Jets making QB change
Taylor is slated to replace Justin Fields as New York's starting quarterback during Sunday's road matchup against the Ravens, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor previously relieved Fields during New York's loss to the Panthers in Week 7 and then appeared set to take over as the team's starter Week 8, but a knee contusion suffered versus Carolina derailed that opportunity. However, Fields' continued struggles as a passer now pave the way for Taylor to take over under center Week 12. With Garrett Wilson (knee) on IR, it will also be a challenge for Taylor to rack up notable production through the air, though improving upon Fields' average of 139.9 passing yards per game is a more than reasonable target. Adonai Mitchell, John Metchie and Tyler Johnson will operate as Taylor's top wideouts versus Baltimore on Sunday.

Returning as backup QB in Week 10
Taylor will serve as the backup to starting quarterback Justin Fields in Sunday's game against the Browns, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After coming on in relief of a struggling Fields in the Jets' Week 7 loss to the Panthers, Taylor appeared poised to take over as the team's starting quarterback in Week 8. However, Taylor emerged from the loss to the Panthers with a knee contusion, and after he wasn't able to advance beyond limited participation that week, the Jets stuck with Fields as their starter. Fields proceeded to turn in one of his best performances of the season as the Jets claimed their first win in a 39-38 victory over the Bengals, and he'll get the chance to build on that positive outing coming out of New York's Week 9 bye. Taylor was a full participant in practice throughout Week 10 and has moved past the injury, so the Jets likely won't hesitate to turn to him if Fields is unable to move the offense early on in Sunday's contest.

Practices without restrictions
Taylor (knee) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor had been in contention to replace Justin Fields under center and start Week 8 versus the Bengals, but he was instead ruled out due to a knee injury. That paved the way for Fields to log his best performance of the season in the 39-38 win, potentially reaffirming his grip on the starting job. That said, head coach Aaron Glenn has yet to confirm a No. 1 quarterback for Sunday's game against the Browns, as he was noncommittal about Fields entering the Week 9 bye. it shouldn't be long before Glenn provides further clarification.

Ready to practice after bye week
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said Monday that Taylor (knee) will resume practicing this week, Eric Allen of the Jets' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
After the Jets fell to 0-7 following a 13-6 loss to the Panthers on Oct. 19, all signs seemed to point to Taylor displacing the struggling Justin Fields as the team's starting quarterback. However, Taylor picked up a knee injury at some point during his appearance in relief of Fields in the loss to Carolina, and Taylor ended up being a limited participant throughout Week 8 prep before being ruled out ahead of the Jets' matchup with the Bengals. Fields continued to direct the offense and turned in one of his best performances of the season en route to leading the Jets to a come-from-behind 39-38 victory over Cincinnati, but Glenn remains non-committal on a starting quarterback coming out of the team's Week 9 bye. Fields' stellar outing might be enough to give him the early edge on the starting nod for Sunday's game against the Browns, even though Taylor looks like he could be back to full health. The Jets' first Week 10 practice report will be released Wednesday and will reveal whether Taylor remains limited o

Won't play Week 8
Taylor (knee) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Bengals, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Head coach Aaron Glenn opted not to name a starter throughout Week 8 prep, but Taylor's absence due to a knee contusion means Justin Fields will be under center for Sunday's road game while Brady Cook is expected to be elevated from the practice squad to the active roster. Taylor started the week splitting first-team reps with Fields, but the former's knee injury is severe enough for him to not travel with the team to Cincinnati. The Jets are on a bye for Week 9, so Taylor will have more time to recover and return for Week 10 against the Browns on Sunday, Nov. 9, though whether he starts against Cleveland will largely depend on Fields' performance in Week 8.
Oct 24, 2025
Questionable as QB1 yet to be named
Taylor (knee) will remain limited at Friday's practice and be listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Bengals, Eric Allen of the Jets' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Head coach Aaron Glenn has yet to name a starter for Sunday's game. Taylor could get the nod given Justin Fields' recent struggles, but Taylor will first have to gain medical clearance to play Sunday. Regardless of who is under center, the Jets will remain without top wide receiver Garrett Wilson (knee) against the Bengals.
Oct 23, 2025
Remains limited Thursday
Taylor (knee) was a limited participant at practice Thursday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor said he took a helmet to the knee in this past Sunday's loss to the Panthers. He replaced the ineffective Justin Fields at halftime of that game. Taylor and Fields have subsequently split reps in practice. The Jets have yet to announce which quarterback will start Sunday in Cincinnati, but Taylor will first need to show that he's healthy enough to suit up in order to remain in starting consideration.
Oct 22, 2025
Shares first-team reps while limited
Taylor (knee) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It's a good sign for Taylor that the knee injury he picked up Sunday didn't stop him from practicing Wednesday, although he didn't do enough to be listed as a full participant. Fellow Jets quarterback Justin Fields told reporters that he and Taylor split first-team reps, with Fields also saying that he doesn't know which of them will start Sunday's game at Cincinnati, per Connor Hughes of SNY.tv. It at least appears Taylor's knee injury won't be the deciding factor. Meanwhile, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said Wednesday that he's already made his decision on the Week 8 starter but is keeping it a secret -- with ESPN's Rich Cimini reporting that his sources consider Taylor the favorite.
Oct 22, 2025
Day-to-day with knee issue
Taylor, who is a candidate to start Sunday's game against the Bengals, is considered day-to-day with a knee injury, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Meanwhile, coach Aaron Glenn noted Wednesday that he doesn't want to reveal his Week 8 starting QB for competitive reasons, per Eric Allen of the Jets' official site. With Taylor now managing a knee issue, the QB's upcoming practice participation is slated to add context with regard to his status, but if available this weekend, Taylor could supplant Justin Fields as the 0-7 Jets' starting signal-caller.
Oct 21, 2025
Likely taking over as starter
Head coach Aaron Glenn hasn't announced his plans at quarterback for Sunday's game in Cincinnati, but the Jets are "moving toward" naming Taylor as their starter, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Glenn may not name a Week 8 starter until he meets with the media prior to Wednesday's practice, but the tea leaves appear to be pointing toward Taylor displacing the struggling Justin Fields atop the depth chart in the wake of the Jets' 0-7 start to the season. Taylor -- who previously started Week 3 against the Buccaneers while Fields missed the game due to a concussion -- entered in relief during this past Sunday's 13-6 loss to the Panthers in the third quarter, when Fields was benched after completing six of 12 pass attempts for 46 yards and losing 21 yards on three sacks. Taylor (10-for-22 for 126 yards and two interceptions, 12 yards lost on three sacks) wasn't much more effective in his five drives directing the offense, but the Jets could nonetheless look to the 36-year-old veteran to provide a spark after Fields had been held under 100 passing yards in three of his six starts to date.
Oct 19, 2025
Enters in relief of Fields
Taylor completed 10 of 22 passes for 126 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's 13-6 loss to the Panthers. He added three rushes for 11 yards.
ANALYSIS
Taylor replaced Justin Fields to start the third quarter and brought some life to the offense, accounting for most of the Jets' offensive production. However, he was also intercepted twice while a comeback was still possible, negating his positive work. Despite the inconsistent results, Taylor could be in line for a Week 8 start against the Bengals, as coach Aaron Glenn stated he will evaluate the position throughout the week, per Rich Cimini of ESPN.
Sep 21, 2025
Mixed results in Week 3 loss
Taylor completed 26 of 36 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns with one interception in Sunday's 29-27 loss to the Buccaneers. He added 48 rushing yards on eight carries and lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
The veteran backup QB acquitted himself fairly well in place of Justin Fields (concussion), leading the Jets in rushing yards and tossing TDs to Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard in the fourth quarter while trying to engineer a comeback from a 23-6 deficit. Taylor could head back to the bench in Week 4 against the Dolphins, but if he is needed again, his presence doesn't seem like it will be much of a damper on the offense's production.
Sep 17, 2025
Set for Week 3 start
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said Wednesday that Taylor will start Sunday's game on the road against Tampa Bay with Justin Fields (concussion) ruled out, Connor Hughes of SNY.tv reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor will draw at least one start while Fields works his way through the NFL's five-step concussion protocol. The veteran QB entered New York's 30-10 loss to the Bills in Week 2 in the fourth quarter, completing seven of 11 passes for 56 yards and a score while playing the Jets' final two drives. He also rushed three times for 21 yards, looking more efficient in command of New York's offense than Fields had through the first three quarters. Taylor's modest dual-threat upside at age 36 makes him a viable fantasy option in formats that start two quarterbacks.
Sep 14, 2025
Throws TD after Fields' concussion
Taylor completed seven of 11 passes for 56 yards and a touchdown while rushing three times for 21 yards after replacing Justin Fields (concussion) in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 30-10 loss to the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Taylor played the final two drives after Fields exited in the fourth quarter. The passing attack looked more effective with Taylor in the game, as Fields threw for only 27 yards prior to his injury. Taylor's touchdown pass was a five-yarder to Jeremy Ruckert to finish off the scoring Sunday. Fields will be hard-pressed to clear the league's five-step concussion protocol prior to the Jets' Week 4 road game in Tampa Bay, so Taylor could be in line to make the 59th regular-season start of his NFL career.
Sep 4, 2025
No limitations Thursday
Taylor (knee) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor returned to full practice participation for the first-time since late July, paving the way for him to suit up Week 1 against the Steelers as Justin Fields' backup. The veteran backup has been working his way back from a knee scope.
Sep 3, 2025
Gets in limited session
Taylor (knee) was limited in Wednesday's practice, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor had his knee scoped early on during training camp and missed the preseason. He recently returned to practice, however, and appears to be on track to handle QB2 duties behind Justin Fields in Sunday's Week 1 opener versus Pittsburgh.
Sep 2, 2025
Back at practice
Taylor (knee) participated in Tuesday's practice, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Jets aren't required to release an official practice report until Wednesday this week, but Taylor's return to the field appears to put him on track for backup duties behind Justin Fields for Sunday's Week 1 opener against the Steelers.
