Allows one run over six frames
Medina did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing one run on three hits and three walks over six innings against the Twins. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Medina was efficient for most of the contest and didn't allow a run until the sixth inning, which would come across on a double-play ball after the right-hander gave up two hits to open the frame. It was the first time since July 7 that he went at least six innings, though he was still unable to secure his fourth win due to a lack of run support. On the downside, Medina has now issued at least three walks in four of his last five starts.

Tagged with 10th loss
Medina (3-10) took the loss against Detroit on Thursday, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out five batters over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Medina gave up a pair of runs in the first frame but settled down with three scoreless innings thereafter. However, he was bitten by the Tigers again in the fifth, surrendering three runs -- the last of which came home on a balk. Medina did show some positive signs with 15 swinging strikes and just one walk, but he's had a rough time in September, posting a 6.62 ERA and 1.58 WHIP across 17.2 innings over four starts.
Sep 10, 2023
Tagged for five runs
Medina (3-9) allowed five runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three over 4.1 innings to take the loss versus the Rangers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Medina worked his pitch count up to 84 (52 strikes) in this outing, up from 70 in his return from a finger injury Monday. The right-hander gave up three runs in the first inning and another two in the fifth. Medina has gone without a win in his last seven outings, but he's taken only two losses in that span. He's now at a 5.68 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 90:49 K:BB through 95 innings over 20 appearances (15 starts) this season. Medina is projected for a home start versus the Padres in his next outing.
Sep 5, 2023
Goes 4.2 innings in no-decision
Medina did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks over 4.2 innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Medina held Toronto off the board through his first four frames Sunday before he was tagged for three runs in the fifth, forcing him out of the game after throwing 70 pitches. The rookie right-hander was likely on a pitch count, making his first start since Aug. 18, though he's failed to make it through five innings in each of his last four starts, allowing 10 earned runs in that span (15 innings). Overall, Medina's 3-8 on the season with a 5.46 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 87:46 K:BB across 14 starts (90.2 innings). He'll look to go deeper in his next outing, currently scheduled for this weekend in Texas.

Activated for Monday's start
Medina (blister) was activated from the 15-day injured list Monday.
ANALYSIS
Medina will rejoin the Athletics' rotation Monday against the Blue Jays after missing the last couple weeks with a blister on his pitching hand. The young right-hander went just 3.1 innings in his lone rehab start, so he's probably not prepared to pitch terribly deep into Monday's outing.
Aug 31, 2023
Sharp in rehab outing
Medina (blister) struck out seven over 3.1 frames of one-run ball in a rehab start with Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Medina missed the previous two weeks of action with a blister on his right index finger but didn't seem to be affected in Wednesday's outing. The Athletics have not yet committed to Medina rejoining the rotation next week, but it appears likely. He looks set up to face the Blue Jays and Rangers next week if he is indeed activated.
Aug 28, 2023
Making rehab apperance Wednesday
Medina (finger) completed a bullpen session Sunday and is set to pitch for Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Medina made it through a side session without any setbacks, paving the way for a trip to the minor leagues to continue his rehab. The right-hander landed on the 15-day IL on Aug. 21 due to a blister on his right index finger, so he may only need an appearance or two before returning.
Aug 27, 2023
Full bullpen session on tap
Medina (finger) came away from Friday's touch-and-feel bullpen session without any setbacks and is therefore set for a full session early in the week, the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander was able to throw without a bandage on his blister-affected finger Friday, so he'll take the next step early in the week. If that goes similarly well, Medina may only need to throw another bullpen or a live batting practice before being activated when first eligible next Sunday.
Aug 24, 2023
Set for bullpen
Medina (finger) will throw a bullpen session with Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday, Joey Pollizze of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Medina landed on the injured list Monday due to a blister on his right index finger. He'll be sidelined until early September at a minimum as a result, but it sounds as if he could make one rehab outing before being activated if his finger responds well to resumed throwing.
