Ambushed by Mets
Walker (15-6) took the loss Saturday, giving up four runs on four hits and four walks over seven innings as the Phillies fell 4-3 to the Mets. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
A three-run first inning nearly led to a quick exit for Walker, but he gutted out the early offense and helped preserve the Phillies' bullpen ahead of Tuesday's playoff opener in the wild-card round. The veteran righty tossed 106 pitches (64 strikes) in his final regular-season trip to the mound, and while Walker was able to give the Phillies innings in September, they weren't very effective ones -- he got tagged for at least four runs in four of his final five outings, posting a 5.93 ERA and 19:12 K:BB through 30.1 innings on the month.
Sep 29, 2023
Start postponed due to rain
Walker's next start will be pushed back after Friday's game between the Phillies and Mets was postponed due to rain, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Saturday, with Walker presumably now slated to start one of those contests. Walker will be gunning for win No. 16 as he closes out his regular season.
Sep 23, 2023
Strong in no-decision
Walker did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk over six innings against the Mets. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Walker pitched well enough on Friday night against the Mets to earn his 11th quality start. The quality outing was certainly a welcome relief as he had allowed three or more runs over his four previous starts. Walker has pitched to a 4.35 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 135:65 K:BB over 165.2 innings in his first season with the Phillies. He is currently slated to make his final start of the year against the Pirates.
Sep 18, 2023
Goes seven frames in no-decision
Walker gave up five runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out three over seven innings Sunday against the Cardinals. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
The Cardinals got to Walker for three runs in the third and two runs in the fifth, but ended strong with two shutout innings and was able to provide the Phillies with some length. It's just the second start in the last seven games he's managed to go more than six innings, a span during which he's struggled to a 5.85 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and has just 29 strikeouts in 40 innings. The 30-year-old currently projects for a home matchup against his former team in the Mets.
Sep 11, 2023
Another rough outing
Walker did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits and three walks over 5.1 innings against Atlanta. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Outside of a triple by Austin Riley in the first that turned into a little-league home run when the ball was fumbled in left field, Walker did not allow a home run which was about the only positive development to take away from this outing. Walker threw only 53 of 103 pitches for strikes and hit two batters as part of the 11 runners he allowed to reach base. Walker has gone 16 consecutive starts throwing at least five innings but following a stretch between June 6 and July 15 that saw him win seven consecutive games with a 1.64 ERA, Walker holds a 5.08 ERA over his last nine appearances. His next start is scheduled to take place this weekend in St. Louis.
Sep 5, 2023
Goes just deep enough to win
Walker (15-5) completed five innings Monday, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four batters to earn the win over San Diego.
ANALYSIS
Walker wasn't very effective in the outing, but he took advantage of a big early lead to take home the victory. The right-hander hasn't been going deep of late -- he's fallen short of six innings in each of his past four starts, posting a 5.23 ERA and 1.69 WHIP over 20.2 frames during that span but taking just one loss. Walker ranks third in the majors with 15 wins on the campaign, though his 4.15 ERA and 1.32 WHIP aren't anywhere the marks of the league leaders.
Aug 29, 2023
Earns 14th win
Walker (14-5) earned the win Monday, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks over 5.2 innings against the Angels. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Walker dealt with plenty of baserunners Monday but managed to limit the damage to an RBI single in the first inning and a two-run single in the fourth. He exited the game with two outs in the sixth, holding a 5-3 lead and secured his 14th win, further adding to his career-high. Walker has a 4.05 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 119:57 K:BB across 142.1 innings on the campaign. His next start is tentatively scheduled to come in Milwaukee over the weekend.
Aug 23, 2023
Seven strikeouts in no decision
Walker did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks over five innings against the Giants. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
In his return to Philadelphia's rotation, Walker ran into some bad luck in the first inning, allowing an unearned run to score after his defense committed two early errors. The 31-year-old righty then managed to hold San Francisco at bay until Joc Pederson laced a two-run double in the fifth. Walker had been living up to his last name in his previous seven starts, issuing 4.7 BB/9 to go with a 4.25 ERA and 1.37 WHIP across 42.1 innings during that stretch. He is projected to face the Angels at home early next week.
Aug 13, 2023
Will skip start after poor outing
Walker (13-5) took the loss Saturday, allowing three runs on three hits and six walks over five innings against the Twins. He struck out two. Phillies manager Rob Thomson said he would skip Walker's next scheduled start to give him some extra rest, the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker has given up four or more runs in three of his last six starts with a 18:14 K:BB ratio in 30.1 innings. "Control is off, command is off, velocity is down," Thomson said. "So I think it's time to just give him a little breather."
Aug 6, 2023
Allows four runs in win
Walker (13-4) earned the win Sunday, allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk over seven innings in an 8-4 victory over the Royals. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
It looked like it could be a short outing for Walker after he surrendered four runs in the first two innings. However, the 30-year-old Walker blanked the Royals over his next five innings, allowing just one more hit in that span, as he tied Justin Steele for the league lead with 13 wins. Walker now sports a 3.98 ERA with a 1.26 WHIP and 104:49 K:BB across 23 starts (126.2 innings) this season. He's currently lined up for a home matchup with the Twins in his next outing.
Jul 31, 2023
Notches 12th win
Walker (12-4) earned the win Monday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over 6.2 innings against the Marlins. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
After allowing a two-run homer to Jorge Soler in the first inning, Walker rebounded to blank Miami over his next 5.2 frames to earn his 12th win. The 30-year-old Walker is now 8-1 over his last 10 starts, with a 2.45 ERA in that span. Overall, his ERA is down to 3.99 with a 1.27 WHIP and 102:48 K:BB across 22 starts (119.2 innings) this season. Walker's next outing is currently lined up as a home matchup with the Royals this weekend.
Jul 26, 2023
Allows two runs in no-decision
Walker did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks over 5.2 innings against the Orioles. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
It certainly could've been worse for Walker on Tuesday -- he held the Orioles to just two runs despite needing 104 pitches to make it through 5.3 innings. The 30-year-old right-hander has pitched to a 4.56 ERA over his last four outings after posting a pristine 0.84 mark in his previous five starts. Overall, Walker is 11-4 with a 4.06 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 98:46 K:BB through 21 starts (113 innings) this season. He's currently slated for a road matchup with the Marlins in his next outing.
Jul 20, 2023
Win streak snapped
Walker (11-4) took the loss Thursday versus the Brewers after he gave up four runs on six hits and two walks across six innings. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
The 30-year-old entered the contest with victories in seven straight starts and had a 1.84 ERA during that span, but Milwaukee tagged him for four runs while Corbin Burnes shut down the Philadelphia offense. Walker still pitched well for the most part, but Christian Yelich gave the Brewers all they would need with a three-run homer in the third inning. The surging Orioles are likely up next for Walker, who has a 4.11 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 94:42 K:BB over 107.1 innings this season.
Jul 16, 2023
Extends win streak to seven
Walker (11-3) picked up the win in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Padres, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
It was far from a dominating performance, but Walker got plenty of run support in a 9-4 victory. The right-hander has reeled off seven straight wins since June 6, a stretch in which he sports a 1.84 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 43:15 K:BB through 44 innings. The key to his recent success has been his ability to keep the ball in the park -- Walker's served up only two homers during his win streak, after getting taken deep 10 times in his first 57.1 innings this season.
Jul 6, 2023
Nabs sixth straight win
Walker (10-3) earned the win Wednesday, allowing four runs on five hits and five walks over seven innings against the Rays. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Walker got tagged early for two runs in the first inning and then went on to surrender another run in each of the next two innings before finally settling in. The right-hander did not allow another run over his final four innings of work and finished with eight strikeouts for the third time in his last six starts. Walker managed to secure his 10th win of the season, tying him for first in the National League in that category, and he's now won each of his last six starts.
Jun 29, 2023
Finishes strong month with win
Walker (9-3) allowed a run on six hits and a walk while striking out six over six innings to earn the win Thursday over the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Walker had an excellent June, allowing six runs over 36 innings across six starts. He also posted a 34:10 K:BB for the month, and he's now won five straight outings. After some uneven performances early on, he's settled down with a 3.93 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 77:33 K:BB over 89.1 innings through 17 starts on the year. Walker is projected to make his next start on the road in Tampa, which would be one of the biggest tests he's faced in a while.
Jun 24, 2023
Sharp against former club
Walker (8-3) picked up the win in Friday's 5-1 victory over the Mets, allowing one run on three hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Brandon Nimmo touched him up for a solo shot in the third inning, but otherwise Walker was dominant against the team he won 19 games for over the prior two seasons. The veteran right-hander tossed 54 of 91 pitches en route to his second straight quality start and eighth of the season, and over his last seven outings Walker has produced a dazzling 1.71 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 32:13 K:BB over 42 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next start, likely to come on the road next week against the Cubs.
Jun 17, 2023
Fires eight frames
Walker (7-3) allowed one run on seven hits over eight innings Friday, striking out eight and picking up a win over Oakland.
ANALYSIS
Walker took advantage of the nice matchup and dominated with his best outing of the year. It was his longest start of the season and his eight punchouts tied his season best. After posting a 5.65 ERA through 12 starts, Walker has yielded just one run across 20 innings over his last three starts. The 30-year-old righty is now sporting a more tolerable 4.31 ERA and 66:31 K:BB through 77.1 innings. Walker is currently lined up to face Atlanta at home next week.
Jun 11, 2023
Five scoreless innings versus LAD
Walker (6-3) earned the win Sunday, allowing two hits and two walks over five scoreless innings against the Dodgers. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Walker hasn't allowed a run during his two-game winning streak, tallying 13 strikeouts in 12 innings during that stretch. The right-hander was off more than he was on to start the campaign, posting a 5.65 ERA over his first 12 appearances (57.1 innings), but he's really picked up his play of late. Walker will look to stay sharp during his next start, which is tentatively scheduled for the opener of a three-game weekend set in Oakland.
Jun 6, 2023
Dominant against Detroit
Walker (5-3) earned the win Tuesday, allowing two hits and three walks over seven scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory over the Tigers. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
It was Walker's best start to date with the Phillies as he logged season highs in strikeouts and innings pitched. The 30-year-old Walker has looked better after a rough start to the season -- he has a 3.53 ERA over his last seven starts after posting a 6.91 mark over his first six. Walker now sports a 5.04 ERA with a 1.37 WHIP and 53:29 K:BB across 64.1 innings this year.
Jun 1, 2023
Falls to former team
Walker (4-3) took the loss Thursday, allowing three runs on two hits and three walks over 4 innings against the Mets. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Walker pitched fairly well for three innings in his return to Citi Field, but Mark Canha's two-run homer in the third would be enough to tag him with the loss. The 30-year-old Walker has been inconsistent in his first season with the Phillies, though he's held opponents to three runs or fewer in five of his last six starts. Walker sports a 5.65 ERA with a 1.45 WHIP and 45:26 K:BB through 12 starts (57.1 innings) this year,
May 27, 2023
Collects fourth win
Walker (4-2) picked up the win in Friday's 6-4 victory over Atlanta, giving up three runs on 10 hits and a walk over 6.2 innings. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
It was far from a dominant performance for the veteran right-hander, who generated only five swinging strikes among his 85 pitches, but Walker kept the damage to a minimum and got some late run support before leaving the mound. The quality start was his fifth in 11 outings this season, but he's still digging his way from under a rough stretch in late April and early May. Walker will take a 5.57 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 43:23 K:BB through 53.1 innings into his next start, likely to come on the road next week against one of his former clubs, the Mets.
May 21, 2023
Sharp in no-decision
Walker did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two hits and three walks over 5.1 scoreless innings in a 2-1 victory over the Cubs. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
It was a solid bounce-back performance from Walker after he allowed four runs without making it out of the first inning Wednesday in San Francisco. The 30-year-old right-hander is 3-2 with a subpar 5.79 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 42:22 K:BB through 10 starts (46.2 innings) this season. Walker will look to build off Sunday's outing in his next start, tentatively scheduled for next week against Atlanta.
