Brilliant in 10th win
Pivetta (10-9) earned the win Friday, allowing two hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings against the Orioles. He struck out 10.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta ended his season on a high note, notching his fourth double-digit strikeout performance of the year. The 30-year-old righty was fantastic throughout September with a 2.43 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 43:5 K:BB in 33.1 innings. Pivetta ends the year with career lows in ERA (4.04) and WHIP (1.12) with 183:50 K:BB over 142.2 innings.

Impressive in unlucky no-decision
Pivetta did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing three hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings against the White Sox. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
The White Sox mustered just three singles off Pivetta; however, Boston's offense didn't provide any run support and the 30-year-old had to settle for a no-decision. In five September appearances (four starts), he has posted a 3.08 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and an impressive 33:4 K:BB across 26.2 innings. Pivetta tentatively lines up for a road matchup with the AL East-leading Orioles in the team's final regular-season series next week.

Logs quality start
Pivetta did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits over 6.1 innings against Toronto. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
It's the first time Pivetta pitched six or more innings since July 31. Since rejoining the Red Sox rotation earlier this month, he's gone 0-2 with a 4.41 ERA and 21 strikeouts in three starts (16.1 innings). The 30-year-old Pivetta will likely finish out the season as a starter with James Paxton (knee) sidelined. He's currently slated for a homw matchup with the White Sox in his next outing.

