Quiet performance in OT win
Tagovailoa completed 14 of 20 passes for 171 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in the Dolphins' 16-13 overtime win over the Commanders in Madrid on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa's final line underscores the game manager role he played in the overseas win, one in which he withstood three sacks but still managed a solid 8.6 yards per attempt. The veteran signal-caller worked with a tight circle of five targets, and the fact he was able to remain turnover-free for only the second time in the last six games may have been as encouraging an aspect of his performance as any. Tagovailoa has thrown for under 200 yards in each of the last two contests heading into the Week 12 bye, but Miami has notably recorded victories in both contests.

Offsets picks with TDs in win
Tagovailoa completed 15 of 21 passes for 173 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions while adding two carries for minus-1 yard in the Dolphins' 30-13 win over the Bills on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa's pair of interceptions didn't lead to any Bills points, and he helped offset the miscues with touchdown tosses of nine- and 38 yards to Malik Washington and Jaylen Waddle in the first half. Tagovailoa didn't need to do much otherwise, as the Dolphins' defense put together a standout performance that led to the quarterback's fifth sub-200-yard tally of the season. The 2020 first-round pick does now have four multi-interception efforts this season, a troublesome trend he'll aim to avoid in a Week 11 overseas matchup against the Commanders in Madrid.

Can't produce points in loss
Tagovailoa completed 25 of 40 passes for 261 yards with no touchdowns and one interception while adding one rush for one yard in the Dolphins' 28-6 loss to the Ravens on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa's completion percentage and passing yardage numbers weren't objectionable from a fantasy standpoint, but his real-word impact on the Dolphins' offense was middling. To be fair, Tagovailoa was also victimized by a couple of fumbles -- the second by Malik Washington early in the fourth quarter on the Ravens' 11-yard line to short-circuit a 12-play, 81-yard drive -- as well as a missed field goal by Riley Patterson. Tagovailoa has now sandwiched a pair of games with zero touchdown passes around the four scoring tosses he recorded against the Falcons in Week 8, and he's up to a 11 interceptions on the campaign heading into a Week 10 home matchup against the Bills on Sunday, Nov. 9.
Oct 26, 2025
Outstanding in four-TD performance
Tagovailoa completed 20 of 26 passes for 205 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in the Dolphins' 34-10 win over the Falcons on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa came into the afternoon dealing with an illness that forced him onto the injury report early Sunday morning, but he and the Dolphins conquered heavy odds to deliver a completely unexpected comfortable victory. Tagovailoa tossed a season-high four touchdown passes, hitting running backs De'Von Achane and Ollie Gordon from three and 20 yards out, respectively, and sandwiching those throws around nine- and 43-yard scoring strikes to Malik Washington and Jaylen Waddle. This was a much-needed respite from both individual and team struggles for Tagovailoa and his teammates, but he'll have to turn around and face another talented defense in that of the Ravens during a Week 9 home matchup Thursday night.

Feeling ill, but will start
The Dolphins added Tagovailoa to their injury report due to an illness, but he has no designation for Sunday's game in Atlanta and is expected to start against the Falcons.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa was a full participant in practice throughout the week, but he may have fallen an ill at some point Friday or Saturday. In any case, whatever ailment Tagovailoa is dealing with won't prevent him from playing Sunday, though it's possible that he'll be operating at less than 100 percent health. The bout will the illness won't do Tagovailoa any favors as he looks to bounce back from a pair of poor showings in Week 6 and 7 losses to the Chargers and Browns, respectively, during which he completed 33 of 55 throws for 5.5 yards per attempt and a 1:6 TD:INT.
Oct 20, 2025
Remains starter for Week 8
Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said Monday that Tagovailoa will start on the road versus Atlanta on Sunday, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa was benched late in the fourth quarter of Miami's 31-6 loss to the Browns in Week 7, a matchup that saw the fifth-year pro succumb to adverse conditions and throw three interceptions with zero touchdowns and only 130 passing yards. He had previously also thrown three interceptions in the Dolphins' loss to the Chargers in Week 6. Rookie seventh-round pick Quinn Ewers didn't fare much better than Tagovailoa, as he nearly threw an INT on his first snap, fumbled two plays later, and ended the game with five completions for 53 yards on eight pass attempts. Now sitting at a 1-6 record, McDaniel and Tagovialoa may both be at risk of losing their positions if this team can't right the ship versus the Falcons, a task that will be all the more difficult with tight end Darren Waller (pectoral) looking unlikely to be available.
Oct 19, 2025
Another three picks in defeat
Tagovailoa completed 12 of 23 passes for 130 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions while adding three rushes for six yards in the Dolphins' 31-6 loss to the Browns on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The Dolphins' offense hit its nadir for the 2025 season to date in the lopsided defeat, and Tagovailoa's play stood out front and center. The sixth-year veteran's first interception of the day -- which resulted in a pick-six -- came on a deflection off De'Von Achane's hands, although Tagovailoa's throw was high and off target. The subsequent pair of picks came on back-to-back possessions in the fourth quarter, and head coach Mike McDaniel opted to bench the 2020 first-round pick after the second miscue. Tagovailoa came into the afternoon fresh off another three-interception tally at home versus the Chargers in Week 6, and it may be fair to question his hold on the starting job heading into a thorny Week 8 road matchup against a talented Falcons defense.
Oct 12, 2025
Plagued by turnovers in loss
Tagovailoa completed 21 of 32 passes for 205 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions while adding one carry for four yards in the Dolphins' 29-27 loss to the Chargers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa's turnover issues persisted in the narrow loss, although the last of his three interceptions came on a last-gasp play to close out the contest. The 2020 first-round pick's first two INTs were much more ill-timed, as Tagovailoa short-circuited drives at the Chargers' 39-yard line and his own 37, which led to 10 points for Los Angeles. Tagovailoa did lead Miami to two fourth-quarter touchdown drives and capped the second one off with a seven-yard scoring toss to Darren Waller with 46 seconds remaining, but he also undeniably played a direct part in the Dolphins falling to 1-5. Tagovailoa's Week 7 matchup is far from ideal in terms of his quest to atone for the turnover-fille performance, as a road trip to Cleveland to face the Browns' aggressive defense awaits.

Logs full practice Thursday
Tagovailoa (hip/left thumb) practiced fully Thursday, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
After being limited Wednesday, Tagovailoa's full participation a day later paves the way for him to be ready for Sunday's game against the Chargers, who have dropped two straight games. In terms of the issue with the left thumb on Tagovailoa's throwing hand, Furones previously noted that the QB didn't appeared to be hindered on short/intermediate throws during Thursday's session. With Tyreek Hill (knee) out for the season, Tagovailoa's top playmakers going forward figure to be WR Jaylen Waddle, RB De'Von Achane and TE Darren Waller.
Oct 8, 2025
Limited practice Wednesday
Tagovailoa (hip/left thumb) was limited at practice Wednesday, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa, who is coming off a 256-yard, three-TD effort in the Dolphins' 27-24 loss to the Panthers this past Sunday, is now managing two injury concerns ahead of this Sunday's contest against the Chargers. While so far there's nothing to suggest that the QB's Week 6 status is in any danger, Tagovailoa will likely need to practice fully by Friday in order to avoid carrying an injury designation into the weekend.
Oct 5, 2025
Three-TD day wasted Sunday
Tagovailoa completed 27 of 36 passes for 256 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions and added one rush for five yards in the Dolphins' 27-24 loss to the Panthers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa managed well in his first game without Tyreek Hill (IR, knee), focusing a majority of his attention, as expected, on the trio of Jaylen Waddle, Darren Waller and De'Von Achane. The three pass catchers were responsible for Tagovailoa's three TD tosses and 17 of his completions overall. The 2020 first-round pick has multiple touchdown passes in four straight games -- and Sunday's tally was a season high -- but with Miami at 1-4, the overall long-term outlook for the Dolphins as a whole is bleak. A Week 6 home matchup against the Chargers could be an uphill battle as well for the short-handed offensive unit as well, even when factoring in Los Angeles' struggles against the Commanders in Week 5.
Sep 29, 2025
Sharp in Week 4 win
Tagovailoa completed 17 of 25 passes for 177 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and added three rushes for six yards in the Dolphins' 27-21 win over the Jets on Monday night. He also committed a fumble recovered by Miami.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa put together a relatively tame stat line in terms of his yardage, but the 2020 first-round pick generated his third straight two-touchdown-pass tally with a pair of scoring tosses to the debuting Darren Waller. Tagovailoa did lose Tyreek Hill to a gruesome knee injury, however, so he could be challenged to consistently offer above-average fantasy production moving forward without his No. 1 target. Tagovailoa did demonstrate encouraging chemistry with Waller in their first game together and still has other speedy playmakers at his disposal, not to mention a favorable Week 5 road matchup against the Panthers on Sunday afternoon.
Sep 18, 2025
Critical INT seals another loss
Tagovailoa completed 22 of 34 passes for 146 yards with two touchdowns and one interception while adding two rushes for 10 yards in the Dolphins' 31-21 loss to the Bills on Thursday night. He also fumbled once but recovered.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa didn't come close to following up his 315-yard tally from Sunday's loss to the Patriots, although he did manage to throw multiple touchdown passes for the second straight contest. Tagovailoa connected with Jaylen Waddle (three yards) and Tyreek Hill (five yards) for his pair of scoring tosses Thursday, but his interception on what appeared to be a poor read at the Bills' 17-yard line with just over three minutes remaining ended up being the decisive play in Miami's third loss in as many games to open 2025. The 2020 first-round pick has now thrown for under 150 yards in two of the first three games of the season while also throwing at least one pick in each contest, depressing his fantasy stock heading into a Week 4 home matchup against the Jets on Monday night, Sept. 29.
Sep 14, 2025
Big numbers in close loss
Tagovailoa completed 26 of 32 passes for 315 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the Dolphins' 33-27 loss to the Patriots on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa and the Dolphins' offense as a whole were in dire straits over the first quarter-plus as the Patriots raced out to a 12-0 lead. Matters took a turn for the better in the second quarter when Tagovailoa hit Jaylen Waddle and De'Von Achane for touchdown passes of 18 and 29 yards, respectively. However, although Tagovailoa was able to compile some yardage in the second half, he wasn't able to lead Miami to anything other than a pair of field goals, as the Dolphins' other second-half points came from a Malik Washington 74-yard punt return touchdown. The Dolphins already have their backs against the wall at 0-2, making Thursday night's Week 3 road matchup against the Bills a critical early-season game for Tagovailoa and his teammates.
Sep 7, 2025
Forgettable performance in loss
Tagovailoa completed 14 of 23 passes for 114 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions while adding one rush for seven yards in the Dolphins' 33-8 loss to the Colts on Sunday. He also lost a fumble and threw a two-point conversion pass.
ANALYSIS
In a harbinger of the type of game it would be for the Dolphins' offense and Tagovailoa in particular, the 2020 first-round pick sailed a pass intended for Tyreek Hill very high on the opening drive, leading to an interception by Cameron Bynum. The veteran signal-caller then handed the ball to the Colts again on the next possession, losing a fumble recovered by former teammate Xavien Howard. Tagovailoa would go on to short-circuit another possession with a third-quarter interception in Indianapolis territory, and only his 11-yard touchdown pass to De'Von Achane and subsequent two-point conversion pass to Julian Hill in the fourth quarter gave the signal-caller's fantasy day any semblance of respectability. Tagovailoa's first opportunity for atonement comes in a Week 2 home matchup next Sunday against a Patriots defense that allowed 362 yards to the Raiders' Geno Smith in Week 1 while playing without Christian Gonzalez (hamstring).
Aug 23, 2025
Plays three drives
Tagovailoa completed four of eight passes for 49 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 14-6 preseason win over the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa made his preseason debut and led three offensive possessions, the final of which ended with a touchdown. Though Jaylen Waddle also played, Tagovailoa primarily targeted Malik Washington, who did the majority of the work on Tagovailoa's 25-yard touchdown pass. Most importantly, he came from the contest healthy and will be locked in as the starting quarterback for Miami's Week 1 matchup against the Colts.
Aug 21, 2025
Starters getting some run Saturday
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said Thursday he plans for Tagovailoa and Miami's starters to log some action during Saturday's preseason finale against the Jaguars, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
McDaniel said a decision on exactly how much the Dolphins' starters will play Saturday won't come until after joint practices with Jacksonville have concluded, but it doesn't sound as though Tagovailoa and company will be slated for more than a few series at best. Tagovailoa played one drive during Miami's preseason opener against the Bears, but he sat out the team's second exhibition matchup against Detroit. Tyreek Hill (oblique) and starting running back De'Von Achane (calf) don't appear in line to play Saturday.
Aug 15, 2025
Starters won't play Saturday
Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said Friday that he doesn't plan to play Tagovailoa and most starters during Saturday's preseason game against the Lions, David Furones of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa played one drive during Miami's preseason opener against the Bears, completing five of six passes for 27 yards, but he'll rest during the team's second exhibition matchup. Instead, backup Zach Wilson will get the start Saturday while rookie Quinn Ewers enters in relief. Jaylen Waddle returned to team drills this week, but top wideout Tyreek Hill (oblique) remained sidelined Thursday.
Aug 10, 2025
Plays one drive in preseason opener
Tagovailoa completed five of six passes for 27 yards in Sunday's 24-24 preseason tie against the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Despite playing without top two wide receivers Tyreek Hill (oblique) and Jaylen Waddle (undisclosed), Tagovailoa guided the offense down to the 1-yard line before the Dolphins turned it over on downs on his lone drive of the game. Staying healthy will be the top priority for the oft-injured quarterback this preseason, which continues for the Dolphins with a trip to Detroit on Saturday.
Aug 10, 2025
Available for preseason opener
Tagovailoa was suited up during pre-game warmups and will be available for Sunday's preseason opener against the Bears, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Zach Wilson and Quinn Ewers are also dressed. Tagovailoa will likely be limited to one or two series in Sunday's contest, and he will be without Tyreek Hill (oblique) and Jaylen Waddle, though De'Von Achane looks to be available. Tagovailoa is looking to bounce back from an injury-riddled 2024 campaign in which he completed 72.9 percent of his passes for 2,867 yards, 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions across 11 regular-season games.
Jun 4, 2025
Stepping up as team leader
Tagovailoa (hip) has been an active participant at OTAs and drawn praise from head coach Mike McDaniel for having "the most ownership of all the players on each and every down," Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa looked sharp throwing Tuesday despite rainy field conditions, per Chris Perkins of the South Florida Sun Sentinel, and he's displayed no lingering issues related to the hip injury that forced him to sit out the final two regular-season games of 2024. Now heading into Year 4 in McDaniel's offense, and with top wideouts Tyreek Hill (wrist) and Jaylen Waddle returning, the stage is set for Tagovailoa to hit the ground running in 2025, with excuses running out if this team again underperforms compared to expectation. In response to the concussion and hip injuries that partially derailed Tagovailoa in 2024, McDaniel deployed a new offensive philosophy prioritizing short-area targets to De'Veon Achane and Jonnu Smith at the expense of Hill and Waddle. One of the largest offseason questions for 2025 fantasy projections remains whether the Dolphins reprise a similar approach, which would help keep Tagovailoa from taking hits behind an already-poor offensive line that lost Terron Armstead to retirement, or
Jan 7, 2025
Hip injury not long-term concern
Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said Tuesday there's "no concern at all" about the long-term health of Tagovailoa (hip), who missed Miami's final two regular-season games, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa logged just 11 regular-season appearances in 2024, first due to a concussion sustained Week 2 which led to a stint on IR, and then due to a hip injury that forced him to miss the final two games of the year. The 26-year-old had expressed optimism about his ability to play if the Dolphins had made the playoffs, but he'll instead turn his attention toward returning to full health in time for OTAs. Grier offered optimism about Tagovailoa's ability to "still ascend" in the future, Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald reports, but he also expressed that the quarterback's injury history and propensity for missing time has negatively impacted Miami's ability to attain playoff success, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. Tagovailoa completed just 291 of 399 pass attempts for 2,867 yards, 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 2024, and with an eye toward 2025, it should be taken into account that the return of top wideout Tyreek Hill doesn't seem to be guaranteed.
Jan 5, 2025
Inactive Sunday
Tagovailoa (hip) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Jets.
ANALYSIS
After being deemed limited at practice this past week, Tagovailoa was listed as doubtful for the contest, a designation that aligned with head coach Mike McDaniel having noted Friday that it was "unlikely" the QB would see any action Sunday. With Tagovailoa officially inactive for the second straight week, Tyler Huntley will draw another start for the Dolphins who need a win (coupled with a Denver loss in Week 18) to qualify for the postseason. For his part, Tagovailoa has expressed confidence that he'll be available next week should the team make the playoffs, per Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN, indicating "if the cards play out the way they should and the way we know and think they can, I'm going to be available next week...no, ifs, ands or buts." That said, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network suggests that it's not a given Tagovailoa would be cleared by next weekend in such a scenario, considering the nature of the hip injury the signal caller is contending with.
Jan 5, 2025
Absence could extend into playoffs
Tagovailoa (hip) -- who remains listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Jets -- could also be at risk of missing a potential wild-card playoff contest if the Dolphins are able to clinch a postseason spot, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Tyler Huntley is tracking toward making a second straight start Sunday in place of Tagovailoa, whom Rapoport relays is tending to a unique hip injury that has "affected the surrounding muscles and therefore his strength and mobility." The hip issue would leave Tagovailoa vulnerable to further injury if he tries to play through it, which may put him at risk of missing the start of the playoffs if the Dolphins secure a spot with a win over the Jets plus a Broncos loss to the Chiefs. Tagovailoa initially injured his hip in a Week 15 loss to the Texans, and the injury worsened the following week in the Dolphins' win over the 49ers.
Jan 3, 2025
Listed as doubtful for Sunday
Tagovailoa (hip) is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game at the Jets, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa's listing on the Dolphins' final Week 18 practice report isn't a surprise after coach Mike McDaniel told Travis Wingfield of the team's official site on Friday that it's "unlikely that Tua will see any action" Sunday. McDaniel also spoke of Tagovailoa's particular injury. "I wouldn't say it's a bruise, but it's kind of a unique muscle issue as a result of the hip," McDaniel relayed to Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com. Assuming Tagovailoa is among Miami's list of inactives about 90 minutes before Sunday's 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff, as expected, Tyler Huntley will earn a second start in a row.
Jan 3, 2025
Unlikely to play Sunday
Head coach Mike McDaniel noted Friday that he sees "it as unlikely that (Tagovailoa/hip) will see any action" in Sunday's regular-season finale against the Jets, Travis Wingfield of the Dolphins' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
With that in mind, the Dolphins continue to prepare as though Tyler Huntley will start his second straight game at quarterback for the team. Per David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel, McDaniel relayed that Tagovailoa's hip injury is a "unique muscle issue," not a bruise. In any case, Friday's injury report will reveal the Week 18 game status of Tagovailoa, who has been listed as limited at practice this week.
Jan 2, 2025
Logs another limited practice
Tagovailoa (hip) remained limited at practice Thursday, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa, who was inactive for this past weekend's 20-3 win over the Browns, was also limited during Wednesday's session. Per Louis-Jacques, coach Mike McDaniel noted Wednesday that the Dolphins were preparing as though Tyler Huntley would draw the start for Sunday's must-win game against the Jets, while leaving open the possibility that things could potentially change on that front if Tagovailoa's hip feels better by the end of the week. In any case, Friday's final injury report is destined to reveal the QB's Week 18 game status.
Jan 1, 2025
Trending toward another missed start
As of Wednesday, head coach Mike McDaniel noted that the Dolphins are preparing as though Tyler Huntley will start Sunday against the Jets rather than Tagovailoa (hip), Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Per McDaniel, Tagovailoa will be a limited participant in practice Wednesday, and while a decision on the team's Week 18 starter at QB isn't final, at this stage it appears as though Huntley is trending toward starting his second straight game for Miami. The 8-8 Dolphins need a win on Sunday in order to have a chance of qualify for the playoffs.
Dec 30, 2024
Will get less practice reps than Huntley
Miami head coach Mike McDaniel stated Monday that Tyler Huntley will get more practice reps than Tagovailoa (hip) this week, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa missed Sunday's Week 17 win over the Browns due to a hip issue, and he appears more likely than not to sit out Sunday's Week 18 battle against the Jets as well. McDaniel mentioned Monday that the team is in a "gray area" with Tagovailoa moving forward because the star QB's "body did not cooperate" leading up to the Week 17 contest. The Dolphins need a win against the Jets on Sunday in order to have a chance of making the postseason.
Dec 29, 2024
Status uncertain for Week 18
Coach Mike McDaniel said after Sunday's 20-3 win over the Browns that Tagovailoa's (hip) status for Week 18 against the Jets is uncertain, per Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network, though McDaniel added that surgery isn't on the table.
ANALYSIS
Tyler Huntley kept Miami's faint playoff hopes afloat by putting on his best Tagovailoa impression against the Browns, completing 22 passes with only four incompletions and even showcasing his superior mobility with 52 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The Dolphins can make the playoffs with a win over the Jets and a Broncos loss in Week 18, so Tagovailoa will be motivated to play if possible, but his hip injury would need to improve during the week for that option to be on the table from a medical standpoint.
Dec 29, 2024
Inactive Sunday
Tagovailoa (hip) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa, who was initially deemed questionable for the contest after being listed as limited at practice this past week, was downgraded to doubtful Saturday, so it's not surprising that he's been made inactive Sunday. As a result, Tyler Huntley is slated to start in his place while being backed up by Skylar Thompson, a scenario that figures to hamper the Week 17 fantasy upside of Miami's available pass catchers.
Dec 28, 2024
Downgraded to doubtful
Tagovailoa (hip) has been downgraded to doubtful for Sunday's game against the Browns, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa, who was listed as limited on the Dolphins' practice reports this week, had been listed as questionable, but the downgrade to doubtful Saturday is obviously concerning with regard to his Week 17 status. Per Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network, if Tagovailoa is inactive versus Cleveland, Tyler Huntley would be in line to start in his place, backed up by Skylar Thompson.
Dec 27, 2024
Listed as questionable
Tagovailoa (hip) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game at Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
A limited practice participant throughout the week, Tagovailoa seems more likely than not to play, especially because Miami is still in the hunt for a wild-card spot. Still, fantasy managers should at least consider the possibility Tagoviloa lands on the inactive list ahead of Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff, in which case Tyler Huntley would step in as Miami's starting quarterback. Starting wideouts Tyreek Hill (wrist) and Jaylen Waddle (knee) also are listed as questionable, although Hill is in the same boat as Tagovailoa, i.e., it'll be a surprise if he doesn't play. Waddle is the one who appears truly questionable/uncertain, having missed the Week 16 win over San Francisco.
Dec 26, 2024
Gets limited practice tag
Tagovailoa (hip) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa's listing matches the limited tag he received Wednesday, when the Dolphins didn't hold a practice for the Christmas holiday but submitted an estimated report. The Dolphins haven't provided any indication that Tagovailoa's hip injury is anything that will seriously threaten his availability for Sunday's game in Cleveland, and with Miami still in the playoff picture in Week 17, the quarterback is fully expected to play, even if he's operating at less-than-full health.
Dec 25, 2024
Estimated as limited Wednesday
Tagovailoa (hip) was listed as limited on Wednesday's practice estimate, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa was limited this past Wednesday and Thursday, before working fully Friday and approaching the Dolphins' Week 16 win over the 49ers without an injury designation. With no reported setbacks for the QB since then, there's a decent chance he follows the same pattern ahead of Sunday's game against the Browns.
Dec 22, 2024
Modest numbers in win
Tagovailoa completed 22 of 34 pass attempts for 215 yards and a touchdown while rushing twice for a loss of one yard in Sunday's 29-17 win over San Francisco.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa played the role of game manager in Sunday's comfortable win, letting Miami's rushing attack and defense handle the 49ers. The Alabama product showed no ill effects from the hip injury that limited the signal-caller during the practice week. The win kept the Dolphin's slim playoff hopes alive, so the team will need more mistake-free football from Tagovailoa against the Browns next Sunday.
Dec 20, 2024
Clear for Sunday
Tagovailoa (hip) doesn't have a designation for Sunday's game versus the 49ers, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa opened Week 16 prep with back-to-back limited practices due to a hip injury, but offensive coordinator Frank Smith told Furones on Thursday that the quarterback's health wasn't a concern. Indeed, Tagovailoa capped the week with a full session Friday, paving the way for him to continue to direct the Dolphins offense. Having said that, he likely will be working with a depleted receiving corps Sunday, as Tyreek Hill (wrist/personal) is listed as questionable, while both Jaylen Waddle (knee) and Dee Eskridge (knee) are doubtful to suit up.
Dec 19, 2024
Still limited at practice
Tagovailoa (hip) remained limited at practice Thursday, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Furones, offensive coordinator Frank Smith previously indicated that Tagovailoa's hip issue is not concerning, a notion that would be supported by the QB practicing fully to close out the week. Friday's injury report is destined to relay whether Tagovailoa approaches Week 16 action with an injury designation or fully cleared to face the 49ers on Sunday.
Dec 18, 2024
Limited practice Wednesday
Tagovailoa (hip) was limited at practice Wednesday, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa's listed limitations make his status worth tracking ahead of Sunday's game against the 49ers, but so far there's been nothing to suggest that the QB's Week 16 status is in danger. Tagovailoa now has two more chances to practice fully, and in turn head into the weekend without an injury designation.