May 20, 2023
Starting Sunday on short rest
Walker will start on three days' rest Sunday against the Cubs, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Phillies demoted struggling starting Bailey Falter and didn't call up anyone to replace him, so they'll need to get creative with the pitching. Walker will be available on short rest after getting knocked out in the first inning of his previous start Wednesday against the Giants. Walker has struggled in his first nine starts as a Phillie, posting a 6.53 ERA and 1.50 WHIP.
May 17, 2023
Can't escape first inning
Walker did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks over two-thirds of an inning against San Francisco. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Walker was a disaster Wednesday. He retired two of the first three batters, but allowed five straight to reach and departed after throwing 40 first-inning pitches. Matt Strahm stranded two runners to prevent Walker's day from getting worse. The righty has been a nightmare in his first season with the Phillies. He has a 6.53 ERA and 1.50 WHIP.
May 13, 2023
Quality start in Colorado
Walker allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out three without walking a batter over six-plus innings, taking a no-decision Friday versus the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Walker was sharp early, then faded by allowing three runs over the sixth and seventh innings before he was relieved by Matt Strahm. This was Walker's fourth quality start in eight outings this season. The right-hander has had some uneven results with a 5.75 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 38:17 K:BB through 40.2 innings, and he takes a 3-2 record into his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to be at San Francisco next week.
May 7, 2023
Sharp in bounce-back outing
Walker (3-2) earned the win Sunday, allowing one run on three hits over six innings against the Red Sox. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
It was an encouraging performance from Walker, who allowed 13 runs over 7.1 innings in his previous two starts. Triston Casas' solo home run in the fifth was the lone blemish on Walker's line Sunday. The 30-year-old righty lowered his ERA to 5.97 with a 1.41 WHIP and 35:17 K:BB through his first 34.2 innings this season. Walker will look to build on Sunday's performance in his next start, tentatively lined up for next week in Colorado.
May 2, 2023
Hammered for eight runs
Walker (2-2) yielded eight runs on eight hits and three walks over 3.1 innings Monday, striking out six and taking a loss against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
For the second straight start, Walker had some home run trouble, as the long ball accounted for five of the eight runs against him Monday. He allowed one in each of the first three frames, including David Peralta's three-run shot in the second inning. Walker saw his ERA soar to 6.91 with a 29:17 K:BB through 28.2 innings this season. On the bright side, he generated a season-high 11 whiffs, with eight coming on the splitter. Walker is projected to face the Red Sox at home this weekend.
May 1, 2023
Cleared to start Monday
Walker (forearm) is listed as the Phillies' starting pitcher for Monday's road game against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Walker exited his last start Wednesday against the Mariners with right forearm tightness, an injury that often foreshadows a stint on the injured list. The right-hander surprisingly received good news after being examined a day later, with team doctors determining that Walker didn't even need an MRI. He resumed throwing a bullpen session Friday and checked out fine following the workout, so Walker looks like he'll head into Monday's outing with no restrictions. Walker tentatively lines up for a two-start week, with his second turn set to come against Boston during the upcoming weekend.
Apr 28, 2023
On track for next scheduled start
Walker (forearm) felt good after a bullpen session Friday and remains on track to make his next scheduled start, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker made an early exit from his last turn in the Phillies' rotation Wednesday versus the Mariners due to right forearm tightness, but he checked out fine during a visit with team doctors Thursday and appears likely to take the mound with no restrictions Monday at Dodger Stadium. The 30-year-old right-hander has posted a 4.97 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 23:14 K:BB through 25.1 innings (five starts) this season with Philly.
Apr 27, 2023
Could make next scheduled start
Walker (forearm) could make his next scheduled start after an encouraging visit with the Phillies' medical staff Thursday, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
It was determined that an MRI was unnecessary after Walker was examined and then played catch without issue Thursday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park. He made an early exit from his start Wednesday against the Mariners due to right forearm tightness, but for now it would appear that the discomfort was only a minor scare. If he does indeed stay on his normal turn, Walker would face the Dodgers in Los Angeles next Monday.
Apr 27, 2023
Visiting team doctor Thursday
Walker (forearm) is scheduled to see a team doctor Thursday, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker was pulled from his start Wednesday against the Mariners after experiencing right forearm tightness. He surrendered five earned runs on five hits and two walks over four innings before departing. Whatever the team doctor finds, an IL stint seems likely.
Apr 26, 2023
Exits with forearm tightness
Walker was pulled from Wednesday's game against Seattle due to right forearm tightness, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After surrendering five runs on five hits and two walks, Walker was pulled just four innings into the game. The severity of his injury is unclear at the moment, but a trip to the injured list is likely.
Apr 19, 2023
Earns second win after shaky start
Walker (2-1) earned the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over 6.1 innings in a 5-2 win over the White Sox. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
The Phillies took an early 1-0 lead on a leadoff homer from Trea Turner, but Walker quickly coughed up the advantage by serving up a two-run home run to Andrew Vaughn in the bottom of the second. However, the right-hander was able to settle down and posted four scoreless frames before getting pulled with two on and one out in the seventh. It was Walker's second straight quality start, but he still has a questionable 17:12 K:BB through 21.1 innings.
Apr 15, 2023
Quality start in Cincy
Walker (1-1) picked up the win Friday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over six innings in an 8-3 victory over the Reds. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
It was the first quality start of the year for the veteran right-hander, who had failed to get out of the fifth inning in his first two turns through the rotation as a Phillie. Walker has issued multiple free passes in every outing so far though, and his 4.20 ERA might be a bit fortunate considering his 14:10 K:BB through 15 innings. He'll look to build on Friday's success when he next takes the mound, which is likely to come next week on the road against the White Sox.
Apr 9, 2023
Gives up two runs Sunday
Walker did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on three hits and five walks over 4.2 innings during a 6-4 loss to the Reds. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Walker took the loss during his season debut last Monday by giving up four runs in 4.1 innings, but he was slightly more effective during Sunday's series finale against the Reds. He fell just short of qualifying for the win, but the Phillies' bullpen was also unable to preserve the team's lead late in the game. The righty tentatively lines up for a rematch with Cincinnati on the road Friday.
Apr 4, 2023
Takes loss in season debut
Walker (0-1) took the loss against the Yankees on Monday, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing four runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five batters.
ANALYSIS
Walker fell behind 2-0 in the first inning, largely due to issuing three walks. He did a little better after that, but Gleyber Torres dinged the right-hander for a solo home run in the third frame, and Walker was pulled after facing just two batters in the fifth. The veteran hurler will look to bounce back in his next outing, which is tentatively lined up to take place at home against Cincinnati this weekend.
Mar 28, 2023
Goal is to reach 180 innings
Walker said Tuesday that his goal is to reach 180 innings this season, Alex Coffey of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
That would be a career-high workload for the 30-year-old right-hander, who finished at 157.1 innings with the Mets in 2022. The velocity readings have been down on Walker's entire arsenal this spring, but maybe that's by design as he aims to be more efficient. He signed a four-year, $72 million contract with the Phillies back in December and has been working with pitching coach Caleb Cotham on a plan to induce softer contact.
Mar 21, 2023
Starting Friday for PHI
Walker will start Friday's Grapefruit League contest for the Phillies, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker would have started Tuesday's finale against Team USA had Team Mexico beaten Japan on Monday, but instead the right-hander will return to the Phillies to make a spring start. The right-hander pitched well in his previous outing in the WBC with eight strikeouts and four scoreless innings. He's projected to be the third starter for the Phillies in 2023, and if he can stay healthy, he has a chance to be a solid -- if unspectacular -- fantasy option.
Mar 15, 2023
Impresses against Mexico
Walker threw four scoreless innings with eight strikeouts Tuesday for Team Mexico in a start against Great Britain in the World Baseball Classic.
ANALYSIS
Walker allowed just one hit with one walk, and showed off his athleticism by making a couple of impressive plays off the mound. The right-hander threw 40-of-63 pitches for strikes in one of the more impressive pitching performances of the tournament. Walker signed on with the Phillies in the offseason, and if Philadelphia gets this version of the 30-year-old, the club along with fantasy managers should be very happy.
Feb 28, 2023
To make Phillies debut Friday
Walker is scheduled to make his Grapefruit League debut Friday against the Tigers, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker signed a four-year, $72 million contract with the Phillies back in December and is now set for his first spring training close-up with the reigning National League champions. The 30-year-old right-hander worked to a solid 3.49 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 132:45 K:BB across 157.1 regular-season innings (29 starts) with the Mets last season.
Dec 6, 2022
Heading to Philly
Walker agreed to a four-year, $72 million contract with the Phillies on Tuesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker posted a 3.49 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 132:45 K:BB across 157.1 innings for the Mets last season, and he'll remain in the NL East for the foreseeable future. The 30-year-old will slot in behind aces Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola to bolster Philadelphia's already strong rotation.
Nov 7, 2022
Declines player option
Walker opted out of the final season on his contract with the Mets on Monday, electing to hit free agency.
ANALYSIS
In an unsurprising move, Walker has decided to forgo the $6 million player option he had for 2023 with New York. The 30-year-old returned to form in 2022, posting a 3.49 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with 132 strikeouts over 157.1 innings in 29 outings with the Mets and he will now seek higher value on the open market. With Jacob deGrom also opting out of his contract Monday, New York could be looking at a very different rotation around centerpiece Max Scherzer in 2023.
Oct 8, 2022
Added to wild-card roster
Walker was added added to the Mets' wild-card roster Saturday, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker wasn't initially included on the series roster but will join it as Joely Rodriguez exits with a shoulder injury. Walker isn't expected to start either of the two remaining possible games, but he could be used in relief.
Oct 7, 2022
Won't pitch in wild-card round
Walker wasn't included on the Mets' roster for the NL Wild Card Series against the Padres on Friday, Deesha Thosar of Fox Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander made his final start of the regular season during Tuesday's twin bill and delivered 4.1 scoreless frames, but he won't be needed during the series versus San Diego, which will be at most three games. Walker could factor into the Mets' rotation should the team advance to the NLDS, but for now Max Scherzer, Jacob deGrom (blister) and Chris Bassitt line up as the starting pitchers.
Oct 5, 2022
Fans 10 in no-decision
Walker didn't factor into the decision in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Nationals, allowing four hits over 4.1 scoreless innings. He struck out 10 without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
The veteran righty was dominant in his final outing of the regular season, and Walker only failed to rack up his 13th win of the year because the Mets wanted to give him a bit of extra rest ahead of the playoffs. It's the second time in his last five starts he's fanned double-digit batters, and he'll head into the postseason having posted a 3.03 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 36:5 K:BB through 29.2 innings over that stretch.
Sep 29, 2022
Eight strikeouts in no-decision
Walker did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over five innings against Miami. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Walker pitched a pretty good game aside from the two-run homer he surrendered to outfielder Bryan De La Cruz to open the scoring with two outs in the fourth inning. The righty has allowed a homer in five straight games, posting a less-than-stellar 4.15 ERA over 30.1 innings.
Sep 22, 2022
Let down by bullpen
Walker (12-5) allowed four earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three across six innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Walker allowed only a solo home run through six innings, though he allowed the first three batters he faced in the seventh frame to reach base. After he was pulled, Drew Smith entered and served up a grand slam that soured Walker's line. Entering Wednesday's outing, Walker had allowed two or fewer earned runs in five of his last seven starts -- good for a 3.35 ERA. For the season, he now owns a 3.53 ERA with a 114:43 K:BB across 148 innings.
