David Montgomery Injury News & Updates
Keep up with the latest injuries from the Giants vs Lions game on Sunday with our National Football League injury report.Nov 17, 2025
Held to 37 total yards
Montgomery rushed the ball six times for 27 yards in Sunday's 16-9 loss to the Eagles. He added one reception on one target for 10 yards.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery was limited due to game script, as the Lions possessed the ball for only 24:12 of game time. That led to only his second performance with single-digit touches this season, and his second-lowest yardage output of the campaign. While Montgomery will continue to hold a meaningful role in the Detroit offense behind Jahmyr Gibbs, his fantasy value is primarily dependent on his finding the end zone.
Nov 9, 2025
Tallies 71 yards in win
Montgomery rushed the ball 15 times for 71 yards in Sunday's 44-22 win over the Commanders. He added one reception on one target for zero yards.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery was overshadowed by a huge performance from Jahmyr Gibbs, but he still saw an even split in carries. He also turned in a relatively efficient outing, including five rushes of at least five yards. While it was generally a positive outing for Montgomery, this marked only the fourth time he's topped 50 rushing yards this season, and he remains dependent on finding the end zone to turn in useful fantasy performances.
Nov 2, 2025
50 total yards, TD in loss
Montgomery rushed 11 times for 40 yards and a touchdown and brought in two of four targets for 10 yards in the Lions' 27-24 loss to the Vikings on Sunday. He also lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery outpaced Jahmyr Gibbs by two carries and was the only one of the two to get into the end zone, doing so via a two-yard run early in the second quarter. The veteran back also short-circuited a drive in the third quarter, however, as he lost a fumble that was recovered by the Vikings at the Lions' 34-yard line and led to a Minnesota touchdown five plays later. Montgomery and Gibbs figure to continue in their usual timeshare when the Lions face the Commanders on the road in Week 10.
Oct 20, 2025
Overshadowed by Gibbs on MNF
Montgomery was held to 21 yards on 13 carries while catching two of three targets for 18 yards in Monday's 24-9 win over the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Jahmyr Gibbs went off for 218 yards and two touchdowns on Monday Night Football, leaving scraps for Montgomery's fantasy managers in Week 7. The latter still received 15 touches, highlighting his continued involvement in Detroit's two-pronged backfield. Both talented rushers have recorded a 100-plus yard rushing game this season, with Gibbs having the edge in total yards (+269) and touchdowns (+3). Montgomery may not be as tantalizing an asset as Gibbs, but he should continue providing flex value in fantasy when the Lions resume play in Week 9.
Oct 13, 2025
Limited production in Week 5
Montgomery recorded four carries for 24 yards and caught both of his targets for 37 yards in Sunday's 30-17 loss to the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery nearly had a one-yard passing touchdown on the opening possession of the game to Jared Goff, but the score was nullified by an illegal motion penalty on Detroit. With the team falling behind early, the running back never really was able to establish himself on the ground, logging a season-low four totes. Montgomery will look to bounce back in Week 7 against the Buccaneers.
Oct 5, 2025
Accounts for two touchdowns in win
Montgomery rushed the ball 18 times for 65 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 37-24 win over the Bengals. He added one reception on one target for six yards while also completing one pass for three yards and a score.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery made his initial impact in the game as a passer, taking a direct snap and delivering a three-yard touchdown pass to Brock Wright early in the second quarter. He got going as a rusher in the second half, racking up 12 carries for 62 yards -- highlighted by an eight-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter. While it wasn't his most efficient performance, Montgomery bounced back from a poor Week 4 showing while logging a season-high 18 carries.
Sep 28, 2025
Can't find running room
Montgomery rushed the ball nine times for 12 yards in Sunday's 34-10 win over the Browns.
ANALYSIS
The game script set up well for Montgomery, as the Lions led by multiple scores for nearly the entire second half. However, Jahmyr Gibbs out-touched him 17-9, and Montgomery was stymied even when he did get opportunity. His longest rush went for only four yards, and he failed to reach 20 rushing yards for only the third time in his 32 games with the Lions.
Sep 22, 2025
Career rushing night on MNF
Montgomery carried the ball 12 times for 151 yards and a pair of touchdowns while adding a 13-yard reception in Monday's 38-30 win over Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery waltzed into a tough road environment and casually dropped a new personal best of 151 rushing yards in a single game. The seven-year pro's longest run of 72 yards surprisingly did not result in either of his two trips to the end zone Monday. Jahmyr Gibbs (22-67-2) finished with 10 more carries and 14 more touches than Montgomery, which was the largest disparity through three weeks for Detroit's talented backfield tandem. Expect the Lions to feed the Browns a heavy dose of both Montgomery and Gibbs when the two teams meet in Week 4.
Sep 14, 2025
Compiles 61 total yards, TD in win
Montgomery rushed 11 times for 57 yards and a touchdown and secured his only target for four yards in the Lions' 52-21 win over the Bears on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery and backfield mate Jahmyr Gibbs each recorded a rushing touchdown, and Montgomery also had just one fewer carry than his star teammate, albeit while also compiling 37 fewer rushing yards. Montgomery still averaged 5.2 yards per carry, however, and he rang up his first TD of the season on a one-yard run late in the first quarter. Through two games, it appears the backs will continue to operate in a fairly close timeshare, but they face a thorny matchup in a Week 3 road trip to face the Ravens on Monday night, Sept. 22.
Sep 7, 2025
Held to 43 total yards
Montgomery rushed the ball 11 times for 25 yards in Sunday's 27-13 loss to the Packers. He added four receptions on four targets for 18 yards.
ANALYSIS
The Lions' offense struggled to get on track, which led to underwhelming performances for nearly all of their skill-position players. Montgomery wasn't an exception, but he did manage 15 touches, nearly evenly matching Jahmyr Gibbs' 19. A more typical game script may change how the backs are deployed, but Montgomery still appears to have a significant role in Detroit's backfield heading into a Week 2 matchup against the Bears.
Jul 22, 2025
Not worried about O-line losses
Montgomery recently said he has "no concern" about Detroit's offensive line changes and is confident in new offensive coordinator John Morton.
ANALYSIS
The Lions lost C Frank Ragnow to retirement and RG Kevin Zeitler to the Titans, leaving two starting spots up for competition between rookie second-round pick Tate Ratledge, 2024 sixth-rounder Christian Mahogany and 27-year-old Trystan Colon, among others. Morton otherwise gets the same personnel as predecessor Ben Johnson, including an elite OT duo and one of the best groups of skill-position players in the league. There's always some chance the new playcaller gives Jahmyr Gibbs a few more snaps and touches at Montgomery's expense, but wholesale changes are unlikely after the Lions scored a league-high 33.2 points per game last season.
Jan 19, 2025
Quiet in return
Montgomery rushed the ball seven times for 28 yards in Saturday's 45-31 divisional-round loss to the Commanders. He added one completion of 20 yards.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery returned from an MCL injury he suffered in Week 15, and the Lions attempted to get him involved early by giving him three carries across their first two offensive possessions. However, he was ultimately out-touched by Jahmyr Gibbs 20-7 and played a minor role in the offense. Despite the disappointing close, Montgomery enjoyed a strong second season in Detroit, tallying 12 touchdowns while averaging 4.2 yards per carry across 15 games. He remains under contract with the team and will likely be back in 2025 to complement Gibbs.
Jan 16, 2025
Set to return Saturday
Montgomery (knee) doesn't have a designation for Saturday's wild-card game against the Commanders.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery hurt the MCL in his left knee during a Week 15 loss to the Bills, after which there was uncertainty about his potential to return this season. Ultimately, after he received numerous opinions regarding the issue, the Lions made the decision to not place him on injured reserve, giving him a chance to come back at some point in the postseason. The call was a fortuitous one after Detroit claimed the No. 1 seed in the NFC, and Montgomery will miss only three games as a result of the injury. It's unclear how much work he may scoop up alongside Jahmyr Gibbs on Saturday, but at the very least Montgomery likely will claim some of the early-down and short-yardage reps that have allowed him to compile 25 rushing touchdowns in 28 regular-season contests with the Lions.
Jan 14, 2025
Gauged as full practice participant
The Lions listed Montgomery (knee) as a full participant in Tuesday's walk-through practice.
ANALYSIS
Though the Lions didn't take the field for a traditional practice coming off a bye week in the opening round of the playoffs, Montgomery's listed full participation seemingly supports the notion that the running back will be ready to go for Saturday's divisional-round game against the Commanders. Given that Montgomery missed the final three contests of the regular season due to an MCL sprain in his right knee, he could be asked to handle a more limited role out of the backfield in the Lions' postseason opener than he taken on prior to suffering the injury. Second-year tailback Jahmyr Gibbs thrived as the Lions' clear lead option out of the backfield during Montgomery's absence and still projects to get the larger share of the touches Saturday, though Montgomery's bruising running style and ability to contribute as a receiver will make him a welcome addition to the offense. Montgomery made 14 appearances during the regular season, carrying 185 times for 775 yards and 12 touchdowns while adding 36 catches for 3

Expected back for divisional round
Head coach Dan Campbell said Tuesday that he expects to have Montgomery (knee) available for the Lions' first playoff game in the divisional round, Justin Rogers of DetroitFootball.net reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery initially looked to be at risk of missing the rest of the season after he suffered a right knee injury in a Week 15 loss to the Bills, but he received good news when tests revealed an MCL sprain but no other major structural damage. The running back was able to avoid surgery to address the injury, and he seems to be responding well three weeks into his rehab program. Per Jared Ramsey of the Detroit Free Press, Montgomery went through his first full workout this past Saturday since suffering the knee injury, which included some change-of-pace work. With the Lions having clinched a first-round bye in the playoffs, Montgomery will benefit from more time to heal up before Detroit opens postseason play Jan. 18 or Jan. 19.
Dec 22, 2024
Eyeing divisional-round return
Montgomery plans to avoid surgery to address the MCL sprain in his right knee and will rehab the injury with the goal of returning for the divisional round of the playoffs, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
After Montgomery emerged from this past Sunday's 48-42 loss to the Bills with the knee injury, head coach Dan Campbell said Monday that the running back would require season-ending surgery. However, after Montgomery received three "high-level medical opinions" on his injury, per Rapoport, the consensus was that the 27-year-old would be able to avoid a procedure on the knee. Montgomery will still miss Detroit's final three games of the regular season and would also remain likely to miss the wild-card round, though that may be a moot point if the 12-2 Lions are able to secure a first-round bye in the playoffs. For whatever length of time Montgomery misses, Jahmyr Gibbs is poised to see as heightened role as Detroit's clear lead back, while Craig Reynolds and Sione Vaki could see more opportunities as backups to Gibbs.
Dec 20, 2024
Unsure about IR
Lions coach Dan Campbell said Friday that the team hasn't made a decision about placing Montgomery (knee) on injured reserve, Eric Woodyard of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery spent much of this week visiting medical experts and now believes he can return from his MCL injury before the end of the season without undergoing surgery. Placing him on injured reserve before Sunday's game against the Bears would not only rule Montgomery out for the rest of the season but also for Detroit's first game of the playoffs. Given that reality, he may be kept off on the roster even if theres no chance he plays again during the regular season. The Lions won't have a playoff game until January 18/19 if they earn the No. 1 seed, giving Montgomery five weeks from the date of his initial injury to recover.
Dec 19, 2024
May return for playoffs
Montgomery (knee) is now optimistic he'll avoid surgery and hopes to return during the playoffs, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Previously expected to undergo season-ending surgery for an MCL tear, Montgomery apparently got promising feedback from medical experts and now hopes he can recover with rest. The report suggests he'll still miss the rest of the regular season but may return at some point in January for a Detroit team that's currently battling for the No. 1 seed in the NFC.
Dec 18, 2024
Seeking third opinion on injury
Lions head coach Dan Campbell said Wednesday that Montgomery (knee) is seeking a third opinion on the severity of his MCL injury, which is why the team has not yet placed him on IR, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Campbell has already said Montgomery is expected to undergo season-ending surgery to address an MCL sprain in his right knee, but with Detroit gearing up to hopefully make a significant playoff push, the standout running back is seeking every alternative option. The expectation remains, though, that Montgomery will be shut down for the remainder of the 2024 campaign, leaving Jahmyr Gibbs atop the backfield, with Craig Reynolds and rookie Sione Vaki handling expanded depth roles.
Dec 16, 2024
Confirmed done for season
Coach Dan Campbell said Monday that Montgomery will undergo season-ending knee surgery and miss the remainder of the 2024 campaign, Eric Woodyard of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
"We're gonna miss him, man," Campbell said. Montgomery is reportedly dealing with a torn MCL, which he suffered in Sunday's Week 15 loss to the Bills. Montgomery, however, continued to play through the injury, so it came as a shock Monday when the nature of the injury was revealed to the public. It's yet another crushing blow to Detroit's injury-riddled roster. Montgomery's loss sets Jahmyr Gibbs up to be a workhorse back the rest of the way. Behind Gibbs on the depth chart are special teams ace Craig Reynolds and rookie Sione Vaki. Jermar Jefferson is additional depth and is currently on the practice squad. Montgomery's season finishes with 185 carries for 775 yards (4.2 yards per carry) and 12 touchdowns. He added 36 catches for 341 yards on 38 targets in the pass game. Montgomery will likely be placed on injured reserve in the coming days.
