Gary Payton Injury News & Updates
Keep up with the latest injuries from the Warriors vs Suns game on Thursday with our National Basketball Association injury report.Dec 7, 2025
Tallies three swipes in win
Payton provided six points (3-9 FG, 0-4 3Pt), three rebounds, three steals and one assist across 27 minutes during Saturday's 99-94 victory over Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
After logging just three minutes in Thursday's loss to Philadelphia, Payton saw increased playing time with multiple key contributors sidelined. While he struggled on find his rhythm on the offensive end, the 33-year-old recorded a game- and season-high three steals. The veteran swingman has seen 20-plus minutes in three of the team's last four games, averaging 9.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 20.5 minutes per contest during that span.
Nov 30, 2025
Shines off bench in win
Payton provided 19 points (9-14 FG, 1-2 3Pt), 11 rebounds and three assists over 25 minutes during Saturday's 104-96 win over the Pelicans.
ANALYSIS
Payton made the most of his minutes off the bench to record a double-double while also ending as the Warriors' second-best scorer. He's not expected to produce at this rate on a steady basis, though, so there's a big chance this was just an outlier for Payton. This was the first time he recorded double-digit points and/or rebounds in a game this season, and it was also just the second time he logged more than 20 minutes in a single contest.
Nov 29, 2025
Available Saturday
Payton (ankle) is available for Saturday's game against the Pelicans.
ANALYSIS
Payton sprained his ankle in Wednesday's loss to the Rockets, though he'll return to action Saturday. Over his last five appearances (one start), the veteran swingman has averaged 5.2 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 14.4 minutes per contest. However, he could see a dip in minutes with Jonathan Kuminga (knee) back in action.
Nov 28, 2025
Probable to play Saturday
Payton (ankle) is probable for Saturday's game against the Pelicans.
ANALYSIS
Payton exited Wednesday's game against the Rockets due to a sprained left ankle, but the probable tag suggests the guard should be able to suit up Saturday. Payton doesn't carry a lot of fantasy upside outside of the deep leagues, though, averaging 3.1 points and 2.8 boards across 11.1 minutes per game in 19 contests (one start) this season.
Nov 27, 2025
Won't return Wednesday
Payton will not return to Wednesday's game against the Rockets due to a sprained left ankle, Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton only lasted five minutes before rolling his ankle, so he'll end his evening with one rebound, one assist and one turnover. For now, Payton should be considered questionable for Saturday's game against the Pelicans.
Nov 26, 2025
Headed to bench
Payton will come off the bench for Wednesday's game against the Rockets, Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton received a spot-start for Monday's game against the Jazz in a matchup-based decision, but he'll return to his usual role with the reserves Wednesday evening. Payton is averaging 3.3 points and 1.6 assists per game this season.
Nov 24, 2025
Starting Monday
Payton will start Monday's game against the Jazz, Anthony Slater of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran swingman will get the starting nod for the first time this season, pushing Will Richard to the bench. Over his last five outings, Payton has averaged 4.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 14.8 minutes per contest.
Nov 13, 2025
Grabs six boards in win
Payton logged four points (2-4 FG, 0-1 3Pt), six rebounds, two assists and one steal over 15 minutes during Wednesday's 125-120 win over the Spurs.
ANALYSIS
Payton has yet to play for more than 15 minutes in a game this season, but has done well rebounding the ball, recording his third game with at least six boards. Since he is buried in the depth chart behind Buddy Hield, Brandin Podziemski and Will Richard, Payton is not likely to receive consistent playing time.
Nov 6, 2025
Another underwhelming performance
Payton closed Wednesday's 121-116 loss to Sacramento with three points (1-1 FG, 1-1 3Pt), two rebounds, three assists and one steal in 11 minutes.
ANALYSIS
Payton's disappointing season continued Wednesday, playing double-digit minutes for just the fourth time. To this point, he has scored a total of 19 points in eight appearances, well below what fantasy managers might want.
Oct 18, 2025
Adds eight points in loss
Payton dropped eight points (3-6 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 2-4 FT), three rebounds, two steals and an assist over 16 minutes in Friday's 106-103 preseason loss to the Clippers.
ANALYSIS
Payton was brought back to Golden State after having an impactful 2024-25 regular season, averaging 6.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.3 blocks over 14.9 minutes in 62 games. However, it appears he will have to fight for minutes behind the likes of Buddy Hield, Brandin Podziemski and Jonathan Kuminga.
Sep 28, 2025
Returning to Golden State
Payton agreed to a deal to return to the Warriors on Sunday, Shams Charania of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton will return to Golden State after a season in which he averaged 6.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in 15.0 minutes per game across 62 appearances, including 11 starts. Payton figures to remain an important rotational piece, offering strong perimeter defense.
Apr 11, 2025
Green light to play Friday
Payton (knee) is available for Friday's game against Portland.
ANALYSIS
Payton missed the Warriors' last two games due to right knee inflammation, but he's been cleared to return Friday. He has averaged 10.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.3 steals over 19.4 minutes per game since the beginning of March.
Apr 10, 2025
Questionable for Friday
Payton (knee) has been listed as questionable for Friday's game against the Trail Blazers.
ANALYSIS
Payton is in danger of missing a third straight game due to a right knee issue. The Warriors will likely lean on Buddy Hield, Moses Moody and Gui Santos in the backcourt if Payton is ultimately ruled out.
Apr 9, 2025
Ruled out Wednesday
Payton (knee) has been ruled out for Wednesday's game against the Spurs.
ANALYSIS
Payton will miss a second straight game for the Warriors as he continues to nurse a knee issue. Golden State will likely lean on Gui Santos, Buddy Hield and Moses Moody due to the absence of the defensive-minded guard.
Apr 9, 2025
Questionable vs. San Antonio
Payton (knee) has been listed as questionable for Wednesday's game against the Spurs.
ANALYSIS
Payton is in danger of missing a second straight game for the Warriors on Wednesday due to a right knee issue. If the veteran guard cannot play against San Antonio, Golden State will likely turn to Gui Santos, Buddy Hield and Moses Moody to help shoulder the load in the backcourt.
Apr 8, 2025
Downgraded to out
Payton (knee) won't play in Tuesday's game versus the Suns.
ANALYSIS
Payton has been downgraded from questionable to out Tuesday due to right knee inflammation. Payton's next chance to suit up is Wednesday's matchup with San Antonio.
Apr 8, 2025
Iffy for Tuesday
Payton is questionable for Tuesday's game against the Suns due to right knee discomfort.
ANALYSIS
Tuesday's game is the front end of a back-to-back set, so a maintenance day could be on the table for Payton. If the veteran guard is unable to give it a go, Gui Santos, Buddy Hield and Moses Moody could potentially pick up a handful of minutes.
Apr 7, 2025
Another solid showing off bench
Gary Payton logged 16 points (7-14 FG, 2-5 3Pt), five rebounds, three steals and two rebounds in 20 minutes during Sunday's 106-96 loss to the Rockets.
ANALYSIS
The veteran guard had - as always - active hands on the defensive end. He didn't just contribute defensively though, as Payton also poured in 16 points and grabbed three offensive boards to go with his pair of defensive rebounds. Fantasy managers shouldn't get too used to seeing any consistent scoring output from Payton going forward though, as the outing marked his third-highest points total of the season.
Apr 5, 2025
Gets light minutes in return
Payton (thumb) recorded zero points (0-1 FG, 0-1 3Pt) and one assist in two minutes of playing time in Friday's 118-104 win over the Nuggets.
ANALYSIS
In his return from a four-game absence Friday due to the partial tear of a ligament in his left thumb, Payton was a fringe part of the rotation. He played three brief shifts on the night, as he logged just under two minutes in the first quarter and then played for a handful of seconds at the end of the second and third quarters. Payton should see his role increase slightly in future contests, but the defensive-minded wing likely won't see enough minutes to warrant much fantasy intrigue over the rest of the season.
Apr 4, 2025
Will face Denver on Friday
Payton (thumb) is available for Friday's game against the Nuggets, Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton will return from a four-game absence Friday due to the partial tear of a ligament in his left thumb. The veteran swingman has averaged 9.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 1.2 assists across 21.0 minutes per contest in his last five appearances.
Apr 4, 2025
Questionable Friday
Payton (thumb) is questionable for Friday's game against Denver, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton is in jeopardy of missing his fifth straight game due to the partial tear of a ligament in his left thumb. However, the Warriors announced Thursday that the veteran swingman is making progress in his recovery and can be considered day-to-day. If Payton remains on the shelf, Gui Santos will likely continue to see an uptick in playing time.
Apr 3, 2025
Progressing in recovery
The Warriors announced Thursday that Payton (thumb) is making good progress in his recovery, and although he won't play in Thursday's game versus the Lakers, he will be considered day-to-day moving forward.
ANALYSIS
Payton suffered a partial tear of a ligament in his left thumb against Miami on March 25 and has missed Golden State's previous three contests. Although Payton will remain sidelined Thursday, it appears that he will attempt to return to action before the end of the regular season.
Mar 27, 2025
Suffers torn ligament in thumb
Payton suffered a torn ligament in his left thumb and "will miss time", ESPN's Shams Charania reports.
ANALYSIS
This is a tough blow for Golden State, as Payton had been logging sizable workloads recently with minutes in the 20s. With Payton out for an indefinite period, there could be more minutes available for players such as Buddy Hield, Moses Moody and Gui Santos.
Mar 25, 2025
Starting vs. Miami
Payton will start in Tuesday's game against the Heat, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran swingman will join the starting lineup for the first start since Jan. 31, pushing Quinten Post to the second unit. Payton is averaging 12.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.2 steals across 21.0 minutes per contest in 10 outings this month.
Mar 22, 2025
Will play vs. Atlanta
Payton (knee) has been cleared to play in Saturday's game against the Hawks.
ANALYSIS
Payton will be back on the floor for the Warriors on Saturday after missing Thursday's win against the Raptors due to a knee issue. The veteran guard is averaging 6.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game this season, shooting 57.8 percent from the field.
Mar 21, 2025
Questionable for Saturday
Payton (knee) has been listed as questionable for Saturday's game against the Hawks.
ANALYSIS
Payton missed Thursday's win against the Raptors to nurse soreness in his left knee. If he gets ruled out for Saturday's game in Atlanta, the Warriors will likely turn to Buddy Hield and Gui Santos to shoulder the load.
Mar 20, 2025
Won't go Thursday
Payton (knee) has been ruled out for Thursday's game against the Raptors.
ANALYSIS
Payton was added to the injury report with left knee soreness, and the issue is significant enough to sideline him Thursday. Look for Buddy Hield and Gui Santos to see more opportunities in Payton's absence.
Mar 19, 2025
Working through left knee soreness
Payton (knee) is listed as questionable for Thursday's game against the Raptors, Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton has played 22.9 minutes per game over his last seven outings and has averaged 12.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.4 steals over that span. However, he's working through a left knee issue that puts him in jeopardy of missing his third game since the beginning of February. Buddy Hield and Jonathan Kuminga would be slated to see more playing time off the bench if Payton is ruled out for Thursday's contest.
Mar 18, 2025
Posts 18 points from bench
Payton finished with 18 points (8-10 FG, 2-3 3Pt, 0-1 FT), three rebounds, one assist, one block and three steals in 26 minutes during Monday's 114-105 loss to the Nuggets.
ANALYSIS
Payton has come in handy as a sixth man. Stephen Curry gets little rest when healthy, and his ailing back almost produced a scratch for the All-Star. Payton will be instrumental in keeping. Curry fresh as the payoffs approach, and it wouldn't be surprising to see an uptick in Payton's production down the stretch.
Mar 11, 2025
Scores career-high 26 points
Payton chipped in 26 points (11-16 FG, 4-6 3Pt), two rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal over 28 minutes during Monday's 130-120 win over the Trail Blazers.
ANALYSIS
Payton, who typically has a very low usage rate with most of his attention focused on the defensive side of things, erupted for a career-high 26 points in the win. Lines like these have been few and far between for Payton, so fantasy managers should be hesitant to chase after more performances like these.
Mar 7, 2025
Just misses double-double Thursday
Payton totaled 16 points (7-12 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 2-2 FT), nine rebounds and one assist across 21 minutes off the bench during Thursday's 121-119 win over the Nets.
ANALYSIS
Payton fell just short of his first double-double of the season, and his first since Jan. 5, 2022. The veteran wing's increased shot volume was at least partially due to the fact that Brandin Podziemski (back) was able to play only one minute Thursday, and if the Warriors' starting two guard misses additional time, Payton could be one of the biggest beneficiaries. Even in his usual role on the second unit, Payton has scored in double digits in four of his last eight appearances, averaging 10.0 points, 3.3 boards, 1.5 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.8 threes in just 15.9 minutes a contest.
Mar 6, 2025
Will play vs. Brooklyn
Payton (nose) has been cleared to play in Thursday's game against the Nets.
ANALYSIS
Payton will return to the lineup for the Warriors after missing Tuesday's win against the Knicks. The defensive-minded guard is averaging 5.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game, shooting 56.4 percent from the floor.
Mar 5, 2025
Probable for Thursday
Payton (nose) has been listed as probable for Thursday's game against the Nets, Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton missed Tuesday's win against the Knicks but is trending toward returning to the floor for the Warriors in Brooklyn on Thursday. The 31-year-old guard is averaging 5.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game, shooting 56.4 percent from the floor this season.
