Gets three years, $30M from Atlanta
Lopez signed a three-year, $30 million contract with Atlanta on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Atlanta had already re-signed Pierce Johnson and Joe Jimenez and traded for Aaron Bummer and they've now brought in Lopez to reinforce their bullpen. Lopez made a full-time move to relief in 2022 and has produced a 3.02 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 146:45 K:BB over 131.1 innings covering the last two seasons. He will be in line to serve in a setup role ahead of Raisel Iglesias with Atlanta.

Snags win Saturday
Lopez (3-7) struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the win Saturday over the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Lopez kept the game close in the top of the eighth inning, allowing the Guardians to pull ahead in their half of the frame. This was Lopez's seventh outing with Cleveland, and he's posted 6.2 scoreless innings with a 6:3 K:BB while adding three holds in a setup role. When accounting for his time with the Angels and White Sox earlier in the year, he's pitched to a 3.50 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 77:33 K:BB with six saves and 17 holds over 61.2 innings.
Aug 31, 2023
Added by Cleveland via waivers
Lopez was claimed off waivers by the Guardians on Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Cleveland scooped up Lopez, Matt Moore and Lucas Giolito from the Angels via waivers, taking on their salaries but not having to give up any players in the process. Lopez has posted a 3.93 ERA and 71:30 K:BB over 55 relief innings for the White Sox and Angels this season. He will give the Guardians a capable setup man ahead of closer Emmanuel Clase.
Aug 29, 2023
Placed on waivers Tuesday
The Angels placed Lopez on waivers Tuesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Lopez has pitched to a solid 2.31 ERA and 19:6 K:BB in 11.2 innings since being acquired him from the White Sox in late July, but the Angels have made him available to other teams prior to the Sept. 1 postseason eligibility deadline. Lucas Giolito, Matt Moore, Hunter Renfroe and Grandal Grichuk were also waived Tuesday in an attempted salary dump.

Notches second save as Angel
Lopez earned a save over the Rays in the first game of a twin bill Saturday, allowing one hit and striking out two batters over one scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
Angels closer Carlos Estevez has struggled of late, though his lack of usage in a save situation in the matinee of the doubleheader was probably due to him throwing 43 pitches over 1.2 frames while taking the loss Friday. Lopez thus assumed closer duties with Los Angeles up a run in the ninth inning, and he worked around a leadoff single to secure the save. It was his second save in nine games since joining the Angels on July 26, and he's given up only two runs while posting a 16:3 K:BB across 9.2 frames during that stretch. There's no indication that Estevez has lost his closing role, but Lopez has pitched well enough since joining the team to take over ninth-inning duties if manager Phil Nevin does eventually decide to go in a different direction.

Activated from bereavement list
Lopez was activated Friday from the bereavement list, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
Lopez will be available again out of the Angels' bullpen Friday night against the Astros after spending four days away from the team following a death in his family. Zack Weiss was optioned out in a corresponding roster move.
Aug 6, 2023
Moves to bereavement list
Lopez (personal) was placed on the bereavement list Sunday, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Lopez recently had a death in the family, so he'll step away from the team for a few days. Players can be on the bereavement list for 3-to-7 days, so the right-hander should be back with the Angels sometime this week.
Aug 1, 2023
Notches first save since trade
Lopez earned a save over Atlanta on Monday, walking two batters and striking out three over 1.2 scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
Lopez was acquired in a trade with the White Sox last week and tossed 1.1 scoreless frames in his Angels debut Saturday. The right-hander was summoned with one out in the eighth inning Monday and got the remaining five outs for Los Angeles to pick up his fifth save of the campaign and his first since May 5, when he was still with Chicago. Lopez's opportunity to close Monday was a consequence of Carlos Estevez tossing 34 pitches the day before. Estevez is likely to get the majority of the save chances for the Angels moving forward, so fantasy managers hunting saves need not rush to the waiver wire to grab Lopez.