Forgettable afternoon in key game
Tagovailoa completed 29 of 40 passes for 196 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions and lost a fumble in the Dolphins' 20-12 loss to the Texans on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa's final line underscores how much of a sluggish afternoon it was for the talented quarterback, even in the climate-controlled conditions of NRG Stadium. The fact Jaylen Waddle exited the game with a knee injury in the first half and never returned certainly didn't help Tagovailoa's cause, but he played the biggest role in his and the Dolphins' undoing with his four turnovers, the first two which helped lead to 10 points for the Texans. Tagovailoa's final miscue of the afternoon was the most ill-timed, considering it came on the first play of what could have evolved into a game-tying drive for Miami. The fifth-year pro had thrown just four interceptions all season coming in, but Sunday marked his second three-pick tally of the season. Tagovailoa will look to keep the Dolphins' increasingly thin playoff hopes alive against a tough defense that the Texans one that gave him so much trouble shares many similarities with, that of the 49ers, in a Week 16 home clash.

Third straight 300-yard game
Tagovailoa completed 33 of 47 passes for 331 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 32-26 overtime win over the Jets. He also threw a two-point conversion and rushed once for three yards.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa completed 15 of 18 passes for 165 yards in the first half but failed to produce a passing touchdown. His completion percentage fell off after halftime but Tua threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill followed by a two-point conversion to Jaylen Waddle to tie the game 23-23 with 9:04 remaining in the fourth quarter. The quarterback later guided the Dolphins into position for a game-tying 52-yard Jason Sanders field goal in the final seconds of regulation, then drove right down the field on the first possession of overtime to clinch the victory with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jonnu Smith. Tagovailoa has topped 300 passing yards in three consecutive starts while posting an 8:0 TD:INT over that span, and he'll look to keep rolling in Week 15 against the Texans.

Racks up yardage in loss
Tagovailoa completed 36 of 45 passes for 357 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and added two rushes for six yards in the Dolphins' 30-17 loss to the Packers on Thursday. He also threw a two-point conversion pass.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa's final numbers look undeniably impressive without context, particularly for a cold-weather environment in which he's typically had trouble. However, the on-field reality was a bit different, as the Dolphins were already in a 24-3 hole at the half. Tagovailoa did move his team much more efficiently as the game went on, leading three second-half drives of 67 yards or greater, with two of those culminating in touchdown passes to De'Von Achane (14 yards) and Tyreek Hill (12 yards) in the third and fourth quarters, respectively. The 2020 first-round pick also completed a two-point conversion pass to Jaylen Waddle after the first scoring toss, and he threw multiple touchdown strikes without an interception for the third consecutive game. Tagovailoa and the Dolphins will continue their uphill battle to remain in the AFC playoff picture when they host the Jets in a Week 14 divisional matchup on Sunday, Dec. 8, although Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald reports that the talented signal-caller was walking wit

Surgical effort in big win
Tagovailoa completed 29 of 40 passes for 317 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions and rushed three times for minus-2 yards in the Dolphins' 34-15 win over the Patriots on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa displayed his prototypical mastery of head coach Mike McDaniel's offense, connecting with eight different targets and facilitating particularly productive games for Jaylen Waddle (8-144-1) and Jonnu Smith (9-87-1). Tagovailoa's total through the air marked his first time eclipsing the 300-yard mark since Week 1, while his TD tally -- which consisted of scoring tosses to Smith (seven yards), De'Von Achane (nine, 11 yards) and Waddle (23 yards) -- represented a season-high figure. Tagovailoa and his offensive teammates will next look to dispel their reputation for struggling in cold weather when they visit the Packers for a Thanksgiving Night showdown on Thursday.
Nov 17, 2024
Sharp performance in Week 11 win
Tagovailoa completed 28 of 36 passes for 288 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions and committed a fumble recovered by Miami in the Dolphins' 34-19 win over the Raiders on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa posted his highest yardage total since Week 1 while tying a season high in completions and establishing a new personal best in touchdown passes. The 2020 first-round pick connected with Jonnu Smith (one yard, 57 yards) and Tyreek Hill (eight yards) for his trio of scoring tosses, and he helmed an impressive four second-half scoring drives to help the Dolphins win going away. Tagovailoa recorded completions to nine different targets overall, affording him plenty of momentum going into a Week 12 home matchup against the Patriots.
Nov 11, 2024
Solid in Week 10 win
Tagovailoa completed 20 of 28 passes for 207 yards with a touchdown and an interception and rushed once for minus-1 yard in the Dolphins' 23-15 win over the Rams on Monday night. He also lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa took three sacks and fumbled on one of them midway through the second quarter, with Jared Verse scooping up the ball for the Rams at the Dolphins' 36-yard line. While that turnover did lead to a field goal, Tagovailoa played a relatively smooth game otherwise and connected with eight different targets overall. The 2020 first-round pick's one touchdown toss went to Tyreek Hill with 5:32 remaining in the third quarter, and he now draws another favorable matchup when the Raiders visit South Florida for a Week 11 matchup.
Nov 3, 2024
Just three incompletions in loss
Tagovailoa completed 25 of 28 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 30-27 loss to the Bills. He added two rushing attempts for three yards.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa rarely pushed the ball downfield, instead keeping the offense on schedule by accurately dinking and dunking. He threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to De'Von Achane in the second quarter and a game-tying seven-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Waddle with 1:38 left in the fourth, but Buffalo answered with a game-winning field goal in the final seconds. Tua's return from concussion protocol hasn't helped Miami get back in the win column, as the Dolphins are 2-7 overall and 1-3 in games started by Tagovailoa heading into a Week 10 MNF road game against the Rams.
Oct 27, 2024
Throws for 234 in return
Tagovailoa (concussion) completed 28 of 38 passes for 234 yards and one touchdown while rushing three times for 13 yards in Sunday's 28-27 loss to the Cardinals. He fumbled three times but didn't lose a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa showed no signs of early rust in his first action since Week 2, as he completed 11 of his first 12 passes to help the Dolphins take a 10-0 lead. He cooled off for the rest of the first half before throwing a 12-yard touchdown pass to De'Von Achane in the third quarter, but Tagovailoa fumbled a snap out of the back of the end zone for a safety on the next possession to ignite an 18-7 Cardinals run to close out the game. Most importantly, Tagovailoa made it through unscathed after having been on IR since Week 2 against the Bills due to his latest concussion. Up next for Tagovailoa and the Dolphins is a Week 9 rematch in Buffalo.

Does not carry injury designation
Tagovailoa (concussion) was activated off the injured reserve list Saturday and then had his injury designation cleared for Sunday's contest against the Cardinals, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Head coach Mike McDaniel had effectively confirmed the star quarterback would play Friday during an interview with reporters, but it's nice that the official designation was made. The Pro Bowl quarterback is expected to reignite an offense that has the potential to be one of the most explosive and potent in the league.
Oct 26, 2024
Trending toward playing
Tagovailoa (concussion) was activated off injured reserve Saturday ahead Sunday's game against the Cardinals. The quarterback is still listed as questionable, but he's expected to play.
ANALYSIS
The Dolphins didn't remove Tagovailoa's injury designation, but head coach Mike McDaniel already suggested Friday the Pro Bowl quarterback would play. The 26-year-old said he's been symptom-free since Sept. 13, so it's fair to assume the Dolphins offense will effectively return to one of most formidable in the league with Tagovailoa now back.
Oct 25, 2024
Listed as questionable, on track to play
Though Tagovailoa (concussion) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Cardinals after practicing fully both Thursday and Friday, per Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network, the QB is in line to play in the contest, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa -- who has cleared the NFL's concussion protocol -- remains on IR for the time being, but once he's officially activated by the Dolphins ahead of Saturday afternoon's deadline to do so, it's possible that his current 'questionable' designation will be lifted. In any case, Tagovailoa is poised to return to action this weekend, and at this stage there's more uncertainty surrounding who is slated to back him up Sunday.
Oct 25, 2024
Questionable for Sunday
Tagovailoa (concussion) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa suffered his fourth concussion in the last five years back on Thursday, Sept. 12, which forced some tough questions about his future in football. He eventually spent time on injured reserve, and while he reportedly was free of concussion symptoms as of Oct. 3, the Dolphins didn't designate him for return from IR until this Wednesday, and he officially didn't clear the protocol for head injuries until Friday, per Louis-Jacques. Tagovailoa ended the week with back-to-back full practices, but in order to have a chance to play Sunday, the team will need to activate him before Saturday's 4:00 p.m. ET deadline. With Tyler Huntley's (shoulder) placement on IR on Friday, the options to be Miami's backup QB this weekend are Skylar Thompson, Tim Boyle or practice-squad member C.J. Beathard, assuming Tagovailoa starts, as expected.
Oct 25, 2024
Clears concussion protocol
Tagovailoa has cleared the NFL's concussion protocol and is slated to play Sunday against the Cardinals, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa, who hasn't played since suffering his most recent concussion Sept. 12, is thus slated to be activated off IR ahead of Sunday's contest, which positions him to return to the starting lineup this weekend. His looming return should provide a major lift to the Dolphins offense and boosts the fantasy prospects of the team's pass catchers. Meanwhile, with Tyler Huntley (shoulder) likely unavailable, it looks like either Skylar Thompson, Tim Boyle or C.J. Beathard will be in line to back up Tagovailoa on Sunday.
Oct 25, 2024
Expected to clear protocol Friday
Tagovailoa (concussion) is expected to gain full clearance from the NFL's concussion protocol Friday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa, who remains on IR for the time being, turned in a full practice session Thursday, indicating that he's progressed to the fifth and final stage of the concussion protocol. The Dolphins now expected Tagovailoa to gain clearance from an independent neurological consultant Friday, which will make the franchise quarterback eligible to be activated from IR and start Sunday's home matchup against the Cardinals. Top wideouts Tyreek Hill (foot) and Jaylen Waddle (quadriceps) were both limited in Thursday's practice, but if both they and Tagovailoa are able to suit up versus Arizona, it will represent a tremendous boost for Miami's offense.
Oct 24, 2024
Turns in full practice Thursday
Tagovailoa (concussion) was a full participant in Thursday's practice, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
On Wednesday, Tagovailoa returned to practice for the first time since suffering a concussion Sept. 12. He was eased back in as a limited participant to begin the week, but his ability to take every rep Thursday indicates another step forward in the recovery process as he looks to clear the five-step concussion protocol. With another full practice Friday, Tagovailoa will put himself in good position to start Sunday against the Cardinals, but he'll still need to gain clearance from an independent neurologist before he exits the protocol and before Miami formally reinstates him from injured reserve.
Oct 23, 2024
Listed as limited for practice return
Tagovailoa (concussion) was a limited practice participant Wednesday, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
The Dolphins designated him Wednesday to return from injured reserve and reportedly expect Tagovailoa to clear concussion protocol before Sunday's game against Arizona. He'll likely upgrade to full participation Thursday or Friday, and Furones notes that Tagovailoa was sharp during Wednesday's practice, which led to some optimistic comments from Tyreek Hill. The superstar wideout told reporters "we're back, baby" and saidfantasy managers should "start me this week.".
Oct 23, 2024
Returns to practice
Tagovailoa (concussion) is practicing Wednesday, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
As expected, although it remains to be seen if he's a full participant or limited. Tagovailoa will still need to clear concussion protocol before he can play in Sunday's game against the Cardinals. Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports that Tagovailoa is on pace to clear the protocol within the next few days.
Oct 21, 2024
Practice window will open Wednesday
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said Monday that Tagovailoa (concussion) will practice Wednesday in preparation to potentially play Week 8 versus the Cardinals, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa will need to both come off IR and fully clear the NFL's concussion protocol in order to be eligible to play Sunday versus Arizona, but it sounds like barring any unexpected setbacks at practice, the franchise quarterback is trending toward a Week 8 return. He was placed on injured reserve Sept. 12 after suffering a fourth documented concussion in five years, and missed his fourth and final requisite game while sitting out Sunday's loss to Indianapolis, a contest in which interim starter Tyler Huntley (shoulder) was forced out due to injury. The Dolphins' offense has ranked last in points per game since Tagovailoa's injury, with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle having combined for just two catches and 19 yards on four targets in Week 7. His return to the lineup should spark some much-needed life into the production of Miami's skill-position players.
Oct 19, 2024
Will practice, eyeing Week 8 return
Tagovailoa (concussion) will practice next week and is aiming to be available Week 8 against the Cardinals, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Fantasy managers should take this one step at a time. It's encouraging that Tagovailoa will participate in practice next week, and it seems to echo the rumors following the Pro Bowler's traumatic injury that he'd return shortly after the mandated four-week timeframe. The Dolphins will need to activate Tagovailoa off injured reserve in order for him to be eligible to play in Week 8, so expect more information to emerge in the coming days regarding his playing status.
Oct 14, 2024
Expected to play again this season
Coach Mike McDaniel said Monday that Tagovailoa (concussion) is expected to play again during the 2024 season, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa remains on injured reserve and won't be eligible to practice prior to Oct. 23, though it's possible his recovery will take longer than that. Tyler Huntley started Miami's last two games prior to the Week 6 bye and is expected to remain under center Sunday against the Colts.
Oct 7, 2024
Consultation with expert on deck
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said Monday that Tagovailoa (concussion) is scheduled for an "expert consultation" during the team's Week 6 bye, Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
McDaniel said "everything is so far so good" with regard to the franchise quarterback's recovery progress, though he noted "the final stages of protocol won't be achieved until we bring [Tagovailoa] back off IR." Tagovailoa won't be eligible to come off IR until Week 8 at the earliest, positioning Tyler Huntley to remain Miami's starter in the interim, including at least for the team's game against the Colts in Week 7. Tagovailoa had initial meetings with neurologists in early October and is reportedly symptom free. Assuming his recovery continues to progress without any setbacks, it sounds like the Dolphins will plan for him to return to the starting lineup this season. A clear timetable for Tagovailoa's return to practice remains undisclosed, though.
Oct 3, 2024
Free of concussion symptoms
Tagovailoa (concussion) has been "symptom free" and has met with neurologists, and at this stage, the quarterback hasn't received any feedback that has dissuaded him from continuing his playing career, Adam Schefter reported Monday on ESPN's "Monday Night Countdown" program.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa was diagnosed with his fourth documented concussion in five years back on Sept. 12, when he collided with the Bills' Damar Hamlin while rushing for a first down. Despite Tagovailoa's troubling history with concussions, he thus far seems to be making good progress in his recovery. After being placed on injured reserve following the Week 2 loss to Buffalo, Tagovailoa won't be eligible to return to the Dolphins' active roster until the team's Week 8 matchup with the Cardinals. Tagovailoa seems like he could be a realistic option to return to option for that game, provided he doesn't take a turn for the worse in his recovery along with the Dolphins being comfortable having him play again.
Sep 24, 2024
Meeting with neurologists this week
Coach Mike McDaniel said Tuesday that Tagovailoa (concussion) will meet with outside neurologists this week, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
McDaniel said "the plan hasn't changed." Tagovailoa will remain without a timetable to return until after consulting outside neurologists, though as a result of his placement on IR last week, the earliest possible date for the quarterback's return to action would be Oct. 27 versus the Cardinals. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network has reported that Tagovailoa has no plans to retire, but meeting with specialists this week will allow him to make the most informed decision about his playing future. Meanwhile, with Skylar Thompson (ribs) considered day-to-day, Tyler Huntley and Tim Boyle could also be in contention to see playing time Week 4 versus the Titans.
Sep 17, 2024
Move to IR official
The Dolphins placed Tagovailoa (concussion) on injured reserve Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
As a result of the transaction, Tagovailoa will miss at least the next four games, and with the Dolphins on bye Week 6, the quarterback won't be eligible for activation until after Week 7. Tagovailoa remains without an official timeline to rejoin the Dolphins, as he'll meet with outside neurologists this week to receive more feedback regarding the severity of his latest brain injury, which he suffered in last week's loss to the Bills. Tagovailoa has now suffered four documented concussions in the past five years, and though the quarterback reportedly has no plans to retire from football, he'll need to clear all five steps of the NFL's concussion protocol before a potential return date is established. The Dolphins signed Tyler Huntley off the Ravens' practice squad to replace Tagovailoa on the 53-man roster, but Skylar Thompson will get the first chance to step in as Miami's new starting quarterback Sunday in Seattle.
Sep 17, 2024
Headed for IR
The Dolphins plan to place Tagovailoa (concussion) on injured reserve in the coming days, Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network report.
ANALYSIS
Once the transaction is official, Tagovailoa will be ineligible to play in any of the Dolphins' next four games and won't be a candidate to return until at least Week 8. Though Tagovailoa reportedly isn't considering retirement after he sustained his fourth documented concussion in the past five years during this past Thursday's loss to the Bills, the Dolphins aren't offering a timeline for his return while he meets with outside neurologists and awaits clearance from all five steps of the NFL's concussion protocol. Skylar Thompson -- who relieved Tagovailoa against the Bills -- is slated to take over as the Dolphins' starting quarterback beginning with Sunday's game in Seattle.
Sep 16, 2024
Miami undecided about IR
Coach Mike McDaniel said Monday that the Dolphins don't yet have enough information to decide whether to place Tagovailoa (concussion) on injured reserve, Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
McDaniel confirmed that Tagovailoa remains in the concussion protocol and will be meeting with outside specialists, per Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network. While the Dolphins haven't yet officially ruled Tagovailoa out to play Week 3 against the Seahawks, it seems almost assured that Skylar Thompson will start at least that game. The team also brought in Tyler Huntley off Baltimore's practice squad Monday to act as a Week 3 backup option, per Adam H. Beasley of ProFootballNetwork.com. Placing Tagovailoa on IR would rule him out for at least Miami's next four games, and it appears that the team intends to await the results of Tagovailoa's upcoming meetings with neurologists this week before making any decision. In the event that Tagovailoa is cleared to continue his NFL career and decides to do so, it remains to be seen when he will be given the green light to resume taking part in football activities.
Sep 15, 2024
Not looking to retire
Tagovailoa has no plans to retire after suffering his fourth documented concussion in five years in Thursday's 31-10 loss to the Bills, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said Friday that he's not putting a timeline on Tagovailoa's return to the field, instead leaving the decision in the hands of the quarterback and his doctors. Though Adam Schefter of ESPN reported earlier Sunday that Tagovailoa is meeting with neurologists this week to get more information about the severity of his latest brain injury and the cumulative effect of the ones he has suffered in the past to make the most informed decision about his future, the quarterback's preference is to continue playing. Tagovailoa's opinion could change depending on the feedback he receives, however, and even if doctors clear him to continue his career, it's not clear when he might be ready to resume football activities. Skylar Thompson is likely to step in as the Dolphins' quarterback for at least the team's next game Sept. 22 in Seattle.
Sep 15, 2024
Meeting with neurologists on tap
Tagovailoa (concussion) is scheduled to meet with neurologists early this week, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
After being diagnosed with a concussion following his early exit from Thursday's 31-10 loss to the Bills, Tagovailoa will seek input from neurologists regarding the severity of his latest brain injury and the cumulative effect of the ones he has suffered in the past to make the most informed decision about his playing future, according to Schefter. The quarterback had previously been diagnosed with two concussions in 2022 and took a third hit to the head that same season that prompted the NFL to alter how concussions are reported and evaluated. Tagovailoa also suffered a concussion during his final collegiate season at Alabama, meaning that he's been diagnosed with four concussions over the past five years. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel didn't comment on Tagovailoa's playing status moving forward, noting that he wants the quarterback to focus on his his health before discussing the possibility of a return. Coach won't touch recovery timeline
Coach Mike McDaniel said Friday that the Dolphins won't put a timetable on Tagovailoa's recovery from the concussion that he suffered during Thursday's 31-10 loss to the Bills, Kevin Patra of NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa has an extensive concussion history going back to the 2022 season, missing seven combined games (including a playoff contest) due to head injuries. When asked about a possible timeline for the quarterback, McDaniel relayed, ""First and foremost, I'm not assessing the injury through the lens of, 'Alright, so what does this mean for him playing?' Really, for me, I know the facts are that it's important that he gets healthy day by day, and in that, the best thing I can do is not try to assess what this even means from a football standpoint." For as long as Tagovailoa is sidelined, Skylar Thompson is in line to lead Miami's offense, beginning Sunday, Sept. 22 at Seattle.

