Team not expected to add 3B help
Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns indicated Monday that he expects the team's starting third baseman to come out of the group of Mauricio, Brett Baty and Mark Vientos, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Stearns also noted that he's not viewing any of the trio of players as a front-runner for the gig and it's possible no winner will be declared by Opening Day. The Mets have said Jeff McNeil will be confined mostly to second base, which would indicate that if Mauricio receives everyday at-bats then it would likely come at the hot corner. It's certainly a position battle to keep a close eye on during spring training.

To see action at 3B in winter ball
Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said Wednesday that Mauricio will play some third base in the Dominican Winter League, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Mauricio made his major-league debut at second base this past season and that is probably going to be his long-term position in Queens, but the Mets want him to continue building his defensive versatility as he participates in winter ball for the third year in a row. The talented young infielder could maybe step in at the hot corner next season if Brett Baty is unable to take a significant step forward. Mark Vientos is also an option at third, though he profiles as more of a first baseman or DH moving forward.

Logs seventh steal
Mauricio went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Sunday's 9-1 loss to the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Mauricio had one of the Mets' two hits in the game. He slashed .248/.296/.347 with two home runs, seven steals, nine RBI and 11 runs scored across his first 26 major-league games. The infield prospect will likely have a chance to win a starting role for 2024 during spring training after holding his own over his first month in the majors.

Batting second Tuesday
Mauricio is starting at third base and batting second Tuesday at Miami.
ANALYSIS
It's the fifth consecutive start for Mauricio as Brett Baty continues to be limited by a left groin strain. Mauricio, 22, boasts a .308/.345/.404 slash line with one homer and six steals in 14 major-league games (55 plate appearances) since the Mets made him a Sept. 1 call-up.

Returns to lineup
Mauricio (illness) is starting at third base and batting sixth Friday versus the Reds in his return to the lineup, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mauricio has sat out the last two days with an illness but is feeling well enough to give it a go for the series opener against Cincinnati. This is the first major-league start at third base for the rookie, and he could see more action there if Brett Baty's groin injury lingers.

Out again with illness
Mauricio (illness) remains out of the lineup Thursday against the Diamondbacks, Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
He should be available off the bench, however, after fully sitting out of the Mets' win over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday. Mauricio, 22, has batted .306/.342/.444 with one homer and four steals through 10 major-league games since his Sept. 1 call-up.

Out due to illness
Mauricio is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Diamondbacks because of an illness, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It sounds like a day-to-day situation for the talented 22-year-old infielder, who hit his first major-league homer in Tuesday's win over Arizona and boasts a .306/.342/.444 batting line through his first 38 big-league plate appearances. Jeff McNeil is playing second base for the Mets on Wednesday as Brandon Nimmo, Rafael Ortega and DJ Stewart start across the outfield.

Takes seat Wednesday
Mauricio is absent from the lineup Wednesday versus the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Jeff McNeil will cover second base as Brandon Nimmo, Rafael Ortega and DJ Stewart start across the outfield. This is presumably a planned day of rest for Mauricio, who slugged his first major-league homer in the Mets' win over Arizona on Tuesday.
Sep 13, 2023
Launches first career homer
Mauricio went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 7-4 win over the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
With the score tied 1-1 in the fourth inning, Mauricio put the Mets in the lead for good by ripping a Ryne Nelson fastball just fair down the right-field line. It was the first career big-league homer for the 22-year-old infielder, who is batting .306 (11-for-36) through his first 38 MLB plate appearances with two doubles, two runs, five RBI and a perfect 4-for-4 performance on steal attempts. Mauricio is also posting some impressive Statcast numbers with a 91.9 mph average exit velocity that is comparable to Mike Trout's and a 50.0 percent hard-hit rate that would rank in the 90th percentile if he had enough playing time to qualify. Only seven players this season have hit a ball harder than Mauricio's 117.3 mph max exit velocity, a list that includes Ronald Acuna, Matt Olson and Shohei Ohtani.