Stuck with loss despite 10 Ks
Pivetta (9-9) took the loss Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader against the Yankees, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out 10.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander was dominant through five frames in his return to the rotation, retiring the first eight batters he faced and not allowing a runner past first base, but he faded in the sixth and got the hook after five of the first six New York batters reached base. It's the third time this season Pivetta has fanned double-digit batters but the first since July 31, as he'd spent the last month working out of the bullpen, and he earned those Ks with 31 called or swinging strikes among his 90 pitches. With James Paxton (knee) done for the year, Pivetta figures to remain a starter the rest of the way.
Sep 12, 2023
Starting Tuesday's matinee
Pivetta will start the afternoon game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was scheduled to start Tuesday, but Monday's rain forced a cancellation which will be made up Tuesday as part of a doubleheader. Monday's scheduled starter, Kutter Crawford, will work the nightcap. Pivetta has been moved into the starting rotation to replace James Paxton, who is done for the season with a knee injury.
Sep 10, 2023
Moving into rotation
Pivetta will start for the Red Sox on Tuesday against the Yankees, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta is going to operate in a rotation role over the final three weeks of the regular season after James Paxton was officially shut down Sunday due to right knee inflammation. Pivetta, 30, holds a 4.54 ERA and 150:47 K:BB through 117 innings (12 starts, 22 relief appearances) this year with Boston.
Sep 7, 2023
Gets little help in loss
Pivetta (9-8) took the loss Wednesday, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks over 4.2 innings as the Red Sox fell 3-1 to the Rays. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Making his first start since Aug. 15, Pivetta wasn't particularly efficient and got the hook after 85 pitches (58 strikes), but he also got little support from his offense. The right-hander's impressive run as a bulk reliever after the All-Star break is now well in the rearview mirror, and since the beginning of August, Pivetta has a 5.97 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 40:13 K:BB through 28.2 innings. He should return to a long relief role after this spot start.
Sep 5, 2023
Starting Wednesday
Pivetta will start Wednesday's game against the Rays, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
After picking up a three-inning save Saturday, Pivetta is now set to make his 12th start of the season. The 30-year-old holds 6.60 ERA and 1.40 WHIP alongside a 25:7 K:BB through 15 innings across his last five appearances, and he'll be facing a Rays offense that ranks second in the American League with a .775 OPS.
Sep 3, 2023
Nabs three-inning save
Pivetta gave up a run on two hits over three innings Saturday to record his first save of the season in a 9-5 win over the Royals. He struck out five without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
A solo shot by MJ Melendez in the ninth inning was the only blemish on Pivetta's performance. The right-hander hasn't had the same success lately in long relief that he did right after the All-Star break, and over 24 innings since the beginning of August he carries a 6.00 ERA and 1.46 WHIP despite a 35:11 K:BB. Unless the Red Sox get desperate in their attempts to claw back into the playoff picture, Pivetta seems unlikely to return to the rotation in 2023.
Aug 24, 2023
Appears in relief, scoops up win
Pivetta improved to 9-6 while retiring two of the batters he faced via strikeout and walking the other in Boston's 7-5 win over Houston in 10 innings.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta had covered no more than four innings in any of his last six outings while serving as either a starter or a bulk reliever, but he ended up pitching in a high-leverage spot Wednesday after closer Kenley Jansen exited a 4-4 game in the bottom of the ninth with a hamstring injury. Pivetta came on to replace Jansen and recorded the final two outs of the frame to send the game to extras, with the right-hander picking up the win after Boston scored three runs in the top of the 10th. With the Red Sox returning Tanner Houck from the 15-day injured list Tuesday and inserting him into the rotation, Pivetta's run as a starting pitcher looks like it could be over for the time being.
Aug 21, 2023
Fans eight in five innings
Pivetta allowed two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out eight over five innings in Sunday's 6-5 win over the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was the bulk pitcher Sunday, entering after Josh Winckowski threw a scoreless inning to open for Boston. Pivetta, a one-time starter, has shined since moving to the bullpen, while pitching in a variety of roles that included being used as a spot starter. He's often worked more innings than a traditional long reliever, as the Red Sox navigated a stretch with fewer than five healthy starters. With Tanner Houck (face) due back Tuesday, Pivetta can return to a more traditional relief role, as Boston sets its sight on a wild card playoff spot.
Aug 20, 2023
Working in bulk relief Sunday
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Pivetta will work as a bulk reliever in Sunday's game against the Yankees behind opening pitcher Josh Winckowski, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta operated as a traditional starter in both of his last two appearances, but he'll return to a familiar bulk-relief role Sunday while the Red Sox deploy him behind Winckowski, who is unlikely to work more than 1-to-3 innings before being pulled from the contest. The arrangement should improve Pivetta's odds of factoring into any decision, though it may take some strikeout upside off the table while he presumably covers fewer innings than he might as a traditional starter. The Red Sox are expected to get Tanner Houck (face) back from the 15-day injured list either Monday or Tuesday and plan on having him fill a spot in the rotation, so PIvetta could end up sticking in a bullpen role permanently moving forward.
Aug 16, 2023
Goes 4.1 innings in no-decsion
Pivetta did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks over 4.1 innings against the Nationals. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
While Pivetta racked up seven strikeouts, he was only able to make it through 4.1 innings after throwing 86 pitches (60 strikes). The right-hander has 17 punchouts over his last three outings (13.1 innings), though he's struggled to a 6.08 ERA in that span. Overall, Pivetta's 8-6 with a 4.34 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 127:41 K:BB across 101.2 innings this season. With Tanner Houck (face) scheduled to return next week, the Red Sox may elect to move Pivetta back to the bullpen.
Aug 10, 2023
Fans eight in eighth win
Pivetta (8-6) picked up the win in Wednesday's 4-3 victory over the Royals, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
MJ Melendez touched him up for a pair of solo shots, but otherwise Pivetta kept Kansas City in check as he made his 10th start of the season rather than working in a bulk role behind an opener. The right-hander has served up five homers over his last three appearances, but he still sports a sparkling 2.54 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 39:7 K:BB through 28.1 frames since the All-Star break. If he stays on schedule, his next outing lines up for a road trip early next week against the Nationals.
Aug 6, 2023
Works as bulk reliever Saturday
Pivetta gave up three runs on six hits and two walks over four innings of relief in Saturday's 5-4 loss to the Blue Jays. He struck out two and did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
John Schreiber got the nod as the opener for Boston on Saturday, and while manager Alex Cora had hinted before the game that Chris Murphy would be used as the primary pitcher after Schreiber, it was Pivetta who came out of the bullpen to begin the second inning. The right-hander was the only person who seemed to be faked out by the move, however, as he put together his worst appearance since originally shifting to a long relief role back in May. Pivetta still sports an impressive 2.51 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 45:8 K:BB through 32.1 innings since the beginning of July, but it looks like he will continue bouncing between a traditional starting role and bulk relief.
Aug 1, 2023
Strikes out 10 in loss
Pivetta (7-6) allowed three runs on five hits and struck out 10 without walking a batter over 7.1 innings, taking the loss Monday versus the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta had spent much of the last month-plus in a bulk-relief role, but he looked pretty good as a starter in this one. Two of the five hits he allowed were home runs to Cal Raleigh, and Pivetta was also on the hook for the first run of the Mariners' eighth-inning rally. He allowed just seven runs (six earned) over 28.1 innings across six appearances in July. For the season, Pivetta has a 4.08 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 110:34 K:BB through 88.1 innings over 26 appearances (nine starts). It's unclear if he's free from working behind an opener, but his next outing should be at home versus the Blue Jays this weekend.
Jul 30, 2023
Set to start Monday
Pivetta will start Monday's game against the Mariners, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was an option to pitch behind opener Brennan Bernardino during Sunday's game against the Giants, but he didn't enter the game and will instead serve as the starter for Monday's series opener in Seattle. Over his last three outings, the right-hander has struck out 19 in 12 scoreless innings.
Jul 29, 2023
Could follow opener Sunday
Pivetta could pitch behind opener Brennan Bernardino against the Giants on Sunday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta delivered five scoreless frames of bulk relief Tuesday against Atlanta, lining him up to potentially take the mound for Sunday's series finale in San Francisco. Boston's full pitching plans haven't been confirmed, but the right-hander has been excellent out of the bullpen this season with a 1.98 ERA over 41 innings and is a decent bet to take the mound after Bernardino.
Jul 26, 2023
Extends shutout streak Tuesday
Pivetta (7-5) picked up the win Tuesday in a 7-1 victory over Atlanta, allowing three hits and a walk over five scoreless innings of relief. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander continues to thrive as a primary pitcher. Pivetta took over from John Schreiber in the second inning and fired 56 of 80 pitches for strikes against one of baseball's hottest offenses, extending his shutout streak to 12 innings over three appearances in the process. Since getting stretched back out for a long relief role in mid-June, Pivetta has gone 4-1 with a 1.63 ERA, 0.65 WHIP and incredible 44:8 K:BB through 27.2 innings, and the Red Sox aren't likely to mess with a good thing by moving him back into a proper rotation spot.
Jul 23, 2023
Works inning out of 'pen
Pivetta struck out a batter over a perfect seventh inning Saturday in the Red Sox's 8-6 win over the Mets.
ANALYSIS
After striking out 13 over six innings out of the bullpen Monday against the Athletics, Pivetta had been expected to serve as a bulk reliever in Sunday's series finale with the Mets. Instead, the Red Sox opted to work Pivetta back into the mix a day early, with the right-hander tossing 15 pitches en route to retiring the side. According to Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican, Pivetta is still expected to be available out of the bullpen Sunday, though Chris Murphy profiles as the most likely option to serve as a bulk reliever behind opener Brennan Bernardino.
Jul 18, 2023
Remaining in bullpen
Pivetta is expected to work in a bulk-reliever role again Sunday night against the Mets, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta looked sharp yet again Monday evening against the Athletics, fanning 13 batters over six scoreless frames. However, the Red Sox will keep the right-hander in the bullpen for his next appearance as a primary pitcher. "At one point, probably, he needs to start because we're going to play (16) in a row," stated manager Alex Cora. "For now, this is the structure we like."
Jul 18, 2023
Dominant as bulk reliever
Pivetta (6-5) earned the win Monday over the Athletics, allowing two walks while striking out 13 over six no-hit, shutout innings.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta, along with opener Brennan Bernardino and reliever Chris Martin, combined for a one-hit shutout win. This was Pivetta's longest outing since his move to the bullpen in May -- he threw 58 of 87 pitches for strikes. While the opponent was likely a factor, he's been solid lately, allowing six runs (five earned) over his last 21.2 innings with a 38:7 K:BB in that span. The right-hander owns a 4.44 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 94:33 K:BB through 75 innings overall. He'll likely continue in a bulk-relief role, and he should be available to pitch over the weekend versus the Mets at some point.
Jul 7, 2023
Fans eight in win
Pivetta (5-5) yielded three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk over five innings Friday, striking out eight and earning a win over Oakland.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta came out of the bullpen in the third inning and was solid in a bulk relief role, aside from the two-run shot he coughed up to Seth Brown in the seventh. Since moving to the bullpen in May, Pivetta has posted a 2.79 ERA with a 39:12 K:BB through 29 frames. With his recent success, he'll likely maintain his role following openers for the time being.
Jul 7, 2023
Staying in bulk relief role
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Friday that Pivetta will remain in a bulk relief role, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta has been building up his pitch count effectively, even covering five full innings behind opener Brennan Bernardino in Friday's 7-3 win over the Athletics. There was talk of Pivetta starting Sunday's first-half finale versus Oakland, but Cora likes the versatility he provides out of the bullpen.
Jul 5, 2023
Building up to pitch Sunday