Dec 16, 2024
Suffers potentially serious injury
Montgomery (knee) sustained an MCL injury in his knee during Sunday's 48-42 loss to the Bills, the severity of which could be season-ending, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery is undergoing additional tests on his knee Monday and will be seek a second opinion on whatever initial results he receives, but Schefter reports that at this time the standout running back is considered out indefinitely. The Lions have yet to make an official announcement regarding Montgomery's status, but the severity of his knee injury may ultimately rule him out for the remainder of the regular season, and thus the fantasy playoffs, if not the entire 2024 campaign. Montgomery's injury is the latest in a series of brutal blows for Detroit's roster, especially as the team works to mount an impactful playoff run. The lone bright spot for the Lions is that Jahmyr Gibbs remains a backfield option capable of thriving in a lead role. Beginning Sunday versus Chicago, though, it may fall to Craig Reynolds and Sione Vaki to complement Gibbs in Montgomery's place.
Dec 15, 2024
Limited by game script
Montgomery rushed the ball five times for four yards in Sunday's 48-42 loss to the Bills. He added four receptions on four targets for 31 yards.
ANALYSIS
The Lions fell behind quickly in the contest and they attempted only 15 rushes as a result. That left Montgomery largely uninvolved, though he did top 30 receiving yards for the fourth straight game. A Week 16 matchup against the Bears should allow a more balanced offensive gameplan for the Lions, with Montgomery returning to a more typical level of involvement.
Dec 6, 2024
Another TD in division win
Montgomery rushed 14 times for 51 yards and a touchdown and brought in all five targets for 33 yards in the Lions' 34-31 win over the Packers on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery capped off the opening possession of the game with a three-yard walk-in rushing touchdown, his fifth in the last five games. The veteran back generally found running room at a premium, but he set a new season high in receptions and targets. Montgomery has consistently complemented his work on the ground with solid production through the air of late, as he'll head into a Week 15 home showdown against the Bills on Sunday, Dec. 15 with a 14-143 line on 14 targets in the last four contests.
Nov 28, 2024
Surpasses 100 total yards Thursday
Montgomery (shoulder) rushed 21 times for 88 yards while catching all three of his targets for 36 yards in Thursday's 23-20 win over the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery showed no ill effects from the shoulder injury that prompted him to exit in the third quarter of Detroit's 24-6 Week 12 win over the Colts. His 21 carries easily surpassed his season average of 13.2 rushing attempts heading into this game, and he topped Jahmyr Gibbs by one rushing yard for the team lead. After being held without a rushing touchdown Thursday for only the third time this season, Montgomery will look to get back into the end zone Week 14 against the Packers on Thursday Night Football.
Nov 28, 2024
Active on Thanksgiving
Montgomery (shoulder) is active for Thursday's game against the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery exited this past Sunday's 24-6 win at Indianapolis late in the third quarter due to a shoulder injury and didn't return. Afterward, he told Eric Woodyard of ESPN.com that he believed the Lions made the right decision to rest him down the stretch and also that he intended to play Thursday. Detroit held walkthroughs during the entirety of Week 13 prep, and Montgomery followed a DNP/LP/FP practice regimen. It was enough for the sixth-year pro to be available, and he likely will retain his normal role in the backfield working in tandem with Jahmyr Gibbs, which has amounted to 169 touches for 873 yards from scrimmage and 11 rushing TDs for Montgomery in 11 appearances this season.
Nov 27, 2024
Listed as questionable
Montgomery (shoulder) is listed as questionable for Thursday's game against the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery missed the fourth quarter of Sunday's win over the Colts but said afterward he'd be ready by Thursday. It's not entirely clear his optimistic assessment was accurate, but there's at least a hint working his his favor after the Lions listed him as a full practice participant Wednesday. The catch is that they only held walk-through practices on a short week, which means Montgomery didn't really get to test his ankle in drills against teammates. Fantasy managers will want to check back for the final call on his active status 90 minutes before the 12:30 p.m. ET kickoff Thursday.
Nov 26, 2024
Limited in Tuesday's walk-through
The Lions listed Montgomery (shoulder) as a limited participant in Tuesday's walk-through practice.
ANALYSIS
After leaving early in Sunday's 24-6 win over the Colts with the shoulder issue, Montgomery's status is one to watch with the Lions facing a quick turnaround for Week 13 with a Thursday game against the Bears. The Lions aren't likely to hold any high-intensity practices during the short week, but Montgomery's improvement in being estimated as a non-participant Monday to a limited participant Tuesday is generally a positive sign. Head coach Dan Campbell told Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press earlier Tuesday that he feels good about Montgomery's chances of playing in the Thanksgiving Day game, but it won't be known whether the running back carries a designation into that contest until after the Lions release their final injury report Wednesday.
Nov 25, 2024
Listed as DNP on Monday
Montgomery (shoulder) was listed as a non-participant in Monday's walkthrough practice, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery injured his shoulder in Sunday's win over the Colts and had to go to the locker room in the second half. He wasn't cleared to return, but after the game, Montgomery said he anticipated being ready for Thursday's Thanksgiving game against the Bears. Montgomery will likely need to practice in some fashion Tuesday or Wednesday in order to play on the short week. If he's unable to go, Jahmyr Gibbs would be a candidate for increased work.
Nov 24, 2024
Plans to play Thursday
Montgomery, who exited Sunday's 24-6 win over the Colts with a shoulder injury, indicated afterward that he'll be ready for Thursday's game against the Bears, Eric Woodyard of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Per the report, Montgomery added that he believed it was a smart decision to rest him after he sustained his injury, but for now it looks like he's not in line to miss any action beyond Sunday. That said, look for the running back's name to be on the Lions' upcoming injury reports ahead of Thursday's contest.
Nov 24, 2024
Injures shoulder Sunday
Montgomery sustained a shoulder injury during Sunday's game at Indianapolis.
ANALYSIS
In the waning moments of the third quarter, Montgomery was seen walking to the locker room without a helmet or jersey, after which he was deemed questionable to return, per Nolan Bianchi of The Detroit News. Prior to his exit, Montgomery had eight carries for 37 yards and one touchdown and three catches (on three targets) for 36 yards. Jahmyr Gibbs should handle most of the backfield reps for the Lions for as long as Montgomery is sidelined.
Nov 17, 2024
Two more touchdowns in win
Montgomery rushed 15 times for 75 yards and two touchdowns and brought in all three targets for 20 yards in the Lions' 52-6 win over the Jaguars on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery once again found himself in the end zone in the Lions' lopsided win, making multiple trips via his two- and six-yard runs in the first half. The veteran back was also more involved than usual as a receiver, with his three receptions tying for his second-highest figure of the season in that category. Montgomery's ultra-reliable red-zone role will keep him as a highly viable fantasy asset in all formats heading into a Week 12 road matchup against the Colts.
Nov 11, 2024
Punches in short TD on SNF
Montgomery rushed 12 times for 32 yards and a touchdown while adding 24 yards off of one reception in Sunday's 26-23 win over Houston.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery didn't have his finest game on the ground, but a short score in the third quarter helped round out a solid fantasy performance overall. The thunder of Detroit's two-star backfield saw 13 touches to Jahmyr Gibbs' 21, with the two backs being used in tandem as head coach Dan Campbell often does. Montgomery could see a more favorable game script when the 7-1 Lions host the 2-8 Jaguars next Sunday.
Nov 3, 2024
Totals 96 yards in win
Montgomery rushed the ball 17 times for 73 yards in Sunday's 24-14 win over the Packers. He added three receptions on three targets for 23 yards.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery paced the Detroit backfield in sloppy conditions, accounting for 20 touches as opposed to 12 for Jahmyr Gibbs. That marked his highest carry total since Week 3, and he was steady with the opportunity by averaging 4.3 yards per carry with a long gain of 12. However, he did fail to find the end zone for the second time in his last three contests, which has limited his fantasy output in the split backfield.
Oct 27, 2024
Saves day with early score
Montgomery rushed the ball nine times for 33 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 52-14 win over the Titans. He added on reception on one target for five yards and also recorded a three-yard touchdown pass.
ANALYSIS
The Lions had an odd game script to work with, as they were handed several short fields by their defense and special teams. Volume was limited across the board, and Montgomery turned in a muted stat line as a result. Still, he found the end zone twice, first with a seven-yard run. He then added a three-yard pass to Sam LaPorta on a trick play just before halftime. Montgomery has at least one touchdown in six of seven games this season, and his role is extremely valuable in the explosive Detroit offense.
Oct 21, 2024
Knee not a long-term concern
Speaking with the media Monday, coach Dan Campbell said there's no long-term concern about the knee injury David Montgomery suffered in Sunday's win over the Vikings, Justin Rogers of DetroitFootball.net reports.
ANALYSIS
Campbell said Montgomery took a knee to the back of his knee and suffered a "bad bruise," per Rogers. Montgomery was briefly forced to leave the win over Minnesota, but he was able to return to the game after being checked by the medical staff. Montgomery rushed a season-low nine times for 61 yards and added 3-39-0 on four targets in the pass game. It was his first game without a touchdown this season. Jahmyr Gibbs was able to pick up more of the slack with Montgomery hobbled, finishing with 160 total yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns on 19 touches. Montgomery sounds like he should be fine for next Sunday's game against the Titans, but he could have his practice reps dialed back this week.
Oct 20, 2024
Deals with adversity in Week 7 win
Montgomery rushed nine times for 31 yards and brought in three of four targets for 39 yards in the Lions' 31-29 win over the Vikings on Sunday. He also lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery missed time in the first half with a knee injury, and although he was able to return, he was significantly outpaced by backfield mate Jahmyr Gibbs (160 total yards, two rushing TDs). Montgomery then nearly cost the Lions the game with his rare fourth-quarter fumble, which the Vikings' Ivan Pace was able to scoop up and return 36 yards for a touchdown. Montgomery's rush attempts and rushing yards were both season lows and he also failed to score for the first time this season, but he'll have a chance at getting back on track with a full workload in Week 8 home matchup against the Titans.
Oct 20, 2024
Back in Sunday's game
Montgomery (knee) returned to Sunday's game at Minnesota, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
In the middle of the first quarter, Montgomery remained on the turf for a spell after a carry for no gain before he limped off the field with team trainers. After getting examined and working out his knee on an exercise bike, he got back into the contest early in the second quarter. Montgomery will continue to work in tandem with Jahmyr Gibbs out of Detroit's backfield.
Oct 20, 2024
Injures knee Sunday
Montgomery was forced out of Sunday's game against the Vikings with a knee injury.
ANALYSIS
Before leaving the contest, Montgomery carried twice for three yards and caught both of his targets for 25 yards. In his absence, Jahmyr Gibbs, Craig Reynolds and Sione Vaki are left to handle the Lions' Week 7 backfield duties.
Oct 13, 2024
Pair of scores in win
Montgomery rushed the ball 12 times for 80 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 47-9 win over the Cowboys. He added one reception on one target for zero yards.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery got the Detroit offense rolling by racking up 28 rushing yards with a touchdown on the team's first drive. He found the end zone again just before halftime with a one-yard touchdown plunge to give him his first multi-score game of the season. Montgomery saw only three carries in the second half due to a blowout game script, and even while splitting work with Jahmyr Gibbs out of the backfield, he has at least 70 total yards and a touchdown in all five games this season.
Oct 12, 2024
Lands contract extension
The Lions are signing Montgomery to a contract extension that will run through 2027, Dan Miller of Fox2 Detroit reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery has a been tone-setter on offense for the Lions this season, scoring one touchdown in each of the team's four contests and tallying 271 yards on 63 carries along with 94 yards on nine catches overall. His contract was slated to run through 2025, so the extension will add two years to the deal. Further details -- including dollar amounts -- of the extension have not yet been announced.
Sep 30, 2024
Another touchdown in win
Montgomery rushed 12 times for 40 yards and a touchdown and brought in his only target for a 40-yard reception in the Lions' 42-29 win over the Seahawks on Monday night.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery saw backfield mate Jahmyr Gibbs receive a pair of rushing opportunities from inside the five-yard line that he parlayed into short touchdowns. However, those were preceded by Montgomery's own one-yard scoring rush in the first quarter that served as the first points of the night for either squad. He also contributed a career-long reception on the Lions' first play from scrimmage in the second half, igniting a drive that culminated in an Amon-Ra St. Brown touchdown pass to Jared Goff. Montgomery has recorded a rushing touchdown in each of the first four games of the season, and although he saw Gibbs log two more carries than him Monday night, the former should continue in a dependable role in a Week 6 road showdown with the Cowboys following a Week 5 bye.
Sep 22, 2024
Tops century mark and scores TD
Montgomery rushed 23 times for 105 yards and a touchdown while catching all three of his targets for 17 yards in Sunday's 20-13 win over the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery has a one-yard rushing touchdown in all three of Detroit's games this season, and he checked that accomplishment off on the opening drive against Arizona. He wasn't as successful on a key short-yardage carry in the third quarter, getting stuffed for no gain on fourth-and-1. Nonetheless, Montgomery set new season highs in both carries and rushing yards. Jahmyr Gibbs is the superior pass catcher in Detroit's backfield, but Montgomery has also been reliable in that regard, having caught all eight of his targets this season. Montgomery will try to extend his touchdown streak to seven consecutive regular-season games in Week 4 against the Seahawks.
Sep 15, 2024
Short-yardage success continues
Montgomery rushed 11 times for 35 yards and a touchdown while catching all four of his targets for 35 yards in Sunday's 20-16 loss to the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery scored his second one-yard touchdown in as many games in the third quarter, but he was otherwise outplayed by Jahmyr Gibbs, who turned 20 touches into 106 scrimmage yards. While Gibbs gets occasional goal-line opportunities, Montgomery gets most of his value from his short-yardage proficiency, as the former Bears running back has 15 rushing touchdowns in 16 regular-season games since joining the Lions. Montgomery will try to extend his season-opening touchdown streak in Week 3 against Arizona.