Aug 23, 2025
Could be ready for Week 1
Head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters Friday that he's "confident" that Taylor (knee) will be available for the Jets' regular-season opener against the Steelers on Sunday, Sept. 7, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor is recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery that has kept him sidelined since early August. There's optimism that he'll be available for Week 1 to serve as the Jets' backup quarterback behind starter Justin Fields. If Taylor isn't cleared to suit up, then the QB2 role would fall to either Adrian Martinez or Brady Cook unless the Jets opt to sign another signal-caller ahead of the regular-season opener.
Aug 12, 2025
Out for remainder of preseason
Jets coach Aaron Glenn said Tuesday that Taylor (knee) is recovering from a arthroscopic surgery and will not suit up this preseason, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Glenn said the team is hopeful Taylor will be available Week 1, per Brian Costello of the New York Post, but for the remainder of the preseason it will fall to Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook to handle quarterback reps behind starter Justin Fields. New York figures to add another signal-caller to the roster as at least temporary depth, with Taylor sidelined at least the next few weeks.
Aug 4, 2025
Sidelined by knee injury Monday
Taylor (knee) didn't practice Monday, Brian Costello of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor had previously worked as the backup to Justin Fields, who is viewed as the team's clear starter after signing a two-year contract with the Jets in the offseason. If Taylor isn't available for Saturday's preseason opener against the Packers, Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook would be in line for additional opportunities.
Feb 18, 2025
Makes just two appearances
Taylor appeared in two regular-season games for the Jets in 2024, completing 17 of 22 passes for 119 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing three times for 13 yards.
ANALYSIS
Taylor remained on the sidelines for the vast majority of the season, operating as Aaron Rodgers' backup. The latter remained healthy enough to start all 17 regular-season games for the Jets, leading to little opportunity for Taylor. The Virginia Tech product is under contract for next season, and assuming he remains with the Jets, will likely be competing for a backup job again to whoever the team brings in to start, assuming they follow through with releasing Rodgers later in the spring.
Dec 29, 2024
Mops up in lopsided loss
Taylor completed 11 of 14 passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 40-14 loss to the Bills. He also threw a two-point conversion while playing the fourth quarter.
ANALYSIS
Taylor entered the game with the Jets trailing 40-0 in the fourth quarter and at least managed to deliver a modicum of respectability to the final stat line with two touchdown passes in as many drives. He connected with Garrett Wilson for a nine-yard score, then found Tyler Conklin for the two-point conversion before adding a 20-yard touchdown pass to Conklin. Rodgers is expected to start as usual against the Dolphins in Week 18, relegating Taylor back to the bench.
Aug 11, 2024
Quiet in preseason start
Taylor completed one of two passes for minus-1 yard in Saturday's 20-17 preseason win over the Commanders.
ANALYSIS
Taylor played the first two drives with the Jets holding out most of their starters, including Aaron Rodgers. The veteran backup didn't do much of note in his Jets debut, but Taylor isn't in any danger of losing the backup role to Jordan Travis (ankle) or Andrew Peasley, who threw a touchdown pass on the next drive after Taylor exited the game. Taylor will likely see more extensive action in next Saturday's preseason game against the Panthers.
Mar 11, 2024
Expected to join Jets
Taylor has agreed on terms to a two-year deal with the Jets, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor is staying in New York but will sport a different jersey. The journeyman signal caller accumulated 1,399 yards and six touchdowns through the air across 14 games (five starts) during his two-year stint with the Giants. With 58 career starts under his belt, he is a safe veteran choice to back up Aaron Rodgers (Achilles), as the Jets were determined to improve in that department following the 2023 season.
Jan 7, 2024
Nearly reaches 300 yards in win
Taylor completed 23 of 32 passes for 297 yards and a touchdown with an interception in Sunday's 27-10 win over the Eagles. He added 38 rushing yards on eight carries.
ANALYSIS
The veteran quarterback might have topped 300 yards for the second straight game, but he briefly left late in the first quarter to get his thumb checked out, and Tommy DeVito completed a five-yard pass in his absence. Taylor, who has played for five teams over the last seven seasons alone, will be a free agent in the offseason and isn't likely to return to the Giants with DeVito and Daniel Jones (knee) on the depth chart, but the 34-year-old showed in 2023 he can still be effective and won't likely have much trouble landing elsewhere.
Jan 7, 2024
Back in Sunday's game
Taylor (thumb) returned to Sunday's game against the Eagles, Darryl Slater of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor hit the sideline for a spell to have his thumb examined, but after backup Tommy DeVito got banged up, the former reentered the contest. He'll look to build upon the 72 yards on 4-for-6 passing and one seven-yard carry that he had accumulated prior to his departure.
Jan 7, 2024
Hurts thumb Sunday
Taylor was forced out of Sunday's game against the Eagles with a thumb injury.
ANALYSIS
Before leaving the contest, Taylor had completed four of his six passes for 72 yards and carried once for seven yards. As a result of his injury, Tommy DeVito is in at QB for the Giants.
Jan 5, 2024
Cleared to face Eagles
Taylor (back) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Eagles, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Brian Daboll never seemed worried about Taylor's back injury, naming the 34-year-old as his Week 18 starting quarterback Wednesday. Taylor led a second-half rally against the Eagles in Week 16, ultimately falling short in a 33-25 loss after replacing Tommy DeVito at halftime. The rematch may be impacted by snow, and there's also some chance the Eagles rest key players or remove some guys early.
Jan 4, 2024
Reps capped again Thursday
Taylor (back) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor's practice reps were managed for the second day in a row, and even though he's already been named the Giants' starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Eagles, he may need to put in a full practice Friday to approach the season finale without a designation. The Giants re-signed Jacob Eason to their practice squad Thursday to provide depth at quarterback in case Taylor can't play this weekend, though Tommy DeVito would be the next man up to start.
Jan 3, 2024
Listed as limited Wednesday
Taylor (back) was listed as a limited participant on Wednesday's projected injury report, Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Brian Daboll named Taylor the starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Eagles earlier in the day, suggesting that he doesn't anticipate this back injury will hinder Taylor's availability. Nonetheless, Taylor's participation level in practice Thursday and Friday will be worth monitoring as the Giants prepare for a rematch with a reeling Philadelphia defense against which Taylor threw for 133 yards in one half of action two weeks ago.
Jan 3, 2024
Set to start Sunday
Taylor will remain the Giants' starting QB on Sunday against the Eagles, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Though the Giants have been eliminated from playoff contention, coach Brian Daboll will stick with the veteran signal-caller in the team's season finale, rather than pivot back to rookie Tommy DeVito. In this past Sunday's 26-25 loss to the Rams, Taylor completed 27 of 41 passes for 319 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while adding 40 yards on six rushing attempts.
Dec 31, 2023
Tops 300 yards in losing effort
Taylor completed 27 of 41 passes for 319 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's 26-25 loss to the Rams. He added 40 yards on six rushing attempts.
ANALYSIS
Taylor threw for just 101 yards in the first half with no touchdowns and an interception as the Giants took a 14-10 deficit into the locker room. He was better in the second half and got New York back into the game with an 80-yard touchdown pass to Darius Slayton in the third quarter, but Taylor made a pair of crucial mistakes in the fourth. He threw behind Jalin Hyatt on a fourth-and-1 completion that came up short, then had an even more egregious miss on a throw behind a wide open Saquon Barkley as the Giants went for the go-ahead two-point conversion after scoring a special teams touchdown with 3:27 remaining. Taylor nearly atoned for the mistakes with a 31-yard scramble to set up a go-ahead field-goal attempt in the final minute, but Mason Crosby hooked a 54-yarder wide. It remains to be seen whether the Giants stick with Taylor or go back to rookie Tommy DeVito for a Week 18 game against the Eagles that means much more to Philadelphia.
Dec 27, 2023
Set to start vs. Rams
Coach Brian Daboll said Wednesday that Taylor will start Sunday's game against the Rams, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor replaced Tommy DeVito to start the second half of Christmas Day's loss to the Eagles. He completed seven of 16 passes for 133 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while also rushing twice for 21 yards. It remains to be seen whether the Giants could make another change under center during Week 18's regular-season finale rematch against Philadelphia, but Taylor will get a chance to make the case for himself at home versus the Rams on Sunday.
Dec 25, 2023
Sparks second-half rally
Taylor completed seven of 16 passes for 133 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Monday's 33-25 loss to the Eagles. He added two rushes for 21 yards.
ANALYSIS
Taylor entered the game to start the second half, replacing Tommy DeVito. His stat line wasn't overly impressive, but he was the more aggressive of the Giants' passers while completing three passes of at least 20 yards -- highlighted by a 69-yard touchdown toss to Darius Slayton deep down the left sideline with five minutes remaining in the game. It's unclear whether Taylor will get the chance to start in Week 17 against the Rams, but he made his case by sparking the second-half comeback that ultimately fell just short.
Dec 18, 2023
Sees first action since Week 8
Taylor completed two of four passes for 13 yards Sunday in a Week 15 loss to the Saints.
ANALYSIS
Taylor was activated off IR ahead of last week's contest against the Packers, but he didn't get on the field in New York's victory. Tommy DeVito worked behind center in that contest and did so again against New Orleans on Sunday, but Taylor got a chance to run the offense near the end of the first half after DeVito was injured on a scramble. Taylor managed to complete two passes to get the Giants deeper into Saints territory, which was key with punter Jamie Gillan taking over for the injured Randy Bullock (hamstring) as the team's placekicker. Gillan converted a 40-yard field-goal to end the half, but that was the extent of Taylor's opportunity, as DeVito was able to return after halftime. Head coach Brian Daboll confirmed after the loss that DeVito will remain New York's starting quarterback moving forward, per Dan Duggan of The Athletic, so Taylor will continue to work as the undrafted rookie's backup.