Mar 4, 2025
Ruled out for Tuesday
Payton (nose) will not play Tuesday against the Knicks.
ANALYSIS
Payton suffered a nasal laceration during Monday's 119-101 win over the Hornets, and though he was hopeful to play Tuesday, the Warriors will hold him out. With Payton sidelined, it's possible that Moses Moody soaks up a bit more run for the Warriors.
Mar 3, 2025
Day-to-day with nose injury
Payton sustained a nasal laceration during Monday's 119-101 win over the Hornets, though he said after the game that he hopes to suit up in Tuesday's game against the Knicks, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton finished the game with nine points (4-7 FG, 1-4 3Pt), two rebounds, one steal and one block across 10 minutes before exiting to the locker room in the third quarter. The veteran swingman stayed on the floor for an extended period following the head-to-head collision, though his post-game comments suggest that he can be considered day-to-day moving forward.
Mar 3, 2025
Doesn't return Monday
Payton (nose) didn't return during Monday's 119-101 win over the Hornets and is still being evaluated, Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN.com reports. He finished the game with nine points (4-7 FG, 1-4 3Pt), two rebounds, one steal and one block across 10 minutes.
ANALYSIS
Payton sustained the injury during the third quarter as a result of a head-to-head collision with an opposing player. The Warriors should provide further details on the veteran swingman's status in the near future, as the club prepares for the second night of a back-to-back set against the Knicks on Tuesday.
Mar 3, 2025
Exits to locker room Monday
Payton sustained an apparent head/nose injury during the third quarter of Monday's game against the Hornets and walked back to the locker room, Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton stayed down for an extended period following head-to-head contact from an opposing player, and he walked off the floor with a bloody nose. The veteran swingman has provided a spark off the bench for the Warriors, and if he's unable to return, Buddy Hield and Gui Santos could see a bump in minutes the rest of the way.
Feb 22, 2025
Makes return from ankle issue
Payton (ankle) tallied four points (2-2 FG), two steals and one assist across 15 minutes in Friday's 132-108 win over the Kings.
ANALYSIS
A right peroneal contusion kept Payton off the floor for the Warriors' final game before the All-Star break Feb. 13 in Houston, but the All-Star break provided enough time for the 32-year-old to move past the issue. Payton continues to handle a limited role in the Golden State rotation, as he's been held under 20 minutes in eight consecutive appearances.
Feb 20, 2025
Not on injury report for Friday
Payton (ankle) is off the injury report for Friday's game against the Kings.
ANALYSIS
Payton is set to return to game action after missing the club's final matchup before the All-Star break due to a right peroneal contusion. Over his last five outings, the veteran swingman has averaged 6.4 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.0 assists across 11.4 minutes per contest off the bench.
Feb 13, 2025
Ruled out Thursday
Payton (right peroneal contusion) has been ruled out for Thursday's game against the Rockets, Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After a 14-point performance in Wednesday's loss to the Mavericks, Payton will miss Thursday's game with a right peroneal contusion. The veteran guard's production on both ends of the floor will be missed against Houston, with Brandin Podziemski likely shouldering the load in the backcourt.
Feb 3, 2025
Moves to bench against Magic
Payton is coming off the bench in Monday's game against the Magic, Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Draymond Green (calf) is back in Golden State's lineup Monday, pushing Payton back to the bench after the latter started six of his last seven games for the Warriors. Through 27 outings from the second unit this year, Payton has averaged 4.6 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 0.6 steals in 12.8 minutes, so he'll have far less fantasy appeal against Orlando.
Jan 30, 2025
Season-best performance in win
Payton closed Wednesday's 116-109 victory over the Thunder with 15 points (5-7 FG, 5-5 FT), nine rebounds, three assists and one steal over 25 minutes.
ANALYSIS
Payton recorded season-highs in points and rebounds during Wednesday's win. While the 31-year-old guard hasn't been a consistent volume scorer this season, he has tallied a steal in each of his last three outings. Until Draymond Green (calf) is able to return to action, Payton could remain in Golden State's starting unit.
Jan 29, 2025
Returns to starting lineup
Payton is in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Thunder, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Warriors continue to mix and match their starting five, with Payton making his ninth start of the season Wednesday. Across eight games in Golden State's first unit, the defensive-minded guard has averaged 6.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.5 blocks in 15.2 minutes.
Jan 28, 2025
Back to bench Tuesday
Payton will come off the bench Tuesday against the Jazz,John Dickinson of 95.7 The Game San Francisco reports.
ANALYSIS
After starting the last four games for the Warriors, Payton will come off the bench Tuesday against Utah. The veteran guard is coming off a solid game in the loss to the Lakers, finishing with 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal in 15 minutes against Los Angeles.
Jan 25, 2025
Will play Saturday vs. Los Angeles
Payton (illness) has been cleared to play in Saturday's game against the Lakers, Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton has been cleared to play against the visiting Lakers and will be in the starting lineup alongside Stephen Curry, Buddy Hield, Andrew Wiggins and Trayce Jackson-Davis. The veteran guard has been battling an illness this week but hasn't missed any time and will help the team defensively against their division rivals Saturday.
Jan 24, 2025
Probable for Saturday
Payton (illness) has been listed as probable for Saturday's game against the Lakers.
ANALYSIS
Payton has been battling an illness that hasn't kept him off the floor for the Warriors. The veteran guard appears to be trending toward taking the floor Saturday against Los Angeles, which is great news for Golden State and its backcourt.
Jan 23, 2025
Will play against Chicago
Payton (illness) has been upgraded to available for Thursday's game against the Bulls, Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton's status was uncertain ahead of Thursday's game against the Bulls, but he's been cleared to play. The veteran guard performed well in Wednesday's loss to the Kings, finishing with eight points, six rebounds, and an assist in 13 minutes for the Warriors.
Jan 23, 2025
Downgraded to questionable
Payton (illness) has been downgraded to questionable for Thursday's game against the Bulls.
ANALYSIS
After starting the last two games, Payton is trending toward not playing in Friday's game against Chicago. Fortunately, Brandin Podziemski will make his return against the Bulls, which should help pick up the slack in the backcourt.
Jan 23, 2025
Probable for Thursday
Payton (illness) has been listed as probable for Thursday's game against the Bulls.
ANALYSIS
Payton is battling an illness but is trending toward playing in Thursday's game against the Bulls. The 31-year-old guard is averaging 4.9 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 13.4 minutes per game this season for Golden State.
Jan 22, 2025
Good to go Wednesday
Payton (illness) will play in Wednesday's game against the Kings.
ANALYSIS
Payton was a game-time call for Wednesday's contest due to illness, but he's been cleared to suit up. Payton was part of the first unit for Monday's loss to Boston but played merely 12 minutes. He'll remain in the starting lineup Wednesday, per Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Jan 22, 2025
Questionable for Wednesday
Payton (illness) is questionable for Wednesday's game against the Kings.
ANALYSIS
Payton started Monday's game versus Boston, but played just 12 minutes in the blowout loss. Even while the Warriors are shorthanded, Payton is an underwhelming fantasy option with a low-usage rate and a lack of offensive upside.
Jan 20, 2025
Gets starting nod
Payton will start Monday's game versus Boston, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
With Draymond Green (calf) set to miss the next four games, Payton will get the first shot at replacing him. In four previous starts this season, Payton averaged 6.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals.
Jan 16, 2025
Gets 19 minutes in return
Payton (calf) tallied seven points (3-3 FG, 1-2 FT), six rebounds and one assist across 19 minutes Wednesday in the Warriors' 116-115 win over the Timberwolves.
ANALYSIS
Golden State was without Draymond Green (illness/back), Brandin Podziemski (abdomen), Jonathan Kuminga (ankle) and Kyle Anderson (hamstring) on Wednesday, but the return of Payton from a 10-game absence due to a calf strain helped restore some depth to the rotation. Payton is a versatile defensive piece for Golden State who should continue to hold down a spot on the second unit, but his minutes are likely to take a hit once the Warriors get healthier. Podziemski and Kuminga appear to be further away from returns, but Golden State could get both Green and/or Anderson back for its next game Saturday versus the Wizards.
Jan 15, 2025
Upgraded to available
Payton (calf) is available for Wednesday's game against the Timberwolves.
ANALYSIS
After sitting for 10 straight games due to a left calf strain, Payton will return to Golden State's lineup Wednesday. The 32-year-old guard has logged just 13.1 minutes per game over 28 contests (four starts) for the Warriors in 2024-25, but he could see decent run while Brandin Podziemski (abdomen) remains on the shelf. Payton's return figures to reduce Lindy Waters' playing time, although the former might be facing a minutes restriction right off the bat.
Jan 14, 2025
Upgraded to probable
Payton (calf) has been upgraded to probable for Wednesday's game against the Timberwolves.
ANALYSIS
After sitting for 10 straight games due to a left calf strain, Payton is likely to make his return to Golden State's lineup Wednesday. The 32-year-old guard is playing only 13.1 minutes per game over 28 contests (four starts) for the Warriors in 2024-25, but he could see decent run while Brandin Podziemski (abdomen) remains on the shelf. Payton's return would be likely be bad news for Lindy Waters' playing time.
Jan 12, 2025
Won't play Monday vs. Toronto
Payton (calf) has been ruled out for Monday's game against the Raptors, Blake Murphy of Sportsnet.ca reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton will miss his 10th straight game due to a left calf strain. The hope was that he would be able to return at some point during the Warriors' four-game road trip, which wraps up Wednesday against the Timberwolves.
Jan 12, 2025
Questionable for Monday
Coach Steve Kerr said Payton (calf) was limited at Sunday's practice and is questionable for Monday's game against the Raptors, Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton has missed nine straight games but is nearing a return to game action. He said Friday that he's aiming to suit up during the Golden State's current road trip, which has only two stops left -- Monday in Toronto and Wednesday in Minnesota. Even when Payton is cleared to play, he'll likely have a limited role off the bench for the struggling Warriors.
Jan 10, 2025
Hopeful to return during road trip
Payton (calf) said that he's hopeful to return at some point during the Warriors' four-game road trip, which began Thursday in Detroit and runs through Wednesday at Minnesota, Danny Emerman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton missed his eighth straight game in Thursday's 107-104 win over the Pistons, but he's due to be re-evaluated this weekend and could get the green light to play next week if the Warriors' training staff is satisfied with how he's been recovering from a left calf strain. Once healthy, the 32-year-old will likely fill a 10-to-15-minute-per-game role off the Golden State bench.
Jan 4, 2025
Out another week
Payton (calf) will re-evaluated in one week, the Warriors announced Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Payton has missed the past four games for the Warriors and will miss at least five more with this news. He's been cleared to begin on-court workouts and a return against the Raptors on Jan. 13 could be on the table.
Jan 3, 2025
Not ready to play Saturday
Payton (calf) is out for Saturday's game against the Grizzlies.
ANALYSIS
Payton was diagnosed with a calf strain on Dec. 26, and he'll miss his fifth consecutive outing Saturday due to the injury. With Brandin Podziemski (abdomen) also ruled out, Lindy Waters and Moses Moody should pick up additional minutes off the bench for the Warriors.
Dec 26, 2024
Out one week
Payton has been diagnosed with mild left calf strain and will be re-evaluated in one week.
ANALYSIS
Payton will be sidelined for his team's next three games and potentially longer after suffering the injury during Wednesday's matchup against the Lakers. Kyle Anderson and Lindy Waters could see a few more minutes until Payton is cleared to return.
Dec 25, 2024
Will suit up
Payton (calf) is available for Wednesday's game against the Lakers.
ANALYSIS
Payton and Kyle Anderson (illness) have been upgraded from questionable to available, so the Warriors will be at full strength for Christmas Day. Before sitting out Monday's game against the Pacers, Payton averaged 5.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 0.9 steals in 16.4 minutes per game over his past eight appearances.
Dec 24, 2024
Questionable to face Lakers
Payton (calf) is questionable for Wednesday's game against the Lakers.
ANALYSIS
Payton missed Monday's game against Indiana with a bruised left calf and is at risk of missing a second straight contest due to the injury. If Payton can't go Wednesday, Brandin Podziemski and Moses Moody could see more action.
Dec 23, 2024
Ruled out Monday
Payton (calf) has been ruled out for Monday's game against the Pacers, Dustin Dopirak of The Indianapolis Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton was a late addition to the injury report before having been ruled out due to a left calf contusion. The 32-year-old has averaged only 13.4 minutes per game over 27 regular-season appearances, so his absence shouldn't cause many waves in the rotation.
Dec 23, 2024
Iffy for Monday
Payton is questionable for Monday's game against the Pacers with a left calf contusion.
ANALYSIS
Payton was a very late addition to the injury report which is a bad sign for his availability. The veteran guard has averaged 13.4 minutes per contest this season, so his status doesn't carry many fantasy implications.
Dec 15, 2024
Back to bench
Payton will come off the bench during Sunday's game against the Mavericks, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton will move back to the bench due to Andrew Wiggins returning to the lineup. In his last four appearances off the bench, Payton holds averages of 4.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.0 assist in 15.3 minutes per contest.
Dec 8, 2024
Starting Sunday
Payton will enter the starting lineup for Sunday's game against Minnesota, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.