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said they are building up Pivetta's pitch count ahead of a potential start Sunday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With Garrett Whitlock (elbow) joining Chris Sale (scapula) and Tanner Houck (facial fracture) on the injured list this week, the Red Sox are limited in the rotation. Pivetta has been a revelation since moving from the rotation to the bullpen in May, and Cora has been reluctant to use him as a starter, feeling his pitch mix plays better in relief. At this point, however, the Red Sox need bulk innings, and keeping Pivetta in the bullpen is a luxury.
Jul 3, 2023
Makes case for rotation
Pivetta allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out six over four relief innings in Sunday's 5-4 win over the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox needed bulk innings out of Pivetta after starter Garrett Whitlock couldn't make it to the second inning due to elbow tightness. Whitlock will undergo an MRI on Monday and could join injured starters Chris Sale (shoulder) and Tanner Houck (facial fracture) on the injured list. Corey Kluber (shoulder), who was demoted to the bullpen, is also on the IL. With dwindling starter options, Boston could return Pivetta to the rotation. He's sparkled in relief, posting a 2.63 ERA and 0.92 WHIP over 24 innings out of the bullpen. Five of his 13 relief appearances have lasted at least three innings.
Jun 29, 2023
Sharp in bulk role
Pivetta allowed two runs on one hit and two walks while striking out seven over 3.1 relief innings in Wednesday's 6-2 loss to Miami.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox scheduled a bullpen game with Kaleb Ort throwing the first two innings followed by Pivetta, who retired 10 of the first 11 batters faced before back-to-back walks in the sixth inning. At that point, rain fell and the game was delayed. When play resumed, Josh Winckowski and poor infield defense -- a common theme for Boston in 2023 -- conspired to let both of Pivetta's runners to score. A former member of the starting rotation, Pivetta has thrived in a long-relief role, posting a 2.16 ERA with 18 strikeouts and seven walks over 16.2 innings (11 appearances).
Jun 19, 2023
Picks up win in matinee
Pivetta (4-4) earned the win in Sunday's 6-2 victory over the Yankees, striking out four over three hitless innings.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was excellent Sunday, blanking the Yankees for three innings to grab his first win since May 16. The 30-year-old Pivetta has found success in a relief role, pitching to a 2.20 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 16.1 innings since moving to the bullpen. Overall, he sports a 5.11 ERA with a 1.37 WHIP and 60:26 K:BB across 56.1 innings this season.
May 29, 2023
Shines in relief role
Pivetta allowed two hits and struck out three over three scoreless relief innings in Sunday's 4-2 loss to Arizona.
ANALYSIS
The Diamondbacks tattooed starter Tanner Houck and were in position to run away, but Pivetta gave the Red Sox a chance to come back with his best relief appearance since moving to the bullpen. In three outings as a reliever, Pivetta has a 3.24 ERA with nine strikeouts and zero walks over 8.1 innings.
May 22, 2023
Makes first relief appearance
Pivetta allowed one run on two hits while striking out three over 2.1 relief innings in Sunday's 7-0 loss to San Diego.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta made his first relief appearance since being removed from the starting rotation last Wednesday. Speculation about Pivetta moving to the bullpen bubbled up for a couple of weeks, and the right-hander bristled when asked about the potential move, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. He's struck a more accepting tone after being told last week the move was official. "I just got moved to the bullpen so that's where I belong and that's where I am," Pivetta said. "I'm going to show up there for my teammates out there and go out and do my job." Pivetta has a 6.30 ERA as a starter, including an 8.10 mark in his last six starts.
May 18, 2023
Moving to bullpen
The Red Sox moved Pivetta to the bullpen, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Decisions needed to be made, as the Red Sox operated with a six-man for the past week with a seventh, Garrett Whitlock (elbow), on the way. The first domino was Pivetta, who was in the bullpen for Wednesday's win over Seattle. He will throw in a multi-inning relief role once he's ready to pitch after tossing 98 pitches Tuesday. Pivetta's 6.30 ERA over eight starts made him a logical choice. Tanner Houck could be joining him soon.
May 17, 2023
Stumbles into win Tuesday
Pivetta (3-3) picked up the win in Tuesday's 9-4 victory over the Mariners, giving up four runs on six hits and four walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
It wasn't pretty, but Pivetta pitched just well enough to benefit from the run support Boston's hitters provided. The right-hander threw only 58 of 98 pitches for strikes before exiting, and he's issued multiple free passes in six of his eight starts this season while serving up at least one homer in seven of them. That dangerous combination has led to a 6.30 ERA and 1.55 WHIP through 40 innings, and he'll be a volatile fantasy option in his next outing, likely to come on the road early next week against the Angels.
May 10, 2023
Burned by Atlanta
Pivetta (2-3) took the loss Tuesday, coughing up seven runs on eight hits and three walks over four innings as the Red Sox were downed 9-3 by Atlanta. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
The right-handed also hit a batter and uncorked a wild pitch in an erratic outing that saw him throw only 52 of 90 pitches for strikes. Pivetta has served up at least one homer and given up at least three earned runs in five straight starts, leaving him with a 6.23 ERA and 1.47 WHIP on the season. With James Paxton (hamstring) set to join the rotation this weekend, someone from the group of Pivetta, Tanner Houck and Brayan Bello figures to lose their spot, but it's not yet clear what Boston's plans are for its staff. Pivetta is the only one of the three who doesn't have minor-league options remaining, however, so despite his struggles he likely isn't going anywhere.
May 4, 2023
Evens record with victory
Pivetta (2-2) earned the win over Toronto on Wednesday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six batters over six innings.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was dinged for a solo home run in each of the second and third innings, but he gave up only one additional run and completed a season-high six innings to notch his first quality start of the campaign. The right-hander racked up 14 swinging strikes and punched out six batters, marking the fourth time in six starts that he's reached the latter total. Pivetta was tagged for six runs in a start against the Angels on April 15, but he's given up four runs or fewer in each of his other outings this season.
Apr 28, 2023
Takes second loss
Pivetta (1-2) allowed four runs on five hits and two walks over five innings Friday, striking out five and taking a loss against Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta stumbled out of the gate Friday, coughing up three runs in the first two innings. He later allowed a solo homer to Mike Zunino in the fourth. After a pair of solid outings to begin the year, Pivetta has given up 13 runs over his last 14.2 frames, raising his season ERA to 5.11. He'll look for better results in his next start, which is projected to be at home against the Blue Jays next week.
Apr 22, 2023
Picks up first win of the season
Pivetta (1-1) earned the win Friday, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk over 5.2 innings against the Brewers. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta rebounded nicely after giving up six runs to the Angels in his last start. The 30-year-old posted his longest outing of the season Friday, as he picked up two strikeouts in the sixth inning before being lifted after his only walk of the night. Pivetta's seven punch outs pumped him up to a 23:9 K:BB ratio and he's down to a 4.58 ERA in 19.2 innings.
Apr 15, 2023
Gives up six runs in no-decision
Pivetta did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing six runs on five hits and three walks over four innings during a 9-7 win over the Angels. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta struggled out of the gate, allowing four runs in the first inning, but he was able to settle down and tossed three scoreless frames before getting into trouble again in the fifth. After giving up three consecutive hits, including an RBI single by Anthony Rendon that cut Boston's lead to 6-5, Pivetta was pulled in favor of Kaleb Ort, who surrendered a game-tying knock to Gio Urshela. Coming into the contest, Pivetta had allowed just one earned run over his first two starts (10 innings), but Saturday's poor outing dropped his ERA to 4.50.
Apr 10, 2023
Turns in scoreless outing
Pivetta allowed three hits and two walks over five shutout frames during Monday's loss to the Rays. He struck out six and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was locked into a pitcher's duel and was denied his first win due to Boston's lackluster offense. Despite walking just two batters, 30 of his 83 pitches were balls. Pivetta forced 14 whiffs on 37 swings and now has a 12:5 K:BB through 10 innings. He's lined up for a home matchup with the Angels this weekend.
Apr 5, 2023
Hurt by homers in Tuesday's loss
Pivetta (0-1) took the loss Tuesday as the Red Sox were downed 4-1 by the Pirates, giving up three runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
The strikeouts, as well as a passed ball by Reese McGuire that kept the second inning alive, helped salvage his night from a fantasy perspective, but Pivetta also served up homers to Ji Hwan Bae and Bryan Reynolds. The right-hander allowed a career-high 27 long balls last year, and his issues keeping the ball in the park are a large part of the reason why he's never had an ERA below 4.50 in his big-league career. Pivetta lines up for a two-step next week, as Boston heads to Tampa Bay before hosting the Angels on the weekend.
Mar 10, 2023
Makes second start
Pivetta allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out two over two innings in Thursday's spring start against the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
The Yankees made Pivetta work hard, spraying a lot of foul balls and elevating the right-hander's pitch count. His time on the mound included an 11-pitch at-bat to Aaron Judge and a couple of eight-pitch encounters. In between, there were a lot of balls outside the zone; Pivetta threw just 28 of 48 pitches for strikes. This being spring training, though, both PIvetta and manager Alex Cora accentuated the positives to Dawn Klemish of MLB.com. The pitcher said he felt good, could have gone further if not for the pitch count, and other than one at-bat, it was "smooth sailing." Cora said it was a "step in the right direction" for Pivetta.
Mar 5, 2023
Makes spring debut
Pivetta allowed three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out four over 1.2 innings in Saturday's spring start against the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta, who was making his Grapefruit League debut after being delayed due to illness, needed 43 pitches to get those five outs. Red Sox manager Alex Cora told Julian McWilliams of the Boston Globe that both his curveball and fastball were good but location was the culprit. Pivetta will be part of the rotation, likely slotting in third behind Chris Sale and Corey Kluber.
Mar 3, 2023
Set for spring debut Saturday
Pivetta (illness) will make his Grapefruit League debut Saturday versus the Astros, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta contracted COVID-19 shortly before the start of camp and has been eased into things so far. He won't be able to pitch for Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic as hoped, but the veteran right-hander is on track to be ready for the start of the regular season.
Feb 22, 2023
Bows out of World Baseball Classic
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Pivetta (illness) won't pitch for the Canadian team during the upcoming World Baseball Classic, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta contracted COVID-19 last week, and while he reported back to camp Tuesday and completed a throwing session, he hasn't bounced back from the illness quite as swiftly as he had hoped. Since he apparently wasn't convinced that he would be in top form by the time Canada begins playing in games, Pivetta will instead stick around at Red Sox camp and advance through a throwing program at a more comfortable pace. Though Pivetta's slow recovery from the illness is expected to delay his entry into the Grapefruit League pitching schedule, he still looks like a good bet to get built up in time for Opening Day.
Feb 17, 2023
Coming back from illness
Pivetta had to cut a workout short Friday due to illness, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander walked off the field with a trainer, but it's believed his stamina just isn't where it needs to be yet after a bout with illness. It sounds like Pivetta should be back in action in a day or two.
Jan 13, 2023
Settles with Boston
Pivetta signed a one-year, $5.35 million contract with the Red Sox on Friday to avoid arbitration, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta recorded a 4.56 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 2022, though he was still able to strike batters out at an effective rate and made 33 starts for Boston. He has almost never battled injury over the last two seasons, making him a solid rotation piece to have, although consistent production may be harder to ask of him.
Oct 6, 2022
Shaky versus Rays
Pivetta pitched four innings, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five batters in Wednesday's win over the Rays. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta tossed two scoreless innings to open Wednesday's outing before he surrendered a two-run homer to Ji-Man Choi in the third frame. The long ball accounted for all the damage on the the right-hander's line, though he allowed seven batters to reach base. Pivetta limped into the finish of the 2022 campaign, producing a 6.29 ERA and 1.77 WHIP over his final five outings. On the season overall, he ended with a 4.56 ERA and 1.38 WHIP while striking out 175 batters over 179.2 innings in 33 starts with the Red Sox.