Aug 21, 2023
Placed on injured list
Medina was placed on the 15-day injured list retroactive to Aug. 19 with a blister on his right index finger.
ANALYSIS
It's unclear when Medina picked up the injury, but one way or another he will be unavailable until early September. Spencer Patton was brought up from Triple-A Las Vegas to take Medina's place on the roster.
Aug 19, 2023
Goes three innings Friday
Medina allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits while striking out one and walking none over three innings in a no-decision versus the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Medina's gone fewer than five innings in each of his last three outings, and it appears the Athletics may be slowing him down as he approaches a career-high workload. He's already covered 99.1 innings between the majors and Triple-A this season, while his career high is 106.1 innings in 2021. Medina's also had a couple of rough shorter outings lately, which has put him at a 5.44 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 84:43 K:BB over 18 appearances (13 starts). The right-hander is still in the rotation in terms of his schedule, which tentatively lines him up for a home outing against the Royals next week.
Aug 18, 2023
Working in bulk relief
Medina will work in bulk relief Friday against the Orioles, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Francisco Perez is going to open the game for Oakland, but Medina is set up to handle the majority of the innings. This might just be a workload-management strategy with the 24-year-old Medina, who has delivered a 3.15 ERA with 38 strikeouts over his last 34.1 innings (six starts, one relief appearance) dating back to late June.
Aug 12, 2023
Solid in no-decision
Medina did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over four innings against the Nationals. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Though Medina was pulled prior to the fifth inning for a second consecutive start, he turned in a strong outing and only walked two batters after handing out five free passes last time out. The 24-year-old has quietly put together a handful of solid performances, tallying a 3.62 ERA and a 25:11 K:BB over his last five appearances (19.1 innings). Medina's tentatively lined up to face the Orioles for his next start.
Aug 7, 2023
Walks five batters
Medina allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and five walks over 3.1 innings in Sunday's win over the Giants. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Medina never found a groove Sunday as he allowed a run in each of the first two frames followed by two more in the third inning. He gave up just three total earned runs in his previous three starts and turned in his shortest outing since June 3. Medina has a solid 3.55 ERA since the start of July but his season mark jumped to 5.47. His next outing is lined up to be in Washington.
Jul 30, 2023
Takes hard-luck loss
Medina (3-8) allowed two runs on six hits and struck out six without walking a batter over 5.1 innings, but he took the loss Sunday versus the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Medina threw 60 of 91 pitches for strikes and did well to keep the ball in play. Ryan McMahon was his main nemesis, as the Colorado infielder had a pair of run-scoring knocks in the contest. Medina has allowed a total of three runs over 16 innings across three starts since the All-Star break, but he has just one win to show for it. He's at a 5.35 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 76:36 K:BB through 15 appearances (11 starts) this season. Medina is projected to make his next start at home versus the Giants.
Jul 23, 2023
Strikes out six
Medina allowed a run on two hits and three walks while striking out six over five innings in a no-decision versus the Astros on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Medina turned in a solid performance, though he needed 93 pitches (59 strikes) to get through five frames. He limited the damage to a Yanier Diaz solo shot in the fifth inning. Medina has allowed just one run, five hits and four walks over 10.2 innings across his two starts since the All-Star break. He's trimmed his ERA to 5.50 with a 1.49 WHIP and 70:36 K:BB through 70.1 innings over 14 outings (10 starts) this season. The 24-year-old is projected to make his next start at Colorado.
Jul 19, 2023
Picks up win
Medina (3-7) allowed three hits and a walk while striking out six over 5.2 shutout innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Medina came up one out short of a quality start. He made his last appearance as a bulk reliever July 7 versus Boston, but he was better in his return to a starting role. Through 13 appearances (nine starts), Medina has a 5.79 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 64:33 K:BB over 65.1 innings this season. The right-hander is lined up for a challenging home start versus the Astros over the weekend.
