Heads to Mets for 1-yr, $13M
Severino (oblique) agreed to a one-year, $13 million contract with the Mets on Wednesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old right-hander will make the short move to Queens after a rollercoaster eight-year run with the Yankees. He arrived in the Bronx with loads of promise back in 2015 but has battled a range of injuries over the last handful of seasons. It was a high-grade oblique strain that cut short his 2023 season, and he stumbled to a 6.65 ERA in 89.1 innings when healthy. That said, Severino should be back to full health by the beginning of spring training in 2024 and figures to have a spot in the Mets' Opening Day rotation if he gets through camp without any physical complications.

Resumes throwing
Severino (oblique) has progressed to throwing in his rehab process and is feeling good, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
A high-grade oblique strain forced Severino to miss the final month of the season. The 29-year-old free agent posted a 6.65 ERA and 1.65 WHIP through 89.1 frames in 2023, but his progress in rehab has apparently been encouraging enough to draw interest from a handful of teams.

Out with high-grade oblique strain
Severino will miss the remainder of the season after being diagnosed with a high-grade left oblique strain, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino's season, and quite possibly his Yankees career, is over, as the 29-year-old is an impending free agent. He did not have the walk year he envisioned, posting a 6.65 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 79:34 K:BB. Severino served up a career-high 23 home runs over just 89.1 innings of work.
Sep 9, 2023
Placed on injured list
Severino landed on the 15-day injured list with an upper-body injury on his left side Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Severino's test results are not yet been revealed, so he's yet to be officially diagnosed with an oblique strain, but the Yankees don't seem optimistic. He'll technically have time to return to the mound before the end of the year, but there's a very real chance he's already thrown his last pitch in pinstripes given that his contract is up at the end of the year. If his season is indeed over, the 29-year-old righty will finish with a 6.65 ERA and 1.65 WHIP across 19 outings, a far cry from the 3.39 ERA and 1.12 WHIP he'd earned through the end of 2022.
Sep 8, 2023
Will undergo testing on side
Severino will undergo diagnostic testing on his left side Saturday after his early departure from Friday's game against the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Severino appeared to tweak something in his left side/oblique area while pitching in the top of the fifth inning and made an early exit from the start following a brief mound visit. He was charged with two earned runs on four hits and one walk over four innings, striking out five. An oblique strain could spell the end of his Yankees career, as the 29-year-old is scheduled to become a free agent this winter.
Sep 8, 2023
Exits start with injury
Severino was removed from his start Friday versus the Brewers due to an apparent injury, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hoch notes that Severino looked to be experiencing "significant discomfort" in his left side/oblique after giving up a leadoff single to Brice Turang in the top of the fifth inning. The 29-year-old right-hander had surrendered two earned runs on four hits and one walk over four official innings prior to his departure. He struck out five. There should be an update soon from Yankee Stadium.
Sep 3, 2023
Shaky in no-decision
Severino came away with a no-decision Saturday in the Yankees' 5-4 win over the Astros, giving up four runs on six hits and a walk over four innings. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander lived in the zone all evening, tossing 75 of his 104 pitches for strikes, but he only managed nine swinging strikes and got taken deep by Michael Brantley in the second inning and Yainer Diaz in the fourth. Severino had put together a 14.2-inning scoreless streak prior to that Brantley homer, but he hasn't been able to sustain success for more than a couple starts at a time this season -- since the beginning of August, the 29-year-old has a 5.20 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 24:9 K:BB through 27.2 innings. If he stays on turn, Severino's next outing would come at home next weekend against the Brewers.
Aug 28, 2023
Seven scoreless in win
Severino (4-8) earned the win Monday, allowing five hits over seven scoreless innings against the Tigers. He struck out eight without issuing a walk.
ANALYSIS
Severino scattered five hits en route to his second consecutive scoreless outing. The enigmatic 29-year-old struck out a season-high eight while not issuing any free passes for just the second time this year. Severino's back-to-back gems have lowered his season-long ERA to 6.64 after it ballooned to an unsightly 8.06 earlier in the month. He tentatively lines up to face a much tougher Astros offense at Minute Maid Park over the weekend.
Aug 24, 2023
Bounces back Wednesday
Severino (3-8) earned the win over Washington on Wednesday, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out two batters over 6.2 scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
Severino came into the contest struggling so mightily that his role in the rotation was in some question -- he had posted a 14.17 ERA and 2.48 WHIP over 13.1 innings while losing each of his previous four starts. For one game at least, the right-hander turned things around, tying his longest outing of the campaign with 6.2 frames and posting his second scoreless outing. Severino struck out just two batters, but the Yankees (and his fantasy managers) probably won't dwell over that given the positive start overall. It's going to take more than just this outing to declare Severino back to form, but it was certainly a step in the right direction and leaves little doubt that he'll remain in the rotation for now. His next start is tentatively scheduled to come in Detroit early next week.
Aug 16, 2023
Struggles continue Tuesday
Severino (2-8) took the loss Tuesday, coughing up five runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks over four innings as the Yankees fell 5-0 to Atlanta. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
There were signs of progress for the right-hander, who generated 27 called or swinging strikes among his 83 pitches, but Severino still lost his fourth straight start while getting tagged for at least five runs in his third straight outing. He's managed only one quality start in eight trips to the mound since the beginning of July with a ghastly 11.08 ERA, 2.31 WHIP and 29:15 K:BB through 31.2 innings, making the 29-year-old all but unrosterable, but the Yankees lack of healthy alternatives will likely keep him in the rotation. Severino's next start is likely to come at home early next week against the Nationals.
Aug 11, 2023
Will remain in rotation
Severino will start Tuesday against Atlanta, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino has been in danger of losing his rotation spot for multiple weeks now, but the Yankees continue to need him after losing Carlos Rodon (hamstring) and Nestor Cortes (shoulder) to injuries and Domingo German to alcohol abuse treatment. Severino, 29, carries a brutal 8.06 ERA through 63.2 innings this season.
Aug 10, 2023
Woes continue Wednesday
Severino (2-7) took the loss against the White Sox on Wednesday, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk while striking out two batters over two-plus innings.
ANALYSIS
The Yankees moved Severino behind an opener (Ian Hamilton) in an attempt to fix his first-inning struggles, but the adjustment didn't make much of a difference. Severino came on in the second frame and fell behind 3-0 after the fourth batter he faced, Oscar Colas, tagged him for a two-run homer. Severino allowed another run in the third and was pulled after issuing a leadoff walk in the fourth. The right-hander has struggled massively since the start of July, posting an 11.71 ERA and 2.39 WHIP while serving up 10 home runs over 27.2 innings. New York may need to do more than just place Severino behind an opener to help solve the problems that have led to him posting an ugly 8.06 ERA though 14 starts this season.
Aug 9, 2023
Not starting Wednesday
Severino won't start Wednesday's game against the White Sox, but he could be deployed as a primary pitcher out of the bullpen behind Ian Hamilton, who will serve as the Yankees' opener, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Hamilton hasn't covered more than three innings in any of his 31 appearances between the majors and minors in 2023, so he's unlikely to work more than once through the White Sox batting order before exiting the contest. Wednesday had been Severino's turn through the rotation, but because he's been lit up to the tune of a 11.22 ERA and 2.34 WHIP over his last six starts, the Yankees may be eager to try him out in a different role. Assuming Severino ends up serving as the Yankees' main option out of the bullpen Wednesday, he'll be the pitcher most likely to factor into any decision, though his innings count may be more suppressed than usual.
Aug 6, 2023
Uncertainty regarding role
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that he hasn't decided whether Severino will make his next turn through the rotation, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt will pick up starts in the Yankees' first two games of the week versus the White Sox, but no confirmation has been made on a starter for the series finale Wednesday, when Severino's turn in the rotation comes up. Boone said he would wait and see how things played out with the Yankees' pitching staff over the next few days before making a decision on the starter for Wednesday, but Severino could end up sticking in the rotation by default after Carlos Rodon exited Sunday's 9-7 loss to the Astros with hamstring tightness. Rodon will undergo an MRI on Monday, and if he's forced to go on the injured list, the Yankees wouldn't have many starting options on the 40-man roster at their disposal if Severino is moved to the bullpen. Even if Severino maintains his rotation spot this week, fantasy managers won't be able to use him with any degree of confidence. He's gone 1-4 with a 11.22 ERA, 2.34 ERA and 22:12 K:BB in 25.2 innings over his last six starts.
Aug 5, 2023
Struggles continue
Severino (2-6) took the loss Friday, allowing five runs on five hits and three walks over 4 innings in a 7-3 loss to the Astros. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Severino allowed a three-run home run to the Astros' Yainer Diaz and the Yankees were never able to recover. He came into the game with a 7.49 ERA on the season and has now allowed 32 earned runs in 25.2 innings since the start of July. With the Yankees' playoff hopes dwindling by the day, it would be surprising if Severino continues in his role as a starter for much longer.
Aug 2, 2023
Staying in rotation
Severino is the listed starter for the Yankees on Friday against the Astros, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Yankees manager Aaron Boone suggested earlier this week that Severino might be at risk of losing his rotation spot, but the club mostly sat idle at Tuesday's trade deadline and will apparently stick with the 29-year-old right-hander at least a little while longer. He has struggled to a 7.49 ERA, 1.84 WHIP and 50:24 K:BB through 57.2 innings (12 starts) this season.
Jul 31, 2023
Role unclear going forward
Manager Aaron Boone said Monday that "all options are on the table" when asked if the Yankees are committed to giving Severino his next start in the rotation, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
If Severino was going to get the ball this weekend against the Astros, it would have been easy for Boone to confirm that when asked directly, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Severino shift to a relief role, especially if the Yankees can trade for a replacement. Either way, given that Severino has allowed 27 earned runs in 21.2 innings over his last five starts, it would be pretty risky to deploy him this week in fantasy.
Jul 30, 2023
Tagged with nine runs
Severino (2-5) allowed nine runs on 10 hits and two walks over 3.1 innings Sunday, striking out five and taking a loss against the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Baltimore jumped all over Severino on Sunday Night Baseball, plating seven runs in the first inning and two more in the fourth. It's the fourth time in just 12 starts this season that he's given up at least seven runs. Three of those ugly outings came during July, resulting in an outrageous 10.38 ERA for the month. Severino's season mark has jumped to 7.49 through 57.2 frames. His next start is currently projected to be at home against the Astros.
Jul 23, 2023
Notches second win
Severino (2-4) earned the win Sunday, allowing three runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings against the Royals. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Severino's looked better since the All-Star break, allowing four runs over 11.2 innings in his last two starts after surrendering 14 earned runs in his previous two outings. Overall, it's been a shaky campaign for Severino since returning to the Yankees rotation in late May. His ERA now sits at 6.46 with a 1.73 WHIP and 45:22 K:BB through 11 starts (54.1 innings). The 29-year-old right-hander is currently lined up to face the Orioles on the road in his next outing.