Dec 11, 2023
Activated but will be backup Monday
Taylor (ribs) was activated from injured reserve Monday, but he will back up Tommy DeVito in Monday's game against the Packers, Charlotte Carroll of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor's back on the active roster after a full week of practice, but he'll remain in a backup role Monday. DeVito won his last two starts prior to the Giants' bye, while Tayor posted a record of 1-2 as a starter prior to his stint on IR.
Dec 10, 2023
Clear for Monday, but still on IR
Taylor (ribs), who remains on injured reserve, doesn't have a designation for Monday's game against the Packers.
ANALYSIS
After the Giants designated him for return from IR on Monday, Taylor proceeded to log full practices Thursday through Saturday. Along the way, coach Brian Daboll called Tommy DeVito the team's starting quarterback for Week 14, thus relegating Taylor to backup duties, assuming he's activated. New York has until 4:00 p.m. ET on Monday to make such a transaction and get Taylor back on the active roster.
Dec 7, 2023
Logs full practice Thursday
Taylor (ribs) was listed as a full participant on Thursday's estimated injury report, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The Giants designated Taylor for return from injured reserve Monday, but even with a Week 13 bye in the rearview mirror, the team didn't hold practice Thursday. Still, he wouldn't have had any restrictions if it had done so, meaning he seems poised to serve as Tommy DeVito's backup Monday against the Packers, assuming Taylor is activated ahead of that contest. If not, though, Taylor would yield the No. 2 job to practice-squad member Matt Barkley.
Dec 5, 2023
Not starting in Week 14
Taylor (ribs), whom the Giants designated for return from injured reserve this week, won't start Monday against the Packers after coach Brian Daboll named Tommy DeVito the team's No. 1 QB for Week 14 on Tuesday, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor has missed the minimum four games on IR in order to return to action, and he told Charlotte Carroll of The Athletic on Tuesday that four broken ribs were the reason for his stay on the list. Assuming he's activated ahead of Monday's game, Taylor thus will serve as the direct backup to DeVito in Week 14 and potentially beyond.
Dec 4, 2023
Designated for return
The Giants announced Monday that Taylor (ribs) has been designated to return from IR.
ANALYSIS
Taylor enters the mix to potentially start versus the Dolphins on Monday Night Football in Week 14, with his 21-day practice window now officially opened. Of course, with UDFA Tommy Devito riding a two-game winning streak, a quarterback change may be unlikely for New York. Taylor did performed adequately when healthy earlier this season, though, so it wouldn't be out of the question for him to get another crack at the starting job this season. The veteran QB hasn't played since Week 8 due to an injury to his rib cage.
Dec 4, 2023
Returning to practice this week
The Giants are expected to designate Taylor (ribs) for a return from IR and open his practice window this week, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor's 21-day practice window will open as soon as he's officially designated to return from IR, meaning he could be an option to start versus the Dolphins on Monday Night Football in Week 14. Undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito has led New York on a two-game win streak, however, so Taylor could end up working in a backup capacity once back in the lineup.
Nov 10, 2023
Expects to return this season
Taylor said Thursday that his rib injury is "not season-ending in my mind," Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Earlier this week, Giants head coach Brian Daboll was non-committal about Taylor playing again this season, but the quarterback stated Thursday that nobody in the organization has indicated that his campaign could be over. Taylor is on IR and isn't eligible to play until Week 14 versus Green Bay, and there could be little motivation for New York to expedite his return in what is looking like a lost season, as the club currently sits in last place in the NFC East at 2-7. Daniel Jones tore his ACL this past Sunday versus the Raiders and is out for the remainder of the campaign, so undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito is set to take the helm behind center for the foreseeable future.
Nov 6, 2023
Return uncertain this season
Giants head coach Brian Daboll was non-committal Monday when asked if Taylor (rib cage) will return from injured reserve this season, Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
After being placed on IR prior to Sunday's 30-6 loss to the Raiders, Taylor will have to miss at least the Giants' next three games, with his first opportunity to play again arriving after the team's Week 13 bye. Daboll's unwillingness to speak on Taylor's availability for the rest of the season would seemingly suggest that at the very least, the Giants aren't counting on the veteran signal-caller being ready to play when first eligible Week 14 against the Packers on Dec. 11. Taylor had served as the Giants' starting quarterback from Weeks 6 through 8 while Daniel Jones was sidelined with a neck injury, completing 46 of 72 pass attempts for 487 yards and two touchdowns while adding 82 yards on 18 carries before suffering an injury to his rib cage in the second quarter of an overtime loss to the Jets on Oct. 29. With Jones suffering a season-ending ACL tear in his return to the lineup against Las Vegas, a healthy Taylor would have been positioned for another extended run as the Giants' starting quarterback, bu
Nov 4, 2023
Shifts to injured reserve
Taylor (ribs) was placed on injured reserve Saturday, Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor's absence perfectly coincides with the return of Daniel Jones (neck) from his multi-game absence. Tommy DeVito appears to be the team's backup at the moment with the journeyman veteran sidelined until at least Dec. 11, but it's possible the Giants could add an additional backup given DeVito's lack of experience.
Nov 2, 2023
Won't be available Week 9
Coach Brian Daboll relayed Thursday that Taylor (ribs) will miss Sunday's game against the Raiders, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
With Taylor out this week, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com indicates that Tommy DeVito is likely to serve as the Giants' No. 2 QB on Sunday. Meanwhile, Matt Citak of the Giants' official site previously noted that top signal caller Daniel Jones returned to a full practice Wednesday.
Nov 1, 2023
Starts Week 9 prep with DNP
Taylor (rib cage) didn't practice Wednesday, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor was discharged from the hospital Monday after injuring his rib cage in the second quarter of this past Sunday's 13-10 loss to the Jets. Tommy DeVito replaced Taylor and completed just two passes over the rest of the game. Taylor's absence Wednesday is no surprise, and he's unlikely to heal in time to face the Raiders this coming Sunday, but luckily for the Giants, starting quarterback Daniel Jones (neck) has been cleared for contact and could be ready to make his first appearance since Week 5.
Oct 30, 2023
Leaves hospital Monday
Taylor (rib cage) was discharged from the hospital Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor was forced out of Sunday's overtime loss to the Jets in the second quarter and taken to the hospital, where he stayed overnight as he underwent further examination. The precautionary measure allowed him to leave one day later, but he now is considered week-to-week, per Schefter. With news that Daniel Jones (neck) was cleared for contact Sunday prior to Taylor's injury, according to Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post, the Giants may not have as dire of a situation at quarterback as they prepare for a Week 9 road matchup with the Raiders.
Oct 29, 2023
Remaining in hospital overnight
The Giants stated after their game Sunday that Taylor will undergo further examination on his rib cage and will remain in the hospital overnight.
ANALYSIS
Taylor departed Sunday's game against the Jets after taking a hit in the second quarter. The veteran quarterback was subsequently transported to a local hospital, and he's now slated to undergo additional testing and observation. Taylor's status for Week 9 against Las Vegas is thus in question, though additional details about his outlook should emerge in the coming days. Undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito took over Taylor on Sunday and could do so again versus the Raiders next week if Taylor is unable to play and Daniel Jones (neck) remains sidelined, though New York would almost certainly look to add another QB in that scenario.
Oct 29, 2023
Ruled out with rib injury
Taylor won't return to Sunday's game versus the Jets due to a rib injury.
ANALYSIS
Taylor was in clear discomfort after getting tackled while running to his left in the second quarter and seemed to be favoring his right wrist after the play. After heading to the locker room, though, he's been diagnosed with a different health concern and was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation, ending Week 8 action with eight yards on 4-for-7 passing and five carries for 33 yards. With Daniel Jones (neck) inactive again, the Giants will entrust the offense in undrafted rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito for the rest of Sunday.
Oct 29, 2023
Exits Sunday with injury
Taylor suffered an apparent right wrist injury during Sunday's game against the Jets, Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
In the middle of the second quarter, the ball slipped out of Taylor's hand as he attempted to throw while running to his left. He caught it and continued to run, but he landed awkwardly on his right wrist as he was tackled and eventually went to the locker room. With Daniel Jones (neck) still sidelined, the Giants may be down to undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito at quarterback for the rest of Week 8.
Oct 27, 2023
Getting another start
Taylor will start Sunday's game against the Jets after Daniel Jones (neck) was ruled out for a third straight week, Art Stapleton of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor will make his third straight start, after nearly upsetting the Bills and then defeating the Commanders. The Giants are still expected to start Jones once he's medically cleared, though coach Brian Daboll was non-committal Friday when a reporter asked him if that will happen this season, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports. It thus sounds like Taylor may have more starts in his future, even if Daboll wasn't ready to commit to anything beyond this Sunday.
Oct 25, 2023
Getting first-team reps again
Taylor is taking first-team reps at Wednesday's practice, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Daniel Jones (neck) has been throwing in practice since last week but still hasn't been cleared for contact. He'll return to the starting job once he's cleared, despite Taylor's solid performance as a fill-in starter the past two weeks. He's on track for a third consecutive start Sunday against the Jets, though Jones still has a few more days to gain clearance and upgrade to full practice.
Oct 22, 2023
Two TD tosses in Week 7 win
Taylor completed 18 of 29 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns while adding 25 rushing yards on eight carries in Sunday's 14-7 win over the Commanders.
ANALYSIS
Both touchdowns came in the second quarter, as Taylor hit Darren Waller for a 15-yard TD to open the scoring before Saquon Barkley took a little flip 32 yards to the end zone. Taylor's looked poised in his two starts while Daniel Jones (neck) has been sidelined and he did snap the team's four-game losing streak Sunday, but the Giants have still produced only 23 total points in those two contests. If Jones is able to return for a Week 8 clash with the Jets, there likely won't be any QB controversy.
Oct 21, 2023
In store for another start
Taylor is on track to make a second straight start Sunday against the Commanders with Daniel Jones (neck) listed as questionable but not expected to play, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
After sitting out last week's loss to the Bills, Jones made positive strides in his recovery from the neck injury this week. Jones was listed as a limited participant in practices Wednesday through Friday, but because he has yet to be cleared to take contact as of Saturday, the Giants are likely to play it safe with their franchise signal-caller and hold him out for another week. Head coach Brian Daboll will entrust the 34-year-old Taylor to direct the offense in what will likely be a conservative game plan, though the veteran quarterback was able to do his part to keep the Giants competitive last week in a 14-9 loss to the heavily-favored Bills. He completed 24 of his 36 pass attempts for 200 yards and added 24 yards on the ground while committing no turnovers as the Giants controlled time of possession.