Sep 17, 2022
Strikes out five in win
Walker (12-4) earned the win against the Pirates on Friday, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out five and walking none over 7.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Walker tossed 65 of 100 pitches for strikes across 7.1 frames Friday. This was the second win in a row for the veteran righty and his second quality start in a row as well. This has been a solid month for Walker, who has a 3.26 ERA in three starts after pitching to a 6.98 ERA last month. That has left him with a 3.42 ERA on the season to go along with a 1.18 WHIP and 111 strikeouts across 142 innings.

Punches out 10 in win
Walker (11-4) earned the victory Sunday in Miami, striking out 10 in seven innings while allowing a run on five hits.
ANALYSIS
Walker was masterful Sunday, throwing 61 of his 87 pitches for strikes. Brian Anderson's fourth-inning solo homer was the only blemish in an otherwise excellent outing. There was some concern that Walker might not make the start Sunday as he had been dealing with a blister on his right index finger since his last start. He has a 3.56 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 26:12 K:BB in 30.1 innings over his last six appearances. His next start will likely next weekend against Pittsburgh.
Sep 9, 2022
Starting Sunday
Walker (finger) will start Sunday's game against Miami, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker dealt with a blister on his right index finger following Tuesday's start against the Pirates and was monitored by the Mets' medical staff after having the blister drained Wednesday. However, the issue won't force him to miss any turns through the rotation, as he's on track to start Sunday's series finale. The right-hander has lasted at least five innings in each of his last three starts, posting a 5.28 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in 15.1 innings during that time.

Blister surfaces in loss
Walker (10-4), who was charged with the loss Tuesday against the Pirates, is dealing with a blister on his right index finger, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The right-hander allowed four runs on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks over five innings.
ANALYSIS
The 30-year-old threw 50 of his 80 pitches for strikes and generated only seven swinging strikes in Pittsburgh, though it's unclear how much of a factor the blister played in those results. Walker doesn't expect the issue to affect his next turn through the rotation, which tentatively lines up for Sunday in Miami. He'll have the blister drained Wednesday and receive further treatment.

Mets-Pirates postponed Monday
Walker and the Mets won't face the Pirates on Monday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Pittsburgh, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The two teams are set to make up the contest as part of a split doubleheader Wednesday. Because the Mets have an open date in the schedule Thursday, the team isn't expected to add a temporary sixth starter to the rotation, so Walker should stay on schedule to make a start against the Pirates either Tuesday or Wednesday. Jacob deGrom and Chris Bassitt are in line to start the other two contests of the series.
Aug 31, 2022
Surrenders three runs Tuesday
Walker allowed three runs on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts over 5.1 innings against the Dodgers. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Walker managed to get through the Dodgers' lineup the first time but ran into trouble the second time through the order. A few hits, a hit batter and a walk led to three runs being scored in the third inning. The wild outing was uncharacteristic of Walker this season as Tuesday was just the third time that he has walked three or more batters in his 23 starts. He will carry a 3.45 ERA into his next start which is lined up to be against Washington this weekend.
Aug 24, 2022
No-decision against Yanks
Walker didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Yankees, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander was held to 81 pitches (49 strikes) after exiting his last start with back spasms, but Walker seemed to emerge unscathed from this outing. Since the All-Star break, the 30-year-old has stumbled to a 6.31 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 15:10 K:BB through 25.2 innings, and while much of that damage came in a brutal one-inning stint against Atlanta on Aug. 5, Walker will still be a risky fantasy option until he can string together some better performances.
Aug 22, 2022
Named Tuesday's starter
Walker (back) will start Tuesday against the Yankees, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker exited his start against Atlanta last Tuesday due to back spasms and was unable to start Sunday, but he'll return to action after receiving a few additional days of rest. The right-hander has had mixed results since the All-Star break, posting a 6.97 ERA and 1.69 WHIP in 20.2 innings over five starts.
Aug 20, 2022
Could start Tuesday
Walker (back) won't make his scheduled start Sunday against the Phillies, though he's expected to avoid the injured list and could start Tuesday against the Yankees, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
Back spasms forced Walker to exit his previous start Tuesday against Atlanta, but the issue doesn't seem like a major one. While he'll need at least a couple extra days to rest, he may not need to miss even one full turn in the rotation. The Mets have yet to announce a starter for Sunday's contest.
Aug 18, 2022
Could start Sunday
The Mets are optimistic that Walker (back) could make his next scheduled start Sunday against the Phillies, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker exited Tuesday's start after just two innings due to back spasms, but he underwent an MRI on Wednesday that didn't reveal any structural damage. The right-hander said that the injury was "the worst pain [he] ever felt," but he's feeling better two days later. The Mets will see how he feels in the coming days before confirming him as Sunday's starter, but Walker is trending in the right direction.
Aug 17, 2022
MRI returns clean
Walker (back) underwent an MRI on Wednesday which showed no structural damage, though his availability for Sunday's scheduled start in Philadelphia remains up in the air, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander was pulled from Tuesday's start after two innings due to back spasms, but the injury appears to be a minor concern. However, it remains to be seen if Walker will be able to make his next scheduled turn through the rotation or if he'll need to be pushed back a few days.
Aug 16, 2022
Dealing with back spasms
Walker was removed from Tuesday's start in Atlanta due to back spasms, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker allowed a hit and two walks and didn't record a strikeout over two scoreless innings before being lifted from Tuesday's contest. It's the second consecutive unplanned bullpen game for the Mets, as Monday's starter Carlos Carrasco (oblique) also made an early exit due to an injury. The severity of the back issue remains unclear, leaving Walker's availability for his next turn through the rotation up in the air.
Aug 16, 2022
Exits early with apparent injury
Walker was removed from Tuesday's start against Atlanta after the second inning due to an apparent injury, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
New York lost Carlos Carrasco to an oblique strain Monday, and Walker has now been forced to exit after two scoreless frames a day later. The reason for Walker's removal remains unclear, but it's almost certainly an injury given he was pitching well and since the Mets are already coming off an impromptu bullpen game.
Aug 10, 2022
Cruises to 10th win
Walker (10-3) picked up the win in Wednesday's 10-2 rout of the Reds, giving up two runs on five hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The Mets handed the right-hander a 6-0 lead before the Reds got to Walker for a couple runs in the fourth inning, but he recovered to deliver his 11th quality start of the season. It was a solid rebound performance after he got hammered by Atlanta in his last outing, and he'll take a 3.43 ERA and 85:31 K:BB through 110.1 innings on the year into his next one.
Aug 5, 2022
Hammered in loss
Walker (9-3) allowed eight runs on seven hits while taking the loss against Atlanta on Friday. He pitched one inning and failed to record a strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Walker yielded four runs in the first inning, including a three-run shot by Eddie Rosario. The 29-year-old righty then coughed up a solo homer to Michael Harris to begin the second and was later charged with three more runs, two of which scored with Trevor Williams on the mound. Walker's ERA jumped from 2.79 to 3.45 through 104.1 frames after Friday's ugly outing. He also broke his streak of nine starts allowing fewer than four runs. Walker is lined up to face the Reds at home next week.
Aug 1, 2022
Gives up three in win
Walker (9-2) gave up three earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four over 5.2 innings to earn the win in a 9-3 victory over the Marlins on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
It wasn't the smoothest of starts for Walker but he did enough to earn the win by holding the Marlins to three earned runs while getting backed with plenty of run support. Walker threw over 100 pitches for the third time this season and tallied his ninth win of the year with the performance. The 29-year-old right-hander is having the best season of his career and boasts a 2.79 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. He is tentatively expected to make his next start in a division rival matchup against the Braves.
Jul 26, 2022
Quality start in win
Walker (8-2) earned the victory Tuesday against the Yankees, striking out three in six innings while allowing three runs on seven hits, a walk and a hit batsman.
ANALYSIS
Walker was greeted by back-to-back homers by Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo in the first inning. After that, Walker pitched around trouble with the only damage being a fourth-inning RBI groundout. It was the eighth straight quality start for the 29-year-old and he's gone 5-0 with a 2.12 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 51:11 K:BB in 51 innings in that span. His next start will likely be early next week in Washington.
Jul 17, 2022
Six strong in no-decision
Walker did not factor into the decision in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over six innings against the Cubs. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Make it seven consecutive quality starts for Walker to close the first half of the 2022 campaign. He's on a brilliant run and his ERA is all the way down to 2.55 after he finished with a 4.47 mark last season. The right-hander has benefited from a relatively soft schedule of late, but he's also aced his toughest tests. While his strikeout rate is down slightly overall, Walker has shown more of a strikeout punch lately, fanning 48 in his last 45 innings.
Jul 15, 2022
Friday's matchup called off
Walker and the Mets won't play Friday against the Cubs after the game was postponed due to inclement weather.
ANALYSIS
Walker has recorded quality starts in each of his last six outings and has posted a 1.85 ERA and 0.90 WHIP in 39 innings across that span. Friday's matchup will be made up as part of a doubleheader Saturday, and it wouldn't be surprising to see Walker take the mound for one of the matchups in the twin bill.
Jul 10, 2022
Fires seven shutout innings
Walker allowed three hits and a walk over seven shutout frames in Sunday's loss to the Marlins. He struck out seven and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Walker dominated the entire Marlins lineup aside from Jon Berti who knocked three singles Sunday. The 29-year-old's resurgent 2022 campaign continues as he lowered his season ERA to 2.63 with a 68:23 K:BB through 85.2 frames. Since coughing up four runs in a June 7 loss to the Padres, Walker has gone 4-0 while registering a 1.85 ERA over six starts. He's projected to face the Cubs in Chicago next week.
Jul 6, 2022
Hoping to stay in New York
Walker would like to sign a long-term deal with the Mets after his current contract expires, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander has a player option for 2023 that could be worth up to $8.5 million, but his performance so far this season would likely earn a much bigger salary on the open market. Walker indicated this week that if he does opt out, he would prefer to sign a longer deal with the Mets rather than head elsewhere. "I've been on short-term deals my last two free agencies," said Walker. "It would be nice to do a longer-term deal and kind of just be set up in one place and know that I'm going to be here for a couple years. Maybe have my family settle in a little bit. That would be nice." Any extension or contract talks with Walker likely won't happen until the season is over, but with Jacob deGrom, Chris Bassitt and Carlos Carrasco all on expiring deals as well, the Mets will have a lot of decisions to make on which members of the rotation to bring back and which to let go.
Jul 5, 2022
Fans nine in Monday's win
Walker (7-2) picked up the win in a 7-4 victory over the Reds on Monday, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out nine.
ANALYSIS
All the damage against the right-hander came on a mistake to Brandon Drury in the third inning that resulted in a three-run homer, but otherwise Walker was firmly in control, tossing 64 of 97 pitches for strikes. The 29-year-old also seems to have discovered some newfound dominance -- Walker has fanned at least nine batters in three of five outings during his current five-game quality start streak, going 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 36:7 K:BB through 32 innings over that stretch.
Jun 29, 2022
Shuts down Astros
Walker allowed four hits and two walks while striking out three across 7.1 scoreless innings Wednesday against the Astros. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Walker induced 12 groundball outs to keep Houston's bats in check and deliver his third scoreless outing of at least five innings on the season. He's been on a particularly strong run of late, turning in four consecutive quality starts, during which he's allowed only five earned runs across 26 innings. On the campaign, Walker owns a 2.72 ERA with a 52:21 K:BB across 72.2 frames.
Jun 25, 2022
Wins third straight start
Walker (6-2) picked up the win Friday, giving up three runs on eight hits and two walks over six innings in a 5-3 victory over the Marlins. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander continues to provide some stability to a battered Mets rotation, posting his third straight quality start with wins in all three. Walker has a 3.26 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 30:7 K:BB through 30.1 innings over five outings in June, but it's his season-long success at keeping the ball in the park that's been his greatest asset -- his 0.41 HR/9 would be by far a career-best mark, and he's only been taken deep in two of 12 starts so far in 2022.