Sep 9, 2024
Caps dominant OT with winning TD
Montgomery rushed 17 times for 91 yards and a touchdown while catching his only target for two yards in Sunday's 26-20 overtime win over the Rams.
ANALYSIS
After watching Jahmyr Gibbs score a one-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter, Montgomery powered in one of his own to win the game in overtime. That touchdown capped a drive on which Montgomery dominated a tired Rams defense, producing 45 yards and the game-winning score on five rushing attempts. Montgomery will look to build on the momentum from his strong finish when the Lions host the Buccaneers in Week 2.
Jul 28, 2024
Geared up for year two with Detroit
Montgomery is entering his second campaign as a primary backfield option for the Lions.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery signed with Detroit ahead of the 2023 campaign, turning 219 carries into 1,015 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns, while also securing 16 receptions for 117 yards over 14 games with the Lions. The running back operated in the more "traditional" role in the backfield while Jahmyr Gibbs handled more of the receiving work at the position. That being said, although Montgomery had a career-low in receptions, his role as the bruiser with Detroit has proven to be a fruitful one over the last two years with Jamaal Williams scoring 17 touchdowns on the ground in 2022. With Gibbs' ADP in the first or second rounds of fantasy drafts, Montgomery's ADP sits around the mid-60's, providing great value to fantasy managers.

Finds end zone against 49ers
Montgomery rushed the ball 15 times for 93 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 34-31 loss to the 49ers. He added two receptions on two targets for 20 yards.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery accounted for Detroit's second score of the game with a one-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter. He was also efficient with his opportunities throughout the contest, ripping off long runs of 16 and 15 yards. That resulted in his highest yardage total since Week 10. Despite missing three games, Montgomery reached 1,000 rushing yards in the regular season for the second time in his career, and he also tallied a career-high 13 touchdowns. He'll likely be back with the Lions in 2024, continuing to form a potent combination with Jahmyr Gibbs out of the Detroit backfield.
Jan 21, 2024
Takes back seat to Gibbs in win
Montgomery carried the ball 10 times for 33 yards and caught three of four targets for 14 yards in Sunday's 31-23 divisional-round win over the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
The veteran running back failed to reach 50 scrimmage yards for the second time in three games and saw his four-game TD streak come to an end. Meanwhile, Jahmyr Gibbs topped 100 scrimmage yards and scored a touchdown, and Craig Reynolds also punched in a short score on fourth-and-1 late in the third quarter. Montgomery will likely be more involved in the game plan next weekend against the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game.
Jan 15, 2024
Leading rusher in WC win
Montgomery ran the ball 14 times for 57 yards and a touchdown while catching his only target for 11 yards in Sunday's 24-23 win over the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery kicked off the scoring Sunday when he capped off a 10-play, 75-yard opening drive with a one-yard touchdown run. The bruising back would go on to lead Detroit's backfield in both carries and yards while both he and Jahmyr Gibbs scored first-quarter touchdowns. In fact, the backfield mates finished the wild-card win with exactly 68 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown apiece. Detroit figures to employ a similar run-heavy strategy spearheaded by Montgomery in the upcoming NFC divisional round.
Jan 7, 2024
Ends regular season with another TD
Montgomery rushed 10 times for 40 yards with one touchdown during Sunday's 30-20 win over the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
While Montgomery drew the start and played into the fourth quarter with the rest of the Lions starters, he saw less work than Jahmyr Gibbs, who rushed 13 times for 30 yards and a touchdown of his own. However, the production was enough for the Iowa State product to end his first season in Detroit with more than 1,000 yards rushing (1,015) in 13 games while averaging one rushing touchdown per contest. With each of Sam LaPorta (knee), Jameson Williams (ankle), and Kalif Raymond (knee) banged up, the Lions could lean heavily on the run game in a matchup with the Rams in the NFC Wild Card Round.
Dec 30, 2023
Paces backfield in loss
Montgomery rushed 14 times for 65 yards and a touchdown and failed to bring in his only target in the Lions' 20-19 loss to the Cowboys on Saturday night.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery's rushing yardage total led the Lions on the night, and he notably outpaced backfield mate Jahmyr Gibbs by 22 yards despite seeing one less carry. Montgomery also was the only one of the pair to get into the end zone, recording a three-yard scoring run in the third quarter for his 12th touchdown of the campaign. The veteran did fail to record a receiving stat for the first time in Week 12, but with six trips to the end zone in the last six games, he heads into the Week 18 finale against the Vikings on Jan. 7 with plenty of momentum.
Dec 25, 2023
Finds end zone in Week 16 win
Montgomery rushed 17 times for 55 yards and a touchdown and caught both his targets for 14 yards in Sunday's 30-24 win over Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery logged eight carries on Detroit's first offensive drive, ending the 14-play march with a one-yard touchdown run. Jahmyr Gibbs largely took over in the Lions' backfield from there and finished with the better overall rushing line (15-80-2), though the potent duo ended with an equal number of total touches (19). Gibbs has proven to be an explosive force for Detroit in his rookie campaign, and he's gained at least 60 yards on the ground in four straight contests while scoring five times over that span, but Montgomery hasn't exactly faded away -- he's averaging 65.5 rushing yards with two TDs over the same four-game span. While a split backfield isn't typically an ideal situation for fantasy purposes, both Montgomery and Gibbs are performing well enough to be viable options in all formats. The pair will look to remain productive next Saturday in a road contest versus Dallas.
Dec 17, 2023
Totals 82 yards
Montgomery carried the ball 17 times for 85 yards in Saturday's 42-17 win over the Broncos. He added two receptions on three targets for -3 yards.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery saw 19 touches compared to 13 for Jahmyr Gibbs, though Gibbs out-gained him and also found the end zone twice. The latter factor is particularly concerning, as Gibbs' second score of the game came with the Lions up 35-10 and from the 12-yard line. Despite remaining relatively efficient, Montgomery has now failed to score in consecutive games after tallying 10 rushing touchdowns in his first nine contests of the campaign.
Dec 10, 2023
Racks up 85 total yards
Montgomery rushed the ball 10 times for 66 yards in Sunday's 28-13 loss to the Bears. He added three receptions on three targets for 19 yards.
ANALYSIS
The Lions were forced out of their typical run-heavy offensive attack, as they played from behind for nearly the entire game. As a result, Montgomery lost out on volume and split both touches and production almost exactly evenly with Jahmyr Gibbs. Since topping 100 rushing yards in his return from injury in Week 10, Montgomery has since failed to top 76 yards on the ground in his last four contests, though he had found the end zone in every game in that span before Sunday's loss.
Dec 3, 2023
Finds end zone in Week 13 win
Montgomery rushed 18 times for 56 yards and a touchdown and brought in one of two targets for minus-1 yard in the Lions' 33-28 win over the Saints on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery opened the scoring on the afternoon with a two-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter, but the rest of his afternoon was largely a struggle. The workhorse back has now scored in four consecutive contests, and his carry count Sunday was his highest since Week 5. Montgomery now gets a second crack at his old Bears teammates in a Week 14 road divisional clash.
Nov 30, 2023
Puts in full practice
Montgomery (foot) was a full practice participant Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery was a limited participant Wednesday in the Lions' first Week 13 practice, but his ability to take every rep a day later clears up any concern about his availability for Sunday's game in New Orleans. Since overcoming a rib injury following the Lions' Week 9 bye, the fifth-year running back is averaging 13.7 touches and 95.0 yards from scrimmage per game while scoring a touchdown in each of Detroit's last three contests.
Nov 29, 2023
Dealing with foot injury
Montgomery (foot) was a limited practice participant Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery has missed three games this season due to thigh (Week 3) and rib (Weeks 7-8) injuries, so it's unclear if his current foot issue is something that may threaten his availability for game day. In three appearances since returning to action Week 10, he's totaled 41 touches for 285 yards from scrimmage and three rushing TDs, while rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs has accrued 46 touches for 280 total yards and three rushing scores himself during that stretch. Montgomery's status will continue to be monitored as the week goes on to see how the Lions backfield could break down Sunday at New Orleans.
Nov 23, 2023
Scores another touchdown
Montgomery rushed 15 times for 71 yards with one touchdown and one two-point conversion during Thursday's 29-22 loss to the Packers.
ANALYSIS
After Jahmyr Gibbs seemed to eat into Montgomery's between-the-tackles role coming out of Detroit's Week 9 bye, Montgomery has seen four more carries than Gibbs in each of the two games since then. He also got the nod on a number of goal-line rushing attempts after Gibbs handled four of them over the past couple of weeks, and Montgomery took full advantage of the opportunity to remain the only running back outside of Raheem Mostert to average more than one rushing touchdown per game in 2023. However, Montgomery's role in the passing game was again dwarfed by Gibbs, whose eight targets Thursday is more than half of what Montgomery has seen all year. While both running backs will prevent the other from handling a workhorse role, all indications suggest that the Lions offense should continue to support two highly-fantasy-relevant running backs heading into a Week 13 matchup with New Orleans.
Nov 19, 2023
Scores go-ahead TD late in win
Montgomery rushed 12 times for 76 yards and a touchdown while catching both of his targets for 22 yards in Sunday's 31-26 win over the Bears.
ANALYSIS
After watching fellow running back Jahmyr Gibbs run in a two-yard touchdown in the second quarter, Montgomery scored the game-winning touchdown from one yard out with 29 seconds left in the fourth. This was the second consecutive game since Montgomery's return from a rib injury in which both of Detroit's top two running backs found the end zone. Montgomery and Gibbs will likely continue to split carries as Montgomery looks to add to his season total of eight rushing touchdowns on Thanksgiving against the Packers .
Nov 12, 2023
Makes impact in return
Montgomery carried the ball 12 times for 116 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 41-38 win over the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Seeing his first action since Week 6 after missing Detroit's last two games due to a rib injury, Montgomery didn't skip a beat, recording his third 100-yard performance of the season and scoring his seventh rushing TD on a 75-yard gallop in the second quarter. However, the fifth-year back didn't see the same kind of workload he had prior to his absence, as Jahmyr Gibbs racked up 112 scrimmage yards and two rushing scores on 17 touches. Even in a timeshare with Gibbs, Montgomery should still be productive, and the duo gets another potentially juicy matchup in Week 11 against the Bears.
Nov 9, 2023
Logs full practice Thursday
Montgomery (ribs) practiced in full Thursday.
ANALYSIS
The Lions didn't get in any on-field work Wednesday, when they listed Montgomery as a full participant. One day later, he again received the same listing, only this time the team practiced. Montgomery thus is poised to see his first game action since Week 6 on Sunday at the Chargers, putting an end to a two-game absence. The biggest question mark in Detroit's backfield moving forward is the breakdown of snaps between Montgomery and rookie Jahmyr Gibbs, the latter of whom tallied 51 touches for 315 yards from scrimmage and two rushing TDs while the former was sidelined.
Nov 8, 2023
Gets full listing Wednesday
Montgomery (ribs) was listed as a full participant on Wednesday's estimated injury report.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery hasn't suited up since suffering a rib cartilage injury Week 6 at Tampa Bay, missing two games as a result. With the benefit of a Week 9 bye, though, he appears poised to return Sunday on the road against the Chargers. Having said that, the Lions didn't hold practice Wednesday, so his listing on the Lions' last two reports of Week 10 prep will be telling for his availability and potential upcoming workload. Rookie first-round pick Jahmyr Gibbs was a workhorse during Montgomery's absence, racking up 51 touches for 315 yards from scrimmage and two rushing TDs, so the breakdown of reps between the two this weekend will be interesting to see, assuming Montgomery is active.
Nov 6, 2023
Trending toward Week 10 return
Lions head coach Dan Campbell said Monday that Montgomery (rib) is trending toward a return to action Sunday against the Chargers, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Before the Lions went on bye Week 9, Montgomery missed the team's previous two games with a rib cartilage injury. The time off appears to have allowed Montgomery to heal, as Kyle Meinke of MLive.com relays that the running back didn't seem to inhibited while participating in Monday's walk-through workout coming off the bye week. In the three games this season in which both Montgomery and first-round pick Gibbs have been available, Montgomery has handily paced the Detroit backfield, averaging 24 touches in those contests. However, with Gibbs averaging 5.3 yards per carry on the season and coming off a landmark performance Week 8 against the Raiders in which he accounted for 189 yards from scrimmage, the rookie could end up poaching more work from the veteran than he had previously. Campbell told Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press on Monday that he intends to take the Detroit backfield "a little by committee," adding that Gibbs will "get his fair share now."
Nov 6, 2023
Could return after bye
Montgomery (ribs) is due to return for the Lions' Week 10 matchup with the Chargers, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery will have had a full four weeks to recover from his rib cartilage injury before the matchup in Los Angeles on Sunday, and Detroit seemingly signaled their confidence in his availability by parting ways with No. 4 running back Devine Ozigbo last Thursday. While it's not clear how the Lions will divvy up the rushing workload after rookie Jahmyr Gibbs excelled in Montgomery's absence, the veteran seems likely to reclaim a significant amount of touches after averaging 22.0 carries in his first four games of the year.
Oct 28, 2023
Unsurprisingly ruled out
Montgomery (ribs) has been ruled out ahead of Monday's game against the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
It never seemed possible Montgomery would play prior to the team's Week 9 bye, especially given the severity of the rib cartilage issue. In Montgomery's two absences this season, Jahmyr Gibbs has tallied 148 rushing yards on 28 carries to go along with 16 receptions for 97 yards and one touchdown. Expect the rookie, and Craig Reynolds, to get a heavy workload against a vulnerable Raiders defense.
