Goes deep in loss
Freeman went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
Freeman homered twice over his last four games of the season, giving him four long balls on the year. The infielder also posted a .242/.295/.366 slash line over 168 plate appearances. He added 18 RBI, 20 runs scored and five stolen bases, and he should have a chance to compete for a larger role in spring training next year.
Sep 30, 2023
Knocks third homer
Freeman went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run in Friday's 7-5 win over the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
The multi-hit effort was Freeman's first since July 9, though is playing time has been limited. The 24-year-old infielder has gone 9-for-40 (.225) over 17 games in September while swatting two of his three homers for the season. He's batting .242 with a .645 OPS, five stolen bases, 17 RBI and 19 runs scored through 62 contests overall.
Sep 28, 2023
Productive in win
Freeman went 1-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Freeman got the Guardians on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the second to score Ramon Laureano and later came around to score the team's second run after stealing second. It was only the third baseman's seventh hit this month, where he's now batting .200 with six RBI, four runs scored and two stolen bases.
Sep 5, 2023
Homers in blowout loss
Freeman went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Monday's 20-6 loss to the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Freeman has homered twice over his last four games, though that's in a stretch dating back to Aug. 26. The young infielder isn't seeing steady playing time as the Guardians instead lean on veterans while trying to compete for the AL Central lead. Freeman has added nine RBI, 15 runs scored and three stolen bases while slashing .238/.306/.354 over 126 plate appearances this season.
Aug 27, 2023
Pops first career homer
Freeman went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 8-3 loss to the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Getting the start at third base and batting seventh, Freeman hooked a slow curve from Hyun Jin Ryu over the wall in left field in the fifth inning for his first career homer in the majors. The 24-year-old seems to be settling into a short-side platoon role all over the infield, but since returning from the IL in mid-August he's gone just 2-for-20 with six strikeouts.
Aug 16, 2023
Activated from injured list
Freeman (shoulder) was activated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Freeman missed the last two weeks of action with a shoulder issue. Brayan Rocchio and Gabriel Arias have been seeing action at shortstop for the Guardians since the Amed Rosario trade, but Freeman could be worked into the mix.
Aug 11, 2023
Beginning rehab assignment
Freeman (shoulder) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Columbus on Friday, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeman has been out of action for just over a week with shoulder soreness that first popped up Aug. 1 versus the Astros. The fact that he's already set for a rehab assignment is a positive sign that he could be activated when first eligible. What's less clear is where Freeman might fit in the Guardians' infield once he returns, as Brayan Rocchio and Gabriel Arias have both enjoyed some success with more playing time in recent weeks.
Aug 4, 2023
Placed on 10-day IL
Cleveland placed Freeman on the 10-day injured list Friday, retroactive to August 2, with right shoulder soreness, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
There's no exact diagnosis yet, but Freeman will be sidelined until at least next weekend. Jose Tena is joining the Guardians on Friday and they have also acquired Kole Calhoun in a minor-league trade with the Dodgers.
Aug 4, 2023
Tending to sore shoulder
Freeman wasn't available for Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Astros due to a sore right shoulder, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeman picked up the injury in Tuesday's 2-0 loss, when his shoulder acted up as he grounded out in the fourth inning. He stayed in the game for the bottom of the fourth before being replaced by Andres Gimenez in the field in the next inning. Follow-up exams on Freeman reportedly were encouraging, so he could be ready to play at some point during this weekend's series with the White Sox. The Guardians have an opening at shortstop after trading away Amed Rosario last week, but the team has thus far favored Gabriel Arias over Freeman as the primary option at the position.
Jul 10, 2023
On base three times Sunday
Freeman went 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Sunday's loss to the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Freeman notched multiple hits and a steal for his second straight start; however, his playing time remains sparse and his only path to a more consistent role seems to be if someone ahead of him gets injured. The 24-year-old has done well when given an opportunity and is now slashing .308/.352/.400 with six extra-base hits, four RBI, 11 runs, three steals and a 4:11 BB:K in 72 plate appearances.