Diagnosed with concussion
Tagovailoa was diagnosed with a concussion and ruled out from returning after exiting Thursday's game against the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa was injured late in the third quarter after rushing for a first down and lowering his head into the midsection of Damar Hamlin. He was able to walk off the field under his own power but was quickly diagnosed and ruled out. The Dolphins have 10 days until their Week 3 matchup against Seattle, though Tagovailoa's status will be uncertain -- particularly given his history of concussions.

Exits after apparent head injury
Tagovailoa exited Thursday's game against Buffalo after suffering an apparent head injury, Hal Habib of The Palm Beach Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa scrambled to get a first down late in the third quarter and lowered his head into Damar Hamlin. He stayed on the field for several minutes but was able to walk off the field under his own power. Tagovailoa immediately went to the locker room for further evaluation, leaving Skylar Thompson to take over under center.

Leads Miami to comeback win
Tagovailoa completed 23 of 37 passes for 338 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions and added an 11-yard rush in the Dolphins' 20-17 win over the Jaguars on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa overcame a lackluster first half where the Jaguars seemed to be continually one step ahead, leveraging a strong second-half performance from his own team's defensive unit and hitting on some key passes over the final two quarters. None was bigger than his 80-yard touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill late in the third quarter, which brought Miami to within four points. Tagovailoa also subsequently led a pair of field-goal drives that totaled 20 combined plays, with the latter march culminating in a game-winning, 52-yard field goal by Jason Sanders. Tagovailoa and his explosive skill-position weapons may not be able to get away with another slow start Week 2, however, as Josh Allen and the Bills come calling in a Thursday night matchup.
Aug 23, 2024
Unlikely to play Friday
Tagovailoa isn't slated to play in Friday's preseason game at Tampa Bay, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa thus will end this year's exhibition slate with one appearance last Saturday against the Commanders in which he completed all five of his passes for 51 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. Once Week 1 rolls around, the biggest question marks for the Dolphins offense will be the health of WRs Tyreek Hill (hand) and Jaylen Waddle (undisclosed), neither of whom took part in the preseason. In two campaigns working with coach Mike McDaniel, Tagovailoa has completed 67.4 percent of his passes, averaged 272.4 passing yards per game and put together a 54:22 TD:INT in 30 regular-season contests.
Aug 17, 2024
Sharp in Saturday's cameo
Tagovailoa completed all five passes for 51 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in the Dolphins' 13-6 preseason win over the Commanders on Saturday night.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa drew the start as planned, and even though he was operating without Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and Odell Beckham (undisclosed), the fifth-year signal-caller still put together a flawless drive from his perspective. The 2020 first-round pick capped off the 11-play, 61-yard march with a 13-yard touchdown pass to River Cracraft, putting an early and successful end to his night. It remains to be seen if Saturday's brief appearance will represent the extent of Tagovailoa's preseason action, but he'll have one more chance to take the field before Week 1 in Friday night's road exhibition finale against the Buccaneers.
Aug 15, 2024
Starters to play vs. Washington
Coach Mike McDaniel said "guys who are starters" will suit up for "some action" during Saturday's preseason game against the Commanders, though he didn't specify Tagovailoa by name, Chris Perkins of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa didn't suit up for the Dolphins' preseason opener last week, but it sounds like he and the first-team offense could get some reps in versus Washington. McDaniel said further decisions on which starters will play Saturday, and for how long, will be made Thursday afternoon. If Miami follows a similar plan to last offseason, Tagovailoa will play a few series Saturday and also suit up for the team's exhibition finale versus the Buccaneers on Aug. 23.
Aug 9, 2024
No action in preseason opener
Tagovailoa did not play in the Dolphins' 20-13 preseason win over the Falcons on Friday night.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Miami's $212.4 million quarterback was on the sideline for the exhibition opener. However, considering the 2020 first-round pick did play in the final two preseason games last summer after also sitting out the first contest, Tagovailoa could at least see a series or two against the Commanders in a home preseason battle a week from Saturday night.
Aug 7, 2024
Unlikely to play Friday
Tagovailoa isn't likely to play in Friday's preseason game against Atlanta, Hal Habib of The Palm Beach Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Mike McDaniel didn't quite commit to holding Tagovailoa out but told reporters that they wouldn't be surprised by the team's plan. Tagovailoa was held out of the preseason opener last year before playing in the final two exhibitions.

Multi-year extension gets done
Tagovailoa and the Dolphins agreed to terms Friday on a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa and Miami spent much of the offseason working on negotiations for a long-term extension, and the 2020 first-round pick now gets a multi-year commitment and large payday from the franchise that once selected him fifth overall. While awaiting a new deal Tagovailoa only practiced partially at training camp, but Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports that he returned as a full participant Friday. Since pairing with head coach Mike McDaniel, Tagovailoa has transformed into one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the NFL and taken full advantage of having stars Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle leading his wide receiver corps. The 26-year-old is coming off the first full season of his four-year career, a 2023 campaign in which he led the league with 4,624 passing yards while throwing 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, with his 8.3 YPA ranking second in the NFL. The additions of No. 3 receiver Odell Beckham (undisclosed) and TE Jonnu Smith, plus another year of growth in McDaniel's offensive scheme, could pr

Tagovailoa's current activity level at training camp is reminiscent of his participation during spring practices, when attended all of June minicamp but missed some time at OTAs. In Wednesday's practice, he participated fully in individual and 7-on-7 drills but only took two snaps in 11-on-11s. Coach Mike McDaniel said this situation is "very fluid," and that the team is "taking it day by day." This offseason, quarterbacks Jared Goff and Trevor Lawrence both signed massive extensions with their respective franchises, while elsewhere in the league Jordan Love and Dak Prescott are notable names also negotiating for new deals. The Dolphins thus have plenty of incentive to get an extension locked in for Tagovailoa quickly, both to get the quarterback back on the field and taking reps as soon as possible, and to avoid having to play catch-up in a rising QB market.

Drops weight, awaits extension
Coach Mike McDaniel said at OTAs that Tagovailoa, who continues to vie for a contract extension beyond his fifth-year option, has dropped between 10 and 15 pounds this offseason, Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa has been an on-and-off participant at OTAs for Miami, but McDaniel made clear that his attendance schedule has been a non-issue. The quarterback added weight last offseason in order to protect himself, and coupled with training to reduce impact taken when falling to the ground, that allowed Tagovailoa to play a full 17-game slate for the first time in his NFL career. It appears that the signal-caller is now putting in the work to get more mobile while keeping the traits that have added to his durability, with McDaniel noting that Tagovailoa is looking "svelte." Both sides will continue negotiations on a hopeful multi-year extension, though Alain Poupart of SI.com notes that the possibility of Tagovailoa playing out the 2024 season on his fifth-year option can't be entirely dismissed.

Present for start of OTAs
Tagovailoa is present for the start of OTAs on Monday, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa was recently reported to have missed a notable amount of Miami's offseason work amidst ongoing talks about a contract extension, but the 26-year-old quarterback in the building to kick off the start of OTAs. It appears that both Tagovailoa and the Dolphins' organization are confident that an extension will get done prior to the start of the regular season, so unless things stall on that front there shouldn't be too many concerns about the quarterback's offseason participation. Currently, Tagovailoa is slated to play out the 2024 campaign on his fifth-year option. He played a full 17 games last year for the first time in his career, achieving new highs with 4,624 passing yards, 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
May 17, 2024
Has skipped some offseason work
Tagovailoa has reportedly missed most of Miami's team activities this offseason while negotiations on a potential contract extension continue, Alain Poupart of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Mike McDaniel and GM Chris Grier have both vocally supported the idea of Tagovailoa remaining with the Dolphins long-term, and an extension being penned this offseason, but it sounds like until that's official, the team may not have the quarterback's full participation. That said, Tagovailoa was confirmedly a participant in part of Miami's offseason workouts back in April, with Poupart noting that the team released videos of him throwing on multiple different days. There are no signs that Tagovailoa would consider skipping June's mandatory minicamp, and he himself has downplayed concerns about contract negotiations. As things currently stand, Tagovailoa is set to play out the 2024 season under the fifth-year option on his rookie contract.

Finally gets No. 3 receiver
Tagovailoa's top wide receiver options Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle will be joined by Odell Beckham, who officially signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins on Wednesday,
ANALYSIS
Miami added offensive tackle Patrick Paul in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft to help Tagovailoa stay upright, a key move following the departure of Robert Hunt to Carolina, but the team's only notable skill-position splashes were sixth-round wideout Malik Washington and fourth-round running back Jaylen Wright, both of whom are speedsters set to begin in depth roles. Adding an experienced veteran in the form of Beckham should finally provide Miami's offense with a reliable third starting wideout, something the team has lacked since coach Mike McDaniel's arrival in 2022. As Marcel Louis-Jacques notes, beyond the top tandem of Hill and Waddle no receiver has logged more than 32 catches or 417 yards in the McDaniel era. The arrival of Beckham, not to mention new tight end Jonnu Smith, promises to finally provide Tagovailoa with more reliable playmakers beyond his top two options.

Optimism about extension
Coach Mike McDaniel said Tuesday that he "absolutely" wants Tagovailoa to sign a contract extension this offseason, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The lefty is set to play out 2024 under the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, after leading the league in yards per attempt in 2022 (8.9) and total passing yards in 2023 (4,624). Tagovailoa hasn't quite progressed to fantasy stardom despite his success, as he doesn't offer much in the way of rushing stats, missed four games in 2022 and then saw Miami RBs rush for 27 of the team's 57 TDs on offense in 2023. He still has a path to QB1 value, at least on the low end, throwing passes to WRs Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle in one of the NFL's best-designed offenses. Early reports suggest both team and player expect an extension to get done this offseason.

Underwhelms in season-ending loss
Tagovailoa completed 20 of 39 passes for 199 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the Dolphins' 26-7 wild-card loss to the Chiefs on Saturday night. He also rushed three times for 25 yards.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa came into the game with plenty of questions hanging over him in terms of his ability to thrive in cold weather, and he unfortunately did little to dispel the narrative. The 2020 first-round pick bore little resemblance to the prolific passer he was most of his career-best season, one in which he set new personal bests with 4,624 passing yards, a 69.3 percent completion rate and 29 touchdowns across 17 games. Tagovailoa also put together five 300-yard efforts, including a 466-yard tally versus the Chargers in Week 1, and he'll now head into a pivotal offseason where a contract extension figures to be of utmost priority with the final year of his current deal looming in 2024.

Offense sputters for three quarters
Tagovailoa (quadriceps/shoulder) completed 17 of 27 pass attempts for 173 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Sunday's 21-14 loss to the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa started and ended Miami's nine offensive possessions with drive-killing interceptions as the Dolphins slid back into the final wild-card spot while the Bills crowned themselves as AFC East champs. The bulk of Tagovailoa's meager fantasy production came over the course of two methodical touchdown drives in the second quarter. Outside of that, every other offensive drive for the Dolphins ended in either a punt or an interception. Tagovailoa has now thrown four picks over his last two games, matching his total thrown over his previous eight contests combined. The Alabama product finishes the 2023 regular season completing 69 percent of his passes for a league-leading 4,624 passing yards to go along with 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Tagovailoa will attempt to end his recent slump when the Dolphins visit the Chiefs on Saturday for the start of the playoffs.
Jan 3, 2024
Good to go for Week 18
Tagovailoa (quadriceps/left shoulder) was a full participant in practice Wednesday, Travis Wingfield of the Dolphins' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa had some shoulder soreness after this past Sunday's 56-19 loss to the Ravens, and he's nursing a quadriceps injury as well, but neither issue is significant enough to threaten his availability for Sunday's home game against the Bills. A win Sunday would clinch the AFC East crown and the No. 2 seed in the AFC for the Dolphins, but Miami would cede those accomplishments to Buffalo with a loss.
Jan 1, 2024
In line to play Sunday
Coach Mike McDaniel told reporters Monday that he's not worried about the availability of Tagovailoa (shoulder) for Sunday night's game against the Bills, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Following the Dolphins' Week 17 loss to the Ravens, Tagovailoa noted that his shoulder was a little sore, but it appears as though the QB is no danger of sitting out this Sunday's contest, which will decide which team claims the AFC East championship. That said, it wouldn't surprise us to see Tagovailoa's name on Miami's injury report this week.
Dec 31, 2023
Downplays shoulder soreness
Following Sunday's 56-19 loss to the Ravens, Tagovailoa downplayed the left shoulder issue he sustained during the contest, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
During his post-game news conference, Tagovailoa noted that his "shoulder's good. Just sore." Based on the signal-caller's comments Sunday, it appears as though his status for next weekend's game against the Bills isn't in danger. That said, there's a pretty good chance Tagovailoa ends up listed on Miami's Week 18 injury report.
Dec 31, 2023
Hurts shoulder Sunday
Tagovailoa was forced out of Sunday's game against the Ravens with a left shoulder injury.
ANALYSIS
Prior to sustaining his shoulder injury, Tagovailoa had completed 22 of 38 passes for 237 yards with two TDs and two picks. In his absence, Mike White is next up for the Dolphins' QB reps Sunday.
Dec 29, 2023
Will start Week 17
Tagovailoa (thumb/quadriceps) will start Sunday's game against the Ravens, Grant Gordon of NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa's practice participation during the week was limited by the pair of injuries, but he'll be out there for Sunday's pivotal clash. With a win in Baltimore, the 11-4 Dolphins would take over as the top seed in the AFC, but a loss could open the door for the Bills to win the AFC East, as Miami hosts Buffalo in Week 18 and has already lost once to the Bills this season. Tagovailoa will be working without his second-favorite target Sunday, as Jaylen Waddle (ankle) has been ruled out.
Dec 28, 2023
Limited again Thursday
Tagovailoa (thumb/quadricep) was listed as a limited participant in practice Thursday, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa has had his reps capped in both of the Dolphins' first two Week 17 practices while he manages a pair of injuries, but the coaching staff hasn't indicated that either health concern is anything that will threaten his status for Sunday's game in Baltimore. The quarterback hasn't shown any sign of being affected by the injury to the thumb on his throwing hand either, as Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network notes that Tagovailoa looked good while tossing passes in the open portion of Thursday's session. If Tagovailoa is able to put in a full practice Friday, he'll likely avoid an injury designation heading into the weekend.
Dec 27, 2023
Limited in practice
Tagovailoa (thumb/quad) was a limited participant in practice Wednesday, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
His ability to practice in any capacity at the beginning of the week suggests neither the left thumb injury nor quad injury represents a serious threat to Tagovailoa's availability for a home game against Baltimore on Sunday. It does seem WR Jaylen Waddle (ankle) is in danger of missing the game, though the Dolphins weren't ruling him out as of Wednesday afternoon.
Dec 24, 2023
Nears 300 yards in win
Tagovailoa completed 24 of 37 pass attempts for 293 yards and a touchdown with no turnovers in Sunday's 22-20 win over Dallas.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa benefited from the return of star wideout Tyreek Hill (ankle) after the quarterback posted his highest yardage total since Week 11. That said, Miami may lose its other star receiver after Jaylen Waddle (eye/shin) left Sunday's contest twice with two different injuries. As for the game itself, Tagovailoa performed adequately and led his team to victory, but the offense was stagnant in the red zone with just one touchdown to five field goals. Tagovailoa would benefit from having his full slate of talented receivers to overcome a tough Ravens defense in a road matchup Dec. 31.
Dec 17, 2023
Modest numbers without Hill in win
Tagovailoa completed 21 of 24 passes for 224 yards and one touchdown in Sunday's 30-0 win over the Jets.
ANALYSIS
After the Dolphins took advantage of a couple short fields to get a rushing touchdown and a field goal, Tagovailoa helped them extend the lead to 17-0 with a 60-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Waddle, who accounted for 142 of Tagovailoa's 224 passing yards. While Tagovailoa didn't light up the box score in Tyreek Hill's (ankle) absence, he avoided major mistakes while letting Miami's defense and running game lead the way. The starting quarterback took most of the fourth quarter off after his team built a 30-0 lead. Tagovailoa has thrown only one touchdown over the last two games with Hill banged up, so he'll hope to get his top target back in Week 16 against the Cowboys.
Dec 12, 2023
Exposed after Hill injury
Tagovailoa completed 23 of 33 passes for 240 yards without a touchdown or interception in Monday's 28-27 loss to the Titans. He added three rushing attempts for 15 yards and fumbled twice, losing one.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa fumbled a snap on second-and-goal from the 2-yard line to end Miami's opening drive, and the offense bogged down after Tyreek Hill left with an ankle injury on the following possession. Tua finished the first half with just 84 passing yards, and while the Dolphins found more success after Hill returned in the third quarter, Miami's three touchdowns came on a pick-six and two Raheem Mostert touchdown runs set up by fumble recoveries deep in Tennessee territory. The Dolphins got the ball down by one with 1:49 remaining but turned it over on downs with Hill playing at less than 100 percent. Given how poorly Tagovailoa played while Hill wasn't in the game, he could struggle in Week 15 against the stout Jets secondary if Hill isn't healthy.
Dec 3, 2023
Elite efficiency in Week 13 win
Tagovailoa completed 18 of 24 passes for 280 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Dolphins' 45-15 win over the Commanders on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa and the rest of Miami's front-line players got a chance to take an early seat in the fourth quarter thanks to the expansive lead the fourth-year signal-caller played an integral part in forging. Playing against a Commanders secondary that had been victimized regularly by opposing air attacks, Tagovailoa executed an early aggressive game plan from head coach Mike McDaniel to near perfection, averaging 11.7 yards per attempt while connecting with Tyreek Hill for touchdown passes of 78 and 60 yards in the first and second quarters, respectively. Tagovailoa finished with an elite QB rating of 141.0 for the day, and he's now completed at least 70.0 percent of his passes in three straight games. Tagovailoa and his aerial weapons could be set up for another productive contest in a Week 14 home matchup against the vulnerable Titans secondary on Monday night, Dec. 11.
Nov 24, 2023
Three turnovers, just one TD in win
Tagovailoa completed 21 of 30 passes for 243 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Friday's 34-13 win over the Jets. He added one rushing yard on two attempts and lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa failed to connect with Tyreek Hill in the end zone on fourth down to end Miami's opening drive, but he found Hill for a seven-yard touchdown in the second quarter. That throw extended Tua's streak of games with a touchdown pass to 20 consecutive appearances, which gives him sole possession of second place in franchise history behind Dan Marino's 30-game streak in 1985-87. He let the Jets back into the game with a pick-six to cut Miami's lead to 10-6 in the final minute of the first half, only for Tim Boyle to return the favor on the final play before halftime, allowing the Dolphins to bleed clock with a run-heavy approach in the second half. Tagovailoa came up short of 250 passing yards for just the fourth time this season, but he'll have a nice opportunity to get back over that threshold in Week 13 against a Washington defense that just allowed 331 passing yards and four touchdowns to Dak Prescott on Thanksgiving.
Nov 19, 2023
Eclipses 300-yard mark in win
Tagovailoa completed 28 of 39 passes for 325 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the Dolphins' 20-13 win over the Raiders on Sunday. He also rushed twice for six yards and lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
The Dolphins had more trouble than anticipated overall with the feisty Raiders, but Tagovailoa finished the game with another impressive stat line that included his fifth 300-yard effort and sixth multi-touchdown tally of the campaign. Tagovailoa lost star running back De'Von Achane (knee) early into the rookie's return from a four-game absence and also saw Tyreek Hill exit briefly with a hand injury before returning. While the final point total was a bit underwhelming, Tagovailoa's day certainly pleased fantasy managers and sends him into a Week 12 Black Friday afternoon divisional road clash against the Jets with plenty of momentum.
Nov 5, 2023
Can't solve KC defense
Tagovailoa completed 21 of 34 passes for 193 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 21-14 loss to Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa has been efficient for the entire season, though that disappeared against Kansas City as he managed only 5.7 yards per attempt. He remained accurate, so his inefficiency ultimately came from his inability to push the ball down the field, illustrated by only one completion that went over 20 yards. Despite the slow performance, Tagovailoa did make a nice throw to Cedrick Wilson to connect for a 31-yard touchdown. The Dolphins will look to regroup on a Week 10 bye before a Week 11 matchup against the Raiders.
Oct 29, 2023
Eclipses 300-yard mark in win
Tagovailoa completed 30 of 45 passes for 324 yards with three touchdowns and one interception and added eight yards on six carries in the Dolphins' 31-17 win over the Patriots on Sunday. He was also charged with a lost fumble on a mishandled handoff to Raheem Mostert.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa's day included a couple of minor blemishes in the pair of turnovers, but the fourth-year quarterback made up for it with another sharp performance. Tagovailoa started off hot with a 42-yard touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill in the first quarter, and he followed it up with a one-yard scoring strike to Cedrick Wilson on a quick slant in the second quarter. Tagovailoa then put the finishing touches on the two-touchdown win by hitting Jaylen Waddle from 31 yards out for his final score of the day. Tagovailoa now has five games with multiple touchdown passes, with three of those coming in the last four games. The Dolphins next gear up for a Week 9 showdown with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in Germany, one in which Tagovailoa and the air attack should be busy.
Oct 23, 2023
Mixed results on SNF
Tagovailoa completed 23 of 32 pass attempts for 216 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's 31-17 loss to the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa had a down game by the lofty standards he set in the six games leading up to Sunday's dud. The 25-year-old's only turnover came late in the fourth quarter as the Dolphins were trying to even the score at 24. Tua was pressured to throw into coverage on third and long to keep the drive alive, resulting in an errant throw that was picked off for his sixth interception of the season and eventually Miami's third loss. In the quarterback's defense, this was a road game against a tough opponent looking to rebound from an ugly loss in Week 6. Tagovailoa will have to bounce back in his own right as the Dolphins attempt to get back into the win column against New England next Sunday.
Oct 15, 2023
Three touchdowns in easy win
Tagovailoa completed 21 of 31 passes for 262 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's 42-21 win over Carolina.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa recorded his second-fewest yards in a game this season, though that's more an indication of his excellent start to the year than a poor performance. He averaged 8.5 yards per attempt and managed his third game of the campaign with at least three touchdowns, which came from three, four and 41 yards away. In addition, Tagovailoa continued to show the ability to push the ball deep, as he completed two passes of more than 40 yards and four of greater than 20. He now has at least 249 yards and one touchdown in every contest heading into a Week 7 matchup against the Eagles.
Oct 8, 2023
Eclipses 300-yard mark in win
Tagovailoa completed 22 of 30 passes for 308 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in the Dolphins' 31-16 win over the Giants on Sunday. He also rushed twice for six yards.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa uncharacteristically was guilty of a pair of miscues, with his first interception late in the second quarter going for a pick-six to give the Giants their first first half-points of the season. The fourth-year pro made up for it with his yardage total and pair of touchdown passes, which went for two and 69 yards to Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill, respectively. Tagovailoa has now thrown for over 300 yards in three of his first five games of the campaign, and he'll draw another favorable matchup in Week 6 when the Panthers come to town.
Oct 1, 2023
Outperformed by Allen in loss
Tagovailoa completed 25 of 35 passes for 282 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the Dolphins' 48-20 loss to the Bills on Sunday. He also rushed twice for seven yards. He also committed a fumble he recovered and he also picked up a second loose ball.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa and his high-octane arsenal of weapons appeared set to keep pace with an equally high-powered Bills offense early with a pair of scoring drives capped by De'Von Achane touchdown runs. However, Buffalo's attack ultimately overwhelmed Miami's defense, and Tagovailoa couldn't keep pace while also taking four sacks and throwing a third-quarter interception in Dolphins territory when the game was still within reach. Tagovailoa naturally has the ability to bounce back from what was a somewhat subpar performance by his team's lofty standards, a goal he'll look to accomplish in a home date with the Giants in Week 5.
Sep 24, 2023
Spearheads record-setting win
Tagovailoa completed 23 of 26 passes for 309 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in the Dolphins' 70-20 win over the Broncos on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa's name will be at the helm of a performance that will go down in the annals of NFL history, even as the Raheem Mostert-De'Von Achane duo accounted for five total rushing touchdowns. However, part of the backfield tandem's success came in conjunction with Tagovailoa, who hit Achane for a no-look four-yard shovel scoring pass early in the second quarter and a 10-yard touchdown strike on the first play of the final period, while also connecting with Mostert for a 19-yard touchdown throw late in the third. Tagovailoa's first touchdown of the day went to Tyreek Hill and covered 54 yards in the first quarter, and the fourth-year signal-caller finished the first half a perfect 16-for-16 through the air. Through three contests, both the 2020 first-round pick and the offense as a whole look to be in complete mastery of head coach Mike McDaniel's creative system ahead of a marquee Week 4 road matchup against the Bills next Sunday.
Sep 18, 2023
Modest output in win
Tagovailoa completed 21 of 30 pass attempts for 249 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's 24-17 win over New England.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa was held in check by a division opponent after going off for 466 yards and three scores against the Chargers last week. The 25-year-old connected with favorite target Tyreek Hill for an early touchdown, but the passing game gave way to Raheem Mostert (18-121-2) and Miami's running game in the second half to seal the victory. Tagovailoa may be without his second favorite target, Jaylen Waddle (head), next week after the wideout exited Sunday's contest to be evaluated for a concussion. Either way, Tua's fantasy managers are hoping for results closer to Week 1 when the Dolphins head home to host the Broncos next Sunday.
Sep 10, 2023
Dominant in win over Chargers
Tagovailoa completed 28 of 45 passes for 466 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 36-34 win over the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Miami came out with an aggressive gameplan and put the game in Tagovailoa's hands. He responded by effectively distributing the ball to his playmakers at wide receiver -- particularly Tyreek Hill. However, Tagovailoa also pushed the ball down the field plenty, as he completed eight passes of more than 20 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown strike to Hill late in the third quarter. Tagovailoa fell just short of his career high for yards in a game, as he threw for 469 yards in Week 2 of the 2022 season against Baltimore.
Aug 26, 2023
Sharp in preseason finale
Tagovailoa completed four of six passes for 67 yards and rushed once for no gain in the Dolphins' 31-18 preseason loss to the Jaguars on Saturday night.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Tagovailoa made a relatively brief appearance and had highlights on both of the drives he was in for. The fourth-year pro led the Dolphins on an 11-play, 74-yard march on his second possession, one that culminated in a field goal. He'd also recorded his longest completion on his first pass, a 32-yard connection with Tyreek Hill on Miami's first play from scrimmage. The performance served as a fitting tune-up for Tagovailoa and the rest of the first-team offense, and the focus will now shift to a Week 1 road showdown against the Chargers on Sunday, Sept. 10.
Aug 24, 2023
Will play in preseason finale
Coach Mike McDaniel said Tagovailoa will play in the Dolphins' preseason finale against the Jaguars on Saturday, Tom D'Angelo of The Palm Beach Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa will play "more than a series, less than a half," according to McDaniel. In the same breath, McDaniel praised Tagovailoa's offseason work, which recently drew criticism from ESPN on-air personality Ryan Clark. "I can say hard facts that I've seen with my own eyes and it's been top five on the team," McDaniel said about the QB's work ethic. "Every metric of strength that is measured he's shattered his previous highs and in some instances he's almost twice as strong with things. And that's a daily commitment that he hasn't wavered from. He's taken nutrition to another level. He's taken his commitment to what he's trying to do and really thought outside the box, and really, really worked at it. I couldn't be happier with the work that he's put in and what I've actually viewed from my own eyes."
Aug 19, 2023
Healthy preseason debut
Tagovailoa completed five of seven pass attempts for 61 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in his preseason debut against the Texans on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Things got off to a shaky start when Tagovailoa completed his first pass to a Texans' defender for an interception. The 25-year-old rebounded on Miami's next possession by leading a 93-yard drive that led to a Raheem Mostert rushing touchdown. Tagovailoa would exit after just two drives as he prepares to start for the Dolphins once the regular season kicks off. The 2020 first-round pick is focused on staying healthy after suffering injuries to the head/neck area last year, something he prepared for by learning an improved falling technique through jiu-jitsu practice this past offseason.
Aug 19, 2023
Appears on track to play Saturday
Tagovailoa isn't listed by the Dolphins among the players not expected to play in Saturday's preseason game against the Texans, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The same applies to star WR Tyreek Hill, as it looks like the team's healthy starters will have an opportunity to see some reps Saturday. If so, it remains to be seen how long Tagovailoa plays, with Mike White and Skylar Thompson also available to see QB work as the game progresses.
Aug 11, 2023
Not slated to play Friday
Tagovailoa is not in line to see action in Friday's preseason opener against the Falcons, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Wolfe also indicates that Atlanta signal caller Desmond Ridder is not slated to play in the contest. In Tagovailoa's anticipated absence, Skylar Thompson and Mike White are available to handle Miami's QB reps Friday.