Jun 19, 2022
Strikes out nine in win
Walker (5-2) allowed a run on two hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in 6.2 innings to earn the win Saturday over the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Walker limited the damage to an Avisail Garcia RBI double in the seventh inning. With the strong outing Saturday, Walker has quality starts in consecutive appearances for the first time this year. He's now at a 2.88 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 44:17 K:BB through 59.1 innings across 11 starts overall. He's projected for a rematch with the Marlins in Miami next week.
Jun 13, 2022
Fans 10 in win
Walker (4-2) earned the win during Sunday's 4-1 victory over the Angels, allowing one run on six hits and one walk with 10 strikeouts in six innings.
ANALYSIS
Walker surrendered one run on four hits in the first inning but settled down thereafter to quiet Los Angeles' offense and New York eventually rallied to end Walker's losing streak at two. Prior to Sunday's start, Walker hadn't struck out more than six in a game and was averaging just 4.8 K/9. The 29-year-old carries a 3.08 ERA and 1.25 WHIP into his next start, scheduled for next weekend against Miami.
Jun 8, 2022
Receives no help Tuesday
Walker (3-2) allowed four runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts in six innings, taking the loss Tuesday versus the Padres.
ANALYSIS
The Mets recorded only five baserunners (two hits, three hit batters), giving Walker virtually no help in the contest. It's the second start in a row the right-hander has received insufficient support, though his four runs allowed were also the most he's given up since May 5. He's generally pitched well with a 3.28 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 25:15 K:BB across 46.2 innings in nine starts this year. Walker will look to get back on track in a tough home matchup versus the Brewers next week.
Jun 3, 2022
Takes first loss Thursday
Walker (3-1) was the losing pitcher Thursday against the Dodgers, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out two over 5.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Walker held Los Angeles scoreless for four frames before yielding his first run in the fifth. The right-hander gave up another run with two outs in the sixth and was subsequently lifted for a reliever. The Mets couldn't get anything going offensively in the contest, resulting in Walker's first loss of the campaign. He's been solid overall this season, allowing three runs or fewer in all but one start. Walker is expected to next take the mound next week in San Diego.
May 29, 2022
Secures third win
Walker (3-0) earned the victory over Philadelphia on Saturday, pitching five innings and allowing two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out one batter.
ANALYSIS
Walker dealt with plenty of traffic on the basepaths in the outing -- he retired the side in order in only one frame. However, he kept the score under control and departed after the fifth inning with New York staked to a five-run lead. Walker recorded only six swinging strikes and notched only one strikeout for the third time this season, so he was far from dominant, but he got the job done to run his record to 3-0 on the campaign. His 19:12 K:BB across 35 innings is far from ideal, but Walker will carry a solid 2.83 ERA into his next start, which is scheduled to be a tough matchup in Los Angeles against the Dodgers on Thursday.
May 22, 2022
Seven scoreless in win
Walker (2-0) earned the win and struck out six in seven shutout innings, walking two and allowing five hits in a 2-0 victory Sunday in Colorado.
ANALYSIS
Walker induced 10 groundouts and did not allow an extra-base hit as he shut down the Rockies' offense. It was the second time in three starts that he held an opponent scoreless over seven innings. The 29-year-old has increased his pitch count in each of his six starts, tossing 97 pitches Sunday. With six punchouts, Walker set a season-high and raised his season rate to 5.4 strikeouts per nine innings, well below his career rate of 8.1. His next start will likely be next weekend against Philadelphia.
May 18, 2022
Another no-decision
Walker allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks across five innings during Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader versus St. Louis. He had four strikeouts and didn't factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
The veteran righty limited the Cardinals to one run through four frames, but he gave up two runs on three hits and two walks during his fifth and final inning. Walker threw a season-high 94 pitches (60 strikes) and appears built up to his full workload after spending nearly three weeks on the injured list in April with a shoulder issue. He has a 3.52 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 12:7 K:BB across 23 innings through five starts.
May 12, 2022
Shuts down Nats
Walker (1-0) allowed three hits and one walk while striking out one across seven shutout innings to earn the win Thursday against the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Walker bounced back after getting crushed by the Phillies in his last outing to tally his first win of the season. He induced only six swinging strikes across 85 pitches, but he limited the Nationals to one extra-base hit to stay out of trouble throughout his start. Walker has now allowed no earned runs in three of his four appearances this season -- the first was cut short by a shoulder issue -- and he now owns a 3.00 ERA across 18 innings. Enthusiasm about his surface stats should be tempered, as he's maintained only an 8:5 K:BB in that span.
May 6, 2022
Crushed by Phillies
Walker allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and two walks while striking out two across four innings Thursday against the Phillies. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Walker surrendered three hits and two walks in the first inning, which accounted for three of his earned runs. He also surrendered back-to-back homers to Nick Castellanos (wrist) and Bryce Harper in the fourth inning. Walker had yet to allow an earned run across his first two starts this season, but he wasn't sharp in Thursday's appearance.
May 1, 2022
Five shutout innings
Walker registered a no-decision during Saturday's 4-1 loss to Philadelphia, allowing two hits and two walks with one strikeout in five scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
Making his first start since April 11, Walker again held Philadelphia scoreless and stayed away from trouble aside from two baserunners in the third inning. He shouldered a near-regular workload as manager Buck Showalter let the 29-year-old go a solid 73 pitches before he turned it over to the bullpen. Through seven innings this season, Walker is yet to allow a run with an 0.57 WHIP and five strikeouts, though both starts have come against Philadelphia.
Apr 30, 2022
Activated ahead of start
Walker (shoulder) was activated off the injured list as expected ahead of his scheduled start Saturday against the Phillies, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker threw just two innings in his season debut before exiting with a shoulder injury that wound up costing him nearly three weeks. He's still not quite fully built up and is unlikely to get past 85 pitches in his return to action, though that could still give him a shot at a win if he pitches efficiently. Yoan Lopez was optioned to clear space on the roster.
Apr 29, 2022
On target for about 85 pitches
Walker (shoulder) remains on track to start Saturday against the Phillies and is stretched out to throw about 80-to-85 pitches and five innings, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker has been sidelined since exiting his season debut April 11 with right shoulder bursitis, but he'll return to the mound Saturday and will unsurprisingly face some workload restrictions. However, the limitations are fairly minor, and the right-hander should be cleared for a full workload within another start or two, assuming he avoids any setbacks.
Apr 25, 2022
Expected to start Saturday
Walker (shoulder) is expected to start Saturday against the Phillies, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker was cruising through his season debut, which also came against the Phillies, striking out four batters across two scoreless innings, before being removed due to a shoulder injury which required a trip to the injured list. He avoided a serious injury and didn't pause his throwing program for more than a few days, so he's ready to return to the rotation after a rehab start and a simulated game.
Apr 25, 2022
Feels good after sim game
Walker (shoulder) felt good after throwing four simulated innings Monday and remains on track to pitch during the weekend series against the Phillies, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker exited his season debut after just two innings due to right shoulder bursitis, but he's on track to return in less than three weeks. The Mets have yet to officially announce their plans for the weekend, though Walker would be on schedule to start Saturday's contest.
Apr 24, 2022
Should return next weekend
Walker (shoulder) will throw a simulated game Monday and is expected to start against the Phillies on Friday or Saturday if all goes well, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker recently threw 45 pitches during a bullpen session and should continue ramping up his workload during the simulated game Monday. The 29-year-old would be on three days rest if he were to start Friday, so it seems more likely he'll return from the injured list to pitch Saturday.
Apr 23, 2022
Could return Friday
Walker (shoulder) could return to the rotation Friday against the Phillies, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker lasted just two innings into his first start of the year, which also came against the Phillies, before exiting with a sore shoulder and landing on the injured list. He threw a rehab start at extended spring training and may need a simulated game before returning from the injured list, but it doesn't look as though he'll be out much longer.
Apr 22, 2022
Completes bullpen session
Walker (shoulder) threw a successful bullpen session Friday, and the Mets will see how he feels Saturday before determining the next step in his rehab program, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker threw about 45 pitches during a start at the Mets' extending spring training facility Wednesday, and it's good to see him quickly back on the mound for a bullpen session. It remains to be seen whether the 29-year-old is sent to the minors for a longer rehab start, but he's nearing his return from the injured list regardless.
Apr 20, 2022
Looks good in rehab start
Walker (shoulder) struck out seven over three scoreless innings in his start Wednesday at the Mets' extending spring training facility in Port St. Lucie, Fla., Britt Ghiroli of The Athletic reports. He allowed one hit and one walk.
ANALYSIS
According to Ghiroli, Walker recorded more than nine outs in the start, as he faced an extra hitter in the first and third innings to get some more work in. Though Walker's results were excellent, the Mets will likely see how he feels coming out of the start a day later before deciding whether to activate him from the 10-day injured list or send him to a minor-league affiliate for another rehab start. If the Mets go the former route, Walker could slot back into the big-league rotation for next week's series in St. Louis.
Apr 18, 2022
Rehab start on tap
Walker (shoulder) will make a rehab start at extended spring training in Port St. Lucie on Wednesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker sustained a shoulder injury April 11 but has been throwing recently. After tossing a bullpen session Sunday, the right-hander has been cleared for game action in Port St. Lucie. If his rehab start goes well, Walker will likely be able to rejoin the Mets' rotation during their series in St. Louis next week.
Apr 17, 2022
Throws bullpen Sunday
Walker (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Sunday, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
Although Walker was able to throw a bullpen after playing catch Thursday and Friday, manager Buck Showalter said afterward that the right-hander will likely require more than one rehab start prior to rejoining the major-league club. The Mets haven't yet revealed when his rehab assignment will begin, but it's possible that he'll be able to return to the majors sometime in early May.
Apr 15, 2022
Plays catch Friday
Walker (shoulder) played catch for a second straight day Friday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker felt good following Friday's throwing session, and he hopes to throw a bullpen Sunday, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports. He's hopeful that he'll be able to make a rehab start sometime next week, which would put him on track to join the Mets' rotation early the following week as long as he's built up enough and feeling good.
Apr 12, 2022
Requires rehab start
Walker (shoulder) will need to make a rehab start before returning from the injured list, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker left his start Monday against the Phillies after just two innings due to shoulder bursitis. Given that he'll require a rehab outing, it seems unlikely that he'll miss just one turn in the major-league rotation. David Peterson is likely to take his place temporarily, though the Mets have yet to officially announce their plans.
Apr 12, 2022
Lands on injured list
Walker was placed on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder bursitis Tuesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker himself wrote on Twitter that, "everything is all good" Tuesday after leaving his start Monday against the Phillies with right shoulder irritation, but "all good" was apparently in relation to a more severe injury. He'll still wind up missing at least one start and potentially a small handful, with the Mets yet to specify exactly when he'll be back. David Peterson pitched four scoreless innings of relief after his exit Monday and is presumably in line top fill his spot in the rotation.
Apr 12, 2022
Gets good news from MRI
Walker (shoulder) announced Tuesday in a post on his personal Twitter account that he was encouraged by the results of his MRI. "Everything is all good!" the pitcher wrote.
ANALYSIS
The Mets haven't provided an official update on what the MRI revealed, but Walker's Twitter post seemingly suggests that he's avoided a major injury. Even so, Walker's availability for his next scheduled outing Sunday at home against the Diamondbacks remains undetermined, and a trip to the injured list can't be dismissed at this point.
Apr 11, 2022
Sent for further testing
Walker (shoulder) will undergo an MRI on Tuesday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Walker is headed for further evaluation after leaving Monday's contest with right shoulder irritation. The Mets should know whether he'll require an extended absence after evaluating the right-hander's scans.