Jul 27, 2023
Traded to Angels
The White Sox traded Lopez and Lucas Giolito to the Angels on Wednesday in exchange for Edgar Quero and Ky Bush, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Lopez has taken a noticeable step back from his 2022 campaign, posting a 4.29 ERA and 1.31 WHIP through 42 innings in Chicago this season. He'll now help sure up the Angels' bullpen and likely serve primarily in middle relief due to consistency issues.
Jun 30, 2023
Remains inconsistent
Lopez has a 6.43 ERA and 1.29 WHIP across his last seven appearances while also picking up one win, one hold, one loss and one blown save.
ANALYSIS
Lopez has made seven appearances since Liam Hendriks (elbow) last took the mound, four of which have been scoreless. He's allowed multiple runs on two other occasions and has particularly struggled with his control by walking four batters across seven frames. Lopez continues to pitch late in games, though most of his appearances in recent weeks have come with the White Sox losing. Between his inconsistent success and usage, a return to regular save chances doesn't seem likely for Lopez in the near future.
May 14, 2023
More low-leverage usage
Lopez allowed one earned run on two hits while striking out one across 0.2 innings in Saturday's game against the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Lopez entered the game in the seventh inning with the task of protecting a one-run lead. He allowed a pair of singles prior to being pulled but was charged with a run after Joe Kelly allowed an inherited runner to score. Lopez has now allowed at least one earned run in four of his last six appearances, during which he's also tallied one save while blowing two opportunities and also taking a loss. Meanwhile, Kendall Graveman has picked up each of the White Sox's last two saves. That combination certainly suggests Lopez isn't currently an option in the mix to serve as the team's closer.
May 10, 2023
Serves as setup man
Lopez struck out one and did not allow a baserunner in a scoreless eighth inning Tuesday against the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Lopez protected a two-run lead while facing the heart of the Royals' lineup. It's unclear whether he was purposefully used in the highest-leverage situation in the game, or if he has been demoted to a setup role. The latter would certainly be justified, as Lopez has a 7.63 ERA with four blown saves across 16 appearances to start the season. Kendall Graveman picked up the save.
May 6, 2023
Nails down fourth save
Lopez walked one and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to record his fourth save of the season in a 5-4 win over the Reds.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander appears to be fully over the biceps soreness he dealt with earlier in the week, as Lopez pitched for a second straight day and reached 100 mph with six of his 12 pitches. He's struggled as the White Sox closer so far, blowing half of his eight save chances while posting an 8.16 ERA and 1.60 WHIP despite a 32.8 percent strikeout rate, but with Liam Hendriks (illness) having begun a rehab assignment, Lopez could be back in a setup role before the end of the month.
May 4, 2023
Blows fourth save
Lopez (biceps) blew the save Thursday against the Twins. He allowed one run on one hit while striking out one over one inning.
ANALYSIS
Lopez had been dealing with bicep fatigue since exiting Sunday's outing due to the issue but was cleared for action Thursday and ended up toeing the rubber in the eighth inning. Though Lopez allowed just one hit in his only frame of work, it was a costly one, as Byron Buxton hit a solo home run to equalize the score at two. The 29-year-old has been off to a poor start to 2023, holding an 8.78 ERA to pair with an 0-2 record while converting on just three of seven save attempts. The only saving grace for Lopez has been his strikeout ability, fanning 20 in 13.1 innings. With Liam Hendriks (illness) on the 15-day injured list, Lopez could still see some opportunities moving forward, though Kenyan Middleton could push him for temporary closing duties given Lopez's struggles.
May 4, 2023
Hopes to pitch Thursday
Lopez (biceps) is feeling better and hopes to be available to pitch for the White Sox on Thursday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Lopez hasn't pitched since exiting an appearance Sunday with right biceps fatigue, but he's on the mend. The reliever is just 3-for-6 in save chances this season and has blown each of his last two. Even if Lopez is available Thursday, the White Sox might look in another direction if a save opportunity presents itself.