Bulked up for Year 4
Tagovailoa has added noticeable size and strength during Miami's offseason training program, David Furones of the Orlando Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa's mindset is on improvement entering Year 4, as his offseason has featured not only strength training, but also techniques to avoid future concussions and practice with a helmet camera to put him more in sync with coaches. Last year Tagovailoa proved an ability to thrive in coach Mike McDaniel's scheme, at least when healthy, but concussion issues limited him to just 13 appearances. Now with another offseason of familiarity with McDaniel's system, plus increased chemistry with star wideouts Tyreek Hill (undisclosed) and Jaylen Waddle, Tagovailoa should be viewed as a high-upside option in 2023 fantasy drafts after the top options at his position are off the board.
Apr 19, 2023
Optimistic about avoiding concussions
Tagovailoa considered retirement this offseason but instead decided to prioritize training that may help him avoid future concussions, The Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa said Wednesday that doctors told him he isn't at significant risk for chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and doesn't have any extra risk of suffering additional concussions. Head injuries limited him to 13 games last year in what was otherwise a breakout season, with Tagovailoa throwing 25 touchdowns to only eight interceptions while leading the league in yards per pass attempt (8.9). He'll have a similarly favorable setup this season under coach Mike McDaniel, with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle forming the fastest WR duo in the NFL and having a strong argument to be considered the best. The team's skill-position players look much the same as last year minus TE Mike Gesicki, whose role had been scaled back under McDaniel in any case.

Fifth-year option exercised
The Dolphins officially picked up Tagovailoa's fifth-year option Monday.
ANALYSIS
Miami's decision to exercise Tagovailoa's fifth-year option, giving him a guaranteed $23.2 million salary for the 2024 season, is a sign of confidence in the young signal-caller. The 25-year-old excelled in coach Mike McDaniel's system with top receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle before concussions derailed his 2022 campaign, as he led the NFL in passer rating for much of the early season. Tagovailoa has since cleared the concussion protocol, and as Mike Gavin of NBC New York reports, his offseason training thus far has prioritized techniques for avoiding future head injuries. Even with Mike Gesicki having moved to the Patriots in free agency, Tagovailoa looks primed to again lead an explosive offense in the 2023 season.

Fifth-year option to be picked up
The Dolphins have informed Tagovailoa that they plan to pick up his fifth-year contract option, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Adam Schefter of ESPN report.
ANALYSIS
As a result, Tagovailoa is in line to be guaranteed $23.2 million for the coming season. By picking up his option, the Dolphins are essentially demonstrating their confidence that the No. 5 overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft can effectively helm the team's offense in 2024. The 25-year-old is coming off a 2022 campaign in which he was hampered by concussion issues that limited him to 13 contests. Since the conclusion the regular season, however, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN relays that Tagovailoa has cleared the league's concussion protocol, putting the QB in a position to return to football activities once the Dolphins re-take the field.

Clears concussion protocol
Tagovailoa has cleared the NFL's concussion protocols, and the Dolphins are confident he'll be 100 percent for the 2023 campaign, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa was diagnosed with two concussions during the 2022 regular season, and the second one, which occurred against Green Bay on Christmas Day, ultimately sidelined him for the remainder of the campaign. In early January, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said Miami had been told by doctors that Tagovailoa's recent head injuries won't leave him prone to more concussions in the future, so the team feels confident the Alabama product can still be a franchise quarterback moving forward.
Jan 27, 2023
Won't participate in Pro Bowl Games
Tagovailoa remains in the NFL's concussion protocol and won't participate in next week's Pro Bowl Games, according to Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.
ANALYSIS
The report notes that Tagovailoa, who had been named a first-alternate Pro Bowler, hasn't experienced any setbacks, but the Dolphins are proceeding deliberately with the QB, with his long-term health in mind. Earlier this month, GM Chris Grier indicated that the franchise will approach the 2023 season with Tagovailoa as its starting signal-caller, based on the belief (via doctors the team has spoken to) that Tagovailoa's past concussions won't leave him more prone to head injuries going forward.
Jan 15, 2023
Expected back as starter in 2023
Tagovailoa (concussion) is expected to return as the Dolphins' starting quarterback during the 2023 season, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa is already ruled out for Sunday's wild-card game against the Bills as he continues to progress through the concussion protocol. Should Miami advance further in the playoffs, it appears that Tagovailoa could have a chance of gaining full medical clearance and retaking the field, but regardless of Sunday's outcome the quarterback has now made a decision on his long-term playing future. The 24-year-old hasn't yet been cleared to resume football activities since suffering his second documented concussion of the season late December, but Schefter reports that medical professionals have advised that Tagovailoa will be able to continue his NFL career when back to full health. For Sunday's wild-card matchup, Skylar Thompson is set to draw another start while Teddy Bridgewater (finger/knee) remains questionable but could be active in a backup capacity.
Jan 11, 2023
Won't play Sunday
Coach Mike McDaniel noted Wednesday that Tagovailoa (concussion) has yet to be cleared for football activities and won't play in Sunday's playoff opener against the Bills, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
For now, the Dolphins are preparing as though Skylar Thompson will draw the start at QB for the team this weekend, while at this stage Teddy Bridgewater (knee/finger) is still working toward being available Sunday. As for Tagovailoa, McDaniel indicated that the signal caller hasn't had any setbacks, but added that there are "compounding variables" that are being considered in determining Tagovailoa's status moving forward.
Jan 9, 2023
Not yet cleared for football activity
Coach Mike McDaniel noted Monday that Tagovailoa (concussion) has not yet been cleared for football activity, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Louis-Jacques notes that the Dolphins are hoping to have added clarity on the QB's status Wednesday, while adding that Tagovailoa hasn't experienced any setbacks. As the team's playoff opener this coming weekend against the Bills approaches, Tagovailoa's availability remains uncertain, but McDaniel did relay Monday that he believes Teddy Bridgewater, who has been dealing with a finger injury as well as a knee issue, may have been in a position to have entered Sunday's game against the Jets if Week 18 starter Skylar Thompson had been forced to exit the contest.
Jan 6, 2023
Ruled out for Week 18
Tagovailoa (concussion) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Jets, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
It will be up to Skylar Thompson to try to guide the Dolphins to a playoff berth, as Miami needs to beat the Jets and hope the Bills defeat the Patriots. Tagovailoa has yet to resume practicing, while Teddy Bridgewater (finger) may be available in a backup role Sunday, so Bridgewater seems more likely to suit up for a potential playoff game should Miami sneak in.
Jan 2, 2023
Unlikely to play in Week 18
Head coach Mike McDaniel said Monday that he's not even thinking about Tagovailoa (concussion) starting in Week 18, suggesting the quarterback is unlikely to suit up Sunday against the Jets, Travis Wingfield of the Dolphins' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
McDaniel added that he's preparing as if Skylar Thompson and Teddy Bridgewater (finger) will be his top options for the regular season finale, and that he hasn't even talked with Tagovailoa about when the quarterback will be able to play again, per Adam H. Beasley of ProFootballNetwork.com. The coach's comments contradict a report Sunday from Fox's Jay Glazer, who said Tagovailoa plans to play again this season if the Dolphins make the playoffs. Either way, it appears Miami will be without its starting quarterback due to a concussion for yet another contest this year.
Jan 1, 2023
Possible for playoffs
Tagovailoa (concussion) plans to play again this season if the Dolphins make the playoffs, Fox's Jay Glazer reports.
ANALYSIS
Obviously that decision isn't fully in Tagovailoa's hands, both from the standpoint of the Dolphins making the playoffs, and in terms of getting clearance from the concussion protocol. Glazer didn't directly state it, but it also suggests that Tagovailoa won't play in Week 18 against the Jets.
Dec 30, 2022
Won't play Sunday
Coach Mike McDaniel confirmed Friday that Tagovailoa (concussion) is out for Sunday's game against the Patriots, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com and David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel report.
ANALYSIS
As a result, Teddy Bridgewater is slated to start at QB for the Dolphins on Sunday, with Tagovailoa still in the NFL's concussion protocol. Per Louis-Jacques, Tagovailoa's status beyond Week 17 has yet to be determined, with McDaniel having declined to put a timetable on the signal-caller's potential return.
Dec 28, 2022
Not in line to start Sunday
With Tagovailoa in the NFL's concussion protocol for the second time this season, the Dolphins are preparing Teddy Bridgewater to start Sunday's game against the Patriots, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Mike McDaniel noted Wednesday that Tagovailoa is being evaluated on a day-to-day basis, adding that there is no timetable for the QB's return to game action. With that in mind, we'd expect Tagovailoa -- who missed two games due to a concussion earlier this season -- to be officially ruled out ahead of Week 17 action, with his status beyond this weekend unclear.
Dec 28, 2022
Concussion confirmed
Coach Mike McDaniel confirmed Wednesday that Tagovailoa did sustain a concussion during Sunday's loss to the Packers, Travis Wingfield of the Dolphins' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa was placed in the NFL's concussion protocol Monday due to symptoms reported after Sunday's loss. Per Hal Habib of The Palm Beach Post, McDaniel said the Dolphins will approach Sunday's divisional road matchup against the Patriots with the expectation of Teddy Bridgewater starting. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that McDaniel declined to note whether the team will approach Tagovailoa's recovery with extra caution, given that this is his third time this season being evaluated for a concussion due to an in-game hit. Last time Tagovailoa was placed in the five-step concussion protocol, he missed two games.
Dec 26, 2022
In concussion protocol
Coach Mike McDaniel relayed Monday that Tagovailoa is in the NFL's concussion protocol, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
As a result, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald notes that Teddy Bridgewater is slated to get the majority of the Dolphins' QB reps Wednesday and Thursday and would be in line to start Sunday against the Patriots if Tagovailoa is unable to progress through concussion protocol.
Dec 25, 2022
Falls apart in second half
Tagovailoa completed 16 of 25 passes for 310 yards and a touchdown with three interceptions in Sunday's 26-20 loss to the Packers.
ANALYSIS
It was a tale of two halves for Tagovailoa, who racked up 229 yards and his only TD before halftime but threw for only 81 yards and tossed all three of his picks after the break to squander a 20-13 lead. The third-year quarterback has been picked off in only four of his 13 starts this season, but he's tossed multiple INTs in three of those games, making him a volatile option in Week 17's road game against a Patriots team fighting for its playoff life.
Dec 17, 2022
Modest performance in close loss
Tagovailoa completed 17 of 30 passes for 234 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Dolphins' 32-29 loss to the Bills on Saturday night. He also rushed once for seven yards and committed a fumble recovered by Miami.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa certainly was more efficient than in his disastrous Week 14 performance against the Chargers, but he still only completed 56.7 percent of his passes in a game that eventually saw the advent of snowy conditions. Tagovailoa's best quarter was the third, when he completed 67- and 20-yard scoring tosses to Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill, respectively. Twelve of Tagovailoa's 17 completions went to the dynamic duo, but the fact Miami couldn't muster any touchdowns during the entirety of the fourth quarter ultimately sunk its chances of offsetting Buffalo's comeback. Tagovailoa next opportunity to bounce back to his previous level of production comes in what is now an especially critical Christmas Day afternoon matchup against the Packers at home in Week 16.
Dec 12, 2022
Completes just 10 passes
Tagovailoa (ankle) completed 10 of 28 pass attempts for 145 yards and a touchdown while adding 28 yards on three rushing attempts in Sunday's 23-17 loss to the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa turned in his worst performance of the season against a Chargers secondary that was without star safety Derwin James. The 24-year-old completed just 36 percent of his passes one week after completing a season-low 55 percent against the 49ers. Tagovailoa was cleared of the minor ankle injury he suffered in Week 13, but perhaps his putrid performance indicates that he wasn't at full strength. On a positive note, the southpaw was able to reincorporate the rushing aspect of his fantasy game after compiling zero rushing yards over his last four games. Tua and the Dolphins will look to rebound in a pivotal AFC East matchup against the Bills on Saturday.
Dec 9, 2022
Cleared to play Sunday
Tagovailoa (ankle) doesn't carry an injury designation for Sunday night's game against the Chargers after returning to a full practice Friday, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa was a limited participant at practice Wednesday and Thursday, but the QB's return to a full session Friday sets the stage for him to start Sunday night's game. Working in his favor from a fantasy perspective is that top wideouts Tyreek Hill (illness) and Jaylen Waddle (fibula) also practiced fully Friday and have both been cleared for Week 14 action.
Dec 7, 2022
Logs limited practice Wednesday
Tagovailoa (ankle) was limited at practice Wednesday, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network previously relayed that Tagovailoa -- who suffered an ankle injury late in the Dolphins' Week 13 loss to the 49ers -- could have returned to the game and is expected to start this weekend on the road against the Chargers. That said, the QB's listed limitations Wednesday make his status worth tracking and confirming ahead of Sunday's night's 8:20 ET kickoff.
Dec 4, 2022
Expected to start next week
Tagovailoa (ankle) could have returned to Sunday's game against the 49ers and is expected to start next Sunday against the Chargers, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa was banged up when he fumbled on a sack during the closing minutes of Sunday's matchup and was replaced by Skylar Thompson for the Dolphins' final possession. Tagovailoa downplayed the severity of his injury during his postgame press conference but said that he'd continue to be assessed. He doesn't appear to be dealing with a significant injury and is unlikely to miss time.
Dec 4, 2022
Downplays severity of injury
Tagovailoa (ankle) said after Sunday's loss to the 49ers that he feels "as good as I can be coming off a game," Adam H. Beasley of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa was kept off the field for the Dolphins' final drive Sunday and was listed as questionable to return. He said during his postgame press conference that he'll have a few things assessed, but he didn't seem too concerned about his availability going forward. His status for next Sunday's game against the Chargers will likely come into focus based on his availability at practice this week.
Dec 4, 2022
Dealing with ankle injury
Tagovailoa suffered an ankle injury during Sunday's loss to the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa fumbled on a sack in the closing minutes of Sunday's matchup and was replaced by Skylar Thompson for the Dolphins' final drive of the game. Tagovailoa completed 18 of 33 pass attempts for 295 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions prior to leaving Sunday's game, and it's not yet clear whether the issue will impact his availability for next Sunday's game against the Chargers. Teddy Bridgewater (knee) has been inactive for six consecutive games, so Thompson would likely draw the Week 14 start if Tagovailoa is unavailable.
Dec 4, 2022
O-line a worry for Week 13
Tagovailoa may have to suit up for Sunday's road matchup against the 49ers without the protection of his two top tackles, with Austin Jackson (ankle) out and Terron Armstead (pectoral) doubtful, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The Dolphins will likely start Brandon Shell and Greg Little at left and right tackle, respectively, neither of whom boast the type of reliability desired against a dangerous 49ers' pass rush headlined by Nick Bosa. Last week's matchup against the Texans saw Tagovailoa make an early exit not just because of Miami's convincing 30-0 around halftime, but because the young quarterback was sacked multiple times after Jackson and Armstead both departed with injuries. The Dolphins' coaching staff is adaptable and will doubtless scheme specifically to account for an O-line missing its top players, but Tagovailoa could nonetheless face tremendous difficulty overcoming pressure during Sunday's matchup. It's possible Miami could lean more heavily than usual on Jeff Wilson and Raheem Mostert, both ex-49ers, in the run game.
Nov 27, 2022
Impressive in home win
Tagovailoa completed 22 of 36 passes for 299 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in the Dolphins' 30-15 win over the Texans on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa helped the Dolphins to points in five of their six first-half possessions, leading to a 30-0 lead that eventually facilitated an early exit for the star quarterback. While he was in there, Tagovailoa did an exemplary job of distributing the ball, hitting nine different pass catchers for completions overall, including reserve tight end Durham Smythe for his one touchdown pass. The 2020 first-round pick's three-game streak of multi-touchdown efforts was snapped, but he'll take the surging Dolphins into a Week 13 road showdown against the 49ers with an elite 19:3 TD:INT and no less than 261 passing yards in any of his last five contests.
Nov 13, 2022
Three more TDs in win
Tagovailoa completed 25 of 32 passes for 284 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in the Dolphins' 39-17 win over the Browns on Sunday. He also rushed once for no gain and recovered a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa put together another impressive performance through the air, although in Sunday's case, he took a bit of the road less traveled for a lot of his production. No Dolphins pass catcher recorded more than Jaylen Waddle's 66 yards, and Tagovailoa connected with eight different targets overall. Tagovailoa did hit Tyreek Hill for one of his trio of scores, but his other two touchdown passes went to the unlikely duo of Trent Sherfield and Alec Ingold. The third-year signal-caller will head into a Week 11 bye having put together three consecutive three-touchdown efforts and sporting an 18:3 TD:INT overall.
Nov 6, 2022
Continues surge in Week 9 win
Tagovailoa completed 21 of 30 passes for 302 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in the Dolphins' 35-32 win over the Bears on Sunday. He also netted no gain on five rushes and fumbled once but recovered.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa authored his third 300-yard effort of the season, albeit barely, while putting together his second straight 300-yard performance as well. The third-year signal-caller connected with Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and new arrival Jeff Wilson from three, 18 and 10 yards out, respectively, for his three scoring tosses, and he distributed the ball effectively while hitting six different targets overall. Tagovailoa will take a three-game interception-less streak into a Week 10 home matchup against a beatable Browns secondary.
Oct 30, 2022
Stellar numbers in Week 8 win
Tagovailoa completed 29 of 36 passes for 382 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions while adding 19 yards on five rushes in the Dolphins' 31-27 win over the Lions on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa opened the game hot and rarely let up, taking advantage of the highly porous Lions defense to help claw Miami back from an early 14-0 deficit. The third-year pro hit Jaylen Waddle with touchdown passes of five and 29 yards in the first and second quarters, respectively, and he capped off the scoring late in the third quarter with an 11-yard scoring strike to Mike Gesicki. Meanwhile, although he didn't have any end-zone connections with Tyreek Hill, he targeted the perennial Pro Bowler a team-high 14 times, connecting with him on 12 of those occasions for 188 yards. Sunday's stellar effort, despite the caliber of competition, served as a tangible reminder of Tagovailoa's outstanding chemistry with his two top receivers and command of head coach Mike McDaniel's offense. With his first 300-yard-plus/multi-touchdown tally since Week 2, Tagovailoa heads into a Week 9 road matchup against the Bears with an abundance of momentum.
Oct 24, 2022
Healthy return to action
Tagovailoa (concussion/ankle) completed 21 of 35 pass attempts for 261 yards and a touchdown while adding 15 yards on four carries in Sunday's 16-10 win over the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa returned to the field after a two-game layoff due to multiple injuries, leading his team to victory in a nationally-televised game in the process. The statistics weren't gaudy from a fantasy perspective, but managers should be pleased he made it through a full game after getting knocked out early the last time he returned from injury this season. With one of the best wide receiver duos at his disposal in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, Tagovailoa is an appealing fantasy option heading into a soft matchup against Detroit next Sunday.
Oct 19, 2022
Not on injury report
Tagovailoa isn't on the injury report ahead of Sunday's game against the Steelers, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa is expected to step back in as Miami's starting quarterback Sunday night against the Steelers, dropping Teddy Bridgewater back to the No. 2 spot. It's a favorable matchup on paper, though the Steelers' injury-riddled secondary looks to be getting healthier after a surprisingly good day from mostly backups in a 20-18 win over Tampa Bay this past Sunday.
Oct 17, 2022
Prepping for Week 7 start
Tagovailoa (concussion/ankle) is in line to prepare this week as the Dolphins' starting QB for Sunday night's game against the Steelers, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa, who hasn't suited up since Miami's loss to the Bengals on Sept. 29, is thus in line to return to the team's lineup after a two-game absence, barring any setbacks. Wednesday's injury report will reveal whether he's listed as a full or limited practice participant, but Adam Schefter of ESPN previously indicated that Tagovailoa was cleared from the NFL's concussion protocol Saturday.
Oct 16, 2022
In line to start Week 7
Tagovailoa (ankle), who is listed as out for Sunday's game against the Vikings but officially cleared the concussion protocol Saturday, will start Week 7 against the Steelers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The Dolphins may not formally appoint Tagovailoa to the starting role until after they conclude their three Week 7 practices, but in the absence of any setbacks, the quarterback's two-game absence will come to an end. Skylar Thompson is slated to make his first NFL start against the Vikings, while Teddy Bridgewater will serve as his backup after clearing the concussion protocol Saturday but having managed only one full practice this week.
Oct 15, 2022
Clears protocol, still out Sunday
Tagovailoa cleared concussion protocols but is not expected to play Sunday against the Vikings, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The Dolphins appear to be operating with practice time in mind as both Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater were cleared from concussion protocols Saturday, but both are expected to backup rookie Skylar Thompson as neither were able to practice this week. Pelissero notes the three-year starter flew to multiple specialists to confirm the clearing of concussion protocols and suffered no setbacks throughout the two-week absence. As a result the 2020 first-round pick is expected to start in primetime against a vulnerable Steelers defense in Week 7.
Oct 14, 2022
Takes step forward in protocol
Tagovailoa (concussion/ankle), who is listed as out for Sunday's game against the Vikings, was a full participant in Friday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Miami decided early in the week that Tagovailoa will miss his second game in a row, and while the quarterback remains in the concussion protocol, his advancement to full participation in practice suggests he's on the doorstep of gaining full medical clearance. Assuming Tagovailoa maintains full practice activity during the upcoming week and receives the green light from an independent neurologist to return to the field, he could be on track to reclaim the Dolphins' starting quarterback duties Oct. 23 against the Steelers. As for this week, the Dolphins plan to have third-stringer Skylar Thompson make his first career NFL start while No. 2 option Teddy Bridgewater (concussion/pectoral) -- who is listed as questionable -- likely handles backup duties since he didn't resume practicing fully until Friday.
Oct 12, 2022
Confirmed out for Week 6
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said that he's excited to have Tagovailoa back at practice Wednesday, but the quarterback won't be active for Sunday's game against the Vikings, Safid Deen of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, McDaniel said he's tentatively planning on having rookie Skylar Thompson make his first career start at quarterback this weekend, though McDaniel acknowledged that Teddy Bridgewater -- who filled in for Tagovailoa in the Week 5 loss to the Jets before suffering a concussion of his own -- could clear the five-step protocol before Sunday. At this point, however, McDaniel said that Bridgewater is in the second phase of the protocol, according to Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com, and Tagovailoa looks to be at a similar spot in his recovery from the concussion he sustained in the Sept. 29 loss to the Bengals. McDaniel told Louis-Jacques that Tagovailoa will throw and go through individual drills at Wednesday's practice, and if he continues to avoid setbacks in his recovery from the concussion, he could mix into team work later in the week or early next week. At least for the time being, Tagovailoa looks like he could realistically return to the lineup as soon as the Dolphins'
Oct 12, 2022
Will practice, unlikely to play
Tagovailoa (concussion) will return to the practice field Wednesday and resume throwing, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa reportedly remains 'highly unlikely' for Week 6 even in the event that he clears the concussion protocol, which his return to practice Wednesday represents a step towards. The third-year quarterback hasn't practiced in any capacity since Sept. 29, though Pelissero reports he has done rehab work and consulted with four independent specialists. With Teddy Bridgewater (concussion) and Tagovailoa seemingly still not an immediate candidate to return to the lineup, Miami could have to turn to third-string man Skylar Thompson under center against the Vikings on Sunday. In any case, though, it's a positive sign to see Tagovailoa progressing in his recovery.
Oct 7, 2022
Not traveling with team
Tagovailoa (concussion) will not travel with the Dolphins for Sunday's game against the Jets, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa will not travel with the team Week 5 as he continues to work through the concussion protocol, a process that coach Mike McDaniel confirmed has involved meeting with multiple specialists. McDaniel also denied the possibility of Tagovailoa going on injured reserve today or tomorrow, but said the team is still gathering information. A timetable for the young quarterback's recovery remains undisclosed, but it looks like Miami isn't willing to rule him out for the next four games. Teddy Bridgewater will hold down the fort under center until Tagovailoa is back to full health.
Oct 3, 2022
Out Week 5, at least
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel announced Monday that Tagovailoa (concussion) has been ruled out for the team's Week 5 game versus the Jets, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
McDaniel said it's too early to provide a definite timetable for Tagovailoa's return, but Teddy Bridgewater is in line for at least one start. Tagovailoa is in the Dolphins' practice facilities but still in the league's concussion protocol, which he will need to fully clear before retaking the field can be discussed. Though it's relieving that MRI results on Tagovailoa's neck came back negative, it still seems likely that Miami takes a cautious approach to his recovery, so the possibility of Bridgewater making multiple starts can't be ruled out.
Oct 2, 2022
MRI results negative
Tagovailoa (concussion) has received 'clean' results on all medical examinations, including an MRI on his neck, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa remains in the league's concussion protocol, but he's at least avoided suffering any fractures in his neck or similar injuries. Coach Mike McDaniel has declined to offer an expected recovery timetable for the third-year quarterback, per Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com, saying "it's all about Tua the person." Teddy Bridgewater would be in line to start Week 5 versus the Jets if Tagovailoa is unavailable, and it certainly seems likely that the Dolphins will proceed cautiously with his recovery. Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, Tagovailoa is expected to be interviewed next week as part of the NFL's and NFLPA's investigation into his having been cleared to retake the field Week 3 versus the Bills. Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports that the unaffiliated neurotrama consultant involved in clearing Tagovailoa versus Buffalo has been fired as a result of the NFLPA's initial findings.
Sep 30, 2022
Timetable for return TBD
Coach Mike McDaniel relayed Friday that he has no timetable for when Tagovailoa, who is in the NFL's concussion protocol, might be able to return to action, ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
"I'm not even really thinking about timetables or anything regarding him as a player right now," McDaniel said of Tagovailoa, who was stretchered off the field during Thursday's game against the Bengals. "It's all about Tua the person." For now, the Dolphins are awaiting the results of an MRI that Tagovailoa underwent, but given what's transpired in the last two games the QB has played in, look for the team to proceed cautiously with Tagovailoa ahead of Miami's Week 5 contest against the Jets on Oct. 9. If Tagovailoa is sidelined at that time, Teddy Bridgewater would be in line to start in his place versus New York.
Sep 30, 2022
Set for MRI, initial scans negative
Tagovailoa (concussion/neck) traveled back with teammates after Thursday's loss to the Bengals and is scheduled for an MRI on his neck Friday, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa traveled back with the team while wearing a neck brace, but initial testing revealed that he hasn't suffered any broken bones. Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports that that current indications about the quarterback are positive, while Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald confirms that Tagovailoa is now officially in the league's concussion protocol and will continue to be monitored closely. Teddy Bridgewater will be in line to start Week 5 versus the Jets if Tagovailoa isn't able to reach full medical clearance over the next 10 days, and there's no question that the 24-year-old's long-term health ought to be Miami's top concern.
Sep 29, 2022
Set to travel back with team
Tagovailoa (head/neck) will be released from the hospital Thursday night and travel back to Miami with his teammates, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa was transported to the hospital after sustaining head and neck injuries in Thursday's 27-15 loss to the Bengals, but he feels good enough to leave the hospital and board the flight back to Miami. Coach Mike McDaniel said after the game that Tagovailoa has been placed in the concussion protocol, per
Sep 29, 2022
Transferred to hospital
Tagovailoa has been transferred to University of Cincinnati Medical Center after sustaining head and neck injuries Thursday against the Bengals, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports. He is conscious and has movement in all of his extremities.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa's head hit the ground on a sack in the second quarter and he required a stretcher to leave the field. He was slammed hard into the ground for a second consecutive game, and while Tagovailoa was able to return to last week's win over the Bills, the quarterback has already been ruled out for the remainder of Thursday's game. Teddy Bridgewater came in after Tagovailoa's injury, and Miami also has third-string quarterback Skylar Thompson dressed due to the uncertainty over Tagovailoa's health coming into the game.