Allows three homers in no decision
Pivetta did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against the Yankees. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta threw four clean innings but was damaged by the home run. He allowed a two-run shot off the bat of Marwin Gonzalez in the third and a solo homer from Aaron Judge in the sixth before he was pulled with one out and two runners on base. Pivetta has been inconsistent this season as he has surrendered three or more runs in 13 of his 29 starts, including five starts of five or more runs, but he still owns a manageable 4.29 ERA through 160.2 innings.

Pitches well in loss

ANALYSIS
Pivetta allowed two doubles -- one from Francisco Mejia and the other from Taylor Walls -- in addition to an RBI-single from Walls with one out in the fifth. The righty has pitched six innings or more just twice in his last 12 starts. The 29-year-old's 4.29 ERA in 2022 may seem unspectacular, but it is a career-best in six major-league seasons.

Likely to make next start
Manager Alex Cora said after Friday's win over the Rangers that Pivetta (calf) will likely be able to make his next start, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta exited Friday's matchup with a left calf contusion and was limping heavily after the game, but it doesn't appear as though he'll be forced to spend time on the injured list. The right-hander will likely be monitored in the coming days, but he projects to make his next start on the road against Tampa Bay on Wednesday.

Diagnosed with left calf contusion
Pivetta was removed from Friday's game against the Rangers due to a left calf contusion, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta sustained his injury while fielding a grounder in the top of the third inning Friday, and he was replaced to begin the fourth frame. The right-hander will presumably be monitored further before the Red Sox determine his status for his next start. If Pivetta is cleared to pitch, he tentatively lines up to start on the road against Tampa Bay on Wednesday.

Aug 11, 2022
Takes loss despite solid effort
Pivetta (8-9) took the loss Wednesday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over six innings in a 8-4 loss against Atlanta. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Aside from a two-out, three-run homer from the struggling Marcell Ozuna, Pivetta held Atlanta in check all night. However, his offense couldn't keep him in the game as he earned his ninth loss of the campaign. Across his last four starts (21.2 innings), Pivetta has allowed 28 hits, 11 runs and eight walks, but he does have 20 strikeouts during that stretch. His next start is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday's matchup in Pittsburgh.
Aug 5, 2022
Permits three runs in no-decision
Pivetta didn't factor into the decision during Thursday's 7-3 loss to Kansas City, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts in five innings.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was given a two-run lead before he took the mound but gave it right back by surrendering two of his own on two hits in the bottom of the inning while allowing another run on three baserunners in the fifth. Aside from a one-run outing July 25, the 29-year-old has allowed at least three runs in each of his last six starts and has seen his ERA balloon from 3.23 to 4.51 as a result. In addition to 4.51 ERA, Pivetta carries a 1.33 WHIP with 119 strikeouts in 123.2 innings into his next start scheduled to come midweek against Atlanta.