May 2, 2023
Avoiding IL
Testing on Lopez's right biceps came back negative and he's expected to avoid an injured list stint for the time being, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Lopez had to exit an appearance Sunday versus the Rays due to biceps fatigue, but it sounds like he's avoided anything serious. He will be shut down for a couple days but could conceivably be available to pitch later this week.
Apr 30, 2023
Dealing with bicep issue
Lopez was removed from Sunday's appearance against the Rays due to fatigue in his bicep, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Lopez tossed 3.1 scoreless innings over his last three appearances but struggled during Sunday's outing, allowing three runs on two hits and a walk while failing to strike out a batter in one-third of an inning. It's unclear whether his bicep issue will force him to miss additional time, but he'll at least be able to recover Monday before the White Sox begin a three-game series against Minnesota.
Apr 22, 2023
Ugly blown save against Tampa Bay
Lopez blew the save and took the loss Friday against the Rays, giving up a game-winning home run to Brandon Lowe. However, White Sox manager Pedro Grifol after the game said he still has confidence in Lopez, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It was an ugly outing for Lopez as he gave up two home runs and three hits without recording an out in the 7-6 loss. While Lopez has the confidence of his manager for now, he may not have a firm grip on the job since he wasn't pitching especially well before this outing. Lopez entered the game with a 6.23 ERA and a blown save, and his ERA ballooned to 9.35 after a second blow save in five chances. However, he does have a 15:5 K:BB ratio in 8.2 innings, so there's still signs he could improve.
Apr 19, 2023
Notches third save
Lopez struck out three batters in 1.1 perfect innings to record his third save of the season in a 3-0 win over the Phillies during the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander wrapped up a combined one-hit shutout for the White Sox, topping out at 99.8 mph with his fastball on his final pitch as he struck out Trea Turner. Lopez stumbled out of the gate this season but he appears to be finding his footing, fanning multiple batters in five of his last six appearances, and his 6.23 ERA through 8.2 innings isn't reflected in his 15:5 K:BB. With Liam Hendriks (illness) still lacking a target date for his return, Lopez will continue to hold down the fort in the ninth inning for Chicago.
Apr 15, 2023
Handed first loss
Lopez (0-1) allowed two earned runs on two hits and a walk to take the loss Friday against the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Lopez entered the game in the seventh inning with one out and runners on first and second. He retired the first batter he faced without incident but then gave up a hit, walk and double in succession to turn a three-run lead into a one-run deficit. Lopez is the only White Sox pitcher to have recorded a save this season, but he's now allowed at least one earned run in four of his seven appearances. That could lead manager Pedro Grifol to rethink his usage of Lopez moving forward.
Apr 10, 2023
Tallies second save
Lopez picked up the save in Monday's 4-3 victory over the Twins. He allowed zero runs on zero hits and zero walks while striking out three over 1.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Lopez secured his second save of the 2023 campaign without much difficulty. He set the side down in order by striking out a pair and inducing a groundout to third base. After allowing three runs over his first 2.1 frames of work, it was a good sign to see the reliever navigate the ninth inning seamlessly Monday afternoon.
Apr 3, 2023
Struggles in non-save situation
Lopez allowed two earned runs on two hits and two walks while striking out one across one inning in Sunday's 6-3 win against the Astros. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Lopez entered the game in the ninth inning with the White Sox up by five runs. He struggled with his control by walking the first two batters he faced before allowing a pair of singles to account for the damage. Lopez appears to be the preferred option to close out games in Chicago, but he has now allowed three earned runs across his first two innings of work.
Mar 31, 2023
Earns save in season opener
Lopez picked up the save in Thursday's 3-2 victory over Houston. He allowed one run on one hit and one walk while striking out one over one inning.