Stretchered off against Bengals
Tagovailoa (back) was stretchered off the field in the second quarter of Thursday's game against the Bengals, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa stayed down after being slammed into the ground on a sack by Josh Tupou. Miami's quarterback came into the game nursing back and ankle injuries, and he hit the ground hard with his back and helmet. Clarification on the nature and extent of Tua's injury will likely come after further testing, but he's unlikely to return to Thursday's game after completing eight of 14 passes for 110 yards and one interception. Teddy Bridgewater replaced Tagovailoa after the injury.

Suits up Thursday
Tagovailoa (back/ankle) is listed as active for Thursday night's game against the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa, who briefly left this past Sunday's win over the Bills, was listed as a limited practice participant on the Dolphins' Tuesday and Wednesday injury reports before being deemed questionable for Thursday's contest. In the absence of any in-game setbacks with either his back or ankle issues, Tagovailoa should be able to maintain fantasy utility in Week 4 while helming a Miami passing attack that features dynamic wideouts Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, who is in uniform versus Cincinnati after also having approached the game listed as questionable.
Sep 29, 2022
Expected to play Thursday
Tagovailoa (back/ankle) is expected to suit up for Thursday's game in Cincinnati, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa is officially listed as questionable on Miami's injury report, but he's said he plans to play and things still appear to be trending in that direction. Having the third-year quarterback under center will be good news for the fantasy prospects of top wideouts Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle (groin), though the latter is also listed as questionable. The Dolphins would turn to Teddy Bridgewater were Tagovailoa to suffer any setbacks, but it's expected that Miami's No. 1 QB will avoid the official inactives list, which will be released slightly before 7 p.m. ET.
Sep 28, 2022
Deemed questionable, plans to play
Tagovailoa (back) said he plans to play in Thursday's game against Cincinnati, though he's officially listed as questionable on the final injury report, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
It sounds like Tagovailoa would be listed as 'probable' if the designation still existed. Still, fantasy managers should make sure he's active when the Dolphins release their inactive list a little before 7 p.m. ET on Thursday. Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle (groin) also is listed as questionable and like Tagovailoa seems to be on track to play.
Sep 27, 2022
Viewed as questionable for Thursday
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said Tagovailoa (back/ankle) would have been a limited participant if the team practiced Tuesday and is considered questionable for Thursday's matchup against the Bengals, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
McDaniel added that he expects a decision on a starting quarterback to come sometime Wednesday, noting that the quarterback's ability to play will be matter of pain tolerance and functionality, according to Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com. Per Jackson, McDaniel added that he expects "most, if not all" of the eight players listed on the estimated injury report Monday to play Thursday, which would include Tagovailoa and Jaylen Waddle (groin). However, if Tagovailoa isn't available, Teddy Bridgewater would step in the Dolphins' starting signal-caller against Cincinnati.
Sep 26, 2022
Listed DNP on estimated report
Tagovailoa (back) was listed as a non-participant on Monday's estimated practice report, per Travis Wingfield of the Dolphins' official site.
ANALYSIS
The Dolphins didn't practice Monday, but as expected, Tagovailoa wouldn't have been able to participate after getting banged up during Sunday's win over the Bills. Head coach Mike McDaniel said earlier Monday that the quarterback is dealing with back and ankle soreness and was noncommittal about his status for Thursday's game against the Bengals. Tagovailoa briefly exited during the second quarter of Sunday's win after he stumbled trying to make it back to the sideline following a third-down sack. McDaniel confirmed that the lefty isn't in concussion protocols, per Hal Habib of The Palm Beach Post, but the league is going to investigate Miami's handling of the situation this week. If Tagovailoa ultimately can't go on a short week, Teddy Bridgewater would led Miami's revamped offense in Week 4.

Nursing soreness ahead of TNF game
Coach Mike McDaniel said Monday that Tagovailoa is dealing with back and ankle soreness and was noncommittal about his status for Thursday's game against the Bengals, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa briefly exited during the second quarter of Sunday's narrow win over the Bills, when he stumbled to his feet following a sack, but McDaniel confirms that the quarterback isn't in the concussion protocol, per Hal Habib of The Palm Beach Post. It sounds like the Dolphins will monitor Tagovailoa throughout practice this week before making a decision about his status versus the Bengals on Thursday. If Tagovailoa can't go on a short week, it would fall to Teddy Bridgewater to attempt to keep Miami's offense on track.
Sep 25, 2022
Dealt with back issues in win
Tagovailoa, who completed 13 of 18 passes for 186 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions and netted no gain on one rush in the Dolphins' 21-19 win over the Bills on Sunday, dealt with a back injury during the first half, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The third-year quarterback exited the game late in the first half with what was believed to be a head injury and was eventually cleared for a concussion. Tagovailoa was able to play the second half without interruption, but Rapoport notes the signal-caller's back was injured on a first-quarter sneak before locking up after the second-quarter sack that forced him from the contest. Nevertheless, Tagovailoa's ability to finish the game and his highly efficient performance overall are both highly encouraging with a short week ahead of a Week 4 road matchup against the Bengals on Thursday night.

Returns to Sunday's game
Tagovailoa (head) has returned to Sunday's game against the Bills, Matt Parrino of The Syracuse Post-Standard reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa took a hard hit from linebacker Matt Milano in the first half and went to the locker room. However, he cleared concussion protocols during halftime and returned for the first drive of the second half.
Sep 25, 2022
Exits Sunday's game
Tagovailoa was forced out of Sunday's game against the Bills due to a head injury.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa headed to the locker Sunday absorbing a hit from linebacker Matt Milano, per Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network. In his absence, Teddy Bridgewater is in at quarterback for the Dolphins.
Sep 18, 2022
Explodes for career-best effort
Tagovailoa completed 36 of 50 passes for 469 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions in the Dolphins' 42-38 win over the Ravens on Sunday. He also rushed once for one yard.
ANALYSIS
After facing no shortage of adversity over his first two-plus seasons, Tagovailoa appeared to be on a mission to silence his ample pool of doubters in one half during a miraculous comeback Sunday. The 2020 first-round pick unsurprisingly focused heaviest on his explosive wideout duo of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle to the tune of 22 completions, 361 yards and four of his touchdown passes, but he also connected with Mike Gesicki and River Cracraft for his two other scores. Tagovailoa began the comeback with a 14-yard scoring toss to the veteran tight end in the third quarter, while 48- and 60-yard connections with Hill in the fourth quarter led to a 35-35 tie. The third-year signal-caller then topped off his career-best effort with a seven-yard scoring throw to Waddle for Miami's final points of the day with 14 seconds remaining. Tagovailoa and the Dolphins' lethal air attack may have quite the task putting together a successful encore, however, as a Week 3 home matchup against the Bills awaits next Sunday.
Sep 11, 2022
Beats Patriots again
Tagovailoa completed 23 of 33 passes for 270 yards and one touchdown in Sunday's 20-7 win over the Patriots. He also rushed twice for no gain.
ANALYSIS
After the defenses dominated for most of the first half, Tagovailoa finally produced the game's first offensive touchdown in the final minute of the second quarter by perfectly leading Jaylen Waddle, who outraced New England's secondary to the end zone to give the Dolphins a 17-0 lead. With Waddle and Tyreek Hill racking up plenty of yards after the catch, Tua's set up for success without taking too many chances downfield. He'll lead the Dolphins into Baltimore for Miami's first road game of the season in Week 2.
Aug 27, 2022
Looks sharp in tuneup
Tagovailoa completed six of seven passes for 121 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 48-10 preseason win over Philadelphia.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa uncorked a deep pass on the first play of the game, connecting with Tyreek Hill for a 51-yard completion. He otherwise completed passes in the short and intermediate areas of the field and was sharp for the second consecutive exhibition game. Tagovailoa will head into the regular season with plenty of momentum, as he completed 12 of 15 passes for 179 yards in two preseason contests.
Aug 27, 2022
Could play Saturday
Tagovailoa is available to play in Saturday's preseason finale against the Eagles, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
While Jaylen Waddle (undisclosed) isn't in line to play in the contest, fellow WR Tyreek Hill is available, but if Tagovailoa does indeed play Saturday, we'd expect his reps to be capped.
Aug 20, 2022
Sharp in preseason debut
Tagovailoa completed six of eight passes for 58 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in the Dolphins' 15-13 preseason loss to the Raiders on Saturday night.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa led a pair of relatively short drives to open the game and was able to help put the Dolphins in position for a Jason Sanders 46-yard field goal at the conclusion of the latter one. The 2020 first-round pick connected with four different targets during his brief time on the field, and Saturday night's action may have been the extent of what he'll see this preseason in the interest of keeping him healthy.
Aug 20, 2022
Likely playing Saturday
Tagovailoa is expected to play in Saturday's preseason game against the Raiders, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
The Dolphins have a few big names sitting out, including WR Jaylen Waddle (undisclosed), LT Terron Armstead and CB Xavien Howard. On the other hand, Tagovailoa and WR Tyreek Hill aren't listed among the names not expected to play, suggesting they'll suit up and take some snaps together for the first time outside a practice setting.
Aug 13, 2022
Not likely to play Saturday
Tagovailoa isn't expected to play in Saturday's preseason game in Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
Along with Tagovailoa, the Dolphins are keeping top wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle and running backs Chase Edmonds and Raheem Mostert on the sideline. In Tagovailoa's place, Teddy Bridgewater and rookie seventh-round pick Skylar Thompson will be under center for the team Saturday.
Aug 11, 2022
Not likely to play Saturday
Coach Mike McDaniel suggested Tuesday that Tagovailoa isn't likely to play in Saturday's preseason opener against the Bucs, though the Dolphins haven't made a final decision, Adam H. Beasley of Pro Football Network reports.
ANALYSIS
It's unclear if the final decision will be announced or something McDaniel keeps to himself. In the unlikely event Tagovailoa ends up playing, it would probably be for no more than a drive or two.

Connects with Hill at practice
Tagovailoa completed a couple of deep passes to Dolphins' newcomer Tyreek Hill during Thursday's minicamp session, ESPN's Marcel Louis-Jacques reports.
ANALYSIS
The QB's passes to Hill on Thursday went for 45 and 55 yards, and while we won't read too much into a pair of plays in mandatory minicamp, they did support the notion that Tagovailoa could progress as a downfield thrower in 2022. That's an area the signal-caller believes he can improve on in his third NFL campaign. With that in mind, Tagovailoa -- who indicated that he spent a majority of his offseason working on his foundation and improving his arm strength and mobility -- at this stage noted that he "definitely feel(s) a lot more confident being able to push the ball down the field." With a pair of top-flight wideouts to throw to (Hill and Jaylen Waddle), an improved offensive line in front of him, and a new coaching staff led by Mike McDaniel on board, Tagovailoa's team context at least does seem conducive to the 2020 first-rounder making strides this coming season.
May 24, 2022
Dealing with non-COVID illness
Tagovailoa was sent home during Tuesday's voluntary OTA practice due to a non-COVID illness, Adam H. Beasley of Pro Football Network reports.
ANALYSIS
It sounds like the quarterback tried to give it a go, but there's no reason to push him or risk spreading the illness around at this point in the offseason. New Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has made it clear that Tagovailoa will be his starter Week 1, though he could certainly face pressure from Teddy Bridgewater if he struggles out of the gate. Regardless, Miami's offseason is expected to look completely different this year with McDaniel at the helm and a litany of new offensive weapons at his disposal.
Mar 23, 2022
Leader of reloaded offense
Tagovailoa is positioned to lead a revamped Dolphins offense in the 2022 season, with Miami most recently having traded for six-time Pro Bowl wideout Tyreek Hill from the Chiefs on Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The Dolphins will surrender a litany of draft capital in exchange for Hill, giving up five picks headlined by a 2022 first-rounder and second-rounder, but the impact of pairing Hill with 2021 rookie standout Jaylen Waddle can't be overstated. Heading into what looks like a make-or-break Year 3 campaign, Tagovailoa will not only have the benefit of an improved receiving corps that also returns Mike Gesicki and DeVante Parker, but he will also no longer be forced to play behind a league-worst O-line, with Miami having added LT Terron Armstead (knee) and LG Connor Williams in free agency. Not only that, but coach Mike McDaniel could have a chance to finally provide Tagovailoa with a rushing game to rely on, given his success in San Francisco and the additions of Chase Edmonds and Raheem Mostert (knee). The flip side, of course, is that if Tagovailoa fails to make a leap forward in spite of all the offensive upgrades, he could quickly face pressure from new backup Teddy Bridgewater (concussion).
Feb 24, 2022
Focus of new offensive scheme
New Dolphins quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Darrell Bevell said Wednesday "the [offensive] system is going to be built and tailored to [Tagovailoa]," Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Bevell said Miami's scheme will be designed to "bring out all the positives in [Tagovailoa's] game," which reinforces comments from new coach Mike McDaniel about the team's commitment to the third-year quarterback. Tagovailoa's accuracy and ability to make off-schedule plays were praised by Bevell, though he also mentioned a need to clean up certain mechanics. The Dolphins seem likely to prioritize upgrading the O-line this offseason, and McDaniel's new system should also upgrade the running game and take further pressure off the young quarterback. Such developments could set the stage well for Tagovailoa to take a step forward Year 3, in what looks to be a make-or-break season for his prospects as a franchise leader.