Jul 18, 2023
Allows one run Monday
Severino allowed a run on six hits and three walks while striking out three over six innings in a no-decision versus the Angels on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Severino was solid despite putting too many runners on base early on, and the only run he gave up with a Matt Thaiss solo shot in the sixth inning. Prior to the All-Star break, Severino was torched for 16 runs (14 earned) over 6.2 innings across his first two starts in July. The right-hander has struggled to a 6.66 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 40:22 K:BB through 48.2 innings over 10 starts this season after beginning the year on the injured list with a lat strain. He's projected for a favorable home start versus the Royals this weekend, though Severino's place in the rotation could be tenuous if the Yankees opt to upgrade their pitching before the trade deadline.
Jul 7, 2023
Hit hard by Baltimore
Severino (1-4) took the loss Thursday, allowing seven runs on 10 hits and one walk over 2.2 innings against the Orioles. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Thursday's outing was one to forget for Severino, who failed to get out of the third inning for the first time all year and tied his season high in earned runs. After surrendering a leadoff homer to Gunnar Henderson in the first, Severino held the Orioles scoreless until a disastrous third inning where he allowed three doubles before being pulled. Severino has now posted back-to-back nightmare starts in which he's allowed 16 runs over 6.2 innings. Through nine starts (42.2 innings) this season, Severino owns career worsts in ERA (7.38), HR/9 (2.3) and K/9 (7.8).
Jul 2, 2023
Has miserable outing
Severino (1-3) took the loss Saturday, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits and three walks over four innings against St. Louis. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Severino ran into trouble in the bottom of the third, allowing back-to-back singles to open the frame before surrendering a three-run homer to Paul Goldschmidt. But the right-hander's troubles didn't end there as the Cardinals went on to add another two runs in the inning and two more in the fourth. The seven earned runs allowed tied his season high and Severino has now lost three of his last four decisions. He's also walked at least three batters while giving up at least seven hits in three of his last four starts.
Jun 30, 2023
Start vs. Cardinals postponed
Severino's scheduled start against the Cardinals on Friday has been postponed due to inclement weather, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
ANALYSIS
Because of the rain in St. Louis, the Yankees and Cardinals will play a doubleheader Saturday with the first game starting at 11:15 CST. Severino and Matthew Liberatore -- the two scheduled starters for Friday's contest -- will likely pitch in one of the two games of the twin bill instead.
Jun 25, 2023
Blanks Texas for first win
Severino (1-2) picked up the win Saturday, allowing five hits and two walks over six scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory over the Rangers. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Things looked like they might unravel quickly for the right-hander, as he walked two batters with two outs in the first inning, but Jake Bauers threw out Nathaniel Lowe at the plate to end the frame after a Josh Jung single and Severino didn't let another runner get past second base. It was an encouraging outing for the 29-year-old after he's coughed up 19 earned runs in 18.2 innings over his prior four starts, but he still has a big hole to climb out of where his ratios are concerned. Severino will look to build a winning streak in his next start, likely to come next weekend in St. Louis.
Jun 18, 2023
Falls to 0-2
Severino (0-2) yielded four runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks over five innings Sunday, striking out six and taking a loss against Boston.
ANALYSIS
Severino allowed one run through three innings before the Red Sox brought home three runs in the next two frames. After a solid start to his 2023 campaign, the 29-year-old has coughed up 19 earned runs over his last 18.2 innings, driving his season ERA up to 6.30 through six starts. On the bright side, Sunday's outing was the first time he didn't allow a home run since his season debut May 21. Severino's next outing is projected to be at home against the Rangers.
Jun 14, 2023
Tagged for six in no-decision
Severino did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing six runs on seven hits and three walks over 4.2 innings in a 7-6 victory over the Mets. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Severino needed 104 pitches to get through 4.2 innings after allowing four runs over his first two frames. The 29-year-old right-hander has struggled mightily of late, allowing 17 runs through 13.2 innings in his last three starts. Severino is 0-1 with a 6.48 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 22:10 K:BB through his first five starts (25 innings) this season. He'll look to get on track in his next start, tentatively scheduled for Sunday against the Red Sox.
Jun 3, 2023
Roughed up in first inning
Severino (0-1) took the loss Friday, allowing seven runs on nine hits and one walk over four innings against the Dodgers. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Severino's third start was his worst start of the season, as he allowed more home runs Friday than he had allowed runs in his previous two starts combined. He threw a season-high 83 pitches, as he should be stretched out to go deeper in games when he is more effective. His ERA sits at 5.28, but six of the nine runs he has allowed came in a single inning. His next scheduled start is against the White Sox, where he will look to get back on track.
May 28, 2023
Allows one hit across 6.2 innings
Severino did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit and three walks over 6.2 innings against the Padres. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Severino turned in another strong performance Saturday, allowing just one hit over 6.2 innings. However, the one hit was a solo homer off the bat of Fernando Tatis in the fourth. Though it was definitely encouraging to see Severino reach into the seventh inning, he was still pulled after only 82 pitches after going 75 in his first start of 2023. Considering Severino has only managed to pitch 120.0 innings combined over the last three years, expect the Yankees to continue to hold him on a pitch count for his next couple of starts. Regardless, fantasy managers who stashed Severino have already had the investment pay off, with Severino allowing 2 earned runs with 10 strikeouts over 11.1 innings pitched so far.
May 21, 2023
Solid in season debut
Severino did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over 4.2 innings in a 4-1 victory over the Reds. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Severino surrendered a run in the first inning Sunday before holding the Reds to three hits over his final 3.2 frames. Overall, it was an encouraging debut for Severino, who was pulled after throwing 75 pitches. The Yankees will likely be careful with Severino's pitch counts after he missed the start of the season with a lat injury. He's currently lined up to face the Padres at home in his next outing.
May 21, 2023
Reinstated from IL
Severino (lat) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list ahead of Sunday's start against the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Severino will make his season debut for the Yankees on Sunday after he completed two rehab starts with Double-A Somerset. Over those contests, the right-hander surrendered three runs on eight hits while striking out six batters over 6.2 innings. Considering the fact that he didn't go past 3.1 frames in either start, Severino will likely be limited in his first major-league outing of 2023. Moving forward, Severino produced a 3.18 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with 112 strikeouts over 102 innings in 19 starts last year and he could be a valuable fantasy asset once again this season.
May 17, 2023
Making season debut Sunday
Severino (lat) will make his season debut for the Yankees on Sunday in Cincinnati, Erik Boland of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino went only 3.1 innings in each of his two rehab starts, maxing out at 58 pitches in his last outing Tuesday with Double-A Somerset. That means he'll surely be on a relatively limited pitch count in his season debut, making him a fairly iffy fantasy option at Great American Ball Park. Still, the Yankees and fantasy managers will be happy to get Severino back hopefully for the long haul if he can manage to avoid more injuries.
May 16, 2023
Will throw up to 60 pitches Tuesday
Severino (lat) will throw up to 60 pitches for Double-A Somerset on Tuesday in a rehab start, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino threw 49 pitches in his rehab start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last Wednesday, and he'll get a chance to go a little deeper in this outing. If things go well for Severino on Tuesday, his next start could be made over the weekend against the Reds, but the team will evaluate how things go before making that decision. Assuming there's no setbacks, Severino should be a part of the Yankees' rotation by the end of May.
May 15, 2023
Could make season debut Sunday
Severino (lat) may be activated from the IL in time to start Sunday in Cincinnati, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino threw 49 pitches in his first rehab appearance with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last Wednesday, and he's slated to make his next start with the minor-league club Tuesday. The right-hander will likely increase his pitch count to some extent in that outing, and if the appearance goes well, he could be given the go-ahead to make his 2023 MLB debut Sunday against the Reds. Severino would almost certainly have his workload monitored under that scenario, as he didn't see any sort of game action during the entire month of April as he worked his way back from a low-grade lat strain that he suffered near the end of spring training.
May 11, 2023
Tosses 49 pitches in rehab start
Severino (lat) completed 3.1 innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk while striking out three batters.
ANALYSIS
In Severino's first game action this season, he threw 29 of 49 pitches for a strike and gave up just one run on a third-inning solo homer. The right-hander is making his way back from a lat strain that occurred near the end of spring training. Per Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, Severino will make another rehab start Tuesday. It's possible that he could join the Yankees rotation after that, though manager Aaron Boone hasn't yet committed to that scenario.
May 9, 2023
Rehab start Wednesday
Severino (lat) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino had been hoping to push it to Thursday so he wouldn't have to drive to Scranton on Tuesday for an early-morning start Wednesday, but the Yankees appear to have overruled him. The right-hander is aiming to make two rehab starts before rejoining the rotation, although it's possible the club will ask him to make more than that.
May 7, 2023
Rehab start likely coming Wednesday
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Severino (lat) is expected to make a rehab start at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
For his part, Severino said he prefers to make his first rehab start Thursday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, since Wednesday's contest has an early start time that would require him to stay overnight in Pennsylvania on Tuesday. The Yankees could push Severino back a day to accommodate his wishes, but whether he takes the hill Wednesday or Thursday, it shouldn't ultimately have a dramatic effect on his timeline for making his 2023 MLB debut. Severino threw a three-inning, 40-pitch simulated game this past Friday in Tampa and experienced no ill effects, and he's expected to make at least two rehab starts before being activated from the 15-day injured list.
May 6, 2023
Simulated game goes well
Severino (lat) felt good after throwing a simulated game Friday and will soon make a rehab appearance for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Aaron Boone said at the start of May that Severino was two or three weeks from returning from the lat strain which has kept him out all season. While a planned rehab start became a simulated game instead, it doesn't appear as though he's significantly behind that schedule. Exactly how many rehab outings he needs will determine whether or not he's able to hit Boone's stated timeline.
May 3, 2023
Live BP instead of rehab
Severino (lat) will throw a live batting practice session Friday instead of beginning a rehab assignment, Jack Curry of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The plan had been for Severino to begin a rehab assignment with High-A Tampa on Thursday, but the Yankees have decided they'd rather the pitcher work in a more controlled environment. If everything goes well Friday, he'll then begin a rehab assignment next week. Severino is expected back in mid- to late-May and this news shouldn't change that timetable.
May 3, 2023
Starting rehab assignment
Severino (lat) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Tampa on Thursday, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday that he hoped to get Severino back in 2-3 weeks, so expect the right-hander to make at least two and possible three rehab starts. He's been on the shelf all season with a strained right lat muscle.
May 1, 2023
Hopes to return in 2-3 weeks
The hope is that Severino (lat) will rejoin the Yankees' rotation within the next 2-3 weeks, manager Aaron Boone said in an interview on the Talkin' Yanks podcast Monday.
ANALYSIS
Severino will begin a rehab assignment this week either Wednesday or Thursday with High-A Tampa. Based on Boone's timetable, it sounds like the right-hander is expected to make 2-3 rehab starts before rejoining the big club, if all goes well. Severino has been out all season with a strained right lat.
Apr 30, 2023
Rehab beginning this week
Severino (lat) will begin a rehab assignment either Wednesday or Thursday for High-A Tampa, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino will likely need to make multiple rehab starts before returning to the Yankees rotation, as he's missed all of the 2023 campaign while he recovers from his lat strain. If everything goes right in his minor-league outings, the right-hander should be a member of the Yankees' rotation around the middle of May.
