Blake Horvath Injury News & Updates

Horvath is out "a while" due to a thumb injury, Mike James of Rivals.com reports.

Previously undisclosed, Horvath's thumb injury is expected to render him out indefinitely, considering he has no return timetable just yet. Though nothing has been confirmed just yet, Tai Lavatai is expected to be Navy's starting quarterback again while his injured teammate recovers.

Horvath (undisclosed) has been ruled out for the rest of Saturday's game against North Texas, Bill Wagner of The Capital Gazette reports.

Horvath was declared out of the game with an undisclosed injury, and further tests will be needed to see if the signal-caller will be forced to miss additional time. Tai Lavatai is expected to replace him under center, and Braxton Woodson might see time as well.

Horvath will be Navy's starting quarterback in Saturday's game versus North Texas, Bill Wagner of Capital Gazette Communications reports.

Horvath will start ahead of Tai Lavatai in Saturday's contest. Horvath has completed 6-of-10 passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns to go along with 19 rushes for 95 yards across three games this season.

Horvath completed 4 of 6 passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns during Saturday's 44-30 defeat to South Florida. He also had 10 rushes for 52 yards.

Horvath did not start Saturday's game but still split time with Tai Lavatai. Horvath out-played Lavatai, tossing two touchdown passes -- including a 68-yarder -- and out-rushing his counterpart. The two will likely continue to split time under center, but Horvath has the higher upside in the passing game and therefore will be used more when the Midshipmen are losing, which looks more likely than not to be the case most weeks.

Horvath was 0-for-1 passing and rushed seven times for 49 yards during Thursday's 28-24 defeat to Memphis. He also had two fumbles and lost one.

Horvath saw his first significant action of this season Thursday and ran the ball effectively, totaling seven yards per carry on seven attempts. However, he fumbled the ball twice, including a lost fumble, which brings him to three fumbles on just nine rushing attempts this season. That could be enough to secure the job for Tai Lavatai unless Horvath can prove he can hold onto the football.

Both Horvath and Tai Lavatai are expected to play Thursday against Memphis with Lavatai getting the start, Pete Thamel of ESPN.com reports.

Horvath was listed as a co-starter alongside Lavatai ahead of the season opener but wound up not seeing the field. The sophomore saw some brief action last week but combined for -5 net yards while fumbling the football. It's unclear how involved Horvath will be in Thursday's tilt, but it sounds like he should get some more run than he did against Wagner in Week 2.

Horvath is listed alongside Tai Lavatai as a co-starter at quarterback for the opener versus Notre Dame.

Among the names to challenge for the starting job, Horvath winding up as a co-starter comes as a bit of a surprise. He could see some snaps under center as a result, though Lavatai has much more experience to date.