Future in Miami looking murkier
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said Monday, after the firing of coach Brian Flores, that a decision on whether or not to stick with Tagovailoa under center will be up to the next coaching staff, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Ross said he "has a lot of confidence" in Tagovailoa, per Andrew Siciliano of NFL Network, but he also noted that it will be up to the next head coach to make a decision about the Dolphins' starting quarterback for 2022. When asked, Ross said he currently has "no plans" to pursue Deshaun Watson this offseason, per Safid Deen of the South Florida Sun Sentinel, but the fact that non-commmital langauge is being used to describe Tagovailoa's job security after a coaching change would seem to speak volumes. Prior to the 2021 in-season trade deadline, Miami reportedly pursued a potential deal involving Watson. Meanwhile, Tagovailoa finished with an uninspiring 17:10 TD:INT ratio and 2,762 passing yards across 14 appearances in his sophomore season, and he only reached the 300-yard mark through the air on one occasion. That said, he did showcase solid chemistry with rookie first-round pick Jaylen Waddle, and battle through both rib injuries and unreliable O-line play.
Jan 10, 2022
Quiet in Sunday's win
Tagovailoa completed 15 of 22 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown and gained 38 rushing yards on five carries in Sunday's 33-24 win over the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
Aside from a seven-yard TD strike to Jaylen Waddle in the first quarter, Tagovailoa didn't contribute much to the Dolphins' victory, instead allowing Duke Johnson and the defense to do most of the heavy lifting. The second-year QB failed to reach 200 passing yards in three of his last four games this season, wrapping up the campaign with a sharp 67.8 percent completion rate but far more pedestrian 17:10 TD:INT and 2,762 passing yards through 14 games, and Tua may not have done enough to dissuade the Dolphins from bringing in competition, or even an outright replacement for him, this offseason.
Jan 2, 2022
Scuffles in Week 17 loss
Tagovailoa completed 18 of 38 passes for 205 yards with no touchdowns and one interception in the Dolphins' 34-3 loss to the Titans on Sunday. He also rushed twice for one yard and committed three fumbles, losing one.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa's mess of a final line tells the tale of how forgettable an afternoon it was for both him and the Dolphins offense as a whole. The second-year signal-caller was kept out of sync all afternoon by an aggressive Titans defense that sacked him four times and limited him to 5.4 yards per attempt alongside a 53.1 QB rating. Tagovailoa helped just one pass catcher, Mike Gesicki, get over the 50-yard mark, and he threw an interception for the third straight game as well. The Dolphins are almost assuredly eliminated from postseason contention with the defeat, meaning Tagovailoa is likely to be playing for next season when Miami hosts the Patriots in Week 18.
Dec 27, 2021
Engineers another win
Tagovailoa completed 19 of 26 passes for 198 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Monday night's 20-3 win over the Saints.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa again relied heavily on wideout Jaylen Waddle's ability to create separation on underneath routes to move the ball. When he did take a shot downfield in the second half, Tagovailoa was intercepted on an overthrow. In fairness, though, the signal-caller responded with an impressive 40-yard pass to extend his subsequent drive, followed by a long completion to Waddle on a flea flicker the next play. Appropriately, Tagovailoa then capped that series with a one-yard touchdown to Waddle, giving the Dolphins a comfortable lead on the way to their seventh straight win. Although vertically-challenged for the most part in the passing attack, Tagovailoa's efficiency on short passes, particularly to Waddle, has been a successful formula that he'll strive to utilize again in Week 17 versus the Titans.
Dec 19, 2021
Overcomes miscues to top Jets
Tagovailoa completed 16 of 27 passes for 196 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's 31-24 win over the Jets. He added 19 yards on seven rushing attempts.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa got off to an awful start while adjusting to the absence of favorite target Jaylen Waddle (illness). He recovered his own fumble on the game's third play but was immediately tackled to create a 3-and-out on Miami's opening drive, then threw an interception on his first pass of the game to lead off the following drive. New York took advantage of Tua's early struggles and raced out to a 10-0 lead, but the Dolphins responded with a pair of Duke Johnson rushing touchdowns and a one-yard Tagovailoa touchdown pass to defensive lineman Christian Wilkins to take a 24-17 lead. Tua then tied it for the Jets with a pick-six but bounced back by throwing the game-winning touchdown to DeVante Parker from 11 yards out with 3:37 remaining. He led the Dolphins to a sixth consecutive win but will need to clean up the errors in order to extend that streak in Week 16 against the Saints.
Dec 5, 2021
Guides Dolphins to victory
Tagovailoa completed 30 of his 41 pass attempts for 244 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's 20-9 win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa reached 40 pass attempts for the third time this season and for the first time since Week 7. He put up a disappointing yardage total by averaging only 6.0 yards per attempt despite being accurate with his passes. That was product of largely working in short areas of the field, as he had only one completion of more than 20 yards. However, Tagovailoa salvaged his performance with two a pair of touchdowns, one from five yards away and the other from two. Tagovailoa has proven to have a safe floor of production in recent weeks, though he has topped 300 passing yards only once on the campaign.
Nov 28, 2021
Another efficient performance
Tagovailoa completed 27 of 31 passes for 230 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions in the Dolphins' 33-10 win over the Panthers on Sunday. He also netted no gain on four rushes and committed two fumbles, losing one.
ANALYSIS
The occasionally poor ball security was a blemish, but otherwise, it was hard to find fault with Tagovailoa's performance in a surprisingly comfortable win for the Dolphins. The second-year signal-caller kept up his hot hand from Week 11, when he'd completed a sensational 81.8 percent of his passes against the Jets. Tagovailoa was even sharper versus Carolina, connecting on a season-high 87.1 percent of his throws while notching completions to eight different pass catchers. Miami is now on a four-game winning streak and is setting itself up to potentially enter the outer edges of the playoff picture with another couple of victories, making it imperative Tagovailoa keeps up his strong play in a Week 13 home matchup versus the Giants.
Nov 21, 2021
Accurate in Week 11 win
Tagovailoa completed 27 of 33 passes for 273 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in Sunday's 24-17 win over the Jets. He added six rushing yards on three attempts.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa completed all six of his passes on the opening possession, which was eventually capped by a one-yard Jaylen Waddle rushing touchdown on a wildcat play. The next drive didn't go nearly as well, though, as Tua was intercepted and the Jets scored on their ensuing drive to tie it up. Neither team mustered any more points in the first half, but Tagovailoa broke the tie on Miami's first drive after halftime by finding Mack Hollins behind the Jets secondary for a 65-yard touchdown. He later capitalized on a generous roughing the passer penalty, which helped keep alive a fourth-quarter drive that Tua eventually capped with a five-yard touchdown to Myles Gaskin to give Miami the lead for good. Injuries have made it difficult for Tagovailoa to get into a rhythm this season, but he'll look to build on this encouraging performance in Week 12 against a tough Panthers defense.
Nov 19, 2021
Cleared for Week 11 start
Tagovailoa (finger) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Jets and has been cleared to start the contest, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa will reclaim starting duties from Jacoby Brissett for the first time since Week 8, though the Dolphins felt comfortable enough with the second-year signal-caller's health to use him in relief of Brissett in last week's upset win over the Ravens. Not only did Tagovailoa perform well off the bench in that contest, but he also closed the current week with a pair of full practices to assuage any lingering concern about his ability to play through a fractured middle finger on his throwing hand. According to Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com, head coach Brian Flores confirmed Friday that Tagovailoa has looked good in practice this week despite "pushing through" some lingering discomfort in the finger, suggesting the 23-year-old won't be subject to any limitations against New York.
Nov 18, 2021
Full participant in walk-through
Tagovailoa (left finger) was listed as a full participant in Thursday's walk-through, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Barring any setbacks, Tagovailoa remains on track to start Sunday's game against the Jets, though Friday's final injury report of the week will cement whether or not the QB heads into the weekend carrying a Week 11 injury designation.
Nov 17, 2021
Practicing with starters
Tagovailoa (finger) was a limited practice participant Wednesday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Brian Flores said Monday that he expected Tagovailoa to return to the starting lineup Sunday against the Jets, following an effective appearance off the bench in last Thursday's 22-10 win over Baltimore. The Dolphins do want to see how Tagovailoa looks in practice before they commit, as his finger apparently is still more of a concern than Jacoby Brissett's recent knee injury (Brissett was a full participant Wednesday). Tagovailoa is scheduled to take most of the first-team reps in practice this week, after Brissett did so last week, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports.
Nov 15, 2021
Set for Week 11 start
Coach Brian Flores said Monday that he expect Tagovailoa (finger) to start Sunday's game against the Jets, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa replaced Jacoby Brissett midway through Thursday's game against the Ravens and led the Dolphins to a win, though he only completed eight of 13 pass attempts for 158 yards without a touchdown or interception in the process. Though Flores mentioned that Tagovailoa injured his finger further Week 10 and played through discomfort, it looks like Miami is confident enough in the 2020 first-rounder's health that there aren't questions about his availability going forward. It's possible that Will Fuller (finger) could retake the field in time to face the Jets, though DeVante Parker (shoulder) isn't yet eligible to return from IR.
Nov 12, 2021
Week 11 starter TBD
Coach Brian Flores reiterated Friday that Tagovailoa is viewed as the Dolphins' top QB, but declined to confirm the 2020 first-rounder as the team's Week 11 starter versus the Jets, citing the finger injury Tagovailoa is still dealing with, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Jacoby Brissett drew the start at QB in Thursday's 22-10 win over the Raven because Flores believed that Tagovailoa's fractured middle finger (on his throwing hand) was affecting some of his throws. However, when Brissett left the game in the third quarter with a knee injury, Tagovailoa was called upon and finished out the contest, even though Brissett was subsequently cleared to return. While Tagovailoa performed admirably in relief, Flores relayed that the signal-caller fought through some discomfort Thursday and banged up his finger in the process. With that in mind, it seems likely that Tagovailoa is on track to be somewhat limited once Miami resumes practice in advance of the team's Nov. 21 matchup against the Jets. Meanwhile, Flores noted that although Brissett's knee appears okay, he will be evaluated further in the coming days.
Nov 12, 2021
Impressive in emergency duty
Tagovailoa (finger) entered Thursday night's 22-10 win over the Ravens for Jacoby Brissett (knee) with 11:46 remaining in the third quarter and completed eight of 13 passes for 158 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He also netted zero yards and a touchdown on three rushes and committed a fumble that was recovered by the Dolphins.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa slotted in as Brissett's emergency backup for the second straight game, and this time, he was called into duty for almost an entire half. The second-year signal-caller turned in an admirable effort in the victory and led scoring marches of 53 and 75 yards, the latter which he closed out with a one-yard touchdown run after the Ravens had closed to within five points. The fact Tagovailoa threw the ball well despite the fracture on the middle finger of his throwing hand is certainly encouraging, and David Furones of the Sun Sentinel reports that head coach Brian Flores stated the 2020 first-round pick was "close" and "a lot better than last week" in terms of potentially drawing the start Thursday. However, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports that Tagovailoa said after the game he did bang up the finger during the contest and was grateful for the 10 days of healing time before Miami's Week 11 road divisional clash with the Jets.
Nov 11, 2021
Won't start Thursday night
Tagovailoa, who is dealing with a fracture in the middle finger of his left hand, is slated to back up Jacoby Brissett in Thursday night's game against the Ravens, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
With Tagovailoa not quite ready to reclaim Miami's starting QB role as he continues to recover from his finger injury, Brissett will make his second consecutive start. Tagovailoa will now look to bounce back in time to get the nod when the Dolphins take on the Jets on Nov. 21.
Nov 10, 2021
Likely game-day decision
Tagovailoa (finger) is listed as questionable for Thursday's game against Baltimore, Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Beasley suggests the Dolphins will make a game-day decision on their starting QB again, after tabbing Jacoby Brissett as the starter and Tagovailoa as the backup in the hours before Sunday's 17-9 win over the Texans. Coach Brian Flores said Tagovailoa wouldn't have been healthy enough to start if the Dolphins had to play their Week 10 contest against the Ravens on Tuesday, but the team is holding out hope that its young QB might be ready a couple days later for Thursday Night Football.
Nov 9, 2021
Listed as limited on report
The Dolphins listed Tagovailoa (finger) as a limited participant on Tuesday's estimated practice report, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Miami listed Tagovailoa as a limited participant in each of their three practices last week due to a fractured left middle finger and a rib issue before he was ultimately active for Sunday's win over the Texans, but only available as an emergency backup. A similar fate could await Tagovailoa in Week 10, as the Dolphins face a quick turnaround with a Thursday night matchup against Baltimore. The Dolphins' decision to list Tagovailoa as limited on both of its first two practice reports of the week -- albeit with only one injury attached to his name -- doesn't seem to imply that the second-year signal-caller has made much meaningful progress in his recovery. For what it's worth, head coach Brian Flores told Oyefusi that Tagovailoa resumed throwing Monday and looked good, but the 23-year-old remains day-to-day. Flores added that if the Dolphins were playing Tuesday, Jacoby Brissett would be making his second straight start, according to Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com.