Dec 6, 2024
Likely to suit up Friday
Payton (knee) is probable for Friday's game against the Timberwolves, Alan Horton of the Timberwolves Radio Network reports.

Nov 30, 2024

Nov 29, 2024
Likely to suit up for Saturday
Payton is listed as probable for Saturday's game against the Suns due to right adductor tightness.
ANALYSIS
Payton will likely suit up Saturday barring any setbacks. The 31-year-old has received double-digit minutes in three of the Warriors' last five outings, during which he averaged 5.0 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists while shooting 54.5 percent from the field across 12.8 minutes per game.
Nov 23, 2024
Playing Saturday
Payton (knee) is available for Saturday's game against the Spurs.
ANALYSIS
Payton was on the injury report due to left knee inflammation, but he will play Saturday. Over his last five games, he's averaged 2.4 points and 2.2 rebounds over 10.4 minutes per game.
Nov 23, 2024
Deemed probable
Payton is probable for Saturday's game against the Spurs due to left knee inflammation.

Nov 20, 2024
Officially playing Wednesday
Payton (calf) is active for Wednesday's game against Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Payton will maintain his perfect attendance on the season despite dealing with the right calf tightness earlier Wednesday. He has become the seventh guard in Golden State's rotation with the emergence of Lindy Waters, although Payton's defense still earns him bench minutes on a nightly basis.
Nov 20, 2024
Iffy for Wednesday
Payton is questionable for Wednesday's game against the Hawks due to right calf tightness.
ANALYSIS
Payton was a very late addition to the injury report which doesn't bode well for his status. If the veteran defensive specialist is unable to suit up, Brandin Podziemski and Lindy Waters would be candidates to see increased minutes.
Nov 10, 2024
Slotted to bench
Payton will come off the bench during Sunday's game against the Thunder, Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton started Friday's contest against the Cavaliers, but he will return to a bench role Sunday. Payton has averaged 5.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists across 13.8 minutes per contest over his last four appearances.
Nov 8, 2024
Starting Friday
Payton will start at shooting guard in Friday's matchup with the Cavaliers,
ANALYSIS
Payton will replace Moses Moody in the starting lineup, as head coach Steve Kerr will look to add some more defense to the starting unit versus the Cavaliers strong backcourt. He scored six points, three rebounds and three steals across 16 minutes in his only other start this season.
Nov 6, 2024
Won't start Wednesday
Payton won't start Wednesday's game against the Celtics.
ANALYSIS
On Monday, coach Steve Kerr gave Payton his first start since 2022-23 when he was a member of the Trail Blazers. However, that was likely just so the defensive-minded guard could annoy ex-Warriors guard Jordan Poole to begin the matchup versus Washington. Moses Moody moves back into the starting lineup, but the Warriors have a deep rotation, even with Brandin Podziemski (illness) sidelined.
Nov 5, 2024
Plays 16 minutes as starter
Payton finished with six points (3-3 FG), three rebounds and three assists across 16 minutes during Monday's 125-112 win over the Wizards.
ANALYSIS
Payton made his first start since 2022-23 when he was a member of the Trail Blazers, but he played only 15 minutes. Buddy Hield (28), Jonathan Kuminga (25) and Kyle Anderson (16) all played more minutes off the bench. Payton is a defensive-minded guard, who was likely only inserted into the starting lineup to give ex-Warriors guard Jordan Poole fits to begin Monday's game.
Nov 4, 2024
Making first start of season
Payton will start Monday's game against the Wizards, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
With Stephen Curry (ankle) back in action, the Warriors will start Curry, Payton, Andrew Wiggins, Draymond Green and Trayce Jackson-Davis. It's Payton's first start since 2022-23 when he was a member of the Trail Blazers.
Oct 11, 2024
Starting vs. Sacramento
Payton is in the starting lineup for Friday's preseason game against the Kings, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Warriors are fielding a different starting unit for the third consecutive contest, and it's clear head coach Steve Karr wants to see what's working and what isn't with the start of the regular season just around the corner. Payton will start at small forward, flanked by Moses Moody, Stephen Curry, Kyle Anderson and Draymond Green.
Jun 19, 2024
Opts into player option
Payton exercised his $9.1 million player option for the 2024-25 season Wednesday, ESPN's Kendra Andrews reports.
ANALYSIS
By opting into his option, Payton will now be able to negotiate a possible contract extension with the Warriors. Payton has had some tough luck with injuries in recent seasons, but he's invaluable to the Warriors for his perimeter defense. In 44 appearances last season, Payton averaged 5.5 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 0.9 steals.