Apr 28, 2023
Throws 40 pitches in live session
Severino (lat) threw 40 pitches over three up and downs Friday in a live session before the Yankees' game against the Rangers, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino continues to make strong progress from the lat strain, and he's able to get the three "ups" after participating in two sessions Monday. The right-hander is trending towards a rehab assignment, but nothing has been scheduled yet. It's likely Severino rejoins the Yankees at this point in the middle of May if there are no setbacks.
Apr 24, 2023
Throwing again Friday
Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters that Severino (lat) threw two up and downs for the Yankees on Monday and will throw again Friday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino continues to make strong progress from the lat strain that has sidelined him for the first three-plus weeks of the regular season. The right-hander will make another throwing appearance over the weekend, and it sounds like if things go right he'll have a chance to begin a rehab assignment. At this point it seems likely that Severino will be able to make starts for the Yankees in the middle of May if there are no setbacks in his rehab.
Apr 20, 2023
Slated for more live BP
Severino (lat) is scheduled to throw one more live batting practice session before possibly starting a rehab assignment, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino had a successful split bullpen Thursday, throwing 15 pitches in the bullpen and another 20 in live batting practice. He's now headed to the Yankees' spring training complex to continue his rehab and could conceivably be ready for a rehab assignment at some point next week.
Apr 18, 2023
Scheduled for live BP
Severino (lat) will throw live batting practice Thursday, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
It will be his first time facing hitters since he was diagnosed with a lat strain in late March. A rehab assignment for Severino should be just around the corner. The right-hander figures to need multiple rehab starts before rejoining the Yankees' rotation but could conceivably be back by early May.
Apr 16, 2023
Throws another bullpen session
Severino (lat) completed a bullpen session Sunday with no issues, Erik Boland of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino recently progressed to mound work and has now thrown three bullpen sessions in the past week. The right-hander should soon progress to facing live hitters, which should be the final step before heading on a rehab assignment.
Apr 13, 2023
Throws bullpen session
Severino (lat) threw a bullpen session Thursday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Aaron Boone said Severino's session went well Thursday. The next step for the 29-year-old pitcher will likely come Monday with another bullpen session and live batting practice.

Slated for more mound work
Severino (lat) will throw another bullpen session Thursday, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
He was cleared for more mound work after recovering from Monday's bullpen session with no issues. If Thursday's session goes off without a hitch, Severino could face hitters after that. The right-hander will need at least one rehab start before being activated and it's not clear when that might come.
Apr 10, 2023
Throws bullpen session
Severino (lat) had a successful 22-pitch bullpen session Monday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino was able to throw all of his pitches, including a splitter which he's been toying around with. Whether he makes the splitter part of his regular repertoire remains to be seen. Severino is working his way back from a low-grade lat strain and wouldn't appear far off from a rehab assignment.
Apr 10, 2023
Bullpen moved to Monday
Severino (lat) had his scheduled bullpen session moved from Sunday to Monday, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino was originally scheduled to throw off the mound Sunday, but the move to Monday doesn't appear to be due to any sort of setback. Manager Aaron Boone indicated that Severino's "workload was pretty big" when he last threw April 6, per MLB.com, which likely explains the decision to push him back a day. If all goes well in his continued recovery from a right lat strain, Severino could make his 2023 debut in late April or early May.
Apr 7, 2023
Could throw off mound Sunday
Severino (lat) could throw a bullpen session Sunday, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino expanded his flat-ground throwing to 120 feet Thursday and might progress to the mound next. The right-hander is trending well as he works his way back from a low-grade lat strain but needs to jump through some more hoops before a potential return date can be zeroed in upon.
Apr 5, 2023
Throwing from 90 feet
Severino (lat) has built up his throwing progression to 90 feet and could throw a bullpen in Baltimore this weekend, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
It's the fourth day of throwing for Severino as he continues to make progress from the low-grade lat strain that has sidelined him since the end of March. He'll likely need to throw a few bullpen sessions first, but the next step could be a rehab assignment in the minors if those go well. Severino is expected to miss a total of 3-to-4 starts and without setback could be back with the Yankees as a member of the rotation before April comes to a conclusion.
Apr 1, 2023
Building back up
Severino (lat) threw Friday and Saturday without issues, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino is still limited to light throwing, but it's a positive that he's already begun throwing in some capacity less than a week after suffering a low-grade lat strain. He hopes to only miss three or four starts, and while the Yankees have yet to confirm that timeline, the fact that he's already throwing seemingly suggests he has a chance.
Mar 30, 2023
Moves to IL
The Yankees placed Severino (lat) on the 15-day injured list Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Severino was diagnosed with a low-grade right lat strain last weekend and later said he expects to miss only three to four starts to begin the season, but the Yankees haven't confirmed any official timeline for the 29-year-old. He's one of three rotation members opening the season on the IL, as the Yankees also deactivated Frankie Montas (shoulder) and Carlos Rodon (forearm) on Thursday.
Mar 26, 2023
Could miss 3-4 starts
Severino (lat) said Sunday he'll resume throwing when pain free and could miss as few as three or four starts to open the season, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old's initial shutdown period is expected to be about a week, after which it should become clearer whether or not he'll require a lengthier absence. Severino dealt with a similar injury last year that sidelined him for two months, but the right-hander noted that the current injury isn't in the same location as the previous one.
Mar 25, 2023
Dealing with low-grade lat strain
Severino is dealing with a law-grade lat strain, placing his first start of the season in jeopardy, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The Yankees are hopeful that the injury won't become a long-term problem, but its timing means that Severino is very likely to hit the injured list to open the year. Per Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, Severino isn't expected to throw for at least five-to-seven days, so it may take some time to know just how long he's likely to be out. The righty also dealt with a lat strain last season, which kept him out from mid-July through late September despite originally carrying the same "low-grade" descriptor. Jhony Brito could step into the rotation in his place, with Clarke Schmidt and Domingo German already earning jobs due to injuries to Carlos Rodon (forearm) and Frankie Montas (shoulder).

Won't make final spring start
Severino has been scratched from his scheduled Grapefruit League start Sunday, but the reason has not yet been disclosed, Max Goodman of NJ Advance Media reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino has struggled at times this spring, giving up 15 earned runs and six homers across 15 innings. However, he's stated that he feels healthy and has struck out 15 batters -- including nine in four innings in his most recent outing -- so it's unclear if he's battling an injury. Severino has dealt with various arm issues over the past several seasons, so there's reason for New York to be cautious if he's feeling any sort of discomfort, but the team has not yet discussed the decision to pull him from what was scheduled to be his final appearance of the spring. As such, there's no indication yet as to whether Severino will need to miss any starts to begin the campaign.
Mar 23, 2023
Fans nine in latest start
Severino tossed four innings in a Grapefruit League game against Detroit on Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out nine batters.
ANALYSIS
Severino gave up another long ball -- his sixth in 15 spring frames -- in the outing, but he also racked up nine punchouts. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Severino had the "best breaking ball and slider he's had all spring," per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, so the right-hander may be close to ready for the regular season. Severino is expected to work as New York's fourth starter during the coming campaign.
Mar 11, 2023
Serves up two more homers
Severino tossed four innings against Detroit in a Grapefruit League game Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and no walks while striking out three batters.
ANALYSIS
Both runs against Severino came via the long ball, as Eric Haase tagged him for a solo shot in the second inning and Kerry Carpenter hit another solo blast in the third. Severino has now given up five home runs and nine runs over 8.2 innings this spring, though he's also posted a solid 10:2 K:BB. The right-hander was able to stretch out to 54 pitches Friday and provided a positive perspective on the outing, saying, "I feel healthy out there," per Dick Scanlon of MLB.com. After being limited to just seven appearances between 2019 and 2021, Severino started 19 games for New York last season, and he heads into the 2023 campaign expected to carry few, if any, restrictions.
Feb 28, 2023
Lit up in spring debut
Severino pitched two-plus innings in a Grapefruit League game against Detroit on Monday, allowing four runs on three hits and one walk while striking out one batter.
ANALYSIS
Severino got tagged for three runs in the first inning, two of which came on an Eric Haase home run. He then pitched a 1-2-3 second frame before walking Akil Baddoo to start the third, and Severino was charged with another run when Baddoo came around to score following the hurler's exit. It was far from an inspiring outing for Severino, though it would be unwise to read too much into a poor outing at the start of spring training. On a positive note, the fact that the right-hander was able to throw 45 pitches (30 of which were strikes) this early in the exhibition slate suggests that he is fully healthy entering 2023 after being limited by injuries in each of his previous four campaigns.
Feb 19, 2023
Praised for offseason conditioning
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Saturday that Severino is already in "elite shape" at the start of camp, James O'Connell of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino's health remains a big question mark for the Yankees, as the right-hander has pitched in only 26 games since 2018. He was excellent in the 19 regular-season starts he made last season, posting a 3.18 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 112:30 K:BB over 102 innings, but a lat injury cost him two months of the campaign. However, he's now further removed from his 2020 Tommy John surgery and should be able to pitch with few (if any) restrictions this season, assuming he stays healthy. Fantasy managers can't ignore Severino's lengthy injury history when deciding where to draft him, but given his electric arsenal and past successes, it's certainly feasible for him to rank as a top-15 starting pitcher by season's end.
Nov 4, 2022
Yankees picking up option
GM Brian Cashman said Friday the Yankees will exercise Severino's $15 million club option for 2023, Jack Curry of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino had covered only 18 innings from 2019 to 2021 due to Tommy John surgery, but he returned to New York's rotation last season and posted a 3.18 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 112:30 K:BB across 102 innings (19 starts). The right-hander missed two months with a lat injury but was reliable when healthy, so it's not a major surprise to see the Yankees picking up the option.
Oct 21, 2022
Takes loss in Game 2
Severino tossed 5.1 innings and took the loss Thursday during Game 2 of the ALCS, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six.
ANALYSIS
A devastating three-run homer by Alex Bregman with two outs in the third was enough for the Astros to win Game 2 in Houston. Severino was able to battle the tough Houston lineup all night, but the one mistake to Bregman put a damper on his performance. He managed to work into the sixth but was pulled for Jonathan Loaisiga after a one-out single by Kyle Tucker. The 28-year-old has now surrendered six runs in 11 innings during the postseason while striking out 12.
Oct 3, 2022
Fires seven no-hit innings
Severino (7-3) got the win after he tossed seven no-hit innings, allowing one walk while striking out seven batters in Monday's win over the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Severino was in full command Monday, keeping the Rangers out of the hit column for seven frames. The only baserunner he allowed in the contest was a third-inning walk to Josh Smith. Severino has now produced a 1.69 ERA and 0.63 WHIP with 17 strikeouts over 17 innings in three starts since returning from the 60-day injured list Sept. 21. If he makes another start this season, it will come in the playoffs.
Sep 27, 2022
Early exit in no-decision
Severino didn't factor into the decision in Monday's 3-2 extra-inning loss to the Blue Jays, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander ran up his pitch count and left the game after 76 pitches (49 strikes) in his second start since coming off the IL. Severino's workload was encouraging, even if his efficiency wasn't, and he figures to be fully stretched out for his final start of the regular season this weekend against the Orioles. Since returning to action, Severino has a 3.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 10:4 K:BB through nine innings.