Apr 11, 2022
Exits with shoulder issue
Walker left Monday's start against the Phillies due to right shoulder irritation, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. He pitched two scoreless inning and struck out four prior to departing.
ANALYSIS
Walker is likely headed for further evaluation after being pulled early. He'll be considered day-to-day until the team knows more about the severity of the right-hander's injury.
Apr 8, 2022
Cleared for season debut Monday
Walker (knee) completed a 45-pitch bullpen session Friday and will start Monday's game against the Phillies, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander exited his final start of spring training Tuesday with knee soreness, but he had no issues during Friday's bullpen session and is ready for his 2022 debut. It's still worth monitoring Walker's status for the immediate future, as he was limited to begin spring training while recovering from a knee debridement procedure he underwent in January. He could at least face a workload restriction in his first couple outings of the campaign.
Apr 5, 2022
Exits early with sore knee
Walker left his start Tuesday against the Nationals after 1.1 innings due to a sore right knee, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The soreness stems from a debridement procedure Walker underwent in mid-January. While his last outing was a major disappointment, as he gave up six runs while recording just four outs, he's still expected to make his first turn in the rotation, which lines up for April 11 against the Phillies. He probably won't be able to pitch particularly deep in that game, as his early exit Tuesday prevented him from finishing building up his pitch count.

Another good outing
Walker threw 3.2 scoreless innings in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After throwing two scoreless frames in his spring training debut, Walker turned in another good performance Thursday. Most importantly, he built up to 54 pitches, 35 of which went for strikes. That should put Walker in good position to make the Opening Day roster and start the season in the rotation, though he may not throw more than five innings in his first regular season outing.
Mar 27, 2022
Sharp in spring debut
Walker allowed one hit over two scoreless innings without walking or striking out a batter in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
The one hit Walker gave up came on a sun-aided popup that didn't leave the infield. The veteran right-hander came into camp behind the rest of the Mets starting pitchers after undergoing knee surgery in January, but he appeared healthy Saturday and Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports that Walker believes there's still enough time left in the spring for him to build up to five innings for his first regular-season outing. While he'd likely be on an early pitch count, Walker may be able to slot into the fifth starter spot in the Opening Day rotation rather than having to skip a turn or two.
Mar 24, 2022
Scheduled for Saturday appearance
Walker (knee) is slated to pitch behind starter David Peterson in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker will finally be making his spring debut this weekend after a mid-January procedure on his right knee had kept him about two weeks behind the Mets' other starting pitchers thus far in camp. Though the southpaw hasn't said whether he plans to be ready to go for Opening Day, how long he works and how he fares in Saturday's contest will likely be a deciding factor. Walker earned his first All-Star nod in his first season with the Mets in 2021, but he faded badly in the second half to finish with a 4.47 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 146:55 K:BB in 159 frames.
Mar 20, 2022
Tosses batting practice Saturday
Walker (knee) was able to throw a live batting practice session Saturday.
ANALYSIS
A previous report indicated Walker would get the start for the Mets in Saturday's Grapefruit League game instead, but prospect Josh Walker got the nod for the game and Taijuan was limited to work on a back field. The right-handed Walker is behind the rest of the Mets' rotation as he recovers from minor knee surgery in January, but the fact that he was able to get some mound work in Saturday is encouraging. The club hasn't ruled him out yet for the Opening Day rotation, but it wouldn't be surprising to see Walker miss a turn or two in April as the Mets try to ensure he's 100 percent healthy.
Mar 17, 2022
Starting Grapefruit League opener
Walker (knee) will start Saturday's Grapefruit League opener against Washington, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker underwent a debridement procedure on his right knee in mid-January, and he's slightly behind the team's other starting pitchers to begin spring training. However, he'll still draw the start during the Mets' first spring game. The right-hander hasn't yet ruled himself out for Opening Day but said that he won't rush to return by the start of the regular season. If Walker is unavailable to begin the year, Tyler Megill and David Peterson would likely compete for a spot in the rotation.
Mar 15, 2022
Not ruling self out for Opening Day
Walker (knee) said Tuesday that he believes he's about a week or two behind the Mets' other starting pitchers, but he's not yet willing to rule himself out from being part of the Opening Day rotation, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Walker was since thrown off a mound since reporting to big-league camp at the conclusion of the lockout, he doesn't appear to have as many bullpen sessions under his belt as his fellow starters at this point in the spring. He underwent a debridement procedure on his right knee Jan. 14, and though he's since made a recovery from that injury, he wasn't able to do his typical offseason buildup program while he was on the mend from surgery. Walker noted that he won't try to rush to be ready for the start of the season, so at this point, it seems more likely than not that he won't break camp with the big club. If Walker ends up on the injured list to begin the season, Tylor Megill and David Peterson would likely represent the top candidates to step in as the Mets' temporary No. 5 starter.
Mar 14, 2022
Throwing off mound
Walker (knee) is throwing off a mound and going through a running program as he returns from a debridement procedure on his right knee in January, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Buck Showalter said earlier in the day there's a chance the 29-year-old is ready for the first turn through the rotation, and there's now a better idea of where Walker currently stands in his rehab program. The right-hander will continue the mound work and running progression until receiving clearance to further ramp up his rehab.
Mar 14, 2022
Behind schedule early in camp
Manager Buck Showalter revealed Monday that Walker underwent a right knee procedure on Jan. 14, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker is behind some of the Mets' other starting pitchers early in camp following his offseason surgery, but Showalter is hopeful that the right-hander still has a chance to be ready in time for Opening Day. In his first season with the Mets last year, Walker posted a 4.47 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 30 appearances (29 starts). While any potential absence to begin the 2022 campaign would likely be a short-term one, Tylor Megill and David Peterson would be candidates to fill in if Walker is forced to miss time.

Strong start wasted Wednesday
Walker didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Marlins, giving up two runs on two hits and three walks over 7.1 innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
He took a shutout into the eighth inning, but after Lewin Diaz led off the frame with a double and Walker then issued a one-out walk to Eddy Alvarez, the right-hander got the hook after 90 pitches (57 strikes) and had to watch as Seth Lugo let both inherited runners score plus one more, costing Walker his eighth win. He wraps up the 2021 campaign with a 4.47 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 146:55 K:BB through 159 innings.
Sep 22, 2021
Knocked out early
Walker (7-11) allowed six runs on six hits and two walks with one strikeout over two innings, taking the loss in Wednesday's 12-5 defeat to the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
This was another disastrous outing for Walker, as the right-hander labored through two innings of painful baseball. Kyle Schwarber threw a jab in the first inning with a solo homer, then landed the knockout punch in the second with a three-run round-tripper. Walker has now allowed nine home runs in his last five starts and has pitched to an 8.10 ERA over that same span. With a contract that could feasibly see the 29-year-old remain in Queens for two more seasons, the Mets better hope that the one-time All-Star figures things out.
Sep 12, 2021
Shelled for three homers
Walker allowed five earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out eight across six innings in the loss to the Yankees on Saturday. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Walker surrendered three home runs, all in the second inning. All five runs he allowed came in that inning via home runs. He has struggled recently, posting a 6.85 ERA in 22.1 innings over his last four starts. His next start is scheduled for Friday against the Phillies.
Sep 5, 2021
Struggles in no-decision
Walker allowed six runs on six hits and three walks with six strikeouts in 4.1 innings in a no-decision versus Washington on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The Mets gave Walker a four-run lead before he ever got to the mound, but he allowed a solo home run to Lane Thomas and a two-run shot to Josh Bell in the bottom of the first. The right-hander then allowed three more runs before Jeurys Familia relieved him to finish the fifth inning. Walker owns a 4.15 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 129:49 K:BB through 138.2 innings this season, but he's gone 0-6 with four no-decisions in his last 10 starts. He's in line for a home start in the Subway Series versus the Yankees next weekend.
Aug 31, 2021
Set to appear in suspended game
The Mets are expected to deploy Walker as their "starting pitcher" Tuesday in the resumption of their suspended game against the Marlins from April 11, Field Level Media reports.
ANALYSIS
Marcus Stroman will be credited as the starter for the game, which was suspended with one out and a runner on first base in the top of the first inning. Since Stroman last pitched Saturday and won't be asked to pitch on two days' rest, Walker will stay on turn in the rotation and should be in line for a relatively normal outing, despite technically entering the game as a reliever. Meanwhile, Trevor Williams will be called on to make a spot start later Tuesday, when the Mets and Marlins play their normally scheduled game, which will be seven innings. Walker will presumably be in store for a normal start the next time his turn in the rotation comes up Sunday in Washington.
Aug 26, 2021
Stuck with loss in quality start
Walker (7-9) took the loss Wednesday, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and a walk over six-plus innings as the Mets fell 3-2 to the Giants. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander was nursing a 2-1 lead heading into the seventh inning, but Kris Bryant reached on a Jonathan Villar error to open the frame followed by an Alex Dickerson single. Walker then got the hook after 74 pitches (44 strikes) and had to watch as Aaron Loup served up a game-winning double to Brandon Crawford. Walker hasn't won a game since July 3, but not for lack of trying as he has three quality starts in his last four outings. On the season, he carries a 3.82 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 117:46 K:BB through 129.2 innings.
Aug 20, 2021
Takes loss against Dodgers
Walker (7-8) took the loss in Thursday's 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Dodgers, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk with four strikeouts in six innings.
ANALYSIS
Walker (7-8) took the loss in Thursday's 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Dodgers, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk with four strikeouts in six innings.
Aug 14, 2021
Flirts with no-hitter
Walker allowed one run on two hits and three walks with eight strikeouts through 6.2 innings, taking a no-decision in Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Walker entered Saturday with a NL-worst 6.70 ERA in his last nine starts and 10 home runs allowed in his last four appearances. So, naturally, he took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against the Dodgers and racked up the most strikeouts he's recorded since June 15. But, the 29-year-old fell victim to the long ball yet again when Will Smith ended Walker's bid for history with a solo homer that broke up the no-no and the shutout. The right-hander would allow another hit in the form of a Corey Seager double and a walk before manager Luis Rojas emerged from the dugout to take the ball. While his outing did come to an unsavory end, Walker proved that the pitcher who was named an All-Star for the first time this season is still in there somewhere. He'll aim to build on this outing when he faces the Dodgers again on Thursday.
Aug 9, 2021
Allows three homers in loss
Walker (7-7) was tagged with the loss Sunday against Philadelphia after allowing three runs on four hits and a walk across six innings. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Walker's issues with the long ball continue, as he has given up at least two homers in four straight outings and three in two of those contests. The right-hander has lost in four straight appearances as well, posting a 7.84 ERA during that span.
Aug 4, 2021
Struggles continue Tuesday
Walker (7-6) took the loss Tuesday, giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks over 5.2 innings as the Mets were downed 5-4 by the Marlins. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Heading into the All-Star break, Walker held a sparkling 2.50 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. Since then he's been in a tailspin, getting tagged for at least four runs in four straight starts and serving up multiple homers in three straight, including shots by Alex Jackson and Isan Diaz (combined four homers in the majors this year) on Tuesday. Walker's ERA now stands at 3.86, but the Mets' lack of rotation depth due to injuries will force the club to keep trotting him out to the mound every five days or so, hoping he can turn things around.
Jul 30, 2021
Surrenders five earned runs
Walker (7-5) allowed five earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven across five innings to take the loss Thursday against Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Walker held Atlanta scoreless through three innings. However, he fell apart late in the outing, highlighted by a pair of home runs in the fourth frame. Since maintaining a 2.50 ERA and 1.03 WHIP across his first 16 starts this season, Walker has allowed 16 earned runs across his last three outings -- spanning 9.1 innings. That's inflated his ERA to 3.71 on the campaign.