Oct 27, 2023
Sits out another practice
Montgomery (ribs) isn't practicing Friday, Colton Pouncy of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
With two straight absences to begin Week 8 prep, Montgomery appears to be trending toward missing a second straight game due to a rib cartilage injury. The Lions will wait and see what Montgomery is able to do Saturday -- if anything -- before handing him a designation for Monday's game against the Raiders. If Montgomery is once again sidelined Week 8, rookie Jahmyr Gibbs would be in line for another turn as the Lions' lead back.
Oct 26, 2023
Not practicing to start Week 8 prep
Lions head coach Dan Campbell said Montgomery (ribs) won't practice Thursday, Eric Woodyard of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
While Campbell said that Montgomery is showing improvement in his recovery from cartilage damage to his ribs, the coach noted he's counting on Jahmyr Gibbs to step up and lead the Detroit backfield this week. Campbell's comments imply that Montgomery is trending toward a second straight absence Monday against the Raiders, though whether the running back is ruled out ahead of the contest or listed as doubtful or questionable may not be decided until after Saturday's practice session. The Lions are on bye Week 9, giving Montgomery added time to heal up before a Week 10 game against the Chargers on Nov. 12.
Oct 20, 2023
Out for Week 7
Montgomery (ribs) has been ruled out for Sunday's game in Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery will miss at least one contest due to the rib cartilage issue that he sustained this past Sunday at Tampa Bay. Meanwhile, rookie first-round pick Jahmyr Gibbs (hamstring) doesn't have a designation for Week 7, indicating he'll be the Lions' primary running back Sunday, especially with Craig Reynolds (hamstring/toe) questionable to play. Montgomery's next chance to suit up is Monday, Oct. 30 versus the Raiders.
Oct 19, 2023
Absent again
Montgomery (ribs) didn't practice Thursday, Colton Pouncy of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery has missed consecutive practices after a rib injury forced him out of Sunday's win over Tampa Bay. Coach Dan Campbell already suggested the running back likely would miss some time, which means there's a good chance Montgomery will be listed as 'out' or 'doubtful' this Friday when the Lions release their final injury report for Sunday's game in Baltimore.
Oct 18, 2023
Doesn't practice Wednesday
Montgomery (ribs) was absent from Wednesday's walkthrough.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery was knocked out of Week 6 action with what eventually was termed a rib cartilage issue, which coach Dan Campbell told Colton Pouncy of The Athletic on Monday likely will result in at least one missed game. Meanwhile, No. 2 running back Jahmyr Gibbs was listed as limited Wednesday, and fellow reserve Craig Reynolds sat out (like Montgomery) due to hamstring and toe issues. With all three of Detriot's backfield options banged-up at the moment, the overall situation will be one to watch as the week goes on to see who may be able to play Sunday at Baltimore.
Oct 16, 2023
Expected to miss time
Coach Dan Campbell said Monday that Montgomery (ribs) is expected to miss some time, Colton Pouncy of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery is dealing with a rib cartilage issue, and Campbell said it's not an easy thing to endure as a running back. Montgomery played just 18 snaps in Sunday's win over the Bucs before leaving with the injury. On the season, he's rushed 94 times for 385 yards and six touchdowns, adding six catches for 66 yards on 10 targets as a receiver. In Montgomery's likely Week 7 absence, the Lions hope to get Jahmyr Gibbs (hamstring) back and will also lean more on Craig Reynolds.
Oct 15, 2023
Set for further testing on ribs
Montgomery (ribs) will undergo further testing on the injury that knocked him out of Sunday's 20-6 win over the Buccaneers, and the severity of his injury has yet to be determined, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery was injured on a hard landing following a second-quarter tackle. X-rays on Montgomery's rib injury came back negative, but further medical tests are required to determine the precise nature and severity of his injury. With Jahmyr Gibbs (hamstring) also banged up, Craig Reynolds could be Detroit's lead back in Week 7 against Baltimore if Montgomery misses further game action.
Oct 15, 2023
Not returning Sunday
Montgomery (ribs) has been ruled out of Sunday's contest at Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
After landing hard while being tackled from behind in the second quarter, Montgomery needed medical attention on the field before going to the sideline and eventually the locker room. He was favoring his left side, and the Lions diagnosed him with a rib injury. According to Pam Oliver on Fox's broadcast, X-rays came back negative for Montgomery, but the issue is severe enough to keep him off the field for the rest of Week 6. With Jahmyr Gibbs (hamstring) inactive and Montgomery out, Craig Reynolds and Devine Ozigbo are Detroit's healthy and available running backs for the rest of Sunday's outing.
Oct 15, 2023
X-rays negative, still questionable to return
X-rays on Montgomery's ribs were returned negative Sunday at Tampa Bay, but he remains questionable to return to the contest, Pam Oliver of Fox's broadcast reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery took a hard fall when he was tackled from behind in the second quarter and required medical attention on the field. He eventually made his way to the sideline and then the locker room favoring his left side, which was revealed to be a rib issue. While he hasn't officially been ruled out of Sunday's game, Montgomery will yield the backfield to Craig Reynolds and Devine Ozigbo due to Jahmyr Gibbs (hamstring) being inactive.
Oct 15, 2023
Has rib injury
Montgomery was diagnosed with a rib injury during Sunday's game in Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery was tackled from behind in the second quarter and needed medical attention on the field before going to the sideline and eventually the locker room. It's unclear if he'll be able to return, but if Montgomery doesn't, Craig Reynolds will be the Lions' primary runner for the rest of Week 6, with Devine Ozigbo the other healthy option due to Jahymer Gibbs (hamstring) being inactive.
Oct 15, 2023
Makes early exit Sunday
Montgomery departed Sunday's game at Tampa Bay due to an undisclosed injury, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery seemed to be favoring his left side after he was tackled hard from behind in the second quarter. After going to the sideline, he eventually walked with team trainers to the locker room. At the time of his exit, he had six carries for 14 yards and one catch (on one target) for 19 yards. As long as Montgomery is sidelined, Craig Reynolds likely will lead the Lions backfield with rookie Jahmyr Gibbs (hamstring) sidelined.
Oct 13, 2023
Poised for three-down role again
Montgomery is expected to serve as the Lions' top pass-catching option out of the backfield in addition to handling his usual duties as the team's lead runner in Sunday's game against the Buccaneers with Jahmyr Gibbs (hamstring) ruled out for a second straight week.
ANALYSIS
While Gibbs was sidelined for last week's 42-24 win over the Panthers, Montgomery operated as a three-down workhorse, playing 90 percent of the running-back snaps through the first three quarters before backup Craig Reynolds picked up more work in the fourth once the outcome was in less doubt. For the fourth time in as many appearances on the season, Montgomery logged double-digit carries (19, for 109 yards and a touchdown), but the absence of Gibbs paved the way for Montgomery to see his most involvement in the passing game to date. After drawing just three targets total over his first three appearances, Montgomery was targeted six times Week 5, finishing with two catches for 20 yards. Another healthy workload on the ground and through the air should be in store for Montgomery on Sunday, making him a must-start option in the majority of leagues.
Oct 8, 2023
Another big game
Montgomery rushed 19 times for 109 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 42-24 win over the Panthers. He also caught two of six targets for 20 yards.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery opened the scoring with a 42-yard touchdown on Detroit's first offensive series. With rookie Jahmyr Gibbs (hamstring) sidelined, Montgomery was the clear focal point of the backfield and continued his excellent start to the season. Along with scoring in each of his four appearances, Montgomery has now topped 125 scrimmage yards in consecutive games. Whether or not Gibbs can return in Week 6 versus the Buccaneers, Montgomery figures to remain key to the Lions' offensive success.
Oct 8, 2023
To be lead runner with Gibbs out
Montgomery will be the Lions' top available running back with Jahmyr Gibbs (hamstring) inactive Sunday in New England.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery hasn't been lacking for touches in his three appearances with a healthy Gibbs this season, racking up 69 carries and three catches on as many targets for 289 yards from scrimmage and five rushing TDs to date. With Gibbs sidelined Sunday, Montgomery should retain his usual volume on the ground, but he also could get a few more looks as a pass catcher considering Detroit's other available RBs are Craig Reynolds (20 targets in 23 career games) and Zonovan Knight (14 and eight, respectively).
Sep 29, 2023
Explodes for three touchdowns
Montgomery rushed 32 times for 121 yards with three touchdowns while catching both of his targets for 20 yards during Thursday's 34-20 win over Green Bay.
ANALYSIS
Despite speculation over Montgomery's level of involvement coming off a thigh injury, the veteran wound up reclaiming full control of the backfield from rookie Jahmyr Gibbs, who finished with eight carries and five targets. The extent to which he did so was nothing short of shocking, as Montgomery tied his career high in rushing attempts while absurdly getting more usage on the ground than quarterback Jared Goff had through the air. With four touchdowns in his first three games with the Lions, Montgomery appears to have picked up right where Jamaal Williams left off in 2022. The good times could keep rolling in a Week 5 matchup with a Panthers team the allowed the second-most rushing touchdowns (six) through the end of Week 3.
Sep 28, 2023
Back in action in Week 4
Montgomery (thigh) is listed as active Thursday at Green Bay.
ANALYSIS
Despite conflicting reports about his availability for Week 4 earlier Thursday, Montgomery will miss just one game as a result of the bruised left thigh that he suffered Week 2 against the Seahawks. Considering he was listed as limited on Lions practice reports Monday through Wednesday, though, there's a chance he'll be operating on a snap count Thursday. Prior to the aforementioned injury, Montgomery racked up 37 carries for 141 yards and two touchdowns and hauled in his only target for seven yards in a little more than six quarters of action. If Montgomery is unable to handle such a workload, rookie first-round pick Jahmyr Gibbs will be the primary beneficiary in the Lions backfield.
Sep 28, 2023
Likely to play Thursday
Montgomery (thigh) is expected to suit up versus the Packers on Thursday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Pelissero corrects an early report which had stated that Montgomery, in addition to LT Taylor Decker (ankle), were not on track for Thursday Night Football. Instead, it looks like Montgomery is trending in the right direction to retake the field after having missed just one game due to a right thigh injury. In any case, confirmation on Montgomery's status will come prior to Thursday's 8:15 ET kickoff, and fantasy managers will likely want to monitor the situation until his status is made official. If Montgomery is indeed able to go versus Green Bay, he and Jahmyr Gibbs will once again lead Detroit's backfield.
Sep 28, 2023
Not expected to play Thursday
Montgomery (thigh) isn't expected to play Thursday night against the Packers, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Pelissero notes that earlier in the week there had been some optimism regarding the availability of Montgomery, who the Lions listed as questionable, but it appears as though the team is inclined to err on the side of caution with the running back ahead of Week 4 action. Confirmation of Montgomery's status will arrive prior to Thursday's 8:15 ET kickoff, but if he is indeed inactive, fellow RB Jahmyr Gibbs would once again be in line to see an expanded role, with Craig Reynolds and Zonovan Knight on hand in reserve.
Sep 27, 2023
Questionable after another LP
Montgomery (thigh) is listed as questionable for Thursday's game in Green Bay, Eric Woodyard of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Lions held walkthrough practices each day this week and listed Montgomery as a limited participant for every one. Four others players got the same treatment -- all starters or key guys -- and all four now are listed as questionable for Thursday night. That includes LT Taylor Decker (ankle) and LG Jonah Jackson (thigh), while RG Halapoulivaati Vaitai (knee) and swing tackle Matt Nelson (ankle) are already ruled out. The Lions can't expect great run-blocking with so many linemen banged up, and at this point it's not clear if Montgomery of Jahmyr Gibbs will be spearheading the rushing attack. Montgomery may end up a game-time decision Thursday evening, with his availability having a huge impact on Gibbs' fantasy value after the rookie got more carries Week 3 (17) than in Weeks 1 and 2 combined (14).
Sep 26, 2023
Another limited listing
Montgomery (thigh) was limited at Tuesday's walkthrough.
ANALYSIS
After hurting his thigh Week 2 versus the Seahawks, Montgomery was unable to practice at all prior to being inactive this past Sunday against the Falcons. This week, he's been estimated as a limited participant on both of the Lions' injury reports. Coach Dan Campbell relayed Tuesday that he's "starting to feel pretty good about" Montgomery being able to suit up Thursday at Green Bay. Wednesday's practice report will reveal whether or not Montgomery has a designation for Week 4 action.
Sep 26, 2023
Trending in right direction
Head coach Dan Campbell said Tuesday that he's "starting to feel pretty good about" Montgomery (thigh) playing in Thursday's game versus the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery missed Week 3 due to a thigh injury and was listed as a limited participant on Monday's estimated practice report. His potential return would likely mean less usage for rookie first-round pick Jahmyr Gibbs, who saw 17 rushing attempts versus Atlanta after garnering just 14 through the first two weeks of the season. Montgomery isn't cleared yet, though, so fantasy managers should still monitor Detroit's injury reports.
Sep 25, 2023
Listed as limited Monday
Montgomery (thigh) was a limited participant on Monday's practice estimate.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery was injured in Week 2 against Seattle and didn't suit up for Sunday's 20-6 win over Atlanta. In Montgomery's absence, Jahmyr Gibbs took on a workhorse role with 17 carries for 80 yards, while Craig Reynolds and Zonovan Knight combined for 28 rushing yards on seven carries. Montgomery's limited participation Monday suggests he has a chance to return for Thursday's game in Green Bay, though Tuesday's injury report will provide clarification on that front.