Jul 4, 2023
Steals base, scores twice in win
Freeman went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored in Tuesday's 6-5 extra-inning win over Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Freeman has hit safely in just four of his last 11 games, with each of those instances being multi-hit efforts. He's stuck behind Jose Ramirez, Amed Rosario and Andres Gimenez for playing time in Cleveland's infield, but Freeman has made the most of his recent chances. For the season, he's batting .290 with a .715 OPS, four RBI, two steals, 10 runs scored, six doubles and no home runs over 68 plate appearances.
Jun 30, 2023
Batting leadoff
Freeman is starting at third base and batting leadoff Friday versus the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Jose Ramirez is getting a designated hitter day and Steven Kwan is receiving a day off, which provides Freeman with a rare start. It's the first time the 24-year-old has batted leadoff at the major-league level.
Jun 4, 2023
Solid off bench Saturday
Freeman went 1-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base in Saturday's 4-2 win over the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Freeman entered the game after Amed Rosario exited with left knee soreness. Playing time has been sparse for Freeman since his May 6 recall -- this was just the ninth game he's appeared in since that date. He's batting .286 with two doubles, two walks and three runs scored through 30 plate appearances on the year. If Rosario is forced to miss time, some combination of Freeman, Gabriel Arias and Brayan Rocchio would likely compete to fill the void at shortstop.
May 6, 2023
Back in big leagues
Freeman was recalled by the Guardians on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Freeman spent a few days in the big leagues in April, going 2-for-7 with a double and a walk. Combined with his slightly longer cameo last season, he's now hitting .250/.319/.298 with 94 MLB plate appearances. His Triple-A numbers suggest promise, as he's hit .329/.468/.482 with 100 steals in 22 games this season, but he doesn't seem to have a path to anything more than a utility role. Oscar Gonzalez was optioned in a corresponding move.
Apr 23, 2023
Optioned to Triple-A
Cleveland optioned Freeman to Triple-A Columbus on Sunday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The move opens up a spot on the 26-man roster for Logan Allen with Allen starting Sunday's game against the Marlins. The right-handed hitting infielder went 2-for-7 in a brief cup of coffee with the Guardians and will return to regular playing time in the International League.
Apr 22, 2023
Returns to lineup Saturday
Freeman (shoulder) is hitting eighth and playing third base against the Marlins on Saturday for the second game of a doubleheader.
ANALYSIS
Freeman has missed the past few games with a shoulder injury, but he'll return for the second game of a twin billing. Jose Ramirez will be the designated hitter for the contest with Gabriel Arias handling the shortstop duties and Amed Rosario out of the lineup.
Apr 19, 2023
Hurts shoulder Tuesday
Freeman didn't appear in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Tigers due to an apparent left shoulder injury, Joe Noga of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Though neither Freeman nor Amed Rosario (back) have been placed on the injured list, their poor health explains why the Guardians felt compelled to call up top middle-infield prospect Brayan Rocchio from Triple-A Columbus ahead of Wednesday's game. After being recalled ahead of Tuesday's doubleheader to help replace an ailing Rosario at shortstop, Freeman went 2-for-4 at the dish in the Guardians' 4-3 loss in Game 1 but appeared to hurt his shoulder while defending a stolen-base attempt in the fourth inning. After a team off day Thursday, the Guardians will presumably reassess both Rosario and Freeman before determining whether either infielder requires a stint on the IL.
Apr 18, 2023
Recalled from Triple-A
Freeman was recalled from Triple-A Columbus by the Guardians on Tuesday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeman is off to a blazing start at Columbus with a 1.100 OPS, two home runs and five stolen bases. The infielder might only be around for a few days while Enyel De Los Santos is on paternity leave.
Mar 21, 2023
Optioned to Triple-A
Freeman was optioned to Triple-A Columbus by the Guardians on Tuesday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeman hasn't hit much this spring, going just 5-for-34 at the plate. It appears that the Guardians will carry Gabriel Arias and/or Richie Palacios as utility options on the Opening Day roster.