ANALYSIS
With Liam Hendriks (illness) opening the season on the injured list, fantasy managers have been speculating on who would get the first crack at a save for the White Sox. Lopez became the answer to that question Thursday, as he was called upon in the ninth inning and was able to close things out despite giving up a solo home run to Yordan Alvarez and a walk to Kyle Tucker. Kendall Graveman did well as the setup man, pitching a scoreless ninth inning, and he could certainly see some closing opportunities as well. It appears that Lopez will at least be a consideration, though, until Hendriks is able to return.
Mar 18, 2023
Could be part of committee
Lopez is set to serve as a high-leverage arm for the White Sox this season, Jack Magruder of MLB.com reports. "He's a special talent, and he's also a special kid," said manager Pedro Grifol. "He likes the moment. He likes the stage."
ANALYSIS
Grifol swooned about how special he thinks Lopez is, having strategized against him for the past several years as the Royals' bench coach from 2020-22. The skipper indicated that bullpen usage will be determined by game situations, not a particular inning designation, so it sounds like Lopez will enter the season as part of a saves committee along with Kendall Graveman.
Jan 13, 2023
Avoids arbitration with White Sox
Lopez signed a one-year contract with the White Sox on Friday to avoid arbitration, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Lopez found his groove as a full-time reliever in 2022, holding a 2.76 ERA and 63:11 K:BB over 65.1 innings. He was one of the team's most trusted relievers by the end of the season and could be in the mix for saves in 2023 while Liam Hendriks (cancer) recovers.
Aug 9, 2022
Activated for Game 2
Lopez (back) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list ahead of Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Royals, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Lopez suffered the injury during his first appearance after the All-Star break, but he's now been cleared to rejoin Chicago's active roster. The 28-year-old has been a key bullpen piece for the White Sox this year with a 2.98 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 44:8 K:BB across 42.1 innings.
Aug 4, 2022
Ramping up
Lopez (back) threw a bullpen session Wednesday and will throw a sim game over the weekend, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Lopez was placed on the injured list July 28, but the move was retroactive to July 25. It was hoped that he would have only a minimum stint, and this ramp-up schedule suggests he could be activated when first eligible Tuesday. Lopez has been a key part of the White Sox's bullpen, maintaining a 2.98 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 44:8 K:BB across 42.1 innings for the season.
Jul 31, 2022
Eyeing minimum-length IL stint
Lopez (back) said Sunday that he's making good progress and expects to return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible Aug. 9, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Lopez's lower-back strain forced him to the IL on Thursday, but he already resumed throwing Saturday after two doctors quickly determined he wouldn't require surgery to address the injury. The right-hander has converted to a full-time relief role in 2022 and has generated a 2.98 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in 42.1 innings while collecting four wins and four holds.
Jul 28, 2022
Placed on injured list
Lopez was placed on the 15-day injured list with a lower back strain Thursday, retroactive to July 25.
ANALYSIS
Lopez's back injury has kept him off the mound since Saturday, and he'll be sidelined for at least another week and a half after being diagnosed with a strain. It's not yet clear when the White Sox expect the right-hander will return to action.
Jul 27, 2022
Dealing with back issue
Lopez hasn't pitched since Saturday while managing a back injury, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Lopez surrendered a run over one-third of an inning and was charged with a blown save Saturday, though it's unclear if that's when the back issue first surfaced. The White Sox have a scheduled day off Thursday, and it's unclear if the 31-year-old, who has a 3.61 ERA across 77.1 innings this year, will be available Friday versus the A's.
Jun 11, 2022
Solid in opener role
Lopez allowed a hit while striking out three batters over two shutout frames as the opener during Friday's win over the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Lopez coughed up a single to Sam Huff in the second inning but was otherwise perfect in his short outing. He lowered his season ERA to 3.96 through 25 frames. It was the first time that he completed at least two innings since May 26.