Pivetta carried a 3.23 ERA through his first 16 starts, but that number has ballooned to 4.47 with multiple blow-ups over his past five outings.
Jul 25, 2022
Yields one run in no-decision
Pivetta allowed one run on seven hits and three walks over 5.2 innings during Monday's win over Cleveland. He struck out six and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta tossed four shutout frames before giving up an RBI single to Jose Ramirez in the fifth. While he failed to get back in the win column, it was a strong outing for the 29-year-old after he'd been tagged with 20 runs over his previous three starts. Pivetta lowered his season ERA to 4.35 alongside a 110:42 K:BB through 20 appearances. He's projected to face the Brewers at home this weekend.
Jul 17, 2022
Continues to struggle
Pivetta (8-7) took the loss against the Yankees on Saturday, allowing seven runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four over 4.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta gave up four runs in a brutal first inning before keeping New York off the scoreboard in the following three frames. The Yankees got to him again in the fifth, however, and the right-hander was ultimately charged with seven total runs. After compiling a respectable 3.23 ERA through his first 16 starts, Pivetta has given up 20 earned runs over 13.1 frames across his past three outings, pushing his season ERA up to 4.50. He'll look for a much-needed reset over the All-Star break.
Jul 10, 2022
Hit hard again
Pivetta didn't factor into the decision during Sunday's 11-6 win over the Yankees, allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta struggled early -- surrendering two runs in each of the first three innings -- and departed after putting two runners on in the fourth. Boston rallied to score the game's final nine runs and erase the 29-year-old from the ledger, however Pivetta's now permitted 13 runs combined in his last two starts across nine innings, causing his ERA to inflate nearly a full run from 3.23 to 4.08. He's slated for a rematch against New York next weekend.
Jul 6, 2022
Lit up for seven runs
Pivetta (8-6) gave up seven earned runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four over 5.2 innings to take the loss in an 8-4 defeat to the Rays on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta had been pitching well lately but the Rays tagged him for a couple of big innings and he took his sixth loss of the season. Pivetta gave up a bases-loaded double off the bat of Kevin Kiermaier in the first and then couldn't get out of the sixth as the Rays picked him apart with hits. The 29-year-old right-hander was in the midst of being surprisingly effective this year with numbers well below his career 4.88 ERA and 1.36 WHIP. This seven-run outing could mark the beginning of his regression towards career averages. Look for him to make his next start against the Yankees on Sunday.
Jun 30, 2022
Quality start Wednesday
Pivetta allowed two runs on five hits, three walks and a hit-by-pitch with five strikeouts in six innings in a no-decision versus the Blue Jays on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta has logged quality starts in all but one of his last 11 outings. He gave up an RBI single to Santiago Espinal and a solo home run to George Springer to account for the runs on his line Wednesday. The strong pitching has Pivetta at a 3.23 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 91:32 K:BB across 94.2 innings in 16 starts overall. He carries an 8-5 record into his next projected start, currently set for a home outing against the Rays next week.
Jun 25, 2022
Delivers another strong start
Pivetta (8-5) earned the win Friday against the Guardians after giving up two runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and zero walks over seven innings.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander threw 66 of 98 pitches for strikes and generated only five whiffs, but he was able to limit the damage since only one of the nine hits he allowed went for extra bases. It's the third straight victory for Pivetta, and he has a 1.64 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB across 22 innings during that stretch. He tentatively lines up for his next start Wednesday in Toronto.
Jun 19, 2022
Fans 10 in victory
Pivetta (7-5) allowed one run on four hits and four walks over seven innings Sunday, striking out 10 and earning a win over the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was tagged with an RBI single from Harrison Bader in the fourth inning but turned in a clean outing otherwise. He struck out double-digit batters for the second time in his last three outings; the four walks caused him to throw 108 pitches but he also forced 12 swinging strikes, his highest since May 18. After starting 0-4 through his first five starts, Pivetta is 7-1 with a 61:16 K:BB and a stellar 1.77 ERA over his last nine appearances. He's lined up to start in Cleveland next week.
Jun 15, 2022
Dazzles over eight frames
Pivetta (6-5) earned the win Tuesday against the A's after giving up one run on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks over eight innings.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander kept Oakland off the board through seven frames, but Stephen Vogt broke the shutout with a solo homer during the eighth inning. Still, it was another dominant outing for Pivetta, who has a 1.83 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 51:12 K:BB across his past eight outings. He tentatively lines up for a matchup against the Cardinals on Sunday.
Jun 10, 2022
Takes loss Thursday
Pivetta (5-5) took the loss against the Angels on Thursday, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out 11 over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta's season-high 11 strikeouts were impressive, and he started out the contest with four scoreless innings. However, Shoehei Ohtani broke through against him with a two-run shot in the fifth, and Pivetta was pulled after issuing two straight free passes to begin the sixth. Those walks came back to haunt him as both baserunners were cashed in after he departed from the game. Pivetta gave up more than three earned runs in each of his first three starts this season, but this was the first time he surrendered that many runs in nine games since. He's posted a 2.45 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 59:14 K:BB across 55 frames while recording a 5-2 record over the nine-game stretch.
Jun 4, 2022
Throws seven shutout innings in win
Pivetta (5-4) earned the win Saturday over the Athletics, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out seven in seven shutout innings.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta's streak of quality starts is up to six, and he's earned the win in his last five turns on the hill. He gave up next to nothing Saturday in a dominant performance. The month-long hot streak has dropped his ERA from 7.84 on May to 3.50 now. The right-hander has added a 1.10 WHIP and 58:21 K:BB through 61.2 innings across 11 starts overall. Pivetta will look to keep things rolling on the road next week against a tougher opponent in the Angels.
May 29, 2022
Earns fourth consecutive win
Pivetta (4-4) allowed a run on five hits and three walks while striking out five in six innings to earn the win over the Orioles on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta posted a 10.03 ERA over his first three starts in 2022, but he's turned things around recently and has logged five consecutive quality starts. The right-hander has been rewarded with wins in his last four outings, and he's logged a 1.59 ERA, 30:6 K:BB and 0.76 WHIP in 34 innings over his last five starts. Pivetta tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against Oakland on Saturday.
May 25, 2022
Quality start in win Tuesday
Pivetta (3-4) earned the win Tuesday after he tossed six innings, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five against the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta held the White Sox off the board over the first three innings before Jose Abreu launched a two-run homer in the fourth frame. He allowed another run in the fifth before pitching a scoreless sixth inning to end his outing. Pivetta has now registered four consecutive quality starts, posting a 1.61 ERA and 0.68 WHIP with 25 strikeouts over 28 innings in those outings. The 29-year-old has won three straight starts and he'll look to make it four when he toes the rubber next, which tentatively lines up to be Sunday versus the Orioles.
May 19, 2022
Dazzles after leadoff homer
Pivetta (2-4) earned the win after allowing one run on two hits across nine innings during Wednesday's 5-1 win over the Astros. He finished with eight strikeouts and zero walks.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta allowed a leadoff blast to Jose Altuve in the first inning and then proceeded to shut down the Astros' potent offense for nine consecutive innings. After posting a dismal 7.84 ERA though his first five starts, the 29-year-old right-hander has been dominant over his last three appearances. During that stretch, Pivetta has allowed just two runs across 22 innings while sporting a 20:1 K:BB. His next start is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday's matchup with the White Sox.
May 13, 2022
Picks up first win
Pivetta (1-4) allowed one run on three hits and a walk over seven innings Friday, striking out four and earning a win over Texas.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta cruised through six shutout innings with little resistance from the Rangers. He threw a wild pitch in the seventh, letting Kole Calhoun break up the shutout after he tripled earlier in the frame. The 29-year-old right-hander has allowed just one run over his last two outings after posting a brutal 7.84 ERA through his first five starts. Pivetta is expected to face the Astros at home next week.
May 8, 2022
Punches out eight
Pivetta allowed five hits and no walks while striking out eight across six innings Saturday against the White Sox. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta turned in his best performance of the season, as he generated 14 swinging strikes across 91 total pitches. Also notable is that Pivetta has not walked a batter in either of his last two starts, spanning 10.1 frames. That stands in contrast to his first four appearances of the campaign when he handed out 13 free passes across 16.1 innings. Despite the strong outing, Pivetta still owns a 6.08 ERA in six starts.
May 1, 2022
Dealt fourth loss
Pivetta (0-4) was charged with the loss Sunday in Baltimore after allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts and zero walks across 4.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta blanked the Orioles through four frames Sunday, but things fell apart in the fifth as he gave up two runs on three singles and a double before being pulled. The bullpen was unable to bail him out, and one more run came across. It was shaping up to be the right-hander's best start of the season, but he was unable to finish strong and is now tied for the league lead with four losses. Pivetta had 13 walks across his first four starts, so the fact he didn't issue a free pass in Baltimore is a positive step. However, the 29-year-old's 7.84 ERA and 1.84 WHIP will understandably scare off most fantasy managers.
Apr 27, 2022
Uneven effort in no-decision
Pivetta didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Blue Jays, giving up two runs on three hits and four walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander retired the first six batters he faced, but things quickly went sideways for Pivetta after he issued a leadoff walk to Santago Espinal in the third. He ended up needing 98 pitches (60 strikes) to record 14 outs and exited the game with Boston down 2-1, although a rally in the eighth took him off the hook for the loss. Pivetta is impossible to trust on fantasy rosters right now regardless of his matchup, as his 8.27 ERA and 1.96 WHIP through 16.1 innings are well-earned given his ugly 16.7 percent walk rate and 2.20 HR/9.
Apr 21, 2022
Takes away positives in loss
Pivetta allowed five runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out four over four innings in Wednesday's 6-1 loss to the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta's ERA climbed to 10.03 following his third start, and none of have offered much promise. He's been fighting mechanics and reduced velocity, which reared itself early Wednesday, particularly in Toronto's five-run second inning. His final two innings were better after pitching coach Dave Bush talked to the right-hander about his mechanics, per Christopher Smith of MassLive.com. "Honestly, I believe the last two innings were his best innings so far out of the three outings (this season)," manager Alex Cora said. "Velocity went up. There was some 95, 96 (mph). It seems like he was more aggressive with the fastball." Pivetta will get a chance for revenge in his next scheduled start, Monday on the road in Toronto.
Apr 15, 2022
Mechanics off in poor start
Pivetta fell to 0-2 on the season after allowing four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out a pair Friday against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Per Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican, manager Alex Cora mentioned after the game that Pivetta's mechanics were off, leading to a drop of velocity and a corresponding drop in effectiveness. That gives some hope that Pivetta could turn things around soon if he corrects the flaw, which he'll need to do to remain in the rotation. After two poor innings Friday, he's now given up eight runs on nine hits (inlcuding three homers) in 7.2 innings of work, striking out six while walking five. It's tough to have much confidence in him next week, as he'll face the Blue Jays' loaded offense Wednesday.
Apr 9, 2022
Takes loss in season debut
Pivetta (0-1) was tagged with the loss against the Yankees on Saturday as a result of allowing four runs in 5.2 innings. He yielded four hits and three walks while striking out four.
ANALYSIS
Boston staked Pivetta to a second-inning two run lead, and the right-hander kept the Yankees off the scoreboard for three frames. However, he surrendered a game-tying two-run homer to Anthony Rizzo in the fourth and a two-run shot to Giancarlo Stanton in the sixth. Home runs have been an issue for Pivetta throughout his career, so it's fitting that all four runs scored against him Saturday came by way of the long ball. He'll try to get into the win column in his next outing, which is tentatively scheduled to take place at home against Minnesota late next week.
Apr 3, 2022
Makes final spring start
Pivetta allowed one run on six hits and one walk while striking out six over five innings in Sunday's spring start against the Braves.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta made his final Grapefruit League start and is in position to pitch the second game of the season, Saturday, April 9, against the Yankees. He had a lot of traffic, including a hit batsman, but he was touched only by Matt Olson's first-inning solo home run. The right-hander finished spring training with eight runs allowed (six earned) on 15 hits and six walks while punching out 22 batters over 15.2 innings.
Mar 29, 2022
Makes third start
Pivetta allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five over four-plus innings in Tuesday's spring training start against the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta took the mound for the third time and clearly didn't have his best stuff. In addition to the three free passes, the right-hander gave up two home runs. He did, however, get his pitch count up to 78, which puts him right on schedule with one more Grapefruit League start before he starts the second game of the regular season. The plan is for Pivetta to throw six innings the next time out, Dawn Klemish of MLB.com reports.
Mar 25, 2022
Roughed up in second start
Pivetta allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out six over 3.2 innings in Thursday's spring training game against the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta dazzled in his first Grapefruit League start but was considerably less effective his second time out. The Orioles tagged him for two solo home runs and plated runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Pivetta has time to make two more starts before taking the ball for the second game of the regular season, April 9, in Yankee Stadium.
Mar 22, 2022
Avoids arbiter
Pivetta and the Red Sox avoided arbitration Tuesday, agreeing to a one-year, $2.65 million deal, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta had something of a breakout in his first full season with Boston last year, though while he did produce a career-best ERA, his 4.53 mark was far from exceptional. That figure did come with a solidly above-average 26.5 percent strikeout rate, which gives him more fantasy value that other pitchers who prevent runs at a similarly mediocre rate.
Mar 20, 2022
Sparkles in debut
Pivetta retired all nine batters faced and struck out five over three perfect innings in Saturday's spring game against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta turned in a dominant effort Saturday and appeared poised to be the team's No. 2 starter behind Nathan Eovaldi, following the rib injury that knocked Chris Sale off schedule. "I felt good. Was able to command the zone very well, get my curveball over for strikes, get a couple changeups, a couple sliders -- two sliders -- for strikeouts. So it was good," Pivetta told Ian Browne of MLB.com. "A good one to build on." The 29-year-old right-hander earned a larger role after he turned in several sparkling performances in 2021, including a couple in the playoffs. Pivetta's on tap to start the second game of the season, April 9, in Yankee Stadium.
Mar 16, 2022
Could pitch second game
Pivetta will likely pitch the second game of the regular season against the Yankees on Saturday, Apr. 9 Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chris Sale's rib injury, which removed him from an expected Opening Day start sends a ripple through Boston's rotation. Nathan Eovaldi will start Opening Day on Apr. 7 most most likely followed by Pivetta, who is a certainty for the rotation. The back final three spots of the rotation will likely be some combination of Michael Wacha, Rich Hill, Tanner Houck and Garrett Whitlock.
Mar 15, 2022
Named Saturday's starter
Pivetta will start Saturday's spring training game against the Twins, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta takes the ball after Nathan Eovaldi starts Friday. The 29-year-old right-hander tossed live batting practice Tuesday in preparation for the start. Assuming Chris Sale resumes his role as the team's No. 1 starter, Pivetta lines up as Boston's third starter.
Oct 20, 2021
Lasts five innings in no-decision
Pivetta allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out three in five innings during Tuesday's loss to the Astros in Game 4 of the ALCS. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was effective in his first postseason start, with his only blemish coming via a solo home run in the top of the first inning. The right-hander threw 65 pitches (36 strikes) while allowing just four baserunners, but he was forced to settle for a no-decision since the Astros put together a late comeback. Across his first three playoff appearances, Pivetta has posted a 2.63 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 13.2 innings.
Oct 18, 2021
Confirmed to start Game 4
Pivetta has officially been named the starting pitcher for Game 4 of the ALCS on Tuesday against Houston, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox were waiting to see how Game 3 played out before confirming Pivetta as the team's starter for Tuesday, as they were also prepared to use him out of the bullpen if needed. However, Boston jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and never looked back. Eduardo Rodriguez came through in a big way by hurling six strong innings, clearing the way for Pivetta to take the mound in Game 4. His last appearance dates back to Game 3 of the ALDS on Oct. 10, earning the victory out of the bullpen.
Oct 18, 2021
Lined up for Game 4 start
Pivetta will start Game 4 of the ALCS against the Astros on Tuesday if he isn't needed out of the bullpen Monday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Every postseason game has at least a bit of an all-hands-on-deck element to it, so it's possible Pivetta will be used Monday, especially if the game goes to extra innings. With games scheduled on three consecutive days, however, the Red Sox would prefer to have the Canadian righty handle multiple innings at the start of Tuesday's contest. Pivetta has pitched well in his first taste of postseason action this year, allowing three runs in 8.2 innings while striking out 11 batters.
Oct 9, 2021
Likely to start Game 4
Pivetta will likely start Game 4 of the ALDS against the Rays on Monday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta served as a long reliever in Thursday's Game 1 loss and allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four in 4.2 innings. Manager Alex Cora said that Eduardo Rodriguez and Chris Sale are also candidates to start Monday, but Pivetta is the most likely option.
Oct 4, 2021
Earns save to secure playoff spot
Pivetta fired a perfect inning with one strikeout to earn the save in Sunday's 7-5 win over Washington.
ANALYSIS
Manager Alex Cora used an all-hands-on-deck approach to the late innings Sunday, with Eduardo Rodriguez earning the win after a scoreless eighth inning before Pivetta converted his second major-league save. The right-hander posted a mediocre 4.66 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 46.1 innings across 10 starts since the start of August, so he's no lock for a rotation spot should the Red Sox get past Tuesday's AL Wild Card Game versus the Yankees.
Sep 30, 2021
Falls to Orioles
Pivetta (9-8) allowed three earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out eight across 4.2 innings to take the loss Thursday against the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta allowed all three of his earned runs on a home run by Ryan Mountcastle in the third inning. He was fairly sharp otherwise, generating 16 swinging strikes on 87 total pitches. Since returning from the injured list Sep. 12, Pivetta has allowed eight earned runs across 19 innings while striking out 23 and walking only three. He'll end the regular season with a 4.56 ERA with a 174:65 K:BB across 154 frames.

