
Goes seven strong in win
Eovaldi (2-2) earned the win against Baltimore on Thursday, hurling seven innings and allowing one run on five hits and one walk while striking out six.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi picked up his first win since Opening Day -- also against the Orioles -- with the dominant performance. The right-hander threw 64 of 97 pitches for strikes while walking less than two batters for the fifth time in six starts. His lone blemish was a solo home run served up to Pat Valaika in the seventh inning. Eovaldi will carry a 4.98 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 33:6 K:BB into his next start, which is scheduled for Wednesday at Toronto.
Aug 16, 2020
Lit up by Yankees
Eovaldi (1-2) took the loss against the Yankees on Saturday, completing 5.1 innings and allowing eight runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi entered the contest with a 4.09 ERA and departed with the mark having swollen to 5.93. He was burned by three long balls in the contest, the last of which -- a three-run shot off the bat of Clint Frazier -- contributed to a four-run sixth inning that ultimately forced him from the game. The right-hander did induce 14 swinging strikes, but he managed to whiff only three batters -- a season low, and a dramatic dropoff from the 10 strikeouts he racked up in his previous outing. Eovaldi will attempt to regroup when he heads to Baltimore to take on the Orioles on Friday in his next scheduled start.
Aug 9, 2020
Fans 10 in no decision
Eovaldi allowed three earned runs on six hits and no walks while striking out 10 across six innings Sunday against the Blue Jays. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi racked up strikeouts on the strength of 19 swinging strikes on 91 total pitches. He did allow two solo home runs -- one to Bo Bichette and the other to Cavan Biggio -- to account for the majority of the damage against him. Still it was a relatively strong outing for Eovaldi, who now has an impressive 24:3 K:BB to go along with a 4.09 ERA and 1.27 WHIP across 22 innings. He's currently projected to make his next start Friday at the Yankees.
Aug 4, 2020
Falls apart late
Eovaldi (1-1) allowed four earned runs on six hits and a walk while striking out six across five innings to take the loss Tuesday against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi shut the Rays down through 3.2 innings, but allowed a walk, single, and double consecutively to account for two runs in the fourth frame. He then allowed the first three batters he faced to reach base in the fifth inning -- including a triple to Austin Meadows -- accounting for the final two runs he surrendered. More positively, Eovaldi did rack up strikeouts on the strength of 12 swinging strikes on 85 total pitches. Through three starts, Eovaldi has managed a 3.94 ERA with a 14:3 K:BB across 16 innings. He's scheduled to take the mound next Monday in a rematch against the Rays.
Jul 30, 2020
Holds up against deGrom
Eovladi picked up a no-decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out four over five innings in a 6-5 win over the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi put the Red Sox in a position to halt their four-game losing skid against Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom. Eovaldi is bearing the mantle of Boston's No. 1 starter well through the first two starts, posting a 2.45 ERA and 1.36 WHIP.
Jul 24, 2020
Cruises against Orioles
Eovaldi (1-0) earned the win during Friday's 13-2 victory over the Orioles. He tossed six innings of one-run ball, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out four.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi wasn't dominant by any means, but he shut down the Orioles while posting a quality start without a lot of effort. His next start is scheduled for July 29 at the Mets, where he is expected to face Jacob deGrom in a tougher matchup.
Jul 18, 2020
Confirmed as Opening Day starter
Eovaldi was named the Red Sox's Opening Day starter Saturday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi will be handed the relatively easy task of shutting down the Orioles' lineup next Friday and will line up to face the Mets in his next outing. He wouldn't have gotten the Opening Day nod in a typical season, but with Chris Sale recovering from Tommy John surgery and Eduardo Rodriguez only just reporting to camp Saturday after clearing COVID-19 protocols, he's the team's best available option. Eovaldi has been capable of ace-like stretches at times in his career, though his career 4.30 ERA over eight MLB seasons certainly doesn't meet that mark, and his 5.99 ERA in 67.2 innings last year was quite poor.
Jul 15, 2020
Scheduled for six innings
Eovaldi is scheduled for a six-inning stint in a scrimmage Sunday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
While manager Ron Roenicke hasn't announced Eovaldi as Boston's Opening Day starter, it's easy to see the right-hander is lining up to start the opener Friday, July 24, when the Red Sox and Orioles kick off the regular season. "I haven't said anything to him yet," Roenicke said. "That conversation will probably happen in the next day or two. But you guys can figure out the numbers there." If all starters were healthy, left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez would start the opener, but he's still under the COVID-19 protocol and time is running out for him to be ready by then.