Oct 16, 2023
Comes up short in spot start
Taylor completed 24 of 36 pass attempts for 200 yards with no touchdowns or turnovers while adding 24 rushing yards on five attempts in Sunday's 14-9 loss to the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Taylor stepped in for injured starter Daniel Jones (neck), finishing with a rather average fantasy line in the narrow loss. The veteran quarterback made an uncharacteristic mental blunder with the ball on the opponent's goal line with seconds left in the first half, audibling from a presumed pass play into a Saquon Barkley rushing attempt that was stuffed for no gain. The Giants did not have any timeouts left, which allowed the clock to expire as a direct result of Taylor's impulse decision. Jones' status for Week 7's matchup against Washington is still up in the air, but the 34-year-old Taylor doesn't offer the fantasy upside he once did as a dual-threat quarterback in his prime.
Oct 13, 2023
Getting first start of season
Taylor will start Sunday's game against the Bills in place of Daniel Jones (neck), Art Stapleton of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones didn't practice this week and was ruled out Friday, suggesting he could be in danger of additional absences beyond Sunday night. Taylor has completed 11 of 15 passes for 92 yards in mop-up duty this year, after attempting eight passes last season in his first year with the Giants. The 34-year-old last made starts for Houston in 2021, putting up a 2-4 record and 19-151-3 rushing line while completing 91 of 150 passes (60.7 percent) for 966 yards (6.4 YPA), five TDs and five interceptions. He's probably lost another step since then, and he'll line up Sunday night behind an offensive line that's missing at least two starters and a swing tackle (and possibly more than that).
Oct 12, 2023
Trending toward Week 6 start
Taylor took practice reps with the first-team offense Thursday for the second day in a row and appears to be trending toward the starting nod for Sunday's game against the Bills in place of the injured Daniel Jones (neck), Paul Schwartz of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
While the neck injury that Jones sustained late in the Giants' Week 5 loss to the Dolphins isn't considered as significant as the one that kept the signal-caller out for the final six games of the 2021 season, he still appears likely to miss time. Head coach Brian Daboll hasn't yet ruled Jones out from playing Sunday, but in order to be a realistic option to play this weekend, the 26-year-old will likely need to practice Friday in at least a limited fashion after sitting out sessions Wednesday and Thursday. A veteran of 85 appearances and 53 starts over his 13-year NFL career, Taylor represents an experienced fill-in option, though he probably won't make for a viable fantasy option outside of leagues that start two quarterbacks or have a QB flex spot. In addition to working behind a banged-up offensive line, Taylor could be without a couple of key skill-position players, as running back Saquon Barkley (ankle) and tight end Darren Waller (groin) are both nursing injuries at this stage of the week.
Oct 8, 2023
Solid numbers in emergency duty
Taylor took over for an injured Daniel Jones (neck) with 12:11 remaining in the fourth quarter and completed nine of 12 passes for 86 yards and rushed three times for 14 yards in the Giants' 31-16 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Taylor took over with the Giants already down 15 points and did a fine job statistically, but he ultimately failed to lead New York to any scores. The veteran had his own brief injury scare at one point, with Charlotte Carroll of The Athletic reporting Taylor went down on one knee after trying to walk off a hit but ultimately stayed in the game. If Jones is unable to suit up for a tough Week 6 road matchup against the Bills, Taylor would be in line to draw a start against one of his former squads.
Sep 11, 2023
Gets mop-up work
Taylor completed both of his pass attempts for six yards in Sunday's blowout loss to the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
The contest was out of reach for New York at 40-0 amidst pouring rain by the middle of the fourth quarter, so it's somewhat surprising that Daniel Jones was left in the game until there was just over a minute left on the clock. Taylor entered and completed a couple dump-off passes to backup tailback Gary Brightwell that netted six yards before the timer mercifully ran down on a disastrous season-opener for the Giants. The organization made a huge commitment to Jones -- who completed just 15 of 28 pass attempts for 104 yards and two interceptions Sunday -- with a four-year deal in the offseason, so Taylor isn't likely to play more than a backup role even if the incumbent QB gets off to a slow start.
Aug 19, 2023
Solid again in exhibition action
Taylor completed nine of 13 pass attempts for 90 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions in Friday's preseason win over the Panthers. He added 21 rushing yard on three carries.
ANALYSIS
Taylor saw more action than in the Giants' first exhibition contest, when he attempted just four passes. The highlight of the veteran QB's night came when he hit rookie wideout Jaylin Hyatt for a 33-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Taylor is locked in as New York's backup signal caller behind Daniel Jones for the coming campaign.
Aug 12, 2023
Plays briefly in preseason opener
Taylor completed three of four pass attempts for seven yards in Friday's exhibition loss to Detroit. He added two rushes for seven yards.
ANALYSIS
Taylor started the contest for New York and played on two drives before giving way to Tommy DeVito, who took the remainder of the snaps behind center. Taylor's biggest play was a 13-yard completion to Isaiah Hodgins that helped set up a Graham Gano field goal. The veteran quarterback is expected to back up starter Daniel Jones for the second straight season.
Jan 11, 2023
Limited to 31 snaps this season
Taylor played in three games during the regular season, completing six of eight pass attempts for 58 yards and a touchdown while throwing one interception. He also rushed five times for 70 yards and lost one fumble.
ANALYSIS
Taylor came into the campaign as a candidate to see a fair amount of work with Daniel Jones having suffered through two straight poor seasons and coming off a neck injury that cut his 2021 campaign short. However, Jones stayed healthy and improved his play significantly under new head coach Brian Daboll, keeping Taylor relegated to a pure backup role. Taylor did look good in the one contest during which he was allowed to let loose, completing all five of his passes for 47 yards and a touchdown while rushing twice for 40 yards during garbage time of a blowout loss Week 14 against Philadelphia. The veteran is signed with New York through next season, whereas Jones is coming up on free agency, though Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that the Giants will look to bring the latter back after their surprising success during the current campaign. Even if Jones doesn't return, it seems likely that New York would look elsewhere for a replacement rather than hand the reigns over to Taylor, who hasn't logged a full se
Dec 12, 2022
Gets some work in blowout loss
Taylor completed all five of his pass attempts for 47 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's Week 14 loss to Philadelphia. He also rushed twice for 40 yards, lost a fumble on a sack and completed a two-point conversion.
ANALYSIS
Taylor came on to replace Daniel Jones midway through the fourth quarter with the game out of reach for New York. Taylor's first drive didn't go well, as he was sacked on the second play and coughed up the ball, leading to an Eagles touchdown. However, the backup QB led the Giants to a touchdown on the following drive, finding Richie James from 19 yards out one play after converting a 4th-and-15 with a 32-yard scramble. This was just Taylor's second game appearance of the season, as Jones has been able to maintain his health thus far. Taylor is among the safer backup quarterback options in the league, but Jones has done well enough this season to solidify himself as the starter for a team in the thick of the playoff hunt.
Oct 13, 2022
Exits concussion protocol
Taylor was a full participant in Thursday's practice after head coach Brian Daboll said the quarterback cleared the concussion protocol, Art Stapleton of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
After suffering the concussion while coming on in relief of a banged-up Daniel Jones in the Giants' Week 4 win over the Bears, Taylor wasn't able to clear the protocol in time to play in last week's victory over the Packers in London. Davis Webb was summoned from the practice squad last week to handle backup duties behind Jones, but Taylor looks like he'll be dressing as the understudy this Sunday against Baltimore.
Oct 12, 2022
Will be limited Wednesday
Taylor (concussion) will be a limited participant during Wednesday's practice, Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor replaced Daniel Jones, who suffered an ankle injury, during the fourth quarter of the team's Week 4 win over the Bears, but the backup quarterback also had to leave the contest due to a concussion. Despite optimism, Taylor remained sidelined for Week 5, but Jones returned and led a comeback win over the Packers. It's encouraging to see Taylor back at practice, albeit in a limited fashion, and he appears on track to reprise his role as the top backup heading into Sunday's match against the Ravens.
Oct 7, 2022
Ruled out for Week 5
Taylor (concussion) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against Green Bay, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor remains in the league's concussion protocol and will be forced to miss at least one game after he sustained his injury in last week's win over the Bears. However, Daniel Jones should be available to start under center, while Davis Webb will likely be elevated to the active roster to serve as a backup quarterback.
Oct 6, 2022
Still hopeful to play in London
Taylor (concussion) was listed as a non-participant in Thursday's practice, Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Taylor has gone down as a non-participant on the Giants' first two Week 5 practice reports and remains in the concussion protocol, the veteran signal-caller seemingly took a step forward Thursday even if his level of activity didn't suggest as much. According to Duggan, Taylor was present for Thursday's practice and was sporting a helmet, and he was later spotted running off to the side. Taylor is seemingly on track to fly with the Giants to London on Friday, though it's unclear if he'll be ready to advance to limit or full activity in the Giants' final Week 5 practice. If Taylor can't clear the protocol before Sunday's game against the Packers, Davis Webb would likely be elevated from the practice squad to serve as the backup to starter Daniel Jones (ankle), who has been limited in the Giants' first two practices but looks to be trending toward playing.
Oct 5, 2022
Not at practice
Taylor (concussion) isn't practicing Wednesday, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor left Sunday's win over the Bears with a concussion after he'd replaced Daniel Jones, who then re-entered the contest and played through an ankle injury. The Giants reportedly hope to have Jones under center this Sunday against the Packers in London.
