James announced Tuesday that he will enter the NCAA transfer portal, Kevin Barral of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After three seasons with the Golden Panthers, James will search for a fresh start at a new program. The 6-foot-3 signal-caller completed 58 percent of his passes for 2,336 yards, 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions during his tenure at Florida International.

James went 12-for-20 for 200 yards and a touchdown against JSU on Wednesday. He also ran for a score.
ANALYSIS
James was the starter when the season began, but after looking pretty brutal he ceded the job to freshman Keyone Jenkins. Jenkins has had his moments, but he's struggled recently, including in his brief appearance in this game. Bowl eligibility is theoretically possible for the Panthers, who need two wins in their final three games. Could they turn to the veteran under center to try and make that happen?

Won't start against Maine

ANALYSIS
James was downright awful in the season opener after throwing for four yards in 11 passing attempts, and freshman Keyone Jenkins will get the nod instead. James might be able to see some snaps under center, but he didn't help his case with his awful outing the last time out.

An all-time bad start
James went 5-for-11 for four, yes four, yards and an interception against La Tech on Saturday. He also rushed nine times for 15 yards.
ANALYSIS
Look, it's FIU, and the quarterback room isn't exactly loaded with talent. However, James was not good in 2022, and La Tech had maybe the worst defense in the FBS last season. To come out to start 2023 and throw for four yards against the Bulldogs, it would be malpractice for head coach Mike McIntyre to keep trotting James out there.

ANALYSIS
James will retain his starting job after totaling 1,962 passing yards (209-of-357), 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions with the Panthers last season. The junior quarterback was expected to open the season under center, with Keyone Jenkins as the likely backup should he struggle.

James and Keyone Jenkins have been in a QB battle for FIorida International's starting spot. With how FIU conducted its Saturday practice, the former seems to be favored for that spot. James is in a good position with the team having less than 10 days before needing to select its starting quarterback for an Aug. 26 game scheduled at Louisiana Tech.

ANALYSIS
This was the extent of the FIU passing offense in this game. Haden Carlson came in and threw five incomplete passes. James is the best of a series of bad options, and it's not good for this passing game.

ANALYSIS
James has been inconsistent at best, but this is a new nadir. He now has five turnovers over his last two games, with no passing touchdowns in that time.

ANALYSIS
James had his two best games of the season the last couple of weeks. This was a crash, to be sure, and now he has 11 passing touchdowns against eight picks.

ANALYSIS
The last two weeks, FIU have played Charlotte and La Tech, perhaps the two worst defense in the FBS. However, even given that, James handled his business, put up some fantasy numbers, and helped lead the team to victories. He's been way too inconsistent for fantasy purposes, but he's not hurting FIU's top offensive players.

ANALYSIS
Prior to this, James had three touchdowns against FBS teams, and that all came against NMSU. Honestly, this probably mostly speaks to Charlotte having the worst defense in the FBS this year.

ANALYSIS
James now has seven passing touchdowns against five interceptions, and he hasn't had more than 256 yards passing in a game. The team even let third-string quarterback Haden Carlson see some action in this game.

ANALYSIS
Well, after coming off big in a win over NMSU, James struggled against UConn, traditionally one of the worst teams in the FBS. That doesn't bode well, and James' 5.7 yards per attempt is quite low.

ANALYSIS
This is the most alive the FIU offense has looked all season. However, NMSU is one of the worst teams in the FBS, and 13 completions for 175 yards isn't exactly exciting either.

ANALYSIS
Yes, it took James 23 passes to get to 85 yards through the air. He is the quarterback FIU considered its best option, which speaks to the bleakness of this situation. Haden Carlson got some time, but he did not impress either.

Last week, James stepped in for starter Gunnar Holmberg (undisclosed) and threw four touchdowns. That was against Bryant, though. Against an FCS team, things went much worse for James.

James replaced Gunnar Holmberg (undisclosed) after the starting quarterback left the game following a big hit Thursday against Bryant. He went 16-for-31 for 207 yards and four touchdowns.
ANALYSIS
FIU was down 16-6 when James took over in the third quarter. It ended up winning 38-37 in overtime. Hopefully Holmberg heals soon, but he may have lost the starting job to James.