Feb 20, 2023
Will get outfield look
Freeman will play some outfield during spring training to gain positional versatility, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
When the Guardians are fully healthy, there doesn't appear to be an everyday spot available for Freeman. The 23-year-old will look to add more positions to his ledger, making him an option when injuries occur, though he still needs to hit well enough to grab a bench spot out of camp.
Oct 1, 2022
Sent down Saturday
Freeman was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Freeman had lost out on playing time recently, as he was in the lineup for just two of the last 10 games. The 23-year-old will be cast off the active roster as part of a move after Bo Naylor's contract was selected Saturday.
Sep 21, 2022
Sits against righty again
Freeman is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
After starting in the final three games of the Guardians' series with the Twins that ended Monday, Freeman finds himself on the bench for the second game in a row. Both of his absences from the lineup have come against right-handed pitchers (Dylan Cease and Lance Lynn), and the righty-hitting Freeman may find himself in a de facto platoon moving forward with lefty-hitting outfielder Will Brennan, who was called up from Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday and is starting in right field.
Sep 20, 2022
Takes seat Tuesday
Freeman isn't in the lineup for Tuesday's matchup against the White Sox, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeman will get a day off after his 1-for-5 effort Monday against the Twins. Jose Ramirez will start at third base, moving Josh Naylor over to designated hitter and Owen Miller into the starting first baseman role, batting seventh.
Sep 19, 2022
Picking up playing time
Freeman will start at third base and bat seventh in Monday's game against the Twins, Joe Noga of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
He'll pick up his third consecutive start in a row, all of which have come against right-handed pitchers. Through his first 72 big-league plate appearances, Freeman is slashing .254/.333/.302, but the Guardians may view that modest level of production as an upgrade over what the slumping Owen Miller is currently providing. Miller, who is on the bench for the fourth time in six games, owns a .579 OPS in the second half.
Sep 10, 2022
Still not starting
Freeman isn't in the lineup Saturday against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Freeman has recorded hits in each of his last six games but will head to the bench for a third consecutive matchup. Amed Rosario is starting at shortstop and batting second.
Sep 9, 2022
Sits out Friday
Freeman is not in the lineup Friday against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old infielder made four consecutive starts between Saturday and Tuesday in which he went 5-for-17 with an RBI. Freeman will now sit for the second straight game. Amed Rosario will fill in at shortstop Friday and Richie Palacios will assume the designated hitter role, batting seventh.
Sep 7, 2022
Sits after four straight starts
Freeman is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Royals, Joe Noga of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
After going 5-for-17 with two runs and an RBI while starting in each of the past four games, Freeman will take a seat for the series finale. Though Owen Miller will check into the lineup in the rookie's stead Wednesday, Freeman still appears to have the edge on the final spot in Cleveland's regular starting nine.
Aug 15, 2022
Registers first steal
Freeman went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 7-2 win over the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Freeman has seen inconsistent playing time since his promotion Aug. 3, appearing in just six games. He's batting .250 with a stolen base and two runs scored through 20 plate appearances, and he's yet to see a hit go for extra bases. With Andres Gimenez, Amed Rosario and Jose Ramirez around, Freeman has no clear path to playing time in the infield, so an uptick in usage shouldn't be expected.
Aug 7, 2022
On bench again
Freeman is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Following his promotion from Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday, Freeman went 2-for-8 with two walks and a run while drawing three straight starts at three different positions in the infield. Despite the respectable start to his big-league career, Freeman will be on the bench Sunday for the second contest in a row and looks like he'll have to settle for a utility role while he's up with the big club.
Aug 3, 2022
Promotion official
The Guardians recalled Freeman from Triple-A Columbus ahead of Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks. He'll start at third base and bat seventh in his MLB debut.