Oct 2, 2022
Concussion confirmed
Taylor suffered a concussion during Sunday's 20-12 win against the Bears, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor entered for a banged-up Daniel Jones (ankle) in the fourth quarter, throwing an interception on his first drive before taking a helmet-to-helmet hit on the second possession. He proceeded to be examined for a head injury, and a concussion has been confirmed in the meantime. The Giants take on the Packers in London next Sunday, but it's unclear if Taylor will be Jones' backup, let alone both players being available. Currently, the only other quarterback on the roster is practice-squad member Davis Webb.
Oct 2, 2022
May have concussion
Taylor is under evaluation for a head injury during Sunday's contest against the Bears, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor took over for an injured Daniel Jones (ankle) in the fourth quarter, but he tossed an interception on his first drive before taking a helmet-to-helmet hit on his second possession. With the Giants rostering only two quarterbacks Sunday, Saquon Barkley operated out of the wild cat while Jones returned to the field and lined up out wide. It remains to be seen whether or not Taylor enters the concussion protocol.
Sep 24, 2022
Misses practice Saturday
Taylor was absent from Saturday's practice due to a personal issue, but he's expected to be ready to play in Monday's Week 3 matchup against Dallas, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor has yet to take a snap this season, but he's the clear-cut backup to starter Daniel Jones. With the Giants off to a 2-0 start, Jones' job security is relatively secure, so it would take an injury or a drastic dropoff in Jones' play for Taylor to gain fantasy relevance.
Sep 7, 2022
Clear of injury report
Taylor (back) isn't listed on Wednesday's injury report, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor suffered a back injury during the Giants' preseason finale, but as expected, he'll will be available for Week 1. The veteran quarterback is set to operate as the primary backup to Daniel Jones during Sunday's season opener against the Titans.
Sep 5, 2022
Good for Week 1
Coach Brian Daboll said Monday that Taylor (back) is "good to go" for Week 1, Art Stapleton of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor will be available as Daniel Jones' backup during Sunday's road season-opener against the Titans. The veteran suffered a back injury during the Giants' preseason contest against the Jets, but he's managed to avoid a long-term issue. It remains to be seen whether Taylor will practice in full Wednesday, but in any case he appears on track for Sunday.
Aug 28, 2022
Back injury isn't serious
Coach Brian Daboll said Taylor "should be OK" after the quarterback left Sunday's preseason game versus the Jets due to a back injury, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Leading the offense in place of Daniel Jones, Taylor worked most of the first quarter before taking a hit while rolling to his right. Taylor remained on the field for a spell before heading to the sideline tent and eventually the locker room. The veteran QB returned to the sideline in street clothes after halftime, and Daboll's comment indicates Taylor will be fine to serve as Jones' backup to begin the upcoming season.
Aug 28, 2022
Picks up back injury
Taylor left Sunday's preseason game versus the Jets due to a back injury, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor was driven into the ground after completing a 25-yard pass to Daniel Bellinger, remaining on the turf for a few minutes. The 11-year pro then visited the medical tent before needing a cart to get to the locker room. With starting quarterback Daniel Jones sitting out this contest, Taylor handed off the offense to Davis Webb.
Aug 28, 2022
Suffers injury Sunday
Taylor (undisclosed) was carted off the field during Sunday's preseason game against the Jets, Art Stapleton of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
As the first quarter was drawing to a close, Taylor unleashed a pass as he rolled to the right and immediately was driven to the ground by a Jets defender. He remained on the turf for a spell before going to the sideline tent and requiring a cart to get to the locker room. The nature of the injury is unclear, but Taylor ceded QB duties to Davis Webb with Daniel Jones sitting out this exhibition.
Aug 18, 2022
Could get reps with first team
Giants head coach Brian Daboll said Taylor could get some snaps with the first team during preseason games, Jordan Ranaan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
There is no QB competition in New York -- Daboll emphasized that Daniel Jones is the clear-cut starter heading into his fourth NFL season. However, the coach also indicated a desire to expose Taylor to scenarios in which he may be needed to enter a game in a pinch, which is especially pertinent given the fact that Jones has dealt with injuries throughout his professional career. There's also the reality that the Giants declined Jones' fifth-year option earlier this year. Should he fail to do well in Daboll's offense, it's possible that Taylor -- who is on a two-year deal -- could take the reigns in 2023 while the organization pursues its next potential franchise quarterback.
Aug 12, 2022
Tosses TD in preseason opener
Taylor completed 13 of 21 pass attempts for 129 yards and a touchdown with no turnovers in Thursday's 23-21 preseason victory over New England. He also rushed once for two yards.
ANALYSIS
Daniel Jones and Davis Webb also logged time behind center in the contest, but Taylor saw the most action of the trio. He was responsible for the team's only passing touchdown, connecting with Richie James for a seven-yard score in the second quarter. Taylor will open the regular season as New York's backup quarterback, but he offers a viable alternative to Jones if the latter struggles in new head coach Brian Daboll's offense.
Mar 15, 2022
Inks deal with Big Blue
The Giants and Taylor agreed to terms of a two-year contract Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor was a member of the Bills when new Giants GM Joe Schoen joined Buffalo's front office in 2017. At 32 years old, Taylor brings a wealth of experience to New York's quarterback room, having started 53 games for four different organizations. In his most recent stint with the Texans last season, the 2011 sixth-round pick completed 91 of 150 passes for 966 yards, five touchdowns and five interceptions while rushing 19 times for 151 yards and three more scores in six starts. With the Giants, Taylor will serve as the direct backup to three-year pro Daniel Jones (neck), whose injury history may allow the former to get on the field again in 2022.
Dec 10, 2021
Officially demoted to backup job
Coach David Culley named Davis Mills Houston's starting quarterback for the rest of the season, relegating Taylor to backup duties, Drew Dougherty of the Texans' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor was cleared to return after suffering a wrist injury last week against the Colts, but Mills remained in the contest and will retain the starting job going forward. Taylor has played in six games this season and completed 91 of 150 passes for 966 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions while also rushing 19 times for 151 yards and three more scores.
Dec 8, 2021
Practicing fully
Taylor (left wrist) practiced fully Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Per Deepi Sidhu of the Texans' official site, Taylor, who suffered a hyperextension of his left wrist in this past Sunday's loss to the Colts, shared first-team QB reps with Davis Mills on Wednesday. While coach David Culley said a decision on the team's starting signal-caller for Week 14 (and potentially for the rest of the season) has yet to be made, he noted that Taylor's wrist issue won't be a factor in that call. Meanwhile, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston indicates via league sources that Mills is expected to get the nod, though an official announcement on that front, one way or the other, may not arrive until the end of the week.
Dec 8, 2021
Likely demoted to backup role
Taylor (wrist) is practicing Wednesday but isn't expected to start Sunday's game against the Seahawks, with the Texans likely turning back to rookie Davis Mills under center, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor's poor performance already made this a possibility before a Monday report revealed he has torn ligaments in his left wrist. It's an injury the right-handed QB might be able to play through, but it sounds like Taylor is on track to finish out the season as a backup even if he's healthy enough to play. Of course, there's still time for another flip-flop, with five games remaining and Mills yet to win an NFL start (the Texans went 0-6 with the rookie under center Weeks 3-8).
Dec 6, 2021
Could have torn ligaments
Taylor is believed to have suffered torn ligaments in his non-throwing wrist, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor will undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of the injury that forced him out of Sunday's blowout loss to the Colts, but if he's indeed suffered torn ligaments, the veteran will be in real danger of missing time. Rookie third-round pick would stand to slot into the starting lineup versus Seattle in Week 14 if Taylor can't go.
Dec 6, 2021
No starter chosen for Week 14
Coach David Culley said Monday a decision on the starting quarterback for Week 14 versus Seattle hasn't been made yet, Deepi Sidhu of the Texans' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor was replaced by Davis Mills during Sunday's blowout loss to the Colts after suffering a wrist injury, possibly a hyperextension. Per Sidhu, Taylor will undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of his injury. A final decision on the Week 14 starter won't be made until the results of Taylor's MRI are available, and perhaps until the Texans have had a chance to evaluate the veteran at practice.
Dec 5, 2021
Dealing with wrist issue
Taylor (wrist) completed 5 of his 13 passing attempts for 45 yards and an interception and ran three times for 15 yards prior to being replaced by Davis Mills in Sunday's 31-0 loss to the Colts.
ANALYSIS
Per Deepi Sidhu of the Texans' official site, Taylor suffered a possible hyperextended wrist in the contest. While coach David Culley noted afterward that the veteran QB probably could have returned, there was some concern that the issue could affect Taylor's ability to grip the ball. With that in mind, consider him day-to-day heading into the team's preparations for next weekend's game against the Seahawks.
Nov 28, 2021
Tosses two TDs in loss
Taylor completed 17 of 26 passes for 158 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in Sunday's 21-14 loss to the Jets. He added 30 yards on two rushing attempts.
ANALYSIS
Taylor was picked off on Houston's first possession but bounced back two drives later with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Brevin Jordan to take a 7-3 lead. He then threw a dime to Brandin Cooks for a 40-yard touchdown on the very next possession. Taylor cooled off after that, though, and the Jets responded with 18 unanswered points to pull out the road win. The veteran quarterback will have limited appeal when the Colts come to town in Week 13.
Nov 21, 2021
Does damage with legs
Taylor completed 14 of his 24 passes for 107 yards in Sunday's 22-13 win over the Titans. He added six rushing attempts for 28 yards and two touchdowns.
ANALYSIS
Taylor was ineffective through the air, likely at least in part due to consistent rain throughout the game. However, he managed plenty of production on the ground, finding the end zone from seven and five yards away. Though that salvaged his fantasy performance, Taylor has completed only 38 of his 67 passes for 5.2 yards per attempt and three interceptions with no touchdowns across two games since being activated off injured reserve. That makes him a risky starting option, even given a very favorable matchup against the Jets in Week 12.
Nov 8, 2021
Will start after bye
Taylor will be the starting quarterback when the Texans resume their season Week 11 against the Titans, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The 1-8 Texans have their bye coming up in Week 10, but it doesn't look like there will be an radical changes at quarterback when the season resumes. Taylor is coming off one of the worst performances of his career in Sunday's loss to Miami, during which he threw three interceptions, failed to get the Texans into the end zone on three red zone trips, and posted a 42.8 quarterback rating.