Jul 25, 2021
Dealing with minor issue
Walker felt a pinch in his left shoulder during a swing in Saturday's loss to the Blue Jays, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker struggled for the second consecutive start, as he allowed six earned runs on eight hits and two walks across four innings to take the loss. However, the bigger problem could be the the injury he picked up during the outing. After the game, Walker downplayed the issue and would not tell reporters the nature of the injury. However, manager Luis Rojas disclosed the shoulder pain. At this point, there seems to be minimal concern from both the player and team, meaning Walker should still be able to make his next turn through the rotation if no further information emerges.
Jul 18, 2021
Nightmarish start Sunday
Walker allowed six runs (five earned) on four hits and four walks while retiring just one batter in Sunday's game versus Pittsburgh. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
It was arguably the worst outing of the year for the right-hander, but he was able to avoid taking the loss as the Mets rallied to win the game. Walker's ERA ballooned from 2.50 to 2.99 after the abbreviated start, and he has a 1.12 WHIP and 89:34 K:BB through 90.1 innings this season. The 28-year-old lines up to start next weekend versus Toronto after throwing just 35 pitches (17 strikes) Sunday.
Jul 9, 2021
No-decision versus Pittsburgh
Walker allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out two in five innings in a no-decision versus Pittsburgh on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Originally scheduled to pitch Thursday, Walker instead took the mound a day later due to rain. He didn't pitch deep into Friday's contest, and the Mets' offense didn't come alive until after he was out of the contest, leaving him with just his second no-decision in his last eight starts. Walker has enjoyed arguably the best season of his career with a 2.50 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 89:30 K:BB through 90 innings. He could make his next start in Pittsburgh coming out of the All-Star break.
Jul 8, 2021
Start shifted to Friday
Walker will start Friday against the Pirates after Thursday's game was postponed due to rain, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker will simply have his start pushed back a day, but he will draw the same matchup and pitch in a full nine-inning game. He's maintained an excellent 2.44 ERA and 1.01 WHIP across 85 innings this season and should have the chance to build on those numbers in an exploitable matchup.
Jul 8, 2021
Thursday's start postponed
Walker won't start Thursday against the Pirates since the game was postponed due to rain, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The game will be made up via a doubleheader Saturday. The Mets have yet to announce their updated pitching plans, but Walker should either start Friday's contest or one of the games in Saturday's twin bill.
Jul 3, 2021
Earns seventh victory
Walker (7-3) allowed two runs on two hits and two walks over 5.2 innings in a win over the Yankees on Saturday. He also had five strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Walker was working on a no-hitter in the sixth inning until Aaron Judge took him deep to center field with one out. He departed the game two batters later having already thrown 106 pitches, but left with a plenty-comfortable 8-2 lead. Walker has been one of the top free-agent signings of the 2021 season, holding opponents to three runs or fewer in 13 of his 15 starts while posting a 2.44 ERA that ranks 10th in the National League. He's lined up to make his next start against the Pirates next week.
Jul 2, 2021
Friday's start postponed
Walker won't start Friday against the Yankees after the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker received some extra rest ahead of Friday's scheduled start, and the Mets haven't yet announced when he could take the mound next. Friday's matchup will be made up as part of a doubleheader Sunday. The right-hander lightly played catch before the postponement was announced, but he could still start Saturday or in one of the two games during Sunday's twin bill.
Jun 28, 2021
Starting Friday with extra rest
Walker will make his next start Friday against the Yankees, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander previously lined up to take the mound Wednesday in Atlanta after starting in last Friday's twin bill, but he'll instead be pushed back a couple days to receive some extra rest before facing the Mets' cross-town rival. Walker will come out of June having made five starts with a 3.26 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 33:6 K:BB across 30.1 innings during the month.
Jun 25, 2021
Gives up one run
Walker allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out five in five innings in the win over the Phillies in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Walker gave up 10 hits in his last start, but he was much more effective Friday. However, the Mets didn't get on the board until the seventh inning, which forced him to settle for a no-decision in the matinee. In his six starts since he returned from the injured list, he's posted a 2.80 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 35.1 innings. Walker tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against Atlanta on Wednesday.
Jun 20, 2021
Charged with third loss
Walker (6-3) allowed four runs on 10 hits and no walks while striking out five in 6.1 innings to take the loss against the Nationals on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Walker had earned wins in each of his last two outings and struck out 21 batters in 14 innings during that time, but he was unable to keep his success going Sunday. He gave up three home runs to Kyle Schwarber prior to his removal, and the right-hander has now posted a 2.42 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 74.1 innings across 13 starts this year. Walker tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Phillies on Saturday.
Jun 15, 2021
Whiffs 12 in win
Walker (6-2) picked up the win Tuesday after holding the Cubs to two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out 12 across seven innings.
ANALYSIS
Walker's only blemish of the night came from a two-run homer by Javier Baez in the third inning. Otherwise the right-hander displayed impressive control, notching a career-high 12 strikeouts while not issuing any walks for the third time this year. Walker, who has been one of the best pitchers in the National League this season, has now allowed one run or fewer in six of his last seven starts, lowering his ERA to 2.12 and his WHIP to 1.00. The 28-year-old is slated to take the mound again on the road Sunday at Washington.
Jun 10, 2021
Dominant against Baltimore
Walker (5-2) earned the win Wednesday against the Orioles after tossing seven innings of one-run ball, giving up five hits and a walk while fanning nine.
ANALYSIS
Walker had gone three straight outings without pitching more than five complete innings, but he was lights out in this one and tamed the Orioles with ease. The right-hander has now allowed one or fewer runs in five of his last six starts and has reduced his ERA to an impressive 2.07 as a result. He will attempt to carry this strong run of form into his next start, scheduled for next week at home against the Cubs.
Jun 4, 2021
Takes loss against San Diego
Walker (4-2) was tagged with the loss Thursday against the Padres after allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and four walks while fanning two across 5.0 innings.
ANALYSIS
Walker dropped a decision for the first time since April 20 and didn't have his best stuff, as he had more walks than strikeouts for the first time this season while also tying his season-worst mark in runs allowed. The command issues have been quite a problem for Walker this year, as he owns a 3.8 BB/9 that would rank as the second-worst mark of his career if not improved the rest of the year. He's scheduled to start next week against the Orioles on the road.
May 29, 2021
Returns for scheduled start
Walker (side) was activated off the injured list as expected ahead of his scheduled start Saturday against Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Walker was originally scheduled to return after missing the minimum 10 days due to side soreness, but a postponement Friday meant he had to wait one extra day. He'd pitched quite well prior to the injury, as his 2.05 ERA and 0.98 WHIP should still look good even after his .214 BABIP rises. Yennsy Diaz was optioned in a corresponding move.
May 28, 2021
Return from IL postponed
Walker (side) won't be activated from the injured list to start Friday versus Atlanta since the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker's return from the 10-day IL will be delayed by a day, as he's now expected to take the mound Saturday, per Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record. The Mets have yet to indicate whether Jacob deGrom will pitch Sunday as previously scheduled, or if Saturday's original starter, David Peterson, will receive the nod.
May 27, 2021
Slated to return Friday
Walker (side) is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list to start Friday's game against Atlanta, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker has been on the 10-day injured list since May 18 after he exited his last start with side soreness, but he'll return to the active roster after a minimal stay on the IL. The right-hander had posted a 0.53 ERA and 0.53 WHIP in 17 innings across his last three starts.
May 25, 2021
Throws live BP
Walker (side) was seen throwing live batting practice prior to Tuesday's game against the Rockies, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker left his start on May 17 with soreness in his side, but it appears that the right hander's stint on the injured list could be coming to an end soon. The Mets have yet to announce when Walker could rejoin the rotation, but him taking the hill within the next week doesn't seem out of the question.
May 19, 2021
Placed on injured list
Walker (side) was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker exited Monday's start against Atlanta due to left side tightness, and he's reportedly felt good recently. However, the team will elect to place him on the injured list to avoid a long-term injury. It's not yet clear how much time Walker will miss, but the Mets could utilize a four-man rotation in the future since they have a day off Thursday.
May 18, 2021
MRI comes back clean
Walker's (side) MRI came back clean Tuesday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker left his start Monday against Atlanta with left side tightness, an issue he's apparently been dealing with for a few weeks. He hasn't been placed on the injured list, however, so the clean MRI could mean he doesn't wind up missing any starts.
May 17, 2021
Headed for MRI
Walker (side) is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Tuesday, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker has been dealing with the side issue for the last few weeks, per Mike Puma of the New York Post, and the team believes it's best to examine the issue further. His status moving forward will be dictated by his test results.
May 17, 2021
Exits early with injury
Walker was removed from Monday's start against Atlanta after three scoreless innings due to left side tightness, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker was cruising along before appearing to be in some kind of discomfort, resulting in his removal. The severity of the injury is not known at this point.
May 12, 2021
Delivers another strong start
Walker (3-1) earned the win Wednesday versus the Orioles after allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks over seven innings.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old blanked Baltimore through six frames, but it scratched across a run on a walk, a single and a groundout during the seventh inning. Walker has won three of his past four starts and given up only five earned runs across 27 innings during that stretch.
May 6, 2021
Stellar in win Thursday
Walker (2-1) allowed one run (zero earned) on one hit while striking out eight across seven innings to earn the win over the Cardinals on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Walker was near perfect Thursday, allowing just one single to Nolan Arenado in the second inning who eventually scored on a sacrifice fly. Walker retired the last 18 batters he faced. His eight strikeouts matched his season high and it was the first start that he didn't issue a walk. The 28-year old lowered his ERA to 2.38 and WHIP to 1.03 through six appearances. He's done a great job preventing the long ball, allowing just one home run in 34 innings.
May 2, 2021
Settles for no-decision
Walker didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 5-4 win over the Phillies, giving up four runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The Mets staked Walker to a 4-0 lead before he even took the mound for the bottom of the first inning, but the right-hander let a potential second straight win slip through his fingers as he gave up two-spots in the second and sixth. He threw 94 pitches (66 strikes) before exiting. Walker will take a 3.00 ERA and 27:15 K:BB through 27 innings into his next outing.
Apr 25, 2021
Notches first win
Walker (1-1) earned the win Sunday against the Nationals after tossing seven scoreless innings. He allowed three hits and three walks while walking four.
ANALYSIS
Walker tossed his best outing of the season, pitching more than six innings for the first time and also nothing his second quality start. It was his first scoreless outing of the campaign too, though it's worth noting Walker has yet to allow more than two runs in any of his four starts. He owns a strong 2.14 ERA through four appearances.
Apr 21, 2021
Wild in loss
Walker (0-1) allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits and six walks while striking out seven across 3.2 innings to take the loss Tuesday to the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
It was a strange outing for Walker, as he required 91 pitches to record 11 outs. However, he punched out seven in that span, generating 19 called strikes and 11 swinging strikes. That portion of his effort was overshadowed by six free passes, and he has now walked 11 batters across 14 innings this season. Because Walker has yet to allow a home run, he's been able to maintain a 3.21 ERA, though that will almost certainly change if he continues to allow so many hitters to reach base. Walker is currently projected to draw his next start Sunday against Washington.
Apr 14, 2021
Fans eight in no-decision
Walker didn't factor into the decision in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Phillies, allowing one run on three hits and three walks over 4.1 innings in a 4-3 win. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
The walks and K's elevated his pitch count, and Walker got the hook after 80 pitches (43 strikes), but he wouldn't have been in line for the win as the Mets needed eight innings to secure the victory. The right-hander has looked good to begin his stint in New York, and he'll take a 2.61 ERA and 12:5 K:BB through 12.1 innings into his next start, set for April 20 on the road against the Cubs.