ANALYSIS
Cleveland optioned Ernie Clement to Columbus in a corresponding move, and Freeman is expected to take over Clement's role as the Guardians' top utility infielder. In Wednesday's series finale, Jose Ramirez is getting a day out of the field and handling the designated-hitter role, and he could find himself in a non-defensive role more frequently in the wake of Franmil Reyes being optioned to Triple-A on Tuesday. If that ends up being the case, Freeman could have a path to play regularly at the hot corner, but the 23-year-old will have to perform well to ensure he sticks in the everyday lineup. Over 343 plate appearances at Triple-A this season, Freeman turned in a .279/.371/.364 slash line with six home runs and six stolen bases.
Aug 3, 2022
Headed to majors
The Guardians plan to call up Freeman from Triple-A Columbus prior to Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Cleveland isn't be known to be dealing with any injuries to its infielders, so Freeman's promotion may just be a matter of the organization rewarding him for his hot hitting at Columbus of late. Though he owns a .735 OPS for the season at Triple-A, Freeman recorded hits in all but one of his last 15 starts while slashing .400/.478/.500 with two home runs, three stolen bases and a 6:5 BB:K over that stretch. Freeman, who has picked up starts at second base, third base and shortstop at Triple-A this season, could unseat Ernie Clement as Cleveland's top utility infielder.
Jun 14, 2022
Ugly results in Triple-A
Freeman is hitting just .220/.333/.319 with three homers, two steals and a 10:18 BB:K through 35 games for Triple-A Columbus.
ANALYSIS
While no one expected Freeman to muscle up and start hitting homers in bunches, he's been utterly punchless this season. It's been particularly bad over his last 16 games, in which Freeman has managed a brutal .175/.307/.270 line with a couple home runs and no other extra-base hits. Generally considered something of a doubles machine, the 23-year-old hasn't hit a two-bagger since way back on May 19. The only positives to take away from this season so far are that Freeman has kept his strikeout rate low and that his BABIP is an unlucky .233. If he can get back to what made him successful in the lower levels of the minors, Freeman could grow into a contact-heavy starter at second base, but this season has mostly been a step backward so far.
Apr 27, 2022
Set to join Triple-A club
Freeman (shoulder) will report to Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday and is expected to be activated from the 7-day injured list in advance of the affiliate's game against Louisville, Emily Waldon of Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeman looks ready to make his Triple-A debut and his first minor-league appearance since July 25 of last season after a nine-month recovery from a left shoulder injury that ultimately required surgery. The Guardians could initially look to manage Freeman's workload coming off the injury by deploying him as a designated hitter, but he's expected to eventually settle into an everyday role at shortstop, third base or second base. If Freeman is able to rediscover his pre-injury form and pick up where he left off at Akron -- he posted an .842 OPS in 180 plate appearances in 2021 -- he could be in store for his first big-league call-up at some point in the second half of the season.
Apr 24, 2022
Resumes full workouts
Freeman (shoulder) has begun participating in full team workouts at extending spring training in Arizona, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeman remains on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Columbus while he continues to ramp up from the shoulder surgery he required last summer. He's likely at least a couple weeks away from debuting with the Triple-A club.
Apr 12, 2022
Opens season on IL
Triple-A Columbus placed Freeman (shoulder) on its 7-day injured list April 5.
ANALYSIS
The 22-year-old is apparently still in need of further time to complete his rehab program for the surgery he required last August to address a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Prior to his 2021 season being cut short by the shoulder injury, Freeman slashed .323/.372/.470 across 180 plate appearances at Double-A Akron.
Mar 19, 2022
Will begin hitting soon
Freeman (shoulder) is set to resume hitting within the next week, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Freeman is recovering from surgery to fix a torn labrum in his left shoulder. He has not been cleared to play games yet, but it seems he shouldn't miss too much of the minor-league season. He's expected to see most of his time at Triple-A Columbus this year after hitting .323/.372/.470 across 180 plate appearances with Double-A Akron in 2021.
Nov 19, 2021
Added to 40-man roster
Freeman (shoulder) was added to Cleveland's 40-man roster Friday.