Extends hot start
Mauricio went 2-for-4 with a stolen base in a loss to the Nationals on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Mauricio extended his hitting streak to five games to begin his career with a second-inning single, which he promptly followed with a stolen base. The rookie added another single in the sixth for his third multi-hit performance. Mauricio has yet go deep in the majors, but he's otherwise been impressive with a .421/.421/.474 slash line and three thefts through 19 plate appearances.
Sep 6, 2023
Drives in first run
Mauricio went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Tuesday's 11-5 win over the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
The 22-year-old had the least impressive night of the four Mets rookies in the lineup, but his two-out single in the eighth inning gave Mauricio his first career RBI. He's gone an impressive 6-for-15 (.400) in four games since his promotion with a double and two steals, and Mauricio figures to be a fixture at second base for New York over the final month of the season.
Sep 3, 2023
Goes 2-for-4, swipes bag
Mauricio went 2-for-4 with his first career stolen base in Saturday's loss to the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Mauricio followed up his impressive MLB debut with the second consecutive two-hit performance and stole a base while operating out of the nine-hole. The 22-year-old switch-hitting infielder showcased an impressive combination of power and speed in the minors, posting more than 20 home runs and 20 steals in each of the last two seasons. Mauricio is expected to be the Mets' primary second baseman down the stretch.

Sets Statcast record in debut
Mauricio went 2-for-3 with a double in Friday's 2-1 win over the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Getting the start at second base and batting ninth in his big-league debut, Mauricio ripped a double off Logan Gilbert to lead off the third inning that left his bat at 117.3 mph -- the fastest exit velocity recorded during the Statcast era on a player's first career hit, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Mauricio earned his promotion by slashing .288/.357/.558 for Triple-A Syracuse in August with seven homers and eight steals in 24 games, and the 22-year-old figures to get a long look in September as Francisco Lindor's potential long-term double-play partner.

Batting ninth in MLB debut
Mauricio was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Mauricio is playing second base and batting ninth for the Mets on Friday versus the Mariners in his major-league debut. The 22-year-old has batted .292/.346/.506 with 23 home runs and 24 stolen bases this season with Syracuse. A switch-hitter, Mauricio is expected to see most of his playing time at second base but is capable of handling shortstop, third base and left field, as well.
Aug 30, 2023
Promotion imminent
The Mets will call Mauricio up from Triple-A Syracuse on Friday, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 22-year-old infielder is having the best statistical season of his career in Triple-A this year, slashing .295/.349/.511 with 23 homers, 71 RBI and 24 stolen bases. With Francisco Lindor locked in as New York's everyday shortstop, Mauricio will likely take over as the Mets' primary third baseman -- replacing the struggling Mark Vientos -- while making an occasional start at second base or in left field.
Aug 8, 2023
Set for work at third base
The Mets are planning to begin a rotation with Mauricio at Triple-A Syracuse in which he will play second base, shortstop and third base, probably twice a week at each position, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Mauricio has made 41 starts at second and 25 at shortstop so far this season, but he has yet to appear at third base. He will soon get reps at the hot corner as the Mets move him away from outfield duties and get him familiar at a position of need at the major-league level. Overall, the 22-year-old is batting .289/.338/.479 with 16 homers and 19 steals in 97 games with Syracuse this season.

Back in action at Triple-A
Mauricio (ankle) returned to the Triple-A Syracuse lineup Wednesday and has appeared in each of the affiliate's last five games, going 8-for-21 with three home runs, three walks, six RBI, four runs and two stolen bases during that stretch.
ANALYSIS
Mauricio had been tending to a bone bruise in his left ankle coming out of a June 10 doubleheader, but he missed only a few days before he was cleared to resume playing. The 22-year-old switch-hitting middle infielder has immediately resumed raking at Syracuse and is now holding down a .325/.368/.546 slash line across 291 plate appearances this season. In addition to seeing time at both second base and shortstop, Mauricio has also picked up three starts in left field, giving him another potential pathway to playing time when the Mets likely bring him up to the big leagues at some point later this summer.