Sep 21, 2022
Five innings in win
Severino (6-3) earned the win Wednesday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk over five innings with six strikeouts against the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Severino looked good in his return from the injured list as had little trouble with the Pittsburgh lineup. He needed just 64 pitches to hold the opposition to three baserunners through five innings. The Yankees were up 6-1 when manager Aaron Boone took Severino out of the game, so it is possible they would have let him go longer if the game were more competitive. He is tentatively scheduled to face off against Toronto next week.
Sep 21, 2022
Activated prior to start
Severino (lat) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list ahead of Wednesday's start against the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Severino sustained a right lat strain in mid-July but recently made three minor-league starts during a rehab assignment and posted a 3.48 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in 10.1 innings. The right-hander tossed just 57 pitches in 4.1 innings during his most recent rehab start, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him on a pitch count Wednesday.
Sep 19, 2022
Returning from IL on Wednesday
Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed over the weekend that Severino (lat) will return from the 60-day injured list to start Wednesday's home game against the Pirates, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino, who has been on the IL since mid-July with a right lat strain, will get the green light to rejoin the rotation following a three-start rehab assignment. In his most recent outing Thursday at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Severino struck out six over 4.1 innings while allowing two runs on four hits and one walk. The 28-year-old tossed 57 pitches in that rehab start, so the Yankees could keep him around the 70-to-80-pitch range when he steps back into the big-league rotation this week. Domingo German worked in relief in his most recent appearance Friday against the Brewers and is expected to stay in the bullpen to clear a spot in the rotation for Severino.
Sep 10, 2022
Next rehab start coming Thursday
Severino (lat) will make another rehab start Thursday, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino tossed 45 pitches during a rehab appearance at Double-A Somerset on Wednesday, and he'll have another minor-league outing late next week. Assuming he feels good afterward, the Yankees hope that Severino will be activated Sept. 21, when the team takes on the Pirates at home.
Sep 10, 2022
Could require another rehab start
Severino (lat) said Saturday that he could require another rehab start prior to rejoining the Yankees, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino has been effective over two outings at Double-A Somerset, posting a 3.00 ERA and 0.83 WHIP in six innings. While he recently expressed optimism that he'd be activated sometime this week, he could ultimately require at least one more minor-league appearance. However, the team will monitor him in the coming days to determine the next steps in his recovery. The right-hander threw just 45 pitches during his most recent outing, so another rehab appearance would likely allow him to increase his pitch count prior to returning from the injured list.
Sep 9, 2022
Could return next week
Severino (lat) is eligible to return from the injured list Sunday and could be activated for the Yankees' two-game series against Boston that begins Sept. 13, per MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
Severino made his second rehab start with Double-A Somerset on Wednesday, pitching four innings and allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts over four innings. The right-hander threw 45 pitches (35 for strikes) and touched 99 mph on the radar gun, per Dom Amore of the Hartford Courant. General manager Brian Cashman has indicated the goal of having Severino get in five big-league starts before the postseason, and having him activated next week would fit in with that timeframe.
Sep 5, 2022
Next rehab start coming Wednesday
Severino (lat) is scheduled to make his next rehab start Wednesday with Double-A Somerset, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino was cleared to begin a rehab assignment Thursday at Single-A Tampa and looked sharp over two scoreless innings, striking out three while allowing one hit and no walks. According to Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record, the Yankees are anticipating that Severino will be ready to rejoin the big-league rotation following Wednesday's rehab start, though he could be capped around 70 pitches in his first outing back from the 60-day injured list. Unless the Yankees elect to expand their rotation to six men, Severino's potential return from the IL next week would likely result in Domingo German moving to the bullpen.
Sep 3, 2022
Looks good in rehab outing
Severino (lat) tossed two scoreless innings in a rehab appearance with Single-A Tampa on Friday, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out three batters.
ANALYSIS
This was Severino's first game action since he completed two innings for the Yankees against Cincinnati on July 13. The right-hander threw 16 of 22 pitches for strikes while dealing with rainy weather that ultimately caused the game to be suspended. Severino will need to build up to higher pitch count before he's able to return to the Yankees, but he's expected to be back with the big club as soon as mid-September.
Aug 29, 2022
Poised for first rehab start Friday
Severino (lat) is expected to make his first minor-league rehab start Friday, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino was able to throw a pair of live batting practice sessions last week with no renewed discomfort in his strained right lat, so he should be ready for game action Friday if he makes it through a bullpen session unscathed in the next couple of days. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has said that he plans on having Severino make about five starts before the postseason, so the right-hander looks like he's on track to return from the 60-day injured list around the time he's first eligible for activation in mid-September.
Aug 23, 2022
Throws 25-pitch live session
Severino (lat) threw approximately 25 pitches Tuesday while facing rehabbing teammate Giancarlo Stanton (Achilles) in a live batting practice session, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
According to Rivera, Severino's fastball sat around 95-to-97 miles per hour during the throwing session, right around his season-long average. The Yankees moved Severino to the 60-day injured list earlier this month after he exited his July 13 start with a low-grade lat strain, but the right-hander already looks like he's well on his way to being ready to go when first eligible in the middle of September. Severino could soon be cleared to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment, where he'll look to build up his pitch count and presumably reclaim his spot in the Yankees' rotation from Domingo German.
Aug 21, 2022
Tosses another bullpen
Severino tossed 25 pitches in a bullpen session Saturday, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The BP was the second in as many days for Severino -- he threw 30 pitches in the previous session Friday. The right-hander is reportedly recovering well, but he's not eligible to come off the injured list until Sept. 12, which is an off day for the Yankees. Severino's next step is to throw a live batting practice session, during which he will reportedly face rehabbing slugger Giancarlo Stanton, on Tuesday, per Marakovits.
Aug 19, 2022
Live BP on tap
Severino (lat) is expected to throw live BP on Tuesday, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Monday, marking the first time he's thrown off a mound since July 14. He'll be cleared to face hitters early next week, and he'll likely be in consideration to begin a rehab assignment shortly after. The right-hander isn't eligible to return from the injured list until mid-September, but he certainly appears to be trending in the right direction.
Aug 17, 2022
Tosses bullpen session Monday
Severino (lat) threw 25 pitches in a bullpen session Monday and indicated that it went well, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
This was Severino's first bullpen session since he landed on the injured list July 14, and the hurler said afterward that it was the best he's felt all year. Per MLB.com, the right-hander is expected to throw a few more side sessions before facing live hitters. Severino isn't eligible to come off the 60-day IL until Sept. 13, and the hope is that he'll be able to make a handful of starts after his activation in order to ramp up for the postseason.
Aug 1, 2022
Sent to 60-day injured list
Severino (lat) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Monday.
ANALYSIS
Severino began a throwing program Monday, but with him moving to the longer of the two injured lists, he will not be eligible to return to action until Sept. 13.
Jul 31, 2022
Ready for throwing program
Severino (lat) will begin a throwing program Monday, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
According to Marakovits, Severino said the pain and soreness in his strained right lat began to subside about four or five days after he was placed on the injured list July 14, but the Yankees still kept him shut down from activity for an additional two weeks. The right-hander will be eased into his throwing program by playing catch off flat ground from 60 feet Monday, and he should gradually increase his throwing distance by the end of the week. The Yankees likely won't have a precise timeline for Severino's return from the IL until he faces hitters again, but fantasy managers probably shouldn't bank on him being activated before mid-August.
Jul 29, 2022
Could resume throwing Monday
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Friday that Severino (lat) may be able to start throwing Monday, Max Goodman of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino has been on a planned two-week shutdown since he went on the injured list July 14, so he would be in the range of that timeframe if he is able to throw Monday. Boone suggested that the right-hander's return to a throwing program is contingent on the next few days going well for him, so it's not yet set in stone. Severino will likely need at least a week to ramp up once he starts throwing before he's able to return to the Yankees' rotation.
Jul 16, 2022
Facing two-week shutdown
Severino (lat) isn't expected to throw for two weeks, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino landed on the injured list with a low-grade right lat strain Thursday, and he'll presumably require more than the minimum of 15 days on the shelf since he'll need time to build back up following his shutdown. A better timetable for his return will likely come into focus once he's able to begin a throwing program.
Jul 14, 2022
Lands on injured list
Severino was placed on the 15-day injured list with a low-grade right lat strain Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Severino exited Wednesday's start against the Reds due to shoulder tightness and underwent an MRI on Thursday. The right-hander missed most of the 2019 season with a lat strain, but his current injury is being classified as a low-grade issue. The right-hander will still be sidelined until at least July 29, and it's not yet clear when the Yankees expect him to return.
Jul 13, 2022
Shoulder tightness causes exit
Severino was diagnosed with right shoulder tightness after being removed from Wednesday's start against the Reds, and he'll undergo an MRI on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old exited prior to the third inning of Wednesday's contest after tossing a couple warmup pitches. Severino allowed four runs over two innings -- including three straight home runs -- prior to leaving the game, but the only real concern is regarding the shoulder injury.
Jul 13, 2022
Leaves with apparent injury
Severino was removed from Wednesday's start against the Reds with an apparent injury, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino surrendered back-to-back-to-back home runs during the second inning, and he was lifted before the third frame after throwing a couple warmup pitches. The specifics of the situation remain unclear, but the Yankees figures to update his status in the near future.
Jul 7, 2022
Shuts out opponent in win
Severino (5-3) earned the win against the Pirates on Wednesday, allowing no runs on four hits while striking out three and walking none across six innings.
ANALYSIS
Severino was lights-out, throwing 58 of 88 pitches for strikes across six frames. He limited the Pirates offense to just four hits. It was Severino's third quality start in a row, but his first game without allowing a run since June 4. The righty had back-to-back losses in his previous two games (both against the Astros), but picked up a dominant win Wednesday. He'll take a 3.11 ERA into his next outing.
Jul 1, 2022
Tough-luck loss
Severino (4-3) allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four across six innings to take the loss Thursday against the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Severino has shown strikeout stuff all season -- he has 91 punchouts across 78 innings on the season -- but he induced only six swinging strikes across 87 pitches Thursday. Despite seemingly lacking his best stuff, Severino still managed to limit one of the better lineups in the league, with the only runs against him coming on a two-run double by Alex Bregman in the third inning. Severino also managed to work at least six innings for the seventh time in his last eight starts. Overall, he has a 3.35 ERA and a 91:23 K:BB across 78 innings on the season.
Jun 25, 2022
Takes loss despite quality start
Severino (4-2) was charged with the loss Friday against the Astros after giving up three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks across six innings.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander kept Houston in check through five innings, but he returned for the sixth and served up a three-run homer to Kyle Tucker. It was still a solid start for Severino, though he continues to be hurt by the long ball, as he's surrendered 11 through 13 starts. He has a 3.38 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 87:21 K:BB across 72 frames and tentatively lines up to pitch versus the A's on Wednesday.
