Roschon Johnson Injury News & Updates
Keep up with the latest injuries from the Steelers vs Bears game on Sunday with our National Football League injury report.Nov 7, 2025
Cleared for return
Johnson (back) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Johnson is ready to return from a two-game absence but may mostly be limited to special teams. No. 2 running back Kyle Monangai (ankle) avoided an injury designation, while starter D'Andre Swift (groin) is listed as questionable but seems likely to play.
Nov 6, 2025
Limited again Thursday
Johnson (back) was limited in practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has now logged back-to-back limited practices in preparation for Sunday's game against the Giants. A back injury has caused the reserve running back to sit out Chicago's last two games. If cleared to return versus New York, Johnson will handle a depth role behind D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai.
Nov 5, 2025
Limited practice Wednesday
Johnson (back) was a limited participant at practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has missed the team's last two contests while nursing a back injury, but his ability to return to practice Wednesday is a step in the right direction. The running back will have two more chances to log a full session prior to Sunday's matchup with the Giants.
Oct 31, 2025
Will not face Cincinnati
Johnson (back) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Bengals, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson will join D'Andre Swift (groin) on the sidelines for this one, leaving Kyle Monangai and Travis Homer as the lone healthy running backs currently on the 53-man roster. Brittain Brown is on the practice squad as a likely elevation for Week 9.
Oct 30, 2025
Remains sidelined Thursday
Johnson (back) remained a non-participant at practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson hasn't practiced or played since Week 7 against the Saints. Even on the off chance he recovers in time to suit up Sunday against the Bengals, Johnson would likely remain in a depth role behind D'Andre Swift (groin) and Kyle Monangai.
Oct 29, 2025
Still not practicing
Johnson (back) did not practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson missed the Bears' Week 8 loss with the same back injury, and it's not a positive sign that he was unable to take the field Wednesday. He'll likely need to increase his activity Thursday to have a chance to return in Week 9 against the Bengals.
Oct 24, 2025
Won't play in Week 8
Johnson (back) has been ruled out ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
The third-year back from Texas didn't practice all week after likely sustaining a back injury in the Week 7 win over the Saints, so it's no surprise that he'll be sidelined Sunday. With Johnson out, the only Bears running backs without injury designations heading into the Week 8 contest are Kyle Monangai and Travis Homer.
Oct 23, 2025
Misses practice again
Johnson (back) did not practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has now missed back-to-back practices, making his status uncertain for Sunday's road game against the Ravens. He suited up for Chicago's last five regular-season games but only handled two carries (for 17 yards) across that span, so if Johnson misses time it shouldn't have a notable impact on the workloads of D'Andre Swift (groin) and Kyle Monangai. If Johnson can't go, Travis Homer will figure to act as the Bears' third-string running back.
Oct 22, 2025
Dealing with back issue
Johnson was a non-participant in practice Wednesday due to a back injury.
ANALYSIS
This is the first word of Johnson dealing with an injury, though he may have picked it up in Sunday's win over New Orleans. The veteran running back has had minimal usage on offense with just four snaps so far this season, though he's a regular contributor on special teams. Should Johnson be sidelined for Week 8 against Baltimore on Sunday, Travis Homer would likely work as Chicago's No. 3 RB behind D'Andre Swift (groin) and Kyle Monangai.
Oct 19, 2025
Retains minimal usage
Johnson rushed once for 11 yards in the Bears' 26-14 win over the Saints on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has two rushing attempts while seeing offensive snaps in just two games this season. His lack of involvement leaves him with minimal fantasy value.
Oct 14, 2025
First rushing attempt of season
Johnson rushed once for six yards in the Bears' 25-24 win over the Commanders on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has one carry in 2025, keeping him off the fantasy radar outside of deep leagues.
Sep 14, 2025
Officially active
Johnson (foot) is active for Sunday's Week 2 matchup against the Lions.
ANALYSIS
Johnson missed the regular-season opener due to a foot injury, which allowed rookie Kyle Monangai to operate as the backup behind D'Andre Swift. Johnson returned to practice during Week 2 prep and didn't have an injury designation heading into Sunday, so he should be full-go against Detroit. However, Swift handled 81 percent of the offensive snaps against Minnesota, so there may not be many opportunities to go around, especially if Monangai remains part of the mix.
Sep 12, 2025
Cleared for return
Johnson (foot) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game at Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was a full practice participant Friday for the first time since early August. It's unclear what kind of role he'll have, if any, in the Chicago offense for Week 1. D'Andre Swift handled 81 percent share in Monday's loss to Minnesota but gained just 65 yards on his 20 touches.
Sep 11, 2025
Limited practice Thursday
Johnson (foot) practiced on a limited basis Thursday.
ANALYSIS
After having a cap on his reps at Wednesday's walkthrough, Johnson maintained that activity level one day later as he continues his recovery from a foot injury. Friday's practice report will reveal whether the Bears give him a chance to make his season debut Sunday at Detroit or otherwise rule him out for a second consecutive contest. Whenever he's healthy enough to suit up, he'll be in the mix for RB reps along with rookie seventh-round pick Kyle Monangai behind starter D'Andre Swift.
Sep 10, 2025
Another limited listing
Johnson (foot) was listed as limited on Wednesday's estimated injury report, Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson mustered just one limited practice last week prior to being inactive for Monday's loss to the Vikings. Considering he's kicking off Week 2 prep with a cap on his reps at Wednesday's walkthrough, he may be beginning to ramp up in anticipation of his season debut. If he's able to suit up Sunday in Detroit, Johnson will join rookie seventh-rounder Kyle Monangai as the backfield options behind starter D'Andre Swift.