Whiffs seven in no-decision
Pivetta gave up one run on three hits over 5.1 innings in a no-decision against the Yankees on Saturday. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta blanked the Yankees through five innings before Hansel Robles uncorked a wild pitch in the sixth inning that scored Gio Urshela, who had singled off Pivetta. It was a strong effort from Pivetta, who is winless in his last five starts and hasn't been able to complete six innings in any of them. He's scheduled to make his final start of the regular season next Thursday in Baltimore.
Sep 19, 2021
Ineffective against Baltimore
Pivetta allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk over 3.2 innings against the Orioles on Saturday. He also struck out three and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was unable to take advantage of a favorable home matchup against the last-place Orioles, giving up a two-run homer to Ryan Mountcastle in the first inning and a solo blast to backup catcher Austin Wynns in the second. Pivetta was unable to make it out of the fourth inning, a disappointing result after putting together a sharp performance in his first start off the injured list earlier in the week. He's lined up to face the Yankees at home in his next scheduled start.
Sep 13, 2021
Strong outing in return to action
Pivetta allowed one run (zero earned) on three hits while striking out five over 5.1 innings in a no-decision against the White sox on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta made his first start since Aug. 30 after spending some time on the COVID injured list. He held the White Sox scoreless through five innings before the leadoff man in the sixth reached on a throwing error. A sacrifice bunt would move him over to second and then Luis Robert singled him home. It was a very positive outing for the 28-year-old after giving up four runs in each of his last three starts. Pivetta also managed to not walk a batter in a start for the first time since May 14. The right-hander now owns a 4.49 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 156:62 K:BB over 140.1 innings. He lines up to face the Orioles in Boston next weekend.
Sep 12, 2021
Activated to start Sunday
Pivetta (COVID-19) was activated from the virus-related injured list ahead of Sunday's start against the White Sox, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
The vaccinated Pivetta is back with the team after testing positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday. The righty has struggled in each of his last three starts and faces a tough White Sox lineup today, although perhaps his being well-rested will lead to a stronger performance.
Sep 11, 2021
Confirmed for Sunday
Pivetta (COVID-19) will start Sunday's game against the White Sox, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He has been sidelined since Aug. 30. Pivetta gave up 12 earned runs in 10.2 innings over his last three starts, and this is a tough matchup for him to return for.
Sep 10, 2021
Could return for Sunday start
Manager Alex Cora said that the Red Sox hope Pivetta (illness) will be cleared to join the team and start Sunday against the White Sox, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was placed on the COVID list Sunday and it was later revealed that he tested positive for the virus. Nonetheless, since he is vaccinated, there is a possibility that he could be cleared from protocols in less than 10 days, which would allow him to take the ball for Sunday's series finale in Chicago.
Sep 8, 2021
Weekend return not ruled out
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said he's maintaining hope that Pivetta (illness) may be cleared to return from the COVID-19 injured list to start Saturday's game against the White Sox, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was placed on the COVID-19 lL on Sunday and was revealed Tuesday to have tested positive for the virus, despite being fully vaccinated. Because Pivetta is vaccinated, Cora indicated there's a chance the right-hander could return earlier than anticipated, but Pivetta's availability will likely hinge on him exhibiting no symptoms while testing negative for the virus on consecutive occasions. The Red Sox would likely treat Saturday's game as a bullpen day if Pivetta isn't cleared to make the start.
Sep 7, 2021
Tests positive for COVID-19
Pivetta tested positive for COVID-19, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
He was already on the COVID-19 injured list. Pivetta was vaccinated, so this is especially frustrating for him and the Red Sox. He could return to the big-league rotation next week.
Sep 5, 2021
Goes on COVID-19 IL
Pivetta was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Sunday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The righty had been scheduled to start Sunday's game against Cleveland, but obviously that won't be happening. How long Pivetta might be sidelined will depend on whether he tested positive and whether he's vaccinated, details that haven't been disclosed.
Aug 26, 2021
Allows two homers Wednesday
Pivetta yielded four runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts in four innings, taking a no-decision versus Minnesota on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
While it wasn't as short as his 1.2-inning appearance versus the Yankees a week ago, Pivetta still struggled to a degree Wednesday. This was just the third time all year he's allowed multiple home runs in a start, and the first time since June 29. The right-hander's ERA ticked up to 4.57 with a 1.31 WHIP and 145:57 K:BB across 130 innings in 25 starts. He lines up for a tough matchup in Tampa Bay next week.
Aug 19, 2021
Chased early by Yanks
Pivetta (9-6) allowed four runs on four hits and three walks while striking out one over 1.2 innings to take the loss to the Yankees on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
This was Pivetta's shortest outing in a Boston uniform, but he did not get much help from his defense in a four-run second inning. J.D. Martinez, starting in right field, could not up with a fly ball and Bobby Dalbec had a grounder deflect off his glove. Pivetta had two consecutive strong efforts before his rude introduction to the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry. The right-hander looks to get back on track in his next start, expected to be Wednesday at home against Minnesota.
Aug 13, 2021
Goes six innings in win
Pivetta (9-5) allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out eight in six innings to earn the win over Baltimore on Friday.
ANALYSIS
The only run on Pivetta's ledger was a short third-inning homer from Richie Martin. The right-hander was otherwise excellent for the second straight start, although the quality of competition likely played a factor Friday. The 28-year-old has a 4.20 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 139:52 K:BB through 124.1 innings in 23 starts. He's projected to make a road start versus the Yankees next week.
Aug 8, 2021
Scoreless outing in no-decision
Pivetta didn't factor into the decision Saturday in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays, tossing six innings of one-hit ball. He walked one and struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was coming off four straight outings in which he gave up at least three runs, so this was an excellent bounce-back effort for him. He has been struggling badly in recent weeks and only has two quality starts across six appearances since the beginning of July, a span in which he's also posted a 4.09 ERA.
Aug 1, 2021
Another abbreviated outing
Pivetta (8-5) lost Sunday's 3-2 game at the hands of the Rays, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk with six strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was rolling to open the game, retiring the first eight Rays he faced, but walked Mike Zunino and surrendered a Brandon Lowe two-run homer immediately after to fall behind for good. He allowed two more hits and a run in the fifth before being removed with 76 pitches. The 28-year-old has now failed to reach five innings in three of his last four starts, permitting at least three runs in all four. He lines up to face Toronto next weekend.
Jul 26, 2021
No-decision versus Jays
Pivetta allowed four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three in 4.2 innings, taking a no-decision versus Toronto on Monday.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander allowed four runs or more for the fourth time in his last five starts, and Monday was the third time in that span he's failed to complete five innings. Pivetta's inconsistency has led to a 4.51 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 120:48 K:BB through 107.2 innings this season. He lines up for a tough road start at Tampa Bay this weekend in a battle of the AL East's two best teams.
Jul 19, 2021
Picks up eighth win
Pivetta earned the win after allowing four runs on 11 hits and two walks while striking out four across 6.2 innings Monday against the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta cruised through the first three innings before surrendering four runs in the fourth. Despite a rough frame, he managed to work nearly seven innings, and his offense provided plenty of run support in the 13-4 win. He's now picked up the victory in two of his last three starts, and he was able to bounce back from a loss his last time out against the Phillies when he surrendered five runs (four earned) over four innings of work.
Jul 11, 2021
Gives up five runs in loss
Pivetta (7-4) was tagged with the loss Sunday against the Phillies after allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits and two walks while fanning four across four innings.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was far from his best Sunday and it showed, as he needed 76 pitches just to complete four frames and left the game with Boston down 5-1 on the score. It's worth noting he ends the first half of the season having allowed at least three earned runs in four of his last six outings.
Jul 4, 2021
Fans 10 in win
Pivetta (7-3) fired seven scoreless innings on two hits and two walks while striking out 10, earning the win over the Athletics on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta took care of the Athletics on Sunday, striking out a season-high 10 batters in his longest outing of the season. He did not allow any extra-base hits in the game. The 28-year-old has a 4.09 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP with a team-leading 109 strikeouts in 92.1 innings. He has been very inconsistent in his last five starts, with two scoreless performances and two appearances where he allowed six runs. His next start is scheduled for Saturday against Philadelphia.
Jun 30, 2021
Hit hard Tuesday
Pivetta allowed six runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out five over 4.1 innings Tuesday against the Royals. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta had a brutal outing after tossing 6.2 no-hit innings last week against the Rays. He allowed a season-high nine base hits and has surrendered eight homers over his last four starts after giving up just five in his first 12 outings of the year. He was taken deep in the first, fourth and fifth innings and also allowed an RBI single in the second. Pivetta now owns a 4.43 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 99:40 K:BB over 85.1 innings. He's become very unpredictable and doesn't line up for a favorable matchup against the Athletics over the weekend.
Jun 24, 2021
Lifted from no-hitter
Pivetta held Tampa Bay without a hit and issued two walks while fanning eight across 6.2 innings in Thursday's 1-0 loss. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was working on a no-hitter with two outs in the seventh inning, but Boston manager Alex Cora went to the bullpen once his starter reached the 100-pitch mark in a scoreless tie. It was the deepest into a game Pivetta had pitched all season, although he had topped 100 pitches on five previous occasions. He improved his ERA to an even 4.00 for the year and boasts a 94:38 K:BB across 81 innings. His next scheduled start will come next week against Kansas City.
Jun 19, 2021
Fans six in loss
Pivetta (6-3) allowed three runs on six hits and three walks with six strikeouts in five innings in a loss to Kansas City on Friday.
ANALYSIS
A three-run home run by Adalberto Mondesi in the third inning was enough to send the right-hander to his third loss in his last four outings. Pivetta was strong over the first two months of the season, but he's now allowed 13 runs across 20.2 innings in his last four starts. Overall, the 28-year-old has a 4.36 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 86:36 K:BB across 74.1 innings. He lines up for a road start versus Tampa Bay next week.
Jun 12, 2021
Gives up six runs Saturday
Pivetta (6-2) was tagged with the loss Saturday against the Blue Jays after allowing six runs on six hits and two walks while fanning six across five innings.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta had given up just two runs in each of his last two appearances, but he was unable to display the same kind of poise on the mound against one of the strongest offenses in the American League. He's now dropped two of his last three decisions and owns a 4.28 ERA. Pivetta is scheduled to make his next start on the road against the Royals next week.
Jun 7, 2021
Falls one out short of victory
Pivetta allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out six across 4.2 innings Monday against the Marlins. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta made it through the first three innings unscathed before surrendering one run in the fourth and another in the fifth on a solo blast to center. Had he managed to record one more out, he would have qualified for the victory, but instead, Hirokazu Sawamura was credited with the win. Pivetta struggled in his last two starts to close out May (eight earned runs allowed across 11 innings), but he's back on track in June, holding the opposition to four runs while fanning 15 in 10.2 frames since.
Jun 3, 2021
Takes first loss Wednesday
Pivetta (6-1) allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out nine across six innings, taking the loss Wednesday against the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta delivered his fourth quality start, but took his first loss of the season. The Red Sox' offense provided just a single run in support of Pivetta. The 28-year-old leads Boston with six wins and has a 3.77 ERA. He has struck out nine batters in each of his last two starts and carries a 10.3 K/9. He'll look to get back in the win column Monday against the Marlins.
May 27, 2021
Settles in, remains unblemished
Pivetta (6-0) earned the victory Wednesday, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks to Atlanta. He struck out nine.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was shaky early, giving up three runs over the first two innings, but he settled in over the final four frames to remain undefeated in 2021. He was going to come back out for the seventh inning, but heavy rains fell in Boston and delayed the game nearly three hours before the teams completed nine innings. Pivetta next lines up to pitch Tuesday on the road against Houston.
May 21, 2021
Another no-decision Thursday
Pivetta did not factor into the decision in Thursday's 8-7 win over the Blue Jays. He allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out eight over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta, who entered the game 5-0 with a 3.16 ERA, wasn't at his best but pitched better than the line indicated. The Red Sox committed three errors, and the Blue Jays didn't hit many hard balls off him. It was the second straight no-decision for the right-hander, who is next scheduled to pitch Wednesday against Atlanta at Fenway Park.