Sep 24, 2023
Inactive for Week 3 matchup
Montgomery (thigh) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Falcons.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery's inactive status comes as little surprise after the right thigh injury kept him from practicing Wednesday through Friday before he took a doubtful designation into the weekend. With Montgomery now officially sitting out the Week 3 matchup, rookie Jahmyr Gibbs is expected to be in store for an expanded role out of the Detroit backfield. Craig Reynolds and Zonovan Knight will be the available depth options behind Gibbs.
Sep 22, 2023
Deemed doubtful
Montgomery (thigh) didn't practice Friday and is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against Atlanta, Eric Woodyard of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery already said he expected to miss time and then went through the week without practicing. He thus seems highly unlikely to play, though the Lions will leave the door open with a 'doubtful' designation in case Montgomery's thigh bruise improves dramatically between Friday evening and Sunday morning. The Falcons and Lions are scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff in a game that figures to draw extra attention from the fantasy world thanks to the presence of rookie RBs Jahmyr Gibbs and Bijan Robinson. Just don't be surprised if Craig Reynolds (for the Lions) and Tyler Allgeier (for the Falcons) also get a bunch of carries.
Sep 21, 2023
Misses another practice
Montgomery (thigh) remained sidelined during Thursday's practice, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery also missed Wednesday's session, which sets the stage for Friday's practice to loom large for the running back in terms of his chances of suiting up Sunday versus the Falcons. If Montgomery is unavailable this weekend, Jahmyr Gibbs would be in a position to see added touches Week 3, with Craig Reynolds and Zonovan Knight on hand to serve as complementary options in Detroit's backfield.
Sep 20, 2023
Not practicing
Montgomery (thigh) isn't practicing Wednesday, Colton Pouncy of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery told reporters Sunday he might need "a couple weeks" to recover from his thigh bruise, while coach Dan Campbell used the term "day-to-day" less than 24 hours later. Either way, Montgomery never figured to practice Wednesday, leaving Jahmyr Gibbs as Detroit's top back and Craig Reynolds and recently signed Zonovan Knight as the depth guys. Gibbs figures to get most of the playing time if Montgomery doesn't play this Sunday against Atlanta, with Reynolds likely subbing in for some carries and perhaps a target or two.

Coach Dan Campbell said Monday that Montgomery (thigh) is day-to-day, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery said after Sunday's overtime loss to the Seahawks that he expects to need "a couple weeks" to fully recover from his bruised thigh, but Campbell offers a more optimistic timetable. It may be that Montgomery is day-to-day in terms of actual game-time availability, meaning he could be on the field Week 3 versus the Falcons, but that truly getting back to full health will require more time. If Montgomery needs to miss any time, or is limited when on the field, rookie backfield mate Jahmyr Gibbs will have a path to increased touches.

May face multi-week recovery
Montgomery (thigh) said it will take him "a couple weeks" to get fully healthy after being forced out of Sunday's 37-31 overtime loss to the Seahawks late in the third quarter, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Dan Campbell said Montgomery sustained a bruised thigh. It remains to be seen whether the veteran running back will be able to play partially through the injury before returning to full strength, or whether he could be facing a multi-game absence in order to get right. In either scenario, the Lions will figure to lean more heavily on rookie first-round pick Jahmyr Gibbs out of the backfield beginning Week 3 versus the Falcons, with Craig Reynolds also potentially handling an expanded depth role.

Has thigh bruise
Coach Dan Campbell said Montgomery sustained a bruised thigh during Sunday's 37-31 overtime loss to the Seahawks, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Prior to his departure late in the third quarter, Montgomery had 16 carries for 67 yards and one touchdown, one seven-yard catch and a lost fumble. Campbell relayed that the Lions will have more information on the running back Monday, likely after Montgomery undergoes a battery of tests. If Montgomery is forced to miss any time, his replacement in Detroit's backfield will be rookie Jahmyr Gibbs, who notched 14 touches for 56 yards from scrimmage Sunday.

Scores before leaving injured
Montgomery (thigh) rushed 16 times for 67 yards and a touchdown but lost a fumble in Sunday's 37-31 overtime loss to the Seahawks. He also caught his only target for seven yards but was subsequently carted off after being injured late in the third quarter.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery turned the ball over on Detroit's first play of the second half. After having a touchdown reception negated on the next drive, he still finished that series with a four-yard score to atone for his mistake. His next time out, though, Montgomery was twisted awkwardly after making a catch, forcing him to exit the game and not return. While it was another productive performance prior to his departure, Montgomery's status going forward is now uncertain. If he's limited or unavailable, rookie first-rounder Jahmyr Gibbs would figure to benefit from increased usage.

Has thigh injury
Montgomery sustained a thigh injury during Sunday's game versus the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery required a cart to get to the locker room after his right leg was twisted up by a Seattle defender at the end of a seven-yard reception. While the nature of the injury is confirmed, it remains to be seen if he'll be able to return. In the meantime, rookie first-round pick Jahmyr Gibbs will lead the Lions backfield.
Sep 17, 2023
Carted off Sunday
Montgomery (right leg) was carted to the locker room during Sunday's game against the Seahawks, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery got his right leg twisted up by a Seattle defender at the end of a seven-yard catch late in the third quarter. The nature of the injury isn't known, but he had 16 carries for 67 yards and one touchdown and the aforementioned reception at the time of his departure. Rookie Jahmyr Gibbs will take over the Lions backfield.
Sep 8, 2023
Handles 21 carries
Montgomery rushed 21 times for 74 yards with one touchdown but was not targeted in the passing game during Thursday's 21-20 victory over the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
Even though Montgomery's efficiency does not jump off the page, his usage does. In fact, offseason expectations for Montgomery to step into the role Jamaal Williams thrived within last year do not seem misplaced, and Montgomery could be in store for a big season in standard fantasy formats thanks to a prominent role near the goal line. However, it should be noted that first-round rookie Jahmyr Gibbs only saw nine touches after Lions coaches openly admitted that Gibbs wouldn't see a full workload out of the game, and Montgomery probably won't see many passes come his way as long as his counterpart is in commission. Next up for the Lions' ground game is a Week 2 matchup against a Seahawks defense that looks more susceptible on the ground than through the air.
Sep 7, 2023
Should inherit goal-line role
Montgomery is expected to take over as the Lions' goal-line running back in 2023 in addition to sharing work with Jahmyr Gibbs on early downs, Colton Pouncy of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Detroit opted to overhaul its running-back room this offseason, bringing in Montgomery on a three-year, $18 million deal in free agency and selecting Gibbs in the first round of the draft while bidding adieu to Jamaal Williams in free agency and trading D'Andre Swift to Philadelphia. Montgomery will essentially be serving as the Williams replacement, a role that could be fruitful after Williams led the NFL with 17 rushing touchdowns in 2022. While he shouldn't be expected to see nearly as many goal-line carries as Williams did a season ago nor cash in on those opportunities as frequently, Montgomery would be a worthy investment for fantasy managers if he can reach half of Williams' touchdown total from a year ago. And while the Lions envision the talented Gibbs holding a key role on offense right out of the gate, the coaching staff may take advantage of the rookie's pass-catching skills by deploying him in the slot as well as out of the backfield. As such, there may be scenarios where both Montgomery and Gibb

Healthy for camp
Montgomery (undisclosed) is participating in training camp, Mike O'Hara of detroitlions.com reports.
ANALYSIS
His undisclosed injury from spring practices apparently hasn't lingered into summer. Montgomery thus figures to get plenty of first-team reps throughout training camp, with the question being to what extent he shares that work with first-round pick Jahmyr Gibbs. It's a safe bet both enter Week 1 in significant roles, likely with Montgomery doing more of the rushing and Gibbs doing more of the receiving, though both are capable of beating a defense on the ground or through the air.

Dealing with minor injury
Coach Dan Campbell said Thursday that Montgomery (undisclosed) won't practice but isn't dealing with anything serious, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery departed from OTAs last week due to an undisclosed injury, and while a timetable for his return remains uncertain it doesn't look like the Lions are overly concerned. Heading into his age-26 season, Montgomery looks poised to handle a key role as a rusher for Detroit, though rookie first-round pick Jahmyr Gibbs should also see a fair share of carries while potentially commanding most of the backfield receiving work.
May 25, 2023
Exits practice early
Montgomery left Thursday's practice early due to injury, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery walked off the field and back to the locker room during Detroit's first open practice of the spring. There's no contact work at this point, so it's likely a muscular injury for Montgomery, who played 60 of a possible 66 games in four seasons with the Bears while topping 200 carries each year. He could see similar rushing workloads in Detroit, but it'll be tougher to get involved as a pass catcher after the Lions used the 12th overall pick on Jahmyr Gibbs, a 199-pound RB with 4.36 speed coming off three straight seasons at Alabama with at 303 receiving yards and multiple scores. Behind the obvious top two, Detroit's backfield holds Craig Reynolds, Jermar Jefferson, 2022 UDFA Greg Bell and 2023 UDFA Mohamed Ibrahim.

Joined by first-round rookie
Montgomery has new competition in the backfield after Detroit drafted RB Jahmyr Gibbs 12th overall Thursday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Birkett, along with many others, expects D'Andre Swift to be the odd man out in the Detroit backfield, given that Swift has one year remaining on his contract and has struggled to stay healthy throughout his pro career. Montgomery joined the Lions in March on a three-year, $18 million contract with $8.75 million guaranteed at signing, including his $1.25 base salary for 2023 and $3 million of his $5.25 million salary for 2024. He thus figures to be under contract for at least two years, and while Detroit's backfield looks crowded at the moment, Montgomery could end up with a workload split around 50/50 as the thunder to Gibbs' lightning if/when the Lions move on from Swift. To that end, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Friday morning that the Lions are already receiving trade calls for Swift.

Joining Detroit backfield
Montgomery has agreed to a three-year, $18 million contract with the Lions, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery is set to stay in the NFC North and join the Lions' backfield. His signing indicates Detroit is likely out on the Jamaal Williams' sweepstakes. Thus, the 25-year-old is presumably in line to split carries with D'Andre Swift. He saw the lightest workload of his four-year tenure in Chicago this past season, but still accumulated 801 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 201 carries to go along with 316 receiving yards and one touchdown on 34 receptions in 16 games.
Jan 8, 2023
Set for free agency
Montgomery rushed seven times for 21 yards in the Bears' 29-13 loss to the Vikings in Week 18, and ended the season with 201 carries for 801 yards and two touchdowns along with 34 receptions, 316 yards and another score over 16 games played.
ANALYSIS
In each of his four seasons, Montgomery has produced at least 1,074 scrimmage yards and six touchdowns. Over his career, he's rushed for less than four yards per carry, but he's handled at least 200 carries each season while missing just five games. He's also been solid as a receiver, having posted at least 301 yards in three straight seasons. Although he maintained his hold on the lead role in the backfield, Khalil Herbert cut into his workload and often appeared to be the more explosive runner. It's possible that Chicago lets Herbert take on the lead role in 2023 with Montgomery now an unrestricted free agent.
Jan 1, 2023
Disappointing production in defeat
Montgomery rushed five tomes for 24 yards and caught two passes for 12 yards in the Bears' 41-10 loss to the Lions on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Other than Justin Fields as a rusher, the Lions completely stymied the Bears offense, which included Montgomery. With Chicago struggling to convert many first downs once the first quarter was over, there was little opportunity for him to accumulate volume. He'll hope to end the year on a high note at home against the Vikings in Week 18.
Dec 24, 2022
Solid yardage total in loss
Montgomery rushed 16 times for 62 yards and caught four passes for 22 yards in the Bears' 35-13 loss to the Bills on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery had a touchdown called back on a holding penalty, which kept him from an even better performance. Even though Khalil Herbert returned to action after being on injured reserve, Montgomery has 16 carries to six for Herbert, as Montgomery still appears to have a handle on the lead role. He'll have a favorable matchup against a Lions defense that just gave up over 300 rushing yards to the Panthers last week.
Dec 23, 2022
Gets more competition in Week 16
Montgomery could face more competition for snaps out of the backfield Saturday against Buffalo with Chicago activating Khalil Herbert (hip) from injured reserve Friday, Larry Meyer of the Bears' official site reports. "The way guys can naturally bounce off of him I think is really cool," offensive coordinator Luke Getsy said of Herbert earlier this week. "What's nice, too, is it's a different type of back. I think there's a value in that, in having two different types of style runners like we're able to hav
ANALYSIS
While Herbert was sidelined for the past four games, Montgomery averaged 14.3 carries and four targets per contest, with both figures being marginally ahead of his season-long averages (13.2 carries, 2.5 targets). Herbert shouldn't be much of a threat to poach work from Montgomery on passing downs, but he'll likely earn more carries than the five per game that Darrynton Evans and Trestan Ebner combined for over the past four weeks. Even if the arrival of Herbert results in Montgomery forking over more snaps, there's a decent chance that both backs push for double-double digit touches against the Bills. Saturday's forecast in Chicago calls for sustained winds around 20 to 25 miles per hour as well as temperatures around 10 degrees Fahrenheit, which could prompt both teams to largely eschew intermediate and deep passes and favor the ground game more heavily.
