Thomas appears to be dealing with a calf injury suffered near the end of the Cowboys' Week 9 game against the Cardinals. The 30-year-old veteran was unable to practice Thursday in any capacity, despite coming off a Week 10 bye. Jay Toia could be in line for an increase in playing time with Thomas out.

While his tackle (31 to 26) and sack (5.0 to 3.5) totals declined from his 2023 campaign, he played 36 fewer defensive snaps this season and recorded more passes defended (two to one) and forced fumbles (one to zero) than in 2023. Thomas is now set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer after signing a one-year, $2.35 million deal with the Jets last offseason. If he remains with the Jets in 2025, he's likely to serve as one of the team's top reserve defensive linemen.

It wouldn't be surprising to see the 25-year-old surpass his career high of just three sacks despite seeing fewer snaps overall.

He will get one more season to change his perception before he hits free agency in 2021.

Thomas -- a former second-overall pick -- spent most of the season as a backup and situational interior rusher on third downs. The Stanford product was given a brief opportunity to show off his skills as an edge rusher when multiple defensive ends went down to injury mid-season, but he simply did not look comfortable in that role at all. San Francisco boasts the best defensive line in football, so Thomas should remain a backup even if the team does not bring Arik Armstead back this upcoming offseason.