May 15, 2021
Settles for no-decision Friday
Pivetta didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 4-3 win over the Angels, giving up two runs on four hits over six-plus innings. He struck out seven without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
He delivered his second straight quality start and third of the season, but Pivetta was denied his sixth win when Anthony Rendon led off the top of the seventh inning with a single to drive the right-hander from the game, and Matt Andriese subsequently let Rendon come around to score. Pivetta will take a 3.16 ERA and 42:22 K:BB through 42.2 innings into his next outing.
May 13, 2021
Back from COVID IL
The Red Sox reinstated Pivetta from the COVID-19-related injured list Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Minutes after manager Alex Cora told the media that he was hopeful Pivetta would feel well enough to start Friday's game against the Angels, the Red Sox activated the right-hander. Now in the clear after experiencing some adverse effects from his second vaccine shot earlier this week, Pivetta should face few limitations, if any, during Friday's outing. Boston optioned reliever Eduard Bazardo to Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move.
May 13, 2021
Hopeful to start Friday
Manager Alex Cora said Pivetta (illness) was feeling better Thursday, leaving the Red Sox optimistic he'll be ready to start Friday's game against the Angels, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Boston placed Pivetta on the COVID-19 injured list Wednesday after he experienced side effects of a second vaccine shot. The transaction gave Boston some extra flexibility in the short term, but the team will have to make a corresponding roster move in order to reinstate Pivetta. Assuming Pivetta is continuing to feel well Friday, he should be cleared to take the hill for the series opener.
May 12, 2021
Lands on COVID IL
Pivetta was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Wednesday while experiencing side effects from the vaccine.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old picked up the win Sunday against the Orioles with a quality start and apparently received the vaccine in the past couple days. Pivetta lined up to start Friday against the Angels, and he could return from the COVID IL to pitch if he's feeling better.
May 9, 2021
Earns fifth win
Pivetta (5-0) allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out two in six innings to earn the win against the Orioles on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta gave up a run in the bottom of the first inning Sunday, but he then retired 12 of the next 13 batters before he allowed a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. Pivetta has allowed at least two runs in five of his first seven starts, but he's picked up five wins while avoiding the loss column to begin the year. He could make his next start at home against the Angels on Friday.
May 5, 2021
Improves to 4-0
Pivetta (4-0) allowed three earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out eight across five innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta allowed four hits and two earned runs in the second inning, accounting for most of the damage against him. However, he was solid otherwise, racking up eight strikeouts on 18 called strikes and 10 swinging strikes across 100 total pitches against one of the weakest lineups in the league. He also earned his fourth win of the campaign, while also maintaining a 3.23 ERA with a 33:19 K:BB across 30.2 innings.
Apr 28, 2021
Fans seven in win
Pivetta (3-0) pitched five shutout innings, allowing a hit and three walks with seven strikeouts to earn the win Wednesday versus the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was effective once again. It was a necessary strong outing, as Mets ace Jacob deGrom only allowed one run in the contest. The 28-year-old Pivetta has a 2.81 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 25:17 K:BB across 25.2 innings in five starts. While the free passes are a little concerning, he's done well to limit the damage from issuing so many walks. The right-hander's next start is expected to be Tuesday versus the lowly Tigers.
Apr 23, 2021
Six effective innings
Pivetta allowed two earned runs on one hit and three walks while striking out four across six innings Thursday against the Mariners. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta held the Mariners without a hit through 5.2 innings and had surrendered only one walk in that span. However, he unraveled before getting his final out, walking two and surrendering a game-tying double. Even so, it was an encouraging outing for Pivetta, as he matched his longest start of the season and needed only 86 pitches to record 18 outs. He now has a 3.48 ERA across 20.2 innings to begin the campaign, but will need to improve on his 18:14 K:BB to maintain those results. Pivetta is projected to draw his next turn through the rotation Wednesday at the Mets.
Apr 18, 2021
Shows command issues Saturday
Pivetta allowed two runs on four hits and four walks while fanning three across 3.2 innings Saturday against the White Sox. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta entered Saturday's start spotting a 11:7 K:BB through his first 11 innings, and it seems the command issues are here to stay with the right-hander. He has now walked at least three in each of his first three outings of the season and his command issues might be a problem in the long run. It's still early in the season, but he owns a 4.1 BB/9 thus far and that'd be a career-worst mark for him.
Apr 17, 2021
Starting Saturday
Pivetta will start Saturday against the White Sox, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta's scheduled start Friday was rained out, and he will take the mound for Saturday's late afternoon contest. The right-hander's won his first two starts, benefitting from pitching when the Red Sox's hitters broke out after being swept by the Orioles in the opening series of the season.
Apr 16, 2021
Friday's game postponed
Pivetta and the Red Sox won't play the White Sox on Friday since the game was postponed due to inclement weather.
ANALYSIS
Boston is receiving some heavy snow Friday, leading to the postponement. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Sunday. The Red Sox have yet to officially announce their updated pitching plans, but Pivetta figures to take the mound Saturday.
Apr 11, 2021
Whiffs seven in win
Pivetta (2-0) allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out seven in six innings to earn the win against the Orioles on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta began Sunday's game by tossing three scoreless frames but faltered slightly in his final three innings. Although the Orioles made a push in the final few innings Sunday, Pivetta picked up his second win in as many starts due to a strong offensive showing by Boston. The right-hander has posted a 3.27 ERA and 1.45 WHIP with 11 strikeouts in 11 innings to begin the season. Pivetta should make his third start of the year at home against the White Sox on Friday.
Apr 6, 2021
Cruises to easy win
Pivetta (1-0) picked up the win in Monday's 11-2 rout of the Rays, allowing two hits and four walks over five scoreless innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander threw only 52 of 92 pitches for strikes, but Pivetta was able to avoid any damage despite his control issues and got more than enough support from Boston's bats. He'll look to build on a successful Red Sox debut in his next scheduled start Sunday in Baltimore.
Mar 22, 2021
Falls behind counts
Pivetta allowed six runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three over four innings in Sunday's spring game against the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta lamented his fastball command when speaking with Christopher Smith of MassLive.com. "Got behind a lot of guys. It's never fun to pitch behind (in the count). So that was a bit of a negative today but made some good pitches, got some weak contact," said Pivetta. The right-hander had been sharp during his first three Grapefruit League outings before falling victim to wavering command Sunday. Pivetta will get two more spring starts to clean up whatever issues were presented Sunday.
Mar 16, 2021
Throws four innings
Pivetta allowed four hits and one walk while striking out four over four innings in Monday's spring game against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta had some early-game issues, giving up hits to the first two batters and a run in the first inning. Aside from that, he worked around any traffic encountered over the final three innings. Pivetta has pitched well during the Grapefruit League, allowing three runs in nine innings, and is securing his spot in the rotation.
Mar 10, 2021
Locking in rotation spot
Pivetta allowed one run on three hits and struck out three over three innings in Tuesday's spring game against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta, the frontrunner for the No. 5 spot in the rotation, has allowed two runs in five innings over two Grapefruit League starts. He lamented to Christopher Smith of MassLive.com about the inconsistency of his curveball, but he was able to get himself back into counts and didn't allow much hard contact. Boston manager Alex Cora described the right-hander's outing as a positive in a game the Red Sox lost 11-3.
Mar 4, 2021
Makes spring debut
Pivetta allowed one run on one hit while striking out one over two innings in Wednesday's game against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta allowed a wind-blown home run to Mitch Garver in the first inning but was sharp otherwise in retiring six of eight in the first step to winning a spot in the rotation. The right-hander prepared for this opportunity during the offseason and could be the fourth or fifth starter.
Feb 28, 2021
Starting Wednesday
Pivetta will start against Minnesota on Wednesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta is one of six pitchers that will start games the first week of spring games, as the Red Sox will work a six-man rotation early in camp. They have not committed to the six-man rotation for the regular season, so Pivetta is not assured of a spot in the rotation. However, that he's out of minor-league options appears he will make the Opening Day roster.
Feb 24, 2021
Faces batters
Pivetta threw an inning against teammates Tuesday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta, who is battling for a rotation spot, featured a wicked slider that fooled Rafael Devers. "He did a good job toward the end of last season. He did a good job at the alternate [training] site and he just wants to keep improving. And this is a guy we trust," said manager Alex Cora. Pivetta had a nice two-start run at the end of 2020, allowing two runs and striking out 13 over 10 innings, and the Red Sox are excited about the right-hander they acquired from Philadelphia in 2020.
Feb 21, 2021
No lock for rotation
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Pivetta is not a lock to make the rotation, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta, who was acquired from the Phillies in 2020, started two games late last season, allowing two runs on eight hits in 10 innings while striking out 13. He's squarely in the mix for the fifth starter's job -- or sixth if Boston goes with a six-man rotation early -- along with Tanner Houck, Matt Andriese, and possibly Rule 5 pick Garrett Whitlock.
Sep 28, 2020
Closes out season with win
Pivetta (2-0) allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out five over five innings in a win over the Braves on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The Boston rotation was brutal all season long, but Pivetta provided a glimmer of hope for the future with his performance after getting called up from the alternate site. Pivetta allowed just two earned runs on eight hits while posting a 13:5 K:BB in his two starts with the Red Sox (10 innings). He had a 15.88 ERA in his first three appearances before coming over from Philadelphia in an August trade.
Sep 23, 2020
Receives second start
Pivetta will start the Red Sox's season finale Sunday in Atlanta, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta provided a much-needed lift to the Boston rotation in his team debut Tuesday, striking out eight over five innings of one-run ball to pick up a win over the Orioles. The Red Sox are eager to evaluate Pivetta for a spot in the 2021 rotation, so it's no surprise that he'll get the opportunity to try and build on his strong outing this weekend. While Pivetta lines up for a stiff test against baseball's best offense (123 wRC+), the Braves could be resting several lineup regulars Sunday if the team is already locked into its spot in the National League playoffs.
Sep 23, 2020
Earns win in Red Sox debut
Pivetta (1-0) earned the win Tuesday against the Orioles. He allowed one run on four hits and three walks while fanning eight across five innings.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was recalled ahead of Tuesday's start and impressed in his debut with the Red Sox, fanning eight and looking dominant on the mound most of the time. The Red Sox are already out of contention but they might want to check what they have in Pivetta, so he could be in line to pitch in the team's season finale Sunday against Atlanta.
Sep 22, 2020
Officially recalled
Pivetta was recalled by the Red Sox ahead of his start Tuesday against the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta will make his debut with the Red Sox on Tuesday while also making his first start of 2020. The right-hander struggled during game action out of the bullpen with the Phillies earlier this year, but he's impressed at the Red Sox's alternate training site. If he impresses Tuesday, he could pitch in the team's season finale against Atlanta on Sunday as well.
Sep 20, 2020
Starting Tuesday
Pivetta will start Tuesday's game against the Orioles, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta will debut with the Red Sox at home Tuesday after getting off to a bit of a rough start with the Phillies this season. The right-hander made three relief appearances earlier in the year, recording a 15.88 ERA and 1.94 WHIP over 5.2 innings. Pivetta's strikeout rate has dropped over the past two seasons, and he hasn't thrown more than 44 pitches in any of his outings in 2020.
Sep 17, 2020
Likely to join rotation next week
Manager Ron Roenicke said that he expects Pivetta to be recalled from the Red Sox's alternate site and join the rotation at some point next week, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Specifically, Roenicke suggested that Pivetta would be a strong possibility to start Tuesday's game against the Orioles, which would set the right-hander up for another outing in the Sept. 27 season finale in Atlanta, assuming Boston sticks with a five-man rotation. Given the infrequency of pitchers receiving two starts in a given week -- especially at the end of the season -- Pivetta could make for a sneaky pickup in AL-only or deeper mixed leagues. Fantasy managers looking to roster Pivetta should recognize the risk he carries in the ratio categories (career 5.50 ERA, 1.43 WHIP), but he could really move the needle in the strikeout category (career 24.4 K%) if he's able to work deep enough into his starts.
Aug 30, 2020
Stretching out at alternate camp
Pivetta is being stretched out at the alternate training camp site, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta hasn't pitched as a starter for a while, so the Red Sox will take time to build up the right-hander's pitch count and innings. With Boston's starting rotation in shambles, the Red Sox need immediate support, but Pivetta will need at least a couple of weeks to be extended.