Jul 7, 2023
Fans nine in bulk relief
Medina allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings in Friday's loss to Boston. He struck out nine and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Medina entered the game in the second inning after Sam Long loaded the bases with no outs. All three runners would cross home with Medina on the mound, followed by four more throughout his six frames. He struck out a career-high nine batters while issuing just one walk after dishing out 12 free passes over his previous 10 innings. Medina now owns a 6.34 ERA with a 58:32 K:BB through 59.2 frames this season.
Jul 7, 2023
Ticketed for bulk relief
Medina is expected to serve as the Athletics' bulk reliever Friday in Boston, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He will follow opener Sam Long. The bulk relief role isn't foreign to Medina, who has been used both in that capacity as well as a traditional starter this season. Unfortunately, he hasn't been terribly effective in either role.
Jul 1, 2023
Notches second win
Medina (2-7) earned the win Friday, allowing one run on four hits and five walks over five innings in a 7-4 win over the White Sox. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Medina finally had a solid night amidst a rough rookie campaign thus far. In fact, this was the first time that the right-hander completed five innings without allowing multiple runs. Although this was a positive sign, he still can't be trusted yet for fantasy purposes until he strings together more of these quality starts.
Jun 26, 2023
Struggles with control
Medina (1-7) took the loss Sunday, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and seven walks over five innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Medina took his seventh loss of the campaign Sunday, tied for the eighth-most in baseball, and dished out a season-high seven walks over five frames. Medina's lack of control got him in trouble time and time again, as three of the four runs against him came from runners he issued a walk to, while he also let a run score off a wild pitch. Through 10 appearances (48.2 innings), Medina has stumbled to a 6.84 ERA and a 45:26 K:BB while serving up 2.0 HR/9. He's tentatively scheduled to make another start next weekend at home versus the White Sox.
Jun 20, 2023
Tosses 4.1 innings in bulk relief
Medina allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out four over 4.1 innings in Tuesday's 3-2 loss against the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Medina took over for opener Ken Waldichuk with two outs in the second inning and managed to hold the Guardians scoreless until the seventh, where he allowed a leadoff double to Myles Straw, who would come around to score after Medina's departure. His one run allowed set a season low for the 24-year-old, who has given up four or more runs in three of his last five appearances. Medina hasn't lasted more than six innings in a game this season, while also failing to go five innings in three of his last four. Through nine appearances (six starts), Medina owns a 7.01 ERA and a 41:19 K:BB with 10 homers allowed in 43.2 innings.
Jun 20, 2023
Pitching behind opener Tuesday
Medina will serve as a bulk reliever behind opening pitcher Ken Waldichuk in Tuesday's game against the Guardians, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Since he had previously been serving as a starter before transitioning to a bullpen role about a month ago, Waldichuk could be capable of covering somewhere around 1-to-3 innings before turning the game over to Medina. While pitching out of the bullpen likely puts a cap on Medina's potential innings count, it should enhance his chances of factoring into the decision. Over his last five outings, Medina has gone 1-4 with an 8.06 ERA and 1.88 WHIP across 22.1 innings.
Jun 15, 2023
Suffers sixth loss
Medina (1-6) took the loss Wednesday, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk over 4.2 innings against the Rays. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Medina failed to complete at least five innings for the second time over his past three starts after reaching that mark in each of his first five appearances. The 24-year-old has allowed at least three runs in seven of his first eight MLB outings and sports an ugly 7.55 ERA. However, with Freddy Tarnok (shoulder), Drew Rucinski (knee) and Mason Miller (elbow) all on the injured list, Medina figures to remain a steady piece of Oakland's rotation moving forward.
Jun 9, 2023
Earns first MLB win
Medina (1-5) allowed two runs on three hits and three walks over five innings Friday, striking out six and earning a win against the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Medina allowed two runs in the second inning followed by four shutout frames after Sam Moll's scoreless first inning. The two runs were the fewest given up by Medina in any outing this season. He now holds a 7.53 ERA and a 32:17 K:BB through 34.2 frames. The 24-year-old righty is currently lined up to face the Rays at home next week though it's unclear how the team will deploy him moving forward.