Sep 8, 2025
Sitting out Week 1
Johnson (foot) is listed as inactive for Monday's game at Chicago.
ANALYSIS
Johnson followed up Thursday's listing of DNP on the Bears' practice estimate with no drills Friday before returning as a limited participant at Saturday's session. A foot issue has been bothering him since at least Aug. 7, but the team gave him a chance to suit up in the season opener. With Johnson's lack of availability confirmed for Week 1 action, rookie seventh-rounder Kyle Monangai will be the only active RB behind No. 1 option D'Andre Swift.
Sep 6, 2025
Officially questionable for Monday
Johnson (foot) is officially listed as questionable for Monday's game against the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Johnson missed Chicago's first two practices of the week due to a foot injury but upgraded to a limited session Saturday, which provides at least some optimism that he could be trending in the right direction for Week 1. Meanwhile, rookie Kyle Monangai has been cleared to play Monday night at home versus Minnesota, while starter D'Andre Swift has avoided the injury report entirely.
Sep 5, 2025
Not practicing yet
Johnson (foot) didn't practice Friday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was also listed as a non-participant on Thursday's practice estimate, putting his availability in doubt ahead of Monday's season opener against Minnesota. Fellow backup running back Kyle Monangai is listed as a limited participant this week, while starter D'Andre Swift isn't on the injury report at all. Things are trending toward a busy Monday night for Swift, albeit against a tough Vikings defense that held him to 109 yards on 32 carries (3.4 YPC) in two matchups last year.
Sep 4, 2025
DNP on estimated injury report
Johnson (foot) was listed as a non-participant on Thursday's practice estimate.
ANALYSIS
Johnson sat out the Bears' entire preseason slate due to a foot injury, and his listed DNP on Thursday may be an ominous sign for his availability Week 1 and potentially beyond that point. He'll have two more opportunities to mix into drills ahead of Monday's game against the Vikings, but even if he's able to suit up, he may remain a distant third for reps out of Chicago's backfield behind D'Andre Swift and rookie seventh-rounder Kyle Monangai (hamstring), the latter of whom was tagged as limited Thursday.
Aug 7, 2025
Nursing foot issue
Johnson (foot) is not participating in practice Thursday, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson's status now looks uncertain for Sunday's preseason opener against the Dolphins, though there's not yet any reason to suspect his foot injury is anything more than minor. Per Mark Carman of CHGO Bears and WGN Radio, Johnson spent Tuesday's practice mostly working in as a short-yardage specialist around the goal line. He appears to be facing real competition from rookie seventh-round pick Kyle Monangai for the No. 2 role behind D'Andre Swift.
Aug 6, 2025
Headed for specialized role?
Kyle Monangai got most of the second-team carries at Tuesday's practice, with Johnson then coming in at the goal line, Mark Carman of CHGO Bears and WGN Radio reports.
ANALYSIS
It could be a sign that new head coach Ben Johnson views Johnson as something of a specialist -- someone who can handle goal-line carries or passing-down snaps but isn't desirable as a ballcarrier in most situations. That's mostly how (Roschon) Johnson was used during his first two NFL seasons, but there was some thought he could take on a larger role after Chicago's backfield was exempt from the sweeping changes made to the offense this offseason. It seems Monangai is making a push to become the No. 2 ballcarrier behind incumbent starter D'Andre Swift.
Jan 5, 2025
Sparse usage in finale
Johnson rushed twice for three yards and brought in all five targets for 16 yards in the Bears' 24-22 win over the Packers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was once again a clear second fiddle to lead back D'Andre Swift, who logged 20 carries. The second-year pro had a relatively uneventful season despite the trade of Khalil Herbert to the Bengals, with the exception of a solid red-zone role that helped him score six rushing touchdowns. Johnson tallied just 150 rushing yards on 55 carries alongside a 16-104 receiving line over 14 regular-season games, and he's likely to head into training camp next summer in a similar, clear No. 2 role.
Dec 27, 2024
Four carries in low-scoring loss
Johnson rushed four times for five yards and wasn't targeted in Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was used in a change-of-pace role behind D'Andre Swift, whose 16 touches for 81 yards led the Bears in what was an abysmal showing by the entire offense. Swift's likely to lead the backfield once again when the Bears try to avoid ending the season on an 11-game losing streak in Week 18 against the Packers, leaving Johnson with limited fantasy upside.
Dec 22, 2024
One rushing attempt in loss
Johnson had a three-yard carry in the Bears' 34-17 loss to the Lions on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
After missing the last two games due to a concussion, Johnson touched the ball once as the backup to D'Andre Swift. Since Chicago's Week 8 bye, Johnson has posted 21 or fewer scrimmage yards in six of seven games. However, the veteran has found the end zone three times in the last seven games, making him a touchdown-or-bust option in the fantasy playoffs.
Dec 20, 2024
Clear for Week 16
Johnson (concussion) doesn't have a designation for Sunday's game against the Lions.
ANALYSIS
After missing the past two games while in the concussion protocol, Johnson was able to string together three consecutive full listings on the injury report this week, thereby clearing him to return to action. He'll play second fiddle to D'Andre Swift on Sunday, especially with Travis Homer (hamstring) being listed as doubtful for Week 16. On the season, Johnson has averaged 2.9 yards on his 48 carries, hauled in 11 of 15 targets for 88 yards and scored six rushing touchdowns in 11 games.