Dec 18, 2022
Scores twice in Week 15 loss
Montgomery rushed 12 times for 53 yards and a touchdown while catching all three of his targets for 38 yards and another touchdown in Sunday's 25-20 loss to the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery scampered into the end zone from nine yards out in the second quarter to give the Bears a surprising 6-3 lead. He found the end zone again on a 10-yard catch in the third. Quarterback Justin Fields led the Bears with 95 rushing yards, but Montgomery was just one catch and one receiving yard short of Cole Kmet's and Byron Pringle's respective team-high totals. With Khalil Herbert (hip) potentially eligible to return from injured reserve in Week 16 against the Bills, Montgomery could be back in a timeshare after occupying the lead back role for the duration of Herbert's absence.
Dec 16, 2022
Good to go
Montgomery (illness) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery and QB Justin Fields each missed only one practice with what seem to have been minor illnesses. They'll lead the Chicago rushing attack this Sunday against the NFC-leading Eagles, while the passing game appears more toothless than ever with Chase Claypool (knee) ruled out.
Dec 15, 2022
Held out of practice with illness
Montgomery didn't practice Thursday due to an illness.
ANALYSIS
While Montgomery's mid-week addition to the injury report isn't ideal, he'll still be in good shape to play Sunday against the Eagles if he can practice in some capacity Friday. The Bears haven't revealed the nature of his illness or its severity.
Dec 4, 2022
Scores in defeat
Montgomery rushed 14 times for 61 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 28-19 loss to the Packers. He also caught four of five targets for six yards.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery scored from seven yards in the second quarter to give him a fourth rushing touchdown on the campaign. While quarterback Justin Fields outgained him with 71 yards, including a 55-yard touchdown run, Montgomery turned in a solid performance as Chicago's lead tailback. He'll now gain some rest over the Bears' bye week prior to returning in Week 15 to face a tough Eagles defense.
Nov 27, 2022
Gets 17 touches in loss
Montgomery rushed 14 times for 79 yards and caught three of four targets for 34 yards in Sunday's 31-10 loss to the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery helped set up a field goal on the opening drive with a 26-yard catch and run. That was his biggest play on this slick Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium, but Montgomery churned out hard yards throughout to keep a Bears offense playing without Justin Fields (shoulder) in manageable third downs. Regardless of Fields' status for Week 13 against the Packers, Montgomery will be in line for plenty of touches.
Nov 20, 2022
Finds end zone in lead role
Montgomery rushed 17 times for 67 yards and a touchdown while catching all three of his targets for 54 yards in Sunday's 27-24 loss to the Falcons.
ANALYSIS
With Khalil Herbert (hip) on injured reserve, Montgomery operated as the workhorse in Chicago's backfield, though quarterback Justin Fields led the team in both rushing attempts (18) and rushing yards (85). Fields ran in a four-yard touchdown in the second quarter, but Montgomery scored one of his own from two yards out in the fourth to tie the score at 24 with 8:16 to go. Montgomery also led the Bears in receiving yards thanks to a 32-yard catch on the same drive as his rushing touchdown. Fields hurt his shoulder late in the game, and if the mobile quarterback is unavailable or limited as a result of the injury, Montgomery could see even more volume against the Jets in Week 12.
Nov 13, 2022
Quiet in Week 11 loss
Montgomery carried the ball nine times for 37 yards and caught his only target for seven yards in Sunday's 31-30 loss to the Lions.
ANALYSIS
With Justin Fields once again running wild, there wasn't a big workload available for Montgomery, and he failed to reach 50 scrimmage yards for the second straight game. Khalil Herbert suffered a hip injury late in the contest after gaining 57 yards on 10 carries, however, so Montgomery could have the running back touches to himself in Week 11 against the Falcons.
Nov 6, 2022
Paces backfield in carries
Montgomery rushed 14 times for 36 yards and brought in one of two targets for eight yards in the Bears' 35-32 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Despite having been the subject of trade rumors leading up to Tuesday's deadline, Montgomery ultimately stayed put in the Windy City and ended up pacing the Bears backfield in carries. Montgomery's workload on the ground actually doubled up that of backfield mate Khalil Herbert, and he was the only one of the two to see a target. Chicago's ground-game usage has been difficult to predict game to game, however, so it remains to be seen if the distribution will remain the same in a Week 10 home matchup versus the vulnerable Lions defense.
Oct 30, 2022
Inefficient on ground
Montgomery rushed 15 times for 53 yards and caught three passes for 22 yards In the Bears' 49-29 loss to the Cowboys on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery had one fewer carry than Khalil Herbert against Dallas. Since Week 2, Montgomery has not topped 15 carries in a game, and he's lost his grip on the undisputed lead backfield role in the last two games. He's posted between 62 and 80 scrimmage yards during those two games, so he's still demonstrating a solid scoring floor, but he'll need to hang onto at least a near-even split in work to retain his current level of productivity.
Oct 24, 2022
Narrowly leads backfield
Montgomery rushed the ball 15 times for 62 yards and a touchdown in Monday's 33-14 win over the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
The Bears' backfield came very close to an even split, as Montgomery only out-touched Khalil Herbert 15-13. Montgomery ran fairly effectively, though the majority of his production came early in the fourth quarter on a drive during which he tallied his longest rush of the day -- 12 yards -- and also found the end zone from one yard away. With the performance, Montgomery topped 60 rushing yards in a game for only the second time this season, and he appears to be headed for a split in workload with Herbert moving forward.
Oct 13, 2022
Solid night in loss
Montgomery rushed 15 times for 67 yards and brought in his only target for 13 yards in the Bears' 12-7 loss to the Commanders on Thursday night. He also recovered a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery was once again the clear lead back in the Bears' ground attack, although Khalil Herbert actually outgained him with 75 yards -- 64 of those coming on one run. Montgomery's contributions were much steadier, and the third-year back was appreciably more efficient than in his Week 5 return from an ankle injury (12 carries, 20 yards). He'll now have extra time to recover from a busy last four days, as Chicago won't return to action until a Week 7 Monday night road matchup against the Patriots on Oct. 24.
Oct 9, 2022
Productive in return
Montgomery rushed 12 times for 20 yards and a touchdown, and caught all four of his targets for 62 yards in Sunday's 27-22 loss to the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery returned from last week's injury absence to score his first touchdown of the campaign with a nine-yard rush during the second quarter. Despite his ankle limiting him during the practice week, Montgomery still led Chicago's backfield, with backup Khalil Herbert garnering just four carries for 11 yards. Furthermore, with help from a long gain of 30 yards, Montgomery paced the Bears through the air, contributing a strong all-around showing after his brief sideline stint.
Oct 9, 2022
Suiting up in Week 5
Montgomery (ankle) is listed as active Sunday in Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
Since making an early departure Week 3 against the Texans, Montgomery has missed one game and was unable to mix into drills until Thursday of Week 5 prep. He ended this week with back-to-back limited practices, seemingly setting himself up to return, and he indeed will be available Sunday. Montgomery's role is uncertain, though, especially after Khalil Herbert impressed in place of the former over the last seven quarters of play. On the season, Montgomery has reeled off 4.5 YPC on his 35 rushes and notched five catches (on six targets) for 38 yards, but he has yet to reach the end zone.
Oct 8, 2022
Optimism for Week 5 return
The Bears are optimistic Montgomery (ankle) will play Sunday against the Vikings, Dan Graziano of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery was ruled out for Week 4 and was listed with ankle and knee injuries, but he appears to have moved past the knee issue after only being listed with an ankle injury leading up to Week 5. The fourth-year running back logged limited sessions Thursday and Friday after not practicing Wednesday and appears in line to return to game action after missing just one contest. Regardless, fantasy managers should still confirm his status ahead of Sunday's 1:00 PM ET kickoff. It's possible the Bears ease Montgomery back into the mix while they continue to get an extended look at Kahlil Herbert.
Oct 7, 2022
Questionable to face Vikings
Montgomery (ankle) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game in Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery was a limited practice participant Thursday and Friday, potentially setting up a game-time decision ahead of the 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff. Possibilities include Montgomery returning but in a less dominant role, after Khalil Herbert again proved himself to be one of the better backup RBs in the league the past two weeks. The Bears have Trestan Ebner to spell Herbert if Montgomery missed a second straight game after spraining his ankle early in the Week 3 contest.
Oct 6, 2022
Limited in return to practice
Montgomery (ankle) practiced in a limited capacity Thursday.
ANALYSIS
This marks Montgomery's first on-field work since injury his right ankle Week 3 against the Texans. It remains to be seen if he'll make enough progress to return to action Sunday at Minnesota, but Friday's practice report may be telling for his availability. If Montgomery is limited or out this weekend, Khalil Herbert would be the main beneficiary in the Bears backfield, with Trestan Ebner on hand for touches as well.
Oct 5, 2022
DNP on Wednesday
Montgomery (ankle) was a non-participant at Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery didn't practice last week due to knee and ankle injuries on his right leg before sitting out the Bears' eventual Week 4 loss to the Giants. This time around, he's only listed with an ankle issue, but it still is keeping him out of drills. Montgomery will have two more chances to get on the field this week, at which point the team may make a ruling on his availability for Sunday's game at Minnesota. If Montgomery requires another absence this weekend, Khalil Herbert will be the primary beneficiary out of the backfield, with rookie sixth-round pick Trestan Ebner available for any lingering touches.
Sep 30, 2022
Out this week
Montgomery (ankle/knee) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery hasn't practiced since his early exit from the Week 3 win over Houston. His departure set up a career-best showing from Khalil Herbert, who is inferior to Montgomery as a blocker and receiver but arguably superior as a pure runner. Trestan Ebner took over the backup role after Montgomery's departure last week, while Darrynton Evans could be called up from the practice squad before Sunday. Herbert figures to start and get the bulk of carries.
Sep 29, 2022
Sidelined for another practice
Montgomery (ankle/knee) was a non-participant in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Sidelined for the second practice in a row, Montgomery is looking uncertain to play in Sunday's game against the Giants while he manages the two lower-body injuries. Unless Montgomery is able to get in some on-field work Friday, he'll likely sit out the Week 4 contest, which would pave the way for Khalil Herbert to take on a workhorse role out of the Chicago backfield.
Sep 28, 2022
DNP on Wednesday
Montgomery (ankle/knee) didn't take part in practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery exited this past Sunday's win against the Texans in the first half, leaving him with a paltry three carries for 11 yards and no targets. Afterward, coach Matt Eberflus termed Montgomery "day-to-day," and he repeated those exact words Wednesday, according to Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic. Montgomery will have two more sessions to make an appearance this week before the Bears potentially give him a designation for Sunday's contest at the Giants. If Montgomery is limited or sidelined this weekend, Khalil Herbert again will get work in the Chicago backfield, which amounted to 22 touches for 169 yards from scrimmage and two rushing TDs in Week 3 in place of Montgomery.
Sep 25, 2022
Day-to-day per coach
Coach Matt Eberflus said Montgomery (knee/ankle) is day-to-day after exiting early in Sunday's 23-20 win over the Texans, Courtney Cronin of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Eberflus described Montgomery's day-to-day label as a positive development after he was deemed doubtful to return during the game. Khalil Herbert rushed for 157 yards and two touchdowns after replacing Montgomery, so Herbert has likely earned a more significant portion of the workload in Chicago's run-heavy offense moving forward, even if Montgomery's ready to return as soon as Week 4 against the Giants.
Sep 25, 2022
Exits Sunday's game
Montgomery was forced out of Sunday's game against the Texans with a knee/ankle injury, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Prior to his exit from the contest, Montgomery carried three times for 11 yards. In his absence, Khalil Herbert is next up for the Bears' backfield touches, with Trestan Ebner in reserve.
Sep 25, 2022
Injures leg Sunday
Montgomery suffered an apparent injury to his lower right leg during Sunday's game against the Texans, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery remained on the turf during the Bears' second drive of the game and eventually required assistance from team trainers to get to the sideline. He paid a visit to the sideline tent and eventually went to the locker room, but the nature of his health concern isn't known. Khalil Herbert entered the contest in Montgomery's place.
Sep 18, 2022
Racks up 136 scrimmage yards
Montgomery rushed 15 times for 122 yards and caught both of his targets for 14 yards in Sunday's 27-10 loss to Green Bay.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery struggled to get going in sloppy Week 1 conditions, but he was remarkably efficient in this one considering Chicago's passing game didn't present a credible threat to the defense, as Justin Fields threw for just 70 yards. Khalil Herbert got just five touches in this one, so Montgomery's still the clear lead back for the Bears. Montgomery's role as the focal point of Chicago's run-heavy offense has him well positioned for a strong Week 3 performance against the Texans.
Sep 11, 2022
Inefficient in victory
Montgomery rushed 17 times for 26 yards and caught three passes for 24 yards in the Bears' 19-10 win over the 49ers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Not only did Montgomery have a difficult matchup while running behind a revamped offensive line, but he played on a rain-soaked field that limited both offenses. Unlike last year, he didn't completely dominate carries, as Khalil Herbert had nine rushing attempts while scoring a rushing touchdown. We'll learn if the backfield split is going to be a trend when the Bears travel to Green Bay next week.
Aug 27, 2022
Plays in preseason finale
Montgomery (undisclosed) ran for 28 yards on nine carries in Chicago's preseason game against Cleveland on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery's undisclosed issue seems to be of minimal concern at this point, or else it would be odd for Chicago to give him nine carries in this game. Khalil Herbert looks like a competent backup to Montgomery, but Montgomery should be the lead man in a run-heavy Bears offense in 2022.
Aug 23, 2022
Saturday status uncertain
Montgomery (undisclosed) will have his status for Saturday's game against the Browns determined based upon how he does at practice, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery dealt with his undisclosed injury two weeks ago, and he returned to the practice field Monday. If he can suit up for the final preseason game, it would give him a strong chance of being ready for the regular season opener.
