Spencer's minutes and shot volume have ticked up a bit while Ja Morant (calf) has been on the shelf, but the second-round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft's hot shooting might allow him to hang onto an elevated role even after Morant is back.

Spencer ended up leading the Grizzlies in scoring despite coming off the bench and playing only 19 minutes, as he drained five triples in his time on the court. While Spencer hasn't been the most consistent offensively, he is averaging 9.1 points, 3.2 assists, 2.2 rebounds, 0.7 steals and 2.3 threes on the season, and is worth monitoring in deeper leagues moving forward.

Spencer won't start in Monday's game against the Pistons, Drew Hill of The Daily Memphian reports.

With Ja Morant (suspension) back in action Monday, Spencer will return to the bench. Over seven regular-season appearances (one start), the second-year guard has averaged 7.1 points, 3.4 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 0.9 steals while shooting 41.4 percent from beyond the arc in 17.3 minutes per contest.

Spencer will start in Sunday's game against the Raptors.

While Spencer is in competition with Javon Small for minutes, it is worth noting Small is on a two-way contract, meaning it is likely Spencer begins the regular season as the third-string point guard behind Morant and Jerome.

Spencer finished with 16 points (6-17 FG, 4-12 3Pt, 0-1 FT), four rebounds, two assists and one steal across 28 minutes during Thursday's 92-88 loss to the Hawks.

As Memphis start to get healthy bodies back on the floor, Spencer will likely scale back his playing time, to the point where he may or may not be in the rotation.

Barring a miracle, Spencer is unlikely to feature as an every-night part of the rotation moving forward.

Spencer also showed upside on the glass Monday night by snagging three rebounds despite there being a shortage behind Zach Edey's 15-rebound performance.

Spencer was drafted with the No. 53 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft and has since put pen to paper on a two-way deal. This contract will allow him to continue his development and see regular playing time in the G League while also making him available to contribute at the NBA level as needed.

If Spencer is able to carve out a career at the NBA level, it will likely be on the back of his elite shooting ability, as he converted 44 percent of his 5.6 three-point attempts per contest at UConn.