Dec 19, 2024
Another full listing
Johnson (concussion) was a full participant at Thursday's walkthrough.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has kicked off Week 16 with back-to-back full sessions, though the Bears have yet to announce that he's fully cleared the NFL's concussion protocol. The final step Johnson will have to progress through involves consultation with an independent neurologist. Johnson seems to be trending in the right direction for Sunday's divisional contest against the Lions, but he'll require full clearance in order to retake the field.
Dec 18, 2024
Practices in full
Johnson (concussion) was a full participant in Wednesday's walkthrough practice.
ANALYSIS
Johnson's participation level Wednesday is estimated, but it's nonetheless a good sign that he's made significant progress through the NFL's five-step concussion protocol. If Johnson can gain full clearance, including from an independent neurologist, in time for Sunday's game against the Lions, he will be in position to reclaim his backup role behind D'Andre Swift.
Dec 14, 2024
Out once again
Johnson (concussion) has been ruled out and will not play Monday against the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has now missed the past two contests due to a concussion suffered during the Thanksgiving game against the Lions. With D'Andre Swift (groin) once again questionable for the contest, Travis Homer and Darrynton Evans could see additional looks.
Dec 13, 2024
DNP again Friday
Johnson (concussion) remained sidelined for Friday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was concussed on Thanksgiving Day against the Lions in Week 13 and missed last week's loss to the 49ers. If he's unable to gain clearance for Monday night's game against the Vikings, Travis Homer (head) would be next up at running back. It's worth mentioning that D'Andre Swift (groin) has also missed practice Thursday and Friday. Darrynton Evans and Royce Freeman are on Chicago's practice squad.
Dec 12, 2024
Misses Thursday's walkthrough
Johnson (concussion) was a non-participant at Thursday's walkthrough.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has been a listed DNP since sustaining a concussion during a Thanksgiving day loss at Detroit, sitting out Week 14 at San Francisco so far. With no activity to speak of yet, he clearly hasn't made much progress through the protocol for head inuries. Meanwhile, fellow RB D'Andre Swift (groin) also was a non-participant Thursday, and Travis Homer (head) was listed as full. Consequently, the state of the Bears backfield remains in flux ahead of Monday's game in Minnesota.
Dec 6, 2024
Ruled out for Week 14
Johnson (concussion) is ruled out for Sunday's game against the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Johnson remains in the concussion protocol and hasn't yet practiced in any capacity. His next chance to suit up will come Week 15 against the Vikings, but Johnson will need to gain full clearance from the concussion protocol in order to do so. With Johnsons sidelined and D'Andre Swift (quadriceps) listed as questionable for Sunday's road matchup, Travis Homer and practice-squad member Darrynton Evans could be in line to handle key backfield roles for Chicago.
Dec 5, 2024
Still sidelined for practice
Johnson (concussion) didn't practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Both Johnson and D'Andre Swift (quadricep) were spectators for the second practice in a row, leaving the statuses of both of the team's top two running backs in question as Sunday's game at San Francisco approaches. If Johnson can't clear concussion protocol before the weekend and if Swift is forced to miss his first game of the season, the Bears would likely turn to Travis Homer and practice-squad member Darrynton Evans to take on most of the reps out of the backfield.
Dec 4, 2024
Listed as non-participant
Johnson (concussion) did not participate in Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was forced out of Thursday's divisional loss to the Lions due to a concussion, meaning he'll now need to fully clear the league's five-step protocol before being eligible to suit up for game action. With D'Andre Swift (quadriceps) not practicing Wednesday due to injury, special-teams ace Travis Homer will have an option to handle No. 1 practice reps, and potentially a key role on offense during Sunday's road matchup against the 49ers. Darrynton Evans will also be a candidate for elevation from the practice squad if one of Johnson or Swift can't go.
Nov 28, 2024
Concussion confirmed
Johnson won't return to Thursday's game in Detroit due to a concussion.
ANALYSIS
Late in the first half, Johnson was checked for a head injury, which now has been confirmed. He'll finish Week 13 action without a touch after recording a touchdown in back-to-back outings prior to Thursday's contest.
Nov 28, 2024
Getting concussion check
Johnson is under evaluation for a head injury during Thursday's game at Detroit.
ANALYSIS
To add insult to injury in a first half in which the Bears went three and out on each of their first three possessions, their No. 2 RB may soon enter the concussion protocol. Johnson didn't have a touch prior to exiting in the second quarter.
Nov 24, 2024
Scores another touchdown
Johnson rushed twice for two yards and a touchdown, and he caught a 10-yard pass in the Bears' 30-27 overtime loss to the Vikings on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson had a season-high 10 carries for 33 yards last week, but his workload reverted to the 1-3 carry level the running back had in Weeks 8-10. With an unpredictable weekly work load, the veteran is largely a TD-dependent fantasy option. On the season, Johnson has scored six rushing touchdowns.
Nov 17, 2024
Finds end zone
Johnson rushed 10 times for 33 yards and a touchdown while adding an eight-yard catch in the Bears' 20-19 loss to the Packers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
In Chicago's first game with new offensive coordinator Thomas Brown, the Bears emphasized the rushing attack by giving Johnson 10 of 24 running back carries. Coming into this game, Johnson had just 11 carries over his prior four games. If this usage pattern continues, Johnson's fantasy value will quickly rise.