Evaluated at alternate site
Pivetta will stay at the alternate training site in Pawtucket while the team assesses how he can help the Red Sox in 2020, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta pitched in relief for the Phillies in 2020 before Boston acquired him, but he was starter in Philadelphia prior to 2020. The Red Sox have a desperate need for starting pitching, and it looks like they are going to evaluate the right-hander in Pawtucket for possible use in the rotation. "It's getting to know him, talking about what he thinks he needs to progress," Boston manager Ron Roenicke said. "We want him as a starter and he wants to start. [GM] Chaim [Bloom] and I talked this morning and we want to get to know him first before we figure out does he come join us and jump right in the rotation, or is it better for him to stay there for a little bit and work on some things?" Pivetta is 18-28 with a 5.42 ERA over a career 71 starts.

Headed to Red Sox
Pivetta was traded from the Phillies to the Red Sox on Friday in exchange for Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was recently sent to the Phillies' alternate training site, but he'll now get a fresh start with a new organization. The right-hander wasn't able to put things together to begin the season as he posted a 15.88 ERA and 1.94 WHIP over 5.2 innings in three relief appearances. While the Red Sox no longer have two of their top bullpen arms, it's unclear what kind of role Pivetta could see if he reaches the major-league level again in 2020.

Optioned off roster
Pivetta was optioned off the Phillies' active roster Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta failed to earn a rotation spot this summer and now doesn't have a bullpen job either. It's not hard to see who, as he's allowed 10 runs in 5.2 innings of work across three relief appearances this season. He'll need to figure things out at the Phillies' alternate training site if he's to earn another chance this season, and that chance will likely be in a low-leverage relief role.

Fails to earn rotation spot
Pivetta won't start any of the Phillies' first five games, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta lines up as the Phillies' top alternative should the team need an additional starter, at least until top prospect Spencer Howard is deemed ready to go. He could have had a chance to earn at least one start early with Zach Eflin battling back spasms throughout camp, but Eflin has been deemed ready to go, so Pivetta will head to the bullpen for now.

Still in contention for starts
Pivetta remains in the rotation conversation after throwing four scoreless innings in an intrasquad game Thursday without allowing a single hit, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta and Vince Velasquez are the primary competitors for the Phillies' final rotation spot this season, with both earning praise in recent days after impressing in intrasquad action. It's possible both pitchers open in the rotation, as there are questions surrounding both Zach Eflin's back spasms and Zack Wheeler's anticipated paternity leave. It's also possible neither pitcher is in the rotation for long, as the team's top pitching prospect Spencer Howard has looked good in camp as well and is expected to push for opportunities early in the season.

May start in bullpen
Pivetta could be on the outside looking in for the final spot in the starting rotation, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.
ANALYSIS
Vince Velasquez has put on a strong performance early in summer training and appears to have the upper hand with just over a week before Opening Day. Regardless, Pivetta will remain stretched out, as the protocols for any player who potentially has COVID-19 could quickly open up a spot in the rotation. Zack Wheeler is also expected to miss some time early in the season while on paternity leave, so at least some starting chances will be available.

Rotation spot unlikely
Pivetta's shot at a rotation spot could take a hit with a shortened schedule, as that could lead to the Phillies promoting Spencer Howard for the start of the season, Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta was already seemingly an underdog in a battle with Vince Velasquez and Ranger Suarez for the Phillies' final rotation spot. His 8.22 ERA and 1.83 WHIP in 7.2 spring innings didn't exactly help his case. If Howard is indeed given the job from the start of the campaign, all three of those pitchers would be consigned to a bullpen role (if they even start the campaign in the majors). Pivetta would need at least one and possibly multiple injuries ahead of him if he's to end up in a fantasy-relevant role.

Hoping to feature changeup
Pivetta is hoping to feature a changeup this season, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Pivetta is hardly the only pitcher looking to improve his changeup this spring, and there's no guarantee he'll be successful, but for those looking for a reason to buy back in on last year's popular sleeper pick, this is potentially something to latch onto. Pivetta threw just 15 changeups in 93.2 innings last season while struggling to a 5.38 ERA. The new pitch didn't lead to much success in his first outing of the spring against the Tigers on Saturday, as he allowed three runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of work.

Starting spring opener
Pivetta will start the Phillies' Grapefruit League opener Saturday against the Tigers, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
A popular sleeper pick this time last season due to some promising peripherals, Pivetta had a disaster of a 2019 campaign, experiencing demotions both to the minors and to the bullpen while struggling to a 5.38 ERA. The Phillies didn't make any additions to their shaky rotation over the offseason, so Pivetta enters camp as a starter again and appears to be competing with Vince Velasquez for the final spot in the rotation. Highly-rated prospect Spencer Howard (knee) looms to take that spot at some point, however, and could enter the conversation fairly early in the year.