Apr 15, 2024
Out for Play-In Tournament
Payton (calf) has been ruled out for the Play-In Tournament, which starts Tuesday in Sacramento, Kendra Andrews of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
If the Warriors beat the Kings on Tuesday, they'd play the loser of a Pelicans-Lakers matchup, but Payton won't be able to play in that matchup if Golden State advances. The defensive-minded guard missed the final three games of the regular season due to a left calf strain, and his missing bench minutes will likely be absorbed by Brandin Podziemski, Chris Paul and maybe Moses Moody.
Apr 13, 2024
Won't play Sunday
Payton (calf) is out for Sunday's game against the Jazz.
ANALYSIS
Payton will end the regular season on the sidelines, but he hasn't been ruled out for the Play-In Tournament yet. Payton averaged just 5.5 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game across 44 bench outings in 2023-24, so he shouldn't carry a lot of fantasy upside when he's available once again.
Apr 12, 2024
Won't suit up Friday
Payton (calf) will not play Friday against the Pelicans, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
No surprise here, as Payton was previously deemed doubtful. Coach Steve Kerr implied that the Warriors are simply being caution for the second leg of this back-to-back set.
Apr 12, 2024
Unlikely to play Friday
Payton (calf) is doubtful for Friday's game against New Orleans.
ANALYSIS
Payton continues to deal with left calf tightness and will likely be forced to miss a second consecutive game Friday. Assuming he's sidelined, his final chance to suit up during the regular season will be Sunday against the Jazz.
Apr 11, 2024
Ruled out for Thursday
Payton (calf) will not play Thursday against the Trail Blazers, Sam Gordon of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton was unable to shed his questionable tag, though the veteran is considered day-to-day. It's possible the defensive specialist could return against the Pelicans on Friday.
Apr 11, 2024
Added to injury report
Payton is questionable for Thursday's game against the Trail Blazers due to left calf tightness.
ANALYSIS
Payton wasn't on the Warriors' initial injury report, but his status is up in the air a few hours before tipoff. If he's cleared to play, Payton could see a slight uptick in playing time since Klay Thompson (knee) has been ruled out.
Apr 9, 2024
Available to face Lakers
Payton (ankle) is available to face the Lakers on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Payton was listed as probable Tuesday, so his availability here isn't entirely surprising. However, he is not expected to carry a lot of fantasy upside due to his bench role.
Apr 8, 2024
Probable vs. LAL
Payton (ankle) is probable for Tuesday's game against the Lakers.
ANALYSIS
Payton will likely continue to play through a left ankle impingement. He's appeared in 15 straight games, averaging 4.8 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.2 steals-plus-blocks in 15.6 minutes during that stretch.
Apr 7, 2024
Officially available vs. Utah
Payton (ankle) is available for Sunday's game against the Jazz, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton was probable for Sunday's matchup, so his availability isn't particularly surprising. He could see more playing time than usual since Stephen Curry (rest) and Andrew Wiggins (ankle) have been ruled out.
Apr 6, 2024
Probable vs. Utah
Payton is probable to face the Jazz on Sunday due to a left ankle impingement.
ANALYSIS
Payton could be one of the beneficiaries of the absence of Stephen Curry (rest) for Sunday's contest. Even if that's the case and he experiences an uptick in minutes, he should remain an option off the bench for Golden State.
Apr 5, 2024
Good to go Friday
Payton (ankle) will play Friday against the Mavericks.
ANALYSIS
Payton will shed his questionable tag for the second leg of this back-to-back set. With Andrew Wiggins (ankle) joining Jonathan Kuminga (knee) on the sidelines, there could be more minutes available for Payton.
Apr 5, 2024
Deemed questionable for Friday
Payton (ankle) is questionable for Friday's game against the Mavericks.
ANALYSIS
Payton was probable for Thursday's game against the Rockets due to a sore left ankle and continues to deal with the issue before the second half of the back-to-back set. If he's available, he could see an uptick in playing time if Andrew Wiggins (ankle), who is also considered questionable, is ruled out.
Apr 4, 2024
Available to play Thursday
Payton (ankle) will play Thursday against the Rockets.
ANALYSIS
Payton will shed his probable tag and will suit up Thursday evening. The veteran defender has averaged 14.6 minutes per contest over his last 10 outings.
Apr 3, 2024
Probable for Thursday
Payton is probable for Thursday's game against the Rockets due to left ankle soreness.
ANALYSIS
Payton is dealing with some soreness in his ankle, but it doesn't look like it'll keep him off the court. Check back for official confirmation on his status closer to Thursday's tip-off.
Mar 10, 2024
Clear for Monday
Payton (illness) has been removed from the injury report in advance of Monday's game against San Antonio.
ANALYSIS
Payton is set to return from a one-game absence due to illness, although it's unclear if the ailment was nagging him during a scoreless appearance on March 7 as well. Assuming he returns at full strength, Payton will likely reprise a 15-20 minute workload, even with Stephen Curry (ankle) currently out.
Mar 9, 2024
Ruled out for Saturday
Payton (illness) is out for Saturday's game versus the Spurs.
ANALYSIS
With Payton joining Stephen Curry (ankle) on the shelf, the Warriors could turn to Chris Paul, Klay Thompson and Moses Moody to soak up the bulk of the backcourt minutes.
Mar 9, 2024
Iffy for Saturday
Payton is now listed as questionable for Saturday's game versus the Spurs due to a general illness.
ANALYSIS
Payton's late addition to the injury report is a bad sign of his availability Saturday. If Payton is ruled out, Moses Moody and Klay Thompson are candidates to receive increased playing time.
Mar 8, 2024
Scoreless in loss
Payton racked up zero points (0-1 FG), two rebounds and one assist over 11 minutes during Thursday's 125-122 loss to the Bulls.
ANALYSIS
Payton was held scoreless for the third time over his last seven appearances despite playing double-digit minutes in six of those contests. The defensive-minded wing's reserve role is consistent when healthy, but he remains outside of fantasy relevant in standard leagues. Payton may see an uptick in playing time and usage if Stephen Curry (ankle) has to miss multiple games after leaving Thursday's loss early, but the former is more of a wait-and-see option as opposed to a must-roster replacement, as Chris Paul, Brandin Podziemski and Klay Thompson will presumably absorb most of Curry's missing usage.
Feb 23, 2024
Available for Friday
Payton (illness) will play in Friday's game against the Hornets, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton was unable to play Thursday against the Lakers, but he was upgraded to probable prior to this update. Since returning to the rotation on Feb. 10, Payton has yet to eclipse 15 minutes in four appearances.
Feb 23, 2024
Expected to suit up Friday
Payton (illness) is listed as probable for Friday's game versus the Hornets.
ANALYSIS
Payton is expected to return to action Friday after missing Golden State's previous contest with a non-COVID illness. The 30-year-old guard will likely serve as one of the team's primary backcourt options off the bench if he's upgraded to available.
Feb 22, 2024
Won't play Thursday
Payton (illness) has been ruled out for Thursday's game against the Lakers.
ANALYSIS
Payton was questionable for Thursday's matchup due to an illness, and he'll be unavailable for the Warriors' first game following the All-Star break. Lester Quinones and Moses Moody could see additional run Thursday.
Feb 21, 2024
Iffy to face Lakers
Payton is listed as questionable for Thursday's game against the Lakers due to illness, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton appears to have picked up a sickness during the All-Star Break and is at risk of missing Thursday's contest. If he can't go, expect Lester Quinones and Moses Moody to pick up some extra minutes.
Feb 13, 2024
Perfect from field since return
Payton posted 11 points (4-4 FG, 1-1 3Pt, 2-2 FT), two rebounds and two assists in 15 minutes Monday in the Warriors' 129-107 win over the Jazz.
ANALYSIS
After missing 16 consecutive games with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, Payton has proven to be a strong two-way presence off the bench in his first two games back from injury. Though the Warriors value him mainly for his defensive versatility, Payton's contributions on the offense end have been more impressive over his last two contests; he's tallied 22 points while going a perfect 9-for-9 from the field and gathering four assists compared to one turnover. Payton may earn a slight uptick in minutes for his efforts, but since he's a low-usage player whose red-hot shooting shouldn't be viewed as remotely sustainable, he's well off the fantasy radar in other than the deepest of leagues.
Feb 9, 2024
Not on injury report
Payton (hamstring) is no longer on the injury report ahead of Saturday's game versus the Suns.
ANALYSIS
Payton has been sidelined since Jan. 2 because of a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, but he returned to practice on Tuesday and is officially cleared to play. Across 16 appearances this season, Payton averaged 5.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 16.3 minutes.
Feb 6, 2024
Return could be near
Payton (hamstring) has returned to team practice and is regarded as day-to-day, Kendra Andrews of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton has been sidelined since Jan. 2 because of a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, although he has been limited to just four contests since Nov. 18 due to hamstring, calf and foot injuries. His ramp up will likely be gradual, but his hounding defense would be a welcome addition to Golden State's backcourt/wing depth, which has been salvaged by strong play from rookie Brandin Podziemski of late.
Jan 22, 2024
Re-evaluated in two weeks
The Warriors announced Monday that Payton (hamstring) will be re-evaluated in two weeks.
ANALYSIS
This likely rules Payton out until Feb. 7 against the 76ers. Payton has been sidelined since he suffered a hamstring strain on Jan. 2, but he's making good progress and has been cleared for individual workouts.
Jan 4, 2024
Officially out at least three weeks
The Warriors announced Thursday that Payton has been diagnosed with a grade 2 strain in his left hamstring and will be re-evaluated in three weeks.
ANALYSIS
Payton suffered his injury in Tuesday's game versus the Mavericks after missing the previous 13 contests with a calf injury. Moses Moody and Brandin Podziemski will likely continue to receive extended minutes in his absence. Payton will look to return to action at the end of January at the earliest.
Jan 3, 2024
Slated to miss several weeks
Payton, who left Tuesday's win over Orlando due to a hamstring strain, will miss several weeks, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Payton was playing in his second game back following a month-long absence due to a calf strain when he suffered the hamstring injury. The defensive-minded wing has battled injuries his entire career, playing more than 30 games in a season just once (2021-22). In Payton's absence, Moses Moody and Brandin Podziemski are candidates for increased roles.
Jan 3, 2024
Out for remainder of game
Payton won't return to Tuesday's game versus the Magic due to a left hamstring strain. He will end the contest with two points (1-5 FG, 1-3 3Pt) and four rebounds in 11 minutes.
ANALYSIS
Payton injured his hamstring while defending an inbounds and fell awkwardly, Kendra Andrews of ESPN.com reports. The 30-year-old guard was in his second game back from a 13-game absence due to a calf injury. Payton's next chance to suit up is Thursday's matchup with Denver.
Dec 31, 2023
Takes on light role in return
Payton (calf) finished Saturday's 132-122 loss to the Mavericks with two points (1-3 FG, 0-1 3Pt) and one block over nine minutes.
ANALYSIS
Making his return from a 13-game absence due to a right calf strain, Payton took back a spot in the rotation from Moses Moody, who didn't leave the bench in a coach's decision. While Golden State values his defensive versatility, Payton may not have a path to taking on greater minutes now that he's healthy again, especially while rookie guard Brandin Podziemski has played his way into a larger role in recent weeks.
Dec 29, 2023
Will play Saturday
Payton (calf) is available for Saturday's game against the Mavericks, Kendra Andrews of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton will return from a 13-game absence Saturday, but he will operate under a minutes restriction and presumably handle a small role off the bench. Regardless, the defensive-minded wing's presence will be a solid boost in the absence of Draymond Green (suspension).
Dec 27, 2023
Remains out against Miami
Payton (calf) won't play in Thursday's game versus the Heat.
ANALYSIS
Payton's absence streak will extend to 13 games Thursday due to a right calf strain. However, he has returned to practice and appears to be gearing up for a return. Payton's next chance to take the floor is Saturday's matchup with Dallas.
Dec 27, 2023
Practices Wednesday
Coach Steve Kerr said Payton (calf) participated in half-court live action during Wednesday's but his status for Thursday's game versus Miami is uncertain, Kendra Andrews of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton has missed Golden State's last 12 games due to a right calf strain. While his return to practice is a good sign that he will return to action soon, an official injury report should clarify Payton's status for Thursday's contest.
Dec 21, 2023
Return pushed back another week
The Warriors announced Thursday that Payton (calf) is making good progress in his recovery, has been cleared to begin participating in parts of team practice and will be re-evaluated in one week.
ANALYSIS
Payton hasn't played since Nov. 28 due to a strained right calf he suffered against Sacramento. While the 30-year-old guard hasn't been cleared to fully practice, he is gearing up for a new return to action.
Dec 14, 2023
Out another week
The Warriors announced Thursday that Payton (calf) has been cleared to begin some light on-court individual work and will be re-evaluated again in another week.
ANALYSIS
Payton sustained a torn right calf in late November and has progressed well in his recovery over the past few weeks. It's encouraging that he's been cleared to resume on-court work, and he'll presumably now shift his focus toward ramping up ahead of a potential return to game action.
Dec 7, 2023
Making good progress
Payton (calf) is making good progress and will be re-evaluated in one week, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton suffered a torn right calf on Nov. 29 and remains without a timetable, though he is trending in the right direction. Brandin Podziemski is likely to continue playing extended minutes for the second unit in the meantime.
Nov 30, 2023
Out at least a week
The Warriors announced Thursday that an MRI revealed Payton suffered a strain right calf in Tuesday's game and will be re-evaluated in one week.
ANALYSIS
The Warriors' statement seems more positive than a recent report from Shams Charania of The Athletic, who stated that Payton had suffered a torn right calf and would be out indefinitely. It now appears that Payton's absence could be shorter than initially expected, with a return date in 2023 a possibility.
Nov 29, 2023
Set for lengthy absence
The Warriors announced Wednesday that Payton suffered a torn right calf and will be sidelined indefinitely, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton suffered his injury against the Kings on Tuesday. Moses Moody and Brandin Podziesmki are candidates to receive extended minutes in his absence. While there is no set timetable for his return, Payton will likely be unable to retake the court until at least the beginning of 2024.
Nov 29, 2023
Set for MRI
Payton is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his right calf Wednesday, Marc J. Spears of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton will get a more thorough examination after the right calf injury forced him out in the third quarter of Tuesday's 124-123 loss to the Kings. Before departing, Payton tallied seven points (3-4 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 1-1 FT), five rebounds, two steals, one assists and one block in 17 minutes. If Payton isn't cleared to play in the Warriors' next game Thursday against the Clippers, head coach Steve Kerr could reopen a spot in the rotation for rookie Brandin Podziemski, who didn't get off the bench Tuesday.
Nov 29, 2023
Won't return against Sacramento
Payton has been ruled out for the remainder of Tuesday's game versus the Kings due to a right calf injury, Kendra Andrews of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton tallied seven points, five rebounds, two steals, one block and one assist in 17 minutes before exiting Tuesday's contest early. With Chris Paul (leg) also out, the Warriors' bench backcourt will be left short-handed. Payton's status for Thursday's matchup with the Clippers is uncertain.
Nov 25, 2023
Records pair of defensive counters
Payton (foot) notched four points (2-3 FG, 0-1 3Pt), three rebounds, one steal and one block in 18 minutes in Friday's 118-112 win over the Spurs.
ANALYSIS
Making his return from a three-game absence, Payton settled back into his typical low-usage role on the second unit while bringing most of his fantasy value on the defensive end. Payton's spot in the Golden State rotation appears stable, but he's unlikely to see a substantial enough of a spike in minutes anytime soon to make for an interesting fantasy option outside of deeper leagues.
Nov 24, 2023
Good to go Friday
Payton (foot) is available for Friday's game against the Spurs.
ANALYSIS
Payton missed the past three games for the Warriors, but his return will provide a big lift for them on the defensive end. Despite seeing limited minutes most nights, Payton has been a solid source of steals for fantasy managers.
Nov 24, 2023
Downgraded to questionable
Payton (foot) was downgraded to questionable for Friday's game against the Spurs.
ANALYSIS
Payton was previously listed as probable, but it appears his foot sprain isn't healing quite as well as anticipated. He's at risk of missing a fourth straight game.
Nov 23, 2023
Probable for Friday
Payton (foot) is probable for Friday's game against the Spurs.
ANALYSIS
Payton missed the last three games for the Warriors due to a foot sprain, but he's expected to return Friday which could give the Warriors a spark on the defensive end. Despite seeing just 17.3 minutes per game, Payton is averaging 1.2 steals.
Nov 22, 2023
Downgraded to out
Payton (foot) has been ruled out for Wednesday's game against the Suns.
ANALYSIS
Payton has been downgraded from questionable to out and will miss his third straight game due to a left foot sprain. A recent MRI revealed no structural damage, and he was able to scrimmage during Tuesday's practice, so Payton should be able to return soon. His next chance to suit up will come Friday versus the Spurs.
Nov 21, 2023
Iffy for Wednesday
Payton (foot) is questionable for Wednesday's game against the Suns.
ANALYSIS
Payton has missed back-to-back contests due to a left foot sprain, but a recent MRI revealed no structural damage. Per Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area, the defensive-minded guard was able to scrimmage during Tuesday's practice, which is a step in the right direction, but he'll likely be a game-time decision Wednesday.
Nov 19, 2023
Won't play Monday
Payton (foot) has been ruled out for Monday's game against Houston.
ANALYSIS
Payton recently underwent an MRI that revealed no structural damage in his foot, but he'll still be forced to miss a second consecutive game due to his minor foot sprain. His next chance to suit up will be Wednesday against Phoenix.
Nov 18, 2023
Diagnosed with minor foot sprain
Payton (foot) has no structural damage in his left foot following an MRI on Saturday. He is questionable to play Monday against Houston.
ANALYSIS
Payton is dealing with a left foot sprain, which will force him to miss Saturday's game against Oklahoma City. Brandin Podziemski has been a revelation for Golden State and should continue seeing additional usage. Golden State will be porous defensively as Payton misses time while Draymond Green is suspended.
Nov 17, 2023
Won't play Saturday
Payton (ankle) has been ruled out for Saturday's game against the Thunder, Kendra Andrews of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton suffered a left ankle sprain during Thursday's matchup against the Thunder and will miss at least one additional contest. Initial X-rays were negative, but his status moving forward remains unclear. Payton's next chance to suit up will come Monday against Houston. In his absence, Cory Joseph Moses Moody and Brandin Podziemski are candidates for increased roles, especially if Stephen Curry (knee) remains sidelined.
Nov 16, 2023
Done for night
Payton will not return to Thursday's game against the Thunder due to a sprained left ankle, Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. He finished with one point, one rebound and one steal in eight minutes.
ANALYSIS
X-rays were negative, so hopefully this will be a day-to-day issue. If Payton is unable to play in Saturday's rematch against the Thunder, we could see more of Cory Joseph, Moses Moody and Brandin Podziemski.
Nov 12, 2023
Available against Minnesota
Payton (finger) is available for Sunday's game against the Timberwolves, Shayna Rubin of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Nov 12, 2023
Iffy for Sunday's contest
Payton is questionable for Sunday's contest against the Timberwolves due to a right finger infection.
ANALYSIS
Payton recently missed a contest due to an illness, but he's been otherwise healthy. If the defensive-minded guard is sidelined, Brandin Podziemski, Moses Moody and Cory Joseph could see increased bench roles versus Minnesota.

ANALYSIS
Payton will return to the lineup for Saturday's contest after missing the previous outing with a non-COVID illness. Payton is averaging 7.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 1.0 assists in 19.9 minutes across his first eight appearances of the season.