Nov 10, 2024
Slight usage in defeat
Johnson lost four yards on one rush and caught a five-yard pass in the Bears' 19-3 loss to the Patriots on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
In the three games since Chicago's bye week, Johnson has handled nine touches for 28 yards and a touchdown. Unless the running back's role increases, Johnson will be difficult to trust in fantasy lineups.
Nov 3, 2024
Five touches in defeat
Johnson rushed three times for 13 yards and caught three passes for eight yards in the Bears' 29-9 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
After averaging 10 touches between Weeks 3 and 5, Johnson's role has been scaled back. In the last three games, the running back has handled a total of 12 touches for 60 yards and one touchdown. Johnson is likely to function in a low-volume role as long as D'Andre Swift continues to play well.
Oct 27, 2024
Finds end zone in defeat
Johnson rushed two times for six yards and a touchdown in the Bears' 18-15 loss to the Commanders on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson posted between 25 and 30 yards in Weeks 3 through 5. However, the veteran has rushed 7 times for 14 yards over Chicago's last two games. With D'Andre Swift playing at a high level, Johnson may have limited touches going forward.
Oct 13, 2024
Inefficient as runner in victory
Johnson rushed five times for eight yards and caught two passes for 25 yards in the Bears' 35-16 win over the Jaguars on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has handled between seven and 10 touches in each of the last three games. The running back has not rushed for four yards per carry in any game this season. Johnson will remain a TD-dependent fantasy option unless his role increases.
Oct 6, 2024
Scores twice in victory
Johnson rushed 10 times for 25 yards and two touchdowns in the Bears' 36-10 win over the Panthers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has been the clear change-of-pace runner behind D'Andre Swift since Week 3. During that time, the running back is averaging 10 touches, 34 yards and a touchdown. Although the yardage has been ordinary, the goal-line usage gives Johnson added fantasy value. If Swift happened to miss time, Johnson would likely see further expansion of his role in the offense.
Sep 29, 2024
Finds end zone in victory
Johnson rushed seven times for 26 yards and a touchdown in the Bears' 24-18 win over the Rams on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
After impressing in his first action of the year in Week 3, Johnson served as the clear No. 2 running back behind D'Andre Swift this week. With Swift having his best game of the season, Johnson may not push Swift for the lead role right now. However, Johnson may have done enough to retain change-of-pace duties with possible goal-line opportunities.
Sep 26, 2024
Role could expand Week 4
Johnson could be in store for an expanded role in Sunday's game against the Rams after accounting for 62 yards from scrimmage on 12 touches in the Bears' Week 3 loss to the Colts, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
While head coach Matt Eberflus hasn't said outright that Johnson has earned more opportunities, the second-year back made a compelling case to pick up extra snaps and touches on the heels of his Week 3 performance. He was a rare bright spot in a Chicago rushing attack that has struggled mightily on the whole through the first three games. Starter D'Andre Swift has been limited to just 1.8 yards per carry on 37 totes, while Khalil Herbert (eight carries for 16 yards) hasn't fared much better in a more limited sample. Johnson, meanwhile, was a healthy inactive Week 1 and was limited to a special-teams role Week 2 before he capitalized on his first offensive snaps of the season in Indianapolis. Heading into the Week 4 game, the Bears probably won't offer much clarity on how the backfield snaps will be distributed, but Johnson at least makes for an appealing speculative add in leagues where he's available on the waiver wire.
Sep 22, 2024
Leads Bears in Rushing
Johnson rushed eight times for 30 yards while catching four passes for 32 yards in the Bears' 21-16 loss to the Colts on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
With Travis Homer (finger) inactive, Johnson took advantage of his first offensive snaps of the season. Although D'Andre Swift led Johnson in touches by a 17-13 count, Johnson was clearly the more effective player. With Swift struggling to start the season, it remains to be seen if Johnson can carve out a larger role in the offense going forward.
Sep 8, 2024
Healthy scratch Sunday
Johnson (coach's decision) is listed as inactive Sunday versus the Titans.
ANALYSIS
The Bears placed a cap on Johnson's practice reps Wednesday and Thursday due to a toe injury, but after Friday's full session, he didn't carry a designation into the weekend. No matter, he won't be available to the Bears offense Week 1, leaving Khalil Herbert and Travis Homer as the reserve running backs behind D'Andre Swift. Johnson will turn his focus to making his season debut next Sunday at Houston.
Sep 6, 2024
Cleared for Week 1
Johnson (toe) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Titans.
ANALYSIS
Johnson missed a lot of practices and preseason games in August but isn't in any doubt for Week 1 after upgrading to full practice participation Friday. His role is less clear, as D'Andre Swift and Khalil Herbert figure to take most/all of the carries, and Swift may also be preferred over Johnson in passing situations.
Sep 5, 2024
Remains limited Thursday
Johnson (toe) remained limited in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Johnson missed the Bears' final three preseason games after appearing in the Hall of Fame game on Aug. 1. Even if Johnson is active for Sunday's Week 1 opener against the Titans, he appears to be firmly behind D'Andre Swift and Khalil Herbert on the backfield depth chart. Johnson has minimal redraft fantasy value at the moment.
Sep 4, 2024
Limited with toe injury
Johnson (toe) was a limited participant in practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
A toe injury might explain why Johnson didn't play in any preseason contests after the Hall of Fame Game. It's unclear what his role will be when healthy, but the limited practice participation suggests he at least stands some chance to play this Sunday against the Titans. D'Andre Swift is expected to lead Chicago's backfield, with Khalil Herbert subbing in for some carries, which could leave Johnson as a passing-down specialist or just totally out of the picture.