Nov 7, 2021
Three picks in return to action
Taylor (hamstring) completed 24 of 43 passes for 240 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions in the Texans' 17-9 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday. He also rushed three times for 23 yards.
ANALYSIS
The veteran signal-caller didn't exactly get a soft landing in his return to action despite facing a Dolphins squad that was 1-7 going in. Taylor's efficiency and passing yardage were acceptable from a fantasy perspective and he gave the offense a bit more stability than rookie Davis Mills had, but the 32-year-old still short-circuited a trio of Texans possessions with one interception deep in Dolphins' territory and another pair on Houston's side of the field. With some rust hopefully knocked off after a six-game absence, Taylor now turns his focus to improving his performance in a Week 11 battle against the Titans on Nov. 21 following a Week 10 bye.
Nov 6, 2021
Officially activated
Taylor (hamstring) was activated off injured reserve Saturday.
ANALYSIS
This was just a procedural move considering coach David Culley confirmed Thursday the veteran quarterback would start Sunday's contest against the Dolphins. Taylor was a surprisingly effective quarterback through his first two starts this season totaling 416 yards and a 3:0 TD:INT ratio while completing 70 percent of his passes prior to injuring his hamstring. He'll face off against a Miami defense that allows the second-most passing yards per game through eight weeks.
Nov 4, 2021
Set to return in Week 9
Coach David Culley confirmed Thursday that Taylor (hamstring) will start Sunday's game against the Dolphins, Deepi Sidhu of the Texans' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Culley noted that Taylor has suffered no setbacks with his hamstring injury, which sets the stage for the veteran QB to be officially activated off IR in advance of Sunday's contest. As a result, Davis Mills, who had been starting in Taylor's place, will revert to a backup role. In his looming return to action, Taylor -- who last suited up in Week 2 -- will be facing a 1-7 Miami defense that has allowed an average of 291.1 passing yards per game to date. Only the Ravens (296.1) have allowed more.
Oct 29, 2021
Not returning this weekend
Coach David Culley said Taylor (hamstring) won't be activated from injured reserve for Sunday's game against the Rams, Aaron Reiss of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran quarterback was designated to return from injured reserve and is back at practice this week, but Culley said, "we just don't feel Tyrod is ready right now." It doesn't sound as though Taylor has suffered a setback, so there's a chance he's able to return Week 9 at Miami. Davis Mills will make another start under center for the Texans.
Oct 27, 2021
Back at practice
Taylor (hamstring) returned to practice Wednesday, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com, coach David Culley said the plan is to ease the veteran signal-caller back into the mix. However, once he's deemed ready for game action, Culley previously stated that Taylor will reclaim the Texans' starting QB role, which has been held by Davis Mills with Taylor having been on IR.
Oct 25, 2021
Slated to practice Wednesday
Taylor (hamstring) will return to practice Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor has been on injured reserve since he suffered a left hamstring injury in Week 2, but he has a chance to return to game action Sunday against the Rams. Coach David Culley said Monday that Taylor will reclaim his job as the Texans' starting quarterback once he's cleared to play.
Oct 24, 2021
Ready to resume practicing
Taylor (hamstring) is expected to resume practicing this week, per coach David Culley, NFL reporter Aaron Wilson reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor's availability for Houston's Week 8 matchup with the Rams will come down to how his hamstring responds in practice. Once healthy enough to play, the veteran quarterback is expected to retake the starting job from Davis Mills for a Texans team that's dropped six consecutive games since beating Jacksonville in the season opener.
Oct 20, 2021
Progressing, but won't start in Week 7
Coach David Culley indicated Wednesday that Taylor (hamstring) could potentially log some practice time this week, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Meanwhile, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston relays via Culley that Taylor, who is still on IR, remains the Texans' starting QB when healthy, but isn't an option for the team's Week 7 assignment. As a result, for at least one more game Houston will turn to Davis Mills, who will get the nod this Sunday against the Cardinals.
Oct 18, 2021
Making improvements
Coach David Culley said Monday things are being taken "day-to-day" with Tayor (hamstring), Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Culley had referred to Taylor as 'week-to-week' heading into last Sunday's loss to the Colts, so it would appear that he's since taken some steps in the right direction. Per Culley, the Texans will have more information Wednesday regarding whether Taylor is ready to come off IR. If Taylor isn't back in action in time to suit up at Arizona in Week 7, Davis Mills will be called upon for another start.
Oct 13, 2021
Not ready this week
Coach David Culley noted Wednesday that Taylor (hamstring) is making good progress, but remains week-to-week, Drew Dougherty of the Texans' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Taylor isn't in line to be activated from IR this week, Culley indicated that when the veteran QB does return to the mix, he'll reclaim his starting assignment. For now though, Davis Mills will continue to helm the Texans offense this Sunday versus the Colts.
Sep 21, 2021
Moved to IR
The Texans placed Taylor (hamstring) on injured reserve Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Head coach David Culley already ruled Taylor out two days in advance of Thursday's game against the Panthers after the quarterback strained his left hamstring in Sunday's loss to the Browns, but the 32-year-old signal-caller's move to IR means he'll be sidelined through at least Week 5. Rookie third-round pick Davis Mills is the next man up on the depth chart, and if healthy, he'll presumably start at least the Texans' next three games while the organization remains content to keep Deshaun Watson inactive.
Sep 21, 2021
Officially out for Week 3
Taylor (hamstring) has been ruled out for Thursday's game against Carolina, Deepi Sidhu of the Texans' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The announcement from coach David Culley comes as little surprise after Taylor sustained what's believed to be a Grade 2 left hamstring strain in Sunday's 31-21 loss to the Browns, per Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston. The injury typically carries a four-week recovery timeline, so Taylor could be a candidate to move to injured reserve, which would entail an absence of at least three weeks. Third-round selection Davis Mills will step in at quarterback for his first NFL start Thursday, while the Texans plan to elevate Jeff Driskel from the practice squad to serve as the rookie's understudy.
Sep 20, 2021
Expected to miss time
Taylor is expected to be out "for a while" due to the hamstring injury he suffered Sunday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Though not yet officially confirmed by the Texans, the QB isn't expected to play Thursday night against the Panthers and an IR stint could be in the cards for Taylor. With Deshaun Watson not an option to replace him, Davis Mills is in line to start in place of Taylor this week, at a minimum, while Jeff Driskel is a candidate to be elevated from the practice squad to Houston's active roster.
Sep 20, 2021
No practice Monday
Taylor (hamstring) did not participate in Monday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Taylor has been labeled day-to-day ahead of Thursday's clash against the Panthers, before which he will only have two more chances to upgrade his practice activity. Deshaun Watson has already been ruled out as a candidate to play Thursday, meaning rookie third-round pick Davis Mills will be in line to draw his first NFL start if Taylor can't go. The Texans would also likely activate Jeff Driskel from the practice squad if Taylor isn't available.
Sep 20, 2021
Day-to-day ahead of TNF
Coach David Culley said Monday that Taylor (hamstring) is day-to-day ahead of Thursday's matchup against the Panthers, Deepi Sidhu of the Texans' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
"If [Taylor's] ready to go, he'll play," Culley said regarding Thursday's home game against the Panthers. The veteran signal-caller completed 10 of 11 pass attempts for 125 yards and a touchdown before being forced out of Sunday's 31-21 loss to the Browns, and he also turned his lone carry into a 15-yard score. If Taylor isn't able to recover in time for a quick turnaround Thursday, rookie Davis Mills will be in line to draw his first NFL start. No matter the case, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston reports that Deshaun Watson will remain a healthy scratch.
Sep 19, 2021
Iffy for Thursday
Taylor is slated to undergo an MRI on his injured hamstring, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
More should be known about the severity of Taylor's injury by Monday, but Rapoport indicates that sources tell him the veteran QB isn't expected to be able to play Thursday night against the Panthers. If that's the case, the stage would be set for rookie Davis Mills to draw his first NFL start.
Sep 19, 2021
Injures hamstring
Taylor was forced out of Sunday's game against the Browns with a hamstring injury.
ANALYSIS
With Taylor out of the contest, rookie Davis Mills has taken over at QB for the Texans. Prior to his exit, Taylor completed 10 of 11 pass attempts for 125 yards and a TD and ran once for a 15-yard score.
Sep 12, 2021
Strong showing against Jaguars
Taylor completed 21 of his 33 pass attempts for 291 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's Week 1 contest against the Jaguars. He added four rushes for 40 yards.
ANALYSIS
Taylor got the Texans off to a hot start offensively, leading the team to 27 points in the first half. He accounted for two touchdowns through the air, which went for seven and eight yards, respectively. With a 20-point lead through two quarters, Houston played conservatively for much of the second half which limited Taylor's ability to produce further. While this was a positive start to the campaign for Taylor, he is likely to face a more difficult task when he takes on the Browns in Week 2.
Sep 6, 2021
Confirmed as starter
Coach David Culley confirmed Monday that Taylor will start at quarterback for the Texans in Sunday's season opener against the Jaguars, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Though last year's starter Deshaun Watson remains on the Texans' 53-man roster, heading into Week 1 he's expected to a healthy scratch on game days. Also in the team's QB mix is rookie Davis Mills, but early on Houston will turn to Taylor to helm what could end up being a run-heavy attack, an approach that's viable considering the presence of a capable backfield headed by Mark Ingram, Phillip Lindsay, David Johnson and Rex Burkhead.
Aug 22, 2021
Little work Saturday
Taylor completed two of five passes for 10 yards in Saturday's preseason win over the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
The 32-year-old was under center for Houston's first few series before giving way to Davis Mills, and while Taylor mostly just handed the ball off, he did lead the Texans to their only offensive touchdown of the night on an opening drive capped by a Mark Ingram plunge from the two-yard line. Taylor is on track to be the Week 1 starter for the team, and as a result he likely won't see any further action in the preseason.