Bone bruise in ankle
Mauricio is considered day-to-day at Triple-A Syracuse after an MRI showed a bone bruise in his left ankle, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
The bone bruise stems from a collision at second base back on June 4 and Mauricio will probably be rested until he is fully discomfort-free. In the end, though, it's a relatively encouraging diagnosis given that there is no structural damage. The 22-year-old top infield prospect has been pushing toward his MLB debut while delivering a robust .320/.360/.524 batting line with eight home runs, 35 RBI, nine stolen bases and 38 runs scored through 60 games this season in the International League.
Jun 11, 2023
Slated for MRI
Mauricio will undergo an MRI on his ankle in the coming days, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Mauricio was involved in a collision at second base at Triple-A Syracuse on June 4, and although he's appeared in games recently, he'll undergo further testing to determine the extent of his ankle injury. As long as the issue isn't serious, he could be in the mix to be called up relatively soon since he's slashing .320/.360/.524 with eight homers, 38 runs, 35 RBI and nine stolen bases in the minors this year.
Jun 2, 2023
Learning left field
Mets general manager Billy Eppler said Friday that Mauricio has begun "acclimating to left field," Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
Mauricio continues to add more defensive versatility to his profile as he pushes toward his MLB debut. He had exclusively played shortstop in the minors before recently switching over to second base at Triple-A Syracuse. The 22-year-old top prospect boasts a .336/.377/.550 slash line with seven homers and nine steals through 53 games this season in the International League and should carry immediate fantasy relevance whenever he gets the call to Queens.
May 26, 2023
Could get next promotion
Mauricio might get called up to take over the starting job at second base with the Mets, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 22-year-old's .348/.384/.586 slash line at Triple-A this season makes a good case for promotion all on its own, but the Mets are also getting little production out of the left field duo of Mark Canha and Tommy Pham. Moving Jeff McNeil out to left on a full-time basis would then open up the keystone for Mauricio, adding another top prospect to a Mets youth movement that already features Francisco Alvarez at catcher, Brett Baty at third base and Mark Vientos in a utility/DH role.