Aug 1, 2024
Starting RB in HOF Game
Johnson rushed six times for 24 yards and brought in his only target for seven yards in the Bears' 21-17 preseason win over the Texans on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
With offseason addition D'Andre Swift sitting out the preseason opener, Johnson got the call as the Bears' starting running back and gained 17 yards on four carries during Chicago's opening possession. The second-year pro went on to record his final seven rushing yards on the Bears' third and fourth drives after ceding the second possession to Khalil Herbert, who Johnson is battling for the No. 2 running back job. Considering the team invested a fourth-round pick in him last year and Johnson also showed upside as both runner and receiver as a rookie, he could have the inside track, although the remainder of training camp and preseason will serve as the platform for each back to make a case.
Jan 7, 2024
Light usage in season finale
Johnson rushed five times for 20 yards in the Bears' 17-9 loss to the Packers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
As a rookie, Johnson never had more than 10 rushes in a game. However, he was often used as a passing-down back, though he only had two games with more than four receptions. In 15 games played, Johnson rushed for 352 yards and two touchdowns to go with 209 receiving yards. During the offseason, the Bears will need to decide if the running back is ready to take on an expanded role, or if he'll remain as a passing-down specialist. Johnson has three years remaining on his rookie contract.
Jan 7, 2024
Clear No. 2 back in Week 18
Johnson is in line to serve as the Bears' unquestioned No. 2 back in Sunday's game against the Packers with D'Onta Foreman (coach's decision) declared inactive for the contest.
ANALYSIS
Johnson will therefore have a chance to finish his rookie season with what should be a solid workload behind top back Khalil Herbert. The 2023 fourth-round pick enters the finale with 332 rushing yards and two touchdowns, figures he's complemented with a 34-209 line through the air on 40 targets. Johnson has logged between five and nine carries and three and six targets over the last three games, playing at least 30 snaps in each of those contests.
Dec 31, 2023
Makes end-zone visit Sunday
Johnson tallied seven carries for 21 yards and one touchdown and hauled in all three targets for 38 yards during Sunday's 37-17 win versus the Falcons.
ANALYSIS
The Bears backfield again didn't have the services of D'Onta Foreman on Sunday, only this time he was a healthy scratch instead of out due to a personal issue like he was in Week 16. The absence allowed Khalil Herbert to pace Bears running backs with 20 touches for 129 yards from scrimmage and one touchdown, while Johnson got in the act, too, with a respective 10-59-1 line. This marked Johnson's third outing in a row with at least nine touches, a span in which he's had 31 touches for 172 total yards and one TD. At the moment, Herbert is the team's No. 1 RB, but Johnson appears to be his primary backup as long as Foreman isn't in pads on game day.
Dec 24, 2023
Modest output with Foreman out
Johnson contributed 37 yards on nine carries and hauled in all three targets for 16 yards during Sunday's 27-16 victory over the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
The Bears were without D'Onta Foreman in Week 16 due to a personal matter, but Khalil Herbert was the running back who benefitted from the absence. Herbert paced the backfield with 21 touches for 121 yards from scrimmage and a TD, which towered over Johnson's modest 12, 53 and zero, respectively. Perhaps Chicago's coaching staff prefers the rookie fourth-round pick to stay in a change-of-pace role, no matter who among the trio is available, but Johnson wasn't the primary beneficiary this time around. His outlook for the final two games of the campaign may not necessarily be tied to whether or not Foreman is able to suit up down the stretch.
Dec 17, 2023
Leads backfield in Week 15 loss
Johnson carried the ball five times for 36 yards and caught four of six targets for 24 yards in Sunday's 20-17 loss to the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Despite the modest volume, the rookie RB led the Bears' backfield in touches and scrimmage yards, as Khalil Herbert managed just 12 combined yards while D'Onta Foreman lost six yards on his six totes. Johnson could be Chicago's choice to head the committee the rest of the way as the team looks ahead to 2024, but the situation figures to be tough to predict from a fantasy perspective heading into a Week 16 clash with the Cardinals.
Dec 10, 2023
One touch in victory
Johnson had one carry for six yards in the Bears' 28-13 win over the Lions on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Before the Bears' Week 13 bye, Johnson led the Bears backfield with 74 percent of the snaps and 15 touches against Minnesota. It appears that his usage was game-plan specific against a Vikings defense that blitzed at a league-high rate. With D'Onta Foreman back from injury, Johnson saw his only touch in the latter stages of the game, when the outcome was determined. Based on his usage against Detroit, Johnson is looking like a risky fantasy option.
Nov 28, 2023
Outpaces Herbert in Week 12 win
Johnson rushed 10 times for 35 yards and brought in all five targets for 40 yards in the Bears' 12-10 win over the Vikings on Monday night. He also committed a fumble recovered by Chicago.
ANALYSIS
The rookie notably logged four more carries than Khalil Herbert despite entering the game No. 2 on the depth chart. Johnson also outpaced his teammate through the air, checking in third in receptions, receiving yards and targets on the night for Chicago. Both Johnson's rush attempts and receiving yards were new career highs, and it will be interesting to see how the division of labor in the Bears' ground attack breaks down in Week 14 against the Lions following the Week 13 bye, considering D'Onta Foreman (ankle) is likely to be factored back into the mix for that contest.