Apr 8, 2021
Six strong innings
Walker allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four across six innings Thursday against the Marlins. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Walker held the Marlins scoreless through five innings before faltering slightly to allow both of his earned runs in the sixth. However, the start was overwhelmingly positive as he allowed only one extra-base hit and averaged 95.4 mph with his fastball. Walker threw 87 pitches, meaning he should be ready to work fairly deep into the game again in his next start -- currently projected for Tuesday at home against the Phillies.
Mar 24, 2021
Pitching in 'B' game
Walker will now pitch in a "B" game Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Walker was initially scheduled to start in Wednesday's Grapefruit League matchup against the Cardinals, but Corey Oswald will take the mound for the Mets instead. The Mets haven't given any indication that Walker is dealing with an injury, but he'll pitch against teammates in Port St. Lucie rather than facing the Cardinals.
Mar 20, 2021
Faces minimum over four innings
Walker tossed four scoreless innings in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander actually faced the minimum 12 batters during his outing thanks to two double plays started by Jeff McNeil. Walker has a 3.00 ERA and 5:3 K:BB through six innings over his first two spring outings, and is on track to be ready for his first turn through the rotation.
Mar 11, 2021
Getting stretched out
Walker tossed 36 pitches in his first game action of the spring Tuesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander breezed through the first inning before running into trouble in the second, but his workload was the most important takeaway. Walker has enough time to get stretched out to about 90 pitches before Opening Day, and he's expected to slot into the No. 4 spot in the Mets' rotation.
Feb 19, 2021
Reaches deal with Mets
Walker agreed to a two-year, $20 million contract with the Mets on Friday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The deal also includes a player option for 2023, as Walker cashes in after delivering a 2.70 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 50:19 K:BB across 53.1 innings (11 starts) during 2020. The veteran right-hander should open the season as the Mets' No. 4 starter behind Jacob deGrom, Carlos Carrasco and Marcus Stroman.
Sep 25, 2020
Perfect in short outing
Walker didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 10-5 win over the Orioles, retiring all nine batters he faced before giving way to the bullpen. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
With an eye on setting up his postseason rotation, Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo pulled Walker after only 42 pitches (28 strikes), denying the right-hander a chance at his fifth win of the year, or perhaps something more historic. Since joining the Jays, Walker has posted a stellar 1.37 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 25:11 K:BB over 26.1 innings.

Strikes out eight in win
Walker (4-3) allowed one run on four hits and two walks over six innings Sunday, striking out eight and earning the victory over Philadelphia.
ANALYSIS
Walker rebounded well from his brutal start against the Yankees on Tuesday, allowing just one run against the Phillies on Sunday. After yielding an RBI double to Didi Gregorius in the first inning, he silenced Philadelphia's lineup and cruised through five straight scoreless frames. The 28-year-old lowered his ERA to 2.86 across 50.1 innings. Walker will make his final regular-season start Saturday at home against Baltimore.
Sep 16, 2020
Early exit Tuesday
Walker (3-3) took the loss Tuesday as the Blue Jays were routed 20-6 by the Yankees, giving up seven runs (but only one earned) on six hits over 1.2 innings. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
After a scoreless first inning, the right-hander gave up a one-out double to Gio Urshela in the second before Derek Fisher dropped a routine fly ball on the warning track that would have been the second out of the inning. After Walker struck out Gary Sanchez for what should have been the inning's third out, the floodgates opened and the Yankees laced four straight hits to chase him from the game, including back-to-back homers by Luke Voit and Aaron Hicks. The error by Fisher at least saved Walker's ERA -- he'll take a 3.05 mark with a 1.26 WHIP and 38:17 K:BB through 44.1 innings into his next outing Sunday in Philadelphia.
Sep 8, 2020
Four scoreless innings
Walker allowed two hits and five walks while striking out three across four innings Tuesday against the Yankees. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Walker battled his control -- he walked three batters in the opening frame -- which led to the short outing. However, he worked out of danger throughout the start and has now allowed only two earned runs across 15.2 innings with the Blue Jays. He currently lines up to make his next start Tuesday in a rematch at the Yankees.
Aug 29, 2020
Earns win with new team
Walker (3-2) allowed four hits and three walks while striking out four across six scoreless innings to earn the win Saturday against the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Walker worked effectively in his Blue Jays debut. He worked into trouble on a few occasions -- particularly due to struggles with his control -- but got timely outs to work six scoreless frames. It's been a mixed bag to this point in the season for Walker, as he's tossed three scoreless outings but also two of allowing of four or more earned runs. That's evened out to a 3.27 ERA with a 29:7 K:BB across 33 frames. He's currently projected to draw his second start with Toronto on Thursday at Boston.
Aug 28, 2020
Starting Saturday vs. O's
Walker will start Saturday against the Orioles, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.
ANALYSIS
He will make his Blue Jays debut in Buffalo against an Orioles team that ranks 17th in the majors with a 98 wRC+ against right-handed pitching. His second start as a Blue Jay figures to be next week in Boston.
Aug 27, 2020
Dealt to Toronto
The Blue Jays acquired Walker from the Mariners on Thursday in exchange for a minor-league player to be named later, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
With the rebuilding Mariners sitting on a 12-19 record for the season and with Walker signed to an affordable one-year, $2 million deal, the right-hander was widely expected to be moved prior to the Aug. 31 trade deadline. The Mariners ultimately found a suitor in the Blue Jays, who were in serious need of another proven arm in the rotation after Matt Shoemaker (lat), Trent Thornton (elbow) and Nate Pearson (elbow) were all placed on the injured list in the last week and a half. Walker has bounced back well thus far from his April 2018 Tommy John surgery, posting a 4.00 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 25:8 K:BB through 27 innings over his five starts. He had been scheduled to start the first game of the Mariners' doubleheader Thursday versus the Padres, so Seattle will have to find a replacement for Walker on short notice.

Gets ball in first game of twin bill
Walker is slated to start the first game of the Mariners' doubleheader with the Padres on Thursday, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker had been in line to start Wednesday before the contest was postponed. The Mariners will keep their six-man rotation in order and have Walker take the hill for the first game of the twin bill, while Yusei Kikuchi stays on turn to pitch in the second contest. Walker, who is a prime candidate to be dealt prior to the Aug. 31 trade deadline, has posted a 4.00 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 25:8 K:BB across 27 innings this season.
Aug 26, 2020
Wednesday's game postponed
Walker won't pitch as scheduled Wednesday against the Padres as the two teams agreed to postpone the game in protest of the recent police shooting in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Brewers and Reds took the same course of action earlier in the evening, and the Mariners and Padres have elected to follow suit. It's unclear if/when the contest will be made up.
Aug 25, 2020
Drawing trade interest
Walker, who's put together back-to-back quality starts, is drawing strong trade interest prior to the Aug. 31 deadline, Brandon Gustafson of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander's successful homecoming to the team that originally drafted him back in 2010 may be short-lived one, as Walker may be a victim of his own success to an extent. Contending teams -- a descriptor that constitutes a much larger pool of clubs this season due to the expanded playoff format -- are always on the hunt for more starting pitching, and Gustafson notes the fact Kendall Graveman (neck), who could have also been a potential trade candidate had he remained healthy, is now out of the equation only makes Walker even more appealing. Through five starts, Walker owns a 2-2 record, 4.00 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and has his average fastball velocity back to under 1 mph lower than what it was prior to Tommy John surgery.
Aug 20, 2020
Whiffs eight in win
Walker (2-2) earned the win Wednesday after holding the Dodgers to three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out eight across seven innings.
ANALYSIS
All of Walker's damage came via the long ball during what turned out to be a solid outing. The 28-year-old gave up a pair of home runs to Max Muncy and Joc Pederson in the second inning, followed by a solo homer to Cody Bellinger in the third. From there, Walker silenced a volatile Los Angeles lineup, fanning a season-high tying eight batters. The right-hander will carry a 4.00 ERA and 1.07 WHIP into next Wednesday's showdown at San Diego.
Aug 13, 2020
Tosses six strong innings
Walker didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's contest between the Mariners and the Rangers. He gave up an unearned run on six hits and one walk while fanning five across six innings.
ANALYSIS
Walker has been extremely inconsistent in his first four starts and has alternated strong performances with some woeful ones. He has given up just four earned runs in 16.2 innings across his last three starts after beginning the season with a poor effort against Houston in which he gave up five earned runs in just 3.1 frames. The talent is clearly there, but Walker now needs to find consistency. His next scheduled start is slated for Aug. 19 at home against the Dodgers.
Aug 6, 2020
Wild in loss
Walker (1-2) took the loss against the Angels on Thursday, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing four runs on three hits and three walks while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
Walker allowed only one hit -- a Shohei Ohtani homer -- through three innings, but he fell apart in the fourth and was unable to get out of the frame. A lack of control was primarily to blame, as Walker walked three batters and hit another in the inning, helping the Angels tally three runs. The right-hander was superb in his previous start but has otherwise struggled early in the season, and he now holds an unappealing 5.79 ERA and 1.21 WHIP while compiling a 12:6 K:BB through 14 innings. He'll head to Texas to take on the Rangers on Wednesday in his next scheduled start.
Aug 1, 2020
Whiffs eight in win
Walker (1-1) earned the win Friday by holding the A's scoreless and striking out eight across seven innings. He allowed one hit and a pair of walks.
ANALYSIS
Walker retired his first eight batters before issuing a walk to Tony Kemp in the third inning. The only hit he gave up was a leadoff double to Ramon Laureano in the fourth. It was a long awaited successful outing for the 27-year-old, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018. Walker will look to stay in the win column with a favorable matchup against the Angels on Thursday.
Jul 25, 2020
Rocked by Astros
Walker (0-1) gave up five runs on seven hits and a walk in 3.1 innings. He struck out one and took the loss Saturday versus the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Walker wasn't particularly bad until the fourth inning. He gave up a solo home run to Yuli Gurriel and an RBI double to Kyle Tucker before Scott Servais pulled him from the game. Reliever Brandon Brennan allowed two inherited runners to be tacked onto Walker's line. It was an ugly start to Walker's second stint as a Mariner after three years with the Diamondbacks, two of which were mostly wiped out by Tommy John surgery. The 27-year-old right-hander will search for his first win Friday at home against the Athletics.
Jul 22, 2020
Solid in final intrasquad start
Walker threw 60 pitches over 3.1 innings in Sunday's intrasquad game, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander had to work around some trouble in two of his innings, but he finished the outing allowing only three hits and three walks but no runs. Walker encouragingly also recorded three strikeouts and commented after the game that he felt strong and "definitely" would be ready for this first start of the season Saturday against the Astros.
Jul 13, 2020
Arm looks strong in intrasquad game
Walker was consistently hitting 93 mph with his fastball during his two innings in Monday's intrasquad game, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander has a big year ahead of him after missing much of the last two seasons with injuries, and thus far, every step he's taken since spring training has been favorable. The latest was his pair of frames Monday, when Walker logged the first of what's slated to be three intrasquad game starts and allowed just an infield single and a walk while recording three strikeouts. Walker even got scalding hot teammate Kyle Lewis, who'd hit three home runs over the team's two prior intrasquad outings, to ground out, and after the game, the Mariners' projected No. 3 starter offered his thoughts of how the three-month-plus shutdown helped him further prepare for what he hopes will be a successful comeback campaign. "It gave my arm a chance to heal," Walker said. "Anytime you can do that, you should feel good and strong. And that's what I feel like right now. I feel really strong. I like where I'm at. Now it's just about building the innings and getting comfortable with the ups and downs. We're getting there."

Throws live BP in camp
Walker threw a live batting practice session against Kyle Seager and Dee Gordon in Tuesday's summer camp session, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. "I feel good, my arm feels good. I like where I'm at, " Walker said. "It's usually a marathon to get ready and keep going, but it's almost like a sprint now. We have three weeks to get ready. Obviously we have to do it smart and listen to our bodies, but we don't have much time to get ready and going."