Aug 21, 2022
Not expected to play Saturday
Montgomery (undisclosed) and the Chicago starters are unlikely to play Saturday against Cleveland, Alyssa Barbieri of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery is currently day-to-day with an undisclosed injury, but the Bears' aren't expected to play their starters in the last preseason game. Assuming that's the case, as long as he's recovered from his undisclosed injury, he'll play next in Week 1 against the 49ers.
Aug 18, 2022
Not slated to play Thursday
Montgomery was not in uniform for warmups ahead of Thursday's preseason game against the Seahawks, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
With Montgomery not in line to play Thursday, the Bears will have a chance to evaluate the players behind him on the depth chart, with RB slotting/touches behind Montgomery and Khalil Herbert up for grabs ahead of Week 1.
Aug 16, 2022
Thursday status uncertain
Montgomery (undisclosed) would likely see six-to-10 plays in Thursday's game against the Seahawks if he's able to take the field Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery missed last week's game, but he did return to practice Monday, though his status has yet to be updated for Thursday. Should he play, coach Matt Eberflus said that some guys will get 20 plays, so his playing time could vary.
Aug 11, 2022
Considered day-to-day
Montgomery is day-to-day with an unspecified injury and isn't likely to play in Saturday's preseason game against the Chiefs, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery's absence could free up more snaps for backup Khalil Herbert, who may or may not be headed for a larger role under a new coaching staff. Montgomery played 75 percent of snaps in his active games last year, but Herbert did solid work in relief when Monty missed time, running for 344 yards at a clip of 4.4 YPC in a four-game stretch Weeks 5-8. While his rookie year was otherwise quiet, Herbert at least did enough to have a safe lead over Darrynton Evans and Trestan Ebner for Chicago's No. 2 RB role. A shot at something more may depend on Montgomery's performance or health.

Seeing special-teams reps
Montgomery has been playing both running back and special teams during practice, Kevin Fishbain and Adam Jahns of The Athletic report.
ANALYSIS
After being a three-down back when healthy over the last few years, it was unusual to see Montgomery practicing on kick returns. Although this may not mean that his running back role is in question, it at least has to be considered a possibility that he could share some of his running back role with Khalil Herbert.

Could trade carries for targets?
New Bears coach Matt Eberflus believes Montgomery has the skills to thrive as a pass catcher, but it is possible the running back shares more carries with his backups under offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, who comes from a Green Bay system that utilizes multiple backs, ESPN.com's Courtney Cronin reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery played 74.3 percent of snaps in his active games in 2020 and 74.6 percent in 2021, while Packers RB Aaron Jones has never gone higher than 61.5 percent. Of course, Getsy was the QBs coach and then pass-game coordinator in Green Bay, making it unlikely he had much say in the RB usage. Even so, there's a good case for giving Montgomery a little more rest this year, after backup Khalil Herbert averaged 86 rushing yards per game in a four-week stretch last October. A knee sprain caused Montgomery to multiple games for the first time, and he didn't have much luck on the ground thereafter, averaging 3.5 YPC and 60 rushing yards per game over the final nine weeks. He did average four catches per game in the same stretch, essentially returning to his 2020 level of receiving involvement after seeing limited chances early in the year (six catches over the first four weeks). He comes with many of the same drawbacks under a new coaching staff, namely the likelihood of being stuck in a poor offense, though it i

Heavy volume in season finale
Montgomery rushed 20 times for 72 yards in the Bears' 31-17 Week 18 loss to the Vikings, and he ended the season with 225 carries for 849 yards and seven touchdowns in addition to 42 receptions for 301 yards.
ANALYSIS
After posting a career high 4.3 yards per carry in 2020, Montgomery fell below four yards per carry as he did in his rookie season back in 2019. Regardless, he averaged 20 touches per game, and he has an excellent chance at retaining lead-back duties in 2022, though Khalil Herbert may be able to eat into a portion of his work. Based on his career production, he'll likely be projected as a top-18 running back in 2022 fantasy drafts. Montgomery will enter the last year of his rookie deal before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2023.
Jan 2, 2022
Scores twice in victory
Montgomery rushed 22 times for 64 yards and two touchdowns while adding two receptions for 17 yards in the Bears' 29-3 win over the Giants on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
In a game the Bears controlled throughout, Montgomery was used to control the clock on the ground, though he was unable to break a run longer than 10 yards on the day. However, he took advantage of his opportunities at the goal line by scoring a pair of touchdowns. After posting at least 80 combined yards in each of his last five games, he remain a high-floor fantasy option in the season finale at Minnesota in Week 18.
Dec 26, 2021
Heavy volume in win
Montgomery rushed 21 times for 45 yards and a touchdown and caught seven passes for 61 yards in the Bears' 25-24 win over the Seahawks on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
With Seattle loading up to stop the run, Montgomery found very little room to operate, but in leading the team in rushing attempts and targets, his volume allowed him to surpass 100 yards from scrimmage. He could've had a bigger day, but on one drive, he was unable to turn a rushing attempt and target from near the goal line into an additional score. He'll have an excellent matchup against the Giants next week in which he should be a top-15 option at running back.
Dec 20, 2021
Solid yardage total in loss
Montgomery rushed 18 times for 60 yards and caught five passes for 23 yards in the Bears' 17-9 loss to the Vikings on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery had a number of successful runs up the middle early in the game, but with the Bears going with a run-heavy approach, the Vikings began to place the focus of the defense on him, resulting in a number of runs for no gain or lost yardage. With Chicago largely unable to move the ball consistently, Montgomery had no chances to carry the ball near the end zone. Although he'll have a couple tough upcoming matchups against the Seahawks and Giants, his volume as both a runner and receiver ensures he'll be a strong option in the fantasy playoffs.
Dec 17, 2021
Overcomes illness
Montgomery (illness) was a full participant in Friday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery was one of eight Bears who didn't take part in Thursday's walk-through session on account of an illness. All but one of those players returned to the field Friday as full participants, temporarily alleviating some concern about a team-wide COVID-19 breakout. With that in mind, Montgomery looks poised to handle his usual three-down role Monday against the Vikings.
Dec 16, 2021
Comes down with illness
Montgomery didn't take part in Thursday's walkthrough due to an illness.
ANALYSIS
On the same day in which Chicago placed five players, including top wide receiver Allen Robinson (undisclosed), on the reserve/COVID-19 list, Montgomery was among eight Bears who were non-participants due to illness. Montgomery will have two more chances to mix into drills during Week 15 prep before the team potentially tags him with a designation for Monday's game against the Vikings.
Dec 13, 2021
Totals 81 yards in loss
Montgomery (shoulder/groin/glute) rushed 10 times for 42 yards and notched six receptions (seven targets) for 39 yards in Sunday's 45-30 loss to Green Bay.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery left his dominant performance last week (141 total yards and a touchdown) with some battle scars, but he still produced well despite an unfavorable game script in the second half. When healthy, the 24-year-old is the Bears' most-consistent offensive weapon, but Chicago's inability to produce leads puts a cap on what the running back can do in certain matchups. Montgomery has a favorable matchup against the Vikings next Monday (19.1 fantasy points allowed to opposing RBs this season) if the Bears can keep the score close.
Dec 10, 2021
Cleared to face Packers
Montgomery (shoulder/groin/glute) has been removed from the injury report and will play in Sunday's game against the Packers.
ANALYSIS
It's no surprise he's nicked up after taking 29 touches for 142 yards and a TD in the loss to Arizona on Sunday but Montgomery closed out the week with a full practice and thus figures to be ready for another large workload this Sunday with the Bears desperately hanging on at the bottom of the NFC wild-card race. That said, Montgomery is unlikely to approach last week's total of nine targets with Justin Fields sliding back in for Andy Dalton (doubtful/wrist) under center.
Dec 9, 2021
Puts in limited practice
Montgomery (shoulder/groin/glute) was a limited practice participant Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery's absence Wednesday may have been maintenance-related due to the array of health concerns he's dealing with at the moment. On a positive note, he got back on the practice field Thursday and now has one more chance to prove his health ahead of Sunday's game at Green Bay. Whether or not Montgomery enters the weekend with a designation will be revealed on Friday's injury report.
Dec 8, 2021
Tending to trio of injuries
Montgomery didn't practice Wednesday due to shoulder, groin and glute injuries.
ANALYSIS
Since missing four games earlier this season due to a knee sprain, Montgomery has been injury-free for exactly one month but now is dealing with a trio of health concerns. As a result, his listing bears watching on the Bears' final two practice reports of Week 14 prep to see if he may be trending toward another absence. While suiting up in each of the past four contests, he's averaged 19.8 touches for 90.5 yards from scrimmage per game while scoring one rushing TD.
Dec 5, 2021
Offensive centerpiece
Montgomery rushed 21 times for 91 yards and a touchdown while posting eight receptions for 51 yards in the Bears' 33-22 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
With the Arizona pass rush giving Andy Dalton very little time to throw, Montgomery led the Bears with nine targets, and he was effective as both a runner and receiver in a tough matchup. After failing to surpass 80 total yards while not scoring over his last three games, he recorded his highest yardage total of the season, and his weekly volume ensures he'll be a top-20 running back the rest of the way.
Nov 25, 2021
Modest numbers against Lions
Montgomery carried the ball 17 times for 46 yards and caught all three of his targets for 28 yards in a 16-14 win over the Lions on Thanksgiving.
ANALYSIS
The performance was a far cry from his 106-yard, two-TD effort when the NFC North rivals met back in Week 4, but Montgomery still led the Bears in rushing. He's gone three games without finding the end zone since returning to the lineup from a knee injury, a slump he'll look to snap in Week 13 against the Cardinals.
Nov 21, 2021
Efficient performance
Montgomery rushed 14 times for 58 yards and caught his only target for nine yards in the Bears' 16-13 loss to the Ravens on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery had most of his production in the first half, but despite playing in a close game throughout, the Bears chose to go with a pass-heavy approach that kept his volume in check. Regardless, he handled 15 of the 16 touches by the Chicago running backs, and he should continue to retain one of the highest snap shares by a running back in the league, and he'll likely continue to function as a very high-floor fantasy option each week.
Nov 8, 2021
Gets 15 touches in return
Montgomery rushed 13 times for 63 yards and caught both of his targets for 17 yards in Monday night's 29-27 loss to the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery returned from a four-game absence to lead Chicago's backfield with some tough running. The tailback ripped off a game-long rush of 21 yards and also sprinkled in a couple receptions, totaling a respectable 15 touches for 80 yards on the night. Meanwhile, with Montgomery returning, rookie Khalil Herbert managed just four rushes for 13 yards, including just one second-half carry. With the Bears now entering their bye week, Montgomery should be fresh when he next takes the field in Week 11 versus the Ravens.
Nov 8, 2021
Officially cleared for Monday night
The Bears reinstated Montgomery (knee) from injured reserve ahead of Monday's game in Pittsburgh, Larry Mayer of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
After missing four straight games due to the knee sprain he sustained Oct. 3, Montgomery was designated to return from IR on Thursday and turned in a strong week of practice, according to head coach Matt Nagy. Though Nagy didn't go into specifics regarding what Montgomery's workload will look like in his first game in more than a month, the 24-year-old is expected to displace Khalil Herbert as the Bears' lead back and see the bulk of the team's carries Monday, per Adam Hoge of NBC Sports Chicago. Montgomery totaled 358 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns through Chicago's first four games of the season.
Nov 8, 2021
Expected to face Steelers
The Bears are expected to activate Montgomery (knee) from IR in time for him to suit up versus the Steelers on Monday Night Football, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery hasn't played since Week 4 due to a knee sprain, but he appears to be trending toward a return to the field Week 9. The Bears have not yet, however, made such a transaction official. Rookie Khalil Herbert impressed as Chicago's lead back while Montgomery was sidelined, so it's possible that he remains a notable factor even if the the Week 1 starter does return to action. However, Damien Williams (knee) has already been ruled out.
Nov 6, 2021
Trending towards playing Monday
Bears coach Matt Nagy said "there's a really good chance" Montgomery (knee), who is currently designated to return from injured reserve, will play in Monday's contest against the Steelers, Adam Hoge of NBC Sports Chicago reports.
ANALYSIS
This is going to be a difficult situation for fantasy managers considering the Bears don't need to activate Montgomery off injured reserve until later in the afternoon Sunday. It's a bit surprising the star running back is even considered possibly available for Monday's contest given the Bears will have their bye take place in Week 10, theoretically giving the 24-year-old an ample amount of time to recovery from his scary Week 4 knee injury, but this does fit nicely with the reported four-week recovery timeline. It's also worth noting primary backup Damien Williams (knee) has already been ruled out ahead of Monday's contest. Regardless of whether or not Montgomery plays, expect rookie Khalil Herbert to be a factor at least somewhat given his impressive figures as Montgomery's fill-in (388 total yards across four games).
Nov 4, 2021
Returns to practice
Bears head coach Matt Nagy confirmed Thursday that Montgomery (knee) has been designated to return from injured reserve, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The move clears Montgomery to return to practice and gives the Bears a 21-day window in which they can either add him to back to the 53-man roster or keep him on injured reserve for the remainder of the season. Since Montgomery hasn't been on the field since suffering a left knee sprain Oct. 3, he could be a limited participant in his return to practice. The Bears will track his progress in practice over the next three days before determining whether he'll be ready to go for Monday's game in Pittsburgh, but if Montgomery remains on IR for another week, Khalil Herbert and Damien Williams (knee) -- if healthy -- will share backfield duties for Chicago.