Nov 26, 2023
To work behind Herbert in Week 12
Herbert is slated to be the Bears' top complementary running back to Khalil Herbert on Monday in Minnesota after the team ruled out D'Onta Foreman (ankle/shin) for the contest Sunday, Larry Mayer of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has routinely acted as the No. 2 RB in Chicago's offense behind Herbert or Foreman, depending on who is healthy and available among the two. The result has been seven touches for 32 yards from scrimmage per game and one rushing TD in nine games. Expect a similar workload for Johnson on Monday in a secondary role behind Herbert.
Nov 19, 2023
Six carries as Foreman exits early
Johnson rushed six times for 30 yards and wasn't targeted in Sunday's 31-26 loss to the Lions.
ANALYSIS
Johnson had as many carries as D'Onta Foreman (ankle), who exited in the third quarter, but Khalil Herbert led the Bears with 16 rushing attempts after missing the previous five games due to a high-ankle sprain. Herbert had just 35 rushing yards, and between Herbert's inefficiency and the uncertainty over Foreman's availability, Johnson has a chance to see a larger workload in Week 12 against the Packers.
Nov 10, 2023
Targeted often in victory
Johnson rushed five times for 18 yards and caught four passes for 14 yards in the Bears' 16-13 win over the Panthers on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson continues to struggle with his opportunities, as he has gained 43 yards on 13 rushes while also being held to 33 yards on eight receptions over his last three games. The Chicago backfield may become more crowded in Week 11, when the team likely a activates Khalil Herbert (ankle) from injured reserve. If Johnson retains his pass-catching role, he could maintain the 1.85 receptions per game he's recorded since Week 2.
Nov 5, 2023
Light workload in loss
Johnson rushed twice for six yards and caught a nine-yard pass in the Bears' 24-17 loss to the Saints on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson saw the same amount of work as No. 3 running back, Darrynton Evans, while D'Onta Foreman dominated the backfield with 20 rushing attempts. Other than the game when Johnson was injured in Week 5, this was the first time he had fewer than six touches in a game. He also hasn't had 50 scrimmage yards in a game since Week 1, making Johnson a low-upside fantasy option.

Splits backfield work Sunday
Johnson (concussion) took six carries for 21 yards while catching three of four targets for 10 yards in Sunday's 30-13 loss to the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was able to pass the league's concussion protocol in time to suit up for Sunday's matchup against the Chargers. The 22-year-old wound up splitting touches with D'Onta Foreman, with neither player standing out over the other in the box score. This is shaping up to be a situation where both backs struggle to develop consistent value due to fluctuating usage from an indecisive coaching staff trying to salvage a season that is clearly heading the wrong direction for the Bears in 2023. For now, we have to assume another even split between Johnson and Foreman against the Saints next Sunday.
Oct 26, 2023
Out of concussion protocol
Johnson said Thursday that he cleared the concussion protocol and is ready to play in Sunday's road game against the Chargers, Chris Emma of 670TheScore.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Players in the protocol for head injuries aren't permitted to speak to the media, so Johnson's comments more or less pave the way for him to put an end to a two-game absence. His upcoming role is in some question, though, after D'Onta Foreman reeled off 187 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns over the last two games with Khalil Herbert (ankle, IR) sidelined. In five games this season, Johnson is averaging 4.9 yards on his 25 carries, has hauled in 11 of 12 targets for 58 yards and scored one rushing TD.
Oct 26, 2023
Another full practice
Johnson (concussion) practiced fully Thursday.
ANALYSIS
The uncapped session marks Johnson's second in a row, but it's unclear if he's passed through the final phase of the protocol for head injuries. On Wednesday, coach Matt Eberflus noted Johnson had "one more hurdle" to get past in order to see his first game action since sustaining a concussion Week 5 in Washington, per Chris Emma of 670TheScore.com. Having said that, the Bears may not indicate whether that has happened until they post their final practice report of Week 8 on Friday. If Johnson gains clearance to play Sunday at the Chargers, he may split the backfield reps with D'Onta Foreman with Khalil Herbert (ankle) still on injured reserve.
Oct 25, 2023
Full practice, still in protocol
Johnson (concussion) practiced in full Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
This week's on-field work marks Johnson's first since he suffered a concussion Oct. 5 at Washington. Coach Matt Eberflus told Chris Emma of 670TheScore.com earlier Wednesday that Johnson has "one more hurdle" to pass before he'll clear the protocol for head injuries, likely indicating that he needs to meet with an independent neurologist. Once that step is behind him, Johnson should be good to rejoin the Bears backfield, but considering D'Onta Foreman has put together 187 yards from scrimmage and three TDs over the last two games with Khalil Herbert (ankle) on IR, it's unclear what kind of workload will be available to Johnson.
Oct 25, 2023
Returning to practice
Coach Matt Eberflus said Wednesday that Johnson (concussion) will return to practice Wednesday but remains in the NFL's concussion protocol, Chris Emma of 670TheScore.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Eberflus said Monday that Johnson has "one more hurdle" remaining, so it's still not a lock that the 22-year-old rookie will managed to fully clear the NFL's five-step concussion protocol in time to suit up for Sunday's game against the Chargers. His only remaining steps may be to return to full-contact practice and then gain clearance from an independent neurologist, though, and retaking the practice field is a notable step in the right direction. D'Onta Foreman has looked impressive as the lead man in Chicago's backfield over the last two weeks, but Johnson could face notable opportunities Week 8 if he's able to gain clearance.