Transitioning to utility role
Mauricio played his first game at second base for Triple-A Syracuse on Friday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With Francisco Lindor locked in as the starting shortstop at the big-league level, Mauricio's path to the majors will have to come at another position -- or positions, as the Mets are potentially viewing the 22-year-old as a future utility player. "The plan is to move him around a little bit now," manager Buck Showalter said over the weekend. "It's to increase his versatility -- something he's good at." In addition to the keystone, Mauricio could see time at both infield corners and in the outfield at Triple-A as he works on his defensive flexibility, but his bat could be major-league ready right now. Through 21 games with Syracuse to begin 2023, he's slashing .350/.395/.688 with six homers, four steals, 16 runs and 16 RBI.
Mar 18, 2023
Optioned to Triple-A Syracuse
Mauricio was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse by the Mets on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Mauricio showed impressive power in his time in camp with the Mets with four homers and a .636 slugging mark over 35 plate appearances. he also hit .242 with a .286 on-base percentage, which shows there's still work to be done for the 21-year-old infielder. He'll begin the year in Syracuse and could be an option for the Mets if there's a need up the middle in the infield.
Mar 13, 2023
Launches fourth spring homer
Mauricio went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Getting the start at shortstop and hitting ninth, Mauricio took Elvin Rodriguez deep in the fifth inning for his fourth homer of the spring. Mauricio's .304/.360/.870 slash line in camp is impressive, but the 21-year-old has yet play above Double-A and his ability to get on base once he reaches the majors is a major question mark -- he has a .296 OBP in nearly 1,000 plate appearances across the last two minor-league seasons. Even so, a quick start to his campaign at Triple-A this year could put him in line to make his MLB debut at some point over the summer.
Mar 2, 2023
Early power surge continues
Mauricio launched a two-run home run in his only plate appearance during Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Entering the game in the ninth inning at second base, the Mets' prospect took minor-league pitcher Sean Reynolds deep to right field. Mauricio has slugged three homers in seven at-bats to begin his spring, but he remains a long shot to break camp on the big-league roster. After hitting 26 home runs in 123 Double-A games in 2022, however, the 21-year-old's power is legit, and he could make his big-league debut sometime this summer if injuries open up a spot in the New York infield.
Aug 12, 2022
No plans to shift off shortstop
Maurico will continue to be developed as a shortstop by the Mets despite seemingly being blocked at the big-league level by Francisco Lindor, Alex Schiffer of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
"We've talked about it as an organization, I don't think we're at that point right now where we're ready to make that move yet," Double-A Binghamton manager Reid Brignac said this week. "When you got a guy [in Lindor] that's on a long-term contract and one of the best shortstops in Major League Baseball, it's going to be hard to move him off of that spot right? So at some point when [Mauricio] gets closer to being a big-league player there will be talks about moving him to other positions. The more positions you play, the more opportunity you get." Third base would be an obvious shift, but the Mets have a top prospect at the hot corner already in Brett Baty, who just got a promotion to Triple-A and is likely to reach the majors before Mauricio does. Regardless of where the 21-year-old eventually plays, he'll need to show a better hit tool and/or more plate discipline to earn a regular role in the big-league lineup, as he's slashing .246/.282/.474 with 21 homers and 14 steals in 92 games for Binghamton this se

Shows off power for Rumble Ponies
Mauricio went 2-for-4 with a walk and two solo home runs for Double-A Binghamton on Thursday,
ANALYSIS
The 21-year-old returned to the starting lineup July 13 after recovering from a minor hand injury and has gone 10-for-43 (.233) with two doubles and three homers in 10 games. Mauricio's approach at the plate still needs some refinement -- he's posted career highs with a 44.0 percent flyball rate and 50.0 percent pull rate, leading to a lopsided .248/.285/.483 slash line through 80 games this year for Binghamton -- but his 24.5 percent strikeout rate is acceptable, and his 18 homers and 11 steals highlight his potential if he can learn to make more consistent quality contact.
Jul 13, 2022
Set to return from hand injury
Mauricio, who hasn't started for Double-A Binghamton since July 3 due to a bruised hand, is expected to return to the lineup Wednesday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
Mauricio was able to make an appearance off the bench Tuesday as a pinch hitter, and assuming he didn't experience any setbacks with his hand, he should be back in action Wednesday either at designated hitter or shortstop. The 21-year-old is slashing .250/.283/.482 with 15 home runs and 11 stolen bases across 300 plate appearances with Binghamton on the season.
May 23, 2022
Finding groove at Double-A
Mauricio went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and four RBI for Double-A Binghamton on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The 21-year-old has seen his prospect status fade significantly over the last couple years, but the Mets still protected Mauricio from the Rule 5 draft in the offseason and he's beginning to reward the team's faith in him, batting .298 over his last 11 games with seven of his 14 hits going for extra bases, including three homers. He also has a 32.0 percent strikeout rate against a 4.0 percent walk rate over that stretch, however, and his inability to control the strike zone remains the biggest obstacle between Mauricio and a regular spot in the big-league lineup down the road.
Nov 19, 2021
Shielded from Rule 5 draft
Mauricio was added to the Mets' 40-man roster Friday, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
While Mauricio isn't all that close to making his big-league debut, he is too talented to leave unprotected from the Rule 5 draft. Once a skinny shortstop who was all projection, Mauricio has filled out his 6-foot-3 frame and is getting to that impressive power in games. He will need to improve his approach in the coming years.