Jun 10, 2022
Serving as opener
Lopez will serve as the opener Friday against the Rangers, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Lopez has 96 career major-league starts to his name, but don't expect him to pitch particularly deep in this contest even though he's listed as the starter. He's topped out at two innings so far this season and is unlikely to throw any more than that Friday before handing the ball to Davis Martin.
May 19, 2022
Suffers first loss
Lopez (4-1) allowed two earned runs on two hits and no walks while striking out one across two innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Lopez entered the game in the sixth inning with the score tied at two. He immediately ran into trouble, surrendering a single, triple and sacrifice fly to account for his two earned runs. Lopez had turned in six scoreless appearances -- spanning 6.1 innings -- prior to Wednesday's loss, also picking up two wins and a hold in that span. For the season, Lopez has maintained a 4.02 ERA with a 1.09 WHIP across 15.2 frames.
May 16, 2022
Moves past back issue
Lopez (back) made a pair of relief appearances during the White Sox's series with the Yankees over the weekend, striking out three over two scoreless frames while allowing one hit and walking none.
ANALYSIS
Lopez wasn't available for a few days after suffering from lower-back tightness during his prior relief appearance May 9 against the Guardians, but he looks to be back to full strength heading into the White Sox's eight-game week.
May 11, 2022
Playing catch Wednesday
Lopez (back) will play catch from 90 feet Wednesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Lopez exited Monday's game against the Guardians with lower-back tightness, but his pain is subsiding ahead of Wednesday's throwing session. Assuming he feels good after playing catch, the White Sox hope Lopez will be able to resume a normal routine in 2-to-3 days.
May 10, 2022
Exits with trainer
Lopez left Monday night's game against the Gurdians with lower back tightness, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Lopez will be considered day-to-day until further notice. He gave up a hit in a scoreless inning prior to departing.
May 8, 2022
Picks up fourth win
Lopez (4-0) allowed three hits and struck out one across two scoreless innings to earn the win Saturday against the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Lopez entered the game in the eighth inning and had a relatively smooth start to his appearance. However, he allowed two runners to reach scoring position in the ninth frame before striking out Bobby Dalbec and forcing Trevor Story to pop out to escape the jam. Lopez has pitched exclusively out of the bullpen this season and has a 4.22 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with a 7:4 K:BB across 10.2 innings.
May 4, 2022
Earns win in relief
Lopez (3-0) earned the win, striking out one in a scoreless inning during a 3-1 victory Tuesday over the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Lopez entered the game with a man on first and no outs in the fifth inning, getting a double-play ball and recording a strikeout to complete the inning. Despite his 3-0 record, Lopez has been inconsistent in the early going. In four of his outings, he's retired every batter he's faced but in the other three, he's allowed at least a run on multiple hits and one or more walks. Cumulatively, he has a 5.40 ERA and 1.20 WHIP.
Apr 10, 2022
Working as reliever
Manager Tony La Russa said Sunday that Lopez will work out of the bullpen for the time being, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Vince Velasquez is Chicago's No. 5 starter to open the campaign with Lance Lynn (knee) out, and Lopez will remain in relief for now despite the fact Lucas Giolito is headed to the injured list after suffering an abdominal strain Opening Day. Lopez is likely to receive some starts at some point this season, but they apparently won't be coming in the immediate future.
Mar 22, 2022
Gets $525,000 raise
Lopez and the White Sox agreed Tuesday on a one-year, $2.625 million contract to avoid arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Lopez was productive over his 20 appearances (nine starts) in 2021, finishing with a 3.55 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 55:13 K:BB across 57.2 innings. However, because he wasn't a full-time member of the rotation last season like he was in 2020, Lopez will get a modest raise of $525,000 in his penultimate arbitration year. Lopez may have to settle for a long-relief role to begin 2022 if all of Lance Lynn, Lucas Giolito, Dylan Cease, Dallas Keuchel and Michael Kopech are deemed ready to go for Opening Day.