Oct 23, 2023
Could be back in action Week 8
Head coach Matt Eberflus said Monday that Johnson remains in concussion protocol, but the Bears are optimistic that the running back will play Week 8 against the Chargers, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Eberflus suggested that Johnson has one hurdle to clear before exiting the protocol, so the 22-year-old rookie may only need to return to a full-contact practice and receive the green light to play from an independent neurologist before being deemed good to go for this weekend. While both Johnson and Khalil Herbert (ankle) have been sidelined for the Bears' past two games, D'Onta Foreman has re-emerged as Chicago's lead runner, carrying 31 times for 154 yards and adding four catches for 33 yards while finding the end zone three times between Week 6 and 7. Herbert will remain on injured reserve for at least another two weeks, but if he's back in action this Sunday in Los Angeles, Johnson could challenge Foreman for the No. 1 role out of the backfield. At the very least, Johnson should be able to unseat Darrynton Evans as the top change-of-pace complement to Foreman after Evans averaged just 3.5 yards on 23 carries and two yards on four targets over the past two games.
Oct 20, 2023
Not playing in Week 7
Johnson (concussion) has been ruled out for Sunday's game versus the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has been in the concussion protocol for more than two weeks since being diagnosed with a head injury Thursday, Oct. 5 against the Commanders. He's yet to practice in the meantime, giving no indication of making progress through any of the five phases. With Johnson sidelined again and Khalil Herbert (ankle) on injured reserve, the Bears backfield will be composed of D'Onta Foreman, Travis Homer and Darrynton Evans in Week 7.
Oct 19, 2023
Misses practice again
Johnson (concussion) didn't practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson still hasn't practiced since suffering a concussion in Thursday night win over Washington in Week 5. Travis Homer, on the other hand, returned to full practice participation Thursday after missing last week's game with a hamstring injury. If Johnson can't play Sunday against the Raiders, it'll likely be D'Onta Foreman leading the rushing attack again while Homer and/or Darrynton Evans handle the obvious passing situations and perhaps some carries.
Oct 18, 2023
Not practicing yet
Johnson (concussion) isn't practicing Wednesday, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson hasn't practiced since suffering a concussion in a Thursday win over Washington in Week 5. He missed the Week 5 loss to Minnesota, in which D'Onta Foreman and Darrynton Evans got the backfield work while Johnson, Khalil Herbert (IR - high ankle) and Travis Homer (hamstring) all sat out. Another missed practice suggests Johnson is in danger of missing a second game this Sunday against Las Vegas.
Oct 13, 2023
Won't play this week
Johnson (concussion) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Vikings, Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
The Bears lost all three of their active RBs to injuries in last Thursday's 40-20 win over Washington, and all three will now be out for at least one week. With Khalil Herbert (high ankle) and Travis Homer (hamstring) sidelined, the Bears are down to D'Onta Foreman and Darrynton Evans as backfield options for an NFC West matchup this Sunday. None of the injured RBs practiced this week.
Oct 12, 2023
Spectator for Thursday's practice
Johnson (concussion) was a non-participant in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Johnson entered concussion protocol after he was removed from this past Thursday's 40-20 win over the Commanders and doesn't appear to have taken a notable step forward in his recovery from the brain injury just under a week later. With consecutive absences at practice to begin Week 6 prep, Johnson will likely need to mix into drills in some capacity Friday in addition to gaining clearance from an independent neurologist to have any chance at playing Sunday against the Vikings. Khalil Herbert (ankle) and Travis Homer (hamstring) have also been spectators for the Bears' first two Week 6 practices and appear to be trending toward absences Sunday, which likely leaves D'Onta Foreman on track to headline the Chicago backfield against the Vikings.
Oct 11, 2023
Not practicing yet
Johnson (concussion) was a non-participant at Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Johnson is six days removed from suffering a concussion last Thursday in Washington, so his lack of activity in the meantime is particularly concerning. All of Johnson, Khalil Herbert (ankle) and Travis Homer (hamstring) also didn't practice Wednesday, which leaves D'Onta Foreman, Darrynton Evans and Khari Blasingame as the Bears' current healthy running backs.
Oct 11, 2023
Still in concussion protocol
Johnson remains in concussion protocol Wednesday, Courtney Cronin of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson left last Thursday's win over Washington due to a concussion, and he remains in the NFL's concussion protocol nearly a week later. The rookie running back is fighting an uphill battle to suit up Sunday against the Vikings, and the Bears will likely be without Khalil Herbert (ankle) as well, so D'Onta Foreman could be in line to lead Chicago's backfield after being a healthy inactive for the team's last four games.
Oct 5, 2023
Ruled out from return
Johnson (concussion) has been ruled out for the rest of Thursday's game against the Commanders.
ANALYSIS
Johnson exited the game in the second quarter to be evaluated for a concussion. While there's been no official announcement about his diagnosis, Johnson will be out for the game after recording three rushes for 19 yards. He'll have nine days to recover prior to the Bears' Week 6 matchup against the Vikings.
Oct 5, 2023
Being evaluated for concussion
Johnson exited Thursday's game against the Commanders to be evaluated for a concussion.
ANALYSIS
Johnson exited midway through the second quarter. Prior to his exit, he had three carries for 19 yards. It's unclear if he'll be able to return.
Oct 1, 2023
Serves as clear No.2 runner
Johnson rushed five times for 13 yards and caught one pass for two yards in the Bears' 31-28 loss to the Broncos on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson is often used as the passing-game running back when the Bears trail, but since the team led until that latter stages of the game, he saw significantly less work than Khalil Herbert. Despite having light usage in this contest, Chicago figures to trail often this season, which should lead to Johnson seeing closer to 10 touches in a significant number of games.