ANALYSIS
This move was a given, even though Freeman's 2021 season didn't go as planned. He performed up to his usual standards (.323/.372/.470), but was limited to 41 games at Double-A when a shoulder injury ended his season. He is recovering from left labrum surgery and should spend the bulk of the 2022 season at Triple-A.
Aug 10, 2021
Undergoes shoulder surgery
Freeman underwent season-ending surgery on his left shoulder Monday.
ANALYSIS
More specifically, the procedure addressed the labrum of Freeman's left shoulder, which had been a concern for the 22-year-old since late June. He was on Double-A Akron's 7-day injured list for approximately three weeks before returning to action July 218, but he appeared in only five games before being shut down again. Freeman is expected to make a full recovery from surgery and could be available for the start of the 2022 minor-league season.
Aug 7, 2021
Done for season
Freeman is done for the season due to "labrum concerns", Emily Waldon of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
He was out from June 24 through July 17 with a shoulder injury, then returned for a week and was placed back on the injured list with Double-A Akron. This report doesn't make it seem like the Arizona Fall League will be an option for Freeman, so the hope is that he can get healthy in time for spring training. Freeman, 22, has one of the best hit tools in the minors, slashing .323/.372/.470 with an 11.7 percent strikeout rate in 41 games during his first exposure to Double-A pitching.
Jul 31, 2021
Back on injured list
Freeman was placed on the 7-day minor-league injured list with a left shoulder strain Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Freeman missed nearly a month with the same injury in late June and early July, and he went 5-for-17 with three doubles, three runs and a walk in five games at Double-A Akron since returning from the injured list. However, it's not yet clear how much time he'll miss after the issue apparently flared up recently.
Jul 18, 2021
Returns from IL
Double-A Akron reinstated Freeman (shoulder) from the 7-day injured list Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Freeman had been inactive since June 23 due to a strained left shoulder. One of the top position prospects in the Cleveland farm system, Freeman was slashing .327/.377/.469 across 162 plate appearances prior to landing on the IL.
Jul 3, 2021
Placed on injured list
Freeman was placed on the 7-day minor-league injured list with a left shoulder strain Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Freeman hasn't played since June 23, and he's expected to miss a week or two while he waits for some inflammation in his shoulder to subside. As a result, it's not very surprising to see him land on the injured list so he has time to recover. The 22-year-old performed well prior to his injury and slashed .327/.377/.469 with two homers, 23 runs, 19 RBI and four stolen bases across 36 games at Double-A Akron.
Jul 1, 2021
Battling shoulder inflammation
Freeman will miss a week or two at Double-A Akron with shoulder inflammation, Emily Waldon of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 22-year-old hasn't seen the field for the RubberDucks since June 23, but he's not dealing with any structural damage and shouldn't face a significant absence. Freeman is Cleveland's top prospect and has been hitting well at Double-A through 36 games with a .327/.377/.469 slash line, two homers, 19 RBI, 23 runs and four stolen bases.
Feb 3, 2021
Receives invite to big-league camp
Freeman received an invitation to the Indians' major-league camp Wednesday, Emily Waldon of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 21-year-old spent 2020 at Cleveland's alternate training site and showed off some of his power with eight home runs, and he'll now receive another chance to showcase himself for the organization. Freeman topped out at High-A in 2019 and had a .751 OPS in 62 games, and he could be ticketed for the upper minors in 2021.
Sep 9, 2020
Tapping into power
Freeman has hit eight home runs thus far at Cleveland's alternate training site.
ANALYSIS
There are no official stats for prospects playing at alternate training sites, but there have been various videos on Twitter of Freeman hitting homers at the alternate site, and a member of his family posted on Sept. 7 that Freeman has hit three home runs in three days and is now up to eight on the summer. Freeman's doubters have pointed to his lack of over-the-fence power in the lower levels of the minors, but he has an excellent hit tool and it looks like some of his doubles are starting to clear the fence. His stock is trending up and he could reach the big leagues sometime next season if he stays on this trajectory.