Jun 19, 2022
Coughs up five runs
Severino yielded five runs on three hits and four walks over five innings in Sunday's loss to Toronto. He struck out nine and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Severino was tagged early by Vladimir Guerrero's two-run shot in the first inning. He settled in to throw a few scoreless frames before George Springer hit a solo homer in the fifth. Severino was then charged with two more runs in the sixth while Miguel Castro was on the mound. It was the first time this season he issued more than two walks and the first time he allowed more than four runs in a start this season. The 28-year-old will carry a 3.27 ERA into his projected home start against Houston next week.
Jun 17, 2022
Starting Sunday
Severino will pitch Sunday in Toronto, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Assuming Severino still feels OK physically, he will make a start this week despite being a late scratch Thursday with an illness. He last pitched June 10 and has a 1.67 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 40:6 K:BB in 32.1 innings over his last five starts.
Jun 16, 2022
Reinstated from COVID-19 IL
Severino (illness) was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Thursday.
ANALYSIS
The Yankees announced Thursday that Severino had tested negative for COVID-19 and would travel with the team during the upcoming road trip to Toronto, so his activation doesn't come as a significant surprise. The right-hander was initially scheduled to start Thursday's game against the Rays before being scratched, but the team hasn't yet revealed whether he'll start during the three-game series against the Blue Jays. Regardless of whether Severino takes the mound over the weekend, he should at least be able to make his next turn through the rotation.
Jun 16, 2022
Slated to travel with team
Severino (illness) has continued to test negative for COVID-19 and will travel with the Yankees during their upcoming road trip to Toronto, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino was scratched from his scheduled start Thursday against the Rays and placed on the COVID-19 injured list since he was experiencing symptoms. However, he's feeling better following the win over Tampa Bay and will make the trip to Toronto. It's not yet clear whether Severino will be an option to start during the three-game series against the Blue Jays, but he seems to be trending toward a relatively brief absence.
Jun 16, 2022
No positive test yet
Severino, who was placed on the COVID-19 injured list rather than make his scheduled start Thursday, has not tested positive but is experiencing symptoms, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
He began experiencing fevers and chills Wednesday night but Severino is reportedly doing better Thursday. It's unclear if he's tested negative or if he just hadn't been tested at the time of Adler's report. It seems possible that Severino may be able make his start the next time through the rotation. Clarke Schmidt is starting a bullpen game Thursday.
Jun 16, 2022
Late scratch Thursday
Severino was placed on the COVID-19 injured list shortly before Thursday's scheduled start against the Rays, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
This news comes less than four hours before first pitch, and it's unclear how long Severino will be sidelined. Clarke Schmidt will get the start in what should amount to a bullpen game for the Yankees.
Jun 11, 2022
Strikes out 10 against Cubs
Severino allowed a run on seven hits and a walk while striking out 10 in six innings during Friday's win over the Cubs. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Severino matched his season-high strikeout total during Friday's win, and he posted his fourth quality start in his last five outings. The right-hander threw 70 of 103 pitches for strikes, and the lone run he gave up came via a solo homer to Jason Heyward in the top of the fifth inning. However, Severino didn't get much run support from the Yankees' offense and was forced to settle for his second no-decision in his last four appearances. He projects to make his next start at home against the Rays on Thursday.
Jun 4, 2022
Dominates Tigers
Severino (4-1) pitched seven scoreless, one-hit innings Saturday against the Tigers. He struck out 10, walked one and picked up the win.
ANALYSIS
He was devastating with his slider, which generated whiffs on eight of 11 swings against (73%). Severino was topping out at 99 mph with his fastball and sitting 96.4 mph. He has 38 strikeouts in 31 innings over his last five starts and his season ERA is down to 2.95. Severino lines up for a home start against the Cubs next weekend.
May 29, 2022
Strikes out eight in loss
Severino (3-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on two hits and two walks while striking out eight in 6.1 innings of a 4-2 loss Sunday in Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
Through six innings, Severino allowed only two Rays to reach base, both on solo homers. In the seventh, the righty walked the first two batters before striking out Manuel Margot and being replaced. Both runners would come around to score as reliever Ron Marinaccio struggled with command. The 103 pitches by Severino were a season-high and it was the third consecutive start where he pitched at least six innings. Through two months, the 28-year-old is putting up numbers very similar to his All-Star campaigns of 2017 and 2018. His next start will likely be next weekend against Detroit.
May 23, 2022
Seven scoreless in no-decision
Severino struck out five in seven shutout innings while allowing eight hits and hitting two batters in a 5-0 loss Sunday against the White Sox. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Despite allowing 10 baserunners, Severino held the White Sox scoreless by getting out of a number of jams, including loading the bases with no outs in the fifth. It was his longest outing since 2018 and the fourth consecutive start where he's thrown more than 90 pitches. In May, he's allowed three earned runs or fewer in each start and has compiled a 2.78 ERA with a 24:5 K:BB in 22.2 innings. He'll likely make one more start before the end of the month, this weekend in Tampa Bay.

Dominant versus Orioles
Severino (3-0) earned the win Monday after tossing six innings, surrendering one run on one hit and two walks while striking out seven against the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
The only blemish on Severino's line came in the bottom of the fourth frame when Anthony Santander took him deep for a solo shot. He registered his first quality start of the season and has now won both times he's taken the mound against Baltimore this year. After registering 12 strikeouts over 16 innings his prior three starts, Severino now has 15 punchouts across 10.2 frames in his last two outings. Overall, the 28-year-old now owns a 3.63 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with 38 strikeouts over 34.2 innings in 2022.
May 11, 2022
Escapes with no-decision Tuesday
Severino didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 6-5 win over the Blue Jays, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Things looked bad for the right-hander when Toronto grabbed a 3-0 lead by the top of the second inning, but Severino was able to settle down and keep the game close before exiting after 97 pitches (61 strikes). The eight whiffs were a season high for the 28-year-old, but he's worked past the fifth inning only once in six starts and is still looking for his first quality start of the campaign. Severino will carry a 4.08 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 31:9 K:BB through 28.2 frames into his next outing.
May 1, 2022
Coughs up four runs
Severino yielded four runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk over five innings in Sunday's win over the Royals. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Severino began the game with a pair of scoreless innings before Michael Taylor's leadoff home run to begin the third. The Royals would plate three runs in the inning followed by another in the fourth. Severino is still 2-0 on the year despite allowing eight runs (seven earned) over his last two outings. He'll carry a 3.75 ERA into his projected home outing next weekend against the Rangers.
Apr 27, 2022
Starts strong in win
Severino (2-0) earned the win after striking out five in six innings while allowing four runs on three hits and two walks in a 12-8 victory Tuesday over Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
Severino efficiently retired the first 14 batters he faced and didn't allow a hit through the first five innings, needing just 62 pitches. After retiring the first batter in the sixth, he allowed a single, a walk and a three-run homer to cut the Yankees' lead in half. Following a leadoff double in the seventh, he was replaced. It was the first time since 2018 that he pitched six innings in a game. The Yankees have won all four of Severino's starts this year as he's compiled a 3.32 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 19 innings.
Apr 21, 2022
Strikes out three in no-decision
Severino did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing one run on seven hits and two walks while striking out three over five innings against the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
The three strikeouts and nine baserunners don't look great, but Severino had 11 swinging strikes on 88 pitches and now sits with a 2.08 ERA through three starts this season. Perhaps most importantly, Severino's four-seam fastball velocity is back up north of 97 mph. He's throwing his slider far less than he used to, scaling back its usage in favor of more changeups and cutters.
Apr 15, 2022
Five scoreless innings
Severino (1-0) struck out six in five shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks in a 3-0 win Thursday against Toronto.
ANALYSIS
Severino retired 11 of the last 12 batters he faced after pitching around trouble in the first and second innings. The 83 pitches were his most in an appearance since 2018. After missing the majority of the last three seasons, Thursday's start is quite promising for the two-time All-Star. His next start will likely be Wednesday in Detroit.
Apr 9, 2022
Goes three frames in first start
Severino did not factor in the decision against Boston on Saturday, completing three innings and allowing two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out five.
ANALYSIS
Yankees manager Aaron Bone indicated prior to the game that he was hopeful Severino would be able to throw 65-70 pitches after experiencing arm soreness during spring training, and the right-hander hit the lower end of that range in his first regular-season start since 2019. He managed to hold the Red Sox to two runs despite giving up three extra-base hits, with the big blow against him being a two-run homer off the bat of Alex Verdugo in the second inning. Despite the so-so final pitching line, it was a promising performance by the 28-year-old highlighted by five strikeouts. Severino's second turn on the mound will likely come on the road versus Toronto next week.
Apr 9, 2022
Likely capped around 65-70 pitches
Manager Aaron Boone is hopeful that Severino will be able to throw 65-70 pitches during Saturday's start against the Yankees, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino was delayed in spring training due to arm soreness, and he likely won't be able to handle his full workload during his first start of the regular season. In spite of his earlier issue, he checked out fine at the end of camp and should be able to increase his pitch count following Saturday's outing.
Apr 3, 2022
Checks out fine after spring outing
Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed Severino (arm) is "good" following a four-inning start in Saturday's 10-0 win over Atlanta, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino was initially set to make his third start of the Grapefruit League slate Wednesday, but the Yankees instead had him throw a bullpen session after he dealt with arm soreness. Fortunately, Severino came out of the throwing session fine and returned to the mound Saturday with his best outing of the spring, as he limited Atlanta to no runs on one hit and no walks while striking out three in the 57-pitch appearance. The outing was Severino's final tuneup of the spring, with Boone indicating that the right-hander will take the hill for the Yankees' second game of the regular season next Saturday at home versus the Red Sox. Expect him to be capped at around 75 or 80 pitches in that start.
Apr 1, 2022
Confirmed for Saturday's start
Severino (arm) will start Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers and expects to throw about 60 pitches, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino has recently been slowed by arm soreness, but he had no issues during Wednesday's bullpen session and is poised to return to game action. The 28-year-old was previously expected to throw about 40 pitches, but the increased workload Saturday is a good sign for his potential availability for Opening Day, barring any further issues.
Mar 30, 2022
On track to pitch Saturday
Severino (arm) reported no issues following his bullpen session Wednesday and is expected to start Saturday's Grapefruit League game against Atlanta, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Given the multiple arm-related injuries and setbacks Severino has experienced over the last few seasons, fantasy managers were rightful to have some anxiety when he reported arm soreness earlier in the week. At least for the time being, Severino investors can breathe easy, as he wasn't shut down from throwing and felt fine physically coming out of Wednesday's mound session. Provided Severino is able to start Saturday as expected, he'll be only slightly behind in his throwing program, and the expectation remains that he'll be part of the Yankees' Opening Day rotation. However, because Severino said he expects to throw just 40 pitches Saturday in his final outing of the spring, he could be capped at around 60-to-75 pitches when his first turn in the rotation comes up during the regular season.
Mar 29, 2022
Slowed by sore arm
Severino will throw a bullpen session session Wednesday instead of making his scheduled Grapefruit League start, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
Arm troubles are always worrisome for a pitcher, especially one like Severino who's had his share of them already. This particular problem doesn't look like too much of an issue yet, as Severino will still throw in some capacity and is scheduled for a Grapefruit League appearance Saturday against Atlanta, but any setbacks could send him to the injured list to open the season.