Sep 24, 2023
First back used in loss
Johnson rushed eight times for 38 yards and caught both of his targets for 11 yards in a 41-10 loss to Kansas City on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson continued to split backfield work with Khalil Herbert (7-31-0) after usurping veteran D'Onta Foreman on the depth chart last week. The fourth-round rookie didn't finish with a gaudy stat line, but he was efficient when called upon (4.8 YPC). It is worth noting that he was the first back deployed Sunday, indicating his growing trust from a coaching staff looking for answers after an 0-3 start. It will be interesting to see if Johnson's role continues to increase as the season progresses. For now, he should continue to split work with Herbert against the Broncos next Sunday.
Sep 17, 2023
Works as Herbert's backup Sunday
Johnson rushed four times for 32 yards and brought in both targets for 10 yards in the Bears' 27-17 loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson elevated to the No. 2 role behind Khalil Herbert with D'Onta Foreman a healthy scratch, and the rookie did a solid job with his modest opportunities. The Texas product's overall performance seemingly didn't do anything to knock Johnson back down a peg on the depth chart, so he's likely to remain the main complementary option to Herbert in a Week 3 road battle against the Chiefs.
Sep 17, 2023
Headed for No. 2 role
Johnson is likely to serve as the top backup behind starting running back Khalil Herbert in Sunday's game against the Buccaneers with the Bears expected to make D'Onta Forearm a healthy inactive in Week 2, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was one of the few bright spots for the Bears in their 38-20 loss to the Packers in Week 1. Though most of his touches came in garbage time, Johnson still capitalized on his opportunities, carrying five times for 20 yards and a touchdown while turning seven targets into six receptions for 35 yards. The Bears apparently saw enough from the rookie fourth-round pick out of Texas to give him a look in the No. 2 role this week at the expense of Forearm, who gained just 24 yards on seven touches (five carries, two receptions) against Green Bay. Considering that Herbert doesn't have much of a track record as a lead back in the NFL, Johnson could have a chance to unseat atop the depth chart if he can continue to find success on the ground and as a pass catcher. Johnson may already be the Bears' preferred option over Herbert on passing downs, given that Herbert has recorded just 26 catches for 190 yards on 33 targets through 31 career games.
Sep 10, 2023
Scores in NFL debut
Johnson rushed five times for 20 yards and a touchdown and added six receptions for 35 yards in Sunday's 38-20 loss to the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Johnson saw significant work after the game was out of hand, and he found the end zone late in the fourth quarter. The rookie was also targeted seven times, which tied him for the team lead with Darnell Mooney and Cole Kmet. More may be learned about his long-term role in the offense next week, when the Bears will likely have a more competitive matchup when the travel to Tampa Bay.
Aug 20, 2023
Notches eight touches Saturday
Johnson turned seven carries into 32 yards and hauled in his only target for 11 yards during Saturday's 24-17 preseason loss in Indianapolis.
ANALYSIS
The Bears gave Khalil Herbert the night off Saturday, allowing D'Onta Foreman the first chance to lead the backfield. Once Johnson took over from Foreman in the second quarter, the rookie fourth-rounder outproduced the veteran in yards from scrimmage, 43-18, on four more touches. The breakdown of Chicago's RB room appears to be unsettled with just one exhibition to go, so Johnson's performance Saturday, Aug. 26 versus the Bills will be one to monitor ahead of Week 1.
Aug 12, 2023
Extensive playing time Saturday
Johnson ran for 44 yards on 12 carries in Chicago's preseason game against Tennessee on Saturday, adding three receptions for two yards on four targets.
ANALYSIS
Johnson saw the vast majority of his playing time in the second half, at which point he split some of the workload with Travis Homer. The Bears primarily used starter Khalil Herbert and free agent pickup D'Onta Foreman in the first half. Johnson's poor returns as a pass catcher can probably be ignored -- the targets he saw were low-quality targets that most running backs couldn't do anything with, either -- so it's arguably encouraging that he saw four targets while Herbert (1) and Foreman (zero) operated almost exclusively as runners. The Bears backfield appears headed to a committee approach in 2023, so all of Herbert, Foreman and Johnson could be involved at various points.
Aug 4, 2023
Returns in short order
Johnson (undisclosed) returned to practice Friday, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The injury was first reported Tuesday and kept Johnson sidelined for only a few days. The rookie fourth-round pick will now continue his effort to earn a role in a backfield that also includes Khalil Herbert, D'Onta Foreman and Travis Homer.
Aug 1, 2023
Dealing with injury
Coach Matt Eberflus said Tuesday that Johnson is tending to an undisclosed injury, Adam Jahns of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson sat out Tuesday's session and instead spent his time with the Bears' training staff. Any missed time in camp can be detrimental, especially for a rookie vying for a spot in a backfield in which the pecking order currently is up in the air. Fellow RBs Khalil Herbert and D'Onta Foreman have experience on their side, while Travis Homer likely is a superior pass catcher to the rookie fourth-round pick.
Apr 29, 2023
Headed north to Chicago
The Bears selected Johnson in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, 115th overall.
ANALYSIS
The Bears didn't have an obvious need at running back with Khalil Herbert and D'Onta Foreman atop the depth chart, but Johnson probably offers a better passing down skill set than the two veteran backs and could get his foot into the door on that basis. Johnson (6-feet, 219 pounds) has a three-down frame that's well-suited to blitz pickup, so he could emerge as the Bears' preferred hurryup and passing down back. Johnson is unlikely to match Herbert or Foreman as pure runners, however, so an unpredictable running back committee could be in store for the Bears offense.