ANALYSIS

Nov 8, 2023
Won't play Wednesday
Payton (illness) is out for Wednesday's game versus the Nuggets.
ANALYSIS
Payton (illness) has been downgraded from questionable to out Wednesday due to a non-COVID illness. His next chance to suit up is Saturday's matchup with Cleveland.
Nov 8, 2023
Questionable Wednesday
Payton is questionable for Wednesday's game against the Nuggets due to an illness.
ANALYSIS
Payton was a late addition to Wednesday's injury report, and it's unclear whether he'll be able to suit up against Denver. If he's unable to play, Moses Moody, Cory Joseph and Brandin Podziemski are candidates to see an uptick in minutes.
Nov 7, 2023
Records two steals
Payton chipped in six points (3-5 FG), six rebounds and two steals in 24 minutes during Monday's 120-109 win over the Pistons.
ANALYSIS
Payton has been a key part of the second unit in Golden State and coach Steve Kerr has really talked him up this season. However, he's generally a low-usage player, so most of his fantasy value will come from his elite steal rate.
Oct 30, 2023
Drops 15 points
Payton totaled 15 points (6-8 FG, 3-4 3Pt), four rebounds, one assist, one block and three steals across 19 minutes during Sunday's 106-95 victory over the Rockets.
ANALYSIS
This wasn't Payton's largest workload, but it was his best game by far. His usage is usually pretty low on the offensive end, so this will likely end up being an outlier performance. The production in steals we're seeing is something he's excelled at for years.
May 9, 2023
Scores 15 points in start
Payton notched 15 points (7-9 FG, 1-2 3Pt), three rebounds and two assists over 23 minutes during Monday's 104-101 loss to the Lakers in Game 4 of the Western Conference Semifinals.
ANALYSIS
Payton drew his first start of the playoffs and played well across 23 minutes, his most since suffering an injury in Game 2 of the opening-round series versus Sacramento. The defensive-minded guard was left open on numerous occasions and took advantage by collecting a playoff-high 15 points, but it's unclear if the Warriors will stick with the same game plan, as they face a 3-1 hole with the series shifting back to Golden State.
May 8, 2023
Expected to enter starting lineup
Payton will join the starting lineup for Monday's Game 5 against the Lakers, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Warriors had already hinted that Payton would see more playing time in Game 5 after he struggled with an illness throughout Game 4, and this report only solidifies that the Oregon State product will shoulder more minutes. He's seen inconsistent playing time through the first three games of the series, averaging 11.3 minutes to go along with 5.7 points and 3.7 rebounds.
Apr 25, 2023
Should play more in Game 5
Head coach Steve Kerr said Tuesday that Payton (illness) wasn't himself in Game 4, but he expects the defensive-minded guard to play more in Game 5, C.J. Holmes of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
After posting 10.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.0 assists in 23.5 minutes over the first two matchups of the opening-round series, Payton missed Game 3 due to an illness and saw just seven minutes in Game 4. His defensive prowess makes him one of Golden State's best options on De'Aaron Fox, who's expected to play Wednesday despite a broken index finger on his shooting hand, so Payton's health and effectiveness should be a major storyline during the critical Game 5.
Apr 23, 2023
Cleared to suit up Sunday
Payton (illness) is available for Sunday's Game 4 against the Kings, Connor Letourneau of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Payton has been upgraded from probable to available and will play in Game 4 after an aliment kept him sidelined for Game 3. Through the first two matchups of the opening-round series, the defensive-minded guard averaged 10.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.0 assists in 23.5 minutes per game.
Apr 22, 2023
Upgraded to probable
Payton (illness) has been upgraded to probable ahead of Sunday's Game 4 against the Kings, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The fact that Payton has been upgraded to probable means he shouldn't have problems playing off the bench Sunday. He has averaged 10.5 points across 23.5 minutes per game in his two appearances during the series.
Apr 22, 2023
Returns to practice
Payton (illness) participated in Saturday's practice and is on track to play in Game 4 against the Kings on Sunday, Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton missed Game 3 due to an illness but appears likely to suit up Sunday. If Payton is cleared for action, his return will likely result in decreased playing time for Donte DiVincenzo and Anthony Lamb.
Apr 20, 2023
Ruled out Thursday
Payton (illness) will not play in Game 3 versus the Kings on Thursday according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Payton missed practice on Wednesday and wasn't able to shed his questionable tag. Payton played a pretty big role in the first couple of games in this series with minutes in the 20s, so we could see guys like Donte DiVincenzo and Anthony Lamb get a bigger opportunity.
Apr 19, 2023
Iffy against Sacramento
Payton is questionable for Game 3 against the Kings on Thursday due to a general illness.
ANALYSIS
Payton appears to have contracted a non-COVID illness that has his status for Game 3 in doubt. Payton has logged 20 and 27 minutes in the first two games of the series, respectively, so his potential absence could open up more minutes for Donte DiVincenzo and Anthony Lamb. With Jordan Poole (ankle) and Andrew Wiggins (shoulder) also questionable, Golden State could be forced to dig deep into their bench Thursday.
Apr 18, 2023
Solid production off bench
Payton closed Monday's 114-106 loss to the Kings in Game 2 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals with 13 points (5-6 FG, 2-3 3Pt, 1-2 FT), six rebounds and two steals across 27 minutes.
ANALYSIS
Payton sank a pair of triples, and outside of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins, he was the only Warrior to score in double figures. With Jordan Poole struggling to stay on the court, Payton figures to continue garnering major minutes as Golden State's best defender on De'Aaron Fox.
Apr 5, 2023
Plays 17 minutes off bench
Payton (Achilles) contributed eight points (4-8 FG, 0-2 3Pt), four rebounds and one assist across 17 minutes during Tuesday's 136-125 win over the Thunder.
ANALYSIS
Payton was questionable heading into the contest with Achilles soreness, but he suited up for a fifth straight game and provided his usual production off the bench. Since returning to action following a lengthy injury absence, Payton has averaged 5.2 points and 3.4 rebounds in 14.0 minutes over five appearances.
Mar 28, 2023
Available to play Tuesday
Payton (Achilles) will be available to play Tuesday against the Pelicans according to C.J. Holmes of the San Francisco Chronicle.
ANALYSIS
Payton was previously considered questionable before this update. He was outstanding in his return to action Sunday versus Minnesota, scoring nine points in just 15 minutes.
Mar 28, 2023
Lands on injury report
Payton is questionable for Tuesday's game against the Pelicans due to right Achilles soreness.
ANALYSIS
Payton, who returned to action Sunday following a month-and-a-half-long absence due to an abdomen injury, now finds himself on the injury report with Achilles soreness. The severity the issue remains unclear, but a late addition to the injury report is never a good sign. If he's ruled out, more minutes will be available for Jonathan Kuminga, Anthony Lamb and Donte DiVincenzo.
Mar 27, 2023
Effective in debut
Payton registered nine points (3-4 FG, 1-2 3Pt, 2-2 FT), two rebounds, one assist and one block across 15 minutes during Sunday's 99-96 loss to the Timberwolves.
ANALYSIS
Payton was greeted with warm applause upon entering the game, marking his return to the Warriors after a brief injury-ridden stint with the Trail Blazers. Opportunity opened up for Payton after Donte DiVincenzo proved ineffective against the Timberwolves' defense, and his shot was mostly on point in 15 minutes of work. The game was a step in the right direction for Payton, who should be healthy enough to make the team's 15-man roster for the playoffs.
Mar 25, 2023
Will make season debut Sunday
Payton (abdomen) will make his season debut Sunday against the Timberwolves, Chris Haynes of Turner Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton was listed as probable for Sunday's contest, but now he's been upgraded and will be available to make his season debut. Given that he hasn't played in quite a while, he's expected to come off the bench under a strict minutes' restriction.
Mar 25, 2023
Probable Sunday
Payton (abdoment) is considered probable for Sunday's tilt against the Timberwolves, Madeline Kenney of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton went through a light practice Saturday and his status Sunday will seemingly depend on how he is feeling closer to tip-off. He has not played for the Warriors since being traded from Portland on Feb. 12. Thus, if he does indeed get the green light, expect him to get eased back into the swing of things.
Mar 23, 2023
Returning to practice Saturday
Payton (abdomen) has intensified his on-court workouts and is expected to participate in Saturday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Payton has yet to play for Golden State since being traded from Portland on Feb. 12 while rehabilitating his right adductor. After Saturday's practice, his status for Sunday's game versus Minnesota will be determined.
Mar 21, 2023
Will be re-evaluated Thursday
Payton is scheduled to have his abdominal injury re-evaluated Thursday, and there's optimism within the Warriors' organization that he'll be able to return before the regular season concludes, NBA Insider Brett Siegel reports.
ANALYSIS
The Warriors could certainly use GPII's defense, so he'll be a welcome sight once he's able to return, although it's unlikely he'll earn enough minutes to make a major impact in fantasy hoops. He'll likely be eased back into things slowly, so the end of the regular season will be more like a tune-up for him to prepare for post-season play.
Mar 13, 2023
Making solid progress
The Warriors announced Monday that Payton (abdomen) is making good progress in his recovery and has started on-court activities. He's expected to ramp up his on-court workouts in the next few days.
ANALYSIS
Payton is still recovering from a right adductor injury and hasn't seen any live action since joining Golden State on Feb. 12. He's set for another evaluation in 10 days, and if his workouts continue to go as planned, it's certainly possible that he could make his team debut later on in March.
Feb 13, 2023
To be re-evaluated in a month
Warriors GM Bob Myers said Payton (core muscle injury) will be re-evaluated in one month according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
For legal reasons, Myers wasn't able to say much about the specifics of the injury. However, he did say he was hopeful to have Payton back in time for the playoffs. That would be a pretty big lift for the Warriors given how well he played for them late last season.
Feb 12, 2023
Officially traded to Warriors
The Warriors will go through with the four-team swap that landed them Payton II, despite Payton II not passing his physical, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Portland reportedly did not disclose to the Warriors during trade discussions that GPII had been taking Toradol in order to numb the pain enough with his core injury to get on the floor, and he's now expected to miss a majority of the remainder of the regular season. The NBA is investigating what happened, and Portland could suffer some consequences for their failure to disclose that information, but ultimately, Golden State decided to accept the trade anyway and bring back a key piece from their 2022 championship team.
Feb 10, 2023
Trade to Warriors in jeopardy
Payton failed a physical exam which places the four-team trade between the Warriors, Blazers, Pistons and Hawks in jeopardy according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
The Warriors discovered that Payton has a core muscle injury that could sideline him for up to three months. The Warriors have until Saturday to decide whether to go through with the trade or to have it rescinded. Other players that will be impacted by their decision includes James Wiseman, Saddiq Bey and Kevin Knox.
Feb 9, 2023
Heading back to Golden State
Payton and Kevin Knox were traded from the Trail Blazers to the Warriors on Thursday for five second-round picks, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
After winning a title with the Warriors last season, Payton signed a two-year, $17.02 million deal with the Trail Blazers over the summer, which included a $9.13 million player option for 2024-25. Given how much the Warriors have struggled, the organization felt it necessary to bring back the defensive-minded guard. Over the past two seasons, Payton has averaged 6.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.0 assists in 17.5 minutes. With Stephen Curry (knee) out through the All-Star break and possibly longer, Payton could see a boosted role in the short term.
Feb 8, 2023
Now starting
Payton will start in Wednesday's game against the Warriors, Sean Highkin of RoseGardenReport.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton will step into the starting five in place of Josh Hart, who is headed to New York and will be unavailable Wednesday. It will be his first start of the 2022-23 season.
Feb 6, 2023
Available Monday
Payton (illness) is available for Monday's contest against Milwaukee.
ANALYSIS
Despite dealing with an illness, Payton will officially make his second straight appearance for the Trail Blazers. The Oregon State product is averaging 4.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.0 assists across 17.0 minutes over his past five appearances.
Feb 5, 2023
Probable Monday
Payton (illness) is probable for Monday's game against the Bucks.
ANALYSIS
Payton missed Friday's game against Washington due to his illness but was able to suit up Saturday against the Bulls after being listed as probable. He tallied two points (1-2 FG, 0-1 3Pt), a rebound and a steal in 13 minutes during Saturday's loss to Chicago.
Feb 4, 2023
Will play Saturday
Payton (illness) is available for Saturday's game against the Bulls,
ANALYSIS
Payton has been upgraded to available and will hold his regular role off the bench for Portland. He's returning from a one-game absence, as he didn't feature against the Wizards on Friday, and he's averaging 3.9 points with 3.0 rebounds per game across his last 10 outings off the bench.
Feb 4, 2023
Likely to play
Payton (illness) is probable for Saturday's game against the Bulls.
ANALYSIS
Payton missed Friday's tilt with a non-COVID illness but is expected to return to the hardwood Saturday. His availability would likely spell fewer minutes for Shaedon Sharpe.
Feb 3, 2023
Downgraded to out
Payton (illness) has been downgraded to out for Friday's matchup against the Wizards.
ANALYSIS
Payton is under the weather and will miss at least one contest. Given Friday's matchup is the first half of a back-to-back set, it's certainly possible the defensive-minded guard is sidelined Saturday as well. Shaedon Sharpe is a candidate for increased run while Payton is out.
Feb 3, 2023
Questionable Friday
Payton is questionable for Friday's game against the Wizards due to a non-COVID illness.
ANALYSIS
Payton has appeared in the last six matchups, but he was a late addition to Friday's injury report due to his illness. Shaedon Sharpe is a candidate to see increased run against Washington if Payton is unavailable.
Jan 31, 2023
Quiet again in win over Hawks
Payton closed with four points (2-3 FG), three rebounds, one assist and one steal over 14 minutes during Monday's 129-125 victory over the Hawks.
ANALYSIS
After missing the first two-and-a-half months of the season while working back from injury, Payton has now appeared in 10 of the Blazers' last 11 contests. As was the case during Payton's days with the Warriors, he's a more effective real-life player than fantasy asset, and that's especially true when he's averaging just 16.0 minutes per game. Right now, Payton can be safely ignored in most leagues, though managers in deeper formats could look his way for some steals production (1.1 SPG).
Jan 22, 2023
Available Sunday

ANALYSIS

Jan 19, 2023
Officially out
Payton (hip) will not play in Thursday's game against Philadelphia.
ANALYSIS
Payton's absence was to be expected after being downgraded to doubtful just an hour before tipoff after being probable on the initial report. Shaedon Sharpe and Keon Johnson should be the primary beneficiaries of his absence. Payton's next chance to play will come Sunday against the Lakers.
Jan 19, 2023
Downgraded to doubtful
Payton (hip) has been downgraded to doubtful for Thursday's game against the 76ers.
ANALYSIS
Payton was initially tabbed probable for the contest, so his status change is certainly not encouraging. If he ends up being ruled out, Keon Johnson and Shaedon Sharpe could see an uptick in minutes.
Jan 18, 2023
Likely to play Thursday
Payton (hip) is probable for Thursday's game against the 76ers.
ANALYSIS
Payton will now have received a probable tag in five consecutive contests due to right adductor soreness but has managed to play in each of the four previous games and should be expected to do the same Thursday. In his last three contests, Payton has averaged 5.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists across 16.3 minutes.

Jan 15, 2023
Listed as probable
Payton is probable for Sunday's matchup against Dallas due to right adductor soreness.
ANALYSIS
Payton appears to have cleared the ankle issue that caused him to be a regular on the injury report, as he's now being listed with a hip issue. However, neither injury appears to be all that significant, as the defensive-minded forward is likely to suit up for a fourth straight game. Over his previous three games, he's averaged 4.0 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.3 assists in 17.0 minutes per game.
Jan 14, 2023

Likely to play Thursday
Payton is probable for Thursday's game versus the Cavaliers due to a right ankle sprain.
ANALYSIS

Jan 11, 2023
Logs 15 minutes in return Tuesday
Payton racked up two points (1-1 FG), two rebounds, one assist and one steal in 15 minutes during Tuesday's 109-106 loss to the Magic.
ANALYSIS
Payton returned after a three-game absence, logging 15 minutes in the loss. While he was far from impressive, he did manage one steal, something he will need to do more of should he hope to crack the standard league discussion. His role is unlikely to garner significant minutes, meaning managers should view him as a potential steals streamer only, although not just yet.
Jan 10, 2023
Good to go Tuesday
Coach Chauncey Billups said Payton (ankle) will play Tuesday against the Magic, Aaron J. Fentress of The Oregonian reports.
ANALYSIS
Patyon was probable after he missed the past three games with ankle discomfort, and he'll return to action versus Orlando. Expected to play Sunday
Payton (ankle) is probable for Sunday's game versus the Raptors.