Oct 4, 2021
Charged with loss Sunday
Lopez (4-4) allowed three runs on three hits and a walk in a third of an inning to take the loss against the Tigers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Lopez entered Sunday's game to preserve a tie in the top of the ninth inning, but he gave up a home run to lead off the frame before allowing two more runs to come across prior to his removal. The right-hander allowed at least two runs in five of his last six outings of the regular season, and he'll likely pitch out of the bullpen during the playoffs.
Sep 29, 2021
Earns easy win Tuesday
Lopez (4-3) allowed one run on two hits while striking out four over six innings as he got the win over the Reds on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Outside of a fifth-inning home run from Eugenio Suarez, Lopez held the Reds in check after allowing just one other hit and not walking a batter. Tuesday was his first win since Aug. 27 and his first time going more than five innings all year. Despite making nine starts this year, Lopez will likely be used out of the bullpen in the postseason unless it's an emergency situation. The 27-year-old has had a fantastic bounceback season with a 2.98 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 55:12 K:BB over 57.1 innings.
Sep 23, 2021
Lifted after 3.1 frames
Lopez allowed two runs on four hits and no walks while striking out four across 3.1 innings during the front end of Thursday's twin bill against Cleveland. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
It was yet another rough outing for Lopez, who managed to quiet Cleveland's bats over the first two frames. He eventually was hurt by the long ball, surrendering a solo homer to Bobby Bradley in third and solo shot to Austin Hedges in the fourth. That would be the end of the 65-pitch day for the right-hander, whose offense went on a power surge to secure the team's victory. Lopez is expected to remain in the rotation for another turn, which tentatively lines up at home next week against the Reds.
Sep 22, 2021
Wednesday's game called off
Lopez and the White Sox won't play Wednesday against the Tigers after the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Wednesday's contest will be made up Monday. The White Sox haven't yet revealed their updated rotation plans, but it wouldn't be surprising to see Lopez pitch in one of the team's games against Cleveland this weekend.
Sep 16, 2021
Falters versus Angels
Lopez (3-3) gave up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and a walk over four innings Thursday to take the loss against the Angels. He had seven strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
The seven strikeouts matched his season high, but Lopez was otherwise ineffective in what was his worst start since joining the rotation back on Aug. 11. He gave up a pair of two-run homers to the light-hitting Luis Rengifo and Jose Rojas, and he needed 81 pitches to get 12 outs. Chicago is going with a six-man rotation for the rest of the regular season, so Lopez is scheduled to face the Tigers on the road next week. He'll try to snap a skid of four straight starts without a victory.
Sep 11, 2021
Sticking in six-man rotation
The White Sox are expected to use a six-man rotation over the rest of the season, which will allow Lopez to make a few more starts, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The goal will be to give Carlos Rodon extended rest between starts in advance of the postseason. Lopez, who lines up to start Thursday against the Angels, has a 3.00 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 18 strikeouts in 24 innings as a starter this season.
Sep 9, 2021
Takes second loss
Lopez (3-2) was charged with the loss Thursday against the A's after allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out two across five innings.
ANALYSIS
It wasn't his best outing, but Lopez held things in check enough to give the White Sox a chance. Unfortunately, he failed to receive run support from his teammates while also dealing with defensive woes. The right-hander is likely to recieve another chance in the rotation next week with Lucas Giolito (hamstring) and Lance Lynn (knee) on the injured list. Across 16 appearances (six starts), Lopez is sporting a 2.05 ERA and 0.84 WHIP.
Sep 6, 2021
Draws another start
Lopez is scheduled to start Thursday's game against the Athletics in Oakland, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
With Lucas Giolito (hamstring) and Lance Lynn (knee) on the injured list and Carlos Rodon's (general soreness) next start in flux, Lopez will draw a second straight turn through the rotation in what will be his sixth start of the season with Chicago. Over his previous five starts, Lopez has submitted a 3.32 ERA while striking out 16 and holding opposing batters to a .200 average in 19 innings.