Mar 26, 2022
Suffers control issues Friday
Severino tossed 1.2 innings in a Grapefruit League game against the Phillies on Friday, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks. He did not strike out any batters.
ANALYSIS
Severino struggled mightily to get the ball over the plate in his second spring outing, throwing only 22 of 49 pitches for strikes and issuing four free passes. When he avoided throwing balls, the right-hander was hit relatively hard, yielding two doubles among his four hits allowed. Severino is penciled in to fill a rotation spot for the Yankees this season, but he's struggled in both of his spring outings thus far, allowing a total of seven earned runs, eight hits and five walks over 3.2 innings while notching only one punchout.
Mar 21, 2022
Struggles in first spring outing
Severino pitched two innings in the Yankees' Grapefruit League loss to Detroit on Sunday, allowing four runs on four hits and one walk while striking out one.
ANALYSIS
Yankees manager Aaron Boone recently proclaimed Severino to be the "most ready" pitcher in camp for the team this spring, but the right-hander appeared rusty in his first Grapefruit League outing of 2022. He allowed a pair of runs in the first inning and served up a long ball to Robbie Grossman for two more runs in the second. Despite the rough start, it was promising to see Severino on the mound after he was limited to just six relief innings after completing his recovery from Tommy John surgery last season. He figures to slot into the middle of New York's rotation and would be a valuable fantasy asset if he's able to recover the form that led to a 3.39 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 220:46 K:BB across 191.1 innings in his last healthy campaign, but there is plenty of risk given the fact that he's made only seven regular-season appearances over the past two seasons.
Mar 15, 2022
First healthy spring since 2018
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Severino threw two innings of live batting practice Tuesday and is probably the "most ready" pitcher in big-league camp for the upcoming season, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Boone's comments are certainly eyebrow-raising, given that Severino hasn't been completely healthy for a spring training since 2018 and has made just seven combined regular-season appearances at the big-league level across the past three seasons due to lat and should injuries in addition to his February 2020 Tommy John surgery. While Severino looks like he'll be part of the Opening Day rotation, the Yankees could still look to monitor his workloads carefully to some degree in 2022, given his light innings counts in recent years. That being said, if Severino is anywhere close to the pitcher he was during his last healthy season in 2018, he and ace Gerrit Cole would form one of the best top-of-the-rotation duos in the American League. Expect Severino's average draft position to continue climbing if he remains healthy and continues to draw raves from the coaching staff and reporters during his throwing sessions and Grapefruit League outings.
Feb 10, 2022
Should be ready for spring training
Severino said Thursday that he expects to be ready to handle a starting pitcher's workload to begin spring training, Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino missed most of the 2021 campaign due to elbow, shoulder and groin issues, but he returned to game action in late September and struck out eight in six scoreless frames across four relief appearances. The right-hander recorded 30-plus starts in 2017 and 2018 and appears to be ready to rejoin the Yankees' rotation ahead of the 2022 season.
Sep 22, 2021
Two scoreless frames in return
Severino pitched two scoreless innings against the Rangers on Tuesday, allowing two hits and striking out two.
ANALYSIS
In his first major-league game action since 2019, Severino gave up a double and a single but no runs while covering the final two frames of a New York victory. The right-hander registered five swinging strikes among his 30 pitches and averaged 94 mph on his fastball, per Lindsey Adler of The Athletic. The velocity was a few ticks below his norm prior to undergoing Tommy John surgery, but that isn't necessarily a concern considering Severino's long layoff. He's expected to continue working out of the bullpen for the remainder of the campaign as he gets re-acquainted with pitching to big-league hitters.
Sep 20, 2021
Ready for 2021 debut
The Yankees reinstated Severino (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list Monday.
ANALYSIS
Severino's next appearance for the Yankees will be his first since the 2019 postseason, after he missed nearly all of the subsequent two seasons while recovering from Tommy John surgery. In recent months, his season debut with the big club has been delayed by setbacks with a strained groin and a stiff right shoulder, but he was finally activated after he checked out fine during a simulated game over the weekend. Because he hasn't had time to fully ramp up, Severino will be limited to a bullpen role for the rest of the 2021 campaign. The Yankees will presumably look to bring Severino back as a member of the rotation in 2022.
Sep 19, 2021
Could return Monday
The Yankees could activate Severino (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list as early as Monday, Max Goodman of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino impressed during his most recent live batting practice session Friday, but it's unclear if that'll be enough for him to rejoin the big club, or if he'll need to complete another bullpen session or two prior to being reinstated. Regardless, Severino is slated to fill a relief role for the Yankees upon his return, and he may need to prove himself in lower-leverage scenarios before manager Aaron Boone trusts him in bigger spots. Severino's last big-league appearance came during the 2019 postseason, as he missed the entire 2020 season while requiring from Tommy John surgery last February. He's been sidelined throughout the 2021 campaign while continuing his recovery from surgery and having experienced groin- and shoulder-related setbacks during his rehab assignments this summer.
Sep 17, 2021
Impresses in live BP
Manager Aaron Boone said Severino (shoulder) looked "really sharp" during Friday's two-inning session of live batting practice, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It's the first time since his rehab assignment was halted in mid-August that Severino has faced live hitters, and he'll likely require another session or two, at least, before being activated from the injured list. The 27-year-old is poised to fill a bullpen role for the Yankees upon his return.
Sep 16, 2021
Throwing sim game Friday
Severino (shoulder) will throw two innings in a simulated game Friday, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino threw a bullpen session Monday and will face hitters Friday for the first time since his rehab assignment was paused in mid-August. The Yankees haven't yet indicated whether the right-hander will require a rehab assignment following Friday's sim game, but he'll likely be in the mix to rejoin the major-league club prior to the end of the season.
Sep 14, 2021
Slated to face live hitters
Manager Aaron Boone said that Severino (shoulder) will face live hitters later this week, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino's Monday bullpen session figures to have gone well given that he's now progressing to facing hitters. Assuming he continues to progress without any setbacks, the right-hander could start a rehab assignment sometime within the next week, which would likely set him up to join the Yankees' bullpen before the end of the regular season.
Sep 12, 2021
Slated for another bullpen
Severino (shoulder) is expected to throw a bullpen session Monday, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino resumed mound work last week, and manager Aaron Boone is hopeful that the right-hander will progress to facing hitters following Monday's throwing session. The 27-year-old likely won't have enough time to build back up to a starter's workload prior to the end of the regular season, but the team is hopeful that he'll be able to return as a reliever sometime in the final few weeks of the year.
Sep 6, 2021
Bullpen session on tap
Severino (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
The bullpen session will mark Severino's first mound work since he was pulled off his rehab assignment at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in mid-August with a right shoulder injury. The shoulder issue was the second setback Severino has experienced this season as he works his way back from his February 2020 Tommy John surgery; he was previously taken off a rehab assignment in mid-June due to a Grade 2 groin strain. Ensuring he's able to pitch without any discomfort in his shoulder is now Severino's greatest concern, but because of the delays caused by his two setbacks, the 27-year-old doesn't look as though he'll have enough time to build back up for a starting role this season. Instead, Severino will likely prepare to join the Yankees as a reliever if and when he makes it back from the 60-day injured list.
Sep 3, 2021
Could return to mound next week
Severino (shoulder) is reportedly doing well and is expected to return to mound work by next weekend, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander has been playing catch after tests recently cleared him of structural damage to his shoulder. He was subsequently allowed to restart a throwing program but has yet to progress to mound work. Given the limited time remaining in the regular season, the chances of Severino pitching for the Yankees this season appear slim though not entirely unfathomable.
Aug 28, 2021
Plays catch Friday
Severino (shoulder) played catch from 60 to 70 feet Friday, per MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
Severino was recently cleared to resume throwing after undergoing an MRI and consulting with multiple medical professionals. The right-hander will progress from throwing on flat ground to bullpen sessions as he begins to ramp back up, and the team will closely monitor him before deciding when he may restart a rehab assignment. Severino could still return before the end of the regular season, but that scenario is far from a certainty.
Aug 27, 2021
Able to begin throwing
Severino (shoulder) has been cleared to resume his throwing program, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander recently met with Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who gave the thumbs up for Severino to begin throwing again. He had been shut down since Aug. 13 after experiencing tightness in his shoulder. Severino was in the midst of a rehab assignment prior to his latest setback, so he should resume throwing in minor-league games in the near future. It's unclear when he might be able to rejoin the big club or what his role will be when he returns.
Aug 19, 2021
Cleared of damage to shoulder
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Thursday that Severino was cleared of any structural damage to his right shoulder following a second opinion, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. Severino will be shut down from throwing for the next week before the Yankees re-evaluate him.
ANALYSIS
Severino hasn't made an appearance for the Yankees since the 2019 postseason after undergoing Tommy John surgery in February 2020, but the health of his right elbow no longer appears to be a concern. The right-hander previously had a minor-league rehab assignment halted in mid-June when he incurred a Grade 2 groin strain, and after restarting his rehab assignment earlier this month, he made just two appearances for Double-A Somerset before experiencing tightness in his right shoulder. While he was fortunate to avoid any major damage to the shoulder, Severino's uncertain timeline to resume throwing could make it a challenge for him to make it back to the Yankees before the end of the season. If Severino does get activated from the 60-day injured list, he may have to work out of the bullpen, given the lack of time he'll have to build up his pitch count for starting duties.
Aug 17, 2021
Won't throw this week
Severino (elbow/groin) is still waiting on a second opinion on his right shoulder but will not throw for the remainder of the week, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino suffered a setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery last week and was scratched from a scheduled rehab start after his shoulder didn't feel right. He underwent an MRI, which the Yankees sent out for a second opinion Monday. That opinion is expected to come in the next day or two, at which point Severino's next steps should become clearer.
Aug 17, 2021
Slated for second opinion
Severino (elbow/groin) will receive a second opinion on his right shoulder in the coming days, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino underwent an MRI on Monday, but the Yankees haven't revealed the results. However, the right-hander wants to get insight from Dr. Neal ElAttrache before determining the next step in his recovery process. Severino had his rehab assignment paused after he was scratched from Friday's rehab start at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and a better idea of his status will likely be known once he receives his second opinion.
Aug 14, 2021
Visiting doctor Monday
Severino (elbow/groin) will visit a doctor Monday to get his tight shoulder checked out, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino has experienced multiple setbacks as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery, a procedure he underwent in February of last year. His rehab was first paused in June due to a groin strain and hit another snag Friday, as he was scratched due to tightness in his shoulder. The Yankees are framing the latest pause as precautionary, but it's hard not to worry about a shoulder issue for a pitcher. Clarity on his return timeline should emerge following Monday's visit.
Aug 14, 2021
Rehab assignment paused
Severino (groin/elbow) will return to New York to be evaluated after he was scratched from Friday's rehab start at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Triple-A manager Doug Davis said that Severino "didn't feel right" while warming up Friday, so the team held him out as a precaution. While Davis is optimistic that the right-hander isn't dealing with a serious issue, more clarity regarding his status will likely be revealed once he meets with team doctors.