Jun 8, 2023
Bulk reliever Friday
Medina is set to work as a bulk reliever Friday versus the Brewers, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sam Moll will take the mound first as an opener to kick off the Athletics' three-game weekend series in Milwaukee. Medina stands 0-5 with an 8.19 ERA through 29.2 innings (five starts, one relief appearance) this season. He should not be on active fantasy rosters, no matter the role.
Jun 4, 2023
Hit around by Marlins
Medina (0-5) took the loss Saturday, allowing six runs on six hits and four walks over two innings against the Marlins. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Medina struggled mightily Saturday, setting a season-high in walks while lasting just two innings. However, he didn't allow a home run after giving up 10 across his first five appearances. The rookie has been awful to start the season, owning an 8.19 ERA and 1.9 K/BB through 29.2 innings of work. Considering his inability to limit power and walks and the Athletics' lack of run support, Medina remains firmly out of fantasy consideration, though he will likely continue to receive starts given Oakland's lack of quality arms.
May 28, 2023
Takes loss in long-relief outing
Medina (0-4) allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five over 5.1 innings, taking the loss Sunday versus the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Ken Waldichuk started and pitched the first inning, giving up a solo home run to Yordan Alvarez. The Astros continued their power hitting against Medina, who surrendered three homers that accounted for all five runs on his line in a bulk-relief outing. With four losses in five outings and no fewer than three runs allowed in each of them, Medina has struggled in his first taste of the majors. He has a 6.83 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 24:10 K:BB through 27.2 innings through five appearances (four starts). It's unclear if he'll pitch behind an opener or make a traditional start in his next outing, which is tentatively scheduled for a road matchup against the Marlins over the weekend.
May 28, 2023
Pitching as bulk reliever Sunday
Medina is scheduled to serve as a bulk reliever behind opening pitcher Ken Waldichuk in Sunday's game against the Astros, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Waldichuk has been a member of Oakland's rotation all season, he'll be returning to the mound on only three days' rest Sunday and thus may not be available to cover more than two or three innings before turning the ball over to Medina. With that in mind, Medina is still the Oakland pitcher most likely to factor into any decision, even though his usage as a bulk reliever could limit his pitch count to some degree compared to if he were operating as a traditional starter.
May 24, 2023
Yields two homers in loss
Medina (0-3) allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four over 5.1 innings, taking the loss Tuesday versus the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Medina was cruising until J.P. Crawford and Ty France (wrist) hit back-to-back home runs. The Athletics' offense couldn't respond, sending Medina to his third loss in four starts this season. The right-hander has pitched to a 6.45 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 19:7 K:BB over 22.1 innings. Aside from one bad frame Tuesday, this was an encouraging effort. With Kyle Muller optioned out earlier in the day, Medina's spot in the rotation should be safe. He lines up for a difficult home start versus the Astros this weekend.
May 17, 2023
Delivers quality start
Medina did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks over six innings against the Diamondbacks. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Medina had his best outing as a rookie, but Oakland still couldn't pull out a win. Medina only allowed three hits, but two of them were homers that produced all three of his earned runs. Three starts into his career, the righty has a 6.88 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. He has provided decent strikeout numbers with 15 across 17 innings.
May 14, 2023
Awarded another start
Medina is listed as the Athletics' starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Oakland has yet to confirm whether it will maintain a six-man rotation heading into the upcoming week, but Medina will at least make a second consecutive start after he impressed in his return to the big leagues this past Thursday against the Rangers. While covering six innings, Medina struck out three and allowed three earned runs on five hits and no walks. Considering that Medina owned a 7.43 ERA, 1.98 WHIP and 16:15 K:BB across 13.1 innings at Triple-A Las Vegas, he'll be tough to trust to come through with another quality start Wednesday, despite his respectable showing versus the Rangers.