ANALYSIS
Walker was encouragingly hitting 90-93 mph with his fastball during the session, which was his first live BP of camp. The 27-year-old, who is on the comeback trail after reconstructive elbow surgery and a shoulder capsule issue wiped out much of his last two seasons, is set for a back-end rotation spot to open 2020. Walker was able to keep his arm in condition during the shutdown by building a garage gym in his home, playing catch regularly with a friend and eventually accessing the Mariners' spring training facility in Peoria, Arizona once it reopened in late May. The shortened 60-game season might be a silver lining for Walker, as it sets the right-hander up for a more gradual return to the mound after pitching just 14 regular-season innings since the beginning of the 2018 campaign.
May 27, 2020
Present for restart of workouts
Walker was one of several Mariners present at the team's spring complex in Peoria, Arizona on Tuesday for informal workouts, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Mariners became the latest team to start welcoming players back into either their home or spring facility Tuesday, allowing them to work out in groups of three for two-hour windows. Walker was able to play catch and run under staff supervision, and johns notes the team has instructed to players to keep their volume and intensity at a "winter workout level" for the time being until there is more clarity on a possible 2020 season. Before spring training was suspended, The veteran right-hander had built up some momentum for what was to be a comeback season of sorts for him, displaying good velocity and also flashing a new spiked curve that was good enough to strike out the Brewers' Christian Yelich in Walker's one spring start.
Apr 16, 2020
Encouraging performance in spring
Walker impressed this spring with his velocity and performance in his one Cactus League start, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander signed shortly after spring camp opened and was treated cautiously by the Mariners after undergoing Tommy John surgery and dealing with a sprained shoulder capsule over the last two seasons. Walker was primarily limited to live batting practices and simulated games, but he flashed a mid-90s fastball and struck out Christian Yelich with his new spiked curve during his one spring start against the Brewers. Walker will head into any ramp-up period before the delayed start to the regular season with a seemingly secure grasp on the No. 3 spot in the rotation.
Mar 10, 2020
Impresses in first spring start
Walker started a Cactus League loss to the Brewers on Monday and allowed an earned run on four hits and a wild pitch across three innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The deliberate approach the Mariners took with Walker to start spring was seemingly validated in Monday's start, as the oft-injured right-hander looked impressive while facing big-league hitters in Mariners uniform for the first time since September 2016. Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports Walker's appearance got off to an inauspicious start with a leadoff home run by Lorenzo Cain, but Walker impressively rebounded and ultimately struck out both Cain and Christian Yelich -- the latter on a new spike curveball -- during his 43-pitch outing. Kramer adds that Walker's velocity topped out at 95 mph, a sign that both his previously troublesome elbow and shoulder are in fine shape. Manager Scott Servais was impressed with the new version of the breaking pitch that Walker deployed, talking it up as a weapon his likely No. 5 starter could find consistent success with. "Taijuan's curve is quite a bit different," Servais said. "We talked about some mechanical changes that he's made. He's shortened up his arm stroke. He a

Feels good after latest outing
Walker reported no ill effects a day after having thrown 31 pitches in an intersquad game Wednesday, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander has taken very deliberate but setback-free steps all spring in an effort to ensure he's fully ready for his first taste of Cactus League action. Given Walker got through his latest test without issues, the veteran is now likely to make his spring debut against the Brewers on Monday, with official confirmation likely to come within the coming days.
Mar 5, 2020
Perfect in intersquad start
Walker retired all seven batters he faced in an intersquad "B" game Wednesday, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The outing was yet another step in the slow walking of Walker's development this spring, as the Mariners have opted to be cautious with the veteran right-hander after he missed most of the last two seasons with injuries. Walker threw 31 pitches overall in Wednesday's outing, which likely served as his final tune-up before making his first Cactus League start early next week. "Finally, I feel like I can be aggressive now," Walker said. "When I step out there I feel good and can let it loose. I don't have any worries, nothing in the back of my head about my shoulder or elbow or anything like that. It makes it a lot easier to pitch and a lot more fun."
Mar 2, 2020
Will pitch in intersquad game
Walker will pitch in an intersquad game Wednesday rather than pitching against the Angels in the Cactus League, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker was expected to make his Cactus League debut this week, but the Mariners will instead opt to use him in their intersquad game Wednesday. The right-hander has thrown several times already during spring training, and it appears as though he could win a spot in the major-league rotation to begin the regular season.
Feb 28, 2020
First spring start next week
Walker will make his Cactus League debut sometime next week, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He threw well in Friday's two-inning simulated game but was not quite as sharp as he was in his previous outing, according to manager Scott Servais. The skipper said Walker needs to get into game action, and that he will get his chance sometime in the middle of next week. Walker is on track to make Seattle's rotation.
Feb 25, 2020
Schedule slightly altered
Walker, who was slated to make his first Cactus League start Thursday against the Giants, will instead pitch in a simulated game Friday, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. "We'll bump him back," manager Scott Servais said. "We'll probably do one more live up-down before we slide him into the regular 'A' game rotation. I thought he threw well on the backfields today. He felt good coming out of it, so he'll continue building on that."
ANALYSIS
The right-hander is being treated with an abundance of caution after shoulder and elbow injuries wiped out most of his last two seasons. Johns adds that Walker could potentially pitch in a "B" game on Friday as well. Walker got throw two innings of live batting practice Monday without issues.
Feb 23, 2020
Solid in first live BP
Walker was solid in his first live batting practice session of spring Friday, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. "I thought he looked pretty good," manager Scott Servais said. "Taijuan has changed a few things mechanically. He's cleaned up his arm stroke, so he's made some adjustments there."
ANALYSIS
This spring is a particularly relevant one for the 27-year-old right-hander, who is trying to come back from two injury-marred seasons. Walker did take a hard comebacker off his leg during the session, but he worked through it and threw his full allotment of pitches. Walker is considered to have a good opportunity at a back-end rotation spot as long as he's able to prove his fitness this spring.
Feb 16, 2020
Solid in first bullpen
Walker looked strong in his first bullpen session of camp Saturday, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander just returned to the organization where he got his start, and he's considered a legitimate candidate for the No. 5 starter job. While a bullpen session against air is the most preliminary of tests for a pitcher coming back from a pair of injury-marred seasons like Walker is, it's certainly lends some reason for optimism as camp begins. Walker was limited to 14 innings across four appearances over the last two campaigns with the Diamondbacks.
Feb 12, 2020
Returns to Seattle
Walker returned to the Mariners on a one-year, $2 million deal Wednesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker spent the first seven years of his professional career in the Mariners' organization before being traded to Arizona following the 2016 season. He's thrown just 14 big-league innings over the last two seasons due to Tommy John surgery, but he's found himself a soft landing spot where starts should be easy to come by. Don't expect the 27-year-old to handle a particularly heavy workload in his first full season back on the mound, but his respectable 3.95 career ERA is good enough to make him a fine budget fantasy option.
Sep 27, 2019
Will open Sunday
Walker (shoulder) will open Sunday's game against the Padres and is set to throw one inning, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker is set to make his 2019 season debut on the final day of the regular season, as he's finally been cleared to return after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April of 2018. A right shoulder capsule sprain slowed his recovery.
Sep 26, 2019
Could open Sunday
Walker (elbow, shoulder) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Thursday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
If all goes well Thursday, the plan appears to be for Walker to open the season finale Sunday against the Padres with left-hander Alex Young coming in as the primary starter. Walker was expected to return mid-season from Tommy John elbow surgery, but a right shoulder capsule sprain in mid-May delayed his eventual return. He's now hoping to throw an inning for two in a major-league game before the end of the season.
Sep 25, 2019
Hoping to return over weekend
Walker (elbow/shoulder) is hoping to pitch during Pittsburgh's upcoming series against the Padres, which begins Friday, Jack Magruder of the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker has been sidelined all season while working his way back from elbow and shoulder injuries. With the Diamondbacks eliminated from playoff contention, it sounds like the team will try and get Walker into a game before the end of the season, assuming everything goes off without a hitch during his scheduled bullpen session Thursday.
Sep 24, 2019
Throws sim game
Walker (elbow, shoulder) threw a 20-pitch simulated game Monday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker will be evaluated Tuesday to determine how he responds to the session, which could serves as the final step before a potential return from the injured list. The right-hander has participated in a series of bullpen sessions during September in hopes of throwing at least one inning in a major league game this season. With the Diamondbacks being eliminated from the postseason contention in a loss to the Cardinals on Monday, the club may be more inclined to activate Walker and let him pitch this week.
Sep 15, 2019
Another bullpen scheduled
Walker (elbow, shoulder) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Richard Morin of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker is working hard to put himself in position to throw in a real game. Tuesday's session will be the third bullpen in the last week. The Diamondbacks have just 14 games remaining, and manager Torey Lovullo is uncertain if he'll be ready before the end of the season.
Sep 11, 2019
Throws bullpen session
Walker (elbow, shoulder) threw a 14-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
This marked Walker's first bullpen session in four months, and it went well. He threw only fastballs and said he felt normal doing so, giving him hope that he can throw an inning in the regular season. "If I can get in there and just, kind of, for myself, mentally, and know, hey, I can still go out there and compete, know that everything is working good," he said. "And I can go into the offseason feeling good about the last two years of the work I've been putting in to get back." Manager Torey Lovullo said Monday the "window might be closing" for Walker to return during the regular season, so the right-hander may have to settle on a different setting for that inning of work.
Sep 10, 2019
Bullpen session on tap
Walker (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker played catch on the field in New York on Monday, and after throwing without any issue, he's been given the green light to toss a bullpen session. While it's good news that he's progressing through his throwing program, the Diamondbacks are unsure if he'll be ready to take the mound before the end of the 2019 campaign. Walker hasn't seen any big-league action since undergoing Tommy John surgery in April of 2018.
Sep 9, 2019
Meeting physican in NY
Walker (elbow, shoulder) will meet the team in New York and visit with a physician, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Diamondbacks kick off a four-game set against the Mets on Monday, but Walker is there only for a meeting with Dr. David Altchek, who performed his Tommy John elbow surgery in 2018. Manager Torey Lovullo was not sure if Walker is there for his elbow or the shoulder injury, which Walker sustained in the final stages of his recovery from elbow surgery. He had been scheduled to throw off a mound Friday, but that was scaled back to a flat ground session due to fatigue in the shoulder.
Sep 7, 2019
Bullpen scrapped
Walker (elbow, shoulder) threw off flat ground Friday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker was expected to toss a bullpen session Friday, but the organization opted instead for another flat ground session. Manager Torey Lovullo said he did not know why there was change of plans.
Sep 6, 2019
Ready for bullpen
Walker (elbow, shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Friday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
This will be the first time he throws off a mound since suffering a shoulder capsule injury in May. That injury came during the last stages of his recovery from Tommy John elbow surgery. The 27-year-old starter is hoping to return from the injured list this season and log an inning of relief.
Aug 26, 2019
Increases throwing distance
Walker (elbow, shoulder) has extended his throwing program out to 120 feet, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
This is seen as the final step before pitch off flat ground or a mound in the bullpen. Walker is presumed to be over the Tommy John elbow surgery he underwent in April 2018, but a setback to his shoulder in May is delaying his return to the active roster.
Aug 22, 2019
No firm plans other than throwing
Walker (elbow, shoulder) threw out to 105 feet Wednesday, but there are no firm plans for him to throw a bullpen session, Richard Morin of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Walker is recovering from Tommy John elbow surgery he underwent in April 2018. As he was ramping up activity this past spring, the right-hander developed shoulder soreness and hasn't thrown off a mound since May. Time is running out in 2019 for him to help the Diamondbacks' rotation.