ANALYSIS
Finally cleared to make his season and Trail Blazers debut after missing the team's first 35 games while working back from offseason core-muscle surgery, Payton saw only limited minutes, but he made a solid two-way impact during his time on the court. Payton's role could expand in the games to come, but he still looks as though he'll be limited to a bench role while all of Damian Lillard, Anfernee Simons and Josh Hart are available.
Jan 1, 2023
Set to debut Monday
Payton (abdomen) is listed as available for Monday's game against the Pistons.
ANALYSIS
Surgery on a core muscle has kept Payton on the shelf for several months, but after a long rehab process he's finally set to make his Trail Blazers debut Monday night. ANALYSIS
Payton was ruled out until at least mid-November due to offseason core muscle surgery, but it appears like he'll remain sidelined for at least a couple more games. When the defensive-minded guard is available to make his Trail Blazers debut, he figures to operate as one of the top guards off the bench behind Damian Lillard and Anfernee Simons, but while he's sidelined, rookie first-round pick Shaedon Sharpe figures to garner that role.

Unfortunately, that date has come and gone, and it appears he's set to miss at least another couple of weeks. Payton should supply Portland with some additional backcourt depth, once cleared, after averaging 7.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals over 17.6 minutes per game in his 71 appearances with the Warriors last season.

Remains out Friday
Payton (abdomen, conditioning) is listed as out for Friday's game against Houston.
ANALYSIS
While it appears Payton has recovered from offseason core muscle surgery, the guard is still working to get back into game shape and isn't quite ready to make his 2022-23 debut. His next opportunity to make his first appearance of the season will arrive next Wednesday versus the Grizzlies.
Oct 25, 2022
Won't return Wednesday
Payton is listed as out for Wednesday's game versus the Heat due to "return to competition reconditioning".
ANALYSIS
Payton's injury listing means that he has likely recovered from the core muscle surgery that he underwent this offseason. Now, Payton has to get up to game-speed conditioning before the Trail Blazers let him return to game action. However, this is a good sign that the undrafted guard will return soon, with Friday's game versus the Rockets being the first opportunity.
Oct 13, 2022
Set to miss start of regular season
Payton (abdomen) will miss the start of the regular season.
ANALYSIS
Payton underwent offseason core muscle surgery and didn't appear in any of the Trail Blazers' preseason games. He continues to progress well in his recovery process but needs more time to return to full health. The team announced Thursday that Payton will be re-evaluated in two weeks, so he should at least be considered out for the first week of the regular season. Josh Hart, Anfernee Simons and Keon Johnson should see increased run in Payton's absence.

Remains out Tuesday
Payton (abdomen) will miss Tuesday's game versus the Warriors due to core muscle recovery, Jamie Hudson of KOIN 6 News Portlandreports
ANALYSIS
Payton has yet to make his preseason debut while still recovering from offseason core muscle surgery. His status for the regular season is uncertain, as the team's first game Oct. 19. When Payton does return, he is in line to be team's primary backup at the guard position.

Oct 4, 2022
Remains out Tuesday
Payton (abdomen) won't play Tuesday against Utah, Casey Holdahl of the Trail Blazers' official site reports.

Out for start of training camp
Payton (abdomen) will be ready for full basketball activities closer to the start of the regular season, Jamie Hudson of KOIN 6 News Portland reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton underwent core muscle surgery in July and will remain sidelined for the start of training camp. However, he isn't expected to miss too much, if any, of the regular season. The defensive-minded guard parlayed his strong play during the Warriors' championship run into a three-year, $28 million deal with Portland this offseason and figures to garner a solid role in the Trail Blazers' backcourt during the 2022-23 campaign.

Undergoes off-season surgery
The Trail Blazers announced Payton underwent a core muscle surgery in July but is presumed to be fully healthy for the start of the regular season.
ANALYSIS
Payton signed a three-year, $28 million contract with Portland in July and despite the surgery should enter the season with no restrictions in a key bench role for the team.
Jul 1, 2022
Signs deal with Portland
Payton agreed to a three-year, $28 million contract with the Trail Blazers on Friday, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After playing a key defensive role for the Warriors during their championship run last season, Payton will now presumably spend his next three seasons in Portland. The 29-year-old set career-highs all across the board last year, averaging 7.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals across 17.6 minutes per game. While fantasy expectations shouldn't be too high, Payton is in a great spot to build off his personal-best year next season with the Trail Blazers.

Breaks through with big Game 5
Payton contributed 15 points (6-8 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 2-2 FT), five rebounds and three steals across 26 minutes during Monday's 104-94 win over Boston in Game 5 of the NBA Finals.
ANALYSIS
Payton was the leading scorer off the bench for the Warriors, and he was very efficient with a 6-for-8 effort from the field. The sixth-year guard tied his playoff career high with 15 points, which he initially set against Denver in Game 5 of the opening round this year. Payton was also a difference-maker on defense, helping to contain the perimeter while racking up a team-high three steals.

Good to go for Game 3
Payton (elbow) is available for Wednesday's Game 3 of the NBA Finals against the Celtics, Tomer Azarly of ClutchPoints.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton will play in Game 3 after chipping in seven points, three rebounds and three assists across 25 minutes during Sunday's Game 2 win. With Andre Iguodala (knee) and Otto Porter (foot) also cleared for Game 3, the Warriors will have all of their reserves available as they look to take a 2-1 series lead in Boston on Wednesday.