May 12, 2023
Delivers quality start
Medina (0-2) took the loss Thursday, allowing three runs on five hits over six innings in a 4-0 loss against the Rangers. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Medina was solid in his second-career start. Oakland's offense could not solve Nathan Eovaldi, rendering Medina's start useless. Through two starts he has an 8.18 ERA and 9:3 K:BB. He has been bouncing between Triple-A and the majors over the last few weeks, making two appearances at each level since April 26.
May 11, 2023
Will get start Thursday
Medina will start for the Athletics on Thursday versus the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Previous reporting indicated that Zach Neal would get the ball first, but the A's are going to turn to Medina instead with Neal likely serving as a bulk reliever. They were both called up from Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday afternoon. Neither pitcher carries individual fantasy appeal.
May 11, 2023
Recalled from Triple-A
Oakland recalled Medina from Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old can provide long relief behind Zach Neal in Thursday night's series opener versus the Rangers. Medina was lit up for eight runs -- seven earned -- over five innings in his MLB debut last month against the Angels.
Apr 27, 2023
Optioned to Triple-A
Medina was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas by the Athletics on Thursday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Medina was rocked for seven earned runs over five innings in his major-league debut versus the Angels on Wednesday. The right-hander should get another shot eventually but will rejoin the Vegas rotation for now.
Apr 27, 2023
Will head back to Triple-A
Medina will be optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Medina struggled heavily in his MLB debut against the Angels on Wednesday, allowing seven earned runs over five innings en route to an 11-3 loss. The 23-year-old prospect has made just three starts in Triple-A and will likely need to get more work in the minors before he can return to the major-league squad.
Apr 25, 2023
Officially called up from Triple-A
Oakland recalled Medina from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Medina will be brought up to make a start against the Angels on Wednesday. The right-hander forged a 3.86 ERA with an 11:8 K:BB and 1.39 WHIP over his 9.1 innings with Las Vegas in three appearances. Medina has shown the potential to miss bats in the minors, but he'd be a very risky option for fantasy streamers because of a number of factors.
Apr 24, 2023
Starting Wednesday vs. Angels
Medina will be recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas by the Athletics to start Wednesday's game against the Angels, Hector Gomez of Z101Digital.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Medina was acquired by the Athletics in August in the deal that sent Frankie Montas to the Yankees. The right-hander has posted a 3.86 ERA in 9.1 innings for the Aviators with an 11:8 K:BB with a 1.39 WHIP over three appearances. If things go well he'll have a chance to make more starts for Oakland in 2023, but he may not be stretched out to qualify for a victory chance come Wednesday.
Aug 1, 2022
Traded to Oakland
Medina was traded from the Yankees to the Athletics along with Ken Waldichuk, JP Sears and Cooper Bowman in exchange for Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino, Jack Curry of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Medina has been a prospect of note for years thanks to elite raw stuff. Unfortunately, his command has never been good enough on a consistent basis for him to be seen as a likely starting pitcher. Medina has just one minor-league option year remaining, so he will likely debut next year out of the big-league bullpen. The 23-year-old righty has a 3.38 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 81 strikeouts and 40 walks in 72 innings this year in a repeat of Double-A. If his command improves, Medina could be Oakland's closer of the future.
Jun 17, 2021
Excels in first Double-A start
Medina tossed 5.2 innings for Double-A Somerset on Wednesday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out 10.
ANALYSIS
Medina's final line was impacted by a pair of runners he was responsible for crossing the plate after he left the game, but it was nonetheless an impressive outing for the 22-year-old right-hander in his Double-A debut. After striking out 50 batters in 32.2 frames in High-A ball, he continued racking up whiffs with his 10-strikeout performance Wednesday. One of the keys to his success this season has been improved control; his overall 4.9 BB/9, though not overly impressive, ranks as his best season mark across four minor-league campaigns.