Jul 14, 2020
Throws four more innings
Eovaldi threw 66 pitches over four innings in his latest simulated game Tuesday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander threw 44 of his 66 pitches for strikes. Four innings is the same amount he threw in his prior outing, though he may have thrown more inside (out of the view of reporters) Tuesday after his outdoor work was cut short by rain. In any case, it appears as though he'll be able to handle something close to a full workload in his first start of the year, which will likely come on against the Orioles on Opening Day due to the absences of Chris Sale (elbow) and Eduardo Rodriguez (illness).
Jul 10, 2020
Dominant outing
Eovaldi allowed one hit and one walk while striking out four over four innings in an intra-squad game Thursday,
ANALYSIS
In a continuation of a dominant spring training, when Eovaldi pitched 12 scoreless Grapefruit League innings, the right-hander master Boston's hitters during Thursday's session then followed up with a fifth inning the bullpen. He used all of his pitches Thursday, including a revamped slider, a pitch he focused on during the shutdown. Eovaldi will be an important player for the Red Sox in what will be a thin starting rotation. With Eduardo Rodriguez (illness) not yet in camp and uncertain when he'll report, Eovaldi is expected to be the Opening Day starter.
Jul 5, 2020
May get Opening Day nod
Eovaldi is slated to throw his second simulated game of summer camp Thursday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Based on the tentative throwing schedule for the Red Sox's prospective rotation candidates, Eovaldi would currently be lined up for the Opening Day nod. Coming off an injury plagued season in which he posted a 5.99 ERA and 1.58 WHIP over 67.2 innings, Eovaldi doesn't profile as an ideal No. 1 starter entering the 60-game season, but the Red Sox aren't left with many alternatives while Chris Sale (elbow) recovers from Tommy John surgery and Eduardo Rodriguez (not injury related) has yet to arrive at summer camp. Rodriguez is currently awaiting the results of a COVID-19 test and could be in danger of missing the start of the season with a positive result.
Jul 5, 2020
Impresses in sim game
Eovaldi threw three innings in a simulated game Saturday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi threw approximately 45 pitches during his first throwing session of summer camp. "The stuff was great," said Sox manager Ron Roenicke. "The cutter was good, the slider, the curveball. Threw some really good split-fingers and the velocity was there on his fastball. He got what he needed to do today. Moving forward, we're thinking his next outing will be an intrasquad game." Eovaldi continued to the good work he produced during spring training when he tossed eight scoreless innings while striking out 12 and walking one over three Grapefruit League starts. With Eduardo Rodriguez (not injury related) not yet in camp due to possible exposure to someone who tested positive for coronavirus, Eovaldi temporarily moves up a slot in the rotation.
Mar 8, 2020
Scoreless spring continues
Eovaldi allowed one hit and one walk while striking out four over three scoreless innings in Saturday's spring start against the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi came out firing, hitting 97 mph during the first inning. He navigated traffic in the first before setting the down the final seven batters. He's looked great thus far, tossing zeros and fanning 41.4 percent of batters faced through eight Grapefruit League innings.
Mar 2, 2020
Dealing in second spring start
Eovaldi allowed one hit and struck out four over three scoreless innings in Sunday's spring game against the Braves.
ANALYSIS
For the second straight start, Eovaldi was pinpoint with his command. He's allowed three hits and no walks while striking out eight over his two spring starts (five innings). It's an encouraging sign from the right-hander, from whom the Red Sox are expecting a bounce back year with Eovaldi taking the ball every fifth day. An elbow injury limited him to 67.2 innings in 2019. Other than 2014 with the Marlins when Eovaldi threw 199.2 innings, he hasn't sniffed the 200-inning mark, so the expectations are high.

Makes strong spring start
Eovaldi allowed two hits and struck out four in two innings in Monday's spring game against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Eovaldi cited the return of his splitter as the catalyst for his strong spring debut. "Yeah, I'd say my splitter for sure," Eovaldi told Ian Browne of MLB.com. "Last year it was real inconsistent. That was one of the pitches I really focused on this offseason. Make sure I got that back on track. Today they were really consistent." After an inconsistent 2019 season, during which he served some time as a reliever, Eovladi will resume his role as a full-time starter in 2020. With David Price off to Los Angeles, the Red Sox need the 2018 version of Eovaldi, a starter who helped them win the World Series.