Oct 9, 2021
Lands on IR
Montgomery (knee) has been placed on IR by the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Following Montgomery's Week 4 knee injury, reports suggested that a multi-week absence was likely and his placement on IR ensures that the running back will miss at least three games. In his absence, Damien Williams is poised to head Chicago's backfield for the time being, with rookie sixth-rounder Khalil Herbert also a candidate to see his role grow in the coming weeks, while Ryan Nall is on hand for Sunday's game against the Raiders after being elevated from the team's practice squad.
Oct 6, 2021
Will "miss time" with knee sprain
Coach Matt Nagy said Montgomery will "miss some time" with a knee sprain, Larry Mayer of the Bears' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Nagy didn't get into timeline specifics, but ESPN's Dan Graziano reported Tuesday that Montgomery likely would miss four or five weeks. With Nagy confirming that his starting running back will miss time, the Bears have Damien Williams (thigh bruise) and Khalil Herbert as backfield options on the active roster for Week 5 at Las Vegas. They also have Artavis Pierce and Ryan Nall on the practice squad, while Tarik Cohen (knee) is on the PUP list through at least Week 6.
Oct 5, 2021
To miss multiple weeks?
Montgomery (knee) is reportedly nursing a sprain that is expected to sideline him 4-to-5 weeks, Dan Graziano of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Bears aren't expected to offer an official update on Montgomery's health until Wednesday, but early test results at least appear to indicate that he's avoided a season-ending issue. If a recovery timetable between four and five weeks is indeed accurate, Montgomery will likely end up recording a stint on IR. Damien Williams appears the favorite to lead Chicago's backfield in the meantime, as long as he can manage to play through his thigh bruise. The Bears also have rookie Khalil Herbert around to pick up some slack, with a road matchup against the Raiders on deck for Week 5.
Oct 4, 2021
Injury update coming Wednesday
The Bears do not plan to offer an update about the health of Montgomery (knee) until after Wednesday's first official practice of the week, Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Early reports are optimistic that Montgomery has avoided a torn ACL, instead suggesting that he suffered a hyperextended left knee during Sunday's divisional win over the Lions. However, the standout running back is still undergoing medical testing, and an official update on his health won't come for a few days. Backup Damien Williams also picked up a bruised thigh during Sunday's win, though the injury may not keep him from suiting up at Las Vegas in Week 5, while rookie Khalil Herbert remains at full health.
Oct 4, 2021
Likely avoids ACL, needs more tests
The Bears believe Montgomery (knee) avoided an ACL tear, but they still need more testing Monday to determine the extent of his injury, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery left in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 24-14 win over the Lions, with post-game reports suggesting he'd suffered a hyperextension of his left knee. The mere mention of an ACL will make fantasy managers nervous, even if it's a report that he's believed to have avoided said injury. In any case, the Bears have Damien Williams and Khalil Herbert as reserve options in their backfield, though Montgomery has taken nearly all the carries this year. The Bears play at Las Vegas in Week 5.
Oct 3, 2021
To undergo MRI on Monday
Montgomery is slated to have an MRI on his left knee Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
At the time Montgomery departed Sunday's 24-14 win against the Lions, he had 23 carries for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Initial tests have revealed that he suffered a hyperextension, but the upcoming MRI may provide further clarity about the severity and potential absence. If Montgomery is forced to miss time, veteran Damien Williams should take over lead-back duties for the Bears, with rookie Khalil Herbert available for complementary work.
Oct 3, 2021
Likely knee injury
Montgomery suffered a left knee injury during the fourth quarter of Sunday's game against the Lions, Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery was in visible discomfort while the training staff tended to his leg, and he later needed assistance to get off the field and to the locker room, according to Adam Jahns of The Athletic. The severity of the injury hasn't been revealed, but if he's unable to return he'll end the game with 23 carries for 106 yards and two touchdowns.
Sep 26, 2021
Receives 12 touches in loss
Montgomery rushed 10 times for 34 yards and caught two passes for 21 yards in the Bears' 26-6 loss to the Browns on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
With the Bears unable to sustain any consistent offense, Montgomery was the only Chicago player to post more than 27 yards from scrimmage, and this is likely one of the worst fantasy performances he'll have all season. He'll have a great chance to get back on track in a much more favorable home matchup against the Lions in Week 5.
Sep 19, 2021
Sees heavy volume
Montgomery rushed 20 times for 61 yards and caught three passes for 18 yards in the Bears' 20-17 win over the Bengals on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery was unable to pick up chunks of yardage on most of his runs, which contributed to the Bears not sustaining many long drives. After ceding significant work to Damien Williams last week, the backup only had four touches this week, and with 40 touches over the first two weeks of the season, Montgomery will continue to be an excellent weekly fantasy option based on talent and usage.
Sep 12, 2021
Strong showing in losing effort
Montgomery rushed 16 times for 108 yards and a touchdown while hauling in his lone reception for 10 more yards in Sunday's 34-14 loss to the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery was the only Chicago player on offense to have any sort of success against a stout Rams defense. In fact, he did most of his damage in the first half before a one-sided game script forced the Bears to begin airing it out. Montgomery did see the lion's share of carries as expected -- with Damien Williams (six carries) being the only other back to run the ball -- so higher-volume games could be in store if the Bears can keep games closer. The Bengals are on tap for Montgomery and the Bears next Sunday.
Aug 21, 2021
Sits out second preseason game
Montgomery did not play in Saturday's preseason game against the Bills, Larry Mayer of the Bears' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery overcame an undisclosed injury to return to practice earlier in the week, though the team decided to play it safe with its workhorse back. Damien Williams worked as the primary back in Montgomery's place and carried the ball five times for eight yards. It remains to be seen whether Montgomery will get touches in the team's final preseason game against Tennessee, though the focus will be on him maintaining his health for the regular season.
Aug 27, 2020
Out for 2-4 weeks
Montgomery (groin) is expected to be out for 2-4 weeks, giving him a shot to be ready for Chicago's season opener against Detroit, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
With the opener two an a half weeks away, this timeline suggests Montgomery is more likely to miss the game than suit up. He suffered a groin strain Wednesday, slipping on the practice field while taking a hand-off from Mitchell Trubisky. Initial reports stirred up fear of a knee ligament injury, but it turned out to be something much less serious, albeit still a threat to Montgomery's Week 1 availability. The Bears don't have much depth in their backfield, with passing-down specialist Tarik Cohen joined by Ryan Nall and undrafted rookie Artavis Pierce. Nall was with the team last season, but he played only eight snaps on offense and 137 on special teams. The Bears likely will sign another runner by the end of the week.
Aug 26, 2020
Suffers groin strain
Coach Matt Nagy relayed that Montgomery, who suffered a groin strain Wednesday, is undergoing further testing to assess the injury, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
There's been conflicting reports about whether the running back was carted off the field Wednesday, but Adam Jahns of The Athletic adds context to that point by noting that Montgomery "left the practice field under his own power, was evaluated and was then carted to Halas Hall." Meanwhile, Adam Hoge of NBC Sports Chicago suggests that when the Bears practice on the back field of their facility, "pretty much anyone with an injury is going to get carted back to the building because it's a decent walk." In any case, this remains a situation to monitor, but for now Montgomery's situation appears less serious than initially feared, after he slipped and fell during Wednesday's practice.
Aug 26, 2020
Initial diagnosis promising
Initial tests suggest Montgomery suffered a groin strain during Wednesday's practice, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery went to the ground without contact and was then carted off the field, leading to immediate speculation regarding the possibility of a major knee injury. Fortunately, the second wave of reports is far more promising than the first, with Adam Schefter of ESPN also suggesting Montgomery avoided a knee injury, and adding that the Bears are optimistic as they await results from more tests. It seems Montgomery escaped the worst-case scenario of a torn knee ligament, but that doesn't necessarily mean he won't miss some time.
Aug 26, 2020
Possible serious injury
Montgomery left Wednesday's practice early with "what looked like a significant (leg) injury," Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the running back was carted off the field following a non-contact injury. Next up on the Bears' running back depth chart is Tarik Cohen, but if Montgomery is forced to miss time we'd expect the team to add backfield depth in short order.
Aug 23, 2020
Leaner and faster
Montgomery shed six pounds in the offseason and looks noticeably quicker on the practice field, Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Although Montgomery ran for just 3.7 yards per carry as a rookie, the offensive line frequently failed to open holes for him, and he often ran on obvious running downs against stacked boxes. Unless a line that wasn't addressed in the offseason takes a big step forward, it'll be difficult for Montgomery to show massive improvement. However, he's the unquestioned leader for early-down work, and his expected volume indicates he offers a stable floor for a player being drafted outside the top-24 running backs in average drafts.
Aug 14, 2020
High hopes for Year 2
Montgomery anticipates taking a big step forward this season, Colleen Kane of The Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery believes improved knowledge of Matt Nagy's playbook will help him perform better, and running backs coach Charles London says the second-year pro can make more of an impact in the passing game. It's basically the same stuff we hear with every young running back, but there is reason to think Montgomery will best last year's ugly mark of 3.7 YPC if the Chicago offense as a whole isn't so brutal. On the other hand, Tarik Cohen remains locked in for a significant pass-catching role out of the backfield, and even a decent-sized improvement would leave the Chicago offense closer to mediocre than good.
Nov 18, 2019
Does little with 15 touches
Montgomery (ankle) carried the ball 14 times for 31 yards and caught one pass (three targets) for 19 yards in Sunday's 17-7 loss to the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery was a game-time decision after rolling his ankle at practice earlier this week, but he was able to suit up and lead the team in carries. Unfortunately for his fantasy owners, the rookie was unable to do much against the Rams' stout interior defensive line, and he may have also been feeling the affects of the balky ankle. Despite the dud, Montgomery has been averaging 18 carries over his last four contests, and he will have a chance to feast against the Giants -- who allow 122.7 rushing yards per game -- on Sunday.
Nov 17, 2019
Available Week 11
Montgomery (ankle) is active for Sunday's game against the Rams at L.A., Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery rolled his ankle at Wednesday's practice, inducing the Bears to hold him out Thursday before he returned Friday as a limited participant. Considered a game-time decision by coach Matt Nagy, Montgomery must have appeased the team's medical and training staffs enough to get the all-clear. It's unclear if Montgomery will handle his typical workload, but Tarik Cohen and Ryan Nall are on hand in the event he cannot.
Nov 15, 2019
Headed for game-time call
Montgomery (ankle) will be a game-time decision Sunday night against the Rams, Nathan Smith of the Bears' official website reports. "It was good to get him back out there and just kind of see where he's at," said coach Matt Nagy after Friday's practice. "He's gonna end up being a game-time decision for us."
ANALYSIS
Montgomery was held out of Thursday's practice after he injured his ankle Wednesday. The return to a limited session Friday sets him up as truly questionable, with Tarik Cohen and Ryan Nall the alternate options in Chicago's backfield. An 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff creates issues for fantasy managers, and there's no assurance of a full workload even if Montgomery ends up playing. It's a brutal matchup in any case, with the Rams limiting RBs to 3.6 yards per carry (fourth-best) and allowing the 10th-fewest fantasy points to the position.
Nov 15, 2019
Deemed questionable for SNF
Montgomery (ankle) returned to practice Friday as a limited participant and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Rams, Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
This has all the makings of a frustrating situation for fantasy managers, with Montgomery appearing truly questionable for a Sunday night game. He was listed as a limited participant Wednesday when he initially hurt his ankle during practice, before downgrading to DNP on Thursday. The return to a limited session Friday suggests he has a real chance to play, with Tarik Cohen and Ryan Nall on hand in the event of an absence. The Bears waived Mike Davis last week, eating some dead cap money in order to recoup a fourth-round compensatory draft pick.
Nov 14, 2019
DNP on Thursday
Montgomery (ankle) didn't practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery made a surprise appearance on the Bears' first Week 11 injury report as a limited participant. The reason become clear Thursday, when coach Matt Nagy relayed Montgomery "lightly" rolled his ankle at Wednesday's session, per Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune. As a result, Montgomery's lack of reps Thursday is concerning, giving him just one more chance to get in some work before the weekend. If he's limited or even absent Sunday against the Rams in L.A., Tarik Cohen and Ryan Nall are next up for work out of the Bears' backfield.
Nov 14, 2019
Week 11 status in question
Coach Matt Nagy said that Montgomery "lightly" rolled an ankle during Wednesday's practice, leaving the running back's availability uncertain for this weekend's game against the Rams, Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Nagy's comments provide an explanation for why Montgomery was surprisingly listed as a limited participant Wednesday in the Bears' first practice of the week. It's uncertain whether the rookie will be able to resume practicing Thursday and/or Friday, but his ability to bounce back from the ankle sprain over the next couple of days will likely have significant sway on his status for the weekend. If Montgomery -- who has played at least 60 percent of the offensive snaps in each of the last three weeks while garnering 17-plus touches on every occasion -- is limited or sidelined against the Rams, Tarik Cohen and Ryan Nall would be in store for heightened roles in the backfield.
Nov 13, 2019
Limited by ankle issue
Montgomery was limited at Wednesday's practice due to an ankle injury.
ANALYSIS
Since seeing a season-low four touches Week 7 against the Saints, Montgomery has bounced back over the last three games, racking up 65 touches for 283 yards and three TDs. With the lead role locked down ahead of change-of-pace back Tarik Cohen, Montgomery has become the most consistent option in the Bears offense, but the aforementioned health concern could throw a wrench into that development.