Jun 13, 2021
Moves up to Double-A
The Yankees promoted Medina from High-A Hudson Valley to Double-A Somerset on Sunday, Josh Norris of Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
Medina was one of three Hudson Valley rotation members to receive a call-up to the next rung of the minors, with Ken Waldichuk and Hayden Wesneski also joining him. The 22-year-old Medina is the youngest of the trio and likely rates as the best pitching prospect, thanks to a fastball that routinely hits triple digits to go with an excellent curveball and a plus changeup. He blew away the competition at High-A through his first seven starts, posting a 2.76 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and a 50:19 K:BB in 32.2 innings.
May 22, 2021
Thriving in High-A ball
Medina has registered a 1.45 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 32:9 K:BB across 18.2 innings with High-A Hudson Valley.
ANALYSIS
The 22-year-old punched out 11 batters over 5.2 innings Thursday to pick up his second win of the campaign. One reason for Medina's dominance thus far is improved control, as his walk rate is down to a tolerable 4.5 BB/9. He could ascend quickly through the system and further cement his status as a top pitching prospect if he's able to continue to keep the walks down. Medina has the ability to hit triple digits with his fastball, so the potential for big-time strikeout numbers is undisputable.
Mar 13, 2021
Optioned by Yankees
Medina was optioned to High-A Hudson Valley on Friday.
ANALYSIS
The organization has expressed high optimism for Medina, but he's only 21 years of age and needs more seasoning, so he'll open the campaign in High-A ball. The right-hander made one Grapefruit League appearance this spring, allowing one run on four walks over two-thirds of an inning. Control has been Medina's primary struggle in his short professional career, so he'll need to work that issue out before he's ready to tackle the majors.
Feb 24, 2021
Could debut in 2021
Medina has a chance to be called up at some point during the coming campaign, Max Goodman of Sports Illustrated reports.
ANALYSIS
Medina is only 21 years old and has yet to pitch beyond the High-A level, but the organization is clearly optimistic about his outlook as a big-leaguer. "He's somebody we're very excited about...you never know what can happen. He's somebody that we feel has a bright future and a major-league future," manager Aaron Boone stated Tuesday. Though the young right-hander's upside and strikeout potential are certainly enticing, Medina will need to show vast improvement with his command and control before he's likely to find success in the majors.
Jul 16, 2020
Reassigned to alternate camp
Medina was reassigned to New York's alternate camp site Thursday.
ANALYSIS
This move was expected, as Medina -- who has yet to pitch above High-A -- was never a candidate to pitch for the big-league squad in 2020. Across 20 starts with Low-A Charleston last season, the 21-year-old posted a 6.00 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 115:67 K:BB in 93 innings.
Jun 30, 2020
Included in player pool
Medina will attend summer camp as part of the Yankees' 60-man player pool.
ANALYSIS
Medina is among the top pitching prospects in the organization, making his continued development a priority for the Yankees. The 21-year-old has yet to pitch beyond the High-A level, so it's unlikely he'll see any big-league playing time in 2020.
Apr 11, 2020
Throws heat this spring
Medina struck out five batters in four innings in Grapefruit League action this spring and, according to a major-league scout, hit 96-97 mph with his fastball, Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media reports.
ANALYSIS
Medina also allowed only one run and two walks over his three outings, a promising result in light of his 5.47 ERA and 6.1 BB/9 in the minors last season. According to the unnamed scout, Medina's stuff may play best in a setup or closer role, though the Yankees have plenty of time to decide how to develop the 20-year-old. Given Medina's late-season success in 2019 -- he posted a 1.77 ERA over his final 45.2 innings -- he'll have the opportunity to prove his worth as a starter at High-A Tampa when the campaign gets underway.
Mar 9, 2020
Opening at High-A
Medina was optioned to High-A Tampa on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Medina reached High-A late last season, making just two starts. In 22 total starts between Tampa and Low-A Charleston last season, the 20-year-old struggled to a 5.47 ERA, with his encouraging 27.0 percent strikeout rate largely offset by his 14.9 percent walk rate. Like many young pitchers, he'll need to make strides with his command to allow his exciting stuff to play up to its potential.
