2026 World Cup Betting Odds: Chalk Always Prevails

Before diving into my betting strategy for the 2026 World Cup winner, it’s important to lay out the following disclaimer: chalk always prevails in this tournament. 

Sure, there are going to be some upsets, including top nations crashing out in the early rounds, but we never see a Cinderella story end with a World Cup win. The surprise teams tend to get eliminated by the semi-finals. 

In the end, one of the top nations is highly likely to prevail.

Just take a look at recent World Cup winners to see what I mean:

• Brazil 2014: Germany
• South Africa 2010: Spain
• Germany 2006: Italy
• Korea/Japan 2002: Brazil
• France 1998: France

As you can see here, there have been two countries with multiple World Cups in the last 10 tournaments: Argentina, France, Germany, and Brazil. The others were won by Italy and Spain. As mentioned, the top squads get it done.

That doesn’t necessarily mean a team that has won before is the only viable option to pick as a winner, but it has to be one of the top seven. That narrows down the list to the following (odds are from BetOnline):

• Spain (+500)
• France (+500)
• England (+750)
• Brazil (+900)
• Argentina (+950)
• Portugal (+1100)
• Germany (+1600)

Spain has the current best player in the world, Lamine Yamal. Plus, they just won the 2024 Euro. France could field two contending teams with the talent they have. England remains in the mix, especially following a dominant qualifying campaign.

Brazil was disappointing throughout qualification, but they’re led by legendary manager Carlo Ancelotti, so we can’t count them out. It’s hard to repeat as World Cup champions, but Argentina has the talent to do so.

Even though Portugal has never won, this is one of their deepest teams in recent memory. Perhaps they can get it done in Cristiano Ronaldo’s final World Cup. As for Germany, we can never rule them out in the long run.

I don’t see any team other than these seven winning the World Cup. Yes, the Netherlands has talent, and Norway looked great in qualifying, but chalk always gets it done.

2026 World Cup Best Bets

When betting on a team to win the World Cup, I’m going to target three markets at BetOnline:

• Triple Chance: Pick three teams to win the World Cup. If one wins, you win.
• Double Chance: Pick two teams to win the World Cup. If one wins, you win.
• Winner: Pick one team to win the World Cup.

We’re going to divvy up our bankroll as follows:

• 1 unit on Triple Chance
• 0.5 unit on Double Chance
• 0.25 unit on Winner

The goal is for our Triple Chance and Double Chance picks to act as a hedge if our main World Cup winner doesn’t hit.

With that in mind, here are my three 2026 World Cup bets to lock in right now.

Spain, France, or Portugal to win World Cup (+140)

We’re going to highlight Portugal in this section. This is a team stacked with talent all over the pitch. Bruno Fernandes provides creativity in the midfield, Rafael Leao adds pace on the wing, Ruben Dias is a rock at the back, and Vitinha holds it down in the middle. There are several players I didn’t even mention here, which highlights the depth of this squad.

Wouldn’t it be a storybook ending to Cristiano Ronaldo’s legendary career to win a World Cup? They certainly have the talent to get it done.

I’m adding Portugal as my third team to go along with my other two choices because I believe they’re undervalued in betting markets, priced behind Brazil and England. You can argue that Portugal has a better roster than both of those squads.

Including Portugal in my Triple Chance gives me +140 odds, which is a bit more appealing than going with Argentina or England.

Spain or France to win World Cup (+210)

For this one, we’ll highlight Spain, who are my No. 2 pick to win the World Cup. After winning Euro 2024, it’s been more of the same from Spain, coming off a dominant qualifying campaign, where they won five of six games.

This team is led by the top player in the world, Lamine Yamal, who is joined by other top talents like Pedri, Rodri, and Dani Almo. It’s going to be tough for opponents to slow down this attack.

Taking Spain in this Double and Triple Chance hedges against the chance that my top pick, France, fails to get it done.

France to win World Cup (+500)

Here we have my top pick to win the World Cup. France is simply too stacked, with Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, William Saliba, and much more.

But what sets France apart is the longevity of its manager. Didier Deschamps has been the manager of Les Bleus for 14 years now.

That has allowed his system to become entrenched among his players.

Now I know he’s been criticized for being too defensive at times, but the results speak for themselves: one World Cup win and one finals appearance in the last two tournaments.

Even as co-favorites with Spain, I think that France is underpriced. I think they should be the clear top favorites here.