Lands on injury report again
Payton (elbow) is questionable for Game 3 of the NBA Finals against the Celtics on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Payton was technically available for Game 1 but didn't see the floor as coach Steve Kerr opted to roll with Andre Iguodala (knee) and Otto Porter (foot) for longer stretches off the bench. However, the defensive-minded guard cracked the rotation in Game 2 and totaled seven points (3-3 FG, 1-1 3Pt, 0-2 FT), three rebounds and three assists in 25 minutes.
Jun 5, 2022
Likely to see minutes in Game 2
Payton (elbow) is expected to return to the rotation for Sunday's Game 2 of the NBA Finals against Boston, Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton was technically available for Game 1 but did not see the floor as coach Steve Kerr opted to roll with Andre Iguodala (knee) and Otto Porter for longer stretches off the bench. It remains unclear just how close to 100 percent Payton may be, but with Iguodala sidelined for Game 2, Kerr told the media pregame that he "anticipates" having Payton back in the rotation.
Jun 4, 2022
Could see time in Game 2
Payton (elbow) could see playing time in Sunday's Game 2 against the Celtics, Kendra Andrews of ESPN.com reports. The guard was cleared for Game 1 but didn't see the floor.
ANALYSIS
Coach Steve Kerr intimated that Payton was only going to play in "special circumstances" during Game 1, as his elbow needed a little more time to heal. If the defensive specialist sees action in Game 2, it could come at the expense of minutes for Jordan Poole, Andre Iguodala and possibly Kevon Looney or Otto Porter.
Jun 2, 2022
Cleared to play in Game 1
Payton (elbow) has been cleared to play in Thursday's Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the Celtics, Tim Bontemps of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The Warriors were hesitant to be too optimistic about Payton's status, but throughout the week it became clear that he was moving in the right direction after missing several weeks with an elbow injury. After putting in full practices Tuesday and Wednesday, Payton will be be back to availability for the first time since Game 2 against the Grizzlies back on May 3. The Oregon State product could be eased back into action, but he figures to play a key role defensively for the Warriors throughout the series.
Jun 2, 2022
Should suit up for Game 1
Payton (elbow) is likely to be available for Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the Celtics on Thursday, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton was expected to be sidelined 3-to-5 weeks after fracturing his left elbow against the Grizzlies in early May, and he should be available within that initial timeline. According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, the defensive-minded guard may not immediately return to his usual role in the rotation after being out for a month, but he should be more involved as the series unfolds.
Jun 1, 2022
Listed questionable for Game 1
Payton (elbow) is questionable for Thursday's Game 1 of the NBA Finals against Boston, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton continues to trend in the right direction with Game 1 approaching, as he was able to go through full practices both Tuesday and Wednesday. The latter session included full-contact scrimmages, so barring a setback with his left elbow injury, Payton should have a good chance to return to action for the first time since Game 2 against Memphis.
May 31, 2022
Could play in Game 1 of Finals
Payton (elbow) is trending toward being listed as a game-time call for Thursday's Game 1 of the NBA Finals against Boston, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton hasn't played since suffering an elbow injury during Game 2 of the Warriors' second-round series against Memphis, but he's made significant progress in recent days and continues to trend in the right direction. The defensive-minded guard's status could be determined by whether he's able to log full practices Tuesday and/or Wednesday. Charania also notes the possibility of the Warriors holding Payton out of Game 1 in order to give him two more rest days before Game 2 on Sunday night. Either way, it looks as though we'll see Payton back in action at some point early in the series.
May 30, 2022
Remains limited at practice
Warriors head coach said Payton (elbow) participated in Monday's practice, but the guard didn't scrimmage, Kendra Andrews of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton has been sidelined since breaking his elbow during the Warriors' second-round series against the Grizzlies. However, there's been optimism the defensive-minded guard would return if Golden State advanced to the Finals. While Payton's status for Thursday's Game 1 remains to be determined, he appears to be trending in the right direction. Across six playoff appearances, he's averaged 7.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.8 combined steals-plus-blocks in 18.0 minutes. If Payton is able to return, he'd certainly play a role in trying to slow down Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.
May 27, 2022
Expected to return in Finals
Payton (elbow) is expected to return during the NBA Finals and could be ready for Game 1, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton suffered a broken elbow during a nasty fall during Game 3 of the Round 2 series against the Grizzlies. Even if he isn't quite ready for Game 1 of the Finals, the Warriors appear confident that he'll return at some point. During Payton's six playoff appearances, he averaged 7.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.8 combined steals-plus-blocks in 18.0 minutes, and the athletic guard was a huge part of Golden State's defensive attack. His return could mean fewer minutes for Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody.
May 20, 2022
Re-evaluated in one week
Payton (elbow) is expected to be sidelined at least one more week before he gets re-evaluated, C.J. Holmes of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton has been sidelined since fracturing his left elbow on May 3, which has resulted in five games missed. He is reportedly making good progress in his recovery process and has begun to do light individual on-court activities. However, a return for the Western Conference Finals does not look likely at this point.
May 15, 2022
'Long shot' to return during WCF
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said Sunday that Payton (elbow) is a "long shot" to play during the Western Conference Finals, Kendra Andrews of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton fractured his left elbow during the Warriors' Game 2 loss to the Grizzlies and was expected to miss 3-to-5 weeks. If the defensive-minded guard returns, it'll likely be towards the backend of the series, which suggests Payton could possibly play in the NBA Final if the Warriors advance.
May 4, 2022
Out three to five weeks
Payton (elbow) is expected to be sidelined for three to five weeks due to the fractured left elbow he suffered in Game 2 against Memphis, Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Results from Wednesday's MRI revealed that Payton also suffered slight ligament damage along with the fractured elbow, so he'll miss the next three weeks at a minimum as the Warriors continue their pursuit of another NBA title. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, there is still a chance Payton could return this postseason if the Warriors were to reach the NBA Finals, but it sounds like they'll have to get there without him. In the meantime, Damion Lee, Jonathan Kuminga and Otto Porter could see additional opportunities as the Warriors try to get past the Grizzlies in the Western Conference semifinals.
May 4, 2022
Fractures elbow
Payton has been diagnosed with a fractured left elbow, Connor Letourneau of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. An MRI on Wednesday will help determine how long he will be out.
ANALYSIS
This is a tough blow for the Warriors, as Payton was starting to see an uptick in minutes and appeared locked in as a starter for the remainder of the postseason. Prior to Tuesday's first-quarter exit, he had recorded at least one steal in five straight games -- three of which included at least one block. More information on his recovery time will be revealed when he gets an MRI, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him ruled out for the rest of the playoffs. For the duration of his absence, more minutes could be in store for Damion Lee, Jonathan Kuminga and Otto Porter.
May 3, 2022
Will not return to Game 2
Payton (elbow) will not return to Tuesday's Game 2 against the Grizzlies.
ANALYSIS
Payton underwent X-rays following a hard fall where he tried to brace himself using his left arm. The results of those X-rays have not been revealed, but the guard will not return to Tuesday's game.
May 3, 2022
Heads to locker room
Payton went to the locker room during the first quarter of Tuesday's Game 2 against the Grizzlies, C.J. Holmes of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton was going up for a fast-break layup when he was hit in the head by Dillon Brooks mid-air, resulting in the Warriors' guard crashing to the ground and injuring his arm while trying to break his fall. He appeared to be in significant pain, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him sit out the remainder of the game.
May 1, 2022
Retreats to bench for second half
Payton will operate off the bench during the second half of Sunday's Game 1 against the Grizzlies, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton drew his first start of the season. However, with Draymond Green ejected at the end of the first half, the Warriors have changed their gameplan and have opted to start Poole and Kevon Looney over Payton and Green to begin the second half.
May 1, 2022
Starting Game 1
Payton will start Sunday's Game 1 against the Grizzlies, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Warriors decided to start both Stephen Curry and Jordan Poole during their Game 5 win over the Nuggets, but Golden State will adjust its starting unit for a second straight game, this time opting for more defense by inserting Payton. Across 16 starts this season, Payton averaged 9.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.8 steals in 23.4 minutes per game. While Payton will start, Poole is still expected to garner a sizable role off the bench.
Apr 28, 2022
Scores 15 points off bench
Payton notched 15 points (6-8 FG, 3-4 3Pt), three rebounds, three assists, one block and two steals in 26 minutes during Wednesday's 102-98 win over the Nuggets.
ANALYSIS
Payton's 15 points tied Klay Thompson for second on the team behind Stephen Curry (30 points) and were the most Payton registered in the five-game series. The sixth-year guard also chipped in three boards, three dimes and two steals while playing turnover-free ball across 26 minutes. Payton's minutes fluctuated throughout the series, and that could again be the case in the Conference Semifinals against either Memphis or Minnesota.
Apr 24, 2022
Sees only seven minutes in Game 4
Payton finished with zero points (0-1 FG, 0-1 3Pt) and one steal over seven minutes during Sunday's 126-121 loss to Denver.
ANALYSIS
While Payton typically isn't an overly strong fantasy option, he usually plays a larger role for coach Steve Kerr off the bench. Prior to Sunday, Payton had played at least 14 minutes in 13 straight contests. Kerr instead opted to roll with Jordan Poole (39 minutes) and Andrew Wiggins (37) for longer stretches, while Andre Iguodala (13) and Jonathan Kuminga (11), who was a DNP-CD in Game 3, also factored into the mix.
Apr 3, 2022
Starting for Klay
Payton will start Sunday's game against the Kings, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
With Klay Thompson resting, Payton will move into the lineup at one guard spot as the Warriors finish out a back-to-back set. Payton was instrumental in Saturday night's come-from-behind win over Utah, finishing with 10 points, five assists, three rebounds, one steal and one block in 22 minutes.
Mar 30, 2022
Shifts back to bench
Payton will come off the bench for Wednesday's game against the Suns.
ANALYSIS
With Klay Thompson back in the lineup after getting a rest day on Monday, Payton will shift to the bench after logging two points, three rebounds and a block in 14 minutes of action as a starter against Memphis. The 28-year-old is averaging 7.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 17.2 minutes per game this season.
Mar 28, 2022
In starting five
Payton (knee) will be available for Monday's game at Memphis. He'll start at shooting guard.
ANALYSIS
With the Warriors once again resting several regulars, Payton will move into the lineup at one guard spot alongside Jordan Poole. The defensive ace saw 21 minutes of action off the bench in Sunday's loss to Washington, which he finished with five points, two rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal.
Mar 28, 2022
Added to injury report
Payton (knee) is listed as questionable for Monday's game at Memphis, Kendra Andrews of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton is a late addition to the injury report, so he could end up being close to a true game-time call. He missed time earlier in the month with a knee issue, but that was his left knee, so this appears to be a separate concern. Payton finished Sunday's loss to the Wizards with five points, two rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block in 21 minutes.
Mar 25, 2022
Logs 30 minutes off bench
Payton chipped in 14 points (6-7 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 2-2 FT), six rebounds, two assists and two steals in 30 minutes during Friday's 121-110 loss to the Hawks.
ANALYSIS
Payton came off the bench again Friday but logged at least 27 minutes for the second consecutive game. With Steph Curry out for the foreseeable future, Payton has a nice opportunity to finish the regular season strongly. If his playing time sticks in this range, he is certainly worth a look in standard leagues, especially for anyone in need of steals.
Mar 21, 2022
Absent from injury report
Payton (knee) isn't listed on the injury report ahead of Tuesday's game against Orlando.
ANALYSIS
Payton hasn't taken the court since March 3 due to a knee issue, but he appears in line for a return Tuesday. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the Warriors monitor his minutes closely following an eight-game absence.
Mar 19, 2022
Ruled out Sunday
Payton (knee) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Spurs, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton was reportedly targeting Sunday's matchup as a potential return date, but he'll be sidelined for an eighth consecutive game as he continues to deal with a left knee injury. His next chance to suit up will be Tuesday against Orlando, while he could see a slightly increased role once he's back in action since Stephen Curry (foot) is expected to miss at least two weeks.
Mar 18, 2022
Questionable for Sunday's contest
Payton (knee) is questionable for Sunday's contest against the Spurs, C.J. Holmes of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton hasn't played since March 3 due to a left knee issue, but previous reports suggested he was targeting Sunday as a potential return date. With Stephen Curry (foot) expected to be sidelined for at least two weeks, Payton could garner an increased role when he does eventually make his return, though he likely won't do much offensively to compensate for the loss of the former MVP.
Mar 17, 2022
Expecting to return Sunday
Payton (knee) is targeting Sunday's game against the Spurs to return from his seven-game absence, Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton hasn't played since March 3 due to a left knee issue, but he's made progress in recent days and is on track to return Sunday. Payton won't do much offensively to compensate for the loss of Stephen Curry (foot), but the former Oregon State standout is one of the best defensive guards in the NBA.
Mar 12, 2022
Without timetable for return
Payton (knee) still hasn't returned to the court and remains without a timetable for a return, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Fantasy managers shouldn't expect Payton back in the near future since he hasn't yet stepped back on the court. Andre Iguodala (back) also remains out indefinitely.
Mar 12, 2022
Out vs. Bucks
Payton (knee) is out for Saturday's game against the Bucks.
ANALYSIS
Left knee soreness will force Payton to sit out a fifth straight matchup. His next chance to play arrives Monday against the Wizards.
Mar 9, 2022
Out Thursday
Payton (knee) won't play Thursday against the Nuggets, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton will miss a fourth consecutive game as he continues to deal with left knee soreness. As a result, Jordan Poole, Moses Moody and Damion Lee could see increased run. Payton's next chance to return will be Saturday against the Bucks.
Mar 8, 2022
Won't play Tuesday
Payton (knee) has been ruled out for Tuesday's contest against the Clippers.
ANALYSIS
Payton is slated to miss his third straight game due left knee soreness. In his absence, Jordan Poole and Damion Lee are candidates for increased roles.
Mar 6, 2022
Ruled out Monday
Payton (knee) is listed as out for Monday's game at Denver.
ANALYSIS
Payton also missed Saturday's game against the Lakers, and he likely won't travel with the team for Monday's contest, which falls on the front end of a road/home back-to-back. The Warriors will also hold out Stephen Curry (hand), Klay Thompson (rest) and Andrew Wiggins (foot) in what appears to be somewhat of a protest by coach Steve Kerr for the timing of Monday's contest, which is a make-up game from earlier in the season. Regardless, Payton should be considered day-to-day and questionable for Tuesday's home matchup against the Clippers.
Mar 4, 2022
Ruled out Saturday
Payton has been ruled out for Saturday's game against the Lakers due to left knee soreness.
ANALYSIS
Payton started each of the last five matchups and averaged 11.0 points and 2.6 rebounds in 23.8 minutes per game during that time. Jordan Poole, Damion Lee and Moses Moody should see increased run Saturday.
Feb 27, 2022
Positive production in loss
Payton amassed 13 points (6-11 FG, 1-5 3Pt), two rebounds, three assists and three steals over 27 minutes during Sunday's 107-101 loss to the Mavericks.
ANALYSIS
Payton was one of the very few positives to come out of Sunday's game, delivering a solid two-way performance. His season has been built on his ability to rack up steals, something he was able to do yet again Sunday. The offense has been far more sporadic but with Klay Thompson sidelined, Payton took it upon himself to shoulder more of the scoring load. Based on what we have seen thus far this season, he should be viewed as a streaming specialist in competitive leagues.
Feb 24, 2022
Good to go
Payton (leg) has been cleared to play Thursday against Portland.
ANALYSIS
Payton was downgraded to questionable closer to tipoff, but the medical staff has since given him the green light to take the court. He should draw another start at shooting guard after gaining clearance.
Feb 24, 2022
Now questionable Thursday
Payton (leg) is now considered questionable for Thursday's game against the Trail Blazers, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
According to head coach Steve Kerr, Payton is feeling some discomfort in his injured shin and has been downgraded to questionable ahead of Thursday's matchup with Portland. If Payton can't go, Jordan Poole and Damion Lee could see increased run in the Warriors' backcourt.
Feb 24, 2022
Probable for Thursday
Payton is probable for Thursday's game at Portland due to left lower leg soreness.
ANALYSIS
Payton was originally absent from the injury report for Thursday, so it appears to be a fresh injury. Coach Steve Kerr said Wednesday the 29-year-old is likely to stay in the starting five for Thursday's contest, and that's should still be the case unless his status is further downgraded.
Feb 23, 2022
Will start Thursday
Payton is likely to record his second consecutive start Thursday when the Warriors face the Trail Blazers, Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said that Payton is likely to start Thursday with Otto Porter seemingly set to come off the bench again. The 29-year-old was a defensive force in his last start where he recorded 12 points, six steals and four rebounds across 25 minutes.
Feb 17, 2022
Racks up six steals Wednesday
Payton racked up 12 points (5-8 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 1-2 FT), four rebounds, one block and six steals over 25 minutes during Wednesday's 117-116 loss to the Nuggets.
ANALYSIS
Payton was given his first start since Jan. 13 and paid dividends with the big defensive effort. His six steals tied a career high and marked his third game with multiple thefts in February. Payton also tallied double-digit points for the first time since Jan. 11. He has played well as a starter this season, but it's not clear whether he'll remain in that role or revert to the bench moving forward.
Feb 16, 2022
Will start Wednesday
Payton is in the starting lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Nuggets, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is attempting to mix up lineup combinations which will lead to Payton earning his first start since Jan.13. Although most of Payton's starts have come when the Warriors were shorthanded, he has been much more effective when in the starting lineup. The 29-year-old has averaged 11.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists across 24.7 minutes when starting compared to just 5.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 0.7 assists across 14.8 minutes when coming off the bench.
Feb 15, 2022
Minimal impact Monday
Payton recorded one point (1-2 FT) and one steal over 11 minutes during Monday's 119-104 loss to the Clippers.
ANALYSIS
Payton continues to see limited playing time for the Warriors, as he has exceeded 20 minutes just once in his past seven games. The reduced role is both a reason for and a product of the point guard's near-invisibility on offense, as Payton has tallied a meager one point over his past four games combined. He was a hot fantasy pickup at one point early this season, but those days are long gone.
Feb 2, 2022
Available Thursday
Payton (leg) is available for Thursday's tilt against the Kings.
ANALYSIS
Payton injured his leg late during Tuesday's win over the Spurs, but it won't stop him from playing Thursday. Over his past nine appearances, he's averaged 5.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.1 assists in 17.2 minutes.
Feb 2, 2022
Steal maven in win
Payton provided zero points (0-1 FG), five steals, three rebounds, three assists and one block in 17 minutes Tuesday in the Warriors' 124-120 win over the Spurs.
ANALYSIS
Though he didn't benefit from a usage or playing time standpoint with the Warriors holding out eight players Tuesday due to rest or injury, Payton cranked up the intensity on the defensive end and established a new career-high steal total. According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, Payton was spotted limping to the locker room after appearing to injure his left leg on his final steal of the night, so his availability for Thursday's game against the Kings is uncertain at the moment. If he suits up, Payton will likely fill a 15-to-20-minute role on the second unit with all of Stephen Curry (toe), Klay Thompson (rest) and Andrew Wiggins (knee) likely to return to the lineup.
Jan 19, 2022
Light minutes in first game back
Payton (back) played 14 minutes off the bench in Tuesday's 102-86 win over the Pistons, finishing with five points (2-7 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 1-2 FT), four rebounds and one assist.
ANALYSIS
Tuesday's game marked one of the few times all season in which the Warriors had all of Payton, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Jordan Poole available. Unsurprisingly, Payton -- who was returning from a two-game absence -- finished fourth among those guards in minutes, and he only marginally inched out Damion Lee (12 minutes) for playing time. Thompson will likely sit out one half of back-to-back sits moving forward, but he should gradually ramp up his playing time, which will leave less opportunities available for Payton. Unless the Warriors lose one of their other key guards to a long-term injury, Payton will represent little more than a streaming option for steals, rebounds and field-goal percentage rather than a must-roster player in 12-team leagues.