Aug 14, 2021
Scratched from rehab start
Severino (groin/elbow) was scratched from his rehab start at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday due to an injury, Conor Foley of The Scranton Times-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
The weather ahead of Friday's minor-league contest looked questionable, so the reason for Severino's scratch wasn't initially known. However, the right-hander told the team that something didn't feel right while he was warming up, so he was shut down. Triple-A manager Doug Davis didn't know what injury led to Severino being scratched, and it's not yet clear what impact the issue will have on his return timetable.
Aug 9, 2021
Another rehab start on tap
Severino (groin/elbow) will make another rehab start Friday, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino struck out five in four scoreless innings during Sunday's rehab start, and manager Aaron Boone said the right-hander will use Friday's appearance to build up more. Boone said that the team hasn't ruled out reinstating the 27-year-old from the injured list after Friday's outing.
Aug 5, 2021
Next rehab start at High-A
Severino (groin/elbow) is scheduled to make the second start of his minor-league rehab assignment at High-A Hudson Valley on Sunday, Justin Shackil of WFAN Sports Radio New York reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino will return to the mound on the typical four days' rest after he restarted his rehab assignment Tuesday at Double-A Somerset. He covered 2.1 innings and tossed 43 pitches (28 strikes) in the outing, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out four. After Sunday's rehab start, Severino is expected to require one or two more outings in the minors before he gets clearance to make his 2021 debut with the big club, likely in late August or early September.
Aug 2, 2021
Rehabbing at Double-A
Severino (elbow/groin) will report to Double-A Somerset on Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
The Yankees are planning Severino toss 40-to-50 pitches in the rehab outing, his first game action since June 12. While ramping up following his February 2020 Tommy John surgery, Severino suffered a Grade 2 right groin strain, and his recovery from that injury looks to be the greater concern at this juncture. The Yankees are seemingly preparing to bring Severino back from the 60-day injured list as a starter, so he may require two or three additional rehab starts beyond Tuesday before making his return from the IL. General manager Brian Cashman estimated Sunday that Severino will likely rejoin the Yankees at some point between Aug. 20 and Sept. 1, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
Jul 29, 2021
Cleared for rehab assignment
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Severino (elbow/groin) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment Tuesday, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
After completing a simulated game Thursday without issue, Severino received the green light to move on the final phase of his rehab from Tommy John surgery and a Grade 2 groin strain, the latter of which resulted in him being pulled off his initial rehab assignment in mid-June. The Yankees haven't announced which affiliate Severino will join or what kind of workload he'll handle Tuesday, but he'll most likely be eased in with a light pitch count as he begins the ramp-up process. Severino is expected to stretch out for starting duty, and he could be ready to return from the 60-day injured list to make his 2021 debut for the Yankees in mid-August.
Jul 28, 2021
Sim game on tap
Severino (elbow) will throw a simulated game Thursday, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino was initially slated to resume his rehab assignment Thursday, but the game was up in the air due to a rainy forecast. The simulated game should allow the right-hander to pitch in a more controlled setting, and it will mark his fourth live session since mid-June. Assuming all goes well Thursday, Severino's next appearance could be in a rehab game.
Jul 27, 2021
Throws another live BP
Severino (elbow) tossed another live batting practice session Tuesday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
It marked Severino's third live session since the right-hander's rehab assignment was paused because of a right groin strain. It seems possible that his next step will be to resume his rehab stint, though the Yankees could opt to have him throw another simulated game first. Once he's sent on a rehab assignment, the plan is for the 27-year-old to get stretched out to be able to throw five or six innings. With that in mind, he remains on track for a mid-to-late August return.
Jul 24, 2021
Hurls 38 pitches in two sim innings
Severino (elbow) tossed two simulated innings and totaled 38 pitches at Fenway Park on Saturday, per MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
Severino appears to be closing in on a minor-league rehab assignment, though it's not yet clear whether the Yankees will ask him to toss another simulated game first. Once he does start pitching in games, the Yankees plan to have him build up to five or six innings before they consider bringing him back up to the big-league roster.
Jul 22, 2021
Another live BP on tap
Severino (elbow) is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session this weekend and could begin a minor-league rehab assignment by the middle of next week, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino emerged from Sunday's 30-pitch live batting practice session without incident and completed a bullpen session Thursday as he continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery. The right-hander was expected to return from the injured list earlier in the season, but a Grade 2 groin strain suffered in mid-June resulted in a brief shutdown that pushed back the timeline for his 2021 debut. At this point, Severino is in the process of ramping up again, and he'll likely need at least three rehab outings in the minors to build up his pitch count for starting duty. He could be ready to pitch for the Yankees at some point in mid-to-late August.
Jul 18, 2021
Checks out well during sim game
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Severino (elbow) fared well Sunday during a 30-pitch outing against live hitters, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Facing hitters for the first time since being pulled off his minor-league rehab assignment in mid-June due to a Grade 2 groin strain, Severino appeared to be in good physical shape, according to Max Goodman of SI.com. Boone said that Severino will face hitters again in five or six days before the Yankees determine whether the right-hander is ready to head back out on a rehab assignment. The Yankees want Severino to build up to five or six innings in his rehab starts before brining him back from the 60-day injured list, so he's realistically at least a month away from making his 2021 big-league debut.
Jul 11, 2021
Progressing toward live hitters
Severino (elbow) tossed a couple bullpen sessions within the last week and his next step will be facing live hitters, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino has thrown a number of bullpen sessions early in July. It's not clear exactly when he will progress to face live hitters, but the team has stated that he is trending in the right direction. Severino could begin a lengthy rehab assignment soon.
Jul 8, 2021
Tosses another bullpen
Severino (elbow/groin) threw another bullpen Wednesday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino resumed mound work Saturday, and he was able to throw off the bullpen mound a second time Wednesday. If he feels good following Wednesday's throwing session, the right-hander could face hitters as early as this weekend. Severino's rehab from Tommy John surgery was delayed in mid-June due to a Grade 2 groin strain, but he could begin a rehab assignment in the near future if he remains on track in his recovery.
Jul 3, 2021
Throws off mound Saturday
Severino (elbow/groin) threw off a bullpen mound Saturday, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
The Yankees were hopeful that Severino could resume mound work by July 4, and he was able to meet that goal during Saturday's bullpen session. The right-hander has been recovering from Tommy John surgery to begin the year, but his rehab was delayed in mid-June due to a Grade 2 groin strain. While a better idea of Severino's return timetable could be revealed based on how he responds after he threw 20-25 pitches Saturday, he could return to the Yankees by early August if he stays on track in his recovery.
Jul 2, 2021
Could resume mound work by July 4
The Yankees are hopeful that Severino (elbow/groin) could return to throwing from a mound by July 4, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino's rehab from Tommy John surgery was delayed in mid-June after he was diagnosed with a Grade 2 groin strain, and he has yet to return to the mound. However, the right-hander has been able to run and throw from flat ground, so it appears that he's not far off from mound work. General manager Brian Cashman previously indicated that the groin strain would delay Severino's return to the majors by 4-to-6 weeks.

Nearing mound work
Manager Aaron Boone said Friday that Severino (elbow/groin) could resume mound work in a week to 10 days, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery, but he's also dealing with a Grade 2 groin strain that he sustained during a rehab assignment earlier in June. He's been playing catch recently, and he was able to run full sprints Thursday. It's not yet clear when the right-hander will return to game action, but his return to the mound will be a significant step in his recovery.

Sprints on field Thursday
Severino (elbow/groin) ran full sprints Thursday, Max Goodman of Sports Illustrated reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino is still working his way back from Tommy John surgery, but the importance of his ability to sprint is tied to the Grade 2 groin strain he suffered during a minor-league rehab appearance June 12. The injury has held back his rehab assignment, so he'll need to be fully recovered before he can return to game action and continue to build up his arm. The right-hander is unlikely to return to the big club until August.

Plays catch Saturday
Severino (elbow/groin) played catch on the field ahead of Saturday's game against the Athletics, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino suffered a Grade 2 groin strain during his rehab stint at High-A Hudson Valley on June 12, but he was able to resume throwing a week later. While it was encouraging to see him play catch Saturday, the right-hander's setback is expected to delay his return by about a month, so he'll likely be sidelined until at least late July or early August.
Jun 15, 2021
Return delayed about a month
Manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Severino (elbow) suffered a Grade 2 groin strain during his rehab stint at High-A Hudson Valley on Saturday, Jack Curry of YES Network reports. The Yankees were hoping to have the right-hander back in the starting rotation by the end of June, but the groin injury will delay his return by about a month.
ANALYSIS
Severino appeared to be in a lot of pain after he exited his Saturday outing and Tuesday's update confirms that he suffered a rather serious setback in his return from Tommy John surgery. Given Boone's updated timeline, a late-July return to the Yankees rotation represents the absolute best-case scenario for the right-hander, but he'll need a perfectly smooth next few weeks for that to become a reality.

Meeting with team doctors on tap
Severino (elbow) is scheduled to meet with Yankees team doctors Monday to receive further evaluation for the right groin injury he picked up in his rehab start Saturday at High-A Hudson Valley, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
In his second minor-league outing in his rehab program for Tommy John surgery, Severino retired five hitters before bowing out in the second inning with what appeared to be a painful-looking groin injury. Severino was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Sunday, but the Yankees likely won't reveal the results of those tests until after he's examined by team doctors. More information regarding the extent of his groin injury along with a timeline for him to resume his rehab assignment should come soon, but even if Severino's setback is deemed minor, he still may be hard-pressed to make it back from the 60-day injured list before the end of July.

Dealing with groin injury
Severino (elbow) suffered a right groin injury during his rehab outing with High-A Hudson Valley on Saturday and will undergo an MRI on Sunday, Erik Boland of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander had to be helped off the field, which suggests that there's at least a chance the injury could be serious. The Yankees will surely have a better grasp on the severity of the groin issue following Sunday's MRI.

Exits rehab start with leg injury
Severino (elbow) was helped off the field during his rehab start for High-A Hudson Valley on Saturday due to an apparent right leg injury, Conor Foley of The Scranton Times-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino had been working his way back from Tommy John surgery and was making his second rehab start, tracking towards a return to the active roster sometime around the All-Star break. The exact nature and severity of his leg injury are unclear, and while it's a good thing that he's not dealing with an arm-related setback, anything more than a very minor issue is likely to delay his timeline.
Jun 12, 2021
Rehab moves to High-A
Severino (elbow) was transferred to High-A Hudson Valley on Saturday to continue his rehab assignment.
ANALYSIS
He struck out three while giving up one run in 2.2 innings June 6 at Low-A and will move up one level for his next rehab outing. Severino has a chance to return just before the All-Star break if he can avoid setbacks.
Jun 6, 2021
Throws 34 pitches Sunday
Severino (elbow) threw 34 pitches in his rehab start for Low-A Tampa on Sunday, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino's fastball hit 98.8 mph, and he also mixed in 11 sliders in his first rehab appearance Sunday as he continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery. The right-hander is expected to make his next rehab start Saturday, and he could report to High-A Hudson Valley for the outing, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.