Sep 5, 2021
Hurls four innings in no-decistion
Lopez did not factor in the decision against Kansas City on Saturday, allowing three runs on three hits and one walk over four innings. He struck out one batter.
ANALYSIS
Lopez entered the contest fresh off five perfect relief innings his last time out, but he was much less effective Saturday. The right-hander was given an early 6-0 lead but gave half of the lead back in the third frame, with two runs coming on a long ball by Salvador Perez. Lopez's ERA rose to a still-superb 2.08, and there's a chance that he could make another start depending on the status of Lucas Giolito, who is currently dealing with a hamstring injury. if Giolito is able to come back in time for his next start, Lopez will likely return to the bullpen.
Sep 1, 2021
Entering rotation Saturday
White Sox manager Tony La Russa said Lopez will start Saturday's game against the Royals, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
After striking out seven in five perfect frames last Friday against the Cubs in his return to the bullpen, Lopez will step back into the rotation during the upcoming weekend as a replacement for Lance Lynn (knee), who was placed on the injured list Tuesday. Lynn is only expected to miss one turn through the rotation, but Lopez could have the opportunity to pick up another start after Saturday if Lucas Giolito is slow to recover from the hamstring injury he sustained Tuesday.
Aug 28, 2021
Throws five perfect relief innings
Lopez (3-1) earned the win Friday over the Cubs. He threw five perfect innings and struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander has bounced between the bullpen and the rotation this season. Lopez provided excellent length in a relief assignment after starter Dallas Keuchel was shelled for six runs (five earned) in the first inning of Friday's 17-13 crosstown slugfest. Through 34 innings, Lopez has a 1.59 ERA, 0.71 WHIP and 37:7 K:BB. He still threw just 59 pitches (40 strikes), but the 27-year-old has been an effective innings-eater in the bullpen while holding his own in four starts this year, as he's yet to allow more than three runs in any appearance.
Aug 22, 2021
Yields three runs in loss
Lopez (2-1) allowed three runs on six hits over four innings Sunday, striking out four and taking a loss against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
All three runs against Lopez came in the first three innings, including a two-run third by Tampa Bay. It was his first outing this season where he allowed more than one run in an outing and he was tagged with his first loss as a result. The 6-foot-1 righty still owns a 1.86 ERA and a 30:7 K:BB through 29 innings. With Carlos Rodon (shoulder) expected back soon, Lopez could be headed back to the bullpen.
Aug 18, 2021
Cruises through five innings in win
Lopez (2-0) earned the win over Oakland on Tuesday, pitching five scoreless innings during which he allowed one hit and two walks while striking out four.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander gave up only one hit in the outing -- a Matt Chapman single in the second inning that was immediately wiped out by a double play. He was held out from going deeper into the contest because he is still building up his pitch count, but Lopez nonetheless lasted long enough to pick up his second win of the campaign. He has looked dominant since returning to the rotation to fill in for the injured Carlos Rodon (shoulder), pitching a total of eight scoreless frames in which he has given up just two hits while striking out eight. Lopez could get another start this weekend at Tampa Bay.

Two-start week likely awaits
Lopez is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Athletics at Guaranteed Rate Field, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Lopez will make a second turn through the rotation as a replacement for Carlos Rodon (shoulder), who is expected to spend more than the minimum 10 days on the injured list after being deactivated last week. Though Chicago could have turned to All-Star Lance Lynn to start Tuesday after his last outing came in Thursday's win over the Yankees in the "Field of Dreams" game, he'll instead get an extra day of rest, clearing the way for Lopez to take the hill for the second game of the series with Oakland. Lopez -- who struck out four over three scoreless frames in last week's start against the Twins -- should push his pitch count up to the 60-to-75 range versus Oakland. He'll tentatively line up for his second start of the week Aug. 22 in Tampa Bay.