Ruled out Sunday
Payton (back) has been ruled out for Sunday's contest against the Timberwolves, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton will miss his second straight game with back soreness. With Payton and Stephen Curry (hand) both out, Jordan Poole will draw the start while Chris Chiozza and Damion Lee are likely candidates for increased minutes off the bench.
Jan 15, 2022
Questionable Sunday
Payton (back) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Timberwolves.
ANALYSIS
If available, Payton could see increased usage since Stephen Curry (hand) has been ruled out. If Payton is out as well, Jordan Poole and Chris Chiozza should see action at point guard.
Jan 13, 2022
Out Friday
Payton (back) will not play Friday against the Bulls, Connor Letourneau of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton exited Thursday's game early due to tightness in his lower back and just after the conclusion of that game, he was declared out for Friday's matchup with the Bulls. Jordan Poole and Damion Lee will see extended run in his absence. The 29-year-old's next chance to play will come on Sunday against the Timberwolves.
Jan 13, 2022
Will not return Thursday
Payton (back) will not return to Thursday's contest with the Bucks.
ANALYSIS
Payton is dealing with tightness in his lower back and will sit for the remainder of Thursday's game. Jordan Poole and Damion Lee figure to handle backup guard duties in his absence. With a quick turnaround coming, Payton should be considered questionable at best for tomorrow's contest against the Bulls.
Jan 13, 2022
Starting Thursday
Payton is starting Thursday's game against the Bucks, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton came off the bench in each of the last two games but will return to the starting five Thursday as the Warriors use a small lineup in the absence of Draymond Green (calf). The 29-year-old has averaged 10.5 points and 5.3 rebounds in 23.0 minutes per game across six appearances since the start of the calendar year.
Jan 11, 2022
Available Tuesday
Payton (ankle) is available for Tuesday's matchup against the Grizzlies, Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Jan 11, 2022
Upgraded to probable

Jan 10, 2022
Questionable Tuesday
Payton (ankle) is questionable to play Tuesday against the Grizzlies, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton is in jeopardy of missing Tuesday's game due to a left ankle sprain. The 29-year-old has missed just one game all season and has been especially important to the Warriors the past few weeks when he went on a streak of eight straight games where he scored in double figures. If Payton is unable to take the court Tuesday, Damion Lee and Jordan Poole will see more opportunities.
Jan 5, 2022
Records double-double Wednesday
Payton contributed 11 points (5-5 FG, 1-1 3Pt), 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals across 24 minutes during Wednesday's 99-82 loss to the Mavericks.
ANALYSIS
Payton was just one of three Warriors to reach double figures offensively, as the guard also grabbed a team high off the glass to mark his first double-double of the season. The former Oregon State standout has fared well since entering the starting lineup Dec. 23 against Memphis. He's averaging 14.0 points and and 6.7 rebounds during that span.
Dec 24, 2021
Scores season-high 22 points
Payton recorded 22 points (9-16 FG, 4-7 3Pt, 0-2 FT), two rebounds, one assist and one block over 33 minutes during Thursday's 113-104 victory over the Grizzlies.
ANALYSIS
Payton got the start while both Jordan Poole and Damion Lee were out due to protocols, and he scored a season-high 22 points. However, his production has decreased significantly overall since his hot start, especially in the steals department. When the Warriors are healthy, he's a fringe streaming option in deep leagues, even on four-game weeks.
Dec 4, 2021
Goes missing in Saturday's loss
Payton produced four points (2-3 FG), one rebound, one assist and one steal across 13 minutes during Saturday's 112-107 loss to San Antonio.
ANALYSIS
Coming off a strong performance Friday, Payton followed up by delivering one of his worst games of the season. He has been a fantastic addition for the Warriors thus far, bringing a ton of energy off the bench, driven by his tenacity on the defensive end. The playing time is not enough for him to have 12-team value, leaving him as more of a streaming option only.
Nov 23, 2021
Active Wednesday
Payton (abdomen) is available to play Wednesday against Philadelphia.
ANALYSIS
Payton is off the injury report ahead of Wednesday's matchup, so the guard will be available off the bench for coach Steve Kerr. The Oregon State product is currently averaging 6.4 points and 3.2 rebounds across 16 outings.
Nov 23, 2021
Questionable for Wednesday
Payton (abdomen) is questionable for Wednesday's contest against the 76ers, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton was probable for Sunday's contest against the Raptors, but he was eventually ruled out. If he is unable to suit up Wednesday, then Chris Chiozza and Damion Lee are candidates to see increased minutes.
Nov 21, 2021
Out Sunday
Payton (abdomen) is out for Sunday's contest against Toronto, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After starting the day probably, the improved guard out of Oregon State eventually was ruled out for the Warriors. Payton's absence likely means more opportunities for the likes of Jordan Poole, Damion Lee and Moses Moody. The 28-year-old's next chance to return to the court comes Wednesday against the 76ers.
Nov 21, 2021
Downgraded to questionable
Payton (abdomen) is questionable against the Raptors on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Payton's availability status was probable Saturday. He will have a few hours to recover, but the downgrade is not promising.
Nov 20, 2021
Probable vs. Raptors
Payton is probable Sunday against the Raptors due to hernia injury recovery.
ANALYSIS
Payton got the start for the injured Stephen Curry on Friday and posted 12 points, three rebounds, two steals and one block in 29 minutes. Curry is available Sunday, so Payton should return to his usual bench role despite dealing with a hernia.
Nov 19, 2021
Starting for injured Curry
Payton will start Friday against the Pistons, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
With Stephen Curry (hip) sidelined, Payton will make his first start of the season and the 24th start of his career. Per 36 minutes this season, the 28-year-old is averaging 16.7 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 3.7 steals.
Nov 16, 2021
Good to go Tuesday
Payton (knee) will be available for Tuesday's game against Brooklyn, Kendra Andrews of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton was considered probable due to minor knee issue, but he's now been officially cleared from the injury report. Coach Steve Kerr named Payton as one of the players who will be used as an individual defender against Kevin Durant.
Nov 15, 2021
Dealing with knee contusion
Payton is probable for Tuesday's contest against the Nets with a right knee contusion.
ANALYSIS
Payton landed on the injury report Monday with a right knee contusion, but he will likely be available for Tuesday's contest against the Nets. The 6-foot-3 guard has carved out a solid rotational role for Golden State, averaging 6.1 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.4 steals across 12.7 minutes per game.
Nov 13, 2021
Continues great defense
Payton recorded eight points (3-6 FG, 0-3 3Pt, 2-2 FT), five rebounds and three steals across 21 minutes during a 119-93 win Friday versus Chicago.
ANALYSIS
Payton possesses an average of 2.3 steals this month. Among seven players who have that achievement at minimum, he remains the only one averaging fewer than 20.0 minutes (18.7 exactly) across multiple games. Payton's impressive steal rate should entice some fantasy team managers to add him if they value defense and need a low-cost option.
Nov 6, 2021
Pops for 17 points Friday
Payton closed with 17 points (7-10 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 2-2 FT), six rebounds, three assists and one steal in 18 minutes during Friday's 126-85 victory over the Pelicans.
ANALYSIS
Normally known for his defensive stopping power, Payton flashed some offensive upside as the Warriors easily accounted for a woeful Pelicans outfit. While this is certainly not what we should expect to see on a nightly basis, Payton has been able to at least carve out a reasonably consistent role off the bench. Those in deeper formats should at least glance in his direction, given his defensive upside.
Nov 4, 2021
Questionable to return Wednesday
Payton (ankle) is questionable to return to Wednesday's game against the Hornets.
ANALYSIS
Payton sprained his ankle in the second half of Wednesday's contest and is questionable to return. If he is unable to return, he will have another chance to take the court Friday against the Pelicans.
Oct 19, 2021
Back with Golden State
Payton rejoined the Warriors on Tuesday on a new contract.
ANALYSIS
The defensive-minded guard played for the Warriors during the preseason but was cut loose Saturday ahead of the league's roster trim-down deadline. The terms of the new contract have not been released, but the Warriors' two-way slots are filled, so it's likely that Payton returns on a partially or non-guaranteed deal to fill the 15th roster spot.
Oct 16, 2021
Parts ways with Warriors
Payton was waived by the Warriors on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Payton appeared in just one preseason game and recorded 12 points, one rebound, one steal and one block in 11 minutes. He could wind up in the G League if he goes unclaimed on waivers.
Oct 9, 2021
Available Tuesday
Payton (groin) will be available for Tuesday's preseason game against the Lakers, Nick Friedell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After sitting out three preseason games because of offseason hernia surgery, Payton will return and attempt to enter the Warriors' 15-man roster before opening night on Oct. 19.
Oct 3, 2021
Recovering from hernia procedure
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said Payton won't be available for Monday's preseason opener against the Trail Blazers while he continues to recover from an offseason hernia procedure, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Kerr suggested that Payton would be limited for the start of training camp and likely miss additional preseason contests beyond Monday, which could hurt the sixth-year guard's chances of making the Warriors' 15-man opening night roster. After joining the Warriors last April, Payton appeared in 10 games and averaged 2.5 points and 1.1 rebounds in 4.0 minutes per contest.
May 16, 2021
Available vs. Grizzlies
Payton (recently signed) will be available for Sunday's matchup against the Grizzlies, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton is a defensive specialist who could come in handy if someone in the Grizzlies' backcourt catches fire, especially Ja Morant. However, it's unlikely he plays big minutes.
May 16, 2021
Signed by Warriors
Payton signed with the Warriors on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Payton's signing with Golden State had been expected, but it became official Sunday. The guard previously had two 10-day contracts with the Warriors this season, appearing in a total of 10 games. The terms of the deal were not released.
May 13, 2021
Expected to sign with Warriors
Payton is expected to sign a contract with the Warriors this weekend, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton was previously on two 10-day contracts with the Warriors. In 16 total minutes, he racked up 11 points, four assists, three steals, two rebounds and one block. He's not expected to be a significant part of the rotation if he does indeed sign.
Apr 29, 2021
Second 10-day expires
Payton's second 10-day contract expired Thursday and the Warriors have "no immediate plans to sign him," Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton appeared in six games for the Warriors. In 16 total minutes, he racked up 11 points, four assists, three steals, two rebounds and one block. Coach Steve Kerr said the front office is "exploring options" regarding a possible signing of Payton later in the season, but that's a decision that hasn't been made.
Apr 18, 2021
To sign second 10-day deal
The Warriors plan to sign Payton to a second 10-day contract, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS

Apr 8, 2021
Signing 10-day with Warriors
Payton will sign a 10-day contract with the Warriors, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports. He will be available for Friday's game against the Wizards, per Anthony Slater of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Payton saw his biggest chance in the NBA last season with the Wizards. He appeared in 29 games and averaged 3.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.1 steals in 14.9 minutes. He's a defensive specialist, and the Warriors are likely interested in what he can bring to a bench that has bouts of inconsistency on both ends of the floor.
Jul 9, 2020
Tests positive, not in Orlando
Payton tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday and did not travel with the Wizards to Orlando, Ava Wallace of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton appeared in 29 games with the Wizards before the suspension of the season, averaging 14.9 minutes, 3.9 points and 2.8 rebounds. He will now be required to self-quarantine for 14 days and produce two negative tests before entering the bubble.
Mar 11, 2020
Recalled from G League
Payton was recalled from the G League on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Payton's playing time has been inconsistent as of late at the NBA level. Over the Wizards' past 13 games, he's played in just eight, averaging 1.5 points in 3.5 minutes.
Feb 9, 2020
Back with parent club
Payton was recalled from the G League on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Payton didn't see the court Friday against the Mavericks after being moved out of the starting lineup and was subsequently assigned to the Capital City Go-Go, where he put up 16 points, 11 rebounds and five assists in Saturday's game against the Erie Bayhawks. The 27-year-old is averaging 4.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.5 steals in 19.8 minutes in 21 NBA games this season.
Feb 7, 2020
Coming off bench Friday
Payton will come off the bench Friday against the Mavericks, Candace Buckner of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
After three consecutive starts, Payton will head to the bench while Isaac Bonga gets the nod. In four appearances off the pine this season, Payton is averaging 6.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.0 steals in 24.3 minutes.
Jan 30, 2020
Starting Thursday
Payton will start Thursday's matchup against the Hornets, Candace Buckner of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Scott Brooks will opt to put Payton and Isaac Bonga in the starting five, pushing Thomas Bryant to the bench. In 14 starts this season, Payton is averaging 5.1 points, 3.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.5 steals in 18.5 minutes.
Jan 28, 2020
Coming off bench Tuesday
Payton will come off the bench Tuesday against the Bucks.
ANALYSIS
Coach Scott Brooks will opt to put Isaac Bonga in the starting five, sending Payton to the bench. In three previous appearances off the pine this season, he's averaged 8.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.7 steals and 1.0 block in 28.7 minutes.
Jan 20, 2020
Back amongst starters

Jan 17, 2020
Headed for bench
Payton is set to come off the bench Friday against Toronto, Candace Buckner of The Washington Post reports.

Payton has started the last 10 games for the Wizards, but the team will switch things up Friday night, giving Isaac Bonga an opportunity to rejoin the lineup. Payton has scored 10 points in two contests off the bench this season.
Jan 16, 2020
Limited production
Payton II had 10 points (3-4 FG, 2-3 3PT, 2-2 FT), two rebounds, two assists and one block in 18 minutes during Wednesday's 115-106 win over the Wizards.
ANALYSIS
Payton II is yet to top the 15-point mark this season since signing with Washington in late December, but he has scored in double digits in two of his last three outings. He has shown an ability to fill the stat sheet thus far, but his limited production as a starter -- 5.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 20.1 minutes per game -- prevents him from having a lot of upside moving forward.
Jan 12, 2020
Remains in starting five
Updating a previous report, Payton will remain in the starting five for Sunday's game against the Jazz.
ANALYSIS
Bradley Beal's return from a five-game absence was initially expected to push Payton into a bench role, but Jordan McRae will instead be moved to the second unit. Payton's fantasy outlook should nonetheless take a hit with Beal back in the fold, as there will now be fewer minutes to go around for all of the Wizards' wing options.
Jan 12, 2020
Shifts to bench
Payton will move to the bench for Sunday's game against the Jazz, Fred Katz of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Though star guard Bradley Beal (lower leg) will have a minutes restriction in his return to action after missing seven of the Wizards' past eight games, he'll reclaim his usual spot in the starting five, pushing Payton to the bench as a result. Due to the injuries to Beal and a slew of other key contributors, Payton had started each of the previous eight games, averaging 5.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.9 steals in 21.3 minutes. Payton should see his minutes drop off steadily moving forward with Beal, Thomas Bryant (foot) and Davis Bertans (quadriceps) all back in action following multi-week absences.