Will back up if he can't start
Tagovailoa (finger) will serve as the emergency backup quarterback Thursday against the Ravens if he's unable to start the game, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Networkreports.
ANALYSIS
Similar to last week, Tagovailoa would be the emergency option against the Ravens if he doesn't make enough progress in the next couple of days to give it a go. Jacoby Brissett filled in serviceable in a spot start last week against Houston and would be in line to face Baltimore if Tagovailoa isn't cleared.
Nov 8, 2021
Limited at walkthrough
Tagovailoa (left finger) is listed as limited on the Dolphins' practice estimate Monday, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
The fact that Tagovailoa only has one injury next to his name versus the two he dealt with last week indicates he finally may be past the fractured ribs that sidelined him Weeks 3 through 5. But he was unable to play Week 9 against the Texans due to a small fracture in the middle finger on his left hand, despite being active. The Dolphins held a walkthrough Monday, during which Tagovailoa was expected to resume throwing. Considering he wasn't a non-participant, he may have done just that, but his status nonetheless bears watching as the Dolphins get ready for Thursday's matchup with the Ravens. If the second-year signal-caller doesn't start Week 10, Tagovailoa again will yield QB duties to Jacoby Brissett.
Nov 8, 2021
To resume throwing Monday
Coach Brian Flores said Monday that Tagovailoa (finger/ribs) has not yet resumed throwing but is expected to do so Monday, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa was active for Sunday's game against the Texans in an emergency capacity, but he did not take the field due to left middle finger and rib. The second-year signal-caller is reportedly considered day-to-day in advance of Thursday's game against the Ravens, so it's will be encouraging if he's indeed able to resume throwing. However, Will Fuller (finger) has already been ruled out for Week 10.
Nov 7, 2021
Day-to-day in advance of TNF
Tagovailoa (left finger/ribs) is viewed as day-to-day by coach Brian Flores as Thursday night's game against the Ravens approaches, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Flores adds that Tagovailoa wanted to play Sunday, but the QB was too limited by his finger injury to start, leaving him to back up Jacoby Brissett in the Dolphins' 17-9 win over the Texans. In any case, while Tagovailoa hasn't been ruled out for Thursday's contest, he may be hard-pressed to bounce back in time for it, given the quick turnaround involved.
Nov 7, 2021
Active, but unlikely to play
Tagovailoa (finger/rib) is active for Sunday's game against the Jaguars, but he's not expected to start and will instead likely be available as an emergency backup, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa was listed as questionable heading into the weekend with left middle finger and rib injuries, but the former issue was always viewed as the greater concern with regard to his status. Evidently, the small fracture of his finger didn't heal enough to allow Tagovailoa to start Week 9, so the Dolphins will turn the offense over to Jacoby Brissett. Since Miami didn't add another quarterback to its roster ahead of Saturday's deadline for Week 9 roster moves, Tagovailoa will dress for the contest as Brissett's understudy, but the Dolphins likely won't use Tagovailoa unless Brissett succumbs to a more serious injury. Miami faces a quick turnaround for Week 10 with a Thursday game against the Ravens, so Tagovailoa isn't a surefire bet to reclaim starting duties for that contest.
Nov 7, 2021
Not expected to start Sunday
Tagovailoa (finger) isn't expected to start Sunday's game against the Texans, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Per the report, the QB has a small fracture in the middle finger of his throwing hand, which is expected to lead to Jacoby Brissett starting Sunday's contest. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Tagovailoa is now in line to work as Brissett's backup in week 9.
Nov 5, 2021
Questionable against Houston
Tagovailoa (finger) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Texans, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa has some swelling on a finger in his throwing hand, but the team ultimately expects him to play through it. The finger is the bigger concern for Tua at this point compared to the fractured ribs that led to an IR stint earlier in the season. If Tagovailoa plays, he'll be without one of his top usual targets in DeVante Parker, who has been placed on IR as he recovers from shoulder and hamstring injuries.
Nov 5, 2021
Should play Sunday
Coach Brian Flores said Friday that Tagovailoa (ribs) is dealing with some swelling in a finger his left (throwing) hand. but the coach is optimistic the signal-caller will play Sunday versus the Texans, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa apparently suffered the finger injury on his throwing hand during last week's loss to the Bills, but it isn't expected to affect his availability for Week 9. The 23-year-old was able to practice as a limited participant Wednesday and Thursday as he also continues to recover from the fractured ribs that sidelined him from Weeks 3 through 5. Tagovailoa may receive the questionable tag for Sunday, though he appears on track to play barring a setback.
Nov 4, 2021
Limited at practice Thursday
Tagovailoa (ribs/finger) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Tagovailoa's practice reps were capped for the second straight day as the Dolphins prepare for Sunday's game against the Texans, head coach Brian Flores hasn't suggested that the quarterback's status for the weekend is in any peril. While Tagovailoa's Week 6 return from a three-game absence due to fractured ribs hasn't translated to any wins, he's been productive from a fantasy standpoint while the Dolphins have been forced to play from behind. In his three starts following his activation from injured reserve, Tagovailoa has completed 68.3 percent of his pass attempts for 825 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions while tacking on 61 yards and another score on the ground.
Nov 3, 2021
Limited at first Week 9 practice
Tagovailoa was listed as a limited participant at Wednesday's practice due to rib and left finger injuries, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
The finger issue is a new concern for Tagovailoa, who was previously sidelined from Weeks 3 through 5 with fractured ribs before suiting up and starting in each of the Dolphins' subsequent three contests. The fact that Tagovailoa wasn't withheld from Wednesday's practice entirely suggests that he faces minimal risk of not being ready to go by Sunday, when the Dolphins host the Texans. The two teams had been in touch recent weeks about a potential deal that would send star quarterback Deshaun Watson to Miami, but the Dolphins ultimately elected to stand pat with Tagovailoa as their signal-caller in the aftermath of Tuesday's trade deadline. Per Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier reiterated Wednesday that the franchise is committed to Tagovailoa, but that won't necessarily stop Miami and Houston from revisiting trade talks this offseason, especially if Watson's murky legal situation gains more clarity by that time.
Oct 31, 2021
Lackluster showing in loss
Tagovailoa completed 21 of 39 passes for 205 yards with no touchdowns and one interception in the Dolphins' 26-11 loss to the Bills on Sunday. He also rushed four times for 10 yards and a touchdown, threw a two-point conversion pass and fumbled once without turning it over.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa's numbers through the air tell the tale of a typical encounter with the Bills' suffocating secondary, which leads the league in multiple pass defense metrics. The second-year signal-caller did take advantage of the return of current top wideout DeVante Parker by targeting him on 11 occasions and completing eight passes for 85 yards on those attempts. Tagovailoa also helped prop up his final line with his one-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter and his subsequent two-point conversion toss to Mike Gesicki, but it was otherwise an underwhelming day for the Dolphins' struggling offense as a whole. Tagovailoa will look to boost his numbers in Week 9 as Miami hosts the Texans.
Oct 29, 2021
Starter moving forward
Coach David Flores said Friday that Tagovailoa will remain Miami's starting quarterback for the rest of the 2021 season, David Furones of the Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Flores' endorsement of Tagovailoa should quell some of the rumors regarding Miami's pursuit of Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, though the Dolphins could certainly revisit the Watson talks with the Texans in the offseason if Tua struggles moving forward or gets hurt again. Tagovailoa has quietly thrown for an impressive 620 yards and six touchdowns in the last two games, but he was also intercepted three times in that stretch and the Dolphins lost both to fall to 1-6.
Oct 24, 2021
Fantasy-friendly effort in loss
Tagovailoa completed 32 of 40 passes for 291 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions in the Dolphins' 30-28 loss to the Falcons on Sunday. He also rushed four times for 29 yards.
ANALYSIS
With Deshaun Watson-related trade rumors swirling around him, Tagovailoa put on a brilliant second-half performance that was nearly good enough for Miami to pull out a thrilling comeback win. The Dolphins defense ultimately let him down, but Tagovailoa also had to shoulder some blame after short-circuiting a first-half drive in Falcons territory with his first interception and throwing his second pick at the Atlanta 30-yard line as well early in the fourth quarter. Nevertheless, his four touchdown passes -- which went to Isaiah Ford, Mike Gesicki, Myles Gaskin and Mack Hollins -- certainly pleased fantasy managers and served as a single-game career high for the second-year signal-caller. Assuming he's still in a Dolphins uniform come Week 8, Tagovailoa will be teed up for a difficult road matchup against the Bills.
Oct 22, 2021
Cleared for Sunday's game
Tagovailoa (ribs) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Falcons, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa never advanced beyond limited participation in practice Wednesday through Friday, but the Dolphins are evidently confident in his health coming out of last week's loss to the Jaguars in London. Making his first appearance since Week 2 in that contest after sitting out the previous three games due to fractured ribs, Tagovailoa completed 33 of 47 attempts for 329 yards, two touchdowns and an interception while carrying three times for 22 yards. Rather than any concern about his ribs issue, most of the conversation surrounding Tagovailoa this week has focused on his future in the organization, as the 23-year-old's name has popped up in trade rumors of late. For his part, Dolphins head coach Brian Flores reiterated Friday that Tagovailoa is the team's starting quarterback now and for the foreseeable future, according to Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com.
Oct 21, 2021
Limited at practice
Tagovailoa (ribs) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After he was listed as limited for Wednesday's walk-through session, Tagovailoa maintained that level of activity while the Dolphins held a more traditional practice Thursday. At this stage, the team hasn't suggested that Tagovailoa has experienced any setbacks in his return from a three-game absence last weekend, so he's still expected to suit up Sunday against the Falcons. Though his name has popped up in trade rumors of late amid the Dolphins' five-game losing streak, Tagovailoa appears in no danger of ceding the starting quarterback job to Jacoby Brissett so long as he's healthy and remains on the roster.
Oct 20, 2021
Logs limited listing Wednesday
Tagovailoa (ribs) was listed as limited on Wednesday's practice estimation, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa previously acknowledged that his ribs were sore following his return to action in Week 6, but there's been nothing to suggest that he's in any danger of not being available for Sunday's game against the Falcons. Meanwhile, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston suggests that the Dolphins are holding trade discussion regarding Houston QB Deshaun Watson, but until or unless such a deal happens, Tagovailoa remains entrenched as Miami's top signal-caller.
Oct 17, 2021
Two touchdowns in return
Tagovailoa completed 33 of 47 pass attempts for 329 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 23-20 loss to the Jaguars. He added one rush for seven yards.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa returned from a three-game absence and had the Dolphins' offense moving early in the game. He tallied 76 passing yards on the team's opening drive, which concluded with a six-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Waddle. He led the team to a field goal on the subsequent possession, thanks to a few long completions to Mike Gesicki and Durham Smythe. Though the production slowed a bit from there, Tagovailoa managed the third 300-yard passing performance of his career.
Oct 17, 2021
Active for Week 6
Tagovailoa (ribs) is listed as active for Sunday's game against the Jaguars in London.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa, who was activated off injured reserve Saturday, returns to the lineup after missing the Dolphins' past three games due to a rib injury that he suffered in Week 2. With Will Fuller (finger) still on IR, DeVante Parker (shoulder/hamstring) and Preston Williams (groin) also out, in his return to action Tagovailoa will be working with a shorthanded wideout corps headed by Jaylen Waddle, with Albert Wilson, Mack Hollins, Isaiah Ford and Kirk Merritt also in the mix. On the plus side, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft will be facing an 0-5 Jacksonville squad that is allowing an average of 30.4 points and 286.6 passing yards per game to date.
Oct 16, 2021
Ready to go
Tagovailoa (ribs) is expected to play Sunday against the Jaguars, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Schefter's reporting lines up with reports from earlier in the day which indicated that Tagovailoa was set to start. He's been trending that way throughout the week after being cleared to practice Tuesday. He'll be appearing for the first time since Week 2 after recovering from fractured ribs.
Oct 16, 2021
Activated off injured reserve
Tagovailoa (ribs) was activated off injured reserve Saturday and will start Sunday against the Jaguars, John Shipley of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
This confirms the optimism both Tagovailoa and coach Brian Flores expressed throughout the week. The 23-year-old is thus set to make his return after the three-week minimum stay on injured reserve. While the team did list him as questionable on the injury report post activation with a ribs injury, he's still expected to start according to Doug Kyed of Pro Football Focus. He'll aim to turn around what has been a stagnant offense under backup Jacoby Brissett although the second-year signal caller won't have two of his top two options in the form of Will Fuller (finger) and Devante Parker (shoulder).
Oct 15, 2021
Still expected back Sunday
Coach Brain Flores said Tagovailoa (ribs) is likely to start Sunday at Jacksonville if he can avoid any setbacks during Friday's practice, Joe Schad of The Palm Beach Post reports.
ANALYSIS
It echoes what Flores said earlier this week when Tagovailoa was designated to return from injured reserve, so it appears the young quarterback avoided any issues at practice over the past couple days. It appears the 23-year-old will end up spending only the three-week minimum on injured reserve after he sustained fractured ribs Week 2 against the Bills.
Oct 13, 2021
Expected to face Jaguars
Tagovailoa (ribs) is expected to suit up for Sunday's game in Jacksonville, barring any setbacks, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa returned to practice Wednesday, and though he still has yet to be fully activated from IR, it appears that he's trending in the right direction to return after missing three games due to fractured ribs. Still, the Dolphins will continue to monitor Tagovailoa, and his pain tolerance, before making a final decision. Will Fuller (finger) will need to remain on IR for at least two more contests, and DeVante Parker (shoulder) has yet to resume practicing after sitting out Week 5. Meanwhile, Jacoby Brissett (hamstring) was limited Wednesday.
Oct 13, 2021
Making progress
Coach Brian Flores said Wednesday that Tagovailoa (ribs) will practice Wednesday and will "hopefully" play Sunday versus the Jaguars, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa has yet to be returned to the 53-man roster, but it looks like he's trending in the right direction to come off IR and get back on the field Week 6. Of course, the Dolphins will likely wait until the young quarterback has been evaluated at practice before making a decision. With DeVante Parker (shoulder) still absent from practice and Will Fuller (finger) sidelined, Tagovailoa could be without a number of key playmakers if he's indeed ready to retake the field. On the plus side, Jacksonville's defense has proven vulnerable and has allowed at least 23 points in each game this season.
Oct 12, 2021
Cleared to practice
The Dolphins have designated Tagovailoa (ribs) to return from injured reserve, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The transaction gives the Dolphins a 21-day window during which the team can evaluate Tagovailoa for a return to the 53-man roster, but he likely won't need the full length of time before being activated. Per Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com, head coach Brian Flores said that Tagovailoa was able to do some throwing Monday, and the quarterback now appears set to take part in the Dolphins' first Week 6 practice Wednesday in at least some capacity. If Tagovailoa checks out well during practices over the next few days, he could take back starting quarterback duties from Jacoby Brissett in Sunday's game against the Jaguars in London.
Oct 4, 2021
Resumes throwing
Coach Brian Flores revealed Monday that Tagovailoa (ribs) has resumed throwing, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2020 first-rounder will remain on injured reserve for Sunday's Week 5 matchup against the Buccaneers, but Flores said the quarterback is "getting better every day." Jacoby Brissett is slated to start under center against Tampa Bay on Sunday, but the Dolphins remain optimistic that Tagovailoa will be back for the team's Week 6 contest against the Jaguars in London on Oct. 17.
Oct 3, 2021
Eyeing Week 6 return
Tagovailoa (ribs) is expected to return from injured reserve ahead of the Dolphins' Week 6 game Oct. 17 against the Jaguars in London, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Miami moved Tagovailoa to IR shortly after he was diagnosed with fractured ribs following the team's Week 2 loss to the Bills, and the second-year quarterback looks like he's on pace to rejoin the 53-man roster when first eligible. According to report, Tagovailoa's three-week absence is expected to provide sufficient time to allow his ribs to heal and enable his to resume throwing without discomfort, but the Dolphins will presumably still want to see how he looks in Week 6 practices before determining whether he's fit to play in London. In the meantime, Jacoby Brissett will pick up starts in Tagovailoa's stead Sunday against the Colts and in Week 5 against the Buccaneers, while Reid Sinnett serves as Brissett's backup.
Sep 25, 2021
Lands on IR
Tagovailoa (ribs) was placed on injured reserve Saturday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
This designation is a bit surprising considering coach Brian Flores suggested earlier this week the second-year quarterback was "day-to-day" after suffering broken ribs in the Week 2 blowout loss to the Bills. In any case, Tagovailoa will miss at least the next three games after landing on injured reserve. Jacoby Brissett is slated to start Sunday's contest against the Raiders, but given the severity of Tagovailoa's injury, it's possible the Dolphins could look to a number of options outside the organization in order to improve the team's depth at quarterback.
Sep 22, 2021
Sidelined by fractured ribs
Coach Brian Flores confirmed Wednesday that Tagovailoa is dealing with fractured ribs and will be out for Sunday's game against the Raiders, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
As a result, Jacoby Brissett is slated to start Sunday, at a minimum, while Reid Sinnett is in line to be promoted to Miami's active roster from the team's practice squad. Beyond Week 3, Tagovailoa should be considered week-to-week, but at this stage we'll consider him iffy for the Dolphins' Oct. 3 contest against the Colts.
Sep 20, 2021
Labeled day-to-day
Coach Brian Flores described Tagovailoa (ribs) as "day-to-day" Monday, adding that the team is still running tests on the quarterback's rib injury, Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Flores also said that Tagovailoa's still in pain from the injury, which knocked him out of Sunday's 35-0 loss to the Bills. The day-to-day label suggests Tua likely isn't in danger of missing substantial time due to this injury, though his status for the Dolphins' Week 3 trip to Vegas remains up in the air. If Tua can't go in Week 3, Jacoby Brissett -- who failed to lead the offense to any points in more than three quarters of action against Buffalo -- would start under center, and Miami would have to make a roster move to bring in a backup option behind Brissett.
Sep 20, 2021
Bruised ribs diagnosis confirmed
Tagovailoa (ribs) returned negative X-rays again after undergoing further testing Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa was forced out of Sunday's 35-0 blowout loss to the Bills early in the first quarter and given an initial diagnosis of bruised ribs, and further medical testing hasn't revealed a more major injury. That means pain management will be the key factor in determining Tagovailoa's availability for suiting up Week 3 against the Raiders, so the Dolphins may not make any decision until seeing how well the second-year quarterback holds up in practice. Jacoby Brissett failed to move Miami's offense at all versus Buffalo, when he completed 24 of 40 passes for 169 yards and an interception with zero touchdowns.
Sep 19, 2021
Week 3 status TBD
Coach Brian Flores indicated that he's hopeful Tagovailoa can play next Sunday against the Raiders, according to Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network, but more should be know about the QB's Week 3 status after he undergoes tests on his injured ribs.
ANALYSIS
Flores acknowledged that if Tagovailoa can't go next week, the team would need to make a roster move, given that Jacoby Brissett is the other QB on the team's active roster. Reid Sinnett is currently on Miami's practice squad.
Sep 19, 2021
Bruises ribs Sunday
Tagovailoa suffered bruised ribs during Sunday's game against the Bills, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
ANALYSIS
Per the report, X-rays on Tagovailoa's ribs came back negative, but the QB is dealing with some pain and is slated to undergo an MRI on Monday. In his absence, Jacoby Brissett is handling the Dolphins' QB duties. If Tagovailoa's Week 3 status is impacted by Sunday's injury, Reid Sinnett is a candidate to be promoted from Miami's practice squad.
Sep 19, 2021
Suffers rib injury
Tagovailoa was forced out of Sunday's game against the Bills with a rib injury.
ANALYSIS
With Tagovailoa now sidelined, Jacoby Brissett has taken over at QB for the Dolphins. Prior to his exit, Tagovailoa was 1-for-4 for 13 yards.
Sep 19, 2021
Gets carted off field Sunday
Tagovailoa (undisclosed) was carted to the locker room during Sunday's game versus the Bills, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
On the Dolphins' second possession of the contest, Tagovailoa took a hard hit while attempting a pass on fourth down, per Wolfe. Tagovailoa made an attempt to get to the sideline but didn't make it before a cart was called to the field. As long as Tagovailoa is sidelined, Jacoby Brissett will be under center for Miami.
Sep 12, 2021
Guides Miami to win
Tagovailoa completed 16 of his 27 pass attempts for 202 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's Week 1 victory over New England. He added four rushes for one yard and a touchdown.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa's stat line isn't all that impressive on the surface, though his ability to connect for big plays with his receivers was encouraging. For example, he completed passes of 30 or more yards to both Jaylen Waddle and DeVante Parker. Tagovailoa also effectively guided the Miami offense near the goal line, converting one attempt on his own with his legs and also tossing a short touchdown pass to Waddle. Moving forward, Tagovailoa's ability to push the ball down the field should only be enhanced by the return of Will Fuller (suspension). However, he'll face Buffalo -- another above-average defense -- in Week 2.
Aug 26, 2021
Won't play in preseason finale
Tagovailoa won't play in Sunday's preseason game against Houston, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Brian Flores said the team will rest most of its starters, including the second-year quarterback. Tagovailoa completed 24 of 34 passes for 282 yards (8.3 YPA) this preseason, tossing one TD and one INT in two games. He'll soon start preparing for Week 1 against New England, backed by a revamped supporting cast that now includes fleet-flooted wideouts Jaylen Waddle and Will Fuller, though the latter is suspended for the season opener.
Aug 21, 2021
Razor sharp in preseason win
Tagovailoa completed 16 of 23 passes for 183 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in the Dolphins' 37-17 preseason win over the Falcons on Saturday night. He also rushed once for eight yards.
ANALYSIS
The second-year signal-caller followed up a solid preseason Week 1 performance against the Bears with an even better effort Saturday night. Tagovailoa led the Dolphins on a trio of 11-play drives in the first half, two which culminated in touchdowns. One of those scores emanated from his arm, as the Alabama product connected with Myles Gaskin on an eight-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. Tagovailoa had a shot at leading the Dolphins to points on his two other possessions as well, but one ended on downs at the Falcons' 14-yard line and a last-gasp 20-yard march just before halftime finished with a Jason Sanders miss on a 58-yard field-goal attempt. Having gotten some solid work in over Miami's first pair of exhibitions, it remains to be seen how much, if at all, Tagovailoa may play in the team's preseason finale against the Bengals a week from Sunday.
Aug 14, 2021
Plays well until red-zone INT
Tagovailoa completed eight of 11 passes for 99 yards, with no touchdowns and an interception in Friday's preseason game against Chicago.
ANALYSIS
The second-year pro played well until the final play of his third drive, throwing an ugly interception into double coverage in the Chicago end zone on a 1st-and-10. It was Tagovailoa's final snap of the night, finishing with only three points on three drives despite making some big plays to convert third downs (including a 50-yard catch-and-run for TE Mike Gesicki). The Dolphins could have a better group of pass catchers available for their second exhibition Aug. 21 against Atlanta, after playing Saturday's game without WRs DeVante Parker, Will Fuller (foot), Albert Wilson (undisclosed), Allen Hurns and Preston Williams (PUP - foot).
Aug 5, 2021
Looking sharp on deep throws
Tagovailoa has shown improvement with his downfield passing through the first week of training camp, but he still looks indecisive against blitzes, according to David Furones of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
ANALYSIS
The lack of a downfield passing game was Miami's biggest weakness last season, particularly when Tagovailoa was under center. Out of 35 qualified quarterbacks, he placed 31st in yards per completion (9.8) and 25th in average depth of target (7.8), struggling to find big plays while directing an undermanned Dolphins offense (he also finished 22nd in sack rate - 6.5 percent). Tagovailoa will have more help for his second NFL season, particularly in the downfield passing game with WRs Will Fuller and Jaylen Waddle. Injuries have prevented Fuller, DeVante Parker and Preston Williams (foot) from getting steady reps with Tagovailoa this summer, while rookie first-rounder Waddle -- a former college teammate at Alabama -- largely has been available for practice.

Reunites with Alabama speedster
Tagovailoa boast immediate chemistry with former Alabama teammate Jaylen Waddle, whom the Dolphins selected sixth overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
As a rookie, Tagovailoa struggled to make the most of a receiving corps compromised of contested catch specialists who don't provide much separation, and it's clear that Miami's priority this offseason has been to surround him with more explosive playmakers. By making Waddle the second wideout selected in April's draft, the Dolphins are allowing Tagovailoa the benefit of linking up with a playmaker whose skillset he's already familiar with, and who should be able to start out of the slot immediately. It's worth noting that Miami also had the option of reuniting the young quarterback with DeVonta Smith, the 2020 Heisman Trophy winner and a potentially more complete receiver at the NFL level. The decision to grab Waddle instead clearly points to a bet on Tagovailoa's ability to maximize the potential of an explosive playmaker capable of bringing separation to the short and intermediate game. Even if Waddle doesn't play outside right off the bat, he should provide Tagovailoa with a perfect complement to new deep

Ready for Year 2 leap?
Coach Brian Flores expects Tagovailoa to make a big jump in his second NFL season, Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Flores was arguably side-stepping a question about Tagovailoa's status as the starting quarterback for 2021. It would be unusual to move on from a No. 5 overall pick after nine NFL starts, but that hasn't slowed down trade rumors involving Tagovailoa and Texans QB Deshaun Watson. Even if nothing materializes on that front, Miami might consider a QB with the No. 3 overall pick. Flores also mentioned that he'd like to retain Ryan Fitzpatrick, though the 38-year-old seemingly intends to sign elsewhere once he becomes a free agent March 17.

Confirmed as 2021 starter
The Dolphins remain committed to Tagovailoa as the team's starting QB for the 2021 season, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports.