Jun 5, 2021
Starting rehab Sunday
Severino (elbow) will start Sunday with the Low-A Tampa Tarpons.
ANALYSIS
This marks the beginning of Severino's rehab assignment as he works his way back from Tommy John Surgery. The buildup he'll require means he's unlikely to return for at least another month, but the fact that he's pitching in games again is very encouraging for the hard-throwing righty and the Yankees.

Nearing rehab assignment
Severino (elbow) is expected to begin a rehab assignment Sunday, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino has been throwing bullpen sessions recently as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery, and he'll throw three simulated innings Monday. If he feels good afterward, the right-hander should return to game action in the minors Sunday. Severino will likely require several rehab starts to build up his workload, but he appears to be trending in the right direction.
May 28, 2021
Tosses another bullpen
Severino (elbow) threw a live bullpen session Wednesday and is close to going on a rehab assignment, Max Goodman of Sports Illustrated reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander has now completed multiple successful bullpen sessions as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery. Though manager Aaron Boone didn't specify when Severino would begin a rehab assignment, he did indicate that the pitcher "is getting close to that point." Assuming Severino doesn't encounter any setbacks, he could make his return to the big leagues sometime in July.
May 22, 2021
Close to game action
Severino (elbow) is close to pitching in games, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Recordreports.
ANALYSIS
Severino's latest simulated game was reportedly a huge success, and a notable step in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. The righty will surely require a lot of rehab work to build up a starter's inning load, but there's reason for optimism that he'll return to the Yankees' rotation in the early part of the summer.
May 14, 2021
Takes next step in recovery
Severino (elbow) threw to hitters at the Yankees' player development complex in Tampa, Florida, on Thursday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
This was Severino's first time throwing to live hitters since undergoing Tommy John surgery in February of 2020. The right-hander faced a group of hitters that included top prospect Jasson Dominguez and reportedly touched 96 mph with his fastball. Manager Aaron Boone indicated that the session went "really well," so it appears that Severino didn't experience any setbacks. He remains on target for a return in mid-to-late summer.
May 12, 2021
Throwing session pushed back
Severino (elbow) is dealing with a stiff back Wednesday and will throw his live BP on Thursday, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino was initially expected to face hitters Wednesday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last February. Outside of Wednesday's minor setback, the right-hander has been progressing well in his recovery in recent weeks and could return to game action around the middle of July.
May 2, 2021
Set to face hitters within 10 days
Severino is expected to face live hitters May 10 or 11 for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last February, Max Goodman of Sports Illustrated reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino has been progressing in recent weeks and recently worked up to throwing to batters standing in the box while mixing in all of his pitches. Though he still has hurdles to clear before being ready to pitch again in the majors, the right-hander appears to be on track for a return sometime around the middle of July.
Apr 30, 2021
Will face live hitters soon
Severino (elbow) isn't far off from facing live hitters, Max Goodman of Sports Illustrated reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino has been progressing through a throwing program in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, and he was able to resume firing sliders in early April. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Thursday that Severino is "getting close" to facing live hitters, which would represent another significant step on his path back to the big leagues. The right-hander is currently on the 60-day injured list and isn't expected back until July.
Apr 3, 2021
Throwing sliders
Severino (elbow) has progressed to throwing sliders from the mound as well as fastballs, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He continues to do well, according to manager Aaron Boone, and after being limited to fastballs during spring training, it is encouraging to hear he has progressed to throwing breaking balls. Severino doesn't have a clear timetable for his return, but the hope is that he will be back sometime this summer.
Mar 16, 2021
Limited to fastballs thus far
Severino (elbow) has been tossing two bullpen sessions per week but is only throwing fastballs for the time being, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino indicated Monday that his rehab from Tommy John surgery is going according to plan, but he will nonetheless miss a significant portion of the campaign as he continues to recover. The fact that the right-hander is able to throw twice a week is certainly a good sign, and, according to Severino, it may not be long before he's able to progress to breaking pitches.
Mar 11, 2021
Completes bullpen session
Severino (elbow) threw his first bullpen session of the spring Tuesday, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
The 20-pitch side session was also Severino's first since he underwent Tommy John surgery in February 2020. Per Ackert, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Severino bounced back well from the workout, so the right-hander will get back on the field Thursday to throw off flat ground. He'll likely need to complete several more bullpen sessions before the Yankees clear him to face hitters in batting practice, perhaps in early April.
Mar 6, 2021
Mound work imminent
According to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, Severino (elbow) is doing well with his throwing program and should start pitching off a mound soon, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
News of Severino's return to the mound has been floated for several weeks, and it appears that there have been no setbacks that would place a road block on the right-hander's progression. Though an exact date for Severino's next step has yet to be determined, he remains on track to return to big-league action sometime this summer.
Feb 27, 2021
Mound work coming soon
Severino (elbow) is expected to throw off a mound within the next two weeks, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino is past the midpoint of his recovery from Tommy John surgery, a procedure he underwent back in February of last year, but he still has plenty of work to do. He won't throw off a mound next week but is expected to do so during the following week as he targets a return sometime over the summer.
Feb 23, 2021
Placed on 60-day injured list
Severino (elbow) landed on the 60-day injured list Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The move prevents Severino from returning in the first two months of the season, though he was never expected back that soon after undergoing Tommy John surgery in February of last year. General manager Brian Cashman previously gave him the somewhat vague timetable of "late summer," while Severino himself has said he expects to return in June or July. The move clears a spot on the Yankees' 40-man roster for the team to add Brett Gardner, who re-signed in a corresponding move.
Feb 22, 2021
Expects to return in June or July
Severino (elbow) expects to pitch off a mound soon and anticipates a return to major-league action in June or July, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
The Yankees previously mentioned late summer as their target timeframe for Severino's return from Tommy John surgery, a procedure he underwent back in February of 2020. It sounds like Severino is slightly more optimistic about his timeline, though that's hardly uncommon. Which timeline winds up being correct will have a large impact on his fantasy value. A June return could see Severino make nearly 20 starts, while a late summer return could see him make less than 10.
Feb 18, 2021
Nearing mound work
Severino (elbow) has played catch from 120 feet and should advance to mound work within the next few weeks, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino continues to make progress as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery, a procedure he underwent in February of 2020. He appears to be still on track to return sometime late this summer, though the Yankees have yet to offer a more precise timeline.
Jan 29, 2021
Tracking towards late summer return
Severino is on track to return from Tommy John surgery in late summer, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino underwent the procedure in February of 2020. If his recovery was on the fast end of the typical timeline, he could be pushing to return not long after Opening Day, but general manager Brian Cashman seemed to suggest he'd need a bit longer than that. "Late summer" is unfortunately somewhat of a vague time frame, but it sounds as though there's a real chance Severino doesn't wind up making much more than six or seven starts this season, which makes even a pitcher of his talents tough to hold onto in many formats.
Oct 14, 2020
Rehab going well
Severino's (elbow) rehab is going well, and he could return to the majors in June or July, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino underwent Tommy John surgery in February, and he's received positive reports regarding his rehab so far. There's been optimism that he could pitch at some point in 2021, and general manager Brian Cashman provided a clearer timetable for his return as the Yankees head into the offseason.
Jun 28, 2020
Lands on 45-day IL
Severino (elbow) was placed on the 45-day injured list.
ANALYSIS
This was inevitable after Severino underwent Tommy John surgery in February. He has been progressing well in his rehab and is optimistic that he will be able to pitch for the Yankees at some point in 2021.
May 31, 2020
Pleased with progress in rehab
Severino (elbow) said Saturday that he's progressing well in his recovery from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in February and remains optimistic that he'll be ready to pitch for the Yankees at some point in 2021, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino has been a regular at the Yankees' spring facility in Tampa during baseball's hiatus, with the right-hander relaying that he's been able to go through a weightlifting program five days a week since having the procedure. He expects to receive clearance to resume throwing at some point during the summer, but it may not be until next spring that the Yankees give him the green light to face hitters. Before requiring surgery, Severino was at least able to secure a four-year, $40 million contract extension with the Yankees that bought out his remaining arbitration years.
Apr 1, 2020
Clear to rehab at team facility
Severino (elbow) is among a group of Yankees eligible to use the Yankees' facility in Tampa in the midst of Florida's stay-at-home declaration, George A. King III of the New York Post writes.
ANALYSIS
With Florida's stay-at-home order set to kick in at 12:01 a.m. ET on Friday, most players will no longer be allowed to gather at George M. Steinbrenner Field. However, the policy makes an exception for players undergoing rehab programs, meaning Severino will be able to continue to use the facility along with a short list of other players including Giancarlo Stanton (calf) and Aaron Judge (rib). Severino underwent Tommy John surgery in late February and is expected to miss the entire 2020 campaign.
Mar 18, 2020
Rehabbing at training complex
Severino (elbow) has been rehabbing at the Yankees' spring-training complex, Marly Rivera of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino is among a group of Yankees players and coaches who have chosen to stay in Florida during MLB's hiatus. The right-hander is in the very early stages of his rehab from Tommy John surgery and won't return to game action until 2021.
Feb 27, 2020
Undergoes successful surgery
Severino's Tommy John surgery went as expected Thursday, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The team also announced that Severino had an existing bone chip removed from his elbow during the surgery. While this is good news for the right-hander, he won't be available for the 2020 campaign and likely a portion of the 2021 season.
Feb 25, 2020
Tommy John surgery set for Thursday
Severino will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Thursday.
ANALYSIS
It was reported earlier Tuesday the right-hander would require Tommy John surgery and be lost for the season, and he'll officially go under the knife later this week. It's a tough blow for Severino, who was limited to three starts last season by lat and rotator cuff injuries, and his 2021 campaign figures to be significantly impacted, as well.
Feb 25, 2020
Needs Tommy John surgery
Severino will require Tommy John surgery, Erik Boland of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
Severino was shut down early in camp due to what was originally called forearm soreness, but the issue was evidently much more serious. The righty will now miss all of the 2020 season and a good portion of 2021 as well. This comes on the back of a 2019 campaign in which he was limited to just three starts by rotator cuff and lat injuries.
Feb 21, 2020
Sent away for tests
Severino will be absent from camp for three days to undergo tests to figure out what's wrong with his forearm, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After lat and shoulder issues limited him to just 12 innings last season, Severino already has a seemingly unrelated issue early in this year's camp. The fact that he'll fly to New York for tests would seem to indicate that the Yankees are quite concerned, though his expected recovery timeline won't be clear until the results of the tests are released.
Feb 20, 2020
Shut down with forearm soreness
Manager Aaron Boone said Severino will be shut down for at least a few days with forearm soreness, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
The issue apparently dates back to his last start of the 2019 playoffs, and could put the start of his season in jeopardy. Per Jack Curry of YES Network, the right-hander will be examined by Dr. Chris Ahmad on Friday, after which more should be known about the severity of the issue. The Yankees will certainly proceed cautiously with Severino, as forearm soreness can often lead to a larger issue.