Aug 15, 2021
Sharp in brief appearance
Taylor completed all four of his passes for 40 yards in Saturday's preseason win over the Packers. He didn't throw a touchdown or an interception.
ANALYSIS
With Deshaun Watson's status for the season and with the Texans still very much up in the air, Taylor could be the Week 1 starter for Houston, and he was treated as such in the team's preseason opener. The veteran QB looked sharp on the opening drive, leading the Texans to a field goal before giving way to Davis Mills. Taylor has seen little action over the last three seasons, but the last time he started in 2017 for the Bills, he posted modest passing numbers while supplying enough production as a runner to give him some fantasy utility in 2QB and superflex formats. Whether the 32-year-old still can make an impact with his legs remains to be seen, however, as he stayed firmly in the pocket during his one series Saturday.
Aug 11, 2021
Listed atop unofficial depth chart
The Texans' unofficial depth chart lists Taylor as the team's No. 1 quarterback, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
This shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, with Taylor continuing to log first-team practice reps and Deshaun Watson's future with the franchise unclear. Currently listed behind Taylor on the unofficial depth chart are Jeff Driskel and rookie Davis Mills, followed by Watson. At this stage, unless things change in a hurry, Taylor is trending toward being the team's starter in Week 1.
Aug 1, 2021
Weekend absence excused
Taylor did not practice Saturday for personal reasons, Aaron Wilson of Houston Sports News reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach David Culley said Taylor's absence was excused, and that the 31-year-old will be back with the team Monday. Taylor's personal day gave rookie quarterback Davis Mills an opportunity to work with the first-team offense, while Jeff Driskel handled second-team reps. Meanwhile, Deshaun Watson once again participated in camp activities, but didn't handle any full-team work. Through the early days of training camp, Taylor has operated as Houston's clear top option at quarterback.
Mar 16, 2021
Signing with Texans
Taylor has agreed to a one-year deal with the Texans that is worth up to $12.5 million, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
For now, Taylor can be penciled in as the team's No. 2 QB behind Deshaun Watson. He does, however, provide the Texans with an experienced starting option in the event that Watson's status with the team changes in any way in the coming weeks/months.
Jan 9, 2021
Accidental injury mires season
Taylor completed 16 of 30 passes for 208 yards across two different games in the 2020 season.
ANALYSIS
The veteran really only played one game, starting the season opener before a medical accident left Taylor with a punctured lung which forced rookie Justin Herbert into the starting lineup. The 2020 No. 6 overall pick ran off with the job from there, eventually setting a number of rookie passing records en route to being a frontrunner for the Rookie of the Year award. With Taylor set to enter unrestricted free agency this offseason, the 31-year-old could try to catch on with another team who may give him an opportunity at a starting job.
Nov 22, 2020
Active Week 11
Taylor (ribs) is active for Sunday's game against the Jets.
ANALYSIS
The veteran was considered questionable with the injury to his ribs, but he'll be suiting up for Sunday's contest. Taylor will continue to serve as the backup to starter Justin Herbert.
Nov 20, 2020
Officially questionable for Week 11
Taylor (ribs) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Jets, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor managed to suit up as Los Angeles' No. 2 quarterback Week 10 despite his lingering ribs injury, but he can't be considered a lock to take the field against the Jets. Easton Stick will slot in as the backup to Justin Herbert if Taylor can't go.
Nov 18, 2020
Ribs still bothersome
Taylor was a non-participant at Wednesday's practice due to a rib injury, Jeff Miller of the Los Angeles Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor was able to suit up behind starting Justin Herbert for last Sunday's game against the Raiders, but he appears to still be battling the rib issue that forced him to miss games early in the season. The veteran will look to get healthy, but it appears he'll only have a chance to see the field again this season with an injury or poor play from Herbert. If Taylor was too miss Week 11, Easton Stick would assume back up duties for the contest.
Nov 6, 2020
Will dress against Raiders
Coach Anthony Lynn confirmed Friday that Taylor (chest) will back up Justin Herbert against the Raiders on Sunday, Jeff Miller of the Los Angeles Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor was inactive for the past two games despite practicing fully, but he'll finally be active again in this battle of recently relocated west coast teams. He's unlikely to see the field barring an injury to Herbert, as the rookie has hit the ground running as a starter.
Nov 4, 2020
Practicing fully again
Taylor (chest) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Taylor practiced fully in each of the last two weeks but was ultimately inactive, and that should be the expected regimen at this point. The 31-year-old quarterback hasn't played since a team doctor punctured his lung with a pain-killing injection prior to the Week 2 matchup against the Chiefs. If Taylor sits out again Sunday versus the Raiders, Easton Stick will back up Justin Herbert.
Nov 1, 2020
Not suiting up Sunday
Taylor (chest) is inactive for Sunday's game at Denver, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 31-year-old was considered questionable after practicing as a full participant all week for the second straight week, but he's once again inactive. Easton Stick will once again serve as the backup to Justin Herbert with Taylor not in uniform.
Oct 30, 2020
Questionable again Week 8
Taylor (chest) is questionable for Sunday's game versus the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Taylor practiced fully all week, but he followed the same course last week and was ultimately inactive, as he's still working his way back from the punctured lung he sustained when a team doctor misplaced a pain-killing injection ahead of a Week 2 loss to the Chiefs. It wouldn't be surprising if Taylor is inactive once again, which would make Easton Stick the backup to Justin Herbert on Sunday.
Oct 28, 2020
Full participant Wednesday
Taylor (ribs) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Taylor practiced fully last Wednesday but was ultimately inactive for Sunday's game against the Jaguars, so he's not in the clear yet. The 31-year-old quarterback hasn't played since a team doctor accidentally punctured his lung while administering a pain-killing injection prior to a Week 2 matchup against the Chiefs. If Taylor sits out again, Easton Stick will serve as Justin Herbert's backup again Sunday versus Denver.
Oct 25, 2020
Won't go against Jaguars
Taylor (ribs/chest) is inactive for Sunday's matchup against Jacksonville.
ANALYSIS
The 31-year-old signal-caller has been inactive since a team doctor accidentally punctured his lung with a pain-killing injection prior to Week 2's matchup against the Chiefs. Though Taylor was capable of logging a full practice session Wednesday, the outlook of his injury has not progressed to the point where he is ready for game action. North Dakota State standout Easton Stick will serve as the backup quarterback Sunday against the Jaguars should an injury arise to starter Justin Herbert.
Oct 23, 2020
Questionable for Week 7
Taylor (ribs/chest) is officially listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Jacksonville.
ANALYSIS
If Taylor's active for the first time since having his lung punctured by a pain-killing injection prior to Week 2, he will back up rookie Justin Herbert, who topped 300 yards in his first two starts and added a 7:1 TD:INT in the two subsequent games. Depending on Taylor's health, the Chargers could opt to keep third-stringer Easton Stick active as well.
Oct 21, 2020
Upgraded Wednesday
Taylor (ribs/chest) was a full participant during Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Taylor had missed the past four games before the team's bye week after a pain-killing injection accidentally punctured his lung prior to the start of the Week 2 game against the Chiefs. It's certainly a great sign to see Taylor back healthy, however, coach Anthony Lynn already confirmed earlier this season that Justin Herbert will be the team's starting quarterback moving forward. With Taylor returning, he'll assume back up duties for Week 7 with Easton Stick relegating to the clear No. 3 option at quarterback.
Oct 10, 2020
Out once more
Taylor (ribs/chest) has been ruled out ahead of Monday's contest against the Saints, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor will miss his fourth consecutive game due to the pain-killing injection which accidentally punctured his lung prior to the start of the Week 2 game against the Chiefs. More importantly, coach Anthony Lynn confirmed earlier this week No. 6 overall pick, Justin Herbert, would be the starter moving forward once Taylor returned from injury. Easton Stick will act as the primary backup to Herbert on Monday.
Oct 8, 2020
Loses starting job to Herbert
Coach Anthony Lynn has announced that Taylor (ribs/chest) will back up Justin Herbert once he's cleared to play, Gilbert Manzano of The Orange County reports.
ANALYSIS
The Chargers had originally planned to ease Herbert -- who was the No. 6 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft -- into his anticipated role as the team's franchise QB, but that process was accelerated when he played very well after Taylor suffered a punctured lung while receiving a pain-killing injection to his rib area just before Los Angeles' Week 2 kickoff. If Taylor is unable to bounce back in time for Monday night's game against the Saints, Easton Stick will continue to serve as Herbert's backup in Week 5.
Oct 2, 2020
Out again Sunday
Taylor (chest) has been ruled out for Sunday's contest in Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
Officially, Taylor will miss a third consecutive contest due to his injection mishap prior to Week 2. In his stead, rookie first-round pick Justin Herbert will continue to lead the Chargers offense.
Sep 30, 2020
Won't practice Wednesday
Taylor (chest) won't practice Wednesday, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Though the Chargers haven't ruled Taylor out for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers, it's still expected that Justin Herbert will draw the team's Week 4 start at QB. Herbert will thus take first-team practice reps Wednesday, while Taylor is viewed as week-to-week, per Gilbert Manzano of The Orange County Register.
Sep 28, 2020
Not ruled out for Week 4
Coach Anthony Lynn said Monday that he's "not in a position" to rule Taylor (chest) out for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers, Gilbert Manzano of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor is recovering from both a punctured lung sustained Week 2 and cracked ribs suffered during the season opener, and Adam Schefter of ESPN previously reported that he's considered unlikely to face the Buccaneers. However, Lynn has stated on multiple occasions that Taylor will reclaim the starting job when fully healthy, so his chances of returning Week 4 can't be fully ruled out, but it looks as though Justin Herbert is at least trending toward receiving another chance to showcase his talents under center.