In line for another start
Lopez could start in place of Carlos Rodon (shoulder) the next turn through the rotation, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Lopez filled in Wednesday after the White Sox placed Rodon on the 10-day injured list for what is expected to be longer than the minimum. Hence, the need for a fill-in starter next week. If manager Tony La Russa goes with Lopez, who pitched three scoreless innings Wednesday, the start will come during the three-game series against Oakland that runs from Tuesday to Thursday.

Works three innings in spot start
Lopez allowed a hit and two walks with four strikeouts over three scoreless innings in a no-decision versus Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old was making a spot start after Carlos Rodon (shoulder) was placed on the injured list. Lopez pitched well, throwing 30 of 51 pitches for strikes while covering the most innings of any Chicago pitcher in the contest. He's mainly worked out of the bullpen this season with a 1.35 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 22:5 K:BB across 20 innings. It seems more likely Lopez will return to the bullpen rather than stay in the rotation long-term.

Getting spot start Wednesday
Lopez will start Wednesday's game against the Twins in Minnesota, Vinnie Duber of NBC Sports Chicago reports.
ANALYSIS
Over his five seasons with the White Sox, Lopez has picked up 82 starts, but he's found a niche as a high-leverage reliever in his eight appearances out of the bullpen in 2021, logging a 1.29 ERA in 14 innings while limiting opposing hitters to a .146 average. He'll be thrust into starting duty on short notice while the White Sox rejigger their pitching schedule following Carlos Rodon's (shoulder) move to the IL, but expect the White Sox to limit Lopez's workload. He'll be pitching on two days' rest and hasn't covered more than three innings since getting a call-up from Triple-A Charlotte in mid-July, so Lopez shouldn't be expected to go through the Minnesota batting order more than once. Michael Kopech -- who hasn't pitched since Saturday -- could be a candidate to work multiple innings behind Lopez.

Eats innings in bullpen
Lopez allowed one hit and struck out four over three scoreless relief innings in Sunday's 2-1 win over Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
It was a modified bullpen day for the White Sox, who called up Jimmy Lambert to start and got by with a string of relievers after that. Lopez has been an innings eater for the pale hose since his call up from Triple-A, pitching more than an inning in five of seven appearances. He has a 1.29 ERA over 14 innings and should be a prime candidate for a spot start or as a piggy-back starter when manager Tony La Russa wants to give the established rotation members a break.

Tosses three innings
Lopez allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk over three innings during a win over the Twins in Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Lopez gave up a run on a Josh Donaldson sacrifice fly in the first inning but the only earned run he allowed was a solo blast by Mitch Garver in the second. It was his first big-league start during the 2021 campaign after producing a 7.62 ERA in 10 Triple-A starts before his promotion earlier this month. He'll likely slide back to the bullpen but could make spot starts for the White Sox as needed.

Set to start nightcap
Lopez is expected to start the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Twins, Vinnie Duber of NBC Sports Chicago reports.
ANALYSIS
Lopez may not be asked to pitch deep into the game, as the White Sox have a well-rested bullpen following strong starts by Lucas Giolito and Carlos Rodon over the weekend. Lance Lynn will pitch the afternoon game, which shouldn't tax the bullpen much if he continues the form he's had throughout the year. Lopez may not be able to go deep in the game even if the White Sox need him to, as he's struggled to a 7.62 ERA and 1.90 WHIP in 10 starts for Triple-A Charlotte this season.

Called up by White Sox
Lopez was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Friday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander has been at the Triple-A level all season but will join the White Sox for the start of the second half. Lopez has exclusively pitched as a starter since signing with Chicago in 2017 and started in all 10 of his outings this year at Triple-A, though he'll work out of the bullpen with the big-league rotation currently in good health. The 27-year-old has a 7.62 ERA over 39 Triple-A innings this season, but the White Sox are apparently hoping he'll produce better results as a reliever.