Of course, that's hardly surprising given that the team selected Tagovailoa with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Per Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com, the team has yet to determine whether veteran QB Ryan Fitzpatrick might be back with the team next year, but in any case, the franchise -- which holds the No. 3 and No. 18 overall picks in the first round 2021 draft -- will continue build around Tagovailoa in advance of next season. As a rookie, the Alabama product completed 186 of his 290 pass attempts for 1,814 yards to go along with a 11:5 TD:INT ratio in 10 games. Additionally, Tagovailoa ran 36 times for 109 yards and three TDs via the ground game. One thing that will be working in Tagovailoa's favor as he approaches his second campaign as a pro is that is that he'll be even further removed from the dislocated and fractured hip he suffered in November of 2019.
Jan 3, 2021
Piles up yardage in blowout loss
Tagovailoa completed 35 of 58 passes for 361 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in Sunday's 56-26 loss to the Bills. He also rushed six times for 28 yards in the season finale.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa was benched for Ryan Fitzpatrick last week but got the call under center with a postseason berth on the line after Fitzpatrick tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday. While his final stat line looks respectable, much of Tua's yardage, as well as his 25-yard touchdown pass to Malcolm Perry, came after the game was well out of hand due to a combination of effective Buffalo offense and mistakes from Tagovailoa. Fitzpatrick's status for the opening round of the postseason is in doubt, but Miami's hopes of even getting that far now hinge on a Colts loss to the Jaguars in the late window, so it appears the Dolphins will come up just short of a postseason berth. The fifth overall pick out of Alabama finishes his rookie season with 1,814 yards and an 11:5 TD:INT in 10 games (nine starts), and Tagovailoa will likely open his second season as the Dolphins' starter under center.
Dec 31, 2020
Loses top backup
Tagovailoa will be backed up by Jake Rudock against Buffalo on Sunday, with Ryan Fitzpatrick having tested positive for COVID-19, Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa has been replaced by Fitzpatrick with the Dolphins trailing twice this season, most recently during last weekend's narrow loss to the Raiders. With Fitzpatrick now destined for the reserve/COVID-19 list, though, the rookie signal-caller won't get the benefit of a relief option should he struggle against Buffalo. The Dolphins would guarantee a playoff berth with a win over the Bills, so pressure may be mounting for Tagovailoa to take convincing command of the offense.
Dec 27, 2020
Named Week 17 starter
Coach Brian Flores said after Saturday's win over the Raiders that Tagovailoa will start the Week 17 game against the Bills, Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
The rookie completed 17 of 22 pass attempts for 94 yards before being benched in the fourth quarter Saturday, but he'll remain the starter for the final game of the regular season despite Ryan Fitzpatrick delivering an incredible victory for the Dolphins. Flores didn't hesitate in naming Tagovailoa the starter for Week 17, but he could have a shorter leash for his young quarterback with Miami attempting to secure its place in the playoffs.
Dec 26, 2020
Benched in fourth quarter
Tagovailoa was benched for Ryan Fitzpatrick in the fourth quarter of Saturday night's 26-25 win over the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Accuracy wasn't Tagovailoa's problem during Saturday's narrow win, as he completed 17 of 22 pass attempts, but his shallow depth of target led to inefficient completions. Tagovailoa had just 94 passing yards and a score when Fitzpatrick relived him midway through the fourth quarter, leaving him with a miserable 4.3 yards per attempt. The Dolphins previously pulled Tagovailoa for Fitzpatrick against the Broncos back in Week 11, but considering that the rookie had averaged 306 passing yards in his two appearances since that time, it's discouraging to see him apparently regress against the Raiders' exploitable secondary (26th in passing yards allowed per game). It remains to be seen who coach Brian Flores will field under center for Week 17's must-win road game in Buffalo.
Dec 20, 2020
Wills Dolphins to crucial victory
Tagovailoa completed 20 of 26 pass attempts for 145 yards and one interception during Sunday's 22-12 win over the Patriots. He also ran for two scores while carrying the ball three times for nine yards.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa overcame a deeply depleted receiving corps to earn a divisional victory over the Patriots, knocking New England out of the playoffs for the first time since the 2008 season while keeping Miami's postseason hopes alive. All of DeVante Parker (hamstring), Mike Gesicki (shoulder) and Jakeem Grant (hamstring) were ruled out for Sunday's game just prior to kickoff, and Myles Gaskin (illness) is on the reserve/COVID-19 list, forcing Tagovailoa to work with backups at every skill position. With that context in mind, it's quite impressive that the rookie was able to lead the Dolphins' offense to a victory, even if his yardage total doesn't stand out. Preston Williams (foot) is also on IR, and Albert Wilson and Allen Hurns both opted out for the season, so it's accurate to say that Tagovailoa was working without his top seven offensive weapons, at least as they were projected in the offseason.
Dec 13, 2020
Comeback bid comes up short vs. KC
Tagovailoa completed 28 of 48 passes for 316 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in Sunday's 33-27 loss to the Chiefs. He added 24 yards and a touchdown on six rushing attempts.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa tossed a seven-yard touchdown to Mike Gesicki in the first quarter but also threw his first career interception on a deep ball late in the first half to take a 14-10 deficit into the locker room. Tua added a second touchdown to Gesicki from 29 yards out before the tight end left with a shoulder injury, then scored his first career rushing touchdown from one yard out to make it a six-point game in the final minutes. The rookie fifth overall pick is 4-2 as Miami's starter heading into a Week 15 matchup with the Patriots, but he had primarily been a game manager for a Dolphins team that relies on its defense to win games before tossing away the training wheels in this one. Tua's TD:INT through those six starts sits at 9:1.
Dec 11, 2020
Ready to face Chiefs
Tagovailoa (left thumb) does not carry an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa's status for Week 14 never seemed to be in real danger, and by practicing in full Friday the rookie signal-caller has affirmed his readiness. The Chiefs presume to be one of the toughest matchups of Tagovailoa's young career, and even if Miami's standout secondary can limit Patrick Mahomes in some capacity, the Alamaba product may find himself tasked to keep pace in a shootout.
Dec 10, 2020
Limited again Thursday
Tagovailoa (thumb) was limited in Thursday's practice, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa has regularly had his practice reps capped since injuring his throwing thumb, but there's currently no reason to fear that the rookie's Week 14 availability is in any danger. With a home matchup against the high-flying Chiefs offense on deck, it makes sense for the Dolphins to ensure that Tagovailoa is ready to for the possibility of handling large passing volume.
Dec 9, 2020
Limited Wednesday
Tagovailoa (left thumb) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice, Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
The Dolphins continue to manage Tagovailoa's reps due to an injury to his throwing thumb, but considering that the rookie quarterback started last weekend's win over the Bengals, there's not real reason to worry about his availability. Nor did Tagovailoa look particularly hampered by the injury, as he managed a career-best 296 passing yards against Cincinnati. Tagovailoa could have to air it out in order to keep pace with Patrick Mahomes during Sunday's upcoming matchup against the Chiefs.
Dec 6, 2020
Career-high yardage tally in return
Tagovailoa (thumb) completed 26 of 39 passes for 296 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions in the Dolphins' 19-7 win over the Bengals on Sunday. He also rushed three times for three yards.
ANALYSIS
The rookie was masterful in his return from a one-game absence, refraining from any turnovers and avoiding being sacked while connecting with eight different pass catchers on the afternoon. Tagovailoa bestowed the most attention on tight end Mike Gesicki, who also brought in the signal-caller's one touchdown pass of the day in the third quarter. Tagovailoa did not appear to have any accuracy issues as a result of the thumb injury that had sidelined him Week 12, and he now boasts a career-opening five-start interception-less streak heading into a Week 14 home showdown against Patrick Mahomes and the high-powered Chiefs, a game in which the fifth overall pick figures to have to do plenty of passing.
Dec 6, 2020
Starting assignment on tap
Tagovailoa (thumb), who is active for Sunday's game against the Bengals, was seen warming up with the Dolphins' first-team offense prior to the contest, while Ryan Fitzpatrick worked with the second team, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Miami likely won't formally announce a starting quarterback until minutes before the 1 p.m. ET kickoff, but Tagovailoa's involvement with the top unit in pregame drills is as sure of a sign as any that he'll be receiving the nod over Fitzpatrick, who filled in for the injured rookie in the Week 12 win over the Jets. Despite being listed as a limited participant in practices Wednesday through Friday, Tagovailoa reportedly handled most of the first-team reps each day, clearing up most of the concern the Dolphins might have had about his injured left thumb.
Dec 6, 2020
Active, likely starting Week 13
Tagovailoa (thumb) is active for Sunday's game against the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
The Dolphins haven't formally announced that Tagovailoa will start in his return from a one-game absence, but he's expected to receive the nod over Ryan Fitzpatrick after handling most of the first-team work in practice this week, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Over his first three NFL starts before he suffered the left thumb injury, Tagovailoa was a modest performer from a fantasy standpoint, averaging 166.6 passing yards, 1.6 touchdowns and 11.3 rushing yards per contest.
Dec 6, 2020
Expected to start Sunday
Tagovailoa (left thumb) is expected to start Sunday's game against the Bengals, barring any issues during pre-game warmups, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The rookie QB injured the thumb on his throwing hand in practice back on Nov. 25 and sat out last weekend's win over the Jets, which was started by Ryan Fitzpatrick. Per Rapoport, in anticipation of returning to the lineup, Tagovailoa took most of the Dolphins' first-team signal-caller reps at practice this week. While Tagovailoa's Week 13 active status will be confirmed prior to the first wave of games Sunday -- with Miami kicking off at 1:00 ET -- it remains to be seen if a starting QB will be officially announced by the team.
Dec 5, 2020
Expected to be active
Tagovailoa (left thumb) is expected to be active Sunday against the Bengals, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Dolphins opted not to call up practice-squad quarterback Reid Sinnett on Saturday which seems to suggest Tagovailoa will be available to play in some capacity against the Bengals. Reinforcing that notion is a cryptic social media post by an agent of Tagovailoa's, who in a since deleted tweet, mentioned he'd be traveling to the game to watch his client play. Fantasy managers should still confirm Tagovailoa's status ahead of Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff, but it appears the rookie could be set for one of the easiest matchups in his young career against a depleted Bengals unit.
Dec 4, 2020
Officially questionable for Week 13
Tagovailoa (left thumb) is officially listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Bengals, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Brian Flores has already hinted that Tagovialoa's status could come down to a game-time call, per Cameron Wolfe of ESPN, noting that a final decision on the signal-caller's availability won't come until the coaching staff have had time to thoroughly review practice film. The rookie has put together a trio of limited practices since missing last weekend's win over the Jets, but it remains to be seen whether the thumb injury on his throwing hand is still hindering his accuracy and/or velocity. If the Dolphins ultimately deem that Tagovailoa isn't yet healthy enough to provide the best chance to win, Ryan Fitzpatrick will draw another start.
Dec 3, 2020
Could be game-time call Week 13
Dolphins head coach Brian Flores hinted Thursday that Tagovailoa's (thumb) status for this weekend's matchup with the Bengals could come down to a game-time decision, Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reports. "[Tagovailoa] was limited in practice [Wednesday]," Flores said. "We'll take it one day at a time. Both [Tagovailoa and Ryan Fitzpatrick] practiced. We'll see how he progresses throughout the week and make a decision on Sunday."
ANALYSIS
Flores indicated earlier in the week that Tagovailoa will remain the Dolphins' top quarterback if healthy, but the rookie has thus far not been able to throw without any restrictions while he works through a jammed thumb. During his limited workout Wednesday, Tagovailoa was still practicing with tape covering his left wrist and thumb, so he may need to prove he can throw accurately and with his usual velocity before the Dolphins clear him for game action. While Tagovailoa was sidelined for last week's win over the Jets, Fitzpatrick ran the offense smoothly, completing 24 of 39 attempts for 257 yards, two touchdowns and no turnovers.
Dec 2, 2020
Limited to start week
Tagovailoa (thumb) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice, Safid Deen of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa said he felt good while wearing a wrap on his left thumb at practice, per Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com, but he reiterated that a final decision on his Week 13 availability will come down to the coaching staff. Coach Brian Flores has already stated that Tagovailoa will start against the Bengals as long as he's healthy, but Ryan Fitzpatrick would be more than capable of commanding Miami's offense once more if the rookie can't attain full medical clearance .
Dec 1, 2020
Has chance to return Week 13
The Dolphins are optimistic Tagovailoa (thumb) will return Sunday against the Bengals, Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa was held out this past Sunday versus the Jets due to a left thumb injury, which included swelling and even weakness in the appendage. Afterward, coach Brian Flores noted Tagovailoa was "very close" to being able to suit up, but in the end the Dolphins opted for caution with the rookie signal-caller. Once he's medically cleared, Tagovailoa will take over the starting quarterback gig from Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Nov 30, 2020
Uncertain for Week 13
Coach Brian Flores said Monday that he doesn't yet know whether Tagovailoa (thumb) will be ready for Sunday's game against the Bengals, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa sat out last weekend's divisional victory over the still-winless Jets due to a thumb injury, and it sounds possible that his absence could extend another contest. If that's the case, veteran gunslinger Ryan Fitzpatrick will be called upon to make another appearance under center. The Dolphins will monitor Tagovailoa throughout practice this week en route to making a decision about his availability.
Nov 29, 2020
Officially inactive for Week 12
Tagovailoa (thumb) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Jets.
ANALYSIS
After being listed as doubtful for the Week 12 contest Friday following three consecutive limited practices due to the left thumb injury, Tagovailoa never looked like a good bet to suit up Sunday. Perhaps more troubling for the rookie signal-caller is that he's continuing to experience weakness and swelling in the thumb on his throwing hand, an issue that the Dolphins fear could keep the rookie sidelined beyond Week 12, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Ryan Fitzpatrick will start Sunday's game and any additional contests Tagovailoa might be forced to sit out.
Nov 29, 2020
May miss multiple games
Tagovailoa, who is listed as doubtful for Sunday's road game against the Jets, doesn't have a fracture in his left thumb, but he's experiencing swelling and weakness, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. As a result, Tagovailoa may miss multiple contests.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa injured his throwing hand during practice this week, limiting his reps and resulting in an initial questionable designation. Coach Brian Flores downplayed the situation most of the week, but the Dolphins proceeded to downgrade the rookie signal-caller Saturday. With Tagovailoa slated to sit Sunday and potentially beyond, Miami will roll out graybeard Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback.
Nov 28, 2020
Downgraded to doubtful
Tagovailoa (left thumb) was downgraded to doubtful for Sunday's contest against the Dolphins, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
This seems to fall in line with what was reportedly earlier Saturday regarding Tagovailoa's status trending downward. While the Dolphins have not officially confirmed the first-round pick will be inactive, it's looking increasingly likely Ryan Fitzpatrick will make his first start since being benched back in Week 7. Ironically, the veteran's final start came against the Jets, the team he'd be in line to play Sunday, in which Fitzpatrick throw for 191 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions despite the Dolphins essentially rendering it a non-contest by the end of the first half.
Nov 28, 2020
Status very much in question
Tagovailoa (left thumb) is "very much questionable" for Sunday's matchup against the Jets, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
There's been plenty of language over the last 24 hours suggesting the team would be more than comfortable letting its prized rookie quarterback take all the necessary time to heal his damaged thumb, but the Dolphins seem to be essentially hedging the situation by not changing Tagovailoa's questionable designation. At this point, Tagovailoa appears to be trending towards a true game-time decision, so fantasy managers will want to monitor his status leading up to the 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff.
Nov 27, 2020
Deemed questionable for Sunday
Tagovailoa (left thumb) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Jets, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Brian Flores relayed Thursday that he isn't "too worried about" Tagovailoa ahead of Sunday's AFC East clash. According to Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com, Flores will rewatch Tagovailoa's practice film to determine if the rookie is indeed able to play through the injury to his throwing hand. It appears Tagovailoa is trending in the right direction. Ryan Fitzpatrick is on standby in case Flores changes course.
Nov 26, 2020
Logs another limited practice
Tagovailoa (left thumb) remained limited at practice Thursday, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
We'll revisit the QB's status Friday, but Safid Deen of the South Florida Sun Sentinel relays that coach Brian Flores isn't "too worried about" Tagovailoa as Sunday's game against the Jets approaches. A return to a full session Friday would solidify the signal-caller's Week 12 status heading into the weekend.
Nov 25, 2020
Throwing thumb injury surfaces
Tagovailoa was limited in Wednesday's practice due to a left thumb injury, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa's thumb injury is on his throwing hand, a worrying development after the rookie first-round pick was benched in Denver after completing just 11 of 20 passes for 83 yards and a touchdown across three quarters. Veteran backup Ryan Fitzpatrick replaced Tagovailoa in the fourth quarter versus the Broncos, and he would stand to slot in under center Week 12 if the young signal-caller's current injury forces him to miss any time. As long as Tagovailoa is able to continue practicing on at least a limited basis, however, it's safe to say that he's trending in the right direction for Sunday's divisional matchup against the Jets.
Nov 22, 2020
Benched in Denver
Tagovailoa completed 11 of 20 passes for 83 yards and a touchdown before being replaced by Ryan Fitzpatrick in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 20-13 loss to the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
With the Dolphins down 20-10 and having trouble protecting their rookie quarterback, coach Brian Flores removed Tagovailoa from the game after he was sacked for the sixth time and got his foot pinned under Bradley Chubb as he went down. Per Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com, Flores said after the game that Tagovailoa wasn't injured, and he made the switch to give the team its best chance of winning. Tua will remain the starter going forward, and he should get an easier matchup in Week 12 on the road against the Jets.
Nov 15, 2020
Mistake-free again in Week 10 win
Tagovailoa completed 15 of 25 passes for 169 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Dolphins' 29-21 win over the Chargers on Sunday. He also netted minus-1 yards on six carries and recovered a fumble.
ANALYSIS
The rookie put together another efficient and mistake-free performance, relying primarily on short passing and also once again benefiting from a stellar effort by his defense. Tagovailoa connected with Jakeem Grant and Durham Smythe for his pair of passing touchdowns, boosting him to a stellar 5:0 TD:INT over his first two starts. The Alabama product appears to be processing the portions of the playbook he's been allowed to operate very well thus far, and he'll likely continue to be fed a bit more each week as he continues to acclimate. Tagovailoa's next test comes on the road against the Broncos in a Week 11 matchup.
Nov 8, 2020
Efficient in win over Cardinals
Tagovailoa completed 20 of 28 pass attempts for 248 yards and two touchdowns while adding 35 yards on seven carries during Sunday's 34-31 win over the Dolphins.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa completed an impressive 71 percent of his throws and averaged 8.9 yards per attempt. He completed touchdown passes to Preston Williams and Mack Hollins while also finishing just shy of the team lead in rushing. Tagovailoa was perhaps a bit overshadowed by Kyler Murray's gaudy numbers on the other side, but his own production jumped quite a bit after an underwhelming effort last week against the Rams. He's also led the team to a pair of victories since taking over under center and will look to continue his ascent next Sunday against a Chargers defense that hasn't lived up to expectations this year.
Nov 1, 2020
Modest numbers in starting debut
Tagovailoa completed 12 of 22 passes for 93 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in the Dolphins' 28-17 win over the Rams on Sunday. He also netted zero yards on two rushes and lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
The heralded rookie didn't exactly light up the stat sheet in his first NFL start, but that was somewhat by design. Things didn't start off too well for the Alabama product, either, as he coughed up the ball on his second play from scrimmage, giving up the ball at his own 18-yard line on a sack by Aaron Donald. While that turnover led to a Rams touchdown, Tagovailoa settled down afterwards, capping off a late first-quarter drive following a Miami interception with his first career touchdown pass to DeVante Parker. The Dolphins defense and special teams were of great help to Tagovailoa as well, as Jared Goff was picked off and sacked two times apiece, Andrew Van Ginkel returned a fumble 78 yards for a touchdown, and Jakeem Grant ran back a punt 88 yards for a score as well. Tagovailoa will now study the film and prepare for a Week 9 interconference battle versus the Cardinals.
Oct 20, 2020
Named starting QB
The Dolphins have named Tagovailoa their starting quarterback moving forward, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The fifth overall pick of the 2020 draft, Tagovailoa made his long-awaited pro debut at the end of Sunday's 24-0 victory over the Jets, completing both of his passes for nine yards. While his stint of 2:27 on the field wasn't extensive, it was enough for coach Brian Flores to make the move from graybeard Ryan Fitzpatrick to Tagovailoa, whose college career came to a close last Nov. 16 when he suffered a dislocated and fractured right hip. Miami currently is in the midst of its bye week, so Tagovailoa's debut will have to wait until Nov. 1 against the Rams.
Oct 18, 2020
Leads final drive
Tagovailoa completed both of his pass attempts for nine yards during Sunday's 24-0 win over the Jets.
ANALYSIS
The rookie No. 5 overall pick entered the game with 2:27 left on the clock in the fourth quarter, driving from Miami's own seven yard line. Tagovailoa wasn't tasked with doing anything more than running the clock out, so it's difficult to extrapolate much from his first professional action, but the rookie did manage to seamlessly pick up the necessary first down by virtue of completions to Patrick Laird and Jakeem Grant. It remains to be seen when Tagovailoa will officially transition into Miami's starting role, but it's at least encouraging to see tangible confirmation that the team considers him healthy enough for game-action.
Oct 6, 2020
Not starting yet
Tagovailoa will remain a reserve for Sunday's game at San Francisco, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Brian Flores seemed to hint that a QB change was possible when he wouldn't commit to Ryan Fitzpatrick as the starter for Week 5 on Monday. Just one day later, though, Fitzpatrick will continue to direct the offense, at least to begin Sunday's outing. On a positive note, he's completing a career-best 69 percent of his passes, but Miami is sitting on a 1-3 record. Tagovailoa has been active for each of those games but has yet to experience his first NFL snap. Perhaps the 2020 first-rounder will do just that if Fitzpatrick stumbles this weekend.
Oct 5, 2020
Dolphins considering QB change
Coach Brian Flores wouldn't commit to Ryan Fitzpatrick as the starter for Week 5 on Monday, Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Flores noted that Fitzpatrick is likely to retain the starting gig in San Francisco, per Beasley, but that a final decision hasn't yet been made. The Dolphins have only one win through four contests, so Fitzpatrick could be nearing the end of his rope as a bridge starter. Fellow rookie first-round signal-callers Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert have already gotten the opportunity to thrive under center, and it looks like Tagovailoa could get the chance to join that group before long. However, per Michael Giardi of NFL Network, Flores remains hesitant to rush Tagovailoa onto the field so soon after recovering from a serious hip injury and recent illness.
Oct 4, 2020
Suits up Sunday
Tagovailoa (illness) is listed as active for Sunday's game against the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
With that, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft is slated to back up starter Ryan Fitzpatrick on Sunday. Tagovailoa sat out practice both Wednesday and Thursday, before returning to a limited session Friday.
Oct 2, 2020
Questionable, expected to play
Tagovailoa (illness) is officially listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Seahawks, Safid Deen of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa has dealt with an undisclosed illness throughout practice this week, so his 'questionable' designation doesn't come as much of a surprise, but Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that the rookie first-round pick is expected to go Sunday. Ryan Fitzpatrick is in line to start against Seattle, and if the Dolphins have any lingering doubts about Tagovailoa's availability the team could opt to promote Reid Sinnett from the practice squad.
Oct 2, 2020
Back at practice Friday
Tagovailoa (illness) is at practice Friday, Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
The rookie first-round pick was unable to practice the past two days due to the illness, but he's back on the field Friday. It remains unclear if Tagovailoa will be ready to go for Sunday's matchup with the Seahawks, or if Reid Sinnett will need to be promoted from the practice squad to serve as Ryan Fitzpatrick's backup.
Sep 30, 2020
Missing practice with illness
Dolphins head coach Brian Flores said Tagovailoa wouldn't practice Wednesday due to a non-COVID-19-related illness, Hal Habib of The Palm Beach Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The Dolphins are hopeful that a day off will be all Tagovailoa needs to move past the ailment, but he'll likely have to return to practice in some fashion Thursday or Friday to gain clearance for Sunday's game against the Seahawks. If the rookie isn't ready to fill his normal No. 2 role behind starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, Miami could promote Reid Sinnett from the practice squad to serve as its Week 4 backup.
Sep 14, 2020
Remaining in backup role
Tagovailoa will remain Miami's No. 2 quarterback heading into Week 2's divisional match against the Bills, Hal Habib of The Palm Beach Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The Dolphins didn't appear to consider putting Tagovailoa in the game during Sunday's season-opening loss to the Patriots, in which Ryan Fitzpatrick threw three picks and failed to move the offense, so it looks like the team is committed to allowing the rookie time to develop. However, if Fitzpatrick logs a similarly poor performance against Buffalo, Tagovailoa could begin building a case to enter the fray.
Sep 11, 2020
Ready for season opener
Tagovailoa (hip) practiced fully Friday and doesn't have a designation for Sunday's game at New England, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
A full participant all week in preparation for his first NFL game, Tagovailoa has recovered from the hip injury that brought an early end to his final campaign at Alabama last November. He'll enter the season as the backup to starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, so it remains to be seen when Tagovailoa will take his first NFL snaps.
Sep 10, 2020
Hip issue downplayed
Tagovailoa (hip) remains healthy despite his presence on Wednesday's injury report, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Jackson's report notes that any player receiving any type of treatment is expected to be listed on the injury report, but still confirms that "Tua is fine." Tagovailoa still practiced in full during Wednesday's session, and is fully expected to serve as the backup to Ryan Fitzpatrick in Week 1's showdown at New England. This appears to be nothing out of the ordinary for a player 10 months removed from a relatively major hip injury.
Sep 9, 2020
Listed on injury report
Tagovailoa (hip) is listed on Wednesday's injury report but was a full participant in practice, Hal Habib of The Palm Beach Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa could still be working back to 100 percent form, as he's coming off serious hip surgery undergone last November, but the Dolphins' decision to begin the 2020 season with only he and Ryan Fitzpatrick on the active roster is an indication that the team believes he's healthy enough to see emergency action. The rookie first-round pick will begin his career as Fitzpatrick's backup, but as Tagovailoa continues to progress in his recovery he could make a case to earn the job.
Sep 5, 2020
Beginning career as backup
Tagovailoa is set to serve as Miami's No. 2 quarterback following the decision to cut Josh Rosen, Safid Deen of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Brian Flores said earlier this week that Tagovailoa's heath has been a factor in determining Miami's backup position, but he noted Saturday that "from a health standpoint" he feels good about the 22-year-old's readiness. The move to cut Rosen, who started three games for the Dolphins in 2019, reinforces that optimism, though Flores also left the door open about potentially adding another quarterback off waivers. Ryan Fitzpatrick will start Sept. 13's season-opener against the Patriots, but Tagovailoa is likely to see action at some point as a rookie, as long as he can dissuade any worries about his recovery from November hip surgery.

Could be No. 3 QB
Coach Brian Flores said Tagovailoa's hip injury from last year will be a factor in the Dolphins' backup quarterback decision, Joe Schad of The Palm Beach Post reports.
ANALYSIS
This might be interpreted as a hint that Josh Rosen will open the season as the No. 2 quarterback, with Tagovailoa expected to usurp at some point. On the other hand, Flores did say the rookie has looked healthy throughout training camp, and it's highly likely the team will want to see him play in games at some point before the end of the season. Meanwhile, Ryan Fitzpatrick is expected to start Week 1 against the Patriots.

Looking healthy in practice
Tagovailoa looked healthy Monday during the Dolphins' first padded practice of training camp, according to ESPN.com's Cameron Wolfe.
ANALYSIS
The report notes that Ryan Fitzpatrick remains the favorite to get the Week 1 start, but that's more about his experience and solid performance last season than anything to do with Tagovailoa's return from hip surgery. The No. 5 overall pick should see the field at some point this season, and his practice reps likely will be increased as the Dolphins progress through camp.

Cleared for practice
Tagovailoa (hip) passed a physical exam and will practice without limitations once the Dolphins begin training camp, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The No. 5 overall pick enjoyed a smooth rehab process after undergoing surgery to address the hip dislocation he suffered Nov. 16. The spring rumor mill suggested Tagovailoa might essentially redshirt his rookie season, but it now seems he'll see the field at some point in 2020. It's less clear exactly when that will happen, with the cancellation of offseason programs and preseason games making it difficult for the rookie to unseat Ryan Fitzpatrick before Week 1. The Dolphins likely will open the season with the 37-year-old handling snaps, but they should turn to Tagovailoa if/when Fitzpatrick struggles or the team falls out of playoff contention.

Signs rookie deal
Tagovailoa has signed his rookie contract, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The No. 5 overall selection of the 2020 NFL Draft, Tagovailoa is now officially under contract in Miami for at least the next four years, with a fifth-year option built in. His deal is worth a guaranteed $30.28 million with a signing bonus of $19.6 million. The former Alabama star's outstanding accuracy and decision making, in addition to his tangible athleticism, will lend him difference-making upside under center when healthy. However, having undergone procedures on a dislocated hip and both ankles in college, it remains to be seen whether Tagovailoa will return to pre-surgery form by Week 1. In the event that any questions about the rookie's development or recovery linger into the regular season, he'll have the benefit of learning behind an experienced in Ryan Fitzpatrick.