Sep 27, 2020
Unlikely for Week 4
Taylor (chest), who has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Panthers, is unlikely to gain clearance to play Week 4 at Tampa Bay, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
In addition to dealing with the cracked ribs he sustained in the Chargers' season-opening win over the Bengals, Taylor is recovering from a punctured lung, the result of a misplaced injection he received from a team doctor prior to the Week 2 loss to the Chiefs. Justin Herbert took over as the starter for that game on short notice and will likely be under center again for at least two more games, as doctors have advised Taylor to avoid strenuous activity for two weeks. Head coach Anthony Lynn has said that Taylor will reclaim the starting job when healthy, but the Chargers' thinking on that front could change depending on how well Herbert performs Weeks 3 and 4.
Sep 25, 2020
Officially ruled out
Taylor (lung) has officially been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
Taylor, who suffered a punctured lung while receiving a pain-killing injection to his rib area just before last Sunday's kickoff, will sit out Week 3 action, at a minimum, which sets the stage for rookie Justin Herbert to make his second straight start this weekend. It doesn't seem likely that Taylor will be available in Week 4, while the Chargers have yet to outline a return timetable for the veteran signal-caller.
Sep 23, 2020
Expected to miss time
Doctors have advised Taylor, who suffered a punctured lung this past Sunday, not to play "indefinitely," ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor's injury occurred just before Week 2's kickoff against the Chiefs, when a team doctor accidentally punctured the QB's lung while administering a pain-killing injection. We'll await official confirmation of Taylor's status from the Chargers, but at this stage, Justin Herbert is on track to start this weekend's game against the Panthers, at a minimum.
Sep 23, 2020
Lung punctured by pain-killing injection
A Chargers team doctor accidentally punctured Taylor's lung prior to this past Sunday's kickoff while administering a pain-killing injection to the QB's rib area,ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
ANALYSIS
Per the report, Taylor, who was listed as a full practice participant last Friday with a listed "ribs" issue, received the injection to address cracked ribs, but afterward was forced to sit out Sunday's game against the Chiefs, while rookie Justin Herbert drew the start at QB. It's unclear how much time Taylor will miss, but it seems unlikely that he'll be available for Sunday's game against the Panthers.
Sep 21, 2020
Injury details surface
Taylor missed Sunday's loss to the Chiefs due to complications from a pregame injection that was meant to help a rib injury, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor was briefly hospitalized because he experienced chest pains and difficulty breathing, and he's considered week-to-week moving forward. Rookie QB Justin Herbert performed well in Taylor's stead, but coach Anthony Lynn stated that Taylor will be the starting QB again once he's 100 percent, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Sep 21, 2020
Considered week-to-week
The Chargers consider Taylor (chest) week-to-week, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor was admitted to the hospital due to breathing problems during pregame warmups Sunday, resulting in rookie quarterback Justin Herbert getting the opportunity to impress in his NFL debut. Coach Anthony Lynn said after the contest that Taylor, who has since been discharged from the hospital, will re-enter the starting lineup if he's 100 percent healthy, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. As such, the Chargers' starting signal-caller for Week 3 against Carolina may remain uncertain until later this week, after the team has had a chance to gather more information about Taylor's health.
Sep 20, 2020
Discharged from hospital
Taylor (chest) was discharged from the hospital Sunday night after being admitted due to breathing problems, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Per a team statement, Taylor's status for the Week 3 game against the Panthers will be determined later this week. Most importantly, the quarterback appears to be alright after having difficulty breathing prior to the kickoff of Sunday's game against the Chiefs.
Sep 20, 2020
At hospital
Coach Anthony Lynn said in his post-game interview after Sunday's loss to the Chiefs that Taylor (chest) is at the hospital, Jeff Miller of the Los Angeles Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The exact nature of Taylor's chest injury is still unclear at this time, but it's concerning that he needed to go to the hospital after leaving in pregame warmups. Rookie Justin Herbert got the start with Jackson sidelined and topped 300 passing yards in the 23-20 overtime loss, so it's possible Herbert will remain the starter even when Taylor is cleared to return, though there's still no established timetable regarding Taylor's return.
Sep 20, 2020
Unavailable Sunday
Taylor (chest) has been ruled out for the rest of Sunday's game against the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
Taylor injured his chest following pregame warmups Sunday, which resulted in rookie Justin Herbert getting a surprise start at QB for the Chargers. Taylor's status will need to be monitored in advance of next week's game against the Panthers, but either way, a strong effort by Herbert on Sunday could lead to a quicker than anticipated ascension to the top of the team's depth chart for the No. 6 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Sep 20, 2020
Suffers chest injury after warmups
Taylor injured his chest after pregame warmups Sunday, and as a result Justin Herbert started the Chargers' Week 2 contest against the Chiefs, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Herbert's surprise start thus has a logical explanation, while it's not clear if Taylor will be called upon to enter the game, given that the Chargers have deemed his return questionable.
Sep 13, 2020
Does little in Sunday win
Taylor completed 16 of his 30 attempts for 208 yards in the 16-13 win Sunday over the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
The veteran quarterback surprisingly did little with his legs, finishing the afternoon with six carries for seven yards. Taylor struggled to get in sync throughout the first half, routinely opting for safe throws while rarely looking downfield. A 33-yard strike to Hunter Henry did set up a late field goal at the end of the half which seemed to propel the offense out of its funk, but even then Taylor and company only saw just a modest bump in passing yardage in the second half. The trio of Henry, Mike Williams and Keenan Allen unsurprisingly warranted most of Taylor's attention, but dynamic pass-catching back, Austin Ekeler, was mysteriously absent in the passing game plan as he was caught his lone target for three yards. A heavy emphasis on the rushing attack masked Taylor's inefficiencies on offense in the come-from-behind effort, but it was hardly a sterling debut for the new starting quarterback.
Sep 2, 2020
Confirmed as Week 1 starter
Coach Anthony Lynn confirmed Wednesday that Taylor will get the start Week 1 at Cincinnati, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
There was never any sign of a real competition, but it's nonetheless useful to have confirmation of Taylor's role. Training-camp footage from Hard Knocks hinted at Justin Herbert having some trouble learning OC Shane Steichen's offense, whereas Taylor is a 10-year veteran who already spent one season (2019) working with Steichen in Los Angeles. There's still a decent chance Herbert makes starts before the end of the season, but it sounds like Taylor should have a pretty long leash early in the year.
Sep 2, 2020
Should hold starting job
Taylor likely will start "most, if not all" of the Chargers' games this year, according to Daniel Popper of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
First-round pick Justin Herbert has acknowledged the difficulty of learning an NFL offense, facing the additional challenge of entering the league in a year with no OTAs or preseason. There hasn't been any hint of the rookie making a push for the starting job, nor does it sound like Herbert will be ready for action early in the year. Taylor might eventually find himself looking over his shoulder if he doesn't play well, but he should have some slack through at least the first month of the season. He'll start off with a Week 1 contest in Cincinnati, leading an offense that may not have Mike Williams (shoulder) in the lineup.
Jul 29, 2020
Inching toward Week 1 start
Taylor is trending toward getting the Week 1 start at Cincinnati, Gilbert Manzano of The Orange County Register reports. "He'll probably be our Day 1 starter," coach Anthony Lynn said.
ANALYSIS
The Chargers' season opener is more than six weeks in the future (Sept. 13), but Lynn seems to be deferring to the more experienced Taylor versus greenhorn Justin Herbert to direct the offense off the bat. On the other side of the coin, the team made Herbert the sixth overall pick in this year's draft, so there likely will be pressure at some point to see what the rookie can do. Taylor has only served in mop-up duty with the Chargers, tossing six passes in eight appearances. When he was given a chance as the Bills' regular starting QB from 2015 through 2017, he compiled a 22-20 record, completed 62.6 percent of his passes, and had per-16-game averages of 3,221 yards, a 19:6 TD:INT and 240 more yards on the ground.
Apr 24, 2020
Still "in driver seat" to start
Taylor is "in the driver seat" to start the 2020 season despite the selection of Justin Herbert No. 6 overall during the 2020 NFL Draft according to head coach Anthony Lynn and general manager Tom Telesco, James Crepea of The Oregonian reports.
ANALYSIS
It's an interesting remark considering the head coach, general manager duo repeatedly iterated earlier in the offseason that Taylor was the obvious choice as a starter, so the change in language to a potential "competition" is worth noting. It still feels unlikely Taylor will cede snaps to the team's newest first-round pick immediately, if only because Herbert will likely take some time to get acclimated to the offense and his teammates in what could be an unconventional OTA period. Still, it seems likely there will be pressure from outside sources pushing Herbert into the starting lineup, particularly given his draft status compared to the less-heralded Taylor.
Mar 18, 2020
Positioned for starting job?
The Chargers are planning to move forward with Taylor as their lone veteran quarterback, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The Chargers tried to sign Tom Brady but lost out to the Bucs. Rather than pivoting to a lesser veteran, the team will move forward with Taylor and Easton Stick, presumably hoping to add an early draft pick at the position. It's also possible the Chargers change their mind and add another veteran, though Wednesday's report suggests it won't be a priority.
Feb 12, 2020
Ready for shot at starting job?
Chargers general manager Tom Telesco implied Taylor and Easton Stick could have a chance to compete for the starting job, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Telesco didn't really get into details, merely mentioning that the team likes its internal options. With Philip Rivers set to sign elsewhere, the Chargers have often been mentioned as a sensible destination for Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert, a probable first-round pick who recently was named Senior Bowl MVP. Taylor is under contract through 2020, while Stick -- a 2019 fifth-round selection -- is signed through 2022.
Jan 23, 2020
Quiet as backup in 2019
Taylor appeared in eight games during the 2019 season, completing four-of-six passes for 33 yards and one touchdown while adding 10 rushes for seven yards on the ground.
ANALYSIS
Taylor operated in a backup role for the Chargers this season, playing behind starting quarterback Philip Rivers apart from a few specialty formations. Rivers will become an unrestricted free agent once the 2019 season concludes, leaving Taylor, who has one year left on his contract, as the presumed starter if Rivers decides to sign elsewhere. The Chargers could explore options in the draft, but Taylor's past experience as an NFL starter should give him a good chance of being the primary signal caller for the 2020 season if Rivers explores other options.
